Zambia Gets White Interim President, As Sata Dies

Former Zambian Vice-President, Guy Scott has been appointed the country’s interim president following the death of the incumbent Michael Sata. Scott becomes Africa’s first white president since the end of the South African apartheid regime in 1994

Guy Scott has been appointed Zambia’s interim president following the death of the current president on Tuesday. The 70 year-old leader becomes Africa’s first white leader since the end of the apartheid regime in South Africa.

Scott who was previously the vice-president, was promoted to the top job on Wednesday and will hold office for 90 days upon which until an election is held.

This was confirmed by the Defence Minister Edgar Lungu who had acted as the president while Sata was away since June for a medical check-up.

“Dr Scott will act as president of the Republic of Zambia until the country goes for a presidential by election”.

Scott had termed his position as “a bit of a shock to the system”, but added, “I’m very proud to be entrusted with it.”

Recall that former 77 year old Zambian leader, Michael Sata, who had been in office since 2011 died on Tuesday evening at King Edward VII hospital in London while receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness.
