Those who are avowed watchers of Edo politics would agree with me that something unusual is happening, especially at the twilight of the present campaign season.
For the first time in a long while, no political bloc ( outside the usual emotionally partisan claims) can confidently lay claim to full dominance of the stakes, before a gubernatorial election in Edo State. And this is very interesting.
Again, less than 5 weeks to the polls, the politically responsive and enlightened people of Edo state are yet to be generally and overwhelmingly swayed to a particular corner, conquered by a deep-rooted conviction about a particular candidate or political party as was the case in the recent past.
This owes largely to several remote and immediate factors which need to be appreciated and understood, at least, at the level of caution, to help avoid the pitfalls of the past.
One of the key factors responsible for this strange political ambivalence, caused by both centripetal and centrifugal forces vying for space in Osadebey house, is the deep-seated animosity of the people against hegemonic political parties who have lied to them severely and severally, to erode their confidence in anything that looks like a déjà vu, anytime these same people come closer to seek for favour from them, one more time.
Such painstakingness and circumspection, mixed with apathy, are cleverly making people undecided while embracing new options and nuances all the same.
By this time and at this level of preparation and desperation by political parties in the previous governorship elections, chants like “Edo no be Lagos” by the Edo people in readiness to match federal might with local arsenal were in the air. But once beaten, twice shy.
This time around, the people are waiting for a new breed, a new bride and a “newbie” like the candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, Dr Azemhe Azena, who is the first among the fifteen new voices calling for a change.
Here’s a humble Philanthropist of no mean repute, who has dedicated his life to the emancipation of the downtrodden, especially the youth demographic in Edo state, through his Pastoral calling and advocacy, using his popular youth-centric Foundations.
His youthfulness and vigour coupled with vision and zesty disposition is what Edo people need, to escape the deception and underdevelopment championed by political godfathers and their cronies, as witnessed in the recent past.
The coast is clear, and the people, who have had enough from the same cyclical ruling elite in the past, are ready for a change. We have tried and tested others; let us look beyond these self-proclaimed and widely acclaimed popular political nests that have brought us to our present unenviable condition of privation and want. Dr Azemhe Azena of the NNPP is the change we all deserve.

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Tuesday, said the Ubu bridge along sector C1 of the ongoing Ughelli-Asaba Road dualisation project at Ogwashi-Uku in Aniocha South Local Government Area would be ready in December, 2024.
Governor Oborevwori disclosed this during inspection of the project including the completed 9.1km Isheagu-Ewulu Road where he frowned at the poor delivery of the side drains.
The Governor who undertook the inspection on a day the state was celebrating 33rd anniversary of it’s creation, said the inspection was part of activities to mark the anniversary.
He said: “We thank God for the anniversary of Delta state today. After our thanksgiving, we felt it was necessary for us to come and inspect some of the works we are doing.
“We are just coming from Isheagu/Ewulu Road that’s a 9.1km road. They have done the binding and the wearing course, we are satisfied with the asphalt work.
“But we are having a little issue with the drains which we have asked them make some corrections before we can commission the project. Without that I will not commissioning the project.
“We are here now to inspect this Sector C1. This is one of the most critical part of the dualisation of Ughelli/Asaba road. This is not the first time I am coming here. I have been here three times and you can see now that they are having challenges with the rains.
“You heard the supervisor who explained that the rains are disturbing them. But the good thing is that they have assured us that by December, they will be able to finish the bridge.
“Once they are able to do that, the other work will no longer be too difficult. They don’t have any reason not to work because they are on ISPO, so they don’t lack money”.
On why he embarked on Road inspection on a day Deltans are celebrating anniversary of the state creation, he said; “we first gave thanks to God and thereafter decided to go to work because today is a working day. We cannot just do thanksgiving and go home to celebrate.
“Some people are doing only celebration today but I and my team decided to use today also to inspect important infrastructure as part of activities to mark the state creation anniversary.”
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar has decried the spate of security threats in Africa and its implications for the continent’s development.
The minister made the lamented while speaking at the Ministerial Meeting of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) held from August 24th to 25th, 2024 in Tokyo, Japan.
He said that Africa’s security and development landscape is increasingly witnessing complex threats in the form of terrorism and transnational organized crimes, noting that these vices are destabilising Africa’s peace and security architecture, undermining the pursuit of democracy and good governance, and disincentivising foreign direct investors from investing on the continent.
He however reiterated Africa’s commitment to leveraging the TICAD’s multidimensional approaches to addressing the root drivers of the security challenges encumbering its development.
Tuggar also stated that the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, the presence of foreign mercenaries, the impact of climate change, and the availability of safe havens encouraging illicit financial flows are worrisome to the continent, adding that the continent loses an estimated US$88.6 billion annually to illicit flows or the equivalent of 3% of its GDP.
Tuggar also drew attention to the activities of cryptocurrency pirates undermining macroeconomic reforms on the continent by attacking local currencies.
He posited these exogenous factors are responsible for the Unconstitutional Change of Governments (UCGs) being witnessed on the continent, stressing that these security challenges could be the reason for the perceived decline in Japanese investment in Africa.
He, however, encouraged Japan not to shy away, but to work with African leaders and other African development partners towards tackling the challenges, while equally emphasising that multidimensional support from Japan and other partners is required to actualise the global desire for a developed Africa and called for increased support in addressing the security concerns in the Lake Chad region, the Great Lakes, and the Sahel regions, as well as Sudan, Somalia, and other parts of Africa currently facing security challenges.
The minister also proposed that the TICAD 9 Summit should focus on providing strategic infrastructure, foreign direct investments, capacity building, and the transfer of technology to support the growth of indigenous entrepreneurship, and innovation as well as engage in the progressive empowerment of women and youths in Africa.
He called on Japan to join Africa in pushing for the reform of the United Nations Security Council in support of Africa’s quest for fair and equitable representation in the Security Council, which he said is ethically just and temporally restitutive. He said that Africa deserves two seats in the permanent and non–permanent categories, as encapsulated in the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration.
Approximately $300 million is needed over the next five years to initiate programmes aimed at building peace in West Africa sub-region.
This is the exact sum that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Peace Fund needs to generate to be able to implement its peace initiatives for the region.
ECOWAS has already put in place a five year Peace Fund (EPF) strategic plan, covering the period of 2021 to 2025.
Consequently, EPF organised a meeting with partners and other stakeholders in Abuja to fashion a wayforward.
According to the bloc, the practical implementation of the ECOWAS Peace Fund strategic plan would require a significant amount of resources (financial, technical, and human) but will also generate funds that will enable the EPF to be self-funded, not requiring financial resources from the commission for its operation.
Since its operationalisation in 2006, the EPF management team has been engaged in three sets of activities, mobilization of financial resources for the fund, administrative and financial management of the fund and coordination of donor-funded projects in the peace and security sector. Thus, as part of its resource mobilization efforts, the team has actively contributed to the mobilization of cash funding of over $1 million from.four bilateral donors (China, Greece, Italy and Japan) and projects/programmes funding of €68 million from multilateral partners (AfDB, CIDA and European Union.)
The team has between 2006 and 2020 facilitated the funding of 40 peace and security initiatives costing $15.7 million under the 5% member states community levy contribution budget line and supported funding of Peace Support Operations (POS) in 11 member states.
Approximately, $49 million has so far been spent, especially for peace keeping efforts in Guinea Bissau and The Gambian, both totalling $38 million.
The team has coordinated 13 donor-funded projects and programmes, of which two are ongoing.
Speaking at a joint Strategic Consultation on ECOWAS Peace Fund meeting with partners and stakeholders, the Manager, ECOWAS Peace Fund and Capacity Department of Political Affairs, Peace & Security (PAP), Dieudonne Nikiema said ECOWAS Commission is to see the best structure for the fund that would make it fit into the purpose it was created for.
He said: “The purpose of this meeting that is gathering us for three days is to get all the stakeholders so that together they can see what is the best structure we can have for this forum in order for it to be fit for purpose, in order for it to become very strong, enable to mobilize more resources and also to manage resources for the well-being of the ECOWAS communities along all the 15 member countries.
“We have here representatives from ECOWAS Commission, from ECOWAS Specialized Agencies, from development partners, and it is really a good time for us to reflect together and see how we can cross-fertilize our ideas to make it very strong and to respond to the needs of our different communities.”
He added that the current source of funding apart from partners is the 5% community levy which has its challenges.
He equally explained that: “According to the process that has been set in place, the arrangement is that 5% of whatever is collected as community levy is dedicated to the Peace Fund, that’s it.
“So when the community levy is getting more resources, then the Peace Fund is getting more resources.“
ECOWAS Director in Charge of the Private sector, Dr. Tony Elumelu said the private sector would be interested in anything that would help improve the ease of doing business in the country, knowing fully well that businesses thrive in a peaceful environment.
Speaking on private sector participation in EPF, Emelelu said “it is to assist the ECOWAS fund in terms of implementing the ECOWAS program that will move towards peace and security and stability in the region.”
He stressed that “the private sector will always go to where there will be something for them. Whether you like it or not, there’s no free lunch for the private sector. “They always go where there’s peace, an enabling environment for investment to thrive.
“So we’re looking at a way where we can collaborate with the Peace Fund to make sure that the vision in terms of economic development, that will make sure that our youth are fully engaged.”
He further explained that: “For the private sector, understanding the objective of the peace fund is very important. Risks that are involved in terms of the investment is also very important. Managing the fund and participation from the private sector angle is also very important.
“It must be participatory. I’m sure you know that when the private sector is involved, elements that are supposed to be put in place, they go smoothly.
“So from the private sector angle, awareness is the first thing. Objective, the goals, the targets. And the targets will also be focused on creating an enabling environment for business to thrive within the region.
“Investment, whether foreign direct investment or traditional trade, mobility. I’m sure you know it within the context of the continental free movement and trade. It is very important for us to drive this process.
“So that’s exactly what we are doing here. Internal consultation and external consultation in terms of a Peace Fund. How to bring in funds, how to bring trust, because trust is the main thing.
“Prioritizing because the business may want to prioritize. If the Peace Fund will create an enabling environment for its business to thrive, that is what they want. And that’s why we’re coming in as a private sector.”

The Ambrose Alli University Alumni Association Worldwide Ekpoma will hold her annual Delegate Convention from Thursday, 25th to Sunday, 27th October 2024. In a release signed by the Worldwide General Secretary of the association, Sir. Vincent Owhofadjeke and made available to newsmen, five delegates each are expected from every branch of the Association. The delegates are to arrive at Ekpoma on Thursday, 24th October, when the Pre-Convention National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting will hold.
On Friday, 25th October 2024, the Annual General Meeting will hold while on Saturday, 26th October, the Election of Officers into the Worldwide Executive Offices of the Association will hold, and on Sunday 27th October 2024 Delegates will depart.
According to the Worldwide President of the Association, Dr. Clifford Imade Omozeghian, the Annual Delegate Convention is regarded as the great home coming of graduates of the University to their almamater, and it offers them the opportunity to tour round the campus to see the state of facilities and the learning environment. Part of the activities at this Convention is the courtesy call on the Onojie of Ekpoma, HRH Anthony Abumere II, the Chairman of Esan West Local Government Area, Hon. Collins Aigbogun, and the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Asonmwan Sonnie Adagbonyin, which offers the Alumni Association the opportunity to cross fertilize ideas with the leadership of Ekpoma Community and the Management of the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma and intimate them with the Alumni’s plans for the institution.
Some resource persons are expected as key note speakers for the Convention.
This year’s Convention with the theme “Repositioning and Strengthening the Alumni Association: the Vision of a Dedicated Alumnus” he added is unique in the sense that it is the first Convention this Administration is holding after the establishment of a Governing Cuncil for the Institution regarded as one of the foremost state universities in sub-saharan Africa, and interestingly, the Worldwide President Dr. Clifford Imade Omozeghian is a member of the Governing Council.
It would be recalled that when the Clifford Omozeghian’s Administration came into office, the University was administerd by a Special Intervention Team (SIT), but today, the story is different partly due to the engagements of the Alumni Association with the State Government and other Stakeholders.
The President prayed God to grant all delegates journey mercies to and from the Convention.
The Delta State Government notes with serious concern some reports in some online media platforms alleging that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori borrowed the sum of N40billion soon after assuming office.
The reports are not only misleading, but also capable of creating misunderstanding and confusion in the State. For the avoidance of doubt, I wish to state categorically that the Delta State Government DID NOT Borrow N40 billion. And the Sheriff Oborevwori administration has not borrowed any dime till now. The records are there for anybody who cares for the truth to verify.
What the Oborevwori administration did was to graciously guarantee a N40b loan facility for ALGON, to enable it offset the unpaid pension liabilities of retired Local Government personnel. Repayable over a five-year period, the loan is to be repaid through direct debits to the Local Government Councils.
For the umpteen time, let me also state without equivocation that the so-called N465 billion debt amount is actually the existing debt profile accumulated by previous administrations in the State. Governor Oborevwori, as many would testify, is a prudent manager of resources, and has done the right thing by keeping to the terms of repayment as specified in the loan agreements. The Governor deserves commendation, not condemnation, for being a man of honour and integrity.
Debt servicing/repayment improves the credibility of any administration in the global financial community as a serious minded and progressive administration, which will enjoy the respect and support of financial institutions. It is only a well run economy that can embark on debt servicing and still maintain its developmental vision and focus for the welfare and well being of its citizens, as the Oborevwori administration has continued to do.
Meanwhile, I appeal to the media, as strategic partners of development, to always cross check their facts, as the ethics of the profession demands, before rushing to publish. I wish to reiterate that Governor Oborevwori maintains an open door policy, and is committed to transparency and accountability in the administration of the State.
Dr. Ifeanyi M. Osuoza, Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Information, Delta State.
Europe Union (EU) has insisted that democratic governance remains the best way of uplifting Nigeria.
This was the parting words of the outgoing Europe Union Head of Delegations to Nigeria and West Africa, Samuela Isopi who is departing the country after four years stay in the country.
Speaking at a farewell programme organised by the EU Monday night, Isopi also said Nigeria remains Africa’s leader in the area of innovation.
She said the EU was proud to invest significantly in the transformative power of Nigerian self-determination, stating that on a personal note she remains “particularly proud and grateful for our partnership and support to Nigeria’s democracy. This is something which is very dear to my heart.”
She added that: “Democratic governance in Nigeria remains the key inspiration of Nigeria, and remains the best way to uplift a stronger and better Nigeria. A Nigeria that cares for its people and lives up to its aspirations. In everything we have done together, our support has always been genuine and true.”
Isopi, in her assessment of Nigeria, noted that: “On innovation, Nigeria is a leader of the continent and I am very proud that the European Union and its member states have decided to invest significantly in the transformative power of Nigerian self-determination.
“On access to human development, Nigeria is now fully united to solve problems and I am pleased with the critical support that the European Union has provided. The European Union, as I have also mentioned in the past, remains by far Nigeria’s loudest voice and counts for about one third of Nigeria’s foreign trade.
“It is a balance that nobody would believe is in jeopardy. The European Union is also by far Nigeria’s most active and hundreds of European companies are absolutely contributing to its economic growth, diversification of its economy, and most importantly, its jobs. I am proud of the work we have done with Nigeria for and with Nigerian innovators, Nigerian women, Nigerian civil society, and all the Nigerians who work every day to build a better future.”
She stated that Nigeria and Europe has continued to grow closer ties.
Isopi said: “So at the end of this week I will be leaving Nigeria. I will also be leaving Africa after serving in this unique continent for 10 years, 10 incredible years since 2014. As EU ambassador and as ambassador of my own country.
“And now that I am leaving, I am even more convinced that the European Union and Nigeria are so much closer. We are neighbours, we are both global players, we stand for the same values, we have so much to give to each other and so much to gain from working together. And this mutual awareness has been at the very heart, at the core of my initiative in Nigeria.
“I am personally delighted to have found in the Nigerian government, the previous one and the new one, a formidable counterpart, open to engage in all areas of our partnership, from peace and security to governance, human development, and digital aid. I am proud of what we have done together for so many areas that are vital to the betterment of Nigerian society. Agriculture, agricultural activities, sustainability, the value chains that are so important to all of us, support and security.”
She also stated that “Nigeria has everything it wants to take it out of all its challenges. A diversified society, a rich culture, a robust civil society, a vibrant manufacturing sector, a dynamic media landscape.”
She also added, “Talent in brave women, entrepreneurial spirit, and a determination to do better. And doing better will continue to require vision, hard work.”
On her successor, Isopi said “In difficult times, partnership is a matter of now rather than never. And I am sure that the European Union, under the leadership of my successor, will continue to stand by Nigeria and by Nigerians in the journey towards a better future.
“All Nigeria must be proud of us. But I know, as will my successor, that we should not let our achievements overshadow the challenges ahead of us. I leave this country, and I remain convinced that the best is still to come for Nigeria and the Nigerians.”
An advocate for good governance, Sir Godwin Ebelli has congratulated past and present administrators of the state for maintaining and sustaining the unity and peace that was existing among the various ethnic groups before the creation of the state in 1991.
Speaking to journalist via telephone interview, Sir Ebelli said 33 years is quite a good number, saying that “judging from various administrations in Delta, the state has fared well in terms of unity and peaceful co-existence.
He thanked all Deltans for their efforts and good conduct by upholding the dreams and aspirations of the founding fathers.
Sir Ebelli urged the leadership of the state government to embark on projects that have direct impact on the citizens of the state, saying *our cities should be kept clean at all times and encourage food security in all Local government Areas through Agriculture loans*.
According to him, infrastructure is an essential driver of economic growth and prosperity, and the viability of an economy owes greatly to solid network of roads and bridges.
He therefore appealed to the state government to open up the rural areas with roads and bridges for easy haulage of goods and services from point of production to point of need.
He opined that the leadership of the state should support infrastructure initiatives because infrastructure is essential to the growth and development of societies and small businesses.
Sir Ebelli noted that by supporting infrastructure initiatives, individuals and companies are investing in their future and contributing to the growth and development of their communities, thereby creating a better and more prosperous future for all.
He urged Deltans to be united and courageous in telling the authorities to do the right thing, noting that what is needed to put the state on the path of progress is attitudinal change and political culture that would strengthen the policies of the state.
in his words, ” Deltans should be security conscious in the face of current insecurity in the Country.

The Managing Director, of Nigerian Railway Corporation, Engr Freeborn Okhirie has commended the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for standing tall in the protection of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI) including numerous arrests of Suspects with vandalized Railway Slippers and other gadgets.
He however noted that despite these efforts to salvage the NRC from economic saboteurs, the Corporation still suffer losses through vandalism of its installations across the country.
Freeborn stated this while on a courtesy call to the office of the NSCDC Commandant General, Dr. Ahmed Audi in Abuja.
He expressed worries that some Rail tracks were still been vandalize while the number of perpetrators rising despite many arrests of suspects made.
According to him, all hands must be on deck to confront the disturbing ugly trend which he described as an organized conspiracy to commit economic sabotage calling for a stronger synergy amongst critical stakeholders and security agencies to bring perpetrators and sponsors to book.
While assuring the NSCDC of the NRC support and readiness to continue to collaborate with the Corps, he admonished the Public to assist by providing actionable Intelligence that would lead to arrests of suspects so the Infrastructure provided by the government to meet the public needs would be secured.
He pledged to leverage the prosecutorial mandate of the Corps by liaising for appropriate investigation and trial of suspects who are being apprehended.
In his response, the CG NSCDC Dr Ahmed Audi disclosed that over 20 trailers with numerous suspects have been arrested in connection with the crime of vandalism of Railway slippers.
Audi expressed his commitment to work harder in containing the incidence decrying the slow pace encountered in the course of prosecution of suspects.
The CG explained that the Corps would strengthen its disciplinary mechanism and sanction any personnel found culpable in sabotaging the concerted effort and thus solicited the Corporation’s assistance in catering for the welfare of the personnel deployed to their respective duty for the protection of the Infrastructure.
The Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Health, Dr. Salma Ibrahim Annas has revealed that only Borno State has implemented the 30% bonus allowance for health personnel working in rural areas.
The bonus, which is 30% of the total monthly pay, is paid to all rural health workers in Borno, and it aims to improve their welfare and motivate them to provide quality health care services to the people.
Speaking during a visit to Maiduguri on Thursday, she said: “We are here, sir, to first appreciate all the work you have been doing in the health sector. In fact, you have recorded remarkable things to successes within the health sector in a very short time.
“I am very happy that you are very committed to health; in the areas of human resources, you have even gone ahead to put in place sustainable measures, an increment of 30% to health workers in rural areas. This is a great incentive. I think this is only done in South Africa; that is why they saw progress in the health of their communities.
“Financing health, of course, your Excellency, we have given you more than 100% appreciation because we are supposed to reach 15% by the World Health Organization. Apart from Borno, not more than one or two states have even taken it to 10%.”
“In the area of primary health care and human resources, you have already achieved a lot. You are establishing a medical school and new colleges of nursing and midwifery studies. All these will contribute to the development of the health sector.
Responding, Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum reiterated his administration’s commitment to continuous financing and upgrading of the healthcare sector.
The meeting was attended by the Secretary to Borno State Government, Hon Bukar Tijani, the Commissioner for Health, Professor Baba Mallam Gana and the Executive Director of Borno State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Professor Mohammed Arab Alhaji.
The United States has said the idea of establishing a military base in Nigeria was never on the table.
Speaking to journalists on what is next line of action for US government after scrapping it military base in Niger as an aftermath of Nigerien government calling for it as a fallout of worldwide criticism of military take over of democratically elected government in the West African country, the Department of Defense West Africa Coordination Element Lead, U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM).Maj. Gen. Kenneth Ekman said though it was natural for anyone to suspect that Nigeria would have been the natural destination to establish American military base due to it closeness to Niger and its strategic position as well as cordial relationship with Nigeria but there was never any such plan at any time.
He said: “I am aware of no discussions between U.S. and Nigerian authorities on placing a U.S. base in Nigeria as a result of the Niger withdrawal.
“So if strategy is war on a map, and if the problem we’re trying to solve is Sahelian-based violent extremism, and if the U.S. is not functioning in Niger, then where should we be? That’s what led us to an outside-in approach relative to the Sahel. Does that make sense? So outside-in. And then anytime you talk about outside-in, the important question is, what is Nigeria’s role, given the strength of the nation, given the closeness of our partnership? So it’s a very natural question.
“And I’m not surprised that some people assumed that there were discussions going on about this.”
He revealed the US has no plan to build any big military base anywhere else in West Africa, adding that “if Niger allowed the U.S. to work with partners to go inside-out, for lack of access to Niger, we are now focused on an outside-in approach. And so countries where we’re having conversations, countries where we have started putting some forces, include Cote d’Ivoire, include Benin, we have some U.S. forces there now. I’m going to Accra next.
“I’m keenly interested in what their authorities have to say. It’s got to be right for the partner. And then I was just in N’Djamena a couple of weeks ago as we talked about the next phase for the posture of U.S. forces.
“In all cases, we’re starting with just small elements, small special operations teams that provide advice and assistance and training to the host nation forces. And so that’s the steps for what next. I think that big bases is just not right for the environment.”
On the withdrawal of the military presence from Niger, Ekman said: “We’re almost done. We’ve achieved, together with our Nigerien partners, the safe, orderly, and responsible withdrawal of U.S. forces. A couple of key milestones within that.
“On the 5th of August, we watched the last C-17 fly out of Air Base 201, which is in Agadez, and that was the last major movement of U.S. forces and material. And then just two days ago, we signed over the last U.S. posture location, and as I speak to you today, all former U.S. areas, facilities, and material that remain in Niger have been turned over to the Nigerien military and to the Nigerien authorities. So we’re almost done.”
Ekman, while noting that the deadline of September 15 withdrawal from Niger would be met, highlighted how the withdrawal was conducted: “First, all sensitive equipment, all lethal equipment came out. And then we had to look as we went through the equipment, where did it cost more to move it than it cost in terms of remaining value to divest it? And so I’ve walked these places.
“I’ve seen exactly what we’ve turned over to our Nigerien partners. And it mostly amounts to spaces, it amounts to buildings, and it amounts to non-tactical vehicles. Those are the kinds of things that we turned over.
“And then they are a resource for them. And so as an example, Air Base 201 in Agadez, it was almost a small city, right? So we made sure that they understood how to run the electricity, how to run the water treatment plant. They received some physical infrastructure that our goal would be it continues to operate, right? So that’s how we proceeded.”
Comptroller General of Immigration (CGI), Kemi Nandap has dismantled all unauthorized checkpoints along Nigeria’s border posts.
Nandap, however ordered routine patrols to completely forestall dangerous and unauthorized elements from entering into the country.
She equally ordered the immediate submission of audit reports on manpower and logistics.
A statement on Friday by the spokesman of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Kenneth Udo said the CGI gave the order at a meeting with Comptrollers of Border Commands and Commanders at the Service Headquarters in Abuja.
According to him, the decision is aimed at ensuring efficient border security and migration management which are core mandates of the Immigration Service.
The CGI charged them to be dedicated to duty and underscored the significance of border security stating that, Nigeria’s current realities require extra layers of security at the borders to prevent infiltration by criminal elements that could fuel crises in the country.
Nandap instructed that henceforth, Comptrollers are to employ supervisory strategies, ensure timely report of major movements (entries and exits) and, professionally, handle sensitive intelligence requiring urgent attention with recommendations for enhanced border monitoring.
The statement added that: “These reports are to be submitted weekly through approved administrative channels.”
According to the statement, the CGI directed the “immediate submission of both Manpower and Logistics audit; and tasked Commanders on the need for a robust Inter-Agency collaboration for effective intelligence sharing.
The statement further read that: “Furthermore, she ordered the removal of unauthorised checkpoints and conduct routine patrols to completely forestall dangerous and unauthorized elements from entering the country.”
“The meeting provided the Service with ample opportunity to assess situations at the borders to gain useful insights that will guide policy and operational strategies towards enhanced National Security.
“The Comptroller General reiterated the Services commitment to the deployment of e-solutions, training and the welfare of officers in the field.”
Former Delta State Commissioner for Information, Chike Ogeah, Esq has described Professor Epiphany Chigbogu Azinge, the new Asagba-designate, as a leader made to be king.
He noted that the former Director General of the Nigerian Institute for Advanced Legal Studies, is a man of candour, intellect and of urbane spirit, yet grounded in deep traditionalism unlike any other Asaba man of his generation.
Ogeah who is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of MacFolly Hospitality Ltd (owners of the Lagos Marriott Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos) said he is totally ‘Asaba-centric’ and has always fiercely placed Asaba first in all his past endeavours.
‘As an ‘Olinzele’, a Chief in the Court of the Asagba, he is the “Okilolo” of Asaba which makes him the ‘intellectual storehouse’ of the Palace. Asaba is indeed lucky to have such an intellectual giant succeed the very massive shoes of the departed equally intellectual giant in the immediate past royal father”, Ogbueshi Ogeah stated.
Recalling his younger days as a student of St. Patrick’s College, Asaba, Ogeah said Prof. Azinge who is also an old boy of the college was like a big brother to him, an extension of the relationship between their families, especially their mother’s who were “great friends”.
With the peaceful emergence of the Asagba-designate where all the five ‘ebos’ (villages) voted overwhelmingly for him, the former commissioner said it shows how acceptable he is to the entire Asaba Kingdom.
Ogeah expressed optimism that Asaba and the monarchy are primed for an even greater future under the Asagba-designate. “Asaba can only consolidate on its position as ‘primus inter pares’ in the comity of traditional rulers in Nigeria”.
Prof. Azinge emerged the 14th Asagba on Sunday, August 11, 2024 following the announcement of the kingmakers after Prof. Chike Edozien, the 13th Asagba, joined his ancestors on February 7, 2024.
Prof. Azinge also previously served as a Judge at the Commonwealth Arbitral Tribunal in London, where he was president while representing Nigeria and Africa. The Asagba-designate who has had years of teaching experience was a Senior Lecturer at the University of Benin Law Faculty and University of Abuja before he proceeded to the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies as its fifth director general. He was the President-General of Asaba Development Union (ADU) Worldwide, the umbrella body of all true sons and daughters of Asaba ancestry.
The National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu has called for collaboration with the Nigerian government in its battle at ending insecurity in the country, insisting that the fight against terrorism is not one that any nation can undertake alone, but rather requires concerted global effort.
Speaking at the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism and Memorial for Victims of August 26, 2011 Terror Attack at United Nations House in Abuja, Nigeria, the NSA who was represented by the National Coordinator of the National Counter-Terrorism Centre. Maj. Gen. Adamu Garba Laka decried that terrorism has left a profound and painful mark on Nigeria, Africa, and many other parts of the world.
He said: “For us in Nigeria, we have experienced the devastation of countless terror attacks that have claimed lives, destroyed properties, torn families apart, and displaced millions from their homes. The scars of terrorism are deeply etched from the Northeast to the heart of our capital, Abuja. We remember, in particular, the horrific bombing of the United Nations House on 26 August 2011, a senseless act of violence that claimed the lives of 23 individuals and injured over 60 others.
“These were people who had dedicated their lives to peace, development, and the betterment of humanity, yet they became victims of the very menace they sought to combat. I therefore wish to commemorate these heroes and their families on this sad event.
“In this solemn moment, we remember the countless victims of terrorism, violence and conflict around the world. I also wish to pay tribute to the brave men and women in uniform who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Many have laid down their lives so that we may continue to live in peace. Let us also remember the victims who have been injured or traumatized in the line of duty. Their dedication and commitment to preserving our freedom and securing our Nation is nothing short of heroic.”
He added that: “In the face of this adversity, the strength and resilience of those affected by terrorism stand as a testament to the human spirit. Despite the loss and trauma, survivors continue to show remarkable courage. As we mark the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism, it is our collective responsibility to support and uplift them. We therefore must ensure that their voices are heard, their needs are met, and their rights are safeguarded. I am pleased to state that this commitment is at the core of the Office of the National Security Adviser’s mission, which drives our dedication to serve.”
Ribadu said: “I must at this point, commend the efforts of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, and all our partners for their steadfast support. Your partnership has been invaluable, especially in our ongoing efforts to address the needs of terrorism victims and strengthen our counter-terrorism measures. This collaborative spirit reinforces the belief that the fight against terrorism is not one that any nation can undertake alone, it requires concerted global effort.”
He revealed that: “Just yesterday at the National Counter Terrorism Centre, we had the privilege of engaging in a consultative meeting with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, and other partners, for the implementation of the Model Legislative Provisions. The project titled “Technical Assistance and Cooperation with the Federal Government of Nigeria on the Promotion and Support of the Rights and Needs of Victims of Terrorism” aims to achieve its objectives by enhancing our national and sub-national capacities to develop comprehensive assistance plans. I must say that, this aligns perfectly with the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act of 2022 and the Policy Framework and National Action Plan for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism. Through the Model Legislative Provisions Project, we hope to build a robust system that will address the immediate needs of victims and contribute to their long-term recovery, resilience, and empowerment. The project will be a giant stride towards ensuring that victims of terrorism receive the support they deserve.”
Meanwhile, the United Nations Secretary General, António Guterres has said: “Acts of terrorism create a wave of unimaginable grief. Families and communities torn apart by terrorist acts are forever changed. The scars – both visible and invisible – never fully heal.”
He added that: “Through the torment and tragedy, we have also witnessed remarkable examples of resilience and the enduring power of our common humanity.”
The Secretary General’s speech on International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism, which was delivered by UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr. Mohamed Malick Fall, noted that: “Reflecting on personal trauma to educate others is an act of immense courage. This day urges us to listen and to learn. And it is a reminder that we must always seek out the light of hope. Together, we can raise up the voices of all victims and survivors. Together, we can help educate present and future generations. Together, we can build more peaceful, resilient societies for all.”
Mall recalled: “Here in Nigeria, 26th August 2011 started like a normal working day at UN House. Our colleagues were going about their normal work, serving this country in various capacities. There were teams of staff and partners from WHO that were making plans to serve this country. Others were our government counterparts who came to discuss with us how we can serve Nigeria better. Just like we have worked over the years.
“In an instant, all that changes. After the blast, 23 of our colleagues and some partners were dead. About 60 other sustained injuries and some are living with those scars until today. Others of our colleagues are living with emotional scars whenever they remember the colleagues they worked with closely – that are now gone. Gone prematurely. We pay tribute to all of the departed colleagues and say that they will never be forgotten.”
The Executive Secretary, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Dr. Tony Ojukwu on his part, said: “Most victims of terrorism are innocent citizens who find themselves at the wrong place and at the wrong time, randomly targeted in brutal attacks. The lives of survivors, and those of their families, can be irrevocably changed. Many victims take years to recover physically from their injuries or come to terms with their losses. Without help, the trauma can be a lifelong sentence.”

He however said the fees remain unchanged in Diaspora.
Udo said: “While the Nigeria Immigration Service regrets any inconvenience this increase might cause prospective applicants; it assures Nigerians of unwavering commitment to transparency and quality service delivery at all times.”

Nigeria’s salary structure has long been a subject of debate, with vast disparities between what different categories of workers, politicians, and professionals earn. The inequality in remuneration has far-reaching implications for the country, contributing to societal unrest, corruption, and a sense of injustice among the populace.
This article examines the current salary structures in Nigeria, highlights the detrimental effects of these disparities on society, and argues for a unified salary structure across all sectors.
Furthermore, it draws on examples from other countries that have adopted a more egalitarian approach to remuneration, offering lessons for Nigeria.
Analysis of Nigeria’s Salary Structures
Nigeria operates a tiered salary structure, where different categories of workers, including politicians, professionals, judicial officers, military, and paramilitary personnel, are paid vastly different amounts. Politicians, particularly members of the National Assembly, are among the highest-paid in the country.
According to reports, a Nigerian senator earns over ₦13 million monthly in salaries and allowances, while the basic salary of a civil servant on Grade Level 8 is approximately ₦70,000 per month under the new minimum wage. This disparity is even more glaring when compared to the salaries of healthcare workers, teachers, and security personnel, who often earn meager amounts despite their critical roles in society.
The judiciary, military, and paramilitary forces also operate under different pay scales, with judges and high-ranking officers receiving significantly more than lower-ranking personnel. These disparities are not only unfair but also undermine the morale of workers, leading to inefficiency and corruption in the public service.
The Damaging Effects of Disparate Salary Structures on Society
The current salary structure in Nigeria has several damaging effects on society:
Corruption and Inefficiency: The wide gap in salaries has fueled corruption, particularly among public servants and low-ranking officials who see bribes and kickbacks as necessary supplements to their inadequate incomes. This has led to inefficiency in the public service, as employees prioritize personal gain over public service.
Social Inequality: The disparity in earnings exacerbates social inequality, leading to a growing divide between the rich and the poor. This inequality breeds resentment and discontent among the populace, contributing to social unrest and a breakdown in trust between the government and the people.
Brain Drain: Highly skilled professionals, such as doctors, engineers, and academics, often seek opportunities abroad where they are better compensated. This brain drain deprives Nigeria of the talent needed for national development and hinders economic growth.
Moral Decay: The perception that political office is a quick route to wealth has led to a decline in the moral fabric of society, with many young people aspiring to political office not to serve but to enrich themselves.
Rationale for a Unified Salary Structure
Given the damaging effects of the current salary disparities, there is a strong case for unifying Nigeria’s salary structures. Placing all categories of workers, politicians, professionals, judicial officers, military, and paramilitary personnel on the same salary structure would promote equity and fairness, fostering a more cohesive and just society. Here are some reasons why this approach is justified:
Promotes Equality: A unified salary structure ensures that all workers are valued equally, regardless of their profession or position. This would reduce social inequality and promote a more balanced distribution of wealth.
Reduces Corruption: When all workers receive fair and adequate compensation, the incentive to engage in corrupt practices diminishes. This would lead to greater efficiency and transparency in public service.
Improves Morale and Productivity: A fair salary structure boosts the morale of workers, leading to increased productivity and a stronger commitment to public service. This would have positive ripple effects on national development.
Attracts and Retains Talent: A unified salary structure that offers competitive wages would attract and retain skilled professionals, reducing the brain drain and ensuring that Nigeria has the human resources needed for development.
Examples from Other Countries
Several countries have implemented more egalitarian salary structures, with positive results:
Norway: Norway operates a relatively flat salary structure, where the difference between the highest and lowest-paid employees is minimal. This has contributed to the country’s high levels of social equality, low corruption rates, and strong public trust in government institutions.
New Zealand: New Zealand has also adopted a more egalitarian approach to salaries, particularly within the public sector. The country’s emphasis on fair pay has resulted in a highly efficient public service, low levels of corruption, and a strong commitment to public welfare.
Singapore: While not entirely uniform, Singapore’s salary structure for public servants is designed to be competitive with the private sector, reducing the temptation for corruption and ensuring that public service is seen as an attractive career choice. This has contributed to the country’s reputation for efficiency and low corruption.
Conclusion
The disparities in Nigeria’s salary structures are not only unfair but also harmful to the country’s social fabric and development prospects. By adopting a unified salary structure, Nigeria can promote equality, reduce corruption, and improve the morale and productivity of its workforce.
Learning from countries like Norway, New Zealand, and Singapore, Nigeria can create a more just and prosperous society where all citizens have the opportunity to thrive. The time for reform is now, and the benefits of a fair and equitable salary structure cannot be overstated.
By Dr James-Wisdom Abhulimen is Chairman, Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Edo State Chapter.
The M.O.R.E. Reality Group (MRG), devoted to supporting the well thought out and well intentioned M.O.R.E Agenda, acronym for: Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms and Enhanced Peace and Security, of the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori for the people, has watched with keen interest the series of buffeting releases in recent times by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta, through some of its delusional surrogates like Ogaga Ovasa, aimed at undermining the efforts and good work that the Governor is doing.
MRG is sickened by the disingenuous disposition of these cretins to obfuscate issues and try to pander to emotions, through dishing out propaganda in the name of Press Releases just to confuse and possibly get unwary Deltans and the general public, who are daily assaulted by the very bad economic policies of the APC-led Federal Government to swallow its deceptive narrative.
Of course, MRG is not in any way amazed by the persistent eccentricity of the authors of the puerile taunts and comic roles; these have always been their stock in trade as they have positioned themselves as sworn enemies of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori and his administration.
Rather than bury their heads in shame and mull over the hunger, pain and all the suffering and trauma that the maladministration that the APC Federal Government has plunged Nigerians into, these extremists and fundamentalists have continued to issue press releases, numbering about four in one week, thus exposing how detached they are from the pathetic condition that the deliberately suffocating policy of the present Federal Government has put Nigerians and businesses into at this time.
Among the many claims of the clueless propagandists thrown against the administration of the M.O.R.E Apostle, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori are words like: “misgovernance”, “economic mismanagement”, “financial recklessness,” which they have quite callously dumped on the door step of President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration to “crippling debts that successive PDP administrations have driven Delta State into,” which they draped the PDP with, up until the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori just over one year tenure.
As observers of these diatribes, MRG seeks first of all, to set the records straight about the worthless brouhaha, which has been made over the debt servicing/repayment initiative of the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration.
First, renowned economists all over the world, will confirm that debt repayment or servicing is one of the most strategic policies to reduce Interest Costs by freeing up funds that can be allocated to other areas such as infrastructure, healthcare, education, or social welfare programs, just as the administration of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori is doing presently.
Second, Debt repayment also improves the credibility of any administration in the global financial community as a serious minded and progressive administration, which will enjoy the respect and attention of financial institutions, since its only a well run economy that can embark on debt servicing and still maintain its developmental vision and focus for the welfare and well being of its citizens, as well as encourage and attract investors to the State.
Again, debt repayment/servicing not only stabilizes the economy by reducing the risk of a debt crisis that could negatively impact the implementation of the plans of the administration, prioritizing debt repayment, as against the penchant of borrowing, demonstrates fiscal responsibility and discipline and it is on record that the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration has not borrowed money since it assumed office on May 29, 2023.
Finally, it is also important to educate the illiterate APC spokesperson and other armchair critics, that debt repayment has created a systemic fiscal leverage, which the administration has been utilizing for investments in public infrastructure like the completion of ongoing projects, the robust infrastructural development going on across the three Senatorial zones in the state and the amazing construction work by the renowned Julius Berger firm of the three flyovers in the Warri axis, already progressing with impressive speed.
It has also given the Oborevwori administration the latitude to embark on and support critical and selected social programmes like the M.O.R.E Grants Scheme, the D-Cares and other empowerment programmes and emergency events and schemes which have already impacted positively on hundreds of thousands of Deltans and will continue to position Delta State in the top tier of the most favoured and attractive states in the country.
All these point to the incontrovertible fact that the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori administration, in maintaining the debt repayment/servicing obligation, has exhibited commendable and prudent financial management of its funds, by not only ensuring fiscal fluidity and stability, but most importantly, doing so by sustaining an impressive balance with other economic considerations, such as promoting growth, maintaining public services, and addressing social needs.
It is based on the above economic paradigms and truism that MRG sees the misapplied use of the word ‘misgovernance’ as laughable, especially coming at this disquieting times when there’s a groundswell of national outrage from Nigerian youths and adults; men and women, with a call to #EndBadGovernance, unleashed by the President Bola Tinubu-led APC Federal Government, on Nigerians.
The protest exposed the APC-led Federal Government’s underbelly as a government that lacks initiative on how to resolve the challenges bedeviling the nation; challenges that were deliberately imposed on Nigerians by one statement, uttered in one bellicose moment of pseudo-rational, unscripted, egomaniacal narcissism; challenges that have debased the person of every Nigerian and made life difficult for the people.
Ogaga Ovasa did not see anything abnormal with the APC being in power for over nine locust years, which has clandestinely transformed Nigeria into a country overrun by waves of insecurity that have left farmers languishing in IDP camps and driven away from their ancestral homes.
It means nothing to the yeye propagandist that its Federal Government that announced the removal of fuel subsidy, is bereft of the know-how about what to do to cushion the effect of the subsidy removal; the same person who sponsored and led the #OccupyNigeria protests in its vainglorious effort to cripple the President Goodluck Jonathan administration, over the same fuel subsidy removal, which they have come full circle to implement.
Today, the chickens have come home to roost Nigerians are miffed that the Federal Government had to unconscionably float the Naira in an economy that is neither productive no innovative but has continued to stumble from one experimentally damaging policy to another, thus leaving millions of our people in pain and hunger.
Indeed, Nigerians know that the APC, after its disastrous nine years of “Saint” Buhari is no longer a Party to be taken seriously not only because it lacks the moral impetus to accuse the Delta State PDP Government of misgovernance, but most unfortunately for the sheer shameless impunity and misleading audacity with which Ogaga Ovasa attempted to bypass the retrogressive years of the Buhari administration and vilify the Goodluck Jonathan administration, for Nigeria’s woes.
For Nigerians, APC, a party whose Federal Government is now dispensing wickedness and maladministration is the one that its clueless propagandists are engaged in tell tales of “misgovernance” against a well focused PDP administration in Delta that has brought measured peace and tranquility to the State.
The Delta PDP Publicity Secretary, Engr. Dan Ossai in his very cerebral, articulate and well researched response to an earlier verbiage by this same APC extremist, detailed quite robustly, how the Buhari administration ruined Nigeria, as presented by its own officials first Zainab Ahmed, the former Minister of Finance under Buhari, who openly admitted in 2021 that, revenues were low and so were federal allocations to the States and Local Governments.
She said: “The crash of the crude oil prices really hit us very hard in terms of revenue. We have very low revenues, we have very high expenditures. What we have done so far is just to provide some stability to make sure salaries are paid, pensions are received every month; that we send funds to the judiciary and the legislature; that we meet our debt service obligations. That’s what we are doing. It also means we have had to borrow more than we have planned.
“It is a very difficult time. I cannot explain to you how difficult it is, not just for the Federal Government but also for the States. We see increasing reductions in our FAAC revenues. So, FAAC reduces and whenever FAAC reduces, it is a very difficult situation.”
Indeed, not only did the federal government try to sustain the economy purely on loans and more loans which were not applied to productive sectors nor effectively and equitably to infrastructural development, it also resorted to printing money which is the worst style of economic management.
The current Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, during a Senate Committee hearing in March 2024, regaled Nigerians with the sordid picture of how the APC mismanaged the national economy, from 2015 to 2023.
Listen to Wale Edun: “It came from eight years of just printing money not matched by productivity. It’s not like when you earn dollars, and you free the naira alongside it. We are going to audit even the N22.7 trillion printed aimlessly. The consequence of the eight years of printing money without productivity is high inflation confronting the country now,” he said..
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has decided with great political determination and authority not to borrow, but is also at the same time, paying up and reducing the financial obligations of Delta State in order to safeguard the State from the kind of debt service burden that has crippled the nation under the leadership of the APC. Governor Oborevwori has saved over N205 billion through financial efficiency and gone on to reduce the State debt profile by N180 billion.
Such commitment is not only noble, but can only be executed through a deep sense of leadership responsibility and financial prudence as Oborevwori is demonstrating and it is these achievements in the financial management of the State that the APC is quarreling with.
Even God knows that the APC-led Federal Government is wicked. The clue that APC Federal Government is run by heartless persons can be found in the Book of Proverbs 29: 2, where God said: “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when a wicked man rules, the people groan.”
Since APC stole and has continued to steal Nigeria’s Presidency through a well orchestrated abracadabra and the subsequent magical realism of electoral and judicial conjurations, Nigerians have been groaning.
Sadly, the administration of Muhammadu Buhari, as terrible as it was, never never received any criticism from the then National Leader of the party, now President Bola Tinubu. Never did he ever rein in the Buhari administration with a view to calling it to order against malevolent policies of the administration. Instead, Tinubu, during his presidential campaigns, promised to continue from where Buhari’s administration stopped.
Today, Nigerians have now seen how President Bola Tinubu has fulfilled that campaign promise and are feeling it first hand in their homes, in their pockets, and their lives. Nigerians are now wiser, seeing the Tinubu administration dispensing policies without human face, leaving the millions of our teeming masses to groan in hunger and abject poverty.
One had expected the APC propagandists to at least show remorse to Nigerians; but no, they will not. They prefer, out of sheer cluelessness, obdurate arrogance, diversionary misinformation and a provocative attempt with puerile insults, to try to distract Nigerians and Deltans with talks about “misgovernance” when their Party is the very epitome of “misgovernance”, to use their word.
It is the height of mischief for the APC propagandists to speak of “misgovernance” by the PDP in Delta State, when a critical appraisal of the archive will reveal a stretch, replete with records of the good and beneficial deeds of the successive PDP administrations in the State.
The Chief James Onanefe Ibori administration transformed the State from its fledgling underdeveloped status akin to that of a glorified Local Government, into a State worthy of the name and description, empowering the workforce and opening up the three Senatorial districts with roads and other sectoral infrastructure. Higher institutions were established to ease admission bottlenecks of Delta youths eager for tertiary education, and Delta bubbled as the big heart of the country.
Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan came and upped the ante of development with his administration’s three-point agenda which successfully addressed the issues of peace and security; human capital development and infrastructure improvement and became the rallying point for socio-economic development which impacted positively on lives of Deltans. He then initiated the futuristic template of Delta Beyond Oil; an initiative which had the vision to deploy and appropriate earnings from oil to develop the infrastructure and other non-oil sectors in the economy which will inturn, provide multiple strings of income for the State and for the people.
Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa built on transforming the State further with the Five-Point Agenda and Delta, as well as Nigeria, was well on the path of building on the already developmental platforms laid down by the PDP government and achieving tremendous national growth and global recognition, and then Buhari and the APC happened to us like the 10 plagues in biblical Egypt and Nigerians were plunged into increasing hardship and suffering, as we groped from one disaster of misgovernance to another until we got to where we are today.
The concern and expectation of Deltans and Nigerians is that they want to be eased from the harrowing economic hardship foisted on them by the bad policies of the APC-led Federal Government, in the last Nine years which have come increasingly draconian with Nigerians starring at a bleak future in the months and years ahead.
This is the main issue that has brought Deltans and people of Nigeria into cries and lamentations against the Emilokan administration of the APC-Federal Government, so much so that many Nigerians go hungry without meals for days, while transportation costs are unaffordable because of the high cost of fuel imposed on the nation through a not well thought out policy of subsidy removal. All these culminated in the recent #Endbadgovernance protests which was a very loud cry of despair, anguish and frustration from Nigerians.
Propagandists like Ovasa Ogaga and his ilk should not carry their deception too far by trying to distract Nigerians from the misrule and shame of the APC-Federal Government. They should rather show patriotism and solidarity with Nigerians by bringing pressure on the administration of the former APC National Leader, now President Bola Tinubu to end the cruel administration’s strangulating economic policies that has reduced Nigerians to a shadow of themselves.
As for what Delta State is doing to justify its allocation, we’re glad to note that at least the likes of Ogaga Ovasa have admitted that Okpanam/Ibusa bypass and of course the Emevor/Orogun road and of course the Ultramodern state-of-the-art Federal High Court Complex have all been commissioned.
And to educate them further, only recently the Delta State Exco in pursuit of ensuring meaningful infrastructural development across Delta State, as enunciated in the MORE Agenda, approved the construction, reconstruction and rehabilitation of a number of roads across the state ensuring that the new projects are distributed in such a way that all parts of the state – all Senatorial Districts and virtually 23 of the 25 Local Government Areas got at least one project.
The list of the projects speaks volumes of Sheriff’s commitment to fairness, equity and even distribution of projects.

In the same vein the Exco presided over by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori approved N3.55bn as counterpart funding for the 2024 Universal Basic Education Programme which is sure to benefit so many communities in all the Local Government Areas and Senatorial Districts.
Deltans are indeed lucky that, against this backdrop of APC national misgovernance over the years, we now have the baton holder of the administration today in His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Governor of Delta State, who is doing marvelously well with his M.O.R.E. Agenda and for which Deltans and residents are pleased.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has demonstrated a stoic determination to manage Delta into a debt-free State and the relative increase in oil production output, spearheaded by the Enhanced Peace and Security component of the MORE Agenda has established sustainable peace and ensured efficient management of relations with oil producing communities.
Deltans know that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is working very hard, especially in this early stage of his administration, and they are seeing the good governance in valuable measure.
Governor Sheriff will definitely do M.O.R.E for Deltans as the tenure unfolds.
Elder Godslove Preye, National Chairman, M.O.R.E. Reality Group, Wrote in from Ojobo, Delta State.
Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum has stated that the Maiduguri dry inland port will begin operations in six months.
Zulum made this known on Wednesday in Lagos while addressing journalists after a courtesy call to the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Pius Akutah.
The Governor expressed confidence that the establishment of the NSC, while providing job opportunities to young people, would also boost the state’s economy.
He said: “Establishing the inland dry port in Maiduguri will bring many opportunities to the government and people of Borno state. It will generate employment, taking thousands of young children off the street. This is very important.
Zulum added that: “Borno State shares border with three countries, namely Niger, Chad and Cameroon. The inland dry port will enhance trans-border trade. This is what we are looking for. The relationship between our border countries will improve, the economy of the nation will grow very well, and our GDP will increase.
He also said: “We are trying to divert our attention from mono-economy, which is oil, by investing in other opportunities. I think Nigeria will be great soon.”
The Governor stated that: “The Federal Government is working to ensure rail lines are rehabilitated under President Bola Tinubu’s initiatives. They are in the process of rehabilitating all the roads, and thousands of trucks are entering Maiduguri daily.”
He however noted that: “Establishing a good road system will fast track the process. Even in the absence of rail, the efficiency and effectiveness of the road transportation system are okay for now for the inland dry port. “We expect the project to be ready in six months.”
On his part, the Executive Secretary of NSC, Pius Akutah, noted that if established, the Maiduguri Dry Inland Port would boost transborder trade, considering that Borno is neighbouring three countries of Cameroon, Char and Niger Republics.
The NSC CEO said: “Like the Governor has said, it is important for Borno State as a border town to these three countries, to have an Inland Dry Port. The benefits that will accompany such cannot be overemphasised.
“With the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) in place, you cannot overemphasize the need to have this kind of critical infrastructure in a place like Maiduguri, Borno State that has boundary with three countries within the area.
“I have been to Borno and I have seen the consistency of his Excellency in terms of his words and his passion for development of Borno State.
“When he said six months, I believe him and I know the work will be done. For instance, the transit park area the Excellency has developed has one of the critical infrastructure to even service the proposed IDP.
“Now, what needs to be done is for those involved to look at the political will of His Excellency to see how they can quickly agree among themselves for the project to become a reality
“This is business and the initiative is not for government to drive the day to day running of the inland dry port. It is a public private dimension and therefore, private sector driven. So the two entities involved should come together and fast track the process of harmosing and agreeing among themselves.”
The Government of Finland on Tuesday said the judicial process has to be exhausted for Simon Ekpa, one of the leaders of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to be extradited from the Nordic country.
Simon Ekpa has in various videos and online post instigated violence against Nigerian government and called for secession of Biafra from Nigeria.
The Nigerian government has consistently demanded for his extradition from Finland where he is presently residing to face charges in Nigeria.
Addressing a press conference in Abuja during the visit of five Nordic countries ministers of foreign affairs, Finland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Elina Valtonen gave an assurance that the judicial issue regarding Simon Ekpa will be closed very soon.
She noted that Ekpa’s case is not considered political but judicial and Finland being a democracy that respect rules of law would want to wait until the case against the Biafran leader is judged at the court before action is taken on him.
She said “the case against the person in question is a judicial issue which must run through its course.”
She however said the judicial hurdle must first be removed.
She said: “If you mean a specific person who is operating in Finland in a not very, say, constructive manner, then indeed we have taken this up and discussed this with the Nigerian authorities in full collaboration.
“And the entire process is within our judicial system, and in Finland, who operates very strictly by the rule of law, such as we see that Nigeria is doing as well.
“It is not a political question, but it is a question to the judicial system, and both our judicial systems do collaborate on this matter, and we hope that we will be able to close it soon.
The other Nordic ministers at the meeting are Mr Tobias Billström, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sweden, Ms Thórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörd Gylfadóttir, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Iceland, Ms Bjørg Sandkjær, State Secretary for International Development, Norway and Ms Eva Marie Frida Barløse, Under Secretary for Foreign Policy, Denmark.
All the Ministers said they are in Nigeria to increase trading with their countries and see Nigeria as an important partner.
Nordic countries have agreed to support Nigeria’s demand for the reform of the United Nations.
The Nordic countries: Finland, Norway, Denmark, Iceland and Sweden gave the promise on Tuesday in Abuja during the visit of their foreign affairs ministers to Nigeria.
The countries said it was important to address Africa’s under-representation in the UN Security Council.
The foreign affairs ministers from the five countries are in Nigeria on a joint visit, the first of its kind outside of Europe.
The visiting Nordic delegation consists of Mr Tobias Billström, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sweden, Ms Elina Valtonen, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Finland, Ms Thórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörd Gylfadóttir, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Iceland, Ms Bjørg Sandkjær, State Secretary for International Development, Norway and Ms Eva Marie Frida Barløse, Under Secretary for Foreign Policy, Denmark
Speaking during a visit to Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar at Tafawa Balewa House, Abuja, Mr Tobias Billström, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sweden described Nigeria as a prominent actor both in Africa and globally.
Billström, while commending Nigeria’s efforts towards promoting peace and forging international cooperation, said: “Our engagement in Africa has been guided by solidarity and long-term equal opportunities. The diplomatic ties between Nigeria and the Nordic countries date back more than 60 years, half a century. And Nigeria is also one of our largest trading partners on the African continent.
“And the recurring business forum Nordic-Nigeria Connect, hosted in Lagos last year is an important venue for further boosting trade and investments between our countries. The role and importance of African countries in international politics is greater than ever.
“Nigeria is a prominent actor on the regional and global stage, and plays an important role in maintaining peace and furthering international cooperation.
“We highly appreciate the Nigerian President’s efforts to promote stability and democracy within ECOWAS, and supporting ongoing efforts to further enhance cooperation between the United Nations and regional organizations.
“The adoption of Security Council Resolution 2719 is a welcome step in this direction. At the same time, it is important to recognize and address Africa’s under-representation in the Security Council.
“And to this end, the Nordic supports the extension and expansion of the Council in both the permanent and two-year term elected categories. Just like Nigeria, the five Nordic countries are firmly committed to standing up for the international rules-based order, democracy, and human rights.
“These values are now under attack, notably through Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine which threatens not only peace and security, but the very principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty.
“And we acknowledge and welcome Nigeria’s clear stance in the UN General Assembly on this matter, in defence of international law and the UN Charter, as well as leading the way for many other countries.
“Excellency, this visit is of particular importance to us. Nigeria and the Nordics are key partners in an array of areas, not only global and regional security, but also trade and investment, promoting human rights and democracy, as well as combating climate change.”
Corroborating the Swedish Minister words, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Iceland, Ms Thórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörd Gylfadóttir, said the visit is for dialogue and deep discussions; stressing that: “We share fundamental values, and we believe in the rule-based order and as well that the African continent needs to be represented stronger and better in the multilateral system, which is a system that we believe in and we truly need to continue.”
On her part, Under Secretary for Foreign Policy, Denmark, Ms Eva Marie Frida Barløse, said “This visit of the Nordic group is a reflection of the increased importance that we attach to engaging more with Nigeria, and I look very much forward to the conversation and the increased dialogue with you.”
Also, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Finland, Elina Valtonen,, said the visit was meant “to further strengthen our partnership and deepen our friendship.”
The State Secretary for International Development, Norway, Ms Bjørg Sandkjær, said: “We’ll be able to talk a bit more, I think, about the strong focus that the Nordic countries have on democracy, the rule of law, and respect for human rights.
“And we also welcome the very close collaboration between our countries on these issues, including in multilateral forums, as has been – has been mentioned.”
In his response, Tuggar said that Nigeria and the Nordic countries share the same democratic ideals.
The Minister while welcoming the support of the Nordic countries for the reform of the United Nations organs, said: “We also aspire to the same democratic ideals, and I’m happy that you mentioned your support to see a reform of the United Nations Security Council, permanent members, and, of course, our aspiration to become not only a permanent member, but then also, you know, maybe closer.
“We’re looking at membership in the United Nations Security Council. And, of course, this aspiration for democratising the global governing institutions of the planet goes beyond the United Nations.
“That’s why we’re also aspiring to become a member of the G7 important bodies.” He also commended the Nordic countries for their efforts towards ensuring peace and security in the Lake Chad region.”
He added that: “And, of course, the good work that all the countries have been doing in the Lake Chad region is something that is not unnoticed by Nigeria, and it’s something that we really appreciate and that we treasure.
“We’re looking to engage, to learn so much from all the countries, because the Nordic region is one that excels in terms of the circular economy. This is something that we feel we can do a lot together.
Delta State Government has taken a firm step on the implementation of the new minimum wage with a directive to the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu, and the Commissioner for Finance, Chief Fidelis Tilije, to hold talks with the State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), on its implementation in the state.
The State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, announced this on Wednesday while briefing newsmen after the State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting presided over by the Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori at Government House, Asaba.
Dr. Osuoza said the talks between the government and the organized labour would revolve round the consequential adjustments of the new wage.
The Commissioner also said the State Exco also approved the payment of N3.55bn as counterpart funding for the 2024 Universal Basic Education Programme in the state. He said Exco also approved the appointment of Obi Sunday Ubaka Ogboli as Obi of Issele-Mkpitime in Aniocha North Local Government Area of the state.
The Information Commissioner disclosed that Exco also approved the reconstruction of Ohoror-Bomadi Road; construction of Olomoro-Igbide Road; construction of Emevor-Ivrogbo-Orogun Road Phase 2; Otekpo Road in Ellu and Idumu-Etiti Street with a spur to market Road, Owere-Olubo.
Others include; the rehabilitation and asphalt overlay of failed sections of NNPC Housing Complex Road, Uvwie Local Government Area; Ekeye-Ovedhe close in Okumagba Layout, Warri; General Hospital Road, Oghara in Ethiope West Local Government Area; Old Sapele/ Warri Road from Amukpe Junction to Ikwuehu, with a spur to Ayemidejor Close in Sapele Local Government Area, and Orerokpe-Okulohor-Oviri Road; and Osubi- Okuokoko road and environs, Phase 1.
Also approved are internal roads and drains in Kurutie, Obitobon-Elolo-Ajaokurogbo-Orubu Road Phase 2, Ogidigben; Kurutie internal roads Phase 2; Old Sapele Road to Amukpe to Ikwewu Community with a spur to Ayemidejor Close in Amukpe, Okeye and Iyke Oputa Street, Aboh in Ndokwa East Local Government Area and Issele-Azagba-Otulu road in Aniocha North and South Local Government Areas.
The Commissioner also said Governor Oborevwori decried the prevalent hardship in the country and directed the Commissioner for Agriculture and the Chief Job Creation Officer to bring up programmes that would cushion the effect of the hardship, especially on youths across the state.
Speaking to journalists at the briefing, the State Commissioner for Works (Rural and Riverine Roads), Mr. Charles Aniagwu said the approvals buttress Governor Oborevwori’s Meaningful Development plans across the state with 23 out of 25 local government areas directly impacted by the Exco new approvals.
Speaking on the approval for the reclamation of gully erosion site along Okpanam-Ibusa bypass Road, the State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, said the approval would enable the state government reclaim areas affected by gully erosion for the sustainability of the new road.
Also speaking during the post-Exco briefing, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, said the state Exco approved the purchase of two Computerised Tomography (CT) scanning machines, one each for the Central Hospital, Warri, and the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH), Oghara.
Dr. Onojaeme disclosed that the approval for the purchase of the medical equipment was very significant as it is used for diagnosing diseases and internal injuries in the health care delivery sector, adding that the CT scan is for the benefits of all Deltans.
According to him, the Ministry of Health had got approval to renovate over 150 primary health centres (PHCs) across the state because of its importance in the health care delivery system, saying “if Primary Health care facilities are properly taken care of, more then 80 per cent of health challenges would have been addressed.”
The recent misguided propaganda by the Delta State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to misinform the public on the debt management measures being undertaken by the administration of His Excellency, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, was, at best, a shameless act of its characteristic duplicitousness.
In the release signed by its Publicity Secretary, Valentine Onojeguo, the APC merely tried to disinform the public by attempting to play down the significance of Governor Oborevwori’s act of responsibility in reducing the debt profile of the State to ensure greater financial stability and sounder economic health.
It is indeed strange that the APC in Delta State would pretend not to know the origin and the truth about the debt profile of the nation and the States. Let us remind them that through the mismanagement of the national economy by the APC-led Federal Government, from 2015 when it took over the reins of government with President Muhammadu Buhari, it has presided over heavy and reckless borrowing, escalating the national debt stock from about N7 trillion after the 16 years of the PDP governance, to over N90 trillion under its eight years, leading to a situation in which 97% of Nigeria’s national revenue was devoted to debt servicing and the attendant reduced revenue allocations to States and Local Governments.
While it failed woefully in managing the crude oil production capacity of the nation which it brought from over two million barrels per day to a low of about one million BPD, a huge chunk of the revenue receipts from even the low output had been devoted to their corruptive importation of petroleum products and payment of fuel subsidy, by which little or nothing was being returned to the federation account.
The situation was further worsened by its poor fiscal and monetary policies which steadily and increasingly devalued the Naira and posed inflationary difficulties across all sectors and segments of the nation.
The former Minister of Finance under Buhari, Zainab Ahmed, openly admitted in 2021 that, revenues were low and so were federal allocations to the States and Local Governments.
“The crash of the crude oil prices really hit us very hard in terms of revenue.
Those were the words of the former Minister of Finance of the APC government on the national economy.
Not only did the federal government try to sustain the economy purely on loans and more loans which were not applied to productive sectors nor effectively and equitably to infrastructural development, it also resorted to printing money which is the worst style of economic management.
During a Senate Committee hearing in March 2024, the current Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, gave a sordid picture of how the APC mismanaged the national economy, from 2015 to 2023.
“It came from eight years of just printing money not matched by productivity. It’s not like when you earn dollars, and you free the naira alongside it. We are going to audit even the N22.7 trillion printed aimlessly. The consequence of the eight years of printing money without productivity is high inflation confronting the country now,” he said.
Given this background of APC management of the economy from 2015 to 2023, as we have seen attested to by its Ministers of Finance, it can only be shameless pretence, though in line with its usual deceitfulness, for the APC to question why component States of the federation had to source market funds, including loans and bonds, to be able to function effectively in the service of their people.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, Lagos, an APC State, led in the borrowing with close to N1 trillion.
“Lagos State recorded the highest domestic debt in Q2 2023 with N996.44 billion (and) recorded the highest external debt with US$ 1.26 billion, followed by Kaduna with US$569.38 million.”
Delta State, like all other States could not have been an exception in seeking ways and means to serve its people. With a total exposure of about N450 billion accumulated through the years into the first quarter of 2023, as forced mostly by consequence of APC mismanagement of the national economy, Delta State holds neither the highest domestic nor external debt, and the immediate past administration of His Excellency, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, clearly outlined the infrastructure projects on which borrowed funds were applied, as are visible across the State.
However, in the current dispensation, even when the APC federal government and some other States have continued to borrow, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has decided not only to hem borrowing but also to pay up and reduce inherited loans and interests in order to safeguard the State from the kind of debt service burden that has crippled the nation under the leadership of the APC.
Such commitment is not only noble, but can only be executed through a deep sense of leadership responsibility and financial prudence as Oborevwori is demonstrating.
In his 2024 budget appropriation, he was emphatic about keeping the State expenditure within revenue limits, reducing its debt profile and ensuring that the administration does not build new inflationary pressure through extra budgetary funding. In simple terms, his government is averse to borrowing, profligacy and expenditures that are not planned nor budgeted for.
It was for this reason that he cut down on various items relating to executive cost of running government while he increased the budget volume for projects and programmes directly related to providing for the people, communities and workers.
This was demonstrated in the reduction of Overhead Cost by N9.7 billion or 8.35%, from N116.2 billion in 2023 to N106.5 billion in 2024; the reduction of the vote for Grants and Contributions by N4.7 billion or 32%, from N14.7 billion in 2023 to N10 billion in 2024; the reduction of the capital vote for the Administration sector by N20.9 billion or 48%, from N43.6 billion in 2023 to N22.7 billion in 2024; and the drastic reduction of Contingency provision by N8.2 billion or 61.7%, from N13.3 billion in 2023 to just N5.1 billion in 2024.
While the budget made a provision of N50 billion for possible receipts from loans, it is on record that the administration has not borrowed a dime in its almost fifteen months, notwithstanding the financial requirements for the execution of high level infrastructure projects, workers and social welfare investments, and human capital development programmes being churned out across the State.
Rather, Oborevwori has saved over N205 billion through financial efficiency and gone on to reduce the State debt profile by N180 billion.
It is these achievements in the financial management of the State that the APC is quarreling with.
But see why we will not bother about their charade: They want the State to be run the way APC has misrun the national economy since 2015, in which through their reckless borrowings they led Nigeria into servicing its debts hanging with over 97% of its national revenue, and borrowing evermore in the attempt to sustain the economy on borrowed life wire, while actually crashing it. God forbid that to happen in Delta.
On the contrary, Oborevwori is determined to manage Delta into a debt-free State. Thankfully, from the relative increase in oil production output, especially in Delta as occasioned by Oborevwori’s efficient management of relations with oil producing communities, there is increased allocation to the State and he is focused on managing the State economy within its means, including intensified IGR, to administer the State in such manner that debts would not be left for coming generations and administrations to inherit as the APC does and would want to see in Delta State.
Signed:
Engr. Dan Ossai, MNSE, CEng. State Secretary, PDP, Delta State.
Government have no excuses to make on why the life of the citizens are not being impacted as it remains accountable for policies that are not compatible to the needs of its people.
This was the main thrust at the celebration of the International Youth Day in Abuja on Monday.
This year celebrates the power and potential of young people, focusing on how government will be more committed to action and held accountable for the policies that are not compatible to the needs of citizens, and key discussions centered on gender equality, climate action, decent work, and employability.
Tagged, “From Awareness to Action: empowering youth in Nigeria for the SDGs,” stakeholders said more actions are needed since we are all aware of the problem youth are facing, which include bridging digital divides, boosting investments in education, critical thinking and information literacy, tackling the gender biases that often dominate the tech industry, and supporting young innovators in expanding digital solutions in bringing about changes we all yearning for and development.
The communication manager (NGYouthSDGs), Aliyu Yusuf speaking at the celebration, said the goal and objective of the organisation, the Nigeria Youth SDGs (NGYouthSDGs) registered as Network of Youth for Sustainable Initiative is a youth led civil society organisation advocating for meaningful youth engagement in policies and programmes for youth to lead and thrive.
He added that NGYouthSDGs focuses on education and capacity development, livelihoods and employment and civic participation for young people.
He noted that NGYouthSDGs began as an unregistered youth group in 2017 and got registered in 2021 to ensure that it can influence the process of Nigeria achieving sustainable development with the support of her young people”.
He further recognized the support of the following organisations: Oxfam in Nigeria, African Activists for Climate Justice, Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation, International Labour Organisation. Amnesty International Nigeria, Aid for Rural Education Advancement Initiative, and Connected Development.

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has approved the release of over N300million as grant to 389 medical doctors in the State Civil Service who are on residency training.
The released fund will cover two consecutive years – 2023-2024 – Residency Training Grant requirements with payments ranging from N800,000 to N900,000 per resident doctor for each year.
A total of 215 resident doctors received the funding for the year 2023, while 174 resident doctors have so far received the training grant in 2024 in the State.
With this milestone, the administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara has set a new record in the healthcare funding as residency training grant has only been paid twice in the past 16 years, with the last paid in 2018.
By this strategic action, Governor Fubara, has recommitted the resolve of his administration towards ensuring that the training initiative aimed at supporting the professional development of doctors, at both the Junior and Senior residency cadres, is not frustrated due to absence of the requisite grants that serve as enduring incentives to the health personnel.
It also shows that Governor Fubara considers such comprehensive support for residency training as strategic investment in improving the capacity of healthcare personnel which will eventually enhance the quality of healthcare services available to Rivers people in the health sector.
Governor Fubara particularly expressed the belief that with such support from his administration, the benefitting medical doctors will be dutiful with the residency training, which is an essential stage of graduate medical education, to acquire the competence needed to enable them offer the best service while working in the employ of the state government.
Reacting to the groundbreaking achievement, Hon Commissioner for Health, Dr Adaeze Chidinma Oreh, acknowledged the importance of the course updates and components to the capacity of the personnel to address the challenges in quality healthcare delivery in the State.
Dr Oreh said: “These are essential for doctors to stay current with the latest medical knowledge and practices, ensuring they can provide the best possible care to patients.
“Research is a critical component of medical training, and these funds help cover the costs associated with developing and presenting research proposals and dissertations.
“Also, travelling to examination centres can be costly, especially for doctors stationed in various parts of the State. For these examinations which are usually held outside the State, and in some cases, outside the country, this funding ensures that transportation costs do not hinder their ability to attend necessary examinations,” she added.
Dr Oreh further spoke on the burden examination fees pose on medical personnel, saying: “The examination fees for the Parts I and II residency exams are very expensive, and by covering these fees, the government ensures that financial constraints do not prevent doctors from advancing in their careers.”
She thanked the Governor for paying priority attention to the welfare needs of personnel in the health sector, explaining that the Governor’s proactive action and political will to address critical issues that impede human capacity development was worthy of emulation.
The commissioner emphasised that the gesture of Governor Fubara, barely one year in office, will ultimately yield better health outcomes for Rivers people in particular and Nigerians at large.

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Friday, assured the management of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) of robust partnership in delivering sustainable mega projects that would enhance socio-economic lives of Deltans.
Governor Oborevwori gave the assurance when he received the Managing Director of the NDDC, Dr Sam Ogbuku and his management team in Asaba.
The Governor who frowned at the litany of abandoned NDDC projects in the state and the region, expressed the readiness of his administration to partner with the interventionist agency to complete some of the projects and execute new ones.
While commending Ogbuku for his innovations geared at making the NDDC more transparent and accountable to the people of the region, he called for stakeholders engagements to align development plans.
He said: “I know you are competent and I know what you are doing, but I want to say something because I am a realist. When I came in, there were some projects that the NDDC was doing that they are unable to complete.
“There are abandoned projects and I am happy that you mentioned it here. We have completed some of those projects. Also the Bomadi road, there is one of the bridges there, we went and did it; that was last year.
“And even when you are talking about the Sector C 2, which is from Ughelli to Asaba, it’s a federal road but we are doing it. The DSC and Effurun roundabouts are all federal roads but we are doing them.
“We engaged Julius Berger for those projects because we are the ones using the roads even though they are federal roads. Other people that are coming are just visitors. So you must make your place good for people to pass.
“The issue of partnership is very key. Not only to partner with the multi-nationals but also partnership with the state is very good.
“When the NDDC is on the same page with the governors of the Niger Delta, we will be able to plan and see what you people want to do, so that when we are doing our budgets, we will know what to budget for. Not that we budget for something and the NDDC will also budget for the same thing; it becomes a problem.
“There was one incident that happened, a road that was given to a contractor, we intervened in the project but we were shocked that that same road, they went and put the signpost of NDDC on it in December.
“They removed the signpost of Delta state and put their own and took pictures. My Chief Press Secretary had to issue a press statement. Why am I saying this? So that a job that you have awarded and the person abandoned it and we decided to intervene, the person shouldn’t come to you to collect money for job that the state did.
“If we partner, there is no way they can go and collect the money. So I will also let you know that any of these projects that we are going to intervene, we will write to you people; so that no contractor will collect money for job not done.
“I am also aware that the Ugono road, about 2 kilometres, that job was awarded and they only came and tried to do the drains and they pulled out. That job has been completed by us and many other roads.
“It is also your fault to award contracts that you will not be able to finance. Sometimes, these contractors are not paid, so they are frustrated and have no choice but to pull out.
“Now that we are discussing, it will help us partner well. The NDDC is an interventionist agency, they have to assist the people in this region. This is about the oldest interventionist agency in the whole of this country.
“We have the highest stake because the oil will produce is what the nation feeds on today. So where is our benefits? Look at the East-West road, we are having challenges there.
“There is nothing wrong if you can provide palliatives on the road. You have the capacity to intervene. I was told that it is under the Federal Ministry of Works but it is in this region.
“Anything you do in this region, those are the things that you will be remembered for. The way you are talking about partnership, is the way to go because we want the region to succeed.
“So we will continue to partner to move our region forward. We must do something that we should be remembered for. This will be service to both our people and the nation.”
Governor Oborevwori also tasked the NDDC on effective monitoring of its projects to ensure that the people get value for their money.
“Monitoring is one important thing that you people need to do. Please ensure you monitor your projects. Don’t just leave them in the hands of the people in the state because at the end of the day, it is the Managing Director and his team they will call.
“As the highest oil producing state in the region, we need these projects. Be rest assured that Delta state is ready to partner NDDC.
“Write to us when you have important projects that you can’t handle, we can take it over or do a joint venture to execute the project. We are ready because any project in the state, it is our people that will benefit the most.
“It was last week I took a decision to take over the Ohoror-Bomadi road, because without that road, you cannot even have access to the Akugbene road that you want to do,” he added.
Earlier, Dr. Ogbuku said he was in Delta to discuss issues of mutual benefits between NDDC and the Delta State Government, adding that as the largest oil producing state in the country, Delta would have a large portion of the recently passed NDDC budget.
Dr. Ogbuku further said that the management was building a transformative and transparent NDDC that is accountable to the people of the Niger Delta and appealed to the Delta State Government for partnership with the Commission and Chevron for the construction of the Omadino-Okerenkoko-Escravos Road and bridges, adding that when completed, it will help improve the economy of Delta State.
Ogbuku also said the NDDC was compiling a data base of Niger Delta Youths to engage in their areas of passion and competence for growth opportunities, adding that KPMG has been commissioned to design a Corporate Governance Structure for the NDDC.

Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori to ensure Meaningful Development in all areas and sectors of Delta State, as espoused in the MORE Agenda. ‘’My excitement also stems from the fact that as a former banker myself, I am truly impressed by the pledge of professionalism and the range of cutting edge diverse services, special offers, as well as the other regular comprehensive banking and financial products, usually associated with big commercial banks, which Anioma Micro Finance Bank Limited has promised to deliver to our people. ‘’There is no doubt whatsoever that Anioma Micro Finance Bank Limited is well located in Ubulu-Uku to serve our people adequately, especially since the town shares boundaries with Ogwashi-Uku to the east, Obior to the west, Issele-Uku to the north, and Ubulu-Unor to the south, which positions it for easy accessibility and gives our people a much-needed alternative to avail themselves of seamless modern banking services, which they can only enjoy when they travel to urban centres. Addressing journalists, the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr. CMO Mordi, a retired Director of Research at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said the journey to establish the Anioma Microfinance Bank has been both rigorous and unprecedented. He said the bank’s formation received its initial approval in principle from the CBN on September 20 2023, and following a thorough inspection by the CBN on March 1, 2024, the bank was granted its final approval on May 1, 2024. Mr Mordi said the bank is equipped with Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), the first of its kind in the neighbourhood, and the cards issued would have universal usability, ensuring that customers can seamlessly conduct transactions locally and internationally. ‘’The bank aims to provide accessible banking services previously available only in urban centres, offering a range of financial products including savings accounts, loans, and business support services’’ he said. Meanwhile, the Palace Secretary, Barrister Obazei, representing the Obi of Ubulu-Uku, was also present at the unveiling ceremony and took the opportunity to appeal for the bank’s loan facilities to be extended to entrepreneurial indigenes. The ceremony reached its climax with the commissioning of the bank by the information commissioner, as well as a guided tour around the facility, allowing guests a peak into the bank. With its strategic location, Anioma Microfinance Bank is set to serve the neighbouring communities of Ogwashi-Uku, Obior, Issele-Uku, and Ubulu-Unor, fostering economic growth and development in the region.

The statement, signed by Chairman Emmanuel Enebeli and Secretary Shedrack Onitsha, highlighted a disturbing surge in kidnapping activities in recent weeks. It stated that major highways, including the Sapele-Effurun road and the East-West Road between Agbarho and Ughelli, have become hotspots for kidnappings and armed robbery attacks. It stated that travelers on these routes face significant risks, with reports of daily incidents.

The forum further stated that the peaceful community of Egbo-Urhe in Ughelli South Local Government Area is currently under siege by kidnappers.
“The once peaceful community of Egbo-Urhe in Ughelli South local government area is currently under siege by kidnappers”.
“From Ughelli to Effurun, Sapele, Oghara, Abraka, and Agbor, no area is considered safe as kidnappers target victims indiscriminately. This pervasive threat has instilled fear among families, disrupted businesses, and compromised the overall safety of citizens.”
In response to this escalating crisis, the Forum has urged the Inspector General of Police and the Delta State Commissioner of Police to deploy additional resources and personnel to the affected areas.
It emphasized the necessity of swift and decisive action to dismantle criminal networks and restore confidence in the security apparatus.
Furthermore, the DOPF appealed to the state government to support security agencies with logistics and other tools to enhance intelligence gathering and community policing initiatives.
“Strengthening collaboration between security agencies and local vigilante groups is seen as crucial to creating a formidable defense against these threats.”
In addition to addressing immediate security concerns, the forum called on the state government to engage in meaningful dialogue with herder communities. Such discussions are essential to addressing the underlying issues contributing to the attacks and fostering peaceful coexistence to prevent future conflicts.
The statement highlighted the severe impact on local agriculture, noting that many Deltans face starvation because they cannot safely access their farms.
“The safety and security of our citizens are paramount, and we must all work together to put an end to these acts of violence and ensure a safe and prosperous Delta State,” the statement concluded.
