Chairman, Senate Committee on Health, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has on Monday, December 08, 2014 emerged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)governorship candidate for Delta state after defeating 24 other aspirants in the primary election in which 1,121 delegates voted.

The returning officer, Hon Karim Sunday Steve, declared Okowa winner after having polled the largest number of votes in the keenly contested primaries which held amidst tight security.

Okowa polled 406 votes to beat Olorogun David Edevbie, alleged consensus candidate of the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), who clinched 299 votes to come second while former Speaker of Delta Assembly, Victor Ochei coasted home with 185 votes to emerge third.

Other results as announced by the election returning Officer, Hon Karim Sunday Steve of the House of Representatives, were as follows: Ndudi Elumelu (50 votes), Godsday Orubebe (49) and Godwill Obielum (22). 

Professor Sylvester Monye, Ovie Omo-Agege,  Ngozi Elejeme and Sam Obi got 10 votes each;  Peter Okocha had six votes, Tony Obuh (five), Dr Festus Okobor got 5 votes and Sir Tony Obuh 5 votes., Charles Emetulu (four), Kenneth Gbagi (two) and Mike Uwaka (one vote) while one vote was voided.

Governorship aspirants present were Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, Olorogun David Edevbie, Hon. Victor Ochei, Mr Tony Obuh,  Elder Godsday Orubebe, Chief Peter Okocha, Prof Sylvester Monye, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, Olorogun Kenneth Gbagi, Hon. Sam Obi, Charles Emetulu, Clement Ofuani, Mrs Esther Uduehi, Mrs Ngozi Olejeme, Dr Festus Okubor, Chief Mike Uwaka, Ovie Omo-Agege and Dr John Akwara.

Arthur Okowa Ifeanyi, a graduate of the University of Ibadan was elected Senator for Delta North, in Delta State, Nigeria, in the April 2011 national elections was born on July 8, 1959. 

Meanwhile, Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has congratulated Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa on his victory at the Monday Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primaries.

Uduaghan in a press statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Sunny Ogefere, described the victory of Okowa who polled 406  votes to beat his closest  rival, Chief David Edebvie who scored 299 votes, as well deserving.

Governor Uduaghan who is leader of the PDP in the state , charged Okowa to demonstrate the spirit of sportsmanship by quickly extending a hand of fellowship to other contestants.

He also called on the other aspirants to note that the exercise was a family contest where there was no winner no loser, urging them to join hands with Okowa in positioning the party for victory at the general elections.

“Let all faithful members of our great party be reminded that now that a candidate has emerged, it is incumbent on us all to close ranks and work assiduously towards ensuring victory for the PDP in the general elections.

“I must also at this juncture commend the peaceful disposition displayed by all aspirants before and during the primaries. This is a testament to our peace and security agenda in the state,” he said.

Earlier, shortly after casting his vote as a delegate at 7.35 pm, Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan urged losers in the governorship primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to support the winner in the interest of the party.

He said: “Losers should be ready to work with the winner,” describing the primary election as “peaceful, orderly and well organised.”
