2014 Law Week: Apply Principle of Federalism In Handling Court Cases -Utuama Advocates

20141111-032803.jpgThe Deputy Governor of Delta State, Prof. Amos Utuama SAN has advocated the Principle of Federalism in the handling of court cases in Nigeria to checkmate the volume of pending cases in high and supreme courts in nation.

The deputy governor stated this on Monday, November 10, 2014 at Asaba, Delta State during the opening ceremony of Nigerian Bar Association Asaba branch 2014 Law Week with theme: “The Judiciary in contemporary Nigeria”

Prof. Utuama opined that to avoid the current over loading of our courts including High and Supreme courts in the nation, certain cases should be entertained and concluded at the lower courts emphasizing that cases in the class of local government elections should not be extended to upper courts.

The deputy governor, who declared the Law Week open, observed that sometimes cases are moved to higher courts in form of Appeal for lack of confidence and trust in the ability of the lower courts to do justice to cases before it.

He challenged the Asaba branch of NBA to strive to produce the President of NBA and also to produce more Senior Advocates in the branch.

The Chief Judge of Delta State, Hon Justice Abiodun Smith called on legal practitioners to re-examine and rededicate themselves to impact positively in the society and commended the organizers of the Law Week for their good organizational ability.

In a key- note address at the occasion, the Chairman of Nigeria Bar Association, Asaba branch, Barr Oseyenim Chukwuma Esq said Law Week is a period when legal practitioners who practice at the Bar, the Law accemician and those who are privileged to occupy the exalted bench come together to interact, share experience and exchange ideas on how best the profession can sustain its value and maintain its leading role as a beacon of hope to the society.

Barr. Oseyenim Chukwuma stated that the choice of 2014 Law Week theme was as deliberate as the judiciary of today which is mainly concerned with justice delivery, adjudication and settlement of disputes, rendering and dispensing justice.
