Brace up for National Recovery, Reps Minority Caucus Urges Nigerians on New Year

The Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives has congratulated Nigerians on the dawning of the New year, 2023, urging them to further unite, brace up and forge a formidable front in the determination to rescue Nigeria from oppressive forces.

In a statement Saturday December 31, 2022 by the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, the Caucus said, Nigerians as a people, should step into the New Year with thanksgiving to God for the miracle of surviving the suffocating economic hardship, escalated insecurity and myriads of suppressive experiences occasioned by the misrule of the incompetent, insensitive and very corrupt All Progressives Congress (APC).

“The New year presents a fresh opportunity for us as Nigerians to rekindle our sense of patriotism, love, care and commitment to one another as we redirect our productive energies, collective ingenuity, creativity and resourcefulness to reinvent our nation for the good of all.

“The year 2023 is therefore significant, being the year of the much-awaited general elections that will mark the end of eight years of asphyxiating regime of the APC, as Nigerians march to the polls to elect a new people-oriented leadership to commence the onerous task of rebuilding our nation.

“Our Caucus therefore urges Nigerians to set aside all parochial personal, group, sectional, ethnic and religious sentiments, focus on the larger national interest and firmly resist all selfish and anti-democratic forces that might attempt to distract or subvert their will in the elections.

“Against this backdrop, all democracy institutions and security agencies must deploy all necessary measures to guarantee a free, fair, transparent, peaceful and credible electoral process where Nigerians freely participate and in which all votes count at the end of the day.

“The Minority Caucus urges President Muhammadu Buhari to write his name in gold by ensuring that he leaves a lasting legacy of a leader that ensured free and fair election and hand over to whoever Nigerians genuinely elect in the forthcoming Presidential election irrespective of the party the individual belongs to.

“Furthermore, as the nation prepares for a new lease of life under a new Order, our Caucus demands in very strong terms that the APC administration should not continue to worsen the already perilous situation but use the turn of the year to end its unrestrained borrowing and reckless accumulation of debts with which it decimated our productive sectors and mortgaged the future of our nation.

“Nigerians earnestly desire a government that truly works in their interest and 2023 holds the promise,” the Caucus stated in the statement.

They greeted Nigerians on the occasion of the New year and wished the nation many fruitful years ahead under a purposeful and caring leadership.

Stampede As Anambra Filling Station Sells Petrol N180 Per Litre

-From SUNNY A. DAVID:

The Premium Motor Spirit, popularly known as petrol, is selling between N330 and N390 per litre in Onitsha, Nnewi, Awka and other parts of Anambra State.

The situation was like that at all the filling stations visited by our correspondent across the State, except at a filling station located at Tarzan, near Onitsha (name withheld) which was selling at N180 but with large queues of vehicles and customers scrambling for the product.

As a consequence, the cost of transportation and prices of commodities has sharply increased in the State.

This is just as travellers going to other parts of the South-East for the New Year celebration were made to pay as high as over 300 per cent in transportation fare.

Movements in and around Anambra were also affected as tricycle and shuttle buses increased their fares astronomically.

It was gathered that fares for intra-city shuttle and tricycle had increased by as much as 300 per cent as transporters now collect N300 for distances that cost N100, as commuters and commercial transport operators engage in hot arguments and quarrels.

For instance, a journey from Onitsha to Awka, which used to be N500, was increased to N1,500. Upper Iweka to the Main Market, Upper Iweka to Holy Trinity and others, which were formerly N100 went up to N300.

Our correspondent who went round major cities of Onitsha, Nnewi, Awka, Ekwulobia, on Saturday observed that motorists in the town expressed concern that the price of petrol had continued to rise without anybody coming to their rescue.

They accused marketers of arbitrarily hiking prices because of the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

A traveller, identified as Mama Chioma, who lives in Onitsha but travelling to Abakaliki in Ebonyi State, lamented that the increase in transport fare had put additional burden on the travellers and household items.

She called on the Federal Government to intervene in the petrol price issue and save the masses from unbearable hardship.

Another traveller and a trader in Nnewi, Mr. James Udo, who described the situation as very pathetic, blamed it on the greed and opportunistic nature of transport operators who see the Yuletide as a period to amass wealth.

In his response, a commercial driver with the Star Sunny Motors in Onitsha, Mr. Goddy Ikem, justified their actions, insisting that transport operators were now buying PMS at a very high price which has adversely affected their returns.

Ikem, in charge of Anambra, Ebonyi and Enugu States, said, “It is not our problem; the price we are charging is reflective of the high cost of buying petrol.

“This is even affecting us the more, but we have to remain in business to service our people, especially during this Yuletide period.

“The high amount we buy petrol now is even affecting our returns and our profits have dropped by about 50 per cent, commuters should understand our plight too and know that it is not our fault.”

Adaptation is Key Characteristic of China’s Policy against COVID-19 (by H.E. CUI Jianchun, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria)

On the New Year’s eve, Chinese President XI Jinping, at his 2023 New Year Address, extended greetings to all nationals as well as friends and people in the world, while claiming that, since COVID-19 struck, China has prevailed over unprecedented difficulties and challenges. China has entered a new phase of COVID response, where tough challenges remain. Everyone is holding on with great fortitude, and the light of hope is right in front of us.
After three year’s fighting against the pandemic, the whole world is much more convinced that, virus itself is the common enemy of all human beings. Till now, the coronavirus is still lingering over the world, with far-reaching social, economic and political consequences in different countries, and also with its sub-variants, such as Omicron, prevalent in many countries including China.
From the very beginning of its response against the pandemic, China has always taken responsible policies on a science-based and targeted approach, by putting people and their lives above all else, and by adapting measures dynamically and proactively. It has been proved and widely recognized that China’s COVID response policies over the past three years have realized the goal of achieving the best results at the least cost.
In the past three years, China has provided the greatest extent possible of protection to the people. China has made the best effort to protect the life and health of its 1.4bn people, and poured all resources into treating every patient, no matter its own nationals or foreigners living there. China has effectively responded to five global COVID waves, and avoided widespread infections with the original strain and the Delta variant, which are relatively more pathogenic than the current spreading variants. Globally, China has had the lowest rates of infection and mortality. Despite the pandemic, average life expectancy in China rose from 77.93 years in 2020 to 78.2 years in 2021.
In the past three years, China has witnessed the stability of its economy and also its supply chain to the world. One of the key focuses of China COVID policy is to minimize the impact of the pandemic on economic and social development. With joint efforts of the whole country, China’s economy has managed to consolidate its resilience and maintain sound fundamentals, making it a reliable driving force of global economic growth. The country’s GDP expanded at an average annual rate of 4.6 percent from the third quarter of 2019 to the third quarter of 2022, which is well above the world average, according to data released by the OECD. Besides, China has also led the world in terms of trade volume, goods production and energy production, and kept its inflation rate at a relatively low level. Chinese people’s basic livelihood has been guaranteed during the pandemic. In 2022, despite a global food crisis, China has secured a bumper harvest for the 19th year in a row.
In the past three years, China has witnessed the large-scale vaccination internally. China’s efficient response policies have bought precious time for researching and developing vaccines and medicine, and raising the vaccination rate of the whole population. As of last December, more than 3.46 bn COVID-19 vaccine doses had been administered on the Chinese mainland, with over 90 percent of the population fully vaccinated. However, due to most of the vaccination has been done a year ago, it is hard for a large part of the Chinese population to retain a high immunity level against various mutant strains. Recently, the second booster shot campaign has been pushing forward nationwide, with special attention on elderly people and people with serious underlying health conditions.
In the past three years, China has promoted the robust international solidarity. Since COVID-19 began, China has actively participated in international response. China shared the genome sequence of the virus at the earliest opportunity, making important contributions to the drug and vaccine research around the world. The competent authorities in China has kept regular communications with the WHO, carried out dialogues with partner countries to exchange technical experience, and shared information in a timely, open and transparent manner in accordance with the law, aiming at an early global victory over the pandemic. Meanwhile, to strengthen global defenses, China has provided anti-pandemic materials to 153 countries and 15 international organizations, sent medical expert groups to 34 countries, and offered over 2.2 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines to more than 120 countries and international organizations.
In the last quarter of 2022, China adapted and refined its response policies, in line with a changed landscape of viral contagion. This shift is science-based, timely and necessary. It fully took into account of the much less pathogenic and deadly status of the globally spreading Omicron variant, as well as of the progress that China’s treatment, testing and vaccination capacity steadily on the rise, and would concentrate its response from stemming infection to caring for health and preventing severe cases.
According to this adaptation, people infected with coronavirus will no longer be quarantined and their close contacts will no longer be traced. Moreover, China is one step closer to fully opening to the outside, as domestic and foreign airlines will operate scheduled passenger flights, with limits on flights no longer applicable including closed management, nucleic acid testing, and quarantine measures.
Countries adjusting the COVID policy would invariably go through a period of adaptation. China is no exception. However, China’s current COVID situation on the whole remains predictable and under control, as many cities have gone through the peak. This adaptation by China is also important from a strategic and long-term perspective, for effectively coordinating COVID response with economic and social development. American, British, German and other foreign chambers of commerce in China commend this downgrade adaptation, noting this will clear the way for resumption of people-to-people exchange and business travel, and enhance foreign investors’ confidence in the Chinese market.
Comparing with the natural virus, what we should be much more vigilant on is the political virus. As many international health experts indicate that, the main variant now spreading in China is the same one prevalent in other countries, it is senseless to impose extra restrictions on travelers from China. Political manipulation of COVID response measures by few countries would only bring chaos to world’s solidarity. In this regard, we highly commend the Federal Government of Nigeria for its science-based and proportionate COVID response measures, which has featured from the very beginning of its response.
The light of hope on final victory over pandemic is right in front of us. Just as appealed by President Xi at his New Year Address, “let’s make an extra effort to pull through, as perseverance and solidarity mean victory”.

Obosi Killing: Monarch Said “We Know Killers Of Our Town Union Leader”

-From SUNNY A. DAVID:

The traditional ruler of Obosi Community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Igwe Chidubem Iweka III on Thursday stated that himself, his cabinet members and other law abiding citizens of Obosi Ancient Kingdom know the identities of notorious cultists in the Community.

Speaking to newsmen at his Palace, Traditional Ruler, flanked by some of his cabinet members, including the Odu Nkataego of Obosi, Chief Godwin Osakwe said it was the same notorious cultists that assassinated the President-General of Obosi town union, Chief Ikechukwu Okolo in cold blood on Monday, January 2, this year, which created severe tension in the area throughout for two consecutive days.

He noted that the activities of the cultists have become too inexplicable that the law abiding citizens of Obosi no longer sleep with their two eyes closed, to the extent that they kill and maim people almost on daily basis.

The Monarch however noted that they have submitted the names of the bandits and the rampaging cultists to law enforcement agencies for arrest, questioning and possibly halting of their nefarious activities in the area.

Igwe Iweka appealed to Governor Chukwuma Soludo and heads of security agencies in the State, including the Police, DSS, Army, Navy to come to their rescue before these deadly cultists wipe out the entire citizenry, particularly now that the Royal Cabinet in conjunction with the town union have submitted the names of the bandits to the enforcement agencies.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, told newsmen via SMS that the assassins were yet to be arrested, adding however that investigations were still ongoing.

OLUSEGUN OBASANJO: TO LOVE OR TO LOATHE?

-By Austen Akhagbeme:

Everybody seems to know General Olusegun Obasanjo, the former Nigerian military Head of state and civilian president, but not everyone loves him. And this is a fact of life and the scripture.

OBJ, as he’s fondly called it, means different things to different people. To some, he represents the vestiges of an unnecessary fratricidal war (with his 3rd Division command and operation tail-wind fame) hoisted on us by two belligerent “juveniles” and petulantly perverted egoistic military leaders that were on both sides of the divide during the Nigerian civil war.

To another “generation”, he reminds them of a loyal and gallant subordinate who help to cushion the effect of the painful loss of a unique patriot like General Murtala Mohammed by ensuring a smooth completion of his vision by handing over to a democratically elected government which was a novelty and the first of its kind in Africa at the time.

Another “generation” thinks about him as the prepared messiah who escaped General Abacha’s gulag and was railroaded by providence back to the corridors of power amidst the confusion that enveloped those who murdered sleep in Abiola’s travails when Nigeria needed equilibrium in the centre of political power the most amidst competing influences.

Yet, some in the most recent “generation” sees him as an unkind meddlesome interloper who claimed to be all-knowing and possesses the uncanny ability to sway public opinion to his advantage. Some dismissed him as a bitter Godfather and perfectionist who is always unsatisfied with the efforts of others.

These are the reasons for the tirades and the multiplicity of vituperation that accompanied the public support the retired General expressed towards the candidacy of Mr Peter Obi in next month’s presidential election in Nigeria.

For someone that has gone through the motions of military and civilian leadership in Nigeria, it will be foolhardy for anyone to dismiss his opinion based on partisan consideration or sheer personal hatred for the ageing war horse alone.

Whether you love him or loathe him, Gen Obasanjo remains part of the conscience of the nation and an unembellished truth to power in Nigeria. Obasanjo may be loathable, he’s equally lovable. Let us give thought to the candidate he preferred and the advice that he gives. It is called wisdom.

Aregbesola Alleges Coordinated Effort to Frustrate Reconciliatory Moves with Tinubu

Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has alleged of the existence of sinister and coordinated effort to frustrate the reconciliatory moves between him and the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as being championed by notable stakeholders within and outside the ruling party.

Relationship between Aregbesola and Tinubu hit the rock during the last gubernatorial election in Osun state as both stalwarts disagreed on supporting the APC’s governorship candidate and sitting governor, Gboyega Oyetola’s re-election.

A signed letter on Wednesday by the Media Adviser to the Minister of Interior (Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola), Sola Fasure read that: “The attention of The Media Office of the Minister of Interior has been drawn to social media news ascribing false statements to Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, as concerns an attack on the person of the presidential candidate of our Party, The All Progressives Congress , Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This is FAKE news and simply not True.”

Fasure, alleged in the statement that: “A pattern has clearly emerged of sinister and coordinated effort to frustrate the reconciliatory moves being championed by notable stakeholders within and beyond our party to rally all necessary factors for the success of our Party at the February 2023 Presidential Election.”

He said: “Just last week, jittery politicians who are authors of this malicious manuscript, paid a handful of rent-a-crowd comedians to react to a non-existent ‘attack’ and regurgitate the storyline again, with the intention to frustrate a series of reconciliation steps for their selfish interest.”

“We urge well-meaning Nigerians to be wary of the evil machinations of this cult of fifth columnists, whose sole business is to cause disaffection, manufacture distractions and sow discord within the APC and the progressive fold,” Fasure added.

He said: “For the umpteenth time, the general public is advised to note that Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola is focused on delivering key reforms in the Ministry of Interior and its agencies as championed by President Muhammadu Buhari, and also ensure that the APC emerges victorious at the 2023 General Elections.”

My life or His Publicity? When Zulum made a call

By Isa Gusau:

Our boss, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, my family and closest friends wouldn’t like what I am about to publicly reveal. I deeply apologise.

Last week, I had a surgery at Max Multi Speciality Hospital in New Delhi, India. The surgery, which doctors categorised as a ‘high risk’ was around my chest wall and lungs. It lasted some hours. It was very successful. Alhamdulillah!

Some readers, especially close friends, may now have mixed feelings: happy that the surgery went well, but disappointed that I kept them in the dark. I am sorry.

If you (reading this) also feel that way, you certainly have the right to be angry, that is, if you translate my decision to impliedly measure your importance to me.

Well, I even kept the surgery away from my children. I made sure they did not know what I was going through. I also kept it away from my brothers and sisters.

Sometimes, the best way to protect your loved ones and friends is by making them think everything is okay. You may torture and potentially harm some if they know precisely what you might be passing through.

Unless it happens beyond your control, what is really the point of deliberately making your loved ones and friends suffer from the pains of extreme imagination and mental bereavement, whereas putting them in that state would not quite change your condition?

As a journalist 12 years ago, I had a surgery for appendix and a complication from the mistake of surgeon in Abuja, kept me hospitalised for two weeks. From my hospital bed, I saw how my children – 12 years younger then, were often traumatised. I saw how my sisters in particular, brothers and close friends were sleeplessly worried.

So, this time, I decided to free them from those pains.

I must say however, that keeping people in the dark has its own downside. You potentially lose deliberate offer of prayers and well wishes. You also have to deal with people engaging you since they do not know.

From my hospital bed, I attended to office work and private issues, including financial requests.

Someone even sent me a strong message, almost calling me a wicked man for not sending him money the day he made his request. Funny enough, his request came the night before my surgery. At that time, I was undergoing a final round of mandatory tests: kidney, liver and respiratory function, Hepatitis B and C, and HIV I and 2, which are conducted on all patients undergoing surgery, for the safety of surgeons who endlessly make contact with blood in theatre.

I had about 100 tests, but negative for all dangerous diseases. Again, Alhamdulillah.

But I must admit that anticipating results from cancer tests (and this happened a number of times), was traumatising.

From the onset, I was sent for a whole body PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scan. This is a nuclear diagnostic procedure that evaluates the functioning of all body organs and tissues from head to toe. It is one of the highest diagnostic machine for cancer, heart and lung diseases, gastrointestinal, endocrine, neurological disorders, and other serious conditions.

All the tests reconfirmed what I already knew before arriving in India – that I had a chronic ulcer and some fluid between my chest wall near my lungs.

The Indian doctors investigated me intensively, to rule out any dangerous cause of the fluid. This was why I had to undergo numerous investigations for all killer diseases.

From both sides of my chest, the fluid was extracted and cultured to detect any link to all kinds of dangerous diseases. All negative.

At the end, the Indian doctors concluded I needed to have a thoracic surgery which involved penetrating my chest wall to evaluate my lungs, drain the fluid and extract some tissue for biopsy. Again, the biopsy reconfirmed no link with any dangerous disease. Alhamdulillah! The fluid was from a blockage.

But how did I even find myself in India?

One evening, in the second week of November, 2022, I went to Governor Zulum with a communication plan we had produced at the Press Unit of the Government House.

The plan was to comprehensively showcase most of what the administration achieved since 2019. We planned a syndicated multimedia campaign on traditional, online and social media, with dates and sectors to be focused on.

The plan did not require funding. We only needed the Governor’s blessing.

Governor Zulum looked at it and said, ‘this is an excellent plan. Please see me tomorrow, insha’Allah to discuss it.’

The following day when I came, Zulum said something I did not expect.

‘Gusau’, he began. ‘I am seriously worried about how you are losing weight. What is happening?,’ he asked.

I said, ‘I have ulcer but I was also having some chest pain. I saw a medical doctor in Abuja and after a chest CT scan, they found some fluid around my chest. The doctor said from my test results, he did not think it was anything serious. He gave me some ‘water pill’ to drain the fluid.’

Zulum said: ‘look, I really like your plan for our media campaign but honestly, your health is far more important to me. I want you to immediately go to India and do an intensive check-up. I will issue a diplomatic letter to speed up your visa issuance. Leave this media thing till you return.’

Zulum’s judgement call was thoughtfully wise because the ‘water pill’ did not work.

Zulum provided all the support I needed. I departed on December 13, 2022 and he kept monitoring my journey.

The Governor came to India for some engagements on December 25, 2022, and on arrival, he immediately invited me.

Later same day, I was admitted ahead of my surgery, scheduled for Tuesday, December 26.

Early on surgery day, Zulum called just as he did later at night to know how it went. This was despite assigning someone to monitor me and update him.

The next day, Zulum was by my bedside. We spent an hour together. I saw from him love, compassion, brotherhood and fatherliness.

I am eternally grateful to an extraordinary boss and to everyone who supported me.

Although I lost weight, I am recovering and from the look of things, I might soon be strong enough to challenge Omos, that big and ruthless wrestler, to show him I am stronger.

Until that ‘fight’, I wish you the best of health, faith and prosperity.

Namaste!

Babafemi said an initial search of the suspect’s two checked in bags almost made him a free man as there was nothing incriminating found there until the NDLEA officers took a second look at the duty-free shopping nylon bags containing packs of ‘candies’ he was holding in his hands.

He noted that a thorough examination of the duty-free shopping bags revealed the packs of candies inside were actually used to conceal 105 parcels of cocaine weighing 2.8 kilogrammes and 43 grams of cannabis.

The spokesman revealed that preliminary test conducted on a plastic bottle of body lotion also found in possession of the suspect, also tested positive to cocaine with a total weight of 472 grammes.

PDP’S DILEMMA AND THE IMPLACABLE FIVE

0

-By Austen Akhagbeme:

With barely 52 days to the much-awaited 2023 general elections, the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, are still in a prolonged dilemma and at loggerhead with the five estranged governors of the party over the resignation of Dr Iyorchia Ayu.

The most recent is a daring step by the five mutinous governors to name the presidential candidate of their choice outside of Atiku Abubakar, who is the party’s presidential flag bearer. This angered the PDP apparatchiks as they threatened to sanction the five “erring” governors; this has become a very complicated decision to take given the circumstances and the forces at play at the moment.

Can a party that had lost personalities like the presidential candidates of NNDP, Engr Rabiu Kwankwaso and that of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi in one year survive the aftermath of public sanctions against 5 serving governors a few months to elections? Obi and Kwankwaso left with their massive goodwill and support from the PDP only this year and that is a minus for the party anyhow we look at it. The very reason for the party to tread softly. Ignoring the lion is better for the tired hunter than shooting at it without hitting the target.

But in all fairness to the Party, it has become very obvious that despite her several overtures and reconciliation missions to these aggrieved governors, the governors remain obdurate in their resolve. Rather, they do much damage to whatever remains of the collective pride of the PDP as a party daily through their caustic and unguarded utterances. But as we all know, every one of them is in a war of survival, nay political relevance. And in a war, foul is fair and vice-versa.

The overwhelming reception that Governor Wike gave to the Labour Party and the promise of ” logistic support” speaks volumes of how far the hearts of these five governors have gone from the PDP and all that it represents.

They have suddenly become obstinate in their course and obdurate in their minds as it is becoming obvious, too, that the party cannot meet their demand. Nevertheless, the party and her drivers should be circumspect and not upturn the apple cart completely. That will spell doom for the party.

2023: Okowa to Nigerians, join us to end your sufferings

0

Vice-Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Governor of Delta, Sen. (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa has urged Nigerians to join hands with the party to rescue and rebuild the country from the sufferings created by the inept APC-led Federal Government.

Okowa who made the call on Wednesday at the party’s campaign at Ughelli North and Isoko South Local Government Areas of the state, said that only the PDP had the right experience to rebuild the nation’s economy and stop the pervasive insecurity across the country.

He said that the party’s Presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar had the requisite experience and political will to turn things around for the country as he did as Vice-President to President Olusegun Obasanjo when the PDP was first elected in 1999.

Okowa who led the campaign to the Local Government of the Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege said that some members of the opposition in the state were not pleased with the empowerment of youths and women in the state with relevant skills.

He urged the people to reject arrogant politicians who brought shame and disgrace to the state and vote for the party candidates who he described as level headed and man of the people.

According to him, the youths and women of Delta are our great strength, and once i see them i know the matter is finished.

“I thank all of you who are here present and my greatest thanks goes to the youths and women of Delta state.

“I am happy with the crowd of people I see here today in Ughelli North. We have been seeing such crowds before but this one is exceptional.

“I thank my Deputy Governor for his support. Like my Deputy has said, we will follow Sheriff to the church to do thanksgiving of victory come 2023.

“We do not want a governorship candidate who will bring disgrace to Delta and Deltans and we do not want people who are angry that we are spending monies to empower our youths.

“We do not want a governor that will be too proud to relate with the people and you know that our candidate Sheriff Oborevwori is a humble man who has immense respect for the people.

“When Oborevwori becomes Governor he will unite Deltans  because we don’t want a governor that will look down on other people,” he said.

Okowa accused the APC of causing disunity among Nigerians, insecurity, hunger, poverty and economic hardship in the country.

He called on the people to support the PDP to change the ugly situation caused by the maladministration of the APC.

“The PDP will work with the people to settle all the problems caused by the APC and change the change to return Nigerians to greater glory.

“We need to bring PDP back to the center and change the change that has brought untold hardship on the people and because of our performance in Delta state, PDP gave us the ticket of the Vice President. Therefore, we need all your support for victory come 2023,” he added.

He called on Deltans to mobilise fully for the Presidential Campaign holding in Asaba on January 24.

Governorship candidate of the party, Chief Sheriff Oborevwori said that Deltans were already preparing ahead for the victory thanksgiving on May 29, 2023.

He assured that by the grace of God he will win the election and bring his MORE Agenda to bear on the economic fortunes of the state.

State Chairman of the party, Chief Kingsley Esiso said Ughelli North people had shown commitment to join the mission to rescue and rebuild Nigeria.

He said that the people by their actions have shown that there was no other political party in Ughelli North, adding that Deltans and Ughelli North in particular were tired of the APC led Federal Government.

“I want to thank the leaders and followers of PDP in Ughelli North. What we are seeing here today is a pointer that there is no other party in Ughelli North.

“It shows that the people of Delta and Ughelli North are tired of the APC-led Federal Government. They have taken a bag of rice that was sold for N8,000 naira during the PDP reign to N52,000 as at today,” he said.

Deputy Governor of the state, Mr Kingsley Otuaro; Director-General of the State Campaign Council, Chief Funkekeme Solomon; Former Governorship aspirant, Chief Fred Majemite, former Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Stella Omu and Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon. Festus Ovie-Agas who spoke at both rallies assured of the massive support of the people for all candidates of the party.

At Ughelli, a former Governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress, APC in the state, Chief Osiobe Okotie and over 500 members of the party, defected to the PDP.
Osiobe Okotie who addressed the mammoth crowd, said he has returned to the PDP to join others to build the party in  Delta, saying; “like the prodigal son, I have returned to my original home, the PDP. I started politics in PDP so am back to my original home.

KACRAN Commends FG for Organizing Regional Herders-Farmers Confab

0

Kulen Allah Cattle Rearers Association of Nigeria (KACRAN) has commended the federal government for organizing regional Herders-Farmers conference.

The association in a statement on Tuesday by it’s National President, Hon Khalil Bello said “KACRAN highly appreciates the Hon Minister of Agriculture for organizing the recently concluded regional Herders-Farmers conference.”

The statement further read: “KACRAN as one of the most peace loving Herders Association in the country, which always appreciate any positive moves that will end the incessant conflicts between Farmers and Herders, wish to highly appreciate and extremely commend the Hon Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Muhammad Mahmud Abubakar; the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Ernest A Umakhihe; and the Director Animal Husbandry Services, Dr Winnie Lai-Solarin; the entire well experienced and highly committed staff of the Ministry for successfully organizing and hosting a Regional Summit on Human and Climate Security challenges and Farmer-Herder conflict resolution in Abuja, the Federal Capital in December this year.

“The Summit was well attended by pastoralists and farmers associations in Nigeria and other neighboring countries such as Niger Republic, Chad, Cameroon and Benin.”

Bello, in the statement, added that: “Truly the initiation, organization and successful hosting of the aforementioned summit by the Hon. minister is a clear testimony of his result oriented vision, determination and purposeful leadership, which he has brought to bear on the ministry, since he assumed leadership of this all important ministry. The Hon. minister and all his well experienced and committed staff, have shown capacity and determination to immediately end all the challenges facing our agricultural sector.

“In addition, the most striking thing about this historic summit under reference, being the first of its kind in over fifty years of the history of the Ministry is that, the honourable minister in his wisdom and foresight agreed, that the livestock and fisheries sectors, which have been totally marginalized and neglected over the years will receive due attention henceforth.”

He said: “In view of this, (KACRAN) feels that making that well thought and highly articulated statement by somebody of high repute like the Hon Minister of Agriculture in the presence of esteemed Nigerians and invited delegates from the neighbouring countries is worth mentioning and deserve sincere commendation not only by KACRAN but by all Nigerians who sincerely want justice and equity for the development of our fatherland.

“In this regard, we of KACRAN deem it necessary to once more, thank the minister for the new stand of the ministry, and state that, we the members of KACRAN are happy that we are now on the same righteous page with members of the Senate, judging from the recent statement of the Senate President, Dr Ahmed Lawan, when the Hon minister led a delegation of Veterinary Doctors to him on a courtesy call in his office. The Senate President was quoted as saying that ‘the livestock sector has been totally neglected in past, and that though he does not have any Fulani blood in his vein, he would ensure that justice and fairness are equitably gotten by all in the country, and that he is ready to lead the fight on behalf for the nation’s pastoralists’ rights and liberty.’

Bello said: “At this juncture let us once again say, capital kudos to our Senate President Dr Ahmed Lawan, Hon. Minister and the entire staff of the ministry under reference who put head together to make sure that justice and fairness is fully exercise in the allocation and implementation of the Ministry’s policies and programmes.

“And Here we abundantly wish to state it in unmistakable terms that the entire members of KACRAN are so much happy and excited with the above anticipated positive developments in the livestock sector. For this reason we want to state that since the registration of KACRAN to date in our regular statements in the prints, electronics and social media, we are always crying and complaining bitterly that the nation’s pastoralists and fishermen are neglected and left behind, because much of the money meant for developing agricultural sector is painfully tilted towards developing arable farming to the detriment of the other two very important animal husbandry sectors.

“In the same vein, we want to call on Federal Government under the able leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari and our National Assemblies under the good leadership of Senate President Dr Ahmed Lawan and Rt Hon Speaker Mr Bajabiamilla to as a matter of utmost importance and clemency to create a Special Ministry of Animal Husbandry Services that will be solidly responsible for the aggressive development of livestock and fisheries sectors. This is so because of the immense contribution of these sectors in providing healthy nourishment to Nigerians and the development of the nation in general.”

ASUU strike did  not affect Delta universities – Okowa

Vice Presidential Candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Governor of Delta, Sen. Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, on Monday, said the eight-month strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) did not apply to the four universities owned by the state.

He said the four universities did not join in the industrial dispute because his administration had provided what the striking universities were demanding from their employers.

Okowa spoke at Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Day celebration in Asaba.

He said the state government’s attention to the universities was the same way it attended to all sectors in the state for development.

He disclosed that his administration had constructed no fewer than 2,000 kilometres of roads and close to that number of kilometres for drainages across the state.

The governor said that the roads were constructed in the riverside communities  hitherto dubbed  hard-to-reach areas.

He said that the government had provided huge number of infrastructure in the state, adding,  however, that he was particularly keen at celebrating the projects with fanfare associated with inaugaration.

According to him, money that would have been used to inaugurate completed projects could be channelled into other projects for the overall benefit of the people.

He disclosed that there were a lot that have been done in the state in terms of projects delivery, adding that he was not, in most cases, moved to inaugurate projects except if they were very huge projects.

“Obviously, there are a lot that have been done in the state, but many times, I am not moved to inaugurate projects except if they are very huge projects.

“The reason is that you spend monies when you want to inaugurate projects. Those monies spent on inauguration of projects can be put back to do other things for the state. So, occasionally, we commission projects.

“But in terms of quality of roads in this country, I am not sure that any state has done the number of roads we have done in this state. We have done over 2,000 kilometres of roads.

“Even in our riverine areas, we have constructed roads. When we were starting the secretariat, people criticised us but today, I feel civil servants are happy for it,” he stated.

On the theme of the celebration “His Birth, Our Hope,” Okowa said the birth of Christ is the hope of all Christians, adding “for Christ to truly be our hope we must learn to walk in him.

“If we want to reap the benefit we must learn to work with Christ that is working with everything we have been taught.

“As a state, we are grateful for the prayers of our Christian fathers and for their great impact on the government.

“We owe all our successes and achievements to God. When I look at where we came from and where we are today, we must give thanks to the Lord our God.

“We are proud that Delta now run four universities and they are functional and when other universities went on strike, all our universities were working.”

In his remarks, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Delta State Chapter, Senior Apostle Sylvanus Okorete commended Governor Okowa for the construction of the Christian Centre in Asaba.

He lauded the cordial relationship between CAN and the state government and urged religious leaders in the state to give their full support to the aspiration of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to become the first Deltan to be elected Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Okorote noted that the state secretariat of CAN being built and furnished by the state government has over 2,500 seating capacity, adding that the magnificent project would promote inter-denominational worship of God.

He implored Deltans of voting age to ensure that they collect their Permanent Voter’s Card (PVCs) and vote in the forthcoming general elections in the country, even as he urged Christians to worship God with contentment.

The CAN Day celebrations was attended by Speaker of the State House of Assembly and PDP Governorship Candidate, Chief Sheriff Oborevwori; member representing Ika Federal Constituency, Hon. Victor Nwokolo, and Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Christopher Ochor among others.

2023: Peter Obi in Trouble As Strong Igbo Leader Disassociates Self From Ex-Gov’s Presidential Bid

0

-From SUNNY A.  DAVID:

The Presidential ambition of the candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi may have hit the rock as a prominent Igbo leader in Anambra, Prince Arthur Eze, reportedly disassociated himself from the ex-governor’s ambition.

Our correspondent reports that Prince Eze was said to have dropped a bombshell on Saturday, December 24, on the occasion of the 2022 Ofala festival of HRH Igwe (Dr.) Robert Eze, the traditional ruler of Ukpo in Dunukofia local government area of Anambra State.

According to our correspondent, Prince Eze was quoted as making an anti-Obi comment in the presence of Governor Charles Soludo, traditional rulers, women groups and people from different walks of life.

Prince Eze, who is a billionaire oil mogul was reported to have said that he was not part of Peter Obi’s presidential aspiration.

He said: “I warned Peter Obi to withdraw from this race but he would not listen. I told him plainly that I am not part of his plans. I told him to drop his ambition, and wait for next time.

“When he told me about his ambition, I asked him the States he thinks he can win in the West and in the North – he told me; but I was not convinced. I told him he cannot win; so that he would not waste his time and money.”

Pointing at Governor Soludo, Arthur Eze, whose nephew, Prince Emeka Eze, is the flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Aniocha, Njikoka and Dunukofia Federal constituency, continued:

“This is the person we are tipping to take over as Nigerian President of Igbo extraction in the time to come. We have a Presidential candidate that we are supporting now. After his tenure, he will hand over to Soludo as President.”

However, a women’s group, Umuada Igbonine Home and Abroad, whose members were present at the occasion, expressed shock at Prince Eze’s comment, describing it as one made under an influence.

Igbo women frown at Arthur Eze over comment on Mr. Obi The Group, which spoke to newsmen through one of its Leaders, Dr. (Mrs) Ndidiamaka Ojukwu, said that she was surprised that Prince Eze would make a such remark concerning Obi.

She said: “Prince Arthur Eze that I used to know does not speak carelessly. Though, one is not surprised because, his senor brother son is in the race, under another party platform.

“If he would support another party, his nephew will be affected negatively. I believe, and believe strongly that Anambra, Igbo and well-meaning Nigerians, irrespective of the State of origin or religion, will support Peter Obi to the fullest.”

Also, a traditional ruler from one of the communities in Anambra Central Senatorial Zone, who would prefer not to be named, described Eze’s anti-Obi comment as a very bad omen for the image of the business mogul, and the image of the Igbo people.

He said: “You see, this is why people say that Igbo people are not united or that Igbo people hate themselves. When prominent Nigerians from various tribes and religions are supporting Mr. Peter Obi and Labour Party, why should this man talk this way in public about Obi?

“Anyway, he is entitled to his personal opinion. His opinion does not reflect the sensibilities of Dunukofia people it is not the opinion of Anambra or Igbo people.”

-From Sunny A. David:

There has been serious tension in Umuchu town in Aguata Local Government area of Anambra State for the past two days following the kidnapping of the Managing Director of People’s Bookshop, Ogbuehi Pius Egwuekwe, by unknown gunmen in front of his palatial home.

Our correspondent ģreports that Ogbuehi Egwuekwe was on Friday whisked away by the bandits in front of his house and taken to an unknown place probably in order to demand for ransom.

He was said to have driven down from Zaria in the Northern part of the country with his driver to his village in Ibughubu Umuchu to celebrate this year’s Christmas with his family.

However, everything turned to a sad experience after his driver drove for several hours from the North and on getting home to enter his gate, some armed men accosted the driver at gun point. When the driver stopped, they were said to have opened the vehicle and forcefully took away Egwuekwe to an unknown place.

The matter was reported to the Police, who reportedly moved into action but their actions have not yielded any result yet as the victim has not been rescued and no suspect has been arrested as at the time of filing this report.

The victim, Ogbuehi Egwuekwe, was said to have returned late in the evening due to the long distance journey from Zaria before the sad incident.

The alleged kidnapping has thrown the whole community into panic and serious tension as many feared that people in the community were no longer safe considering how the plot was perfected with ease without drawing the attention of members of the vigilante group put in place.

Some members of the community suspected that it was an insider who may have leaked information of the victim’s return with his driver to the village.

Ogbuehi Pius Egwuekwe is a successful businessman, based in Zaria, Kaduna .

He has also touched the lives of many people in the community by attending to their material and health needs. No wonder since the incident happened, there has been palpable tension in the community with no traces of their whereabouts.

A statement on Sunday by the spokesman of the anti-narcotics agency, Femi Babafemi said at least 12 suspects including two dock workers and a wine shop businessman have so far been arrested in connection with the two seizures as well as the recovery of 152 kilogrammes of skunk from two dealers in Kano; 100,000 pills of tramadol in Imo state and 520 kilogrammes of cannabis hidden in soft drinks crates loaded in a truck coming to Abuja.

He disclosed that at the SAHCO import shed of the Lagos airport, the search of a consolidated cargo from South Africa led to the discovery of smuggled bottled cannabis juice with a gross weight of 16.5 kilogrammes last Wednesday, noting that .investigations by anti-narcotics officers subsequently led to the arrest of four freight agents: Soremekun Olalekan, Olufisayo Dayo; Moruf Olusegun and Imole Moses, whose statements eventually led to the arrest of the consignee, a wine shop business owner, Emebede Chuka, last Thursday.

Babafemi said also an attempt to export quantities of cannabis and ecstasy pills known as MDMA concealed in beverage drink, Bournvita, in containers to Dubai, UAE, through the NAHCO export shed last Friday was frustrated, with a vulcaniser given the assignment for a fee of N4,000, Iyanda Ogunleye has been arrested.

Anioma group endorses Senate’s confirmation of Onochie as NDDC chairman

0

The Association of Anioma Professionals (AAP) has commended the Senate for confirming the nomination of Ms Lauretta Onochie by President Muhammadu Buhari as chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

The AAP is a platform of professionals in various fields of endeavour of Delta North senatorial district extraction and has the socio-economic development of its people as its cardinal objective.

In a statement jointly signed by its president general, Mr. Peter Nkenchor and a member of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Emmanuel Emecheta, the group faulted the stance of some other groups that had opposed her nomination.

“The position of those groups was driven by selfish desires disguised as championing the interests of their ethnic groups. They are the same set of people that crippled the NDDC since its establishment.

“We align with President Buhari’s plan to reposition the Commission and in Ms. Lauretta Onochie, he has picked a personality that will jettison the business-as-usual attitude needed to make NDDC responsible and responsive to the yearnings of the long suffering people of Niger Delta”, AAP’s statement read.

They said that the agency has been held hostage by persons and groups who put their narrow interests over and above those of the people of Niger Delta, noting that at each cycle of appointment of a new leadership, they use blackmail and threat of violence to get themselves and their lackeys appointed with the sole aim of preventing NDDC from being responsive to the genuine interests of the people of the region.

“We commend President Buhari for shunning the blackmail and appointing a team led by Ms Lauretta Onochie that will bring the desired change in the running of the NDDC. We trust in the ability of Ms Onochie to steer the Commission to a new trajectory that will make it accountable to the people of the Niger Delta”, the Anioma group stated.

On December 20, 2022, the Senate confirmed Onochie’s nomination as chairman of the Commission alongside those of the managing director, Hon. Samuel Ogbuku from Bayelsa State as well as members of its board. Until her nomination, Onochie was the Special Assistant to President Buhari on Social Media.

Kanu Gravely Sick, Must Not Die In Custody, Rights Group Warns FG

0

-From SUNNY A.  DAVID:

A Rights Group, International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety), has called on the Federal government to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, saying that it could be a way of pacifying the Igbo people.

The organization said Kanu was gravely sick, and that heaven will be let loose should anything happen to him.

Chairman of Board of Trustees of Intersociety, Mr. Emeka Umeagbalasi gave the warning yesterday in Enugu during the 2022 global media conference and media presentation of a 27- page special Investigative report on Nigeria’s INEC, exposing illegalities and sundry scientific rigging plots ahead of the February 2023 presidential election.

Recall that Kanu’s lawyer, Mike Ozekhome and his team of over 18 lawyers had signed a notice of application for an Order of Judicial Review (Order 34) in the Federal High Court in the Abuja Judicial Division, Abuja, informing it that the detained leader of the IPOB is terminally ill and needs to undergo an operation.

The order with suit no: FHC/ABJ/CS/2341/2022, dated December 20, 2022, sought to compel the State Security Service to grant Kanu ‘unhindered access’ to his medical doctors to enable them to conduct an ‘independent examination of his present deteriorating health condition’ as earlier ordered by the Federal High Court on October 21, 2021.

In the suite, Chief Ozekhome also prayed the court to grant leave to Kanu to compel the DSS to avail him with “all his medical records from June 29, 2021, to date, including but not limited to the admission records, medical and clinical records, nursing notes, observation charts and documentation during treatment or stay in the hospital, laboratory test results, pharmaceutical records, radiological scan, images and reports, blood transfusion records and physiotherapy and rehabilitative treatment records”, among others.

Reacting to the development, Comrade Umeagbalasi said that the DSS, under whose custody Kanu had been, must give him adequate medical attention and make sure that nothing happens to him.

He explained that the law grants custodial liberties, including shelter and health to whoever is being tried, wondering why Kanu’s case is different.

“This includes the unconditional release of Kanu and all those who are currently in detention in connection with pro Biafra agitation anywhere in the country.

“Federal government must seek political solution to Pro-Biafra issues. They must release Kanu. He must not die in prison. The consequences of Kanu dying in prison will be far reaching.

“When people like us advise government, we expect them to hear. By next year, there will be change of government and whoever becomes president must look for original solution to this problem.

“This government is already going out, and I advise that it looks for a way of making amends for the many wrongs it has done against the people of this area, including releasing Kanu.

“I believe that DSS is capable of taking care of Kanu, they can give him the best medical condition that he deserves, including flying him abroad for surgery. Nothing must happen to him, he warned.

-By Albert OGRAKA:

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), Bashorun Askia Ogieh (JP), has encouraged Nigerians to embrace love, forgive one another, eschew anger, bitterness, hate, strife and conflict in all situations.

The Udu of Isoko Nation enjoined all to “look beyond the difficulties of the present times and look to the future with hope as we all unite in love to work out the salvation of our nation.”

The Managing Director, DESOPADEC emphasized that “The example laid down by Christ is easy to follow when we internalise the Golden Rule which is simply to love God and to love our neighbour as ourselves.”

The Christmas message reads:

“I wish all Deltans, and Nigerians in general, a very merry Christmas.

“While we all celebrate the anniversary of the birth of Jesus Christ, our Saviour, we should call to mind that He personifies love and is symbolised as a Lamb which depicts meekness and humility.

“Those attributes speak to all believers to be ready to yield ground for the good of others, to share with our brothers and sisters, to forgive one another, to eschew anger, bitterness, hate, strife and conflict in all situations.

“The example laid down by Christ is easy to follow when we internalise the Golden Rule which is simply to love God and to love our neighbour as ourselves.

“This should apply in the family, community, workplace, open society and even in politics.

St James makes it easier for us to achieve when he pointed out that no worries should turn us away from the love of Christ.

“Let us therefore look beyond the difficulties of the present times and look to the future with hope as we all unite in love to work out the salvation of our nation.

“Merry Christmas.”

0

The Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu has urged Nigerians to use the occasion of the 2022 Christmas to rekindle their trust in God and reinforce their love for one another in the renewed hope of a brighter future for the nation under a purposeful, caring and humane leadership in the coming year.

Elumelu in a statement on Saturday December 24, 2022, said Christmas, the celebration of the birth of the Saviour, Jesus Christ is a rejuvenating assurance of God’s unfailing presence, love and redemption for mankind and particularly our nation from the current suppressive administration that has brought so much pain and hardship to Nigerians.

“It is indeed heartrending that in the last seven and half years, of the current administration, Nigerians have been so deprived that they cannot afford their basic needs and made to observe major festivities in fear, misery and utter desolation due to economic hardship and escalated insecurity.

“Despite the challenge, we must not succumb to despondency but strengthen the bond of unity, celebrate and share with one another in love, believing that this will be the last Christmas under an uncaring government.

“Moreover, Christmas presents yet another opportunity for those behind the acts of violence and disunity in our country to turn a new leaf and embrace a life of peace, love and harmonious living especially as our nation prepares for crucial general elections in the coming year.

“We must therefore use the celebration of the coming of Jesus (God is Salvation) to affirm our trust in God’s saving grace to rescue our nation from the wood and return her on the path of unity, peace, joy and happiness, which is the essence of the Yuletide.

“The Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives felicitates with Nigerians and wishes them a merry Christmas and a happy New Year ahead,” the Minority Leader stated in the statement.
