The bank which have been dealing with series of management high-handedness and ill-treatment of staff by branch managers, may soon engage in legal battle with one of its staff, Mrs. Confidence Nwabuokei, for character assassination, unlawful detention, degrading and inhuman treatment.

Some management staff in Access Bank Plc branch 025, Asaba, Delta State, including the South-East II zonal head, Mr. Ifeanyi Onwukwe, branch manager, Mrs. Oluchi Nwabuikwu and compliant officer, Mr. Edward Nnaji, were allegedly involved in the harassment, intimidation and tarnishing of staff image and personality for no just cause.

In a petition addressed to the bank’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Herbert Wigwe and signed by A.N. Nwiba on behalf of The Water-Tight Attorneys and made available to Blank NEWS Online, the untoward action of the alleged management staff of Access Bank Plc has caused great life threatening health challenges, loss of goodwill on the said staff.

After failure to turn up with investigation/findings/report as promised by management and as a result of the inhuman treatment meted on her and subsequent transfer to branch 373, Onitsha, Anambra state, including threat calls and messages, Mrs. Confidence Nwabuokei eventually threw in the towel and resigned from the services of Access Bank Plc.

The petition dated 23rd July 2021 read in parts as follows:
“Thus, the gist of the matter is that on the 26th day of February 2021, a day after the birthday of Oluchi Nwabuikwu, she informed the Access Bank staff of branch 025 that she misplaced her car keys in her office.

“However, on the 12th day of April 2021, a car key was discovered on the floor in the bank which Oluchi Nwabuikwu later confirmed was her own.

“Surprisingly, on the 15th day of April 2021 at about 11:00 am, Mrs. Confidence Nwabuokei, who earlier upon resumption in the morning hours saw a bunch of keys on the floor and informed her colleagues was falsely accused of having stolen the keys and subsequently detained from 11:00 am to 04:00 pm.

“Our client was falsely accused, threatened, assaulted which adversely affected our client’s health and she was unlawfully detained inside the bank against her wish while she was still a support staff in Access Bank Plc.

“Our client now suffers from Pneumonia, severe chest pains and heart enlargement…she has been on several medications and in and out of hospitals ever since, due to the amount of exposure to the air conditioner, inhuman and degrading treatment while in illegal detention in Edward Nnaji’s office.

In an interview, Mrs. Confidence Nwabuokei, who was visibly in great pain and tears confirmed that she was detained for over five hours in the office of one Mr. Edward Nnaji at the Access Bank Plc branch 025, Asaba, and later locked up with a male from 11:00 am to 04:00 pm despite her plea of innocence and her health conditions at that time, over an alleged misplaced but found car keys belonging to her branch manager, Oluchi Nwabuikwu.

She however, regained freedom after she quickly made a call to her husband, Mr. Justice Nwabuokei Esq., who swiftly came to her rescue while she was still being detained within the bank premises.

When separate calls were put through to Access Bank Plc zonal head South-East II, Mr. Ifeanyi Onwukwe, he responded that: “I don’t talk to journalists,’ while the Access Bank Plc branch 025 manager, Mrs. Oluchi Nwabuikwu said “I’m aware and I can hear you but please call my head office about that matter.’

Meanwhile, the ailing Mrs. Confidence Nwabuokei, has formally reported the matter to the police because of her legitimate, human rights that have been encroached upon through unlawful detention, assault and threat to life.

The Strategy identified drivers of deforestation and forest degradation, analysed existing and proposed policies and measures, with commensurate options for addressing the drivers of deforestation and forest degradation.

Ghanaian Govt Denies Alleged Addo’s Disparaging Comment On Nigeria

-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –From Mike SOGBOLO:

THE Ghana government has denied a disparaging comment credited to it’s President Akufo Addo on Nigeria and Nigerians.

The Ghanaian President in the report on the social media was alleged to have asked Nigerians to go back to their country and make it better.

The headline of the publication read: “Go Back to your Country and Make it Better- Nana Akufo tells Nigerians.”

The body of the report read: “The Nigerian government sending special envoys to us will never change the way we will govern our nation.

“The same Ghanaians you chased away in 1983 during Buhari administration is the same Ghanaians Nigerians are running to for shelter. We fought for a better Ghana with our blood by carrying out a revolution. We killed corrupt politicians for Ghana to be a new nation.

“Nigerians are been chased in South Africa, Kenya, Senegal, UAE,
all over the world because of failed government.

Okonjo-Iweala Laments Rate Of COVID-19 Vaccination In Nigeria, Says WTO Will Change Narrative

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –From Mike SOGBOLO:

DIRECTOR General, World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has lamented the rate of COVID-19 vaccination in Nigeria and in the rest of Africa, promising that her organisation is working to change the story.

Speaking at the National Diaspora Day, 2021 organised by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) with the theme: “Diaspora Integration for National Peace and Development”, Okonjo-Iweala said though the vaccine volume is actually increasing with the figure in June growing by 1.1 billion more doses than vaccines produced in the world in May, representing 45 per cent increase, “the bad news is that most of those doses ended up in the developed countries and the vaccine inequity continues and that is why we are trying to work with them (vaccines producers) to change the story.”

She said: “Right now, one of the things I am trying to do since we are in the pandemic and you know all the numbers we are struggling with when you have so many people vaccinated in developed countries and only a small percentage in Africa or developing countries and the issue is how do we improve the vaccine productions so we can get more?

“How do we even shift the production to African countries. The WTO has the job of monitoring export restrictions and trade facilitation measures, and what I am trying to do is to leverage that, to actually work with companies; to persuade them that ‘if we work with you to monitor supply chains, remove export restrictions, will you invest in our country?

“Just a few days ago, last Thursday, we had a conference with manufacturers of vaccines, all the CEOs of the major companies were there; from Moderna to Pfizer to AstraZeneca, J& J; the Chinese ones also. And the idea is supporting them to invest in Africa, including in Nigeria. I just want to say the President set up a taskforce headed by the minister of health to look at the issue of how we manufacture our own vaccines. All of us from the diaspora are there to see how we can help support the country to do better. From a personal point of view as well WTO point of view, these are some of the things we are doing.”

She equally revealed that the WTO is working with the International Trade Centre which is an offshoot trying to work with women to help them upgrade the quality of their products so they can enter the international market.

She said: “Last time, I met with a group of women from Oyo state who are making Shea butter and they could not export their products to US or Europe because it didn’t meet the phytosanitary standards. The WTO and the ITC worked with them to upgrade the quality; NAFDAC approved it and they have been able to export. So, this is another area we have been helping the small and medium scale business.”

Okonjo-Iweala commended Nigerians in the diaspora for contributing billions of dollars into the country’s economy which has been helping in sustaining Nigeria’s economy.

She said this has helped people in rural areas to send children to school, take of their health, run business, but asked them do more.

She said: “Wherever you are in the diaspora, there is nowhere like home. I think what you need to think about is what can I do to make things better, wherever you are either creating employment or business or civil society organisation, helping to support what the local government is trying to do.”

In her opening remarks, the Chairman/CEO, NIDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa said everything is being put in place to ensure that Nigerians in Diaspora are allowed to vote in the ongoing constitutional review.

She said: “As part of the mandate of NiDCOM, the leadership and team of the Commission is putting its best at ensuing that the issue of Diaspora Voting tops the agenda of the current Constitutional Review by the National Assembly, I assure you that both Committees on Diaspora and our Civil Society Organisations are strongly supporting Diaspora Voting to be actualized in Nigeria in the shortest possible time, especially with the contributions of the Nigerians in Diaspora to national development.”

In his keynote address, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Amb. Zubairu Dada, assured that the federal government on its part would constantly aim to create an enabling environment by adopting policies tailored to support our citizens in Diaspora to ensure their safety and wellbeing.

He noted that we have taken a step in this direction by the approval and adoption of the National Diaspora Policy 2021 (NDP) and its Action Plans for a more holistic approach in the Nation’s engagement with Nigerians in the Diaspora.

He said the National Diaspora Policy 2021 aims to provide a comprehensive and supporting framework for facilitating Diaspora engagement in national development, empowering the Diaspora to contribute effectively, and maximizing the value of diaspora contributions to Nigeria’s development.

He assured that: “This country belongs to all of us and we must work together to ensure its growth and peace as we all have a role to play. All relevant parties are working to ensure that Diaspora Voting Rights are attained, as we believe that Nigerians in the Diaspora have the same rights and duties as Nigerians who reside in Nigeria and thus should be granted the same opportunity to decide the governance process in the Country. We may not get a perfect output at first but little by little, we would achieve our goals and objectives.”

BETWEEN PATRIOTIC PLATITUDE, EMOTION AND JUSTICE

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –By Austen AKHAGBEME:

AMIDST the many compounded issues surrounding the ongoing trials of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and Chief Sunday Adeyemo, alias Igboho, nationalistic ethos and fabricated echoes are almost always sounding like a broken record in our collective ears.

On the flip side, tribal emotions and motions of ethnic solidarity are playing out rapidly on a bigger scale, unknown prior to this moment. Smart ethnic jingoists are making attempt at snatching heroism out of the jaw of despondency.

This is Nigeria for you: while some express sympathy for the extra judicial and Gestapo manner Nnamdi Kanu was ”captured” and the bloody attempt by the DSS at capturing Igboho in his home in the dead of night, emotions takes over and the cry against injustice suddenly overshadows every other prejudice hitherto held against these agitators.

One interesting thing about us is that like wide fire, high profile issues and delicate matters of this nature has the tendency to burn and fizzle out within a short pace of time unexpectedly.

In Nigeria, there is always someone to talk to, who can in turn, talk to someone to tamper Justice with mercy and douse the flaming fire that seems to be so unquenchable when it first started. We are in a nation where ethnicity can be used to raise an inferno and the same factor can still be used to quench it.

While everybody is crying out for peace, only few may remember to cry out for Justice. It is always good to go the way of Justice so that a lasting peace can be achieved than to cry for the peace of the graveyard, as it were.

All these are pangs of nationhood or nation-building and must be treated as such and not with a mind cut out for vendetta, intimidation and oppression . Let the ethnic solidarity demonstrated, especially in the last 24 hours, be a sign to us all that tribal affiliations cannot be wished away in our clime, any time soon.

Trained and established in Fish Production in the 2015/2016 Cycle, Helen has diversified into Poultry and Crop Production. She is passionate about her farming enterprise and has great drive to succeed in agribusiness.

Her success started right from the training centre. “I took my training serious. I learnt Fish Production, Crop Production as well as Poultry. I owe my success to the effort I put into my training,” she enthused.

As a goal getter, she bought extra 2,000 fingerlings in addition to the 2,000 she was given as starter stock bearing in mind that the 145 bags of feed given by the state government would feed them to table size. It worked for her. At some point, she said she stocked 10,000 fish and continued in that stead till she lost count of the number of cycles she had done.

Her business received a big boost when her husband acquired a five-acre land. With this fortune, she diversified to poultry and increased her fish ponds. She currently has two concrete fishponds and six earthen fishponds that have the capacity to take up to 30,000 juveniles. She has a large poultry pen that has the capacity to take 10,000 birds. At present, she has 2,000 laying birds and 600 table size broilers birds. From the 2,000 laying birds, she harvests 46 crates of eggs daily. She has sold off her fish and is awaiting the dry season to restock to prevent loss of her stock to flooding.

Six years after, her success rate is phenomenal. “I started from a rented plot of land. All proceeds from my fish farm, I ploughed back into poultry and I continued to restock to grow the business. Now, I am self-reliant and greatly contributing to the upkeep of my home. I have also diversified to Crop Production, precisely vegetable farming e.g. cucumber,” she added VATION REVA AND HER TRAINEES INNOVATION

DAIRO’S DEADLY DIARY AND THE REST OF US

-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –By Austen AKHAGBEME:

HE missed death by the whiskers. And by sheer bravery, Flt Lt Abayomi Dairo, the hero fighter jet pilot, soldier on in the bushes of death, trying to save a nation so ravaged by terrorism and banditry.

That he’s alive to tell his story speaks volumes of the God- factor in the affairs of men. Here’s a young man who a few months ago, lost his colleague who was on national assignment to a fatal plane crash, yet was unperturbed to dare the heartless and the hitherto pampered bandits in the bushes of northwest Nigeria.

There must be something unique, beyond professionalism and oath of office, that drives these young men into dangerous but ‘patriotic stunts’, to defend their motherland. And I found this very interesting.

Beyond the rhetoric of professionalism, one wonders if there could be any other compelling force strong enough to make someone wants to take a relatively high risk for our dear Nation, Nigeria.

With the risk of being labelled unpatriotic, I would like to ask if risking one’s personal life or comfort for the sake of a nation that cares less about her teeming youthful population is actually worth the while.

In a nation where old crooks, Godfathers and Grandfathers holds sway, how morally justifiable is it to put one’s youthful and promising life on the line to save a nation misgoverned by pilfering and pillaging elite class?

What story will you have to tell your ancestors? That you joined them, fighting for a country you’re not entitled to become what you want to be unless you know someone who knows someone somewhere who can get it done for you?

Until and unless this anomaly of injustices, hate, ethnocentrism, avarice, greed, disservices, mutual suspicion, violence and superiority complex is truly and thoroughly addressed, it might be pretty difficult for one to be the true Nigerian. And this is an ageless fact.

To the likes of Abayomi Dairo, congratulations on loving your motherland at the risk of your dear lives. And to many others of their ages who are roaming about the streets with no hope and opportunities in sight, may Nigeria smile on you someday.

MSF Opens Malnutrition Treatment Centre in Maiduguri

-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) -From Mike SOGBOLO:

MÉDECINS Sans Frontières otherwise called Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has opened a centre in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital for the treatment of children with complicated forms of malnutrition.

The MSF in a statement on Monday said, the centre named Nilefa Keji (which means ‘health is wealth’), has 120-bed and will provide both inpatient and outpatient treatment.

MSF assistant project coordinator Mohammed Dikko Abdullahi was quoted in the statement to have said: “The move from Fori to Nilefa Keji became necessary because we were seeing a lot of malnourished children in our facility,” noting that: “Fori nutrition centre had limited space for expansion and we needed to accommodate more people.”

The new facility has four emergency beds, 14 intensive care beds and two beds for children with kwashiorkor, a severe form of malnutrition (which causes the legs and body to swell). MSF teams will provide inpatient treatment for children with severe acute malnutrition and with moderate acute malnutrition accompanied by medical complications. The new centre also has an outpatient therapeutic feeding centre with space to accommodate more than 150 children and parents each day.

MSF project medical advisor, Rodel Lambatin said: “The medical team has seen increasing numbers of patients with malnutrition over the past couple of months and, looking at the trends at our hospital and recent reports on food security, we expect an increased number of patients in the coming months.”

To staff the new centre, MSF has recruited and trained additional Nigerian nurses, doctors, nutrition assistants and counsellors.

From January to June 2021, MSF staff at Fori nutrition centre treated 1,110 children for severe acute malnutrition as inpatients and provided outpatient care to 1,122 children with moderate acute malnutrition.

The new centre at Nilefa Keji was completed over five months and includes improved infection prevention and control measures. It also has a rainwater channel, designed to prevent flooding and avoid the accumulation of standing water, which can attract insects and present a health risk.

“With the new site, we have more land for any needed extensions and we have more room for staff,” says MSF construction manager Jordan Gartner. “We will be able to handle more patients, especially during the peak malnutrition season.”

OF ROTATIONAL PRESIDENCY AND ELITE INSENSITIVITY IN RECENT TIME

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –By Austen AKHAGBEME:

One of the major challenges of the Nigerian state, especially in a supposedly majoritarian rule such as ours, is the gross insensitivity of our elites to the real issue plaguing the nation.

The mismanagement of our robust diversity by these self-same elites and the many wars for supremacy amongst themselves have brought the nation to its knees over time. Yet even in the face of insecurity and existential threat, the Nigerian elite still carries on with insane politics of rotational presidency and its accompanying tributaries of distractions, hate, tribalism, unhealthy geopolitical alignments and realignments et cetera.

While the power elites in the north are quietly rooting for power retention, their southern counterparts are fighting for power rotation; all amid a damning and seemingly insurmountable security challenge hovering over the nation. How did we get here?

It is gradually becoming more obvious by the day who our collective enemy is in this country. Our enemies are those who do not care about our future but their ambition; those who do not care about our stomachs but about lining up their pockets to the brim with our collective patrimony to secure their future and that of their loved ones.

Why would anyone be discussing the politics of rotational or no rotational presidency in a nation where people do not sleep with their two eyes closed? Why would any sane person be more interested in governing a nation than keeping her citizens safe and secure?

Who will help us tell these desperate politicians that Nigeria is not just an empty geographical space but a real people bamboozled daily by international and local market forces, threatened by daredevil kidnappers and killer herdsmen, incessantly being attacked by terrorists and expressly being rejected by the leviathan itself?

How has the Presidency benefitted the average man in the streets of northern Nigeria in these many years of northern occupation of the highest seat in the land? How has a Southern presidency impacted the Niger Delta East-West Road, the several Eastern villages cut off from civilization by gully erosion or added a 4th or 5th mainland bridge to alleviate the traffic situation in Nigeria’s commercial capital of Lagos?

So, let the noise coming from the coalition forces fighting for the retention of power in the North and their Southern counterparts be ignored while we focus our attention on the serious insecurity challenges that are snowballing into ethnic agitations and also the dwindling purchasing power of the average Nigerian.

2023: Elumelu Expresses Worry Over Voter Apathy, Suppression, Political Alienation, Extra-Civic Voting In Nigeria **Proffer Solutions

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –From Albert OGRAKA:

RT. HON. NDUDI ELUMELU, Nigeria’s House of Representatives Minority Leader, yesterday expressed worries over the many factors promoting voter apathy, political alienation and voter suppression, as well as extra – civic voting patterns in Nigeria.

Elumelu disclosed his worries in a lecture he delivered at the 5th Biennial Convention of the ‘Class of 84’ of St. Pius Xth Grammar School, Onicha Ugbo, Aniocha North, themed “Closer Ties, Stronger Future”, at De Gellys Hotels, Umunede in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State.

In the lecture titled “The Role Of Enhanced Electoral Awareness In Improving The Quality Of Leadership In Nigeria”, the House of Reps Minority Leader posited that it was instructive to reiterate that electoral awareness and mobilization of citizens’ participation in political and governance processes were critical to quality representational leadership.

He said the quality of leadership was determined by informed choices of the electorate made along the lines of electoral worthiness of a candidate and his political party as against the primordial tribal, religious, partisan and pecuniary consideration. This was in addition to the deliberate participation of citizens in utilizing governance to their advantage by holding leaders accountable at all times.

????????????????????????????????????

Elumelu was of the belief that the way forward therefore lies in a concerted, all-inclusive and multi-sectoral electoral awareness creation that can achieve the active participation of above 70% of eligible national population and above 80 percent of registered voters in electoral and political processes.

He charged political parties and mass media, civil society organizations, educational institutions, faith-based organizations, community unions as well as traditional institutions, as critical stakeholders, to join in a targeted broad-spectrum value-driven electoral awareness along positive lines.

The Lawmaker charged critical stakeholders to scale up value-driven enlightenment of citizens on the benefits of quality leadership as a product of their informed participation in electoral and governance processes on the one hand, and the bitterness of negative economic, social and political consequences of poor leadership, arising from their lack of participation in electoral and governance processes, on the other hand.

Elumelu noted that such value-driven enlightenment must focus on electoral worthiness of candidates as against tribal, religious, partisan and pecuniary considerations, as well as massive mobilization towards voter registration.

????????????????????????????????????

While emphasizing that the current continuous voter registration should be maximized for a target of above 80% of eligible voting population to be achieved by 2023, he said citizens must be made to be more conversant with the provisions of the Constitution and the Electoral Act, especially relating to their rights on electoral and governance processes, including areas that grant them powers to hold leaders accountable.

Adding, he said such awareness would enable the citizens to participate in efforts geared towards good governance including setting desired standards for electoral worthiness as well as preferred amendments in the law to guarantee free, fair and credible elections as well as a responsive leadership that was accountable to the citizens.

According to Elumelu “Citizens should be encouraged to demand that antecedents, qualifications and other indices of electoral worthiness of candidate and political parties should be made public and scrutinized alongside their manifestoes at obligatory pre-election debates.

The Aniocha/Oshimili representative at the House of Representatives advocated for a midterm survey so that a leader who fails a set standard in midterm polling should stand unelectable for a second term in office.

Elumelu, who also advocated that Public hearings on serious governance issues should be made more open for participation of citizens, stated that schools should, by law, inculcate a strong civic education system targeted at electoral awareness and enforcement of citizens’ right to governance as compulsory subjects in their curriculums.

While berating the decision by the 9th Senate against electronic transmission of votes count as unconstitutional, the highly regarded Lawmaker charged INEC to take steps to further guarantee credible, free and transparent electoral processes. That registration of voters, accreditation at elections and balloting processes should be made more transparent and less cumbersome.

He added that “INEC should also take steps to accelerate the use of technology to enhance the credibility of voting and electronic transmission of declared results directly from the polling units so as to eliminate collation related malpractices including alteration of results.

“The laws guiding election should be firm in recommending punishments for INEC officials, politicians and political parties found culpable for electoral offences.

“There should be a provision which makes a returning officer culpable of electoral offence in a case where an election is annulled by a court on allegations of electoral violations. Such provision would deter electoral officers from being used to manipulate elections”.

While calling for a sanctioned with the barred from further participating in election for a period of time for a candidate as well as political party whose election is annulled over established charges of manipulations, Elumelu condemned the involvement of military in election, saying that elections were civil responsibility so the military should not be used to intimate and suppress voters

He charged the Mass media to always resist partisan pressure at all times and be more forceful in awareness creation and holding leaders accountable.

“Leadership grooming should be taken more seriously by political parties, schools, traditional institution, faith-based organization and other stakeholders”. He added.

Application Of Technology Strengthens Democratic Process, Says Bashorun Askia

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –From Albert OGRAKA, Warri:

AGAINST the backdrop of the furore generated by the debate on the mode of transmission of election results, a wider application of information technology will strengthen the democratic process by reducing the impact of the human element, Bashorun Askia Ogieh has said.

Bashorun Askia, managing director of Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), spoke weekend at the elective annual general meeting of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) Warri branch to mark its 10th anniversary, held at the PTI Conference Centre, Effurun.

The National Assembly is still embroiled in the controversy surrounding the restriction on incorporating the electronic transmission of election results into the Electoral Act.

Bashorun Askia, represented by his Executive Assistant, Mrs. Anthonette Dick-Duvwarovwo, said widespread intervention of human element in the electoral process is a major impediment to having transparent and credible elections.

He noted that the intensity with which Nigerians clamoured for electronic transmission of election results showed that the people are aware of the real obstacles to credible elections.

“The unmistakable message from this is that Nigerians believe that the less of human element we have in running of government, the more credible our processes will be,” the DESOPADEC boss said.

According to him, the same perception applies to the civil service, the engine room for government, noting that deepening the application of technology and other instruments that reduce the role of human element will improve the quality of governance and reduce waste in the system.

“I am the first to admit that the wheel of government needs the application of information technology to boost efficiency, eliminate waste, block leakages, improve accountability and instill confidence in the people that, indeed, public resources are being appropriately utilized,” Bashorun Askia said.

He urged ANAN to drive the process by designing fool-proof strategies in making government and the other sectors more accountable and transparent.

“Partnering the government in this venture through continuous training, retraining, seminars and workshops by applying modern tools hold the key to a more efficient utilisation of increasingly limited resources for even greater results. In a nutshell, the process of governance has to be digitised and a professional group as ours has to lead the process”, he said.

Bashorun Askia said Nigeria needs ANAN to take the front row seat in charting a fresh course and making government more transparent and responsive in the management of resources.

He commended the Warri branch of ANAN for upholding the ideals of the association, noting that the success of the changes Nigerians seeks to make to make the society better will depend largely on the advocacy of professional and private sector groups as ANAN.

Aregbesola makes case for more women in paramilitary

-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) -From Mike SOGBOLO:

The Minister of interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has made case for more place for female in the nation’s paramilitary services.

Aregbesola said in order to strengthen the fight against insecurity in the country, more women should be encouraged to join the newly formed female squad of the Nigeria Security and Civil defense Corp, (NSCDC), as well as other sister security agencies, since women are known to be more determined in the realizing set goals.

The minister made the case during the launching of the NSCDC Gender Policy Document on Thursday in Abuja, organized in partnership with Partners West Africa Nigeria, (PWAN), the United Nations Women, (UN Women), and the federal ministry of women’s affairs, with funding from the governments of Norway and Germany.

He said women are scientifically and generally known to be more resilient than men and can go to lengths to ensure that they achieve whatsoever they set their mind on doing therefore the training and formation of a special squad made of only females charged with the task of protecting schools from attacks and kidnappings, is apt.

The Minister said: “Women are biologically prepared by nature to be physically strong and suited to military service and by excluding them from military duties, we have lost the natural advantage that nature has given us and other advantages that women can bring to service will also be lost.

Women are very loyal, far more loyal than men to every cause they are in and they are also more result oriented as records have shown that women produce more and better result than men in nearly every assignment.”

Aregbesola also discounted the notion that men are physically stronger than women, saying that where women receive the same level of training, (with the same intensity), as men, the men do not have any physical advantage over them as studies has shown.

Commandant-General of the NSCDC, Dr. Ahmed Audi noted that the female squad was established to address growing security concerns, especially the kidnappings in schools and to bridge gender gap in the agency.

He said: “The NSCDC gender policy is consistent with international, regional and national obligations towards gender mainstreaming and gender equality, particularly the national gender policy of the government which outlines strategies for addressing violence against women in all sectors while creating equal opportunities for both in decision making in all areas and at all levels.

“It was the need to address observed gender inequality in the corps that gave birth to the NSCDC gender policy with the aim of promoting equitable access for both male and female officers to rise to management rank and participate policy formulation and decision making and address gender based barriers among others.”

While calling for a financial mechanism that would ensure that the policy fully comes to life, the United Nations Women’s (UN Women), representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Comfort Lamptey, said that “Nigeria has come far as a leader in West Africa in implementing the UN Security Council resolution 1325 on women and peace and security.”

Also speaking on the efficiency of women in committing to target realization, minister of women’s affairs, Pauline Tallen, said “women are known to deliver on any given task faster, better and more efficiently.”

FG Declares next Tuesday and Wednesday Public Holidays for Eid-El-Kabir

-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –From Mike SOGBOLO:

THE Federal Government has declared Tuesday July 20 and Wednesday July 21, 2021, as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

The Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, who made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, congratulates all Muslim faithful and Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora on this occasion.

Aregbesola in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr. Shuaib Belgore, said: “I call on Muslims to continue to imbibe the spirit of love, peace, kindness and sacrifice, as exemplified by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) and to also use the period to pray for peace, unity, prosperity and the stability of the country, considering the challenges of insecurity we face at the moment. These mainly are bandits in the North West and North Central, insurgents in the North East, kidnappers, armed robbers, ethnic agitators and sundry criminals in other parts of the country” Aregbesola added.

The Minister assured that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is “committed to the security of lives and property of every Nigerian, empowering the citizens for successful living, the provisions of social investments programmes and adequate security in the schools, especially with the spate of innocent school children being targets of kidnapping.”

Aregbesola, while wishing Muslim faithfuls a happy Eid-el Kabir celebration, advised all Nigerians to take responsibility by reporting any suspicious individuals and criminal activities to law enforcement agencies, especially during this festival.

He also enjoined on all Nigerians the observance of all COVID-19 protocols, particularly the non-pharmaceutical measures – wearing facemasks, hand washing and social distancing – designed to keep transmission of the disease at bay.

He said: “We must all take responsibility for containment of the pandemic during this year’s festival.”

The Minister however sympathised with the families of school children who have been kidnapped or suffered one misfortune or another. He said: “Our hearts and prayers of comfort are with you.”

Online Publishers Want NASS To Quash Obnoxious NBC, NPC Amendment Bills

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –By Albert OGRAKA:

DELTA Online Publishers Forum (DOPF), has called on the National Assembly to urgently jettison the obnoxious Nigerian Press Council (NPC) and National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) Acts amendment Bill that is presently before it.

In a Press Release dated July 14, 2021 and signed by it’s Secretary, Comrade Shedrack Onitsha, the Forum said that the amendments sought by “anti-democratic forces” are obviously offensive and diabolical to the growth and sustenance of democracy and could lead the nation into totalitarianism.

According to the statement, “Our demand is hinged on the obvious fact that the amendments seek to arrogate all media powers and control to the Minister of Information and pseudo-agencies of the Federal Government.”

The statement reads:

“The importance of free and unshackled media has been universally acclaimed as the bastion of freedom of expression and human rights in the strengthening of democracy. The point has also been made that this freedom is neither the prerogative of the politician nor the privilege of the journalist. Yet in the exercise of performing their daily work of gathering and transmitting news, journalists are merely exercising every citizen’s right to free speech.

“While the Delta Online Publishers’ Forum (DOPF) appreciate and thank the House of Representative for the step taken so far in withdrawing the vexatious media bill, for further consultation following the outcry that greeted the bill from the media community and civil society groups, we want to appeal to their conscience that they should channel their energy to more productive ventures.

“It is against this background that the DOPF views the proposed amendments to the Nigerian Press Council (NPC) and National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) Acts that was before the National Assembly as obnoxious instruments by power mongers of Nigeria’s political elites to badger and shackle the press and undermine the people’s right to speak and make their opinions known on issues.

“We demand therefore that the so-called amendments should be jettisoned by the National Assembly as the offensive sections are diabolical to the growth and sustenance of our hard-fought and won democracy which is currently under assault by anti-democratic forces with eyes on leading the nation into totalitarianism. Our demand is hinged on the obvious fact that the amendments seek to arrogate all media powers and control to the Minister of Information and pseudo-agencies of the Federal Government.

“Accordingly, we reject the disguised evil intent of the proponents of the amendment bill and their sponsors who are hiding in the background to nullify media independence by making the media subject to the control of the whim and caprice of presidential control. The evil intent of the proponents of the despicable bill is its deadly pretence not to acknowledge the importance of press freedom as the foundation of many other human rights covering freedom of speech, freedom of the press, which gives individuals and communities the right to articulate their opinions without fear of retaliation, censorship or punishment.

“It pretends not to know that a free press helps to inform the people in print, online, or on TV or radio, thus underscoring the point that knowledge is power. It also pretends not to know that it is through a free exchange of information that people can be fully aware of what’s going on around them, and so can meaningfully participate in their communities or democracies.

“Therefore, in rejecting the obnoxious amendments we call attention to the fact that local and national reporters, bloggers and news outlets keep people informed about what is happening in the world around them, and that freedom of expression allows people to access information about current events and matters of public interest – whether that’s from large media companies, local newspapers, or each other through citizen journalism and social media.

“Therefore, we call on the National Assembly members to stand up and protect media independence by jettisoning the clauses that seek to criminalise functions of the journalist and undermine Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of which Nigeria is a signatory.

“We demand that the media sector regulation must not be subjected to the influence and control of politicians working for the government of the day. Thus, the proposed amendment must be discarded and thrown overboard because it is to undermine the people’s inalienable right to drive home a legitimate point of view, and so express their feelings against injustice and unfair treatment. It is a sinister move to criminalise the people’s right to free speech.

“We call on members of the National Assembly to recognize the place of the media as the Fourth Estate of the Realm in a democracy and honour it. They must see the proponents of the very offensive bill as an unpleasant bill for who they are: Anti-people.”

ODOGU ISELEGU (FOR WOLE SOYINKA AT 87)

ODOGU ISELEGU
(FOR WOLE SOYINKA AT 87)

At eight seven, your road
Is full of sacrifices on the bank
Of a suffocating stifling river.

And the vapour of vanity
Shy away from your blinding presence
Like the leaves of Itikoti shrine.

Daring deity of duels
Born into clamorous burnfire of struggles.

In parturition of nation’s hic – cup
Of gurgling gong tearing tyrants ears
Fainting and death.

Like elephant taking a walk in
The grassy anthills
You, Odogu Iselegu.

Masquerade of gorgeous guttural
Your voice lifts peasants stupor
What panegyrics will be poet – playwright.

Receive but thousand voices
In the womb of eighty – seven lines
You great deity of daily dawn.

Did we not say that
A billion candle light
Can’t go into the ring with the sun.

For you stay straight and solid
In the midst of meagre midgets
Railing, raving, throwing stones and shooting.

Into our oppressors camp
Thunder tightening tyrant’s territories
Retaliatory cannons wither at your whispers.

For your power pop – up peasants hope
You live a sacrificial life of eternal victory
Along love’s lamenting ladder.

Those who sold our country thought
Your life will be brief
Forgetting the charmed circle at your feet.

Those who caged us in their polo hole
Run helter skelter, at your vociferous tongue
That tore through marble palaces.

Your combat monkey – coat
Refuse to thread bare
Even as enemies within give you another.

Gear which you refuse
Demanding justice alone
Which is the first condition of humanity.

At eighty – seven your path
Is full of broken spears
That generations unborn will see.

You, that iroko tree that tyrants
Try to fall with headless machete
In that wee hour of hazy hotness
Feverish ferment in fuming forest.

For even in your nap
Memories can’t meander through
Your barricaded bounteous intellect
In the breezy breathless barn.

Odogu Iselegu
Your voice was heard in
Masquerade gathering in the spirit world
As they salute, your baritonic voice.

Oh, dear
The voice of a daring deity
Direct sun of Ogun
The god of thunder.

The sun is rising
The wind and his son, the whirlwind
Welcome the returning eagle
The sky celebrates your soar.

In this tumultuous time
Now your hands on the plough
You elbows dipped in the sweat
Of a painful labour.

Refusing to quit
In the draining strength
Of your aging toughness
The wind brings a consoling catechism.

Too soon, the withering words
Would challenge your strong voice
Their press releases inept and futile
At eight – seven your face shines.

Wrinkleless in this commanding height
Of Olomo rock
Staring at Aso rock
Unblinking.

Eye- wink duel
Let our people be the arbiter
Of this combative combat of kolocume
Unblinking.

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –From Michael J. EKOKORUWE:

THE executive chairman of Isoko North local government area of Delta State, Hon. Deacon Christian Iteire has commended Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, Governor of Delta State for flood alert sensitization.

Iteire said this when members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Isoko Chapel paid him a courtesy visit at the council secretariat, Isoko North local government area last Friday .

Iteire, who assured members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Isoko Chapel of partnership towards effective reportage of the council programmes and activities, lauded members of the Isoko chapel for floating a monthly newspaper ;‘The Isoko Nation’.

The council boss, while commending Governor Okowa for the timely information on flood alert, noted that, the local government will ensure those living along river banks and flood prone communities are informed to move upland and will prepare for rescue operation when the flood eventually becomes devastating.

He reiterated that measures to curtail the flood as directed by governor Okowa will commence immediately, stressing that landlords and individuals will be informed to clear drainages for easy flow of water and may also open camps for flood victims if necessary.

The council boss commended the Isoko chapel for emerging the best chapel out of the 16 chapels in Delta State in the past , noting that with five years of publishing, the Isoko Nation newspaper should become a daily newspaper in the area and urged journalists to balance reports before publication.

Deacon Iteire condemned the unethical attitude of quacks that infiltrate the Nigeria Union of Journalists to report unverified stories which according to him is not good as watchdogs of the society. He urged the NUJ to quickly identify such quacks in the social media as jungle journalists and keep away from them.

He said, “The council will partner with the NUJ to ensure that the people are timely informed of government programmes and policies”, noting that his government will be an all inclusive government that will impact the people with dividends of democracy that will be remembered.

Iteire further stated that, “to get good news, journalist must move around and we will continue to partner with members of Isoko NUJ to always inform the people about government activities”. He enumerated some of his achievements to include hosting the children during the ‘Children Day’ celebration on May 27th 2021 and Isoko North mini trade fair.

Others are the opening of drainages across the local government area, provision of tables in the council offices for staff and review of ad-hoc security staff salaries in the local government area.

Earlier, the chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists Isoko chapel, Comrade Emmanuel Ekebe commended the council chairman for the visit, and stated that Isoko chapel now 11 years old was inaugurated on the 28th of October 2010, just as the 16 accredited members of the chapel report for various media across Delta State and Nigeria both in print and electronics.

He maintained that in 2017, the Isoko chapel was voted as the best chapel in Delta State in the presence of three state governors having satisfied various ethical standard of journalism and ‘Award’ was received. Comrade Ekebe added that Isoko chapel is the only NUJ chapel to have floated a monthly newspaper that has been running for the past five years.

He noted that as watchdog of the society, the media holds the three tiers of government accountable to ensure safe and better society.

The chairman appealed for cooperation and synergy between NUJ and the local government council.

Nigeria, UAE Quarrel Continues On Travel Ban Over Covid-19 Protocol

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –From Mike SOGBOLO:

NIGERIA and United Arabs Emirates (UAE) have continued to exchange words over the traveling ban imposed into the Arab country.

The Nigerian government had last week come out that contrary to insinuation that the United Arabs Emirates placed a ban on flights from Nigeria, it actually placed a ban on the UAE first due to the terms and conditions laid down by the Emirate.

The United Arab Emirates had June 19 lifted ban on travels between Dubai and Nigeria after a protracted disagreement between the two countries on Covid-19 protocols.

UAE had insisted on travelers from Nigeria undergoing several other COVID-19 tests after the initial test in Nigeria.

UAE had few weeks ago while announcing the resumption of flight between the two countries, said passengers from Nigeria were now expected to ‘have received a negative result for a PCR test taken within 48 hours before departure’.

But in another statement it released on June 21 reversed its initial stance on resumption of flights.

The Emirates statement read, “In line with government directives, passengers flights to and from Nigeria (Lagos and Abuja) are suspended with immediate effect from 21 June, 2021 until further notice.”

In a reaction however, the Secretary of the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19, Dr Mukhtar Muhammed, told journalists that the Federal Government had placed a ban on the Emirates before an announcement came from the UAE.

In another twist to the whole event, the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) issued a statement on Monday, stating that the decision to ban flights from Nigeria was for the public good.

The UAE GCAA said the latest statement was mad in response to remarks made by the Aviation Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria regarding the suspension of flights to and from the United Arab Emirates.

The statement read that: “The GCAA underlines that the UAE transport authorities are committed to upholding the highest standards of public health and safety in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The statement further added: “The GCAA will continue to work tirelessly with its international counterparts to find ways to facilitate travel without compromising public health and safety, and in line with international aviation standards. In this respect, the GCAA looks forward to reviewing constructive responses from the relevant authorities in Nigeria, following the consultations held between the UAE embassy and Nigerian officials over recent months.

“The UAE authorities, like those in every country, have made a number of difficult but necessary decisions throughout this pandemic to protect the health of those in the country. Over the course of the past 12 months, the UAE has introduced a variety of special measures to govern travel between the UAE and a number of countries.”

The statement noted that: “These measures have sometimes been tailored to the particular characteristics of certain areas, but they were always introduced with only one objective in mind: to ensure the health and wellbeing of citizens, residents, and visitors.”

The statement however revealed that: “In some cases, the UAE has decided to restrict all or indirect travel from countries where the COVID-19 situation is especially concerning. This list of countries is subject to regular review and change. These decisions have been taken after reviewing the prevalence of concerning variants, the number of passengers arriving from each country who subsequently test positive for COVID-19, and the integrity of domestic testing facilities. At no point has the UAE ever given certain airlines exemptions from these measures.”

The statement also revealed that: “The UAE government continues to coordinate with the Nigerian government and to closely monitor the current situation, and will proceed with updated measures that are in the best interests of the safety and well-being of citizens, resident, and visitors.”

He said it was only right for the North especially the All Progressives Congress (APC) to allow power to shift to the South, insisting that there was a gentlemen’s agreement that power must rotate between North and South at the formation of the ruling party.

Shettima, who is now a Senator representing Borno Central, made the call for power shift in Abuja on Friday at the public presentation of the book titled: “Standing for the Truth with Courage”.

He said in his remarks at the Book Launch that the hope of the country rest on the mind set of her people, said the problem was not religion or ethnicity but people using it to achieve their goals.

He said: “Our problems are not that of religion or ethnicity. Religion has become a body of rituals devoid of any practical value. People use religion to advance their own individual interests – we have god on our lips and devil in our hearts.

“No religion sanctions oppression. The hope for the black man rests not on South Africans or Kenyans. The hope for the black man rests with the people of this country.”

He warned that: “We have to make this country work. Our country of 211 million people, if this country is to implode where are we going to go? Down is the Atlantic Ocean. Up is Niger Republic. The population of Niger Republic is not up to the population of Kano State. We are going to eat up the entire food reserves of Niger Republic in under two weeks. To our eastern side are the mountain ranges of Cameroon and the Central African Republic. They too have been contending with their own problems.

“On our western sides are the tiny states of Benin Republic, Togo and Ghana. How can they contain us? I told some Western Ambassadors that if this country is to implode, we are not going to go through Libya. Our people will storm Europe through Morocco.”

He added that: “If just two million Syrians knocking on the doors of Europe has brought about Brexit and the emergence of Trump in America, what do you say of about 25 million English speaking Nigerians knocking on the doors of Europe? It would cause reverberations. I believe in equity, justice and fairness.”

He stressed that: “After power have resided in the North for eight years, the irreducible minimum is that there should be a power shift to the South for equity and for justice. We are against oppression and marginalisation by any one group against another.”

Shettima claimed that: “There’s a gentleman agreement in the APC at its formative stage for Power to rotate between the North & the South. And even in the colony of thieves, there exist a code of moral behaviour.”

He warned that: “Just because we are Politicians, how can we believe anything goes?. NO!!!.We should have minimal thresholds below which we shouldn’t operate. President Buhari with his 12 million Votes could not become the President on three attempts until we had a handshake across the River. We are an honourable people and we have to honour our commitment to that pact.”

He said: “The irreducible minimum is for a Power Shift to Southern Nigeria, unless the advocates of Power retention have a hidden agenda for the dismemberment of the Nation. And to be fair to the President, he has neither endorsed nor showed preference for any of the Gladiators.”

The Former Governor said: “With all sense of modesty, if there’s any title for a Political godson,I can comfortably claim to be President Buhari’s Eldest Political Son.In both 2015 & 2019 Presidential Elections, President Buhari garnered the highest quantum of Votes, percentage wise, not in his native Katsina State;not in Kaduna where he calls home for the past five decades; certainly not in Kano with a substantial Daurawa Community nor in Jigawa with his filial ties to neighbouring Kazaure Emirate. The President got the highest percentage of votes in Borno, where he garnered 97% in 2015 & 95% in 2019, followed by our Sister State of Yobe.”

He advised political gladiators across the country to give hear to his call, noting that: “As the Igbos would say,’if a Child washes his hands,he could eat with Kings’.We have truly washed our hands & are major Stakeholders in the Nigeria Project.I believe we have a right to air our views and be listened to.”

Also speaking at the Book Launch, the Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, called for unity and peaceful co-existence of Nigerians.

He said the best way to guarantee unity of Nigeria was for all the people to come together, while commending Gadzama for using his experience to illustrate the importance of standing for truth in his book.

He said: “We are going through difficult times in our country, economic and security but let us recognise that the whole world is going through the same challenge.

“Nigeria is part of the world. But the leadership under which we operate shows we shall indeed overcome all these. If we keep united, keep building, we cannot be ignored by any other country in the world.
“I am convinced that under the leadership of President Buhari, there is going to be a better future. He belongs to all Nigerians.”
