US Invasion of Venezuela: ECOWAS Urges Restraint, Backs Dialogue The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed concern over the recent developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, calling on all parties to exercise restraint and respect international law. In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, ECOWAS acknowledged the right of states to combat international crimes such as terrorism and drug trafficking but stressed that such efforts must be carried out in line with established principles of international law. The regional bloc reminded the international community of the obligation to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations, as provided under Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter. ECOWAS said it fully aligns with the African Union’s position, articulated in a statement released on 3 January 2026, which urged restraint and encouraged inclusive dialogue among the people of Venezuela as a means of addressing the country’s challenges. The statement comes amid heightened tensions in Venezuela following reports of foreign military actions and growing international reactions to the evolving security and political situation in the South American country. Venezuela has in recent years faced prolonged political instability, economic hardship, and international pressure, leading to sharp divisions both domestically and globally over how best to address the crisis. ECOWAS reiterated its solidarity with the Venezuelan people and called on all states to respect Venezuela’s independence and territorial integrity. The bloc expressed support for efforts by Venezuelans to determine the future of their country through an inclusive and peaceful process. The West African regional body joins a growing list of international and regional organisations advocating de-escalation and dialogue as tensions continue to draw global attention.

Cuba Accuses U.S. of Military Aggression Against Venezuela, Pledges Unwavering Support

Cuba has issued a fierce condemnation of what it claims was a military attack by the United States on Venezuela, describing the alleged action as a serious breach of international law and a threat to regional peace.

In an official statement released in Havana on Saturday, the Cuban Revolutionary Government said it stood in full solidarity with Venezuela and its leadership, backing calls by Caracas for proof of life of President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores. Cuba also demanded their immediate release, alleging they were being held by U.S. authorities.

Havana characterised the reported operation as a “cowardly and criminal act,” accusing Washington of escalating a long-running campaign of pressure and hostility against Venezuela.

According to the statement, U.S. actions in the Caribbean intensified from September 2025, including increased naval activity justified by what Cuba called unfounded allegations.

The Cuban government said the alleged aggression was driven by imperial ambitions, claiming it was aimed at asserting dominance over Latin America and gaining access to Venezuela’s vast natural resources. It warned that the move was intended not only to undermine Venezuela’s sovereignty but also to intimidate other governments in the region.

Cuba placed responsibility for any deaths or damage resulting from the situation on the U.S. administration, naming President Donald Trump and senior officials as accountable for the consequences of what it described as reckless actions.

Recalling the 2014 Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace, signed in Havana by regional governments, Cuba said the current developments represented a direct challenge to that collective commitment.

The statement urged the international community to reject what it called an unlawful act against a United Nations member state, warning that allowing such an action to go unanswered would set a dangerous precedent. Cuba stressed that Venezuela had not attacked the United States or posed a military threat.

Reaffirming its close alliance with Caracas, Cuba said it remained prepared to support Venezuela in defending its independence and sovereignty, calling on governments, parliaments and social movements worldwide to condemn the alleged aggression.

2026/Insecurity: Nwayalani Tasks Government To Strengthen Local Vigilantes

By Magnus Emuji

As citizens of Nigeria and Delta State in general usher in the year 2026, a frontline community leader and the Isagba of Okpanam Kingdom, Chief (Dr.) Paul Nwayalani, has harped on the need for government at all levels to strengthen the local security outfit popularly known as the local vigilantes to assist in tackling the ravaging insecurity challenges in their different localities.

Nwayalani, who gave the advice in his Obodogba country home, Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State in an exclusive interview with journalists, dismissed the call for state police, which according to him would be used to serve the interest of politicians in government and compromise the safety of the people.

He said that local vigilantes were in better position to win the war against crimes , pointing out that most of the criminal activities in any community would not have been possible without the community members being involved and that every community knows their people.

On the economy, Nwayalani enjoined Tinubu led federal government to do everything humanly possible to bring down the souring inflation down , adding that the high inflation and unhealthy policies of government were responsible for the level of poverty ravaging the country.

Nwayalani told political leaders to show unwavering commitment to put the country in the right path for meaning growth and development.

While commending the immediate past governor of Delta State, Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa and the current governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori for their efforts in transforming the state to an enviable height, Chief Nwayalani urged the state government to articulate more policies and programmes in 2026 geared towards surpassing its achievements.

Speaking on the 2027 general election, Chief Nwayalani cautioned politicians against unnecessary gang up by aligning with a political platform with the sole purpose of unseating any administration for their own benefits, recalling that in 2015 similar strategies were unleashed to remove former President Goodluck Jonathan out of power.

Nwayalani, however, implored Nigerians to be extremely careful in the choice of their leaders in 2027 , noting that leadership was not an easy task , hence only only individuals with unblemish track records and with the understanding of the problems of the country and capacity to proffer solutions should be voted into power.

He expressed satisfaction with the performance of the traditional ruler of Okpanam, HRM, Dr. Michael Mbanefo Ogbolu, the Ugoani of Okpanam Kingdom and described him as a focused, pragmatic, unassuming leader and unionist with the uncommon passion for the uplifment of the community.

He reminded the youths in the community the importance of abstaining from crimes and embrace peace and unity at all times, urging them to always show respect to their elders .

Nwayalani said that most of the youths of nowadays have lost moral values and discipline , even as he enjoined them to embrace skills and other genuine means of livelihood telling them that the era of land selling and racketeering had gone .

Uzum Felicitates Ebie As He Marks Birth Anniversary

By JOHNSON EBIGIDE

Eugene Azuka Uzum has felicitated Chiedu Ebie, Chairman of the Governing Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) as he marks his birth anniversary today, Friday, January 2, 2026.

Uzum, a lawyer, politician, public analyst, youth advocate and Convener of Ika People’s Congress (IPC), said Ebie birth in Ika Nation has brought great positive transformations to not only the locality, but in Nigeria and beyond.

Uzum maintained that as the Chairman of the NDDC, Ebie had attracted monumental infrastructural development to Ika Nation, Delta State and the Niger Delta region of the country, adding that his footprints in lighting up Otolokpo and ensuring regular flow of portable water among other lifesaving projects in the locality would remain indelible in the mind of the people.

While commending President Tinubu for considering Ebie worthy of leading the governing board of the NDDC, Uzum urged Deltans and the people of the Niger Delta region to continue to rally support for Ebie to motivate him to do more for the region, adding that Ebie within a short time of leading the commission had surpassed the aspirations of the people of the region in terms of service delivery.

“On behalf of my family, the royal father and people of Otolokpo, I sincerely congratulate Ebie for being a worthy son of Ika Nation as he marks his birth anniversary,” Uzum stated.

“I pray God to continue to bless him with excellent health, wisdom and the enablement to enhance his passion to uplift humanity,” Uzum added.

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritising road safety over punitive sanctions in addressing the recurring incidents involving articulated trucks, particularly around the Ubu Bridge axis in Ogwashi-Uku along the newly constructed Ughelli–Asaba dual carriageway.

The State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, disclosed this in a statement, noting that the government would implement decisive measures aimed at curbing the rising cases of accidents involving heavy-duty vehicles on the corridor.

According to the Commissioner, the approach of the Oborevwori administration is anchored on enhanced safety enforcement rather than restrictive or punitive measures that could impede the free movement of goods and services.

He said planned interventions would include stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, improved speed control, and operational checks on articulated trucks plying the route.

Comrade Izeze further called for collective action to prevent future accidents, appealing to professionals, road safety experts, and concerned citizens to voluntarily offer practical, pro bono suggestions targeted at achieving zero accidents on the affected stretch.

He stressed that the appeal was not for consultancy services but for genuine, public-spirited contributions aimed at safeguarding lives and preserving the integrity of the road infrastructure.

The Commissioner explained that the renewed safety push follows a spate of accidents involving articulated trucks on the corridor, which have heightened concerns among motorists and residents despite the road’s recent completion and its enhanced aesthetics.

He revealed that the latest incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, December 30, 2025, marking the seventeenth recorded accident involving articulated trucks on the Ogwashi-Uku–Asaba stretch since the road was completed.

The incident occurred near the Ubu Bridge, a section known for its smooth pavement and modern drainage system designed to channel runoff from the surrounding Ogwashi-Uku hills into drains leading to the Ubu River.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that the articulated truck lost control while approaching the bridge, tilting and partially obstructing the carriageway. Fortunately, no casualties were recorded.

The driver reportedly attributed the accident to mechanical failure, claiming that the truck’s gear selector failed to engage a lower gear while navigating the approach to the bridge.

He dismissed suggestions of fatigue, describing the incident as an act of destiny. However, the explanation has done little to assuage public concern, given the frequency of similar occurrences on the same stretch of road.

“Despite the installation of clearly visible warning signs and speed limit notices before and after the bridge on both approaches installed months ago at the directive of Governor Oborevwori, many articulated truck drivers continue to disregard traffic regulations.

“Governor Oborevwori has consistently maintained that the state must avoid actions that could be perceived as restricting the free movement of goods and services, in line with global best practices.

“His administration has therefore prioritised improved compliance, driver discipline, and road safety measures over outright restrictions on the movement of heavy-duty vehicles.” Izeze added.

The Ogwashi-Uku–Asaba corridor has emerged as one of the busiest interstate routes in the South-South region, serving as a major transit link for articulated trucks travelling from the North, East, and South-West through Asaba and Ughelli to Warri, Yenagoa, Port Harcourt, Akwa Ibom, and Calabar.

This heavy traffic has placed considerable pressure on the road, even as the project continues to attract commendation for its quality and contribution to regional connectivity.

Despite the incidents, residents have acknowledged the broader impact of Governor Oborevwori’s infrastructure drive, noting that the quality of the road reflects the administration’s commitment to people-centred governance.

As investigations into the latest accident continue, stakeholders have renewed calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, improved driver discipline, and sustained public awareness to ensure that the benefits of the road project are not undermined by avoidable mishaps.

The Lucky Adimike Foundation, led by renowned businessman and philanthropist Lucky Adimike, focuses on empowering individuals and families through food distribution, financial assistance, business support, scholarships, healthcare interventions, and church development projects.

The foundation has consistently supported vulnerable families to ease the effects of economic hardship and has provided seed capital to small and medium scale entrepreneurs.

The Night of Praise is designed as a blend of evangelisation, entertainment, and empowerment, featuring praise, worship, prayers, and inspirational messages aimed at uplifting lives.

Explaining the vision behind Faithspiration Initiative, Rev. Fr. Adimike said: “Faithspiration Initiative is introducing a new method of evangelisation. God asked us to be shepherds and fishermen. NESREA Shuts Sunseed Oil Facility in Zaria Over Air Pollution Violations

0

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has ordered the closure of the Sunseed Oil processing plant in Zaria, Kaduna State, following findings of severe air pollution linked to the facility’s operations.

NESREA said the action was taken after investigations confirmed that the plant was emitting harmful pollutants into the atmosphere in breach of the National Environmental (Air Quality Control) Regulations.

The regulations require industries to install effective pollution control systems and adopt cleaner production methods to minimize environmental and health risks.

A statement by the agency’s spokesperson, Nwamaka Ejiofor on Tuesday, said the level of emissions from the Sunseed Oil facility posed a direct threat to the surrounding environment and residents in nearby communities, prompting immediate intervention to halt further damage.

She noted that the enforcement exercise reflects the agency’s resolve to ensure that industrial operators comply with environmental standards and to protect the public from the dangers associated with uncontrolled industrial emissions and effluents.

Commenting on the development, the Director-General of NESREA, Prof. Innocent Barikor, warned companies operating across the country to adhere strictly to national environmental laws.

He stressed that the agency would continue to take decisive action against facilities whose operations endanger public health or degrade the environment.

NESREA reiterated its commitment to regular monitoring and enforcement, noting that environmental protection remains a critical component of sustainable development in Nigeria.

NDDC 2025 BUDGET DEFENCE: SENATOR NED NWOKO HONOURS LATE NWAOBOSHI, RAISES PENDING DELTA COASTAL ROAD

0

Proceedings at the Senate Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) on Tuesday were momentarily solemn before turning robust, as Senator Ned Munir Nwoko used the 2025 budget defence session to honour a late colleague and press home long-standing infrastructure concerns affecting Delta state.

At the commencement of the session, during which NDDC officials appeared before the committee to defend the Commission’s 2025 budget proposal, Senator Ned Nwoko drew attention to the recent passing of former Chairman of the Committee, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi. He moved a motion for a minute’s silence in his honour, which was adopted by the committee.

Turning to the substance of the budget defence, Senator Ned Nwoko engaged the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, on the Commission’s financial performance and project execution record.

Earlier in his presentation, Dr. Ogbuku disclosed that as of October 31, 2025, the Commission’s actual revenue stood at N1.985 trillion, surpassing the projected N1.911 trillion recorded between April 2024 and September 2025, representing a performance level of 104 per cent. He attributed the improved revenue outcome largely to the extension of the 2024 budget implementation to December 31, 2025.

The MD further explained that the proposed 2025 budget, christened the “Budget of Consolidation,” is pegged at N1.75 trillion, reflecting a 9 per cent reduction from the 2024 figure. According to him, the downward adjustment is informed by a deliberate no-borrowing policy adopted by the Commission.

However, Senator Ned Nwoko used the opportunity to raise concerns over a critical road infrastructure project in Delta State which, despite being appropriated in the previous budget, has yet to take off.

“Mr. MD, when you last appeared before this committee, a matter of great importance to my constituents and, indeed, to Delta State was raised. I refer to the road project traversing Oko, Abala, Utchi, Okpai, Aboh, Asaba-Ase, down to Patani. This project was clearly captured in the last budget, yet, to date, no tangible progress has been recorded.”

He emphasised the strategic and humanitarian importance of the project, noting that it was conceived not merely as a transport corridor but as a flood-control intervention for vulnerable communities.

“We are all aware of the strategic value of coastal roads. This particular design was meant to incorporate embankments capable of preventing floodwaters from encroaching into hinterland communities and endangering lives. This is a project with direct social impact, that would significantly improve livelihoods. Unfortunately, despite its inclusion in the budget, nothing has happened.”

The lawmaker indicated that the issue would be further raised during closed-door with the Commission, as the committee subsequently resolved to continue deliberations in executive session.

ActionAid Nigeria Warns of Rising Debt, Weak Social Spending in 2026 Budget Proposal

0

ActionAid Nigeria has raised serious concerns over the Federal Government’s proposed 2026 Appropriation Bill, warning that the budget could worsen Nigeria’s debt burden and further sideline key social sectors critical to poverty reduction and inclusive growth.

In its review of the ₦58.18 trillion budget proposal, the organisation said the 5.8 per cent increase over the 2025 approved budget does not sufficiently address long-standing fiscal and structural challenges. Instead, it noted that the financing plan, size of the deficit, and sectoral priorities pose risks to fiscal sustainability and accountability.

ActionAid Nigeria expressed particular concern over the continued extension of budget implementation timelines, which has resulted in the 2026 budget running alongside extended 2024 and 2025 budgets. According to the organisation, operating multiple budgets simultaneously weakens transparency, limits effective legislative oversight, and increases the risk of mismanagement of public funds, especially for capital and social sector projects.

The group, in a statement on Tuesday by its Country Director, Dr. Andrew Mamedu, also pointed to repeated post-submission changes by the National Assembly, including upward adjustments to allocations without secured funding sources, as a key factor contributing to funding gaps, delayed releases, and the rollover of projects across fiscal years.

On the fiscal outlook, ActionAid Nigeria highlighted that the proposed 2026 budget projects revenue of ₦34.33 trillion against total spending of ₦58.18 trillion, leaving a deficit of ₦23.85 trillion. It described the figure as the largest deficit in Nigeria’s history, representing sharp increases over the 2024 and 2025 deficits.

It warned that heavy reliance on borrowing, without strong investment in productive and social sectors, could deepen inequality and constrain long-term development.

ActionAid Nigeria said that despite government claims that education, health, agriculture, infrastructure, and security are priority areas, lamented that allocations to social sectors remain inadequate.

Mamedu, in the statement, noted that education allocated ₦3.52 trillion, about six per cent of the total budget, and health receiving ₦2.48 trillion, just over four per cent—are both far below international benchmarks, and in contrast with defence allotted spending standing at ₦5.41 trillion.

The organisation also faulted the budget for failing to address underemployment and poor-quality jobs, particularly among women and rural populations, noting insufficient investment in agriculture, rural infrastructure, and women-led enterprises. It further warned that weak funding for social protection programmes could worsen hardship for millions of Nigerians facing rising living costs.

ActionAid Nigeria also criticised the late submission of the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework, Fiscal Strategy Paper, and the 2026 Appropriation Bill, describing it as a breach of the Fiscal Responsibility Act.

The organisation urged the Federal Government and the National Assembly to end the practice of running multiple budgets, strengthen fiscal discipline, reduce dependence on borrowing, and significantly increase funding for education, health, agriculture, and social protection.

It stressed that Nigeria cannot overcome poverty through debt-driven spending, but through a people-centred and accountable budget that prioritises human development.

NSCDC Nabs Three Suspected Infrastructure Vandals in Abuja

0

Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in the Federal Capital Territory have arrested three young men suspected of vandalising public infrastructure in Abuja.

The suspects were intercepted near the National Stadium area close to the National Hospital along Constitution Avenue during intensified patrols carried out as part of yuletide security operations.

According to the NSCDC, the men were allegedly caught in possession of damaged road safety installations, which they were believed to be preparing to transport from the area. Recovered items included several road crash barriers and a heavy-duty hammer.

The suspects were identified as Abdulsalam Aminu, 25, Mustapha Sale, 26, and Suleiman Sani, 19, and they are currently in custody while investigations is said to continue.

Speaking on the development, the FCT Commandant of the NSCDC, Dr. Olusola Odumosu, said the arrests were part of deliberate efforts by the command to protect critical public assets, particularly during festive periods when vandalism and theft often spike.

Organic Love for Governor Sheriff Oborevwori: A Testament of People-Centred Leadership

By Dr. Ifeanyi Michael Osuoza

The spontaneous outpouring of joy witnessed in Effurun and Warri metropolis on Monday was more than a routine reception for a visiting Governor; it was a powerful expression of organic love and genuine appreciation for purposeful leadership. Residents, traders, commuters, and motorists abandoned their daily routines to cheer Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, as he inspected the ongoing construction of the DSC Roundabout and Enerhen Junction flyovers, alongside the reconstruction of a section of the Warri–Sapele–Benin Road.

This groundswell of excitement did not stem from political mobilization or stage-managed theatrics. It was a natural response from a people who see, feel, and benefit directly from governance that touches their daily lives. For years, traffic congestion, road deterioration, and infrastructural neglect posed serious challenges within the Warri–Effurun metropolis. Today, those challenges are being systematically confronted through bold, well-planned, and people-focused infrastructure projects under Governor Oborevwori’s watch.

As the Governor moved along the project corridors, he was greeted by jubilant crowds who poured out heartfelt encomiums, hailing him as a leader who listens, understands, and delivers. Traders praised the ease of movement and improved business prospects the projects promise, while motorists and residents spoke with optimism about reduced travel time, enhanced safety, and a renewed urban outlook for the area.

Governor Oborevwori’s leadership philosophy, anchored on the MORE Agenda, finds practical expression in these transformative projects. His approach to governance is not distant or abstract; it is visible in concrete structures, functional roads, and improved urban infrastructure that respond directly to the needs of the people. By personally inspecting these projects, the Governor reaffirmed his commitment to quality, accountability, and timely delivery, values that have endeared him to Deltans across all strata.

The scenes in DSC Roundabout and Enerhen Junction underscore a simple truth: when leadership is sincere, inclusive, and impact-driven, the people respond with trust and affection. The organic love shown to Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori is a reflection of confidence in his vision and an endorsement of his unwavering commitment to building a modern, connected, and prosperous Delta State.

Indeed, the jubilation witnessed on Monday stands as a clear message from the people. Good governance speaks louder than words, and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s works are speaking eloquently across Delta State.

Anioma State: Nwoko Breaks Silence, Says Bill Gaining Ground Despite Resistance

0

Senator Ned Nwoko has broken silence on the ongoing development regarding the creation of Anioma state. There have been unconfirmed reports as the quest for Anioma state continues to gather momentum at the National Assembly.

In a phone conversation with Senator Nwoko, he revealed that despite unwarranted resistance from some political actors who will be the beneficiaries of the state if created, the proposal has garnered massive support.

Senator Nwoko said the agitation, which many in the region initially dismissed as unrealistic, has now become a prominent national issue.

According to him, doubts expressed early by members of the Delta State House of Assembly and the House of Representatives from the zone did not deter his resolve to pursue the bill as he is determined to see to its realization.

“They kept telling me it wouldn’t work, that it is not possible to create states,” the senator said. “But I remained focused to the point that Anioma State is now a national discussion.”

Senator Nwoko expressed concern over opposition statements from political actors in Delta North rejecting Anioma State’s inclusion in the South East geopolitical zone.

He noted that while critics insist the proposed state should be located in the South South, they have not taken concrete legislative steps to pursue that option.

“If they want Anioma in the South South, why have they not initiated any bill to that effect?” he asked. “You don’t just make statements without action. If you believe in an alternative, you must lead the process.”

He argued that the lack of a formal legislative effort by opponents, especially members of the House of Representatives from Delta North, undermines their position and stalls a cause rooted in long-standing historical aspirations of the Anioma people.

Providing an update on the legislative process, Nwoko disclosed that Anioma State has recorded strong support during voting within the South East caucus of the National Assembly.

He said that during an initial round of voting, several South East states backed Anioma, placing it ahead of other proposed states.

A second round of voting further strengthened Anioma’s standing. According to him, sustained lobbying over the past two weeks has resulted in a majority of senators signing in support of the bill.

“On the first day of voting, Ebonyi voted for Anioma state. Abia state voted for Anioma state. Imo state voted for Anim state. Anambra state voted for Anim state. Enugu voted for Adada. That was the first voting.

“After that, they were given one more chance each to choose another state. Ebonyi chose Anim as second choice. Abia chose Anim as second choice. Imo chose Anioma as second choice.

“Anambra chose Adada as second choice. Enugu chose Animoma as second choice. That was how we ended that day.

“But now what we have done is we have gotten majority of the senators. That first night, they resolved that they would vote individually. But without dismissing the first block vote. So, Anim first, Anioma second, Adada third. Along the line, Aba state dropped, Etiti state dropped, and Orlu state dropped.

“But, with our continuous engagement for the past two weeks, we were able to get most of the lawmakers to sign for Anioma. So, we have the majority.

He accused two members of the House of Representatives from Delta North of working against the voting process. He said beside stalling the voting process, one of them reportedly voted for Adada state.

Responding to allegations that stakeholders were not adequately consulted, the senator insisted that extensive engagements were held before and during the legislative process.

He cited meetings with traditional rulers, cultural groups, and community organisations across Anioma land, as well as consultations with Anioma groups in Abuja.

He said: “We had a summit in Grand Hotel in August last year. I’ve met with the kings in Owa, Obior, Okpanam, Asaba, Ndokwa east and west. I met with Ndokwa Neku in Ukwuani. I met with Onu Ika in Ika. I met with various groups in Abuja.”

Senator Nwoko also welcomed the growing involvement of young people in the agitation, describing their participation as a positive development that has given new energy to the struggle.

The senator reiterated that his bill clearly proposes Anioma State in the South East, with Asaba as its capital and nine local government areas constituting the state. He downplayed zoning concerns, stressing that the creation of the state itself is the priority.

“Zoning is secondary,” he said. “Once you have a state, you have a state.”

As the National Assembly prepares to resume in January 2026, Nwoko said proponents of Anioma State remain optimistic and realistic about the road ahead.

UNODC Advocates Inclusion of PWDs in Crime Prevention and Security Strategies

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has called for stronger inclusion of persons with disabilities in Nigeria’s crime prevention and security strategies, warning that exclusion weakens national responses to transnational organised crime.

This call was made during a Stakeholder Dialogue on Crime Prevention and Transnational Threats, held at the UN House in Abuja as part of activities marking the 2025 International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD).

In his opening remarks, the UNODC Deputy Representative, Danilo Campisi emphasized that disability inclusion must move beyond symbolic recognition to become a core component of policy design, data collection, and implementation.

He noted that inclusive governance is a human right and a prerequisite for sustainable development and effective security frameworks.
