Chief Emma Ejiofor, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta North, has expressed strong support for Senator Ned Nwoko’s potential defection to the APC, emphasizing that anyone opposed to Nwoko’s move likely has personal interests or hidden agenda.

In an appearance on LeapTV, an online television, Ejiofor stated that Senator Nwoko’s entry into the party would strengthen the APC’s position in Delta State, noting that the region now has three APC senators, which provides a strategic advantage.

Though Ejiofor explained that Senator Nwoko is still in the process of consultations before making a final decision, he said the Senator is welcomed by APC members in the region.

He described Nwoko as a team player with deep understanding of the political dynamics in Delta North.

Ejiofor further emphasized that if Nwoko’s current party is not serving the interests of his constituents, it makes sense for him to seek a platform that prioritizes those interests.

The APC chieftain also acknowledged that many politicians in the APC, Labour Party, and other parties had previously been members of the PDP before switching allegiances.

He portrayed Nwoko as a skilled and strategic politician who knows how to navigate the political landscape and achieve the goal he set for his people.

On the topic of Anioma state creation, Ejiofor affirmed its feasibility, expressing strong support for the initiative, which he believes would bring development closer to the people.

Ejiofor also addressed the resistance to Senator Nwoko by some political figures, attributing it to political bigwigs who fear losing their comfortable positions of control.

According to Ejiofor, the main issue isn’t the state creation itself but the threat of losing political control.

Ejiofor expressed confidence that the APC is poised to take control of Delta State in the 2027 elections, stressing the importance of inclusivity in the party’s approach to politics.

He emphasized that the people of Anioma, not some political bigwigs who are already in comfort zones, will ultimately determine the future direction of the region.

The renewed quest for the creation of Anioma state championed by Senator Ned Nwoko representing Delta North Senatorial District at the National got a boost weekend at Asaba,Delta state capital as a pressure group known as De Believers organization emerged to help drive the Anioma agenda.

Over 200 socio -cultural and sectarian groups including traditional institution, youth bodies,faith based institutions and civil society organizations across the country have earlier formed a bulwark in solidarity with Senator Ned Nwoko towards the actualization of Anioma,following a bill the outstanding federal lawmaker initiated last year on the floor of the Senate

At the inauguration of the De Believers group at Asaba ,stakeholders drawn from various communities in the 9 local government areas of Delta North and different political affiliations affirmed their support to Senator Nwoko’s advocacy for the creation of Anioma.

The convener of De Believers group Hon. Nicholas Ossai Ossai ,former member of House of Representatives ,Ndokwa/ Ukwuani federal constituency said the body stands in the forefront of Anioma state creation movement and aligned strongly with the ” patriotic and noble efforts ” Senator Ned Nwoko who had rekindled the age old quest spanning over 50 years.

Hon Ossai Ossai noted that Anioma remained a compelling historical desire acceptable to all as the pathway to social , economic and political Renaissance of Anioma people.

He commended Senator Ned Nwoko for “his foresight and doggedness in igniting the glow of Anioma agitation” and urged unity and oneness from all to make the dream a reality.

Speaking in an interview, the head Senator Ned Nwoko senatorial office Asaba, High Chief Ugo Asibelue said Senator Nwoko was “selflessly and irrevocably committed to the actualization of Anioma which culminated in the much celebrated Anioma stakeholders summit held last year at the Delta state capital.

Various stakeholders at the maiden meeting of the De Believers group called for cooperation from all quarters and said the Anioma movement was a proper step towards ensuring equitable representation and balanced regional development.

They further noted that creating additional states, including Anioma State will not only bring equality in the region but also address issues like insecurity, hunger, poverty and unemployment.

The group commended Senator Ned Nwoko for his impactful representation and pushing the bill for Anioma State Creation project which has garnered significant backing from thousands of stakeholders within and outside the State.

The principle of power rotation is a healthy convention that fosters fairness, equity, and inclusive growth.

Delta State’s power rotation model, wherein the governorship alternates among the three senatorial districts, Delta North, Delta Central, and Delta South stands as a stellar example. This arrangement has promoted equity, stability, and balanced development, ensuring that each district has the opportunity to produce a governor.

Within the Aniocha/Oshimili constituency, until the recent emergence of Hon Lawrence Ngozi Okolie from Oshimili South, Aniocha North and South have more often held the House of Representatives seat since 1999.In the saddle were Hon Paschal Adigwe (South)Hon Joan Onyemechi{South)Hon Ned Nwoko(North),with Hon. Ndudi Elumelu being a prominent representative. While the various leaderships and contributions are undeniably commendable, the prolonged representation by Aniocha North and South local governments raises pertinent questions about fairness and equity within the constituency.

Adopting power rotation in the Aniocha/Oshimili constituency presents a range of significant benefits. One of the foremost advantages is the promotion of equity and fairness. By embracing this practice, leadership opportunities are distributed more evenly across all local governments, ensuring that no single area dominates representation.

Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, said the State Government does not owe contractors because Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was determined to ensure quality and timely delivery of projects across the state.

Aniagwu disclosed this yesterday during the inspection of multiple road projects in Sapele metropolis, including the failed portions of the Okirighwre – Benin Road, Okirighwre – Amukpe Road, Shell Road Extension, and Hausa Road Extension.

Aniagwu, who was accompanied by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Festus Ahon, commended property owners on the right of way for cooperating with the government to ensure quality road construction in the overall interest of the public.

“He said, “I am happy that the contractors themselves are on site and they are also progressing speedily. You do know that my boss, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has made it clear that we will not owe contractors.

“As we are mobilizing them, we are paying for certificates and all: so, what we expect from them is to reciprocate that gesture coming from the government.

“We realize that what exists between us and these contractors is partnership, a partnership that must work. As a government, we represent the people of Delta in that partnership.

Aniagwu added, “What we owe them is to be able to pay them for the jobs they are doing, and what they owe us is to be able to deliver according to specification, and also on schedule.

“So, the reason why we are visiting these projects is to ensure that
this partnership is working, and that is to the extent that the contractor is expected to deliver according to specification as stated in the Bill of Engineering Measurement.

“We are very, very particular about those quantities because those quantities control the amount of funds that we usually deploy for the construction of these different projects.

“We have pointed out a number of some areas where they need to make amends. In some places, we have informed them that they need to demolish certain aspects of their drains, and that is with immediate effect.

“But, on the whole, we are impressed with the speed of work and the fact that they are indeed also realizing that that partnership must work.

“The Governor has made it very clear that on no account are we going to sacrifice quality on the altar of friendship and that I have also cautioned those who work with me to ensure that the highest engineering standards are maintained.”

The Founder of the group and former House of Representatives aspirant in the state, Hon Chuks Frank Asuai, gave the commendation while speaking on the recent increase in oil production to over one million barrels per day.

Him Asuai noted that the significant increased counts not have been possible without the Ingenuity of none state actors, especially Tompolo’s Tantita Security Services Limited, in checkmating oil theft in the high sea.

He said the ability of Chief Ekpemupolo’s firm to maintain high professional standards of pipeline surveillance, in collaboration with the Nigerian Navy and other conventional security outfits, was the magic wand that shore up oil production, with prospects to hit two million bpd in the nearest future.

The Member Representing Delta North at National Assembly, Senator Ned Nwoko has bagged “Most Outstanding Legislator Award” in Nigeria with a promise to continue to advocate for good governance.

Presenting the award to the distinguished Senator at his resident in his hometown, Anioch North, the chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists, Delta state council, Comrade Churchill Oyowe alongside the state secretary, Comrade Victor Sorokwu said the award was to recognize him of his selfless contributions to good governance, humanity, and development.

In his response to the award, the distinguished Senator appreciated the Union for recognizing the role he played in the upper chamber.

He said, he would continue to advocate for good governance, adding that “being chosen as the MOST OUTSTANDING LEGISLATOR among many others is an encouragement to do more.

The media has been awash with repetitive allegations of poor performance by member representing Aniocha/Oshimili federal constituency of Delta State in the Nigerian National Assembly, Hon. Ngozi Okolie.

This persistent barrage of criticism seems like a broken record, leaving one to wonder why some individuals have suddenly targeted him. The situation bears an uncanny resemblance to the biblical tale of “the hand of Esau and the voice of Jacob,” where deception and manipulation are employed to achieve a hidden agenda.

Media trials are unethical, unhealthy, and often used as a means to attract attention. Rather than focusing on constructive criticism, some individuals resort to character assassination, mudslinging, and avoidable acrimonies. This approach not only undermines the integrity of our political system but also creates unnecessary tension among stakeholders.

As concerned citizens of Aniocha/Oshimili, we should strive to promote a culture of constructive criticism, acknowledging the achievements of our leaders while addressing areas that require improvement. It’s essential to recognize that every politician undergoes a vetting process before being allowed to contest, ensuring that candidates meet specific requirements and standards.

In light of this, “holier-than-thou” criticism should be jettisoned. Rather than indulging in destructive criticism, it would be more honorable for individuals to prepare for the 2027 elections. This approach would demonstrate a genuine commitment to democratic participation and a willingness to engage in constructive dialogue.

Let us channel our energies into promoting a positive image and culture, engaging in civil discussions, and working towards repositioning our politicians for the greater good. Few appointees of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State ever anticipated that project inspections would feature on a Sunday itinerary. However, that was exactly what happened last Sunday when, after church service, the Governor embarked on an unscheduled inspection of projects within Asaba and its environs.

At the proposed Asaba International Market, Governor Oborevwori assured that the state would experience accelerated project delivery in 2025. He noted that the site which was formerly the Abraka Market, had become a hotspot for criminal activities, before the state government relocated the market to Oko.

“The State Government decided to relocate the market to Oko and we have made arrangements with Efab Properties Limited to develop this place.

“The state government is getting 20 percent because we are providing land and they are to build and allocate but we will get 20 percent from it and it’s something that we encourage”, he said.

At the Asaba Waterfront City Project, on Tuesday, Governor Oborevwori, said that it was conceived by the previous administration through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. He said the state government’s role was to construct a 6-lane access road to the new city, while the developers were expected to develop the city.

He said: “Asaba is becoming very attractive to property developers who are coming from Lagos to Asaba because Asaba today is housing most of those people from the South-East. They are coming here because they find Asaba very comfortable and they know that we are also hospitable.

“The Asaba Waterfront City Project is a Public/ Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement between the state government and the developers.

“Our obligation is to reclaim the place to give them an access route, a six-lane access road, to this place. They have done about 20 percent of this job; the challenge they are having is the buildings on the right of way.

“We have released money for compensation to the property owners and we have also released funds to the contractor for the project. They have assured us they will complete the road project in July; so, I have come here to look at the work that has been done and I am happy that they are on site.”

At the Oko-Amakom to Oko-Obiakpu main alignment road, the governor said, “this road is very important to the people of Oko; it is one meter above the 2012 flood level and the people sought refuge on the road during the last flood.

“The contractor has assured us that the project will be completed in June/July this year. What we are spending here on this road is much more than what we would have spent in constructing a 10km road elsewhere because of the terrain.

“It is our strong commitment towards opening up rural areas to enhance the economic development of our rural dwellers.”

On the Marine Road, Off Cable Point Road, Asaba, Governor Oborevwori said the road was very vital to the people of Asaba because goods are ferried from across the River Niger.

He assured that the State Government was working hard to clean up Asaba, stressing, “we want the best for them and I believe that this year a lot will change.”

Governor Oborevwori also inspected the ongoing construction work on Leo Okonweze and Odozi-Obodo streets, off Ezenei Avenue, in Asaba, and urged the contractors to expedite completion of the projects.

…Vows to sanction erring contractors

Also on Tuesday, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori reiterated that he was out for erring contractors who execute shoddy jobs for the state and vowed severe sanctions for them and site engineers who okay shoddy jobs for payment.

Governor Oborevwori issued the warning shortly after inspecting the Achalla-Ibusa Road being executed by the state government. The Governor, who frowned at the poor quality drainage executed by the contractor handling the project, reiterated that his administration would not tolerate any shoddy job.

He disclosed that his decision to inspect the project stemmed from an unsatisfactory feedback he had received from individuals that he had previously sent to evaluate the project.

Governor Oborevwori, who also inspected the recently completed internal roads road in the 63 Brigade Barracks of the Nigerian Army in Aboh-Ogwashi, applauded the contractor for the speedy execution of the project for which, he said, was awarded three months ago.

“We awarded this project three months ago, and I am pleased to commend the contractor for doing an excellent job. This road will encourage further development, allowing the Army to proceed with building structures in the area,” he said.

Other projects inspected by the Governor included the gully erosion site along Okpanam-Ibusa bypass, the perimeter fence and road around Asaba International Airport as well as Kwekagbor Layout, opposite Summit Junction, Asaba.

…urges Nigerians to support families of fallen heroes

On Wednesday, the Governor participated in the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony held at the Cenotaph in Asaba and urged Nigerians to support families of fallen heroes.

Governor Oborevwori, who led other top government functionaries, military, and paramilitary personnel to lay wreaths in honour of the nation’s fallen heroes, said: “My prayer is for God to grant the souls of our fallen heroes eternal rest and also to console with their families,” the governor said.

“I want to reassure their families that they will never be neglected. Whichever way we can support them, we will continue to support the widows and also those in the forefront today”.

…Says he won’t sacrifice quality jobs for friendship

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Thursday, said his administration’s priority remained the delivery of quality projects aimed at giving value to the people, regardless of personal relationships.

Speaking during the inspection of multiple projects in Asaba, the state capital, Governor Oborevwori emphasized that competence, integrity and value- for- money were critical to his administration’s M.O.R.E Agenda.

The projects inspected included Ogbeosonwe Ogbeilo road, Ogbogonogo market storm drainage project and Ogbe-Ofu Road, off Jarret Road, Cable Point, Asaba.

Others are the Amaechi Agusi Street with 10 adjoining streets, Dorah Allanah Street, Oluu Street, Burutu Drive, off Infant Jesus Road, Odilison Junior Crescent, Agbogun Close, Ngozi Odiaka Avenue, Aloy Isomede Street, Ezeobi Ojukwu Street, and Ajudua Street, Okpanam, Aretha Table Water Street, Off NTA Road, Asaba, and Redeemer’s Street Asaba.

Governor Oborevwori said, “I was elected to serve the people of Delta, not to please a select few. Friendship cannot, and will, not, take precedence over the quality of projects we provide for the people.

“Contractors in the state know that; I have always emphasized the need for quality jobs but the people who are causing this problem are not the big companies; it is some of our indigenous contractors that are causing these problems.”

…Says actions guided by Delta’s overall interests

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Friday, said all his actions as governor were guided by the interest of the people and assured that no one would short change the state under his watch.

Oborevwori disclosed this at the 50th birth anniversary thanksgiving of the Majority Leader of the Delta State House of Assembly, Engr Emeka Nwaobi, at St. Paul’s Catholic Cathedral, Issele-Uku, Aniocha North Local Government Area of the state.

While commending the celebrant on his empowerment programme for the people, Governor Oborevwori urged people in authority to always remember the widows and the other less- privileged persons in the society.

He said; “As people in authority, we must do what we will be remembered for; so, I am happy that you are empowering people from your constituency.

“We have so many people today who don’t want the progress of this state. What we are doing now some people are not happy because they feel we want to outshine them.

“But we will always do what the people want; for us, it is the people first, Delta first. All these positions are temporary; the thing you will be remembered for is the service you rendered and I am doing my own now.

“Like I told people, the state’s contractors, nobody is my friend because the people who voted for me want the best from me.

“It is me, the people, will ask questions, not you as a contractor; so, some people may not be happy, but that is their business. At the end, I will be remembered for the good things that I achieved for them.”

Nigeria has officially accepted to join BRICS as a partner country.

The Nigeria’s acceptance to join the group was communicated in a statement on Saturday by the acting spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa.

The statement read: “The Federal Government of Nigeria has accepted the invitation to join BRICS as a partner country. The formal acceptance to participate as a partner country underscores Nigeria’s commitment to fostering international collaboration, leveraging economic opportunities, and advancing strategic partnerships that align with Nigeria’s development objectives.

“BRICS, as a collective of major emerging economies, presents a unique platform for Nigeria to enhance trade, investment, and socio-economic cooperation with member countries.”

The statement added that: “Nigeria is poised to leverage this platform to advance shared goals in trade and investment, energy security, infrastructure development, technology, and climate change. This partnership also aligns with our national aspirations for inclusive growth, regional integration, and active participation in shaping a fair and equitable global economic order in line with our ethos of strategic autonomy.

“Nigeria looks forward to engaging constructively with BRICS members to drive innovation, foster people-to-people exchanges in line with our national interests and strategic priorities.”

…My covenant to do more for Deltans stands

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has said that he had no plans to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stressing that his covenant to do more for Deltans stands.

The Governor spoke through the State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu at a live television programme monitored in Asaba.

He said those peddling the rumours that Governor Oborevwori wants to move to the All Progressives Congress (APC) were only wishing that he comes to swell up their ranks.

“Governor Oborevwori is not only a proud member of the PDP and remains a leader of PDP, both in Delta and in Nigeria.

“He is also a performing governor who has also been able to show that he can be regarded as the poster governor for the PDP. And so those who are wishing that he is jumping ship, we want to tell them that Oborevwori is not in the business of jumping.

“Apart from that, I am also happy that even following your recognition and by way of nomination as among those who are performing, that Oborevwori is trying to let Nigerians know that the PDP have the strength to deliver, even as we continue to cooperate with the president of Nigeria, because at the moment he does not have any opponent as a president.

“When the governor declared that he needed to support the president, even as they support the governor for the purpose of bringing good governance, it was in the spirit of patriotism not on the platform of looking for where to jump to.

“Today, Tinubu is the president of Nigeria, and I know nobody is contesting that and so if Tinubu does not have an opponent as a President, because he is no longer a presidential candidate, when in 2027, and we are going into election, we can begin to talk about those who want to challenge Tinubu.

Today, he is the president. We have an enlightened self-interest that the success of Tinubu cascades into the success of any governor in Nigeria.

“In Delta, we are not in the business of fighting constitutional authority. We’re always in the business of supporting those in authority, because by so doing, we are also bringing development to our people.

“Oborevwori remains in the PDP, he did not even dream, not to talk of the reality of leaving the party. Those who are rumoring, like you said, are very free to rumor and are very free to wish, wish is very free, that he comes to swell up their party but for us in the PDP, we know that Oborevwori will remain a poster governor.”

On developments in the state, Aniagwu said Governor Oborevwori was fulfilling his administration’s promise to deliver more projects for the people.

He remarked that while continuing and completing inherited projects, his administration has also initiated and completed lots of projects across the three Senatorial districts.

He listed some of the legacy projects to include the Beneku bridge in Ndokwa East, Orere bridge in Ughelli South, Ayakoromo bridge in Burutu LGA, Trans-Warri Roads and bridges as well as Warri and Effurun flyovers being executed by Julius Berger.

“Aside these laudable projects, we have several completed road projects like the Emevor-Orogun road, Okpanam-Ibusa bypass, Isheagu-Ewulu Road, Ezesi road dualisation in Orerokpe as well as Ohorhe-Adagbrasa-Ugolo-Okuodiete road among others.”

His suggestion to shut out Aniocha/Oshimili federal constituency from contesting the Senate seat in 2027 cannot, by any measure, be considered equitable or just.

Let’s assume, for argument’s sake, that all three blocs in Delta North—Ndokwa, Ika, and Aniocha/Oshimili—have had their fair turns in the Senate. Ndokwa took the first 12 years, followed by Ika, which also had a four-year Senate tenure under Okowa before proceeding to dominate the governorship for eight years. Meanwhile, Aniocha/Oshimili has not enjoyed any proportional power share in the state government or at the federal level in decades. How, then, can this glaring imbalance be ignored, and why should Aniocha/Oshimili continue to bear the weight of marginalization?

Nwaoboshi’s position becomes even more troubling when juxtaposed with Governor Okowa’s administration, which prioritized the Ika nation’s development over other Anioma blocs. Under Okowa, Ika experienced significant infrastructure growth, while Aniocha/Oshimili suffered neglect. Ndokwa, despite some neglect, was compensated with the deputy speakership in the Delta State House of Assembly for eight consecutive years. During this time, Aniocha/Oshimili had no significant representation in either the executive or legislative arms of government.

For someone who preaches equity, Nwaoboshi’s suggestion is nothing short of a contradiction. Aniocha/Oshimili has always supported other blocs in the spirit of fairness, including backing Okowa’s governorship bid, yet they have received little in return. Now, Ndokwa boasts the Deputy Governor’s position in Delta State, further complicating the idea of fairness if they also given the senatorial seat in 2027. Wouldn’t this arrangement unfairly marginalize Aniocha/Oshimili even further?

As a former Delta State PDP Chairman and two-term senator, his record is far from being impressive. In the same spirit of fairness, Ika leaders should support Aniocha/Oshimili’s bid for the Senate. It is this spirit of mutual respect and cooperation that has sustained Delta North’s political unity, and it should not be abandoned.

Aniocha/Oshimili’s quest for the 2027 Senate in the person of Senator Ned Nwoko is not just about politics, it’s about addressing years of marginalization and ensuring inclusive representation in Delta North. Their political relevance and contributions to the Anioma cause should not be dismissed lightly.

“The interest today is the public interest because the interest of the people is more important than any other thing. Some of them are not too happy but it is important the majority of the people are happy with what we are doing now.

“We are not doing media show, what we are doing is real and those who know me very well know that I will not compromise. So if you want to be my friend do a good job, if you don’t want to be my friend then don’t do a good job and I will kick you out.

“Some people say that this kind of governor who is doing like EFCC, is good for the people. The masses voted for me and they appreciate what we are doing so I will not allow a few people to decide for us, I will not take that from them.”

On requests for upward review of projects, Oborevwori said rates had gone up, adding that he usually visits such projects to see the extent of work done before carrying out any upward review.

“We can only review jobs awarded 2022 and early part of 2023 before I assumed office. This is because when we came in the dollar was around N750 now dollar is about N1600. Materials have gone up and we also feel for them but most especially we want them to do good job.

“You can see most of the contractors have returned to sites, we are not going to spare anybody, do the right thing.”

Governor Oborevwori who spoke further, appealed to residents of Asaba to keep their environments clean and directed the State Commissioner for Environment, Chairman Waste Management Board and the Chairman Taskforce on Environment to ensure total compliance.

While pundits have been swift to condemn Okolie, they have notably remained silent on the performances of representatives from other parties, such as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressive Congress (APC). This one-sided scrutiny raises questions about the underlying motives behind the criticism.
It appears that Okolie’s refusal to partake in the unhealthy practice of distributing largesse has made him a target for detractors.
An anonymous critic suggested that the issue is not about Okolie’s ability to attract developmental projects but rather his refusal to “settle” individuals who otherwise claim to have somehow hitherto supported him. Essentially, the critic argues that Okolie should distribute money or “palliatives” to certain individuals.
This expectation is not only detrimental but also a significant obstacle to Nigeria’s progress. It sustains a culture where politicians are viewed as providers of personal benefits rather than public servants committed to societal growth.
The roots of Nigeria’s challenges lie in the deeply ingrained practices of money+ politics and godfatherism.
The demand for politicians to share money or provide handouts perpetuates corruption, encouraging officeholders to prioritise amassing wealth and maintaining their power base over serving the public. Furthermore, it diminishes accountability, shifting focus away from their performance in office to their ability to distribute personal benefits.
As this situation unfolds, Hon. Ngozi Okolie likely feels the burden of these unrealistic expectations. While the pressure may seem overwhelming, it is vital for him to remain steadfast in his mandate to serve the people of Aniocha/Oshimili. Okolie’s primary responsibility is to deliver effective representation, not to act as a dispenser of monetary benefits.
His constituents stand to benefit far more from his efforts to attract meaningful projects, improve infrastructure, and enhance their overall quality of life:before the rxperation of his tenure.
To this end, Okolie is encouraged to stay focused on his goals, engage openly with his constituents, seek alliances with colleagues and stakeholders; and uphold transparency and accountability in all his dealings.
It is imperative that critics ease the unrelenting pressure and allow him the space to work effectively. Persistent destructive and unfair criticism only serves to hinder progress and demoralise leadership.
Okolie’s commitment to transparency and prioritising the needs of his constituency over personal interests is a hopeful sign for Nigeria’s political landscape. By focusing on the greater good, he sets an example that others can emulate. It is crucial for society to acknowledge and reward such leadership, which places collective interests above individual gain.
As a nation, it is time to recalibrate our expectations of politicians. We must prioritise their performance and commitment to public service over the distribution of handouts. By shifting our focus to policies and developmental achievements, we can foster a political culture that values transparency, accountability, constructive criticism and the well-being of all citizens. Only then can we achieve the progress and development we desire for Nigeria.

The Delta North Senatorial District has yet to feel the impact of the International Oil Companies (IOCs) and Local Oil Companies (LOCs) operating within its region, despite the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) since 2021. The 3% development fund allocated to host communities under the PIA has not translated into meaningful progress for the oil-producing communities in Delta North.

The enactment of the PIA was a landmark moment, aimed at addressing years of environmental degradation, neglect, and lack of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in host communities. For Delta North, this law was supposed to usher in a new era of rapid infrastructural development and improved living conditions. Unfortunately, this promise remains largely unfulfilled.

The PIA, signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari on August 16, 2021, created a legal framework for governance, regulation, and fiscal responsibility in the petroleum industry. It mandates that 3% of the annual operating expenditure of oil companies be remitted to the Consolidated Revenue Fund (CRF) for the development of host communities. According to the Executive Director of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Engr. Gbenga Komolafe, oil companies have consistently remitted these funds since 2021, amounting to hundreds of billions of naira.

Transparency and Accountability in Fund Management

The neglect and marginalization of Delta North’s oil-producing communities are glaring. Decades of environmental hazards, poor CSR implementation, and inadequate Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) have left these communities struggling with poor healthcare, substandard infrastructure, and environmental degradation. Despite these challenges, there has been no significant development to show for the 3% PIA remittance intended to improve their living standards.

The NUPRC, alongside other regulatory bodies like the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), must ensure that the funds accrued under the PIA are transparently managed and utilized for the intended purpose. As custodians of this framework, they are obligated to ensure that host communities benefit directly from these resources.

The cumulative 3% remittance from these companies amounts to an estimated 30% of their operational costs annually. Over four years, this represents approximately 120% of their combined operating expenditures remitted into the CRF designated account supervised by NUPRC, totaling hundreds of billions of naira. These funds are more than sufficient to address critical projects like the Okpai Independent Power Plant (IPP) and the Ogwashi-Uku Dam, as well as to improve healthcare, education, road networks, and electricity in the region.

The lack of visible development from these funds raises serious concerns about transparency and accountability. As your senator, I am committed to ensuring that the NUPRC and other regulatory bodies expedite the disbursement of these funds and that they are judiciously utilized for the growth and development of our host communities.

To build trust and accountability, I will engage with the relevant Senate Committees and invite the management of these oil companies to provide detailed reports on their contributions and how the funds are being allocated. Furthermore, I will work closely with the inaugurated board members of our host communities to guarantee that these resources are used to address the specific needs of the people.

Delta North cannot continue to suffer neglect while billions of naira intended for its development remain stockpiled in the CRF. Together, we will ensure that these funds are put to work for the benefit of our communities, paving the way for a brighter and more prosperous future for all.

It is regrettable that Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, rather than engaging in sober reflection and demonstrating humility after his recent incarceration, continues to indulge in delusions of grandeur and outdated political entitlement. His latest remarks, laced with misplaced bravado and a glaring sense of myopia, suggest he still clings to the archaic belief that Delta North’s political future can be manipulated and twisted at will.

It is imperative to state unequivocally that Senator Ned Nwoko, a man of substance, vision, and progressive ideals, remains focused on delivering the dividends of democracy to his constituents and uplifting Anioma people. Senator Nwaoboshi, on the other hand, appears to have learned little from his time away—a period that should have been dedicated to introspection and remorse for his past track record as a “contractor senator,” turning the dignified position of a legislator into a platform for merchant greed and personal gain.

The claim of being “Mr. Equity” is laughable when juxtaposed with his historical record of manipulating justice and bending the political will of the people to suit his self-serving interests. The Delta North electorate is no longer beholden to political machinations and empty rhetoric. Nigerians, particularly Anioma people, have awakened to the necessity of leadership rooted in accountability, integrity, and development, qualities Nwaoboshi sorely lacks.

His assertion that he is “politically, financially, and educationally superior” to Senator Ned Nwoko is nothing short of delusional. Leadership is not measured by inflated egos or narrow-minded posturing but by tangible achievements, genuine service, and a proven track record of public good. Senator Nwoko’s sterling human capacity development philanthropy, empowerment and global contributions to malaria eradication, his legislative milestones, and his unwavering commitment to equity and development stand in stark contrast to Nwaoboshi’s theatrics and penchant for controversy.

Rather than attempting to rewrite history or engage in political mudslinging, Nwaoboshi should dedicate his energy to rehabilitating his tarnished image and convincing Delta North that he has indeed paid his penance. Electioneering should be the farthest thing from his mind in this new era where accountability reigns supreme.

Senator Peter Nwaoboshi would do well to focus on fostering unity and progress rather than sowing seeds of discord. Let him refrain from dragging Senator Ned Nwoko’s name into his futile attempts at political resuscitation. The people of Delta North deserve leadership that is forward-thinking, not a return to the dark days of manipulation and mediocrity.

The days of backdoor politicking are over. Delta North has moved on, and it is high time Senator Nwaoboshi did the same.

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Tuesday, said he was out for bad contractors who execute shoddy jobs for the state.

He vowed severe sanctions for them and site engineers who okay shoddy jobs for payment.

Governor Oborevwori issued the warning shortly after inspecting the 6.5 kilometer Achalla-Ibusa Road being executed by the state government.

The Governor, who frowned at the poor quality drainage executed by the contractor handling the project, reiterated that his administration would not tolerate any shoddy job.

He disclosed that his decision to inspect the project stemmed from an unsatisfactory feedback he had received from individuals that he had previously sent to evaluate the project.

Governor Oborevwori noted that he will prioritize road inspection this year, adding that his goal remained to ensure that his administration constructs quality road projects worthy of commissioning.

“This year, we are starting with more of inspection. The work on Achalla-Ibusa Road is bad, very bad. I have told the Commissioner and the Director that we cannot accept the drainage.

“The poor drainage will not affect the stone basing and the asphalting of the road; so, the contractor can continue by taking advantage of the dry season.

“This will serve as a warning to other contractors. There is no contract work that l will not go and inspect. If you do a bad work, we will not pay you. Even if we paid you, the site engineer will be in trouble.

“This government will not tolerate a situation where site engineers connive with contractors to deliver sub-standard projects.

“If you want to please me or be my friend as a contractor, do a good job; if you don’t do a good job as a contractor, you can’t be my friend,” he said. He stressed that some of the contractors would be blacklisted for doing shoddy jobs

The Governor pointed out that his administration would not spend money on projects for which Deltans would not get value for the money spent.

“Starting this January, I have committed to personally inspect projects, not just in Asaba but across all 25 local government areas.

“Any contractor who fails to report to their site or delays the work will face contract revocation. We will re-assign such projects to those willing to deliver.

“Our terrain requires us to maximize the dry season for construction. Over the next four months, we aim to complete and commission significant number of projects.

“By the time we reach two years in office, we want to celebrate substantial progress across multiple sectors, including roads, health and education.

“Deltans have not seen projects yet; there is going to be a lot of projects coming. We are going to award more projects this year across all sectors,” the governor added.

Governor Oborevwori, who also inspected the recently completed 2-kilometer road leading to the 63 Brigade Barracks of the Nigerian Army in Aboh-Ogwashi, applauded the contractor for the speedy execution of the project contract for which, he said, was awarded three months ago.

“We awarded this project three months ago, and I am pleased to commend the contractor for doing an excellent job. This road will encourage further development, allowing the Army to proceed with building structures in the area,” he said.

Other projects inspected by the Governor included the gully erosion site along Okpanam-Ibusa bypass, the perimeter fence and road around Asaba International Airport as well as Kwekagbor Layout, opposite Summit Junction, Asaba.
