The lid on petty fraud in Delta state public schols has finally been blown open, folowing the demotion of a school head over collection of illegal levies from pupils, despite the state government’s insistence that primary and secondaryeducation is free in Delta state.

Owing to myriad of complaint by parents, the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), has allegedly demoted the Head Mistress of Ahabam primary school, Asaba in Oshimili South Local Government Area of the state, Mrs. Esoyanya S .C for alleged extortion of parents.

The former Head Mistress was allegedly in the habit of collecting the sum of N4000 and above from parents for registration of their children before they could be admitted.

Mrs. Esoyanya was said to have also demanded money from ‘Batch C’ corps members who were posted to the school for signing their final clearance form.

The SUBEB Chairman, Hon. Sunny Ogwu, Secretary, Byron Unini. Director of Quality Assurance Mrs.Ewvarherhe and other senior members of the Board were on a special monitoring to confirm the allegation of extortion leveled against the former Head Mistress.

Board Chairman demoted her (HM) and directed the most senior teacher in the school, Mrs. Mgbako Benedethe to take over as the new Head Mistress immediately after the confirmation of the alleged extortion from parents who came to register their children.

Hon. Ogwu however, said that the action would serve as a deterrent to other teachers and head mistresses/masters who are corrupt.

According to him, “it is my responsibility to ensure that education in the state is in the right direction. Education is free in the state especially primary and secondary schools, unfortunatly, the head of this school is doing something contrary. Based on that, she has stepped down and next to her has taken over the office”.

The Chairman disclosed that the former HM is going to face a disciplinary action and the out come would determine her fate saying that ” it is going to serve as deterrent to others”.

The SUBEB boss urged teachers and Head teachers to desist from their sharp practices and improve the quality of education in the state saying that “we cannot play with the future of our children”.

He however, directed the new Head Mistress to only admit children based on the availability of space in the classroon in order not to congest the classrooms.
