South-South and South-East Governors have urged the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off their on-going industrial action in the interest of the Nigerian students and the nation.
The Governors made the call Sunday, September 29, 2013 at the end of the South-South/South-East Governors’ Forum meeting in Enugu.
They were of the view that the prolonged industrial action was affecting the development of the nation’s youths and the educational system and called for the resumption of academic activities while dialogue on contentious issues among all parties continue.
Governor Liyel Imoke, who gave a brief of the outcome of the meeting appealed to ASUU to put the interest of the nation and the youths ahead of other interests in their dialogue with government.
While commending the security agencies on its efforts to tackle the various security challenges in the country, the Governors called for continuing dialogue to resolve the various national issues to ensure the corporate existence of the country. They called for support for President Jonathan and urged him not to be distracted by emerging issues.
On the 2015 Presidency, The Governors said “that only the nigerian electorates have theright to decide who will lead the country according to democratic tenets” warning that “ the power of the electorates should not be usurped by any person or group”
The Governors also resolved to strengthen economic ties pursue the execution of projects already identified for the common good of their states and the zones.
The meeting was attended by Governors Liyel Imoke of Cross River state, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, Delta, Godswill Akpabio, Akwa-Ibom, Peter Obi, Anambra, Martins Elechi, Ebonyi, Theodore Orji, Abia, Sullivan Chima, Enugu and John Gborubigha, Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State
