GOVERNOR OBOREVWORI IS DEVELOPING ALL PARTS OF DELTA; EMPOWERING DELTANS

By Dr. Ifeanyi M. Osuoza

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff Oborevwori’s determination to continue to ensure even development of all parts of the State including riverine communities, which he has consistently stated were very dear to his administration and will not be abandoned in his developmental trajectory for the State, manifested once again when he inaugurated Model Secondary School, Ogulagha, Burutu Local Government Area of the State and commissioned the Faculty Building and Lecture Halls at the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko in Warri South-West Local Government Area of the State.

Both projects, which are in line with the Meaningful Development Component of the MORE Agenda, will not only ensure that some of the children in the riverine communities will not be denied the benefit of quality secondary education, but will also provide an excellent platform to produce graduates with unique skill sets, knowledge, and capacity to revolutionize Nigeria’s vast maritime sector, with the strong potentials for urbanization, while creating employment and retail business opportunities in the host community and environs. Governor Oborevwori has also approved the rehabilitation/reconstruction of the 12.1 kilometre Odimodi-Okuntu-Ogulagha Road at a total cost of N5.2b, as well as given immediate approval for the construction of road to the Maritime University’s permanent site.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, in his avowed commitment to meet the Sustainable Agricultural Sector Reforms initiative encapsulated in the Realistic Reforms component of the M.O.R.E Agenda, has not only empowered over 6,000 farmers with agricultural inputs to boost agricultural production in the State, he has also ensured the distribution of fertilizers to farmers across the 25 Local Government Areas of the State, thereby boosting agricultural productivity and ensuring food security for Deltans. Not only that, the Governor he has also equally continued to ramp up the empowerment of more Deltans with the Delta State Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus, D-CARES, from which 97,365 persons benefitted recently, bringing the tally of beneficiaries of the D-CARES programme to the grand total of over 208,000. This is in addition to the expanded focus on Agriculture under the Result Area 2 – FADAMA (Food Security) of the D-CARES scheme and also released One Billion Naira counterpart funding for the Africa Union Development Agency, New Partnership for African Development (AUDA NEPAD), to empower 2,000 farmers for food production, livestock and aquaculture.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, in furtherance of the numerous initiatives already instituted in his commitment to galvanize a more robust health sector, has also approved the establishment of a College of Medical Sciences at the Delta State University of Science and Technology (DSUST) in Ozoro, a development which will not only enhance medical education in the region, but will most importantly, strengthen healthcare education and provide more opportunities for students pursuing medical careers within Delta State.

There is no doubt that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is steadily and systematically Advancing Delta in all sectors and across the three Senatorial zones in the State, with the MORE Agenda.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is working and Deltans are seeing it.

UK partnership with Nigeria on drug war yielding results- UK Home Office

The United Kingdom Home Office International Operations, HOIO, has said its collaboration with Nigeria on the fight against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking is yielding positive results as evident by the streak of successes being recorded by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in recent times.

Head of UK Home Office International Operations, Victoria Pullen stated this when she led her colleague, Kristoffer Hawksfield on a courtesy visit to the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd) to sign a renewed Memorandum of Understanding between HOIO and NDLEA in Abuja on Monday

While thanking Marwa for an “excellent cooperation”, Pullen said: “the issue of drug trafficking is a huge global issue, and like many big challenges such as drug trafficking, it takes a huge global effort to try and counter that. I think it’s evident by some of the recent successes and the volume of some of the illicit commodities that your teams are finding that that cooperation is working exceptionally well currently, and we are currently really enjoying working with your team on those successes.”

She said: “The willingness of your teams to work with us and do things differently and try things differently, which fortunately is leading to those successes, and we like the way that you’ve worked with the UK and the levels of engagement that we’ve enjoyed with the teams.”

She noted that the commissioning of the NDLEA Marine Command Headquarters built and donated by the UK government in Lagos last week was a significant marker in the cooperation between the agency and HOIO.

She said: “We look forward to seeing the results of that level of investment that will bring significant benefits to you in Nigeria by being able to stop those drugs from permeating your own society, and also in the global space because the more that we help you to interdict and take out of the system here, the less that’s going into countries around the world and into society.

“Our team has got nothing but very, very positive things to say about the relationship that we have with you and your teams, and we very much look forward to the future and building on those and making them a lot better.”

In his response, Marwa expressed appreciation to the UK government for supporting Nigeria’s efforts to curb the scourge of illicit drug trafficking especially with the building and donation of Marine Headquarters facility to the agency last week and a similar operational facility at the MMIA Command in Ikeja Lagos last year.

He said: “I am most delighted to meet Ms. Victoria Pullen in person, as it gives me the opportunity to express profound gratitude on behalf of myself, the agency and the country for the tremendous assistance, both tangible and intangible, that we have received from the Home Office International Operations (HOIO), in particular, and the British Government in general.

“Just last week, we commissioned the Marine Command Headquarters of NDLEA, built from scratch and donated by the Home Office International Operations. We have also received in the past a new CITF facility at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, also from the Home Office International Operations. These are in addition to others like training and intelligence that are vital to our counter-narcotics operations.

“Since we kicked off the reform of NDLEA three years ago, we have enjoyed an increasing partnership with the Home Office International Operations. Among our international partners the Home Office International Operations is one of our major partners whose contributions immeasurably enhance the capacity of NDLEA and invariably impact our performance positively”, he stated.

Marwa however asked for more support from the UK government. “We continue to seek more of your assistance in our quest to combat illicit drug trafficking on our shores and also to contribute to our common goal in fighting the activities of transnational criminal organizations. The new refreshed MOU, which we are about to sign after the remarks, is a testament to our strong partnership, and we are looking forward to boosting our existing relationship to help us achieve our common and shared responsibility of tackling the drug problem. Now, the NDLEA in the last three years or so has made tremendous impacts, and I must say that instrumental to that is the support from the UK.

“We have made, in three years, over 52,000 arrests. We have made seizures of over 8,000 tons of illicit substances, and convictions in excess of 9,000. That’s a very significant success in court. Given the volume of traffic of travellers between the UK and Nigeria, there is a need for sharing of intelligence and actionable data further collaboration in that respect will further strengthen our relationship. So, I excited that we’re signing a new MoU here today.”

Appraisal: Senator Ned Nwoko and his call for Africa’s cohesion

BY AUSTIN OYIBODE

Senator Ned Nwoko, a prominent Nigerian businessman, lawyer, and philanthropist and federal lawmaker, recently made headlines when he called for a unified currency and common language for the 54 countries on the African continent.

His call has sparked conversation and debate across the African continent. His proposal taps into broader discussions about the future of Africa, particularly how the continent can better position itself on the global stage, enhance internal cohesion, and unlock its economic potentials.

These ideas are both ambitious and complex, rooted in a vision for greater African unity. They also come with significant challenges, requiring deep exploration to understand the motivations, potential benefits, and obstacles of implementing a unified currency and language across Africa.

One of the major aspects of Nwoko’s proposal is his call for a single African currency. Currently, Africa is home to 54 countries, many of which use different currencies. Some countries share a currency through regional organizations, such as the West African CFA franc or the East African Shilling, but the continent still suffers from a fragmented monetary landscape. This fragmentation has long been seen as an obstacle to deeper economic integration.

A unified currency, according to Nwoko, would be transformative for Africa. By creating a single monetary unit, African nations could eliminate the need for currency conversion when trading with one another, which would reduce transaction costs and make cross-border trade simpler and more efficient.

Businesses could more easily operate across national borders, as they would no longer need to deal with exchange rate fluctuations. This could foster the growth of intra-African trade, which remains underdeveloped despite efforts like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) aimed at boosting trade between African nations.

Moreover, a unified currency could provide economic stability for many African countries, some of which experience significant volatility in their national currencies due to inflation or poor fiscal management. By adopting a common currency, these countries could benefit from a more stable and regulated monetary policy, similar to the experience of smaller European nations after joining the eurozone.

In addition, a unified currency could attract greater foreign investment to Africa. Investors are often wary of the risks associated with currency fluctuations, particularly in emerging markets. A stable, continent-wide currency could mitigate some of those risks, making African markets more attractive to global investors. This, in turn, could drive economic growth and development across the continent.

Alongside his call for a unified currency, Nwoko has also proposed the adoption of a common African language. Africa is home to an astonishing linguistic diversity, with more than 2,000 languages spoken across the continent. This linguistic diversity is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Africa, but it also presents a challenge for communication, education, and unity.

Nwoko’s proposal for a common language is aimed at addressing these challenges. By adopting a single language for communication across the continent, Africans could more easily engage with one another, whether in trade, diplomacy, or cultural exchange.

A common language could also play a role in fostering a stronger sense of African identity and unity, helping to overcome the divisions that colonialism imposed by drawing arbitrary borders between ethnic groups and languages.

A common language could also have practical benefits in terms of education and governance. Currently, many African countries use colonial languages, such as English, French, and Portuguese, as their official languages. While these languages serve as bridges between different linguistic groups, they also perpetuate the legacy of colonialism and can be barriers to education for many people, particularly those in rural areas who do not speak the colonial languages fluently.

By adopting a common African language, countries could promote greater access to education and more inclusive governance, empowering citizens to participate more fully in their societies.

A unified language, according to Nwoko, would promote social cohesion, facilitate education, and enable Africans to communicate more effectively with one another. By breaking down linguistic barriers, a common language could foster a stronger sense of African identity and unity. It would allow for the free flow of ideas, knowledge, and innovation, which is essential for the continent’s development.

Ned Nwoko’s call for a unified African currency and language reflects a broader vision for African unity and progress. His proposals are rooted in the belief that Africa can achieve greater economic and social integration by breaking down the barriers that divide its people.

A unified currency could simplify trade, attract investment, and provide economic stability, while a common language could foster greater communication and cultural unity across the continent.

However, both ideas face significant challenges. The economic disparity between African countries, the need for strong institutions, and the complexities of implementing a new currency are major obstacles to a unified currency.

Similarly, the linguistic diversity of Africa and the practical challenges of adopting a common language would make that process partly challenging. Despite these challenges, Nwoko’s proposals open an important conversation about the future of Africa and how the continent can work towards greater unity and self-reliance in the years to come.

He extolled Uduaghan for his outstanding contributions to the growth and development of the state and country, stating that some of the iconic projects in the state capital would remain indelible legacies of his stewardship in the state.

Governor Oborevwori described Uduaghan as “a compassionate, detribalised leader and elder statesman of repute”, whose contributions to the growth and development of the state and the country would remain ingrained in historical archives.

He appealed to the elder statesman to continue providing useful advice to the Government and people of the state, and prayed that God Almighty would continue to bless him with good health and long life.

Oborevwori gave special recognition to Uduaghan for the state’s free maternal and under-five health care programmes, which established the national standard.

Hon.  Fleming Carter urges political leaders to live in their constituencies for development impact

By Harrison Akamule.

Senior Special Assistant to Delta State Governor on Political Matters,  Hon.  Fleming Carter has urged political leaders/representatives to live within their communities for robust  interactions that translate to development impact on the areas.

Carter spoke, penultimate week, at a reception held in his honour by Obrikpo Quarters of Akugbene community in Bomadi Local Government Area for his contributions to elevation of political fortunes of Akugbene community, service to the nation and humanity in general.

Chairman of Obrikpo quarters who doubled as the organizing committee chair of the reception, Mr. Richard Sugha said: “28 years ago in 1996, it was Mr. Fleming Carter, while at his working post at the defunct National Electoral Commission, influenced 2 additional electoral wards to the existing one ward in Akugbene community. This is besides Mr. Carter’s other commitments and contributions to community development, service to the nation and humanity in general”.

“May I also use this opportunity to commend others who have been similarly committed to community development and ask our youth to follow in their footsteps by channeling their energies to worthy and productive ventures”, Obrikpo advised.

Responding, Mr. Carter said: “I am overwhelmed by the recognition accorded me here over my modest contribution 28 years ago, which is here acknowledged as haven touched and still touching many lives positively”.

“The essence of service should always be towards raising the quality and standard of living of the people”, Carter said, adding: “It is therefore imperative for us to look into the untoward trend of having representatives who do not live within the communities as councilors and delegates. These diaspora councilors and delegates hardly visit their areas of representation for robost interactions with the people for meaningful inputs for use by the representatives”.

“As the President is the  head a Country, Governors are  the head of their states  and Chairmen are  head of their  Local Government Areas. So the Councillors are  the head of their  Wards. Councillors should be at their  Wards where they  are heads to raise the living standards of the area”, Carter stressed.

Hon.  Carter noted that the advice was urgent for the fulfillment of the laudable MORE Agenda which needs the reliable information of the grassroots representatives who truly reside and interact with the people.

In the statement, signed by the Ndanike of Aboh Kingdom, High Chief Paul Resume, Iyasele of Aboh Kingdom, High Chief Ifeanyi Odili, the Ozeh of Aboh, High Chief Kenneth Odili, and the Isagba Ajieh of Aboh Kingdom, High Chief Chris Ogwu, they said that, “it is a thing of joy that His Imperial Majesty, Obi Oputa III has emerged in the person of Prince Gregory Oputa and it is our duty as indigenes of Aboh to accord him the respect he deserves as his subjects.

“Those who were interested in becoming the King should know that traditionally, the stool is no longer vacant as all the rites have been performed and it is impossible for us to have two Kings in Aboh Kingdom at the same time.

“We should also, bear in mind that t is the exclusive responsibility of the King makers to select who becomes a King in Aboh and they have discharged their functions diligently according to the criteria based on age-long custom and tradition of Aboh Kingdom.

“We have implicit confidence in Obi Oputa III in his ability to take Aboh to greater heights; we are also praying that his reign will usher in a more peaceful and prosperous Aboh Kingdom for us to take our pride of place once again as a revered Kingdom in the world.

“For the few persons who are not residing in Aboh but are committed to sending out messages that there is crisis in Aboh over the Kingship, we advise that you should make efforts to visit home and see the joy on the faces of our people, and also, enjoy the peace that now pervades Aboh Kingdom.

“We also, advise those few individuals, their cronies, media houses, including social media influencers, to stop all forms of actions that will cause disaffection in the Kingdom or project our King negatively before the world.

“We thank the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, for making Delta State conducive for socio-economic and traditional activities to take place and we look forward to the formal presentation of Staff of Office to our King, Obi Oputa III.”

It would be recalled that in a colourful ceremony that witnessed jubilation in all parts of Aboh Kingdom, Prince Gregory Oputa was crowned formally as the 20th Obi of Aboh on September 15, 2024 and addressed as His Imperial Majesty Obi Oputa III.

Recall thatI a recent crisis pitched Hon Olise Imegwu, former speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, High Chief Ajieh Ogwu, president general of Aboh community and four quarters that produce the king against Chief Greg Oputa, the new king and some prominent chiefs in the community.

In a press statement widely circulated in many online newspapers within the week ,the chiefs said that Oputa remained their king and should be so respected.

Kingship Tussle: Crisis looms in Aboh

A royal crisis surrounding the choice of a king is looming in the ancient kingdom of Aboh, a place whose ancestors held the Landers brother (John and Richard) as slaves.

It is a crisis that pitched Hon Olise Imegwu, former speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, High Chief Ajieh Ogwu, president general of Aboh community and four quarters that produce the king against Chief Greg Oputa, the new king and some prominent chiefs in the community.

In a press statement widely circulated in many online newspapers within the week ,the chiefs said that Oputa remained their king and should be so respected.

The chiefs throwing their weight behind Oputa are Ndanike of Aboh, High Chief Paul Esumei, Iyasele of Aboh kingdom, High Chief Ifeanyi Odili, the Ozeh of Aboh, High Chief Kenneth Odili and the Isagba Ajieh of Aboh kingdom, High Chief Chris Ogwu.

They argued that Prince Gregory Oputa emerged as the king and called on all Aboh sons and daughters to support and respect him.

However, Blank NEWS Online can recall that Dr Olise Imegwu led some Aboh sons and daughters to protest the imposition of Oputa as king to Asaba, the state capital.

Imegwu while addressing the state police commissioner and at the deputy governor office in Asaba respectively said that Oputa did not emerge through the due process and challenged Oputa to show the world the video of his crowning and who placed the crown on his head as a king.

The president general of Aboh community High Chief Sir John Ajie Ogwu also recently held a meeting in Aboh with the four quarters and king makers with the message that Aboh has no king.

The four quarters that rotationally produce the king are Umu Ogwezi, Umu Ossai ,Umu Obi and Umu Ojugbele were present in that meeting held in Aboh, headquarters of Ndokwa East LGA.

Also present were the elders and Oduah, the supreme leader.

Addressing the gathering, the President General of Aboh community High Chief Sir John Ajie Ogwu and Ikeogwe Ajie of Aboh kingdom said that there was no king in Aboh because of the manner and the way Oputa emerged as king, adding that anybody parading himself as one was a liar.

Ogwu explained that the Oduah was forced to chalk the aspirant and that everything was done in secret.

The president general challenged the man claiming to be the king to show the world the video how he was crowned and who placed the crown on his head.

Bill to Establish National Social Security Agency proposed by Sen Nwoko scales First Reading

A bill sponsored by Senator Ned Nwoko, which seeks to establish the National Social Security Agency (NSSA) and replace the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, has passed its first reading in the Senate today, Thursday, October 17.

The bill, titled “A Bill for an Act to Establish the National Social Security Agency (NSSA), Repealing the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, and Providing for the Structure, Functions, and Funding of the National Social Security System”, aims to create a new agency under the office of the President. The proposed agency would be responsible for implementing a comprehensive social security system designed to ensure basic livelihood, dignity, and support for vulnerable populations across Nigeria.

In his explanatory memorandum, Senator Nwoko outlined the need to restructure Nigeria’s social welfare administration, citing the limitations of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs in addressing the long-term needs of those in need. He emphasized that a more sustainable approach is required to address issues of poverty, unemployment, and social insecurity.

The senator’s proposal seeks to introduce a more efficient and dignified system for providing support, rooted in respect for human dignity and social rights.

It is worth noting that Senator Nwoko, who represents Delta North Senatorial District, had earlier raised this issue in an open letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, calling for a more effective and data-driven approach to social security in Nigeria.

The successful passage of the bill’s first reading marks a major step in ongoing discussions around reforming Nigeria’s welfare programs as it proceeds to further readings and deliberations in the Senate.

Gov. Oborevwori directs immediate payment of minimum wage in Delta

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has approved the payment of the new minimum wage to workers in the state with effect from October.

Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu, disclosed this, Wednesday, during a meeting of the Committee of the new minimum wage with leadership of the Organized Labour in Delta State, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), to discuss the implementation of the new minimum wage.

Emu said the meeting was at the instance of Governor Oborevwori, who he stated has directed immediate payment of the new minimum wage starting from the month of October.

“The minimum wage committee earlier agreed that we can’t make payment until the National Income Salaries and Wages Commission sends the chart. We have now received the chart and we have in the last three sessions gone through the consequential adjustments and implications on our cash flow.

“Even though we have not been able to determine all the ramifications of the consequential adjustments on the future cash flow requirements of the State, the Governor directed we go ahead to pay because he feels the pains of the people as a labour friendly Governor.”

Responding, Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress NLC, Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku commended Governor Oborevwori for the prompt approval, adding that he had made the work of labour easier.

“The Labour movement in Delta State appreciates Governor Oborevwori for graciously approving the implementation of the 2024 minimum wage in Delta State without stressing us.

“He has made the job of labour to be less difficult. Before the National Income and Salaries Wages Commission released the chart and consequential adjustments, the Governor did assure labour and workers in the state that he will pay any time the chart is out.

“Some people thought he was making a political statement but today he has proved that his promise was not just a political statement.

“We thank him for giving the go ahead to implement the payment while we correct any discrepancies later.”

Senator Ned Nwoko: Architect of Delta North’s Federal Road Resurgence

Screenshot

The recent commencement of remedial works on the dilapidated sections of the Benin-Asaba Highway has elicited a chorus of accolades directed towards various individuals perceived to have played a role in bringing about this critical project. This is hardly unexpected, as success invariably attracts recognition. Such is human proclivity.
However, amid the cacophony of praise and the triumphant validations, it would be a grave oversight to ignore the pivotal role played by the Distinguished Senator Ned Munir Nwoko in orchestrating not only the rehabilitation of the Benin-Asaba Expressway but also a myriad of other crucial road projects in the Delta North Senatorial District, which he represents with unwavering tenacity in the hallowed chambers of the Senate.

In a display of unparalleled foresight, and with mere months into the 10th National Assembly, Senator Nwoko, in October 2023, formally petitioned the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, pointing out an exigent need for the total reconstruction and resurfacing of federal roads in Delta North. In his meticulously drafted letter—URGENT NEED FOR TOTAL RECONSTRUCTION/RESURFACING OF FEDERAL ROADS IN DELTA NORTH SENATORIAL DISTRICT—the Senator unequivocally emphasized the precarious state of the Benin-Agbor-Asaba Road. The Senator articulated that, since the road’s dualization 22 years prior, no significant maintenance or rehabilitation had been undertaken on this critical highway. He called for a comprehensive reconstruction and resurfacing of the road and further proposed the construction of service stations at strategic intervals along the route to accommodate trucks, trailers, and petrol tankers, whose haphazard parking on the highway had contributed to its deterioration. While the construction of these service stations remains on the horizon, the rehabilitation of the road is currently underway with remedial repairs on the failed portions.

Senator Ned Nwoko, further turned his unrelenting gaze towards the Onicha-Ugbo – Idumuje-Ugboko – Ewohimi Road. This vital thoroughfare, which connects Delta State to Edo State and ultimately to the northern regions of Nigeria, serves as an artery of both economic and social importance. It is imperative to recall that it was Senator Ned Nwoko himself who, in 2009, facilitated the construction of this road via the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). However, since its completion, it has fallen into a deplorable state, devoid of any maintenance or rehabilitation efforts. The Senator, fully cognizant of the road’s strategic importance, has once again raised the clarion call for its restoration.

Not to be overlooked is the equally distressing state of the Abraka-Agbor-Uromi Road, which has languished in a state of impassability for over seven years. Senator Ned Nwoko, always one to champion the causes of his constituency, has vigorously brought this issue to the fore as well.

Nevertheless, among the crowning jewels of Senator Ned Nwoko’s audacious infrastructural blueprint shines a singularly visionary undertaking: construction of the Asaba-Oko-Okpai-Patani Coastal Road. Unlike the previously mentioned roads, this ambitious venture does not seek to restore a pre-existing infrastructure but heralds the birth of a brand-new arterial thoroughfare, painstakingly conceptualized by the Senator with the dual aim of engendering economic vibrancy and ameliorating the dire living conditions of the affected communities. Spanning critical nodes as Oko, Aballa, Utchi, Okpai, Aboh, and Patani, this coastal road is set to serve as the fulcrum of a burgeoning economic corridor, drastically enhancing the mobility of individuals, goods, and services across the region.

More profoundly, the road’s construction is poised to address the hydrological challenges that have long besieged these coastal areas. Its embankment works, integral to the project, promise a robust solution to the recurrent flooding that has stymied development and wrought untold hardship on residents for decades.

During his electoral campaigns, Senator Ned Nwoko personally traversed these communities and witnessed firsthand the abject conditions of the road and the immense hardship inflicted upon its users and habitants of its environs. His empathy translated into action, as he pledged to secure federal intervention. He noted that the state government alone could not muster the requisite resources to execute the thorough and durable rehabilitation needed, particularly in light of the perennial flooding that plagues the region. True to form, the talk and do Senator has, within a single year in office, succeeded in securing a place for this monumental project in the NDDC’s 2024 budget. The Asaba-Oko-Patani Road, along with its attendant bridge works, stands as the single largest project in the NDDC’s portfolio with an imposing contract sum of N26.890 billion.

It is of paramount importance to acknowledge that Senator Ned Nwoko’s intervention has never been a matter of mere perfunctory correspondence. His engagements with the pertinent ministries, agencies, and commissions have been assiduous and relentless, involving numerous follow-up meetings and persistent lobbying. For the records’ sake, Senator Ned Nwoko’s efforts predate even the aforementioned interventions, as he had previously presented these road projects to the Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Roads, and ensured their prominence on the legislative agenda.

As the adage goes, “a labourer is worthy of his hire.” Senator Ned Nwoko has not only met but has exceeded the lofty expectations placed upon him by his constituents. He has remained steadfastly vigilant in safeguarding the mandate entrusted to him and has approached his senatorial responsibilities with an indefatigable sense of duty and purpose. It is, therefore, only fitting that he be lauded for his unparalleled commitment to infrastructural renewal in Delta North, and for his unyielding resolve to actualize the development that his people so rightly deserve. The Senator’s actions embody the essence of statesmanship. And for this, he deserves every accolade.

LAND GRABBING: Ex-Imo Governor Accused Of Illegal Demolition of Property In Abuja

The senator representing Imo West senatorial district at the 9th Nigerian Senate, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, has been accused of land grabbing and illegal demolition of a property in the Lugbe area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

All hell was let loose on Monday, October 14, when some persons dressed in police uniform, armed to the teeth, arrived at the land located in an estate in Lugbe, conveyed by a bus allegedly belonging to the former governor.

The said policemen, who stormed the estate in a commando-like manner upon arrival, created an atmosphere of panic and tension, when they started shooting sporadically into the air and firing tear gas indiscriminately at residents and workers at the building construction site.

Their intention was to enable them carry out what has been termed “an illegal and wicked demolition of buildings in the estate, in an attempt to forcefully take over the said land”.

The land in question, located in Lugbe on Airport Road, is owned by Bonatech Electricals Limited and the company has since dragged Okorocha, a former Imo State Governor, to the Federal High Court, in 2023, over the ownership of the property.

The matter was filed with suit number: FCT/HC/CV/6489/2023, and has ETHA VENTURES, belonging to Okorocha’s second son, Amen Rochas Okorocha, as defendant.

The protesters said: “Having seen the handwriting on the wall that his son may lose the case in court, following all empirical evidences and documents presented by the Plaintiff, Bonatech Electrical Limited, Okorocha and his son have been doing everything illegally possible, including attempts to induce staff of the Federal Capital Development Authority, to help them formalize their forged documents, while deploying his vast contacts and money to grab the massive land.

“Though both parties are still waiting for the final court judgment, it is imperative that the Okorocha family play by the books and respect rule of law rather than dancing naked in the marketplace.

“During the illegal demolition operation, to cover their track and leave no trace, the police officers deceived the workers on the building construction site that they came from FCDA.”

Bonatech Electrical Limited has called on the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike; the Management of the FCDA; appropriate authorities; and all well meaning Nigerians to “call Okorocha and his family to order as this illegal way of grabbing land, which he has been used to and known for over the years, is not the way to go.

“He should follow due process and respect the rule of law,” they declared.

As at press time, Okorocha could not be reached for comments.

Chief Emami Reveals: I turned down lot of awards, decorated ‘Prime Promoter/Protector of Itsekiri Tradition’

Famous politician and businessman, Chief Ayirimi Emami, has revealed how he turned down lot of awards for many years, because he didn’t want undeserving recognition, but had to accept honour by the Association of Community Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria, ACNPN, Delta State Council, when he was informed that the award had to do with tradition.

Chief Emami, made the disclosure Monday night, at his palatial home in Egbokodo, Warri, when the Association of Community Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria, ACNPN, bestowed the award of “Prime Promoter/Protector of Itsekiri Traditional Heritage” on him.

Whilst stating: “The Ologbotsere, represents the Omajaja and 80% of us sitting here are Omajaja. I am the Head of the Omajaja, which makes me the Ologbotsere”, Chief Emami, remarked: “I don’t think I am the only Deltan that deserves this. I have turned down a lot of awards for many years now. But when I was informed by one of your colleagues and he said that it has to do with tradition, saying, I am one of those promoting and protecting the culture and tradition of our people, I accepted to receive the award, especially because the Association of Community Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria, has ‘community’ in its name, which is my constituency.

“I know a lot of traditional rulers are clamouring that they should be given constitutional roles, some of us welcome that idea. If you are talking about traditional rulers, they are the closest to the community and to the grassroots. If a traditional ruler is honest, the community will be blessed. In every tradition and community, they have a way of installing their traditional ruler. If you wake up today as a traditional ruler and support Illegality in your domain or a publisher begin to publish what is not right in his locality, that means such person is trying to destroy the community.

“As at today, if I have the opportunity to speak to any traditional ruler, you must keep your institution the way your forefathers left it. You do not allow money to influence our traditional institution, because before government, the traditional institution existed. They were the ones directing and dealing with the locals and dealing with the White men, even when we now have establishment of the government in place, is the same traditional rulers, that is the first point of call, but if you decide to do the other way round, that means your kingdom and your community, will be destroyed.

“I am of the philosophy that you do not modernize it, and that’s why when it comes to tradition, I will do the right thing and I don’t mix it with modernity. As individual, you will come and go, but the institution remains, so do not try to mess with the institution, but ensure to stand for the institution. There’s no short cut, you do not bend it. In every institution in a state, there are lay down procedures and when you encourage wrong things, wrong things will come to your doorstep.

“I am not going to take this honour for granted, it is for me to do more. I dedicate this award to the Almighty God, our good ancestors and all the descendants of the Ologbotsere dynasty.”

Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of the Association of Community Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria, ACNPN, Delta State Council, Comr. Jude Obiemenyego, stated: “The association recognise you on what you have done in the area of tradition, as the Promoter and Protector of (Itsekiri) Tradition in Delta and Nigeria. You have done well. We also plead with you to continue in your traditional settings, to make sure that traditional institution has a place in Nigeria and the world.

“We celebrate you (Chief Ayirimi Emami) for being a man. Outside tradition, you have done well in the area of youth empowerment in the state and beyond, a lot of people have benefitted from your philanthropist gesture. I do not have much to say, but with these few words of mine, I pray that you will continue to partner with the media.”

Chief Mike Odeli, Engr. Tuoyo Omatsuli, Barr. Richard Omare, Mr. Austin Oribioye, Mr. Canaan Ajagbawa and Mr. Alex Eyengho, were among prominent members of Ologbotsere descendants and political bigwigs present during the award ceremony.

WFP Calls for Public/Private Collaboration to Tackle Hunger in Nigeria

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has advised public and private sector leaders to work together to tackle the root causes of hunger and build peace in Nigeria,

This advice was given by the Executive Director of the UN agency, Cindy McCain
while concluding a visit to Nigeria, stressed that there was urgent need for this step to be taken amidst rising food insecurity and malnutrition in Nigeria,

A statement by the WFP made available to our correspondent on Monday, said despite its huge agricultural potential, Nigeria is now in the grips a widespread humanitarian crisis driven by poverty, recurring conflicts, and climate shocks – with 32 million people struggling to feed themselves.

The statement said during McCain’s five-day visit to Nigeria, she witnessed firsthand how conflict, climate shocks, and high food and fuel prices are driving millions into acute hunger and malnutrition.

The statement quoted McCain to have said: “What I have seen and heard during my visit to Damasak, in Borno State, is deeply disturbing. An urgent humanitarian crisis is unfolding in northern Nigeria, as the number of children with acute malnutrition soars and the ongoing conflict prevents millions from returning to their homes and lands,” adding that: “People there desperately need peace and stability, so farming and food production can restart and this hunger crisis can be halted in its tracks.”

According to the statement, the prolonged humanitarian crisis – worsened by an economic slowdown, high inflation, rising food prices, and the recent floods – is endangering the lives of children, pregnant women and girls, and entire communities. Over 3.6 million people in northeastern and northwestern states have been forcibly displaced by conflict and are not able to access their farmlands or engage in other economic activities. With devastating flooding hitting Maiduguri in September – described as the worst in 30 years – more than 400,000 people have also been temporarily displaced in and around the city.

The statement further said malnutrition is rising, with nine million children at risk of acute malnutrition in the country. The number of children admitted for severe and moderate acute malnutrition has risen by 40 and 70 percent compared to 2023.

It said WFP is on the ground, supporting government-led efforts responding to the most urgent needs, and doing all it can. So far this year, WFP has assisted 1.6 million people affected by the ongoing humanitarian crisis, distributing 32,000 metric tons of food and US$40 million in cash entitlements, decrying that the scale of the crisis calls for a response that goes beyond these badly-needed humanitarian interventions.

The statement said while in Abuja and Lagos, McCain engaged with senior government and private sector leaders, creative industries, international financial institutions, the United Nations, and donor representatives to explore African-led solutions, and discuss the role of the private sector and entrepreneurship in addressing food insecurity and youth employment.

It said McCain noted that “WFP’s commitment to delivering lifesaving assistance and tackling the root causes of hunger in Nigeria is stronger than ever. By mobilizing funding, technology, and ambitious new partnerships between the private and public sectors, we can support rural livelihoods, strengthen food systems and offer sustainable solutions to food insecurity that empower local communities,”

It admitted that Nigeria – West Africa’s most populous and largest economy – has the potential to play an outsize role in stabilizing the region and helping to ensure sustainable food security and nutrition for millions, provided the country receives the attention commensurate with its strategic importance.

The statement revealed that WFP is working with the Government of Nigeria and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) on a ground-breaking food systems programme that will help communities escape the cycle of conflict by building the resilient, inclusive and effective food systems they need to achieve self-reliance.
Through the “Out of Conflict, into Solutions” food systems strategy, WFP will seek to address post-harvest losses, limited access to agricultural inputs, poor dietary diversity and limited access to food in Nigeria.

It further said: “Agriculture is a cornerstone of Nigeria’s economy – providing employment to more than a third of the labor force – up to 80 percent in rural areas. The private sector is one of the key contributors to developing extensive supply chains, including production, processing, manufacturing and distributions.”

It however explained that WFP needs US$228 million to stave off catastrophe in northeast Nigeria and meet the food and nutrition needs of 1.6 million over the next six months.

Oborevwori’s indelible footprints in Delta

By Festus Ahon

When Sheriff Oborevwori assumed office as Governor of Delta State on May 29, 2023, he assured Deltans of his commitment to advancing the state’s development, building on the achievements of his predecessors. Since then, he has worked tirelessly, with landmark projects spread across the state.

In nearly every local government and senatorial district, Oborevwori has initiated or completed signature projects. During his inaugural address, he emphasized his focus on restoring Warri, the “Oil City,” to its former glory. The twin cities of Warri and Effurun, along with their environs, have long suffered from infrastructural decay and frequent flooding.

Oborevwori has remained steadfast in his efforts to revitalize these cities through urban renewal initiatives and the construction of new infrastructure. Numerous roads in Warri have been transformed, including the completed Upper and Lower Erejuwa Roads, Gabriel Mabiaku Road, and Esisi Road to Estate Roundabout, with a spur to Nana College connecting Ajamimogha.

The immediate past administration had awarded the rehabilitation of the Warri Township Stadium. After visiting the project site twice, Governor Oborevwori determined that the contractors lacked the capacity to meet the project specifications. As a result, he reassigned the project to construction giant Julius Berger Plc for its timely and effective completion.

Another project of immense value is the Trans-Warri Road and bridges which Governor Oborevwori and his Royal Majesty, Ogiame Atuwatse III, CFR, the Olu of Warri Kingdom drove through to Ode-Itsekiri, the traditional headquarters of the Iwere nation for the first time.

In the Isoko nation, Governor Oborevwori has not disappointed the people with the completion and inauguration of some projects at the Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro. During his first 100 days in office, Governor Oborevwori inaugurated the completed Administrative building, living quarters for the University’s principal officers as well as internal roads in the University.

Just recently at the inauguration of Emevor-Orogun Road Phase 1, Governor Oborevwori announced the award of contract for the construction of the College Health Sciences building at the University. Aside from the University, the Governor also recently approved the establishment of the College of Health Technology, Ovrode in Isoko North Local Government Area of the state.

Other projects included the completion of Enwhe-Olomoro Road; Enhwe Internal Roads; Ongoing Enhwe – Uwheru Road, reconstruction of 24km Isoko ring Road from Ellu, Ovrode, Ofagbe, Orie-Irri, Okpe-Isoko, Uro-Irri and Ada-Irri road in Isoko North and Isoko South Local Government Areas.

It is also worthy to note that work has reached an advanced stage on the completion of the Isoko section of the Ughelli-Asaba Expressway. Governor Oborevwori has ensured that the project goes on uninhibited by making prompt payments for the contractors to remain on site all year round.

At a recent State Executive Council meeting held in August, the construction of Olomoro-Igbide Road; construction of Emevor-Ivrogbo-Orogun Road Phase 2; and the construction of Otekpo Road in Ellu, Isoko North were also approved.

Other projects are completed remedial works for the failed approach to the bridge at Bedesegba along Ohoror-Bomadi Road in Bomadi Local Government Area. Exco also approved the reconstruction of Ohoror-Bomadi Road; Ekeye-Ovedhe close in Okumagba Layout, Warri, internal roads and drains in Kurutie, Obitobon-Elolo-Ajaokurogbo-Orubu Road Phase 2, Ogidigben; Kurutie internal roads Phase 2; Rehabilitation of Odimodi, Ogulagha road in Burutu Local Government Area and the construction of rigid concrete pavement of Stadium Road, Ugborodo in Warri South-West Local Government Area.

Governor Oborevwori’s accomplishments are also evident in Delta Central Senatorial District, particularly through the ongoing flyover bridges and road expansion projects undertaken by construction giants, Julius Berger.

In Sapele metropolis, over 16 kilometers of roads construction with drainages are in progress to revitalize the town. These projects include; the reconstruction of Major Bowen Road from Okpe Road to New Ogorode Road, the construction of Benin Road from Green Egbedi Road at Olympia to Abeke Road, and the construction of Uko Road from Benin Road through Otuedor Road to Ugberikoko Road. Other projects include; the construction of Obule School Road from Orodje Grammar School to Okirigbagha by the Okirigwe Police Station, Alegbe Road from Abeke Road to New Ogorode Road, and the extension of Hausa Road from Ogodo Road to Commercial Avenue, among others.

Additional rehabilitation efforts in Sapele include; the Old Sapele-Warri Road from Amukpe Junction to Ikwewu Community, with a spur to Austin Ayemidejor Close, and the overlay of Okirighwre-Benin Road from Sapele-Warri Road to Gammon Bridge. Roads such as Orhorhor, Chechester, and Benjamin Oseregbaje are also being reconstructed.

Despite these significant infrastructural strides, a skit maker’s protest over road conditions in his area recently drew attention to Sapele for the wrong reasons. While it is his right to protest and demand government intervention, it was unfortunate that some bloggers falsely linked Governor Oborevwori and the state government to his alleged arrest. The Oborevwori administration values public feedback and firmly opposes any attempt to silence dissent. Therefore, the administration categorically dissociates itself from the skit maker’s arrest and any related actions.

In Ughelli North, the Oborevwori administration approved the construction of several new roads to alleviate traffic congestion at the popular Otovwodo junction. These projects include the construction of Uduere Road, Okogbe Road, Oyakemeagbegha Street, Ohre Street, and Edo Road. Additionally, the Okan Junction to Agbarho road received attention to ease traffic around the PTI Junction, Effurun Roundabout, and DSC Roundabout, with flyover construction underway.

In Okpe, some roads have been completed while some others are at completion stage, including the dualization of Ezesi Road in Orerokpe, Orerokpe-Okulohor-Oviri Road, Ugolo Road, and Ohorhe-Adagbrasa-Ugolo Road.

In Delta North Senatorial District, Isheagu-Ewulu Road and Bridge, the Okpanam-Ibusa bypass, which is resplendent of Oborevwori’s midas touch, remains a testament to the Governor’s determination to do MORE.

Similarly, the multi billion Naira Kwale-Beneku bridge linking Ndokwa West and Ndokwa East LGAs has continued with accelerated pace since Governor Oborevwori took over office, such that it is about 99 percent completed to the delight and appreciation of adjoining communities who will no longer commute by canoe, boat or pontoon.

It must further be pointed out that Governor Oborevwori inaugurated a chain of connecting roads in Asaba, as part of activities marking his 100 days in office. The roads, 29 in all, with drainages on both sides, though started by Senator Okowa, were completed by Oborevwori, including the strategic road leading to the Delta State Traditional Rulers Council.

Also, Rt Hon Oborevwori was in the campuses of Dennis Osadebay University, Anwai to inaugurate multiple projects, including ultra modern auditoriums and lecture theaters as part of his 100 days in office. Management and students of the institution attest to the Governor’s empathy and concern for their welfare.

The administration recently completed the Ugbolu Onwuka road and Ogbotobor Avenue in Oshimili South local government, while rehabilitation of Gerald Onianwa Crescent, Odigwe Juwah Avenue, Ify Okeke Street, Nkem Okwuofu Street, Victor Anene Street and MBA Road all in Asaba are in progress. The High Court building complex in Asaba has also been completed and inaugurated under the watch of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

The Governor has also approved award of contract for the construction of Okey and Iyke Oputa Street, Aboh in Ndokwa East, Issele-Azagba-Otulu Road in Aniocha North and South LGAs, projects which are meant to transform the outlook of those areas.

At the last State Executive Council meeting, Exco approved the building of a College of Medical Sciences at the Delta State University of Science and Technology, (DSUST) Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area of the state.

The construction of internal roads at the Headquarters of the 63 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Ibusa, in Oshimili North Local Government Area, construction of Aziken Avenue, DDPA Low Cost Housing Estate, Boji-Boji, Agbor in Ika South Local Government Area also got Exco’s approval.

Exco also approved the construction of Utagba-Uno/Ndemili Road phase 1, and Eweshi – Utagba-Uno Road, both in Ndokwa West Local Government Area. Construction of the main access road to the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun; construction of Sokoh Estate Road and Okito Street, Off Airport Road, Effurun, in Uwvie Local Government Area; the construction of internal roads in Kiagbodo phase 1, and the rehabilitation of Odimodi/Okonto/Ogulaha Road, both in Burutu Local Government Area.”

Similarly, Exco also approved the construction of Odoziobodo/Aninta Street, off Ezenei Avenue, Oshimili South LGA, rehabilitation of Ekakpamre/Ekrokpe/Usiefrun and Orhuwhorun Road in Ughelli South and Udu Local Government Areas, and the construction of Bezi Road, off College Road in Aladja in Udu Local Government Area.

Others include; construction of Uduophori Secondary Commercial School Road in Patani Local Government Area, construction of Ofuegbe Street, Amai in Ukwuani Local Government Area; construction of Oloma/Eyewuoma internal roads at Koko beach and the construction of Ogbogudu community road in Egbema, Warri North Local Government Area.

In just 16 months in office, Governor Oborevwori has continued to work in all parts of the state, leaving indelible footprints of his administration’s sagacity in the sands of time and one can only imagine what his achievements would look like when he rounds off his first term in office in 2027.

Sustainable Investment in Sports Good for National Development – Senator Ned Nwoko

ABUJA, NIGERIA — Distinguished Senator Ned Munir Nwoko, the lawmaker representing Delta North senatorial district and vice chairman senate committee on Sports, has stressed the importance of sports in national development and the need for all Nigerians to engage in sports, regardless of age.

The Senator who stated this while speaking during the 5Stars Premier League 2024 finale in Abuja on Saturday, emphasized that sports should not be seen as mere recreation but as a professional endeavor, with consistent investment needed at both grassroots and national levels.

Fielding questions at the event, Senator Ned Nwoko, a passionate advocate for sports development pointed out the challenges Nigeria faces in identifying and nurturing sporting talent, particularly lamenting the ad hoc preparations for international competitions like the Olympics. He said, “As a nation, we must make conscious efforts to invest in sports. Identifying talent remains a challenge, but the bigger issue lies in nurturing, funding, and preparing our athletes. We cannot continue to wait until two months before major competitions like the Olympics to provide support. We will never do well with such last-minute planning. Other nations camp their athletes for years—how do we compete with such preparedness?”

As the chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, Senator Ned Nwoko disclosed that the Committee has taken a firm position against this trend, calling for sustainable and consistent funding for athletes. “We don’t have to wait until a month or two before any competition to release funds. There must be consistent and sustainable funding to develop real, long-term plans that will yield results.”

The Delta North lawmaker, who founded the Sports University of Nigeria (SUN) to nurture young talents in over 27 sports disciplines while offering academic training, reiterated the need for a comprehensive approach to sports education.

Reflecting on his personal experience, Senator Ned Nwoko said, “I have always been involved in sports from my primary school days, through secondary school, and even in the universities I attended in England. Sports have always been part of my life, which is why I built the Sports University of Nigeria (SUN). We offer over 27 different sports, alongside academics, because we want to nurture well-rounded individuals—both athletes and scholars. Our goal is not just to create sports stars but to ensure they are also grounded in quality education, so they have something to fall back on after their sports careers.”

He also applauded the 5Stars Premier League for providing a platform for young talents to showcase their abilities, stating, “Programs like this are very useful because people who come to watch can spot two or three talents and invest in them, providing the support they need to grow. That is why I have supported this league from the beginning.”

The 6th season of the 5Stars Premier League concluded on Saturday, with Wireless FC of Abuja emerging as National Champions after defeating OjoduCity FC of Lagos. The league, which started on June 15, spanned 18 weeks across Abuja, Kwara, Kaduna, and Lagos.

Nigerians Need to be Educated on Stressors, Coping Strategies Against Mental Health Disorders- Foundation

An empowerment foundation, Webmark Empowerment Foundation has advocated the need to educate Nigerians on strategies to identify stressors and be conversant with with our to cope with them in order to significantly reduce the risk of mental health disorders in the country.

The foundation said there is an urgent need to raise an awareness about the critical impact of stressors on mental health and the proactive measures that can be taken to prevent mental health disorders across the country, during a virtual event it held on Friday in Abuja in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Lugbe FHA Estate, Connect Her Network Foundation, and Secure the Future International Initiative to commemorate the 2024 World Mental Health Day themed “Health at Work”.

The World Mental Health Day is celebrated annually on Oct. 10, to raise awareness about mental health around the world and to mobilise efforts to support those experiencing mental health issues.

Speaking at the event, a Mental Health rehabilitation professional, Dr. Saadatu Adamu, highlighted the psychological effects of stress and its potential to lead to mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression.

She said: “Mental health is how we think, feel and act. Stress is a silent epidemic that can manifest in various ways, affecting not just individuals but an entire society.”

She added that: “By learning to identify stressors and implementing coping strategies, we can significantly reduce the risk of mental health disorders.”

Adamu also recommended some practical techniques for stress management, including mindfulness practices, physical exercise, and the importance of social support systems.

Also speaking, Webmark Empowerment Foundation trustee member, Dr. Maha Michael said that one in four Nigerians, approximately fifty million people, are suffering from some sort of mental illness according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Concerned about these statistics, he advised citizens to take their mental health more seriously especially with the pressure of prevailing economic challenges.

He also noted the growing concern over the mental health crisis exacerbated by various societal pressures, including economic instability, social isolation, and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Michael added that recognising and addressing these stressors is essential for fostering a healthier society.

On her part, founder Connect Her Network (known for empowering women and girls),

She said: “Women and girls are particularly susceptible to stressors related to societal expectations and economic pressures. It is crucial to provide them with the tools and resources to manage their mental health effectively.”

Ojiah also highlighted the crucial role of mental health to overall wellbeing, saying that good health encompassed physical, mental, social, spiritual, and financial aspects; going beyond the mere absence of diseases or infirmity.

Common currency, language can transform economic, cultural landscape in Africa -Says Senator Nwoko

Senator Ned Munir Nwoko has made case for the need for an African currency and a common language to unify the continent.

Speaking on Friday night at a power room session, “The Africa We See,” hosted by Elevate Africa at Transcorp Hilton, Senator Ned Nwoko reiterated the need for an African currency and a common language and how these two steps could transform Africa’s economic and cultural landscape.

“We don’t need the dollar, we don’t need euros. What we need is an African currency that will enable us to trade among ourselves,” Senator Ned Nwoko said.

He explained that relying on foreign currencies continues to limit Africa’s economic potential and stifles trade between African nations.

According to the billionaire businessman and chairman of Senate committee on reparations and repatriation, a single African currency would make trade more efficient and empower the continent to stand stronger on the global stage.

Reflecting on Africa’s colonial history, the legal luminary noted that languages like English, French, and German were imposed by partitioners.

However, the continent is home to many indigenous languages, such as Swahili, Hausa, Arabic, and Yoruba, which are spoken across multiple countries.

“We’ve seen the effects of colonialism with languages like English, French, and German imposed on us, but we have rich indigenous languages like Swahili, Hausa, Yoruba, and Arabic,” he said.

He believes that adopting one of these languages as a pan-African language could strengthen unity and cultural identity.

Senator Ned Nwoko, however, noted that none of this can be achieved without strong leadership.

“We need political leaders who are willing to put Africa first, leaders who are truly passionate about building a new Africa,” he stressed.

The event was part of Elevate Africa’s ongoing series of discussions focused on shaping a vision for a more united and prosperous Africa.

Infrastructure Development in Delta North: Senator Ned Nwoko Engages Minister of Niger Delta Affairs

ABUJA – Senator Ned Munir Nwoko, representing Delta North Senatorial District, on Thursday, October 10, paid a visit to the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs to discuss ongoing infrastructure developments in Niger Delta, with a particular focus on his Delta North constituency.

Received by the Minister, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, the Senator’s visit was aimed at reviewing development plans and discussing potential partnerships for 2025.

This strategic visit follows closely on the heels of similar engagements with the Minister of Works, David Umahi, as well as the Managing Director of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Engineer Chukwuemeka Agbasi.

In both visits, the Senator raised concerns about worsening condition of the Lagos-Asaba Expressway, particularly the stretch between Alifekide and the Asaba Bridge End, which had become hazardous and caused numerous fatalities.

Following those visits, which served as a decisive push, rehabilitation work has commenced on the damaged sections of the road.

Strategic engagements like these are very central to Senator Ned Nwoko’s approach, having pledged and demonstrated commitment to ensuring that his senatorial district does not miss out on critical infrastructure development.

Challenge the system and fight for justice always -Senator Nwoko tells lawyers

Senator Ned Nwoko representing Delta North in the National Assembly has called on lawyers to challenge the system and fight for justice at every available opportunity.

In a post on X, Senator Nwoko insisted that any lawyer who hesitates in taking up crucial brief might not go far in the legal profession. He noted that the calling of lawyers is for advocacy and fighting for the people without fear or favour.

His admonition to lawyers was part of his statement during the investiture ceremony of some lawyers as Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN) a few weeks ago in Abuja.

His assertion may be why he is vigorously pulling relevant government agencies to ensure the development of the Delta North Senatorial district, a zone he represents in the upper chamber of the national assembly.

Senator Nwoko, who has raised several motions and bills aimed at uplifting living conditions of Nigerians and his constituents, is poised to ensure that lives of his constituents and the generality of Nigerians are improved.

A philanthropist of repute, Senator Nwoko has introduced different life changing programs for his constituents with the objective of boosting their living conditions and opening vista of life opportunities for them.

As an already made man, Nwoko did not go to the Senate for personal benefit but to ensure that what is due to his constituents gets to them as at when due. This he has pursued immediately he stepped his feet in the Senate in June 2023.

As a man with a large heart, he is committed to the overall development of his people. He is also pursuing infrastructure development of his zone. This is why he visited the minister of works, David Umahi, and the director general of Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to ensure speedy repair of failed portions of federal roads in his constituency.

Another smart move of the Senator was the recent bill to upgrade the Federal College of Education (Technical) Asaba to a federal university of technology. This move was widely applauded by his constituents who hailed him for being a visionary and people oriented leader.

People of Delta North had argued that since Delta North began producing representatives at the National Assembly, no senator has ever made smart and selfless moves as Senator Nwoko had done. Upgrading the federal college of education to university status will boost the standing of Asaba and write his name in gold as the only senator who brought an enduring project to the senatorial district.

Many Deltans, not just his constituents had craved for a federal university in Delta state. The intervention of Senator Ned Nwoko, who has spent just a year and few months in the senate is bringing this to reality. It is now that the people of Delta North have got it right in the election of a senator since 1999.

Majority of right thinking Anioma people are saying this is just the beginning of good things coming to Delta North from their Senator. It is believed that in the coming years, Senator Nwoko will introduce bigger and mouth watering projects that will make the people say ‘we have not found it in this fashion.” Yes, that is true representation. A representation devoid of personal pursuit and self aggrandizement.

His moves, statements, motions and bills all testify to a man who is hell-bent on ensuring good life for all Nigerians, not only his constituents. He believes that it is possible to live a comfortable life in Nigeria, hence he is advocating for ptojects and programs to boost living conditions and make Nigeria people happy.

Being a ready made man, he is not interested in being happy alone, he wants his constituents and as many Nigerians as can be lifted from poverty to be pulled out of the conodrum of poverty and pain. He is pained that many Nigerians are wallowing in poverty and penury. For him, this is not the vision for a greater Nigeria.

He wants good health for all Nigerians. He wants all Nigerians to ply smooth and beautiful roads across the country. Yes, he wants the best of education for all. These and more form the fulcrum of his drive for his constituents and the larger Nigerian populace.

Senator Nwoko, though a first term Senator in the Senate, having served in the house of representatives between 1999 and 2003, stands tall among his colleagues in the red chamber. He is one of the Senators who have presented highest number of motions and bills in the senate.

He is respected among his colleagues. This is why he is always selected to be in most important committees in the Senate. His presence in the Senate and advocacy led to the creation of the Senate committee for reparations and repatriation to move the western world to repair damages done to Nigeria and Africa during the era of slave trade.

So, Anioma people have got the needed representative at the senate and it behoves on all good spirited Anioma sons and daughters to queue behind him to drive the development of Delta North. This is the man we have been waiting for in Delta North. He has the vision, the drive, the connection (national and international) and the political will to serve the people of Delta North.

What Anioma people need at this time is to stand behind him and support his dream. The reason is simple. He has a good mind and his vision is very clear.

Defence Minister praises Nigerian Army for Niger Delta operations

The Minister of Defence, His Excellency Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has commended the Nigerian Army (NA) for its significant efforts in enhancing security and promoting economic stability in the Niger Delta Region (NDR).
During his maiden operational visit to the Headquarters of 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, the Minister lauded the Army’s pivotal role in increasing national oil production and curbing crude oil theft.
This commendation was conveyed in a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director of 6 Division Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Danjuma Jonah Danjuma.

“The nation relies on your continued efforts to achieve an oil production target of 2.3 million barrels per day,” the Minister remarked, acknowledging the increase in production from 1.4 to 1.7 million barrels per day. He stressed that sustaining this upward trajectory is crucial to stabilizing the country’s economy for the collective benefit of all Nigerians.
The primary purpose of the Minister’s visit was to encourage the troops and express appreciation for their dedication, particularly in combating oil theft in the NDR. He commended 6 Division for its operational achievements and highlighted the Army’s commitment to improving the welfare of its personnel, referencing the newly constructed residences for senior officers that were inaugurated during his visit.
In his briefing, Major General Jamal Abdussalam, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 6 Division, outlined the Division’s successes in anti-illegal bunkering operations. He reaffirmed the Division’s commitment to denying oil thieves freedom of action and creating a secure environment for oil companies to conduct their operations effectively.

Israel’s New Displacement Order: Aid Organisations Warn of Escalation of Humanitarian Catastrophe in Gaza

Aid organisations have warned of dramatic escalation of humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza following Israel issuance of new mass displacement orders to Palestinian occupying in part of the war-torn city.

A statement on Wednesday signed by a conglomerate of aid organisations including ActionAid, Action for Humanity, CARE International, Danish Refugee Council (DRC), DanChurchAid (DCA), Gender Action for Peace and Security (GAPS), HelpAge International, Humanity & Inclusion/ Handicap International (HI), Islamic Relief
Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP), Médecins du Monde France, Spain and Switzerland, Middle East Children’s Alliance (MECA), Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA)
Oxfam, Plan International, Premiere Urgence Internationale, Save the Children, Terre des Hommes Italia, The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), and War Child warned that Israel’s new displacement orders in northern Gaza threaten to force civilians into ever-shrinking areas and endanger aid operations.

The statement read that: “On 6 October 2024, Israel issued new mass displacement orders targeting the remaining Palestinians of the northern Gaza Strip, ordering them to leave to the south. This move will worsen the already dire humanitarian situation in the north and has prevented international and national humanitarian organisations from carrying out already very limited life-saving aid operations. The new orders have obstructed humanitarian actors from providing necessities such as health services, clean water, food and nutrition services, taking away the remaining lifelines for the civilian population.”

It added that: “Nowhere in Gaza is safe for civilians. Given the severity of the needs, humanitarian actors must be able to distribute aid and continue their work, without threat of displacement or military operations. The undersigned aid organisations urge all parties to the conflict to uphold their obligations to protect civilians and facilitate unhindered humanitarian access at all times.”

The statement added that: “The UN estimates 400,000 people remain in the north. On Sunday, Israel ordered residents to flee through dangerous routes to already overcrowded areas such as Al-Mawasi in the south. These areas remain insecure with active fighting and routine airstrikes, despite being unilaterally designated by Israel as a “humanitarian zone”. Given the short notice to move and the large population in the affected area, many are likely to remain, increasing the risk of further civilian casualties.

“The undersigned aid organisations demand the protection of all civilians in line with international humanitarian law and are particularly concerned about children, pregnant women with complications or at advanced stages of pregnancy and other people who are sick, older people, persons with disabilities, or are otherwise unable to leave. The new orders impact Palestinians living close to the Netzarim corridor. Further reports indicate that Israel intends to expand the Netzarim corridor to reinforce the separation between the north and south, effectively preventing people from returning north and further restricting aid flow to a population already enduring catastrophic levels of hunger.

“Civilians who do not leave the area do not lose their right to protection. Under international humanitarian law, Israel is defined as the occupying power and a party to the conflict. Both roles carry obligations to guarantee the protection of the civilian population and facilitate their unhindered access to humanitarian aid.

According to the statement, Paula Gaviria Betancur, UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights of internally displaced persons has said that “Israel is seeking to permanently alter the composition of Gaza’s population with ever-expanding evacuation orders and widespread and systematic attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure”, in violation of IHL.

The aid organisations call for a permanent ceasefire, the protection of civilians and a scale up of humanitarian aid.

The aid organisations noted that the forcible transfer of Palestinian civilians in Gaza is a grave breach of the Fourth Geneva Convention and does not amount to a permissible evacuation, adding that relocation areas have not provided safety, adequate shelter or essential services, and there has also been no guarantee that displaced populations will be able to return once hostilities end.

OPINION: Why Ndigbo Should Stand United for Anioma State

By Chukwuma Okorama

The creation of Anioma State does not only present a practical and strategic solution to the numerical imbalance facing Ndigbo. Looking at the landmass of the existing states in the South-East, it becomes even clearer why Anioma is the best candidate for state creation

Consider this: the five states in the South-East—Anambra (4,844 km²), Imo (5,530 km²), Ebonyi (5,670 km²), Abia (6,320 km²), and Enugu (7,161 km²) – are smaller in landmass compared to many other states across Nigeria. The creation of Anioma State, with an approximate landmass of 5,930 square kilometers, and comprising nine Local Government Areas—Aniocha North, Aniocha South, Ika North East, Ika South, Ndokwa East, Ndokwa West, Oshimili North, Oshimili South, and Ukwuani – each with its own unique economic and cultural contributions to the region, presents a balanced and pragmatic solution to this disparity.

Dividing any of these existing South-Eastern states to create an additional state would only fragment smaller states further. The creation of Anioma State, on the other hand, avoids this dilemma, and offers a viable new state for Ndigbo without undermining the integrity of the current South-East states.

This is one of the compelling reasons why Anioma is a preferred new state for Ndigbo—an opportunity to strengthen the South-East without compromising the size or capacity of the existing states.

Anioma State is not only justifiable by its landmass but economically viable. The nine local government areas that make up Anioma are rich in both human and natural resources. The region boasts significant oil and gas reserves, especially in Ndokwa West and Ndokwa East, where multinational oil companies like Agip and Sterling Global operate.

In addition to oil and gas, Anioma is also an agricultural powerhouse. The region’s fertile lands are well-suited for the cultivation of crops like cassava, yams, and palm produce, making it a vital component of the region’s food security strategy. The Anioma people are industrious and entrepreneurial, and their agricultural output—if further supported by state-specific policies—could lead to notable improvements in the nation’s agricultural economy.

Moreover, the region’s human capital is exceptional. Anioma has produced some of Nigeria’s brightest minds in academia, business, public service, and the arts. This wealth of talent will ensure that the new state is well-governed and that its resources are harnessed efficiently for development.

Why balkanize and weaken the already existing South Eastern states that are relatively small in sizes when there is a viable alternative in Anioma, which is both geographically and politically ready for statehood?

Rather than carving out a new state from the already small landmass of Anambra, Imo, Ebonyi, or any other South-East state, Anioma provides a better path forward.

He stated that since 1974, when Shell (SPDC) started operations in Oboro, the Egberi family has been unjustly deprived of their due royalty payments and incidental benefits by Oboro Community. That their complaints brought about unexpected offensive proclamations, detentions, extortions and banishment of persons and their families by the Community Executive. All practices, customs, and conventions are trans-generational and carried out for maintenance of peace, security, and good governance of the Community. He gave a catalogue of the steps the community under his leadership had taken to resolve the issue without success.
After due mediation process, it was resolved.

Don’t give bribes to process pension benefits, Delta Govt warns retirees

Chairman, Delta State Bureau for Pension, Sir Edwin Ogidi-Gbegbaje, has warned retirees from the State Public Service not to give bribe to anyone for processing pension benefits.

The pension boss gave the charge when the executives and members of the Asaba Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) paid him a courtesy visit on Monday in Asaba.

Ogidigbegbaje, said that the Bureau has ensured that the state retirees would not have to spend years before getting their pension and retirement benefits.

He noted that it was absurd for anyone to pay a dime to any officer for the processing of their pension benefits, adding that the bureau would deal decisively with anyone caught in the act.

He said regrettably there could be allegation of fraud against our officials, adding that journalist should investigate and establish that fact before publishing their reports.

He said, ” Nobody is expected to pay a dime to access his pension benefits in the state.

“Anybody who pays money to anyone, for the sake of his or her benefits to be processed, the person is acting on his own. Such person does not have the instruction of the bureau to do so.”

He tasked journalist to ensure balanced reportage and to check the excesses of quacks on the social media.

He cautioned journalist against character assassination, adding that reputation took years to build and should not be damaged in a jiffy by quacks on the social media.

Also, Mr Lawson Efenudu, Secretary to the Bureau, lauded the leadership role of the Bureau Chairman, Ogidigbegbaje which has brought a new lease of life into the scheme.

He said that the Bureau was committed to ensuring prompt payment of the retirees benefits both to the new and old pension scheme pensoners which runs side by side in the state.

He lauded the immediate past Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa for depleting the pension liabilities and thanked Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori for his commitment towards pensioner and retirees plight.

Earlier, the Chairman, Asaba Correspondents Chapel, Comrade Ifeanyi Olannye, said that the visit was to congratulate the Chairman on his appointment.

“Primarily, we are here to congratulate you on your appointment and we urge you to deploy that determination and zeal that we have known you for into ensuring prompt payment of the retirement benefits and pension to retirees of the state workforce.

“We have observed with nostalgia the pains retirees go through in the country, Delta not exempted, while trying to access their pension. More worrisome is that many have died without accessing their benefits due to delay occasioned by bureaucracy in government,” he said.

He lauded Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori for the prompt intervention to address the challenges of pensioner and retirees of the state public service.

We are not, however, unmindful of the commitment of His Excellency, Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori, who immediately extend his magnanimity by releasing certain amount running into billions of naira to ensure the payment of pension arrears for state and local government workers as soon as he stepped into office.

We also have no doubt that in line with the Governor’s M.O.R.E Agenda, and with you, Sir Edwin Ogidigbegbaje on the saddle as the Chairman, State Bureau for Pension, state workers are in for a fair and equitable deal as retirees of the state government would have no cause to worry.

While we congratulate you on your new but demanding appointment, we urge you to remain committed to delivering the dividends of democracy in order to put smiles on the faces of state retirees to enable them live longer by ensuring prompt payment of their retirement benefits and pension.

It has ,therefore, become necessary to partner with you to further deepen the Gov. Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E. Agenda geared towards addressing the old age issues relating to pension and retirees challenge in the state.

Canadian lady arrested with drugs at Lagos airport as NDLEA intercepts N9b worth opioids in Rivers

A 41-year-old Canadian lady, Adrienne Munju has been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos for importing large consignment of ‘Canadian Loud’, a strong strain of synthetic cannabis into Nigeria.

The suspect was arrested during the inward clearance of passengers on KLM airline flight from Canada at the terminal 1 of the Lagos airport last Thursday.

During a joint examination of her three bags, Adrienne who was coming to Nigeria for the first time was found with 74 parcels of the illicit substance weighing 35.2 kilogrammes stuffed in two of her three bags.

In her statement, she claimed she was recruited to traffic the consignment through an online platform for 10,000 Canadian dollars, which was to be paid upon successful delivery in Lagos.

She confessed the offer was taken because she needed the money to pay for her ongoing master’s degree programme in Canada.

In another arrest, NDLEA operatives at the Port Harcourt Ports, Onne, Rivers state intercepted 13,298,000 pills of opioids including Tramadol, Tramaking Quick Action Tramadol, Tamol-X, Royal Tapentadol and Carisoprodol as well as 338, 253 bottles of codeine based cough syrup, all worth over
N9 billion in street value.

The spokesman of the NDLEA, Femi Babafemi in a statement on Sunday, said the opioids were recovered in three containers coming from India, targeted by the NDLEA during a 100% joint examination of the cargoes with men of the Nigerian Customs and other port stakeholders last Wednesday and Thursday.

Similarly, NDLEA operatives at the Tincan seaport in Lagos last Thursday intercepted 100 parcels of Canadian Loud weighing 50 kilogrammes. The consignment was packed in 20 parcels each in five jumbo bags concealed in a container with four units of imported vehicles that came from Canada.

Babafemi said though the container had earlier been cleared out of the ESS Libra Bonded Terminal in Ikorodu but based on credible intelligence, NDLEA operatives were able to trace it to a warehouse in Ikorodu where the illicit consignments were discovered in one of the imported vehicles, a Toyota Sienna bus.

He added that a suspect, Abubakar Ibrahim has already been taken into custody in connection with the seizure.

In Taraba, NDLEA officers last Thursday intercepted a commercial bus marked JAL 198 YQ coming from Onitsha, Anambra state to Jalingo. Large quantities of opioids: tramadol, rohypnol and codeine-based syrup concealed in body compartments of the vehicle were recovered when it was searched, while two suspects: Pako Thomas and Emmanuel Anyigor were arrested.

Also in Taraba, another suspect, Chibuzor Okafor was arrested at Wukari last Wednesday with 80 blocks of cannabis weighing 38 kilogrammes hidden in bags of garri.

In Lagos, a suspect Bolanle Ajenifuja was last Friday arrested at Afo – Media area of Ojo where 700 litres of skuchies, a mixture of local chapman and cocktail of illicit drugs were recovered from her, while three suspects: Ezekiel Akpele; Elijah Michael; and Goddard John, were nabbed same day when NDLEA operatives raided two cannabis farms located at bridge camp, a boundary community between Edo and Ondo states. Not less than 9,966.3 kilogrammes of the substance was destroyed on over three hectares of farmland with 48 kilogrammes of the already processed psychoactive substance recovered.

Babafemi said with the same vigour, commands and formations of the agency across the country continued their War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitization activities to schools, worship centres, work places and communities among others in the past week.

Meanwhile, the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen.Buba Marwa (Rtd), while commending the officers and men of MMIA, Tincan, PHPC, Lagos, Edo, and Taraba commands of the agency for the arrests and seizures, stated that their operational successes and those of their compatriots across the country especially their balanced approach to drug supply reduction and drug demand reduction efforts are well appreciated.

“It is a worthy addition to the growing number of Secondary schools in Delta State. Our people love education, and this school will ensure that some of the children in the riverine communities will not be denied the benefit of quality secondary education.

“Let me emphasise once again that this administration is committed to the development of every part of the state.
As part of our vision for meaningful development, the Executive Council this week approved the rehabilitation/reconstruction of the 12.1 kilometre Odimodi-Okuntu-Ogulagha Road at a total cost of N5.2b. The contractor is expected to mobilise to site in the shortest possible time.

“The road is strategic to the economy of the communities around here, and when completed will eradicate the sufferings commuters are currently experiencing on the road. I assure all Deltans and residents in the state that the MORE agenda is on course.”

At Okerenkoko, Governor Oborevwori described the Nigerian Maritime University as one of a kind specialised institution established to produce graduates with unique skill sets, knowledge, and capacity to revolutionize Nigeria’s vast maritime sector.

“It has strong potentials for urbanisation, while providing employment and retail business opportunities in the host community and environs.

“The Lecture Hall we are commissioning today is a good example of what can happen when there is cooperation between the federal and state governments.

“So, I am proud that we can deploy our resources to build this lecture Hall even though it is a federal institution. This is consistent with our promise to provide meaningful development, which is the first pillar of the MORE agenda.

“As I have always said, peace is a prerequisite for meaningful development and I hope that going forward, the peace we are currently enjoying will be sustained so that the community can reap the full benefits of having a university of this nature”.

Governor Oborevwori who gave immediate approval for the construction of road to the University’s permanent site, said riverine communities were very dear to his adminstration hence he created the Directorate of Riverine Infrastructural Development.

“I can assure you that there will continue to be enhanced peace and security across the state and once there is unity and peace development will surely come,” he added.

In his welcome remarks, Chairman of DESOPADEC, Olorogun John Nani, said the completion and inauguration of the project was a clear demonstration of the fact that DESOPADEC was doing a lot for oil producing communities.

Member Representing Burutu Federal Constituency, Hon. Julius Pondi commended Governor Oborevwori for demonstrating that riverine communities could be developed like their upland counterparts.

In his remark, immediate past Deputy Governor of the state, Barr Kingsley Otuaro traced the establishment and development of the Maritime University to the Niger Delta agitation and commended the Delta State Government for its several interventions in the University.

In his speech, Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Emmanuel Adigio, lauded the governor for lending a hand of intervention to the institution through the construction of a faculty complex in the university.

Africa, Americas Unite at Landmark Summit to Plan Shared Tourism Future

Tourism leaders from both Africa and the Americas have jointly committed to working together to make the sector a pillar of collective sustainable and inclusive development across both continents.

The “Punta Cana Declaration” was adopted at the conclusion of the very first joint meeting of UN Tourism’s Regional Commissions for Africa and the Americas. Recognizing the historic ties between the two regions, as well their unique and complementary cultures, the Summit served as a landmark platform for strengthened cooperation, capitalizing on innovation, education, investments and creative industries for the future development of tourism.

UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said: “This summit offers a unique platform to forge connections and build bridges between Africa and the Americas, create strategic cross-regional partnerships, foster South-South cooperation projects, all for the benefit of the tourism sector of the two regions.”

UN Tourism Executive Director Natalia Bayona said: “Africa and the Americas are endowed with rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes, and profound historical connections. Yet, we recognize that due to multiple challenges—such as limited connectivity, regulatory and administrative barriers, and a lack of mutual market awareness—our cross-tourism relationship is not as strong as it could and should be.

Our goal today is to address these challenges head-on, fostering collaboration that will drive economic development, promote cultural exchange, and encourage sustainable practices benefiting all our communities.”

The Punta Cana Declaration set out a set of shared commitments for the development of tourism as a driver of inclusive development. Through the Declaration, tourism leaders from both regions recognize the important need to “intensify joint efforts to promote sustainable development” through tourism.

The signatories of the Declaration signalled their intention to “redouble their efforts”, most notably in:

  • Strategic investments: To strengthen public-private partnerships, stimulate investments into the sector, and prioritize investments through effective policymaking. Also, to boost connectivity between the two regions, both in terms of improved air links as well as strengthened cultural exchange.
  • Skills development and training: To prioritize investment in tourism education and training, to expand access to online and offline learning and to promote the use of innovation and new digital skills to enhance the knowledge of the tourism workforce.
  • Innovation: To support competitions for start-up enterprises and entrepreneurs in both regions, to better support MSMEs, including in rural communities, and to promote innovative solutions focused on sustainability and climate action.
  • Creative industries: To promote the role of the cultural and creative industries in the tourism sector, including through funding for projects with the potential to attract tourists and grow new and diverse destinations and cultural routes, and to ensure the benefits the sector delivers are focused on social and inclusive development.
  • Inter-regional cooperation: To support market analysis and other research to identify potential areas of shared growth and opportunity, to develop shared strategies for tourism development, including through digital media, new products and international tourism trade fairs.

Delta Govt approves judicial commission to look into land, security issues within Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom

The Delta State Government has approved for a judicial commission to look into the land, security issues within Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom. This stems from the problems identified by the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku and other community members as to the security challenges and land issues.

In the interim, the government has requested that the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku take direct control of all boundary and satellite communities until the judicial commission completes its work within sixty days. The directive would affect the Okwabani’s who are Chiefs in the satellite communities as the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku would have to take direct control of those communities.

Commenting on the development, the Palace Secretary to the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku Prince Ifeakanachukwu Emordi welcomed the decision of the Delta State government and assured the governor of his full support to ensure implementation of the decision. The Palace Secretary warned all parties to stay away from land grabbing and stated that anyone who caused problems would be referred immediately to the police for investigation and prosecution.

Other areas the Judicial Commission would look into would be the contested Iyase Chieftaincy title.

Strategic engagement: Oborevwori plans town hall meetings with Deltans

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Wednesday, said he would hold town hall meetings across local government areas in the state, as part of his administration’s strategic engagements with the people.

He also said his administration was working to ensure every local government benefited from massive road construction with the provision of no fewer than N1billion for roads in each LGA in the 2024 budget.

Governor Oborevwori disclosed this when he received on courtesy visit, the State Executive of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) led by Rev. Lucky Osagbakhoe, at Government House, Asaba.

He lauded the leadership of CAN for the visit, adding that it was an eloquent testament to the strong partnership between the government and faith-based organisations in the state.

He also commended the fathers of faith for their steadfastness and the commitment of church leaders who had continued to uphold the government and Deltans in their prayers and supplications to God, saying; “the prayers of the Church have been a stabilising force for the government of Delta State.”

Governor Oborevwori, who was responding to calls for town hall meetings, said: “We know it is necessary and we are doing a lot to touch all the local government areas so that when we hold the town hall meetings, we have things to showcase to them.

“A lot of projects are going on across the state and in each local government area, we made the provision of not less than N1billion in the 2024 budget for road construction.”

On the issue of high cost of living, he said, “we have been doing a lot of empowerment programmes in the past few months. A few weeks ago, we did the MORE grant where we empowered 5,000 persons.

“A few days ago, too, we flagged off the distribution of fertiliser and other agricultural inputs to over 6,000 persons in Delta State.

“The hard times we are facing now are not peculiar to Delta State, but when you compare what we are doing in Delta with other states and with our huge work force, you will see that we are doing our best.

“We are doing a lot of engagements because if we were not doing that, during the last End bad Governance protests, you would have seen something different.

“This is because Delta State was among the flash point states that was expected to have problems. We could see that there was no protest here yesterday because we are dialoguing and we believe in dialogue, rather than confrontation.

“I want to solicit again that you continue to put the government, both at the national and sub-national levels, in prayers because, prayers are very necessary for leaders to focus and think very well on how to provide good governance for the people.”

Earlier, the State Chairman of CAN, Rev. Lucky Osagbakhoe, who congratulated Governor Oborevwori on his victory at the 2023 gubernatorial poll and subsequent victories at various courts, told him that they were in Government House on a courtesy visit.

He disclosed that the Delta State Chapter of CAN had existed for many years, adding that the association had been making very useful contributions to the peace, progress, unity and the development of the state through her leadership structure.

According to him, Delta State Chapter of CAN would, by the special grace of God, continue to work towards promoting unity in the body of Christ in the state and throughout the country at large.

He applauded the governor for his administration’s urban renewal drive, especially through road construction and reconstruction, adding that members of the association were pleased with the infrastructural development initiative of his administration.

“We, also, like to acknowledge your administration’s peace building efforts, economic recovery and social safety nets and many other development in the state,” the Christian cleric said, even as he harped on the need for the governor to have town hall meetings in the three senatorial districts of the state to enable him feel the pulse of the people.
