Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis, describing the late pontiff as a beacon of peace, humility, and compassion whose legacy will continue to inspire generations around the world.

Pope Francis passed on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, after over a decade of papal leadership marked by groundbreaking reforms and tireless humanitarian efforts.

In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, in Asaba on Monday, Governor Oborevwori joined global leaders in mourning the revered spiritual leader, whose life was devoted to service, inclusiveness and justice.

He noted that Pope Francis was not only the spiritual head of over a billion Catholics but also a global figure who touched countless lives across religions and nations through his unwavering advocacy for the poor, marginalized and oppressed.

“The passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis, is a monumental loss not only to the Catholic Church but to humanity,” the governor stated.

Governor Oborevwori said; “His teachings, humility, and relentless pursuit of peace and unity will remain a guiding light to many.

“On behalf of the government and people of Delta State, I extend heart-felt condolences to the global Catholic community, the Vatican, and all those who found hope and faith in the Pope’s leadership.”

The Governor recalled the Pope’s emphasis on social justice, climate action, and inter-faith dialogue, commending his fearless efforts to reform and modernize the Church, while remaining grounded in the core principles of compassion and love.

Oborevwori urged Catholics in Nigeria and across the world to remain steadfast in their faith and to honour the Pope’s legacy by upholding the values he championed during his lifetime.

“The world mourns a man who lived for others, who preached not just with words but by example. We celebrate a life well-lived and pray for the repose of his soul,” the governor concluded.
