Release Detained Cameroonian Freedom Fighters Now –CDHR Tells Buhari

LAGOS/Nigeria: Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, CDHR has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to release detained Cameroonian freedom fighters without any further delay.

The right group also warned the federal government against releasing the freedom fighters to Cameroonian President, Paul Biya.

Speaking today on the ordeal of the freedom fighters, President of CDHR, Mr Malachy Ugwummadu said that this has become necessary because Nigeria has no extradition treaty with Cameroon.

It would be recalled that a team of armed officials of the State Security Service (SSS) had on Saturday, invaded Nera Hotel in Abuja and arrested seven leaders of the Southern region of Cameroon agitating for the independent state of Ambazonia.
The arrested freedom fighters are: Mr. Sikiku Tabe, the leader of the group, Professor Che Awasum, Mr. Nalowa Bih, a lawyer as well as Dr. Fidelis Che, Dr. Nfor Ngala Nfor, Dr. Henri Kumeng and Dr. Cornelius Kwanga. They have since been held incommunicado at an undisclosed place by the SSS.

The detainees have also been denied access to their lawyers, doctors and family members contrary to the provisions of the United Nations Minimum Standards for the Treatment of Prisoners.

Speaking further, Ugwummadu argued that the Attorney-General of the Federation lacks the vires to initiate extradition proceedings under the Extradition Act (E25) Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 for the extradition of the detained Cameroonian freedom fighters.

Though it is evident that the federal government is under pressure from President Biya to hand over the detainees to the security forces in Cameroon, the human rights activist warned against any more illegalities as the detainees are entitled to reside or visit Nigeria or any other country without any molestation .

“Therefore the federal government has no power whatsoever to hand them over to President Paul Biya. The detained Cameroonian freedom fighters deserve to be released unconditionally from the unlawful custody forthwith. “Instead of using the SSS to fight the proxy war of President Paul Biya the federal government should direct the SSS and other security forces to collaborate with the Nigeria Police Force to fish out the criminal elements that have unleashed mayhem on the people of Benue State and other troubled parts of Nigeria”,

Ugwummadu insisted that since the Cameroonians entered Nigeria legitimately their arrest and detention by the federal government cannot be justified under the law.

“As Africans the detainees are entitled to the human rights to personal liberty, freedom of association and freedom of expression guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution. In addition, their unquestionable and inalienable right to self determination is protected by Article 20 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights which has been ratified by both Nigeria and Cameroon.

“Having failed to crush the ideas which recently led to the demand for the State of Biafra by the members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra the (IPOB), the federal government should not attempt to provoke the marginalized people of Southern Cameroon by frustrating their legitimate demand for an independent state of Ambazonia.

Uguwmmadu therefore advised the federal government to be wary of any hasty decision that may escalate the security situation between Cameroon and Nigeria. According to the activist, “since Nigeria has not succeeded in completely defeating the dreaded Boko Haram sect it should not declare war on the people of Southern Cameroon and thereby further expose the displaced people of Bakassi to reprisal attacks.”

Sharapova, Zverev Crash Out Of Melbourne, Federer, Djokovic Through

Maria Sharapova was sent crashing out of the Australian Open in a crushing defeat by Angelique Kerber Saturday as Simona Halep survived a titanic struggle to make the last 16.

With the temperatures a manageable 26 Celsius (79 Farenheit) at Melbourne Park after two days of oven-like conditions, the Russian was no match for the German, flopping 6-1, 6-3 in a battle of the former champions.

Fourth seed Alexander Zverev was another high-profile casualty on day six, beaten in five sets by South Korea’s Chung Hyeon to continue his miserable Grand Slam form.

Among men through was Austrian fifth seed Dominic Thiem who beat France’s Adrian Mannarino in straight sets, and veteran Tomas Berdych who saw off Juan Martin Del Potro.

American Tennys Sandgren, who had never won a Grand Slam match before this year’s Australian Open, also progressed.

Another Melbourne Park debutant Marton Fucsovics of Hungary is also enjoying his best ever Grand Slam, seeing off Argentine Nicolas Kicker.

Fucsovics will next meet 19-time Grand slam winner Roger Federer who beat Frenchman Richard Gasquet in three sets.

Novak Djokovic is also still in the race after sending Spanish Albert Ramos home in three straight sets.

He next meets Hyeon Chung, who ousted new generation star, Zverev.

“This court is special for me and I was trying to enjoy every point,” 30 year-old Kerber said of Rod Laver Arena, where she beat Serena Williams in the 2016 final.

“I knew it would be tough, Maria is a champion, and I just tried to play my game.”

Kerber is in scintillating form, having won the lead-up Sydney International, and will face either Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska or Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei for a place in the quarter-finals.

For 30 year-old Sharapova, who is looking to rediscover her best on her way back from a 15-month drugs ban, it is back to the drawing board.

The same can be said for Zverev, who has been hailed as the leader of the tennis new guard but has now failed to go beyond the fourth round in 11 Grand Slams.

“I have some figuring out to do, what happens to me in deciding moments in Grand Slams,” he said after going down 5-7, 7-6 (7/3), 2-6, 6-3, 6-0.

Halep earlier looked out for the count against 76th-ranked American Lauren Davis.

But she finally got over the line 4-6, 6-4, 15-13 in a gruelling 3 hour 44 minute epic in a contest that took its toll.

“I’m almost dead,” the tenacious Romanian said after the incredible battle, in which Davis lost a toenail and Halep served for the match four times.

“The feeling in my muscles is gone and I don’t feel my ankle any more,” she added.

Halep, a former quarter-finalist, will next play Naomi Osaka in her quest for a maiden Grand Slam title after the Japanese star beat Australia’s Ashleigh Bart

“WE ARE NOT PART OF WARRI KINGDOM” —PEOPLE OF UGBORODO COMMUNITY TELL BUHARI

*** COMMEND HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES FOR PASSING BILL ESTABLISHING NIGERIAN MARITIME UNIVERSITY, OKERENKOKO INTO LAW

“Ugborodo is in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State, close to Gbararmatu kingdom and not near to the Olu and his Kingdom in Warri South Local Government. Those parading themselves as Ugborodo Community Council of Elders should be ignored completely”.

The people of Ugborodo Community in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State have maintained that they are not part of Warri Kingdom, insisting that they are autonomous Kingdom.

They commended the House of Representatives for passing the Bill Establishing the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko into Law and urged the Federal Government to step up the take off of the University.

Ugborodo Community Council of Elders had in a recent open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari said that the Community is part and parcel of Warri Kingdom.

But in a swift reaction, the people of the Community in a petition to President Buhari, urged the Federal Government to count them out of Warri Kingdom, describing those parading themselves as Ugborodo Community Council of Elders as “fake and stranger elements based in Warri”.

In a petition to President Muhammadu Buhari signed by Pa Douglas Omagbemi (Ugborodo Community), Pa Pasco Oritsegbami (Elder, Ugborodo community) and Hon Thomas Metseagharun (The Toritsemogha of Ugborodo Community), they insisted that they are not part of Warri Kingdom.

“Ugborodo is in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State, close to Gbararmatu kingdom and not near to the Olu and his Kingdom in Warri South Local Government. Those parading themselves as Ugborodo Community Council of Elders should be ignored completely”.

They clarified that;”Our Letter Head Carries Palm Trees, but that of other Itsekiris carries a Crown and Sword. We are on our own and we want the whole world to know this”.

According to them;”The Olu of Warri Kingdom and his numerous Chiefs should also allow the Ugborodo people  to rule themselves without influencing and interfering in their affairs. All these palace meetings with the sole aim to invade Ugborodo when we do not have any strategy yet to handle other threats is laughable. We are only good in fighting ourselves”.

“The word Olaja means king or owner of a property or thing. According to historical facts, the Olaja Orori or the Eghare Aja is not installed by the Olu of Warri and none of them are answerable to him in any capacity. The Ugborodo culture and traditions are very different from that of other itsekiris in burial rites and even where they are buried. All the lands that have been given out in Ugborodo till date is through the Olaja Orori and the Eghare Aja  on trust on behalf of Ugborodo people. The Olu has never given out any land belonging to Ugborodo because he do not have such powers”, they informed the President.

While commending the House of Representatives for the recent passing of Bill Establishing the Nigerian Maritime University Okerenkoko into Law, they averred that;”Mr President, let no one deceive you about the location of the Nigerian Maritime University Okerenkoko. The place where the University is located belongs to the people of Gbararmatu kingdom of Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta and we the people of Ugborodo Community are in support of the University and it’s location. We the people of Ugborodo Community want to go to School and therefore, we need the Nigerian Maritime University Okerenkoko. The Federal Government should let the University get off the ground now. The University will bring rapid development to the entire Niger Delta Region”.

“We want to commend the House of Representatives for passing the Bill Establishing the Nigerian Maritime University Okerenkoko into Law. This is a welcome development. The Federal Government should do the needful now for the smooth take-off of the University to put all controversies surrounding it to rest”, they stated.

Maritime Varsity: Ugborodo Community Dumps Warri Kingdom, Supports Okerenkeko Location … Alleges Olu of Warri Trying To Cause Fresh Crisis

Nigeria (Blank NEWS Online) –:

The people of Ugborodo Community in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State have said that they are satisfied with the current  location of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkeko and urged President Muhammadu Buhari to speed up its take off.

They also alleged that the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Ikenwoli was trying to cause another fresh crisis between the Ijaws and Itsekiris in the State.

In an open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari signed by Pa Douglas Omagbemi (Ugborodo Community), Pa Pasco Oritsegbami (Elder, Ugborodo community) and Hon Thomas Metseagharun (The Toritsemogha of Ugborodo Community), the community made it clear to President Buhari that the location of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko was not in doubt.

According to the letter;”Mr President, let no one deceive you about the location of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko. The place where the University is located belongs to the people of Gbararmatu kingdom of Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta and we the people of Ugborodo Community are in support of the University and it’s location. We the people of Ugborodo Community want to go to School and therefore, we need the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko. The Federal Government should let the University get off the ground now. The University will bring rapid development to the entire Niger Delta Region”.

The community added that they were highly disturbed by recent activities of the Olu of Warri and some disgruntled individuals and groups around him, urging the President to call them  to order now to avoid bloodshed in the area.

They also alleged that the constant crises in Ugborodo was always caused by the monarch and his palace through some disgruntled individuals or groups mostly aliens or maternal relations who used the palace to undo the decision of the Ugborodo elders.

In the letter titled; Ugborodo Community Is Not Part Of Warri Kingdom: We Are Not Answerable To The Olu Of Warri: You Can Fool The People Sometimes But You Cannot  Fool All The People All The Times:  Enough Of Killings Of Innocent People. We Are In Total Support Of The Location Of Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, the community, added that Ugborodo is a kingdom of its own.

“Mr President, we want to let you know through this open letter that since  the time of Chief Dore Numa vs Chief Dick Olue in a Edede land case at Ajudaibo till today,  the Ugborodo people have never accepted that they are under the Olu of Warri. Ugborodo is a Kingdom of its own and we have our own ruler. We are autonomous Kingdom. The unity of all Itsekiris should be paramount with a good structure because the present structure will not bring out any good thing. It will only take us backward. We will only continue cheating ourselves and going round in circles if we continue with this present structure. Mr President, do all that is within you to stop the oppression of the Ugborodo people as we are not part of Warri Kingdom.

“Your Excellency, there are many autonomous  kingdoms in the area called Warri, which has three Local Government Areas to its name; Amongst these is the Gbaramatu Kingdom and others too numerous to mention in a write up of this nature. These kingdoms were supported by former Governor Uduaghan of Delta State who is an itsekiri man.

“During the last presentation of staff of office to the king of Gbaramatu Kingdom, the ‘Olu of Warri’ sent two of his renowned Chiefs to represent him at the occasion thereby also supporting the staff of office presented to the Pere of Gbramatu Kingdom. During this ceremony, no Itsekiri man raised an eyebrow  including the ‘Olu of Warri’.

“He accepted Gbaramatu Kingdom as an autonomous kingdom with a king. How then do they become subservient to him? This shows the Olu knows what is going on more than his body language and utterances are making us to believe.

“Mr President, in as much as we want the name to reflect Itsekiri name, we must not also fail to look at the facts on ground. Which villages make up Gbararmatu kingdom as reflected in Delta State Gazette which former Governor Uduaghan approved? Is the said Omadino land part of the land that make up the Gbararmatu kingdom? Which the Olu also approved by sending his Chiefs to the coronation of the Gbararmatu king?

“These are facts we need to verify. If you have seceded part of your kingdom,  you should also allow the people  to do things on their own without interfering. The Olu and his numerous Chiefs should also allow the Ugborodo people  to rule themselves without influencing and interfering in their affairs. All these palace meetings with the sole aim to invade Ugborodo when we do not have any strategy yet to handle other threats is laughable. We are only good in fighting ourselves.

“Your Excellency, Mr President, secondly, the word Olaja means king or owner of a property or thing. According to historical facts, the Olaja Orori or the Eghare Aja is not installed by the Olu of Warri and none of them are answerable to him in any capacity.

“The Ugborodo culture and traditions are very different from that of other Itsekiris in burial rites and even where they are buried. All the lands that have been given out in Ugborodo till date is through the Olaja Orori and the Eghare Aja  on trust on behalf of Ugborodo people. The Olu has never given out any land belonging to Ugborodo Community because he do not have such powers.

“There are many more kingdoms inside Warri axis and they are all recognized by Government and so what is the big deal if there is kingdom in Warri South West Local Government Council and it Environs after all the same Ogiame Ekenwoli 1,  sent some Chiefs from the Warri Palace to represent him when the Delta State Government presented the Gbararmatu monarch with Staff of Office!

“Let not be cowed and our sense of reasoning be allowed to be tempered with because Ogiame Ekenwoli 1, is  about  setting the stage for yet another round of crisis with the same movement of an Institution. Omadino people must be wise   so that you do not fall prey to selfish people who do not your interest  at hearts. We should embrace peace because crisis is  not helping the development of the Community. Ugborodo is in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State, close to Gbararmatu kingdom and not near to where the Olu kingdom is which Warri South Local Government.

INEC Releases 2019 Election Time Table

Nigeria (Blank NEWS Online) –:

*INEC boss Mahamood Yakubu

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued the time table and schedule of activities for the 2019 General Elections, fixing the conduct of party primaries including the resolution of disputes arising from primaries for August 18, 2018 to October 7, 2018 for national and state elections while that of the FCT Area Council is slated for between September 4 and October 27, 2018.

INEC National Chairman, Mahamood Yakubu addressing pressmen on new release of 2019 Election Time Table and Schedule of Activities for 2019 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council Elections while at INEC Office Abuja. Photo by Gbemiga Olamikan.
Speaking with journalists Tuesday in Abuja, INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu said the commission arrived at the schedule of activities after its meeting held on the same day.

INEC equally said it would go ahead with its earlier plan to conduct the Anambra Central election on January 13.

“We are going by the orders of the Court of Appeal that INEC should conduct a fresh election withing 90 days and the position of the court has not changed. So, there will be elections in Anambra Central on January 13, 2018”, Yakubu stated.

According to him, the Publication of Notice of Election for National and State Elections would be on August 17, 2018 while that of the FCT Area Council Elections would be done on September 3, 2018.

Collection of nomination forms by political parties for national and state elections begins from August 11 to 24 while that of the FCT Area Council elections would be between November 3 and 10, 2018.

Commencement of campaign by political parties would be November 18 for. Presidential and National Assembly Elections; December 1 for Governorship and State Assembly elections and December 2 for the FCT Area Council elections.

The last day for the submission of nomination forms to INEC is December 3, 2018 for Presidential and National Assembly Elections; December 17 for Governorship and State Assembly and December 14, 2018 for the FCT Area Council Elections.

INEC equally fixed the last day for campaigns for February 14, 2019 for Presidential and National Assembly Elections as well as February 28, 2018 for Governorship, State Assembly and FCT Area Council Elections.

“Today, it is exactly 402 days to the opening of polling units nationwide at 8am on Saturday 16th February 2019. As political parties and candidates canvass the support of the electorate, the Commission wishes to appeal to all and sundry to eschew bitterness and conduct their activities with decorum. The 2015 General Election was a watershed in the history of our democracy. The Commission is determined to build on this legacy by ensuring that our elections keep getting better”, Yakubu pledged.

INEC had on March 9, 2017, announced the dates for the 2019 General Elections.

“In a clear departure from past practice when dates were announced close to elections, the Commission decided that henceforth our Presidential and National Assembly elections will hold on the 3rd Saturday Of the month of February of each election year, while Governorship and State Assembly elections will hold two weeks later. When the end of tenure of the FCT Area Councils coincide with the general election, the FCT Council electionS are to be combined with the Governorship and State Assembly elections. By these decisions, the Commission fixed Saturday 16th February 2019 as the date for Presidential and National Assembly elections while Govemorship and State Assembly elections will hold on Saturday 2nd March 2019. Since the end of tenure of FCT Chairmen and Councillors will end in 2019, the Area Council elections will also hold on Saturday 2nld March 2019. Consequently, while other Nigerians elect their Governors and Members of State Assemblies, citizens in the FCT will elect Chairmen and Councillors for the Area Councils”, the INEC boss recalled.

According to him, the decision of the Commission to fix election dates is to engender certainty in the nation’s electoral calendar and to enable all stakeholders to prepare adequately for elections, as is the case in many mature and developing democracies.

“Already, the Commission has concluded its Strategic Plan and the Strategic Plan of Action for the current electoral cycle and beyond covering the period 2017-2021 as well as Election Project Plan. The Commission is moving away from the culture of quick fix, tire brigade approach to the management of elections in Nigeria. As our democracy matures, the planning and implementation of electoral activities should be predictable and systematic.

This is all the more pertinent given the size and population of the country, the terrain, logistical requirements, the increasing number of political parties, security challenges and number of constituencies for which elections are to be held. For instance, in 2019 the Commission will conduct elections for 1,558 Constituencies made up of one Presidential Constituency, 29 Govemorship constituencies out of 36 (7 Govemorship elections are staggered and conducted off-cycle), 109 Senatorial Districts, 360 Federal Constituencies, 991 State Assembly Constituencies, 6 Area Council Chairmen as well as 62 Councillorship positions for the FCT”, Yakubu added.

He said INEC will today also issue certificates of registration to 21 new political parties who were registered last month.

Western Delta University in Year-Long Celebration

Nigeria (Blank NEWS Online) –:

Throughout this new year of 2018, the Western Delta University (WDU), Oghara, Ethiope West LGA, Delta State, will throw a year-long celebration to mark the 10th anniversary of its commencement.

In a press statement of Sunday 7th January 2018, Mr. G.O Egbiri, WDU’s Registrar said that “Though the university acquired the Federal Government’s approval in May 2007, it actually commenced academic activities on March 31st 2008.

WDU produced its first set of graduates in 2010 and since then it has graduated seven sets of final year students regularly. This means WDU has never witnessed any disruption either by staff’s strike action or students’ unrest. Also to be celebrated is the total absence of cultism in the school” said the Registrar.

Mr. Egbiri explained that “WDU offers 15 fully accredited undergraduate courses in Social and Management Sciences as well as Natural and Applied Sciences. In addition, we have recently received National University Commission’s (NUC) approval for two programmes, namely, B.Sc. Criminology and Security Studies and B.Sc. International Relations.

NUC has also given WDU approval for Law degree programme for which we are presently seeking Council of Legal Education’s approval. Remarkably, the University boasts of fully equipped and functional laboratories, the Registrar said.

The statement continued: “WDU’s Permanent Site is a sprawling 150 hectres of once luscious and ever-green forest from which an eye-catching picturesque campus is being created through an uncommon harmony between Mother Nature and the most wondrous architectural statements in brick, steel, glass and stone, giving the ambiance of a well-manicured garden”.

The celebrations will be spread out through the entire year and will involve special lectures to be delivered by top class national figures and respected Local and Foreign Academics. Also lined up are varieties of Sporting, Literary and Cultural activities involving WDU’s students and staff.

Specifically, WDU will host a sports fiesta. The university is already a sports power house; it hosted the All Nigeria Private Universities Games (NUPGA) in 2011 and emerged second”. In 2017 WDU won 22 medals at the 7th NUPGA games hosted by Nile University, Abuja.

Obviously, WDU has firmly established itself in the comity of Nigerian universities within 10 years, the Registrar said. WDU graduates are flying high in various establishments in the country and abroad, while some others are engaged in Postgraduate programmes in top-flight universities across the globe.

We at WDU are rolling out the drums in a well-deserved celebration and all universities, industries and the general public are invited to celebrate with us. ” he added.

JAMB 2018 UTME‎ To Hold March 9 to 17

Nigeria (Blank NEWS Online) –:

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has fixed March 9 to 17 for the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The Registrar of the board, Ishaq Oloyede, said this at a meeting with stakeholders on Tuesday.

The theme of the meeting is “Strategic planning on the conduct of the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation.”

Mr. Oloyede said the mock examination initially scheduled to hold between January 22 and 24 has been moved to the first week in February due to the ongoing strike by non-teaching staff of universities.

“We are unable to access our CBT centres because most of them are in the universities and non teaching staff are on strike,” he said.

“Regarding the sale of forms, about 10 per cent of the expected candidates have registered, the number of candidates that have registered now is about 283,319,” he said.

The registrar said the prohibition of materials is applicable to candidates, supervisors and examiners.

“No candidates, examiners, invigilators will be allowed to enter the examination hall with wrist watches, pencils except HB pencils …and cameras” he said.

Registration for the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination is ongoing in over 700 centres across the 36 states of the federation.

The board had advised candidates to avoid being conned by fraudulent operators, noting that an extension would not be given for the UTME registration.

Maritime Varsity: Sack AGF Now, Group Tells Buhari

Nigeria (Blank NEWS Online) –:

The Niger Delta Indigenous Mment For Radical Change (NDIMRC), has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the Attorney-General of the Federation, (AGF), Abubakar Malami now over a purported memo emanating from him on the location of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Delta State.

In a strong worded petition to President Buhari, the group rained heavy knocks on the AGF, saying he was deliberately trying to cause fresh crisis in the oil rich Niger Delta Region and implored the President to fire him immediately.

The AGF had in memo signed by H.A. Tahir and dated October 17, 2017, to the Clerk of the National Assembly, advised the National Assembly to change the name of the location of the Nigerian Maritime University, from Okerenkoko, to Okerenghigho.

But NDIMRC in a petition to the President, signed by its President, Nelly Emma, Secretary, John Sailor and Public Relations Officer ( PRO ), Stanley Mukoro, warned against attempt by the AGF to mislead the National Assembly, knowing fully well that the Nigerian Maritime University is located in Okerenkoko, an Ijaw Community.

According to the group;” Mr President, our attention has been drawn to a purported memo emanating from the Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF, Abubakar Malami over the location of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Delta State and wish to let you know that the memo is capable of rocking the peace that your administration has restored to the Niger-Delta Region.

“Mr President, the Nigerian Maritime University is located in Okerenkoko, an Ijaw community and not Okerenghigho as being claimed by the AGF. We want to make it abundantly clear that Okerenghigho is a non-existing name. Okerenkoko where the Nigerian Maritime University is located, is an Ijaw land. Attempt to cause another crisis between the Ijaws and the Itsekiris in Delta State must be avoided at all costs”, the group said.

“Let it be known that the site or community where the Nigerian Maritime University is situated has never been known, addressed or called Okerenghigho at any time. The actual, historical and legally recognized name of the host community to the Nigerian Maritime University is Okerenkoko. The name Okerenkoko is reflected in all historical and political documents and institutions including the Okerenkoko Primary School, Okerenkoko Secondary School, Okerenkoko electoral ward in all electoral documents, Okerenkoko General Hospital etc. There is no community known as Okerenghigho within and around the area where the Nigerian Maritime University is situated. Therefore, the purported Supreme Court case of James Uluba and others v. Chief E. E. Sillo has nothing to do with the land where the Nigerian Maritime University is situated”

The group added that;” People should not be misled by a purported Supreme Court decision or Judgement which the AGF is relying on. The Ijaws and Itsekiris have had bloody war. We are not in a hurry to forget the battle over the Headquarters of Warri South West that was wrongly taken to Ogidigben, an Itsekiri community, instead of Ogbe-Ijoh, an Ijaw community. Nobody must be allowed again to cause disaffection between these two neighbours. Let there be permanent peace among the Ijaw and Itsekiri in Warri South West Local Government. The AGF and his co-travellers should give peace a chance”.

“It is very unfortunate that the AGF that should know better and in a proper position to advise the President and the National Assembly has allowed himself to be used so cheaply. Mr President, we plead that you sack the AGF now for relying on a mere petition and fraudulent non-existing Courts judgements to mislead the National Assembly and the whole world”, the group stated.

According to the group also;”The contents of the AGF memo to the National Assembly to rename the location of the Nigerian Maritime University from Okerenkoko, to Okerenghigho is misleading, provocative and mischievous. His action is inflammatory, capable of causing fresh crisis between the Ijaws and their Itsekiri neighbours and this is why we are urging Mr President to throw him out of his cabinet now”.

“The Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, in Gbararmatu Kingdom, Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State should not be allowed to suffer another setback. All hands must be on deck to ensure its take off and those playing politics with the smooth take off of the University should desist from their evil ways and let the University be. The memo from the AGF who is not familiar with the location of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko should be disregarded for the sake of peace in the Niger-Delta Region. Mr President, nobody should be allowed to scuttle the peace that you have laboured to restore to the Region and this is why we are imploring you to send the AGF packing now to serve as deterrent to others who are determined to give your administration a bad name”.

APC Leader, Johnny Chides AGF Malami On Plot To Relocate Maritime Varsity In Delta

Nigeria (Blank NEWS Online) –:

Prominent Niger Delta Activist and leader in Gbaramatu kingdom, Warri South West local government area of Delta state, High Chief Micheal Johnny has condemned the purported memo emanating from the Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF, .Abubakar Malami over the location of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Delta State.

Johnny, a chieftain of All Progressives Congress APC in Delta state, in an open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, on Friday 5th January, 2018, accused the AGF of deliberately trying to cause fresh crisis in Niger Delta.

He said: “as an Ijaw leader from Okerenkoko, my position is clear on this matter, I want peace among the Ijaw and Itsekiri in Warri South West local government, we are brothers and nieghours and it will remain so, Okerenkoko is an Ijaw land, let’s live in peace”.

Malami had in memo signed by H.A. Tahir, dated October 17, 2017, to the Clerk of the National Assembly, advised the National Assembly to change the name of the location of the Nigerian Maritime University, from Okerenkoko, to Okerenghigho.

But, Johnny, the immediate Chairman, Egbema Gbaramatu Communities Development Foundation said the Malami’s memo already reported in the media, is an attempt by the AGF to mislead the National Assembly, knowing fully well that the Nigerian Maritime University is located in Okerenkoko, an Ijaw community.

Malami was quoted to have said the correct location of proposed Maritime University in Delta State is Okerenghigho, not Okerenkoko.

According to Johnny, “the AGF’s memo is another deliberate attempt to cause fresh crisis in Niger Delta, but let me remind Malami and his co-travellers in the already failed attempt to instigate ethnic crisis that we the Ijaws and the people of Okerenkoko are peace loving and law abiding, my people are not ready to go into war with the Itsekiri, not again, and whatever Supreme Court decision or Judgement which Malami is relying on is immaterial as the Ijaws and people of Okerenkoko would never accept any attempt to cede their land to anybody”.

Johnny said, “Mr. President, since you assumed office in 2015, you have made frantic efforts and commitment to restore lasting peace and security in the Niger Delta region. The peace and security that you have restored which we are presently enjoying in Niger Delta is being threatened by the Attorney General of the Federation, Mallam Abubakar Malami”.

Continuing, he said, “Mr. President, it will shock you to know that the erroneous and misleading memo issued by the Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF, Abubakar Malami to the National Assembly to change the name of the location of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, to Okerenghigho a non-existing name is already generating tension across the Niger Delta region”.

He noted that it is unfortunate and embarrassing that Abubakar Malami, who is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria SAN could rely on a mere petition and fraudulent non-existing Courts judgements to mislead the National Assembly.

“Malami’s advise as contained in his memo to the National Assembly to rename the location of Nigerian Maritime University from Okerenkoko, to Okerenghigho is mischievous, and worst decision ever taken by the AGF to deliberately want to cause fresh crisis between the Ijaws of Gbaramatu kingdom and our Itsekiri brothers in Warri South West local government area of Delta State”.

“I am an Ijaw man from Okerenkoko, where the Maritime University is located, the Itsekiri people cannot claim ownership of Ijaw land for whatever reason, therefore, the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami should withdraw the memo immediately and apologize to the people of Okerenkoko for calling us tenants or strangers in our God-given land”.

Delta First Lady Dame Okowa Welcomes First Baby Of The Year 2018 In Agbor

Nigeria (Blank NEWS Online) –:

The 2018 star New Year baby, Kosisochukwu Purity Bright has been born at the Central Hospital, Agbor, sharing the same birth hospital with Her Excellency Dame Edith Okowa.

The new born baby girl, weighing 3.5kg was delivered at the Central Hospital, Agbor in Ika South Local Government Area at 12.37 am on Monday, January 1, 2018 to the family of Mr. and Mrs. Igudia Bright who hail from Alileha Agbor.

Presenting cash and gift items to the Bright family at the maternity ward, the governor’s wife thanked God for the gift of life and congratulated the family on producing the Baby of the Year 2018.

She disclosed that her mother gave birth to her at the same Central Hospital, Agbor, 56 years ago and shared other good memories of the hospital, describing it as a place of joy and happiness.

Dame Okowa urged Deltans to seek the face of God, declaring what they wanted to see in 2018, correct their past mistakes and live a life of gratitude and forgiveness, pointing out that everyone have their destiny in their hands.

The father of the New Year Baby, Mr. Igudia Bright, a 36-year-old business man and her mother, Mrs. Mercy Bright, expressed joy that the birth of their baby girl attracted the governor’s wife to the hospital and thanked her for the cash and gifts items.

The governor’s wife later visited every child in the ward with gift items and prayed for them.

Remarkable on her visit was her decision to settle the hospital bill of an eight-year-old boy at the Paediatrics Ward, Master Onyeka Philips, suffering from a poorly treated tetanus condition and whose parents could not afford the prescribed drugs and treatment, according to the Principal Nursing Officer, Mrs. Franca Ebite.

The governor’s wife, who was moved with compassion, immediately released funds to begin immediate treatment and promised to foot the hospital bills when his treatment is completed.

0

Nigeria (Blank NEWS Online) –:

Elumelu

A former member of the National Assembly, who represented the Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Hon Ndudi Elumelu has received the 2017 Rainbow award, for his developmental efforts in lighting up the rural areas, especially his constituency, as well as the attraction of health facilities that improved the economic conditions of the people of the area.

The Rainbow award was presented to the distinguished lawmaker by the organisers of the Annual Ogwasi-Uku Carnival and Rainbow Choice Award for 2017, at a colourful ceremony which took place in Ogwashi Uku, headquartes of Aniocha South LGA, Delta State, on Monday December 26, 2017.

The award, according to the organizers, was presented to Rt. Hon. Elumelu, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Aniocha/Oshimili Frderal constituency, particularly his attraction of the Ibusa Mega Power Step Down for sustainable development.

“This Rainbow Award, 2017, is presented to you in recognition of your unforgettable achievements by helping to attract the Ibusa Mega Power Step Down for Sustainable Electricity in Anioma,” the organisers said during the award ceremony.

The former legislator, who was also the chairman of the Federal House of Representatives Committee on Power, as well as Health in consecutive terms, has been accorded with the unrivaled recognition as the architect of the improved power service within the Aniocha/Oshimili axis of the state, with the construction of the 132/33Kva Step Down at Ibusa.

Responding on behalf the lawmaker, the Director General, Movement for Democratic Emancipation, a body driving Hon.  Elumelu’s Political concern, Mr Chigbu Anene said that the recognition was well deserved, for the fact that the attraction of the project has changed the face of the Federal Constituency, which for years was in darkness.

“The Award is a well deserved one. It recognises his strives to bring down the step down transmission line to his constituency and other developmental projects like the State of the Art Hospital at Onitcha-Uku, during his time as a representative of the people  at the National Assembly. Today that singular effort has changed the economic fortune of the constituency”, Chief Anene said.

In a recent media chat with the members of the Delta Online Publishers Forum, (DOPF), in his country home at Onitcha Uku, the former Lawmaker equally revealed how his committee uncovered sharp practices which involved highly placed individuals in the country within the Rural Electrification Agency, and how his staunch stance to maintain and uphold due process saved him from indictment, when the former Economic and Financial Crime Commission, (EFCC), Chairman, Mrs Farida Waziri,  doing the bidding of some influential individuals, tried to rope him in with the allegation of misappropriating N5.6 Billion Naira, without telling the world that the amount of money was indeed an Advance Payment Guarantee domiciled in about ten banks including Zenith Bank, for contract award guarantee by the Agency.

Heart Of Gold: Read How Divine Providence Led Dame Okowa To Effect Release Of Inmate At Agbor Prisons

0

Nigeria (Blank NEWS Online) –By Albert OGRAKA:

Her Excellency, Dame Edith Okowa (right) and the freed inmate Mr. Chinedu Offor in glasses during the Healthier 2018 free medical outreach to Prisons formations

In what could easily be likened to a divine intervention, an unjustly imprisoned inmate at the Agbor Prisons in Ika South Local Government of Delta State, Mr. Chinedu Offor, has regained freedom at the instance of Her Excellency Dame Edith Okowa, wife of the Executive Governor of Delta state and founder of 05 Initiative.

The process leading to the freedom of the inmate happened while prison inmates were receiving free treatment and medication at the Agbor Prisons, to close the Healthier 2018 as part of the free medical outreach to prison formations across the state.

Mr. Chinedu Offor, who hails from Aniocha North said he was unjustly arrested and imprisoned when he came from Abuja to visit his family in his village.

While narrating his ordeal to the Delta state First Lady, who was helping the inmate to put on his medicated glasses to close the free medical programme at the Agbor Prisons, after she enquired from the young man how he found himself in prison, Mr. Chinedu Offor disclosed that he had arrived the village on a family visit, ahead of the Yuletide period but luck ran against him when he was arrested by the Police in the place of his father after he pleaded that his father should not be detained and he was subsequently detained and imprisoned at the Agbor Prisons since November 17, 2017.

Her Excellency, Dame Edith Okowa (left) listens to Mr. Chinedu Offor’s story

Moved by Mr. Chinedu Offor’s story, and in her usual humanitarian guestsure, Dame Edith Okowa, founder of the 05 Initiative sought to find out the truth from the Prison offiicials who corroborated the story and thereby made fruitful efforts to ensure his immediate release.

The free medical programme is organised by the 05 Initiative in conjunction with the Isioma Okobah Foundation and medical students with a difference from Georgia State University, Atlanta Georgia, USA, targeted at tackling common ailments facing prison inmates.

It takes a Heart of Gold to render humanitarian services such as this to the less privileged in the society. This feat has severally been initiated and effectively put to practice by the Mother of Delta, a humble Christian who hates to see a face without a smile, Dame Edith Okowa.

I Scaled Through The 5.6billion Power Probe Due To My Penchant For Due Process —Hon. Ndudi Elumelu

0

Nigeria (Blank NEWS Online) –:

Rt.Hon. Ndudi Elumelu

A former House of Representative member who represented Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency, Rt.Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, has revealed in great detail, how he was able to scale through the horrible investigation on his alleged Rural Electrification Agency 5.6 billion fraud.

In a Media parley with members of the Delta Online Publishers Forum, DOPF, on Sunday, 24th December, 2017 in his Country Home at Onicha-Uku, Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State, Elumelu revealed that his saving grace was his penchant to uphold due process in all his transactions, while he was the chairman of the House Committee on Power at the House of Representatives, adding that his induced investigation and subsequent arraignment in court by the EFCC was aimed at punishing him for instituting a comprehensive probe of the power sector in Nigeria.

“Coming to the National Assembly, I took a number of decisions; one, I will never do a letter of recommendation for anybody to be given contract, two I will not also be a part of it. The only thing I cannot swear in my life is about insurance because it is my business.

“If they had said that they gave me insurance of one place and that was what I did, I will probably find it difficult to say that I did or I didn’t. Probably what I will do is to call my people and say please cross check our books and see if we got that job or that insurance business. So that was the first step”, he said.

Elumelu stated further, that the rot as at that time in the power sector was of immense proportion and very many top guns in the country were far deep in the sleaze that led to the rendering of the power sector comatose, hence, his vow not to spare anybody found wanting irrespective of status in the society.

He affirmed that his determination to do a good job for the benefit of the country led him to stepping on very powerful toes of the untouchable in the country and they did everything possible to stop him by all means, for the fact that he was very critical about rural electrification processes in the power sector at that time.

“If you recall, Liyel Imoke was the minister then, his cousin was made the MD of Rural Electrification Agency. So when I did the probe, I found out that in every state, they were duplicating what the state was doing on paper not in reality. By duplication, I mean if I put this Electric Pole here, I will put up a sign post and call it Delta State Rural Electrification project. Then the national Rural Electrification team will come there, take cognizance of where these poles are, come for appropriation and include it in the budget of that same spot. Thus, by the time the budget is passed, they would award that contract for the same spot, all in a space of one month after doing all the necessary contract award documentation and processes as stipulated by the due process code.

“They will award and say it has been executed and the day auditors will go, the auditors will obviously notify them. They will come to that place and paste Rural Electrification Sticker, so when auditors of the Federal Government leave, they will remove the sticker and leave the state government sticker, which was a clear duplication.

“So what I did, in every state I went, I took the Federal Rural Electrification and the State Rural Electrification heads, I said, Commissioner, you will follow me, MD you will follow me and in each pole, we will ask them, show me your own. In the whole federation, we found out that, that was what was happening. So first of all, my recommendation was first; remove the MD of the Rural Electrification back to the ministry to give room for further EFCC investigation of our recommendation for possible prosecution. Of course in so doing, there were hands that had benefited.”

The former federal legislature stated that the power committee recommendation ruffled the feathers of some very power persons and that led to various strategies by them to pull him down, even as he added that the constituency project, solar street lights, which were projects he included in the budget that were his  constituency projects were used against him.

“So after looking at what to use to catch me, they didn’t see anything, they saw those projects and said i was the one who made Rural Electrification to award the contract. By the time they calculated the contract for the whole nation for rural electrification, it was N5.6bn. So the MD, they awarded the job to, they called him and begged him to be a witness, claim that he forced you to award those contracts without due process, they instructed him. But unfortunately for the MD, he didn’t know what they were telling him because it means he circumvented the law and the law of Procurement Act has no provision for influence. So he didn’t even read it, and they picked him first,” Elumelu revealed, while confirming that the MD was made to write a statement indicating that he influenced the award of the contract by the Rural Electrification Agency, adding that he equally alleged that even the Solar Light project in Onicha-Uku, his community, were awarded and as at that time it had not even been done.

Elumelu further revealed that the former Efcc Boss Mrs. Farida Waziri, also brought her own intimidation strategy, even employing the influence of family members to sway him, but according to the astute politician, he stood his ground, stressing that he was able to convince those employed to dissuade him, which even made his elder brother to take up the matter with the then President of the Country who he noted expressed surprise at the probe.

He quickly added that the action of the president did not however stop them from taking him to Court, even when it was very clear that there was no evidence of fraud to warrant his persecution, for the fact that everything that has to do with the contract followed due process, with an advance payment guarantee  by 10 Banks including  Zenith Bank, housing the 5.6billion component which was alleged to be owned by him, stressing that his persecutors, in the cause of what he called media trial, did not tell Nigerian about the Bank guarantees.

“So that was how my lawyer now took them on and now challenged them on the foundation of the arraignment, because to proffer charges on any suspect, you must have reasons to proffer charges and the court ought not to have granted them leave to proffer charges if there are no reasons for that. So, we sued them on the wrong foundation for the court to have even abinitio allowed them to profer charges. So they came and the only way to allege that you have proof to prefer charges is on proof of evidence and they could not defend it.

“All they said was that oh no by the time we open the case you will see evidence, we said this is the evidence. It was then Justice Oniyongi tongue lashed EFCC. He said look, I’m so ashamed in this country, the man did a probe, alleged that they stole $13.8bn and instead of going after those who stole that money, you are talking about N5.6bn. Let us even assume that the man took N5.6bn, you didn’t go after $13.8bn, you are going after N5.6bn.

“It was the same day my lawyer moved the motion, that I was discharged and acquitted.”

0

Nigeria (Blank NEWS Online) –:

THE Niger Delta Indigenous Movement For Radical Change (NDIMRC), has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently give approval to the $ 13.5Bn Zabazaba Deepwater Project, imploring the President to give the Zabazaba Deepwater Project to Nigerians as Christmas Gift.

The oil monitoring group made the call in an open letter to the President and made available to our Correspondent.

The letter was entitled; “THE URGENT NEED FOR MR PRESIDENT TO GIVE APPROVAL TO THE $ 13. 5Bn ZABAZABA DEEPWATER PROJECT: LET ZABAZABA DEEPWATER PROJECT BE A SURPRISED CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR NIGERIANS”. The letter was signed by its President, Nelly Emma, Secretary, John Sailor and Public Relations Officer (PRO), Stanley Mukoro.

The group wrote that;”First and foremost, we write to congratulate the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari on his 75th birthday celebration and to wish him more fruitful years and wisdom to continue to pilot the affairs of the country”.

“Mr President, the Niger Delta Indigenous Movement For Radical Change, is a well known oil monitoring group based in the oil rich Niger Delta Region and we have been agitating for a better deal for all Nigerians”, the group said.

According to the group;”Mr President, we are writing you this urgent letter on the need for you to do the needful now and give approval for the $13.5Bn ZABAZABA DEEPWATER PROJECT. This is an important project and your administration should not waste further time in giving approval for its take off”.

“Your Excellency, the President, we want to place it on record that Agip is developing the Zabazaba field with proven reserves of 560 million barrels of oil as a standalone development in the eastern portion of the Niger Delta in water depths ranging from 1,200 to 2,400 metres. The main packages in the Zabazaba project include the construction of the Floating Production Storage Offloading(FPSO) units, subsea installations and drilling rigs”, the oil monitoring group added.

It also said that;”Mr President, this Agip-operated Zabazaba project will also set a new record in local content development as the major contractors bidding for the project have submitted competitive costs and concrete plans to fabricate and integrate over 50 per cent of the topsides of the FPSO in the country.

Mr President, from our findings, Agip plans to achieve first oil in 2020 and is determined to start execution of the project in the fourth quarter of this year. We urge you to give the nod for the take off of the Project as it is too precious to Nigerians.”

While lamenting that Nigerians were being sacked on a daily basis, the group held out that;”Mr President, the importance of the ZABAZABA DEEPWATER PROJECT cannot be overemphasized. On a daily basis, Nigerians are thrown into the labour market with no hope of getting another job. We have lost count of how many Nigerians that have been thrown into the labour market in the last few months and the number is on the rise”.

“But Mr President, the ZABAZABA DEEPWATER PROJECT is capable of generating over Eight Million jobs for Nigerians and there is a great hope for those who have been thrown into the labour market and other Nigerians seeking for employment”, the group posited.

Continuing, the group stated that;”The ZABAZABA DEEPWATER PROJECT is also capable of giving employment to army of repentant Militants in the Niger-Delta Region as well as repentant Boko Haram insurgents in the North and we therefore, implore Mr President to give the go ahead to the Honourable Minister of State for Petroleum, Dr Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu and Agip to carry on with this project that will further give meaning to your administration and your Party, the All Progressives Congress (APC)”.

The group also wrote;”We want to stress that Mr President, should make history with the ZABAZABA DEEPWATER PROJECT by giving the much awaited approval to the Minister of State for Petroleum Dr Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu and Agip to go ahead now with this Project expected to promote your Party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). Let the ZABAZABA DEEPWATER PROJECT be counted among the achievements of the APC before 2019. This is going to be the first time the APC led Government will have the opportunity of shining with a project like the ZABAZABA DEEPWATER PROJECT and your Government should therefore let the ZABAZABA DEEPWATER PROJECT be counted among the achievements of the APC before 2019. Your Government should shout it loud and clear that APC is here to create jobs for millions of Nigerians through the ZABAZABA DEEPWATER PROJECT.”

“Mr President, the ZABAZABA DEEPWATER PROJECT will be a good Christmas gift for Nigerians if you take the bull by the horns and do the needful now. We enjoin you not to let go this Golden opportunity”, the group said.

DESOPADEC OPERATES SOCIAL SECURITY AND SURVEILLANCE FUND WITH FIVE OIL BEARING ETHNIC NATIONALITIES IN DELTA –SAYS GOV. OKOWA'S AIDE

0

Nigeria (Blank NEWS Online) –By Albert OGRAKA:

The Special Assistant to Delta state Governor on DESOPADEC Matters, Mr. Prosper Edo has insisted that Delta State Oil Producing Development Commission (DESOPADEC), only operates the social, security and surveillance fund which has a process that is run throughout the entire five ethnic nationalities in the oil and gas producing communities in Delta state.

Mr. Edo made the statement in a bid to correct the wrong insinuations and claims made by a factional President of Isoko National Youth Assembly (INYA), Comrade Umuakpo Ovie, who led some uninformed miscreants to barricade the Ughelli-Asaba expressway in a protest, alleging that the social, security and surveillance fund belongs to his youth group.

Meanwhile, many Deltans and commuters, traveling through the Ughelli-Asaba expressway on the day of the protest have called on the security agencies to urgently curtail the excesses of the factional youth leader whom they claim has been causing security breaches in Isoko nation, especially barricading a major highway which they described as a criminal act.

According to them, “Many traders on their way to Onitsha and those who have businesses in and around the area have been lamenting the loss of time and other negative effects of the road blockade. Commuters, mostly traders and civil servants going to Onitsha and Asaba have been stranded here since 7am. The state government and security agencies should urgently call this youth to order because his actions are criminal. ”

A statement issued on Monday, December 11, 2017 by the Special Assistant to Delta state Governor on DESOPADEC Matters, Mr. Prosper Edo reads:

“There is nothing like youth money in DESOPADEC. DESOPADEC is made up of five ethnic groups: Isoko, Itsekiri, Ijaw, Urhobo and Ndokwa. What some people claim to be youth money is what we all know as social, security and surveillance fund.

“There is no where any youth body in the five ethnic nationalities that makes up DESOPADEC lay claims to that fund and say it is youth money, there is nothing like that.

“As an Isoko man and Special Assistant to Delta state Governor on DESOPADEC Matters, I am urging members of the public to clear that misconception from their minds.

“Presently, there are so many youth bodies in Isoko with several factions and for one particular group to make claims to any youth money, assuming, but not conceding that there is youth money from DESOPADEC, is completely erroneous.
“We have decided stand to correct all these misconceptions because there are persons who will take it as the right thing for people to hear. It is completely wrong.

“You cannot on your own take laws into your hands to claim that you are the youth president of a faction of a youth body in Isoko and block government highways. It is criminal and I condemn it in the strongest terms.

“If anybody can come out with facts to say that the social, security and surveillance fund is youth money, I stand to be corrected. Let the person come out to tell us.

“In Isoko, we have Isoko National Youth Assembly which has two factions and to the best of my knowledge, it is an issue before a court of competent jurisdiction and as a government agency, we have decided to stay clear of it. We don’t want to get involved with issues that are in court.

“When the court comes out to give a verdict about the legality of a faction, then government agency or government as an institution will recognize it but as it stands, the staus quo remains. We don’t want to get involved.

“There is Isoko National Youth Assembly that is fractionized with two presidents, there is also Isoko National Youth Congress and another Isoko Volunteer Group Force with different presidents, so if each president mobilizes its group or supporters and start blocking the highways, what image are you creating for the Isoko people? It is wrong and is highly condemnable.

” I need to set this records straight that there is nothing like Isoko youth money in DESOPADEC. What we have is social, security and surveillance fund that has a process that is run throughout the entire five ethnic group that make up DESOPADEC and not some group of youths coming out to say the money belongs to them and that some persons are with the money. It is completely wrong.”

Bashorun Askia Hails Newly Elected PDP National Chairman, Uche Secondus ***Praises Gov. Okowa For Hitch-Free Convention

0

Nigeria (Blank NEWS Online) –By Albert OGRAKA:

Bashorun (Hon.) Askia Ogieh, FCNA, CrFA

A member of the National Electoral Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bashorun (Hon.) Askia Ogieh, FCNA, CrFA, has congratulated the newly elected PDP National Working Committee, led by Prince Uche Secondus on their resounding victory at the just concluded national convention of the party.

The party chieftain, who was member of the National Electoral Committee that conducted the party’s national delegate election, also lauded the efforts of the Delta State Governor and Chairman of the PDP National Convention Planning Committee, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, for organising a globally accepted, hitch-free and most successful political party convention.

Bashorun Askia Ogieh, who said the progress made so far by the PDP has endeared many Nigerians to the party, as a result of its people oriented policies, hailed the courage of the outgoing National Caretaker Committee led by Sen. Ahmed Makarfi, and the historical return of former Nigeria’s Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, saying it is a new dawn for the emancipation of all Nigerians from the gulag of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

He urged all PDP faithful to support Prince Secondus’ vision and mandate to rebuild, re-position and regain the party’s place of pride, as well as to return PDP to power in 2019 by sustaining the existing unity and coherence in the party.

The PDP chieftain further commended other aspirants who contested during the national delegates elective congress for believing in the party by openly accepting the victory of the newly elected National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus and the entire outcome of the convention, adding that “victory for one is victory for all because we all have a common goal in PDP.”

Nigeria (Blank NEWS Online) –By Albert OGRAKA:

Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa (3rd left); State PDP Chairman, Barr. Kingsley Esiso (left); Bashorun Askia Ogieh (2nd left), Senator Stella Omu (2nd right) and PDP Local Government Chairmanship Candidate, Sir. Itiako Ikpokpo, during the Flags off Local Government Election Campaign, at Isoko South L.G.A. Delta State.

DELTA State Governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has disclosed that candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the January 6, 2018 local government elections in the state are tested men and women who will ensure that the right things are done for the people.

Governor Okowa made the disclosure during the campaign rally of the PDPat Oleh, Isoko South and Ozoro, Isoko North local government areas respectively, ahead of the forthcoming local government elections.

The Governor, at the well attended rallies held on Saturday, December 2, 2017, also, thanked those who lost in the primaries of the party when the candidates for the elections emerged for putting the party first before self.

“In every election, it is not everybody who aspires that will emerge as candidate, I suffered the same fate in 1990 but, I rose up and supported the person who was chosen as the party’s candidate, today, I am a Governor; those who lost in the primaries should not lose hope, they should continue to work for the party and always put the party first before self,” he said, adding, “leaders of the party should know that this is democracy and we are going for elections, they should go to their different wards and galvanize votes because, nobody will write result anywhere and the number of votes from your area will show how popular you are.”

At Oleh, Governor Okowa commended the people for turning out in their large numbers for the campaign rally, stating that the crowd of party faithful was a clear evidence that the PDP was strong in the area, just as the Chairman of the party in the state, Olorogun Barr. Kingsley Esiso stated that the sincerity of Governor Okowa in managing the affairs of the state has increased the fortunes of the PDP.

Shortly after speaking at the podium, a PDP chieftain and Executive Director, Finance and Administration (EDFA) at the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), Bashorun (Hon.) Askia Ogieh, FCNA, CrFA, said: “As you can see, the campaign is a carnival of the Isoko people celebrating the PDP and particularly their son, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, whom I’ve just referred to at the podium as a son of Isoko land that has came back home to his people.

“We are very supportive of him because he has done so well for us. He has shown us that he is one of us. He has shown us that it pays to support somebody good and that the SMART agenda that he has for Delta is working.

“Under him, Delta is working and it is working well. Despite the crunch in the financial system and the economic problems that have bedeviled the country, he has been able to navigate the state completely out of those troubled waters and today, you can see that Delta state is among the few states that have paid salaries up to date. Delta state is among the few states where infrastructural development is ongoing in the sphere of human capital development and job creation and touching the lives of all and sundry. And for these the Isoko people are saying well done and thank you.

“For the local government elections, we are ready that these outpouring of encomiums we are doing now, we are going to show it in our votes. We will vote all councillorship candidates of the party in all the wards in the local government. We are sure to deliver all the PDP candidates and the Chairman and the Vice Chairman is a foregone conclusion because we are going to deliver all of them.”

“You can see that it only on paper and media that you have what they call APC, on ground here, you don’t find them. This is Oleh. Nobody can come out to say I’m APC. They can’t even come out to do a congress, let alone a campaign.

“We have taken over every nook and cranny of this local government. And I know that the way the Governor performed here in our local government is the same way he has performed in other local governments because I can tell you as of fact that even in our neighbouring local government of Isoko North, he has performed wonderfully well and I know that come 2019, it is just carry go for Governor Okowa. Isoko people say thank you our governor, thank you our son, thank you our brother. We are here for you now and always. Carry Go!”

Other leaders of the party in the areas, Senator Stella Omu, Senator James Manager, Dr Idodo-Umeh, Chief Dennis Etalokwu, Hon. Orezi Esievo, Chief Solomon Ogba, Hon. Ross Uredi, Comrade Ovuozorie Macaulay, Hon. Tim Owefere, Dr. (Parm.) Nelson Ejakpovi, among others, also stated that Delta State belongs to the PDP and the party will emerge victorious in the January 6, 2018 local government elections.

Highpoint of the events was the presentation of PDP flags to Hon. Itiakpo Constantine, Chairmanship candidate in Isoko South local government and his counterpart in Isoko North local government area, Hon. Emmanuel Egbabor whioe the councillorship candidates were also called out and presented to the people.

How Dame Okowa Blends God's Love With Royalty *Honours Wives Of Traditional Rulers In Delta

Nigeria (Blank NEWS Online) –By Albert OGRAKA:

Dame Edith Okowa wife of the Governor of Delta State and Founder 05 Initiative (middle) Mrs. Ebiere Otuaro, wife of the deputy Governor (left) and DG 05 Initiative, Mrs Kevwe Agas (right) during a meeting between Edith Okowa and wives of traditional rulers in Delta State in Asaba

In a bid to imbue tradition and culture with the word of God, the wife of Delta state Governor and founder of 05 Initiative, Dame Edith Okowa, on Monday, December 4, 2017
hosted wives of 120 traditional rulers from across the state to a Christmas luncheon and interactive session at the Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba.

The royal mothers, including the Omu of Anioma, HRH Obi Martha Dunkwu and other female traditional title holders, were adorned in colours of royalty, elegance and beauty said the parley would go a long way in fostering unity and cultural tolerance in the state and country at large.

The Governor’s wife who spoke on the topic- “The Saving Power of Jesus”, literally and spiritually engaged the elated royal mothers from across the 25 local government areas of the state in a uniqe interactive session, saying “the best way to celebrate Christmas was through self examination and determination to live right.”

Dame Okowa preached to them that the birth of Jesus Christ who brought hope and salvation to mankind, was worth celebrating but advised that the season should be commemorated in love and forgiveness, which the season depicted.

The Delta First Lady, while enjoining the royal mothers to always uphold the virtues of patience, love, forgiveness and positivity urged them to desist from envying evildoers by bearing in mind that Christians were the living Bible.

She lamented that trust, love, and integrity was gradually eroding from the society, as a result of the increase in rate of wickedness, adding that it was a sign that the end time was near.

“Do not to be carried away with the euphoria of the celebration but always remember that the same Christ would return again to judge our work on earth.

Delta Govt Denies Alleged Role In IPMAN Election Stalemate *As IPMAN Protests, Threatens To Shut Down Fuel Depots In Delta

Nigeria (Blank NEWS Online) –By Albert OGRAKA:

Delta State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Peter Mrakpor, (middle) flanked on his right by Mr. Patrick Ukah, Commissioner for Information.

The Delta State Government has vehemently denied its alleged double standard role in the factional dispute which caused the postponement of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Warri Depot Unit election.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, December 4, 2017 in Asaba, the Delta State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Peter Mrakpor, stated that it was necessary to put the records straight because of different stories that had been going on, reiterating that the Delta State Government has no preferred candidate.

According to him, the state government was not conducting any union election or had any plan of such, stressing that the Government role, based on IPMAN appeal, was to assist in creating an enabling environment.

Explaining further, Barr. Mrakpo said, “I was nominated to represent the government in the committee that has two members from the Ben Jones faction (the incumbent Chairman) and the Zino faction, and at the end of the Security Council meeting, the committee met in its inaugural meeting at Government Asaba and resolved that on Wednesday, 23rd November, 2017 another meeting will be held at Government House Annex, Warri, to have the verification execise.”

He further stated that after the Delta State Security Council met with the two factions of IPMAN, Warri Depot Unit, it was agreed that Delta State Government should assist by creating an enabling environment for the body to have an election on December 1, 2017.

The Commissioner however stated that by the 22nd November, 2017, the Ben Jones faction pulled out of the exercise, adding that on 23rd November, 2017, the Zino faction went to a Federal High Court in Warri in suit No HFAC/WRCR 11 2017, where they sued the current chairman and the Honourable Attorney-General of Delta State as the 7th Defendant.

“As one party has pulled out and the second gone to court, the State Security Council met and decided that it was best to put the election on hold pending when the matters in court are resolved. Until the parties have their issues resolved it is not safe to have an election in an atmosphere of acrimony”, the Attorney-General stated.

He said that the Attorney-General had been joined as a party in the suit, saying it meant that the Attorney-General could no longer function as an arbiter in creating the enabling environment for the election to hold but would rather be busy filing papers for his defence.

Recall that the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association, (IPMAN), Delta State chapter had last week Friday staged a mass protest accusing governor Ifeanyi Okowa of causing rancour in the Association following his personal interest leading to the sudden postponement of the Association election billed.

The protesting IPMAN members who stormed the state police command in Asaba to register their grievances over the postponement of their election also took their grievances to government house, Asaba accusing the present executives of IPMAN in the state to continue to hold on to power when their tenure has since elapsed.

The Association also accused the National Union of Petroleum And Natural Gas, (NUPENG) and the Police hierarchy of scuttling the IPMAN election, saying that NUPENG and the police were working together with the Exco of Mr. Benjamin Omoefe to thwart the efforts of IPMAN and perpetuate the out gone Exco in power.

According to the Association any attempt to manipulate the system and elongate the Omoefe’s executive, the Association shall have no option than to shut down all fuel depots across the state.

Addressing IPMAN members at the Government House gate in Asaba, one of the leaders of the protesters, John Kejeocha, siad that the tenure of the Exco led by Benjamin Omoefe (AKA) Ben Jones ended since last month and members were mobilized for the election and only to be told that the election had been postponed.

“Our leniency and subservience to the law has made us look stupid. We have come to Asaba on several occasions to discuss the issues of election. Election is sacrosanct based on our constitution. The election ought to have been held on November 20, 2017. We are taking our destinies into our own hands.

“If there is no election, no depot will function and filling stations across the state will also be shut down. We are also disappointment in the police for refusing to give reasons for the postponement when we took our protest to the state police headquarters in Asaba. Members have been waiting patiently for the expiration of the Exco tenure and it has expired.” Kejeocha said.

Speaking in the same vein, a member of the Association, Okiemute Okwagbe berated the outgoing Exco for enslaving other members of the association, revealing that Exco members only served themselves through out their tenure. “some of the Exco members get as much as thirty tankers load of petroleum products in a week while many members have none. We have been waiting patiently for the end of their tenure and now it has expired.”

2019 Guber: How Ibori’s Statement Causes Jitters In Okowa's PDP

0

“I don’t belong to any political party, I am now an elder statesman.” -Ibori

“Delta Governorship polls is all about Anioma, not me” -Okowa

Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa & Chief James Ibori

Nigeria (Blank NEWS Online) –:

The recent statement credited to former governor of Delta state, Chief James Ibori, indicating his new apolitical status of being independent of any political party may have sent jitters to supporters of Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa who is seeking for a second tenure in office.

Recall that Chief Ibori who was hosted at a grand reception organized in his honour by the immediate past Secretary to the Delta state Government, (SSG), Ovuozourie Macaulay, at Owhelogbo, Isoko North local government area of the state, had stated that “I don’t belong to any political party, I am now an elder statesman, my political family members cut across, so, I speak as such.”

But in what seems like Governor Okowa’s reaction to Ibori’s statement, the governor stated that governorship ballot of 2019 in Delta State is solely about the right of the Anioma nationality of Delta North, not about his personality as the governor.

Okowa, who stated this during the campaign rally of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at Ika South, Ika North-East and Aniocha North local government areas, preparatory for the January 6, 2018 council elections in the state, warned the people of Delta North Senatorial District to protect the right, which issued from an unwritten pact for the peoples of the state.

According to Okowa, since someone has started representing the Anioma already in that capacity as a governor, any Anioma indigene who would truncate the set-up stands must be seen as an enemy of the people.

Still very disturbed by the Ibori’s statement, Okowa had to abandoned the main purpose of the campaigns for his chairmanship candidates of his party midway during the rallies, and reminded his people that the other two senatorial districts (Delta Central and Delta South) had ruled for eight years each since the present democratic dispensation and asserted that the case of the Delta North should not be different.

While advising them to turn out en masse and register with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), he urged them to also come out in their numbers to vote for him during the election to have enough vote from the district.

Falling back to the main purpose of the rallies which is campaigns for the council polls, Okowa commended the turn-out, noting that they were as good as governorship rallies.

“No one will believe that this crowd came out from only one local government area; it is impressive and it shows the strength of our party at the grassroots level. There is nothing greater than a united family and I am happy that our party is strong, united and peaceful.

“Let us continue to campaign and prepare ourselves for the January 6 elections. We should sensitise our people to come out and vote. Women are very important in politics; they come out in their numbers to participate in politics. They should be allowed to contest for elective positions.

“Only Aniocha South and Aniocha North failed to field a minimum of three women for the coming elections and they will do that through the appointment of supervisory councillors, in line with the decision of the leadership of the party in the state,” the governor assured.

At the rallies, Kingsley Esiso, state chairman of the PDP, assured that the party would continue to work for the people by delivering on its electoral promises. He urged Deltans to resist unpopular political parties with records of failing in their promises.

“We should not follow parties that tell us lies. They will tell lies in the state; if the lies fail, they will call their masters to continue with their lies.”

Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, representing Delta North, reiterated that the PDP’s winning streak in Delta would continue because the people were comfortable with the party and were ready to remain with it.

“I will assist in mobilizing general support, especially the youths to make your ambition successful. We believe that as a youth, you still have the dexterity to contribute meaningfully to the people of Oshimili North because we also need vibrant representatives at the state legislature.”

'Crocodile' Mnangagwa Sworn In As Zimbabwe President

0

Nigeria (Blank NEWS Online) –:

Emmerson Mnangagwa

Zimbabwe’s former vice president, Emmerson Mnangagwa has been sworn in as president of Zimbabwe, bringing the final curtain down on the 37-year rule of Robert Mugabe.
Taking his oath of office, the 75-year-old known as the Crocodile vowed to uphold the constitution of the former British colony and protect the rights of all Zimbabwe’s 16 million citizens. In a speech he said elections would go ahead next year and acknowledged there had been “errors” under Mugabe.
He has hailed the “voice of the people” during a dramatic ascent to power. But some wonder whether a man who loyally served Mugabe for decades can bring deep change to a ruling establishment accused of systematic abuses of human rights and disastrous economic policies.
Army chief General Constantino Chiwenga attended the inauguration ceremony to swear in Zimbabwe’s former vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa as president in Harare, Zimbabwe, November 24, 2017.
Mnangagwa was a faithful aide to Mugabe, who was widely accused of repression of dissent and election-rigging and under whose rule one of Africa’s once most prosperous economies was ravaged by hyperinflation and mass emigration.
Mnangagwa earned the nickname “Ngwena”, Shona for crocodile, an animal famed and feared in Zimbabwean lore for stealth and ruthlessness.
Meanwhile, Mugabe, 93, has been granted immunity from prosecution and assured that his safety will be protected in his home country as part of a deal that led to his resignation, sources close to the negotiations said.
Mugabe, the world’s oldest serving head of state, resigned on Tuesday as parliament started to impeach him, a week to the day after the army stepped in to seize power. Crowds celebrated in the streets of Harare.
Zimbabwe’s neighbors appeared to offer Mnangagwa support on Friday. South African President Jacob Zuma congratulated the new president and the Southern African Development Community, an intergovernmental organization, said it was ready to work closely with his government.

Time-Bomb: AUPCTRE Ultimatum To Delta Govt Lapse ***Delta Line Staff Owed 4 Months Pay Arrears Dies ***Stakeholders Query Edevbie's Inauguration Of C'ttee To Run Outfit

0

Nigeria (Blank NEWS Online) –By Albert OGRAKA:

Irked by the continued debt owed by Delta state government to staff of Delta Line Transport Company, leading to the death of one of its members, the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE) is planning a showdown with the state government if it fails to urgently pay up arrears owed staff of the company.

Reports made available to Blank NEWS Online on Thursday, November 16, 2017 revealed that Mr. Darlington, a driver with Delta Line who is owed four months salary by the state government died as a result of lack of funds to seek medical attention while he was indisposed.

The state chairman of AUPCTRE, Comrade Jerry Okousun, revealed to Blank NEWS Online that the state government’s unwillingness to settle worker’s salary arrears, following Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s engagement of God Is Good Motors (GIGM) in the operation and partial ownership of the government owned transport outfit, has led to the death of some workers, just as many others have given up on hope, as a result of the economic crisis and recession in the state.

Comrade Okousun said the union’s decision to spoil for a showdown with the state government stems from the deliberate refusal to act on issues raised by the union, saying:
“We have written to the state Governor through the office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and the ultimatum will expire on Monday, November 20, 2017.”

Meanwhile, the state Commissioner for Finance, Mr. David Edevbie had on Monday, November 13, 2017 inaugurated a new committee to oversee the affairs of Delta Line. The committee is headed by the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor on Transport, Comrade Chibuzor Charles Uwajeh who also doubles as the Acting General Manager, while other members are personnel from God Is Good Motors (GIGM), Directorate of Transport and Delta Line respectively.

Stakehoders have however expressed worry over the setting up of another committee when two other committees earlier set up by the state government on partial privatization and staff screening respectively are yet to submit their reports. “Why is the state government using committees to manage Delta Line?” They queried.

The State Executive Council of the Union, during a recent emergency meeting threatened to organize a protest against the state government, should their grievances not be addressed holistically and alleging that the concessioning of Delta Line to a private owner at 60-40 percent equity share was a plot for jobs lay-off of the nearly 750 workers whose salary arrears are still pending.

He promised the staff of Delta Line that the union will not rest on its oars in pursuing the welfare of workers since the privatization of Delta Line has led to mass retrenchment, povertry and death of the workers, claiming that the unpopular action largely negates the governor’s advocacy of prosperity for all Deltans.

He recalled that the erstwhile management of Delta Transport Services Limited made giant strides with payment of monthly wage bill of N26 million with an average Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of N42 million, prompt payment of workers’ salaries, gradual loan repayment to Zenith and Wetland banks, payment of contractors and cooperatives as well as prompt maintenance of vehicles and retrieving of vehicles used as collaterals.

But a government statement credited to the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Patrick Ukah on Thursday, August 24, 2017, noted that, “unlike others who benefitted from the allocation of the government buses, Delta Line never remitted any revenue to the state government, instead the company was riddled with debts made up of salaries and wages of staff, allowances and claims of staff, contractors, and suppliers obligations.

“In a bid to sanitize the company, government sacked the General Manager and suspended some other principal officers and directed the Directorate of Transport to supervise and oversee the activities of the company, with an inherited six-month salary debt.”

Also, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Mr. Ehiedu Charles Aniagwu had during a media conference in Asaba on Tuesday, August 29, 2017, stressed that the State Government believe that over the years the Delta Line that was set up with very good intentions have not been able to live up to its expectations, both in terms of delivering on its obligation to the staff of the cooperation and also obligation to the state government who have put in enormous amount of funds in ensuring that the entity run as a viable transport company.

Although, verifiable evidences have proved that Delta Line has been used as a financial drain pipe by government to loot the state treasury, successive and incumbent governments have continued to deny the allegations.

Prior to the Delta state government’s decision to concession its only transport outfit by relinquishing 60% stake to God is Good Motors Limited through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement, Delta Transport Services Limited, incorporated over 25 years ago was established primarily as a transporter of passengers with nearly 750 workers, 38 terminals as well as a courier operation for the movement of goods and packages.

Zimbabwe: Low-Key Coup Halts World's Oldest President *First lady Grace Mugabe Flees To Namibia *93 Yr Old Robert Mugabe Under House Arrest *Buhari warns against unnecessary conflict

0

Nigeria (Blank NEWS Online) –By Albert OGRAKA, With Agency Reports:

Mugabe

The global community have expressed concerns over
Zimbabwe’s military leaders seizure of control of the impoverished southern African nation, placing longtime leader Robert Mugabe under house arrest and deploying armored vehicles to the streets of the capital, Harare.

Mugabe, 93, the world’s oldest living leader, was unable to leave his home, according to Jacob Zuma, the President of neighboring South Africa. Troops were reportedly stationed at Zimbabwe’s Parliament and the presidential palace.

In a dramatic televised statement early Wednesday, an army spokesman denied a military takeover was underway.

But the situation bore all the hallmarks of a coup: The military was in control of state TV in Harare, a significant army presence was at the city’s international airport, and Mugabe has not been seen in public.

>>Key developments:
Military in charge: An army spokesman announced on the state-run Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corp. at 4 a.m. that it was conducting an operation to target “criminals” close to Mugabe who were causing “social and economic suffering.”

>>President’s location:
The spokesman said Mugabe and his family were “safe.” South Africa’s Zuma later said Mugabe had been confined to his home but was feeling fine. Zuma spoke with Mugabe by phone.

>>Situation on streets:
The capital was quiet, but there were lines outside banks with army checkpoints at key locations and armored vehicles on the streets.

Grace Mugabe

Robert Mugabe who sacked his vice president last week in apparent attempt to give power to his wife, is being confined to his house by soldiers who surrounded his official and private residences, as well as other government buildings.

Sources suggest Grace Mugabe, who was being positioned to eventually take over from her husband, has left Zimbabwe for Namibia.

The sacked vice president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, was reported to have returned to Zimbabwe on Wednesday morning from South Africa, where he fled after being stripped of his office.

The president of neighbouring South Africa, Jacob Zuma, said he had spoken to Mugabe, who was “fine” and that he was sending special envoys to meet both Zimbabwe’s president and its senior army officers.

The UK government warned British nationals to stay indoors until the situation becomes clearer. The foreign secretary, Boris Johnson, called for restraint.

President Muhammadu Buhari has warned political and military stakeholders in Zimbabwe against taking any action capable of plunging the country into unnecessary conflict.

Buhari spoke in reaction to the military “take over” of government in Zimbabwe on Wednesday.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the president said there was need to ensure peace and respect for the constitution of Zimbabwe.

According to him, “every attempt must be made to resolve all contentious issues by constitutional means in Zimbabwe to save the country from avoidable political instability.”

Meanwhile, Zimbabwean army has cordoned off the presidential seat of power and parliament building in the capital while helicopters circled the city centre, after the military announced it had taken over control of all government institutions.

Zimbabwean defence forces seized control of the state broadcaster ZBC, with their spokesman Maj Gen SB Moyo screening a statement declaring they were “targeting criminals” around Mugabe.

In a statement broadcast overnight, Moyo insisted:
We wish to make this abundantly clear this is not a military takeover of government. What the Zimbabwe defence forces is doing is to pacify a degenerating political, social and economic situation in our country, which if not addressed may result in violent conflict.

But the statement made it clear the army had acted in response to a purge of Zanu-PF members, including the vice-president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, who was sacked by Mugabe last week, and had been angered by the failure of state media to report on a warning issued by the army chief, Gen Constantine Chiwenga, on Monday:
The situation in our country has moved to another level … To members of the Zimbabwe defence forces, all leave is cancelled and you are all to return to your barracks with immediate effect …

Let it be clear we intend to address the human security threats in our country. Therefore, any provocation will be met with an appropriate response.

Armoured vehicles and troops have on Wednesday morning blocked roads in central Harare around government buildings and the presidential residence.

There are reports that at least one minister, Ignatius Chombo, who holds the finance brief, has been detained by the military.

Chombo is a leading member of the G40 faction of the ruling Zanu-PF party, led by Mugabe’s wife, Grace, who is vying to succeed the 93-year-old president. This faction is believed to be the target of the military’s action.

>>Updates:

Robert Mugabe’s grip on Zimbabwe ebbing away after military takes control
Head of state, who sacked his vice president last week in apparent attempt to give power to his wife, meets senior military officers after a day of house arrest

Soldiers have blocked access to Zimbabwe’s parliament, some of its government offices and courts in the capital, Harare. Access to the president’s official residence was also prevented by troops, Boris Johnson, the UK foreign secretary, told the House of Commons.

Johnson would not be drawn when asked by Labour’s Kate Hoey whether or not he would support, should Mugabe be removed, the elevation to the Zimbabwean presidency of the sacked vice-president Emmerson Mnangagwa, who she said is “probably the one person in Zimbabwe who inspires even greater terror” than the current president. Johnson replied:

It would be wrong for us, at this stage, to comment specifically about any personalities that may be involved, save perhaps to say this: that it is not obviously a particularly promising development in the political career of Robert Mugabe.

The UK foreign secretary, Boris Johnson, has made a statement to the House of Commons on the situation in Zimbabwe.

He said the government has received no reports of any of the 20,000 British nationals living in Zimbabwe being injured. All embassy staff and their families are accounted for.

We cannot tell how developments in Zimbabwe will play out in the days ahead and we do not know whether this marks the downfall of Mugabe or not, and we call for calm and restraint.

Johnson claims Britain has only ever wanted self-determination for the Zimbabwean people, while Mugabe has subverted democracy and harmed the country’s economy. “We will never forget the strong ties of history and friendship with that beautiful country; accurately described as the jewel of Africa,” he told the Commons.

The foreign secretary also called for free and fair elections to be held as scheduled next year and said the UK would work to ensure they offer Zimbabweans a “genuine opportunity … to decide their future”.

One high-profile opposition leader said there was “a lot of talking going on”, with the army reaching out to discuss the formation of a transitional government after Robert Mugabe steps down.

Residents in Zimbabwe’s capital line up to withdraw money from the bank

Negotiations had been continuing for several months with “certain people within the army”, a second senior opposition official said.

The official said Mugabe would resign this week and be replaced by Mnangagwa, with opposition leaders taking posts as vice-president and prime minister. There was no independent confirmation of his claim.

Zimbabwe’s fragmented opposition has not publicly condemned the military move. Nelson Chamisa, the deputy head of the opposition MDC party, called for “peace, constitutionalism, democratisation, the rule of law and the sanctity of human life”.

Tendai Biti, an opposition leader, called for a “roadmap back to legitimacy”.

“What is key is that a traditional authority is set up which is inclusive with the opposition and the ruling party … We need a dialogue too with [regional organisations], the African Union and the United Nations. We can’t solve this problem on our own,” Biti said.

The former Africa minister James Duddridge has asked Theresa May during prime minister’s questions what support the UK government could provide to Zimbabweans to help the country’s recovery. May said the situation was fluid and urged restraint on both sides. She called for the avoidance of violence and said the primary concern was for British nationals in Zimbabwe. She advised any Britons in Harare to stay at home.

The EU, which first imposed sanctions against Zimbabwe in 2002 over its human rights record, has called for a “peaceful resolution” to the crisis. A spokeswoman, Catherine Ray, said:

It is a matter of concern for the EU. We call on all the relevant players to move from confrontation to dialogue with the aim to a peaceful resolution.

We are following very closely what is happening on the ground, underlining that the fundamental rights for the citizens need to be respected and the constitutional order and democratic governance to be upheld.

The foreign secretary, Boris Johnson, says he wants to see stability in Zimbabwe.

It’s very fluid and it’s hard to say exactly how this will turn out. The most important point to make is that everybody wants to see a stable and successful Zimbabwe, and I think we are really appealing for everybody to refrain from violence.

The shadow foreign secretary, Emily Thornberry, urged the UK government to continue providing assistance to British nationals in Zimbabwe.

Amid the uncertainty of these ongoing events, three things are clear: first, a descent into violence, recrimination and reprisals from any direction must be avoided at all costs; second, the continuation of authoritarian rule does not represent a sustainable way forward for Zimbabwe, no matter which faction ends up in control; and third, it must ultimately be for the Zimbabwean people to determine their own future government through free, peaceful and democratic elections.

Grace Mugabe is abroad, it is claimed

Opposition sources are saying Grace Mugabe, Zimbabwe’s first lady, is in Namibia. The claim is unconfirmed, but seems to partially match reports in other outlets.

The full statement on the situation in Zimbabwe from the South African presidency reads:

President Jacob Zuma, in his capacity as chair of SADC (the Southern African Development Community), is sending special envoys to Zimbabwe and Angola in light of the unfolding situation in the Republic of Zimbabwe.

The president is sending the minister of defence and military veterans, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and the minister of state security, Adv Bongani Bongo, to Zimbabwe to meet Robert Mugabe and the Zimbabwean Defence Force.

President Zuma spoke to President Robert Mugabe earlier, who indicated that he was confined to his home, but said that he was fine. South Africa is also in contact with the ZDF.

The special envoys will also be sent to the Republic of Angola to see President João Lourenço, chair of the SADC organ on politics, defence and security, to brief him on the situation.

President Zuma has reiterated his call for calm and restraint and for the ZDF to ensure that peace and stability are not undermined in Zimbabwe.

SADC will continue to monitor the situation closely.

Robert Mugabe should be removed as Zimbabwe’s president and first secretary of the ruling Zanu-PF party, the secretary-general of the country’s War Veterans Association, Victor Matemadanda, said on Wednesday.

According to the Reuters news agency, Matemadanda added that the military takeover of power was for the good of Zimbabwe.

A UK government minister will provide an update on the situation in Zimbabwe in response to an urgent question by the Labour MP, Kate Hoey, in the Commons this afternoon.

The British embassy in Harare has released a statement reiterating the Foreign Office’s updated travel advice for UK nationals in Zimbabwe.

Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa has urged the Ministry of Works, Power and Housing and the Distribution Companies [DISCOs] to sentisize Nigerians on the need to curb energy thefts and resolve power billing issues in the country.

Governor Okowa stated this when he received the Minister of Works, Power and Housing, Barr. Babatunde Fashola who led the management team of his ministry and agencies on a courtesy visit on Monday, November 13, 2017 in Asaba, said that there the need to create urgent awareness among the populace on the billing system, energy theft, reduce agitation among the populace and ensure prompt payment of bills.

“I wish to appreciate you for the good work you are doing, this consultative monthly meeting is innovative, we are happy that power generation has reach over 7,000 MVA, there is the need for advocacy to get people to pay bills, people have to be educated on the billing system, when you get bills you need to know how it was generated, it will reduce agitation. 2017 WORLD ORPHANS DAY: Dame Okowa Splashes Gifts On 41 Orphanages, Families *Urges Care-Givers To Raise Orphans With Fear Of God

0

“There is something you can do, no matter how little, help make a world of difference in the life of an orphan, by showing a little bit of love, a little care and giving a little support. In so doing, we can change our world. One person at a time.”

Nigeria (Blank NEWS Online) –By Albert OGRAKA:

As the world mark this year’s Orphans Day set aside by the United Nations, Wife of the Delta State governor, Dame Edith Okowa, has put smiles on 41 orphanage homes and families across the state by providing them with food items and cash.

Speaking while delivering the items to the orphans on Monday, November 13, 2017, during this Year’s World Orphans Day held at the premises of her pet project, 05’ Initiative in Government House, Asaba, Dame Okowa, said, “This special day aims at drawing attention to the needs of orphans suffering from discrimination, violence, poverty, deprivation from education and to encourage the promotion of rights to a healthy and fulfilled life”.

She said the day should serve as reminder to society to actively participate and help to raise the awareness, support and funding for orphans as their situation has been constantly made relevant by the UN.

In a tear-laden speech, she said: “No one chooses to be an orphan, living without the care and love of parents can be traumatizing, sometimes these orphans stay without food, shelter, clothing and even health care”, she stressed, adding that orphans faces emotional stress and total rejection in the society.

She therefore, appealed to well meaning Deltans, concerned residents and corporate organizations to show support and regularly be reminded about the plight of orphans, who she said have been traumatized due to the emotional stress of constantly living without the care and love of parents.

The governor’s wife commended the partners of the 05 Initiative who have been involved in the provision of food and learning materials for registered orphanages as well as children adopted by the 05 initiative.

While enjoining care-givers and owners of orphanages in the state to imbibe acceptable standard in their activities by registering with the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community and Social Development , she encouraged them to handle the orphans with adequate care and constantly teach them the ways of the Lord.

According to her, “There is something you can do, no matter how little, help make a world of difference in the life of an orphan, by showing a little bit of love, a little care and giving a little support. In so doing, we can change our world. One person at a time.”

In her welcome address, the Director General, 05 Initiative and wife of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mrs Kevwe Agas, said it is a day set aside by the UN to remember orphans, “to draw our attention that there a lot of children that are orphans as a result of wars and earthquakes”.

She said some of the children were orphans as a result of situations that were not their faults, “a day like this is a day for us to remember these children in orphanages that people have set their lives aside to ensure that they have a future”.

In his thought provoking exaltation, Pastor Olutosin Sedeinde sermonized from Lamentations 5: 3, James 1: 27, Deuteronomy 14:39 and Matthew 25: 32-40, saying that there is a Godly reward for this who support the less privileged, especially orphans.

He also called for the sensitization of members of the public through counseling, to desist from acts of abandoning children to orphanages.

Mrs. Pat Enechete, in her health talk, expounded on care-giving through physical, social, educational and spiritual means for effective child development and growth.

Speaking in an interview, the representative of St Barnabas Orphanage home, Cable Point, Oshimili South local government council, Christian Okonji, said the home was amazed at the sight of the items given to them.

Pastor Emmanuel Oletu, Children Revolutionary Foundation, Irri, Isoko South local government area, said the gifts given to his foundation is quite overwhelming, “God has positioned the wife of the governor to be there in order to make these food items available for the less privilege, is impactful”.

Mrs Ogbo Josephine of Kings Kids Compassion Home, Warri, said she was grateful to the governor’s wife who made herself an extension of God’s hands to them.

According to her, “it is a blessing to us because the eldest of the orphans has graduated from higher institution and has completed the one year NYSC while four others just got admission to higher institutions; we have been on for 25 years now”.

Mr Kenneth Imadiagben, who is presently taking care of four children belonging to late pastor Martins who died with his wife in an accident, said God would continue to bless Dame Okowa for putting smile on the faces of children.

On the challenges he faces in caring for the children, the pastor said, “all challenges have been taken care of by God because I believe solely in God. They are my children, whatever my children wear, that is what they wear.

Highpoint of the event was the special presentation of food items to 41 orphanages, drawn from the 25 local government areas of the state and three families.

Items distributed to the beneficiaries include bags of rice, garri and beans; tubers of yam, vegetable and palm oil; cartons of tomatoes, crayfishes and indomie among others.

Thirty eight registered orphanages and three families received food and cash donations.

The world orphans day is set aside by the United Nations on the second Monday of November each year to raise sympathy to the plight of orphans across the world.
