2023 Elections: Artisans, CAN, Civil Servants, Others Endorse Elumelu for Re-election…Pledge Support for Atiku/Okowa, Oborevwori/Onyeme, Others

0

Ahead of Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections, more groups in Delta State have endorsed the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon Ndudi Elumelu for re-election.

Groups including highly influential Artisan Association of Nigeria, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) among others in Delta State unanimously adopted Elumelu for re-election at the National Assembly election scheduled for Saturday, February 25, 2023.

The Minority Leader who represents Aniocha/Oshimi Federal Constituency of Delta State was on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 in Asaba, Delta State Capital, endorsed by the groups along with the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, his running mate Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, Delta State PDP Governorship Candidate, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, his Deputy, Chief Monday Onyeme and all other candidates of the Party in the State.

It would be recalled that Elumelu had continued to receive the endorsement of groups and communities in his Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency ahead of the elections.

Speaking at the event, the Minority Leader thanked the groups for their support and urged Nigerians to vote massively for the PDP at the elections, noting that the Party’s antecedents were clear indication that it was the Party of choice.

Elumelu who is PDP House of Representatives Candidate for Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency noted that the endorsement was significant coming from non-partisan Nigerians.

According to Elumelu, “This particular endorsement of our Presidential Candidate, His Excellency Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, our own dear humble, visionary and performing Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as well as other candidates of our Party, including my humble self, is significant coming from non-partisan Nigerians who are driven by sheer patriotism in recognition of the leadership qualities; experience, integrity, capacity and of course, the achievements of the PDP candidates.

“Your unanimous support at this time is, therefore, heartwarming and points to the inevitable sweeping victory for our Party at all levels of the 2023 general elections in Delta State and Nigeria at large.

“I have also been made aware that your decision in endorsing the PDP Candidates reflects the direction of millions of your comrades in other states of the federation, particularly for the Atiku/Okowa ticket.

“The endorsement, however, does not come to me as a surprise, given the ability of patriotic Nigerians as yourselves to sieve and make the right decision in the overall interest of our nation at this critical time.

“The PDP Presidential Candidate, His Excellency Atiku Abubakar, a very humble, affectionate, honest and selfless Pan Nigeria leader has over the years distinguished himself as a statesman with the ready blueprint, capacity, required experience, broadmindedness and readiness to lead, unify and return our nation on the path of peace, national cohesion and economic prosperity.

“In the same vein, our Vice-Presidential Candidate, our own Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa has also distinguished himself as a seasoned administrator with unprecedented achievements in massive infrastructural, human capital development and citizen empowerment in all spheres of life.

“This endorsement by the Association of Artisans, I believe, is in further appreciation of Governor Okowa’s efforts in retooling skill acquisition system in Delta state which led to the unprecedented burst of thousands of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) benefiting millions of citizens across our State and beyond.

“In a similar vein, our Senatorial and House of Representatives candidates, our governorship candidate, Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, his running mate, Hon. Monday Onyeme, as well as PDP “Delta State House of Assembly Candidates, have distinguished themselves as patriots who are committed to selfless service for the wellbeing of the people at our various levels of leadership engagements.

“It is, therefore, our firm belief that with the duo of Atiku Abubakar and Sen. Dr. Okowa, in the presidency and other PDP candidates in their various positions, Nigerians will experience a new lease of life of peace and economic prosperity.”

The lawmaker insisted that PDP had shown the capacity to rescue Nigeria from its current ugly state, stressing that the Party had in the past led the nation from abyss to glory until the APC came, reversed the milestones achieved by the PDP and put the nation in the current abysmal state.

He lamented that the APC brought untold hardship to the country and urged Nigerians to use the elections to redeem the nation by voting in Atiku Abubakar as the next President of Nigeria.

Others who spoke including the Chairman of the State Civil Service Commission and a renowned Political Leader in the State, Chief Nkem Okwuofu, enjoined them to take the message to every nook and cranny of the State adding that the PDP was ready to redirect the nation’s economy.

While commending the Vice-presidential candidate of the Party and the Governor of Delta State, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa for his commitment to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) which according to him has been of immense benefit to the Association, the Chairman of the Artisans Association, Ifeanyi Abinum, appreciated Hon. Elumelu for his excellent representation in the National Assembly.

He assured that members of the association across the 25 Local Government Areas of the State are ready to vote for all PDP candidates in the elections.

Elumelu, ahead of the weekend’s election also engaged and secured the overwhelming endorsements of members of CAN, as well as workers in MDAs, NUT and NULGE in the four Local Government Areas of the Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency.

He also met with non-indigenes in the Federal Constituency as well as Landlord Associations where he had meaningful interactions and also intervened on their urgent and immediate needs.

EU-ACT, British Council Call for Govt, CSOs Collabo to Create Enabling Laws, Increase Compliance

0

The European Union and the British Council have urged Civil Society organisations in Nigeria to collaborate with the government in mapping out an enabling environment for the sector.

The National Programme Manager, Agents for Citizen-Driven Transformation (ACT) Programme, Damilare Babalola said the European Union and the British Council through the ACT programme aim to facilitate the relationship between government, CSOs, and regulatory agencies to promote mutual understanding, enabling environment and sustainable development programmes across the country

The European Union-funded ACT Programme was inaugurated in Nigeria on September 24, 2019, to contribute to inclusive, effective, responsible, and gender-responsive development in the country.

Babalola said this on Thursday in Abuja during a knowledge share fair with the theme: “ Nigerian CSOs Translating Knowledge to Capacity and Impact.”

While lamenting the gap in the nongovernmental organizations, NGOs, he said: “There are misconceptions that civil organisations are not regulated but the fact is that they are well regulated but there are issues around compliance but ACT seeks to promote compliance “

He also explained that: “We also notice weak capacity in some CSOs. Civil society is part of the mechanism used to drive sustainable development globally. They are involved in policy advocacy and policy engagement at different levels hence we need them to have a strengthened capacity. They need to put the internal governance in place, HR policies, account policy to aid their functionalities.”

He said the government needs to understand the space before setting laws and regulations.

“Regulatory agencies should come out and sensitize civil society organizations on the need for regulations. The FIRS should come out and enlighten CSOs more about the taxes and the consequences of not complying. PENCOM should enlighten actors in CSOs the government shouldn’t make laws on assumption,” he noted.

In his remarks, Executive Director, of Nigeria Network of NGOs (NNNGO), Oyebisi Oluseyi said CSOs are interested in regulations that enable smooth operations but kick against those that shrink civic space and stand against them performing social responsibilities to the communities they are meant to reach

He said: “We don’t want laws that will not allow us to do our work effectively. There’s a myth that nonprofit organizations are not regulated, but experience from what we have done showed that there are 54 existing laws that guide our operations.

We don’t want a law that will not allow us to help the common man. If government policy is not working and we spark up, we don’t want a situation where the law will be used to arrest us. We also want to carry out projects in communities without government shrinking resources meant for community development projects.”

Senior Director for Advocacy, Centre for Civilians in Conflict, The Hague, Netherlands Udo Ilo,, said CSOs must focus on sustainable programs, in line with the government policies, and will impact the Nigerian community.

He emphasized the need for CSOs to strengthen internal governance and control for accountability, public confidence, and trust. He also urged Civil societies to engage with the government for more understanding.

While commending the European Union and the British Council for the ACT Program, Mina Ogbanga, chief operations officer, of Rivers Network of NGOs said Regulatory agencies should make policies easy for compliance and not make processes unnecessarily cumbersome especially when it comes to registration.

PETER GREGORY OBI: JOKER IN THE PACK

0

-By Austen Akhagbeme:

It is amazingly interesting to know that every Nigerian, home and abroad, knows the problems of Nigeria. This is because the pain of bad governance and the effects of a malfunctioning society is naturally felt by all no matter how we may try to play the ostrich.

It is in light of the above observation that the need for sober reflection and unbiased introspective soul-searching by all becomes necessary, especially in moments such as we are now if we must move forward as a nation.

Nigeria as a sovereign state has gone around this mountain of despair and hopelessness for so long that any attempt at maintaining the status quo in terms of her leadership recruitment frost with the known and the familiar nuances, will spell doom for the nation: God forbid.

The present political situation has thrown up a uniquely different scenario. For the first time in a long while, three leading candidates are involved in the slugfest. While two are descendants of the anachronistic order that has kept us bound and bowed as a nation, the third is a rising dawn after the darkest night; sanity after long years of madness and confusion.

Peter Gregory Obi represents the totality of hope for a people wallowing in endless despair and swimming in hopelessness untoward. He represents the unbiased and altruistic determination of every Nigerian to witness the great dawn of hope for a nation eaten up by her greedy political elites in our lifetime.

This is the time to close our dimming eyes and itching ears to tribal and religious lullabies to embrace the true music of hope and change that has the people in mind always. Let us throw away the old rags that remind us of endless slavery, poverty and squalor to embrace the newness of hope and a new way of doing things such as Peter Obi represents.

As we go to the polls a few days from now, let us remember the past and its players and compare them with the future we desire for ourselves and our children yet unborn. This is no time for emotive decisions based on frivolous and temporary satisfaction.

It is the time to queue up behind a man like Peter Obi whose fame and acceptance have gone beyond ethnic, regional and religious boundaries to trigger hope alive again in the heart of despondent citizens and their ailing nation. Do not vote “wisely”, vote for Peter Obi. He is the Joker in the pack.

DIDA Boss Insists Delta Conducive For Local, Int’l Investors *Says Delta Is Now 1-Stop Shop For Investment

0

Chairman of Delta State Investments Development Agency (DIDA), Mr. Paul Nmah, has urged both local and international investors to avail themselves of the enabling business environment created for them by Delta state government to invest in the state.

Nmah made the call while declaring open a one-day engagement meeting on ease of doing business with the organized private sector and other stakeholders, held on Thursday February 17, 2023 at the Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba.

Nmah said that all the factors inhibiting businesses have been identified and were being addressed to enhance the ease of doing business in the state.

He affirmed that DIDA under the Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa led administration had attracted many investments into the state.

He mentioned that the Agro-Industrial Park, Ogwashi-Uku and the Kwale Industrial Hub which were being marketed by DIDA for investors, would have Independent Power Plant (IPP) and other ancillary facilities that would ensure ease of doing business.

“We know all the issues and we are working hard to resolve them. So, investors should be patient with us,” he said.

He said that DIDA as an investment facilitation Agency has been at the forefront of driving the investment thrust of the state from over reliance on Oil and Gas to other sectors of the economy.

“Some of the investments have been completed while others are nearing completion or undergoing the process of implementations.

” As the Chairman of DIDA,  I have made it a priority to always interface with the organised private sector towards ensuring that Delta remains the preferred investors’ haven.

“I wish to encourage and invite both local and foreign investors to avail themselves of the conducive business environment we have created for them to invest in the state,” Nmah said.

Meanwhile, DIDA Director-General, , Olorogun Lucky Oghene-Omoru, disclosed that the engagement with private sectors has become  necessary now that the country was facing economic and social challenges which had adversely impacted the performance of most businesses.

According to Oghene-Omoru, the ease of doing business of the  World Bank programme has 10 parameters designed to remove bottlenecks that endanger the performance of businesses within the state and the country.

“The parameters are briefly;  starting a business, dealing with construction permit, registering property, enforcing contract, paying taxes, resolving insolvency, obtaining credit, getting electricity, trading across borders and protecting minority investors.

“In DIDA, we have the One-Stop-Shop Department which is charged with the responsibility of evaluating the ease of doing business in the state, guiding and advising investors with respect to the investment and programmes of the state government.

“Delta government has inaugurated the State Ease of Doing Business Council,  which together with DIDA and other relevant state Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs) are working together to achieve the World Bank reforms on ease of doing business.”

Oghene-Omoru, urged the stakeholders to bare their minds on issues that affect their businesses for consideration and the attention of the governor.

He, however, said that the recent ranking that placed Delta as the 35 position out of 37 in the country on the ease of doing business was not a true reflection of the reality on ground.

He said that the evaluators should use indices from Asaba, the state capital as done in other states instead of using Warri, adding that businesses in Asaba has maintained a steady and rapid growth over the years.

The President, Delta State Association of Chambers of  Commerce Industry Mines and Agriculture (DACCIMA), Chief Anthony Idigbe, represented by Mrs Onyinye Molokwu, urged the state to reflect on the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council publications (PEBEC).

According to him, the PEBEC report which published the KPMG Nigeria rankings of the States in the country, placed Delta as 35 out of 37 States and FCT on the ease of doing business.

Also, the Chairman, National Association of Small Scale Industrialists (NASSI), Mr Prince will Ojei and his counterpart with Manufacturer’s Association of Nigeria (MAN), Edo/Delta, Dr Udensi Okwara stressed the need for power and energy and grants to support small businesses in the state.

While representatives of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and  Control (NAFDAC), Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Corporate Affairs Commission  (CAC) and Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) urges collaboration with DIDA to deepen support to SMEs in the state.

APC: THE CRACK AND THE UNENDING CONVERSATION

0

By Austen Akhagbeme:

The diminutive governor of Kaduna state, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, seems to be leading the pack, being the most vociferous of them all. He is firing from all cylinders to assert that the ongoing cash policy of the Buhari-led administration has a sinister motive other than what we were told.

And he’s quite emotive about it, the reason he went on air to counter the position of the nation’s President on the matter shortly after his nationwide broadcast. This is quite daring and audacious on the part of El-Rufai who until recently, was seen as a member of the Aso Rock cabal and the President’s kitchen cabinet.

The issue at stake has two main tributaries to it: those that seem to oppose the position of the apex court of the land that called for the redesigned Naira notes to be used alongside the old notes pending when the motion on notice is decided (on whose side the President belongs) and those that insist that the position of the Supreme Court is a subsisting order that must be respected.

This knotty issue has brought to the fore the deep crack within the APC top echelon and it is threatening to further aggravate and erode the relative peace within the party since the completion of her controversial primaries last year.

There seems to be a novelty of error and bad precedence being set in all of these. That sitting state executives can brazenly issue statements that are at variance with that of the President and commander-in-chief on a policy issue before the Supreme Court, such as was the case with Kaduna and Jigawa state, is one.

That a political party can be so uncompromisingly divided into interest camps, factions and fractions within itself and go across to another opposition political party in search of solidarity, all in the name of frustrating an uncomfortable policy, is another.

There’s the legal angle to it; whether or not the President, himself, has not dishonoured the supreme court by his decision to stop the use of the N500 and N1000 notes as legal tender when the supreme court has stated otherwise. There is a legal argument, too, that questions the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court on this matter since the case is not directly between the federal government and the state but that of an institution–the Central Bank.

Whether we like it or not, the ruling party is overheating the system and this is not good for an electoral year. This is why so many people doubt the ability and willingness of the government to deliver an election in a free and fair manner come next week.

In all of these, there must be a convergence of opinions, decisions and intentions on the part of all parties involved in this crisis in the best interest of all Nigerians.

The safety of our nascent democracy and the continued existence in peace as a nation must be considered above party or personal interests. Let APC put their house in order and stop playing politics with people’s well-being. This cash policy has truly brought untold hardship to almost everyone. And most importantly, the world is expecting us to conduct our elections next week. To every Nigerian, this is sacrosanct.

OPINION: ISOKO SENATORIAL OPPORTUNITY AND THE POSITION OF ISOKO TRADITIONAL RULERS COUNCIL

0

“… Says 5/5 Crusade Is Epileptic – Prof. Akpotu.”

-By Jubilant Igelige, JP

The President General of Isoko Development Union (IDU), Prof. Chris Akpotu has disclosed that Isoko ethnic nationality cannot afford to miss the Delta South Senatorial seat in the forthcoming 2023 general elections.

He made the disclosure while interracting with the Edo chapter of IDU members in Benin City few days ago, adding that, as a nationality, we must be weary of “Political Crumbs” that is being deliberately shared to us with a view to impeding Isoko economic growth.

Akpotu, who by virtue of his position remains the number one citizen of Isoko nation said, the plausible resolution on the Senatorial seat by Isoko people in conference of December 2021, was the reason Isoko Traditional Rulers Council exercised “sheer willpower,” throwing impeccable support behind Hon. Thomas Joel Onowoakpo in the contest, noting that the project is Isoko, not individual. He gave assurance that despite having few dissenting voices, yet believing they will join the campaign vanguard before the election.

According to the erudite Professor of Management Sciences, the selection and/or choice of Joel Onowoakpo to run the Senatorial race, in All Progressives Congress, after wickedly depriving the PDP aspirant, Sir. Ayodele Oghogho Othihiwa, is for a divine purpose, as the incoming political Messiah to salvage Isoko nation from the perceived demonic relegation we have being in the last 20years, saying that, the position of the kings on the Senatorial matter is non negotiable, irreversible and ever ready to mobilize support for Joel Onowoakpo because deceit and oppression is a sin before God.

“Recall that December 26, 2022, Isoko Traditional Rulers specifically offered Joel Onowoakpo prayers at Isoko Unity Hall, IDU Secretariat, Oleh. The prayers, dignity and authority demonstrated by the kings connotes acceptance and victory of Onowoakpo, as well as panacea for doubting Thomases, having dissenting actions, he said.

“Party is supreme slogan is no longer fashionable in the current political syllabus. The era wherein ‘olodos’ are being given patronage, as against equity is unethical. The party’s antiquated slogan of 5/5 cannot and will not sway eligible voters, on the ground that the electorates are well informed now. In a clime, where peoples’ choice and decision is grossly maligned, 5/5 become alien in election matters. In the system where people promote and prefer mediocrity to excellence, 5/5 becomes an abominable crime. An environment where injustice and lack of fairplay is openly displayed with impunity, 5/5 is mandatorily swept under the carpet. In a transition where some ethnic nationality benefit hugely without equitable recourse and distribution of the common wealth, voting 5/5 becomes a soured sermon to preach. Asking people to vote 5/5 in an electioneering season of imbalance is like running a football commentary without a football match.

“Prof. Akpotu emphasised that, though IDU is apolitical, we cannot remain docile and indecisive in a political context where decisions and interest are trampled upon, noting that, as a people, we must right the wrong with our thumb in order to create an enduring political sanctity. Therefore, party supremacy is no longer tenable under the current political dispensation, he added.

“Basically, as drivers of the Isoko exalted Senatorial vision, we have been so empowered by the Isoko people to make a roll call and effectively preach the good news to check the sincerity of support, stressing that, as conscientious leaders, he must continue to sensitize the people on the danger of any mischievous actions. In the present NIGERIA political condition, there is going to be a fundamental voting protest, as universally perceived even in the ruling party, thereby giving room to accusations and counter accusations. Going forward, in the face of the current political quagmire, IDU will not be a “political chameleon,” PG added.

Finally, it is nice to say that, the political chess game is ongoing and Isoko for Senate Is possible. He called on eligible voters in Delta South to partner with Isoko nation to address the injustice.
Isoko Traditional Rulers Council praying for Joel Onowoakpo, is directly requesting all Isoko sons/daughters to reconsider the Isoko Senatorial position and leave the “political shell” for the sake of the growth of Isoko Nation, because prayers do not replace work. At the moment, we have very competent, experienced and knowledgeable Delta South Senatorial candidate, in the person of Hon. Thomas Joel Onowoakpo, the man with the unbeatable credentials and speech prowess. Being apolitical does not take our sense of good reasoning and direction. It is chiefly an opportunity that does not recognize 5/5 sermon, Akpotu concluded.

BUHARI, NIGERIANS AND THE CONSEQUENCES OF POLITICAL VENDETTA

0

-By Austen Akhagbeme:

That the Naira redesign policy of the Buhari regime has become a nightmare since October last year when it was first announced is no longer in doubt.

This laudable monetary policy, ordinarily speaking, could have gone down in history as one of President Buhari’s masterstrokes in bringing back an ailing and complex economy like ours.

But instead of a monetary policy tool, the taciturn General has chosen, against all odds, to use the cash policy as a means to deal with a perceived political enemy and their amorphous clan.

And now, the intended consequences are taking their toll on the unintended targets, causing sorrow, tears and blood among the hapless masses.

This is quite unnecessary, unwarranted and undesirable, especially after eight years of rudderlessness in the fight against corruption by a regime that rode on the back of the promise to fight corruption to power.

The short-sightedness in the planning and execution of the cash policy following the hardships that it unleashed on the unsuspecting voting public a few months before a crucial general election, has rendered the exercise counter-productive.

If the intention of the Buhari regime was as noble as they would want us to believe, the outcome as of today is showing that a citizen that is denied access to his money and thus becomes angry and hungry is easily influenced by cash-wielding corrupt politicians seeking desperately for votes on election Day, than otherwise.

And because the new Naira notes have been hijacked by these same people (through their cronies at the commercial Banks) who the policy was aimed to checkmate, one wonders if the ill-fated cash policy with the attendant asphyxiating backlash was the right tool to deliver a credible election to Nigerians instead of the instrumentality of the law.

Nigeria has never lacked good policies since its independence; the bane has always been the intention, thrust and implementation. The present agony and pain of this policy far outweigh its mouthed intentions no matter how noble and altruistic they are. Let Buhari and his controversial apex banker reconsider.

E.K. Clark: How Not To Be An Elder Statesman

0

-By Fred Edoreh:

As a matter of culture we respect elders, but when they sometimes misapply the honour to manipulate society to achieve self interest it becomes somewhat unbecoming.

I have read the open letter of our revered Chief E.K. Clark to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and the very respectful reaction of the Delta State Government, but who does not understand that the elder statesman’s letter was clearly a political propaganda composed with untruths, half truths, inconsistencies and misinterpretation of facts to create disaffection across the state against our own Governor who is now opportune to be vying for the Vice President of the Federation?

It was not his first letter in the current political transition. Just before the primaries, he wrote one with veiled rejection and subtle threats against the rotation of the Governorship position in Delta State on the basis of Senatorial Districts.

What saddened me in that letter was the excitement with which he stated that he handed the documents to then President Olusegun Obasanjo to frame up Chief Onanefe Ibori.

He said he assembled the documents from some of the aspirants who lost out in the PDP Gubernatorial primary to succeed Ibori in the 2007 election.

One of them was the then Secretary to the State Government who was among those that rejected the principle of rotation of power across the districts of the state. He is contesting today to be the Governor of this same state. Another story.

E.K Clark revealed further that, not pleased that Ibori was discharged by the Court of Appeal, when Goodluck Jonathan became President, he pushed that Ibori must be punished.
That led to his chase from Abuja to Oghara to Dubai and his final travail in the UK.

Sadly, his motive was neither altruistic nor to fight corruption. He said himself that his grouse was that Ibori outsmarted him and a few elders of Delta South to produce Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan as the flag bearer of the PDP while they were still searching for a candidate.

It is always either they have their way or they destroy. Just the way some elders looked on at the destruction of Diepreye Alamiesegha, apparently because they did not like his appellation as Governor General of Ijaw Nation, rightly earned for his commitment to Restructuring, Resource Control and the political cum economic emancipation of the Niger Delta.

Clark has come again with another letter, cursing, swearing and lying against Okowa with so much fallacies and inconsistencies.

First, his grouse was that Jonathan was purportedly betrayed in 2015. He knows those that may have betrayed Jonathan. Okowa was certainly not one of them. Secondly, he knows that it was a betrayal of the nation for Jonathan to have sought to continue in the Presidency by 2015 because the action disbalanced and damaged the seeming consensus on rotation of the Presidency between the North and the South.

Fact is, after Obasanjo’s eight years, it became the turn of the North. When President Umaru Yar’Adua died after two years in office, the North was of the view that, it being their turn, they should be allowed to provide someone else to live the mandate. It was argued that that would be in violation of the constitutional provision for the the Vice President to take over from an ailing or demised President. The North agreed and, by the Doctrine of Necessity, they supported Jonathan to complete the remaining two years of Yar’Adua and the Northern first term.

Having served it out, the fair thing would have been to step aside for the North to produce the President for the second term in order to fulfill and complete their eight years in respect for the consensus, but Jonathan disregarded to exercise that fairness and insisted on continuing.

With uncommon understanding, the Northern caucus of the PDP conceded to him to continue, but with a caveat that he would do that one term of four years which he visibly agreed to.

To their chagrin, after serving the four years, Jonathan insisted on serving another four years. Seizing the mechanism of the party, he put himself up again, not minding that with Obasanjo’s eight years, his two years of completing Yar’Adua’s tenure and the four years of his own Presidency, the South had had 14 years while the North had had just two, and his insistence on continuing again from 2015 to 2019 would have meant the South having 18 years while the North was still at two years.

It does not seem right to me that our elder statesmen did not see that wrong but rather supported Jonathan in the obvious travesty.

It was for this reason that the North caucus of the PDP exited to the APC and rallied round Buhari.

Having so disregarded and destroyed the flow, I find it ironical and dishonourable that these same people are the ones talking about equity today.

Even Governor Nyesom Wike, when Rotimi Amaechi intended that, being an Ikwerre man, his successor should come from other nationalities of Rivers State, he refused and went on to take the Governorship, he being an Ikwerre man.

Talking about equity in the rotation of the Presidency, even as the arithmetic stands now, the South has had 14 years while the North has had 10. We may need to bring out the scale and see where to make the balance.

Talking about the declaration by Southern Governors, we seem to forgot that we marched the line in 2011 and 2015 by disregarding the North.

Our action in not restraining ourselves thus constrained both the APC and the PDP to throw open their Presidential primaries for winners to emerge through open democratic politicking from which Atiku Abubakar emerged as Presidential candidate of the PDP.

Those who come to equity must do so with clean mind. It has been said that, even in the PDP, throwing the primary open was most precipitated by the refusal of Gov Wike to agree on micro zoning to the South East, knowing that in the South, the South West had had a turn with Obasanjo and the South South had also had with Jonathan.

It was for this excessive disregard for others that Governor Dave Umahi left the PDP for him. This is why I pity the likes of Governors Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State who have submitted to Wike to be led by the nose.

By the way, when Wike was shortlisted alongside Okowa and Udom Emmanual for Atiku to choose a running mate from, he did not complain. Had Atiku chosen him, we would not have heard of G-5 and all that shenanigans of a bad loser.

Back to E.K. Clark, I will not bother to react to his spurious accusations against Okowa. It is the stuck in trade of propagandists and elders who erroneously feel like oracles.

We saw how Obasanjo packed all manners of accusations against Jonathan, including that he trained snipers where Abacha trained his and listed 1000 political leaders to be assassinated. Turned out all lies.

The issue of loan is a matter of public records, not subject to suggestive conjectures, except for mischievous political objectives.

The state has repeatedly clarified that it is not taking any loan nor fresh loan; that it had intended to take N150b bridging finance, the repayment of which was to be anchored on the expected refund on 13% derivation to be paid by the Federal Government in quarterly installments over five years; that it later scaled the amount down to N100b; that even so, it was not able to secure the N100b facility in that first attempt; that it was only able to secure N30b at about October 2022; that it had to reapply to the House of Assembly to revalidate the approval with other banks which have agreed to provide the facility with an addition of N20b to be invested in Liquid Gas portfolio just as the state has 15% equity investment in the BEDC; and that so far only about N19b has been received from the FG on the 13% refund.

These are matter of records that can be obtained from the banks, the CBN or national records agencies.

However, Clark obviously confirmed the position of the state in his letter when he stated that the initial request for N100b did not pull through, allegedly because Okowa wanted the money to be domiciled in Premium Trust Bank as against the lead banks.

So, having known that that initial request did not sail through for whatever reasons, what was the sense in suggesting that the revalidation was a fresh loan when he has confirmed it was not? Mischief? Mere propaganda?

Clark has had his time in government, from 1966 when he served in the Midwest and 1975 when he was made Federal Commissioner of Finance. We would thank him for whatever development he was able or unable to attract to the Niger Delta.

The struggle for the emancipation of the region has claimed lives and careers – from Isaac Boro to Ken Saro Wiwa, Alamiesegha and Ibori.

It was for this reason we supported Jonathan for whatever worth of development he may have brought to the region, even if it is only the university he sited at his hometown, Otuoke, just as late Gov Ambrose Alli sited the Bendel State University in his hometown, Ekpoma.

Interestingly, Clark has no issues with those but he does have issues with a university in Owa Alero and the upgrade of the School of Agriculture in Asaba.

As has been said, our daddy has made his political choice and is his right. Just that he should not think he can continue to fool the children to feather his nest.

Some of us know very well that neither Bola Tinubu nor his running mate, Ibrahim Shettima, has any feelings for the Niger Delta or oil producing areas whom they see as “sons of drunken fishermen,” an allusion to our environment and occupation. Remember?

Even Clark himself once pointed out that Obasanjo has so much hatred and resentment for the Niger Delta. For them, the oil and gas deposit belongs not to the people whose environment is continuously degraded to feed the nation.

I wish that after the coups of 1966 Chief Clark had not led the opposition to a Confederation system of government which we had and by which regions would harvest and apply their resources and only pay tax to the central government.

Nigeria and the Niger Delta would have been much more competitively developed, but to secure his personal privileges in government, he betrayed our interest and voted for unitary government at the conference for confederation called by General Gowon.

Since then, it has been a long road to Timbuktu but, in the present circumstance, we know that of the lot in the Presidential ballot, Atiku is a better friend of the Niger Delta.

Rather than being completely out of power on the backdrop of Obi/Datti and Tinubu/Shettima (needless talking about Muslim/Muslim ticket, “balubabluu” and all those drolls), the region is better served with Okowa as Vice President in the Atiku/Okowa PDP Rescue Mission.

But, more than that, how can anybody even be talking about the continuation of the APC in the governance of Nigeria at this time? We must not allow our elders to manipulate us into national suicide just because they feel not well personally aggrandised.

The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr Ahmed Audi has expressed the readiness of the Corps to protect members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), INEC officials and election materials to be deployed for the 2023 general election.

He gave this assurance when he played host to the Director General (DG) of the NYSC, Brig. Gen. Yushau Ahmed and some key management staff of the scheme on a courtesy call to the Headquarters of the Corps in Abuja.

Unveiling the purpose of his visit, the DG explained that he was at the Corps National Headquarters to appreciate the NSCDC for its service to the scheme most especially on the adequate deployment of personnel to NYSC Camps.

He disclosed that he intends to strengthen and deepen the relationship between NYSC and NSCDC ahead of the forthcoming elections because the Corps is a critical partner.

He requested the Corps to intensify surveillance that would ensure maximum protection and guarantee the security of Corps members, NYSC camps and places of primary assignments like they do for other critical national assets and infrastructures of government.

Audi expressed delight and optimism about the outcome of the scientific synergy existing between the security agencies at the forefront of the 2023 election security management.

He hinted that strategies have been put in place in the interest of national security to address perceived security challenges before, during and after the elections and assured that Corps members will be adequately protected during the exercise.

He advised Nigerians to participate fully in the forthcoming elections, stating that adequate measures have been put in place by the government to guarantee a peaceful atmosphere across the country.

The CG called for more public support to security agencies charged with the responsibilities of delivering safe, secured and credible elections, urging them to take steps to guarantee personal security using the cliche “when you see something, say something”.

NDLEA Arrests Church General Overseer, Theology Student over Dubai-bound meth, skunk
…Intercepts 1,430kgs Cannabis in LNG truck

0

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have arrested the Founder and General Overseer of Seraphic and Sabbath Assembly, Lagos, High Priest Nnodu Azuka; a student of Emmanuel College of Theology, Samanta, Ibadan, Udezuka Udoka and their freight agent, Oyoyo Mary Obasi over attempt to export methamphetamine and skunk consignments concealed in kegs of palm oil through the NAHCO export shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos to Dubai, United Arab Emirate.

According to a statement on Sunday by the spokesman of the anti-narcotics agency, Femi Babafemi, High Priest Nnodu was arrested last Saturday at his Seraphic and Sabbath Assembly church located at No 1, Sabbath Close, Ijesha area of Lagos following the arrest of two suspects: Oyoyo Obasi and the theology student, Udezuka Udoka last Thursday at the Lagos airport in connection with the seizure of 283 parcels of skunk weighing 14.9 kilogrammes and 204 grammes of methamphetamine concealed in four 25-litre kegs of palm oil for export to Dubai.

Udoka, had in her statement indicted the General Overseer of her new-found church, Nnodu and his son, Chisom Obi, who is now at large as the persons that gave her the consignments for export, alleging that she was compelled to take an oath of secrecy as well as engaged in a sacrifice of chicken in the church while High Priest Nnodu prayed for her for the success of the transaction.

Udoka claimed her church’s GO and son used threats to compel her to take the job after they knew she had known their secrets, adding that High Priest Nnodu was always referring to the illicit drugs as Ice and Bible, (Street names for Methamphetamine and Cannabis) in their telephone text message chats.

The theology student, Udezuka, she said was introduced to her to assist because she was new in the illicit business.

On interrogation, Udezuka said he was paid N2 million for his role and had to do it because he needed the money for his education.

Another attempt to send a consignment of skunk and tramadol 225mg to the UAE by a Dubai-returnee, Nnamani Innocent was also frustrated by the NDLEA operatives following his arrest at Trade Fair complex in Ojo area of Lagos, where he had gone in company of his friend Nwanana Ikechukwu with the cargo to a freight company to process the consignment for export last Tuesday.

In the same vein, NDLEA operatives attached to the SAHCO export shed of the Lagos airport on the same day intercepted a cargo going to London, United Kingdom.
In the consignment containing food items packed in a carton, the four walls of the carton were used to conceal 1.1 kilogrammes of methamphetamine while the freight agent, Agholor Emmanuel, who presented the cargo for export was immediately arrested.

Also, NDLEA operatives last Tuesday intercepted a consignment of 1,340 kilogrammes of cannabis sativa coming from Ogbese, Ondo state in a liquified natural gas truck to Okurikang Okoyong in Odukpani local government area of Cross River State.

Babafemi said following credible intelligence, the movement was monitored for three weeks and upon arrival, 130 bags of cannabis weighing 1.430 tons were recovered from the LNG truck and 13 motorcycles which were hired by the cartel to convey the consignment deep into the forest.

In Kano, four suspects: Ado Shuaibu; Yahaya Shuaibu; Mamman Sani and Umar Yakubu were arrested in connection with the seizure of 229 blocks of skunk weighing 131.1 kilogrammes, while Umar was arrested last Tuesday at Tumfafi village, Kano. The trio of Ado, Yahaya and Mamman were nabbed last Saturday at Garin Balarabe, Maigatari, Jigawa state in a follow up operation.

Another suspect, Aisha Muhammad was arrested in Koki area of Kano with 17 kilogrammes cannabis.

Babafemi said no fewer than four members of a syndicate using dispatch motorcycles to distribute illicit drugs in Lekki area of Lagos were arrested on Sunday 5th February. They include: Tijani Oladapo; Eric Maku; Ahmed Olamide and Adobi Fortune. He said at the time of their arrest, 1.88 kilogrammes of Loud and assorted paraphernalia were recovered from them.

He added that 79.1 kilogrammes skunk were seized during a raid in Patey area of Lagos Island last Tuesday by NDLEA operatives, and a total of 2,370.06 kilogrammes of cannabis and two boats seized at a jetty in Lagos by men of Civil Defence Corps were handed over to the Lagos command of the agency.

Meanwhile, in his reaction to the arrests and seizures of the past week, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Retd) commended the officers, men and women of the MMIA, Cross River, Kano, and Lagos commands for their commitment and professionalism towards ridding Nigeria of the menace of illicit drugs. He however said the agency will continue to target anyone or group involved in the criminal trade without fear or favour even as he urged all NDLEA officers across the country to remain unrelenting in the pursuit of the corporate goal.

2023 Polls: Okowa wants total rejection of Muslim-Muslim ticket

0

Vice-Presidential Candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Governor of Delta, Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa, has called for total rejection of Muslim-Muslim ticket in the forthcoming Presidential election to mitigate religious intolerance and ensure unity in the country.

He made the call at the PDP’s Presidential rally on Saturday in Umuahia, and urged the South-East people to stick with the party for Nigeria’s recovery and good governance.

Okowa charged Abia citizens to work hard for the party’s victory, pointing out that Nigerians had embraced PDP “and those in South East cannot afford to be in opposition anymore”.

“I say this with all seriousness because Atiku Abubakar will win the Presidential election and PDP will return to power at the federal level and when that happens, we want to ensure that Abia State is counted.

“We know that the South East has suffered a lot under the APC and that is why Atiku said he would unite Nigerians and ensure that every part of the country is carried along.

“We want to restore the dignity of the Igbo man and by the grace of God, when Atiku Abubakar and I become President and Vice President, we will be able to ensure that the construction of railway from Port Harcourt to Aba and Ikot-Ekpene is done.

“Atiku is a man who is fair to all and he will work for all Nigerians, including Christians and Muslims to make life better for all.

“We say no to a Muslim-Muslim ticket because that is not good enough for our country Nigeria. We can work together to make Christians and Muslims live peacefully in this country.

“Let me assure you that the Igbos will benefit from the principal positions due to each of the six geopolitical zones,” he said.

He urged to vote for PDP to “take APC out” but remarked that In taking APC out, the opposition must be united to fight the battle.

“Let me reiterate that Atiku will raise 10 million dollars to support businesses across the country; so, we must support him because he is the candidate that is best positioned to win the elections and rebuild our country,” Okowa added.

On his part, Presidential Candidate of the party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, said that his quest for PDP to rescue and rebuild the country was not based on ethnic or religious cards but was to provide Nigerians with good governance.

He recalled that the country prospered when PDP was in charge from 1999 to 2015 and urged the people of Abia and the entire South East to join hands with the party to return Nigeria to the part of glory.

The presidential candidate expressed optimism that the people would come out to cast their votes for the PDP in the forthcoming elections, adding that “PDP is going to win and therefore it is better you are on a winning ticket than a ticket that cannot take you anywhere.

“Do not be distracted by other political parties playing religious or ethnic card. In PDP, we have no religious or ethnic card, we play a Nigerian card, a card that will bring everybody on board and bring a sense of belonging to every part of this country.

“I appeal to you Abians to make sure you remain PDP and PDP remains Abia’s party. I have seen the number of requests you have made and they fall within our policy which we tagged ‘My Covenant with Nigerians’.

“The issue of railways and rehabilitation of federal roads is also there. Aba is the capital of South-East as far as business is concerned.

“I remembered addressing businessmen in this city in 2019 and I assured them that we will set aside funds to rehabilitate and support businesses, particularly in this part of the country,” he stated.

He promised to ensure operationalisation of the Abia dry port which he approved while in office as Vice-President and assured that PDP was prepared to give Abia people what they wanted.

“It is not an issue of ethnicity or religion, it is about good governance. You can bear us witness that when PDP was leading, Nigeria was prospering and that is the time Nigeria became the biggest economy in Africa.

“We created more jobs and more prosperity for everybody in this country. We brought about peace and there was unity and there was not a question of people crying over marginalisation because we created a balanced leadership in this country, so you have no reason not to vote for PDP,” Atiku said.

National Chairman of the party, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, urged the people to vote for the PDP to rescue and rebuild the country from the ruins of the APC-led Federal Government.

He said “voting Labour Party will not help you rather it will help Bola Tinubu who will again marginalise you for another eight years and am sure that is not what you want.

“The PDP is the only alternative because it is an organic party owned by the people and not any individual.

“The APC thrives in distortion of truth, propaganda and lies and I repeat here today in Umuahia that APC has brought shame to all Nigerians.

“The APC came and made things difficult for the people; they brought hardship to Nigerians and I call on you to unite and let’s send them packing,” Ayu stated.

Former Vice-President Namadi Sambo; Chairman, Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wagbara; Chairman, Presidential Campaign Council and Governor of Akwa-Ibom, Udom Emmanuel; Director-General of the Presidential Campaign Council and Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, Abia State Deputy Governor, Sir Ude Chukwu; PDP Governorship Candidate in Abia, Chief Okey Ahiwe, among others attended the rally.

Elumelu Was Not Chased Away By Adonte Community …Too loved to be Chased Away by Any Community in Aniocha/Oshimili

0

The attention of the Ndudi Elumelu Campaign Organization has been drawn to a misleading video and publication purporting that the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, and our Principal, Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu was chased out of Adonte, a community in Aniocha South Local Government Area in Aniocha/ Oshimili Federal Constituency, Delta State.

The said publication is false and laughable product of mischief makers in the opposition who are intimidated by Rt. Hon. Elumelu’s popularity ahead of the February 25, 2023 National Assembly elections as the Minority Leader was not at any time chased away from Andote as purported in the publication.

Instead, the youths of Andote were jubilant and gave Rt. Hon Elumelu a rousing welcome when he visited the community for his on-going Town Hall meetings with stakeholders in communities in Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency.

For clarity, the Minority Leader on Thursday February 8, 2023 visited twelve communities in Aniocha South Local Government Area which included Adonte. The Town Hall meetings have been very successful and greatly appreciated by the communities visited so far including Adonte Community.

To put the record straight, on arriving the entrance of Andote, the convoy met a barricade mounted by some aggrieved youths in the area. However immediately it was known to them that it was their beloved Rt. Hon. Elumelu’s convoy, the barcades were immediately removed as they were never meant to stop or prevent Hon. Elumelu entrance into the community as claimed in the report.

From the entrance to the community, the jubilant youths led Hon. Elumelu in a heroic welcome to the venue of the Town Hall meeting where the entire community appreciated him for his continuous love and care towards them.

Leaders of Andote applauded the Minority Leader for his numerous constituency development and citizen empowerment projects and used the opportunity to list some new needs including demanding Hon. Elumelu’s intervention on the road linking Andote with Abah-unor and other neighbouring communities.

Hon. Elumelu, after listening to the community pledged to work with the authorities of the Delta State Government, the Federal Government and other relevant agencies to ensure urgent intervention on the road.

He also directed for the reactivation of their borehole amongst other critical and urgent needs.

Our Campaign therefore urges the public to completely disregard the said false report as Hon. Elumelu was well-received in Andote and not otherwise as mischievously purported in the misleading publication.

Hon. Elumelu remains loved by the people of the communities in Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency; he knows their needs; he is meeting them sincerely and proactively and no amount of blackmail by way of sponsored misleading information against him will detract from the people in their resolve to re-elect him into the House of Representatives.

Elumelu Pledges Collective Involvement of All In Empowerment Distribution **Engages Aniocha South Communities in Town Hall Meetings…Says Atiku/Okowa Presidency ‘ll Promote Traditional Institution

Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon Ndudi Elumelu has noted the challenge in the sharing of his constituency empowerment items and pledged the collective involvement of all segments, especially Youths in his subsequent empowerment programmes.

Elumelu gave the assurance on Thursday February 8, 2023 as he continued his Town Hall meetings with the People of Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency in Delta State with a marathon engagement of the people of Aniocha South Local Government Area in their various communities.

The Minority Leader said he has continued to spend over 350 million every year in the empowerment of his Constituents, but said he observed, as a result of the town hall meetings, that the challenge of the empowerment programme was basically mode of distribution of the empowering items.

The Federal lawmaker, who visited twelve communities that day, in Aniocha South Local Government Area, where he spent great  time with the people in each of the Communities, listening to them as they articulated their needs, said the town hall meetings was an opportunity to interact with the people with a view to knowing their critical needs, proffering immediate solutions, and taking notes of the ones for budgetary provisions.

The twelve communities visited  included Egbudu Akah, Ejeme Unor, Ejeme Aniogor, Nsukwa, Isheagu, Ukwu-Oba, Umute, Adonte, Abah Unor, Olloh and Olodu where Hon. Elumelu promised to restore electricity, build community Palaces, town hall, reactivation of boreholes, and construction of rural roads amongst other demands made by the communities.

Hon. Elumelu also said it was imperative for the people to let those representing them know their needs, stressing that such information would allow representatives to properly budget and provide the people with the needed infrastructures, and  said for politicians to enjoy a cordial relationship with the people, they must ensure every promise they made during their campaign are  kept.

The federal lawmaker thanked the various communities for the support and warm welcome they accorded him while also promising to bring more development to the various communities that made up Aniocha/Oshimili Federal constituency

He urged them to vote massively for Atiku/Okowa Presidency and all candidates of the PDP with a view to getting landslide victory in the general elections, while also sensitizing them on the need to shun any form of electoral violence.

At the various communities visited, Hon. Elumelu paid courtesy calls to the traditional rulers , and he assured them that the presidential candidate of PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and his vice presidential candidate, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa will give traditional rulers constitutional roles that would enable them to oversee their jurisdiction to benefit the people.

On their parts, the traditional rulers expressed confidence in Hon Elumelu and said that he has remained a unique politician who has genuine passion for the people by all his actions as the representative of the people, even as they honoured him with more chieftaincy titles, signifying endorsement for him to return to the National Assembly.

UN, Diplomatic Community Restate Commitment to Nigeria’s Elections

0

The United Nations in Nigeria and members of the diplomatic community have restated their commitment to supporting Nigeria in ensuring peaceful, credible, and inclusive elections, even as concern was shown over the possible adverse effects on the forthcoming elections due to fuel scarcity, implementation challenges of the currency redesign and exchange process, and violence.

This commitment was given at the first quarterly briefing of the diplomatic community convened by the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Matthias Schmale, at the UN House on Wednesday, 8 February 2023.

The UN Resident Coordinator underscored the importance of peaceful and credible elections for the consolidation of Nigeria’s democracy and that of the African region, and expressed concern on the possible adverse effects on the forthcoming elections of fuel scarcity, implementation challenges of the currency redesign and exchange process, and violence.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Schmale noted, had made some significant progress in preparing and administering elections, and “we need to acknowledge the significance of this. At the same time, INEC is facing some challenges for instance around logistics, power supply, employing and deploying the right personnel at the right time.”

The UN Resident Coordinator expressed concern about some strong statements of intolerance and hate speech across party lines in public space and urged all political parties and their candidates to exercise caution and to adhere to the terms of the peace accord they have signed.

On the UN Strategic Development Cooperation Framework signed with the government of Nigeria, Schmale explained that it was imperative for the UN to support the government in accelerating the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Schmale emphasised amongst other transformative initiatives, the importance of domestic resource mobilization, private sector investment and conducive business environment as critical success factors in moving the needle in achieving greater prosperity for all in Nigeria.

Speaking on climate change, the Resident Coordinator reaffirmed the reality of climate change and its impact in Nigeria and called on the international community to support accelerated climate change adaptation and mitigation measures.

He added that: “Last year’s devastating flood episodes and the Cholera outbreak have shown that humanitarian crises are not limited to the North-East alone. Therefore, we need to support the government in addressing humanitarian challenges outside the North-East.”

0

-From MICHAEL J. EKOKORUWE

The Odiologbo of Oyede kingdom, HRM Dr. Joseph E. Idiareh, Oriagha 1V, has inuagurated ODOGA town as one of the three towns under Oyede Clan, at Odoga Oyede kingdom, Isoko North Local government area of Delta State.

The monarch while inuagurating the executives to pilot the affairs of ODOGA town for one tenure of two years stated that, “the Midwestern States of Nigeria gazette published by authority in Benin City on 1st of December 1976, affirmed that Oyede Development Commitee has Oyede town, Odoga, Okrama and Bethel”.

He maintained that, the publication of the 1976 gazette authorized the inuaguration of ODOGA as a town in Oyede kingdom, and noted that other towns subsist, just as he declared Odoga autonomous town of Oyede kingdom.

He emphasized that the executives of Odoga town now inuagurated, has been empowered to build administrative buildings and engage in the infrastructural development of the area.

The monarch urged the executives to be involved in Oyede kingdom administration, even as he declared Chief Enakeno Apah Itesa as the clan Otota of Oyede kingdom.

The high point of the event was the unvailing of Odoga signpost by the monarch, accompanied by the president general, Surveyor Peter Akarogbe, high Chief Eta Enahoro, the chairman of the ceremony, high Chief Iduh Amadhe, Engr. Isaac Ofu and other Oyede high profile personalities.

For his part, the president of Odoga town, Chief Cleaver Daniels said, “henceforth Odoga is one of the three towns under Oyede Clan and remains the home for all Oyede citizens, visitors and investors”. He urged everyone to build and stay in Odoga, noting that all lands and properties in Odoga are owned by respective families.

Cleaver Daniels enumerated infrastructural development structures required to include, town hall, market / the facilities and proper boundary delineation mark.

He posited that Odoga town shall have three quarters to be named as Oduwe, Omoru and Abakpome and urged everyone to elevate their foundation to between 8 and 9 blocks levels due to 2012 and 2022 flood occurrence.

In his remark, the Patron of Isoko Development Union, High Chief Iduh Amadhe, urged the Odoga town union executives to utilize the opportunity of it’s autonomy and recognition for the development of the area and pledge his committement, just as he commended Engr. Isaac Ofu, former general manager Bank of Industry and all that contributed towards the success of the event.

Kashim Shettima: When Dino Maleya, Reno Omokri sing for drop of grains

By: James Bwala:

Dino Melaye has always had a flamboyant attitude, both in his private and professional life. We just hope that he matures to be as white as the beard that sat on their chins. A sign that he should have reached adulthood by the time he was meant to. The identical white beard was resting on his colleague, and the identical bird was also scanning the political firmament of Nigeria for a grain on the sand.

According to Hussaini Yola in a video that went viral during Atiku’s visit to Yola before the campaigns, claimed that he (Hussaini) and Dino Melaye were friends, who used to take weeds and recently, the most disgraced Nigerian senator in the country’s political history has come out to prove to the world that Indeed, Hissaini Yola has spoken the truth. This makes it normal for Dino Melaye to stand on a political podium to denigrate himself once more, when he lacks the words to tell the people to sell his Boss’s candidature ahead of the February 25, 2023 general elections.

The video of Dino Melaye at one of his campaign rallies, playing his typical role of a wayward boy who abandoned his mother’s upbringing in order to embrace shame, leaving his mother wondering what she had given birth to, was rather mocking to the entire Kogi west, which he had previously represented.

Dino

Many people laughed as they remembered the disgusting situation when Dino Malaye knew he had run out of things to say to persuade the public about the candidate he was standing for and, like a child who had given up on a fight, ran home hurt and barked. His speeches further put the PDP on a tray like he did with the groundnut on his head in one of his moments to mock the Nigerian people.

Dino Melaye goes into further detail about his reasons for remaining a persistent student at the Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria. Instead of emulating Kashim Shettima’s speech to the Emir of Daura and continuing to inform the rally attendees about the APC’s strategy for appealing to the Nigerian people, he took the incorrect path, acting in a charlatan-like manner. There are several ways to distinguish an intelligent personality from a shrinking marginal cost that Dino Melaye has shaped himself into. Whether he agrees with the realities that distinguish him from Kashim Shettima or not, the reality that Dino Malaye watches movies while Kashim Shettima studies books is the foundation on which they function.

However, Reno Omokri, who is his cousin in politics and is traveling to London to gain recognition for the PDP, seems to be feeding the white people with anecdotes about onions and cucumbers rather than waiting for them to inquire about events in Nigeria. In a video that is currently circulating, Reno discussed the kidnapping of the Chibok girls and claimed Kashim Shettima was responsible.

He was referring to the kidnapping of the 276 Chibok School Girls by Boko Haram in the southern Borno region of northeastern Nigeria’s Chibok local government area. Prior to this, Senator Dino Melaye, the PDP spokesman, had insulted Senator Kashim Shettima in relation to the kidnapping of the Chibok girls by terrorists who were still exalting their triumphs in battle some 14 years after Mohammed Yusuf’s execution that marked the beginning of the insurgency.

Senator Kashim Shettima maintains his composure throughout all of this, allowing them to state what they have heard and read from people that are neither now in Borno nor have access to the stories of what actually transpired. But the moment has come for mediocre people like those who openly show their ignorance about the incident or who purposely chose to make Kashim Shettima the scapegoat in this militarized expedition that ended the hopes and dreams of several people who are still held captive.

Reno

When Kashim Shettima vowed to speak up, he was restrained because he knew that if he did, heads will roll for revealing what he knew about the conflict and the role that politics played in the Chibok Girls’ kidnapping by the ruling party at the time.

Dino Melaye and Reno Omokri both held positions as a legislator and an assistant to the president at this time. Can they describe the steps they took to prevent the charlatans from kidnapping the Chibok Girls for ransom to Nigerians? Or would they claim, in their capacity as legislator and advisor, that they are unaware that the military withdrew three days prior to the incident and Nigerian Journalists working in Maiduguri had reported from a letter released by the insurgents about their intention to attack Chibok town on the specified date? Who is the military’s commander? Shettima or Jonathan?

When the crime was committed and 276 Chibok girls were abducted, what action did these committed people take in the form of legislation and assistance to support the government of Borno state at the time, led by Kashim Shettima, in order to exert pressure on the federal government, led by President Goodluck Jonathan, to secure the release of these innocent schoolgirls whose future they used to trade in political games?

Why are they looking to Kashim Shettima as a scapegoat when they know that it was actually the federal government’s failing that caused the situation? With only three days’ warning, journalists in Borno state have already reported for the Daily Trust, Nigerian Tribune, Leadership Newspaper, and a large number of other publications from other media outlets.

Reno in London was quoting a letter purportedly written by Nysome Wike, who is currently the governor of Rivers state and was previously the state’s minister of education, to the Borno administration. However, he never informed his audience about the federal government’s actions at the time when the media accurately reported the approaching risks according to the attackers’ estimates of time. It takes about one and a half hours to go from Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, to Chibok, which is only 117 kilometers away.

President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration saw the Boko Haram battle as a potential Hollywood blockbuster. Dino Malaye and Reno Omokri, who are currently trending on the topic, never found a cause to support the government of Borno state at the time. In some places around the world and on political platforms today, they are consuming the remains of blood, death, and ashes.

The Ukodo Factor and 2023 Delta Governorship

By Dr Festus G Okubor.

Human beings are nurtured and sustained by what they eat and this is the reason why they take care of and give a lot of premium to cuisines and the attendant benefits. Food is inevitable for life, growth, well-being, and evolution. Human beings eat every day. Among the Urhobo people of Delta State and by extension the whole State and even the South-South zone, one very significant food is the Ukodo which has for ages taken the lead in terms of the people’s culinary pleasure. The cuisine Ukodo is symbolic and holds a great attraction for the people. Those who should know will tell you that it originated from the Urhobo and the Isoko. Gradually, it has traveled and it has become something that is eaten and enjoyed by people from other different ethnic nationalities.

A major significance of Ukodo is that it is meant to be eaten by many not just one person or a few. So much goes into the making of Ukodo and as it is being prepared people salivate and expect to partake in the eating. Ukodo is therefore seen and considered as food for all; from kindred, to friends and the community.
Ukodo is a broth that emanates from cooking yams, plantains, goat meat, pepper, and spices. The preparation is usually elaborate and the cooking requires some skills that will make it really worth eating. The aroma of Ukodo can stir an entire neighbourhood into vigilance and in those days when resources were lean and not easy to come by, the cooking of Ukodo was more or less a communal effort as people brought one ingredient or the other as their contribution to the making of Ukodo.

This was the justification for the Urhobo proverb “ukodo adje vwiyo oyen je aria” which in translation meant “it is the ukodo you contribute to that is good to eat”. Therefore, besides Ukodo being the most important food among the Urhobo and Isoko, it has a communal significance of bringing everybody together. It is deemed that no occasion is complete without Ukodo and whoever tastes of it always requests for more.

The significance of Ukodo is becoming prevalent as the countdown to the 2023 Delta State Governorship election unfolds. The leading candidate among the many who are in the race is Rt. Honourable Sheriff Oborevwori, the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, whose appellation and chieftaincy title is UKODO. There is so much in a name and appellation because they are also indicators to what is or what will be. The appellation of Ukodo is not just for recognition for Oborevwori, but it is also significant for the kind of life and disposition associated with Oborevwori who has become a popular politician, grassroots mobilizer, bridge-builder, unifier, consensus builder, and a leading politician of this generation. As earlier pointed out, Ukodo nourishes, satisfies all and whoever tastes of it will always ask for more. Sheriff Oborevwori has both qualities. He has nurtured and satisfied many with his public spiritedness. That is why the majority of Deltans are yearning for him to become Governor of Delta State.

Oborewvori is offering Deltans something that can be described as Ukodo in political terms. It is not just any Ukodo, but it is a sumptuous and life-giving Ukodo that will ensure the welfare and security of the good people of Delta State. It is interesting to add that this Ukodo is predicated on MORE which is the acronym for Oborevwori’s development agenda. For the five million Deltans following Oborevwori and who are familiar with his manifesto, MORE means Meaningful Development, Opportunities for all, Realistic reforms, and Enhanced peace and security. The simple but elaborate manifesto touches on every indices of development that connects the Third World with the aspirations of the developed world. Oborewvori is fixated on the welfare and security of Deltans by ensuring good, quality, and affordable education and healthcare. He has also put forth a template that will catalyze agriculture and boost industrialization for massive employment and wealth creation. His energy programme is fantastic as it will rev up the State’s development capacity. He has also envisaged massive infrastructural development as well as urban and rural development and integration. The manifesto also takes into cognizance the role of information and communication technology (ICT) and how it will impact education, business, especially the digital economy and of course the overall activities of Government. Oborevwori’s manifesto is also apt on peace and security which will engender investment.

This put together gives to Deltans the concept of MORE. Like the Ukodo cuisine, Oborevwori’s Government will nurture and satisfy Deltans and always offer MORE. This is the reason why Oborevwori remains the best bet for the people of Delta State as Governor. He is the man for the job.

OPINION: E. K. Clark and the Abuse of Old Age

-By Friday Ewiwilem

More than ten years ago when he proclaimed to the world that he had turned eighty years of age, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, said that he was already in the departure lounge with his boarding pass to exit the world. He said that at eighty he had done everything there was to be done and that he was ready to bid farewell to the world. As Africans who cherish long life, many people prayed for Clark to live longer in good health, but that he should reduce his propensity to causing trouble. Those who know Chief Clark testify that he is a merchant of trouble who derives psychological and material dividends from trouble. It was this tendency to making trouble and receiving attention that pushed him into the hands of those who used him to write his recent open letter to the Governor of Delta State, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa. At over ninety years of age, Clark shouldn’t be in a position to write that kind of toxic letter laced with falsehoods and recriminations that even a man of sixty should not be associated with how much more a grand old man of over ninety.

For a very old man who claimed he was in the departure lounge more than ten years ago, Clark shouldn’t be commenting on politics. He should live in peace reminiscing and surrounded by his great-grandchildren. But as always he fishes in troubled waters and he allowed unscrupulous elements to take advantage of his pugilistic nature. Those who pushed Chief Clark into writing that vexatious letter wanted to use him to score cheap political point. Unluckily for them, they failed because Deltans and Nigerians know Chief Clark for what and who he really is. Clark is one of Nigeria’s problems. He came into public light nearly sixty years ago and had he demonstrated the kind of altruism and patriotism required of him Nigeria would not be where she is today. Those who know still remember whose corruptly acquired properties were seized by the Murtala/Obasanjo regime in 1975/1976. Nigerians also remember the Federal Commissioner for Information behind the sycophancy of Gowon Must Rule Forever which was one of the reasons for the July 1975 coup that ousted General Yakubu Gowon as Head of State.

The truth of the Warri crisis also points to the intransigency of a man with zero tolerance for his neighbours. The Niger Delta crisis that nearly swallowed Nigeria was also orchestrated for selfish reasons by the old man who lives in opulence at the expense of his fellow Niger Deltans. The colossal failure that the Presidency of Goodluck Jonathan was also the product of Clark who made Jonathan to alienate other ethnic nationalities of the Niger Delta especially the Urhobo and the Itsekiri and thought that the Ijaws could have their way to rule Nigeria through militancy. The result was that the Niger Delta wasted a great opportunity spanning six years. All that Chief Clark always wanted was to be serviced with contracts and the spoils of office. Those who should know can tell us how the money for the Edwin Clark University in Kiagbodo was raised. Clark felt no qualms when State Governors were emptying their State accounts in donations to the University to make him happy as the father of the President then.

Well-meaning Deltans and Nigerians should disregard Clark’s vexatious letter as the work of disgruntled elements who saw an opportunity to use an old man that is known for stirring needless controversies. Every allegation or point made in that letter is false. The accusations of dictatorship, lack of accountability, and betrayal against Governor Okowa are blatantly untrue. Delta State under Governor Okowa embraced Local Government autonomy and augments the Councils’ finances with over 400 million naira monthly. Okowa’s non-interference with the House of Assembly makes it one of the most stable in the country. The State also practices judicial autonomy. The Government under Governor Okowa has always made its dealings public.
Chief Clark made so much ado about loans which are really not what he is claiming they are. Prejudice made him not to read or listen to what the Delta State Government has said over and over about the loans. He should read up more about the loans and he will bite off the ears of his informants. Clark’s position on DESOPADEC and 13% derivation is also very wrong. He has not taken into consideration the poor economic reality and the meager returns from crude oil that has affected not just DESOPADEC, but the national economy.
DESOPADEC accounts are audited annually and he should do well to read a copy.

It is difficult to understand Chief Clark’s grouse with the new Universities. The establishment of the three Universities made Delta State Nigeria’s foremost education destination. This feat which will boost Human Capital Development within Delta State and beyond has earned Governor Okowa accolades. So why is Chief Clark angry?
Clark expressed anger at Okowa’s emergence as Vice-Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and called the act a betrayal. Clark ought to know the exigency that led to Okowa’s emergence. He said that Okowa betrayed Nyesom Wike and Emmanuel Udom. But is Clark not aware that Wike desperately wanted to be Vice-President too, but failed? Clark tried to play god when he said that God will not answer Okowa’s prayers of wanting to be Vice-President, but two days later Okowa received massive endorsement from former Presidents-Generals from the South-East. Many other Governors have also endorsed the Atiku/Okowa ticket.
Clark self-righteously accused other leaders of not speaking against Governor Okowa because they have been compromised. This is really far from the truth. The leaders are satisfied with Governor Okowa’s superlative performance. These leaders live in Delta State and they see and appreciate the works of Governor Okowa. On the other hand, Clark is in Abuja and listening to hearsay from mischief makers. One should think that at over ninety, Chief Clark should be living in Kiagbodo and see firsthand what is going on in Delta State and not remain in Abuja to abuse the privilege of old age.

2023: Oshimili North Communities Express Determination to Re-elect Elumelu …As Minority Leader Further Engages in Town Hall Meetings

Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon Ndudi Elumelu has been assured of the determination of Communities in Oshimili North Local Government Area in Delta State, to re-elect him as the member representing Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency in the National Assembly.

The communities also assured of voting massively for Elumelu and other candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at all levels in the 2023 general elections.

The pledge was made by the various committees on Saturday, February 4, 2023 when the Minority Leader visited the communities in continuation of his engagement with the people of his Federal Constituency in town hall meetings.

The communities had based their decision to re-elect Hon. Elumelu on his impressive performance in the area of quality and sincere representation, constituency projects and citizen empowerment, while commending him for not taking the mandate of the people for granted.

They also made some key development demands in their communities while noting that PDP has been the only party they knew since the return of democracy in 1999.

Hon. Elumelu had maintained that the purpose of the meeting was to further consult with his constituents in the collective effort to ensure maximum wellbeing of the people and further development of the Federal Constituency.

The Federal lawmaker reiterated that the various campaigns embarked on by the party was not enough to engage the people, hence the Presidential Candidate of the Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and the Vice Presidential candidate  and the Governor of Delta State, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa mandated him to reach out to the rural areas.

He maintained that if they vote massively for the PDP and Atiku Abubakar emerges as President there would be more development in the Federal constituency and the State in general, adding that Alhaji Atiku was so passionate about Deltans especially with the rousing reception and assurance he got from Deltans during the Presidential campaign rally in Asaba.

Hon. Elumelu urged them to vote for “Atiku/Okowa for the Presidential, Sheriff/Onyeme for Governorship, Ned Nwoko for Senatorial and Frank Esenwazi for House of Assembly elections.

The Minority Leader met separately with the traditional leaders of the various communities he visited at their Palaces where he assured them of the determination of Atiku/Okowa that traditional rulers play critical roles in governance.

The communities visited were Ebu, Illah, Ani Nwalo, Akwukwu-Igbo, Atuma Iga, Ukala Okpunor, Ukala Okwute, Ugbolu and Okpanam.

On the entourage of the Minority Leader was the Secretary to the Delta State Government, Chief Patrick Ukah, the Chairman of the State Civil Service Commission, Chief Nkem Okwuofu, former Minister for Agriculture, Chief Chris Agbabu, Member representing Aniocha South in the State House of Assembly, Hon Austin Chikazia, Chairman of the State Waste Management Board, Chief Emma Chinye and the Chief Press Secretary to the State Governor, Mr Olisa Ifeajika.

Also with Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu were the Executive Chairman of Oshimili North Local Government, Hon Innocent Esewezie, Executive Chairman of Aniocha North, Hon. Kevin Okwechime, Leaders and Councillors from the various Local Government Legislative Arm in the Federal Constituency, as well as Secretaries to the Local Governments including Hon. Kennedy Okoh among other party stalwarts.

Okowa not a dictator – Ifeajika

Delta Governor and Vice-Presidential Candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sen. (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa, is not a dictator as alleged by Pa Edwin Clark, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr Olisa Ifeajika, has said.

Ifeajika who was speaking on a Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS) TV programme, ‘The Faculty’ monitored on Monday in Asaba, said contrary to the allegation contained in Pa Clark’s open letter, Okowa had remained a seasoned democrat.

He maintained that the governor had consistently maintained and upheld democratic principles and values, reiterating that Okowa had never displayed any trait of dictatorial tendency.

According to him, Commissioners come into the state Executive Council (Exco) meeting with memos and they all debate issues, and democratic principles are upheld in Okowa’s government at all times.

“Okowa is a member of the PDP, and the PDP has a chairman in the state, who is number one party man. But, because the governor is the leader of the party, he works hand-in-hand with the chairman of the party.

“One classical example is the primaries that brought in the governorship flag-bearer in the state. Delegates came to the stadium and voted and everyone saw it.

“In some states, the candidates were hand picked against the wish of the people but that didn’t happen here. It showed how PDP is running the state.

“Okowa is not that kind of man that would put himself on you. Even before he became governor, he has always been one man who believes in fair play,” the CPS added.

On Pa Clark’s allegation that Okowa was a betrayer, Ifeajika deflated the allegation, maintaining that the governor did not in anyway betray anybody.

“Our daddy, Chief E. K. Clark, is a respected father whose opinions are ‘sacred’ that people not just listen to but also go with them.

“And, I also know that before our father left partisan politics, he was always a PDP man and he understands the dictum in politics that says ‘Party is Supreme’.

“We all know the story that at the Asaba meeting, the Southern Governors came together and expressed their wish for a southern president in 2023. It was a wish as far as I am concern.

“Apart from the President coming from the South, they also talked about the southern states going to legislate on the issue of open gracing and the herdsmen menace.

“After all of the talks, they all returned to their different political parties. When they got to PDP, the party said that as an opposition, we cannot go with zoning in order to avoid throwing up a mediocre who they cannot take to the battle.

“The PDP set up a committee to advise it on the zoning issues and the committee headed by the Governor of Benue State, Mr Samuel Ortom, advised the party that it should not zone the presidential ticket on the grounds that PDP is in opposition and needed to open the space for the best to emerge.

“The report of the committee was also submitted to the NEC of the party. They all listened to the report and no one objected to it. So, a primary election was conducted and Atiku Abubakar emerged.

“We did not hear anywhere or from anybody that disagreed with the decision of the party at any point, from the committee level to the NEC meeting and finally, to the primary election.

“After the primaries, it was time for Atiku to pick a running mate. Three persons were picked at last – our own governor, Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa, Udom Emmanuel of Akwa-Ibom and Nyesom Wike of Rivers – all governors from the South-South.

“There were no objections whatsoever from anybody. No voice anywhere said of the three of you lined up, nobody, none of you should take the position.

“So, at the end, based on the parameter that Atiku himself reeled out, he told Nigerians what he wanted in who should be his vice president. He told Nigerians that he saw all the qualities in Okowa, and Okowa eventually emerged.

“We saw how after that, some persons wanted to pull down the roof and tear the umbrella because they didn’t get it. So, how can somebody now begin to say that Okowa betrayed, from this story I have told?

“Okowa was never alone in the race from the point they were selected. So, it could have been any of them. None of the three persons selected said he would refuse to be Vice Presidential candidate.

“We will continue to respect our daddy, E K Clark. Let us make this clear that the part PDP has chosen is a PDP matter. We also know that our respected daddy came out and endorsed a presidential candidate, Peter Obi. He is entitled to it and that is why it is democracy.

“So, the idea of lampooning PDP over the choices it has made does not arise. The truth therefore, is that Sen. Ifeanyi Okowa did not betray anybody,” the CPS said.

On DESOPADEC, he said, as an institution, the commission often sent its budget to the House of Assembly, different from the state government’s budget, pointing out that it putting the budget together, DESOPADEC was always mindful of its 50 per cent statutory entitlement from the 13 per cent Derivation Fund.

He noted that the House of Assembly had a Committee on DESOPADEC which performed oversight function on the commission, affirming that if there was any issue with funding, the Commission would have brought it to the floor of the House.

“If you say that DESOPADEC is not doing enough with the funds allocated to it, it is a different thing. But to say that the 50 per cent does not go to them, I don’t think so,” Ifeajika stated.

While saying that the Okowa-led administration had created a peaceful ambience in the state through its various policies and programmes, the CPS lauded the Deputy Governor of this state, Mr Kingsley Otuaro, for his wonderful roles in the area of security, emphasising that the deputy governor went all over the coastal areas to ensure that peace returned.

FG Raises N130 billion Sukuk loan to build roads nationwide

The Federal Government has shared N130 billion Sovereign Sukuk Issue Proceeds for construction of roads nationwide.

The loan is shared to both Ministry of Work (N120 billion) and the Ministry of Federal Capital Territory Administration (N10 billion) to build roads.

Presenting the dummy cheques to the Ministers of Works (Babatunde Fashola) and Minister of FCTA (Mohammed Bello, who was represented by a permanent secretary in the Ministry, Adesola Olusade), the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Dr. Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed, said the fund is for development of road infrastructure.

She said: “It is my pleasure to welcome you all to yet another historic day in the life of this administration to witness the public presentation of dummy Sovereign Sukuk Cheques to the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing and Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA)

“I am proud to say that the Issuance of Sovereign Sukuk, a project-tied debt instrument, is one of the many innovative and very successful initiatives of this administration towards financing the development of critical infrastructure in the country. The facts on how much the initiative has helped to improve road infrastructure across the country speak for themselves.”

Ahmed disclosed that: “As at date, this administration has invested the sum of N612.557 billion raised through Sovereign Sukuk between 2017 and 2021 for the construction and rehabilitation of key economic road projects in the six (6) geo-political zones and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). In real terms, the amount has been used to construct and rehabilitate sections of 71 road projects covering 2,808.06 kilometers and 4 bridges by the FMWH and sections of six (6) road projects covering 99 kilometers and 19 bridges by the FCTA.”

She added that: “The FMWH and FCTA will be sharing the 2022 Sukuk Issue Proceeds of N130 billion, which was successfully issued by the Debt Management Office (DMO) on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) on December 02, 2022.”

She noted that: “The 2022 Sovereign Sukuk of N130 billion will be released as part of the Capital Expenditure in the 2022 Appropriation Act, which has been extended by the National Assembly to March 31, 2023. As at November 2022, N1.88 trillion had been released as Capital Expenditure, which represents about 40% performance when compared to the total Capital Budget of N4.7 trillion. This informed the need to extend the period to implement the capital component of the 2022 Budget.”

“It is important to add that beside the immense contributions of Sukuk to the funding of critical road infrastructure, the objectives of deepening the domestic capital market and financial inclusion are being achieved by the Government. The private sector and sub-nationals have begun to embrace the instrument and I look forward to seeing more issuances in this regard as this will provide additional asset class for the rapidly growing ethical investors and funds in the economy,” the Minister added.

On her part, the Director-General of the Debt Management Office, Ms. Patience Oniha said since the introduction of the scheme, an effort which led to the issuance of the first Sovereign Sukuk of N100 Billion in September, 2017, the DMO has issued Sukuk four more times bringing the total amount raised as at December 2022 to N742.56 billion.

She said: “From the Sukuk issued between 2017 and 2021, a total of N612.56 Billion was raised and deployed to the construction and rehabilitation of sections of seventy-one (71) roads and four (4) bridges covering a total of 2,820.06km. I wish to commend the implementing Ministries and their various contractors for supporting the DMO in this initiative. Not surprisingly, the two (2) Ministries are also beneficiaries of the N130 Billion 2022 Sovereign Sukuk, whose proceeds will be similarly deployed to road projects.”

She noted that: “The Debt Management Office (DMO) started the journey towards issuing a Sovereign Sukuk some years back, diligently working with experts to get the process and documentation right.
Through the Sovereign Sukuk initiative, the DMO has demonstrated its strong alignment with the policy of President Muhammadu Buhari, on infrastructural development.

“Furthermore, the DMO has positioned itself not only as an agency for managing the public debt including borrowing on behalf of the Federal Government, but as an active stakeholder in the domestic capital market through innovation, investor engagement and collaboration with other stakeholders. These have deepened the market, created benchmarks for other borrowers and promoted financial inclusion by providing a retail product, FGN Savings Bond, as well as, Sukuk and Green Bonds for ethical investors.”

She said that the DMO remained committed to its mandate and market development activities.

The Minister of Works said the nation though now complaining about the debt burden would be grateful in coming years on the assets which were acquired.

He said the roads constructed with the debt have added to improving the economy with creation of more jobs and improving the income of stakeholders.

Lux Tera: Catalyzing responsible leadership, informed citizenship

By Felix Anayo

In the build-up to the 2023 general elections, the Network and Advocacy Group of Lux Tera Leadership Foundation has been at the forefront of organisations working assiduously to drive citizenship education. It has organised various leadership training programmes, targeted campaigns, public enlightenment programmes, youth development initiatives, and community-based initiatives. The Foundation has also organised developmental workshops, in the course of which it generated and spread advocacy materials, to guide the citizenry toward informed political decision-making.

One of the tools it has deployed most effectively is the media, especially through the facilitation of television discussion programmes in this regard. Besides its own branded television programme, it has also, on various occasions and through its programme partners and members of its Think-Tank, expanded the frontiers of national discourse through the deployment and appearance of third parties to drive its developmental narratives, and the one goal of creating a better society, on various media platforms.

For the 2023 elections alone, the organisation has remained consistently visible in the public space through its well-thematized initiatives, including, and especially, through its ‘Advocacy Thursday” interventions. These are targeted, periodic releases, skits, and educational content, which focus on core legal, statutory, and social responsibility steps and issues that would lead to free, fair, transparent, and credible elections. These issues are central to the integrity of the electoral process/outcomes, as well as lasting development and citizenship education.

By ensuring that each such advocacy message addresses specific, current, and urgent matters of leadership, citizenship, general public interest, and the general public good, the Foundation has created a unique, impactful, and admirable approach to sustainably building public awareness. It is working with a carefully selected person with confirmed voices and credibility in the Nigerian media, public and political space. It, thus, now has a committed group of persons who are held together by their convictions about the paradigms for sustainable leadership and followership in Nigeria.

The Foundation’s installment and targeted advocacy work in such a way as to ensure that each advocacy theme builds on the one before it. The result is a series of mutually reinforcing narratives that allow breathing space for absorption and application in everyday life. This has been the approach in its handling of matters about the coming elections. The communication/campaign on the new electoral Act did not come before the one on display on the voters’ register. Nor did the one on the collection of Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVC) come before the advocacy message on the need to register, etc.

The approach allows for a period of assessment, a feedback mechanism, and periodic review that monitors impact, the objectives attainment of the desired impact, and the recalibration of subsequent interventions. All the focal issues for communication, advocacy, and public enlightenment are articulated to improve the people’s understanding of the true meaning of development, better leadership, service delivery in office, a sense of community, improved political decision-making among the citizenry, and a better-governed society.

As we walk into the last weeks before the elections, Lux Tera must be counted among the few organisations that have maintained a consistent focus on improving governance, leadership, citizenship, and political engagement in Nigeria. When its Network and Advocacy Group Think Tank is measured against the background of its task as a platform for the birth of new ideas, promoting discourse, and suggesting solutions for extant and emerging leadership, developmental and citizenship issues in Nigeria, the Foundations stands tall in every sense of the word.

The creative initiative of creating a pool of informed persons who, in addition to being active on their own across several socio/political advocacy platforms and activities of their own, are now part of the Lux Tera team of informed advocates is a unique achievement of the Foundation. By generating, and projecting, new ideas toward creating a better Nigerian society, the Foundation’s well-produced Advocacy materials have been effective in this regard.

The print, electronic and social media, as also Talk Shows and Roundtables, have been veritable platforms for advancing the Foundation’s enlightenment and developmental programs. Its outreach and youth leadership training programs, including the programs organized for school teachers, students, and education stakeholders are all now dovetailing into three main focal channels, namely: measurable political education, the expansion of social consciousness/ group cohesion, and confirmed commitment to, and impact on, the imperative of free, transparent, fair and credible elections in Nigeria.

who was on a courtesy visit to the Minister.
.
According to the Minister, Nigeria will ever remain grateful to the Government and people of India for her support to Nigeria during the country’s anti-colonial struggle that led to Independence.

He pledged full cooperation of the Federal Government with India, through the Nigeria Immigration Service, to put a stop to the activities of unscrupulous persons and syndicates engaging in fraudulent procurement of fake official Nigerian travelling documents to enter India illegally.

APC, EL-RUFAI AND THE POLITICS OF ASO ROCK

-By Austen Akhagbeme:

The currency redesign policy of the central bank of Nigeria, CBN and the accompanying tributaries of troubles since then, are dangerously revealing the inner workings of the Nigerian circuit of power within the Aso Rock presidential villa.

Just recently, the presidential candidate of the ruling party, the APC, threw caution to the wind to insinuate that the hurriedly thought-out policy of the central bank and the fuel crises were aimed at scuttling his presidential ambition by disgruntled elements within the ruling party.

This was immediately denied by the party and the government while the Jagaban himself, beat a retreat and redirected his salvo to the opposition party, the PDP.

But subsequent events have shown that there is an ongoing rift between a powerful centrifugal force within the villa seeking to undo the Tinubu arrangement and those that want it.

Governor El-Rufai of Kaduna state has boldly come out with a story of how that these elements within the villa, who according to him, are not members of the ruling party do work against the tide, hiding behind Mr President to carry out their unpopular activities.

The first Lady’s hurried retweet of this El-Rufai’s narrative and video gave a tacit acquiescence to the Kaduna state governor’s claim. In the TVC interview, El-Rufai tried frantically to exonerate Buhari from this debris while almost swearing with the Koran that Buhari means well all the time, though could still be plagued with normal human frailties, mistakes and all of that.

Now, the question that remains to be asked is: why did it take El-Rufai such a long time to expose the shenanigans of these so-called elements in the villa as a bold and ” truthful” man himself?

Why did Tinubu and his handlers redirect the first salvo to the opposition when it looked as though a grievous mistake was made and then begin to reel out the same colour of accusations and insinuations ever after? Who were they afraid of?

What are we going to do about the powerful party-less cabal who Nigerians didn’t vote for yet controlling the helm of affairs in the darkest of nights to put us in darkness these eight inglorious years?

It is said that there are no wicked leaders but wicked advisers. Who are the next set of possible cabals capable of undermining the next President of Nigeria and what can we do to neutralise such evil gestures when a new president emerges?

Can we all use what is going on now as a guide to go for a candidate with a strong character, strong willpower, guts and proven evidence to show that he can fully be in charge to bring us out of the murky waters where others have left us? Think. Let us rethink again. Because we have just a few days to go.

He said that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is a candidate with wealth of experience on the issues of governance in this country, having served as the Vice President of the country for eight years.

According to Chief. Arhiyor, “You will agree with me that some of us who are members of the union are part of the politics of this country.

“So we are here today to officially let the world know that we support the Atiku/Okowa ticket in the forth coming Presidential elections.

He stated that given the track records of the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, the Atiku/Okowa ticket will solve the myriad of problems being faced by Nigerians today.

The NURTW boss in the state said that, “It is good to know that we are endorsing Atiku/Okowa ticket as our candidates.

“This is because I believe that if we give him the opportunity to become the President of this country, some of the challenges we are facing today, he knows how to tackle them.

“He will not come to tell us stories, like what we have been hearing from 2015 till date from this present government.”

Chief Ariyor stated that the issue of inflation, fuel hike, bad roads,  insecurity, poor power supply and disunity needs attention and advocated that support for the PDP would guarantee a brighter future for the nation.

The group also endorsed the PDP governorship ticket of Sheriff Oborevwori/Monday Onyeme and all other PDP candidates contesting this year’s general elections.

“We are also in support of the governorship ticket of Sheriff Oborevwori/Monday Onyeme and all other PDP candidates contesting for the different offices in this election.

“Therefor, we are officially endorsing all the PDP candidates, as our candidates in this elections.”

Similarly, the Association of Delta Orators and Urhobo Musicians have also endorsed the candidates of the PDP in the coming general elections.

The group said their endorsement for the Atiku-Okowa and Sheriff-Onyeme as well as other candidates of the PDP was in recognition of the party’s antecedents in the past, adding that the current APC administration at the Federal had no solution to the myriad of challenges bedevilling the country.

PDP stakeholders who were present at the meeting include, the Chief of Staff Govt House, Hon. Festus Ovie Agas, Senator Emmanuel Aguariavwodo, State Secretary of the PDP, Engr. Daniel Ossai, Chief Economic Adviser to the Governor, Dr Kingsley Emu, the Director of Protocol, Mr. Ifeanyi Eboigbe; and other party chieftains.

2023 Election: ECOWAS, IPAC task political actors in South East, South-South on peaceful elections

Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has called on all candidates and political parties in Nigeria, especially in the South East and South-South geological zones to more than ever before embrace peace and works towards the credible outcome of 2023 elections in Nigeria.

The Head of Mediation and Coordination of Regional Political Affairs (MCRA), ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Onyinye Onwuka, made this appeal on Wednesday in Owerri at the ongoing Mediation and Dialogue training for political actors in South East and South South Zones, in collaboration with the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) and other stakeholders.

Onwuka, who spoke on behalf of the President of the Commission, Amb. Omar Alieu Touray; and the Commissioner – Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Ambassador Abdel – Fatau Musah, at the fourth and final series of training and interactive engagements, also tasked the political actors to renew their commitments to upholding the contents of the signed Peace Accord and the Electoral Act and Guidelines, stressing that these are what would guarantee peaceful and credible polls.

This, she explained, was part of strategic support and intervention toward a peaceful 2023 general elections in Nigeria.

Onwuka also professed the preparedness of the ECOWAS Commission to sustain her partnership with relevant stakeholders in ensuring the prevention of election-related conflicts and violence, not only in Nigeria but the entire West African region. To this end, she said they are prioritizing creating opportunities and platforms for such interactions to be held which among others include: supporting initiatives aimed at equipping stakeholders with the necessary skills and competencies for the management of election-related disputes through inclusive dialogue and mediation.

In the same vein, the National Chairman of IPAC, Engr. Yabagi Sani agreed with the ECOWAS Commission on the importance of Nigeria to West Africa, and the entire world noted that all Africans and the world look up to Nigeria to deliver a peaceful, free, fair, transparent, and credible election.

According to Sani, ECOWAS is being proactive and alive to its responsibilities through the dialogue and mediation training focused toward peaceful 2023 elections as Nigeria is vital to the security and stability of the West African sub-region and globally.

“So like I said, this training is very timely and appropriate too, to prepare various political parties and key players in the exercise of the 2023 elections on the need to always go the way of peace through dialogue. This is because once we can communicate, you find out that problems are largely solved”, he stressed.

He assured that the participants who are mostly political actors would internalize the essence of the training and work towards free, fair, and credible polls in the country.

On his part, the Head of the Department, of Election and Party Monitoring(EPM), Mr. Victor O. Nwokeabia, who represented the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Imo state, Prof. Sylvia Uchenna Agu, described the program as fundamentally crucial to the in-coming election, noting that no meaningful election could take place in an environment prone to violence.

“I believe that after this event, you will all go home, and inform your candidates and members of your political parties on the importance of Alternative Dispute Resolution”.

Nwokeabia assured that INEC was ready to conduct a violent-free election, assuring that it would no longer be business as usual with BVAS.

He added that other electronic devices procured by INEC for free and fair elections would be used to give Nigerians the best election this year.

Also speaking, the commissioner of police in Imo State – CP Mohammed Barde who spoke through CSP Mike Abattam assured that the security agencies would leave no stone unturned to contribute their quota for a credible election.

He however pleaded with the media for accurate, objective, and unbiased reportage of the election, avoidance of hate speeches by politicians, and the need to educate the people on their rights as established in the constitution.

“As we prepare for the polls, there must be information flow by the media during the pre-election, election itself, and post-election”.

The workshop featured lectures on Dialogue and Mediation processes for the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC)– Nigeria by Professor Joy Onyesoh, Dr. Onyinye Onwuka, and Dr. Brown Odige as well as a goodwill message from Ambassador Musa Sani, Nuhu- -Nigeria’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to ECOWAS through the Senior Councillor, Permanent Mission of Nigeria to ECOWAS; Mr. Makwe Samuel Victor.

Okowa’s excellent performance in Delta justified his nomination as Vice-Presidential Candidate

We have read with keen interest the open letter to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa by elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark.

First we accord him his due respect as an elder statesman and a respected father in our state, but we state categorically that his letter is not a true reflection of the state of affairs in Delta State as the massive achievements in infrastructural and human capital development recorded in the state in the last seven years are visible to all and sundry.

On the allegation of unaccountability and dictatorship, it is on record that Governor Okowa has been very accountable to the people as he has always briefed Deltans on the state of affairs in the state. He holds quarterly media interaction with journalists in the state where issues across the state are discussed and questions asked and relevant answers provided.

The Governor has had cause to relate with the State House of Assembly on all matters concerning the state finances at all times. How can a Governor that ensured full autonomy for the State’s legislature and the judiciary be said to be dictatorial?.

On the allegation of misuse of N250billion 13% derivation fund, nothing can be far from the truth because the said fund is being paid in quarterly instalments and as at last record we have only received four instalments totalling N19.6billion.

Because of the time value of money and inflationary tendencies we decided to discount N100billion. On application to the state House of Assembly, we listed some landmark projects to be completed from the fund and some of them including the Ogheye Floating Market, Koka Flyover and Interchange, Maryam Babangida Leisure Park, Film Village and Zoo, Mother and Child Specialist Hospital and Advanced Diagnostics Medical Centre have been completed, inaugurated and currently operational.

We are also aware that our leader, Chief Clark has made his own political choice by endorsing a presidential candidate of another political party which we agree and respect as his own fundamental right, but we hold the view that it is not democratically nor constitutionally out of place for other persons to also have right to associate with others which is equally legitimate.

We are all aware that the country is so divided and the rhetoric that tends to divide the country further along the line of North and South dichotomy cannot do the country any good hence we urge that persons of all class need not engage in divisive actions or uterances.

As well meaning Nigerians we expect that senior citizens should promote actions that tends to unite the country and not that which would further divide us.

The Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar won  the party’s primary on the account of a free and transparent votes of delegates of the party across the country.

The constitution of our country is very clear that once a Presidential Candidate emerges, he is duty bound to chose a running mate and by tradition from the other side of the country.

It couldnt have been the right thing to say that we should have rejected the nomination because if we had, other persons would have also accepted it.

We will continue to respect Chief Clark despite the recent attacks on Governor Okowa and we also put it on record that the highly respected elder statesman had supported us in the past up to 2019 and had cause to commend the Governor for his sterling accomplishments in the state.

So we will not begrudge him because he has chosen to support someone else this time around.

PROF AKPOTU APPEALS TO ISOKO PEOPLE TO EVALUATE TRUE POLITICAL POSITION

  • Says Isoko Senatorial Ambition Beyond Party’s Affiliation.

From MICHAEL J. EKOKORUWE

The President General of the Isoko Apex social cultural organization, ISOKO Development Union (IDU), Prof. Chris Akpotu, has again appealed to all Isoko sons and daughters, home and diaspora to critically evaluate the true position of the Isoko peòple politically, embrace the truth and take a fare share at the National Assembly as we approach the February 2023 general elections.

The number one Isoko citizen made this known at the Isoko Unity House when he played host to journalists. According to him, the resolution that birthed ISOKO FOR SENATE 2023, was not orchestrated by Prof. Chris Akpotu, but the entire Isoko people, in all-inclusive annual general conference of 27th December, 2021.

He noted that the conference which comprised people of multiparty and facets of interest, with common old parlance, is premised on personal interest, but that would be suicidal to Isoko collective interest if remained unchecked.

He posited that, all Isoko traditional rulers, all Clan Presidents general, Isoko Branches Council, Stakeholders, Patrons, Board of Trustees, Women & Youth wings we must as a matter of necessity understand the bond decision reached, as unshakable, sacrosanct, and as a people, we must prove the political mettle in the Isoko Senatorial ambition.

Akpotu added that, consultation made to sisters’ nations – Ijaw and Itsekiri, March 8, 2022, and Sunday March 27, 2022, respectively to solicit ethnic support, haven considered the lopsided, oppressive elective offices shared in Delta State, thereby making Isoko nation play second fiddle in national political discourse, cannot be wished away under any guise of pretentious good relationship.

Akpotu stated that, the Itsekiri, through former Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, was Governor for 8 solid years, a political position/seat that is far better and valuable than 50 Senators put together.

The Professor of Management Sciences, added that the Senate seat is not councilorship or appointive position that requires personal choice, noting that the chamber is a position for ingenuity and intellectuals.

The erudite scholar said, despite the long natural and cultural fraternity with other nationalities, arising from socio-cultural, marriage, political, and by divine arrangement of belonging to same Senatorial district, Isoko had been maligned. It is crystal clear that the Ijaws, through Senator James Manager, held sway, clinching the Senatorial seat for the past 20 unbroken years in the office that belonged to 3 ethnic nations.

“A Senator must be seen to have the audacity to address issues frontally, as well as confront other Senators in the hallowed red chambers with novel positions. It is expected that as a party or ethnic nationality, we must be mindful of our representation, and not fanning the embers of political sentiments”, he added.

“SIR. AYODELE OGHOGHO OTHIHIWA, FCA, an Isoko economic grandmaster, a man of intergrity, right standing, whose sense of experience is quite massive, a world financial expert with wonderful international connections, came under the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), but wickedly, he was frustrated and pushed aside for selfish reasons like a used eva-water-can”.

“Now, to right the political dejection, to right the denial, to right the overbearing ethnic insults and give Isoko a political redemptive voice, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has presented to us another indomitable Isoko SENATORIAL CANDIDATE, Hon. Joel Onowoakpo Thomas, whose social and educational features are similar to Sir, Ayodele Oghogho Othihiwa. Hon. Onowoakpo, a man with robust credentials, a man with creative experience, a financial expert who broke the “revenue jinx” both in Delta State and federal, former Chairman, Delta Board of Internal Revenue (DBIR), a seasoned gentleman with mega pedigree and seasoned Chartered Accountant of great significance, eminently versed in Tax consultancy services. He has defiled comparison, and so, we will not toy with this ample opportunity of sending him to the red chambers”.

Akpotu maintained that, “the era of party is supreme is “antiquated.” Party dominance is typically nothing without stringent recourse to capacity, commitment and effective representation. Party is supreme will experience political oblivion if equity, fair play, justice and good conscience is considered a taboo in a democratic environment where 3 brothers ought to share national cake.

“Therefore, Isoko people must rise up against this oppressive political marriage that is at variance with our collective decision and vision”. he added.

He further said, “Relatedly, the communique issued by the conference of Clans President Generals 18th March, 2022, arising from a known elective arithmetic cannot be jettisoned over night, otherwise they see Isoko as a conquered territory. We will throw in the towel of continued fruitless support because Isoko nation had paid her dues supporting other ethnic groups”.

He emphasized that, If the political romance and marriage is not appreciated and compensated proportionately with the Senatorial office, by political leaders and/or powers that be, then people are just been economical with the truth. We must begin a new behavioural conversation as a people and strategically preach the growth of Isoko nation, not the interest of one individual.

Akpotu noted that, as a nation, we cannot be deprived politically, yet coarced to support mediocrity and inexperience that will not enhance Isoko political survival. Our support to Hon. Joel Onowoakpo, has no party affiliation. We say NO to political conspiracy against Isoko Senatorial ambition on the account that Isoko interest is paramount and sacrosanct.

He enjoined Delta South Senatorial district, both professionals and business class, to reciprocate same political knot and gesture of supporting Isoko nation without dissenting political actions. It will amount to absurdity to discuss mediocrity in the presence of excellence.

He stated that, the Isoko APC candidate, Hon. Joel Onowoakpo, is the way to go, and as the cultural and administrative mouth piece of the Isoko Nation, “I say with precision that, Isoko is bleeding politically and we must navigate to correct the error by stitching the bleeding spot to avoid being amputated”.
