Ahead of the 2012 London Olympic Games in July, Delta State is poised to guarantee Nigeria’s medal haul at the global sports fiesta, as Governor Uduaghan expressed his willingness to ensure that the State sustains gold medal hoists in sports.

The stage for the medals haul was set in Warri on Thursday during the Warri Relay and Grand Prix 2012 organized by Confederation of African Athletes (CAA) held at the Warri City Stadium.

Nigerian athletes dominated their counterparts from other countries including world athletic power house, the United States of America in the athletics competition.

Governor Uduaghan, who disclosed that the state hosted the event because of her position as the number one sports state, expressed boasted that Delta state professional athletes that will represent Nigeria in the forthcoming Olympics, stressing that Nigeria will clinch gold medals in the London Olympic considering the athletes’ performance at the Warri competition.

“We are number state in terms of sports. Most of the athletes in Nigeria today in every facet of sports are from Delta. In the delegation that will be going for the Olympics, Delta State has the highest number of athletes. So we are number one state as far as sports is concerned in this country,”

In her remarks, veteran Olympiad and Nigeria’s most decorated athlete who is also African female sprinter of all time, Mary Onyali Omagbemi, commended the Delta State Government for packaging the event.

Describing the event as a warm-up competition for the London Games, she said, “Delta State has been a sports loving state and it is not a surprise that the state is doing a thing like this before the Olympics.”
