THE Chairman, School of Health Technology, Ofuoma-Ughelli, Delta State Dr (Pharm.) Nelson Ejakpovi has decried the deplorable state of primary health centres in the country.
Dr. Ejakpovi accompanied by members of the Governing Council, Mr. Sunny Tatauzugu and others, while inspecting the Primary Health Centre at Owa-Alero, Ika South local government area of Delta State, kicked against the neglect of such centres.
He observed that the Primary Health Centre at Owa-Alero “has been abandoned despite the huge benefits the community was supposed to get from it and this is the situation in most of the health centres across the country.”
“Primary healthcare centers are very vital to the healthcare delivery system, we cannot afford to toy with them because, there are some level of healthcare services that requires that the first point of call should be the health centers,” Dr Ejakpovi said, adding, “even in developed countries you have health centers that are close to the people, but, we don’t have that consciousness, we need to build it and encourage people to use the health centres
He disclosed that efforts would be made for the state government to acquire the Primary Healthcare Centre at Owa-Alero for it to serve as one of the practical training centres for the School of Health Technology, Ofuoma-Ughelli.
According to him, “in a nutshell, the place is abandoned, nothing is working, a community like this need a very functional health centre,” adding, “primary health centers are run by the local government councils but, the School of Health Technology is interested because, we train people who are supposed to be masters of primary health care delivery, community healthcare delivery, and it is part of our curriculum to get this people to go the rural areas, stay with the people, observe and see the challenges in the rural areas; it is part of their training so that when they graduate, they become officers of their different disciplines in terms of community representations.”
