Zulum: A Beacon Of Hope To Borno’s Less Privileged People

By Gbenga Akingbule

Born without a silver spoon and struggled through hardwork, perseverance  and unwavering desire to succeed,  Borno State Governor,  Prof Babagana Zulum has since become a household name especially amongst the less privileged people in the state .

Prof. Zulum is always quick  to share stories  about his humble beginning amongst the high and mighty,  a gesture observers view as rare display of humility amongst Nigeria’s political elites

Since his assumption of office in 2019, Prof Zulum has never failed to consistently associated with the less privileged, his former constituency where he was schooled in the difficult economic hardship bedeveling many Nigerian less privileged people.

Driven by compassion and his  genuine concern to assist the common people, Prof Zulum had on different occasion while on  visit to the hinterland of the state, ordered for the immediate halting of his motorcade just to  assist locals walking long distance by giving them a ride on his convoy and also give them cash support.

Zulum passion to liberate his people from the shackles of poverty and education backwardness has led to rise in budgetary provisions and fund releases for the education sector and key ministries that are aimed at empowering the common people.

For the 2024 budget,  the Ministry of Education was  allocated  the sum of N39 billion to carry out its activities- this effort , amongst others , has removed over a million out-of -school children off the streets of Borno and returned them to the classrooms where their future are being positively molded to become responsible and productive members of the society.

“Out of 1.8 million out-of-school children in 2021, we have taken measures to reduce the number to less than 800. We’re still working assiduously to bring down the number,”  Commissioner of Education,  Science , Technology  and Innovation,  Engineer  Lawan Abba Wakilbe said

No doubt, the more than a decade long  insurgency in Borno State had led many children and their parents to flee trouble areas,  thereby obstructing their education where massive destruction to education facilities across the state was evident .

At  a recent function during a public  lecture  held at University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID ) which form part activities to mark the exit of the former Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Prof. Aliyu Shugaba  after completing his 5 year tenure,  Prof Zulum didn’t mince words when he charged the sea of erudite scholars  present at  the occasion, majority of whom are indigenes of Borno State to think outside the box and collaborate to use education as tool for liberating the people of the state .

Zulum who was full of emotion, apparently on a quick trip down his memory lane, revealed how he battled through plethoras of obstacles in his unquenchable quest to gain quality education that has since transformed his life to become a professor of  soil and water engineering and currently serving his second term as governor of Borno state.

He said: “Coming from my background,  I know how I  suffered , where we do not have competent teachers to teach us in our primary and secondary school.  I never thought I would be a professor, because both of my parents were not educated,  nobody ever told me to do my assignment while in primary school, I was on my own.”

It was therefore not surprising when Governor Zulum recently released the sum of N4.8 billion as scholarship award to 524  postgraduate students  from the state , including orphans and less privileged persons.

The  scholarship  award according to the governor is meant for foriegn and local postgraduate students in Science, Technology,  Engineering and Mathematics ( STEM)

In his usual touch of humanity and compassion towards the the less privileged irrespective of ethnicity, tribe or religion governor Zulum during an early morning visit to a school in Maiduguri,  the state capital had gifted a woman form the South East part of the country- a teacher in the  school with the sum of N100,000 cash for always  showing up eally to her duty post. This announced the governor as a rewarder of not only the less privileged without demarcation of ethnic and religious lines but a staunch believer in hard work and dedicated service.

Also , recently,  during a visit to launch grains given to the state by Federal Government , Prof Zulum, shortly after the occasion went towards the direction of the local guard on duty at the premises and immediately ordered that the sum of N500,000 be given to him – an amount that is more than his 12 month salary.

The 80 year Chadian local guard who had lived in Nigeria for over four decades and has over 20 Children was stunned by the governor’s gesture, he could not hide his feeling but continued to shout the praises of God and that of the governor, stating that the gift would go a long way in ameliorating his financial challenges.

Furthermore, 63 year old Cecelia Joseph, a widow and mother of six children who  was part of the one hundred thousand households that benefited from massive food support scheme carried out by the Borno State Governor, had praises for Zulum who had established the food  support to ameliorate economic hardship being experienced by many vulnerable families across the state, including the likes of Cecilia whose husband, a commercial taxi driver was gruesomely murdered by suspected Boko Haram terrorists over ten years ago.

Cecilia since the demise of her husband,  had continue to feed from hand to mouth  with her six children. Though the blood of her husband was shed in Borno but the allure of the state added to the fact that she had no one ready to lessen her burden from elsewhere had kept her in Borno State. She said that Governor Zulum is the first to have reached out to her with any form of assistance- through the food support, noting that “this will assist me and my six children immensely.”

Prof Zulum had ordered that the food support should  be given to all vulnerable residents irrespective of  tribe , religion and political affiliations hence paving the way for Cecilia who hails from faraway  Osun State, a devoted Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) member as well as other beneficiaries who are not indigenes of the state .

” I’m so grateful to Governor Zulum for wiping away my tears with this food support. But I would appreciate more support from the governor and other well meaning citizens  for the education on my children.  ”  Cecelia who currently lives in a rented accommodation on the outskirts of Maiduguri , the state capital said .

Governor Zulum had revealed during one of the many food distribution in  the state that:  “We have never distinguish between Christians and Muslims in our food distribution.  What we’re doing is not partisan either, it’s not based on ethnicity or religion ; we advised the community to select one hundred thousand most valuable and bottom poor and this will go a long way in ameliorating the suffering of the masses ”

While warehouses were being looted across the country during  the # EndSARS protests,  residents of Borno state were full of gratitude to Governor Zulum for always coming to their aid with his unprecedented distribution of food , cash and clothing to assist the less privileged.

Following the release of N2 billion intervention by the President Bola Tinubu  led Federal government to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal Prof. Zulum had announced raising the number of households being targeted for palliatives from 300,000 to 400,000 households.

Each household according to the Governor,  will be made up of six family members and  multiplied by 400,000 which, by implication, moves Zulum’s new target to two million and four hundred thousand  individuals.

“Governor Zulum has continued to stand in the gap for many of the less privileged people in Borno state ”  Umar Ali, one of those that recently benefited from the food support scheme established by the governor.

Definitely Zulum, has become a beacon of hope for the less privileged people of Borno State.

The General Overseer of the Omega Church Worldwide, the esteemed Apostle Johnson Suleiman has, again on Friday, declared his support for the candidature of Dr Azemhe Azena of the NNPP, in the incoming gubernatorial polls in Edo state.

The renowned Clergyman and Televangelist was speaking at the Church headquarters in Auchi when the youthful Governorship candidate came with members of his campaign council to visit with him.

Apostle Suleiman, who used the occasion to pray for Dr Azemhe Azena and his team for Success and protection as they transverse the length and breadth of Edo state in this campaign season, also promised to pray for them again a month to the election proper.

In his response, Dr Azemhe Azena thanked his spiritual Father, Apostle Johnson Suleiman for blessing them even as Hon Edith Isokpan, the Deputy Governorship Candidate, presented a gift to the respected Clergyman on behalf of the campaign council.

Edo NNPP Suspends Odiase, Others For Anti-Party Activities

By Jasper Akhimien

The Edo Central Vice Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, Hon Fidelis Odiase and Patrick Alikali, a leader in the party have been suspended indefinitely for anti-Party activities by the Edo State Chairman, Mr Fred Uwangue, after a long meeting with the state leaders of the Party.

In a letter signed by the State secretary of the Party, Mr F Okodolor and made available to the Press, the erring leaders were suspended for “Anti-Party activities, insubordination and actions capable of bringing the Party into disrepute among others”

It should be noted that the suspended leaders of the Party, who were alleged to have been campaigning for the opposition on online platforms, have been at the centre of a purported declaration of support for the opposition by the Edo Centre arm of the Party, recently.

This, according to the chairman, threatened to cause disaffection within the party but thanks to the timely intervention of the state Party Exco.

DR AZEMHE AZENA AND THE NNPP: FRESH AIR IN THE ATMOSPHERE (1)

By Austen Akhagbeme

Since Nigeria’s return to majoritarian rule in 1999, so much has happened in the area of organic party formation and our leadership recruitment process in the build-up to general elections, and subsequent emerging democratic administrations and their political actors.

In most cases, these Politicians and their Political parties have had their fair share of opportunities to demonstrate their professed manifestos and vision for the nation. More often than not, they have failed us in such a way that only a positive alternative can help to rekindle hope for the vast majority of disappointed citizens.

Back home in Edo State, many of us have been living witnesses to several administrative tenures as they performed, underperformed, raised our hopes and dashed them commensurately, to the consternation of all.

Edo State has been left as a hopeless victim of the fight between political Godfathers and their recalcitrant godsons on the one hand, and that of a damaging vendetta of incumbency and its tributaries, on the other.

Today, the state lies prostrate, ravaged by flood, bad roads, uncompleted and promised white elephant projects, a dangerous debt burden, showmanship in education policy, brazen land-grabbing initiative, insecurity and total abandonment of the Agric sector where we have a high comparative advantage over sister states in the federation.

It is against this backdrop that the emergence of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, in the Edo political scenery and its homeboy candidate, Dr Azemhe Azena, a well-known and garlanded Philanthropist, must be given the pride of place in our bid to rescue the state from the strangulating hands of political Godfathers and their vicious cronies.

The New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, is a Party that prides itself in its clarity of vision, as enshrined in its robust manifesto. Its slogan, “Education for all,” is an innate policy gesture that Edo State needs, to rejig and breathe life into our feigned motion and notion of populism in our education sector, which has been used over the years as a conduit pipe to syphon state resources to private pockets and that of “foreign” contractors.

As an Educationist, Dr Azemhe Azena is more than equal to the task of bringing life into the education sector in Edo State. For example, he has been shouting in several fora to those who care to hear, that the State University at Ekpoma, needs urgent attention. The lecturers and other Staff need to smile again, moreso the students.

Above all, Edo State needs a change of drivers and the cocoons from where they emerge, to enable dispassionate, altruistic and new leaders who weren’t hatched by diseased political mother hens and Shylock Godfathers, to take over the rein of political leadership in the state and take us to the promised land. Dr Azemhe Azena of the NNPP, is top on the list of these emerging new leaders.

FG Promises to Translate Youth Expectations to Actionable Policies, Tangible Change

The Federal Government has called on the nation’s youth to come out with their expectations, promising commitment to translating their expectations into actionable policies and initiatives that drive tangible change.

The promise was made on Thursday in Abuja by the Minister of Youth Development, Dr. Jamila Bio Ibrahim at the Nigeria Youth Consultative Forum on the ‘Summit Of The Future (SOTF), a collaborative effort by the Interagency Youth Group of the United
Nations, the Network of Youth for Sustainable Initiatives and the Ministry of Youth Development,

The Minister said: “Today is not just another morning; it’s the dawn of a new era for our nation. The Summit of the Future hinges on this very room, on the power of your ideas. Today, we join hands to chart a course for
a sustainable, prosperous Nigeria led by the brilliant visions of its most vital
resource: its youth!”

She noted that the forum was more than a mere meeting, but “represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reshape and invigorate our multilateral system, addressing the challenges we face today and those on the horizon. Together, we aim to strengthen global governance and accelerate the implementation of commitments we have made, particularly those outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

“Understanding the Present, Shaping the Future. The world’s landscape is rapidly evolving from climate change and digital
transformation to economic uncertainty and social justice. Our young people are at
the forefront of driving change. In Nigeria, over 60% of our population is under the
age of 25, making the youth our most valuable asset.

“Reflecting on Your Expectations. This forum is dedicated to capturing your views and expectations. What do you
envision for Nigeria? What are the pressing issues you face? How can we
collectively address these challenges to create a future where every young Nigerian
can flourish?

“Your feedback will shape our contributions to the upcoming UN Summit of the
Future, ensuring that Nigeria’s youth are heard and instrumental in the global
discourse on sustainable development. We are committed to translating your
expectations into actionable policies and initiatives that drive tangible change.”

Ibrahim noted that: “The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) offer a blueprint for a better world, but achieving these goals requires more than just governmental effort; it demands the active participation of every citizen, especially our youth. The journey towards these goals is collective, and your role as a young leader cannot be overstated.

“As we delve into today’s discussions, let us focus on how we can collaboratively
tackle issues such as quality education, decent work, climate action, gender
equality, and peace and justice. Let us explore innovative solutions and sustainable
practices that can be scaled and replicated. Let us commit to actions that are not
only visionary but also practical and inclusive.”

She admitted that: “Nigeria’s challenges are complex, but they are not insurmountable. By harnessing the power of technology, fostering entrepreneurship, and championing education and skills development, we can create a vibrant ecosystem where young Nigerians
can thrive. We must also prioritize inclusivity, ensuring that our initiatives benefit every segment of society, including marginalized and vulnerable groups.”

She appealed that: “Today, I urge you to be bold in your ideas, fearless in your advocacy, and relentless in your pursuit of a better future. This forum allows your voices to resonate and your solutions to take shape.”

The Minister called on the youth to forget yesterday’s blueprints, noting that: “Nigeria’s future is being built today! This
gathering isn’t about listening– it’s about co-creating. We need your fresh
perspectives, the grit you bring to every challenge, and the game-changing ideas
that only young minds can conjure. Together, let’s weave a future that’s resilient, inclusive, and sustainable– a Nigeria that thrives on the boundless potential of its youth.”

The United Nations Resident Coordinator, Mohamed Fall explained that the Forum was to plan ahead for the Summit of the Future in September 2024 in New York.

Fall, who was represented by the Country’s Representative of World Health Organisation, Walter Mulombo, noted that: “In a moment of growing mistrust, in which outdated structures no longer reflect today’s political and economic realities, the Summit is a chance to get back on track and re-commit to a multilateralism that delivers for everyone, everywhere.”

He explained that the Summit of the Future will build on the 2023 SDG Summit, stressing that agreements to improve global cooperation arrangements will, in turn, enable us to deliver on the existing commitments and turbocharge the 2030 Agenda.

He revealed that: “The main outcome of the Summit will be an inter-governmentally agreed and action-oriented Pact for the Future. The Pact will have five chapters: 1) sustainable development and financing for development, 2) international peace and security, 3) science, technology and innovation and digital cooperation, 4) youth and future generations, and 5) transforming global governance. Human rights, empowerment of women and girls and poverty eradication will be cross-cutting.”

He said: “The UN System in Nigeria is strongly behind the Nigerian youth. We believe in you. We trust in your innovative ideas and positive energies to accelerate the achievement of SDGs and drive transformative change in Nigeria.

“We count on you for continuous support in disseminating, explaining and building support for the Summit and helping us sustain the momentum for the major changes our multilateral system needs. Your networks and energies will be essential to the Summit’s success.”

On his part, the Country Representative of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Dr Gifty Addico said: “Young people are the most important and valuable resource of the nation and strategic investment in their education, health, security, and overall development carries the potential for demographic dividends.”

Addico, who was represented by the Deputy Representative, Mr. Koessan Kuawu noted that: “The need for effective multilateral solutions to address the array of challenges ranging from climate change and economic instability to technological disruption and social inequalities is now more urgent than ever.”

He noted that: “This event would provide a platform for young people to discuss and collaborate towards addressing priorities of young Nigerians for the United Nations Summit of the Future in September.
As we delve deep into today’s deliberations, let’s reaffirm our collective resolve: Every voice is invaluable. Every dream holds weight. Every youth deserves an opportunity.

“Here’s to forging a future that acknowledges, celebrates, and nurtures every young individual’s aspiration. The UN Interagency group on Youth steadfastly stands with you, ready to champion this cause.”

He said: “Our operatives were strategically positioned due to the tenacity of the operation large quantities of already siphoned crude oil were loaded inside locally fabricated cooking ovens in readiness for refining into Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) while some had been refined into DPK and AGO both stored in GP Tanks, Cellophane bags and many sacks”

PIA Inadequate in Addressing Challenges of N’Delta Region, Says Group

The Petroleum Industry Act (2021) has been observed as inadequate in providing solutions to the ecological and environmental challenges of the Niger Delta region.

This was observed by stakeholders at the Third Niger Delta Socio-Ecological Alternatives Convergence (NDAC), organised by the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF) in Abuja on Wednesday.

Highlighting the recent approved Niger Delta alternative manifesto for socio ecological justice, Mr. Ken Henshaw noted that while oil has been extracted from the region for over 64 years, the people in the area have been subjected to poverty, less developed and remained more unsecured.

He said the communities in the area that have borne the brunt of oil extraction and Nigeria’s oil economy for over six decades deserve urgent and immediate attention.

He however regretted that they are made to pay for offences not committed just to deny them the right of benefit from the 3 percent as provided by PIA.

Henshaw, who is the Executive Director, We The People, said: “We noted that the PIA is inadequate in addressing the challenges of our region. In parywe not the provisions on community responsibility for protecting oil infrastructures which effectively criminalises our people, provisions on gas flaring which effectively permits the practice, provisions on establishing the host communities funds which gives primacy to oil companies and fails to capture the interest and concerns of our communities”.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Executive Director of HOMEF, Dr. Nnimmo Bassey, noted that the Niger Delta is an undeniable sacrificial zone whose degraded situation must be realigned for the wellbeing of the people and the environment.

He decried that the region has been placed on a bloody slab and visited with unrelenting abuse by the forces of extractivism, internal colonialism and dispossession, stressing that “It has been recklessly exploited right from the time of slavery to the time of colonial monopolies and current realities where it is raped for the sake of keeping a waning petroleum civilization on life support”.

Bassey explained that the programme does not only highlight the huge socio-ecological challenges of the region but also proposes very clear pathways out of the quagmire.

He said “the convergence notes the extreme negative impacts of oil and gas exploitation in the region as well as the massive deforestation and diverse erosion of both the land and the coastlines.

“We note that while the region is made up of a complex ecosystem of streams, rivers, creeks and the sea, potable water is a rarity due to incessant oil spills and the dumping of hazardous industrial wastes into both surface and ground water”.

Speaking further, the HOMEF Executive Director stated that the manifesto foregrounded the struggle against the reckless pattern of crooked divestment schemed and allegedly promoted by the international oil companies (IOCs).

He said: “The plans by the international oil companies to sell off their onshore fields to domestic oil companies and either leave Nigeria or move into deep offshore locations has been roundly condemned as a ploy to escape responsibility and accountability for close to 70 years of unbelievably horrendous pollution of the territory through oil spills, hazardous produced water, toxic wastes and gas flaring”.

He however, urged the National Assembly to act on the matter of existential consequences for the people and the territory, saying that the communities cannot afford to be left stranded in the toxic brew bequeathed to them by the oil companies.

The stakeholders also called for the remediation and restoration of all impacted territories and for payment of reparations for the damage suffered in past years.

According to Bassey, “We should point out here that even the first oil wells drilled, exploited from the 1950s and abandoned in the 1970s, are still polluting the environment because there has not been a proper abandonment and decommissioning process”.

Chairman of the convergence, King Bubaraye Dakolo, noted the need for collective voices for changes in the region. He said “We must have our environment restored. The country has benefited hugely from the resources gotten from the Niger Delta but the region have not felt the positive of the benefits of the natural resources.”

He described the PIA as an anti-people law brought against the Niger Deltans. “A law that criminalises the host producing communities, we are going to ensure the right thing is done, they should clean and restore the environment before divesting”, Dakolo added.

ECOWAS Lightens Gambia Community with Solar Power

A wave of excitement filled the air in Mamud Fana South, Gambia, as residents celebrated a new era of clean and reliable electricity with the commissioning of 77 Solar Home Systems (SHSs).

This life-changing project, implemented by UNIQUE ENERGY, was made possible with the financial support of the ECOWAS Commission through the ECOWAS Special Intervention Fund (ESIF), implemented by ECREEE.

For years, residents of Mamud Fana have struggled with limited access to electricity. This often meant evenings spent in darkness, limited opportunities for education and a struggle to power basic appliances.

Now, the project lights up Mamud Fana South, bringing solar energy to over 1,000 residents. Each household has been equipped with a solar panel, battery storage, inverter, sockets, and lighting bulbs. This new energy source will allow them to power their homes, use appliances, and potentially develop small businesses.

The installations were commissioned on Saturday, June 15th, 2024, in the presence of Mr. Francis Sempore, ECREEE’s Executive Director, Mr. Emmanuel Correa, Representative of The Gambia’s Ministry of Petroleum and Energy and Mr. Njaga Ceesay, Business Development Manager at UNIQUE ENERGY.

The project demonstrates the positive impact that renewable energy solutions can have on rural communities across West Africa.

Marwa Explains Why Assets of Barons, Traffickers Are Targeted in Ongoing Drug War

Chairman/Chief Executive of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd) has justified the decision of the anti-narcotics body to go after the assets of drug barons and traffickers as part of ongoing offensive action against illicit drugs.

Marwa, explained the reason the action to go after assets of drug barons was taken at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday to kick off a week-long activities to celebrate the 2024 International Day Against Drugs and Illicit Trafficking, which NDLEA organized in conjunction with other stakeholders like the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

Marwa said: “Permit me to share with you that our offensive action against drug cartels and traffickers, launched in January 2021, has to date continued to yield the desired result with the arrests and prosecutions of several barons. As you are all aware, two serial traffickers got life imprisonment in court in April. Our prosecution efforts have continued to achieve successes in courts given the painstaking investigations and diligence in the prosecution of cases. Our water tight case preparations are unassailable. This has been further strengthened with our forfeiture regime with the passage of Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA 2022).

“Apart from conviction, the assets of the convicts used as instrumentality of the crime or the proceeds derived from the crime would be forfeited to the federal government. Indeed, a civil action in rem could be maintained against assets reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime in which case the burden of proving the licit origin of the asset would be on the defendant who claims ownership of the asset. This diligent and painstaking preparation of investigations and prosecutions explains the success of the high conviction rate.”

Marwa who was represented by the agency secretary, Mr. Shadrach Haruna on the drug demand reduction efforts of the NDLEA, said the flagship programme, war against drug abuse (WADA) built on ‘the whole of society approach’ to preventive action against drug abuse has been a tremendous success as an effective tool of advocacy for social action and an awareness-driven vehicle for public engagement and collaboration against illicit trafficking and abuse, which he said aligns with the theme for the 2024 world drug day, WDD.

He explained that the world drug day, observed on June 26 every year, “is an important day for the global community, and an occasion during which current efforts against illicit drug problems are given policy direction for the next 12 months.”

He added that the theme for this year: “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention”, emphasises the importance of preventing people from falling into the danger of experimenting with illicit drugs and subsequently falling into the trap of dependence on psychoactive substances.

He noted that: “Prevention is an important aspect of the effort to curb the menace of abuse of illicit drugs in society. At NDLEA, prevention, as ably anchored in our War Against Drug Abuse (WADA), social advocacy programme is a priority area for us. Within our modest means and with the support of the Federal Government and our various stakeholders, we have invested in prevention by various means over the past three years as part of the reforms being undertaken in the agency.”

He gave the breakdown of the weeklong activities to include: Juma’at Service at the National Mosque in Abuja on Friday, Walk Against Drugs in collaboration with MTN and other stakeholders on Saturday, Thanksgiving Church Service at the National Christian Centre on Sunday, among others.

He expressed gratitude to the federal and state governments for the support given to the agency in various ways in the onslaught against drug traffickers.

He said: “The UNODC has been a strong support for us as well as our foreign partners, including the US-Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), the British Border Force, National Crime Agency (NCA) of United Kingdom, as well as our stakeholders like Nigerian Armed Forces, the Customs, Police, Immigration, NAFDAC, NFIU, NACA, FRSC and Civil Defence, among others. And importantly, our media friends. That you are here today is a testament to the support you have given to us these past three years. I cannot help but thank you and the media you represent.”

In his remarks, UNODC Country Deputy Representative, Mr. Danilo Campisi on his part, called on government at all levels and other stakeholders in Nigeria to invest in drug use preventive measures to avoid a 40% rise in the population of drug users in the country especially the youth population.
According to him, “projections show that by 2030, there will be a 40% increase in the use of drugs in Africa, based on the population of young people. This is extremely concerning, if we consider that 2030 is only six years away.

He said: “We are all familiar with the saying: “prevention is better than cure” and considering the data and projections, it has become even more critical for Nigeria to invest heavily in drug use preventive measures. I do not think it would be an exaggeration to describe this as a national emergency. If the country is to take on the challenge of this projected increase in drug use, it is imperative that it adopts scientific evidence-based approaches that prioritise prevention and treatment.”

He said UNODC has worked with the “Government of Nigeria to adapt and implement evidence-based prevention measures which include the highly successful UNPLUGGED, a school-based Drug Prevention Programme implemented together with the Federal Ministry of Education, in 110 Unity Schools and in a few states in the country, notably Kebbi, Bayelsa and recently, Kaduna, on the initiative of the State Governments in these States.”

Obi Patrick Isioma Goodluck Onyeobi: Unfolding A Unicorn

By Monday Uwagwu

Medieval-era European write, William Shakespeare (real name Francis Bacon), it was who held that there exists in humanity a rare breed of men he classified as natural leaders. He also held that they rare are as scarce as the initimitable unicorn.
And how true he remains, in relation to his submission.
In contemporary Africa, particularly for climes that underwent the harrowing experience of colonialism and its evil effects, it is difficult to find people who, inspite of the overbearing influence of their colonial vestiges, are able to hold, fast and firm, to the vital essences of their rich indigenous culture. One such person is Obi Patrick Isioma Onyeobi, Iyase of Asaba, and, until his recent death, Diokpa (village head) of Idumuojei village, Umuezei Quarters, Asaba.
Onyeobi, in spite of his long practical exposure to western style education, civil service and the like, remained a staunch follower of the rich traditions and customs of his people of Asaba, now seat of Delta State, where he held various traditional titles as Ihonor of Asaba, Iyase of Asaba, an Olinzele and member of Asagba-In-Council, an Obi as well as Diokpa (village head) of Idumuojei village, Umuezei quarters, Asaba.

Born on August 7, 1933 in Asaba without the proverbial silver spoon in his mouth, Obi Onyeobi, though dint of providence, honest hard work and resilience, rose from an ordinary civil servant on Grade Level 08, to become not only Permanent Secretary, but also the Head of Service (HOS) and Secretary to State Government (SSG), of the defunct Bendel State (now Delta and Edo states).
Onyeobi attended Government School, Asaba, for his basic (primary) education, 1940 – 1946, and Government College, Ibadan, for his secondary education (1947 – 1952). He later attended the prestigious University College (now University of Ibadan) where he earned the Bachelor’s Degree in Modern History, between 1954 and 1959.

His working career depicts a steady, if not meteoric, rise from the lowest rung of the career ladder to its echelon, thanks to his uncommon diligence and ceaseless positive self-application.

He was employed into the civil service of the now defunct Western Region in 1952, but relocated to Midwest Region in 1963, following the activation, that year, of the result of the plebiscite of the minority ethnic groups in the then Western Region for self-determination.

It is said that even on the darkest of nights, the experienced teeth can still identify the inimitable Yellow Yam (the King of yams and crops) by its unique texture and taste. So it was with Onyeobi.

In no time, he rapidly ascended the ladder of the civil service career by dint of honest hard work and uncommon diligence which earned him the enviable position of Permanent Secretary in 1974. He remained in that position, across many ministries, until October 27, 1983, when he was named Head of Service (HOS). Onyeobi held that position for just roughly three months before, like the gold fish without an effective hiding place, his good works set him out for good, on account of which he was elevated to the twin positions of Secretary to State Government (SSG) and Head of Service (HOS), Bendel State, now defunct. He meritoriously held the positions between January 1984 and March 1987, before he retired.
Given his immense reservoir of relevant experiences and his well oiled virtues of diligence, resilience and honest hard work, it was no surprise that, even after formal retirement, the Nigerian state found him worthy and suitable to be appointed into several key public institutions and agencies. He was member, Board of Directors of what was then Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) between January 1989 and April 1990, and Chairman, Nigerian Gas Company, (NGC), a strategic subsidiary of NNPC, between January 1989 and August 1994.

Onyeobi became a Justice of the Peace (JP) on August 26, 1991, and later, chairman of the giant oil palm conglomerate, Presco Plc, between April 1992 and December 31, 2009. Under him, Presco, which is a transnational corporate group, grew its Nigerian portfolio exponentially, with vast holdings in and around Obaretin, Edo State. The firm produces the highly sought Prestige vegetable oils, among other products.

Despite his numerous public engagements, Onyeobi never ever, even for the briefest capsule of time, forgot his roots as an indigene of Asaba, the ancient historic city west of the majestic River Niger.
In fact, so diverse and far-reaching were his contributions to the traditional administration of Asaba that he became a member of Asagba-In-Council and Asagba’s cabinet in 1991. He remained an active member of the council and cabinet until his death earlier this year.
Onyeobi was installed Ihonor of Asaba on February 14, 1987 and held the post until September 14, 1991, when he was elevated to the position and office of Iyase of Asaba, by which appointment he became the Chief Adviser to the throne of Asagba of Asaba on political, social, economic matters and general administration.

Like the giant feet of the tropical African elephant on wet soil, the great contributions of Obi Onyeobi both to the traditional administration of his ancestral Asaba clan and the civil and public services of Nigeria, especially the defunct Bendel State, did not go unnoticed and unrewarded, hence, long before his eventual demise on April 22, 2024, his neckline dripped with earned epaulettes and awards, which came in from sundry credible groups, organisations and institutions.

Onyeobi earned a Certificate of Recognition from Uromi Royal Palace in November 1991; Certificate of Excellence in Public Service by Delta State Government, August 27, 1995; Distinguished Certificate of Merit of the Asaba branch of the University of Ibadan Alumni Association (Nov 1997); Award of Merit by Nwata Nwelinkea Age Grade (Nov. 1999) and Certificate of Honour for Selfless Service to Asaba Community by Chidikeji Age Grade, Asaba, on November 28, 1999.

He also earned the Distinguished Service Award by Falcon, the Premier Club in Asaba, on December 25, 2000; Gold Medal of Honour Award by His Royal Majesty, Obi (Prof) Chike Edozien, Asagba of Asaba (July 7, 2001) and The Pillars of Development Meritorious Service Award by Delta State Government (Nov 28, 2002); Patron, National Commission for Museums and Monuments (May 18, 2003); Fellowship of the College of Education (Technical), Asaba, June 28, 2003; Award of Honour by People Helping People (May 29, 2004); Honourary Award by All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Nov 24, 2009; Distinguished Leadership Award by Association of Philanthropic Management of Nigeria (November 28, 2009); Recognition Award for Financial and Moral Support to the Growth of Asaba Development ,February 7, 2010; Meritorious Service to the Community Award by Anioma Friends (December 27, 2010) and Holder, “Most Distinguished Alumni (MDA) by the University of Ibadan National Alumni Association (August 6, 2011).

Yet, that is not all that Onyeobi, the worthy servant of both God and man, earned in his life of exemplary service to community and even the larger humanity.
For instance, on August 29, 2013, he was awarded the Integrity in Service by the South-South Guild of Grassroot Newspaper Publishers/Editors; Life Time Achievement Award by Niger Delta Wards (Nov 1, 2013); Ani Ahaba Olinzele Chief -of -the Year 2013 by Asaba Post News (December 27, 2013); Award of Excellence by Nigeria Young Professionals Forum (December 20, 2014); Award of Excellence for Agricultural Development by Agricultural Society of Nigeria (November 10, 2015); Award of Excellence by Community Newspaper Publishers Association of Nigeria (December 10, 2015); Merit Award for Excellence in Public Service by Association of Retired Heads of Service and Permanent Secretaries, Delta State, (January 14, 2016);
Life time Achievement Award by the University of Ibadan Alumni Association (June 11, 2016); Appreciation Award by Lions Club International, District 404A I Nigeria (January, 2017) and Letter of Recognition by Delta State Government (October 24, 2017) and Naming of a new secondary school – Isioma Onyeobi College, Asaba- after him, for his exemplary public service.

Obi Onyeobi became an Obi (Red cap chief) of Asaba on November 20, 2019; was installed Diokpa (village head) of Idumuojei Village, Umuezei Quarters, Asaba, (December 15, 2019); Ambassador of Peace Award by Circle News (January 7, 2020); Award of Excellence by Green Media Academy (October 19, 2020) and Award of Life Time Golden Achievement by Proudly Asaba.

Though strictly a traditionalist, Onyeobi was a staunch example of religious tolerance and was guided in all his undertakings and engagements by the wisdom in the ancient wise saying that the only true service to God is the selfless service to man, and that deference to justice, which Plato described as giving each man his due, is critical in building a progressive and safe society.
These two words – justice and service – marked his entire life from cradle to the grave.
To God be the glory.

Truth Alliance Radio Talk Show Tackles Boko Haram Recruitment Strategies

In a continued effort to shed light on and expose the tactics of terrorist groups amid the ongoing fight against Boko Haram in the Northeast, Neem Foundation, a member of the Truth Alliance, sponsored a radio talk show as part of the “Time to Tell the Truth” campaign in Maiduguri.

In a press statement issued on Monday by the Spokesperson of The Truth Alliance, Mr Ahmed Mustapha, the talk show, aired live this Saturday on Peace FM Radio Station (102.5 FM), marking the second instalment of the series, featuring discussions with guest speakers on how the community can participate in the peace-building process.

The week’s guest speakers, Garba Yusuf and Abdullahi Muhammad, both of whom serve as counsellors and researchers at the Neem Foundation, shared insights based on their community engagements and expertise. The discussions were hosted in Hausa by Muhammad Abubakar Askira.

Garba Yusuf highlighted the rise of insurgency, attributing it to parental negligence and unemployment. “During the advent of the menace, you will notice that some parents are showing neglect on their wards without asking where, what, and with whom they are mingling. Besides, the key factor that lures the people is unemployment,” Yusuf stressed. He pointed out that jobless individuals are more susceptible to being recruited into terrorism, as financial incentives can easily sway them. He also emphasised the importance of a good upbringing in preventing such involvement.

Abdullahi Muhammad focused on the targeted recruitment strategies of terrorist groups. “If you consider the tactics terrorist groups use to deceive people to join their ranks, about 60% or 70% of whom fall victim are young people, specifically those between 18 and 30 years of age,” he stated. Muhammad emphasized the critical role of youth in society and the need to engage those lacking focus to prevent their exploitation by insurgents.

Towards the end of the program, an interactive call-in session was featured, with listeners from as far as Fune LGA in Yobe State and Jigawa calling in to commend the discussion and share their perspectives on the topic.

Muhammad Buba from Fune, Yobe State, remarked, “Alhamdulillah, we have started getting peace in our region, and I call on all to participate in the process by supporting the military with information and other things that bring peace.”

Umar from Kwaram, Jigawa State, commended the program and urged the continuation of such initiatives in the region.
Mustapha stressed that The Truth Alliance remains committed to fostering community engagement and promoting peace and stability in the Northeast.

He stated: “The Truth Alliance is committed to unmasking the truth behind violent and extremist groups and empowering communities to resist tyranny and violence. Through education, outreach, and collaboration, the Truth Alliance strives to build a safer, more resilient society for all.

“In a campaign tagged ‘Time to Tell the Truth’, the Truth Alliance has come together to expose the truth behind how violent extremist groups draw young people into their ranks. Their message is simple: These groups manipulate, they deceive, they Control, they kill, they kidnap, they destroy, and their movement as well as ideology is inherently weak.”

Nigeria Leaders Lack the Fear of God – Pastor Temeowei-Ebi

By Harrison Akamule

The Founder and General Overseer of Christ Mission Ministry, Akugbene Community, in Bomadi Local Government Area, Pastor Austin Temeowei-Ebi, has said that Nigeria was suffering today because those at the helm of affairs lacked the fear of God.

Pastor Temeowei-Ebi made the assertion while reflecting on the current hardship the country was faced with.

In his words, “Where we are today in this country is due to the lack of the fear of God. Leaders lack the fear of God. When we talk about fear of God, we are talking about knowing what God wants, and doing it the way God wants it to be done”.

“Leaders should know who made them leaders, the wisdom they need to lead can only come from God, therefore, God must be the central focus of leadership. So leaders should look up to God and practice God’s leadership style so there will be justice, truth, sincerity”. He said

The Clergy noted that the economic and political situation Nigerians have found themselves in was caused by leaders from top to bottom because Leaders and Nigerians failed to realize that it is God alone that allows anyone to be in a leadership position.

He mentioned that the Church has a vital role to play because the wellbeing of the country is the wellbeing of the Church, adding that, Church leaders should always tell the political class and others in leadership positions the truth.

Pastor Temeowei-ebi encouraged all leaders in different positions and Nigerians at large, to be steadfast and imbibe the fear of God to actualize God’s purpose for the betterment of all Nigerians.

FG Orders NSCDC to Take Over Protection of Transmission Lines

The Federal Government has ordered the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to take over the protection of transmission lines and towers across the nation.

The Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunjo-Ojo gave the order on Friday during the passing-out parade of the 2nd batch of mining marshals of NSCDC in Abuja, decrying that: “It is not acceptable for a country to spend billions on power infrastructure for it to be vandalized.”

The Minister while expressing deep concern over the constant vandalism of transmission lines, towers and transformers, described the oft-repeated vandalism of critical national assets as economic sabotage which must be nipped in the bud.

Tunji-Ojo added that: “I will speak with my brother, the Minister of power, the rate of vandalism , the rate of destruction of our critical infrastructure in the sector and a lot of sabotage going on with our transmission lines, our generation points and all the rest has to be looked into.

“It is your job to make sure that no critical asset of government is destroyed and we are ready and I believe NSCDC is up to the task.

“The next time I come here, I want to see my Power Rangers, I mean people that will protect our distribution lines, people that will protect our Gencos people that will protect every power sector. it’s not reasonable, it’s not acceptable for the for a country like Nigeria to spend billions of dollars on power infrastructure all for it to be vandalized no country grows or develops without the power sector so NSCDC it is time for you to play your part.

“In terms of the power sector we will take this sector by sector. I have decided that the solution towards you accomplishing your mandate is sectorization of your responsibility.”

Tunji-Ojo also assured Nigerians that the country would do everything it takes to win the war against illegal miners.

He said: “Today, I can tell you the revenue from the solid mineral sector is not where it used to be, it has improved. The security in terms of our mines has improved and of course Nigeria is a big country therefore, we need to train more, we need to deploy more personnel into making sure that all our mines and all critical assets of Nigeria are well protected.

“We have seen that there is no solution to our problems that Nigerians cannot prefer yes we’ve not yet won the war but we know we will win the war.”

On his part, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake acknowledged that the revenue in the mineral sector has improved after the introduction of NSCDC Mining Marshals.

Alake, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Mary Ogbe, however warned miners to formalise their operations or face the law.

He said that the illegal operations of the miners have continued to cause land degradation.

In his remarks, the Commandant General of NSCDC, Dr Ahmed Audi lamented that the nation’s security especially the mining sector is being threatened by the nefarious activities of illegal miners, bandits, kidnappers, terrorists, among others, noting that this has led to a major setback in the development of the country’s otherwise very lucrative mining sector that is very critical to the country’s socio-economic development.

Audi said: “There is no gainsaying the fact that Nigeria is blessed with abundance of mineral resources which if properly tapped and managed, could significantly boost Nigeria’s revenue base which represents another giant stride towards stabilising the economy.”

He noted that adequate security measures towards strengthening security and safeguarding our collective patrimony needs to be put in place, while insisting that there is need for a robust policy guideline backed by legislation, for a robust regulatory measures to combat and criminalise illegal mining.

The CG explained that this measure will no doubt attract and encourage genuine investors (both indigenous and foreign) to the mining industry.

On the new mining marshals, he said: “I am of the firm believe that this intensive training has sufficiently equipped the participants with the requisite skills and knowledge to discharge their duties diligently and professionally. Let me at this juncture remind today’s graduands of the expectations of Government and to charge you all to maintain a high sense of professionalism, integrity, discipline, civility, humility, and level headedness and to ensure that knowledge gained in the course of the training is effectively utilized to fortify security at all mining sites across the country.

“You are also expected to imbibe the spirit of patriotism, absolute loyalty and to eschew acts or unethical conduct capable of dragging the image of the Corps in the mud as anyone found wanting will be appropriately sanctioned. Furthermore, you are to shun any act of unhealthy rivalry with other Security Agencies but rather regard yourselves as partners in the wheel of progress and development of this great Nation.”

47,000 NSCDC Personnel Deployed Nationwide for Hitch-free Sallah

The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSCDC), Dr. Ahmed Audi has deployed over 47,000 personnel nationwide to provide security coverage and protect all critical national assets and Infrastructure during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

Audi stated this in a meeting held with the top management team of the NSCDC at the National Headquarters in Abuja.

According to him, the mass deployment has become necessary to justify the confidence the citizenry places in the Corps, and the need to live up to expectations by ensuring that every nook and cranny of the country is adequately secured and protected.

The CG also directed all Zonal Commanders and State Commandants to ensure adherence to operational order, standard operating procedure and code of conduct as they work tirelessly to maintain peace and order in their domain, he further ordered that all critical national assets and Infrastructure must be jealously safeguarded while massive arrests should be carried out on Vandals and economic saboteurs.

The NSCDC helmsman explained that the deployment of over 47,000 personnel comprises all Special Forces, CG’s Special Intelligence Squad, Agro Rangers, Mining Marshals, Special Female Squad, SWAT and other specialized units who are to ensure round-the-clock surveillance on CNAI and free movement without any fear or intimidation.

Audi stressed the need for synergy with other security agencies through effective cooperation, collaboration and coordination to combat emerging threats without delay.

“Since no agency has a monopoly of strategy to tackling security challenges; the NSCDC will continue to collaborate with sister security agencies to enhance the nation’s security architecture”.

“It is, therefore necessary for all formations to be on alert and intensify efforts through constant patrols, surveillance and intelligence gathering both on land and the coastal areas even as all black spots are marked red zones.

While extending his felicitation to the Muslim faithful on this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration, Audi also used the opportunity to call on members of the public to be vigilant and be free to report any suspicious movement to the nearest security agency for appropriate action to be taken.

The French Embassy Fund is a programme under the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs designed to help French representations abroad to carry out innovative actions on the ground that have a rapid impact and are highly visible for the benefit of local populations.
The project will be deployed within the next 18 months, through three components: Funding and delivery of micro plants co-designed by and for two universities (UNILAG and Nile University), equipped with adapted machineries to tackle plastic collection, processing and eventually transformation; Funding five to six research projects in innovative solutions with high added value with regards to sustainable development, circular economy, qualitative value chain, gender inclusivity and strong entrepreneurial potential; Boosting capacity building with focus training programmes to support the research projects, scientific exchange between Nigerian and French researchers and mobility programmes at a Higher Education level.

Funded projects are expected to be fully implemented and sustainable by December 2025.

Speaking at the event which held on Thursday night at the French Embassy in Nigeria in Abuja, the Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of France to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Jean Francois Hasperue said: “We are witnessing climate change effects, whether in the form of extreme weather events, rising sea levels, loss of biodiversity or severe droughts. Nigeria is a sad example of this, as it is one of the 10 countries in the world most sensitive to climate change. Climate change is no longer a distant threat, but a present reality, contrary to what the climatoseptics would have us believe.”

He noted that: “These issues are global and we need to find global solutions together as air pollution does not stop at the border nor plastic pollution in the oceans.

“The rise of youth activism is one of the most significant developments in the fight against climate change in my view. All along the events I have seen and met the young people and also the public committed to tackle these issues. We owe it to them to listen to their voices and to provide them with answers that are sometimes incomplete, but also to always leave room for discussion.

“It’s with a great deal of humility that we need to listen to each other and recognize that we can no longer continue to act as we have in the past. Combating climate change and building climate resilience require international collaborative and cross-generational solutions.”

The envoy said: “This means investing in renewable energy, protecting natural ecosystems and developing adaptation strategies to cope with the inevitable impacts of climate change.”

He said the French Embassy Fund entitled “Plastic waste management in Nigerian campuses” project will be deployed within the next 18 months.

He added that at the French Embassy in Nigeria, and as with every event, we are going the extra mile to reach out to researchers, civil society, artists, students and activists to make our events exceptional and to put the experts and professionals in each field at the centre of all discussions.

The envoy revealed that through scholarship programmes, “we support five bachelors students currently attending the “French+Sciences” Sustainable Development short training programme in Montpellier during one month. And today, seven more candidates have been selected as laureates of the France Excellence scholarship programme to continue their studies in Environmental sciences for a two years Master programme.

Money Laundering: Stakeholders Seek Strategies for Nigeria’s Removal from FATF Grey List

Stakeholders on Thursday advocated improved capacity for law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute money laundering and terrorism financing cases in Nigeria.

The participants at the dialogue on strengthening Nigeria’s anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism framework engagement on Nigeria’s FATF delisting, also demanded effective strategies that could lead to the removal of Nigeria from the Financial Action Task Force grey list.

The FATF greylisted Nigeria in February 2023, and the country again failed to scale a review carried out by the global financial intelligence agency at its plenary, in November of the same year.

The participants were drawn from the Ministry of Justice, Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the University of Warwick and the University of Lancaster.

The programme which was held in Abuja, was hosted by the African Centre for Governance, Assets Recovery and Sustainable Development in collaboration with the Global South Dialogue on Economic Crime, the University of Warwick, the University of Lancaster and the Economic and Social Research Council, among others.

An assistant professor at the University of Warwick Law School, Dr. Joy Malala, noted the greylisting of several African countries by the FATF and proposed that “a shared approach to mitigating the risk of listing needed to be documented.”

Malala stated, “So, part of our aim is to do a NEEDS assessment and try to understand the challenges that many of the government agencies face; whether it’s data management, whether it’s interagency collaboration, communication and what they do with that data as well.

‘’We are also interested in many of the judicial actors, trying to understand how the prosecution works, taking these cases forward to the courts, how the courts adjudicate them, and trying to see how police interact with Customs, interact with other agencies, to better understand the needs of Nigeria.

She explained that money laundering is not a nation-specific crime, emphasising its cross-border, transnational nature, adding that a better coalition would, in fact, limit and constrain how illicit finances flow.

‘’It would better constrain how money flows within these networks, these organised crime networks. So, we are hoping to expand it to other countries, but the focus of this project is strictly on Nigeria as a case study,” she clarified.

Also speaking, Dr Nkechi Azinge-Egbiri of the University of Lancaster said the participants at the dialogue who included stakeholders from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission and the Directorate of State Services would rub minds and strategise against the challenges in combating money laundering and terrorism financing.

“We want to ask and find out what the challenges are, to benchmark their capacity, and to see how we can aid in strengthening Nigeria’s capacity to combat money laundering and terrorist financing, which is very crucial and would contribute to Nigeria’s ability to also attain SDG 16, which is about reducing illicit financial flows within the country, and outside the country,” she said.

The Executive Director of the African Centre for Governance, Asset Recovery and Sustainable Development, Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu, said the centre was collaborating with the Federal Government under the International Coordination Review Group, to ensure Nigeria’s delisting from the FATF grey list.

She listed the outstanding issues to include prosecution, investigation, intelligence gathering, and managing data related to terrorism financing cases.

The former NFIU director noted, “Well, today, we are essentially looking at how to improve our systems, whether we’re talking about investigation, prosecution, or in terms of gathering intelligence that will support the investigation.

‘’One of the challenges relates to the investigation of terrorism cases as opposed to any other crime, and also to make sure that when we do that, every law enforcement agency that is involved has the intelligence to do their work, has the capacity to then investigate and then prosecute.’’

ILO Calls on Stakeholders to Double Efforts to End Child Labour

International Labour Organisation (ILO) has called on stakeholders to double their efforts and strengthen their unity to end child labour in Nigeria and the ECOWAS sub-region.

The call was made in a statement on Thursday issued to mark the World Day Against Child Labour and the 25th anniversary of the adoption of ILO Convention No. 182 on the Worst Forms of Child Labour.

In his statement on the day, the Director of ILO Abuja Country Office for Liberia, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Nigeria, and Liaison office for the ECOWAS, Ms Vanessa Phala asked all stakeholders to double their efforts and strengthen their unity to end child labour in Nigeria and the ECOWAS sub-region.

Speaking at the commemorative event held on 12 June 2024 in Akure Ondo State, Phala said: “I call on everyone here today to strengthen our unity in our fight against child labour and forced labour. We must strive to ensure that every child in the world can flourish in a safe and nurturing environment. Let us work together to make a change in the world.”

Funded by the United States Department of Labour through the ILO Action against Child Labour in Agriculture in West Africa (ACLAWA) and Global Accelerator lab (GALAB) projects in Nigeria, the commemoration was attended by over 350 students from 40 schools in Ondo State.

Phala, represented by the ACLAWA Project Manager, Agatha Kolawole, further urged all stakeholders to fulfill their commitments to Convention No. 182. The World Day Against Child Labour, according to her, was meant for the effective implementation of those ILO Conventions, reinvigorated action to end child labour, and universal ratification and implementation of both conventions.

The Director noted the urgency to fully implement these fundamental ILO Conventions is more pressing than ever, as the world and indeed Nigeria, approach the 2025 target set by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG target 8.7) for the elimination of child labour.

“Balancing education and work poses complex challenges, emphasizing the importance of concerted efforts to eradicate child labor and ensure access to quality education for all.” Phala added.

The Controller of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment in Ondo State, Mrs Olanike Mogboruko, urged all stakeholders to remember that every child deserves a childhood free from exploitation and filled with opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive.

She acknowledged that. “Child labour remains a pervasive problem that affects over 160 million children worldwide. These children are often deprived of their basic rights to education, health, and a safe and nurturing environment. We must strengthen our efforts and collaborate across all sectors to create sustainable solutions.”

Representative of the children, Akinwoye Olawale, a student at Sharon Rose College, Okitipupa local government area, called for the enforcement and strengthening of laws and policies that prohibit child labour.

He made reference to Section 2 of the Child’s Rights Act 2023 which states, “A child shall be given such protection and care as is necessary for the well‐being of the child, taking into account the rights and duties of the child’s parents, legal guardians, or other individuals, institutions, services, agencies, organisations or bodies legally responsible for the child.”

The commemoration of the 2024 World Against Child Labour in Nigeria started on 11 June with Akure neighbourhood sensitisation walk by ILO and partners.

One year at the Red chamber: Ned Nwoko , the game changer

By Andy Emephia

Precisely one year in office as Senator representing Delta North Senatorial district in the 10th Nigerian Senate, his has been a game changing foray, a trailblazing one of remarkable might , mirth , and main.

Inaugurated on 13th June 2023, this personality , who represented Aniocha/Oshimili fedral constituency, at the green chambers of the National Assembly , has truly lived up to his billing, literally eclipsing the achievements of his predecssors in that office.

Inaugurated on the 13th of June 2023, this pathfinder, who, twenty years ago , had represented the good people of Aniocha/Oshimili federal constituency , at the green chambers of the National Assembly , has unarguably , surpassed the performance of his predecessors with a landmark 20 bills to his credit , as well as numerous motions dovetailing around the greater good of the downtrodden , not only in Delta North , but the entire natíon at large.

A member of 16 strategic senate committees , among which he is Vice Chairman of the strategic environment committee , he has demonstrated ample capacity in his legislative duties of law making and oversight functions , to the admiration of not only the people of Delta North , but also to the entire members of the 10th Senate.

Highly respected , Senator Prince Chinedum ( Ned Nwoko), the doyen of the Paris club loan refunds that lifted Nigeria from economic depression, the first Nigerian to go to Antarctica and hoist the nation,s flag in the quest for malaria cure, the Chancellor of the first Sports University in Sub Saharan Africa , culture and tourism connoisseur , philanthropist per excellence and lots more , is indeed a pride of Anioma in particular , and Delta in general.

A man of high transparency , Ned, as he is fondly called, had announced that he had attracted a whooping #3.5bn from the 2024 federal budget , for sundry infrastructural projects to Anioma , cutting across roads , schools , markets and so on, in total contrast to the sickening secrecy displayed by politicians in this clime.

SCORECARD lN ONE YEAR.

In November 2023, 250 persons were empowered and given #150,000 each, in a poverty alleviation and wealth creation scheme designed to take the youths and women off the unemployment rung , into self sustaining vocations.

In the works also , is another of such programmes scheduled for the end of June 2024.

Not done , over 1,000 persons , through the federal government’s social investment scheme , are slated to benefit from a #50,000 each Conditional Cash Transfer scheme, to be supervised by the senator,s office.

Senator Ned Nwoko,s desire for the people of Delta North to enjoy uninterrupted electricity through the step down of the Okpai electricity project , has started yielding results with assurances that the step down project , whiwaslong abandoned by successive federal governments, will see the enjoying their God given natural endowment.

Also on his list of achievements within the period under review, is the resuscitation of the Ogwashi uku Dam which was started over 20 years ago when he was the House of Reps member representg Aniocha/Oshimili federal constituency and also abandoned by the federal agency in charge of the project, the federal ministry of water resources . The project,s completion is dear to Nwoko,s heart , as it will bring the agricultural prowess of the surrounding communities to the fore through irrigation as is done across the world.

Senator without border

The release of the family involved in fire arms production at Onicha Olona in Aniocha north , clearly attests to Ned,s knack for seeing beyond to ferret the good out of a bad siruation . For the sheer fact that he met with the military hierarchy at the 63 Brigade of the Nigerian Army to personally plead for the release of the family members involved in this seemingly criminal act of producing fire arms and soliciting for them to be integrated into a process whereby those skilled in manufacturing arms can be integrated into a programme where they can be formally engaged to work with the relevant military hardware production outfits , is a clear manifestation of his uncanny knack to discover talents in any field of human endeavour.

The Okwuama issue: Ned again to the rescue

Unmindful of the fact that he was not a representative of the Okwuama people of Delta Central , Ned played a key and central role in the release of the Ewu kingdom Monarch , HRM Clement lkolo, Urhukpe 1, who was detained by the Military authorities in Abuja , over the March 14, 2024 killing of 17 soldiers on a peace mission to the community . Even the monarch after his release , visited Ned at his Maitama , Abuja residence, where he openly admitted that his release was largely due to Ned,s intervention.

Bills and Motions.

Too numerous to mention what Senator Ned Nwoko has put forward within this one year at the floor of the Senate . But suffice it to say that though they are in the public domain , they range from firearms ownership , diaspora voting , youth empowerment , rent related matters and anti open grazing across states among others.

His legion motions include stoppage of gas flaring , completion of the East/ West Road, total rehabilitation of the Benin Onitsha highway and sundry others too numerous to mention.

Not the least indicative of a man in tow with the urgency of the moment , Ned,s bill for the creation of Anioma state from the present Delta State , clearly speak volumes of his awareness of history.

Conclusion

With the groundswell of hearty approbation and vote of confidence garnered from the youth , women , traditional institutions and the entire people of Anioma, it is as clear as crystal , as chill as the reaches of outer space , that Delta North has struck gold with a worthy repsentative at the red chambers , in Ned.

He said the deployment which would cover all the nooks and crannies of the six (6) Area Councils as well as the city centre, especially sensitive locations, soft targets, black spots and flash points that are prone to criminal activities, is to ensure that residents enjoy a peaceful holiday this season.

The Commandant warned miscreants, vandals and other mischief makers to keep off Critical National Assets and Infrastructure as the Corps will not hesitate to bring the full weight of the law on any one caught or found culpable.

Odumosu also warned against burning of tyres on the road as it affects the integrity of the road and therefore constitutes act of vandalism, anyone caught will be made to face the law.

The Commandant warned miscreants who take advantage of festive seasons to commit acts of vandalism of infrastructures such as street lights, solar panels and batteries to desist from that as the command has men all over the FCT and anyone caught perpetrating such criminal act will face the full weight of the law.

He warned that: “The FCT administration have spent so much to provide good roads and other basic infrastructure for residents of the FCT, we will therefore not tolerate any act that will sabotage the effort of government.”

He also charged Area Commanders and Divisional Officers to deploy massively in their various jurisdiction and to ensure adequate security coverage in all places of interest.

He urged personnel to be committed, vigilant, responsive and resolute in their avowed commitment to ensuring a crime free environment, and a hitch free celebration devoid of security breaches or threats.

“The Corps is committed to ensuring safety of lives and property of residents and the protection of Critical National Assets in the FCT.

“You are to ensure 24 hours protection of all these infrastructures, and the holiday makers in the city. We must show commitment in the discharge of our duties as law enforcers.

“However, there is no room for carelessness or over zealousness while carrying out your duties and the operational order must be followed to ensure professionalism on your part,” he said.

The Commandant has deployed all special forces such as the Armed Squad, Intelligence and under cover officers, Counter Terrorism Unit, Female Strike Force, Special Crack Squad (operation Adaka-su), and Agro Rangers to ensure the maintenance of law and order.

Odumosu assures residents of FCT that the Command will join other sister agencies to provide security at prayer grounds all over the FCT, at motor parks, recreational centres and other places of interest.

The Commandant felicitates with all muslim faithfuls in the FCT as they mark the Eid- El Kabir celebration and pray that Almighty Allah accept their sacrifice.

Proposed Anioma State by Senator Ned Nwoko: History beckons

By Andy Emephia

The conclusion, both unanimous and obvious, for the creation of the long overdue Anioma State, is incontrovertible.

From the spirited efforts of Anioma traditional rulers led by the late Asagba of Asaba, Obi Professor Chike Edozien, to the strident appeal by pan Anioma socio cultural body , the Izu Anioma, to the affirmation by pan lbo socio cultural body , Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the time is indeed ripe.

Taking the gauntlet recently , the ever proactive Senator representing Delta North Senatorial district at the Nigerian Senate, distinguished Senator Prince Chinedum( Ned) Munir Nwoko , made a proposal on the floor of the red chambers , for the creation of Anioma state , to become the sixth ( 6th) State of the south east region, which is the only region among the six geo political regions , that has less states, five to be precise.

Apart from the political imbalance in the distribution of states that is the lot of the south east geo political zone, Senator Ned Nwoko is emphatic that the creation of Anioma state is “urgent and compelling”.

Noting specifically that only the south east , with five states , have 15 Senators , instead of the 18 and above that other regions boast of, Anioma State , with 9 local governments , boasts of huge natural and mineral resources , including crude oil and huge gas reserves in six of her local governments , and as such , qualifies for meeting any laid down criteria , for state creation.

Senator Nwoko added that creation of Anioma state is not just about adding to the number of states in the south east geo political zone , but also about ensuring fair representation and resource allocation for the south east.

Why place Anioma with South east?

The saying that “the truth wears no disguise” , underscores Senator Nwoko,s bold step in this regard . Culturally speaking , the Anioma region has a lot in common with the five south eastern states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo. Apart from sharing similar language and cultural features with the south east states, it is widely acknowledged that their ancestor Ezechime , has clans all over Anioma land , especially Aniocha north.

Even the Aro people domiciled in the south east , are reputed to be descendants of Ezechime , the historical figure associated with the many clans in present day Aniocha North.

Conclusion

Without mincing words , Senator Ned Nwoko , always braving odds where others dare to thread, is on the road to history again.

The creation of Anioma state is a crucial step towards creating justice and equity for the people of the south east.

With the collaborative effort of major stakeholders , and Ned Nwoko at the Senate to drive the process to it’s logical conclusion, the Anioma state dream, with it’s full proof claim of historical and resource allocation neglect , is but a hair,s breath away
And Ned,s name , as always , is primed to be indelibly etched as the undisputed arrow head of a dream soon to come true.

Ebeli Advocates For Local Government Autonomy

By Harrison Akamule

The inability of successive administrations to summon political will to address the autonomy of local government administration has led to the collapse of the local government Councils in Nigeria.

The Executive Director for Good Governance at the Grassroots, Sir Godwin Ebelli, made the assertion at Akugbene Community, Bomadi Local Government Area, of Delta State.

According to Sir Ebelli, Local Government Councils are poorly funded due to the Act establishing Joint Allocations with the State Governments

He pointed out that the leadership recruitment process into local government Councils where elections are not held regularly has caused more harm than good to the masses in the local government areas, adding that even if elections were conducted, the Parties in power would win it all.

He reiterated that the selection of local government Chairmen and Councilors’ was one of the reasons local governments are under-developed, saying that if local government areas which was the third tier of government were deliberately empowered, there would be so much relief for the federal and state governments.

He stated that political Parties should have direct internal democracy for people to choose candidates of their choice so that they can be held accountable and responsible if they fail.

He appealed to the National Assembly to revisit the Act establishing local governmentadministration and do the needful so that rural dwellers can hold local government council administrators accountable if they failed to perform.

Sir Ebelli noted that the overbearing grip of local government Councils by the State Governments has inadvertently affected them and the people from meaningful development and growth.

He said since the federal government does not have direct control of funds going to the states, state governments too should not have direct control of local government funds.

In his words “If local Government Councils are properly funded, and the leadership recruitment process is done within the principles of democracy, mass movement of people from the rural to urban areas for white color jobs would be reduced “.

(POETRY): THE IKENGA IN OLIGBO

By Ben Ijeoma Adigwe Esq.

There was an idol

In the land of Oligbo.

Perfectly crafted,

By ancient craftsmen,

Called the Ikenga.

A perfect work of art,

An antiquity.

The owners sacrificed to it,

Every now and then,

With blood of fowls

Goats and sheep,

And practiced with it

The ancient art of divination.

After a long while,

The owners of this sacred piece

Took stock of their fortunes,

And concluded that

Keeping the idol was

Not economically viable

In this modern world.

So they conspired to sell it off

To collectors of antiquities

For some cool Pounds.

Just then, the idol

Spoke up by divination

Complaining bitterly

That the sacrifices to

It were unsatisfactory;

That he should be appeased

With more sacrifices or else

He would grow angry.

Oblivious of the silent fact

That he was on his way to Europe,

As a collector’s item.

Proving once again that,

Like his likes.

He was a classic idol.

Explanation

The story revolves around an idol called the Ikenga in the land of Oligbo, renowned for itsartistry and antiquity. The idol was worshiped through regular sacrifices and divination practices by its owners. However, over time, the owners assessed their financial situation and deemed the idol economically unbeneficial in the contemporary world. Consequently, they decided to sell the Ikenga to collectors of antiquities for a considerable sum of money. As they were making this decision, the idol, as though speaking by divination, expressed dissatisfaction with the sacrifices offered to it and demanded more, or it would become angry. This outcry by the idol was ironic since it was unaware that it was already being sold to become a mere collector’s item in Europe, once again proving that, like other idols of its kind, the Ikenga was a classic and yet powerless idol.

NNPP Governorship Candidate hails AAU Management

By Austen Akhagbeme

The Edo state Governorship Candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, Dr Azemhe Azena, has expressed gratitude to the management of the state-owned Ambrose Alli University, following the outcome of the emergency meeting of the Senate held yesterday amidst the course registration crisis and the decision taken to extend the time of registration for additional two weeks for the protesting students.

It should be recalled that the students on Thursday morning, embarked on a peaceful protest at the entrance of the school premises while keeping the entrance gate under lock and key, preventing both staff and students from gaining entrance to the school.

In an internal memo released by the Senate of the school and signed by the school’s Acting Registrar, Mr Ambrose E. Odiase, “the Senate also considered the issue of non-registration of courses by some students who paid school fees and participated in examination in the 2022/2023 session and approved that one week be given to them to carry out the course registration formalities through the ICT backend”

The Governorship Candidate, Dr Azemhe Azena who is, however, grateful for the quick resolution of the crisis, had earlier cried out for a peaceful resolution of the brewing crisis yesterday, while calling on the students not to take laws into their own hands as they embarked on a protest against the school management.

ASWAMA buckets scandal: LG staff, two others abscond over allegations of corruption

BY SUNNY A. DAVID

A scandal involving the alleged dIversion of 1,300 sanitary buckets meant for the Anambra State Waste Management Agency (ASWAMA) has rocked Onitsha South Local Government Area, leading to the flee of a local government staff and two others.

Some people had been paddling information that the former Chairman of Onitsha South Local Government Area Chief Emeka Joseph Orji diverted those buckets meant for the residents.

Our correspondent gathered that those who paddled the information had flee the town after discovering that they collected N7millions to discredit the former Chairman of the council.

It was also gathered that among the fleeing persons include a staff of Onitsha South local government council, who is still under investigation by the Police.

The contractor handling the project said the three persons who made allegation were paid the sum of N7 millions by a politican fighting to replace Orji as Transition Committee Chairman.

According to the contractor, when they lost their bid as stakeholders of the All Progressives Grand Alliance APGA in the area to stop the renomination of Orji as one of the mandatory three aspirants for the job, they decided to make wild allegation against him.

However, Onitsha South Media, said those buckets were not diverted but were kept for safety on the mandate of the Contractor Menezes Int. Ltd. headed by the Managing Director and CEO of the firm Chief Sir Edwin Ukaora.

The contractor, Chief Ukora in a statement confirming the safe keeping of the buckets said:
“The attention of Menezes Int. ltd. has been drawn to a video and report alleging that the former Chairman of Onitsha South Local Government Area Chief Emeka Joseph Orji stocked Anambra state government sanitation buckets at his private residence in Onitsha.

“Against this backdrop, the management of Menezes Int Ltd wishes to state as follows.

“That the said allegations are not only false but unfounded as the property in question belongs to the Company.

“That the true position is that Menezes Int Ltd was contracted to supply sanitation buckets to the Anambra State government.

“By the time Anambra Waste Management Agency ASWAMA gave the contract to procure and distribute those sanitation buckets the firm had serious challenges of where to keep those buckets totaling 300 as first batch of the supply and later 1,000 buckets.

”Menezes had no option but to search for space, and it is on record that the company approached warehouses in Onitsha, and they charged her high cost of storage, which the company found too expensive to pay.

”On a second thought, Menezes Int Ltd approached the then Chairmen of Onitsha North and South local government areas, and they accepted to allow the firm to store those buckets under their custody.

“Onitsha North local government area had enough space to store some of the buckets while Onitsha South had no such space hence the Chairman Chief Emeka Joseph Orji offered his residence in Onitsha for the company to store those buckets at no cost at all.

“Consequent upon the above the Board and Management of Menezes Int ltd wish to state categorically that the said buckets is owned by the company and was not diverted by the former Chairman of Onitsha South local government area Chief Emeka Joseph Orji.

“That those buckets still bear the name of the company that supplied them, which is Menezes Int Ltd.

“The management sees those spurious allegations as a calculated attempt by some bunch of paid agents and rabble rousers to dent the image and reputation of Chief Emeka Joseph Orji.

“Meanwhile three suspects are said to be on the run following the intensed investigation over the matter and financial transactions have also been uncovered to the tune of N7 million allegedly paid to the blackmailers to pull Chief Emeka Joseph Orji down politically.

“The Management would make public the three suspects, which includes a staff of Onitsha South local government area who has been facing police interrogation over several allegations of obtaining under false pretenses and arson on public and private properties.

“The Management of Menezes Int Ltd wish to urge the general public to discountenance those reports as they misleading smacks of campaign of calumny targeted at the former Chairman of Onitsha South local government area.”

Azemhe Azena Appeals for calm as AAU students protest, locked up school gate

By Austen Akhagbeme

The Governorship Candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, Dr Azemhe Azena has appealed for calm and peaceful resolution of the brewing crisis, as the students of the state-owned Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma, protests over the school Management’s decision to close registration against many students who could not complete their registration as a result of non-payment of school fees at the stipulated time, despite their entreaties to the school management.

Sources close to the school confirmed that the students became agitated when it was becoming obvious that the management will not listen to their plea and therefore went ahead to lock the entrance gate to the school, locking out both students and staff of the institution this morning.

The Governorship Candidate who spoke in a viral video from his base in Italy where he’s been consulting with Edo indigenes in the diaspora in relation to the upcoming governorship election in Edo state, equally appealed to the management of the school to consider the plight of the students as things are generally tough with them on campus as a result of the prevailing economic conditions in the nation.

Dr Azemhe Azena who is equally a student in the Law faculty of the University said that he has for several times, paid school fees for some indigent students while adding that late registration by many students was not intentional.

“Things are hard and surviving as a student on campus is becoming a Herculean task, the more reason the school management must temper justice with mercy” he said.

The Governorship Candidate, however, appealed to the students not to take laws into their hands no matter the provocation.

Jonathan inaugurates Delta High Court Complex

…As Oborevwori presents 20 SUVs to Judges

Nigeria’s former President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, Tuesday, inaugurated Delta State High Court Complex in Asaba and flagged off the presentation of 20 Toyota Prado Sport Utility Vehicles, SUVs, to Judges in the state at which event he openly lauded the state government for credible performance.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Jonathan commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his primary focus on the infrastructural development of Delta State and his commitment to continuing with projects inherited from previous administrations in the state.

He said: “There are some projects that are very fundamental to the growth and development of the state and we expect anybody who takes over government to continue with them and you are doing exactly that.

“I believe that if you go across the country today, this is one of the best judiciary headquarters in the country and I congratulate the Governor and the judiciary of Delta State for this exemplary project.”

Jonathan also lauded Governor Oborevwori for his prudence in returning unutilised funds of over N500 million to the State treasury when he was Speaker of the State House of Assembly.

He said; “It is not easy for a public officer or even a civil servant to refund money to the government in most cases; it is extremely difficult, but as a Speaker, you were able to do that and that shows that you are somebody of high level of integrity and you can be trusted.

“Please, continue to manage the resources of the state in that manner and use the money in a way that it will affect the people positively.”

The former President urged the people of Delta State to keep supporting the Governor for the overall development of the state, saying; “there are some people who believe that they must bring a government down for the purpose of politics, but when you are struggling to bring a governor or president down for the purpose of politics, you are bringing the state or country down.

“This is because the Governor or the President is sitting with public resources and everybody must encourage him to succeed and that’s the only way we, as a nation, can grow”.

Earlier, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori said the completion of the High Court building was in line with his commitment to the completion of projects inherited from previous administrations.

Oborevwori said he was motivated to complete the project because the judiciary was the only arm of government without a befitting building for their operations.

He said the presentation of 20 Toyota Prado SUVs to judges in the state was a fulfillment of “a promise made and a promise kept”.

While thanking the former President for coming to inaugurate the project, he said the erstwhile President remained a great Nigerian patriot, statesman and unique leader, in and out of office.

“On behalf of the government and good people of Delta State, I thank you for your friendship, partnership, and sustained interest in the progress of our dear state and Nigeria in general.

“Of the three arms of government, only the judiciary was lacking a befitting office building. This motivated me to hasten the completion of this project. I am glad that today the narrative has changed for good. The implication, going forward, is that the cause of justice will now be better served for the greater good of all.

“As a government, we have taken steps to further ensure that our judges and associated staff not only operate in a conducive and enabling environment, but are also provided with the necessary tools that complement the functionality and prestige of their offices”.

The Commissioner for Housing, Mr. Godknows Angele, at the occasion, said the building consisted of five floors, six court rooms, six conference halls, six witness waiting rooms, six holding cells, six Secretarial offices, two general conference halls, a ceremonial hall, Multi-purpose Hall, lawyers’ lounge, judges’ lounge, VIP lounge and a library, among others.

In his remarks, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, represented by the Presiding Judge of the Court of Appeal, Asaba Division, Hon. Justice Bolaji Yusuf, commended the state government for providing the magnificent edifice as a temple of justice in the state.

He expressed optimism that other states would emulate the Delta State example by providing similar magnificent temples of justice for the administration of justice in other parts of the country.

Also, in her remarks, Chief Judge of Delta State, Justice Theresa Diai, thanked Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and his predecessors for the completion of the modern edifice, describing it as a magnificent testament and enduring commitment to the pursuit of justice and excellence in the judiciary.

The Chief Judge said the new High Court Complex had internet access and other critical Information Technology (IT) facilities in the building to enhance e-filing of court processes and e-payments for services rendered by the High Court of Justice.

CP gives nod on Commercial motorcycle ban in Delta

Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi has hailed the State Government ban on commercial motorcyclists “Okada” in the capital territory and other flash points in the state.

Olufemi gave the nod when he received the executives and members of the Asaba Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on courtesy visit in Asaba.

He said that Okada riders have become prime source for conveying criminal elements to commit crime in the state, adding that the ban on Okada and the Metal Scavengers (Iron Condemn) would help to check the tide of crime and enable residents “sleep with their two eyes closed “.

“On the ban on Okada, I pushed for this, it might not be palatable to a lot of people, when we came we realised that there was an upsurge of crime and it became a problem.

” To check this, we look at the examples of Abuja and Lagos where government had to sit on the use of Okada and in Delta, there is a law that regulates the timing for Tricycle Operators (Keke) and Okada.

“But they have become lawless such that at the slightest provocation, people are being attacked, stabbed or killed.

“For me, we are not going to allow anybody takeover the state while we are here because people need to go about their lawful businesses and when they return from work, they should be able to sleep with their eyes closed.

“The ban on Okada may be painful but it brings more security to our people and the problems we have with them is that a lot don’t have registration number and the riders have no permit to ride, so it will be difficult to trace them when they commit crime,” Olufemi said.

He said that the command had also nabbed three-man gang who specialises in house to house robbery and car snatching on Tuesday in Asaba.

He noted that the gang came from the neighbouring States to rob in Delta, and thereafter return to their base, adding that efforts were on to arresting other members of the gang.

The CP also disclosed that he has sent some officers to keep vigil at the Second Niger Bridge to check the recent reported vandalisation at the bridge.

While commending the support from the journalists, he, however, berated some online reports emanating from certain persons as disturbing, unregulated and hasty without proper verification

He called on the apex body, the NUJ to look into the hasty nature of online reporting, while urging journalists to always verify their reports before going to the press.

According to Olufemi, the partnership with journalists is appreciated, you help us to inform the people of what the Command is doing to protect life and properties.

“It has also been for me a thing of joy, with the support from the journalists because without your publications of what we are doing in the command, nobody will know what we are actually doing.

“I am sure that you know that we have our challenges, yet in your magnanimity, most of the challenges have not been over highlighted.

“On the online reports, I have had to speak in different fora and I have complained about the unregulated nature of what is sent on online platforms.

“Where there is no editor and for most online persons, he is the reporter, editor, publisher and everything and a lot of things are sent out even without verifying.

“There is a lot of danger and I do not really know what the chapel, State council or the national is doing to check and bring them under control and under authority,” Olufemi said.

Earlier, the Chairman, Asaba Correspondents’ Chapel, Comrade Ifeanyi Olannye has said that the visit was to familiarise and to congratulate him on his posting to Delta.

He assured of the journalists’ continued partnership with the command to sustain the existing peace and security in the state.

He also advised the command to deploy more men and officers to strengthen the peace and security in the state at the advent of government ban on commercial motorcycle operation in the state.End.
