Russia-Ukraine War: Poland Accommodates Over 2M Refugees, Including 2,000 Fleeing Nigerians

Government of Poland has said over two million refugees from Ukraine including over two thousand Nigeria fleeing the Russia-Ukraine War have been allowed passage into Poland.

A statement on Wednesday by the Embassy of Poland in Nigeria titled: “Poland stands with Ukraine – the spirit of Polish solidarity reborn,” read: “This February Europe witnessed an unprecedented and unprovoked military attack by the Russian Federation on Ukraine. In the wake of the unjustified invasion, Poland, who is Ukraine’s next door neighbor, immediately extended a helping hand to a friendly nation in need.

“Since February 24, Poland opened its borders to over two million people fleeing Ukraine from the Russian aggression. Although most refugees are obviously Ukrainian, there are also thousands of third country nationals who found shelter in Poland. Polish authorities let in everyone irrespective of nationality, race or creed. Many of those who crossed the Ukrainian-Polish border were African nationals, including more than two thousand Nigerians.”

The statement added that: “The government of Poland went to great lengths and undertook every effort to ensure all refugees received meaningful, effective and comprehensive assistance. Meals were distributed at border crossings, transport was provided to receptive points where further assistance and help were provided by local government authorities. Moreover, country legislation was amended to cater for the needs of refugees and facilitate the provision of assistance.

“All refugees are guaranteed free of charge medical care. Poland accepts and helps terminally ill refugees, the physically challenged and orphans. Ukrainian children are given the opportunity to resume learning in Polish primary and secondary schools. All Ukrainian citizens can apply for a Polish national identity number which entitles the holder to benefit from social welfare and medical care and many other privileges on a par with Polish citizens.”

According to the statement, “Poles open their hearts and homes to refugees.
Interestingly enough, it is not only the Polish government that has provided immense assistance, but also ordinary Polish citizens contributed in a tremendous bottom-up response. Individuals, families, neighborhoods and local communities started helping on their own. They brought food, provided transport from the border to every corner of the country, set up information platforms linking up those in need with potential providers of accommodation, clothes, medicine, food etc.

“Accommodation places were created by the government and local governments, but a large number of refugees is hosted in Poles’ private houses. As more and more people arrive the numbers of those willing to help are not decreasing. On the contrary, the assistance given by regular Polish citizens is becoming more effective and structured, sensitive to the changing needs of the refugees. It is worth mentioning that Polish citizens created special assistance platforms dedicated exclusively to assisting African nationals, a large percentage of whom are Nigerians. The support offered includes, for instance, finding accommodation, translation services and free of charge legal assistance for those wishing to remain in Poland.”

The statement further revealed that the Polish government has launched a robust and comprehensive system for provision of humanitarian assistance not only in Poland but also in Ukraine, noting that: “Humanitarian convoys leave Poland for Ukraine on a daily basis transporting medicine, food, clothing and other necessities financed by the Polish government, NGOs and individuals.”

The statement added that: “Poland has contributed 500 000 CHF for humanitarian actions conducted by the International Committee of the Red Cross. All assistance sent to Ukraine is coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland and the Office of the Prime Minister.”

The statement further said: “The Polish government remains in contact with Ukrainian partners in order to provide the most effective and needed assistance.
In solidarity with other nations.”

In a bilateral level, the statement said Poland has maintained friendly diplomatic relations with Nigeria for the past 60 years, with hundreds of Nigerians choosing to study in Poland each year on a commercial basis, as well as on scholarships sponsored by the Polish government.

UNODC Begins Assessment Work on Rehab of Lagos, P/Harcourt Correctional Facilities

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has began assessment work on rehabilitation of principal correctional facilities in Port Harcourt and Lagos.

The United Nations body is targeting the rehabilitation of correctional facilities in both Part Harcourt and Lagos after such interventions were made in Maiduguri and in states in North East.

The Nigerian Correctional Service, UNODC and the Government of Germany have joined forces in upgrading Maiduguri Maximum Security Custodial Centre Centre in continuation of the 2021 phase I project: “Strengthening the Capacity of the Nigerian Correctional Service to Effectively Rehabilitate and Reintegrate Prisoners Held for an (Alleged) Association with Boko Haram.”

Since the launch of the project, prison staff working at the Centre have received extensive training on the Nelson Mandela Rules, on dynamic security management as well as on integrating sports into a holistic rehabilitation programme. In addition, extensive infrastructural improvements have been made in order to enable the Centre to provide a far more sophisticated, diverse and eventually effective offer of recreational, vocational and educational services.

At the handing over of the Phase I of the Improved Infrastructure within the Correctional Centre on Tuesday were senior representatives of the Nigerian Correctional Service, the Borno State Government, representatives of the Security Services and the United Nations.

The infrastructural improvements are: Improved access to light and water for inmates and staff, through the provision of installation of eco-friendly solar energy sources to supplement the current prison electrical system with up to 72 hours of power reserve; Improved access to vocational skill development opportunities by inmates through the transformation of existing facilities into two functional vocational training workshops which will be fully equipped during phase II; Improved access to education through the refurbishment of the classroom and the provision of standard educational materials; and Improved mental and physical health and well-being of prisoners through the constructions of extensive new sports facilities, including football, volleyball and badminton pitches and the provision of the respective sports equipment.

A statement by UNODC on Tuesday said, under its second phase the project will further upgrade the vocational training facilities and workshops as well as renovate the the living quarters of staff of the NCoS Deradicalization Programme.

The statement noted that the DERAD Programme team in Maiduguri consists of specialized employees, including psychologists, social workers, sport-instructors, art-therapists, work-instructors, and spiritual caretakers. They are deployed to Maiduguri MSCC with the primary task of supporting the rehabilitation and reintegration of those inmates associated or allegedly associated with Boko Haram.

The statement further revealed that “with the support of the Government of the United States, UNODC has been able to further expand its approach to enhancing the rehabilitation and reintegration capabilities of the Nigeria Correctional Service across several other major correctional facilities in the North East.

“Further assessments are ongoing aimed to determine related needs of the principal correctional facilities in Porth Harcourt and Lagos.

“These efforts complement the already ongoing work of UNODC in partnership with UNFPA and UNAIDS aimed to improve the access of prisoners, in particular women and girls, to health services, including HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care.”

The statement further read that: “As Federal and State Government, civil society and international development partners continue to work towards putting an end to more than ten years of conflict in North East Nigeria, the role of the Nigerian Correctional Service has rarely, if ever, been the focus of attention. Despite its critical role in rehabilitating offenders, including those who perpetuated acts of terrorism, only limited resources have been invested both by Government and its partners. And yet, the ultimate objective of imprisonment, namely to protect society against crime and terrorism, can only be achieved if the period of imprisonment is used to ensure that offenders are both able to support themselves and willing to lead a law-abiding life upon release.”

Insecurity: EU delivers 30 boats, forensic equipment to Nigeria, others

The European Union is to deliver an array of security hardware including 30 rigid-hull inflatable boats and forensic equipment to the Economic Community of West African States to tackle maritime crime and other security challenges in West Africa.

The issue of piracy has become a big issue on the Gulf of Guinea and reduce the volume of business from Europe and other continents to the West Africa region.

The boats and other security hardware are expected to be deployed on the West Africa waterways before the end of the year as the arrangement between the EU and ECOWAS are to be concluded at the ongoing high-level maritime security seminar in Abuja.

The seminar convened by ECOWAS, under the framework of the European Union-funded Support to West Africa Integrated Maritime Security (SWAIMS) project have in attendance representatives from all member countries of the regional body.

The equipment, estimated at €5 million, is expected to help security agencies in Nigeria and 11 other coastal ECOWAS states in combating crime and criminality.

The other beneficiaries include Benin, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea-Conakry, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Senegal and Togo.

The Head of ECOWAS’ Regional Security Division, Col Abdourahmane Dieng, noted that maritime insecurity has long been one of the most persistent and intractable threats to maritime communities and economic prosperity in West Africa.

According to him, turning the tide against maritime insecurity is a collaborative effort that no single country or region can tackle alone.

He said, “For this reason, ECOWAS, in conjunction with the Economic Community of Central African States formulated the Yaoundé Code of Conduct as a foundation for broad-based regional maritime security along the entire Gulf of Guinea.

“Cognisant of this problem and its ramifications well beyond West Africa, ECOWAS launched its Integrated Maritime Strategy in 2014 with parameters for the development of the blue economy premised upon a coherent security framework.”

The EU Senior Coordinator for the Gulf of Guinea, Amb Nicolas Martinez, said the EU is a committed partner to the Gulf of Guinea region and would continue to provide extensive and targeted assistance to strengthen the critical features of the Yaoundé security architecture while cementing the long-standing relationship between ECOWAS and the EU.

The SWAIMS Team Leader, Dr Axel Klein, explained that the boats and forensic equipment will be supplied by Portugal’s Camões working closely with the Portuguese Navy, which would also provide related training and maintenance.

“In financial terms, the delivery of RHIBs and forensic equipment worth more than €5 million is the most significant component of the SWAIMS project,” he explained.

Besides Camões, other SWAIMS implementing partners are Institut de sécurité maritime interregional in Côte d’Ivoire, Regional Maritime University in Ghana, ECOWAS’ Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

The boats and equipment which are expected to significantly enhance the capacity of beneficiary countries to enforce the rule of law in their territorial waters and adjoining exclusive economic zones will be supplied by 2024.

ANAMBRA: EFCC May Declare Obiano’s Chief Of Staff, Primus Odili Wanted

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been compiling reports of alleged mismanagement of public funds by the immediate past Chief of Staff to Ex-governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State, Mr. Odili and could pick him up anytime soon, credible sources in the Commission had alleged.

Mr. Odili who was said to have disappeared from the public since his principal handed over power, is reportedly eyeing a Senatorial ambition in the State.

This was revealed by impeccable sources in the Commission who pleaded anonimity because they were not authorised to speak on the matter.

According to the EFCC’s sources, based on reports and documents obtained from Government House Awka, office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), Bank details and witnesses’ accounts, Mr. Odili has a big case to answer.

The sources said the sins of Mr. Odili include extortion at Onitsha Bridge Head Market where he was said to have forceful obtained N25 million from drug traders monthly from each line, thirty five lines each for six years.

It was also alleged that he closed shops of traders using imposed caretaker leadership if any market line refused to pay and when the line paid eventually, he would add N5 million fine for failing to pay on time.

Mr. Odili, it was alleged, diverted COVID 19 cheques donated by individuals and private sectors to the tune of N11.7 billion and converted to foreign accounts for personal use.

The Chief of Staff to Ex-governor was alleged to have purchased properties abroad under the guise of foreign business trips for Anambra State government to the tune of $350 million.

He allegedly collected ten percent kick back from construction firms in Anambra running into N 5.8 billion.

Mr. Odili allegedly collected monthly returns from political appointees and Transition Committee members of the twenty-one Local Government Areas for seven years.

He was alleged to have also diverted budget allocations for Government Hours and Governor’s Lodge for five years.

The Commission’s finding was said to be very shocking, especially how the man missused his sensitive position to carry out certain financial transactions which undermined public interest.

It was also revealed that the negligence, carelessness and questionable activities of Mr. Odili as the Chief of Staff undermined his Principal’s administion.

The anticorruption agency, according to the sources, had therefore claimed that this was why Mr. Odili disappeared and abandoned his Principal when he (Obiano) was arrested.

THE SERMON AND SALVO OF SHEIKH KHALID

There’s no denying the fact that hypocrisy, political myopia and deception are walking on all four in Nigeria today.

The recent sack of Imam Sheikh Nuru Khalid by the management of the Friday mosque at the Legislative Quarters, Apo-Abuja laid credence to this. Sheikh Khalid did not sound esoteric in his sermon. He was speaking the mind of most Nigerians about the present hydra-headed security challenges facing the nation and the need for the government of the day to double its efforts at combating it.

But because we are a nation that likes playing the ostrich even in serious matters of life and death, the melody of truth often sounds like a cacophony of disturbing noises in our heads. And this is rather unfortunate.

The fact that such high handedness can still be dished out to a clergyman performing an ecclesiastical duty by speaking truth to power speaks volumes of our reverse religiosity and the prevalence of pretence within the circle of religious laity in our clime. And this is disconcerting.

Some argued that the “Digital Imam”, as the Sheikh is fondly called, should be left to the whims and caprices of his employers who can hire and fire at will. And that the mosque is a place of worship and not a place to fire political shots. But these are the same people that will still turn around tomorrow to blame religious leaders for the decay in society.

It is high time everyone speaks up. Especially at a time when death has become so cheap and common. A time when our collective expectation from the leviathan remains unfulfilled and campaign promises broken like a crayon.

In a nation where hitherto volatile and vociferous activists become quiet in the face of helplessness, all in reverence to an unperturbed paymaster, the likes of Imam Nuru Khalid become the collective conscience and voice of reason in a predominantly “unreasonable” society. He must be revered and not vilified.

Deployment of ICT in Border is Inevitable – Acting Comptroller General of Immigration

The Acting Comptroller General of Immigration, Isah Idris has said that the deployment of ICT solutions in border security has become inevitable for the country and called for enhanced funding.

He said there is urgent need for some deliberate actions to improve the current security architecture across the nation’s Blue Borders.

He made the call during a working visit to the Service’s Blue Border Formations in Oron and Ibaka areas of Akwa Ibom State.

Idris maintained that the rising volume of migratory activities along the nation’s international waterways measuring over 853 kilometres requires that a closer attention is devoted to the sector for improved surveillance.

He noted that the waterways of Oron and Ibaka areas for instance, are accessible to countries such as Mali, Benin, Togo, Ghana and Cameroon among others and so concerted efforts should be made to equip all the agencies along that corridor for good security cover.

A statement on Saturday by the spokesman of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Amos Okpu said during the visit, the Acting Comptroller General paid courtesy visits to the traditional institutions in the Border communities where he solicited for their cooperation especially in information sharing to ensure effective border security.

At the palace of the paramount ruler of the Oron nation, His Royal Majesty Odiong Edet Akan, the Acting Comptroller General stated that: “We have come to realize that no security/military agency can achieve enduring peace and order anywhere in the country without the partnership of the traditional rulers and members of the local communities.”

He recalled that the traditional rulers had played great roles in the nation’s security arrangement during the pre and post-colonial eras and called for a re-visit of the roles of traditional rulers in the nation’s security architecture.

Speaking earlier the paramount ruler of the Oron nation, stated that members of his communities have been and will continue to be very supportive to the Immigration Service and called for sustenance of the existing relationship.

Idris later proceeded to Ibaka Control Post where he inspected the operational areas and a Jetty under construction.

He said that when completed the Jetty will impact positively on operational activities at the Control and urged the personnel to continue to demonstrate strong commitment to duty.

He thereafter paid a courtesy visit to the palace of the paramount rule of Mbo local government area, His Royal Majesty Ogwong Okon Asukwo Abang. The royal father assured of the support of his subjects to the Immigration Service and called on government to invest more on maritime security.

An interesting outcome of the visit to the Blue Border areas of Akwa Ibom State was the promise made by the Acting Comptroller General that the two Control Posts of Oron and Ibaka would be included in the eBorder project of the Service shortly.

He noted that when this is achieved the two locations would be connected to the Command and Control Centre at the Service Headquarters real time and online, for effective surveillance and monitoring of all movements and activities in the areas.

Tambuwal Denies Diversion Of N189 Billion By Sokoto Government

SOKOTO State Governor, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal has denied the alleged diversion of N189 billion by the State Government.

The governor, who in a press statement by his spokesman, Muhammad Bello, alleged that the media report is an orchestrated effort by his political traduces to taint his reputation.

The signed statement by Bello on Friday read: “Our attention has been drawn to reckless and provoking reports by some online new media about alleged diversion of N189 Billion by the Sokoto State Government. The reports cited a so-called EFCC interim report on Sokoto State. These media reports are false in all material particulars and should be completely disregarded.

“We alert the public that these media reports are products of orchestrated efforts by political hacks to taint the reputation of Governor Aminu Tambuwal, who is a frontline aspirant for 2023 PDP Presidential ticket. The Government of Sokoto State has established deserved reputation as the champion of budget transparency, fiscal responsibility, and open governance. We have subscribed to the Open Government Partnership (OGP).”

Bello added that: “It is noteworthy that in December 2020, the World Bank rated the Sokoto State as number one state in Nigeria in fiscal transparency as a recognition of Governor Tambuwal’s unflinching commitment to the implementation of the States Fiscal Transparency, Accountability and Sustainability (SFTAS) and for efforts to champion budgetary transparency in Nigeria. For this commitment, Sokoto State has received up to $34.1million as special grant from the World Bank.”

The spokesman said: “Governor Tambuwal in pursuit of fiscal responsibility and anticorruption in management of public finance in Sokoto State has created the Sokoto State Bureau of Public Procurement and Private Partnership and Fiscal Responsibility Commission to review and investigate all public expenditure. The agencies are independent agencies established by law. To further strengthen vertical and horizontal agencies of accountability in the state, Governor Tambuwal has signed law granting the Offices of Auditor General in the state and local government councils in Sokoto State operational independence to investigate all records of public expenditure in Sokoto State.”

Bello claimed that: “Nigerians know Governor Tambuwal as a champion of due process and fiscal probity, who as the Speaker of the House of Representative received a clean bill of health from all anticorruption agencies. He has been an inspiration for his commitment to prudent and honest management of public finance. He has continued to run an open government in Sokoto State. In line with his high standard of probity and open government, Governor Tambuwal invites any person who cares to look into the records of the state and to request the report of the Sokoto State Bureau of Public Procurement and Private Partnership on all public expenditures in Sokoto State.”

He said: “We assure Nigerians that we are ready with all relevant documents to challenge any report from the EFCC or any other anticorruption body on the public finances of Sokoto State. We are confident of Governor Tambuwal’s trail-blazing legacy of fiscal responsibility and open governance. We welcome the strictest scrutiny from any Nigerian or group interested in the affairs of Sokoto State.

“In the meantime, we urge the public to disregard these malicious attacks on Governor Tambuwal and desperate efforts to derail the Tambuwal mission to offer Nigeria an open and transformative governance.”

UNODC hosted training sessions for defense attorneys, prosecutors, judges and police officers in North East and North Central Nigeria to emphasize best practices in securing a crime scene, designing and implementing evidentiary handling procedure, and maintaining evidentiary integrity.

-By Gertrude Onyekachukwu-UTEH:

ODU UNUAKPOREGBETAYE SUNDAY began his farm business as a local farmer before his enrolment in the Delta State Government’s Youth Agricultural Entrepreneurs Programme (YAGEP) in the 2017/2018 cycle. He hails from Okpe Local Government Area and is the Chairman of Odu Fish Farm Multipurpose Cooperative Society Ltd, a subsidiary of Odu Technical Resources Enterprise located at YAGEP Fish Farm, Ugbokodo-Okpe.

Though his initial start-up ponds collapsed, he was not discouraged. Rather, through personal effort, he developed new ponds and used his start-up fish feeds to stock fresh juveniles. At present, he has 16 giant earthen fish ponds within the cluster. He co-opted other fish farmers to register his farm as a cooperative society. Hear him.

“The job creation YAGEP is a commendable agricultural policy any government can make in the interest of its youths, especially those who are success driven. The two fish ponds allocated to me collapsed, but I saw the challenge as an opportunity to develop mine. I developed seven 20 X 40 feet ponds; four 50 X 50 ponds, and five 30 X 40 ponds.

“I used the feeds given to me as a start-up to feed the fish I bought when my ponds collapsed. The demand for fish is high. Therefore, more youths should be engaged in Fish Production to meet market demand for fish. I have also diversified into cassava farming and building technology.

“Recently I was one of the outstanding YAGEP beneficiaries that received a cash award of ₦.5M from Governor Okowa. This will grow our enterprises and in the long run, help the Governor realize his overall objective of initiating YAGEP.”

Oniyangi, gave this advice in Abuja while celebrating his retirement from the Bench, even as he suggested that the nation should consider establishing an appellate court in every state in the country to reduce the volume of pending cases.

Justice Oniyangi, who was until who until his retirement the Judge at the Appeal Court, Jos retired after twenty-six years on the bench.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Oniyangi said: “Speedy dispensation of justice as far as I am concerned and my experience on the bench, on most occasions, the court sits either 9am or just a little after 9am. But if case A is called, you either find the prosecutor or the defense counsel telling the Judge my witnesses are not ready. The Judge will never say I am not ready to handle this matter rather you would hear from the prosecutor or defense counsel saying; give us another date, or throw away the matter. The Judge will still insist and say let’s give them some time. So the court is always ready. I am not beating my chest for everybody but you will find out that 98% of these courts sit on time.

“The Supreme Court has a number of cases but my question is why is the Supreme Court not decentralized in every geopolitical zone? The headquarter can be here in Abuja as well as the Chief Justice of Nigeria but when that division is created, the Justices of the Supreme Court sent there will attend to matters in that geopolitical zone but it will be the same one Supreme Court, no division. The Justices will just be assigned to do the job there and decongest the headquarters in Abuja.

“Abuja is full to the brim, cases are pending. The Justices are trying but the number of Justices cannot cope with the pressure of jobs going on.”

Justice Oniyangi further advocated for the establishment of an appellate court in all the states of the Federation as one of the solutions to ensure speedy dispensation of justice.

He said this would have a wider implication, as it saves time and man-hour if cases are disposed of at that level state by state rather than moving to other states.

He lamented that: “The Court of Appeal is short of manpower. They need more Justices in the court. In my personal view, every state should have a division of the Court of Appeal so that they can face the issue and problem happening in every case rather than the present number that we have. It will reduce congestion or risk on the road.”

He also outlined some of the challenges confronting dispensation of justice in the country to include low fundings of the judiciary and poor infrastructure among other factors.

He said: “The workload for the Judges in Nigeria is too much in most cases. Unlike the advanced countries, a judge will conduct pre-trial, after scrutinizing the file, he passes it to the registry, then that file will pass to the Judge who will carry out the trial and that is the only file he will have pending. Here, like the high court, we don’t have specialized courts and that is why you find Judges doing criminal matters, civil matters, and commercial matters. A Judge may be assigned up to 1000 files in a court which is on every subject; commercial, criminal, civil.

“Then, we have the manual recording. The National Judiciary Council Institute has been trying its best to make sure that all courts are equipped with recording machines but the question is, where is the fund? I have heard heads of courts lamenting budget issues.

“Monies are not adequately provided for them to acquire these equipment to enhance productivity and you find most courts writing with long hands. If not when the issue of COVID-19 that everything started going virtual. You cannot compare the Court of Appeal with Trial Court. The Trial Court has the bulk of the work.”

Okowa, Prevail On Isoko House Of Rep Aspirants, Save Unity Of Isoko People – Iduh Amadhe

Immediate past President General of Isoko Development Union (IDU), High Chief Iduh Amadhe, has implored the Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, to prevail on any House of Representatives aspirant from Isoko north local government area in the coming election to jettison their move in line with an existing understanding of rotation and to protect the unity of the Isoko people.

Speaking to newsmen at his home in Oleh, the administrative headquarter of Isoko south, Chief Amadhe noted that the House of Representatives seat belongs to the Isoko people of Isoko north and south local government areas.

He pointed out that at the inception of the current Republic in 1999, Chief Anthony Efekodha, now a royal father from Isoko South was the first House of Representatives member for the Isoko Federal Constituency and he did just one term.

Thereafter, according to Chief Amadhe, “Hon Leo Ogor from Isoko North took over on the insistence that ‘the mother’s breast does not belong to one person or section’.

That is how Leo went in and did four tenures at a stretch but in 2019, there was serious uproar in the land that he had not only stayed long enough, but also for the sake of equity, fairness and justice, the House of Representatives seat should revert back to Isoko South.”

Chief Iduh stated further that “after the intervention of the state Governor and some Isoko leaders, it was agreed then that Hon Leo Ogor should do a last tenure despite his health challenges so that in 2023, an Isoko South candidate can take over”.

“This position was then championed by so many Isoko leaders including Chiefs Denis Etaluku, Mike Usige and Hon. Johnson Erijo who was Leo’s Campaign Director General.

Again, this resolution according to Chief Iduh was further affirmed at a meeting in Hon Erijo’s house where Leo was captured in a video that has now gone viral, stating that ‘the next House of Representatives member will come from Isoko South because what is fair is fair”.

However, Chief Iduh who is now a patron of the IDU posited that “now that it is clearly the turn of Isoko South to produce the HOR member for the Isoko Federal Constituency, it is surprising to Isoko political and cultural leaders including traditional rulers who prayed for Leo Ogor at the Isoko House at that time that he now wants to hand over to one of his aides from the same Isoko North”.

This move, Chief Iduh maintained “will further divide the Isoko nation and promote political and socio-cultural enmity, disharmony and disunity among a people of common heritage”.

Insisting that as an Isoko cultural leader, it behoves on him to stand with the truth at all times, Chief Iduh emphasized that Isoko as an ethnic nationality having just two local government areas with a robust political history should ordinarily not have issues in sharing or rotating what belongs to them.

Chief Iduh noted that even in IDU, the sociocultural umbrella body of the Isoko people, the rotational principles are strictly observed to ensure equity, balance and fair representation both among the Clans and between the two local government areas.

For instance, according to Chief Iduh, while in office, his first Vice President and Secretary were from Ozoro and Ofagbe respectively in Isoko North.

At the end of his tenure, the President General’s position went to Isoko north including the second Vice President General and Assistant Secretary who are from Oyede and Emevor respectively.

He then identified political rascality, greed and lack of genuine drive for unity, peaceful coexistence and equity for the current scenario.

He added that “it is quite unfair, dictatorial and very undemocratic for a single individual to unilaterally foist his choice candidate on the Isoko people despite an undertaking, existing understanding and the overall interest of the entire Isoko nation.

While affirming that his stand on the matter is not to push forward any particular candidate, Chief Iduh said all that he stands for is that “it is now the turn of Isoko South and whoever picks the ticket here should go to Abuja mainly to project and protect the interest of the Isoko nation”.

He added that he is trusting Governor Okowa “to do the needful on this matter to prevent the looming danger if the ugly trend is not arrested quickly”.

He also charged all political pressure groups across Isoko land and well-meaning Isoko leaders particularly in Isoko North to speak out and prevail on their son not to go ahead with “the brazen affront on the intelligence of the Isoko people in the name of politics”.

The Chief then urged the people to recall that even in PDP and APC, the two leading political parties in the country, zoning is well entrenched and respected both in the parties offices as well as all tiers of elections.

UN seeks stronger media partnership to achieve SDGs, advocates for factual, evidence-based reporting

The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Nigeria, Matthias Schmale has called for a stronger partnership with the media in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He said the would enhance achieving the Agenda 2030 for sustainable development in Nigeria.

Schmale said: “Media play a critical role in achieving Agenda 2030, which includes ensuring citizens are well-informed to enable them to form opinions based on facts. Factual and evidence-based reporting is critical at this period of fake news.

The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Nigeria made the call at the closing of a two-day training of journalists on SDGs, and developing a Nigeria Network of Sustainable Development Journalists, organized by the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Lagos, in collaboration with Media Awareness and Information For All Network (MAIN), and held on 24 – 25 March at the UN House Abuja.

According to him, the media, need to help spread factual information about the SDGs and to hold government and institutions accountable for what is being done and the progress being achieved.

Schmale further explained that the “UN is supporting the government of Nigeria to address its challenges and to realise its development aspirations and the transformative change. They cannot do it alone. The United Nations also cannot do it alone. We need stronger partnerships, and the media fit well into this partnership.”

On gender equality, the Resident Coordinator called on the media to intensify profiling successful Nigerian women to motivate other women and girls to break the gender barriers. “Nigeria has the first African woman to lead the WTO; my boss, the Deputy Secretary General of the UN, Amina Mohammed is also a Nigerian woman. A third of CEOs of Banks are women and Nigeria has the highest number of female representatives on Boards of private sector organisations in Africa. Media need to do more in profiling many successful Nigerian women for the purpose of learning and motivating other women.” He observed.

Schmale added that the United Nations was in the middle of developing, with the government of Nigeria, a Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for the next five years.

In his presentation titled, “Gender Equality And SDGs: The Role of Journalists in ensuring progress”, the Deputy Country Representative of UN Women to Nigeria and the ECOWAS, Lansana Wonneh, emphasized that unless progress on gender equality was accelerated, the global community would fail to achieve the SDGs.

According to him, @Gender equality is a right and at the centre of the SDGs. Fulfilling this right is the best chance to address economic crisis; lack of health care; climate change; violence against women; and escalating conflicts.” He said and called on journalists to amplify the voice of vulnerable women in their reportage, while ensuring accountability in the commitments made to women through appropriate budget allocations and delivery of services.

He added: “Acknowledge women’s voice so that other women get motivation and support. Make the society aware of women’s right to equal access to opportunities and provide information and interpretations to policy makers for formulating policies on local gender issues.”

Earlier, the Senior Technical Adviser in the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, Dr. Bala Yunusa, noted that the SDGs could not be achieved with stand-alone programmes and projects. “They must be carefully integrated into national and sub-national policies and development plans.” He explained.

Special Adviser on SDGs to the FCT Minister of State, Hajiya Ahmed, in her remarks commended UNIC and MAIN for organising the media training. She was represented by Mr. Ona Ndubuisi.

The Chairman of MAIN, Prof. Lai Oso, in his overview of the training, noted that none of the 17 goals of SDG could be achieved without active cultivation and cooperation of the media. The media, according to him, have become central to the initiation, execution and public support of any policy and programme of development.

He said: “It is in realization of the importance of communication and the media that the need to train, equip and deploy an informed media to achieve SDG goals has become imperative.”

The participants were decorated with the ‘SDGs-Wheel’ pins by the Resident Coordinator who designated them as ‘Champions of SDGs’, to further strengthen their commitment to promoting the SDGs and sustainability journalism.

The project, “Training of journalists on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and developing a Nigeria Network of Sustainable Development Journalists”, was aimed at deepening journalists’ knowledge of sustainable development, to engender high-quality journalistic practice that holds government accountable to Agenda 2030.
It was also aimed to strengthen the capacity of participants in sustainability reporting with emphasis on economic, social and environmental dimensions; to improve participants’ knowledge of the role of women in sustainable development; and to establish a “Nigeria Network of Sustainable Development Journalists” that will engage regularly to report and view development initiatives in Nigeria from the prism of sustainability.

The training of journalists on SDGs in the six geo-political zones of Nigeria will move to Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State on 6 – 7 April; Enugu, Enugu State on 28 – 29 April and end at Lagos on 10 – 11 May 2022.

BUNI: THE TRIUMPHANT ENTRY AND GLORIOUS EXIT OF A CHAIRMAN

-By Mamman MOHAMMED:

He is either in white or blue colours. These are his two favourite colours. White represents peace while blue represents love. The two colours incidentally reflect the true character of Mai Mala Buni, the Yobe state Governor, a man of peace and love.

Coincidentally, the two colours in the military circle are associated with the Navy. While the Navy is known for its sea force, Buni has proved himself to be a sea force political General, with an uncommon expertise and tactics in overcoming political wild storms, the murky political waters and the turbulent political waves..

Calm, calculated and soft-spoken, Buni approaches every political complication and problem with measured steps to disable the compass of adversaries, rendering ill-motivated path finders of his direction and movements ineffective and clueless. Buni is blessed with the patience to listen, critically observe and analyze situations. He is never in a haste to respond to criticisms. Thus, leaving his adversaries in bewilderment and setting more confusion into their minds. While awaiting his reaction on certain issues or attacks, he moves ahead like the submarine beneath the sea, only to emerge far ahead and successful.

The extraordinarily humble and generous character of Governor Mai Mala Buni, has always attracted so many people to him, comprising the good, the bad and the ugly. As it is with human nature, some stick to him out of genuine love, others to get what they can, while some, to pretend to love him, get close and eventually backstab him if need be.

It is often said, if you want to test the true character of a man, give him power, knowledge and money. It reveals the true identity of human beings. In Buni, neither power nor money has changed him. He has ever remained humble, accessible, giving, sympathetic and willing to concede for peace to reign and love to thrive.

The last 34 months as a Governor and 18 months as Chairman of the All Progressives Congress Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, has revealed so many virtues of humility, tolerance, responsibility, determination and greatness in the man Mai Mala Buni.

The most trying moment of this test however came at the end of his tenure as the chairman of the Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee of the APC, when unsubstantiated accusations were thrown at him in a bid to provoke him to throw away the bath water along with the baby and to depict him as a failure, and/or for the party to go back to square one, just some few months to the 2023 general election. But Governor Mai Mala Buni resisted and refused to be provoked and never responded to any of the vituperations. He first called me as his spokesman advising me not to respond to the attacks, then followed with a directive and finally a warning never to say a word on the attacks.

I was perplexed, uncomfortable and confused, looking at the good time and energy Governor Buni had invested to rescue the APC, denying himself some comfort, sacrificing his official and personal time to the party. As a media man, l wanted the World to hear our side of the story and wondered the wisdom in him shutting me down. Until when Malam Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media, issued a statement cautioning governors and party stakeholders against backstabbing and name calling. And when finally, President Muhammadu Buhari, declared my principal, Governor Buni, as the authentic chairman to conduct the Convention, l realised the wisdom in doing much work rather than speaking too much. The maxim that “Let your action speak louder for you” readily came to mind.

For lovers of His Excellency Governor Mai Mala Buni, political pundits and adversaries, the APC National Convention, and transmission of power from the CECPC to a substantive National Working Committee, was undoubtedly peaceful and successful. It has made Buni to walk honourably and gloriously in Nigeria’s political history as attested by President Buhari who repeatedly said APC has bounced back to life courtesy of the Mai Mala Buni led Caretaker Committee.

Buhari said “I want to congratulate us all for being part of this history making event and to specially appreciate the Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee which has been on a rescue mission, under the leadership of His Excellency the Yobe state Governor, Mai Mala Buni, for successfully piloting the affairs of the party in the last 18 months and organising this Convention to elect a new National Working Committee that will take over from the Caretaker Committee.

“I am glad the party under the Caretaker Committee has bounced back to life with the reconciliation of several key and critical stakeholders and groups, who had hitherto left the party or were on the verge of leaving the party. The reconciliation process gave the aggrieved stakeholders a true sense of belonging and assurance.”

The elated President did not hide his positive thoughts about the Buni led committee, saying “it is gratifying that the party recorded massive and unprecedented defections under the Caretaker Committee administration. APC received three sitting Governors, a Deputy Governor, Senators, Members of the House of Representatives and state assemblies, and other key officials from opposition parties who defected along with Millions of their supporters. I am impressed to learn that the membership registration and revalidation exercise undertaken by the Caretaker Committee, has recorded over 41 Million members. This has proved that we are indeed Nigeria’s leading and largest political party. It also exhibits our numerical strength and the potential to win elections at all given times fairly and squarely.”

The Buni led CEPC, had among others reconciled feuding critical stakeholders, groups, camps and factions, conducted membership registration and revalidation exercise registering over 41 Million members, wooed three serving governors of Ebonyi State, His Excellency Dave Umahi, Cross River State, His Excellency Dr. Ben Ayade and Zamfara State, Alhaji Bello Mutawalle along with Millions of their supporters into the party.

Governor Buni with a charming informed the National Convention delegates, observers and onlookers “I am glad to add that the fortunes of the party were further enriched with the defection of former Speakers of the House of Representatives, former PDP national chairman, member PDP Board of Trustees, several Distinguished Senators and Honourable members of the House of Representatives and state assemblies, and several other heavyweights cutting across all the geo-political zones of the country.

“Let me reassure those of you whose defections are being challenged in the courts that you have nothing to fear because your defections did not contravene any law. You will by the grace of God emerge successful and victorious in the superior courts at the end of these litigations. Your wise decision to join APC along with Millions of your supporters shall never be in vain.”

The purchase of the APC National Secretariat ‘Buhari House’ is no doubt a monumental achievement by the CECPC as this has permanently settled the accommodation challenges of the nine year old political party when compared to 23 years and above political parties with lots of resources but yet to own permanent Secretariats.

The engagement of women, Youth and People Living With Disabilities by the Buni led CECPC in the affairs of the party, makes APC different in terms of all inclusiveness in Nigeria’s democracy.

And not to be forgotten is the successful conduct of the ward, local and state Congresses, as well as the amendment of the party’s constitution. This provides a solid, stable and unwavering platform for the just concluded peaceful, successful, rewarding and fruitful National Convention of Africa’s largest political party, the APC.

The ground preparation by the Buni led Committee for APC, has no doubt lessened internal problems, narrowed down animosities, resuscitated party loyalty and supremacy. Unarguably, the Abdullahi Adamu led National Working Committee has the advantage and capacity to build on these fortunes for a successful ride to victory in the 2023 general election.

Lalong: Bridging The Gap

-By Yakubu DATI:

As political activities heighten with the release of the timetable for the 2023 general elections, governance has notably slowed down across the country.

While this may be the case in some states, it is not so on the Plateau as
Governor Alert! (a name by which Gov Simon Lalong is fondly referred to by Plateau State workers after he cleared 8- 10 months outstanding salary arrears inherited from the last administration) has not shifted his focus on the goal of working for his people.

With an average monthly commitment of 2 billion naira paid to workers in the state in the last six years, the local economy has received a huge boost with the injection of more than 84 billion naira in the corresponding years of the current administration.

These payments have no doubt stimulated the economy of the state substantially and unleashed additional economic growth for the people thereby closing the gap of inequality and reducing hardship across board.

While economists are best suited to measure the accompanying leapfrog in economic activities and its concomitant boost in small and medium scale enterprise (SMSEs) along with its social impact, the effect is such that even laymen are testifying of the difference recorded.

Buoyed by passion to uplift urban and rural poor through land which is the physical bedrock for human activities, Gov Lalong is unlocking these resources for the benefit of all and sundry.

The Governor only recently assented to two critical bills on land administration on 14th July 2021 viz The Plateau State Property Land Use Charge Law 2021 and The Plateau State Geographic Information Systems (PLAGIS) Law 2021.

In the bid to unveil the benefits of these laws to the business community, the Plateau State Ministry of Lands, Survey and Town Planning organised a stakeholders engagement with support from a major German development agency, GIZ (The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH).
At the forum, Gov Lalong reiterated the subsisting 50 percent waiver on land transactions to empower the business community in the bid to promote the ease of doing business and empower the populace while the Attorney General and commissioner of justice, Chrysantus Ahmadu, xrayed the benefits of the law to the leadership of the SMSEs.

Chairman of the Plateau State Internal Revenue Service (PSIRS), Dashe Arlat, in his remarks, reaffirmed his agency’s commitment to generate N5 billion monthly as Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

On the heels of all these positives, Gov Lalong flagged-off the construction of N9.9 billion British-American Junction fly over and the dualization of 1.7 K/m road to Lamingo roundabout in Jos North LGA.

Initial announcement of this landmark legacy project was greeted with mixed reactions by those genuinely concerned about where the funding will be sourced and the opposition who are confined by the walls of pessimism they built around themselves to be blind to positive derivatives of government.

While the former became convinced about its workability and welcomed the realization of the project with a sigh of relief, the latter thought they could harm the project and finding no means of doing so, resorted to lies claiming that the 9.9 billion naira project would cost a whopping 19 billion naira!

Sonya Parker, an author, succinctly captures these naysayers in his treatise when he said, “a hater’s job is to hate you, and they stay on their job 24/7. So, if you’re expecting them to clock out, and leave you alone think again.”

Unperturbed by these opposition elements however, Gov Lalong is taking the bricks hauled at his administration and is using them to stay the course of leaving Plateau better than he met it.

Underscoring the importance of the event, is the fact that the ground-breaking ceremony was performed by the former Head of State and living legend, Gen Yakubu Gowon.

Governor of Niger State, Sani Bello, his Kwara State counterpart, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq and Edo State Governor, Godwin Obasaki represented by his Deputy, Philip Shuiabu joined other well meaning patriots to be part of history by coming to witness the event.

To overcome the stranglehold of funding, which is responsible for many abandoned projects, the Government adopted the Contractor-Financing model which tilts the process in favour of preferred bidders.

A firm, Craneburg Construction Company Ltd, armed with funding from Access Bank, easily distinguished itself amongst several bidders to emerge top.

Commissioner for Works, Pam Botmang, affirmed that the bank has mobilized the contractor and work has commenced in earnest from the preliminary works of the Right of Way from the Federal Ministry of Works, to relocation of public utilities with underpass and roundabout, slip roads and approach, as well as scarification and site clearance.

The scope of work is also huge and includes a 6 – span dual bridge of 15.0m/Span with a total length of 90m as part of the Over-Pass and erection of four retaining walls on the approaches of various lengths totaling 300m.

The contractor will also carry out earthworks with extensive filling on the bridge approaches with ramps, slip roads and underpass.

Furthermore the contractors are to build two reinforced concrete single spans of 20m length bridges along the 1.7km British American Junction to Lamingo Junction Roundabout and it is to be dualized and reconstructed with asphaltic binder and wearing coarse which will include pipe and box culverts, reinforced concrete drainages, concrete kerbs, concrete walkways and other auxiliary or ancillary works like street lights, road signages and markings, etc

As an awardee of the internationally recognised Open Governance Partnership ( OGP) the Plateau State Government is adhering to strict financial template that ensures direct disbursement from the bank to the contractor on receipts of Certificates of Valuation (CVs) certified by the Ministry and duly approved by the Governor.

The Performance Monitoring and Results Delivery Office (PMRDO) led by Noel Donjur, Chief of Staff, has put these rigourous process of transparency, accountability, citizen participation and responsiveness in place to ensure the delivery of the project on time.

Gen Yakubu Gowon, at the event, expressed satisfaction with the level of support accorded Governor Simon Lalong by Plateau people in the last six years and urged him to leave better legacies that would be emulated.

He applauded Governor Lalong for completing projects inherited from the successive administration saying continuity in governance is critical to the development of the society.

The ongoing British/American overhead bridge, for example, is another demonstration of a government in action.

While a majority of patriotic citizens welcome the construction which has commenced in earnest, the few depleting opposition elements are confronted with brickwalls in their failed bid to throw spanners in the works.

Forgetting that the Rescue administration, paid up debts incurred by the last administration including the cost for the dualization project the former governor, Jonah Jang named after himself in a purse case of a self serving attempt at self immortalisation.

The British/American Overhead Bridge which has become a nightmare to road users is a very important artery that serves the city and is an important gateway to travellers transiting the state.

It is pertinent to note that due to the insecurity created by the last administration, states like Bauchi, Gombe and others who were forced to build airports to avoiding transiting through Jos, are back to using this artery, following the restoration of peace, thus increasing the vehicular traffic.

For the purpose of emphasis, the British/American flyover with 7 km dual carriage way is contractor financed, meaning that the contractor came with a financing from a reputable bank to fund the project, similar to the model adopted by the Federal Government in financing the rail and airport projects. In simple terms, the bank is funding the contractor directly.

Gov Lalong continues to leverage on innovation to steer up development and entrepreneurship. The automation of land administration has secured land owners, attracting over 7 billion naira in mortgages during his administration.
Little wonder, Plateau youths have continued to shine on the national stage, winning laurels in their stride. At the National SMSE Awards organised by the Muhammadu Buhari administration, Jerry Mallo came tops in 2019, while Luka Bot and Mafeng won in 2020 and 2021 respectively.
Gov Lalong continues to expand the frontiers of possibilities by bridging the gap.

NIGERIAN POLITICAL PARTIES, IDEOLOGY AND POACHING

By Austen AKHAGBEME:

One of the earliest definitions of a political party I knew as a secondary school student was that of Edmund Burke, the eighteenth-century British philosopher and scholar. He defined political parties as the body of men united to promote, by their joint endeavour, the national interest based on a particular principle on which they all agreed.

The above definition, no matter how ” elementary” it is today, presupposes the importance and uniqueness of an agreed principle or ideology that is pivotally driving the union.

But in Nigeria today, political parties have become a mere political nest for politicians to roost while aggregating selfish plans based on primordial justification. Edmund Burke’s idea of a principled union or ideological congregation has become the exception rather than the rule.

Little wonder that the recently concluded party conventions of the two major political parties in Nigeria, APC and the PDP was a display of reckless poaching by both parties as we witnessed a lot of former PDP battle commanders becoming APC chieftains and vice-versa.

This was made possible by the inorganic nature of party formation and metamorphosis in our clime. Here, parties are not and never driven by a known and acceptable ideology but by mere sloganeering, masquerading as a party manifesto aimed aimlessly at assuring the masses of a change or a breath of fresh air.

Because the parties lack ideology, they are, therefore, borderless and fluid such that they have become the gathering of strange bedfellows and pretenders. This is the reason why a politician who lost a ticket to contest for a particular position in an election in one party can easily jump to another in search of the same ticket without a pricking conscience.

Our democracy has truly become the victim as such democratic structures, as important as political parties, becomes a mere vehicle for political mobility by political elites and their cronies.

The overall result of all these is the lack of governance, elite hypocrisy, heartless bureaucracy, greed and avarice which recently has culminated in insecurity pervading our land. If the parties do not have ideologies, how can the nation have a national philosophy? We truly still have a long way to go in Nigeria. We sure do.

NSCDC To Collaborate With US, France In Personnel Training

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) is going to collaborate with both the United States of America and France in different areas of training and manpower development aimed at repositioning it to become a world class organisation.

The Commandant General of the Corps, Dr Ahmed Audi gave this indication on Friday while playing host to two separate delegations from the U.S and France.

He expressed his readiness to enhance the capacity of his personnel through different categories of training for effective performance in different areas of the Corps’ mandates.

According to Audi, the corps which is a lead agency in the protection of critical national assets and infrastructure, disaster and crisis management, regulation of Private Guards Companies and other given ad-hoc assignments such as the Agro Rangers, counter insurgency operations among others, would perform better if there is enhanced capacity of its personnel.

He maintained that protection of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure from the nefarious activities of vandals would be better done when the Corps is equipped with state of the art surveillance equipment like surveillance cameras, utility vehicles to navigate difficult terrains, drones and tracking devices; insisting that such assistance will help the Corps to carry out diligent prosecution of its assignments.

Audi noted that training in Counter Terrorism, Counter Insurgency and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Explosives (CBRNE) accompanied with up to date simulation exercises will better reposition the NSCDC to respond more proportionately to the current asymmetric warfare affecting Nigeria.

In response, the Senior Regional Security Officer at the US Embassy, Michael Steven, appreciated the Corps over its response to security situations in the country, citing the peaceful conduct of its personnel in different national assignments in Abuja and across the country.

Steven expressed willingness to support and collaborate with NSCDC, stressing that his country has enough expertise in many areas and advised the CG to articulate the Corps areas of needs accordingly in order of priority, assuring that US will leverage on the existing relationship to assist the corps in succeeding.

In a related development, the Desk Officer, Police Cooperation, French Ministry Of Foreign Affairs, Lt Col Laurent Savio, who was on a similar visit to the CG NSCDC, said he was delighted to visit the Corps National Headquarters to further strengthen the existing ties with the Corps and to know its needs with a view to understanding the areas of possible collaboration.

He promised to assist the organization in designing and facilitating training programs and equipment that are made in France to help recalibrate and upgrade the Corps to a professional standard for optimal performance while also thanking the CG for Injecting new innovations, policies and programs that has turned around the organization in the last one year of his leadership.

The Commandant General promised to constitute a committee to interface and come up with credible training programs that will benefit the personnel and the Corps at large. The Security Attache, Verin Emmanuel, who was also in the entourage assured the Commandant General that they will continue discussions on the collaboration and fashion out better ways of maintaining the partnership.

IWD: West Africa has highest rate of maternal mortality, low girl-child education, others – Wife of ECOWAS President

Wife of President of the Economic Commission of West African States (ECOWAS), Mrs Jacqueline Brou has lamented the prevalence of high maternal mortality rate in West Africa.

She equally lamented the low levels of female education, violence against women, early marriage and female genital mutilation in the region.

Speaking in Abuja at an occasion to commemorate the International Women’s Day, IWD, Brou said the West African region is still bedeviled with the highest rate of maternal mortality, low levels of female education, violence against them, early marriage and female genital mutilation.

Brou, speaking under the theme defined by the United Nations: “equality today for a sustainable future” and the campaign themed: “BreakThe Barriers”, disclosed that because of the situation in West Africa, the commission would be taking steps to ensure that the ECOWAS Vision 2050 development process reflects and is inclusive by actively involving women and youth in the design and implementation of all ECOWAS development programmes and projects.

She notedthat the commission is duty bound to fight job segregation and break down prejudices through the provision of more employment opportunities for women and young people.

Brou advised the ECOWAS Amazons to remain steadfast, working in unity to achieve the goals of the commission which would put Africa in the right grounds.

She said: “Although International Women’s Day is celebrated every year on March 8, our celebration should not be limited to just a calendar date. Women, the pillar of any society, should be celebrated every day for their bravery, their fights, their social, economic, cultural and political achievements.

“Indeed, International Women’s Day not only provides a useful opportunity to remember that every individual has a role to play in building a more gender-balanced world, but the day is also a call to action to accelerate gender parity by challenging gender stereotypes while forging a more progressive mindset and inclusive behavior.

“The celebration of this year’s International Women’s Day 2022, under the theme defined by the United Nations “equality today for a sustainable future” and the campaign theme “BriserLesBarrières / BreakThe Barriers” must lead us to become aware of the considerable impact of prejudices on gender equality, whether conscious or unconscious. We must recognize it and denounce it. Therefore, we must break the chains of prejudices that have entangled and conditioned our lives, such as prejudices related to gender, religion, nationality, age, geography, culture… And the list goes on. These biases distort thinking, influence beliefs and undermine the development and empowerment of West African women.

She decried that: “Despite the progress made by most West African countries in terms of women’s participation in the economic and social sectors, policy-making and leadership, the region still has one of the highest rates of maternal mortality, low levels of female education, violence against them, early marriage and female genital mutilation. These factors play a major role in hindering the progress of women in the region”.

She said: “It is in this context that the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government have declared zero tolerance towards sexual and gender-based violence and the elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls in the ECOWAS region. This commitment has materialized through the adoption of a number of instruments and mechanisms by various ECOWAS entities, including the ECOWAS Gender Policy, the Gender Strategic Plan Framework, the gender, youth and childhood policies, and the Supplementary Act on equal rights between women and men for sustainable development in the ECOWAS region.

“The Commission has also taken steps to ensure that the ECOWAS Vision 2050 development process is participatory and inclusive by actively involving women and youth in the design and implementation of all ECOWAS development programs and projects.

“In addition, the Commission is committed to fighting job segregation and breaking down prejudices by providing more employment opportunities for women and young people. I dare to hope that with these important steps, we will continue to realize “The ECOWAS of the People: Peace and Prosperity for All.”

She however said: “On a personal note, I would like to express my appreciation and the opportunity to share with you these fantastic moments as part of the celebration of International Women’s Day. I gradually realized how lucky I have been for the past four years. I can proudly say that you are all like family to me and I thank you for your precious and inexhaustible trust in me. None of us has accomplished anything in isolation and the great successes and milestones of the Amazons have been the result of our mutual respect, collaboration and cooperation.”

She charged: “Amazons, never forget that you are the pride of ECOWAS, our common institution. Do not allow any prejudice to alter your vision, and trust me, I will be your advocate alongside my dear husband for even more women Commissioners, more women Directors and Heads of Division, more women in all positions. You can count on me.

In the spirit of celebration of the IWD, the ECOWAS Women’s Forum (ECOCOM Amazon), visited the Maternity Ward of Asokoro General Hospital, where they
doled out maternal equipment and kits worth US$3,500.

During the visit to the maternity ward of the hospital, Mrs. Brou, who is the matron of the ECOWAS Amazon, stated that the material donated on behalf of ECOWAS women falls within the framework of the celebration of the international women’s day.

Brou said coming from a medical family, she feels excited and committed to donate such equipment to the hospital, promising that the intention of the commission is to continue carrying out charity programs in the hospital due to the proximity of the hospital to the ECOWAS Secretariat.

Commending the commission for their kind gestures, the Medical Director of Asokoro General Hospital, Uche Afioma, said that the commission had shown practical support for women.

She said: “This donation from the ECOWAS commissioners wife, Mrs. Jacqueline Brou we are very grateful on behalf of Asokoro district hospital and we thank her for the kind gesture and the entire AMAZONS, the team that has supported warmly in order to make these donations. We say thank you. They will be useful for upliftment of maternal and child health care in Nigeria and in the FCT as a whole. And we also hope that God will continue to bless them and replenish the purse.”

Also speaking, Dr. Olanrewaju Micheal, Head of Department & Consultant, O&G, thanked the ECOCOM Amazon for the donation, stating that the donations came at a good time.

Ukraine Thanks Nigeria For Standing By Her …Alleges Russia is Planning Chemical Attack

Ukraine has expressed appreciation to Nigeria and other nations that have stood by her in the ongoing war against Russia who invaded her territory on February 24.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, the Defence Attache to the Embassy of Ukraine in the Nigeria, Colonel Andrii Vasyliev, asked for more sanctions against Russia, insisting that Russia is planning chemical attack on Ukraine and has perpetrated war crimes with attacked targeted at children and some women raped by Russian soldiers.

Vasyliev said: “By killing civilians, Russia continues to commit crimes against humanity as defined by the Statute of the International Military Tribunal and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, cynically disregarding all requirements of the Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War. According to these norms, intentional attacks on civilians who are not directly involved in hostilities are equated to war crimes.

“As a result of Russia’s armed aggression in Ukraine, 115 children were killed and more than 140 were injured.
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights has been receiving complaints from Ukrainians about sexual crimes committed by the Russian military.”

He said: “Another confirmation of Russia’s preparations for a chemical attack against Ukraine has been found.

“The presence of chemists was detected in the occupation contingent of the Russian Federation. Thus, four days ago, as a result of a battle with Russian troops near Staromlynivka (south of Velyka Novosilka, Donetsk region), a large number of occupiers were killed.
Among the large number of received documents of the Russian militaries the certificate of the officer of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation of narrow profile specialization named Aftayev Alexander Viktorovich was found.

“According to the documents, before his death in Ukraine, Aftayev served in 21222 military unit – the Federal Office for the Safe Storage and Destruction of Chemical Weapons in the city of Penza. And before serving in the army, he graduated from the “Saratov Military Institute of Biological and Chemical Safety.”

He added that: “Thus, the documents obtained may indicate that Russia is preparing a terrorist attack against Ukraine on the use of chemical weapons.”

He said: “Ukraine is grateful to the world community for its support, financial and military assistance in the war against Russia. Ukraine is also grateful to the Government of Nigeria for supporting on March 2, 2022 the resolution “Aggression against Ukraine”, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly by a majority of its members.

“Ukraine is also grateful to the world community for imposing a powerful package of economic sanctions against the Russian economy, businesses, banking and individuals, which have already significantly affected the domestic economic situation in Russia. The world’s leading countries must tighten sanctions against Russia so that it no longer has any chance of continuing this war.”

He noted that: “Sanctions are needed for Russia to think about how to end this war as soon as possible.”

He said: “The top state leadership of Ukraine will continue its active foreign policy in counteracting military aggression. Thus, the President of Ukraine V. Zelensky holds daily talks with world and European leaders. Various formats of further cooperation are discussed. During these talks, Ukraine is asking Western partners to close the skies to Ukraine, or to provide appropriate modern weapons for self-defense against Russian aircraft and missiles.”
