NDLEA Arrests Billionaire Drug Baron Linked with N3bn Abba Kyari’s Team Tramadol Deal

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Monday said the billionaire drug baron fingered in the N3 billion tramadol deal involving the embattled suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari-led Intelligence Response Team, IRT, is now in their net.

A statement by the spokesman of the anti-narcotics agency, Femi Babafemi read: “Billionaire drug baron behind the N3billion tramadol deal involving the embattled suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari-led Intelligence Response Team, IRT, Chief Afam Mallinson Emmanuel Ukatu has been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.”

He disclosed that the arrest was after months of surveillance and Ukatu’s evasion of arrest, adding that Ukatu who is Chairman of Mallinson Group of Companies was eventually nabbed onboard a flight to Abuja at the MM2 terminal of the Lagos airport on Wednesday 13th April.

Babafemi said Investigations revealed that Ukatu has been a major importer of large consignments of different brands and high dosages of tramadol hydrochloride, ranging from 120mg, 200mg, 225mg and 250mg, all of which are illicit.

He said Ukatu owns pharmaceutical and plastic manufacturing companies, which he used as a cover to import illicit drugs into the country, in addition to operating 103 bank accounts, most of which are used to launder money.

He disclosed that Ukatu came under watch last year after five cartons of Tramadol 225mg were seized from his staff on 4th May 2021 when he sent them to sell to undercover police officers (unknown to Ukatu) from the then Kyari-led IRT of the Nigeria Police, Ikeja, Lagos. The price of a carton of tramadol was negotiated at N17 million each as against the then black market value that ranged between N18 million and N20 million a carton in Lagos.

He said after the arrest of Ukatu’s staff: Pius Enidom and Sunday Ibekwete, Kyari’s men were then led by the suspects to Mallinson’s warehouse at Ojota in Lagos where 197 additional cartons of tramadol 225mg were seized by the IRT Team. The monetary value of the 202 cartons of the seized products from Mallinson in one day was over N3 billion.

He alleged that three weeks after the seizure, the Kyari’s IRT team transferred only 12 Cartons of the tramadol with one truck and a suspect to the Lagos Command of the NDLEA, leaving 190 cartons unaccounted for, and after over eight months of following the lead, anti-narcotics officers of the agency eventually arrested Ukatu at the Lagos airport on 13th April 2022.

Babafemi recalled that Kyari and four top members of his team are already facing trial for a different but similar offence at a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Large Quantities of Cocaine in Teabags Seized at Abuja, Lagos Airports

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have thwarted plans of drug traffickers to smuggle large quantities of cocaine in teabags into the country through Lagos and Abuja international airports.

A statement on Sunday by the spokesman of NDLEA, Femi Babafemi said fresh attempts by Brazil based drug cartels to smuggle substantial quantities of cocaine into the country through the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja and Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos by concealing the Class-A illicit substance in teabags have again been thwarted.

He said at least, four traffickers involved in the attempts to import and export illicit drugs through the country in the last week are now in the custody of the anti-narcotics agency.

He disclosed that one of the traffickers is 33-year-old Pascal Ekene Okolo, who was arrested during an inward clearance of Qatar Airways flight from Sao Paulo via Doha at the arrival hall of the Abuja International Airport on Sunday 17th April.

He said Okolo who claimed to be into wine business in Brazil was arrested with a travelling bag containing different medicinal teabags, which were used to conceal 4.1 kilogrammes of cocaine.

He also disclosed that on the same day, a Canada based Nigerian, Anigo Godspower was intercepted at the D-Arrival Hall of the Lagos International Airport during an inward clearance of passengers on Qatar Airways from Sao Paolo via Doha to Lagos, noting that when his luggage was searched, two blocks of cocaine with a total weight of 2.1 kilogrammes were discovered.

He said the 52-year-old Anigo claimed he operated an unregistered Bureau De Change business before delving into the illicit drug trade.

Babafemi said the bid by another cartel to export 950 grammes of heroin concealed in the soles of lady’s footwears through the MMIA cargo shed was equally foiled by anti-narcotics officers who have so far arrested two suspects linked to the crime.

He disclosed that those arrested between 16th and 17th April in connection with attempt to export the drug to Monrovia, Liberia include: Idokoja Chukwurah and Patrick Tochukwu.

He said NDLEA operatives in raids in Kano, Kaduna, Benue and Akwa Ibom state seized no less than 88,734 doses of tramadol, pentazocine, diazepam and swinol. In Kano, Aliyu Usman, 28, was arrested at Railway area of the state capital with 47,000 capsules of tramadol and 2,000 ampules of pentazocine injection on Tuesday 19th April while Saminu Usman, 28, was nabbed with 24,710 tramadol tablets at Gadar Tamburawa area of Kano two days earlier.

He also said in Benue, another dealer, Emeka Eze was arrested at an NDLEA checkpoint at Adikpo, Kwande local government area of the state with 10,000 tramadol capsules and 900 tablets of swinol, while in Kaduna state, the duo of Raphael Daniel and David Musa were arrested at Mando park, Kaduna with 1 kilogramme of cocaine last Thursday.

He added that a week after Muhammad Ibrahim sent 12.1 kilogrammes of cannabis from Lagos to Kaduna, operatives were able to trace and arrest him last Thursday and brought him to Kaduna after his consignment was intercepted. Another dealer, Kamilu Ibrahim was also arrested same day at Kargi village in Kubau local government area, Kaduna State with 10.6 kilogrammes cannabis sativa, while Bashir Ibrahim was arrested last Friday after his four consignments containing cannabis sativa weighing 44.6 kilogrammes were intercepted three days earlier along Abuja-Kaduna express road.

In Akwa Ibom state, operatives arrested two female drug dealers: Eno-Obong Edet, 36, and Hossana Ukpong, 28, with various quantities of rohypnol, diazepam, tramadol and cannabis, while a suspected fake security agent was arrested on Saturday in Abuja while moving 23.8 kilogrammes cannabis from Lagos to Maiduguri, Borno state.

Meanwhile, Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Retd) apparent pleased with the development, commended the officers and men of the NAIA, MMIA, Kano, Kaduna, Akwa Ibom and FCT Commands of the agency for sustaining the heat on drug cartels.

He however charged them and those in other commands across the country to remain vigilant and on the offensive until the last gramme of illicit drugs is taken off the street.

Anambra Chairman Nigeria Red Cross Society Prof. Katchy, Raises Alarm Over Increasing Mental Health Issues In Nigeria

BY SUNNY A. DAVID:

Nigerians have been urged to join hands with the government to tackle the increasing challenge of illicit drugs and substance abuse to stem the alarming rate of mental illness across the Country.

Speaking to journalists in Awka, the Anambra State Chairman of Nigeria Red Cross Society Professor Peter Katchy, cautioned that illicit drugs use and dependency among young people are harming the socioeconomic life of the society and threatening the future of the Country.

Our correspondent reports that according to World Health Organisation, about fifty million Nigerians are suffering from one sort of mental illness or another while survey by the Federal Government revealed that over fourteen-point three million Nigerians abuse illicit drugs representing fifteen per cent of the country’s population who are between fifteen and Sixty-four years.

Professor Katchy explained that the use of illicit drugs by children and young people has lasting adverse effects on their mental and physical development as according to him, drug abuse can impact the brain’s ability to function in the short term as well as prevent proper growth development later in life which he noted create various problems for families, communities and entire society including encouraging indecent dressing, display of psychiatric tendencies and often a disruption of academic and social activities.

The Chairman regretted that in addition to illicit drugs, malnutrition occasioned by economic hardship is also compounding mental health issues resulting in anxiety and depression which have continued to disable people especially youths, thereby undermining healthy lifestyles and encouraging social vices.

Professor Katchy urged families to strive to inculcate strong moral values in children while asking security agencies and schools to clamp down on those who abuse gender dressing as well as those who peddle illicit drugs and other intoxicants among minors and youths.

Also speaking, a retired school teacher, Mrs. Nkechi Onyekachukwu urged parents to closely monitor the activities of their children and their friends to protect them against negative peer group influence that could lead to illicit drug use and attendant consequences.

Peter Obi: I Will Fix Nigeria In Less Than Four Years

The Peoples Democratic Party Presidential aspirant, Mr. Peter Obi, has said he will reposition Nigeria in less than four years if voted as the president of the country in the next year’s general elections.

He stated this in Awka, the Anambra State Capital during the Anambra Central Senatorial District Stakeholders’ Briefing/Town Hall Meeting organised by Senator Uche Ekwunife.

Mr. Obi said, “Nigeria must create jobs; it must give people the opportunity to earn their livelihood, and it is not a rocket science. I have travelled to over 30 countries and I still say it that all I need is four years to position Nigeria to the path of progress.”

The Presidential aspirant said he would fix insecurity, bad economy, poor electric power supply and ensure food security in the country among others within the shortest possible time as President.

The former Anambra State Governor added, “Who says we can’t enjoy steady power supply in this country? Egypt, between 2016 and today, has doubled its power generation and distribution from 28,000 megawatts to 58,000 megawatts. Vietnam has doubled its own from 38 to 76.

“What is happening here? Why are they wasting people’s time here? Let us give people conditions. If I am Mr. President, if we do not have 20,000 megawatts in three years, I’ll go home,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Senators and other stakeholders in the State on Wednesday endorsed Mr. Obi for President.

They said their support for Obi’s Presidential aspiration was based on his impressive performance when he was Governor of the State from 2006 – 2014.

At the meeting were both State and Federal Lawmakers as well as Traditional Rulers, Presidents General of Communities, Religious and Market Leaders, Leadership of Organisations, Youth Leaders and other stakeholders across party lines.

Chairman of the occasion, Senator Ndi Obi, said he was pleased with the Leadership qualities of Mr. Peter Obi, adding that he had made positive impacts in the lives of the people.

Senator Obi who was a former Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Inter-Party Affairs said he was very confident that Obi could fix Nigeria’s problems if given the opportunity to do so.

The representative of Awka North and South Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Chief Chinedu Onwuaso, moved a motion for the endorsement of Obi for President and it was overwhelmingly supported by the crowd in the hall.

Senator Ekwunife in her speech, thanked the people of Anambra Central for the opportunity given to her to represent them in the Senate, saying that she would do more if given another chance.

She said ,”Beyond the discharge of my official duties as your Senator, I have continued to intervene in the welfare of constituents through the Senator Uche Ekwunife Foundation.

“I recognise the fact that while we move motions, sponsor bills and attract projects; a lot of our constituents are passing through difficult times. Many are unable to fund their medical treatment, pay their children’s school fees and so on.

“We are grateful that through our little effort, hundreds of constituents have received assistance. We have, through the foundation, paid medical bills and performed other charitable services. We do this in our bid to provide succour to the less privileged ones among us.

“What we have achieved in the last two and half years is a litmus test of what we can achieve if you once again grant me your mandate. I urge you to join me in this journey of building the senatorial district of our dream.

“With your support, I will continue to raise the bar and offer a representation that is vocal, effective, unmatched and people-oriented.”

MNJTF Operation Lake Sanity Makes In Road Into Terrorists’ Enclaves In Lake Chad Region

  1. In a clear demonstration of it’s determined efforts to speedily eliminate the Boko Haram Terrorists /Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) insurgents hibernating along the fringes of the Lake Chad, the forces of the Multinational Joint task Force (MNJTF) have in the past weeks been conducting a well coordinated land and air offensives. The Operation codenamed OPERATION LAKE SANITY is a joint and combined operations involving the MNJTF troops from Nigeria, Niger and Cameroon and troops from Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK- Nigeria) as well as the Air Task Forces of the MNJTF and OPHK, other security agencies and the Civilian Joint Taskforce (CJTF).
  2. Steadily advancing in different corridors of the theatre towards identified enclaves, the dogged troops operating under the shared aspiration of the MNJTF made gradual but unprecedented incursions into the insurgents dens. Some of the areas cleared include ZANARI, ARINA WOJE which served as a major fabrication workshop, ASAGAR, LARKI and GARERE. Other areas cleared include KERENOA, WURJE, AREGE, ABADAM, DORON LELEWA, KOLARAM and several other locations around the Islands. Within the period of this operation, well over a hundred terrorists have been neutralised. Including over 10 top commanders neutralised following intelligence driven lethal air strikes in the Lake Chad islands by the combined Air Taskforces. Some of the commanders include Abubakar Dan Buduma, Abubakar Shuwa, Abu Ali and Abu Jubrilla among others. Relatedly, sophisticated weapons of different calibres were either destroyed or captured including a 105 mm artillery piece, several canoes/boats, motorcycles, bicycles, other terrorists’ equipment, several Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) making factories and bunkers were destroyed. In the course of the operation, significant number of innocent citizens mostly women and children held captive by the criminals were rescued. Large quantity of food stuff (grains), fuel dumps, illicit drugs, terrorists’ uniforms and other house holds materials were recovered and destroyed immediately.
  3. Recent activities of the Operations include a clearance patrol to Fedondiya settlement where logistics and foodstuffs including several bags of maize and beans, motorcycles, some immobilized and cannibalized military and civil vehicles, were discovered. Others include grinding machines ,other vehicle fabrication tools and military uniforms were all destroyed and set ablaze in the location. It is obviously a big Boko Haram /ISWAP camp having another large IED making and vehicle borne IED making factory that was cleverly camouflaged to prevent detection from the air. In a related development, the MNJTF troops on clearance patrols in the general areas of Kimeguna near the Lake Chad in Niger republic accosted BHT/ISWAP logisticians ferrying Four Hundred Fifty Seven (457) bags of fish in several carts. The bags of fish were immediately destroyed in line with the MNJTF Standing Operating Procedure, while the suspects are being profiled.
  4. The obviously frustrated criminal,BHT/ISWAP have resorted to indiscriminate laying of IEDs and use of Vehicle Borne Explosive Devices attacks. One pattern noticed in the operation is that the criminals hastily withdraw and avoid making contact with the approaching troops . They instead rely on suicide vehicle borne attacks. About four (4) different such attacks have so far targeted the determined troops who have not been deterred. Sadly, eighteen (18) soldiers including an officer have been wounded in these attacks and have been evacuated to various military medical facilities for treatment while three soldiers and one member of the CJTF paid the supreme sacrifice.
  5. Despite the obvious challenges of difficult terrain,IED threats and sundry challenges, especially in this religious season, the troops continue to maintain the momentum, remaining focused and determined to pursue and decimate the fleeing terrorists, wherever they go in the Lake Chad islands. The Force Commander (FC) MNJTF, Major General Abdul Khalifah Ibrahim has commended the Deputy Force Commander, sector commanders, other officers and especially the gallant officers and men of MNJTF and other operations, including the CJTF actively operating in the field for their courage and commitment. While paying tribute to the members of this operation, who paid the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty, he referred to them as heroes that would never be forgotten. He also prayed for the quick recovery of the wounded heroes. The FC urged the troops to be resolute and bold to finally eradicate the criminals from the Lake Chad areas and promised continuous logistics support to the troops. General Ibrahim advised the terrorists to lay down their arms like thousands of their colleagues who had done so instead of pursuing a futile and failed cause. He finally appealed to the communities in the areas of operation and beyond to always support security forces by passing credible information on the terrorists quickly to bring the scourge of terrorism in the area to an end. FG Needs to Deploy Technology to Tackle Violence During Election -CSO

Federal Government has been advised to tackle violence during the upcoming electoral season by deploying technology.

The advised was given on Thursday in Abuja by a Civil Society Organisation, CSO, Stand To End Rape, STER, which lamented that many incidences of electoral violence are against women in the country.

The Executive Director of STER, Oluwaseun Osowobi, during a press briefing and launch of Strategic Innovation Fund, SIF, project report, titled: “Vulnerable and Outside the Margins: From Challenges to Informed Inclusion” said national and state governments including communities should leverage technology to tackle electoral violence.

She urged that a nationwide awareness-raising initiative on the use of platforms to report apps and training should be implemented across the country, noting that this will aid data tracking on incidences of violence during elections in real-time and also equip security agencies to track persons in precarious situations, intervene and make available prompt support.

Osowobi called on FG to double it’s effort in combatting violence against women, particularly on the domestication and implementation of all international and regional human rights treaties to protect women’s rights.

She pointed-out that there is a need for the state Houses of Assembly to ensure the adoption and implementation of the violence Against Persons Prohibition, VAPP, Act and Child Right Act.

She said: “Review of the VAPP Act by the Human Rights Experts established in November 2015 and mandated to compile a list of laws to be reviewed for compliance with human rights norms and standards. This would be done under the purview of the National Human Rights Commission which is vested in national human rights institutions in receiving and investigating complaints of human rights abuses, with the power to enforce decisions.

“Domestication and implementation of the CEDAW and the Maputo Protocol and other international and regional human rights treaties to protect women’s rights.

“The State Houses of Assembly should ensure the adoption and proper implementation of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act and Child Rights Act.

“Women’s rights must be prioritized in allocating funding and training government officials, including police officers and court officials. Members of the police force should receive in-depth training while in and after graduating from the Police Academy on adequate and survivor-centered response to gender-based violence.

“Nationwide Sensitisation Efforts by The National Orientation Agency., Independent National Electoral Commission and other stakeholders, including CSOs. This would also include training for election/political/security stakeholders by the Electoral body.

“Adequate security, welfare and logistics should be provided for Corp members involved in election duties. STER reiterates the call for security reinforcement for all the Adhoc staff involved in elections, as a preventive strategy, especially NYSC members in volatile areas.”

Osowobi revealed that findings from the SIF survey which aimed at examining the troubling, multi-dimensional phenomenon of violence against women in politics and elections in Nigeria, have shown that there have been scores of cases regarding rape of ad-hoc staff, particularly corp members who were delegated to cover elections at areas without tight security.

She lamented: “The electoral process in Nigeria is not free from violence, and women face significant gender-based vulnerabilities. In the year prior to the elections, Nigeria experienced more political violence than it had during its previous election cycle in 2011, when over 1000 fatalities were reported.”

She said: “Among the respondents for this study who identify as electoral ad-hoc staff, particularly the Corp (NYSC) members, about 11% of them report that they have either been raped or sexually harassed based on their involvement in the electoral process. Similarly, about 21% of the Corps members reveal that violence has been perpetrated against them by law enforcement officials as a result of their affiliations with electoral management agencies.”

Earlier, the Programme Manager, Women Rights Unit, ActionAid Nigeria, Nkechi Kanny, commended the STER initiative for its efforts in conducting a survey in a bid to address gender based violence in Nigeria.

The SIF project was likewise funded by the Action Aid Nigeria.

NDLEA, DSS Seal Off Abuja Hotel to Stop Launch of New Psychoactive Drink

A joint team of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and Department of State Services (DSS) have raided and sealed off Diplomatic Suite Hotel, Asokoro, Abuja.

A statement by the spokesman of the NDLEA, Femi Babafemi said the hotel was sealed off to stop a cannabis party and the launch of new psychoactive drink.

The statement read: “Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have raided and sealed Diplomatic Suite Hotel, Asokoro, Abuja in a joint operation with men of the Department of State Services, DSS to stop a cannabis party and the launch of a suspected new psychoactive drink.”

Babafemi disclosed that about 200 attendees including three young ladies who organised the hemp party are currently being profiled and interviewed while bottles of the new drink have been taken for lab analysis.

He said the hotel was raided at about 8:18pm on Wednesday following actionable intelligence that some youths were planning to hold a hemp party at the hotel.

He revealed that quantities of cannabis sativa were recovered from the pockets and bags of those arrested at the hemp party.

He said: “The audacious party no doubt is part of attempts by some elements to create a drug subculture in the Nigerian social space,” insisting that: “The NDLEA will however continue to work with other security agencies and relevant stakeholders to ensure abuse of illicit substances is not allowed to get entrenched in the country under any guise.”

UN Allocates $15 million to Address Food Insecurity, Malnutrition in North East

The United Nations has allocated US$15 million to support humanitarian assistance in Nigeria’s North East.

A statement by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN-OCHA) on Thursday said the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mr. Martins Griffiths has allocated US$15 million emergency funding from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to support urgently needed humanitarian assistance in north-east Nigeria.

The statement quoted the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator (a.i) for Nigeria Mr. Matthias Schmale to have said that: “The food security and nutrition situation is deteriorating, with more and more families pushed towards vulnerability, and forced to resort to negative coping mechanisms including child labour and early marriage.”

He added that: “As desperation pushes extremely vulnerable people to the edge, food and nutrition assistance is critical for their survival. The $15 million CERF allocation comes right on time to respond to the most urgent needs of people at extreme risk as we appeal to Member States to provide the resources we urgently need.”

According to the statement, the CERF allocation will enable humanitarian agencies to improve and strengthen timely and coordinated access to appropriate food and cash aid to the most vulnerable in crisis-affected areas.

Schmale said: “Thanks to the support of humanitarian agencies and donors, a catastrophic food insecurity was averted in 2021. However, danger looms again for the people of north-east Nigeria if efforts are not sustained and the urgently needed resources are not made available, enabling to take immediate action for the people of north-east Nigeria.”

The statement revealed that the $15 million allocation to the humanitarian response in Nigeria is part of $100 million that the UN allocated to fight hunger in Africa and the Middle East, as the spill-over effects of the war in Ukraine threaten to push millions even closer to famine and exacerbate humanitarian needs.

Violence and conflict over the last 12 years have turned north-east Nigeria into a prolonged and alarming humanitarian crisis which has displaced 2.2 million people.

According to the Cadre Harmonisé food and nutrition analysis published in March 2022, about 600,000 people are projected to be in an emergency situation, not knowing where their next meal will come from. They are among 4.1 million people projected to be food insecure in the crisis-affected states of Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe, during the peak of the June to August 2022 lean season. This is a 19 per cent increase in the number of people in need of food security assistance since the October 2021 analysis, including an alarming 28 per cent increase in the number of people in the emergency category.

The statement further lamented that malnutrition among children continues to be increasingly threatening, and $351 million is urgently needed by May to deliver life-saving food security and nutrition assistance to the most affected people.

In total, the 2022 Humanitarian Response Plan for Nigeria is seeking $1.1 billion to support 5.5 million people.

CERF is one of the fastest and most efficient mechanisms for providing emergency funding to people in need, through rapid allocations to new and deteriorating crises or where there’s shortage of funds. The fund pools contributions from a range of donors, and resources are allocated on strict life-saving criteria to help the most vulnerable. Over the past six months, CERF has allocated more than $170 million to address rising food insecurity in several countries, including those that will receive the new funding.

He stated this when he visited Kaduna earlier today to commiserate with families, friends, and colleagues of the 2 pilots, Flight Lieutenant Abubakar Muhammed Alkali and Flight Lieutenant Elijah Haruna Karatu, who lost their lives in the tragic accident.

Air Marshal Amao had constituted an Accident Investigation Board upon receiving the sad news of the crash yesterday, to determine the immediate and remote causes of the crash. While at Kaduna earlier today, he assured the officers, airmen and airwomen of 401 Flying Training School that all measures will be emplaced to avert similar occurrence in the future. He also reminded them on the need to remain steadfast and focused on their assigned roles and responsibilities in view of the onerous task before the NAF and other security agency to rid the Northwest and indeed the entire Nation of all criminal elements.

The unfortunate incident of yesterday’s trainer aircraft crash is yet again a tragic reminder of the perilous nature of the military flying profession as well as the risks NAF pilots continually take, daily, to secure Nigeria’s territorial integrity. Kindly bring this information to the awareness of the general public.

Thank you.

Surrender of over 35,000 Boko Haram/ISWAP, is through divine intervention -Zulum

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum has claimed that the mass surrender of over 35,000 fighters and commanders of Boko Haram and Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) was divine intervention through the endless prayers from all over the globe.

The Governor, made the claim in his Easter message, saying the mass surrender of over 35,000 fighters and commanders, was certainly one of Allah’s many miracles towards healing Borno and rest of the Northeast.

He said: “The mass surrender of over 35,000 fighters and commanders, is certainly one of Allah’s many miracles towards healing Borno and rest of the northeast.”

“This mass surrender is product of the endless prayers citizens across Borno, the northeast, rest of Nigeria and indeed the world, have been offering, seeking God’s intervention to heal Borno State. It is the product of immense sacrifices by armed forces and volunteers. It is product of repeated calls by political leaders, clergies, elders and traditional rulers, asking insurgents to lay down their arms and embrace peace.”

“We must therefore be optimistic in welcoming the likely benefits of disarming, demobilizing, rehabilitating and reintegrating mass-surrendered insurgents.”

“However, we must welcome them without disregarding the risks associated with the programme, hence the need for sustain stringent security profiling and other Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration, DDR, procedures that can ensure overall safety of the programme.”

“I therefore urge all citizens to fervently pray for the success of our DDR for the mass surrender of those who seek peace, and for the successes of our armed forces and volunteers in front lines against those who insist on violence.”

“May God grant us enduring peace in Borno State, the northeast and rest of Nigeria. Happy Easter to our christian brothers and sisters.”

He added that: “In over 12 years of our battles with insurgents (Boko Haram and later, ISWAP) Borno State, for the first time, has a golden window that has the potential of ending the insurgency.”

“May God grant us enduring peace in Borno State, the northeast and rest of Nigeria. Happy Easter to our Christian brothers and sisters,” he said.

Group Identifies IPOB Elements Working Against Kanu’s Freedom

  • Making Huge Capital From Kanu’s Detention
  • Attacking Anambra Frustrate Soludo’s Effort To Free Kanu

A Group, Coalition of South East Youth Leaders, COSEYL has said that some elements in the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB were responsible for attacks in Anambra State.

The Group in a press statement signed by its President General, Mr. Goodluck Ibem said the elements are opposed to the release of Nnamdi Kanu because of the money they were making as a result of Kanu’s absence.

He said the Group choose Anambra for latest attacks because Governor Chukwuma Soludo was working hard for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, and the elements feel the attacks will make the Governor abandon the efforts.

The release by COSEYL read: “The gunmen burning Government properties in Anambra are doing so because they are not happy with Soludo’s move to secure Nnamdi Kanu’s release.”

The Group, an umbrella body of all the Youth Groups in the South East geopolitical zone said after a careful study and analysis of the burning and destruction of Local Government Council Secretariats in Anambra State, unprovoked attacks on innocent people by gunmen and targeted attack on the residence of Professor Soludo has confirmed that they were after the Governor.

They said this was because of his move to mobilize South East Governors and other Igbo leaders to negotiate for the release of Nnamdi Kanu who is currently in DSS custody in Abuja.

“Governor Soludo after his swearing-in as the Governor of Anambra State made a categorical statement that he was going to mobilize his colleagues and notable Igbo leaders to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu and called on civil servants to go to work on Mondays.

“After making the statement, heavens was let loose as gunmen and arsonists from no where stated burning down Local Government Secretariats in the State and even made an attempt to attack the house of the Governor.

“The actions of the gunmen showed that they were not interested in the release of Nnamdi Kanu but only wants the Monday sit-at-home to remain and not tempered with despite being cancelled by IPOB Leadership.

“These gunmen and their sponsors knows fully well the consequences of their actions and there are very serious doing it. The reason for their actions point to one fact that there are not interested for the release of Nnamdi Kanu from DSS custody.

“The sponsors of these gunmen don’t want Nnamdi Kanu released maybe because of their personal benefits which will cease if Nnamdi Kanu is released, hence the attack on anyone who dares to make a move to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu,” COSEYL said.

The Group said many Igbo prominent sons have spoken against the Monday sit at home and nothing has happened, but immediately Soludo indicated interest to work towards the release of Kanu, they became agitated.

“We should not be deceived over what is happening in South East. Some people are getting heavy financial benefits over the incarceration of Nnamdi Kanu in DSS custody.

“If Nnamdi Kanu returns, their business will cease to flourish and they will not be getting money hence the attack on anyone who wants to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu from DSS custody.

“What is happening today is not agitation, but pure criminality and banditry. The killings going on presently is South East must stop,” they stated.

Nigerian Politicians And Their Kingmakers

Politics and politicking in Nigeria are becoming like a game for the opaque and deceitful minds, masquerading as politicians, Statemen, Patriots and heroes.

In Nigeria today, every political aspirant is busy, running up and down, looking for endorsement by some kingmakers, power blocs and power brokers all over the tense political space.

While some go to the normal but less travelled route of grassroots mobilisation, others are still flouting age-long primordial affiliations and faulty prejudices that have brought our nation to her knees such as faith, ethnicity and geography.

Our politics and leadership recruitment process are no longer based on competence and the hunger to serve but on a sheer stealthy desire to have access to our collective patrimony for personal aggrandisement and that of cronies.

Even those who should know and be concerned enough to want to bring on board a selfless and altruistic goal-getter through a normal democratic process are themselves, harbouring a crony, puppet or a deliberately orchestrated political hegemon to protect and maintain an interest regardless of its possible debilitating effect on the Nigerian state.

This is where we found ourselves and the reason every aspirant is not genuinely seeking a grassroots approval but a kingmaker of some sort to anchor their hope on.

Our variant of democracy in Nigeria is truly funny; it is a democracy of the Godfathers, kingmakers and puppets. It is one with all the apparachik of political aberration masquerading as normal. It keeps us glued to the blurred and misty screen of hopelessness when we know exactly what to do to bring goodness to the greater number of Nigerians.

Even our own “philosopher-king” has admitted having a crony, an heir apparent, a crown prince of some sort, lurking somewhere whose shoe latchet, no one is worthy to untie. May God give Nigeria a good and reasonable President come 2023.

USAID Launches $3.5 Million Activity to Improve Water Safety in Jigawa, Kano

The United States Agency for International
Development (USAID) has through Partners for Development launched a three-year $3.5
million Water Improvement and Sanitation Enhancement (WISE) activity to improve water safety in Jigawa and Kano states.
According to a statement from USAID on Thursday, the WISE activity will reduce the occurrence and impact of waterborne diseases through improvements in access to clean drinking water and sanitation, and the adoption of key hygiene behaviors.

The statement said one of the first tasks will be to construct or rehabilitate 30 water access points and install 55 sanitation facilities in schools and community health centres, it is expected that these improved water access points will provide clean drinking water to more than 66,000 local residents.
In her remarks, USAID Deputy Mission Director Katie Donohoe said, “Access to basic water, sanitation, and hygiene services within a community are the cornerstone of a healthy, equitable, and prosperous Nigeria.” She added: “When this is done, each community will have a first line defense against the spread of infectious disease and allow children to spend more time in school.”
The Deputy Governor of Jigawa State Umar Namadi said, “Water is life, and it has been one of the priorities of the Jigawa State government.” He added, “We are ready to cooperate with the USAID WISE activity to ensure that safe drinking water is provided to the people of the state.”
According to the 2019 Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene National Outcome Routine Mapping report, two out of five schools in Jigawa State, and three out of four in Kano State do not have access to reliable drinking water. Frontline healthcare workers also lack access to safe water and struggle to deliver high quality health services.

The survey found that over half of community water access services in Jigawa broke down within their first year of operation, while over 20 percent in Kano no longer functioned after six months.

The WISE activity will work toward addressing some of these deficiencies and increase the capacity of local stakeholders to sustain and manage equitable access to water and sanitation.

Easter: Reps Minority Caucus Urges National Rebirth, Economic Renewal

The Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives has felicitated Nigerians on Easter, describing it as the celebration of the triumphant resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ from the dead and the hope of a brighter future for Nigeria as a nation

According to the Caucus in a statement on Friday by the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, Easter, points to the victory of life over death, “reinforces our hope and confidence that no matter how miserable the situation might be under the current leadership, our nation will surely overcome with our trust in God, love for one another and determination to unite and democratically enthrone a purposeful leadership in our country.

“Indeed, Easter offers inexorable lessons in faith, hope, patience and assurance of the imminent triumph of light over darkness, justice over injustice, happiness over despondency, prosperity over poverty, peace over chaos and unity over division under a new leadership that truly cares for the people.

“Moreover, the death and triumph of the Lord Jesus from the shackles of dead, denotes the mercies of God in redeeming the sinful world as well as demonstrates His love for mankind and readiness to bring solution to our individual and collective challenges when we put our trust in Him.

“It is therefore time for us as a people to put aside all parochial differences and rekindle the virtues of love, forgiveness, piety, honesty, mutual respect, regard to rules as well as industry and resilience for which we are known all over the world.

“We must begin to look after one another, irrespective of social, ethnic, religious and political differences so as to foster the national rebirth which we all yearn for.”

OMO-AGEGE AND HIS CATALOGUE OF LIES, DECEIT; HAS NOTHING TO OFFER DELTANS – PDP

Press Statement 15th April, 2022

The Delta State Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has dismissed the Thursday, April 14, 2023 Delta 2023 Governorship declaration speech of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as a catalogue of lies and deceits.

PDP in a swift reaction described the Orogun politician, as an unserious pretender, with nothing to offer Deltans, except to tell them to continue praising President Mohammadu Buhari for his own political good fortune in becoming Deputy Senate President.

A statement by Delta PDP Publicity Secretary, Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza noted that while Omo-Agege’s entry into the Delta Governorship race has at least given the APC in the State some undeserved attention as a kind of political nomenclature, it has nevertheless, increased appetite and heightened the resolve of the PDP, more than ever before, to now intensify its already formidable efforts towards securing resounding victory in the 2023 Delta Governorship polls.

The statement reads: “The Delta PDP watched in utter amazement and tasteless disgust, as the Deputy Senate President of the Nigerian Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, in what he described as a declaration speech for the 2023 Governorship of Delta State, under his party, APC, on Thursday, April 14, 2022, reeled out lies upon lies one after the other, with deceitful political cunning before Deltans and the world.

“We watched aghast, as Omo-Agege literally brought great dishonour and unpardonable disrepute upon the hallowed reverence and integrity of the Senate as the citadel of our democracy, where he superintends as number two man, as he dropped lie upon lie from his mouth and with a straight face, to the shame of many Deltans watching and the chagrin of discerning Nigerians, who observed this shallow brand of politics that impugned harshly on our intelligence and sensibilities.

“Anyways, we were not surprised that most politicians who can look you straight in the face, lie effortlessly through their teeth, and commit all manner of moral and existential misdemeanors that tarnish even on the sacred authority of the positions and status they occupy, are the ones who get national, presidential pardon and are elevated to heights of political authority, in this APC-led administration.

“Of course, we all remember how the then-Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial zone in the last Senate session, was linked to a shameful and brazen invasion of the Senate chambers by unknown hoodlums, which led to the “Mace grabbing” saga, on the very day that debate was slated and signatories were even supposed to be taken, to commence impeachment proceedings on the President. But plenary could not commence without the Mace and the matter subsequently frizzled away naturally.

“All accusing fingers of complicity pointed at the Delta Central Senator, as the mastermind of the sordid Senate invasion and Mace grabbing episode.

The Senator was then elevated to the position of Deputy Senate President in the next dispensation, allegedly in recognition of the incident on that fateful day when the Senate chambers was invaded, the Mace was carted away in bandit-like style and impeachment proceedings against the President, as well as other matters, could not be tabled.

Of course, without prejudice to the final declaration of the court, Nigerians and indeed Deltans have not forgotten and will never forget. The shame and disgrace of that gory and gang style affront on our democracy still hangs over us and the association with the moniker “Mace grabber”, will always be the first impression and perception, rightly or wrongly glued and attached to any Deltan from that shameful episode, who aspires to become Governor of our great and nationally respected State.

“So, we are not in the least, disturbed by the lies which poured forth with glib oratory in that watery declaration speech and we will not join issues with him for the simple fact that we intend to figuratively keep our gun powder dry and instead, encourage our aspirants who have declared their guber ambitions, to continue to engage Deltans with our dedicated concentration on promoting and informing our people on how to deliver democracy dividends to them, as contained in the comprehensively packaged developmental agenda of our distinguished aspirants; an agenda which Omo-Agege, unfortunately, did not provide in his deceitful declaration.

“By the way, we watched with great laughter and pity, as Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, who quite a while ago, decamped to the APC, listened with quiet embarrassment as Omo-Agege reeled out his modest street lights and small transformers achievements, and stated categorically that, while he has accomplished so much for his people, there are however no projects and democracy dividends to show in the eight years of PDP rule in Delta North, especially in Aniocha, Oshimili and  Ndokwa; a period out of which Peter Nwaoboshi was the Delta North PDP Senator for Six years.

So, is Omo-Agege directly addressing Nwaoboshi, who was the powerful Chairman of, the Senate Committee on Niger Delta and NDDC, as a failure? Your guess is as good as ours.

“Interestingly too, we have read some APC social media hacks gloating about the “crowd” that turned out for the Omo-Agege:s declaration, but we know for sure that the mammoth crowd at the ‘High Voltage’ Mega Rally that overwhelmed Ughelli township stadium, to welcome Barr. Jaro Egbo, one of Omo-Agege’s closest ally, back to PDP, was more massive than the few hundreds that gathered at FUPRE, in Warri for a whole DSP.

“As for Senator Omo-Agege’s brazen lies that the Okowa administration has not created jobs for the youths or done projects in Delta, we would have loved to inform Senator Omo-Agege that in the last six years of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s administration, more than 200,000 youths, including over 4,000 from Omo-Agege’s own LGA, have been trained and empowered and are now proud independent entrepreneurs and job creators. More will be created before the end of the tenure.

“We would also like to inform Senator Omo-Agege that legacy projects have been delivered in the area of education where he slammed Isoko people, by  flippantly describing their newly upgraded University and pride of Isokoland, as ‘glorified secondary school”. The fact is that the institution has not only already admitted thousands of students which include students from Omo-Agege’s village and LGA, but has been referenced as a shining example of how postmodern academic institutions can be administered in accordance with best global practices.

“Also Omo-Agege needs to be informed that the Okowa administration, from available records, has constructed over 1,500 kilometers of roads and over 1,000 kilometers of line drainages, including the famous stormwater drainage projects to tackle flooding in Asaba, Okpanam, and the Warri, Effurun axis and these have been widely reported and are in the public domain. It is on record that as of today, there is no Local Government in Delta State where the outstanding legacy projects footprints of the Okowa administration have not been planted.

“So when next Senator Omo-Agege comes out with his avalanche of lies and deceitful campaign rhetoric because he wants to be Governor at all cost, the facts will always challenge his lies and speak for themselves. Deltans are wiser and know the truth.

“On a final note, Senator Omo-Agege needs to be reminded, as a matter of serious consideration, that he has already committed his first irredeemable mistake by vowing and ranting that “he will chase away the Okowa-led PDP administration in Delta State” (his own words).

Now, unless we are missing something, or maybe Omo-Agege is living in a different time zone, how exactly is he going to do that, when Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s tenure will end in 2023? Or perhaps is there going to be another similar “Mace-grabbing” invasion of Osadebe House before May 29, 2023? Nothing is beyond these desperate people at all.

“In any case, however, let us sound it loud and clear that the PDP is very ready and prepared to meet whoever the opposition throws up as their candidate in the Delta 2023 Governorship election. We are very organized, we are United and we are very ready. PDP is Delta and Delta is PDP. Come 2023, as it is said in our street parlance, “Ovie Omo-Agege, APC and their co-travelers go collect again, but this time dem go collect wótówótó.”

End of discussion.

According to the site Engineer, Engr. Austin Azih, they have achieved one point zero eight kilometers of the specified drains, and they are introducing culverts where they are needed. Box covers are being constructed at the river to carry the bridge head, blinding has been done with headwall to increase the height of the bridge, and they are still pumping water out, as a result of heavy underground water.

Engr. Azih said that the rain that fell on Thursday night (7/4/2022) had posed a great challenge for them, but that they have taken full control and were at the moment, tackling the problem headlong, even as he commended the Minority Leader and the people of Ugbodu for their maximum cooperation.

FG Promulgates National Strategy to Combat Wildlife and Forest Crime

The Federal Government has promulgated the National Strategy to Combat Wildlife and Forest Crime in the country.

Speaking in Abuja on Monday at the launch of the National Strategy to Combat Wildlife and Forest Crime in Nigeria (2022-2026), the Minister of Environment, Mohammed Abdullahi noted that wildlife crime syndicates are well established and organised, insisting that what is required is innovative, well-connected network across the African countries identifying legislative loopholes and weak security architecture to block seamless movement of wildlife crime and proceeds.

The Minister, while stating that traffickers have been found to stockpile pangolin scales in countries with less enforcement and weak legislation, said: “The development of Nigerian strategy on wildlife and forest crime is critical and timely.”

He added that: “Today Nigeria heed to the demand of the international community for a well-structured guidelines, legislation and punishment for wildlife traffickers and other related forest crime perpetrators.

“The goal is to free Nigeria of wildlife and forest crime, this requires enhancing institutional capacity, strengthening the legal frameworks, increase collaboration and remove crime enablers, raise awareness of wildlife crime and design alternative means of livelihood for dwellers of local communities.”

He assured that under his watch, the Ministry of Environment would provide all technical and necessary support towards the full implementation of the national strategy.

He however said the state governments are needed to adopt the strategy as part of their critical policy framework to ensure that the objective of the national strategy is achieved.

He said: “At the federal level, unparalleled attention will be focused on the implementation framework as enunciated in the Strategy. Similarly, attention will be focused in the Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analysis taking into account the highlighted political, economic, socio-cultural, technological, legal, environmental, and law enforcement indices with a view to ensuring that key players at the Federal, State and other levels do the needful and are guided and motivated appropriately to maximise the gains of the Strategy.”

He acknowledged that the landmark achievements would not have been possible without the cooperation and support of the numerous passionate partners including development partners.

The Minister of State for Environment, Sharon Ikeazor noted that Nigeria is blessed with cornucopia of natural resources which comprise of rich biodiversity ranging from aquatic to terrestrial fauna and flora.

She said: “The over 1,800 species of fauna and about 4,600 species of flora reported to be found in Nigeria are under serious multiple threats pushing them to the verge of being lost irredeemably. Wildlife and Forest crime which include the illegal taking, trading, harvesting, processing, killing, possessing and consumption of wild fauna and flora in all its habitat range – aquatic, terrestrial and arboreal has in recent years been a big challenge in the conservation of biodiversity within the nation’s boundaries.”

Also speaking at the Launch, the Country Representative of United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Oliver Stolpe said: the promulgation of this strategy comes at a critical time, stressing that over the past decade Nigeria has evolved into a primary transit hub for the trafficking of wildlife products, including ivory, pangolin scales and other protected species.

He said: “At the same time, Nigerian wildlife and forests are under severe threat, with immense amounts of rare tropical woods being illegally extracted and smuggled out of the country.”

He disclosed that: UNODC’s 2020 Wildlife Crime Report found that despite Nigeria being home to less than 0.1% of Africa’s elephant population, 23% of all elephant tusks seized globally between 2015 and 2019 had been smuggled through Nigerian ports.

“Similarly, we have seen Nigeria evolve into a major export hub for pangolin scales, with close to 60% of all seizures having either originated or been trafficked through Nigeria.”

Nigeria, South Africa renew partnership on drug war

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, and South Africa’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, popularly called HAWKS have agreed to collaborate in tackling the menace of drug trafficking between the two countries.

This was the highpoint of discussions at a virtual meeting on Monday between the Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Retd) and the National Head of South Africa’s DPCI, Lt. Gen. SG Lebeya along with members of their teams.

In his presentation, Gen. Marwa called for an operational Memorandum of Understanding, MoU that will allow both agencies share intelligence real time; engage in joint operations especially in the areas of controlled delivery; joint training and personnel exchange programmes among others.

“Drugs destroy our youths both in Nigeria and South Africa. These drugs are peddled by syndicates across our two countries, this is why we need to partner and collaborate to dismantle their evil web and stop their criminal trade”, Marwa said.

Lebeya, in his remarks, agreed on all the areas of collaboration identified by Marwa.

He said: “I’m in agreement with you on the areas you have mentioned. It’s important we collaborate on intelligence sharing real time. Exchange programme for our personnel is also another effective way of sharing knowledge.”

Other areas the meeting agreed would be worked on by the technical teams set up at the close of the discussions, include confiscation of proceeds of crime and prosecution of suspects among others.

Secretary to NDLEA, Mr. Shadrach Haruna will lead the agency’s technical team that will work with its DPCI’s counterpart, which is headed by Major Gen. Alfred Khana, Head, Serious and Organised Crime Division of HAWKS, to fine-tune details of the MoU that will be signed at a later date.

#IsokoFirst

Traditional rulers in Isoko Land have thrown their weights behind the aspiration of a formidable political leader in Isoko with wealth of experience in grassroots politics, Bashorun Askia Ogieh, in clinching the ticket to contest for the Isoko Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives.

The traditional rulers who met at the palace of His Royal Majesty, Anthony William Ovrawah Omogha1, the Odiologbo of Oleh kingdom, who is the Chairman of Isoko South Traditional Rulers Council, unanimously endorsed Bashorun Askia Ogieh, saying that his past leadership records qualified him for the job.

It was a gathering of royal fathers, and other stakeholders from different kingdoms in Isoko nation.

It is indeed a joyous day, a decision that would, according to observers, transform Isoko to her rightful place was taken.

The atmosphere was that of celebration, signifying a new dawn in Isoko nation.

While highlighting the projects he attracted to Isoko as the Executive Director, Finance and Administration, DESOPADEC, and as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, DESOPADEC, Bashorun Askia said his performances are far beyond the capability of finances that accrued to Isoko as oil bearing ethnic nationality.

If given the opportunity to represent the people of Isoko at the House of Representatives, Bashorun Askia said he shall put Isoko first in all his activities as member House of Representatives.

Lamenting the absence of Federal Government Institutions in the entire Isoko nation, Bashorun Askia said his mission to the Green Chambers is to address the decades of neglect Isoko, an oil producing ethnic nationality have since suffered from the central government.

According to him, he will lobby and rely on the advantage of his multicultural nature to secure major development projects to Isoko Nation.

Appealing to other aspirant who hails from Isoko South Local Government Area, Bashorun Askia urged them to join him to make Isoko great again. Askia also called for the unity of the good people of Isoko North and South, urging the North to support the South this time around having enjoyed the position for twenty uninterrupted years.

Bashorun Askia Ogieh, who explained one of his campaign slogans “Oscripto Oscripto”, beckoned on the royal fathers to call the entire aspirants together and advice them on the way forward, to avoid wasting hard earned monies for campaigns.

Praying for Bashorun Askia Ogieh, on behalf of all the Isoko kings, the Odiologbo of Oleh Kingdom, HRM Anthony William Ovrawah Omogha1, said “Isoko is behind you, go and represent us and bring development.”

From Proceeds, I Contribute My Quota to Upkeep of My Home, Children’s Education -YAGEPreneur Stella Awulor

-By Gertrude Onyekachukwu-UTEH:

STELLA AWULOR hails from Ika North East Local Government Area and is the CEO of AkaChukwu Fish Farm located at Egbokodo-Itsekiri in Warri South West Local Government Area. She is four years in business, having enrolled in the 2016/2017 Cycle of the Delta State Government’s Youth Agricultural Entrepreneurs Programme (YAGEP.)

In spite of the challenges of inadequate funds, she is gradually growing her business and using the proceeds to support her family. She affirmed that the training she received from the job creation programme was her greatest asset. Hear her.

“I currently have six ponds and 6,000 fish. I maintain the practice of completing two production cycles yearly because I prefer to sell my fish at table size. I plough back my profit to grow my business since I have not been able to source for funding elsewhere. The knowledge acquired during training is most valuable to me.

“The farm has been of immense benefit to me and my family. From the proceeds, I contribute my quota to the upkeep of my home and to my children’s education. The greatest challenge is the difficulty in securing loans. The initiative is commendable and should be sustained.”

GOV BELLO MATAWALLE: CADILLACS IN THE MIDST OF LACK

For a state that is plagued with extreme privation, hunger, humanitarian crisis and lack, one would have thought that Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara state will be more frugal with expenditures than he unabashedly displayed recently.

His warped decision to procure brand new cars, Cadillac 2019 Model, for 17 Emirs, 13 senior District Heads and 230 District Heads across the state, in the midst of poverty, typifies the misdirected mindset of an average Nigerian political elite in terms of priority, when faced with a swinging scale of preference.

It is on record how often the governor begrudgingly berates these traditional rulers at the slightest opportunity, accusing them of complicity in the unending fight against terrorism in the state.

In 2019, he set up a committee, headed by a retired inspector general of police, Mohammad Abubakar, to look into the remote and immediate cause of the protracted banditry in Zamfara state. Even though the committee report indicts the traditional rulers, no action has been taken against them outside the scapegoating of the only two that were deposed.

That the same Matawalle will turn around to gift the traditional rulers such expensive cars all in the name of recognising them as custodians of religion, culture and vehicles of peace, smacks of double talk and crass inconsistency.

Governor Matawalle is obviously thinking more of the monarchs than the teeming agrarian population who can no longer go to their farms until they pay protection taxes to the terrorists.

He’s not mindful of the fact that the terrorists have collected over N3 billion as a ransom from the families of abducted persons in the state, according to his committee report.

These ruling elites do not care how posterity will judge them tomorrow. If not, this type of profligacy, as witnessed in Zamfara state yesterday would have for long been abated. But let me ask a question: why are we like this?
