0

The immediate past speaker of the Delta state House of Assembly, Hon. Monday Igbuya has been suspended for three months over allegations of financial recklessness during his tenure as speaker.

Although, some free thinkers are claiming that the state executive is behind the former speaker’s travails because of his political inclinations, the state legislature has sustained its resolve to deal with Igbuya.

The Assembly has accordingly, set up a three-member ad hoc committee to review a plenary report of a committee earlier set up by it to investigate the matter during its executive session on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 which was submitted on February 27, 2018.

The suspension is to enable the ad hoc committee to carry out its assignment without interference.

Mr. Igbuya’s suspension came by a motion brought under matters of urgent public importance by the Majority Leader, Hon. Tim Owhefere and seconded by the member representing Ughelli South, Hon. Rueben Izeze and unanimously adopted by the house at a plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.

Delta: Ebie, Ikem, Apokwu Tips Vocational Education, Training For Nat’l Growth

0
Delta State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Chiedu Ebie has admonished teachers in the state to always update themselves through consistent training and retraining in order to be abreast with modern trends in teaching profession.

Mr. Ebie, gave the advice in Asaba during a-two-day capacity building workshop organised by Delta State Technical and Vocational Education Board in collaboration with the SEEFOR Project for teachers of Technical Colleges in the state.

The Commissioner, who was represented by his Special Assistant, Dr. Godwin Edozie decried lack of proper data confronting the education sector, adding that the State Governor, Senator(Dr ) Ifeanyi Okowa was irrevocably committed to repositioning Technical Colleges, just as he stated that immediately Governor Ifeanyi Okowa assumed office in 2015, one of the bills forwarded by the Governor to Delta State House of Assembly was for the revamping of technical education in the state.

In a welcome address, the Acting Executive Secretary, Engr. Smart Ikem noted that the exercise was aimed at putting the teachers ahead of their students, saying that nowadays, especially with the ICT in place many students tend to carry out research in order to put them far above their teachers.

Engr. Ikem maintained that there was need for Continuous Professional Development so as to improve the sector back to what was obtainable in the past years, and reminded the participants that their performance would be measured by the performances of their students, even as he enjoined them to take the training seriously.

Earlier in a goodwill message, the Project Coordinator of SEEFOR Project, Sir Frank Apokwu, who was represented by the Communication Officer of the Project, Emuji Magnus opined that technical and vocational education play critical role in the sustainability of the economy of any nation .

He said that the capacity building workshop was in fulfilment of the one of the three folds where SEEFOR Project supported technical and vocational education in the state and urged participants to translate the gains of the training into effective teachings for the overall benefits of their students, noting that through youth acquisition of skills the issue of unemployment was addressed.

In his presentation on the Overview of TVE Teachers and Instructional Competence in TVE in Technical Colleges in Delta State, Prof. Kenneth Of and Dr. Chuks Nwabudike who stressed the importance of the capacity building workshop, said that effective use of Instructional resources would enhance the knowledge of teachers as their students.

They advised teachers to motivate and engage at all times rather than sustaining the impression that some students were not teachable or were designed to perform poorly.

HOW TO DEFEAT PRESIDENT BUHARI IN 2019: An Open Letter To PDP Chairman

1

The best chance that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) stands to sack President Buhari of the all Progressives Party (APC) is in 2019. If, for any self-inflicted reason, the PDP failed to remove the APC in 2019, it is not likely going to be able to remove the APC again for another fifty two years – that is assuming there would still be a party known as the PDP twenty months after if it lost (God forbid!).

In this epistle, I shall be discussing four steps to take to successfully disrupt, remove this sordid regime on May 29, 2019.

President Buhari appears not set for or interested about free and fair contest in 2019 – or even before then, judging by the reasonable apprehension of fear among Nigerians over the alleged rather palpable partiality of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The nation’s Police, unfortunately, have been transmitting series of transmitting transmissions to suggest, without leaving many in doubt, that it is an interested party in the 2019 election.

But how can the people of Nigeria led by the PDP ensure the sacking of President Buhari on May 29, 2019 in the light of the above situation?

Before I go further, let me state clearly here that President Buhari no doubt appears to me to be a man with a golden heart to see that Nigeria is divested of corruption and corrupt politicians. Unfortunately, the President, based on empirical evidence of his tolerating – even celebrating evidently corrupt people who are with them or are blackmailed to join them – appears also to have only wooden, not golden, strategies to fairly or even actually enforce the golden ideas that could have birthed a corrupt free Nigeria.

As a result of the failure of the Buhari administration (same way as his former Buhari regime was said to have woefully failed in thoroughness or humaneness in the so-called fight against corruption) and the extant apparent penitence of the PDP over its 1999-2015 less than optimal stewardship to the Nigerian people, for which it was justifiably sacked by Nigerian people in 2015, it is now expected that the PDP, having learned a bitter lesson in power management, should now be invited by all Nigerians to return power to the people on May 29, 2019. It is hoped that the Party should continue the anti-corruption campaign of the outgoing APC administration, albeit with injection of three socioeconomic vaccines; Sincerity, Totality, Impartiality.

But what is the strategy to be adopted by the PDP to ensure that all her many aspirants each aptly qualified but apparently desperate, stay in the party to work the success after the primary – beyond wishful thinking or signing the usual undertaking that evidently lacks the force of law and over the years have been flouted after every election? I have developed a strategy, and it would be listed among the four steps I wish to suggest for ensuring that the forthcoming decisive primary of the PDP does not only not tear the party apart but also raise the revenue and solidarity base of the party. The following are my suggestions;

1. PDP must hold a very transparent primary election. If possible, direct primary. As much as possible, let the primary be held at the least contentious location. Ekiti would be such a nice idea and could demonstrate solidarity for the outgoing Fayose who was a great force for goodwill for the Party.  So that each delegate and aspirant would be assured of a level playing field, and the PDP would also enrich that state with their show of strength.

2. PDP should ban inducement of delegates of any kind and by any means. The Party should publish its budget for the welfare and logistics of each delegate and encourage each aspirant to make a donation to the central purse for this purpose and distribute this to the delegates equally. The Party should disqualify any aspirant who pays the bills of any delegate in whatever way or induces any delegate with money before, during or after the election. As much as possible, uniform dressings or any forms of unity lists should be banned – let each delegate be standing alone during the primaries and no state dressing should be allowed. If you want a different result, adopt different methods.

3. PDP should get all the Presidential Aspirants to sign a Presidential Aspirant Bond (PAB), deposed to on Oath at a High Court, with Affidavit including that they would stay in the party after the primary election and also work for the party or lose a Pledge Bond Deposit which shall be 40% of the budget that the Party estimates would be for the Presidential Campaign. This should discourage the jokers or those who, allegedly, have been planted by opposition for a spoiler game and this would also end the talk about moneybags. Getting 40% of each of about 10 aspirants would mean that the eventual candidate would have 75% more money than is needed for the campaign.  On the part of the Party and the Candidate, would undertake to give each of the aspirants certain named justiciable Privileges and Pledges, when the victory is secured. Everything should be written down and sealed on Oath, because Gentleman Agreements, from experience, seem not to work anymore among contemporary Nigeria politicians.

4. Each of the Aspirant should Sign a legally enforceable irrevocable document on Oath that the court should recognized his resignation from office in the event of his ever having to leave the Party before the end of the tenure he was elected to preside. Lawyers should not argue about the legality of this instrument but rather work towards its best application.

With the above four stratagem, and one secret strategy I would reveal only to the Chairman if he’s humble enough to ask, it would not be possible for the APC to resist the power of cohesion that would be among the Nigerian people when they decide to scream Enough is Enough, in 2019!

May God Bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria!

Nationwide Warning Strike: Delta NLC Enforces Labour Strike Over Poor Wage

0

-By Albert OGRAKA:

The Delta state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NUT), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the United Labour Congress (ULC) have enforced the stike order of the organized national labour body, in a bid to strenghten the union’s current negotiation with the Federal Government for increased minimum wage.

The organized labour had announced the commencemen of a nationwide warning strike in respect of the non implementation of the national minimum wage, effective from midnight of Wednesday, 26th September, 2018.

A statement signed by the General Secretary of the NLC, Dr Peter Ozo-Eson, urged to all industrial unions and state councils under it to commence mobilization immediately for an effective strike action nationwide.

Delta state NLC Chairman, Comrade Jonathan Jemirieyigbe, on Thursday, September 27, 2018 told Blank NEWS Online that the Union is currently enforcing the warning strike across the state, adding that workers in both private and public offices are to abide by the strike order, as it affects all Nigerian workers.

In the meantime, most public offices and schools as well as few private institutions in Delta state are under lock and key because the organized Labour Unions have commenced picketing the private and public operational sectors.

According to him, “It is a total warning strike action embarked upon by the organized Labour Unions. Offices were locked up at 12:00 midnight and now we are moving around to ensure strict compliance to the seven day warning strike action.

Comrade Jemirieyigbe, who encourages the private sector workers to comply with the directive explained that “By virtue of the main minimum wage law, any employer than can employ above five persons is supposed to implement the law and they also stand to gain from the struggle.”

While calling for public support for the Unions, the sate NLC boss advised members of the public to remain calm and also join the organized Labour Unions in order to actualize the struggle.

Blank NEWS Online checks shows that workers who were obliviousness of the strike action were stranded discovering that offices were locked up and most public schools closed up with stranded students and pupils milling around the premises in several groups.

Some commercial institutions offered skeletal services with trepidation and anxiety, just as other commercial businesses and transactions were also affected, leading to a rising surge and grid in traffic in the early hours of the day.

PDP National Convention: Party Leaders Disagree Over Venue **As Gov. Okowa Heads Convention Planning C’ttee

0

There are indications that the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are yet to agree on a venue for party’s presidential primaries fixed for Oct. 6, following a sharp disagreement between the leaders of the party on Monday in Abuja.

The disagreement between the Board of Trustees (BoT) and the National Working Committee (NWC) manifested at the inauguration of the party’s National Convention Planning Committee.

There was a  sharp disagreement between the chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) ,Sen. Walid Jibrin , and the National Working Committee (NWC) over the choice of venue.

Inaugurating the committee, PDP Deputy National Chairman (South) Elder, Yemi Akinwonmi, said that the party leaders had consulted widely on the venue and agreed for Port Harcourt, River.

“On the issue of venue, the party set up a committee headed by Ambassador Ibrahim Kazaure and they went round the South-South Zone and South-East Zone before coming out with the choice of Port Harcourt for us.

“As in acceptance, the National Working Committee (NWC) has consulted widely with the PDP Governors forum, we have consulted widely with the BOT, cacaus of the party and today it has been jointly accepted that we will converge on Port Harcourt, in no distance time for the National Convention.”

Akinwonmi added that the international community had expressed their interests in the party primaries.

“Particularly they said they Want, to come and watch the process the will lead to the emergency of our flag bearer, because by the grace of God our flag bearer will be the next President of Nigeria.”

Meanwhile, the chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) , Sen. Walid Jibrin, in his remarks said that the party had yet to make final decision on the choice of venue for the convention.

“Even though the Deputy Chairman said the issue of venue had been concluded, I want to say that the issue of venue is still on and is not concluded.

” Because there are many suggestions on the issue of venue. We look at all suggestions and I assure you that the issue of venue will be resolved.

“But for now we are working around the clock to ensure that we have a very suitable venue accepted by everybody.

“I want to say that everyone of us should come together and ensure that we have a venue suitable to all of us.”

Intervening on the matter, the secretary of the convention committee and Ebonyi  Governor, Dave Umahi, said “I think the working committee and the BOT need to settle this.”

Chairman of the convention committee, Ifeanyi Okowa, also speaking on the matter said PDP was ready to host the convention in any state eventually agreed on.

Okowa said that no matter where the convention was settled for PDP would do what was right.

“I believe that at the end of the day, nobody will have any cause to complain.”

Okowa, who appreciated the party for the assignment given to them said that they knew that the party was in very critical moments in the history of the nation and the PDP.

“We do understand that the assignment that you have given us is about the most important assignment in the history of this party at least for this year.

“All of us believe that the only way forward is for the entirety of the party to stay united and focused. And as such, as members of the PDP, we cannot afford to disagree on any issues.

“The thing that is needed is for a free and fair primary to be conducted for all our aspirants. And we are very definite that we will get it right.”

-Cricket is second only to football in the region –
-Survey commissioned by UAE Exchange –

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: Cricket’s popularity is striking in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), a demography that has historically been inclined towards football.

Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is the political and economic alliance of six Middle Eastern countries, namely Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman.

According to a pan-GCC YouGov survey commissioned by UAE Exchange, more than half (51%) of the people participating in survey from GCC are cricket fans.

To understand where cricket stands in terms of popularity, the sport was compared with other popular sports such as Football, Tennis, Formula 1 and Basketball.

Cricket enjoys a massive fan following in the GCC countries. As per the survey, 57% people in the UAE, 38% people in Bahrain, 37% in Oman and 45% people in Kuwait are fans of the sport.

“As the title sponsor of Asia Cup, Unimoni aims to engage with customers through a widely followed sport like cricket. Engagement is a two-way dialogue for us, which is why we commissioned a YouGov survey to understand how our audiences feel about cricket, and what they expect from the tournament,” said Rahul Pai, Chief Operating Officer of Unimoni Group.

“The survey reflects the growing popularity of cricket in the REGION, with more than half of the respondents turning out to be fans of the game. It’s really interesting to see that 32% of cricket fans in the region chose cricket as their preferred sport, a very close second to football, which garnered 34% of the votes. This reflects the cultural diversity in the GCC countries which is promoting the exchange of values, especially those of sports,” Rahul continued.

When asked which cricketer will emerge as the top player in the Unimoni Asia Cup, 18% of respondents across GCC voted for India’s batsman Rohit Sharma, while 15% voted for Pakistan’s bowler Hasan Ali.

The first Asia Cup was hosted in Sharjah in 1984. The sport has since then seen significant increase in followership, resulting in increased investment in cricket facilities across GCC. The UAE is home to three state-of-the-art stadiums in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi.

“As a brand that facilitates seamless money movement across geographies, we are proud to be part of Asia Cup, sharing the excitement of cricket with fans in the region and around the world,” Rahul concluded.

Fear, Panic As FG Designate Delta State National Disaster Zone …Osinbajo, Okowa Inspect Flood Ravaged Communities

0

*Gov. Okowa Gets Kudos On Proactive Steps

*Reads Riot Act To Coastal Residents

-By Albert OGRAKA:

The Federal Government of Nigeria has designated Delta State as National Disaster Zone with three other states of the country, following the ravaging flood that has continued to submerge coastal communities in the state.

Nigeria’s Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo made the pronouncement in Asaba on Thursday, September 20 when he inspected flood ravaged communities in the state, alongside the Governor of Delta State, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa and Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr. Chris Ngige.

This development has however heightened fear and panic across the state, especially as most affected people find it difficult to move from their riverside communities to the populated uplands, due to poverty in the state and country.

“We are trapped in our communities. Government has said we should move out. Should we fly from the riverside to the upland with our loved ones? There is no money to move out and we cannot continue to wait until government officials arrive late when the whole place is flooded already,” a sad Deltans grieved.

The Vice President, who expressed satisfaction with the proactive measures taken by Governor Okowa’s administration to reduce the effect of the flood on the people who were at the impacted communities said, “I am very touched seeing these persons who are affected by flood, I know how disruptive it is for those who are affected.”

Speaking at one of the holding camps set up for the displaced persons in Asaba, Oshimili South local government area of the state, Prof. Osinbajo said, “I thank the Governor of Delta State for setting up this holding camp, the facilities are adequate, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in the next 24 hours, will send relief materials to the state,” Prof. Osimbanjo said, disclosing that following the effect of the flood, the Federal Government has designated Delta State as National Disaster Zone with three other states of the country.

The Vice President assured that the Federal Government will not only contribute to ensure the welfare of the flood victims while they are at the holding camps but, will work to properly resettle them in their communities after the flood must have receded.

Governor Okowa who accompanied the Vice President on visits to impacted communities, in a brief speech at the holding camp, thanked the Federal Government for their speedy response to the flood situation.

He observed that the state was bracing up for more impact of the flood as water in the affected states would pass through Delta State to empty into the Atlantic Ocean.

The governor thanked the displaced persons for embracing government programmes aimed at evacuating them to safety, stating, “though, we are aware that property, farm produce have been destroyed, our major concern is to save life, we are aware that the coming days may be more challenging as the flood is expected to rise, but, our people are prepared to ensure that Deltans are not left at the impacted communities; we are praying that the flood recedes fast for our people to return to their normal life.”

Prior to the VPs visit, Governor Okowa had ordered the State’s flood Management committee to move into impacted communities and evacuate people who are yet to relocate to camps established for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs)

According to the governor, “this is an emergency situation, move the buses to the communities, use speed boats where necessary and comb all the impacted communities, bring out any of our persons remaining in those communities to the IDP camps.”

“From what we have heard, the flood water is rising, you can see that apart from Oko Amakom, the other communities have been submerged; it is an unfortunate situation, thank God we embarked on early awareness campaign and our people listened,” the governor stated.

Denuclearisation: North, South Korea Presidents Parley

0

For the third time in a year South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in will be meeting his North Korean counterpart Kim Jong Un to try to resolve deadlocked nuclear diplomacy (Denuclearisation) with Pyongyang.

Moon’s goals for Tuesday’s meeting will also be to ease a decades-long military standoff and promote peace on a Korean Peninsula that many feared was close to war last year.

The South Korean president said ahead of his trip that he will push for “irreversible, permanent peace” and for better dialogue between Pyongyang and Washington during “heart-to-heart” talks with Kim.

Moon’s chief of staff, however, played down the chance that Moon’s summit with Kim will produce major progress in nuclear diplomacy.

A presidential plane carrying Moon left a military airport near Seoul on Tuesday morning.

The plane was to fly in an indirect route off the west coast of the Korean Peninsula before turning inland and arriving at Pyongyang’s international airport about 80 minutes later, Moon’s office said.

A group of about 150 business, entertainment and sports leaders streamed onto the government aircraft before Moon left.

Since taking office in May last year, Moon has met Kim twice at the Koreas’ shared border village of Panmunjom.

His Pyongyang trip makes him the third South Korean leader to visit North Korea’s capital for an inter-Korean summit since the peninsula was divided into a Soviet-backed North and U.S.-backed South at the end of World War II in 1945.

Flooding: NEMA Declares National Disaster In Delta, Kogi, Anambra, Niger

0

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has declared a ‘national disaster’ in Kogi, Anambra, Delta and Niger, following high levels of flooding in the states.

Mr. Mustapha Maihaja, NEMA Director-General made the declaration during an assessment visit to River Niger on Monday in Lokoja.

Maihaja said that eight other states were also on NEMA’s watch list.

Datti Ahmed, spokesman of the agency said separately that about 100 people have died in 10 states as a result of the flooding.

Maihaja  explained that the states were experiencing the high levels of flooding as a result of heavy rainfall.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that NEMA assessment visit was also to sympathise with residents of Lokoja since the rise of water on the River Niger had started submerging some of their houses and their farm land.

According to Maihaja, the rise in the water level as at Sept. 17, was already 11.06 meter high, hence the need to be proactive before the situation gets out of hand.

Maihaja said that NEMA had been constantly observing the flood situation across the nation since the pronouncement by the National Hydrological Service Agency (NIHSA) that there was going to be much rain in 2018.

The DG said that the pronouncement by NIHSA made relevant stakeholders in disasters management to have series of meetings in preparation for flood, and thereafter issued a red alert to the states which the flood is likely to affect.

“The increasing rise of the flood make us to put Nigerians on red alert, part of our operational structure is to establish disasters response team across the nation.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has mandated this delegation to do everything possible to curb this disaster situation.

“Lokoja and other Kogi environs seem to be the most threatening state since the rise level of the flood. We are sent here today to assess the situation and take informed action to tackle the menace,” Maihaja said.

Maihaja added that some relief materials have already been sent to the states where the flood had been affected to assist the people.

In his response, the Deputy Governor of Kogi State, Mr Simon Achuba thanked the NEMA DG and his team for the visit and for providing the relief materials earlier sent to the state.

According to Achuba, the 2018 flooding was coming higher and the devastating effect was likely to be higher than that of the 2012, which submerged most of the communities.

Achuba said that there was no better time to declare a ‘state of emergency’ than now in order to make the people living at the riverine area leave because of the flooding.

“Some of these people living in the riverine area will not leave because of their agricultural activities but we still need to do our part to declare emergency.

“NEMA should look at this and begin to educate people on the dangers of living close to the river.

“The water transport system can be enhanced for people to move out of that area whenever there is flooding,” Achuba said.

The Deputy Governor also called for cordial collaboration between the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and NEMA for effective disaster control.

He added that the SEMA lacked so many equipment to use in disasters which have made their job difficult with little or no impact felt by the people.

Achuba, however, said that the relief materials sent to the state by NEMA would be equitably distributed to the people affected by the flood.

Abuja Court Dismisses Case Against Nigerian Journalist Jones Abiri

0

New York, September 18, 2018–An Abuja magistrate’s court on Monday struck out a case against Jones Abiri, publisher and editor-in-chief of the newspaper, Weekly Source, Samuel Ogala, a lawyer who represents Abiri, told CPJ. The court ruled that it did not have jurisdiction over the state where the alleged wrongdoing took place, Ogala said. Abiri, who was detained without charge for over two years until his release last month, was accused of criminal intimidation for allegedly sending text messages demanding payment from two oil companies in Nigeria’s southern Bayelsa state, according to CPJ research. CPJ could not determine if prosecutors plan to file charges in Bayelsa state.

“Jones Abiri’s arrest, detention, and subsequent criminal prosecution is a stain on Nigeria’s press freedom record, but the court’s decision to end the case against him is an important and positive step,” said CPJ Africa Program Coordinator Angela Quintal. “The Nigerian government should seize this opportunity to take further action to improve conditions for journalists and ensure they can work without fear of arrest or prosecution.”

In a separate legal decision on September 13, a federal high court in Abuja held that the Department of State Security’s detention of Abiri was illegal and violated his fundamental human rights, Ogala told CPJ. The court ordered the federal government to pay Abiri 10.5 million naira (US$29,000) in damages and litigation fees, according to Ogala and Marshal Abubakar, another lawyer representing Abiri.

The Press would also be in position to print the State’s Yearly Calendar, Christmas Greeting Cards and Diaries which were hitherto carried out through contracts. The Press would be in a position to take up printing of documents from the general public, all MDAs including the State Polytechnics, the State University, Primary and Secondary Schools across the State. The plan is to facilitate the generation of funds by the Press as it would be commercialized.

“The construction of a modern secretariat complex for the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council is already at a high level of completion. His Excellency, the Governor has shown much commitment to the welfare of Journalists in the State. “A holistic package of the State Brand Identity consist of the Seal of the State, the Crest of His Excellency, the Governor, the Crest of His Excellency, the Deputy Governor, the State Flag and the State Anthem (rebirth). Since the unveiling of the brand, it has to a great extent influenced the perception of Deltans on how they see and understand themselves, their beliefs, needs, and interests as a unique set of people. As a result of the re-branding of the state, His Excellency, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, won the ADVAN Award courtesy of the Advertising Association of Nigeria (ADVAN) for its brand building” he said.

On Delta Broadcasting Service, Warri and Asaba, he said “ On the assumption of office, it was discovered that the Delta Broadcasting Service, Asaba and Warri  were bedeviled with so many challenges despite efforts made by the previous administrations to provide broadcasting equipment for both television and radio arms. A meeting of the relevant stakeholders was convened by the Ministry which led to the constitution of a team to assess the challenges faced by the stations. The findings of the team guide the Ministry to strategised its plan to resolve the identified challenges in short, medium and long terms.

“So far, all the identified short term challenges have been resolved. These included getting, the contracting firm, COMFAX to open and handover the three-camera studio at the Warri Station that was locked up for so long, getting COMFAX to replace parts of the digital radio equipment affected by lightening in Warri Station, carrying out an audit of the contract to ascertain liabilities to the contractor and consultant with the intention to determine contract, resolving the problem caused by the bad antenna at Asaba and installing a new earthling systems to replace the non-functional ones in Warri, Asaba and Ubulu-Uku where non-existed.

“The Ministry was in the process of resolving the challenges classified as medium term when the flood disaster of Saturday 22nd July 2017 occurred and submerged the entire premises of Asaba Station including the offices, the digital and production studios and the transmission halls of the radio and television arms of the Service. The equipment and gadgets lost to the flood setback the effort of the government to put the station at the peak of broadcasting. The ministry had to take some urgent measures which His Excellency graciously approved to get the station back on air. Some of the equipment damaged by the flood including one of the transmitters of the radio arm has been repaired. Other crucial equipment that needs urgent attention and which are being plan for presently includes the UPS in Warri, Asaba and Ubulu-Uku, Radio Transmitter B in DBS Asaba and TV Transmitter A at Ubulu-Uku.

“Having restored the station back on air, the ministry proceeded to start resolving the challenges classified as medium term. Some of the medium term challenges already resolved include the replacement of the bad UHF-TV antenna which have been successfully installed and is being used to beam signals on the terrestrial in Asaba and its environs as well as to Ubulu-Uku for onward transmission to the entire state and beyond, a surge protector which was damaged beyond repairs has been replaced, the two existing Larcan Magnum Transmitters (5Kw) of the TV arm of the Asaba Station has been repaired, the character generating machine has been repaired, the Industrial AVR of the television arm has been repaired, a new feeder line that was at Ubulu-Uku which was not in use was brought to Asaba and installed to replace the bad one in Asaba, and the mast which had become dangerous for lack of maintenance was renovated and tensioned. The ministry also repaired and replaced some of the faulty digital studio lighting equipment at Delta Broadcasting Service, Asaba.”

The commissioner hinted that the ministry was presently in the process of upgrading the locally constructed television transmitter which is in use at DBS Warri from 1Kw to 5Kw to enable the signals which are only received in some parts of Warri to get to Ughelli, Sapele, Ozoro and beyond.

“Though the digital switch over program is on, it may take another one to three years to completely get the populace to key in and for the National Broadcasting Commission to shut down transmission on the Ultra High Frequency (UHF)”, he said, adding,.”It is important to note here that majority of Deltans still depend on signals from the Ultra High Frequency (UHF). The ministry therefore wants to keep up broadcasting on the terrestrial to ensure that government activities are effectively communicated to Deltans.”

He also revealed that a 33KVA lines has been provided at Asaba and Ubulu-Uku  to resolved the issue of power supply which has rendered the station ineffective for a long time.

On the third phase activities planned as long term measures to reposition the station, Mr Ukah said that the ministry targets the accomplishment of full digitalization as earlier earmarked before the flood. The ministry has entered into an agreement with Pinnacle Communications limited, the signal distributor assigned by the Federal Government of Nigeria through the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to handle the Digital Switch On (DSO) in Delta State.

Uduaghan Hails N’Delta Youths On Nation Building, Unveils Plans For Isoko Youths

Immediate past Governor of Delta State and APC 2019 Delta South Senatorial hopeful, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan has said that Niger Delta youth leaders were becoming articulate and active contributors to nation building.

Uduaghan was a Special Guest of Honour at the maiden Isoko Youth Summit organized by the Comrade Ovie Umuakpo-led Executive of the Isoko National Youth Association (INYA) at the Civic Centre in Oleh at the weekend.

Dr. Uduaghan who is a big fan of progressive-minded youths used the opportunity to speak to Isoko youth on the theme: “Retooling the Isoko Youth for Good Governance and Political Participation.”

He remarked that he had always been an admirer of the Isoko nation, especially the academically-inclined Umuakpo-led INYA, who had won his heart via an interview program on one of the national television.

He hailed the Isoko youth leader’s vibrancy on the said program and admitted that Niger Delta youth leaders were becoming articulate and active contributors to nation building.

The former Governor stated that Isoko youths must enthrone education in their activities if they wished to be involved in the engine room of governance; adding that the dynamics has tilted away from “deve” and violent arm-twisting of government or oil firms so as to get humongous compensations and contracts to service expensive lifestyles.

Continuing, he made a case for more educated Niger Delta Youths to be at the helm of youth groups as their knowledge come very handy in partnering with developmental initiatives for the economic advancement of their area. He also tasked them to acquire requisite skills that would make them employable.

“Yes, the oil companies might be at your backyard but if you’re unemployable, you leave them no choice but to hire competent hands from other areas. But when you are skilled, even the government would join in your cause because no father wants his son to suffer in the midst of plenty.”

The APC Delta South Senatorial Hopeful anchored his speech on his plans for youths when he emerges Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, in 2019.

“Our youth must strive to be peaceful and united in their agitation. Peace gives birth to good children any day. By God’s grace, when the people of Delta South give me their senatorial mandate in the next election, I will largely involve our youths in the security of our communities as well as oil installations therein. It would be a win-win for our youths who would be paid for securing a peaceful business environment for investors and companies to operate optimally. This will run concurrently with the 5% community ownership of industries that I am proposing in our area. As a crisis manager, I know that once communities have a sense of ownership in the operations of companies, they will protect their facilities jealously.”

Isoko Nation Advocates For Rotation Of Delta South Senatorial Seat

0

-By Michael EKOKORUWE:

The President General of Isoko Development Union (IDU), High Chief Iduh Amadhe says, rotation of the senate position in South Senatorial district between Isoko, Itsekiri and Ijaw ethnic nationalities, will foster equity, justice and fair play in the actualization of true democracy in the present political dispensation.

Amadhe made the statement during the visit of Itsekiri leaders to Isoko development union, held at the National secretariat Oleh, Isoko South local government area of Delta State.

He stated that a joint meeting of traditional rulers, the political class and community leaders from Ijaw, Itsekiri and Isoko be put together to adopt the former rotational method of the South Senatorial seat, which according to him is the solution to the present fourth and fifth agenda of occupying the Senatorial seat. Amadhe who condemned such agenda also described it as repugnant, political brigandage and alien to natural justice and equity.

Amadhe maintained that a maximum of two terms for each of the three ethnic groups of Isoko, Ijaw and Itsekiri for the senatorial seat, be strictly adhered through agreement and published communiqué.  While analyzing the narrative of how the senatorial seat has been, Amadhe urged the leaders of Itsekiri to interact with Ijaw leaders before the joint meeting of the three ethnic groups.

Earlier, Chief Mene Brown while speaking on behalf of Itsekiri leaders commended patrons and leaders of Isoko development union for the warm reception, stating that HRM Ogieme Ikenwoli, the Olu of Warri sent them for the interactive visit. He said Isoko, Ijaw and Itsekiri senatorial seat is for the three ethnic groups that demands planning and mutual understanding, which according to him informed the visit.

Chief Mene Brown condemned a situation of fighting for the senatorial seat by the three ethnic groups and advised on the rotational method not on political party basis but on ethnic nationality basis.

He said any senator occupying the seat represents the three ethnic groups, noting that each ethnic nationality should support the other during elections. He posited that the three ethnic groups are to communicate and exchange ideas for a common goal.

In attendance were Chief Dennis Etaluku, Dr. Chief Idodo Umeh, Sir Simeon Efenudu, the women wing and executive of Isoko development union, president generals from various Isoko communities among others.

NYSC Exemption Certificate Brouhaha: Kemi Adeosun’s Resignation Letter As Minister Of Finance

0

14th September, 2018

His Excellency

Muhammadu Buhari

President, Federal Republic of Nigeria

State House

Aso Villa

Abuja

Dear Excellency,

Let me commence by thanking you profusely for the honour and privilege of serving under your inspirational leadership. It has been a truly rewarding experience to learn from you and to observe at close quarters your integrity and sense of duty.

I have, today, become privy to the findings of the investigation into the allegation made in an online medium that the Certificate of Exemption from National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) that I had presented was not genuine. This has come as a shock to me and I believe that in line with this administration’s focus on integrity, I must do the honourable thing and resign.

Your Excellency, kindly permit me to outline some of the background to this matter. I was born and raised in the United Kingdom, indeed my parental family home remains in London. My visits to Nigeria up until the age of thirty-four (34) were holidays, with visas obtained in my UK passport. I obtained my first Nigerian passport at the age of thirty-four (34) and when I relocated there was debate as to whether NYSC Law applied to me. Upon enquiry as to my status relating to NYSC, I was informed that due to my residency history and having exceeded the age of thirty (30), I was exempted from the requirement to serve. Until recent events, that remained my understanding.

On the basis of that advice and with the guidance and assistance of those, I thought were trusted associates, NYSC were approached for documentary proof of status. I then received the certificate in question. Having never worked in NYSC, visited the premises, been privy to nor familiar with their operations, I had no reason to suspect that the certificate was anything but genuine. Indeed, I presented that certificate at the 2011 Ogun State House of Assembly and in 2015 for Directorate of State Services (DSS) Clearance as well as to the National Assembly for screening. Be that as it may, as someone totally committed to a culture of probity and accountability I have decided to resign with effect from Friday, 14th September, 2018.

Your Excellency, It has been an exceptional privilege to have served our nation under your leadership and to have played a role in steering our economy at a very challenging time. I am proud that Nigeria has brought discipline into its finances, has identified and is pursuing a path to long term sustainable growth that will unlock the potential in this great economy. Under your leadership, Nigeria was able to exit recession and has now started to lay the foundations for lasting growth and wealth creation. Repositioning this huge economy is not a short term task and there are no short cuts, indeed there are tough decisions still to be made but I have no doubt that your focus on infrastructural investment, revenue mobilisation and value for money in public expenditure will deliver growth, wealth and opportunity for all Nigerians.

I thank His Excellency, the Vice President and my colleagues in the Federal Executive Council for the huge pleasure and honour of working with them. I also thank most specially, the team in the ‘Finance Family’ of advisers and heads of agencies under the Ministry of Finance. Your Excellency, this group of committed Nigerians represent a range of backgrounds, ethnicities and ages. They have worked well above and beyond the call of duty to support me in the tasks assigned. The diversity in my team and their ability to work cohesively to deliver reforms, convinces me that Nigeria has the human capital required to succeed.

Your Excellency, let me conclude by commending your patience and support, during the long search for the truth in this matter. I thank you again for giving me the honour of serving under your leadership, it is a rare privilege, which I do not take for granted. As a Nigerian and committed progressive, I appreciate you for your dogged commitment to improving this nation.

Please be assured, as always, of my highest regards and best wishes

Illegal Detention: Court Orders DSS To Pay Journalist, Abiri N10

0

A Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Nnamdi Dimgba has ordered the Department of State Services (DSS) to pay Mr. Jones Abiri, the sum of N10 million being damages for his illegal detention.

Abiri, a Bayelsa-based journalists and publisher of online portal, crackreporers.com and Weekly Source newspaper was detained illegally for two years, after a trump up accusation by the DSS of involvement in militancy.

After gross violation of his constitutional rights he was however arraigned in July following widespread condemnation and released on bail.

Ruling on the application by Abiri that he should be paid the sum of N200 million as compensation for the illegal detention and torture, the court condemned in totality the action of the DSS.

It therefore ordered that the sum of N10 million should be paid to the journalist.

In his ruling, Dimgba said his detention for two years was equal in effect to a conviction which was wrong.

He explained that the government should have arraigned him and prayed the court not to grant him bail.

He said the excuse that he was detained for national interest was untenable.

-By Michael EKOKORUWE:

Isoko South chapter of the Delta State Artisan’s Council members have been urged to collect their PVC as it is the ticket to vote the right candidate of their choice.

The chairman of the chapter, Comrade Ewhre E. Richard made the call during the general monthly meeting of the union held at Oleh, Isoko South local government area of Delta State.

Comrade Ewhre charged members of the union that have registered to collect their PVC and ensure that others are informed as well. He called on staffs of BEDC in Isoko to have a change of attitude and ensure that the light is stable to satisfy their customers. He maintained that paying for light bills every month which is not availability for use, calls for serious concern.

Governor Udom Emmanuel has urged aspirants showing interest in his seat to first tell Akwa Ibom people how they are making good use of their current public offices to the benefit of the people of the state.

Speaking with Government House reporters shortly on arrival from official engagements at the Ibom International Airport, Governor Emmanuel dismissed the All Progressives Congress in the state, saying they don’t have sound people with any genuine agenda for the state.

Apparently ruing the failure of the NDDC under the headship of Mr Nsima Ekere to execute any tangible project in Akwa Ibom in the last three years, Governor Emmanuel quipped, “If those they want to bring control budgets of nine states and all the IOCs and you are in Akwa Ibom, you’ve been here over how many years now, we’ve not seen even a kilometre of road commissioned with such mongoose sum of money, so what will they now do when they pledged to do 4 years?

He dismissed the promise of a one term by the APC promoters, saying, “in four years, how many investors will you talk to? So how many of those factories will arrive for our people to work in?”

He urged his opponents to, “tell Akwa Ibom people what are they going to do for Akwa Ibom. I have never heard that for once.”

The governor said anyone who controls all the monies of the International Oil Companies, two percent of their budgets plus budgets of 9 states and you don’t have a kilometre of road to show. Even the village you come from, there is no transformer, So what magic will you perform?”

Governor Emmanuel said his administration can show a lot that he has done in the state in the last three years, and it would be appropriate to also have a glimpse of the programmes and ideas they are bringing to the table.

“It is not a time for story telling. Let’s look at whether people are coming to loot the little that we have or they are actually coming to add value,” Mr. Emmanuel added.

The governor who was impressed with the number of aspirants gunning for the country’s number one plum job on the platform of his party, said it was an indication that the PDP was the most sought after party which has the solutions to the myriads of problems plaguing the country.

“I want to believe, at the end of the day, whoever we will bring out as a candidate should have a whole lot of solutions to the problems in this country.

While saying that the State has established a total of 25 farm enterprise clusters, as owners and managers across the State, Prof. Eboh explained that these farm enterprise clusters are vital for; sustaining youth interest in Agriculture, demonstrating improved Agricultural technologies and practices and promoting enterprise viability as well as ensuring high levels of agricultural productivity and sustainability.

He pointed out that the Government of Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa was succeeding in using agricultural value chain to affect the lives of Deltans as the cluster model is yielding desired impacts in transforming the agricultural landscape and agricultural prosperity in the state.

At Deghele YAGEP rice farm cluster that was established in 2018 in Sapele Local Government Area, the chief job creation officer, Prof. Eboh disclosed that the YAGEP rice farm occupied an expanse of forty-two hectares of land.

While conducting the media team round the farm where harvesting and threshing of rice was taking place by the 21 YAGEPreneurs trained in rice production, Prof. Eboh noted that there is room for expansion in subsequent cycles.

He charged the beneficiaries to remain dedicated to ensure that they come out as successful trainees.

At Ugbokodo-Okpe YAGEP fish cluster in Okpe Local Government Area, Prof. Ebo who took journalists round the two hundred and forty-four ponds said that the Ugbokodo YAGEP fish farm cluster is the largest cluster in the state.

While assuring them of Government assistance, Prof. Eboh who advised the YAGEP trainee to live in peace with the host community said the fish ponds were established with one hundred and fifty-four ponds last year with addition of extra ninety ponds this year.

Delta State First Lady and founder of 05 Initiative, Her Excellency, Dame Edith Okowa on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 led Deltans in commemorating the 2018 International Day of Charity by paying the hospital bills of 25 indigent patients who were discharged but could not pay their hospital bills at the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba.

Dame Edith Okowa who disclosed that the N5.1million was raised by good spirited persons in the state explained that the state government had no contribution in the venture as it was 100 percent the contribution of private and good spirited individuals.

Speaking at the event, tagged International Day of Charity, she said the charity day was instituted by the United Nations on September 5 to commemorate the death of Mother Theresa who worked tirelessly to reach out to the poor, noting that the event was set aside to increase solidarity, social responsibility, volunteerism and public support.

She said all over the world, people have needs and sometimes impossible to get help due to circumstances beyond their immediate control, adding that some with various health concerns are in the hospital they cannot afford to buy their drugs let alone pay their bills.

She said the event was not actually to make noise but to raise public awareness on the need for charity work, noting that being alive does not necessarily mean ‘we are the best but what we do today is what we will reap tomorrow.’

For her, it is not only the rich that should give help but every Nigerian should give as giving is a spirit that should be imbibed by all human beings.

The governor’s wife who has been involved in charity works across Delta state, some of which were the free eye care given to Deltans who had suffered from cataract and other eye challenges, said the event was an opportunity to cash in to contribute ‘our quota to humanity.’

She said her driving force in all humanitarian works was a section of the Bible, Matthew Chapter 25: 35-36 which quotes “I was hungry and ye gave me meat, I was thirsty and ye gave me drink, I was a stranger and ye took me in, naked and ye clothed me, I was in prison and ye came to me.”

She commended the management of the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, under the leadership of Dr. Victor Osiatuma, whom she said admitted and treated many of the patients without demanding for payment prior to attending to their health challenges.

Chief Medical Director of the FMC, Dr. Victor Osiatuma, commended Dame Okowa for her charity works across the state, saying she has been instrumental in assisting poor patients in the hospital.

He said she has been putting smiles on the faces of people who had lost hope through many of her programmes, among which are the sickle centres, the free health programmes and her charity works.

Last year, specifically, September 5, 2017, the governor’s wife also, through the pet project, 05 initiative, spent over N2.3million to bail out 13 patients who also could not pay their medical bills at the same hospital.

Those discharged in 2017 but detained for being indebted to the hospital included Chukwunyem Esther, N310, 850, Chukwudi Joshua, N135, 700, Okolie Ifeanyi, N439, 200, Ubong Kingsley, N307, 050, Onwugbolu Sunday, N221, 000, Oki John, 422, 000, Obi Jerry, N216, 350, Obianke Onyisi-Ken, N171, 850, Okoh Patrick, N597, 700 and Edhu Ejiro, N160, 850 with a 20 per cent discount of N596, 510.

Responding, a beneficiary of the September 11, 2018 world charity day, Mrs. Promise Lazarus, expressed happiness over the gesture, noting that the governor’s wife, the people of Delta state and the management of the Federal Medical Centre have been magnanimous to her and other patients.

TOMPOLO’S STOLEN N10 BILLION PROPERTY: GROUP WANTS NAVAL PERSONNEL INVOLVED BROUGHT TO BOOK

0

The Niger Delta Indigenous Movement For  Radical Change (NDIMRC) has called on Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship, NNS Delta, Commodore Ibrahim Dewo not to leave any stone unturned in bringing to book the Naval Personnel involved in the alleged stealing of N10 Billion property of ex-militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo.

Recalled that three Navy Personnel deployed to protect the facilities at Tompolo’s Waterfront and Jetty, near Chevron Clinic, Edjeba, Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State, confiscated on the order of a Federal High Court by the  Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, were caught, July 22, 2018, carting away a Transformer from the premises with civilian accomplices.

NDIMRC in a Press Statement signed by its President, Nelly Emma, Secretary, John Sailor and Public Relations Officer (PRO), Stanley Mukoro, demanded for for  a proper probe into the case.

According to the Press Statement; ” First and foremost, we want to commend the Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship, NNS Delta, Commodore Ibrahim Dewo for his prompt response to the case of the looting of the property of Tompolo by some Navy Personnel. But we want to implore him to do more by ensuring that  those involved in the criminal act are made to face the music. There should be no hiding place for those giving the Navy a bad name. The law must be allowed to take its full course. We are not going to rest until  the perpetrators are exposed and tried properly. Justice must be done to this case “.

“We want to let Commodore Ibrahim Dewo to know that property worth over N15 Billion were in the premises of Tompolo when they were seized by the Federal, this is known to the two former Commanders of the NNS Delta. All efforts made by one of the younger brothers of Tompolo to prevail on the former Commanders to prevent the looting of the property proved abortive as these former Commanders turned hostile to all those connected to Tompolo, they refused to be advised on the need to prevent the stealing of the seized property and they encouraged Naval men to feast on the property. If the former Commanders worked the way Commodore Dewo is working, the looting would have been checked. We are impressed with the efforts of the current Commander of the NNS Delta who  has been doing his best and working round the clocks since  his resumption  to safeguard the confiscated property and we want to urge him to take it upon himself to make sure that those involved in the stealing of the property do not go unpunished”, the group stated.

The group also said that; ” We sincerely appreciate the efforts of Commodore Dewo in safeguarding the Property of Tompolo since his resumption. We want to plead with him to do everything possible to ensure that the case is not swept under the carpet. The three identified suspects, Lance Corporal Usman Shaibu, Staff Sergeant P.O. Ekong, Sergeant L.S. Elijah and those that aided and abetted them be made to face the music, there should be no cover up of this case. We trust that the hardworking boss of NNS Delta will never support criminality by his men as our investigation revealed that the  Navy is actually dealing with the situation”.

“We made bold to say that the looted properties were acquired legally by Tompolo through  hard work and no efforts should be spared in recovering them from those who stole them and the perpetrators punished. We urge the Commander of the NNS Delta, Commodore Dewo to take this issue to the Chief of Naval Staff  for thorough justice to be done”, the group added.

OPINION>>UDUAGHAN: A MAN IN A CRISIS OF CONSCIENCE, SAYS DELTA PDP

0

The Delta State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has dismissed as a “pipedream” the statement credited to a former Governor of the State, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, that the APC “will wrest power from the PDP” in 2019.

In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Dr. Ifeanyi Michael Osuoza, the party said that the boast by Uduaghan was “completely laughable” and “further proof that the former Governor still has not learnt any political lesson from the humiliating defeat he suffered at the hands of then Senator Ifeanyi Okowa at the PDP primaries in 2014, when he (Uduaghan) used the full apparatus of the State to sponsor and support another candidate. As Governor, Dr Okowa has endeared himself to majority of Deltans with his stellar achievements in all sectors of the economy. They cannot wait to re-elect him come 2019.”

According to Osuoza, “when it comes to politics and elections in Delta State, Dr. Uduaghan should realise that he is less than a featherweight. Does he even know how he became Governor in the first place? In 2019, we shall ensure that he is exiled into political oblivion once and for all.”

The PDP spokesman referred to Uduaghan’s assertion that the PDP “has never protected its own” as the ranting of a drowning man clutching at every available straw for political survival and relevance.

“Governor Uduaghan was actually referring to himself when he made that statement. This was exactly what he did when he was leader of the party as governor. Out of sheer arrogance and vaulting ambition, he estranged many PDP members with his bad leadership style and worked hard to frustrate and impoverish many of them.

“It was part of his treacherous plan to undermine and usurp the position of our political leader, Chief James Onanefe Ibori, and create his own political empire. Dr. Uduaghan left behind a party that was fractured and near disintegration. But thank God that under Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, the PDP in Delta State has regained its status as a united, cohesive and formidable force.”
According to the Publicity Secretary, Dr. Uduaghan’s claim that “I don’t expect Ibori to think I betrayed him,” is the statement of a traitor facing the torment of his own soul. The party berated the former Governor for biting the fingers that fed him, adding that Dr Uduaghan is a man in a crisis of conscience.

Volkswagen Signs MOU With Nigerian Govt To Develop Automotive Hub

0
  • Volkswagen has identified Nigeria as a country with significant potential for the growth in the new vehicle market
  • The Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) to develop a joint vision to secure the development of Nigeria as an automotive hub
  • An enabling policy framework that facilitates this vision to be developed based on commercial viability

Abuja/Wolfsburg – During the visit of the Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel to Nigeria, Volkswagen took the opportunity to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the presence of both the Chancellor and His Excellency, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja to develop a joint vision for an automotive hub in that country. The Head of Volkswagen Sub-Saharan Region, Thomas Schaefer signed the agreement on behalf of Volkswagen with the Nigeria’s Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment,  Dr. Okey Enelamah.

The Volkswagen Brand thus took the next step in expanding its influence and presence in Sub-Saharan Africa. This comes a day after the signing of the MoU in Ghana in the presence of Chancellor Merkel and Vice President of Ghana, Mahamudu Bawumia whereby Volkswagen committed to set up a vehicle assembly and conduct a detailed feasibility study for the development of an integrated Mobility Solution in Ghana.

In the MoU, Volkswagen undertakes to implement a phased approach in relation to the assembly of vehicles, initially from assembly kits with the long term view of establishing Nigeria as an automotive hub on the West Coast of Africa. This will include establishing a training academy in conjunction with the German Government, which will train the initial employees. The academy will also provide broader technical training in automotive skills. It is also intended that a comprehensive Volkswagen vehicle and service network is developed in the country subject to commercial viability.

In turn the Nigerian Government undertakes to accelerate the approval of the Nigerian Automotive Policy, currently under consideration. This includes the gradual transition from the importation of used cars to the manufacture and distribution of new passenger vehicles.

The Government has committed to providing a conducive legislative environment that will encourage the manufacturing of motor vehicles in Nigeria.

Nigeria’s Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment,  Dr. Okey Enelamah, who signed on behalf of his government, said: “The MoU is a major step in our walk towards the development of the automotive industry to achieve its potential contribution to the continuous economic development of the country.”

“We believe in the strategic and catalytic role of the automotive industry in the diversification of the Nigerian economy and we remain committed to encouraging and partnering with relevant stakeholders, especially investors and friends of Nigeria. Our overall objective is to restore assembly and develop local content, thereby creating employment, acquiring technology and reducing pressure on the country’s balance of payment, ” added Dr. Enelamah

Thomas Schaefer commented: “This week Volkswagen has been able to demonstrate with conviction that it is serious about its intentions in Sub-Saharan Africa. We are well placed to become a dominant player in Africa, as the continent continues to stabilise and develop economically, as the last frontier for the automotive industry.”

Volkswagen has a fully-fledged manufacturing facility in South Africa, and assembles vehicles in Kenya, Algeria as well as in Rwanda, in conjunction with an Integrated Mobility Solution offering Community Car Sharing and shortly to be launched Ride Hailing.

Under its TRANSFORM 2025+ brand strategy, Volkswagen is strengthening the regions and focusing on new up-and-coming markets. Alongside North and South America as well as China, the Sub-Sahara region plays an increasingly important role. Although the African automotive market is comparatively small today, the region could develop into an automotive growth market of the future.

Volkswagen will continue to grow its importer network in Sub-Saharan Africa and explore other opportunities for growth and development. As a next step, exploratory talks are being held with the Government of Ethiopia.

“We are only starting with our initiatives in Africa and will continue to develop sales and service networks where applicable. We are also looking at future assembly locations to determine if the markets have the potential and the necessary policy frameworks to be developed, to accommodate vehicle assembly,” added Schaefer.

Thomas Schaefer is also the President of the Association of African Automobile Manufacturers and stated in his capacity as the President that he believed that it was important that a Pan African Auto pact be developed to promote and grow a connected Auto Industry in Africa.

“Africa’s time is now and with good alignment between the African countries with automotive aspirations we can create intra African trade and a Win-Win situation for all,” concluded Schaefer.

Journalists Must Be Respected – Osita Biose … As Ikeogwu, Ochei, Oyowe, Gbemudu Ask Government To Stop Impunity Against Practitioners

-By: Patrick Ochei:

The Delta State Capital Territory, Asaba, was today, August 30th, 2018, agog as journalists representing different media houses filed out in their numbers to protest against what they termed incessant harassment of journalists in line with the national executive council’s demand.

During the protest which took off at the Ministry of Information’s secretariat along Summit Road, a former Chairman Emeritus of the Delta State Council of NUJ, Comrade Osita Biose was on hand and duly addressed members of the Union.

Biose who maintained that journalists must be respected in view of their constitutional responsibility of disseminating information and setting agenda for society, called on government at all levels to protect these rights of Practitioners.

He affirmed that no matter the provocation, no authority or highly placed individual has a right to arrest, detain or violently attack a journalist without first exploring the options of mediation, dialogue or redress through the court.

The highly revered unionist, however advised journalists to equally carry themselves with respect and do their job with utmost diligence, adding that the politicians who sometimes use them to achieve their personal results didn’t attend better schools than them.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of NUJ in the state, Comrade Michael Ikeogwu gave a stern warning to the federal government to stop impunity against journalists.

Ikeogwu posited that media Practitioners cannot continue to be intimidated, molested and detained while doing their job.

He however, called on security agencies and other members of society who indulge in maltreating and harassing journalists to desist forthwith or have the Union to contend with.

In his submission, the Vice Chairman of the State Council, Comrade Patrick Ochei averred that the Nigerian constitution guarantees the freedom of press and as such, the government must seek to protect Practitioners from harm’s way.

He gave instances with the arrest and detention of a colleague in Delta, Prince Daniel Ekiugbo by the DSS for several months; as well as the detention of the Bayelsa based journalist, Jones Abiri for two years at the DSS custody, maintaining that another horrific case at hand was the demolition of the Fresh FM station at Ibadan in Oyo State.

Moreover, while the Secretary of the Council, Comrade Churchill Oyowe believes that the freedom of the press is just a lip service assurance, the Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Comrade Patricia Gbemudu said that enough is enough of the injustices meted out to journalists who are indeed members of the fourth estate of the realm.

They both demand that the government of the day should not take Nigerians back to the draconian days, but should respect and synergize with journalists in the interest of progress and development of the nation.

It was a worthwhile venture as members of the noble profession had a field day, expressing their grievances and calling on the public to join forces with the NUJ to fight the injustices against journalists.

While journalists in Delta protested, the same simultaneously went on nationwide to collectively press home these demands that were anchored on solidarity.

Delta @ 27: Bashorun Askia Greets Gov. Okowa, Deltans ***Assures Better Deals For Deltans, Appeals For Peaceful Co-existence

As Deltans at home and in the Diaspora celebrate the 27th Anniversary of the creation of Delta State, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bashorun (Hon.) Askia Ogieh JP, says the state has recorded more gains than loses since its creation on August 27, 1991.

The Executive Director (Finance and Administration) at the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), who lauded Governor Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa for ensuring sustainable peace and development across the three senatorial districts in the state, explained that these strides had led to the growing support of all Deltans for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Bashorun Askia, who promised better deals for Deltans also urged them not to relent in their total support to the administration of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa so as to enjoy more dividends of democracy in the years ahead.

According to him, “We have recorded a lot of achievement in terms of political and socio-economic transformation in the greater part of the years since the state’s creation, spanning from the visionary governance of Chief James Onanefe Ibori who set down the development template and platform for the transformation of this state till date.

“Today, Delta State is tagged as one of the fastest growing states amongst the comity of states in the country due to the sustained landmark development feat of successive PDP led administrations which have taken Delta state to both national and international limelight.”

He therefore appealed to Deltans to remain steadfast in their support of the people oriented government policies and initiatives of incumbent Governor Ifeanyi Okowa by maintaining the existing ethnic peace and harmony in the state to attract more investors and development to the state.

“What the people of Delta state crave for now is sustainable peace to fast-track the development process being driven by His Excellency Governor Ifeanyi Okowa through job and wealth creation, agricultural reforms, road infrastructure, urban-rural transformaion, peace building as well as education and health for all Deltans.

“The successful hosting of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Senior Athletics Championships in Asaba from August 1-5 2018, has further confirmed beyond all doubts that Delta State is indeed a home of peace, security and hospitality.

“Deltans are happy today because they elected a God-fearing and humble man with the Midas touch, whose only goal is to improve on the lives of the people by delivering on his electoral pledges. That is also why they have vowed to re-elect him for a second time because the projects and programmes of the governor were campaigning for him ahead of the 2019 general elections”, Bashorun Askia confirmed.

IMPUNITY AGAINST JOURNALISTS: NUJ TO PROTEST AUGUST 30

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has declared August 30, 2018 a national day of protest against what it described as “impunity against the Nigerian journalists.”

Shuaibu Usman Leman, the NUJ National Secretary, in a statement on Monday in Abuja, directed all the states and FCT councils of the Union to mobilise the members for the protest.

Mr Leman directed the councils to stage protests within their respective press centres.

He said the protest could also be organised in selected media organisations, urging the state councils to also ensure full media coverage of the event.

“We appeal that you all make adequate mobilisation to ensure that members attend and participate fully. Speeches should be made by stakeholders and where applicable, mention instances of such attacks and breeches”, he stated.

The Secretary said that councils should intimate the state governments of the planned protest, pointing out that the Union’s National Secretariat had sent a letter to the Presidency regarding the plan.
