AFGHANISTAN: THE RETURN OF THE TALIBAN

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –By Austen AKHAGBEME:

IT was just the right time for the embattled Afghan President, Ashraf Ghani to disappear; with his tail tucked between his legs, he did without looking back.

The cover the American government gave him and his fading governmental structure was gradually eroding with the announcement of the final withdrawal of troops from the Afghan soil come August 31st.

The 20 years of America’s occupation was becoming both a moral and financial burden to America, hence the former Republican President Donald J Trump fixed a terminal date for a final withdrawal of troops of which President Biden was determined to keep.

One wonder why President Ghani didn’t see this coming, especially against the backdrop of the negotiation the American government had with the officials of the Taliban in Qatar the previous week.

In the meeting, the Americans had warned sternly that any action by the rampaging Taliban that appears to put US personnel in harm’s way will be met with a commensurate “strong US military response”.

Perhaps, this explains the calm and cool nature (with a more moderate face) of the Taliban, this time around such that an interim, transitional administration arrangement, likely to be headed by a former interior minister and a US-based scholar, Ali Ahmad Jalili, is being taunted by a power-hungry bunch like the Taliban.

The Americans didn’t want to take any chances, which is why President Biden ordered the immediate redeployment of about 5000 troops to ensure a peaceful evacuation of citizens and the orderly drawdown of military personnel a day before Kabul fell.

Again, the fall of the big Eastern city of Jalalabad, without any form of resistance from government forces, was a sure pointer that the game was up.

The big question now is whether or not the helpless citizens will enjoy better governance from a potentially authoritarian rule of the Taliban. We only hope and pray that this time around, their heart will be as white and pure as the Taliban flag.

THE Nigeria Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has commended the decision of the Federal High Court, Abuja which ruled in favour of six women harassed and abused during raids in the capital city by Environmental Protection Board (AEPB).

Abuja Environmental Protection Board, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps and Inspector Thomas Nzemekwe popularly called Yellow were dragged before the Justice Evelyn Maha’s Federal High Court in Abuja by a legal team led by Sterling Law Centre over allegation of denying six women their fundamental human rights.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja, the Secretary of NHRC, Tony Ojukwu who was represented by a Director in the Commission, Harry Obe said the verdict of the court was landmark in the history of human rights struggle in the nation.

He said that the case will go a long way to reinforcing the rights and confidence of women in the country.

He said: “The judgment is significant as it asserts the human rights of every person against gender-based violence, especially by state actors, which is a persisting, well-documented fact. The judgment regarding the discriminatory arrest of people based on their gender, particularly the arrest of women in the streets and other places, becomes a reference point for protecting women’s rights now and in the future.”

According to Ojukwu, “History has been made in Abuja in the landmark court judgments on the notorious raids of women and girls in the streets of Abuja by the Abuja Environmental Protection Board and other law enforcement agents.”

As a graduate of Agricultural Extension and Management from the Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro (2013), he was one of the best Agricultural Science graduates whose names were compiled from state-owned higher institutions and enrolled in YAGEP in fulfilment of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s campaign promise.

Three years after establishment, Simon’s passion for fish farming remained unwavering. He has grown his business, standing tall among his counterparts. He has diversified into fish processing, stock supplies, and offers consultancy and training services to up-coming fish farmers. He speaks on his journey so far in Fish Production.

“I was suddenly invited for interview by the Delta State Job and Wealth Creation Bureau, Asaba after four years of underemployment. This was the turning point in my life. After the compulsory completion of a three months internship/training which added another feather to my cap, I was invited to YAGEP Fish Farm Cluster at Egbokodo-Itsekiri for the allotment of two fish ponds with 2,000 post fingerlings with sufficient fish feed to grow them to table size (1kg). “After harvest, I was able to purchase 100ft x 50ft piece of land in that same fish farm cluster for expansion purposes with five fish ponds dug on it. Presently I have six stocked fish ponds with 6,400 fish. There was a time I had about 10,000 fishes which I sold off. I have four pumping machines and I am able to care for my family and to pay my rent when due. I also got married from the proceeds from my farm.

“I also engage in the following services- brood stock of fish from fingerlings, post-juvenile to table size (1kg); fish processing (smoking and baking); agent service; consultation and organize seminars and workshops within and outside the state.

“Despite the challenges of inadequate funds, I look forward to practising integrated agriculture. In the next 10 years, I want to be among the first 20 successful fish farmers in this country. My candid advice to my fellow STEPreneurs and YAGEPreneurs is to dream big, be committed, disciplined and be driven to succeed.”

DIVORCE STATEMENT: Grassroots Politician Faults Ex-Attorney General

THE alleged decision of a former Attorney General in one of the Nigerian states to use the term “disgruntled politicians” in his press statement announcing his divorce from his wife has angered some politicians in the state.

In a press release issued on Monday, August 9, 2021, allegedly announcing his decision to end his marriage, the former Attorney General had referenced what he said was a rumour that a woman was pregnant with his baby.

According to him, “the allegation is totally false and a satanic agenda to destroy his hard-earned reputation as no person is pregnant for him or has a child for him as falsely alleged by a desperate group of disgruntled politicians and enemies”.

Reacting to the derogatory statement, a grassroots mobilizer and member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ukwuani Local Government Area, Hon Gregory Edirin, said while the former Attorney General’s wife seemed to have been silent on the press statement, those he referred to as “disgruntled politicians” had taken exception to that.

Hon Edirin said it was unfortunate that the former Attorney General chose to refer to some politicians as disgruntled, stressing that those he alleged were linked to the said rumour were persons who had made their names in politics, governance and business.

He maintained that it was laughable that the former Attorney General talked about his ‘hard earned reputation’ in the press statement when he had none, pointing out that his past relationships and social life had nothing particularly good to talk about.

The grassroots mobilizer noted that it took the efforts of PDP leaders in the former AG’s LGA and the goodwill of his wife to make him two – time Commissioner, but regretted that he had negatively impacted PDP in his area, causing disunity among party members and leaders, which had led to some party faithful defecting to other political parties.

While saying that the former Attorney General was a questionable character, Hon Edirin accused him of inconsistency and deceit, explaining that his claim that he divorced his wife since July last year was not true because the woman accompanied him to Abuja in December 2020 for his SAN investiture.

Oleh Diocese Of Anglican Communion Holds 8th Synod In Delta, Advocates For Restructuring Of Nigeria

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –From Michael J. EKOKORUWE:

THE Bishop of the Anglican Communion, Oleh Diocese, Rt. Revd. John U. Aruakpor has advocated for the restructuring of Nigeria to reflect true federalism where the states will be in control of their resources to remit thirty percent of their income to the federal government, and reiterated the church support to the Delta State Governor, Dr.Ifeanyi Okowa to finish strong.

Aruakpor made the call while delivering the Bishop Charge on the theme “Understanding the Times, Signs and Seasons Speak”, during the 1st Session of the 8th Synod held at the weekend, at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, Owhelogbo, Isoko North local government area of Delta State. He noted that it is disheartening to contribute to the coffers of a country that does not recognize contributors credible enough to hold sensitive positions.

The Bishop while speaking on the state of the nation, condemned the banes of insecurity, nepotist tendencies of the current regime, issues of open grazing/threat by killer herdsmen, bill to control Nigeria Waterways and their banks, the borrowing trend of the Federal Government, ugly trend of ‘yahoo yahoo’ and the general hardship in the land, adding that it shows the federal government is insensitive to the plight of the affected people, especially the Niger Delta and urged representatives from the south not to betray the people they are represents.

Bishop Aruakpor called on the Federal government to reconsider the future of the common man and review the policies that have brought the untold hardship to the people.

He assured that the church stands out as a credible partner in the day to day running of the affairs of the society, and called on the state government to increase it’s partnership with the church in the area of education, health, agriculture and human capital development; adding that “partnering and committing responsibilities to the church will no doubt yield credible result”.

Earlier, the Guest Lecturer at the Synod, High Chief Eta Enahoro, the Iyasere of Oyede Kingdom, while delivering the lecture titled “Nigeria Can Be Fixed and Developed, How? ” asserted that Nigeria is replete with situations of general despondence in relation to socio-economic, technological and political developments, occasioned by ineffective deployment of resources, both human and material, to steer itself out of the crises of slow growth and economic problems.

The Guest Lecturer who described the Nigerian true story as “spectacularly morbid if not sordid when diagnosed”, stated that the panacea would be through collective resolve for unfettered access to political participation, political sanity with well intended motivations and transmission of election results for development to be entrenched.

The business mogul who traced the bane of development to corruption at all spheres of the economy, advocated death penalty for corrupt officials as the only fear of death penalty that will stop corruption.

He noted that the challenges could not be solved not until every person takes responsibility beyond relying on the government alone, adding that “as wholesome and as odorous our situation presents itself, “let me sincerely say with the courage of Caleb and Joshua that there is hope”.

On how Nigeria and Isoko nation as an integral part of Nigeria can escape from the current underdevelopment problems, Enahoro identified the need for transformational leaders with development oriented leadership; free, fair and credible elections that will entrench democracy and not plutocracy that will sanitize the political arena with well-intended reforms and offer good governance as well as fight against corruption as ‘leaders over the years have been fantastically corrupt’.

Eta averred that the nation should embrace inclusive and shared growth as the refusal of political leaders to share the benefits of growth with the underclass has been a problem in the nation.

He also advocated for an urgent revolution of the education and healthy sector for scientific and technological breakthrough that will result from rigorous research efforts while providing conducive atmosphere and climates for productive activities that will enable citizens exploit their environment and resources for their material existence, livelihoods and income.

He stated that “we may have been socially dismembered, politically frustrated, economically shattered, religiously loosing faith and psychologically depressed, but a reorientation of attitudes and reenactment of our cherished values of hard work and entrepreneurship laced with affective commitment to nation building is a recipe for the new Nigeria that is envisioned.

For his part, the chairman of the Bishops Charge at the Synod and the President-General of Isoko Development Union (IDU), Professor Chris Akpotu, noted that the challenges of Nigeria have been discussed in different platforms and fora, and there seemed to be no headway and asserted that “Nigeria is demonically afflicted”.

Professor Akpotu noted that the right platform for deliverance is the church, noting that if the church takes the central stage, there will be hope in the future.

The IDU President further stated that the right approach to the underdevelopment challenges is attitudinal change and a knowledge driven economy which could in turn be driven by research.

Highlights of the Ceremony was the presentation of plaques to selected individuals both living and dead who have contributed to the propagation of the gospel in the area.

Present at the Bishop Charge was Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, represented by his Special Adviser on Religious Matters, Senior Apostle Sylvanus Okorete, Most Revd Markus Ibrahim, who was the Guest Preacher, Chief Iduh Amadhe, former IDU President General, former SSG, Sir Simeon Efenudu and Comrade Ovuzorie Macaulay.

Others are Bishops from the Bendel Ecclesiastical Province led by the Archbishop Most Revd. Cyril Udutemu and Most Revd. Victor Muoghere, retired Bishop of the Ughelli Diocese among others.

US Blockade, COVID-19 Pandemic Cause Us Loss Of $3.6 Bn In 2020 -Cuba Cries Out

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –From Mike SOGBOLO:

CUBA has cried that United States blockade against her and the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic have caused a loss of about $3.6 billion between April and December, 2020 alone.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Thursday on the effect of American blockade on Cuba economy and the subsequent hardship on the civilian populace which led to recent protest in the North American country, Cuban Ambassador to Nigeria, Clara Pulido also revealed that the total loss by her country from April 2019 to December 2020 stands at over $9.2 billion.

She lamented that: “The blockade that was already damaging our economy was increased by Donald Trump administration with 243 additional measures to make the already complex situation facing the country even more difficult.”

She decried that: “Some of these measures were even taken during the pandemic, which demonstrates the criminal and inhuman character of this regime of unilateral sanctions against Cuba.”

She said these restrictions have magnified the many challenges imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic and multiply its devastating socioeconomic, health-related and financial impacts and have repeatedly hampered the arrival of humanitarian aid in the country, a case better described as “immoral, unjustifiable and criminal.”

She said that Cuban economy which heavily depends on tourism, one of the sectors most affected by the pandemic all over the world, and on the exports of products less consume in times like this, has been hit hard.

Pulido, while lamenting that US government has lined up other sanctions, she unilaterally sets against Cuba, said all these factors have impacted negatively on the capacity of Cuba to generate resources, to have access to finance and to trade freely and without obstacles and has been causing shortages in the country with shortages of food, of medicines, raw materials, including oil, and inputs needed by the economic and productive processes, which contribute both to exports and to the supplies for the people.

She said the arrival of the Delta strain of COVID-19, which is more aggressive and contagious strains, has added a new complication to an already complex situation for the management of the pandemic.

She noted that Cuba has been facing the pandemic with her reserve, insisting that the nation is bleeding,

On the recent uprising in the country, Pulido said the government has accepted that there are dissatisfactions in the country and working at alleviating harsh conditions.

She however said “it has become clear that these problems, which can occur in any country, were used to encourage riots against the constitutional order in the country, many of which exhibited unprecedented violence, disqualifying them as pacific demonstrations.”

She added her voice to the call by many on President Joe Biden to use his executive powers to modify the implementation of the blockade, and its humanitarian and economic impact.

-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –From Mike SOGBOLO:

BORNO State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum and his predecessor, Senator Kashim Shettima have distanced themselves from embattled “Supercop” Abba Kyari, insisting that they have not met with him recently.

A posting on the Facebook of Abba Kyari, who hails from Borno State, has videos and photo splashes of him with some prominent politicians in the state among them the two respected indigenes of the state, Zulum and Shettima with the writing: “Today With my elder brothers his Excellency Governor Zulum of Borno State, Former Governor Kashim Shettima and Senator Habu Kyari.”

But in a reaction to the Facebook posting, both Zulum and Shettima denied recently meeting with Abba Kyari, who was few days ago suspended from the Nigeria Police for his indictment in a fraud case at an American court alongside Ramon Olorunwa Abbas, also known as Ray Hushpuppi now standing trial.

A statement by the spokesman to the governor, Mallam Isa Gusau on Wednesday said both Zulum and Shettima never even know the residence of the embattled deputy commissioner of police, talk less of making an appearance.

Gusau said he resorted to issuing the clarification since Abba Kyari who promised issuing the clarification himself did not do so, more than four hours after making the promise to him.

Gusau alleged that the said video in circulation was recorded by some associates of Abba Kyari at the residence of Senator Kashim Shettima in Abuja on June 30, 2021, when Abba Kyari paid an empathy visit to Shettima following mischievous circulation of rumours that the Senator had died in the UK.

He said the embattled police officer had himself shared the same video on his verified facebook wall on June 30, shortly after he visited Shettima.

He added that Kyari who hails from Borno State and in Shettima’s constituency visited the former Governor to wish him well like many others had visited the Senator during the time.

Gusau released a video of some sympathizers who had also visited the Senator the same period, which showed the senator receiving them in his house, the same place being described as Abba Kyari’s house.

Gusau said people need to take note of the TV behind Zulum and Abba Kyari with a CNN breaking news on the release of American Comedian actor, Bill Cosby, which, as can be verified by anyone online, happened on June 30, 2021.

The spokesman however called on Abba Kyari to issue a similar clarification as he had promised when he called his attention to the misrepresentation given the fact it was Kyari himself who took that video and released it on his Facebook page on June 30, 2021.

He pleaded that Nigerians should visit: https://www.facebook.com/100002701927599/posts/3592594017507294/?d=n, to see the video on June 30, 2021 and compare with the same video in circulation, claiming Zulum and Shettima had visited Kyari.

Delta Govt Approves N425bn “Indicative budget” For 2022

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA)  –From Editor’s DESK:

DELTA Government has approved an “indicative budget” of N425 billion for 2022.

The reconstituted State Executive Council approved the budget at its maiden meeting presided by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa in Asaba on Friday.

Briefing newsmen on the outcome of the meeting, the Commissioner for Economic Planning, Dr Barry Gbe, said that the council approved the proposal after due consideration of the Medium Term Expenditure Framework and the Fiscal Strategy Paper (MTEF and FSP) in line with the Fiscal Responsibility Law 2020.

Gbe stated that his ministry had proposed a budget of N388 billion for the period but that the figure was jerked up by the council to accommodate other matters not envisaged earlier.

According to him, after deliberations, debates and a deeper look into what 2022 should look like, in its wisdom, the State Executive Council increased the N388 billion that was recommended to N425 billion.

“Gbe, however, disclosed that the N425 budget was “indicative”, saying “it is not full and final.

“So, we will be going to the House of Assembly with an indicative figure of N425 billion as a total budget size for 2022.

“The micro economic indicators that informed the indicative 2022 budget was a deliberate adoption of the Federal Government MTEF and FSP where they planned crude oil to be sold at 57 dollars per barrel in 2022, with daily production of oil at 1.88 million barrels and exchange rate of N410 to the dollar.

“These are the indicative figures that made up the micro economic framework of the Federal Government and that is what we also used in our projections.

“However, the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) which for 2021 half year was put at N35 billion is to be scaled up through what we are trying to put in the informal sector so that we can become a little ambitious and then increase it from the N65 billion plus of 2021 to doing N75 billion in 2022.

“We also try to scale down what we called net financing which is to say that we don’t need to borrow much to increase the revenue side of our 2022 budget. However, in our intention to finish strong, we felt that there would be need to also maintain some figures around net financing.

“So, the revenue side of the budget for 2022 will be adequately funded through the statutory allocation, the IGR of the state, grants that we expect from donor agencies and multilateral agencies like the World Bank, UNESCO, UNICEF and some others that might likely come up,” he added.

The commissioner stated that the executive council also projected that the capital expenditure side shoud be higher than the recurrent expenditure side of the budget.

According to him, the state government will be doing a 56/44 ratio distribution between capital and recurrent expenditures to enable it finish ongoing capital projects in 2022.

In his contribution, the Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, disclosed that the council approved the construction of Amoro Street which is about 756 meters in Enerhen in Uvwie Local Government Area.

He said that Osamor Street in Ika North-East and Ozu/Onyia/Ogbe streets in Ekuku-Agbor in Ika South and the Okpolo/Owien Road in Isoko South were also approved for construction.

Aniagwu stated that a high-powered committee headed by the Deputy Governor had been set up to look into issues of sanitation in the state, adding that the committee was expected to come up with recommendations on certain steps to be taken to ensure the maintenance of a more healthy environment.

“A memo was also brought forward by the Warri/Uvwie and Environs Development Agency on the account of the amount of storm water drainage that is being constructed by the agency for the purpose of increasing the spate of work and also including certain aspects of phase lll and phase lV.

“You will recall that we have started the construction of the project in phase l and phase ll but in the course of the progress on that work, it was discovered that there is need to address certain areas in phases lll and lV because the return of the rains has shown that if those areas were not done, it will affect what is being done in phase l and phase ll. So, that addendum was brought forward for approval by the council.

“The EXCO approved the UTM Offshore Limited for Delta and that is for us to invest in floating liquified natural gas project and EXCO approved that because it is believed that this investment will not only protect our future, but it is an investment that will, to a very large extent, give us opportunities to create more jobs for our people.

“This is an investment that the private sector is very much involved in and we are quite optimistic that, given the enormous natural gas in our state, it is something that is worth investing,” he said.

The commissioner pointed out that approval for the commencement of procurement of medical equipment at the Advanced Diagnostic Centre as well as the Mother and Child Centre in Owa-Alero was also given to help advance health care delivery system in the state.

He also said that the appointment of the Pere of Isaba, Theophilus Nderekeme, was approved, adding that the approval took effect from December, 2021, when he was installed by the traditional institutions in Isaba in Warri South West Local.

On housing development, the Commissioner for Housing, Chief Festus Ochonogor, said that the council approved the commencement of Delta State Social Housing Development Programme, a pilot scheme targeted at providing accessible and affordable houses for the low and medium income households in the state.

Ochonogor disclosed that the pilot scheme would commence in three locations at Owa-Oyibu, Kwale and Ozoro, and that the Ministry of Lands had been directed by EXCO to discuss with communities in Delta Central with a view to getting unencumbered land that would enable his ministry to start the programme.

“We are also intensifying efforts in the supervision of projects, particularly with respect to three newly-established universities in the state, to enable them start seamless academic activities,” he added.

Protests May Rock Kashmir Over Alleged Election Rigging

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –From Mike Sogbolo with Agency REPORTS:

TROUBLE is brewing in Pakistan occupied Kashmir as the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has decided to hold protests against Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party for allegedly rigging the recently-held elections in the area.

According to agency reports, the PML-N secretary general Ahsan Iqbal said that in the first phase the party’s candidates would hold protest rallies in their respective constituencies in Pakistan occupied Kashmir after which the party leadership would decide further strategy, Dawn reported.

Iqbal said the outcome of the results of the PoK polls and the by-election in Sialkot had proved the PML-N’s viewpoint that the present government of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) was not a true representative of the people and it had been imposed through coercion and rigging.

According to the report, Imran Khan’s PTI has won the majority by bagging 25 seats in the so-called elections.

The report said the two recent elections had once again exposed the hollowness of the democratic setup in the country, he said, adding that Imran Khan was the central character of the present “democratic drama”.

It was reported that open revolt was witnessed in the occupied region after Imran Khan’s Pakistan Teheek-e-Insaaf (PTI) party won 25 seats while the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) came second with 11 seats and the incumbent Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) secured just six seats.

According to the report, the people were upset because of major interference by the PTI government in the election process of PoK in which clashes between the opposition parties were also reported.

The PoK assembly has a total of 53 members but only 45 are directly elected.
Meanwhile, India has termed elections in Pakistan occupied Kashmir as a cosmetic exercise to camouflage illegal occupation and has lodged a protest with Pakistani authorities.

India has asked Pakistan to vacate the territory illegally occupied by it.

MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said at the regular media briefing on Thursday that the exercise of so-called elections has been protested and rejected by the local people.

“Let me make it very clear. The so-called elections in Indian territory under illegal occupation of Pakistan are nothing but an attempt by Pakistan to camouflage its illegal occupation and the material changes undertaken by it in these territories,” he said.

War Is Reaction To Jeopardised Rights -Sierra Leonean Judge

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –From Mike SOGBOLO:

A Sierra Leonean Judge, Justice Tonia Barnett has said war is a reaction to jeopardised rights, even as she stated that it is only those that have not witnessed war that call for it.

Barnett, who was in Nigeria at the weekend to seek the support of Ambassadors from the West African subregion to land a sit at the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, said: “If the citizens’ rights are being jeopardised, it allowed for uprising and a peaceful society will not be enhanced.”

The Justice, who addressed ECOWAS ambassadors at Transcorp Hilton, Abuja said: “As Africans we want a peaceful society, we have cried too much. Those who have not experienced war would want war.”

Barnett while recounting her story which highlighted a tale of a woman whose teenage life was robbed by rebel incursion in Sierra Leone, said: “My upbringing made me strong and has given me an opportunity to be here tonight.”

She said her career trajectory was shaped by an event she witnessed as a teenager when a man was hacked down during the Sierra Leonean Civil War on a mere allegation without being tried, “I felt never should a man or woman suffer such faith.”

She claimed that: “My nomination by my President Julius Bio has garnered support from the Judiciary in Sierra Leone and Key Civil Society Organisations including the Human Rights Organisation.”

She said that being a judge who has never been investigated and whose morality has never been questioned, she had met the qualification criteria for the job as stipulated by article 31 of the Charter of African Human and Peoples Rights.

She said her work as a legal practitioner and judge over the years, working mainly to protect and promote human rights has also lent credence to her work experience as a precondition.

She said: “Before I was appointed Judge, I was a Magistrate for 11 years, hearing and determining sexual abuse cases, cruelty to children.

“As a judge of the High Court, I hear and determine cases that border on human rights. Cases like the right to family life, rights of association and right to belong to political parties.

“These are rights that border on the African Charter and human rights, treaties and conventions.”

She disclosed that: “Presently in Sierra Leone, the Chief Justice is pushing very hard to ensure that access to Justice is a right and must be enhanced and enjoyed by every citizens.

“We hold view that it is not only fair hearing, but you must have the right to make a complaint and be heard by a competent court.”

Justice Barnett, who did her LLM in Women and Children Affairs, added that in her work she always upheld treaties and conventions which her country had signed and ratified.

The AU nominee recalled that her passion for human rights and fair hearing was kindled during the war when she saw a man hacked to death over an accusation even without hearing from him.

She explained that: “Article for of the Charter on African Human And Peoples Right stipulates that the rights of man must be enhanced and that is also entailed in our constitution.

“During the campaign for the abolition of the death penalty, my position was – because death is irreversible and wrongful conviction can be detrimental, I said that we should reconsider death penalty.

“To every right, there must be a corresponding responsibility. I want to enjoy my freedom of expression but I must not defame, with that in mind and all citizens living up to that, I think we would have a peaceful society.

“So as a candidate for the position, what I bring is vitality. We need to go down, we need to get up from the chairs and walk. We need to canvass with state parties to understand that human right issues is not just a one party issue, it is everybody’s issue.

“If the citizens’ rights are being jeopardised, it allowed for uprising and a peaceful society will not be enhanced. As Africans we want a peaceful society, we have cried too much. Those who have not experienced war would want war.”

“Should I remain in the chair or should I go down to the slums to propagate what human rights is, and I think this platform, if I am given the opportunity, will be the best opportunity for me to serve. It would be fulfilling because it has been my life, my dream and a dream come true.”

ABBA KYARI: A FLY IN THE OINTMENT?

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –By Austen AKHAGBEME:

TAFA Balogun was a heavily built, haughty and hawkish cop who once traverse the length and breadth of our policing world. He was a former Inspector General of Police, who fell from office shamefully, with a heavy thud commensurate with his office and his human physique. He was accused of embezzlement and misappropriation of funds. It was a great fall.

Another super cop, a crime-buster, a multiple award winner, a celebrated performer and the highly respected DCP Abba Kyari, is recently been alleged, by the FBI, to have been wrongfully associated with a convicted cybercriminal, Hushpuppi. It was a shocking and unbelievable story to many, until Kyari’s hastened but wobbling response via his Facebook page.

There is no disputing the fact that Kyari has become the icon of the ideal policeman the nation yearns for. A goal-getter and an inspiration to so many young people everywhere. To criminals and men of questionable dispositions, the fear of Abba Kyari is the beginning of wisdom. Little wonder that his alleged complicity with Hushpuppi, by the FBI, was bad news to every ear.

While it might yet be too early to predict the fate of this super cop against the weighty allegation staring at him in the face, his hastened and ill-advised Facebook response seems to give the game away albeit, cheaply.

Abba Kyari told the world how that Hushpuppi called him about a certain person who was threatening his life. Having investigated and arrested the accused, he found out that Hushppupi lied and that it was a mere feud between two estranged friends. Now, instead of Kyari to go for Hushpuppi who has committed perjury by lying and misinforming law enforcement agents, he would rather become a middle man, through which Hushpuppi purchased his admired native attire.

This defence, truly, didn’t add up. It makes his numerous admirers tremble as the day goes by. There is truly a stinky fly in this ointment. May God Himself, help Abba Kyari.
