As discourse are becoming rife on whether to abolish the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme or not, traditional rulers in the oil and gas rich Niger Delta region are calling on the Federal Government of Nigeria to restrict the services of NYSC members to their states of origin.

The royal fathers spoke at the end of a meeting of the Association of Traditional Rulers of Oil Mineral Producing Communities of Nigeria (TOMPCON) in Port Harcourt.

Their stand is as a result of the painful killing of some corps members in Northern parts of the country during the last general elections.

This is just as Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier-Gen. M. I. Tsiga had described those calling for the abolition of the scheme as enemies of Nigeria, and assuring that the scheme will not be scrapped.

Meanwhile, former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Barnabas Gemade has called for an urgent review of the NYSC, saying that a review of the system will help to check lapses in the scheme, especially in the area of security.

Barnabas, who spoke at an Induction programme for National Assembly members elect in Asaba, Delta state, condemned the sad development where serving corps members became the target of few disgruntled political elements who had refused to allow a process to take its course.
