Delta State Government has reiterated its commitment towards ensuring grassroots sports development, especially football activities in the state.

The State Commissioner for Primary Education, Mr. Chika Ossai stated this in Asaba during a press briefing for the 2020/ 2021 edition of the Zenith Bank Delta Headmasters’ and Principals’ Cup Football competition.
The commissioner, who was accompanied by his counterpart in charge of the Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu said that the essence of the briefing was to inform the media practitioners on the preparations for the hosting of Headmasters’ for primary school learners and Principals’ cup football competition for secondary school students.

Ossai , who recalled that one of the objectives of the 2016 Delta State Education Summit was the revival of school’s sports in an effort to promote all round development of children , noted that Okowa’s administration was irrevocably committed to collaborating with private sector.

While saying that the success of the competition started in 2018/2019 edition of the Headmasters’ cup football competition had continued to attract increased participation, Mr. Ossai stated that the enthusiasm shown led the Zenith Bank’s sponsorship of the competition in 2020/2021.

He disclosed that 377 public and private primary schools registered for  the 2020/2021 edition, adding that the kick off of both tournaments were scheduled for Thursday, September 30 and Thursday, October 7 , 2021 while the two competition would run through the preliminary, zonal elimination, quarter final and semi-final as well as the final on November 11 and 25 respectively.

In his remarks, the representative of the Zenith Bank PLC, Mr. Okowa Ijeoma Monday, decried the spate of insecurity in the country, adding that the initiative of the bank to engage the youths was aimed at taking their minds away from crimes.

He said that Zenith Bank was always determined to utilise some part of its profits to impact on the lives of the people as it’s corporate social responsibility.
