Sports: Uduaghan Expresses Faith In Deltans @ Commonwealth Games

DELTA State Governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan has said athletes from the state would do Nigeria proud at the on-going Commonwealth Games at Glasgow, Scotland.

The Governor stated this at the Warri Township Stadium Warri, while speaking at the 6th Chief of the Naval Staff Swimming Championship organised by the Nigeria Aquatic Federation in conjunction with the Nigerian Navy and the Delta State government.

According to the Governor, the former Military Administrator of Bendel State, General Samuel Ogbemudia set the pace for Delta and Edo State to emerge victorious in sporting contests, disclosing that swimming is one competition that Deltans has won laurels for the country.

Governor Uduaghan who also, commissioned the Olympic Size Swimming Pool before the commencement of the championship said, “swimming for us is very important, we have been winning in all the swimming competitions.’

“We discover the swimmers at their different communities, take them to the swimming stretch at Obiaruku before we bring them to the swimming pools for more exposure,” the Governor said, adding, “we have one Olympic Size Swimming Pool at the Oghara Stadium and very soon, we will commission the one at Asaba so that, we can have three standard swimming pools in Delta State.”

Continuing, he said, “for us as a state, we take sports seriously, we invest in sports because it makes a lot of people to be positively engaged, General Ogbemudia is the god-father of sports in Delta and Edo States, what we are doing now is a continuation of the legacy of Ogbemudia and I am very confident that Deltans who are participating in the Commonwealth Games will do Nigerians proud.”

Earlier, the Chairman, Delta State Sports Commission, Mr Pinnick Amaju thanked Governor Uduaghan for his interest in sports development, noting that Delta State has remained the number one state of the federation due to the Governor’s commitment to sports development.
