Covid 19: Taskforce Officials Assault Delta NUJ Boss, Media Correspondents

-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA):

Officials of Delta State Taskforce on Environment on Wednesday attacked and assaulted the State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Delta Council, Comrade Michael Ikeogwu as well as DAILY POST Correspondent, Matthew Omonigho who were monitoring the level of compliance on the “Social distance” order of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa with respect to the Corona-Virus pandemic at Otiotio Street in Uvwie Local Government Area.

The NUJ Chairman had approached the Environment Officials who had forced residents of Otiotio Street out of their houses to come out for environmental sanitation against the “Stay at home” order of the governor.

But the Environment Officials who were over twenty in number pounced on the NUJ Chairman and DAILY POST Correspondent just as they destroyed his Nikon D3100 photo-camera.

The Environment Taskforce Officials also held the NUJ Chairman,Comrade Ikeogwu and his colleague hostage for about 45 minutes.

However,it took the swift intervention of the State Chairman of the Environment Taskforce, Mr. Syvelster Oromoni to calm the nerves of his overzealous Officers through a telephone call.

In a chat with our Correspondent, Comrade Ikeogwu said the lives of Journalists are not safe in the State.

He wondered what will become of the ordinary man in the society if Government Officials could attack and assault him and his colleague even after identifying himself as the number one Journalist in the State.

Ikeogwu also decried the incident as uncalled for, unwarranted and condemnable wondering why the taskforce would be working in contravention to the order of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

“Today is not environmental sanitation. Why should a taskforce constituted for environmental sanitation come out on a day that people were asked to stay at home to enforce environmental sanitation?

” Their order was further endangering the lives of the people as it contravenes the social order of the Governor. That was why I intervened to stop them from what they were doing. But they claimed that the order was from their Chairman.

“I am disappointed in the attitude of the leader of the team having after introducing myself to him, ordered his boys to attack me and my colleague. I wish to call on the State Governor to look into this matter because many people will fall victim of this before the end of the lockdown order.

“It was the residents of the area who called us to come and see what was happening. How they were being forced to come and do environmental sanitation. However, I thank God it didn’t go beyond that. I will go and treat myself because I was attacked.”

Some residents of the area who spoke after the altercation between the NUJ Chairman and the Taskforce condemned the acts.

They said it was not environmental day just as they wondered why they were forced to come out for sanitation.

One of the residents simply identified as Mohammed said,”We were forced out of our houses. If you say No, they will beat and arrest you. That’s why I came out like other people for the sanitation. “

COVID-19: PRESIDENT BUHARI SPEAKS TO NIGERIANS *Orders Shutdown Of Lagos, Ogun, FCT *Urges Compliance To Health Rules

ADDRESS BY H.E. MUHAMMADU BUHARI, PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA ON THE COVID- 19 PANDEMIC SUNDAY 29TH MARCH, 2020

  1. Fellow Nigerians,
  2. From the first signs that Coronavirus, or COVID-19 was turning into an epidemic and was officially declared a world-wide emergency, the Federal Government started planning preventive, containment and curative measures in the event the disease hits Nigeria.
  3. The whole instruments of government are now mobilized to confront what has now become both a health emergency and an economic crisis.
  4. Nigeria, unfortunately, confirmed its first case on 27th February 2020. Since then, we have seen the number of confirmed cases rise slowly.
  5. By the morning of March 29th, 2020, the total confirmed cases within Nigeria had risen to ninety-seven.
  6. Regrettably, we also had our first fatality, a former employee of PPMC, who died on 23rd March 2020. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family in this very difficult time. We also pray for quick recovery for those infected and undergoing treatment.
  7. As of today, COVID-19 has no cure. Scientists around the world are working very hard to develop a vaccine.
  8. We are in touch with these institutions as they work towards a solution that will be certified by international and local medical authorities within the shortest possible time.
  9. For now, the best and most efficient way to avoid getting infected is through regular hygienic and sanitary practices as well as social distancing.
  10. As individuals, we remain the greatest weapon to fight this pandemic. By washing our hands regularly with clean water and soap, disinfecting frequently used surfaces and areas, coughing into a tissue or elbow and strictly adhering to infection prevention control measures in health facilities, we can contain this virus.
  11. Since the outbreak was reported in China, our Government has been monitoring the situation closely and studying the various responses adopted by other countries.
  12. Indeed, the Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) was one of ten global health leaders invited by the World Health Organisation to visit China and understudy their response approach. I am personally very proud of Dr Ihekweazu for doing this on behalf of all Nigerians.
  13. Since his return, the NCDC has been implementing numerous strategies and programs in Nigeria to ensure that the adverse impact of this virus on our country is minimized. We ask all Nigerians to support the work the Federal Ministry of Health and NCDC are doing, led by the Presidential Task Force.
  14. Although we have adopted strategies used globally, our implementation programs have been tailored to reflect our local realities.
  15. In Nigeria, we are taking a two step approach.
  16. First, to protect the lives of our fellow Nigerians and residents living here and second, to preserve the livelihoods of workers and business owners to ensure their families get through this very difficult time in dignity and with hope and peace of mind.
  17. To date, we have introduced healthcare measures, border security, fiscal and monetary policies in our response. We shall continue to do so as the situation unfolds.
  18. Some of these measures will surely cause major inconveniences to many citizens. But these are sacrifices we should all be willing and ready to make for the greater good of our country.
  19. In Nigeria’s fight against COVID-19, there is no such thing as an overreaction or an under reaction. It is all about the right reaction by the right agencies and trained experts.
  20. Accordingly, as a Government, we will continue to rely on guidance of our medical professionals and experts at the Ministry of Health, NCDC and other relevant agencies through this difficult time.
  21. I therefore urge all citizens to adhere to their guidelines as they are released from time to time.
  22. As we are all aware, Lagos and Abuja have the majority of confirmed cases in Nigeria. Our focus therefore remains to urgently and drastically contain these cases, and to support other states and regions in the best way we can.
  23. This is why we provided an initial intervention of fifteen billion Naira (N15b) to support the national response as we fight to contain and control the spread.
  24. We also created a Presidential Task Force (PTF) to develop a workable National Response Strategy that is being reviewed on a daily basis as the requirements change. This strategy takes international best practices but adopts them to suit our unique local circumstances.
  25. Our goal is to ensure all States have the right support and manpower to respond immediately.
  26. So far, in Lagos and Abuja, we have recruited hundreds of ad-hoc staff to man our call centers and support our tracing and testing efforts.
  27. I also requested, through the Nigeria Governors Forum, for all State Governments to nominate Doctors and Nurses who will be trained by the NCDC and Lagos State Government on tactical and operational response to the virus in case it spreads to other states.
  28. This training will also include medical representatives from our armed forces, paramilitary and security and intelligence agencies.
  29. As a nation, our response must be guided, systematic and professional. There is a need for consistency across the nation. All inconsistencies in policy guidelines between Federal and State agencies will be eliminated.
  30. As I mentioned earlier, as at this morning we had ninety-seven confirmed cases. Majority of these are in Lagos and Abuja. All the confirmed cases are getting the necessary medical care.
  31. Our agencies are currently working hard to identify cases and people these patients have been in contact with.
  32. The few confirmed cases outside Lagos and Abuja are linked to persons who have travelled from these centres.
  33. We are therefore working to ensure such inter state and intercity movements are restricted to prevent further spread.
  34. Based on the advice of the Federal Ministry of Health and the NCDC, I am directing the cessation of all movements in Lagos and the FCT for an initial period of 14 days with effect from 11pm on Monday, 30th March 2020. This restriction will also apply to Ogun State due to its close proximity to Lagos and the high traffic between the two States.
  35. All citizens in these areas are to stay in their homes. Travel to or from other states should be postponed. All businesses and offices within these locations should be fully closed during this period.
  36. The Governors of Lagos and Ogun States as well as the Minister of the FCT have been notified. Furthermore, heads of security and intelligence agencies have also been briefed.
  37. We will use this containment period to identify, trace and isolate all individuals that have come into contact with confirmed cases. We will ensure the treatment of confirmed cases while restricting further spread to other States.
  38. This order does not apply to hospitals and all related medical establishments as well as organizations in health care related manufacturing and distribution.
  39. Furthermore, commercial establishments such as;

a. food processing, distribution and retail companies;

b. petroleum distribution and retail entities,

c. power generation, transmission and distribution companies; and

d. private security companies are also exempted.

  1. Although these establishments are exempted, access will be restricted and monitored.
  2. Workers in telecommunication companies, broadcasters, print and electronic media staff who can prove they are unable to work from home are also exempted.
  3. All seaports in Lagos shall remain operational in accordance with the guidelines I issued earlier. Vehicles and drivers conveying essential cargoes from these Ports to other parts of the country will be screened thoroughly before departure by the Ports Health Authority.
  4. Furthermore, all vehicles conveying food and other essential humanitarian items into these locations from other parts of the country will also be screened thoroughly before they are allowed to enter these restricted areas.
  5. Accordingly, the Hon. Minister of Health is hereby directed to redeploy all Port Health Authority employees previously stationed in the Lagos and Abuja Airports to key roads that serve as entry and exit points to these restricted zones.
  6. Movements of all passenger aircraft, both commercial and private jets, are hereby suspended. Special permits will be issued on a needs basis.
  7. We are fully aware that such measures will cause much hardship and inconvenience to many citizens. But this is a matter of life and death, if we look at the dreadful daily toll of deaths in Italy, France and Spain.
  8. However, we must all see this as our national and patriotic duty to control and contain the spread of this virus. I will therefore ask all of us affected by this order to put aside our personal comfort to safeguard ourselves and fellow human beings. This common enemy can only be controlled if we all come together and obey scientific and medical advice.
  9. As we remain ready to enforce these measures, we should see this as our individual contribution in the war against COVID-19. Many other countries have taken far stricter measures in a bid to control the spread of the virus with positive results.
  10. For residents of satellite and commuter towns and communities around Lagos and Abuja whose livelihoods will surely be affected by some of these restrictive measures, we shall deploy relief materials to ease their pains in the coming weeks.
  11. Furthermore, although schools are closed, I have instructed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development to work with State Governments in developing a strategy on how to sustain the school feeding program during this period without compromising our social distancing policies. The Minister will be contacting the affected States and agree on detailed next steps.
  12. Furthermore, I have directed that a three month repayment moratorium for all TraderMoni, MarketMoni and FarmerMoni loans be implemented with immediate effect.
  13. I have also directed that a similar moratorium be given to all Federal Government funded loans issued by the Bank of Industry, Bank of Agriculture and the Nigeria Export Import Bank.
  14. For on-lending facilities using capital from international and multilateral development partners, I have directed our development financial institutions to engage these development partners and negotiate concessions to ease the pains of the borrowers.
  15. For the most vulnerable in our society, I have directed that the conditional cash transfers for the next two months be paid immediately. Our Internally displaced persons will also receive two months of food rations in the coming weeks.
  16. We also call on all Nigerians to take personal responsibility to support those who are vulnerable within their communities, helping them with whatever they may need.
  17. As we all pray for the best possible outcome, we shall continue planning for all eventualities.
  18. This is why I directed that all Federal Government Stadia, Pilgrims camps and other facilities be converted to isolation centers and makeshift hospitals.
  19. My fellow Nigerians, as a Government, we will avail all necessary resources to support the response and recovery. We remain committed to do whatever it takes to confront COVID-19 in our country.
  20. We are very grateful to see the emerging support of the private sector and individuals to the response as well as our development partners.
  21. At this point, I will ask that all contributions and donations be coordinated and centralized to ensure efficient and impactful spending. The Presidential Task Force remains the central coordinating body on the COVID-19 response.
  22. I want to assure you all that Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies with a role to play in the outbreak response are working hard to bring this virus under control.
  23. Every nation in the world is challenged at this time. But we have seen countries where citizens have come together to reduce the spread of the virus.
  24. I will therefore implore you again to strictly comply with the guidelines issued and also do your bit to support Government and the most vulnerable in your communities.
  25. I will take this opportunity to thank all our public health workforce, health care workers, port health authorities and other essential staff on the frontlines of the response for their dedication and commitment. You are true heroes.
  26. I thank you all for listening. May God continue to bless and protect us all.

President Muhammadu Buhari

29th March 2020.

*Training healthcare personnel
*Producing alcohol-based sanitisers
*Intensify public enlightenment
*Appeal for calm and vigilance
*All primary, secondary and tertiary institutions are to be closed effective Wednesday, March 25, 2020 for 30 days

PRESS STATEMENT BY HIS EXCELLENCY, SENATOR, DR IFEANYI OKOWA, GOVERNOR OF DELTA STATE, TO THE PEOPLE OF DELTA STATE ON THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC

Fellow Deltans,

As you are aware, the world is currently battling with the Coronavirus, (also known as COVID-19) pandemic. As at March 16 this year, cases of COVID-19 have been reported in 151 countries. In Nigeria, there have been 12 confirmed cases with one death recorded so far. There is yet no confirmed case of coronavirus in Delta State. However, we have taken the following proactive steps to prevent the spread of the disease and stop transmission if it occurs.

The State Government has already established a purpose-built and well-equipped isolation centre at the Federal Medical Centre in Asaba to handle any emergency.
We have embarked on training of healthcare personnel to work at the isolation ward.
Training and engagement of 129 Red Cross workers across the State is on-going
Identified and established holding rooms in all zonal and all state hospitals across the State
Training of five members of the Rapid Response Team in each Local Government Area.
Training of laboratory scientists on sample collection

Arrival cards to be completed by all in-bound passengers and crew in the two airports (Warri and Asaba) and three seaports (Warri, Koko, and Sapele).
All passengers arriving Asaba airport are already subject to temperature measurement
All incoming sea vessels to observe a 14-day quarantine period to be cleared by the Port health personnel before birthing in any seaport in Delta State.
We are also assisting in the local production of alcohol-based hand sanitisers

The Ministries of Health and Information have been mandated to intensify public enlightenment campaigns to inform and sensitize the public on safety protocols regarding COVID-19.

  1. Fellow Deltans, while this Government will spare no effort or resources to ensure the health, safety and protection of citizens, it is important for us to know that observing proper hygiene and World Health Orgainsation-mandated safety protocols remain the best way to protect ourselves and stop the spread of this virus.
    Some Important Facts About COVID-19
There is currently no cure for the disease.
The virus is believed to spread mainly by person-to-person contact.
It can be transmitted through handshakes.
It can also spread through coughing and sneezing by a carrier; the droplets can fall on the mouths and noses of people around, or possibly inhaled.

How to Protect Yourself
The best way to prevent this virus is to avoid being exposed to it.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick or appear to be sick.
Practise social distancing; avoid handshakes and hugs. Maintain about five feet distance when talking with people.
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for 20 seconds after you leave the office, workshop, market, bus/taxi, motor parks, and public gathering of any sort. Do the same after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.
If water and soap are not readily available, use an alcohol-based sanitiser.
When you cough, cover your mouth with a clean, disposable tissue or with your bent elbow.
If you have cough or high temperature, stay away from others as much as possible.
Very importantly, avoid touching your nose, eyes and mouth with unwashed hands.
General Appeal

I want to appeal to all of us to remain calm and vigilant. We must not panic. We can easily overcome this threat if we abide by the above measures and all other information from the National Centre For Disease Control (NCDC).

We will easily defeat the spread of this virus if everyone sees himself/herself as a potential carrier who does not want to spread the virus. To adopt a superstitious approach as many of us do that ‘it is not my portion’ could prove to be fatal.
This is no time for self-medication. If you notice at any point in time that you have fever, do not hesitate to call on the relevant authorities/ or visit the nearest hospital.

  1. Henceforth, I wish to direct as follows:
All primary, secondary and tertiary institutions are to be closed effective Wednesday, March 25, 2020 for 30 days.
Parents should endeavour to provide hand sanitizers for their children.
Hand wash stations must also be provided at easily identifiable points in the markets. The leaders of the various market associations to please take note.
Offices must ensure that they are fitted with the right type of sanitizers.
Supermarkets, malls, churches and other places of worship should provide hand sanitizers for customers/worshippers.
  2. Finally, I wish to emphasize that we shall overcome this threat. We must take precaution, yes. But panic, CAPITAL NO! We are carefully monitoring developments around the country and the State and will update Deltans accordingly and, where necessary, take drastic actions.

I advise all Deltans to desist from publishing unverified information capable of causing panic and fear, especially on the social media. At this point, what we must fear most is the spread of false information not even the virus itself; infodemic is a greater danger than the pandemic. Deltans are, therefore, far advised to get information from ONLY official channels.

  1. These are the numbers to call in case of emergency.
    0803 075 8179 – State Epidemiologist
    0803 507 8541 – State Disease Surveillance and Notification
    Officer

0803 352 1961 – State Incident Manager

Thank you for your time and attention.
God bless us all.

President Buhari And Lt. Gen Buratai

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –By Abubakar TSAV:

The world is replete with very many tinges of experiences. A man’s bad deeds lives long after his demise, but his good deeds are interred with his bones.

President Muhammadu Buhari accepted the burden of leading Nigeria at a time in its history every aspect of existence in the country was in extreme shambles.

It is repeating the obvious to say, the Military is the strength of every nation. The Army is its first treasured gold and hub of preserving and securing the territorial integrity and sovereignty of a nation from external aggressors.

The Army is the foremost in many ways and ought to pass fitness test all the times to respond to security emergencies.

Unfortunately, President Buhari met a Nigerian Army that was completely in disarray and neglected in infrastructural development; signposted by defaced and dilapidated barracks, ill-equipped armouries and populated by unprofessional and undisciplined soldiers.

Worse of it all, the Nigerian Army was politicized, enmeshed in partisanship and polarized along Nigeria’s faultlines of ethnicity, religion and regionalism.

Equally saddening was the reality that Nigerian soldiers who were formally famed nationally and globally for their gallant exploits in wars and Peace-Keeping Missions could no longer boast of such accomplishments.

Even combating the menace of Boko Haram terrorism and other insurrections in the country was a big challenge to soldiers. Troops disgracefully faltered many times on the battlefield in the face of enemy forces.

The dignity of the Nigerian Army was rubbished by a basketful complaints of favoritism in postings, stalled promotions, unpaid salaries, denial of basic allowances, poor or non-existent welfare packages; lack of motivational incentives to soldiers deployed on special assignments on Internal Security (IS), absence of a reward system for excellence, brazen abuse of Rules of Engagement (ROE), widespread professional misconduct and constant mutinies.

In effect, Nigeria operated and paraded a demoralized and depressed Army, where promotions were earned based on a soldier’s link or affinity with the President or other top notchers in Government.

A soldier’s hard work was not recognized and appreciated with a promotion as reward for excellence unless he either knows ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo or former President Goodluck Jonathan, the serving Presidents of Nigeria at that time.

Military Guard rooms were looking better than barracks where soldiers and their families were living. Army offices across the country were pigsties, and like dwelling places for animals.

The most fatal blow on the Nigerian Army was the deep-seated issue of religion and ethnicity.

They became strong factors in the force to the extent that it gravely affected the operations of the Army as an institution; shattered the coherence and the cord of comradeship among soldiers.

Infinitely politicized, the Nigerian Army was more enthusiastic in performing political duties than their constitutionally assigned professional roles.

So, officers and soldiers had redirected their loyalty and patriotism to specific political parties which their brothers and sisters professed. It was not to Nigeria, the Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces, Army leadership or field Commanders. The productivity of soldiers was on a steady, generous and dangerous decline in a sphere of the Nigerian Army operations.

President Buhari could not accept the eroded values and degradation of the Nigerian Army. He knew he owes Nigerians and the Nigerian Army a sacred obligation to change its status of a degenerated Army to a responsive, responsible and professional Army.

But the President needed a marksman for the job. Thus, came the appointment of Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusufu Buratai, as the Chief of Army Staff and leader of the Counter-insurgency operations in Nigeria.

The COAS was briefed by his Commander-In-Chief on the task at hand. But ab initio, Gen. Buratai was also aware that he needed a standard Nigerian Army to deploy as solution to the countless security challenges which were tormenting the nation.

Having carved a niche for himself as a professional soldier of enviable standing, Gen. Buratai, also a notable administrative guru, launched far-reaching reforms and innovations in the Nigerian Army. And he followed their implementation reverently and meticulously.

Within a short time, the Army began to recover its lost glory and trampled shadows. Today, and with every sense of pride, the narrative of the institution of the Nigerian Army has changed for the better.

Its reputation has soared incredibly. It is attested by the sustained successes of troops over Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorism in the Northeast; soldiers’ professional candour, discipline and adherence to the appropriate code of service loyalty anywhere they serve.

And as long as Gen. Buratai is on the saddle, he has maintained the tempo and is improving it with each passing day. One can assert with certainty, that so long as Gen. Buratai continues to remain on the saddle, the Nigerian Army will keep getting better and excelling in all tasks assigned to it, as it sails gradually to the destination of perfection.

A peep into Gen. Buratai’s leadership of the Nigerian Army shows a pleasing reversal of all the aforementioned odds and negativities, which demoralized, afflicted and hindered our soldiers from performing their professional duties. He has succeeded in insulating our soldiers from partisan politics.

Even when on Election Duty, soldiers remained apolitical and neutral in the exercise of their duties as recently confirmed by the Ebonyi state Governor, Chief David Umahi while assessing the Army’s participation in the 2019 general elections.

Salaries and allowances of troops are paid regularly and promptly; almost every Army Barrack in the country has undergone renovation; new offices have been built for the Army and old ones renovated; the reward system based on excellence has been restored and very active. Even on the battlefield, Gen. Buratai decorates soldiers who have displayed exceptional courage and gallantry in terrorism combats.

Soldiers need not to know Mr. President or have affinity with him to have their promotions effected and timely. All that is required of a soldier is his loyalty, dedication to duty and hard work to earn what he deserves.

Army Hospitals have been animated and stocked with drugs and other modern medical equipment for soldiers and their families. In -service training of soldiers is open to all indiscriminately and once a soldier qualifies or is due for refresher courses, he does not lobby anybody to get the approval.

New training institutions like the Nigerian Army Aviation School and the Nigerian Army University, Biu have been established under the leadership of Gen. Buratai.

Gen. Buratai has introduced multiple incentive packages for the Nigerian Army. These are initiatives that ginger performance enhancement for soldiers.

Interestingly, the Army Chief has repositioned the Nigerian Army in a manner that it has developed its internal capacity to contribute to the economic development agenda of the present political leadership of Nigeria under President Buhari.

Besides establishing new Army Divisions and Units, Gen. Buratai’s leadership has ventured into economic initiatives like the Nigeria Army Farm and Ranches; the Nigerian Army Post-Service Housing Development Limited; the Command Engineering Depot; the Nigerian Army Property Limited and the Nigerian Army Welfare Guarantee Limited among others.

These economic concerns are the first in the history of Nigerian Army and designed to serve both the Army and the Nigerian public.

Therefore, the arrival of President Buhari on the leadership podium of Nigeria and the right choice of Gen. Buratai as the COAS have been the saving grace of the Nigerian Army, which was fast sinking into oblivion. The duo have remained the best thing to have ever happened to the Nigerian Army.

Every soldier today looks at himself with pride and dignity. Troops no longer shirk at the warfront, but fight the enemies even at the cost of their lives. It is not controvertible that the Nigerian Army today stands as one of the best in Africa.

There is every optimism that it can still be the best in considering the various limitations in terms of technology. Nigerians believe it can be the overall in the world one day and Gen. Buratai can make it possible as evident in his determination to leave a legacy for the nation.

BETWEEN SANUSI, TINUBU AND PETER OBI: A KITCHEN ARGUMENT

-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) -By Austen AKHAGBEME:

There’s something I love about a particular childhood friend of mine. Despite the fact that he’s not as educated as the rest of us, he sometimes have this knack for stirring up a political debate in his own limited way.

He it was, that first drew my attention to the possibility of a Buhari defeating a sitting Jonathan even when I never thought such feat was possible in Nigeria. Again, He has given me the above names as “very fit and likely candidates” of the three major ethnic groups in Nigeria come 2023.

Because we are from the South – South, I threw a question at him to suggest a possible candidate from our geopolitical zone, too. I told him I would prefer Donald Duke. He laughed and told told me that we do not need a handsome face to get the job done. And that a scary face like that of Comrade Oshiomhole will suffice. We all roared in laughter. That’s how humorous he can be.

He argued that when the Presidency comes back to the south, the South – south will not be considered. He was particularly angry about the East-West road and the inability of “our very own” to get the project done in six long years of “our opportunity”.

Then we jumped to the issue of the Emir Sanusi being the new touted Political bride from the north. He argued that the man had what it takes to climb the saddle of leadership. I told him that the same people that threw him away will never give him the ticket. He reminded me that it is possible and intelligently drew a not too coordinated inference with Chief Obasanjo and the Yoruba nation in the build up to 1999 elections. Just like Obasanjo, he argued that SLS doesn’t need the vote of Kano people to win the presidential election. I simply dismissed the argument and concluded that SLS need to rest, and recalibrate and think of other avenue to be of help to his beloved people than the Nigerian presidency

As our “Kitchen gist” progresses, I made attempts to pretend that I didn’t hear him suggesting the possibility of a Jagaban for our beloved people of the West. I quickly jumped to our amiable Peter Obi, the vice presidential aspirant of the PDP in the last presidential election.

I told him about my love and support for an Ibo Presidency. Here are a people, decimated physically, numerically and Economically by a needless Civil War ; reabsorbed into the federation, and then cheated in the geographical creation of states (as they’re the only geopolitical zone with 5 states against the rest) and yet unwrittenly and consistently being denied an opportunity too, to the Presidency of Nigeria.

We both ruminated on the reason why it is so. I told him that power is not given but taken. He begged to differ: not with a people of less than six million voters. We concluded that power can only come to the East through negotiations, alignments and realignments of political forces and blocs championed by a prudent, capable hands like that of Peter Obi.

Then we came back to the Lion of Bourdillon, the Jagaban himself. He is a political strategist, charismatic and an old war horse. He has seen it all. He stood alone in the early days of this political dispensation when other western states fell like a pack of cards as the moving train of the PDP, took a sweep of the west. Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu is highly respected among his contemporaries and feared or worshipped by his younger adherents. Jagabanism has become a type of political philosophy deployed to capture power locally and even nationally.

My friend told me how usually difficult it is for a King maker to become a King himself. I allayed his fears and told him that what a good King maker needs in our clime to become a King are two things: money and influence. He quickly reminded me that Atiku had both. I told him that I was shocked that he didn’t remember that Atiku was never a King maker but friend of King makers who have never, for once, trusted him.

As I was getting tired, I excused him to take some rest. He said he want to ask me this final question. “Is Peter Obi the best from the East, Why not Osita Chidoka?” I didn’t have a ready answer. I guess because I was tired and I needed to sleep. He noticed that and quickly dismissed me with a wave of the hand. This childhood friend of mine is quite an interesting fellow.

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA):

The management of Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), have cautioned individuals or groups planning to launch a campaign of calumny and blackmail against the Commission, to desist forthwith, as the claims are null and void.

A Press statement signed by Sunny Areh, Special Adviser (Media & Communication) to the MD/CEO, DESOPADEC read:

“IT has come to the attention of the management of Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) that some disgruntled elements and newly formed opposition groups have planned to launch a campaign of calumny and blackmail against the Commission, using some local tabloids and social media platforms.

“These individuals have already concocted mischievous and malicious lies from the pit of hell to tarnish the image of the Commission and to hoodwink the gullible public, particularly indigenes of the oil bearing communities which fall within the mandate areas of the commission.

“One of such lies being peddled is that the Commission amongst many other frivolous allegations, illegally approved life pension for past Chairmen and Managing Directors of the Commission with a monthly payment of N5million contrary to the provisions of the DESOPADEC Act.

“They also claim that the monthly payment includes; “cost of maintenance and sustenance of four policemen as security, driver and secretary including a new model heavy jeep and a Toyota Hilux pick-up which are replaced with new ones every three years.”

“The general public is hereby put on notice that these are fabricated, outrageous lies that could only have come from detractors who never meant well for the well-being of the people of the oil bearing areas. There are no truths whatsoever in these claims and allegations.

“The Board and Management advises the public to discountenance all such malevolent claims aimed at smearing and maligning the image and reputation of the Commission while also assuring all Deltans, particularly those from the mandate areas of the Commission that the current DESOPADEC Board will continue to do all within its power in positively impacting the lives of our people and achieving the desired objectives of a Stronger Delta.”

Ofou Revealed: As Veteran Journalist Receives Encomiums On Birthday

0

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –By Patrick OCHEI:

The veteran journalist and Chairman, Board of Delta Broadcasting Service, DBS Asaba, Comrade Felix Ofou has been showered with encomiums by friends and staff of DBS to celebrate his birthday.

The man, Ofou, born on the 3rd of March, was fantastically celebrated at the Boardroom of the Television Station by the staff who were enthusiastic about the man known by all as a thoroughbred professional journalist and jolly good fellow.

Giving a Goodwill message as Ofou cut the cake, the General Manager of DBS, Lady Evelyn Binitie eulogized the Chairman who had brought enormous innovations into DBS since his assumption of office.

She described the Chairman as a leader who had brought renewed vigour towards moving DBS to greater pedestal. Maintaining that the Chairman was a blessing at this moment when professional transformation was earnestly desired, Binitie affirmed that together, the whole DBS family would march into greater heights with the goal getter chairman.

Meanwhile, Felix Ofou’s old time friend and trusted Senior Special Assistant to Governor James Ibori, Executive Assistant and State Director of Protocol and and former Governorship hopeful under Uduaghan, Mr. Paul Owumi ran an emotional commentary on the person of Felix Ofou.

He said Ofou was his backbone when he was appointed Executive Assistant on Foreign Relations, helping him to promote his activities in the media at no cost.

Owumi, now Chief of Protocol to Ibori, affirmed that the relationship was so strong that when Ofou was involved in an accident, he was the only one allowed into the ICU and theatre to be with him.

The politician turned pastor, however, implored all present to pray for Comrade Ofou to be guided henceforth by wisdom, stating that a prayer for a friend is a straight way answer from God.

At the end of the prayers, another friend of Ofou, Chief Zanders this time decided to speak on what he termed the ugly side of Felix Ofou.

He claimed he knew Ofou as a Punch correspondent over 24 years, then he too was with the National Orientation Agency. He posited that Ofou was so stubborn and radical as a journalist that the military was always looking for him over one damaging report or the other on Government.

Zanders said while he was always promoting the good image of Government, his friend, Ofou was busy attacking Government; but when the bubble would burst, he was always the one giving him cover as a friend.

Moreover, Zanders concluded by saying that no matter how stubborn, carefree and enjoyment freak Ofou could be, he never joked with his profession. “He loved journalism profession with passion”, he said.

Of course, the celebration in Ofou’s office was partly staged by members of the Media Think Tank that projected Governor Okowa’s reelection, which Ofou was a prominent member. The group members took turn to speak on the sterling qualities of the jolly good fellow veteran journalist.

Mr. Pius Mordi, SA (Politics) to the Governor, described Felix Ofou as easy going, carefree, and one that doesn’t bother on anything but his profession.

The media guru revealed that Ofou was the last Chairman of the Punch Chapel of the NUJ, where the Punch Newspapers had to proscribe unionism in the organization due to the way Ofou was fighting for the rights and welfare of journalists.

Mordi testified that Ofou resigned his appointment with the Punch as a result of that, and that had marked the end of unionism in the Punch ever since.

He therefore admonished the DBS staff to cooperate and support their chairman, warning that he would never condone indolence. He said that even though Ofou loves life and enjoyment, he had never taken half measures in professional practice and he would not take it even in DBS.

Another highbrow journalist and member of the Think Tank, Comrade Norbert Chiazor succinctly described Ofou as a product of grace.

The SA Media to the Governor said every human enjoys amazing grace every now and then, but that Ofou’s story was one of extraordinary grace where God has to declare that He had not finished with his case on Earth.

Chiazor narrated the accident that almost took the life of Ofou, maintaining that until God says it is over it is never over. He confirmed that Ofou was one journalist who had succeeded successive administrations in the State as a political appointee right from Chief Ibori to Dr. Uduaghan and now Senator Okowa.

According to the man known as The Strategist in NUJ parlance, “Felix Ofou is one of the most iconic journalists in the South-South of Nigeria. I draw inspiration from him; he is a man that can turn the earth upside down with his pen.

“One of the greatest challenges of journalism today is that there are willing mentors but impatient mentees. We can never have the likes of Ofou again, except the younger ones are ready and eager to tap from his fountain of knowledge”, Chiazor revealed.

Taking his turn from the list of Think Tank members, the then Deputy Director, Media and Publicity of Governor Okowa’s reelection campaign organization and currently, SSA to the Governor on Communication and Orientation, Prince Obaro Unuafe took time to tell the story of the Think Tank. He said he had known Ofou before, but when he saw him again during the composition of the Think Tank, he knew he was bound to succeed with the task under his purview.

Obaro ascribed Ofou as a unique human, lucidly maintaining that he was not a brown envelope journalist. He said Ofou usually was the one that would shun inducement in the course of doing his professional job, confirming that it was this rare trait that brought both of them together.

He further admonished him never to ever change in his ways of doing good, especially in his journalism field of endeavour.

Fred Akpewe is also a thoroughbred journalist who functioned as the Secretary of the Think Tank. He revealed how Ofou rediscovered him, especially in using his voice as an advantage in broadcasting.

Akpewe averred that the appointment of Ofou as Board Chairman of DBS Asaba, was not an appointment for one of the boys.

He further described Ofou as a slave driver, maintaining that he has the capacity to recognise one’s talent before one knows it.

However, as the only female member of the Think Tank group, Vida Modelo said she only knew Ofou just two years ago but it’s like 20 years.

She affirmed that Ofou is a father to her, saying “He made me realised my dream. I told him my story, how I was trafficked as a girl and had remained bitter about the experience since my miraculous return. He encouraged me to tell my story with a smile and this informed my mission statement, ‘Telling my story with a smile’.

“Today, I have set up my office to tell my story, mentor people, enlighten potential victims of trafficking and fight human trafficking with the right strategies. Today, I am happy, because you made it possible. Thank you for this encouragement sir”, Vida submitted emotionally.

It was a huge celebration in DBS, after which, there was party after party, where the party continued with grass cutter pepper soup and palm-wine at Okpanam road.

MOHAMMADU SANUSI 11: THE TRUTH ON TRIAL

* -Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) – By Austen AKHAGBEME:

His morbid desire has always been that of ascending the throne of his fore fathers. He desired it far more than the Presidency of Nigeria. He got it against the run of play and just after five years, six months and 26 days, he descended abruptly from the throne, forced out by the intrigues of power play miffed in political vendetta.

Mohammadu Sanusi, the 14th Emir of Kano, saw it coming. Yet, he was not deterred or perturbed. The rebel in him will prefer to align with the side of truth than the side of popular opinion. This has brought him infamy, hate, disdain even among his contemporaries and relatives.

When his domain was balkanised and divided among the princes into several autonomous emirates and booby trap of a law was activated in 2019 to prepare a legal ground for his great fall, nobody needed a soothsayer to know that it was just a matter of time.

But the reasons adduced by the state government for his removal were carefully crafted to make the dethroned Emir culpable in the minds of the average Talakawa in Kano. He was said to be disrespectful to constituted authority as unbecoming of a revered ruler, father and the custodian of the culture of the people. He was also accused of financial mismanagement and shady land deals, bringing the Emirate to disrepute. Whether this was true and sufficient enough to dethrone and defile, again, a highly revered traditional institution is a question hanging on our lips.

Sanusi, as controversial as some regard him to be, was a dogged crusader against the backward, conservative, retrogressive and outdated practices, lifestyle, beliefs and mindset of the average northerner vis-a-vis modernity and progress of the northern society. He quoted statistical data to bring to limelight the hidden pains of the girl child and the biting poverty prevalent in the north.

Diplomacy was not part of him when it comes to telling the truth to power. He is an activist that cannot be caged under the royal robes and regale of a monarch. He is too social for the conservative paraphernalia of his dream office, a polished square peg in a round hole. He never forgot his training as an Economist, the reason he could reel out facts and figures and juxtapose them with development index and indicators as it affects the North to the consternation and fury of his traducers.

His intelligence and acquaintance with modernity and the politics of globalization made him fear for the future of the north. Yet, this was his ordeal. Sacred areas like child bearing and rearing, Almajiri education, Sharia, girl child education et cetera, did not miss his prying eyes or his caustic tongue. He truly has fought a fight against conservatism and reactionary forces in the north and paid a costly price. It is said that those who speak the truth are hated the most. And that is the story of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. The truth is truly on trial.

He then, informed the beneficiaries of today’s epoch making event of actualizing the dreams of all the successful trainees, by ensuring that they deploy whatever that was given to them into their passion as a source of income.

In his words, “What we are doing today is by no means a jamboree but a predetermined policy of alleviating and confronting poverty and lack of direction for our women.”

SUPREMACY BATTLE IN BHT/ISWAP TERRORISTS CAMPS OVER LEADERSHIP AMONG KANURIS, HAUSAS, CHADIANS

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA): From Mike Sogbola, North East Correspondent:

“At Present, there is serious crack and fierce acrimony and conflict of interest as well as infighting and battle of supremacy in the terrorists’ camps, – a development that if utilized by the Nigerian security forces could surely see the final and total destruction of Boko Haram and ISWAP’s terrorism in the country.”

All is indeed not well in the terrorists’ camps as highly reliable sources have again confirmed growing animosity, distrust, division and deepening crisis in the BHT/ISWAP Camps.

Current authoritative information received on Saturday the 7th of March, 2020 has revealed that there is indeed further division, mistrust and deepening crisis within the terrorists’ camps.

The latest open hostility in the terrorists’ camps came about as a result of the fall out of the recent attack on GARKIDA in Adamawa State and the pyrrhic attempt to capture Damboa in Borno State that was jointly executed by three deadly groups of the sect.

A highly reliable information indicated that there has been infighting over what the terrorists described as “the fierce struggle for the acquisition and control of booty” by the Abubakar Shekau led group and the other two prominent groups of the terrorists sect.

Reliable sources have alerted that the acrimonious struggle for supremacy and control of booty has again led to the extermination of one of the leaders of the insurgents’ groups by members of the other 2 terrorists’ groups.

In retaliation, the group whose leader popularly known as Amir ibn Abdulfatawi (who was appointed less than two months ago) was killed decided to avenge the killing by executing the leader of one of the 2 groups (whose identity is yet to be ascertained) who masterminded the killing of their leader.

Subsequently, the situation got worse when they went back to Lake Chad area. At the Lake Chad area, the Budumas and Yantawawen Chad (Chadian twins) who have upto 400 members demanded to produce leader and overall Commander of the sect to specifically take Charge of the Chad basin.

As this was brewing, the Hausa – Fulani elements among the BHTs expressed misgivings, – arguing that nobody should address or deliver sermon to them in Kanuri language anymore, and warned that they will never accept it again, citing what they termed as “increasing negation of the original tenets of holy Quraan and prophetic hadith” by the Kanuri Amirs.

At Present, there is serious crack and fierce acrimony and conflict of interest as well as infighting and battle of supremacy in the terrorists’ camps, – a development that if utilized by the Nigerian security forces could surely see the final and total destruction of Boko Haram and ISWAP’s terrorism in the country.

OKOWA: A Passion For Technical Education

-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) – By Ruth UGBECHIE:

Lest we forget, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State qualified as a medical doctor at the age of 22. That was in 1981 when he earned his MBBS from the University of Ibadan.

Ahead of his university education, he had made the second-best Higher School Certificate (HSC) result in the whole of the then Bendel State.

A precocious child and a worthy ambassador of the defunct Bendel State (now Edo and Delta states) where academic distinction, sporting excellence and pristine moral values form the DNA of the people. As a medical doctor, Okowa applied his skill to help humanity.

He brought cure to the sick, gave hope to the hopeless. He also became his own boss at a time, an employer of labour and creator of wealth. He would later quit private practice for public service. He’s a knowledge-driven man in all ramifications.

In a sense, one can safely say that Okowa is a beneficiary of quality education graciously made possible in his early life by his progressive-minded parents. Fast-forward to 2015, 34 years later. Okowa the young medical doctor had become the Governor of Delta State, one of the twin-states of the old Bendel and he’s giving back to the people what he got several decades ago: Good, quality education. He’s doing it with bullish determination.

One of the nuggets of his now popular Stronger Delta agenda is human capital development. But the governor’s idea of human capital development is not in the award of bogus certificates and degrees. It’s in skills acquisition, in preparing Deltans to create the jobs rather than be in interminable pursuit of jobs. He has tweaked the state’s education policy to fit into the demands of the modern era. The world is intricately interconnected in an emergent knowledge era where innovation, skills deployment and solution creation rather than certificates rule the roost.

Globally, there is now more emphasis on what you can do not on what degrees you have acquired. The best of innovators and change agents from Bill Gates of Microsoft, Larry Ellison of Oracle, Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook, Coco Chanel (born Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel in France) of Coco Chanel perfumes and clothiers, Steve Jobs of Apple among others were either school dropouts or persons who never had the luxury of certificate-awarding formal education.

The likes of Ray Kroc (McDonald’s), Nigeria’s Cosmas Maduka, Ingvar Kamprad (of upholstery maker IKEA), Mary Kay Ash (Mary Kay Cosmetics), Andrew Carnegie (Carnegie Steel Company) and lots more have proven that success in life is worth more than designed papers called degree certificates. They all activated their inner talents some through entrepreneurship, some through inventions and some by putting their skills to work.

Today, these men and women are pacesetters, innovators, inventors, successful entrepreneurs and creators of jobs and wealth. They put skill to action, not their degrees, not their certificates. And now they are proud employers of those with long degrees and multiple certificates. True, marketplace life has evolved from ‘what do you have’ to ‘what can you do?’ The world is looking for those who create solution, not those who can articulate all the problems but offer no solution. Nations around the world have long realized this and have tailored their education towards skills acquisition and hands-on training rather than the conventional textbook hypothesis.

The United States, Europe and lately Asia have moved fast into the realm of skills acquisition, innovativeness and hands-on education. The Asians, particularly India and China, have become world powers in software engineering and other aspects of technology on account of the heavy dose of technical education in their school curriculum.

This is the template Okowa is adopting in Delta State, changing the concept of education from certificate to certification, from classwork to lab-work, indeed from paper to skills. It’s not for nothing that he has rehabilitated and equipped six technical colleges just to produce graduates with the requisite skills set for entrepreneurship and job creation. He has opened well-equipped vocational centres and he wants to establish more technical colleges before his term runs out in 2023.

In effect, he’s laying strong foundation for the making of next generation billionaires and multi-millionaires. He’s cultivating the ground to produce generation-next techpreneurs, manufacturers, economic enablers and growth-agents who would in no distant time turn their skills to wealth.

The man they call Roadmaster is not done just yet. While presenting the 2020 budget before the State Assembly, he said: “We intend to continue to reposition our educational system to equip our youth population with the skill set needed for this new world of rapid change and digital revolution. As you are aware, technical and vocational education has been our main policy thrust in this sector.

During our first tenure, we completed the rehabilitation and equipping of the six technical colleges in the state. Accreditation of all trade subjects by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) was achieved in 2018 and plans are underway for the establishment of additional technical colleges in the remaining 19 Local Government Areas of the state.”

To actuate this vision, the Ministry of Technical Education was recently created to consolidate the gains made and institutionalise technical cum vocational education in the state’s school curricula. Part of the functions of the new ministry include formulation of policies for technical education, management of technical colleges in the state, coordination of the accreditation of technical colleges and vocational centres, acting as liaison with appropriate Ministries, Departments and Agencies in the implementation of technical and vocational education and training programmes in the state, among others.

Okowa’s commitment to technical education stands him out as a leader who understands the demands of the modern era in the area of national and global competitiveness. Knowledge, not natural resources, is the new resource.

And this is not knowledge of the books only; it’s knowledge that challenges the status quo; that creates, innovates and births solution. It’s beyond head knowledge but the type you acquire by getting involved in the efforts to create solution for the myriad challenges that dog human existence.

India is today the outsourcing capital of the world. Over 50 percent of software used in the United States are developed in India. India has a culture of technical education and education with rich numerate content.

The Asian software technology super power has Institute of Technology scattered across its many cities. Vocational centres and skills acquisition institutes define the knowledge space of China. The same applies for Singapore, Pakistan, South Korea and other Asian nations. And it’s paying off because none of the most technically advanced nations of US and Russia can afford to ignore these Asian nations.
Governor Okowa’s passion for technical education underscores his vision as a 21st century leader to build technical capacity and competences among his people. It’s the surest ticket to break the limiting walls of paper education that has kept Nigeria, nay Africa, at the receiving end in a technology-driven and technology-determinant global economy.

A new Delta is being built on the solid ramparts of technical education. Okowa should stay this course because out of the oasis of technical education shall spring forth fountains of innovation, invention, entrepreneurship and sundry channels of wealth creation. If China, India, South Korea et al could do it, we, too, can. I vote for technical education.

According to him, the desire for the university is to provide more opportunities and create a level playing field for all Nigerians seeking to gain technical education in the region which is not only the bedrock of development but also in line with the recommendations of the United Nations Educational Scientific and cultural organization (UNESCO), which says that a minimum of 26 percent of a country’s annual budget and 6 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) should be invested in funding education.

In giving justification for the establishment of the University, Hon. Elumelu who represents Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency of Delta State in the House of Representatives, said that “Asaba in Delta state is one of the few state capitals without a federal university despite its advancement, population and strategic location” adding that the need to address the technologically disadvantaged situation in the area has also necessitated the desire to propose the institution.

Elumelu, who described the bill as a straight forward legislation, urged members to support the establishment of the institution in Asaba, as the site of the College of Education (Technical) being proposed for its location already “has facilities that can meet the standard of a University, hence the need for the upgrade”.

He listed the facilities to include, School of Vocational Studies, Standard and Well Equipped Functional Library, Administrative blocks, Staff quarters, Lecture Theatres, Shuttle buses, Multipurpose hall, Health centre, Technical works building and Playing grounds amongst others and appealled for overwhelming support from members to vote the bill for second reading.

To compliment the efforts of the State government on measures to curb the spread of the dreaded Lassa fever virus in Nigeria, the Board of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, under the leadership of Evang. Michael Diden (Chairman) and Bashorun Askia Ogieh (MD/CEO), has mandated the Medical Health and Safety Unit of the Commission to embark on an enlightenment campaign in all mandate areas of the Commission, on the epidemiology and control of Lassa fever.

Briefing the staff at the Commission’s Headquarters in Warri recently, the Head of the Medical Health and Safety Unit, Dr. Michael Ekotogbo, who led the other staff of the Unit on the enlightenment campaign while informing all of a confirmed case of the virus in Warri said, “Lassa fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic fever, a member of the Arenaviridae family, which is an enveloped, single-stranded, bi-segmented RNA Virus that is zoonotic or airborne”.

He explained that the virus is spread by a “multimammate rat”, a rat with many breasts, but advised that since one would not easily distinguish it from other rats, all rats within our vicinity should be exterminated.

He listed the transmission modes to include direct contact with materials or eating food that has been contaminated by the urine or droppings from the infected rat; cuts or sores; airborne transmission; person-to-person body contact; through breast milk, etc.

The symptoms of Lassa fever which typically occur 1-3 Weeks after the patient comes in contact with the virus, according to Dr. Ekotogbo, include fever, headache, facial swelling, conjunctivitis, mucosa bleeding, nausea, blood in vomit, blood in stool, cough, chest pain amongst others.

Emphasizing that those living in rural areas where you have poor sanitation or crowded living conditions should be wary of the virus, he cautioned that amongst other measures, all persons suspected of Lassa fever infection should be admitted to isolation facilities and their body fluids and excreta properly disposed of; declare war on rodent population and avoid contact with them; put food away in rodent proof containers; keep the home generally clean and discourage the use of rodents as a food source.

In addition, Dr. Ekotogbo advised staff to imbibe the hand washing culture and the use of hand sanitizers while reducing as much as possible, hand shakes with people. He also advised staff to steer clear of any coughing or sneezing persons to avoid airborne transmission.

It is pertinent to state here that the Health minister, Dr. Osagie Ehanire had in a recent report stated that 27 States of the federation including Delta State already have reported cases of the virus with about 47 deaths recorded.

OUR SUPREME COURT: A KNOTTY CONVERSATION

-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) – By Austen AKHAGBEME:

The Fury, zest and the emotion with which Justice Amina Augie read out the decision of the Supreme Court on the application of the APC to the apex court to review itself on the judgment on Bayelsa, depicts a long seething desire to preserve the sanctity of the highest and holiest chambers of the land by these keepers of the Temple of Justice.

But the riveting and resonating question is : how do we juxtapose the fact above with the palpable and avoidable injury done to our nascent Democracy, seeing that the court readily threw away the popular votes of the majority of the Bayelsa People all in a bid to salvage what remains of an assumed public disdain for the apex court?

Those with this purview thinks that this amounts to sheer judicial tyranny which is detrimental to the tenets of representative governance. The mere fact that the court’s decision was final “in the true sense of finality” and nothing on earth can reverse it except by legislation, makes the apex court a Law unto itself. This obviously portends danger for Representative governance in our clime. This obviously means that the misrepresentation of facts, wrong computation and clerical errors associated with Elections et cetera, are offences only when the SC sees it to be so. This is truly worrisome and calls for a deep concern by every lover of Democracy and democratization.

Quite unlike Justice Amina Augie who dole out outrageous fines against three learned silks for daring to bring to the honorable court a watery case full of fury but no substance, Justice Kayode Aroowola who read Tuesday’s judgment on the Imo election, was less furious.

On Imo Election, the apex court posited that there is no law mandating the SC to review itself once a judgement is given. This is against the fact that the error of computation of results which gave the declared votes of the APC Candidate, Senator Hope Uzodinma, higher than that of the entire registered voters in the state, is glaring and staring at them in the face. Again, Democracy suffers and was crucified at the alter of a face saving judicial ego, expediency and the “preservation” of the sanctity of the apex court.

There are those who are of the opinion that the best way the apex court can redeem itself against the backdrop of the recent controversially land marked judgments, is the refusal to rescind her decision by reviewing itself at the whimsical excuses of desperate politicians. This could have caused a chaos, as some parties were already asking for a review of previously heard and forgotten judgements of the past.

One of the characteristics of the justice system we inherited from our colonial masters is that, there must be an end to all litigation no matter whose side the pendulum swings.

But Nigerian politicians are an interesting lot. The attempt to dare the apex court to review itself was one huge joke taken too far. Again, whether or not “the joke” was really taken too far against the backdrop of its detrimental and damaging effects of the SC decisions on our nascent democracy, is a matter of conjecture.

Boko Haram That Attacked Garkida Will Never Lift Their Arms Again, Says CAS

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) – From Mike Sagbola (North-East Correspondent):

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar on Sunday said those insurgents that came to attack Garkida will never be around to lift their arms against the nation again.

Abubakar said the tracked into the enclave and neutralized by the Nigerian Air Force.

He revealed that should have been engaged during the attack on Garkida, the AirForce would have killed more civilians than Boko Haram.

It would be recalled that the Air Force had come under public criticism for just hovering over Garkida during the attack on the town, which left some civilians killed, without firing at the insurgents.

Speaking in Maiduguri on Sunday while commissioning a newly built hangar, the Chief of Air Staff, said should the AirForce had taken on the insurgents during the attack on Garkida, Adamawa State many civilians would have been lost.

He said the right decision was taken to avert a disaster as the AirForce would have killed more civilians than Boko Haram if the insurgents had been taken on.

He said: “We should pray for the souls of those that are departed. It was very unfortunate, we must remember that war is tragic in itself. There are tragic events you cannot rule out completely.

“AirForce was there quite right, but the pilots that were there used their rules of engagement to determine that dropping bomb over Garkida would have killed more innocent people than Boko Haram that went to attack Garkida.”

He added that: “After all we can trace where these people came out from, which was exactly what was done. In the night the ISL platform was on top and we were able to see where they recovered to and early in the morning an attack was carried out on them and they were neutralized; they would never be around to carry out an attack again.”

He said: “I think that makes more sense rather than just you have an aircraft overheard and you are not sure who and where is Boko Haram, are you going to drop bombs on children, women and civilians.

“No we do not do that, we have rules of engagement. Where it is convenient to drop bombs, we drop bombs, where we think it makes more sense to hold on and get the real criminals whom we are out to deal with and get them to where we can get them without hurting others we do that and that was what the pilots did and it was an excellent decision.”

The CAS while in Maiduguri also meant with the officers in a close door meeting to further plan on how to make a success of the current air expeditions on the insurgents in the North East.

-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) – From Mike SOGBOLA (North-East Correspondent):

The Nigerian Army on Wednesday handed over to Borno State Government 25 members of the terrorist group, Boko Haram, who allegedly denounced the organisation and surrendered to constituted authorities.

The Army gave them to the Borno State Government, the birthplace of Boko Haram in order for their rehabilitation and reintegration into the society.

The Coordinator, Operation Safe Corridor, Maj. Gen. Bamidele Shafa, who brought the alleged repentant insurgents from the neighbouring Republic of Niger, handed them over at the Bulunkutu Rehabilitation Center, Maiduguri.

Shafa disclosed that the 25 comprises of men, women and children who laid down their arms and surrendered to the Nigerien government.

He however declined to speak on the details of the arrangement with the Nigerien government but declared that all the 25 are Nigerians.

Speaking after taking delivery of the repentant Boko Haram members, the Borno State Commissioner of Women Affairs, Haija Zuwaira Gambo said the government would reunite them with their families.

She promised that the state government is ready to give them required skills and basic education that would make them useful to the society.

She said: “In Bulumkutu Rehabilitation Center, we will provide them with physical and social supports, we will feed them, give them clothes and gives them some basic of education.

“They were brought from Niger Republic and ours is to reunite them with their loved ones, I think it is right time we send a correct message out there, anyone can be a victim.

“There are different kind of people the military has brought, some are suspects arrested in the wrong place and at the wrong time, some also have been cleared by security agencies of any wrongdoing, so I will like to say that not everyone brought here by the military are ex-insurgents.”

Delta Govt Flags-Off 2019/2020 YAGEP Cycle With Orientation Workshop

-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –By Albert OGRAKA/Gertrude ONYEKACHUKWU-UTEH (Communication Officer):

Trainees of the Delta State Government’s Youth Agricultural and Entrepreneurs Programme (YAGEP) of the 2019/2020 Programme Cycle have been charged to take the training seriously in order to build themselves into entrepreneurs capable of sustaining their enterprises.

The Chief Job and Wealth Creation Officer, Prof Eric Eboh, gave the charge during a one-day Orientation Workshop organised for the 2019/2020 YAGEP trainees to flag-off their enrolment into the programme.

At the event held in Asaba, Prof Eric Eboh, congratulated the trainees for their success at the various stages of screening exercise before their successful enrolment into the programme.

He said the orientation workshop was packaged to enlighten them about the process, rules and guidelines of the 2019/2020 Cycle of YAGEP and to prepare them for a successful take-off as well as to ensure that they meet the condition for a successful participation in the programme.

Delivering his lecture tagged, “Presentation of 2019/2020 YAGEP Process and Guidelines,” he pointed out that the state government’s philosophy of initiating the Job Creation Scheme was to create a lasting legacy of a new generation of youth entrepreneurs who are well motivated, inspired, skilled and adequately enabled to become self-employed and business owners.

He said over 4,200 youths have benefited from STEP/YAGEP in the past 4 years with an additional 850 youths for the 2019/2020 Cycle, emphasizing that the 2019/2020 Cycle has more of Brown YAGEP than the Green YAGEP.

While stating that all beneficiaries of Brown YAGEP must have an active and verified agricultural enterprise which is put in suitable condition and is ready to take support, he explained that Green YAGEP beneficiaries must have verified suitable land space with unhindered access and secured tenure and verified source of regular water supply.

He pointed out that provision of YAGEP support packs will be done in stages as progression from one stage to the next stage is prerequisite to the release of support items in subsequent stage.

The various commodity enterprises for Brown YAGEP include Fish Production, Piggery, Poultry, and Crop Production such as Plantain, Cassava, Maize, Rice and Vegetable, while those for Green YAGEP are Poultry and Fish Production.

On his part, the Hon. Commissioner for Youth Development, Comrade Michael Egwunyenga tasked to develop the right mind-set of seeing the opportunity as a privilege to succeed in their chosen enterprise.

He pointed out that the level of success they achieve in their enterprise would depend on them and the attitude with which they handle it.

On his part, the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Youth Monitoring and Mentoring (DYMM), Mr Eddy Mekwuye, in his lecture, “The Role and Activities of Directorate of Youth Monitoring and Mentoring in Relation to YAGEP Trainees,” said the mandate of DYMM was to sustain the success recorded in the programme over the years.

He urged them to do the right thing at all times to ensure that the programme yields the desired results.

Responding separately, Monday Okpoho (Isoko North) in Poultry and Nnenna Okpaleke (Oshimili North) in Fish Production expressed their gratitude to the state government for the opportunity granted them to be part of the YAGEP programme, pledging to use the knowledge and support package to grow their businesses into enviable heights.

The highpoint of the event was the training tagged, “Farm records and Book-Keeping” delivered by the Resource Person, Mr Francis Aniye.

TONY NWAKA’S ‘SHADOWS AND NOTHINGS’: A 21ST CENTURY CLASSIC ROMANCE

SHADOWS AND NOTHINGS
(A Review)

As a journalist, I have had cause to review a number of books. And I must confess, reviewing this particular book was not a task but an admirable pleasure.

Maybe because I have an unbreakable bond with fiction.

Below is my most recent review of what you would agree is an amazing piece.

Just few minutes and you’re done!

TONY NWAKA’S ‘SHADOWS AND NOTHINGS’: A 21ST CENTURY CLASSIC ROMANCE YOU WOULDN’T WANT TO MISS!

SUMMARY
Tony Nwaka’s “Shadows and Nothings” is an intriguing prose that tells the story of two love birds who found themselves in an unpleasant twist of fate. Throughout the story until its end, they are torn between the options of drifting through the easy route by going their separate ways or having to fight the unseen but strong forces that threaten to tear them apart.

Julius is one not given to attending wedding ceremonies or parties of any sort because he saw the ceremonies as being overly cosmetic and somewhat boring. But obligation falls on him, when the younger sister to his best friend, Edolor was to wed. According to him, this was different.

And so having successfully dodged the church service, Julius excitedly finds his way to the reception venue at Lekki Phase 1. In the midst of the swimming crowd, his eyes notice a chocolate-skinned lady on long braids.

For the rest of the ceremony, Julius was not himself, as he lost both interest in the ceremony and appetite for his favourite meal of yam porridge, not until he finds an avenue to talk to the lady, whose beauty had stolen his heart at first sight.

She later introduces herself as simply Lauretta. He was quick enough to fish out his business card and hand over to her but the new golden fish was not as enthusiastic to hand him her phone number. She however promised to call him and within a flash of seconds, Lauretta was lost in the crowd.

The days that followed were as torturous as could be for Julius. He waited in anxious anticipation for Lauretta’s call which seemed not to come.

In desperation, he reaches out to his friend, Edobor, who rather than offer the needed assistance, reminds him of his ex, Evelyn who was more than willing to return.

Lauretta finally calls Julius after what seemed like eternity and they were able to go on a date. From the outset, Lauretta remained very vague about her background and who she really was.

Her weird conservative nature scared Julius but it seemed the more curious he was about this strange lady, the more drawn he was to her.

When things eventually begin to click between them, unsuspected forces set in. Julius’ ex-girlfriend, Evelyn having suffered a broken marriage, along with her mother, fights to get back into his life, holding on to the love they had both shared.

He also discovers that his new crush, Lauretha is the only child of the wealthy politician and one-time governor, Chief Alaba who happens to be a dreaded figure in the country.

Stories had gone round of how mean he could be and how he used his position to trample on the lives of people. Making the rounds was also the suspicion that himself and his family may be under some diabolical spell as a form of punishment for his wrongdoings.

Like they say, evil news has its way of travelling fast. Before long, Julius’ boss gets a wind of his affair with Lauretta and tactfully warns him to tread carefully. According to Mr. Adebayo, rather than gambling into such a sensitive area as marriage with Lauretta, he should pick a girl from any of the families he already knows very well.

Julius later disappointedly gets to know that his boss, Mr. Adebayo was having an affair with Ameze, Edobor’s younger sister: the same girl he was pushing him to marry.

In the midst of the pressure from his boss and friend, Julius also had to deal with the attempts being made by Evelyn to have him back by all means. She had tactfully lured him to a hotel where they both ended up in bed, thus complicating his situation.

While Julius privately battled with the forces that were trying to pull him from the love of his life, Lauretta also had her fair share of controversies.

She held on to the scariest secret of her life that had not ceased haunting her. She doubtless was in love with Julius but how could she explain to him that she had lost three previous relationships in the most mysterious way?

She fought the nightmare of explaining to Julius the fact that after her return from London, she had a love affair with Daniel, which was moving smoothly until they had sex. A week after the intimate affair, he mysteriously lost his job and that ended the relationship.

In case he chose to pass it off as mere coincidence, how would she bring herself to explain what transpired between herself and Clifford whom she dated a year later? As was expected, things were moving hitch free until he took her to bed. Exactly a week after that, he lost his mother in a ghastly motor accident, also bringing to a halt, the relationship.

She remained single for a long time and decided to try her luck with Shola, having waited for two years. Trying to play safe, she avoided sleeping with him until a year later. Seven days after they made out, he lost a multi-billion-naira road construction contract for which he had fulfilled all terms of the contract.

The thought of baring her mind of the worrisome experiences plagued her heart.
Fate however has always found a way of organizing circumstances.

Julius falls seriously ill and is bedridden at home. He reaches out to Lauretta to inform her of his sudden ailment and she promised to come over as soon as possible.

Julius, anxiously waiting for her arrival, gets a shocker as Evelyn walks into his bedroom unannounced. After a futile attempt to dismiss her, Lauretta walks in to meet the nurse attending to Julius.

The trio exchanged glances and Lauretta did not understand what was at play until Evelyn greeted her with a fixated gaze that spoke volumes.

After she left, Lauretta asked Julius about her identity and he explained it as a long story. It was not until her second visit that he told her the story behind the scene, which also served as a golden opportunity to bare her heart.

In tears, she recounted her ordeal, fearing he might decide to call off the relationship. At the end of her story, nibbling at her ear, Julius whispered, “My love, what matters is your ability to rise above these sad experiences and move on courageously with life. And you can trust that I’ll always be by your side to provide that comfort, care and companionship”.

His empathy brought fresh light upon her soul and she needed no further proof that he truly loved her.

Between that night and the next morning, they made love twice in his room and the countdown began for Lauretta. Days passed without much event except her mother’s constant dreams that spelt doom.

The seven days imagined ultimatum had barely passed when Evelyn stormed Lauretta’s supermarket to inform her that she was going to have a baby for Julius in eight months.

Lauretta thanked her for the information and fuming with anger, immediately tried putting a call across to Julius who failed to pick up. She had angrily driven across a few poles when he called back.

She shot it at him: “Julius, you’ve been sleeping with Evelyn!”

Before he could explain himself, he met with silence at her end, as she collided with a truck. All efforts to reach back to her proved abortive.

Tony Nwaka’s choice of ending can only be described as intriguing and one needs to read it for either a heartwarming climatic resolution or an unquenchable yearning for more.

REVIEW
‘Shadows and Nothings is an intense love story whose presentations resonate with virtually every reader’s experience.

To me, different from a handful of other love stories, Nwaka’s prose can be described as realistic. The protagonists, Julius Bassey and Lauretta Alaba were not separated from the harsh realities of life that usually surrounds love relationships.

The author was successful at deriding my

expectations from the outset. Many would often believe that love at first sight was usually a cramp of infatuation which does not last, especially if the object of attraction lies in physical appearance.

Surprise however sets in when a relationship that started off as mere flirt turns out to be solid enough for the partners to believe in and display their ability to withstand raging storms.

Effectively employing the power of description, the author was successful at mirroring the exact 21st century Nigerian society especially with regards to the craze for impression and visible show-off.

This was well painted in the pages describing the wedding reception of Edobor’s sister. From the flurry multi-coloured rays that had its source in the revolving stage lights that flashed across the hall, to the silk materials used for the décor down to the menu used to entertain the guest, everything spoke of class.

In this classic fictional piece, the author was able to, in an engaging manner bring the reader to terms with present realities of the African nation from where he wrote.

From x-raying the decadence that had come to beguile the nation, the book at the same time subtly and happily too, projects possible hope for a saner democratic system where the electorates can decipher between a sycophant and a true leader, thereby making informed electoral choices.

‘Shadows and Nothings’ was also successful at bringing to limelight, the often larger-than-life expectations relatives place on those in positions of authority and how they possess a sense of entitlement to public placements based on nothing other than shared bloodline.

The author uses the character of Daddy, Edobor’s father to send home some balance, with his view bothering on the fact that those in high profile positions deserve more sympathy and prayers than the very popular unfounded criticisms.

The story is told in seamless transition using clear and flawless expressions. As a writer myself, it often proves a difficult read going through a book laden with grammatical or what authors would easily spell off as typographical errors.

Quite commendable is the fact that in the entire261 a paged book, not a single grammatical error was detected; this speaks volume in describing the writing trajectory of the author.

Quite lucid were the connecting sentences and words. Nevertheless at very wide ranged intervals, the reader would have to consult a handy dictionary for added meaning. Again this also is an added advantage; after all what’s a good book if you can’t pick a few new vocabularies?

A critical look at the title, one naturally begins to wonder why the choice of ‘Shadows and Nothings’. But sifting through the pages, one cannot help but agree with the author.

There appear to be a lot of things and pursuits that we risk our lives to achieve and at the end of the day, we discover they were only shadows. It becomes rather a painful discovery when we realize that the essential object of our pursuit had been with us all along.

Evelyn would be in a more realistic position to explain this, especially when one reads her surrender-to-fate letter addressed to Julius.
Chief Alaba also had his share of shadow chasing when one considers the route of his political career and how he ended up having to live a ‘normal’ life after he lost the governorship election.

On a flip side however, Julius and Lauretta would tell you of a more intriguing side to ‘Shadows and Nothings’. The latter had for years lived in regrettable apprehension.

She was being haunted by the failed experiences of her past relationships. She feared the very worst as she delicately made way for Julius in her heart. Though a long road to discovery, she is meant to eventually find out that her fears could not have been better described than as ‘Shadows and Nothings’

Ever came across Francine Rivers’ ‘Redeeming Love’? Well, both books may have had very different plots but definitely have a shared central message: The redemptive power of love or what some may choose to describe as the triumph of love.

Yet to find a book cover that successfully combines creativity, aesthetics and story resonation as much as Nwaka’s ‘Shadows and Nothings’.

Beyond the black writings on brown pages that keep you smiling mischievously to yourself, the hardcover also proves to be an admirable addition to your reading shelf.

Described in one word, ‘Shadows and Nothings’ is class!

OPERATION RATTLE SNAKE 3: NAF DESTROYS BOKO HARAM STRUCTURES, LOGISTICS FACILITIES AT GARIN MALOMA, PARISU IN BORNO

0

-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) – From Mike SOGBOLA (South East Correspondent):

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), through the Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE, has destroyed some Boko Haram Terrorist (BHT) structures and logistics facilities at Garin Maloma and Parisu in the Sambisa Forest general area of Borno State. The air strikes were executed on 23 and 24 February 2020 as part of the ongoing Operation RATTLE SNAKE 3 based on credible intelligence reports indicating that elements of the BHTs that carried out the attack on Garkida in Adamawa State originated from camps within the Sambisa Forest.

Consequently, the ATF dispatched its attack aircraft to engage both locations, destroying several structures housing the terrorists as well as some of their logistics stores, which were seen engulfed in flames.

The NAF, operating in concert with surface forces, will sustain its air campaign to shape the battlespace in the Northeast for the effective conduct of further ground and air operations.
