EU Emphasizes Importance of Media to Democracy

The European Union (EU) has emphasized the importance of free, independent and pluralistic media to resilient and healthy democracies, even as it lamented that press freedom is at stake in most parts of the world today.

The EU in a statement on the World Press Freedom Day lamented that journalists, media workers and all those who bring independent quality information to the public, shed light on the gross human rights violations and atrocities and hold those in power to account increasingly face discredit, threats and attacks, including through disinformation.

The EU said while: “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers,” noted that laid down in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 75 years ago, the protection of freedom of expression remains a key priority for EU human rights action.

The EU in the statement on Tuesday said: “This year we join UNESCO in emphasizing that, today more than ever, freedom of expression is crucial for all other human rights and contributes decisively to ‘Shaping a Future of Rights’.

It said: “Reporters in an attacked Ukraine, journalists in Belarus and Afghanistan, independent media in the Middle East and North Africa, local journalists in Central America, the Nobel Prize laureates in the Philippines and Russia and many other media workers worldwide, including in Europe, continue to pay a high price for exercising their profession.

“Women journalists are particularly vulnerable to threats and increasing attacks, both offline and online. They are exposed to stigmatization, sexist hate speech, trolling, sexual and gender-based violence and even murder. 73% of women journalists have experienced online threats, abuse and harassment in the course of their work. We have never seen as many women journalists in detention as today.

“As a staunch defender of the right to freedom of expression, the EU condemn all forms of threats and violence against journalists and support media workers in danger through local missions and via dedicated programmes, such as the Safejournalists platform in the Western Balkans, the Support to independent media and fundamental freedoms project in Cambodia and the Media Resilience programme in Afghanistan.
In parallel, the EU is taking action within the Union: countering Strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPP), regulating digital services and markets, and proposing an EU Media Freedom Act.

“Simultaneously, we are building up critical capacity to counter foreign information manipulation and interference, and to help citizens in Europe strengthen their resilience to disinformation, manipulation and propaganda, with initiatives such as the EUvsDisinfo platform and the European Digital Media Observatory.
Defending and promoting press freedom is a universal mission that knows no borders. The EU will remain committed to engage with governments, the media and civil society, both in international fora as well as at the local level, to take initiative and strengthen press freedom around the world.”

Sudan: Igbos were among the first evacuees, FG Insists

The Federal Government has clarified that Igbos were among the first set of Nigerians that were evacuated crisis ridden Sudan.

The Nigerian government especially the
Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa was called out by a stranded Nigerian in Sudan on the social media for allegedly denying Igbos lift in the bus chartered to convey stranded Nigerians from Khartoum to Cairo, in Egypt.

A statement on Tuesday by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Francisca Omayuli read:
“The attention of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been drawn to a video making the rounds on the social media of an unidentified man with no indication of his contact details nor location, claiming that the Nigerian Embassy in Khartoum, Sudan, refused to evacuate Igbos resident in Sudan.

“The Ministry has investigated the allegation and can assure Nigerians that there is no truth whatsoever to the allegation. The Nigerian Embassy in Khartoum confirmed that evacuees of Igbo extraction were among the first batch of 637 Nigerians evacuated to Aswan Border, Egypt where they are presently awaiting their eventual return to Nigeria.

“In addition, the Embassy noted that before the commencement of the movement of buses deployed for the evacuation exercise in Khartoum, there were scuffles between the students and other Nigerian residents due to the limited number of buses. However, more buses were made available to accommodate every Nigerian national in Sudan who indicated interest to be evacuated.”

Omayuli added that: “It is therefore, surprising that such a misleading allegation could be leveled against officials of the Embassy who had worked tirelessly on the evacuation exercise.
To this end, the general public is advised to disregard the allegation.”

Shutdown Benue ethanol company put up structure to arrest pollution

Shutdown Benue ethanol company put up structure to arrest pollution

Shut ethanol- producing company, Pure Biotech Company Limited has put up a state of the art facility to control its emission of pollutant into River Benue.

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) and the Nigeria Police Force had sealed off the company on 17th April, 2023 for contravening environmental law by discharging pollutants into public water system.

The company was subsequently opened last week when it was able to convince NESREA that necessary facilities and control have been put in place to control emission of pollutants into public water system.

Among the facilities install is a state-of-the-art Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), which is deployed to prevent the reoccurrence of wastewater contamination, which was the reason for its shutdown.

In an interview with our correspondent on Tuesday, the Manager, Corporate Communications and Public Relations of the company, Mr Stephen Numbeve,, said his organisation has taken the necessary step to get reopened and would never go through the route that brought the clampdown.

He admitted the accidental discharge of untreated effluent (wastewater) into the Benue River in Bezu Village where the factory is located, has led to severe pollution, and could not blame the environmental right groups and other stakeholders call for the shut down of the Chinese factory.

Numbeve said the organisation have learnt a big lesson, which made it to take the decision to optimise its Environmental Management System (EMS) by completing its Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process.

This, he said has been approved and awaiting EIS certification by the Federal Ministry of Environment.

He said: “It is important to make it clear that the said discharge was not a continuous one as being widely reported. It occurred just that moment while the facility’s Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) then was under a test run. We erred, we were sanctioned according to the environmental laws, our facility was sealed off by NESREA on 17th April for almost two (2) weeks, but most importantly, we have learnt our lessons!

“After complying with stipulated conditions for unsealing in line NESREA’s enforcement procedures, including conducting independent physicochemical analysis, ascertaining the functionality of ETP, payment of fines, our company was unsealed on 29th April, 2023, we have resumed operations”.

Numbeve said the company had equipped its laboratory to ensure that product, effluent and air quality analysis were carried out to ensure that all parameters meet standards and regulations of relevant bodies.

“We are adopting circular economy approach to waste management. Now, all solid and liquid wastes are converted into bio-gas, fertiliser, and even the treated wastewater now being recycled.

“Nothing is to be discharged into the environment or river, anymore! We encourage the general public to take a tour to the company and see things for yourselves,” he said.

He said Pure Biotech Company Limited was law abiding and would continually improve on its systems and programs toward protecting the environment and human health.

“Pure Biotech Company Limited has invested a fortune to optimize her waste management mechanisms. Our vision is to become a leading environmental friendly company in Benue State and the North Central Nigeria.

“Pure Biotech Company Limited, beside the incident, is not discharging any effluent into the environment, river or any water body whatsoever.

The PR manager said the company was embarking on several Corporate Social Responsibility programmes, such as the provision of clean water, education, healthcare, farm support, employment opportunities for the indigenes.

Why We Supported Oborevwori For Delta Governor – Obidients Group

A group of the Obidients Movement in Delta State has revealed that they abandoned the Labour Party candidate to vote for Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori of the PDP in the Delta State Governorship election because they were convinced he would prioritise good governance and foster economic prosperity of the people of the state.

The disclosure was contained in a public statement released over the weekend by coordinators of the Obidients groups in Isoko Nation.

The statement which was signed by Fred Elohor Anthonia and Okawa Leslie Okezi for the Isoko North and Isoko South, respectively, also revealed that their support for Rt Hon Oborevwori was facilitated by the Managing Director of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, Bashorun Askia Ogieh, who particularly engaged them.

The group explained that as a non-partisan movement, they are guided by modest ideologies that promote good governance and, as such, shop for credible personalities around Nigerian political space and support them to victory in elections so as to engender socioeconomic development to the people.

“On that note, the Obidient Movement in Isoko Nation worked for Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori,” the statement read.

Explaining further, the said their disposition was due to the fact that Hon Askia Ogieh, the Udu of Isoko Nation, made firm commitments to them “that Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori would prioritize good governance and foster economic prosperity of the people of Delta State.”

The group said their public statement became necessary “in order to put the record straight and address obvious false claims” by some “faceless and dubious” persons who want to take credit in order to reap where they did not sow in the coming political dispensation.

While re-asserting that Chief Ogieh was the “face and name” of the PDP engagement with the Obidients in Isoko Nation, they congratulated Rt Hon Oborevwori on his emergence and restated their conviction on his capacity to deliver on their expectations.

-By Aruoriwo Ivovi:

As Nigeria joins the global community in celebrating the 2023 International Workers’ Day, the Delta State Head of Service, Mr. Reginald Bayoko has commended civil servants in the state for their hard work, dedication, loyalty and patriotism towards the growth and development of Delta State.

The Delta Head of Service in a goodwill message to commemorate the 2023 International Workers Day also known as May Day, acknowledged the contributions and sacrifices of workers in the state whom hedescribed as indispensable assets in the task of nation building.

He said the celebration was a continuation of the tradition of recognizing the value of workers whom he termed as vital partners in progress.

While describing the theme of the 2023 May Day Celebration which is “Workers’ Rights and Socio-Economic Justice” as apt, the Delta HoS lauded the current administration for not only upholding the rights of workers in the state but for the robust synergy and cooperation that existed between the political class and the civil servants.

He particularly paid glowing tributes to the Governor of the State, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, CON for his untiring efforts toward enhancing the welfare of public servants in the state including the payment of pensions and retirement benefits to retirees and the ‘unforgettable’ construction of the ultra-modern Professor Chike Edozien Secretariat Complex that houses over 27 Ministries.

Mr. Bayoko who described Okowa as a labour friendly governor, noted that the governor would be remembered for his various landmark achievements including industrial stability and harmony in the State.

In the same vein, the Head of Service reiterated his congratulations to the Governor-elect, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori and expressed optimism that the Governor-Elect would consolidate on the existing robust relationship between labour and government already established by the Okowa administration.

While also commending labour leaders in the state for their understanding and pursuing their agitations in a peaceful and civilized manner, the Head of Service assured them of the state government commitment in maintaining industrial harmony and where inevitable disagreement occurs, they will be resolved dispassionately.

Drug consignments hidden in imported car, food items seized at Lagos airport, seaport

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have seized at the Tincan port in Lagos 126 parcels of Canadian Loud, a synthetic strain of cannabis, weighing 63 kilogrammes concealed in a used Toyota Corolla car imported from Toronto, Canada.

This is even as an attempt by a freight agent, Mordi Chukwuemeka Samuel, to export 900 grammes of the same substance, Loud, hidden inside walls of a travelling bag containing food items, to Kenya, was thwarted by anti-narcotics officers at the SAHCO export shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos on Saturday.

A statement by the spokesman of NDLEA, Femi Babafemi on Sunday read that when Mordi presented the bag, which he claimed contained food items for export, operatives noticed that in the course of searching the consignment, the side walls of the bag were unevenly bloated, after which they dismantled the false packings and recovered the illicit substance.

He disclosed that on Friday, NDLEA operatives at the Tincan port intercepted 63 kilogrammes Canadian Loud packed in bags in the boot of one of the five used vehicles in a container marked, TLLU4840762 coming from Toronto via Montreal, during a joint examination with other stakeholders at the port.

Similarly, men of the agency’s Directorate of Operations and Investigation (DOGI) attached to courier firms last Thursday intercepted 1.53 kilogrammes skunk concealed in old hard drives meant for export to Dubai, United Arab Emirate.

In Benue, operatives recovered 859 bottles of codeine based syrup weighing 117.3 kilogrammes abandoned by a suspected dealer about two kilometres away from NDLEA check point along Enugu – Otukpo road last Wednesday, while two suspects: Kabiru Muhammed, 35, and Isah Muhammed, 28, were arrested with 20 blocks of cannabis weighing 11.2 kilogrammes concealed in a bag of cassava flakes (garri) along Zaria-Kano road, Kano last Friday.

He disclosed that no fewer than seven bags of cannabis with a gross weight of 74.5 kilogrammes were recovered when operatives raided an uncompleted building located in a bush in Ala town, Akure area of Ondo state just as 60 kilogrammes of the same substance concealed among footwears in two jumbo sacks were recovered from one Aminu Mohammed along Ibadan – Oyo road, Oyo state while waiting to board a vehicle to Kebbi State.

In Adamawa state, NDLEA operatives last Saturday raided a clandestine factory in Mubi, where a new psychoactive substance, Akuskura, was being produced in large quantity and distributed to Chad, Cameroon and Niger Republic. He said that at the time of the raid, production activities were ongoing in the premises.

Meanwhile, the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Retd) while commending the officers and men of MMIA, Tincan, DOGI, Kano, Ondo, Oyo, Benue and Adamawa Commands of the agency for their vigilance and professionalism in the discharge of their responsibilities, however charged them and their colleagues across the country not to rest on their oars.

Sudan: FG Gives Update on Evacuation of Nigerians

The Federal Government has said that 637 Nigerian evacuated from troubled Sudan had arrived the identified safe borders at Aswan, Egypt and are undergoing necessary documentation and clearance before admission into the Egyptian territory for their eventual evacuation to Nigeria, with the second batch of the evacuees in 29 buses slated for Saturday.

A statement jointly issued on Saturday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development on the evacuation of Nigerians caught up in the ongoing crisis in Sudan, said the information was made available to the Situation Room on Friday.

The statement read that: “The Ministers noted that the first batch of 13 buses conveying 637 evacuees had arrived the identified safe borders at Aswan, Egypt and are undergoing necessary documentation and clearance before admission into the Egyptian territory for their eventual evacuation to Nigeria.

“The movement of the second batch of 29 buses will commence on Saturday, 29th April, 2023. The evacuees are advised to be at the designated locations with only one luggage. Contrary to insinuations on the social media, Embassy staff are very much on ground in Khartoum to coordinate the evacuation exercise to the very end. The students and other Nigerians awaiting evacuation from Khartoum, Sudan are therefore, advised to cooperate with them in order to ensure orderliness and proper documentation while embarking on the buses. This will go a long way in speeding up the process and avoiding unnecessary delays with documentation and clearance upon arrival at the Aswan, Egypt.”

The statement which was jointly signed by Amb. Janet Olisa, and Dr. Nasir Sani-Gwarzo said While the Federal Government empathizes with affected Nigerians, insisted that maintaining order amidst the desperate situation remains crucial to getting all interested Nigerians out of the war zone in record time before the expiration of the ceasefire, which has been extended by 72 hours.

The general public is also advised to discountenance unverified information being circulated on the social media as “some of them are either due to ignorance or sheer mischief,” the statement insisted that the outcry over the negotiated sum of $1.2 million for the buses hired for the exercise, is uncalled for.

It noted that the amount in question, was negotiated in a condition of war and where there are competing demands for same bus services by other countries also trying to evacuate their citizens, stating that: “Therefore, the cooperation and understanding of all and sundry is required to complement ongoing efforts aimed at ensuring the safe return of every Nigerian trapped in Sudan.”

It added that: “The Federal Government of Nigeria seizes this opportunity to extend appreciation to friendly countries who have in one way or the other assisted in bringing succour to Nigerians fleeing the war in Sudan. Particularly, Nigeria acknowledges the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for graciously assisting with the evacuation of eight Nigerians from Sudan to safety in its territory, from where they would be airlifted back to Nigeria.

“In the time being, the first batch of Nigerian evacuees who have arrived Aswan are expected to be airlifted to Nigeria in the coming hours by the Nigerian Air Force and Air Peace airline, who have been on standby for the operations.”

WFP Says 1/8th Nigerians in Acute Hunger

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has lamented that a total of 24.8 million people, or 1 out of 8 individuals, are experiencing acute hunger this year in the country.

The UN agency while disclosing that this situation is prone in 26 states of the country and the capital, Abuja, said it is scaling up to provide emergency food and nutrition assistance to 2.1 million people affected by conflict and in dire need of humanitarian assistance in the Northeast.

A statement on Saturday by the organisation read: “WFP is gravely concerned that years of armed conflict in northeast Nigeria is driving hunger and malnutrition, with millions in need of life-saving assistance and facing the risk of famine.

The statement added that the March Cadre Harmonisé projects that 4.3 million people in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states face severe hunger during the peak of the lean season between June and August 2023, with almost600,000 are on the brink of catastrophe, insisting that these people will face emergency levels of food insecurity, with extremely high rates of acute malnutrition and mortality in the absence of a sustained scale-up of humanitarian assistance.

WFP lamented that ongoing conflict has affected the nutrition status of children on several fronts, with 2 million children in the region projected to suffer from acute malnutrition and cases of severe acute malnutrition among children have quadrupled to 700,000.

The UN agency said: “With more than 4.3 million people also in need of food assistance in northwest Nigeria, resources for the northeast have been increasingly squeezed.

“A total of 24.8 million people, or 1 out of 8 individuals, are experiencing acute hunger this year in Nigeria’s 26 states and the capital, Abuja.

WFP said: “The more people in need of urgent food aassistance who go unassisted, the greater the risk of starvation and death among the most vulnerable, and the more people will be forced to resort to coping mechanisms such as survival sex, selling possessions and child labour.”

It added that: “A lack of assistance also increases the risk of youth recruitment into armed groups, as well as displaced populations returning to inaccessible areas where they are beyond the reach of humanitarian assistance and other social services.

“Chronic Insecurity is preventing many people in the north-east from growing the food they need or earning an income. In the last year, conflict has left households unable to leave their homes due to an increase in movement restrictions, killings and abduction of civilians, particularly in Borno where the violence is concentrated.”

It insisted that: “Thousands of people are left with only one month’s food supply as households in conflict-affected areas rely on minimal income to purchase food. The hunger crisis worsens an already bad situation for many families struggling with economic hardship, surging inflation, impacts of Russia-Ukraine war, the currency redesign policy, slow post-COVID-19 recovery and unprecedented floods in 2022 which limited agricultural production and overall food availability.”

WFP however disclosed that it requires US$190 million over the next six months to provide lifesaving food and nutrition assistance to the most vulnerable people, while raising the alarm that: “If urgent action is not taken, funding gaps mean that approximately four million people in the northeast will go without food assistance during the peak of the lean season.”

There is no reason for Tinubu to be afraid because… White Witches, Wizards Speak Out

  • White Witches, Wizards Speak Out
  • Say: We welcome Tinubu back to the country.

White Witches and Wizards Association of Nigeria, has warned aggrieved politicians not to scuttle the inauguration of the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on May 29 at the Eagle Square, Abuja.

The group boasted that Tinubu will be provided with no fewer than 300 witches and wizards to ensure that no harm comes his way, adding that they are unhappy about the manner in which politicians have conducted themselves since Tinubu was announced as the winner of the February 25 presidential poll.

Speaking to newsmen in Calabar, the group’s spokesman, Dr. Okhue Oboi, said they care about the unity of the nation and would safeguard

He said: “We welcome Tinubu back to the country. Recall that Tinubu emerged the winner at our group’s spiritual presidential election held about two months ago before the terrestrial February 25 presidential election. Now, we have reviewed the volatile developments in the country. We urge the aggrieved parties to give peace a chance because resorting to self-help will do more harm than good to the polity. There is no reason for Tinubu to be afraid because all the campaigns of calumny mounted against him are mere distractions. We are currently cleaning and detoxifying the Abuja environment where Tinubu will operate from.

“What Tinubu needs now is prayers of good health and long life from all Nigerians so he could deliver on his Renewed Hope promise for better life for all.”

Oboi, who spoke on the forthcoming governorship election in Kogi State, said the group has met with the three major tribes in the state and have aggregated their demands.

He said: “We have met with the Igala, Ebira and Yoruba population in the state. We met Igala people in Idah, Ebira people in Obehira and Yoruba people in Kabba and listened to them. We advise Dino Melaye to see us if he is desirous of realising his governorship dream. If he listens to our advice, he will laugh because the trees and waters of the confluence state will vote for him regardless of whether Governor Wike supports him or not.

“It will be in Melaye’s interest to see us too so he can smile. If he fails to see the witches and wizards, he will regret it because he will not win the election.”

AI Integration in Nigeria’s Financial Services Receives A Boost

3line Limited, one of the trailblazers and creators of secure payments platforms in Nigeria has organized a hackathon to explore the untapped opportunities for AI integration in the payment space.

The event, called Hack-It Challenge at Covenant University, is aimed to bring together tech-savvy youths to collaborate and develop innovative digital solutions that can address the challenges in the sector.

The participants were grouped into teams and guided to use an iterative product development method (Agile Scrum Framework) to enable digital dexterity, talent development, and team competition.

The hackathon resulted in various community-based solutions around wallets that made transactions easy and seamless, making it possible to transact with friends with ease

CEO of 3line Limited, Femi Omogbenigun, emphasized the importance of reaching out to young stars and mentoring them to become innovative and successful entrepreneurs.

He mentioned that the future of financial services would belong to the operators who leverage AI early and use it to solve problems in society.

According to Omogbenigun, the company organized a challenge with two objectives: to reach out to young stars and provide mentorship, and to showcase their commitment to innovation. The challenge aimed to engage with young people and gather insights into their perspectives on the future of payments and financial services.

Omogbenigun spoke about the potential for new technology to make payments easier and more seamless for consumers. He believes that the next game changer in payments will be a solution that solves these problems. Many of the students who participated in the challenge developed solutions around wallets to make transactions easier and more convenient, often with a community-based focus.

Omogbenigun said it was noticed that although the students demonstrated technical expertise, they lacked business pitch skills. He however said this is an area where mentorship can be particularly valuable, as it helps students to develop ideas that are bankable and can be built as a business with a structure in place.

Omogbenigun said while looking to the future of financial services, the importance of leveraging AI to solve problems in society needs to be emphasized, noting that: “While AI is not a new concept, the market is now ripe for its integration into financial services.”

Omogbenigun said that AI can help businesses become more efficient, offer better customer service, and improve business processes overall.

He disclosed that 3line Limited takes pride in being innovative and providing secure payments platforms in Nigeria. They are committed to promoting and fostering innovation in the sector, which is why they organized the Hack-It Challenge. He revealed that the winners of the hackathon were KiwiPay, Team Owo, and Quasars, who were awarded N2 million, N1 million, and N500,000 prizes, respectively.

The Hack-It Challenge successfully brought together young innovators in Nigeria and provided them with the opportunity to collaborate and create solutions that can transform the payment space. 3line Limited remains committed to promoting innovation in the sector and providing secure payments platforms that meet the needs of Nigerians.

Buhari Calls for strong interface between Africa, Diaspora

President Muhammadu Buhari has called for a strong interface among Africans and their Diasporas around the world.

Buhari, while speaking at the opening of the 2nd edition of Global African Diaspora Symposium, Abuja, 2023, with the theme “Building Stronger Connections Between Africa and the Global Diaspora”, said it would be a good platform for the promotion of the global Diaspora as a key resource for positive projection of Africa.

The President, who was represented by the Minister of Transport, Mu’azu Jaji Sambo said it was necessary for Africans to connect and build a common front and also lay down strategic frameworks to address the challenges arising in the new world.

He said: “Today presents another milestone in the history of our nation in hosting Africans and its Diaspora. The choice of Nigeria as its country is timely and historic in the face of our political transition to a new government presently.

“This symposium being the 2nd in the series talks on some very key objectives such as to create an interface for networking among Africans and other Disaporas around the world. To also promote the implementation and institutionalisation of Pan-Africanism at the United Nations through the celebration of the International decade for people of African descent, hoping that it becomes a platform for the promotion of the global Diaspora as a key resource for positively projecting Africa.

“This is why the theme of this symposium is apt and has been in tune with the current realities of the global scene.

“It is empirical for Africans at home and in the Diaspora to connect and build a common front and also lay down strategic frameworks to address the challenges arising in the new world.

“The best approach to connect the Diaspora for sustainable development is to harness its vast materials and resources whether in the continent or in the Diaspora.”

He added that: “It is expected that the objectives of this symposium lead to outcomes that portray the entire African Diaspora, a sense of belonging with an ease of entering and movement of the Diaspora into and around Africa.

Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, on her part, said it was high time Africans come together to tap into the vast opportunities of Diaspora so as to develop the continent.

Dabiri-Erewa noted that Africa needs to engage more with her Diaspora, stressing that: “It is us coming together. We have everything that should make us great.”

In her remark. the Chairman, Global Organizing Committee Global African Diaspora Symposium, Mrs Ibukun Odusote,, said all Africans must work together to achieve greatness.

She said: “Only Africans can develop Africa. This goal of developing the African continent may not be achievable without the involvement of ‘the Sixth Region of the African Union: The African Diaspora.

“It is by harnessing the skills and expertise of this sixth Region can our dreams of a better Africa can be achieved, even as those of us within Africa join hands with those in the Diaspora to carry out the task of building the Africa of our dream.”

Kashim Shettima: Of Binani, Alhaji Uba And Ribadu’s Body Language

-By James Bwala:

Alhaji Uba Dan’arewa, an APC stakeholder in Adamawa state, who attacked the Vice President elect, Senator Kashim Shettima in an audio by linking him to the declaration over the drama that happened – of Hudu, the INEC’s REC is not just speaking his mind as a rough politician but also speaking from the body language of his friend and associate- the former EFCC Boss and Aspirant for the guber race, who lost to Senator Aishatu Binani during the guber primaries in the state.

Linking Kashim Shettima to the script performed in Adamawa exposes Malam Nuhu Ribadu’s bitterness for losing the primary to Senator Aishatu Binani as well as the rigorousness of Uba Dan’arewa’s thinking. Kashim Shettima, who is acting on higher ground, cannot stoop low to meddle in an affair that allowed Binani, a rare kind of politician and serving Senator, to cry loud and long beyond Adamawa and seek Shettima’s script to sing her victory song. Nuhu Ribadu, for whom Uba Dan’arewa crosses party lines, has never made any positive impact on his political career in Adamawa and that is a record.

Names like Alhaji Uba Dan’arewa show the scrupulousness of conceited dreamers who like sitting in the political palace to think of happenings and to present fiction as realities in front of their hired master.

The audio recording that was sent to me yesterday has been listened to. It was a combination of a bitter loss and political foot troops wailing for their lord. Elections have come and gone, but for others, the hurt of losing their political post has persisted in disrupting their tranquility.

Even while Malam Nuhu Ribadu remains silent, his foot soldiers are spreading his resentment toward Senator Kashim Shettima, the vice president-elect, which is terrible and tragic.

The election in Adamawa is over, but individuals like Alhaji Uba Dan’arewa, who appeared to be interpreting his boss’s body language, are exposing how Malam Nuhu Ribadu may have been venting his rage outside the borders of Adamawa. In the audio recording, Alhaji Uba Dan’arewa frequently blames Kashim Shettima, who has been working on a separate platform. And for Malam Nuhu Ribadu. Failure is cruel. And for us because a ship can only have one captain, I said it again; Nuhu Ribadu does not have a position to head the northern elite in the upcoming administration despite his claims to be closer to Tinubu.

Alhaji Uba Dan’arewa forgot that Senator Aishatu Binani, who defeated three political giants to become the APC’s governorship candidate in Adamawa state, did so by popular majority and the need for change, which is sweet in political games, when he connected Kashim Shettima to Senator Binani’s victory in the primaries and subsequent issues that depict her victory. According to Uba Dan’arewa, it was Binani’s face and Shettima’s fingers.

He attempted to place Malam Nuhu Ribadu on the platform of front-runners in Tinubu’s camp by claiming that Malam Nuhu Ribadu was extremely close to Tinubu. However, it might be stated that his actions were motivated by worries that his employer might not be able to influence events when a skilled hand, such as the Vice President-elect, is present. He started to speculate that Kashim Shettima would eventually replace Tinubu just to lead to chaos in the national leadership but in that too they have failed.

When Shettima was selected as Tinubu’s running partner, Malam Nuhu Ribadu was there. Kashim Shettima may have been carrying his certificate of return as Senator for Borno Central in the red chamber if Ribadu had any bearing at all. But as fate is the mother of luck, the Ribadu camp’s foot troops would want to direct their resentment at the incoming president for making the decision to choose Shettima over their paid master.

In his audio recording, Uba Dan’arewa says that Kashim Shettima may depose Tinubu. Well, he gets off easy since there was never an occasion better than what sparked this uprising from the Ribadu camp. a manifestation of political will that is misdirected. With his article and audio tying Kashim Shettima to the contentious elections in Adamawa state and other accusations against Shettima, Uba Dan’arewa, who claimed to be an APC chieftain in Adamawa, is now hiding his face from Nigerians, who would want to ask him questions.

Malam Nuhu Ribadu’s unrestrained statements may be to blame for this political catastrophe. But the Ribadu camp was sending a message by stooping so low as to connect Kashim Shettima to Senator Aisha Binani’s purported statement during the brief drama between INEC’s REC and politicians in Adamawa state.

Naturally, I would have disregarded the recording sent to me regarding the player’s alleged misconduct, but doing nothing may be seen as supporting those in the political sphere who spread false information as we prepare to celebrate Nigeria’s rekindled optimism.

Alhaji Uba Dan’arewa failed to disguise his tracks and showed stupidity in every sentence he wrote. The audio also revealed the fear of some politicians, who may have grand plans to control powers from the north, but who are afraid that they won’t be able to cage the Tinubu administration due to Kashim Shettima’s strong leadership. As a result, they resort to blackmail and other forms of false accusations against reasonable people.

No Nigerian would ever tell Kashim Shettima and Bola Ahmed Tinubu how far they had come, as they are fully aware of. Tinubu and Shettima’s union has been remembered in history as a union based on self-assurance, trust, and destiny. It was of a trustworthy kind that had been examined and was still intact.

The respect on which this friendship was based may be attested by those who are familiar with the challenges that brought the two leaders together. For anybody to think such accusations coming from a figure like Uba Dan’arewa is near facts than fictions is therefore very absurd.

NDLEA Warns Skit Makers to Show Restraint, Responsibility, Decorum in Use of Paraphernalia of Law Enforcement Agencies

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has advised skit producers to show restraint, responsibility and decorum in the use of paraphernalia of law enforcement officers to avoid misconceptions and insinuations.

The advice came on the heels of a trending video where some men dressed in what looks like operational kits of the NDLEA were involved in what ridiculed the operational ethics of the anti-narcotics agency.

The spokesman of the agency, Femi Babafemi, in a statement on Tuesday said:
“We wishes to reiterate that a trending video of some persons wearing red jackets similar to the ones used by officers and men of the agency for operational purposes, operating in a minibus, is an old skit, which the agency had disclaimed a year old.”

Babafemi said: “The agency had in a well-publicized statement released on Saturday 21st May 2022 stated that it had established, following series of public enquiries, that the video with screenshot pictures attached to the statement is a skit produced by one Mathew C Eze who lives in the Lekki area of Lagos.”

He lamented that: “A year after, the video has returned to the social media space, a development that has led to several enquiries from concerned members of the public on the authenticity of the content of the video.”

He said: “We will like to reiterate again that the confusion the controversial video has created in the minds of members of the public underscores the need for some social media content producers to show restraint, responsibility and decorum in how they misuse paraphernalia of law enforcement officers to avoid misconceptions and insinuations.”

He warned that: “The agency will also like to remind those fond of this kind of indiscretion, especially the misuse of its official jackets to mislead and create false impressions, that such has consequences.”

The Lanting Forum on Chinese Modernization and the World was organized by the China Public Diplomacy Association and the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs, and was supported by the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government. Representatives of governments, think tanks and the media from nearly 80 countries participated in the Forum.

Also speaking at the Forum, China’s State Councilor and Foreign Minister Qin Gang, said: “Chinese modernization is the natural choice of China’s 100-year-long quest for development. Modernization for China has been a journey of hardship and perseverance, anguish and glory, honour and dreams. During modern times, countless patriots looked to the West for a formula of modernization to save the nation, but they all failed. It was not until the birth of the CPC in 1921 that China found the pillar and guidance for its modernization. It is under the CPC’s strong leadership that we have embarked on the great journey of independently building a modern country.

“We have turned China from an impoverished and backward land into the world’s second largest economy, top trader in goods, biggest holder of foreign exchange reserves, and biggest manufacturer. We have put in place the world’s largest compulsory education system, social security system, and medical and health system. China has realized, in a short span of several decades, industrialization that had taken developed countries several centuries. We have caught up with the times in great strides.”

He added that: “Chinese modernization is the natural requirement for promoting national rejuvenation on all fronts. As of the 18th CPC National Congress, under the strong leadership of the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core, the “acceleration button” was pressed in China’s modernization drive. The two major miracles — fast economic development and long-term social stability — continued. Absolute poverty was eradicated. A moderately prosperous society in all respects became a reality.

“With this, the First Centenary Goal was realized. The Chinese nation has achieved a great transformation from standing up and growing prosperous to becoming strong. National rejuvenation is now on an irreversible course. At the National People’s Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) sessions last month, General Secretary Xi Jinping was again unanimously elected President of the People’s Republic of China. It was a choice by history and by the people. With the conviction and responsibility of “serving the people selflessly”, President Xi Jinping is steering Chinese modernization forward and leading us in marching on the right path toward a better future.”

He noted that: “Chinese modernization is a natural outcome of the laws governing human development. Modernization is a common cause of all humanity. Although the West enjoyed the fruits of modernization ahead of others, history will not end there. As early as 140 years ago, Karl Marx envisioned crossing the Caudine Forks of capitalism, providing a solid theoretical basis for a path of modernization different from that of the West. Through the past 100 years and more, China has found by itself a path to modernization, and created a new form of human advancement. Ample facts have proved that there is no fixed model of, or single solution to, modernization. Any country can achieve modernization, as long as the path suits its conditions and answers the need of its people for development. On the contrary, mechanically copying ill-fitted foreign models is counter-productive, and may even lead to catastrophic consequences.”

Future is bleak under APC’s Tinubu as president, says Funkekeme Solomon *Says Oborevwori is coming equipped with requisite skills in governance

Nigerians have been asked to brace up for a bleak future as the coming of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, president-elect, will not change the fortunes of the people. Rather the lies, nepotism and deceit that characterized outing going President Muhammadu Buhari will continue.
Funkekeme Solomon, Senior Political Adviser to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, stated this while speaking on Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS) Television.
Noting that the same set of people that chaperoned President Muhammadu Buhari and drove his agenda that have left divided than before are the same persons that now surround Tinubu, Solomon said the President-elect shares in the lies and deceit that characterized Buhari’s nearly eight years in power.
“The All Progressives Congress (APC) on which Tinubu rode to power is an amalgam of desperate power seekers driven entirely by their to loot the national treasury and maintain a stranglehold on the levers of power without any thought to better the lot of the people”, he said.

But he had cheery news for the people of Delta State. He said that in Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, there is a governor-elect with a deep passion to better the lot of people.
“In Sheriff Oborevwori, Delta has a man coming prepared to take the state on a great leap forward. He was a councilor in Okpe, a community leader in Osubi and Speaker of the State House of Assembly for the past six years. He knows the extent of achievements of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and the areas to follow up on. He has never been alienated from the people, he grew up in their midst and he will hit the ground running”, Solomon stated.
Noting that the representation of women in elected positions decreased after the 2023 elections at all levels, he said Oborevwori will take affirmative actions to more women hold greater positions of authority.
On defection of some Delta politicians from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in others days before the gubernatorial election, the Senior Political Adviser said it was indecorous and naive of the politicians. “Politics requires integrity and loyalty on the part of all stakeholders. They were not strategic in their thinking. But the people knew better”, Solomon said.
He advocated a fundamental review of the operations of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and its parent ministry, the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs. “Right now, those running the NDDC panders more to the interests of politicians in Abuja than attending to the demands of the Niger Delta people. By now, we ought to have a university built and funded by NDDC. The focus on just building roads, most of which are hardly completed, is wrong. The agency should be supporting businesses of the legion of entrepreneurial young men and women from the region. Special attention should be paid to equipping them for the numerous opportunities in the oil and gas industry. Concentrating on roads is a pedestrian approach to addressing the developmental challenges in the region”, he said.

Delta gets Special Economic Zone license

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta, on Wednesday affirmed that the state was ready to partner investors in its vast oil and gas deposits as the country grappled with economic turnaround.

The governor made this known while receiving Delta Special Economic Zone license from Federal Government through Nigerian Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA), in Abuja.

He said that his administration had provided enabling environment, including peace and security, for businesses to thrive, and assured the sustenance of development in the state.

Okowa expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for the special license, and also assured that the state government was prepared to synergise with NEPZA, corporate organizations and groups to achieve the essence of the license.

He commended the management of NEPZA for the support and encouragement toward the realization of the state’s desire to have its resources properly harnessed.

He disclosed that availability of four seaports and two airports, in addition to necessary infrastructure, including good roads network, was a great impetus for businesses to flourish in the state.

In his remarks, Minister of Investment, Commerce and industry, Chief Niyi Adebayo, pledged Federal Government’s support to the development of the special economic zone in Delta.

Adebayo, who was represented by a Deputy Director in the ministry, Mr S.A. Jaja, said that operation of the economic zone would have multiplier-effect on Delta’s and national economy.

Earlier, the Chairman, Steering Committee for Establishment of Delta Special Economic Zone, Mr Festus Agas, had traced the track led to the presentation of the operating license to the state, and commended Governor Okowa for the effort.

Agas, who is Chief of Staff to Okowa, lauded the Federal Government for discerning the potential in Delta and approving the license.

He also commended NEPZA for the collaboration in seeing the “project” through, and sued for sustenance of the synergy.

Setting agenda for the new Sheriff in Delta (1)

-By Austin Ogwuda:

Delta State, created in l991, known as the ‘Big Heart’ prides itself as not only one of the major oil producing States in the country but as a reservoir of human resources in high caliber.

Mention men and women of great intellectual capacity, the financial moguls, key players in the banking industry, the media industry, the academia, name it, Delta is not lacking.

But what is lacking, is probably, whether the actual development is commensurate with the quantum of the trillions of naira that came in since the State came into existence.

However, the quantification of income vis-a-vis the expenditure is not the subject of this piece. But take note that well meaning Deltans both home and abroad are entitled to ask this very question. It is their inalienable right.

The only reason why such question is not asked or is being whispered is simply due to political jingoism whereby pulling wools over the faces of the sophisticated Deltans, I earlier described in the intro becomes the other of the day instead of laying the cards on the table.

Even the Fourth Estate of the Realm whose responsibility it is to ask critical questions, interrogate issues with facts and figures, some of us have fallen short of this responsibility and rather choose to cry more than the bereaved in some circumstances or close one eye instead.

Let me focus on the subject matter: that is agenda setting for the next governor come May 29.

Yes, the Governor-elect, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, by May 29 will be sworn in while the Election tribunal continues to hear petitions filed before it challenging the outcome of the governorship polls in the State.

Whether the outgoing government of Senator Arthur Okowa performed creditably or optimally is also not the subject for this discussion.
Rather, my concern is how to move forward.

….Need to drive Oborevwori bus into the system

Most times when a reporter who is not partisan puts pen on paper on a critical issue, he is buffeted, name calling but for me I don’t care a hoot provided one is unbiased, professional and with sense of responsibility calls a spade a spade.

Government is continu, it is said.
Therefore, as a Deltan, I am humbly asking the in coming administration to consider revisiting the mass transit program introduced during Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan’s era.

I recall during the electioneering campaign the APC candidate and Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo Agege alluded to the fact that Delta State has turned into a dumping ground for ‘keke’.

I can recall vividly that the former governor Uduaghan introduced the keke when he banned the operation of commercial motorcyclists known as okada.
In addition, he also introduced macapolo buses, otherwise known as Uduaghan bus.
These buses were plying Asaba to Okpanam; Asaba to Ibusa, Ogwashi Uku; Asaba to Anwai etc in addition to operation of commercial tricycle aka Keke.

The then Transport Commissioner, under that administration Hon Ben Ibeakpa was up and doing ensuring synergy in the operation of the mass transit system which turned out to be successful but not without some hitches though. The fare was affordable for the teeming masses.

I can also recall that some civil servants were commuting from Ogwashi Uku to Asaba and back from Mondays through Fridays.

The re-introduction of Uduaghan bus now to be christened Oborevwori bus is key.
Although Asaba is flooded with keke, the buses are more comfortable especially during the raining season, fast approaching.

The keke operators have since been banned from using tarpaulin to shield the rain because of reported cases of all sorts of abuse, ranging from robbery, rape, kidnap and other heinous crimes under the tarpaulin cover.
The re-introduction definitely shouldn’t be limited to Asaba the state capital but to other urban towns like Warri, Agbor, Kwale, Sapele etc.

The idea of jettisoning programs and projects of previous administrations, not only in
Delta State but across the country, to my personal opinion, is not the best.

Dabiri-Erewa Laments Situation in Sudan As Responsible for Non Evacuation of Nigerians

The Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa has said the situation in Sudan was responsible for the inability to evacuate Nigerians trapped in the country presently engulfed in crisis.

Dabiri-Erewa, in a statement on Friday by Gabriel Odu of the Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit of the Commission, said while the Nigerian Mission in Sudan and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), have put in place arrangements to evacuate Nigerian students and other Nigerian citizens stranded in Sudan, the tensed situation makes it gravely risky and impossible for any flights at this point in time.

She noted that “aircrafts parked at the airport in the country were burnt yesterday morning.”

Dabiri-Erewa also noted that humanitarian groups are seeking ways of getting food, water and medicals across to people.

She therefore appealed to the fighting parties to consider the Juba Peace Agreement enunciated by Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), as fundamental mechanism for the restoration of peace and tranquility in the country.
