The Governor of Delta State, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, has declared his administration’s determination to continue to support and encourage individuals with genuine intention to bring development to the state.
Dr Okowa made the declaration while performing the official ground breaking ceremony of the STARS University, Idumuje-Ugboko in Aniocha North Local Government Area.
The Governor who was represented by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Engr Jude Sinebe, in his speech said that when completed the university would be the first of its kind in Sub-Sahara Africa as well as in Nigeria, just as in the case of the College of Physical Education, Mosogar.
Governor Okowa described STARS University as uniquely designed to train athletes in various sporting activities, expressing optimism that the university would open up the area and also accelerate development in the entire state.
Earlier, the Chairman of the occasion, Rtd Captain Joseph Okubor, asserted that prince Ned Nwoko had a huge passion for his people’s well-being which he said had been re-enforced by the ground breaking ceremony, stressing that it would usher in unprecedented development in the community.
According to him, a seed had been sowed with the ground breaking ceremony of the STARS University and urged the people to strive to become role model rather than chasing wealth at all cost.
Also speaking, the Chairman, Project Implementation Committee, Prof. Nduka Uriah, described Ned Nwoko as a visionary politician and legal luminary of great repute.
Prof. Urial, started that when completed the university would be a center of excellence for sports/conventional university, stating that all the academic requirements by the National Universities Commission (NUC) had been met.
The founder of the University, Hon Prince Ned Nwoko, said that the sports university would also offer conventional courses, and joint honour degree would be awarded.
While thanking the people of Idumuje-Ugboko and those who graced the ceremony, he explained that STARS University represented Sports, Technology, Arts and Research Sciences.
