Delta state government has condemned the recent unprovoked and physical attack on the state Commissioner for Education (Basic and Secondary), Professor Patrick Muoboghare, by hoodlums in the state.
The attack on the Commissioner has been greeted with wide condemnation from Deltans at home and in the Diaspora.
A statement signed by the Delta state Commissioner for Information, Barr. Chike Ogeah and dated September 9, 2013 described the incident as vicious and undesirable to the peace and security vision of the state government.
The statement made available to Blank NEWS Online, has also denied claims that the attacked member of the state executive council was in coma after the unprovoked attack which caused him severe bodily harm, adding that Prof. Muoboghare is recuperating and responding to treatment in an undisclosed hospital.
A reliable police source has however revealed to Blank NEWS Online that some of the perpetrators of the dastardly act have been apprehended by the police who have vowed prosecute the alleged miscreants.
The statement reads:
“On Saturday, September 6, 2013, the Delta State Commissioner for Education (Basic and Secondary), Professor Patrick Muoboghare, was viciously attacked by some elements among the youth at a meeting in Ughelli North Local Government Area.
“What was scheduled as a peaceful meeting among political groups in the area was hijacked by a few misguided youths that took advantage of the atmosphere of camaraderie to inflict bodily harm on Prof. Muoboghare.
“The commissioner was wounded from a knife attack, but thankfully, he was immediately taken to hospital where doctors attended to him. Prof. Muoboghare is stable, recuperating and responding to treatment. He is not and was never in coma.
“We unreservedly condemn the unprovoked attack on the commissioner. Arrests have been made by the police and perpetrators of the crime will face the full wrath of the law. At a time that Delta State has emerged as one of the most peaceful states in the country, the unfortunate incident belies the perception of the youth as the successor generation among the political class that should usher an era of tolerance in politics.
“We hereby urge Deltans, especially youth to eschew violence in all their conduct as attacks on persons under any guise is a criminal act punishable under Nigerian laws.”
Recall that Prof Patrick Muoboghare was on Saturday, August 07, 2013 attacked by youths during the inauguration of the Ughelli North local government ward executives of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the party secretariat in Ughelli.
