Nigeria, Namibia’s Young Artists Called To ‘Give Art Life’ And Enter 2018 L’Atelier Art Competition

0

The L’Atelier art competition is one of the longest-running and most prestigious visual arts competitions on the African continent. It was established in South Africa 33 years ago, but in recent years has been expanded to include a number of other African countries in order to reach more young artists and further the unparalleled opportunities it affords those who participate in the competition. For the first time in its history, this now includes the countries of Nigeria and Namibia.

This brings to 12 the number of African countries participating in the competition, which is jointly sponsored by Barclays Africa (www.BarclaysAfrica.com) and the South African National Association for the Visual Arts (SANAVA). The other participating countries include South Africa, Botswana, Ghana, Zambia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Mauritius, Seychelles and Mozambique.

L’Atelier rewards young visual artists with unparalleled industry opportunities to develop their talents abroad. As such, the competition is open to all professional and self-taught emerging artists aged 21 to 35 who are permanent residents of, and reside in, these qualifying countries.

For thousands of artists across Africa whose creativity is their livelihood, art gives life. Now, L’Atelier is asking these artists to ‘Give art life’ as it calls for entries into this year’s competition.

This inspiring theme of the 2018 competition reflects the idea that the highly acclaimed L’Atelier gives African contemporary art, and the fresh young talent behind it, a platform to thrive. This is evident in the once-in-a-lifetime opportunities presented through the competition.

For the main winners, this includes a six-month art residency at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris, and a cash prize of R330 000.

Similarly, the first Merit Award prize comprises a three-month art residency at the Bag Factory in South Africa; the second Merit Award, a two-month art residency at the Sylt Foundation, on the island of Sylt in Germany, and the third Merit Award, a one-month art residency with the Ampersand Foundation in New York, USA.

All Top 10 finalists in the competition are also placed on a two-day art professionalism course to assist them in managing their careers – a vital aspect in helping young artists turn their talent into profitable businesses.

Dr. Paul Bayliss, Absa Art and Museum Curator, says L’Atelier organisers and the entire adjudication panel are looking forward to seeing the works of artists from Namibia and Nigeria among this year’s entries.

“We are very excited to welcome Namibian and Nigerian artists on board, and to see them join so many other artists from across the African continent in taking up the opportunities presented to them through this competition. L’Atelier has played a significant role in the careers of many influential visual artists from Africa, particularly the winners, who have benefited from the exposure afforded to them through the residencies.”

“Since extending the competition to across the African continent, the response from young, up-and-coming artists has been incredible. This bears testament to the fact that emerging artists realise the immense value L’Atelier adds to their careers. It has been very encouraging to see Africa’s young artists making the most of the opportunities that are being created to support and help grow their careers. It’s important not only that artists take advantage of these opportunities, but that they put their best works forward when doing it,” says Bayliss.

To enter the 2018 competition, artists simply need to visit the L’Atelier website at www.LAtelierCompetition.com, click on the “enter L’Atelier 2018” button, and complete the required information. Registration opens on 1 February 2018, entries can be uploaded from 1 March 2018, and entries close on 27 April 2018.

Nigeria Crude Oil: FG Earned N7.3Tn in 2017 – Amnesty Office Declares

0

The Presidential Amnesty Office has said the Federal Government earned a total of N7.3 trillion in oil revenue generation in 2017.

The increased earnings resulted from the relative peace in the oil-bearing communities of the Niger Delta region, said the Head of Media in the Amnesty Office, Owei Lakemfa.

Mr. Lakemfa made this known in a statement on Monday, saying the feat was attained through collaboration with government agencies and the people of the Niger Delta.

He said the cooperation between stakeholders led to a boost in production thereby increasing earnings by N1.6 trillion against the N5.7trillion the government got in 2016.

“The programme has contributed immensely to human capital development in the oil and gas producing region with 1,431 graduating under its scholarship scheme from 23 countries including 13 PhD. and 10, 600 from universities in the country.

“In a sense, the programme has become a victim of its own success as some Nigerians have come to view it as the body that should rectify the age-long challenges of the Niger Delta and bring development to it,” Mr. Lakemfa said.

While describing the programme as a huge success, Mr. Lakemfa said the office is not comfortable that critics are assessing the programme outside its statutory mandate.

He, however, listed the achievement of the programme to include: putting an end to armed conflict in the region and sustained interaction with stakeholders.

Others were the peaceful resolution of crises, engagements with the leadership of groups and peace-building initiatives.

Despite delays in the release of funds, he said the programme succeeded in paying monthly stipends to the ex-agitators up to last December, adding that the outstanding stipend would be released as soon as the 2018 budget is released.

Mr. Lakemfa said the programme has provided up-to-date fees to all its offshore and onshore beneficiaries at home, within the continent as well as in Europe, United States and Asia.

According to him, the office is on the final integration stage and is currently empowering the ex-agitators so they can establish their businesses.

“Many ex-agitators are now proud farm owners. They own rice and fish farms, poultry, piggery, snailery, etc., and are employers of labour. Some youth were mobilised to protest against the Amnesty Office based on misinformation and misconception.

‘’Our mandate does not include the provision of housing or pension to beneficiaries. So, the claim that the office has failed to fulfil this promise is baseless since no such agreement or policy was ever made.

“Our mandate is human capacity development and ensuring a peaceful environment to allow for investment and the development work of other agencies like the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs.

‘’The Presidential Amnesty Programme is not a scholarship scheme or a mass employment bureau. It is primarily to cater for the 30,000 beneficiaries and some youth from the impacted community who accepted amnesty to work for peace in the Niger Delta.”

Tears And Wailing: Delta Mothers Cry Out For God’s Intervention On National Insecurity

0

Nigeria (Blank NEWS Online) –By Albert OGRAKA:

As Nigerians, especially Christians continue to ponder on the way out of the present rising spate of insecurity in the country, women across Delta state, led by the First Lady, Dame Edith Okowa, were all in tears, wailing and praying to God as a last resort, to redeem them from their predicaments.

The intercession prayer, organized by wife of Delta state governor and founder of 05-Initiative, Dame (Mrs.) Edith Okowa is the 11th edition of the annual Delta Mothers’ Day Of Prayer, tagged “Mothers Arise –Let Your Voice Be Heard.

Speaking on the theme, “Brokenness: Need For A Successful Walk With God” on Monday, February 12, 2018 at the Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba, Dame Okowa stated that “God has given us liberty to cry to him in our 18th year and we will blow our trumpet 18 times.”

She noted that “Until you understand that something is wrong with you, you cannot solve it”, adding that “There is an urgent need to take a stand for Christ to be able to sustain the good things God has promised us.”

The First Lady urged all Christian mothers to exhibit a character adorned with every Christian grace and the broken spiritual nature which God has endowed in them, saying that “Brokenness is the cost required for maximum usefulness to attract God’s divine defense of His chosen people. The reason why we do not change for the better after hearing the word of God is because we are not broken.”

She further encouraged Nigerian women to be positive in their thoughts, actions and prayers for the nation as well as ensure that their children and wards uphold good and responsible values.

She however thanked Mrs. Roli Nere Uduaghan for initiating the programme, which she described as a good seed sown in Delta state. “She has planted a good seed in Delta state. It is a good seed that you will water. If this seed was not good we will not water it. You pointed us to Christ. You thought us the way of Christ. You made us to raise alters in different parts of Delta state

Earlier in her welcome charge, Barr. (Mrs.) Kesiena Samson challenged women to be productive in the House of God by surrendering to God Almighty, stressing that brokenness is the pass mark for anyone who wants to get through to God.

In her message of exaltation and lecture on the theme, “Brokenness: Need For A Successful Walk With God”, Pastor Mrs. Ruth Aifobokhia posited that women can stand up to make positive changes in a nation through Godly influence after being broken to take up responsibilities and challenges that may arise at any time.

In her message chosen from the Holy Bible books of Jeremiah 33:6; Hosea 6:1; Psalms 51:8, Jeremiah 24:7; Jeremiah 31:9 and James 4:9 respectively, she said that brokenness brings about healing, successes, security, stability and truth.

“A woman that is broken receives a new heart. It removes guilt and brings joy. Having received a heart to know God and delivered from stumbling, brokenness gives a position of headship and rulership and God will make the later part of our lives to be purposeful and productive.”

Leading the payer for the nation, Brother Geoffrey Onyeonachie lamented the unprecedented spate of national insecurity which has resulted in unwholesome gruesome attacks and terrorizing of innocent citizens by armed herdsmen who engages in kidnappings, armed robbery and other social vices.

Prayer sessions were anchored by Venerable Charles Osemenem, Pastor Chuks Anizior, Evangelist Ngozi Bamah, Pastor Matthew Ezedom and Brother Geoffrey Onyeonachie for the Church, Family, Community, Delta state and the Nigeria nation.

The prayer session which featured rendition of hymns, songs of praise and worship to God, was attended by Christian women of faith from within and outside Delta state, including the wives of former Governor and Deputy Governor of the state, Deaconess Roli Nere Uduaghan and Mrs. Nelly Utuama; wife of former CAN National Chairman Mama Helen Oritsejafor, wives of Bishops, Pastors, traditional rulers and the Anglican Communion.

I Have No Plan To Colonize Any Part Of Nigeria —Buhari Tells Catholic Bishops

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the policy proposed by Federal Government in response to the frequent clashes between herdsmen and farmers in the country is not meant to colonize any part of the country.

Buhari regretted that the well-thought out policy of the Federal Government, which was conceived after wide consultations with stakeholders, had been largely misunderstood by a section of the public.

He told Catholic Bishops, under the aegis of Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, in Abuja on Thursday that the intention of government is to create grazing locations for cattle rearers, which has now been misconstrued as another form of colonization.

He, however, assured the Catholic Bishops that the Federal Government will continue to explore all opportunities and support initiatives to ensure peace and stability in restive areas.

Condemning recent spate of killings in Benue, Adamawa, Taraba, and Zamfara states, the President said security operatives would ensure prosecution of perpetrators and all those found with illegal arms in the affected areas.

‘‘The impression created that I was sitting in an air-conditioned office and home, enjoying myself while these things happened, is dishonest.

‘‘At every step, I have tried to foresee these problems because I have the experience as a former military officer who commanded three out of the four divisions of the Nigerian army, in Lagos, Ibadan and Jos.

‘‘I am quite aware of the problems we have and I am doing my best to get law enforcement agencies to be on alert,’’ he said.

The President told the Catholic Bishops that he would not be tired of recounting remarkable progress recorded in the areas of security, economy and the fight against corruption.

‘‘We have done very well on security in the North East, when you compare what the condition was before we came in and what it is now.

‘‘On the economy, particularly agriculture, I am very pleased that God answered the prayers of Nigerians who prayed for bountiful harvest.

‘‘People have taken advantage of Federal Government policies and programmes to return to the farm and they have not regretted,’’ he said.

Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama, who led the Catholic bishops pledged that the Catholic Church in Nigeria would continue to support the Buhari administration and make its contribution to nation-building through prayers, admonitions and assistance to needy Nigerians.

‘‘As the voice of the people, we shall continue to highlight the plight of our people and play our prophetic role of sensitising the government, thus promoting good governance, national unity and cohesion,’’ Kaigama said.

STOP OKOWA FROM SENDING MILITARY PERSONNEL TO US –UGBORODO ELDERS BEG BUHARI:

The people of Ugborodo Community in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State have begged President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently stop Governor Ifeanyi Okowa from alleged plans to send military personnel into their Community.
In an open letter to the President, the people fumed over the alleged plans of the Governor to send military personnel to their area, saying that;” This is a consciously ill advised and bad decision by the Delta State Government led by Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa, the governor of Delta State and his Deputy, Barrister Kingsley Otuaro.”
The letter to the President was signed by Pa Douglas Omagbemi (Ugborodo Community), Pa Pasco Oritsegbami (Elder, Ugborodo community) and Hon Thomas Metseagharun (The Toritsemogha of Ugborodo Community).
“It has come to our knowledge that there are plans currently ongoing to send military personnel to a hitherto peaceful Ugborodo community. With due respect and recourse to the rule of law and respect for properly constituted authority, this is a consciously ill advised and bad decision by the Delta State Government led by Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, the governor of Delta State and his deputy, Barrister Kingsley Otuaro”, they wrote.
According to them;”We wish to restate our stand that Ugborodo is not a part of the Warri/Itsekiri kingdom and that this should not be misconstrued as formenting trouble but rather, putting the record straight and being on the right side of truth on this issue which we have consistently stated. We have usually and continue to live peacefully with our neighbours (The Gbaramatu Kingdom) And all we ask is to be left alone to continue living in peace”.
They also wrote;”We write to you because as commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, we are constrained and led to believe that any such wholesale movement of military personnel is within your purview and as such, we would advise restraint and a stand down order, as this single action is capable of jeopardizing the current fragile peace that we enjoy in Ugborodo and possibly disturb the peaceful operation of the oil companies currently operating within the locality”.
“Mr President, we want you to know that there is an existing Police Station in Mandagho. The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) lives in Chevron Tank Farm, a stone thrown through from Atunton and we are therefore baffled why the Delta State Government led by Governor Okowa is planning to send another security personnel to our area if there is no hidden agenda. This move must be stopped by the President”, they further wrote.
While reminding the President of the unfortunate Warri crisis, they posited that;”We would also like to draw the attention of the President to the events that followed the relocation of the Warri South West local government Area headquarters from Ogbe-Ijoh to Ogidigben which caused years of conflict and caused the loss of lives and properties including but not limited to the oil companies operating in the area as well as numerous and unclear number of citizens. Those who refused to learn from history are doomed to repeat the same mistakes”.
A government that is supposed to protect lives and properties of the citizenry, they said;” Should not be seen to be taking sides with an oppressive and divisive group that does not reside in our communities to cause disharmony among the law abiding people of Ugborodo”.
“Instead of sending security agents to cause crisis in Ugborodo and its environs, it would seem that such efforts would be better geared towards retrieving monies given to these same divisive elements as contracts for the development of our communities, which they have blatantly not carried out”, they said
The people used  medium to call on the Government, “To retrieve said funds meant for our development which have been sadly redirected and diverted to private individuals and pockets”.
They also wrote that;”Furthermore, we ask the President to caution the Dr Ifeanyi Okowa led government of Delta State to stop fanning the embers of conflict which have laid untouched and led to a general level of peace in not just Ugborodo but its environs. The Governor and his Deputy should be stopped from taking sides and possibly starting a general level of lawlessness and violence that could be averted by simply allowing the people of Ugborodo to continue to live in peace with their neighbours”,

Gov. Okowa Sacks Commissioners, Reshuffles Cabinet **More Commissioners, Other Appointees’ Exit Underway

By Albert OGRAKA —

The plot by Delta state governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa to drop some alleged non performing Commissioners and members of the State Executive Council has finally been hatched.

The governor’s plan was first published by Blank NEWS Online on January 30, 2018 with the title “Tension Builds Up In Delta Over Planned Sack Of Commissioners By Gov. Okowa.”

The two commissioners who were dropped were Dr. Nicholas Azinge [Health], and Chief Dan Okenyi [Culture & Tourism], while those reassigned are Hon Asupa Forteta, formerly of the Directorate Of Youths Development, now heads the Urban Renewal Directorate; Chief Karo Ilolo, formerly of Directorate of Urban Renewal Directorate now takes charge of the Youths Development Directorate.

Others are Hon. Bright Edejewhro, formerly of Local Government Affairs Directorate now heads Ministry Of Science and Technology and Hon Joyce Overah, of the Ministry of The Science and Technology now moves to Local Government Affairs Directorate.

The sack and minor cabinet reshuffle, according to insider sources, was delayed by the governor due to pressures from some party chieftains and top business executives, whose appointees were earlier penciled down for sack.

“A lot of lobbying was done. That is why the number of those affected reduced. The earlier intention of the governor was to embark on a major overhaul or surgery but he was advised that it could affect his electoral chances in 2019. Who knows, more sack could still come. The polity is already heated up.”

Blank NEWS Online checks have revealed that there is still palpable fear, tension and angst amongst serving Commissioners, their godfathers and stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state over the minor reshuffle, as grapevine information is still rife that the governor is not done yet with his avowed plan to weed the state executive council off of alleged bad eggs.

Another check explored also revealed that a likely replacement for Dr. Nicholas Azinge [Health] is Dr. Isioma Okobah, who is presently the Chairman of Delta State Primary Health Care Development Agency (DSPHCDA) in the state.

A statement, made available to Blank NEWS Online on Thursday, February 8, 2018 by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Charles Aniagwu reads:

“Delta State Governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa has effected a minor cabinet reshuffle relieving two commissioners of their portfolios while reassigning four others.

“The two commissioners who were dropped were Dr.

“Others are Hon. Bright Edejewhro, formerly of Local Government Affairs Directorate now heads Ministry Of Science and Technology and Hon Joyce Overah, of the Ministry of The Science and Technology now moves to Local Government Affairs Directorate.

“The decision to reshuffle the cabinet is in line with the state government’s desire to re-energise the machinery of government and bring new impetus into service delivery.

“Governor Okowa in a statement signed by the Secretary To State Government, Hon. Ovie Agas thanked the two commissioners relieved of their portfolios for their commitment and contributions to the SMART Agenda and wish them success in their future endeavours.

“The statement also said that the cabinet reshuffle takes effect from February 8, 2018.”

COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE PEOPLE’S DEMOCRATIC PARTY (PDP) NATIONAL WORKING COMMITTEE (NWC) AND IT’S GOVERNORS’ FORUM

COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE PEOPLE’S DEMOCRATIC PARTY (PDP) NATIONAL WORKING COMMITTEE (NWC) AND IT’S GOVERNORS’ FORUM

The Members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee (NWC) and it’s Governors’ Forum met in Asaba, Delta State on Sunday, 4th February, 2018 to examine the state of the nation.

Our Communique reads:

1. We strongly condemn the unabated killings across the country. We call on Mr. President to come out clean on the herdsmen killings and address the nation on how to end the carnage. The President must take responsibility on the protection of lives and property of Nigerians which is the most important of his responsibilities. We believe that the Federal Government’s decision to set up a Committee to address the issues of herdsmen killings is a pretentious approach to a matter thst requires firm action and leadership by the President in line with his oath of office to protect all Nigerians irrespective of creed, tribe and political affiliation.

2. The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has been the author of restructuring and this was further expressed in the Report of the 2014 National Conference. The All Progressive Congress (APC) as a later day convert of restructuring is merely paying lip service to a matter of national importance. However, we have mandated our members in the National Assembly to immediately commence the process of initiating a Bill to address issues bothering on restructuring.

3. We urge Mr. President to henceforth direct the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to adhere to the Rule of Law by obeying Court judgements and orders such as the one involving the Ekiti State Government against EFCC and restrain itself from further political intimidation and harassment of known or perceived political opponents. We commend the judiciary for their commitment to the enthronement of constitutional democracy in the face of intimidation and harassment.

4. We condemn in strong terms the massive corruption going on in the management of fuel subsidy regime which the Federal Government had declared non existent while billions of Naira are deducted monthly at Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) meetings.

5. The PDP states and local governments are vehemently opposed to the unilateral withdrawal of USD1Billion from the Excess Crude Account by the Federal Government under any guise. We want to state unequivocally that neither the Governors’ Forum nor the Federal Executive Council has the power of appropriation of Federation Accounts, as such powers reside with the National and State Assemblies.

6. We commend members of our party for their unalloyed support. We reiterate that our repositioned party is prepared for the 2019 elections and will ensure that all Nigerians aspiring to elective offices are free to contest on the platform of the PDP. We want to assure that no established organ of the party is allowed to align with any presidential aspirant. We thank the people and government of Delta State for playing host to this all important meeting.

Signed.

PRINCE UCHE SECONDUS
NATIONAL CHAIRMAN, PDP.

AYO FAYOSE
CHAIRMAN, PDP GOVERNORS’ FORUM.

CHAN 2018: Morocco Beat Nigeria 4-0 In Final To Lift The African Nations Trophy

Morocco became the first host nation to claim the African Nations Championship (CHAN) title with a convincing 4-0 win over 10-man Nigeria in Sunday’s final.

Key moments either side of half-time turned the match in the hosts’ favour as Morocco’s Zakaria Hadraf scored just before the break with Nigeria’s Peter Eneji Moses sent-off for a second yellow card just after.

Walid El Karti and Hadraf – with his second – added to Morocco’s lead in quick succession on the hour mark.

The rout was completed by Ayoub El Kaabi, who had hit the woodwork twice, scoring his ninth goal of the tournament which is for home-based African players.

Morocco’s first chance came in the third minute when Walid El Karti flicked the ball in from close range.

The hosts thought they had scored just four minutes later when Ayoub El Kaabi headed home, only for the assistant referee’s flag to go up – claiming the corner had swung out of play before it reached the striker.

El Kaabi then struck the bar with a spectacular overhead kick and Nigeria’s goalkeeper Oladele Ajiboye had two regulation saves to make before Morocco’s pressure told.

Captain Badr Benoun strode down the left wing and pushed the ball through to Abdeljalil Jbira in behind the defence who cut the ball back to Hadraf in the centre to guide the ball home.

Nigeria relied mainly on long balls forward for their attacks and Morocco’s Anas Zniti did not have a serious save to make before half-time.

Just two minutes after the break Peter Eneji Moses was sent off for a second booking after a clumsy late foul on Mohammed Nahiri.

On the hour mark Morocco doubled their lead when El Kaabi’s overhead kick hit the post and rebounded out for El Haddad to fire in another shot which Ajboye could only parry, leaving El Karti with an easy header.

Three minutes later Hadraf scored his second after El Haddad’s cross fell to him via a deflection off Kalu Okogbue and another Ajiboye parry.

El Kaabi finally got on the scoresheet after 73 minutes when the ball ricocheted around the area and fell at his feet for him to grab his 9th goal of the tournament.

In truth, Nigeria’s 10 men were unable to threaten Morocco at all in the second-half with Anas Zniti untroubled in the hosts’ goal.

El Kaabi’s goals saw him named man-of-the-tournament and will have caught the eye of Morocco’s full national coach Herve Renard who was watching from the stands, as he looks to finalise his squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

2019 Presidential Election: Secondus Unravels PDP Strategies ***As NWC Meet Governors, Stakeholders In Asaba

National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus has said the All Progressive Congress (APC) failure to provide good governance is a yardstick for Nigerians to vote for candidates of the PDP in the 2019 general elections.

Prince Secondus who was addressing leaders of the PDP on Sunday in Asaba, during a consultative meeting between the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP and Governors who won their elections on the platform of the PDP, expressed confidence that Nigerians will speak with one voice through their voters’ cards by voting for the PDP in the 2019 general elections.

According to him, “the weakest point in the history of the PDP is that we lost in the 2015 elections but, we should take advantage of the monumental failure of the APC, they came with a government of vengeance, we must emphasise that our people must have voters’ cards because Nigerians want us to come together and rescue the country in 2019.”

“The NWC is here (Asaba) to consult with our Governors and we are presenting our road map to victory to them; on Tuesday, we will consult with members of the National Assembly,” Prince Secondus who was at the event with the entire members of the NWC of the PDP said.

He disclosed that the PDP will wrestle power from the APC through aggressive awareness campaign for members of the party at the local government and ward levels to have their voters’ cards, assuring that the PDP has been repositioned with strong emphasis on the power of the people, the electorates who will always be given the chance to make their choice in a free, and fair manner without fear.

Delta State Governor, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa commended the NWC for choosing Delta State for its meeting and used the occasion to reel out some of the achievements of his administration in the health, and education sectors.

He also, scored his administration high in peace building, job and wealth creation, ensuring the implementation of the compulsory health insurance scheme, among others, disclosing that based on the love the people of the state have for the PDP, they voted massively for the party in the January 6, 2018 local government elections.

Governor of Rivers State, Barr. Nyesom Wike said the desire of Nigerians is for the PDP to take over power at the center in 2019, noting that based on performance, there is no fear about the party losing any of the states where they won the governorship position.

Wike, who revealed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is now more prepared to win the 2019 Presidential electiho, said the present APC led government has nothing to show as achievement to Nigerians.

He said that “if Nigeria was a country where democracy is indeed democracy, so many people won’t talk about contesting elections. What will APC come tell Nigerians they have achieved? What is giving them confidence? What they don’t understand is that we are more prepared than before and we can’t be rigged out again.”

He lambasted the Federal Government’s stand in fighting corruption, saying that “the first corruption we must fight is corruption of stealing people’s mandate.”

Read How Depression Made Cuban Nuclear Physicist Fidelito, Castro’s Eldest Son To Commit Suicide

Fidelito, the 68 year-old eldest son of late Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro, committed suicide on Thursday after being treated for months for depression, Cuban state-run media reported.

The nuclear scientist’s full name is Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart, but he was fondly called “Fidelito”, or Little Fidel, because of how much he looked like his father.

Before he took his own life, he was initially hospitalised and then he continued treatment as an outpatient.

“Castro Diaz-Balart, who had been attended by a group of doctors for several months due to a state of profound depression, committed suicide this morning,” Cubadebate website said.

Fidelito, who had the highest public profile of all Castro’s children, was born in 1949 out of his brief marriage to Mirta Diaz-Balart before he went on to topple a U.S.-backed dictator and built a communist-run state on the doorstep of the United States during the Cold War.

Through his mother, Castro Diaz-Balart was the cousin of some of Castro’s most bitter enemies in the Cuban American exile community, U.S. Representative Mario Diaz-Balart and former U.S. congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart.

He was also the subject of a dramatic custody dispute between the two families as a child.

Cuba scholars say his mother took him with her to the United States when he was aged five after announcing she wanted a divorce from Castro, while he was imprisoned for an attack on the Moncada military barracks in Santiago.

Castro was able to bring Fidelito back to Cuba after the 1959 revolution.

A multilingual nuclear physicist who studied in the former Soviet Union, Castro Diaz-Balart was head of Cuba’s national nuclear programme from 1980 to 1992, and spearheaded the development of a nuclear plant on the Caribbean’s largest island until his father fired him.

Cuba halted its plant plans that same year because of lack of funding after the collapse of Cuba’s trade and aid ties with the ex-Soviet bloc and he largely disappeared from public view appearing at the occasional scientific conference or diplomatic event.

Fidelito had been working for his uncle President Raul Castro as a scientific counsellor to the Cuban Council of State and Vice-president of the Cuban Academy of Sciences at the time of his death.

Fidelito’s death came just over a year after that of his father on November 25, 2016, aged 90.

Spiritual Leader On Death Row For Castrating 400 Followers ***Bags 20 Yr Jail Term On Rape Of Devotee Women

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, a spiritual leader in India, has been charged for forcing more than 400 followers to undergo castration.

He was charged by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

“The charge sheet against 50-year-old Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was filed by CBI in a special court Thursday,” a senior police official said Friday.

The charge sheet was filed by the CBI nearly three years after the Punjab and Haryana High Court ordered an investigation by the country’s premier probe agency into allegations of forced castration against the spiritual guru levelled by one of his former followers.

The petitioner had claimed that Singh forced over 400 followers to undergo castration at a hospital in his sect’s headquarters in the northern state of Haryana to “get closer to God.”

Singh is the head of the Dera Sacha Sauda sect, which claims to have 60 million followers around the world.

He is currently serving 20 years in jail for raping two women devotees in Haryana.

Singh is also facing trial in two murder cases.

If convicted, he could get a maximum of death penalty.

Libya: 90 Migrants Feared Dead In Shipwreck ***As Nigeria Govt Boasts Evacuation Is Success Story

As the European Union continues its rescue operations in the Mediterranean, as well as its fight against traffickers who put migrants in danger, more deaths are still being recorded in the Mediterranean sea among migrants who seek greener pastures in Europe.

Record have shown that since the start of January, 240 have arrived in Italy, compared with nine during the first month of 2017.

More than 90 migrants were feared dead after their boat capsized off the Libyan coast on Friday, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) reported.

Only two of the passengers were able to swim ashore, while one person was saved by fishermen, IOM spokeswoman Olivia Headon in Tunis told Geneva-based reporters via telephone.

The latest incident came less than a week after a dinghy carrying around 130 people capsized in the Mediterranean on Saturday night, leaving up to 40 people dead.

“Every life lost at sea is one life too many,” EU foreign policy spokeswoman Catherine Ray said in Brussels on Friday.

Meanwhle, the Nigeria’s Federal government evacuation of stranded Nigerians from Libya has been described as a huge success by the South-South Zonal Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr Martins Ejike.

Ejike, who boasted of the feat on the arrival of the fourth batch of 465 Nigerian returnees from Libya in Port Harcourt, said although there were some challenges in the process, it was nevertheless a huge success.

GROUP CONDEMNS MILITARY SIEGE ON TOMPOLO’S COMMUNITY, 24  HOURS AFTER NUC APPROVES MARITIME VARSITY

*** SAYS MILITARY SHOULD NOT JOIN FORCES WITH THOSE AGAINST MARITIME UNIVERSITY, OKERENKOKO

THE Niger Delta Indigenous Movement for Radical Change (NDIMRC), has  condemned the siege on the home town of ex-militant Leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo (aka Tompolo) by military men less than twenty four hours after the National Universities Commission (NUC) approved  the take off of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko.

The oil monitoring group, NDIMRC, specifically fumed over the alleged take over of Oporoza, Headquarters of Gbararmatu Kingdom and Azama by military men.

In a press statement signed by its President, Nelly Emma, Secretary, John Sailor and Public Relations Office (PRO) Stanley Mukoro, the group described the take over of Gbararmatu Kingdom by military operatives as uncalled for and unacceptable to the people of the Niger Delta Region.

According to the group;”On Saturday, February 3, 2018, we got distressed calls from Gbararmatu Kingdom that military men took over the area for no clear reason. The military men took over Azama and Oporoza and harassed the hell out of the people for no reason”.
“There was no sign of crisis in the area. Azama is at peace; the whole of Gbararmatu Kingdom is at peace and so we do not see any reason why the military men should create a war like situation in the area. We see the action of the military men as a ploy to delay the take off of the Nigerian Maritime University Okerenkoko. It was only on Friday, February 2, 2018, a team from the National Universities Commission (NUC) came and carried out inspection of the site of the Nigerian Maritime University Okerenkoko and gave the University a clean bill of health, only for the military men to come into the area on Saturday and started harassing and intimidating the people”, the group said.
While urging the Chief of Army Staff to call his men to order, the group said that;”The Military should leave the peace loving people of Gbararmatu Kingdom alone. The military should not join forces with those doing everything possible to see that the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko do not see the light of day. We are suspecting seriously that the enemies of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko are behind the action of the military men in the area on Saturday. The NUC has approved Takeoff Of Academic Activities At Nigerian Maritime University Okerenkoko.Let those still kicking against the University know that NUC has given the institution the go-ahead to commence graduate degree programmes, and also to admit JAMB candidates. We implore the military to vacate Gbararmatu Kingdom and stop creating war like situation in the area”.

Kenya Govt Proscribes Odinga’s Political Party ***Declares It “Organized Criminal Group”

The Kenyan government has declared the opposition coalition’s National Super Alliance (NASA)’s wing, the National Resistance Movement (NRM), as an organized criminal group.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, in a gazette notice dated January 30, outlawed the movement as per the Prevention of Organised Crimes Act, 2010.

Matiang’i issued the notice just hours after NASA leader Raila Odinga was sworn in as the “People’s President” at Uhuru Park in Nairobi.

NRM, a wing of NASA, was formed in October 2017 on the eve of repeat presidential elections.

During its launch in 2017, Odinga said NASA’s resistance wing would embark on vigorous pro-democracy campaign through economic boycotts and picketing and other legitimate forms of protests until a legitimate presidency is restored.

Odinga’s supporters say he is Kenya’s legitimate leader and Kenyatta’s election was neither free nor fair.

Kenyatta’s victory in August was annulled by the Supreme Court over irregularities but he won a re-run, which Odinga boycotted because some electoral commission reforms he demanded did not take place.

Kenyatta was sworn in for a second term in November and state institutions report to him.

“I, Raila Omolo Odinga, do swear that I will protect the nation as people’s president, so help me God,” Odinga, who held a bible, said to the cheers of more than 15,000 people in Uhuru Park, next to Nairobi’s main business district.

During a speech lasting less than five minutes, Odinga declined to give details of his plans and said they would be disclosed in “due course.”

In a possible sign of division within the opposition alliance, Odinga’s vice presidential candidate and two other senior leaders were absent.

Odinga said the vice president would be sworn in at a later date.

The attorney-general had warned that Odinga could be charged with treason if the event went ahead – an offence that can carry the death penalty.

As people assembled, authorities forced independent television and radio stations reporting on the gathering off air, several outlets said – the most widespread censorship for a decade.

The UN was watching developments in Kenya closely and it was “critical for the media to be able to operate freely and to report freely,” UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters in New York.

He said the UN was urging “that all Kenyan parties, political actors and their supporters maintain a lawful and peaceful social and political environment.”

PDP Not Sure Of Victory In 2019 Polls ***As Secondus Fears INEC Will Act Buhari’s APC Script

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and major opposition to the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) has expressed fear that the President Mohammadu Buhari led government may influence the 2019 general elections.

The National Chairman of PDP, Prince Uche Secondus also expressed fear that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) may not act as unbiased umpire in conducting a free and fair election in 2019.

Secondus, who spoke when United Nations assessment team paid him a courtesy call, said, “We have fear since APC came on board, if election is not in their favour there is a rerun. There must be election that is free and fair and when there is no free and fair election it breed crisis and we are witnessing what is happening in Kenya.

“What is happening in the West should happen here. There is a great fear whether INEC will conduct free and fair election. Free and fair election will guarantee the unity of this country and we are afraid if INEC will conduct free and fair election.”

He pointed out that President Buhari led All Progressives Congress (APC) government owes Nigerians the conduct of free and fair election, which, according to him, will guarantee the unity of Nigeria, warning that “the 2019 election will make and mar the nation.”

He said: “This visit is timely because of the unfolding event in our country and the political situation, I believe this is the time for intervention.

“Take this to New York for all the necessary action required. Election is coming in 2019, the election that will make and mar the nation. The National Assembly and the judiciary, they are important arms of the government, the judiciary is not obeyed.

“During our time, we lost without going to court and that is the first time in the history of this country,” he said.

Earlier, the leader of the team, Mr. Serge G Kubwimana, said that they were meeting with political parties to form assessment on how to support them.

Kenya Opposition Leader Odinga Risks Death Penalty ***Declares Self “People’s President”

Kenyan opposition leader, Raila Odinga, has risked being charged for treason, an offence punishable by death as he defied government’s warning and sworn-in himself as “the people’s president”.

Despite President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government warning that he could be charged for treason, an offence punishable by death if he dares it, Odinga took a symbolic oath of office on Tuesday.

Odinga, who boycotted the country’s disputed election last year, swore himself in as the “people’s president” at a mock inauguration ceremony Tuesday in protest against President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Thousands of opposition supporters gathered at Uhuru Park in central Nairobi to attend the “swearing-in” protest event, which was organised by Odinga’s National Super Alliance (NASA).

Police fired tear gas in an attempt to disperse crowds pulling down signs near the park on Tuesday.

Authorities had earlier said they would put a stop to any illegal meetings, but Reuters reported that no uniformed police could be seen in the park and no anti-riot officers or vehicles were visible.

Kenyatta won a second presidential term with 98% of the vote following a controversial election re-run in November.

The country’s Supreme Court nullified the previous ballot, also won by Kenyatta, due to “illegalities and irregularities.”

Odinga and his opposition party dropped out of the second vote, claiming the election commission had failed to implement any reforms.

A tweet by Msh Cnn‏ @mshcnn said: “Kenya opposition leader Raila Odinga swears himself in as ‘president’’.

Ozymandias‏ @jalvinz also reported that Odinga “swears an oath of office, declaring himself president of the East African nation .‘’

Tension is rising across Kenya as defeated presidential candidate Raila Odinga prepares his “inauguration.”

Authorities had warned that the move to swear-in Odinga is a treason that is punishable by death

Odinga’s security details have withdrawn and his passports and that of his running mate Mr. Kalonzo Musyoka revoked.

They are not allowed to leave the country.

Reports on social media, especially that of TV Uganda, say that four Kenyan television stations have been shut down for airing Raila Odinga’s intending swearing-in ceremony.

Odinga lost an August 8 presidential election that was nullified by the Supreme Court, and boycotted a repeat poll on October 25, saying it would not be free and fair.

Nigeria Deports Ayuk Tabe, 46 Cameroonian Separatists

Cameroonian separatist leader, Julius Ayuk Tabe and 46 others, some of whom were arrested in Abuja earlier this month have been deported by Nigerian authorities to Cameroon.

Ayuk and the others were deported on Friday to Yaounde, Ayuk’s lawyer, Abdul Oroh, a former member of the House of Representatives and human rights activist said.

Ayuk is the president of a self-declared breakaway state made up of the Anglophone regions of majority-Francophone Cameroon.

He was one of fifteen others who Cameroon issued an international arrest warrant for in November 2017.

His deportation marks an escalation in Cameroon’s fight against the separatists who have taken up arms over the past year in their bid to create a nation which they call Ambazonia.

“A group of 47 terrorists, among them Mr. Ayuk Tabe, has for some hours been in the hands of Cameroonian justice, before which they will answer for their crimes,” Communications Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary said in a statement.

The Ambazonian movement has gathered widespread support due to a government crackdown on peaceful protests by Anglophones who complain of being marginalised by the French majority.

Nigeria and Cameroon are increasingly coordinating efforts to deal jointly with the growing insurgency that Yaounde has struggled to contain – in part because most of the leading actors are orchestrating events from abroad.

Tens of thousands of Cameroonian refugees have flooded into Nigeria, since the conflict began.

In his statement, Cameroon’s communications minister, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, praised his government’s cooperation with Nigeria, adding that the two countries “will never tolerate their respective territories serving as a base for activities that destabilise one or the other.”

Ayuk, a former businessman who had lived in Nigeria, is seen as a moderate voice in the separatist movement and has in the past promoted dialogue over violence.

Nevertheless, he has been the target of Cameroonian authorities as a leading member of a resurgent movement to break away from French-speaking Cameroon.

In December, his family home in Anglophone Cameroon was surrounded by government troops, he told Reuters at the time from Nigeria.

“If you can kidnap someone like Ayuk, who wanted meaningful dialogue, who will you be able to speak to?” said Cho Ayaba, head of the Ambazonian Governing Council, a separatist body established to create an independent state called Ambazonia.

“This is an intolerable act. Now we have no choice but to defend our homeland.”

Tension Builds Up In Delta Over Planned Sack Of Commissioners By Gov. Okowa

Delta state polity have been heated up, owing to the plot by the state governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa to drop some alleged non performing Commissioners and members of the State Executive Council.

Although the seeming overhaul has been trending in the past weeks, shortly after the January 6 Local Government election which was swept by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the state government and its officials have kept mum on the issue.

Penultimate Tuesday, during the State Executive Council meeting which lasted till about 9:00 pm at Government House, Asaba, the Governor told the Commissioners that “certain changes are expected to take place but urged them to sustain their faith in the party.”

Meanwhile, tension has hightened in the state, following an alleged last minute resolve by the governor to sanction erring Commissioners through sack, which some political pundits claimed is overdue.

At Government House, on Tuesday, January 30, 2018, most of the Commissioners present ahead of the Executive Council meeting wore gloomy and anxious faces, unsure of who the Governor’s sledge hammer would hit.

Mourinho Stays @ Old Trafford Till 2020 In New Contract

Jose Mourinho has signed a contract extension that will keep him at Manchester United until at least 2020, the club said Thursday, ending rumours he is unhappy at Old Trafford.

Mourinho became the first United manager in history to win a major trophy in his first season when he secured the League Cup last year, and he also led the club to victory in the Europa League, the only competition they had never won.

United are a distant second in the Premier League to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City this season but are still in the FA Cup and the Champions League.

“I am really honoured and proud to be Manchester United manager,” Mourinho, 54, said in a club statement.

“I would like to say a big thank you to the owners and to (executive vice-chairman) Mr (Ed) Woodward for the recognition of my hard work and dedication. I am delighted they feel and trust that I am the right manager for this great club for the foreseeable future.

“We have set very high standards — winning three trophies in one season (including the Community Shield) — but those are the standards I expect my teams to aim for. We are creating the conditions for a brilliant and successful future for Manchester United.”

Mourinho, who was appointed in May 2016 on a three-year deal, replaced Louis van Gaal with a brief to return the club to the pinnacle of the English game.

The 20-time league champions have not won the Premier League title since Alex Ferguson’s last season in charge in 2012-13.

Woodward said the former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss, whose new deal includes an option for a further year, had already achieved a great deal in his time at Old Trafford.

“His workrate and professionalism are exceptional and he has embraced the club’s desire to promote top quality young players to the first team,” said Woodward.

“He has brought an energy and a sense of purpose to everything that he does and I am sure that will continue to bring results for the fans and the club.”

Tiger Woods Returns To PGA Tour

Legend golfer Tiger Woods made a quiet start on his return to the PGA Tour as a gallery of about 2,000 people watching his every move.

The gallery followed his every shot in the first round of the Farmers Insurance Open.

According to Reuters, n his official start on Thursday since 2017, Woods bogeyed the opening hole on the South course at Torrey Pines after hooking his drive into rough and finding the green with his second shot.

He added a bogey at the par-four fifth after pulling another drive, this time into a bunker.

But he hit a perfect drive at the par-five sixth, splitting the fairway and giving the old Woods walk, picking up his tee and striding off without even bothering to watch his ball.

He knew it would end up in the middle of the fairways, and from there he found the putting surface with his second shot to set up his first birdie of the day.

Woods remained one-under after nine holes, six strokes behind early leader Ted Potter on another delightful winter’s day on the layout next to the Pacific Ocean.

A gallery of about two thousand people lined the first fairway to watch the 14-times major champion tee off at 10.40 AM local time (1840 GMT).

Perhaps it was the relatively early hour, and the apparent sobriety of the gallery, but there were no “you the man” screams or anything of that nature, just a few calls here and there of “we love you Tiger”.

Woods is using this week’s event as the start of what he hopes will be a successful build-up to the U.S. Masters in April.

There he will try to end his decade-long major drought that stretches back to the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines.

The 42-year-old is on the comeback trail after undergoing apparently successful spinal fusion surgery on his lower back last April.

He was in a relaxed mood on the fourth tee where he wandered over to the nearby cliff to watch a pod of dolphins playing in the ocean below.

The fourth hole, which follows the cliff high above the crashing waves, also afforded a perfect opportunity for a couple of hang gliders to gatecrash the event for a bird’s eye view. (Reuters/NAN)

NFF Hires Swedish Coach, Dennerby For Super Falcons

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has signed an agreement with Swedish football coach, Thomas Dennerby, to join the Super Falcons as Head Coach.

Ademola Olajire, NFF’s Director of Communications, said in a statement that the contract also enables Dennerby to come into the job with an assistant, Jorgen Petersson.

“The assistant is another highly-experienced Swedish coach nominated by Dennerby himself.

“Dennerby, who spent nine years with Hammarby IF of Allsvesnkan and played in the European Cup in 1983 and 1985, won 34 caps for Swedish junior teams between 1975 and 1981,’’ he said.

Olajire said further that Dennerby coached the Swedish Women’s Senior Team between 2005 and 2012, during which the team played at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.

“His team also played at the 2007 and 2011 FIFA World Cup finals, winning bronze at the latter tournament.

“He also served time as youth coach for Stockholm FA and worked in various capacities for former club Hammarby between 1993 and 2001.

“More recently, he did scouting and analyses for the Swedish FA at the 2013 and 2017 European Championships, the 2016 Olympics and the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada.

“Petersson has worked with several top Swedish clubs, including Moheda IF, Osters IF, Vaxjo, Alvesta Golf, IFK Varmamo, Malmo FF, Kalmar FF and Linkopings FC.

“He was assistant coach of the Swedish U23 women team between 2006-2012 and scouted for the Swedish women national team at last year’s European Championship.’’

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the appointment is in line with the pledge made by NFF President Amaju Pinnick to get a world-class coach for the Falcons.

“Pinnick had said he (the new coach) would be a coach to take the Super Falcons and other women national teams to the next level of competing creditably and for laurels at global championships.

“He will also work assiduously with the Federation to ensure robust development of women football in Nigeria,’’ Olajire said.

Speaking on the appointment, the NFF Second Vice-President, Shehu Dikko, said the federation decided to go for Dennerby for three reasons.

“First is to sustain and enhance the Super Falcons’ dominance on the African scene; then, it is to take the Falcons and the other women teams to the next level of challenging for laurels at global competitions like the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup and; to generally lay the foundation for the real development of women’s football in our country.’’

He added that Dennerby would live in Nigeria most of the time and support the other women teams whenever he has the time.

“The contract is until the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo in the initial, with the right for automatic renewal subject to meeting performance milestones as agreed.’’

Dikko disclosed also that the Swede would be in Nigeria very soon for the public unveiling.

“The NFF Technical and Development Committee have already shortlisted three Nigerians to work with Dennerby and Petersson as assistant coaches and goalkeeper trainer.

“These three will resume work soon to start preparing the team for the upcoming WAFU Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, pending the resumption of Dennerby and Petersson.”

“The three coaches who will work with Dennerby and Petersson will be announced soon,’’ he said. (NAN)

China, Nigeria bilateral trade hits $11.2b

The trade and economic cooperation between China and Nigeria has prospered with bilateral trade hitting $11.2 billion with first 10 months of 2017.

The figure put the growth rate at 28.5 per cent which made Nigeria as China’s third largest trading partner and second export partner in Africa.

Mr Zhao Linxiang, Economic and Commercial Counsellor, Embassy of China made this disclosure at a reception for participants of training courses in China in Abuja on Thursday.

He further said that China’s total investment in Nigeria had, so far, reached $2.7 billion.

“A large number of Chinese investors and enterprises are concentrated in Nigeria; their businesses cover various fields.

“According to the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics, our investment in non-oil field is $38.58 million, which is 4.6 times of the year 2016.”

He also said that cooperation between the countries in the area of infrastructure development had deepened.

“In November 2017, a joint venture of three Chinese companies signed the commercial contract of Mambilla Hydro power station; the amount is 5.8 billion dollars which means this is the largest contract signed in two years.”

He added that cooperation in infrastructure would be fulfilled under the framework of the 10 major China-Africa cooperation projects.

He also reiterated the commitment of the Chinese Government to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation with Nigeria in the areas of agriculture, fishery, petroleum refining, mineral extraction, textile and manufacturing among others.

He also said that more than 3,600 Nigerians have participated in different training organisned by the Chinese Government in China since 2006.

The training was an offshoot of the strategic partnership established in 2005, to enhance relations and continued people-to-people exchanges.

The envoy said that more than 350 Nigerian officials attended more than 100 seminars in China in 2017.

He added that two local training courses in agriculture and telecommunications were also held in Abuja in 2017.

“This is the first time that we held training courses in Nigeria and both courses enjoyed popularity and have good results.

“This is a new beginning of a new training model, which proves that we can achieve better results through providing more localised courses.”

The envoy further said that forthcoming programmes, which would be held in the course of the year, will strengthen bilateral relations.

He said that the Forum for China-Africa Cooperation summit to be held in September in Beijing would expand cooperation between both countries.

He also added that the China International Import Expo to be held from Nov. 5 to Nov. 10 in Shanghai would present a platform for countries globally to showcase their “country’s images” and carry out international trade. (NAN)

APC’s Panel Backs Resource Control, State Police

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Committee on restructuring has recommended state police, amendment to Land Use Act, merger of some states and states’ control of minerals.

Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-rufai, unveiled some of the recommendations when he submitted the committee´s report to the APC National Working Committee (NWC) on Thursday in Abuja.

El-Rufai, Chairman of the committee, said that the committee also proposed the amendment to Petroleum Act to allow states to control their mineral resources “except when it affects offshore oil”.

The committee was constituted by the APC to collate the views of Nigerians on restructuring.

´´Local government autonomy is a very interesting subject in which we were surprised at the outcome; there were divergent opinions on this issue.

´´We recommend that the current system of local government administration provided for by the Constitution should be amended.

´´States should be allowed to develop and enact laws to have local government administration system that is peculiar to them.

´´We proposed amendments to Sections 7, 8, and162, part one and the First Schedule of the Constitution to give effect to our recommendations.

´´The section that lists the local governments and their headquarters should be removed so that local governments are no longer named in the Constitution,” he said.

The Kaduna State Governor added that states could create their local governments and determine the structure, saying that in a federal system, there should not be more than two tiers of government.

According to him, having three tiers of government is an aberration.

On resources control, El-Rufai said the committee proposed that mining, minerals and oil should go to the states after certain constitutional amendments.

He explained that this would ensure that power to explore minerals was vested in states except with regard to offshore minerals.

The chairman said the committee also recommended that there should be a constitutional amendment to allow for a referendum to be conducted on burning national or state issues before decisions were taken.

He noted that the present Constitution had no room for referendum except in the creation of states.

On independent candidacy, El-Rufai said that the committee recommended that such candidates must not be a member of any registered political party six months prior to the election.

´´We believe that having independent candidates with necessary safeguards will make the political parties to be more honest and more democratic.

´´We have put this safeguard to ensure that independent candidacy is not a platform for opportunism, but a deliberate, passionate decision, not an emotional one.

´´So instead of paying to the parties, you pay to INEC. If a governorship candidate pays N1 million to his party, he must pay N1 million to INEC to stand as an independent candidate,” he said.

He added that such candidate must meet other qualifications and requirements provided for by the Constitution and the Electoral Act.

El-Rufai said that on fiscal federalism and revenue allocation, the committee proposed an amendment to sub-section 2 of the Constitution.

This, he said, was to give more revenue to the states and reduce Federal Government’s revenue allocation.

Receiving the report, National Chairman of APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, said it represented the party´s true position, especially on issues of true federalism and restructuring.

He assured the committee members that the report would be discussed by the party´s leadership before the end of February.

Odigie-Oyegun commended members of the committee for the job and for going the extra mile to provide necessary details and the mechanism for implementation.

He said that this was especially in terms of law and necessary presidential action, adding that the report would get expeditious consideration of the APC leadership.

´´What you have done is very challenging and will be controversial, but has given the basic foundation for the building of a new nation and a new way of doing business in this country,” he said.

He expressed optimism that once the report was approved and implemented, states of the federation would become important routes of economic activities and development. (NAN)

2019 Elections: Voters Registration Stops 60 Days Before Election –INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared that the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration, CVR, will be suspended 60 days before the beginning of the 2019 general election.

INEC disclosed that suspension is as a result of the amendment made to the nation’s electoral law, although it said the process will continue, after the election,

National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Solomon Soyebi, issued a statement to that effect on Wednesday in Abuja.

Soyebi also announced that over four million Nigerians had been registered across the country since April 27, 2017.

His words: “The nationwide CVR is to afford all eligible Nigerians, 18 years and above, who did not register in the previous exercise, an opportunity to do so.

“So far over four million have registered across the country.

“The commission wishes to assure all eligible Nigerians that the CVR exercise is designed to continue indefinitely as envisaged by the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).

Crude Oil Prices Rise, Hit $80

Oil prices on Thursday hit their highest since December, 2014, pushed up after U.S. crude inventories posted a 10th straight week of declines and as the dollar continued to weaken.

Oil prices rallied to three-year high, boosted by a record 10th straight weekly decline in U.S. crude inventories.

International benchmark Brent futures were nudging 71 dollars per barrel Both crude benchmarks are up by almost 60 per cent since the middle of last year.

U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures climbed to 66.22 dollars per barrel in early trading, also the highest level since early December, 2014.

Price support has also been coming from supply restrictions led by a group of producers around the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and Russia, which started last year and are set to last throughout 2018.

“The Saudi’s and Russians continue to work together to talk the oil market higher and last night, the countries’ two oil ministers said they were working together on other longer-term projects as well,” said Greg McKenna, chief market strategist at futures brokerage AxiTrader.

“That, and the USD fall, along with another inventory draw combined to drive (crude) up,” he added.

U.S. crude inventories C-STK-T-EIA fell 1.1 million barrels in the week to Jan. 19, to 411.58 million barrels, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) said on Wednesday.

That’s the lowest seasonal level since 2015 and below the U.S. five-year average around 420 million barrels.

In foreign exchange markets, the U.S. dollar hit its lowest level since December, 2014 against a basket of other leading currencies.

A weakening dollar often results in financial traders taking investment out of currency markets and into commodity futures like crude.
Analysts said that rising oil prices would likely start to have an inflationary effect.

Looming over the generally bullish oil market has been U.S. oil production, which is edging ever more closely towards 10 million barrels per day (bpd), hitting 9.88 million bpd last week.

U.S. output has grown by more than 17 per cent since mid-2016, and is now on par with that of top exporter Saudi Arabia.

Only Russia produces more, averaging 10.98 million bpd in 2017.

The people of Ugborodo Community in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State have called on the State Governor, Senator (Dr) Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa to prevail on the Federal Government for the urgent take off of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko in Gbararmatu Kingdom.

They reaffirmed their support for the people of Gbararmatu Kingdom, describing them as peace loving and implored the Governor to mount pressure on the Federal Government on the take off of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko.

In an open  letter to Governor Okowa, signed by Pa Douglas Omagbemi (Ugborodo Community), Pa Pasco Oritsegbami (Elder, Ugborodo community) and Hon Thomas Metseagharun (The Toritsemogha of Ugborodo Community), the Ugborodo people made it clear once again that they are not part of Warri Kingdom.

Their letter was entitled; “Prevail On The Federal Government For The Take-off Of Nigerian Maritime University Okerenkoko. We Stand With The Peace Loving People Of Gbararmatu Kingdom”.

They wrote that;”Your Excellency, we the peace loving people of Ugborodo Community in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State are pleased with the total peace that your administration has restored to all parts of the State and we want to give you a pat on the back for this”.

They added that;”But we are deeply worried that the prevailing peace may be scuttled  as a result of the activities of some individuals who are against the establishment of the much needed Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko in Gbararmatu Kingdom, Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State, hence we are writing you this open letter. As a proactive Governor, we know what you have done so far to encourage the smooth take-off of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, but we want you to do more in order for the peace being enjoyed in all parts of the State to be sustained”.

“Your Excellency, we want you to educate the Federal Government more on the location of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko. The place where the University is located belongs to the people of Gbararmatu kingdom of Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta and we the people of Ugborodo Community are in support of the University and it’s location in Okerenkoko. We the people of Ugborodo Community want to go to School and therefore, we need the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko and we want to appeal to our dynamic Governor to prevail on the Federal Government to let the University get off the ground now”, they stated.

According to them;”The University will bring rapid development to the entire Niger Delta Region. Those frustrating the establishment of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko in Gbararmatu Kingdom, Warri South West Local Government Area are enemies of progress and they would be happy if they set the State on fire just to make sure that  the University never saw the light of day. But they must not be allowed to have their way”.

“The people of Ugborodo Community in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State are not part of Warri Kingdom. We are autonomous Kingdom and we are  close to Gbararmatu kingdom, where the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko is located and not near to the Olu of Warri and his Kingdom in Warri South Local Government”.

They made it clear; “That we the people of Ugborodo Community will not be pushed to have problems with the people of Gbararmatu Kingdom because they are peace loving people hence we are supporting the establishment of the Nigerian Maritime University in Okerenkoko, Gbararmatu Kingdom. The Gbararmatu people are the only people that we have common boundary with and we have been living together peacefully as neighbours all these years. We are not going to allow ourselves to be used against our peace loving neighbours in Gbararmatu Kingdom, no matter the instigation from enemies of progress”.

“Let it be noted that Itsekiris in Warri South Local Government do not have boundary with the GB people in Warri South West Local Government Area. We share boundary with the Ijaws of Gbararmatu Kingdom. The boundary for Warri South West Local Government Area is only for the Ijaws and Ugborodo people and no other people. Those claims of the Itsekiris on the ownership of the land are fake. We stand with our peace loving people of Gbararmatu Kingdom”, they wrote.

According to them also;”We want to vividly recall the letter written April 8, 2001 by the late J.O.S. Ayomike on behalf of Ugborodo Leaders to the administration of former Governor James Onanefe Ibori (Your Excellency, you served in that administration) where he accused the late Warri monarch, Ogiame Atuwatse 11, of his unlawful ambush of Ugborodo people’s  #12 Million, amongst others”.

Their letter further read;”He had told the late monarch in the letter that; ” It is ironic that you, who would not have a Trust for central Itsekiri affairs, could descend so low to seek to side-line the legal Ugborodo Trust in order to set up your fake one through your surrogate for selfish reasons. You have thrown several stones at us in Ugborodo — Escravos, and to halt the damage so far,we will haul our missiles. You will please note other offensive acts of yours in Ugborodo affairs that have destabilized the Community so far”.

“The situation has not changed even with the new Warri monarch. Enough is enough of the interference in our community’s affairs as we are autonomous. We are in total support of the establishment of the Nigerian Maritime University in Okerenkoko and we plead with the Governor to mount pressure on the Federal Government to expedite action on the take off of the University.

“Your Excellency, we want you to halt the impending fresh crisis in the Warri area being instigating by the very well known enemies of progress as a result of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko in Gbararmatu Kingdom, Warri South West Local Government Area by imploring the Federal Government to rise up to the occasion of allowing the University to commence academic activities without further delay. We say no to under development of the area and enough is enough to those always beating drums of war. We need development in our area and not war”, they posited.

A 38-yrs-old Lagos-based businessman, Mr. Ahmed Buhari, has vowed to do all it takes to wrestle power from President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.

The young Buhari, who hails from Kontagora in Niger State, said he was “ready to slug it out with President Muhammadu Buhari and other candidates in 2019.”

“I am still consulting on which platform to use in contesting but, for now, I am of the view that most of the major political parties do not share ideologies that conformed with mine and that of my numerous followers,” he stated.

National Security: Delta Govt Seeks Dialoge With Avengers Over Threat To Resume Hostilities

Following the recent threat by the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) to attack critical oil assets in the Niger Delta Region, Deputy Governor of Delta State and Chair, Delta State Advocacy Committee Against Vandalism of Oil and Gas Facilities, Barr. Kingsley Burutu Otuaro, has appealed to the agitators to sheathe their swords and come to the dialogue table.

The intended resumed programme tagged “operation red economy”, according to reports, is aimed at bringing Nigeria’s oil production, export capacity and hence its largely oil-based economy to ground zero.

Deputy Governor of Delta State and Chair, Delta State Advocacy Committee Against Vandalism of Oil and Gas Facilities, Barr. Kingsley Burutu Otuaro, has appealed to the Niger Delta Avengers to sheathe their swords and come to the dialogue table.

Meanwhile, the Otuaro-led Advocacy Committee with Dr. Chris Ekiyor as Secretary, has extended invitation to the NDA, asking the militant body to formally lodge their grievances to Governor’s office Annexe, Warri or to the Deputy Governor’s Office, Government House, Asaba for subsequent engagement.

Addressing newsmen in Warri, following Avenger’s fresh threat, Otuaro said: “As agitators, we must be mindful not to cancel out the modest gains already made through the dialogue process with the Federal Government which is still on course. Days back, the House of Representatives passed the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Bill to law as the Senate did last year. The Petroleum Industry Governance Bill (PIGB) was also just passed. These are few pointers among others of better things to come”, Otuaro said.

“The Delta State Advocacy Committee Against Vandalism of Oil and Gas Facilities which I chair, just concluded a 2-day Conference on securing oil installations in Delta State. Conference drew attendance from oil companies, government bodies and communities from both Itsekiri and Ijaw Kingdoms in the riverside areas of the state. To underscore the importance of the conference, the Country Chair/Managing Director of Shell Petroleum Company (SPDC), Mr. Osagie Okunbor, personally attended and delivered the keynote address”, Otuaro said.

“Among several issues, Conference resolved that oil bearing communities must be engaged to better protect oil installations. It was agreed that oil installations vandalism was criminal and shooting self and future generations in the foot, having regard to concomittant environmental despoliation and loss of revenue for development of the region”, Otuaro informed.

“At a post-conference press briefing in Warri, the Advocacy Committee hinted of arrangements to reach higher platforms to engage authorities of key issues raised at the conference towards resolving same. We have made contacts and gotten responses; I can tell you that there is yet no reason to be pessimistic”, Otuaro added.

“Delta State Government efforts at peace for development of the oil bearing areas is without prejudice to other groups and bodies in commendable nonviolent agitation for the improvement of the Niger Delta region”, Otuaro clarified, adding: “Experience shows that we can achieve more through dialogue than by violence. It is not only the Federal Government that needs the oil revenue to develop the entire nation. We also need revenue that ensures the modest development we can bring about. While we deserve more, we cannot endanger the environment for survival of our generation, let alone future generations”.

2018 BUDGET: DELTA PROCUREMENT BODY ASSURES PUBLIC, COMMENDS OKOWA

Following the passage of 2018 Budget, the Delta State Public Procurement Commission has assured contractors, public officials and civil servants of quick response to all requests directed to it, pursuant to the law establishing the body.

The commission has also expressed its readiness to operate a transparent system in regulating procurement activities in the state, in line with the its mandate.

The Director General of the commission, Joseph Duke Okeze gave the assurance in a chat with newsmen in Asaba, capital of Delta State during which he commended Governor Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa for running an open and transparent government devoid of financial recklessness and indiscipline.

He therefore debunked insinuations that the governor was diverting public funds and engaging in corrupt practices, noting that on the contrary, Governor Okowa has maintained a prudent approach to financial matters, while adhering to laid down procedure in the disbursement of the lean resources that have accrued to the State since he took over office in May 2015.

“I want to place on record that Governor Okowa has run a transparent administration devoid of financial recklessness. I also affirm that he has maintained financial prudence in the disbursement of the scarce resources that has accrued to the state since he took over in May 2015. I therefore find it preposterous that anyone could be suggesting that he is corrupt”, he declared.

The DG particularly commended Governor Okowa for establishing the Delta State Public Procurement Commission early in his administration, in line with what obtains at the federal level, arguing that this was a clear demonstration of his sincerity and intention to run a public financial discipline.

“We must remember that not all states have established the procurement regulatory Agencies. But Governor Okowa has shown that he is sincere by initiating the Law on Public Procurement, and establishing the commission to implement the law. This shows he has nothing to hide and indeed, he deserves special commendation”, he added.

Duke Okeze however assured the public that mechanism has been put in place by the commission to block loopholes in the State procurement activities, while also appealing to the public to draw its attention to infractions in funds expenditure at all levels, assuring that confidentiality is totally guaranteed.

“The commission is largely preventive. Mechanism has been put in place to block loopholes, ensure transparency, fairness, competition and value-for-money in Delta State public procurement. But we are also appealing to the public to let us know when the law setting us up has been breached, and I want to assure all that such information will be treated with utmost confidentiality. We shall immediately swing into action based on the law setting us up”, he stated.

How Ronaldo Was Bloodied By Deportivo In Bernabeu Rout

Christiano Ronaldo took a nasty cut to the head during the Real Madrid match against Deportivo La Coruna at Santiago Bernabeu.

He had given everything to nod a cross by Lucas Vazquez into the net, his second goal of the day.

But the goal at the 84th minute came with a price: the cut on the head, which streamed blood on his usually handsome face.

Ronaldo had broken a lengthy scoring drought to record the brace as Deportivo were routed 7-1 on Sunday.

Defender Nacho Fernandez and Gareth Bale also recorded a brace each, with Luka Modric scoring the seventh goal.

The Madrid striker caught a stray boot in the head as he powered a header past Ruben Martinez, Deportivo’s keeper.

He stayed down on the turf thereafter.

He was eventually helped off the field by a Madrid medic, while his team saw out the final minutes at the Bernabeu in complete control despite being reduced temporarily to 10 men.

Even in the heat of action, however, the Portugal star could not help but check out the extent of the damage to his face.

The medic’s phone was seized and Ronaldo looked at his reflection in the screen, as blood flowed down from the wound.

Judging by his reaction, he was less than pleased to see his movie star looks distorted by the cut!

The SI-CITY is a public-private partnership business concept being developed by a strategic partnership between the Government of Delta State (GOVERNMENT), Exerneum Resources Limited (TECHNICAL PARTNER), Project Development/Concession Partners (DEVELOPMENT PARTNERS), and HOST COMMUNITIES of Sapele-Okpe, Amukpe, Elume, Ozue and Ugborhen Districts of Sapele Local Government Area of Okpe Kingdom, Delta State, Nigeria.

The basic understanding of the strategic project development partners is for the HOST COMMUNITIES headed by the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom to provide the land resources (Approx. 12,000 hectares) while the GOVERNMENT is expected to provide initial development funding to perform the master planning of the SI-CITY, feasibility studies, branding and marketing, provision of basic infrastructure and facilitation of Government permits/approvals, security and guarantees for private investments.

Also the TECHNICAL PARTNER will provide the technical supports services in the development and management of the SI-CITY while DEVELOPMENT PARTNERS shall provide funding for further development of the SI-CITY Districts and infrastructure.

Meanwhile, a special purpose vehicle (SAPELE INDUSTRIAL CORPORATION) is planned by the Strategic Development Partners for the purpose of developing and managing the SI-CITY, thereby allowing INVESTORS to acquire or lease lands within districts of the SI-City to develop their factories, plants, facilities and businesses within the design specifications and requirements of the SICITY Master Plan.

2019 Political Brouhaha: Oshiomhole And Okowa Fight Dirty

>>We Will Sack Okowa, Install APC Gov In Delta —Oshiomhole
>>Oshiomhole Is Unionist With Limited Knowledge Of Politics –Ukah

A statement credited to the immediate past governor of Edo state and leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, declaring that the party would extend its coast in the South South by installing an APC governor in Delta State, has sparked off reaction in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) led state.

Oshiomhole spoke at the APC mega rally at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium Benin City, where PDP House of Representatives member, Mr EJ Agbonayinma, former governorship aspirant of the PDP, Matthew Iduoriyekemwen and over ten thousand of their supporters dumped the PDP for the APC.

Oshiomhole said:
¨I heard in Delta they have even auctioned their mass transit and they are fighting over who bought what. In Edo they are reinforcing. We must extend the frontiers of development to Delta state in the spirit of the old mid-west. APC is going to win in 2019 and that will be the end of PDP.”

Ukah Chides Oshiomhole Over Comments On Delta

In a swift reaction, Delta State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Patrick Ukah, has chided the immediate past governor of Edo State and leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, over his comments on Delta State.

The former Governor had at a mega rally of the party in Benin City, Edo State, on Friday declared that the party would extend its coast in the South South by installing an APC governor in Delta State.

However, Mr. Ukah, in a statement signed by his Media Assistant, Mr. Sam Ijeh, in Asaba on Saturday, said that the choice of words, especially the use of ‘ by installing’, by the former labour leader is a manifestation of his limited knowledge of politics as against unionism were he claims to be a master.

The Commissioner for Information expressed surprise that Comrade Oshiomhole, who is a leader of a party that has brought untold hardship to Nigerians, will be talking of installing a Governor in a state that is not his own instead of suggesting ways of how to make living bearable for Nigerians.

Mr. Ukah posited that with the numerous developmental projects going on in various parts of the state, Deltans are satisfied with the performance of the present administration and this was made manifest by the resounding victory recorded by the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in the recently conducted local government election in Delta State.

The Commissioner for Information advised the former Governor to first join hands with others in his party to put their house in order by conducting a successful national convention that is long overdue instead of engaging in a wild goose chase.

He said that Comrade Oshiomhole should not be deceived by fair-weather politicians who are leaving the PDP for the APC describing them as spent forces who feel uncomfortable with the reforms presently going on in the PDP.

Mr. Ukah said Delta was in safe hands under the leadership of Senator Okowa adding that those who will attempt to flex muscles with the Governor would be denounced and disgraced by the people.

He said the likes of Comrade Oshiomole were responsible for putting Nigeria in comatose thereby taking the country that was on steady growth, several steps backward.
The propaganda used to deceive Nigerians into voting APC into power and now regretting their actions will not fly in Delta State, the Commissioner for Information said.
