Abuja Court Dismisses Case Against Nigerian Journalist Jones Abiri

0

New York, September 18, 2018–An Abuja magistrate’s court on Monday struck out a case against Jones Abiri, publisher and editor-in-chief of the newspaper, Weekly Source, Samuel Ogala, a lawyer who represents Abiri, told CPJ. The court ruled that it did not have jurisdiction over the state where the alleged wrongdoing took place, Ogala said. Abiri, who was detained without charge for over two years until his release last month, was accused of criminal intimidation for allegedly sending text messages demanding payment from two oil companies in Nigeria’s southern Bayelsa state, according to CPJ research. CPJ could not determine if prosecutors plan to file charges in Bayelsa state.

“Jones Abiri’s arrest, detention, and subsequent criminal prosecution is a stain on Nigeria’s press freedom record, but the court’s decision to end the case against him is an important and positive step,” said CPJ Africa Program Coordinator Angela Quintal. “The Nigerian government should seize this opportunity to take further action to improve conditions for journalists and ensure they can work without fear of arrest or prosecution.”

In a separate legal decision on September 13, a federal high court in Abuja held that the Department of State Security’s detention of Abiri was illegal and violated his fundamental human rights, Ogala told CPJ. The court ordered the federal government to pay Abiri 10.5 million naira (US$29,000) in damages and litigation fees, according to Ogala and Marshal Abubakar, another lawyer representing Abiri.

The Ministry of Information has rolled out different strategies over the past three years to get the populace to be in tune with the SMART Agenda of the Okowa-led government. The ministry was able to properly articulate all the projects and programmes of the various MDAs with the objective of propelling the people towards a common goal of prosperity for all Deltans.’’

There was no functional generator, the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) had disconnected the office complex because of outstanding bills, most office equipment and service vehicles were broken down and staff morale was low. It was therefore imperative that the work environment be improved if set objectives are to be attained.

“All MDAs would be required to patronise the Government Printing Press for all printing jobs. The Press would also be in position to print the State’s Yearly Calendar, Christmas Greeting Cards and Diaries which were hitherto carried out through contracts. The Press would be in a position to take up printing of documents from the general public, all MDAs including the State Polytechnics, the State University, Primary and Secondary Schools across the State. The plan is to facilitate the generation of funds by the Press as it would be commercialized.

“The construction of a modern secretariat complex for the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council is already at a high level of completion. His Excellency, the Governor has shown much commitment to the welfare of Journalists in the State. The Ministry, he noted, also coordinated the creation of a new brand identity for the state to herald a new Delta at 25-years and beyond. The new brand identity was designed to clearly define our beliefs, values and interests. Its target objective is to influence the perception of Deltans on how they see and understand themselves, their beliefs, needs, motives, interests and learning as a unique set of people.

“A holistic package of the State Brand Identity consist of the Seal of the State, the Crest of His Excellency, the Governor, the Crest of His Excellency, the Deputy Governor, the State Flag and the State Anthem (rebirth). Since the unveiling of the brand, it has to a great extent influenced the perception of Deltans on how they see and understand themselves, their beliefs, needs, and interests as a unique set of people. As a result of the re-branding of the state, His Excellency, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, won the ADVAN Award courtesy of the Advertising Association of Nigeria (ADVAN) for its brand building” he said.

On Delta Broadcasting Service, Warri and Asaba, he said “ On the assumption of office, it was discovered that the Delta Broadcasting Service, Asaba and Warri  were bedeviled with so many challenges despite efforts made by the previous administrations to provide broadcasting equipment for both television and radio arms. A meeting of the relevant stakeholders was convened by the Ministry which led to the constitution of a team to assess the challenges faced by the stations. The findings of the team guide the Ministry to strategised its plan to resolve the identified challenges in short, medium and long terms.

“So far, all the identified short term challenges have been resolved. These included getting, the contracting firm, COMFAX to open and handover the three-camera studio at the Warri Station that was locked up for so long, getting COMFAX to replace parts of the digital radio equipment affected by lightening in Warri Station, carrying out an audit of the contract to ascertain liabilities to the contractor and consultant with the intention to determine contract, resolving the problem caused by the bad antenna at Asaba and installing a new earthling systems to replace the non-functional ones in Warri, Asaba and Ubulu-Uku where non-existed.

“The Ministry was in the process of resolving the challenges classified as medium term when the flood disaster of Saturday 22nd July 2017 occurred and submerged the entire premises of Asaba Station including the offices, the digital and production studios and the transmission halls of the radio and television arms of the Service. The equipment and gadgets lost to the flood setback the effort of the government to put the station at the peak of broadcasting. The ministry had to take some urgent measures which His Excellency graciously approved to get the station back on air. Some of the equipment damaged by the flood including one of the transmitters of the radio arm has been repaired. Other crucial equipment that needs urgent attention and which are being plan for presently includes the UPS in Warri, Asaba and Ubulu-Uku, Radio Transmitter B in DBS Asaba and TV Transmitter A at Ubulu-Uku.

“Having restored the station back on air, the ministry proceeded to start resolving the challenges classified as medium term. Some of the medium term challenges already resolved include the replacement of the bad UHF-TV antenna which have been successfully installed and is being used to beam signals on the terrestrial in Asaba and its environs as well as to Ubulu-Uku for onward transmission to the entire state and beyond, a surge protector which was damaged beyond repairs has been replaced, the two existing Larcan Magnum Transmitters (5Kw) of the TV arm of the Asaba Station has been repaired, the character generating machine has been repaired, the Industrial AVR of the television arm has been repaired, a new feeder line that was at Ubulu-Uku which was not in use was brought to Asaba and installed to replace the bad one in Asaba, and the mast which had become dangerous for lack of maintenance was renovated and tensioned. The ministry also repaired and replaced some of the faulty digital studio lighting equipment at Delta Broadcasting Service, Asaba.”

The commissioner hinted that the ministry was presently in the process of upgrading the locally constructed television transmitter which is in use at DBS Warri from 1Kw to 5Kw to enable the signals which are only received in some parts of Warri to get to Ughelli, Sapele, Ozoro and beyond.

“Though the digital switch over program is on, it may take another one to three years to completely get the populace to key in and for the National Broadcasting Commission to shut down transmission on the Ultra High Frequency (UHF)”, he said, adding,.”It is important to note here that majority of Deltans still depend on signals from the Ultra High Frequency (UHF). The ministry therefore wants to keep up broadcasting on the terrestrial to ensure that government activities are effectively communicated to Deltans.”

He also revealed that a 33KVA lines has been provided at Asaba and Ubulu-Uku  to resolved the issue of power supply which has rendered the station ineffective for a long time.

On the third phase activities planned as long term measures to reposition the station, Mr Ukah said that the ministry targets the accomplishment of full digitalization as earlier earmarked before the flood. The ministry has entered into an agreement with Pinnacle Communications limited, the signal distributor assigned by the Federal Government of Nigeria through the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to handle the Digital Switch On (DSO) in Delta State.

Uduaghan Hails N’Delta Youths On Nation Building, Unveils Plans For Isoko Youths

Immediate past Governor of Delta State and APC 2019 Delta South Senatorial hopeful, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan has said that Niger Delta youth leaders were becoming articulate and active contributors to nation building.

Uduaghan was a Special Guest of Honour at the maiden Isoko Youth Summit organized by the Comrade Ovie Umuakpo-led Executive of the Isoko National Youth Association (INYA) at the Civic Centre in Oleh at the weekend.

Dr. Uduaghan who is a big fan of progressive-minded youths used the opportunity to speak to Isoko youth on the theme: “Retooling the Isoko Youth for Good Governance and Political Participation.”

He remarked that he had always been an admirer of the Isoko nation, especially the academically-inclined Umuakpo-led INYA, who had won his heart via an interview program on one of the national television.

He hailed the Isoko youth leader’s vibrancy on the said program and admitted that Niger Delta youth leaders were becoming articulate and active contributors to nation building.

The former Governor stated that Isoko youths must enthrone education in their activities if they wished to be involved in the engine room of governance; adding that the dynamics has tilted away from “deve” and violent arm-twisting of government or oil firms so as to get humongous compensations and contracts to service expensive lifestyles.

Continuing, he made a case for more educated Niger Delta Youths to be at the helm of youth groups as their knowledge come very handy in partnering with developmental initiatives for the economic advancement of their area. He also tasked them to acquire requisite skills that would make them employable.

“Yes, the oil companies might be at your backyard but if you’re unemployable, you leave them no choice but to hire competent hands from other areas. But when you are skilled, even the government would join in your cause because no father wants his son to suffer in the midst of plenty.”

The APC Delta South Senatorial Hopeful anchored his speech on his plans for youths when he emerges Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, in 2019.

“Our youth must strive to be peaceful and united in their agitation. Peace gives birth to good children any day. By God’s grace, when the people of Delta South give me their senatorial mandate in the next election, I will largely involve our youths in the security of our communities as well as oil installations therein. It would be a win-win for our youths who would be paid for securing a peaceful business environment for investors and companies to operate optimally. This will run concurrently with the 5% community ownership of industries that I am proposing in our area. As a crisis manager, I know that once communities have a sense of ownership in the operations of companies, they will protect their facilities jealously.”

Isoko Nation Advocates For Rotation Of Delta South Senatorial Seat

0

-By Michael EKOKORUWE:

The President General of Isoko Development Union (IDU), High Chief Iduh Amadhe says, rotation of the senate position in South Senatorial district between Isoko, Itsekiri and Ijaw ethnic nationalities, will foster equity, justice and fair play in the actualization of true democracy in the present political dispensation.

Amadhe made the statement during the visit of Itsekiri leaders to Isoko development union, held at the National secretariat Oleh, Isoko South local government area of Delta State.

He stated that a joint meeting of traditional rulers, the political class and community leaders from Ijaw, Itsekiri and Isoko be put together to adopt the former rotational method of the South Senatorial seat, which according to him is the solution to the present fourth and fifth agenda of occupying the Senatorial seat. Amadhe who condemned such agenda also described it as repugnant, political brigandage and alien to natural justice and equity.

Amadhe maintained that a maximum of two terms for each of the three ethnic groups of Isoko, Ijaw and Itsekiri for the senatorial seat, be strictly adhered through agreement and published communiqué.  While analyzing the narrative of how the senatorial seat has been, Amadhe urged the leaders of Itsekiri to interact with Ijaw leaders before the joint meeting of the three ethnic groups.

Earlier, Chief Mene Brown while speaking on behalf of Itsekiri leaders commended patrons and leaders of Isoko development union for the warm reception, stating that HRM Ogieme Ikenwoli, the Olu of Warri sent them for the interactive visit. He said Isoko, Ijaw and Itsekiri senatorial seat is for the three ethnic groups that demands planning and mutual understanding, which according to him informed the visit.

Chief Mene Brown condemned a situation of fighting for the senatorial seat by the three ethnic groups and advised on the rotational method not on political party basis but on ethnic nationality basis.

He said any senator occupying the seat represents the three ethnic groups, noting that each ethnic nationality should support the other during elections. He posited that the three ethnic groups are to communicate and exchange ideas for a common goal.

In attendance were Chief Dennis Etaluku, Dr. Chief Idodo Umeh, Sir Simeon Efenudu, the women wing and executive of Isoko development union, president generals from various Isoko communities among others.

NYSC Exemption Certificate Brouhaha: Kemi Adeosun’s Resignation Letter As Minister Of Finance

0

14th September, 2018

His Excellency

Muhammadu Buhari

President, Federal Republic of Nigeria

State House

Aso Villa

Abuja

Dear Excellency,

Let me commence by thanking you profusely for the honour and privilege of serving under your inspirational leadership. It has been a truly rewarding experience to learn from you and to observe at close quarters your integrity and sense of duty.

I have, today, become privy to the findings of the investigation into the allegation made in an online medium that the Certificate of Exemption from National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) that I had presented was not genuine. This has come as a shock to me and I believe that in line with this administration’s focus on integrity, I must do the honourable thing and resign.

Your Excellency, kindly permit me to outline some of the background to this matter. I was born and raised in the United Kingdom, indeed my parental family home remains in London. My visits to Nigeria up until the age of thirty-four (34) were holidays, with visas obtained in my UK passport. I obtained my first Nigerian passport at the age of thirty-four (34) and when I relocated there was debate as to whether NYSC Law applied to me. Upon enquiry as to my status relating to NYSC, I was informed that due to my residency history and having exceeded the age of thirty (30), I was exempted from the requirement to serve. Until recent events, that remained my understanding.

On the basis of that advice and with the guidance and assistance of those, I thought were trusted associates, NYSC were approached for documentary proof of status. I then received the certificate in question. Having never worked in NYSC, visited the premises, been privy to nor familiar with their operations, I had no reason to suspect that the certificate was anything but genuine. Indeed, I presented that certificate at the 2011 Ogun State House of Assembly and in 2015 for Directorate of State Services (DSS) Clearance as well as to the National Assembly for screening. Be that as it may, as someone totally committed to a culture of probity and accountability I have decided to resign with effect from Friday, 14th September, 2018.

Your Excellency, It has been an exceptional privilege to have served our nation under your leadership and to have played a role in steering our economy at a very challenging time. I am proud that Nigeria has brought discipline into its finances, has identified and is pursuing a path to long term sustainable growth that will unlock the potential in this great economy. Under your leadership, Nigeria was able to exit recession and has now started to lay the foundations for lasting growth and wealth creation. Repositioning this huge economy is not a short term task and there are no short cuts, indeed there are tough decisions still to be made but I have no doubt that your focus on infrastructural investment, revenue mobilisation and value for money in public expenditure will deliver growth, wealth and opportunity for all Nigerians.

I thank His Excellency, the Vice President and my colleagues in the Federal Executive Council for the huge pleasure and honour of working with them. I also thank most specially, the team in the ‘Finance Family’ of advisers and heads of agencies under the Ministry of Finance. Your Excellency, this group of committed Nigerians represent a range of backgrounds, ethnicities and ages. They have worked well above and beyond the call of duty to support me in the tasks assigned. The diversity in my team and their ability to work cohesively to deliver reforms, convinces me that Nigeria has the human capital required to succeed.

Your Excellency, let me conclude by commending your patience and support, during the long search for the truth in this matter. I thank you again for giving me the honour of serving under your leadership, it is a rare privilege, which I do not take for granted. As a Nigerian and committed progressive, I appreciate you for your dogged commitment to improving this nation.

Please be assured, as always, of my highest regards and best wishes

Illegal Detention: Court Orders DSS To Pay Journalist, Abiri N10

0

A Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Nnamdi Dimgba has ordered the Department of State Services (DSS) to pay Mr. Jones Abiri, the sum of N10 million being damages for his illegal detention.

Abiri, a Bayelsa-based journalists and publisher of online portal, crackreporers.com and Weekly Source newspaper was detained illegally for two years, after a trump up accusation by the DSS of involvement in militancy.

After gross violation of his constitutional rights he was however arraigned in July following widespread condemnation and released on bail.

Ruling on the application by Abiri that he should be paid the sum of N200 million as compensation for the illegal detention and torture, the court condemned in totality the action of the DSS.

It therefore ordered that the sum of N10 million should be paid to the journalist.

In his ruling, Dimgba said his detention for two years was equal in effect to a conviction which was wrong.

He explained that the government should have arraigned him and prayed the court not to grant him bail.

He said the excuse that he was detained for national interest was untenable.

MEMBERS OF ISOKO SOUTH ARTISANS COUNCIL URGED TO COLLECT THEIR PVC

0
-By Michael EKOKORUWE:

Isoko South chapter of the Delta State Artisan’s Council members have been urged to collect their PVC as it is the ticket to vote the right candidate of their choice.

The chairman of the chapter, Comrade Ewhre E. Richard made the call during the general monthly meeting of the union held at Oleh, Isoko South local government area of Delta State.

Comrade Ewhre charged members of the union that have registered to collect their PVC and ensure that others are informed as well. He stated that artisans will vote for credible candidates that know the pain of the common man and not political party, adding that members with educational background are qualified to contest for any position.

The chairman said, the 2018 artisans week celebration scheduled to hold by November, will focus on orphans and the less privileged in the society. Ewhre decried poor electricity in Isoko land, which according to him has affected the daily work of hair dressers, barbers, tailors, welders, business centers and others even as members at the end of every month pay for electricity bills.

He called on staffs of BEDC in Isoko to have a change of attitude and ensure that the light is stable to satisfy their customers. He maintained that paying for light bills every month which is not availability for use, calls for serious concern.

Comrade Ewhre commended the State governor, Senator Dr.Ifeanyi Okowa for infrastructural development in Delta State even as he appealed for Isoko South artisans to be considered for employment in the state and federal level. He said, artisans are among the grass root electorates that politicians commit to winning their election.

The chairman also called on President Mohamadu Buhari to find lasting solution to the incessant killing in the country so that Nigeria can be safe for all to live in, especially during the 2019 general election.

AKWA IBOM: My Administration Has Done A Lot, Let APC Guber Candidates Show What They Have Done -Gov. Udom Emmanuel

0

Governor Udom Emmanuel has urged aspirants showing interest in his seat to first tell Akwa Ibom people how they are making good use of their current public offices to the benefit of the people of the state.

Speaking with Government House reporters shortly on arrival from official engagements at the Ibom International Airport, Governor Emmanuel dismissed the All Progressives Congress in the state, saying they don’t have sound people with any genuine agenda for the state.

Apparently ruing the failure of the NDDC under the headship of Mr Nsima Ekere to execute any tangible project in Akwa Ibom in the last three years, Governor Emmanuel quipped, “If those they want to bring control budgets of nine states and all the IOCs and you are in Akwa Ibom, you’ve been here over how many years now, we’ve not seen even a kilometre of road commissioned with such mongoose sum of money, so what will they now do when they pledged to do 4 years?

He dismissed the promise of a one term by the APC promoters, saying, “in four years, how many investors will you talk to? So how many of those factories will arrive for our people to work in?”

He urged his opponents to, “tell Akwa Ibom people what are they going to do for Akwa Ibom. I have never heard that for once.”

The governor said anyone who controls all the monies of the International Oil Companies, two percent of their budgets plus budgets of 9 states and you don’t have a kilometre of road to show. Even the village you come from, there is no transformer, So what magic will you perform?”

Governor Emmanuel said his administration can show a lot that he has done in the state in the last three years, and it would be appropriate to also have a glimpse of the programmes and ideas they are bringing to the table.

“It is not a time for story telling. Let’s look at whether people are coming to loot the little that we have or they are actually coming to add value,” Mr. Emmanuel added.

The governor who was impressed with the number of aspirants gunning for the country’s number one plum job on the platform of his party, said it was an indication that the PDP was the most sought after party which has the solutions to the myriads of problems plaguing the country.

“I want to believe, at the end of the day, whoever we will bring out as a candidate should have a whole lot of solutions to the problems in this country.

He pointed out that the Government of Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa was succeeding in using agricultural value chain to affect the lives of Deltans as the cluster model is yielding desired impacts in transforming the agricultural landscape and agricultural prosperity in the state.

At Deghele YAGEP rice farm cluster that was established in 2018 in Sapele Local Government Area, the chief job creation officer, Prof. Eboh disclosed that the YAGEP rice farm occupied an expanse of forty-two hectares of land.

While conducting the media team round the farm where harvesting and threshing of rice was taking place by the 21 YAGEPreneurs trained in rice production, Prof. Eboh noted that there is room for expansion in subsequent cycles.

Speaking at the event, tagged International Day of Charity, she said the charity day was instituted by the United Nations on September 5 to commemorate the death of Mother Theresa who worked tirelessly to reach out to the poor, noting that the event was set aside to increase solidarity, social responsibility, volunteerism and public support.

She said the event was not actually to make noise but to raise public awareness on the need for charity work, noting that being alive does not necessarily mean ‘we are the best but what we do today is what we will reap tomorrow.’

For her, it is not only the rich that should give help but every Nigerian should give as giving is a spirit that should be imbibed by all human beings.

The governor’s wife who has been involved in charity works across Delta state, some of which were the free eye care given to Deltans who had suffered from cataract and other eye challenges, said the event was an opportunity to cash in to contribute ‘our quota to humanity.’

She said her driving force in all humanitarian works was a section of the Bible, Matthew Chapter 25: 35-36 which quotes “I was hungry and ye gave me meat, I was thirsty and ye gave me drink, I was a stranger and ye took me in, naked and ye clothed me, I was in prison and ye came to me.”

She commended the management of the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, under the leadership of Dr. Victor Osiatuma, whom she said admitted and treated many of the patients without demanding for payment prior to attending to their health challenges.

Chief Medical Director of the FMC, Dr. Victor Osiatuma, commended Dame Okowa for her charity works across the state, saying she has been instrumental in assisting poor patients in the hospital.

He said she has been putting smiles on the faces of people who had lost hope through many of her programmes, among which are the sickle centres, the free health programmes and her charity works.

Last year, specifically, September 5, 2017, the governor’s wife also, through the pet project, 05 initiative, spent over N2.3million to bail out 13 patients who also could not pay their medical bills at the same hospital.

Those discharged in 2017 but detained for being indebted to the hospital included Chukwunyem Esther, N310, 850, Chukwudi Joshua, N135, 700, Okolie Ifeanyi, N439, 200, Ubong Kingsley, N307, 050, Onwugbolu Sunday, N221, 000, Oki John, 422, 000, Obi Jerry, N216, 350, Obianke Onyisi-Ken, N171, 850, Okoh Patrick, N597, 700 and Edhu Ejiro, N160, 850 with a 20 per cent discount of N596, 510.

Responding, a beneficiary of the September 11, 2018 world charity day, Mrs. Promise Lazarus, expressed happiness over the gesture, noting that the governor’s wife, the people of Delta state and the management of the Federal Medical Centre have been magnanimous to her and other patients.

TOMPOLO’S STOLEN N10 BILLION PROPERTY: GROUP WANTS NAVAL PERSONNEL INVOLVED BROUGHT TO BOOK

0

The Niger Delta Indigenous Movement For  Radical Change (NDIMRC) has called on Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship, NNS Delta, Commodore Ibrahim Dewo not to leave any stone unturned in bringing to book the Naval Personnel involved in the alleged stealing of N10 Billion property of ex-militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo.

Recalled that three Navy Personnel deployed to protect the facilities at Tompolo’s Waterfront and Jetty, near Chevron Clinic, Edjeba, Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State, confiscated on the order of a Federal High Court by the  Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, were caught, July 22, 2018, carting away a Transformer from the premises with civilian accomplices.

NDIMRC in a Press Statement signed by its President, Nelly Emma, Secretary, John Sailor and Public Relations Officer (PRO), Stanley Mukoro, demanded for for  a proper probe into the case.

According to the Press Statement; ” First and foremost, we want to commend the Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship, NNS Delta, Commodore Ibrahim Dewo for his prompt response to the case of the looting of the property of Tompolo by some Navy Personnel. But we want to implore him to do more by ensuring that  those involved in the criminal act are made to face the music. There should be no hiding place for those giving the Navy a bad name. The law must be allowed to take its full course. We are not going to rest until  the perpetrators are exposed and tried properly. Justice must be done to this case “.

“We want to let Commodore Ibrahim Dewo to know that property worth over N15 Billion were in the premises of Tompolo when they were seized by the Federal, this is known to the two former Commanders of the NNS Delta. All efforts made by one of the younger brothers of Tompolo to prevail on the former Commanders to prevent the looting of the property proved abortive as these former Commanders turned hostile to all those connected to Tompolo, they refused to be advised on the need to prevent the stealing of the seized property and they encouraged Naval men to feast on the property. If the former Commanders worked the way Commodore Dewo is working, the looting would have been checked. We are impressed with the efforts of the current Commander of the NNS Delta who  has been doing his best and working round the clocks since  his resumption  to safeguard the confiscated property and we want to urge him to take it upon himself to make sure that those involved in the stealing of the property do not go unpunished”, the group stated.

The group also said that; ” We sincerely appreciate the efforts of Commodore Dewo in safeguarding the Property of Tompolo since his resumption. We want to plead with him to do everything possible to ensure that the case is not swept under the carpet. The three identified suspects, Lance Corporal Usman Shaibu, Staff Sergeant P.O. Ekong, Sergeant L.S. Elijah and those that aided and abetted them be made to face the music, there should be no cover up of this case. We trust that the hardworking boss of NNS Delta will never support criminality by his men as our investigation revealed that the  Navy is actually dealing with the situation”.

“We made bold to say that the looted properties were acquired legally by Tompolo through  hard work and no efforts should be spared in recovering them from those who stole them and the perpetrators punished. We urge the Commander of the NNS Delta, Commodore Dewo to take this issue to the Chief of Naval Staff  for thorough justice to be done”, the group added.

OPINION>>UDUAGHAN: A MAN IN A CRISIS OF CONSCIENCE, SAYS DELTA PDP

0

The Delta State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has dismissed as a “pipedream” the statement credited to a former Governor of the State, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, that the APC “will wrest power from the PDP” in 2019.

In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Dr. Ifeanyi Michael Osuoza, the party said that the boast by Uduaghan was “completely laughable” and “further proof that the former Governor still has not learnt any political lesson from the humiliating defeat he suffered at the hands of then Senator Ifeanyi Okowa at the PDP primaries in 2014, when he (Uduaghan) used the full apparatus of the State to sponsor and support another candidate. As Governor, Dr Okowa has endeared himself to majority of Deltans with his stellar achievements in all sectors of the economy. They cannot wait to re-elect him come 2019.”

According to Osuoza, “when it comes to politics and elections in Delta State, Dr. Uduaghan should realise that he is less than a featherweight. Does he even know how he became Governor in the first place? In 2019, we shall ensure that he is exiled into political oblivion once and for all.”

The PDP spokesman referred to Uduaghan’s assertion that the PDP “has never protected its own” as the ranting of a drowning man clutching at every available straw for political survival and relevance.

“Governor Uduaghan was actually referring to himself when he made that statement. This was exactly what he did when he was leader of the party as governor. Out of sheer arrogance and vaulting ambition, he estranged many PDP members with his bad leadership style and worked hard to frustrate and impoverish many of them.

“It was part of his treacherous plan to undermine and usurp the position of our political leader, Chief James Onanefe Ibori, and create his own political empire. Dr. Uduaghan left behind a party that was fractured and near disintegration. But thank God that under Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, the PDP in Delta State has regained its status as a united, cohesive and formidable force.”
According to the Publicity Secretary, Dr. Uduaghan’s claim that “I don’t expect Ibori to think I betrayed him,” is the statement of a traitor facing the torment of his own soul. The party berated the former Governor for biting the fingers that fed him, adding that Dr Uduaghan is a man in a crisis of conscience.

Volkswagen Signs MOU With Nigerian Govt To Develop Automotive Hub

0
  • Volkswagen has identified Nigeria as a country with significant potential for the growth in the new vehicle market
  • The Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) to develop a joint vision to secure the development of Nigeria as an automotive hub
  • An enabling policy framework that facilitates this vision to be developed based on commercial viability

Abuja/Wolfsburg – During the visit of the Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel to Nigeria, Volkswagen took the opportunity to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the presence of both the Chancellor and His Excellency, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja to develop a joint vision for an automotive hub in that country. The Head of Volkswagen Sub-Saharan Region, Thomas Schaefer signed the agreement on behalf of Volkswagen with the Nigeria’s Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment,  Dr. Okey Enelamah.

The Volkswagen Brand thus took the next step in expanding its influence and presence in Sub-Saharan Africa. This comes a day after the signing of the MoU in Ghana in the presence of Chancellor Merkel and Vice President of Ghana, Mahamudu Bawumia whereby Volkswagen committed to set up a vehicle assembly and conduct a detailed feasibility study for the development of an integrated Mobility Solution in Ghana.

In the MoU, Volkswagen undertakes to implement a phased approach in relation to the assembly of vehicles, initially from assembly kits with the long term view of establishing Nigeria as an automotive hub on the West Coast of Africa. This will include establishing a training academy in conjunction with the German Government, which will train the initial employees. The academy will also provide broader technical training in automotive skills. It is also intended that a comprehensive Volkswagen vehicle and service network is developed in the country subject to commercial viability.

In turn the Nigerian Government undertakes to accelerate the approval of the Nigerian Automotive Policy, currently under consideration. This includes the gradual transition from the importation of used cars to the manufacture and distribution of new passenger vehicles.

The Government has committed to providing a conducive legislative environment that will encourage the manufacturing of motor vehicles in Nigeria.

Nigeria’s Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment,  Dr. Okey Enelamah, who signed on behalf of his government, said: “The MoU is a major step in our walk towards the development of the automotive industry to achieve its potential contribution to the continuous economic development of the country.”

“We believe in the strategic and catalytic role of the automotive industry in the diversification of the Nigerian economy and we remain committed to encouraging and partnering with relevant stakeholders, especially investors and friends of Nigeria. Our overall objective is to restore assembly and develop local content, thereby creating employment, acquiring technology and reducing pressure on the country’s balance of payment, ” added Dr. Enelamah

Thomas Schaefer commented: “This week Volkswagen has been able to demonstrate with conviction that it is serious about its intentions in Sub-Saharan Africa. We are well placed to become a dominant player in Africa, as the continent continues to stabilise and develop economically, as the last frontier for the automotive industry.”

Volkswagen has a fully-fledged manufacturing facility in South Africa, and assembles vehicles in Kenya, Algeria as well as in Rwanda, in conjunction with an Integrated Mobility Solution offering Community Car Sharing and shortly to be launched Ride Hailing.

Under its TRANSFORM 2025+ brand strategy, Volkswagen is strengthening the regions and focusing on new up-and-coming markets. Alongside North and South America as well as China, the Sub-Sahara region plays an increasingly important role. Although the African automotive market is comparatively small today, the region could develop into an automotive growth market of the future.

Volkswagen will continue to grow its importer network in Sub-Saharan Africa and explore other opportunities for growth and development. As a next step, exploratory talks are being held with the Government of Ethiopia.

“We are only starting with our initiatives in Africa and will continue to develop sales and service networks where applicable. We are also looking at future assembly locations to determine if the markets have the potential and the necessary policy frameworks to be developed, to accommodate vehicle assembly,” added Schaefer.

Thomas Schaefer is also the President of the Association of African Automobile Manufacturers and stated in his capacity as the President that he believed that it was important that a Pan African Auto pact be developed to promote and grow a connected Auto Industry in Africa.

“Africa’s time is now and with good alignment between the African countries with automotive aspirations we can create intra African trade and a Win-Win situation for all,” concluded Schaefer.

Journalists Must Be Respected – Osita Biose … As Ikeogwu, Ochei, Oyowe, Gbemudu Ask Government To Stop Impunity Against Practitioners

-By: Patrick Ochei:

The Delta State Capital Territory, Asaba, was today, August 30th, 2018, agog as journalists representing different media houses filed out in their numbers to protest against what they termed incessant harassment of journalists in line with the national executive council’s demand.

During the protest which took off at the Ministry of Information’s secretariat along Summit Road, a former Chairman Emeritus of the Delta State Council of NUJ, Comrade Osita Biose was on hand and duly addressed members of the Union.

Biose who maintained that journalists must be respected in view of their constitutional responsibility of disseminating information and setting agenda for society, called on government at all levels to protect these rights of Practitioners.

He affirmed that no matter the provocation, no authority or highly placed individual has a right to arrest, detain or violently attack a journalist without first exploring the options of mediation, dialogue or redress through the court.

The highly revered unionist, however advised journalists to equally carry themselves with respect and do their job with utmost diligence, adding that the politicians who sometimes use them to achieve their personal results didn’t attend better schools than them.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of NUJ in the state, Comrade Michael Ikeogwu gave a stern warning to the federal government to stop impunity against journalists.

Ikeogwu posited that media Practitioners cannot continue to be intimidated, molested and detained while doing their job.

He however, called on security agencies and other members of society who indulge in maltreating and harassing journalists to desist forthwith or have the Union to contend with.

In his submission, the Vice Chairman of the State Council, Comrade Patrick Ochei averred that the Nigerian constitution guarantees the freedom of press and as such, the government must seek to protect Practitioners from harm’s way.

He gave instances with the arrest and detention of a colleague in Delta, Prince Daniel Ekiugbo by the DSS for several months; as well as the detention of the Bayelsa based journalist, Jones Abiri for two years at the DSS custody, maintaining that another horrific case at hand was the demolition of the Fresh FM station at Ibadan in Oyo State.

Moreover, while the Secretary of the Council, Comrade Churchill Oyowe believes that the freedom of the press is just a lip service assurance, the Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Comrade Patricia Gbemudu said that enough is enough of the injustices meted out to journalists who are indeed members of the fourth estate of the realm.

They both demand that the government of the day should not take Nigerians back to the draconian days, but should respect and synergize with journalists in the interest of progress and development of the nation.

It was a worthwhile venture as members of the noble profession had a field day, expressing their grievances and calling on the public to join forces with the NUJ to fight the injustices against journalists.

While journalists in Delta protested, the same simultaneously went on nationwide to collectively press home these demands that were anchored on solidarity.

Delta @ 27: Bashorun Askia Greets Gov. Okowa, Deltans ***Assures Better Deals For Deltans, Appeals For Peaceful Co-existence

As Deltans at home and in the Diaspora celebrate the 27th Anniversary of the creation of Delta State, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bashorun (Hon.) Askia Ogieh JP, says the state has recorded more gains than loses since its creation on August 27, 1991.

The Executive Director (Finance and Administration) at the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), who lauded Governor Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa for ensuring sustainable peace and development across the three senatorial districts in the state, explained that these strides had led to the growing support of all Deltans for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Bashorun Askia, who promised better deals for Deltans also urged them not to relent in their total support to the administration of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa so as to enjoy more dividends of democracy in the years ahead.

According to him, “We have recorded a lot of achievement in terms of political and socio-economic transformation in the greater part of the years since the state’s creation, spanning from the visionary governance of Chief James Onanefe Ibori who set down the development template and platform for the transformation of this state till date.

“Today, Delta State is tagged as one of the fastest growing states amongst the comity of states in the country due to the sustained landmark development feat of successive PDP led administrations which have taken Delta state to both national and international limelight.”

He therefore appealed to Deltans to remain steadfast in their support of the people oriented government policies and initiatives of incumbent Governor Ifeanyi Okowa by maintaining the existing ethnic peace and harmony in the state to attract more investors and development to the state.

“What the people of Delta state crave for now is sustainable peace to fast-track the development process being driven by His Excellency Governor Ifeanyi Okowa through job and wealth creation, agricultural reforms, road infrastructure, urban-rural transformaion, peace building as well as education and health for all Deltans.

“The successful hosting of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Senior Athletics Championships in Asaba from August 1-5 2018, has further confirmed beyond all doubts that Delta State is indeed a home of peace, security and hospitality.

“Deltans are happy today because they elected a God-fearing and humble man with the Midas touch, whose only goal is to improve on the lives of the people by delivering on his electoral pledges. That is also why they have vowed to re-elect him for a second time because the projects and programmes of the governor were campaigning for him ahead of the 2019 general elections”, Bashorun Askia confirmed.

CAA Asaba 2018: We Succeeded Because We Were Determined To Prove Skeptics Wrong –Navy Commodore Omatseye Nesiama (Rtrd)

-By Albert OGRAKA:

Immediate past Technical Director of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and Head of the Security sub-committee in the recently concluded African Senior Athletics Championship, Navy Commodore Omatseye Nesiama (rtrd) has said the tournament which held at the Stephen Keshi stadium, Asaba, was hitch-free because of the synergy that existed between his committee and all security, paramilitary and safety agencies in Delta state.

The IAAF licensed Athletes representative, who said the successful security measures was not devoid of certain challenges, noted that the synergy had helped in tightening all loose ends from the time of arrival of athletes to their time of departure from Asaba.

“I thank God that from beginning to the end, we didn’t get any record of security related issues. We prepared very hard for it and I’m very happy that the security strategy worked. I engaged all the security agencies, both the military and paramilitary despite the fact that a sub-committee was set up, I expanded the subcommittee to include every security and paramilitary agencies as well as the fire service, red cross and some other safety agencies and it became an all encompassing body.”

Speaking to newsmen in Asaba, Navy Commodore Nesiama (rtrd) also said the feat recorded by his committee has proved both local and international skeptics wrong about security concerns throughout the Championship and especially those who claim that the Niger-Delta region is unsafe.

“I have traveled round competitions based on my position as Technical Director, so I know how these things are done. I know the expectations and particularly because of our own clime and terrain, there was every need for us to prove the skeptics wrong that Niger-Delta isn’t safe, a place where they get kidnapped and so on and so forth.”

Navy Commodore Nesiama (rtrd), who is a member of CAA International Technical Officials Panel and CAA Technical and Competitions Commission, however said “the water tank incident which occured towards the end of the event was not a security incidence, hence the main goal of the security sub-committe was the planning strategy that ensured no life was lost and we achieved it.”

On the effective management of the crowd within and outside the Stephen Keshi Stadium, venue of the athletics tourney, Navy Commodore Nesiama (rtrd) noted that tact and security intelligence were deployed to curtail the surge and with the help of trained private security personnel, the crowd was carefully managed according to acceptablespecification.

“I used the CCTV cameras to access both inside and outside the stadium and when we saw the surge we decided to allow people in from the entrance point to decongest the main gate. And when I now realized that the stadium was full to capacity, the only option was to now work on the safety aspect of our job which was to inform those outside that the stadium is filled up to capacity. We adviced those that were outside to return home or nearby viewing centers to watch the event which has be granted rights to be broadcast live. So they can be part of it without necessarily being inside the stadium.

“We also announced that at the end of the event every one inside the stadium should remain seated while the security personnel, especially the private security agencies/personnel would manage the crowd to leave in an orderly manner and every one will be evacuated in a short time and all these were part of our plan and thank God everything went well.”

Speaking on some of the challenges he faced with the athletes, he said the security sub-committee having planned for unforseen circumstances, they were ready to tackle such situations.

“When you plan and everything works perfectly well, there’s something wrong and when you plan, you should be ready to hear some little errors. So based on that we experienced one or two challenges. When such situations come, we consider it not out of our power and try to tackle it as much as we can.

“For example events like this requires fewer hotels than what we actually got, which provided extra challenge. If we had hotels that could accommodate between 500 and 1000 guests, we would have proudly located everybody in one or two, especially the International or foreign guests. It would have given us more consideration of security, less number of personell and reduced the cost of transporting or escorting them to and fro in their areas of activity.”

When asked to comment on the recently reported alleged vandalization of facilities at the Stephen Keshi stadium, Navy Commodore Nesiama (rtrd) said: “My committee’s work ended with the last delegates leaving the country. While the championship lasted, our security was all over the place and after the championship, we knew that the collapsed fence will provide an entry into the stadium, if not protected. We made a recommendation that there will be need to quickly secure the stadium in our reports but we dont know if that report has gotten out or not.”

The private security consultant therefore appealed to the state government to ensure that the stadium and its facilities are maintained to sustain the good works of the Delta state governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa.

“The stadium and its facilities have to be maintained. We need to enhance the security of the stadium and we need to restrict access to certain sensitive areas to ensure that the facilities that people saw during the championship are still there to make the place beautiful.”

On his part, Rt. Hon Oborevwori who is also the National Treasurer of Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures in Nigeria, implored the Muslim Ummah to see the period as time to render selfless service to God and humanity.

“Let this period also be used to pray for our beloved country and our leaders at all levels. Let us work collectively for the progress of our Country. We should continue to pray for peace and harmony in our nation, especially now that we are approaching election year.”

In his message, Bashorun (Hon.) Askia Ogieh JP, re-emphasized on the need for Nigerians to see themselves first as a united people with the common idea of peaceful co-existence and development rather than clinging onto illusions of disunity which does no one any good.

“I wish all Muslims in Delta State, Nigeria and the world a happy Eid-el-Kabir celebrations. May this celebration further help to usher peace, joy, progress and good governance to this great nation.”

China ‘Likely’ Training Pilots To Target US –Pentagon Report Claims

Washington: China is actively developing its fleet of long-range bombers and “likely” training its pilots for missions targeting the US, according to a new Pentagon report.

“Over the last three years, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA)has rapidly expanded its overwater bomber operating areas, gaining experience in critical maritime regions and likely training for strikes against US and allied targets,” the report said.
The “Annual Report on Military and Security Developments Involving the People’s Republic of China” is a US government report mandated by Congress, which details Chinese military developments over the previous year.
This year’s report also claims that China is pursuing a nuclear capability on its long-range bombers, saying the Chinese air force “has been re-assigned a nuclear mission.”
“The deployment and integration of nuclear capable bombers would, for the first time, provide China with a nuclear ‘triad’ of delivery systems dispersed across land, sea, and air,” the report said.
In response to the report, China called on the US to abandon its “Cold War mentality.”
“We demand that the US side abandon the Cold War mentality, to view China’s national defense and military construction with objective and rationality,” China’s Ministry of National Defense said in a statement Friday.
China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also responded with a statement, saying Saturday, “The US report ignores the facts, and improperly comments on China’s national defense construction and makes irresponsible remarks about China’s legitimate behavior of safeguarding the sovereignty and security.”
Chinese President Xi Jinping has made no secret of his desire to modernize China’s armed forces, including weeding out widespread corruption in the ranks and updating the country’s military hardware.
As Thursday’s report notes, the PLA is undergoing “the most comprehensive restructure in its history to become a force capable of fighting joint operations.”
The United States released a new Defense Strategy at the beginning of 2018 where it proclaimed “long-term strategic competitions with China” as one of the US military’s top challenges.
According to Thursday’s report, China is working on a “stealthy, long-range strategic bomber with a nuclear delivery capability that could be operational within the next 10 years,” in addition to the bombers it already operates.
In a show of the expanding reach of Beijing’s power, the Chinese military landed nuclear-capable H-6K bombers on one of their artificial islands in the South China Sea for the first time in May.

Cold War mentality

This year’s report comes at a time of heightened tensions between the United States and China, amid an escalating trade war and disagreements over Beijing’s actions in Taiwan and the South China Sea.
Even before the new report’s release, Washington was feeling the full brunt of the Chinese military’s fury over a new $717 billion US defense bill which encourages closer cooperation with Taiwan to counter Beijing.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Chinese Ministry of Defense spokesman Wu Qian said the United States was”full of Cold War mentality.”
“A man cannot prosper without honesty, the same is true for a country,” Wu said. “We urge the US to stick to its promises to China regarding Taiwan question, and uphold the one-China policy.”
The new US report released on Thursday said China was deploying “increasingly advance military capabilities intended to coerce Taiwan” in a bid to prevent the island from declaring independence.
Despite Taiwan being self-governed for almost 70 years, the mainland Chinese government continues to view the island as an integral part of its territory.
The US report didn’t just highlight threats to the United States or its allies — there was also a broader discussion of the spread of Chinese influence around the world.
The document notes China has established its first overseas base in Djibouti and that it “will seek to establish additional military bases in countries with which it has a longstanding friendly relationship and similar strategic interests, such as Pakistan, and in which there is a precedent for hosting foreign militaries.”
China formally established its Djibouti military base in July last year, followed several months later by the country’s controversial acquisition of the Hambantota port in Sri Lanka.
Around the time of the Djbouti base opening, an editorial in the state-run Global Times stressed its importance to Beijing’s plans. “Certainly this is the People’s Liberation Army’s first overseas base and we will base troops there. It’s not a commercial resupply point… This base can support Chinese Navy to go farther, so it means a lot,” said the paper.
The Pentagon report said Chinese President Xi Jinping’s signature infrastructure policy, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), served to encourage countries to fall into line with China’s ambitions.
“China intends to use the BRI to develop strong economic ties with other countries, shape their interests to align with China’s, and deter confrontation or criticism of China’s approach to sensitive issues,” the report said.
China also continues to develop counterspace capabilities, “including kinetic-kill missiles, ground-based lasers and orbiting space robots,” the report saida time when US President Donald Trump plans to establish a Space Force by 2020 to protect US assets in space.
Beijing is also working “to expand space surveillance capabilities that can monitor objects across the globe and in space and enable counterspace actions.”

2019 Polls: INEC Will Not Postpone Elections –Chairman ***Insists on FG Approved N189.2 bn

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will not postpone the 2019 elections because of the delay in the passage of its budget.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made the clarifications while fielding questions from State House correspondents on Friday in Abuja.

He said that there was no provision under the law for postponement of elections.

“I have said this over and over again; there are no conditions under which elections should be postponed, under section 26 of the Electoral Act.

“The date is formed and fixed, February 16, 2019; we issued the timetable way in advance; for the very first time in the history of our nation, citizens of Nigeria know when elections will take place one year in advance. It has never happened before.

“Secondly, for the very first time in the history of our country, citizens know the budget of the electoral commission; citizens know line by line how much the commission proposed; what the money is going to be spent on.

“ I think I am very happy with this process.’’

He said that as provided in the constitution, INEC had, since April 27, 2017, been registering voters consistently in response to appeal by Nigerians.

Yakubu said that INEC had created more centres for the registration but finally decided that it should suspend the process as provided for by the law, six months to the elections.

He said however that in response to appeal by Nigerians, again, INEC extended the exercise to the end of August.

“As at Saturday last week- Aug. 11- we have registered 12.1 million citizens; this will eventually be added to the 70 million voters that are already registered for the 2019 general elections.

“We have voters register of over 80 million citizens.

“Let me make this very important clarification; the registration is going to take place between 9am in the morning and 5pm daily including weekends but excluding the public holiday. You know Tuesday and Wednesday next week have been declared public holiday.

“The second important clarification that I should make is that the end of the continuous voters’ registration is Aug. 31 but that does not mean the end of the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

“Collection of PVCs will continue until at least one week to the general election in February 2019,’’ he said.

The INEC boss said he was not worried that the virement for the conduct of 2019 election was still before the National Assembly as he remained optimistic.

He said he had made the clarifications that the National Assembly asked for; adding the two committees on INEC expressed satisfaction on his clarifications.

He said he looked forward to hearing what the National Assembly would say.

Yakubu said that Nigerians needed to know that what the commission requested for was N189.2 billion which the executive proposed to the National Assembly.

According to him, there are no discrepancies in the figures.

He said he was in the Presidential villa to fine-tune modalities on how Nigeria would help Guinea-Bissau in its forthcoming elections as the country had requested Nigeria’s assistance.

2019 DELTA ASSEMBLY POLLS: Esenwah Unveils Development Blueprint, Lists Gains For Oshimili North Constituents

-By Albert OGRAKA:

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) House of Assembly aspirant in Oshimili North Constituency, Hon. Frank Ngozi Chukwuka Esenwah, has listed the gains for his constituents and expressed his readiness to render unequal service to the people, if nominated and elected into the Delta state House of Assembly.

Esenwah, a former member-elect in the Federal House of Representatives for Aniocha-Oshimili Federal Constituency in 1998, said he is desirous to utilize the proximity of Asaba, the Delta state capital and the commercial and industrial cities of Onitsha-Obosi-Nnewi to enhance the human capital needs of his constituents for greater technology and business innovation.

“These feats on techno-commercial growth is achievable if given the enabling environment for the private sector to thrive because it remains the best option to generate employment, hence technology is a veritable means to profitably engage our teeming youths in productive ventures.”

He further pledged to ensure that his constituents enjoy meaningful education for human capital development, health care delivery services, rural integrated development, as well as agriculture for economic emancipation and transformation.

On his mission to the House of Assembly, Esemwah said he would synergize with stakeholders to enkindle available development potentials through robust, effective legislation and interventions that will have positive impact on the lives of the people of Oshimili North constituency.

According to Esenwah, “My record of service to humanity and my exemplary political experience over the decades has greatly endeared me to the people and I am fully ready to give the people of Oshimili North constituency a very effective representation at the Delta state House of Assembly, where I will canvass our common interests, towards attracting democratic dividends to my beloved constituency.”

Speaking on how to break the jinx of the perceived marginalization of the North North communities, namely Illah, Okpanam, Akwukwu-Igbo, Ebu, Ugbolu and Atuma by the North South Ibusa axis who still wants the House of Assembly seat zoned to them, after having occupied the legislative seat for 20 uninterrupted years in Oshimili North local government area, Esenwah said,”there is no jinx. Its not about just breaking jinx, its all about the best person occupying the position. I believe its all about opportunities because those who are there today were nowhere when we were doing politics. They also have the right to contest elections. I won’t want us to go into ethnic and geographical lamentations. In the present circumstance I am the best aspirant in Oshimili North. I have also worked for the system. I am a totally committed and loyal member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State.”

The development lawyer, who appealed to the electorates to ensure that their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) are handy ahead of the general elections advised them to always evaluate their gains and pains during the tenure of past representatives at the House of Assembly before voting their consciences.

Esemwah told the delegates and electorates to remain resolute and committed to standing out for the best aspirants during the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries and general elections. “I can do better for Oshimili North Constituency than what we have now at the House of Assembly”, he insisted.

Medical Tourism: 70-Year-Old Nigerian Woman Chooses UAE For Pacemaker Implant

10 percent of people over the age of 70 may need a pacemaker implanted in their chest to improve their heart function and living condition

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: If you meet 70-year-old Maria, a Nigerian national, you’d never know she has a dual chamber pacemaker to keep her heart beating well. Full of life and vigour, Maria came to the UAE to treat her atrioventricular (AV) block. An AV block is a serious heart condition where the heart beats irregularly and much slower than usual. It can cause loss of consciousness or complete collapse. Patients with this condition need to have a pacemaker – a small device that rests inside your upper chest and connects to your heart with special wires where it operates steadily and silently. As such, when doctors in her home country advised Maria for an implant, she knew that this procedure required the services of an expert. Without wasting any time, she decided to travel to the UAE and approached Emirates Hospital Jumeirah for this surgery.

“When Maria visited us for the first time, her reports indicated that her heart was struggling to send electrical signals between the upper and lower chambers of her heart. This may lead to sudden collapse of the patient and could cause significant detrimental effects due to major injuries and sometimes death if a pacemaker wasn’t implanted immediately. As such, we implanted the most advanced dual chamber pacemaker, which is MRI compatible. This feature allows patients to perform scans and MRIs in the future without a cause to worry,” said Dr Allam Alkowatli, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist and Chief of Cardiology at Emirates Hospital Jumeirah, who recently implanted the first device at the facility.

Dr Allam Alkowatli

Almost the size of a wrist watch, Dr Allam and his team implanted the pacemaker connecting to Maria’s heart within an hour. She was kept under observation for 24 hours and offered discharge the very next day. On the morning of her surgery, she was offered medication to make her feel sleepy and comfortable.

“An implant is a day surgery procedure but requires the services of an expert. Having this surgery by inexperienced cardiologists or surgeons can be harmful and may lead to major complications including lung puncture, significant bleeding, , blood clots, wound infection, fluids around the heart and rarely death.. While physicians in countries all over the world perform similar procedures and implant pacemakers, the UAE is now known for its great reputation in having such high expertise available, drawing several patients from all over the world to the country,” continued Dr Allam.

According to research report Global Medical Tourism Market it was noted that the global medical tourism market is projected to display a robust growth represented by a CAGR of 1.65 percent during 2018 – 2023. In the past few years, the UAE has become a central destination for world-class medical tourism, with Dubai ranking first in the Middle East due to its advanced treatment and facilities.

“While pacemakers are opted by several people to improve their living conditions, scepticism surrounding this device is yet very high. However, recent developments and advancements in technology have made the device so small and seamless that there’s no bump in the chest and the patients can barely tell they have a pacemaker at all,” concluded Dr Allam.

Known to be a device of the old, around 10 percent of people over the age of 70 have a pacemaker implanted in their chest. Approximately one million pacemakers are implanted annually, providing electrical stimulation to regulate a patient’s heartbeat. Conventional pacemakers are surgically placed under the skin of a patient’s chest, with wires, or leads, stretching from the shoulder vein and attaching to the heart. The cost of a pacemaker is higher than the average, but is covered under insurance and can last for 8-12 years.

Alibaba Group Founder Jack Ma to Donate US$10M to Establish Africa Entrepreneur Prize

Jack Ma Foundation will recognize 100 African entrepreneurs over the next 10 years focused on grassroots innovation, economic empowerment of women and small businesses.

JOHANNESBURG- Alibaba Group founder and Executive Chairman Jack Ma launched the Jack Ma Foundation ‘Netpreneur’ Prize, a new program created to support and fund African entrepreneurs who are working to address Africa’s most important challenges and further its digital economy through local entrepreneurship. The prize was announced at the “Netpreneurs: The Rise of Africa’s Digital Lions” conference.

The Netpreneur Prize – named for empowering a new generation of entrepreneurs, and focusing on small business growth, grassroots innovation and women founders – will award US$10 million to 100 African entrepreneurs over the next 10 years. Starting in 2019, the Jack Ma Foundation will host an annual pitch competition, with ten finalists selected from across the continent to showcase their talent and business ideas and compete for US$1 Million in prize money. All ten finalists will receive grant funding from the Jack Ma Foundation, as well as access to the Netpreneur community of African business leaders to leverage the community’s shared expertise, best practices and resources.

Jack Ma decided to create the prize after his first trip to Africa in July 2017 when he was inspired by the energy and entrepreneurial potential of the young people he met. While the competition will be open to entrepreneurs in all industries, Mr. Ma expects many of the applicants to be founders of businesses that are internet-driven given the open and inclusive impact technology can have on local economies. Applicants must be African nationals leading mission-driven organizations. The finalists will be selected by a team of judges from five regions representing the entire continent. Applications for the first pitch competition will be open from January 2019 until April 2019, and the finalist pitch competition will be held and broadcast across Africa in the second half of 2019. The program will be offered across the continent through lead continental partner, Nailab, and other regional hub partners.

Jack Ma said, “As a fellow entrepreneur, I understand the importance of getting support during the early days. This prize demonstrates our support of the next generation of young entrepreneurs across Africa who are paving the way for a better future and imparting positive change in their communities. I am inspired and encouraged by these entrepreneurs who, together, will help build a sustainable, inclusive economy for Africa and for the world.” The “Netpreneurs: The Rise of Africa’s Digital Lions” conference – jointly organized by Alibaba Business School, the Jack Ma Foundation, and United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) – brought together more than 800 entrepreneurs, policymakers, academics, students, banks and venture capitalists to address the challenges and opportunities facing Africa’s entrepreneurs. Across Africa, e-commerce platforms alongside payments, logistics, tourism and big data partners are helping to lift national economies. The event explored the barriers facing a new digital Africa and the role that the public sector, investors, entrepreneurs and educational organizations play in this transformation.
Ban Ki-moon, Former UN Secretary General and Co-chair of the Ban Ki-moon Center for Global Citizens, said, “With the rapid development of the global digital economy and the availability of technology, the next century belongs to Africa. I am excited to join the advisory board of the Africa Netpreneur Prize. Through this prize, we aim to support African entrepreneurs to build a more inclusive and prosperous Africa and dramatically shape the future prospects of the continent for the better.”
The Netpreneur Prize is the second initiative launched by Jack Ma to support African entrepreneurs. Last year, Alibaba Business School and UNCTAD announced the eFounders Fellowship Initiative, a program that will train 1,000 entrepreneurs from emerging markets, 200 of whom will come from Africa, with the purpose of building a community of young entrepreneurs committed to creating digital platforms to build more inclusive economies. This program supports the aims of the UN Sustainable Development Goal of ensuring no one is left behind in the digital economy. To date, 52 African entrepreneurs have participated in this two-week fellowship at Alibaba’s headquarters in Hangzhou, China. Participants make a two-year commitment to improving society through their businesses. The graduates of the first two African cohorts reunited with Jack Ma and UNCTAD Secretary-General Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi in Johannesburg on August 8. Since completing the program, many graduates have made significant progress with their businesses and become catalysts for digital transformation in their home countries, including raising rounds of investment as well as launching their own training programs.
“The rise of the digital economy provides growth and opportunity to the developing world, but it is up to us to make sure no one is left behind. The work that Jack Ma and UNCTAD are doing together will help empower the emerging generation of young African business leaders to participate in and lead that growth,” said Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi.

Chelsea Buy Kepa Arrizabalaga, World’s Most Expensive Keeper **As Courtois Moves To Madrid

Thibaut Courtois: moves to Madrid

Chelsea are splashing a world record 80 million euro or $92m on Athletic Bilbao’s goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga after they agreed terms with Real Madrid for the transfer of Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

No fee was revealed for the transfer of the Courtois, who had just one more year to run on his Chelsea contract, although Spanish media claimed that the deal is worth around 35 million euros.

Chelsea added in a statement that subject to the completion of the Courtois deal, Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic would join the Blues from Real on a season-long loan.

The English giants have been forced into finding a replacement for Courtois, 26, after he failed to report for pre-season training on Monday.

Kepa Arrizabalaga: moves to Chelsea at world record $92m

Courtois joined Chelsea from Genk in 2011, but spent three seasons on loan at Atletico Madrid before returning to London where he won two Premier League titles in four seasons.

And with his two children still resident in the Spanish capital, Courtois’s agent claimed earlier this week family commitments were a motivating factor in forcing a move to the European champions.

“He has made it clear to the club that the best option for him is to move to Madrid,” Christophe Henrotay told the Sun newspaper.

“For him this is a big decision because he wants to be near his family, and there is an offer in place for Chelsea to accept.”

Just weeks after Liverpool broke the record transfer fee for a goalkeeper in a deal worth up to 72.5 million euros for Brazilian international Alisson Becker, the inexperienced Arrizabalaga, 23, is now set to inherit the title of the world’s most expensive goalkeeper.

Earlier on Wednesday, Bilbao confirmed that Arrizabalaga had paid his buyout clause at the league’s headquarters in Madrid to free him from his contract with Athletic.

Arrizabalaga has played 53 times in La Liga for Bilbao over the last two seasons, and made his international debut in a 5-0 friendly win over Costa Rica in November 2017.

He was also in the Spain squad for the World Cup in Russia as back-up to David De Gea, but has yet to make his competitive debut for Spain.

But for a late change of course due to the wishes of former Real boss Zinedine Zidane, Arrizabalaga could have joined Madrid himself in January when his buyout clause was just 20 million euros.

However, after that move collapsed, he signed a new seven-year deal with the Basque side that dramatically increased his release clause and has cost Chelsea dear.

FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup: Nigeria’s Falconets Mauls Haiti 1-0

Nigeria’s Under-20 female team the Falconets defeated Haiti 1-0 on Thursday to keep hope alive in their quest to move into the knockout stage at ongoing FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in France.

The match played at Stade de Marville in the French city of Saint-Malo saw team captain Rasheedat Ajibade netting the only goal of the match through a first half penalty kick.

The victory which earned Nigeria the maximum three points started at a furious pace but neither side were able to put up any real goal-scoring threat.

It took until the 36th minute to see the breakthrough, with Nigeria being awarded a penalty kick after Anam Imo was fouled in the area by Haiti’s Dougenie Joseph.

Ajibade, who is Africa’s top scorer in qualifying for France 2018, made no mistake when presented with the opportunity and converted what turned out to be the winning goal from 12 yards.

Haiti responded to going behind almost immediately but Nerilia Mondesir was denied by the post after a swift counter-attack.

The Caribbean side continued to push for the equaliser but goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, who was later picked “Player of the Match’’, proved to be equal to every challenge that came her way.

Mondesir and Melchie Dumonay took much of the initiative going forward, looking dangerous at times, but the Nigerian backline, marshalled by Nnadozie, held on for the victory.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the win pushed Nigeria up the group’s table from fourth place after Monday’s opening matches to second place after Thursday’s matches.

Germany, 1-0 winners over Nigeria on Monday, remained firm as Group D leaders after beating China PR 2-0 in the group’s other MatchDay 2 fixture earlier at the same venue.

Nigeria now need at least a draw in their final group phase match on Monday against China PR to be able to finish second and pick the group’s other quarter-final ticket.

Germany face Haiti on Monday at Stade de la Rabine in Vannes in their final group phase game and look sure bets to emerge group leaders, even after a slim loss.

The Falconets can be sure of emerging group runners-up with at least a draw against China PR at Clos Gastel Stadium in Lehon, at Dinan-Lehon, even if Haiti beat Germany.
