The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has said drugs worth over a billion were seized from 380 arrested suspects since the beginning of 2020 in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
Borno State commandant of NDLEA , Mr. Joseph Icha said this on Wednesday while briefing journalists on efforts of his command to control the sales and uses of illicit drugs.
He also revealed that about 15 people have been admitted and are receiving counseling at the Command’s drug remand unit.
Icha noted he as well as some of his staff have undergone a level of research to know how so much drugs were trafficked into Borno and have found out that a whole lot of drugs were hidden in food stuffs transported to the state, this enable traffickers evade detection at various check points.
He lamented that a lot of drugs were consumed during the COVID-19 lockdown in the state, stressing that: “Massive consumption of hard drugs took place during the hours people spent inside their homes.
“Although the lockdown created several challenges affecting the heavy movement of drugs, some people used the leeway of food stuffs to bring in drugs for the consumption by unsuspecting young people.
“We arrested 380 offenders with drugs worth over N1 billion between January to July this year in Maiduguri. We have also found out that the environment around the Maiduguri Zoo became a vital area of consumption zone for drug addicts in the capital city.
“Apart from the fact that over ten tonnes of drugs were seized, we also seized vehicles bearing them and sealed homes where they were found in large quantities.”
The Commandant said that the pattern of consumption still remains cannabis, cocaine and heroine, that are consumed mainly by privileged young people due to the pressure of the environment coupled with insurgency.
He asked that for proper transparency, all the law enforcement agencies in the State to deliver all their seized drugs for proper accountability.
He however revealed that about five military and paramilitary agents have been arrested during the period under review for various drug law offences.

The United Nations Air Services have been suspended in the troubled North East.
This followed an attack on one of it’s helicopters in Damasak, Borno State by terrorist group.
The helicopter had hoped to pick some aid workers in Damasak to Maiduguri on Friday when he had to abort it’s plan on getting shot by some members of the terrorist group, Boko Haram.
This compelled the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in the country, Mr. Edward Kallon to suspend all air expedition in the area for a week.
A source at one of the UN agencies in Maiduguri told our correspondent anonymously that all aircrafts and helicopters have been grounded in Maiduguri.
He said they have been asked not to underground any expedition out of the town.
He said the attacked helicopter had two holes and could not land in Damasak to pick the people he had gone to pick as he had to immediately turned back to Maiduguri.
The Head, Public Information Unit, United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN-OCHA) in Nigeria, Ms. Eve Sabbagh confirmed the attack.
She said a statement would soon be released to the press.
More than five years after the termination by the Nigerian Maritime and Safety Agency (NIMASA), of maritime security contract it entered with Global West Specialist Vessels Limited, a company said to be sponsored by ex-warlord, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, ( aka Tompolo), the agency’s new Director General, Dr. Bashir Jamoh, has testified that the contract actually boosted NIMASA’s revenue.
The contract was not only canceled, the company and Tompolo are also still being prosecuted over the engagement, regardless of the fact it boosted NIMASA’s operations and revenue.
Speaking to newsmen in Lagos recently, Dr Jamoh also said that there was a Public Private Partnership arrangement with Global West adding that the engagement of the firm was not limited to maritime security adding that their involvement with NIMASA included enforcement of certain aspects of the agency’s mandate, Flag and Port State control.
He explained that the arrangement was also such that it was only when an increase in the revenue profile of the agency was recorded that Global West could get paid.
Dr Jamoh also disclosed that a total of 25 intervention boats were procured by Global West until it ran into problem with the current administration and the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC, had to move in.
He said: ‘‘The Jonathan administration introduced the Global West alternative, which came in form of Public Private Partnership arrangement and the scope did not limit them to maritime security; it included enforcement, Port and Flag State control.
“They also looked at our own revenue as their payment was based on the agency’s increment in NIMASA’s revenue resulting from their activities.
“If as a result of their effort, NIMASA makes extra monies, it was from the extra that they got paid.
“Today, we have it on record that they had about 25 intervention vessels, some, because of their issue with EFCC, are no longer serviceable but we still have some serviceable vessels that are in the custody of the EFCC.
“All these issues are under investigation and we are yet to get to the end of the investigation.”
Speaking on the development, a former Director of Shipping Development, NIMASA, Captain Enisouh Waredi said that the strategy that was deployed to increase NIMASA’s revenue was just intelligence.
According to him, while a lot of shipping firms tried to short-change NIMASA by under-declaring what the vessel was carrying and paid less of the three percent bench mark, the agency, through its intelligence gathering mechanism, already had a prior knowledge of the content of the vessel.
He revealed that before Global West intervened, NIMASA was making about $10million – $12million per annum but the intervention raised the figure to about $19.5million per month, saying that; “It was from this increase that Global West got paid for its services.”
On the local currency revenue, it was gathered that before the engagement of Global West, NIMASA was making about N30billion per annum but the intervention raised the figure to about N80billion.
Waredi also explained that when the contract was advertised, a lot of people thought it was unprofitable but Global West went for it adding that for over one year it did not make profit until it changed strategy and deployed intelligence to its operation and started making money for NIMASA afterwards.
On connection with Tompolo, Waredi said: “Global West approached several banks for loan and none listened to them before they approached Tompolo who helped them out with the money to acquire their boats.
“That was how the whole Tompolo’s boats came about; he was never part of Global West neither was he a Director or Shareholder in Global West.
“Even after Global West acquired those boats, it was still running at a loss until it was advised to change its strategy. It was at this point that I was directed to draw up a strategy on how Global West should operate and how NIMASA should respond.
“It was after the change in strategy that Global West started making money for NIMASA and getting paid.”
The Maiduguri Zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Thursday, July 2, 2020, secured the conviction of one Lawan Zanna Ajimi before Justice Aisha Kumaliya of Borno State High Court.
He was prosecuted on one-count charge of cheating to the tune of N1,250,000.00 (One Million Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira).
The EFCC was able to establish that the convict lured his victim into giving him a Honda Accord 2005 Saloon car in exchange for a plot of land which he fraudulently claimed was his.
The charge read: “That you, Lawan Zanna Ajimi sometime in 2014 at Maiduguri Borno State within the jurisdiction of this honourable court dishonestly induced one Ba’ari Baba Ali Ajayi to deliver to you a Honda Accord Saloon car valued at the sum of N1,250,000.00 (One Million, Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira only) that the said car would be used for the exchange of a plot of land and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Sections 320 (a) and 322 of the Penal Code Laws of Borno State Cap. 102 Vol. 3 of 1994 respectively.”
He pleaded guilty to the charge upon arraignment, prompting prosecution counsel, Khalid Sanusi to ask the court to convict and sentence him.
Justice Kumaliya convicted and sentenced him to six months in prison or pay N100, 000.00 (One Hundred Thousand Naira) as fine.
In another development, one Allen Abel was convicted by Justice Kumaliya but reserved his sentence till August 10. Abel was prosecuted on a 20-count charge by the Commission’s Maiduguri Office for offences that border on forgery, possession of false documents, impersonation and obtaining by false pretence, food items valued at N12, 879,800.00 (Twelve Million Eight Hundred and Seventy Nine Thousand Eight Hundred Naira).
He was arraigned alongside Suleiman Adamu, Usman Adamu and Kingsley Madubuagu for conspiracy having fraudulently awarded a contract for the supply of food items in the name of Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development (FMHDSD), under the Special Intervention Programme (SIP) for the Federal Government’s School Feeding Programme to their victim.
Count three of the charge read: “That you, Allen Abel, Suleiman Adamu and Usman Adamu sometime between February and March, 2020 at Maiduguri, Borno State, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court with intent to defraud obtained 1313 (One Thousand Three Hundred and Thirteen) cartons of spaghetti and 480 (Four Hundred Eighty) bags of rice both worth N12, 110,000.00 (Twelve Million One Hundred Ten Thousand Naira) only from one Lelle Hyelwa Sini of Lelle Foresight Construction Co. Ltd. under the false pretence of executing a contract of supply of food item, purportedly awarded by Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs Disaster Management and Social Development (Federal Government School Feeding Programme), under the Special Intervention Programme (SIP), which you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1 (1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and Punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.”
Abel, who is the first defendant in the matter, pleaded guilty to all the charges, while his co-defendants pleaded not guilty.
Following his plea, prosecution counsel, Benjamin Manji prayed the court to convict him as charged and similarly urged the court to fix a trial date for the other defendants.
While defence counsel, A. M Audu pleaded for leniency, Justice Kumaliya convicted Abel as charged and adjourned the matter till August 10, 2020 for sentence and August 11, 12, and 13 , 2020 for commencement of trial. He ordered the remand of both the convict and the defendants in the Nigeria Correctional Centre.
Without offence to modesty, Adams Oshiomhole can be aptly described as a quintessential character; a public performer, a motivational orator with a unique gift of the garb. He’s an exemplary leader of men. He is, sometimes, caustic and corrosive with his tongue, depending on the magnitude of the matter and the size of his prey.
The above description quite encapsulates and explains the many twists and turns that has become the chequered life of the erstwhile Indefatigable unionist.
He’s a Passionate believer of his ideas and goals such that when he takes side with you, he goes all out, using methods and ways that bothers on both the conventional and the unconventional, the esoteric and the familiar, all in a bid to protect, preserve and project you to the consternation of your adversaries.
Oshiomhole loves to the extreme and probably hates to the extreme too. The very reason why it is not difficult to locate where his loyalty lies in any matter that he’s involved with. With a sharp response to frayed stimuli, he knows how to make a fight and how to recruit others to do the same.
This character combination of the good and the grotesque has earned him ovation, applause, followership, loyalty among his teeming admirers over the years. It has equally brought to his doorstep, unimaginable pains, hate and betrayal in his journey to stardom and out of stardom. But such is life: a potpourri of the good, the bad and the ugly.
Adams Oshiomhole, no doubt, has paid his dues and has contributed a large quota to the growth of labour relations in Nigeria in particular and to governance and partisan politics in general.
A time was, in Nigeria, when Oshiomhole was the vociferous voice and the masked face of the working class against the exploitation of Labour by Capital. He was lampooned by the establishment as unnecessarily confrontational and fixated in his demands for a fair deal from the government on the part of the workers. But this was not without pains, frustration and even harassment from the powers that be.
Nevertheless, all these formed the foundation for his rise to political stardom as he went on to contest, lost, fought and won the governorship elections in Edo state through the courts. He went on to win a second term in office after a remarkable performance that has left indelible marks in the annals of history in Edo state till tomorrow. Oshiomhole practically turned remote villages to mini-cities, accessible to governmental presence and improved social and economic life such as never witnessed before.
His love and preferences for mentorship became his albatross, which culminated into the ugly events of the recent past and puts him on the spotlight. Those who wants to play politics with his predicament has quickly and painfully forgotten so soon how he stake his life for the emergence of his belligerent foes but has quickly sewn for him to wear, the toga of a desperate Godfather.
To say that what they did is unfair is to be simplistic: it is truly evil and malicious. But life itself doesn’t play fairly; the reason why Oshiomhole should take whatever comes to him with philosophical calmness as he tries to re-enact himself in the hearts of those who loved him and wished him well. In this race called Life, there are pains and there are gains. Oshiomhole’s good records cannot be wished away.

I am an ardent follower of Nigerian politics, especially because of its murky nature. Having read series of write ups on the emerging political brouhaha between Obaseki and his ousted god-father in Edo State, Adams Oshiomole, I have come to an un-researched conclusion that politicians in Nigeria would stop at nothing to get what they desire.
Many people have said horrible things against the ruling party, whose candidate Godwin Obaseki emerged as Governor in the 2016 General elections in Edo State. Especially against his god father, who ensured his emergence in 2016.
Who is a God-father? A God-father, is a father figure who provides guidance and mentorship to his god-son. A writer had made a detailed analysis on the genesis of godfatherism, which dates back to the yore days of Roman Catholic. He referred to godfatherism as an ecumenical concept; a cosmopolitan reality. But it has been misplaced and wrongly deployed in Nigerian politics.
Perhaps, we should go back to history. In 2016, Mr Ize-Iyamu, a former secretary to the Edo State Government, had a bright chance to become the APC governorship candidate for that year’s election.
Most likely, he would have won the general election, but for Oshiomhole who, as governor then, imposed Mr Obaseki on the party. Several APC members and supporters, including Mr Oshiomhole’s allies, preferred Mr Ize-Iyamu in 2016, before Oshiomhole favoured his opponent, Obaseki. This was despite the fact that Ize-Iyamu led Oshiomole’s 2012 re-election campaign.
Governor Obaseki, Adams Oshiomhole’s favourite then, was widely considered as an ‘outsider’ in the APC and in the politics of Edo State since he was recruited into Oshiomhole’s administration as a technocrat from the banking sector.
Governor Godwin Obaseki rode on the back of Oshiomole, his predecessor and former Governor of Edo State. I opine that he owes the State a huge apology for stepping on the toes of his destiny helper.
It is worthy of note that in his new party, People’s Democratic Part, Godwin Obaseki’s selection has also been kicked against by some stakeholders. They described his emergence as seeming favoritism.
Governor Godwin Obaseki joined the PDP after he was denied the chance to seek re-election under the platform of All Progressives Congress, the party under which he governed Edo state for the past four years.
It becomes worrisome to think God-fathers in Nigerian Politics receive some sense of ingratitude in return, after helping their protegees to the exalted stool they covet.
Away from the tussle between God father and son, the big question is does APC still have chances to win in Edo State? It is a question that baffles many minds, which only September election has clear answers to.
Starting with PDP structure, the emerging facts that PDP may split up before September, just because a strange force, called Obaseki has intruded. A ticket he clinched after many believe he must have been made to pay a huge amount of money to join the PDP. In fact, some people have interpreted Governor Wike’s ‘tax collectors’ comment to mean that the Edo governor paid a so much to get the party ticket.
Sources within the party said although they have nothing against Obaseki joining PDP, they however opposed the illegality to impose him on many who have been on ground and working for the party through thick and thin.
Allowing Obaseki to purchase nomination form and emerge as the candidate of PDP shows how weak PDP’s party structure is. They apparently do not have a strong structure, capable to combat the already existing structure APC has in place.
Rather than put the State’s interest first, Obaseki spent the meagre resources of the State to get into the camp of the political enemy; a camp to which he had been a complete alien until he began to look for a platform for his re-election.
Obaseki did not win the last general elections, APC did. The party, mosgt especially Oshiomole threw its weight behind Obaseki, not the other way round. A swerve in parties would still not alter the perceptions of the people of Edo State of Obaseki, who today is seen as a political learner, who because of his selfish interest did not mind destroying a party structure. In 2016 when Oshiomhole practically campaigned for Obaseki, as if his name was going to appear on the ballot.
APC’s choice of Osagie Ize-Iyamu, a Pastor, Politician, and former Chief of Staff and Secretary to the Edo state government is a brilliant idea. Note that in the 2016 Edo State Gubernatorial election, Ize-Iyamu was the gubernatorial candidate of the Edo state People’s Democratic Party.
He was the National vice-chairman, South-South Zone of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, who served as Director General of Adams Oshiomhole’s 2nd term Campaign Organisation. A victory that was landslide.
Ize Iyamu has fought many political battles, which he had tremendous wins. He was also the Coordinator of Goodluck/Sambo Campaign Organisation.
A graduate of University of Benin, where he graduated with an LL.B (Hons), Ize Iyamu definitely has a rich experience in the Nigerian politics, especially the Edo kind.
His defection back to the APC in November 2019 further worsened the wrangle in the state branch of the party, as it narrowed Obaseki’s chances in his previous party. He became a threat to the incumbent.
In the wake of the jostle for the party nomination form, seven aspirants stepped down to endorse Ize-Iyamu as the faction’s consensus candidate, an agreement that was terminated by three of the aspirants that later went ahead to purchase the party form.
A party member had revealed that APC started with Ize-Iyamu as their consensus candidate because they believe with unity, APC can remove the current governor.
In 2016, Pastor Ize-Iyamu ran against Obaseki in the governorship election. Many observed that the process which culminated in his “loss” to the State APC machine superintended over by Oshiomhole and backed by the Federal Might.
Even at that, Ize-Iyamu proved himself to be a difficult opponent to beat. Although Obaseki was declared the winner, Ize-Iyamu got the people’s approbation.
In a reversal of parties, Ize-Iyamu is in APC, and has emerged as the party’s standard bearer while Obaseki has controversially emerged the candidate of the enemy camp- the PDP.
Now, this is 2020 and the political game has completely changed for the trio of Oshiomhole, Obaseki, and Ize-Iyamu. There has been a reversal of roles.
Obaseki, who was once a darling, has become Mr Oshiomhole’s political nightmare. They have fought a protracted political battle that sapped the strength from the Edo governor. He was eventually disqualified, most likely through Oshiomhole’s prompting, from contesting in the APC governorship primary, thereby forcing him to defect to the PDP.
Obaseki, already exhausted after his battle with Oshiomhole and the APC, entered his new party, the PDP, only for him to encounter another challenge –some of the aspirants who were already in the party before him vowing that they would not step down for him.
Ize-Iyamu at the moment, is a candidate with state-wide appeal, which is a function of his grassroots network and mobilizational dexterity. With his agenda, Pastor Ize-Iyamu is set to take the lead in the urgent task of transforming our state and taking it to the next level in infrastructure and human capital development.
Governor Godwin Obaseki has made some miscalculated steps in the course of governing the State, that has affected his love by the Edo people.
Another emerging question is what brand would Obaseki flaunt during the September 19 governorship election? An already dented brand, soiled by selfish interests, bickering and political misdemeanour.
Obaseki, should have learnt from the likes of former President, knowing fully well, that the power of incumbency may not guarantee his victory. Incumbent leaders such as former President Goodluck Jonathan was dethroned from their exalted positions.
Obaseki bit the finger that fed him. He took on his godfather, leaving the State in an abysmally low level of leadership. He made the blistering heat of politicking take over the administration of the State.
He embraced PDP, a decision that places him on an untrustworthy stead. Of course, PDP members and leaders should also be ready to receive a raw deal from Obaseki and be barred or banned from the Government House in case Obaseki wins.

The clergyman maintained that Catherine Ilolo was called the ‘Dorcas of our time’ as women she has helped in various ways mourned her sudden death, especially contributions and impact made on the society and womenfolk as many depended on her for monthly income.
Archbishop Apena said, Hon. Mrs. Catherine Ilolo was always in government because of her faithfulness, adding that she started politics in 1991 and was among the first state assembly members during the defunct Olorogun Felix Ibru administration. “She remained in successive governments through appointment and never misbehaved as a politician.”
Apena stated that Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, Governor of Delta State called to commiserate with the immediate family members over the passing on of the former lawmaker. “She loves people and was President of Ewheyae Isoko women organization, a position that gave her the role of a mother in many years.”
According to Archbishop Apena, Hon. Mrs. Catherine Ilolo “trained her children in the way of God. She sent them to expensive schools and inculcated in them discipline and good character,. He noted that she was always punctual to church and donates towards church projects willingly. She looks around for the widows, indigents in the church and quietly makes provision for them.”
The clergyman noted that, “Hon. Mrs Ilolo paid her tithes regularly and always attends Sunday Bible studies. Since I knew her, she has not quarreled with people that leads to settlement and was very good counselor to families that had problems. I played the role of a father while she was alive and the husband never complained to me any day”, he said.
–Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) – By Austen AKHAGBEME:
When Afenifere, the yoruba cultural and political organisation signed the fatal accord with former President Obasanjo in his bid for a second term, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu saw ahead of them all. Which is why the PDP whirlwind that swept the South West in 2003 general elections, left Bola Tinubu unscathed as he was the only man standing.
This gives credence to the general notion of Tinubu’s widely proclaimed invincibility and political sagacity. This Lion of Bourdillon sure knows when to roar and when to devour his prey.
His brand of politics, fondly referred to as Jagabanism, has become more of a political philosophy and Ideology readily deployed to capture political power and advantages especially in its immediate catchment of western Nigeria.
Ignoring Tinubu at any political equation where he hold sway is to one’s peril. He’s deftly dangerous and can dare a monster for a fight. In the days of NADECO with a life practically lived in the trenches against General Abacha’s misrule, Bola Tinubu with a host of others shone like a million stars, tormenting the despotic regime while amplifying the repressive voice of the disenchanted.
When he picked up the gauntlet at the dawn of our nascent Democracy, he set the standard for a populist dispensation when governance is akin to the well being and Comfort of the people. Till date, that template is there for any in coming governor of Lagos state to adhere to. It has become a roadmap to performance and accountability.
Those who know him closely are often quick to equate him to or describe him as an institution and dispensation of the “Jagaban order”, where winning is the game and mentoring the hallmark.
What has become known as the “Tinubu boys” are everywhere in our political space; holding forth in their individual capacity, the jagaban ideal and loyalty.
It is on this premise that I think it is myopic for anyone to gloat, crowl or revel at the purported fall of the grandmaster himself simply because a troubled party was being arranged or rearranged to save it from a possible implosion that could have led to its extinction.
Even before now, there are those who felt that godfatherism of the type practiced by the Asiwaju, especially in Lagos state, is overwhelmingly self serving, selfish and undemocratic. Some went further to describe Lagos as a personal fiefdom, conquered or annexed by the Tinubu political dynasty.
They’re miffed by his continuous grip on the state jugular, a knee on her neck that disallowed the state to breathe at will. Others sees him as a traitor of the collective yoruba struggle, sacrificed on the altar of his first love; his 2023 Presidential ambition. The very reason why others naturally felt a dead blow has been delt to the collective politicking and in-house mudsliging which seems to favour him ,when the NWC of his party, the APC was dissolved of late.
Love him or hate him, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has become a factor and a political force, good or bad, in this country. His mentorship, magnanimity and mustered solidarity, over the years among Nigeria politicians will continue to be his greatest advantage in times of crisis. Whether he’s a good man or not, he’s got one thing going for him- the ability to identify leadership traits, harness and project them for the possible benefit of all. Vice President Osinbajo and Former governor Fashola are a shining example in this regard. We have truly not heard the last of the Jagaban, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, yet.

…Commissions Doctors’ Quarters At Naifor Island, Warri South West LGA
Another milestone in the annals of project execution and commissioning was recorded Thursday, June 25, 2020 as the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC formally handed over a fully furnished doctor’s and nurses’ quarters on the Island community of Naiforgbene directly overlooking Warri metropolis in Warri South West Local Government Area of the State.
Accompanied by the Executive Director, Projects, Hon. Daniel Mayuku, the Executive Director, Planning, Research & Statistics, Comr. Amb. Shedrack Lucky Agediga, the Executive Director, Social Services, Barr. Leonard Anoka, the Member representing Ijaw nationality on the Board and some Heads of Departments and Units as well as executive aides, the Commission’s helmsman disclosed that the present project was proactively conceived in consonance with the highly impactful contributory health insurance scheme initiated by His Excellency the Executive Governor of the state, Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa to take care of the health needs of the people in all parts of the state.
He said the community was a proud beneficiary of the project, having been chosen in the pilot scheme by the state-owned Contributory Health Insurance Commission, and enjoined them to do all within their powers to protect it for their use.
Bashorun Askia said: “The project and facilities thereof are entirely yours. Own them. Protect them. Maintain them, as you would your personal property. The Chairman of the Commission had always reiterated this much in our weekly television broadcast, DESOPADEC WEEKLY, where he appeals to every community in the mandate area to always own and protect any project in their respective communities.
“This is the new policy direction of the Commission and I enjoin your community not to be an exception in this regard by setting a good example for others. We have it on good record that the generator provided by the Commission for the community has been stolen and part of another building project vandalized by community hoodlums and arsonists. This is very demotivating for us as an interventionist agency of government making sure your infrastructure needs are met.
“Any further abnormally in this regard would certainly discourage us. If we have given you so much, it is incumbent on you to take responsibility to protect them,” he said.
Speaking also, the Executive Director, Planning, Research & Statistics, Comr. Amb. Shedrack Agediga disclosed that the project was demand-driven as against the old order where projects were executed at the whims and caprices of the powers that be. He said the new bottom-up direction forms the template guiding the present Board. He therefore admonished the community to make the best use of it so that they could expect more from the Commission.
The Member representing Ijaw nationality on the Board, Dr. Paul Bebenimibo also shared his thoughts on the impact of the project. He said the Commission was very mindful of the health needs of the people hence its decision to key in and respond adequately through the current project. Earlier, a community representative, Hon. Denbo-Denbofa Oweikpodor had expressed gratitude to the Commission for such a legacy project in impact and relevance to the people, assuring of their readiness to safeguard it and use it for the purpose behind its execution.
In a vote of thanks to the Commission, the Member representing Ijaw ethnic nationality on the Board, Dr. Paul Bebenimibo expressed gratitude to the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Bashorun Askia Ogieh and his dynamic team for the project and for seeing to its completion in tasteful delivery, as well as physically coming to officially inaugurate the project.
The doctor’s and nurses’ quarters is one of several people-driven projects executed by the Commission in the island community. It is a fully furnished two-bedroom detached bungalow with all modern appurtenances intended to encourage medical personnel to live and bond with the people in the area, while discharging their duties.
Having commissioned the project, the Chief Executive, Bashorun Askia formally signed and handed over the title to the project to the community representative in the presence of the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Ogbe-Ijoh Area Division, Warri South West LGA., SP. Kabiru Sani.
As the inspection of ongoing projects by the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) continues, the Managing Director/CEO,, Bashorun Askia Ogieh has expressed satisfaction with the projects,
The Management Team of the Commission, led by Bashorun Askia Ogieh, inspected ongoing projects by the Commission, in Ethiope West, Okpe and Ughelli North LGAs respectively.
The team first visited Jesse community, where a massive project of twin road construction, (Ujomi Road and Water Board Road) of about three kilometers was ongoing.
The Managing Director/ CEO, DESOPADEC, Bashorun Askia stated that the inspection was being carried out, to ascertain the level of work done by the contractor in Jesse, but from what was on ground, he would say that the contractor has done a very good job.
In the same vein, the Executive Director, Finance & Administration, Chief Barr. John Obukowho Nani said the Water Board road was chosen because it links Jesse town directly to Mosogar and further revealed that the contractor came to site about two months ago and has been able to do a massive job within the time frame.
In his words, “You can see the joy of the people, because this place used to be a swampy area but now that the road is being constructed, the people are very happy. Those residing in this area can now access their residences freely and it is a good thing.’’
Also speaking, the Executive Director, Projects Hon. Daniel Mayuku expressed his satisfaction over the jobs done in a short period of time, as he was expecting to see a contractor that was about to start his job, because the site was handed over to him in a short while, but was surprised at the level of work done so far. He however said that the only challenge that might disrupt the road construction was the rain, since they were working in the rainy season.
A notable Chief in the community, Chief Joseph Ovoro expressed the joy of the people, stating that it was very wonderful that these developments were taking place in Jesse town. He thanked the state Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa and DESOPADEC, for the economic importance of the road to them.
The inspection train then moved to Osubi. At the inspection of the Famous Oborevweri Road at Osubi, the MD expressed his excitement at the level of work done.
In his words, “This project has just been awarded a couple of months back in the life of this our tenure and we were actually coming here to see the work on site, but we were pleasantly surprised that on getting to this place, the job had been delivered. I must commend the speed with which the contractor has done the job particularly of the quality we are witnessing on site.”
One of the landlords on the road, Mr. Emuratu Oke expressed delight at the swift intervention of the Commission, under the able leadership of his Excellency, Governor Okowa. He particularly gave plaudits to DESOPADEC and the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly for attracting such massive development to the area.
Finally, at the Urhobo Progressive Union, UPU House, the contractor, Mr. Oboroh Kessiena disclosed that the contract, a magnificent socio-cultural edifice of the Urhobo ethnic nationality situated at Uvwiamughe, Agbarho in Ughelli North LGA was being done in phases including interlocking, landscaping as well as the conceptual erection of buildings for each of the 24 kingdoms that make up the entire Urhobo nation.
He said that the present phase they were working on is that of interlocking. On that, he gave assurance that in the next two months the job should be delivered.
The Executive Director, Finance and Administration, Chief John Nani, stated that the purpose of the inspection of the legacy project, especially the landscaping aspect, was to ensure that all efforts, material and otherwise were mustered, to see to its early completion and delivery, because it is a veritable avenue for the entire Urhobo nation to interface and celebrate their cultural heritage. He added that no stone would be left unturned to ensure that only the best was achieved.
It will be recalled that sometime last year, His Excellency, the Governor of Delta State, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, when he visited the building during the celebration of the annual Urhobo Day, had assured the Urhobo nation of a timely and quality completion of the landscaping of the UPU Unity House, as a pride to the nation and as a signature intervention by DESOPADEC.
In his contribution, the Executive Director, Projects, Hon. Daniel Mayuku disclosed that the landscaping project was dear to the Commission, hence the need to engage one of the staff on ground to monitor the day to day execution in line with the new policy of the Board.
Capping up the observations, the Chief Executive Officer, Bashorun Askia Ogieh expressed satisfaction at the level, quality and time-bound nature of the job. He stated that the landscaping of the compound when completed, would certainly alter the aesthetic integrity of the environment, adding that against all odds, the Commission was making its impact. He expressed hope that in the nearest possible time, the project would become a reality.
Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, Bashorun Askia Ogieh, along with the Chairman of the Board, Evangelist Michael Diden, paid a condolence visit to the family of late Catherine Ilolo, a PDP stalwart, at Oleh, Isoko South LGA, Wednesday.
From left, Bashorun Askia Ogieh, the widower, Reverend Paul Akporube Ilolo and Evangelist Michael Diden, during the visit.
Hon. (Mrs.) Catherine Ilolo was President-General of Ehweya Isoko Association of Nigeria until her untimely passing on June 23.
The former lawmaker at the Delta State House of Assembly who represented Isoko South Constituency 1 in 1991 was also a two-time member of the Local Government Service Commission in the state.
In its avowed commitment to put smiles on the faces of the people of the Mandate Areas, the Management Team of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), yesterday, embarked on inspection of ongoing projects in Isoko and Ndokwa Nations, respectively.
Led by the Managing Director/ CEO, Bashorun Askia Ogieh, the Team visited the Uzere/Asaba-ase/Obare Rd, Uzere Modern Market Lock up Stores/Park and Ofagbe-Ibrede Rd.
At the Uzere/Asaba-ase/Obare Rd, the Managing Director and his team were highly elated at the speed and pace of job so far done on the project.
According to him, “We are here to access the level of work that has been done on the road. So far, the contractor has done very well, given the limited time space. At a point, we were actually afraid if the road can be ready and put to use. But by what we are seeing today, the contractor has done a very good job and it is quite solid.” He said he was particularly happy for the road, because it is the only access to Asaba-ase, in Ndokwa East LGA and Obare in Patani LGA, respectively.
In his words, “This road is a Federal road which has been abandoned and we have to come to their rescue because it is in our mandate area. Although, the construction is quite expensive, we cannot abandon our people like that, which is why we are doing the road as a form of palliative for the people known majorly for producing agricultural products.”
Speaking with DESOPADEC News, the Executive Director, Project (EDP), Hon Daniel Mayuku said the conception of the 5 km road project was borne out of the fact that there has been recurring flooding problem on the road over the years, noting that DESOPADEC being an interventionist agency decided to come to the rescue, in order to stop the suffering of the people, by creating two massive culverts, to enable the water to flow, since Uzere and its environs were known for flooding every year.
Asked if the massiveness of the road project would not affect other projects of the Commission, the EDP said, “The project is massive alright but it will not affect other projects, because we planned for it and it is within our power.”
On his part, the Executive Director, Social Services (EDSS), Barr Leonard Anoka expressed happiness as he said that this project would bring about so many socio-economic activities as it was a major road to access and connect the three ethnic nationalities of Isoko, Ijaw and Ndokwa. “If you take Asaba-ase for instance, this is the only road they have because they are surrounded by rivers and they are the biggest in fish farming activities,” he concluded.
Contributing also, the Member representing Ijaw Nation on the Board of DESOPADEC, Dr. Paul Bebenimibo who oversees Obare Community, under his constituency, said that the road was fundamental for the people’s transportation of their goods, as they were basically farmers and fishermen, adding that it was a good palliative that DESOPADEC has decided to give to the people as an interventionist agency. He promised to sensitize the people to cooperate with the government and DESOPADEC in maintaining the road, rather than causing any damage to the construction and will encourage them to keep watch over it, so that no damage would be done to it.
At the Uzere Modern Market, under construction, the Executive Director, Project (EDP), Hon Daniel Mayuku was full of praise for the Contractor, for doing a wonderful job, noting that he was the kind of contractor that would be required, as they to take their time to do their jobs.
According to him, “Uzere is a big town and the value of the Market and Park cannot be over-emphasized. The Market has 102 Lock-up stores, and when the market is in operation, a park will be needed because people who come with their goods and cars would need a place to park. Although, it is an old market, we have decided to upgrade it so that the people of the area would know that the oil they are producing is coming back to them in terms of development.”
During the Team’s inspection visit to Ofagbe-Ibrede Rd, the Managing Director/CEO, Bashorun Askia Ogieh was highly elated and effusive in praising the contractor, for a job well done.
“I am highly impressed by the level of job done on the road, having been present from the very beginning. The contractor has done very well and it is within the time frame,” he commended.
He particularly noted that upon completion, the road would link the Isoko people of North and South to Ibrede and the other communities here in Ndokwa East.”
According to him, “It is a major link road that will shorten the journey of our Isoko people instead of going round the journey of Ashaka and Kwale and all of that, they just link up in Ibrede this way. The whole of Ibrede down are the Isoko speaking areas of Ndokwa East and they have been clamoring for a road to link them with their brothers and sisters of Isoko North and South LGAs. It is a very good road and would help to transport agric products closer to this side. It is a major demand of the Isoko ethnic nationality and a very major demand of the people of the Ndokwa nation. I am therefore, very happy seeing it as it is now and at completion, the administration of His Excellency, Senator Dr, Ifeanyi Okowa would have done so well.”
Reacting, the representative of the contracting company, GMG Global Construction, Mr. Fadi Mahfouz expressed appreciation to DESOPADEC Management for giving him and his company the opportunity to execute the project, adding that they would complete it in good time for the benefit of the people.
The Executive Director, Project, Hon Daniel Mayuku, while reacting to a question by DESOPADEC News, said that he was happy to see the reality of the completion of the road which was estimated to be about 4km . “First and foremost, this road is a virgin forest. The first time we came here, it was all forest but today you can see the miracle money and signs the whole place is opened up. The good thing about the ground, is the pure sharp sand, so it is going to be a road that would last for a very long time. We also make sure that we have six culverts to enable free water flow, so that it would not disrupt the road due to the fact that the road is being constructed in water log area.”
On his part, the Executive Director, Social Services (EDSS), Barr, Leonard Anoka said, finally, “Ibrede Community is the only community close to Aboh, which is the Headquarters of Ndokwa East LGA. Before now, to access the other side of the road if you are going to Oleh or Ozoro, you have to pass through Ashaka, Ushie and Kwale, which is a very long distance. But with this new road, you can access the community at a short distance and the stress of going round is cut off. The people will also be happy because as you can see, the contractor is doing a perfect job.”
-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) – By Austen AKHAGBEME:
Amidst the political fireworks, permutations and calculations, Pastor Ize- Iyamu came in handy as the much taunted bride.
Paradoxically, his suitors were his nemesis in an earlier daring and keenly contestation that broke his back badly. But like the typical Nigerian politician, he held on to the pieces of what remained of his tattered arsenal, regrouped and recalibrate.
Those who fought with him knew how fortified and nearly impregnable his structures were. So when they needed something similar with what he had, they simply went for the emperor himself and his fortress.
But that’s how the game is played; the game of politics, that is. Your enemy today can be your good friend tomorrow. And your alter- ego today can become your albatross tomorrow. Ize Iyamu has tasted it all: the intrigues, the joy of a near win and the bad taste of defeat.
Those who knew him attest to the fact that he’s a grassroot mobilizer, one that is loved by the common man on the street. His victory over other tested candidates and colleagues speaks volume of a man that has become accepted and acceptable by those who loves him and those who do not.
Ize Iyamu has always had his eyes on the ball, waiting with bated breath for a snap of an opportunity to mount the saddle. So when opportunity came, regardless of where it came from, it met with preparedness. Which is why he took it hook, line and sinker.
The coast seems clearer from one divide for Ize- Iyamu but the true battle lies ahead. For him, the story of Edo politics is the story of the known and the familiar. As he gradually lubricates his structures and contacts, backed with the almighty political good will from Abuja, efforts should be deliberately made to limit campaigns and sloganeering to cardinal development paradigms. And not personality attacks and pedestrian gimmicking often associated with politicians who have nothing to offer to the people.
To whom much is given, so much is expected. If you must earn the people’s mandate, you must dwell on what benefits the people and heals their wound. The emergence of Ize- Iyamu no doubt has added to the already spiced political environment providing for the people, a variety to choose from. And this must not be jettisoned or slaughtered on the altar of violence and lawlessness. Edo state belongs to us all. Congratulations, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

Our attention is drawn to an article titled ‘Delta 2023: David Edevbie Nightmare begins with elder brother journey to prison, purportedly authored by one Barr Godwin Onoriode. Based on the contents of the presentation, it would seem that the writer proffered useful advice that could benefit the Urhobo cause for 2023. However, based on the way the article was syndicated to various press houses, it was not difficult to detect the source and the true identity of the writer has been easily unmasked.
While we appreciate the writer and political interest he represents for seemingly acknowledging the well-known truth that Olorogun David Edevbie is the “potential” governor of Delta State comes 2023, we would like to correct the wrong impression that he (David) will be imposed on Deltans. May we remind the writer that Olorogun David Edevbie was the choice political ambassador of the Urhobo people in 2014 when the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) endorsed him. We all know who the other contestants were at the time. We, therefore, see no reason why the writer chose to drag Chief James Ibori name into his discourse and accuse the revered politician of having sworn to impose David Edevbie as governor of Delta State come 2023 “by hook or crook”.
That was clearly a feeble attempt to vilify the political prowess and leadership charisma of Ibori that is accepted and respected by the political class of Delta State as a national leader. No politician in Delta State would toe the line of such insults, including the Deputy President of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege. So, what was the writer’s motive?
It is evident that the writer, out of a devious intent to smear the reputation of Olorogun David Edevbie deliberately skidded on to the path of propaganda in an attempt to titillate and manipulate the public trust, confidence and respect for the Edevbie family. The writer did so by referring to June 8, 2020, Federal High Court, Lagos Order of interim forfeiture of the sum of N827,679,098 from an account purportedly belonging to Engineer Matthew Edevbie, a contractor with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), as the nemesis of Olorogun David Edevbie ahead of 2023 governorship election.
The writer’s comments are wholly prejudicial, knowing full well that the matter is due for hearing on June 29. It is a well-established principle that an accused has the right to defend himself. The writer also went ahead to insinuate that Engineer Matthew Edevbie would be sent to jail and the writer and his political paymaster noted that Edevbie’s ‘”opponent” would feast on the “ordeal” to further manipulate the people not to vote Olorogun David Edevbie which the writer sees as the biggest river David will be crossing ahead of 2023.
It is good that the writer acknowledged that he had little or no knowledge of the nexus between David and Matthew and such ignorance should have guided him in keeping mute over matters that were not of his concern rather than playing to the gallery in an attempt to mislead the public.
For the writer’s information, Matthew Edevbie is David’s uncle and is a businessman of international repute, a seasoned Engineer with over 30 years in various aspects of electrical engineering concept, design, procurement, construction, operations management, maintenance and consulting. A Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), member of the Nigeria Institute of Management Consultants, registered member of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), The Nigeria Environmental Society and active member of Enterprise Development Services (EDS) of the Lagos Business School.
Matthew Edevbie is the Chief Executive Officer/MD of Income Electrix Limited, with offices in Port Harcourt and other cities across Nigeria and West Africa. He is also the MD of 4Power Construction Limited among other companies and a major stakeholder in PortHarcourt Electricity Distribution Company, PHEDC. He is an active contractor with the NDDC.
How could the writer say that a man of such local and international stature and who has a voice in deciding the economic dial of Nigeria is “very slow to act” and hence, the June 8, Lagos High Court Order brouhaha?
It is on record that recently, Income Electrix got a contract from the NDDC to power some communities in Rivers State. According to the MD of NDDC, Prof Nelson Brambaifa, the contract is an ongoing pilot project listing Ubiama, Isiokpo and several communities in Ikwere LGA as beneficiaries. The project is near completion with the installation of eight transformers in Ubiama and the communities will receive electricity supply from two electric substations in Ahoada and Rumuosi. Eze Blessing Wagor, Chairman of Supreme Council of Ikwere traditional rulers praised NDDC for the restoration of electricity to the communities after several years of blackout while the NDDC was proud of its contractor, Income Electrix headed by Matthew Edevbie.
Does the writer now see the folly behind his self- made fear that if Olorogun David Edevbie is elected governor of Delta State, he would use the State’s funds to service his “brother’s” (Matthew) company? That is a misguided assumption that can only have emerged from a poorly schooled mind. Matthew is already a well-established businessman. The writers’ weak attempts to link Engineer Matthew’s current business travails to his nephew’s so-called governorship ambition is mischievous, to say the least. Challenges are normal in life and must be tackled when such, as the writer presented, arise as we expect Matthew to do on 29th June 2020.
Meanwhile, let me assure the writer that Olorogun David Edevbie’s road to becoming the governor of Delta State come 2023, if he chooses to run, is “within reach”, and there is no Achilles’heel to conquer on the path of success and ultimate victory for the PDP, Delta State and the Urhobo people in general.
Borno State Government said about N132 million is expended monthly on members of Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), hunters and vigilantes from the local government fund to secure the state from Boko Haram.

Before the coming of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umara, most social infrastructure at the local government areas were destroyed and vandalized by insurgents. The infrastructures were renovated by the State Government, hence the ministry was mandated to upgrade and furnish the two palaces with a view to return them back to their palaces.”
Mai-Mele also revealed that N270 million has been spent on 60,000 bags of fertilizers which are to be distributed to farmers in the state.
He added that an approval for the allocation of 134 units of farm tractors to the local government areas was granted by the governor.
–Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –From Mike SOGBOLA (North-East Bureau Editor):

In keeping with the promise of the MD/CEO of the Commission, Bashorun Askia Ogieh and in line with the decision of the current Board, that staff promotion will be an annual occurrence, DESOPADEC today started issuing promotion letters to staff who were successful at the 2019 promotion interview exercise.
Speaking with some of the staff that received their promotion letters today, they mostly expressed delight at receiving their letters, many of whom expressed pleasant surprise at the event taking place now, a time when the entire nation is faced with an economic downturn, due to the COVID19 pandemic.
One of the successful staff that received their promotion letters, Mrs Tosan Okorodudu of the Community Development and Public Enlightenment Department, was effusive in expressing her thanks to the MD/CEO, Bashorun Askia Ogieh, and the Board, for keeping their word that the promotion exercise would be a regular annual event.
Also speaking on behalf of the Director of Administration and Supplies, Pastor Ferdinand Ebiboh, on the ongoing exercise, Mr. Samuel Ejogbamu, a Deputy Director in the Administration and Supplies Department (Head of Welfare), explained that the promotion interview and screening exercise was thorough and that the process took into cognizance the attendance, recommendations by Heads/Supervisors, performance of staff during the interview, professional prerequisites and discipline, amongst other considerations.
According to Mr. Ejogbamu, “You may have scored high during the interview, but if you had fallen short in keeping with the laws/code of conduct of the Commission, or you do not meet the minimum criteria for your profession, you may not be qualified for promotion.” He further explained that although, the promotion exercise cuts across all the ethnic groups and was very thorough, especially as Board members from all the ethnic nationality were involved in the process, he was thankful to the MD/CEO, Bashorun Askia Ogieh and the entire Board members for their support and for considering them worthy to function in the promotion committee.
Mr. Ejogbamu while encouraging other staff that have not yet been promoted to be hopeful, as the MD/CEO and his Executive Management team have put a structure in place to ensure that promotion takes place twice every year, as is customary in the public service, also admonished staff to disabuse their minds of the idea of a blanket promotion, as it happened in the IMC days. He stated that it was an aberration and therefore cannot be obtainable anywhere in the Public Service.
The exercise, which commenced today at the Commission’s Head Office, continues tomorrow and afterwards.
The world, as it does every June 19, today pauses to mark the 2020 World Sickle Cell Day, with the aim of shining light on the sickle cell disorder.
In this regard, wife of the Delta State Governor and Founder, O5 Initiative, Dame Edith Okowa in her message of hope to the warriors said, “Sickle Cell Disorder is not a death sentence; God still has a valid plan for your life and you should not give up”.
Dame Okowa also called on every well-meaning member of the society to shun all form of discrimination against sickle cell patients and rather lend a helping hand in seeing that the sufferings of the carriers are alleviated.
In her words, “Do not be the reason any of these ones is discouraged, give hope and love to them, make them see a reason to live life to the fullest even in spite of the pains they go through.
“If we are able to sow love into the lives of these ones just as God has loved us unconditionally, then we would all be keying into the vision of the O5 Initiative of ‘changing our world, one person at a time’”, she said.
Dame Okowa while addressing pressmen in her office at the Government House, Asaba explained the reason for her continuous campaign on genotype awareness and call for positive action regarding Sickle Cell warriors.
“I have known the pains of caring for a carrier as a parent. I also know the unexplainable pain the children have to go through almost on a daily basis for no fault of theirs and I do not wish to see any parent or child to go through the same pain.
“This is why I continually advise intending couples to be aware of their genotype status before walking down the aisle because no child deserves the pains of sickle cell anemia”, she explained.
Dame Okowa, in furtherance of her crusade, through her pet project, the O5 Initiative has in less than four years, established 13 sickle cell clinics across hospitals in the state with a referral centre in the Asaba Specialist Hospital.
She established that as much as the grace is given, the goal of her Initiative was to have sickle cell clinics in all the 25 local government areas of Delta State and she promised to work assiduously in that regard.
Earlier in the day, the First Lady had played host to a number of resident doctors on an enlightenment programme on significant issues regarding sickle cell disorder. In the light of the prevailing covid19 pandemic, the medical practitioners noted that sickle cell patients could be more susceptible to the virus than others.
According to Dr. Kennedy Emeagui, a consultant on orthopedic surgery, at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, “Patients of Sickle Cell Disorder are more susceptible to the Coronavirus because their immune systems have been compromised, making it quite difficult for them to resist diseases.
In the same vein, a consultant pediatrician, Dr. Hyginus Okpara pointed out that a major challenge currently being faced by sickle cell patients has to do with their possible inability to get blood transfusions as at when due.
“Because of the general health situation we are currently facing, blood donors have become scarcer and this is a major challenge to the sickle cell patients who thus may not be able to access blood when they need it”, he pointed out.
Dr. Uche Okwe, a Public Health Physician encouraged the patients to observe the general rules of regular hand washing, social distancing, use of face masks, and regular use of hand sanitizers to ensure that they are not infected.
Dr. Charles Origbo who is a consultant hematologist, noted that while managing patients, health personnel should pay attention to the blood level of patients to check for possible sudden drop in blood level, which he said could pose a serious challenge.
That Edo State has gradually become a Political ” War zone “, full of intrigues, subterfuge, Confusion and desperation is a known fact. No thanks to the desperate combatants from both divide, championed by their benefactors, sponsors and drummers.
These are difficult and unpredictable days for the two warring interests; moments monumental indeed. A once spicy and sweetened political relationship has become spiky, sour and uncompromisingly bitter.
The bile and negative energy with which “the war” is being prosecuted fall short of anything left in a world of truce, love and possible reconciliation in a very near but bleak future.
So where do we go from here? Where are the Victims and who are the Victors? Whose interest does this brouhaha serves and to whose immediate advantage is it, after all is lost and won?
As passionate as one may want to align with either of these despicably troubling and trembling blocs, caution need to be exercised for the benefit of the general good and sanity of us all.
Edo state is far bigger, higher, more important than these present selfish and primordial tendencies threatening to tear it apart. Let us apply the breaks and put on ,one more time, our thinking cap.
What is cooking in Edo may not turn out sweet and pleasant. The very reason why every indigene and stakeholder must defile the Sound of Silence and speak out against this siege of our dear state, by those in search of political vendetta, prebendalism and pecuniary gains.
Evil prevails when good men say or do nothing. With this potentially violent whirlwind hovering over our state, the ominous signs are clear. And until and unless we allow good reason to prevail over egoistic desires, our state will remain in underdevelopment for a long time to come. Let the political gladiators and their brash supporters trend softly. Let them sheath their swords and play politics with issues and not with Personalities.

-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) – From Mike SOGBOLA (North-East Bureau Editor):
The Managing Director, Chàd Basin Development Authority (CBDA), Engr. Abba Garba has lamented that Boko Haram insurgency in the Northeast displaced no fewer than 10,000 farmers within the Chad Basin.
Garba who spoke to journalists on Wednesday in Maiduguri, further decried that the terrorists also destroyed farming equipment and infrastructures worth billions of naira belonging to CBDA during their siege on the Chad Basin.
He said the CBDA remains the largest casualty of Boko Haram in the country, with its projects in Marte, Ngala and other parts of the North East completely grounded and equipments totally vandalized.
Garba, who spoke on the planned return of the CBDA to the vandalized and subsequently abandoned projects in the Chad Basin towards enhancing food security in the Northeast region and the country in general, lamented that most of the registered farmers that were displaced in 2014 when the terrorists struck their project sites are living as internally displaced persons (IDPs) across the various camps in Maiduguri.
He commended the interest of Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum to reviving the farming sector in the state, noting the governor was recently in Marte, one of their project sites where he promised to assist in reviving the projects .
He said: “In Collaboration with us , he (Borno State Governor) has already started rehabilitating the burnt down houses with a view to relocating the farmers out of the IDPs camps to the farming sites in New Marte .
“In New Marte we had about 4000 registered farmers while in Ngala , which is another project site in the Basin, we had about 1500 registered farmers who were all displaced by the insurgency.”
He regretted that at present of the 90 percent Borno residents who are farmers, 40 to 50 percent of them are living in IDPs camps, depending on NGOs and governments to feed daily.
He said with the relative peace in the state and massive rehabilitation of structures and replacement of equipment destroyed by the terrorists, food and economic life of the Northeast region would soon be revived.
He said the staff need not be afraid of their security, noting that most of the areas such as Marte and Ngala have adequate security presence, with troops on ground regularly.
The bond of brotherhood in Africa is very tight and unique that distant cousins can even compete for attention with your own children and siblings. That is why it is very common when an African introduces someone as a brother to a European, the question that follows is: Are you of the same parents? In Africa, there is little or no distinction between nuclear and extended families. In times of sadness as in death or times of happiness as in marriage, the glue of African relationship is simply legendary and could confound outsiders. That is why I am very happy with my president, Muhammmadu Buhari that a lot of his cousins, nephews and nieces are staying with him in Aso Rock. This should be a message to our political leaders and wealthy Africans on the need to sustain the much cherished African brotherhood and sisterhood.
However, the news that gained currency very much of last week seems to be a stab of ingratitude and it gnaws the very foundation my being and faith in African brotherhood. That there was altercation between the First Lady, Aisha Buhari and a cousin of Buhari, Sabiu Yusuf that led to shooting by some of the security aides guarding them. According to media reports, the First Lady was very incensed by the alleged refusal of Sabiu Yusuf to go into self-isolation after coming from Lagos and the reported contact with someone who died of the dreaded coronavirus disease.
The presidency has not denied the story and the news is that Inspector General of Police is already conducting investigation into the shooting in Aso Rock, the very sanctuary of our democracy and where the president resides. It should be concern to all Nigerians especially those that wish well the run of our democratic ethos.
Mallam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President said that our elected leader was not in any danger during the shooting. He also stated that the president has ordered investigation into the incident. Listen to part of Shehus statement on the matter :The presidency wishes to acknowledge concerns expressed by several members of public regarding the recent incident among the occupants of the State House which escalation led to the arrest of some staff by the police. This is to assure all and everyone that the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Muhammmadu Buhari is not and was not at any time in any form of danger either from deadly infection or the reported incidents by security personnel which is currently under investigation. This particular incident happened outside the main residence of the President………. In this particular instance, the President says the law should be allowed to take its course`.
The whole unfortunate incident raised two critical issues – the security of the president and the imminent threat from COVID 19. I am highly disturbed that those who are assigned to guard the president and members of his family should be engaged in public brawl to the extent of firing shots. This is dangerous and those found culpable should be made to face to the law. Agreed that the mouthpiece of the president disclosed of his principal resolve to enforce the full weight of the law, those in charge should be up and doing and no stone should be left unturned to serve as deterrent to others.
Secondly is the issue of coronavirus. Is it true that the said cousin of the president had a contact with someone who recently died of COVID 19? If that is true, the man should self-isolate for 14 days and go for testing. We cannot toy with the health of our president and those of his immediate family. President Muhammadu Buhari may be father, husband or uncle to some people. But what must be stressed here is that Muhammadu Buhari is the president of the country and by implication, the father of all Nigerians. My concern is about the health and political development of the country and blood relationship by any stretch of imagination should not take precedence over the more serious issue of governance. The fates of millions of Nigerians are involved.
I therefore appeal to all those in charge of the security of the president and the family to be aware of the enormous responsibilities placed on their shoulders. True that in African tradition, distant relations can compete for space and attention with immediate family members. Those enjoying such privileges should know that there is limit to the man`s affections. It is my supplication that those enjoying the fraternal relationship with President Muhammmadu should not abuse the privilege. In other words, they should not cross the red line. The way and manner the investigation into the shooting is carried out shall define the character and tenor of the Buhari presidency.
He came in the midst of storms even though the electoral victory was phenomenal. The challenges on ground were so many; the heat generated could melt a warship. The State’s debt profile was so intimidating that a less endowed leader could give up easily. To screw up matters the more, allocation from Abuja in the face of a crippling recession was less than half of what was required to pay salaries and wages of civil servants.
With bated breath, Deltans waited. The waiting was not long as the Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, was unperturbed as he put his hands to the plough. In spite of the grim situation he faced, he was bent on empowering youths of the State to build a solid foundation for a strong economy through the SMART agenda.
Youths were recruited and trained in various trades of their choices. It was an experiment that worked. His interest in growing the future of Delta State through the youths is phenomenal. Some 20,334 youths were trained in various skills.
Many participated through the Skills Training and Entrepreneurship Programme (STEP) and the Youth Agricultural Entrepreneurs Programmed (YAGEP), and all is aimed at making the young boys and girls small-scale entrepreneurs – the Bulwark of the Asian Tigers – through starting small and growing big.
Granted that they need close monitoring, obviously in the next few years, there will be a ground swell of well-trained youths capable of holding their own in a competitive economic clime.
Direct job creation
Beyond this, is yet the direct job creation scheme where another set of over 6,000 unemployed youths have since set up businesses in Information and Communication Technology, catering, event management, beauty services, agricultural production and processing, food packaging, tiling, plumbing and electrical installation among others.
Sequel to a satisfactory independent evaluation of the successes recorded in the job creation scheme, the World Bank/European Union SEEFOR Project provided funding support for the 2017-2018 Cycle of the STEP and YAGEP scheme while Delta-born champion of entrepreneurship, Mr Tony Elumelu, through his Tony Elumelu Foundation, pledged financial support of N500m to support the STEP and YAGEP programmes. More than 100,000 direct and indirect private sector jobs were created through youth empowerment interventions and programmes in infrastructure development activities.
To ensure that trainees are well guided in their new-found business environment, the governor established a monitoring and mentoring agency for all job creation beneficiaries. The good news today is that some entrepreneurs raised by the programme, no fewer than 6,450 of them between 2015 and 2019, have become employers of labour while the multiplier effects on society speak volumes.
In appreciation of Okowa’s job creation strategy, the Orodje of Okpe, HRM General Felix Mujakperuo, Orhue I, had remarked that “the era of white collar jobs are gone, because they are very limited. We have seen a lot of them who were trained and empowered and have employed other persons. Some of them in fashion designing and tailoring are already exporting their products outside Nigeria. The Job Creation Scheme is a huge success”. “Yearly, people are graduating from the universities and the polytechnics and it will be a problem if these youths are not engaged,” he added.
To date, the Okowa’s administration has established additional 12 public primary and 34 secondary schools across the State to improve access to education in rural and difficult-to-reach terrains and decongest existing schools in urban areas. Delta State, with a total of 1,126 public primary schools, 466 secondary schools, six technical colleges and 10 vocational centres, has a total enrolment of 285,236 primary school pupils in the 2019-2020 session while secondary schools’ registration stood at 2741,151 and technical colleges, 4,979.
To improve the quality of infrastructure in public schools in the state, Okowa paid a total of N5.2 billion counterpart funds of the Universal Basic Education Fund for the years 2013-2017 and accessed marching grants of N5.2 billion, bringing total investments on public school infrastructure to N10.4 billion.
In all, a total of 5,667 classrooms were constructed and renovated through the joint efforts of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and Delta State Oil Producing Communities Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC). The administration has procured a total of 140,478 students’ furniture and 22,440 teachers’ furniture.
To improve security in the public schools, a total of 87 block wall fence were constructed, 81 science laboratory blocks were constructed and renovated and 30 solar-powered boreholes were also constructed to provide potable water and sanitation in the schools in line with Goal 6 of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
One other area the Okowa-led administration has strengthened its focus on the leaders of tomorrow is technical and vocational education. On assumption of office in 2015, the Governor sent a Bill to the House of Assembly for an enabling law to establish the Delta State Technical and Vocational Education Board (TVEB). He ensured full operationalisation of the fully rehabilitated six technical colleges and vocational education centres across the State.
With the success recorded by the huge investments in technical education, Okowa has assured Deltans of better days ahead as his administration intends to establish 19 more technical colleges in the state to ensure that every local government area has one. In fact, work has begun in the construction of nine colleges, out of the 19.
To improve capacity-building in the training and retraining of teachers in the State, the Okowa administration established the Teachers Professional Development Centre(TPDC), Owa-Oyibu, in Ika North East Local Government Area for the upgrade, re-tooling and training of teachers at all levels and at all times.
Under the auspices of TPDC, the government commenced training of 6,504 personnel of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Post Primary Education Board (PPEB), TVEB, SUBEB, N-Power and volunteer teachers at the community level and 100 French teachers across the State in 2016. The government also recruited 1,000 teachers to fill vacancies created by the retirement and death of some teachers, especially in core areas in science and technical education.
Physical infrastructure
Governor Okowa has completed the abandoned Specialist Hospital in Asaba and upgraded its physical infrastructure to enhance institutional capacity for service delivery. The government also launched the Contributory Health Insurance Scheme for all Deltans, and pays for the Under-five (5), pregnant women and the elderly in society.
Since the establishment of the Delta State Contributory Health Commission (DSCHC), with N7,000 annual payment by an enrollee, a total of 702,413 enrollees, comprising Formal Health Plan, 168,516; Informal Health Plan, 11,187 and Equity Health Plan, 522,710 and counting, have so far registered for the Contributory Health Insurance, and to encourage effective health coverage, the state government has completed rehabilitation of 63 Secondary Health Care facilities and 110 Primary Health Care facilities and the engagement of 52 standard Private Health Care providers for the scheme.
The strength of any leader can be measured in his ability to respond to emergencies such as the Coronavirus pandemic ravaging most countries of the world. Here in Delta State, Okowa was rated excellent by Thisday Newspapers for his professional response to the pandemic. He established holding and isolation centres and procured ventilators and other equipment needed for the management of COVID-19 patients even at a time when the virus was yet to be recorded in the State. In the report, Thisday said Delta had not been caught napping in the battle against Covid-19 as the State government took proactive steps to effectively contain the disease long before it recorded its index case.
“Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, a medical doctor, as one accustomed to instinctive response to even the most challenging of emergencies, had promptly set up a response team comprising State health ministry officials and the State coordinator of the NCDC, headed by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Mordi Ononye.
Six holding centres, which were later increased to 12, were promptly created across the State within 24 hours, after the Federal Government announced the first case in Nigeria involving an Italian in Lagos, in February. Four isolation centres were subsequently created at FMC Asaba, Central Hospital, Asaba, Central Hospital. Warri and DELSUTH, Oghara.
“Aside the state-of-the-art medical and communicable disease-control facilities and personal protection equipment, 20 ventilators were dedicated to the management centres. Various special duty allowances had also been announced for the medical and health workers,” the newspaper wrote.
Sports development under Governor Okowa has received a tremendous boost with the completion of the world Class Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba and the successful hosting of 52 countries for the African Senior Athletics Championships in Asaba, 2018. The state government also hosted the AITEO Cup Finals in conjunction with Nigeria Football Federation and got FIFA certification of Stephen Keshi Stadium as venue for international matches, which led to the successful hosting of the Cranes of Uganda in an international friendly with the Super Eagles.
The governor also revamped school sports in the state with the re-launching of the long-rested annual Principal’s Cup Football Competition for secondary schools now known as the Zenith Bank Delta Principal’s Cup; the annual Headmasters’ Cup. Football Competition for Primary Schools and the maiden edition of the School Sports Festival, which were held in May, 2019. Delta State’s dominance in sports in the country was again re-enacted with it coming tops in all three editions of the National Youth Games held in Ilorin, Kwara, in 2016, 2017 and 2018 as well taking first position in the 2018 National Sports Festival held in Abuja.
Governor Okowa was named the “2018 Vanguard Personality of the Year” for his diligent delivery of democratic gains, working to make Nigeria’s democracy better. He has provided good governance, rapid rural development, traders and youth empowerment, and has worked harmoniously with his deputy, Deacon Kingsley Burutu Otuaro, to ensure peace and harmony in oil-bearing communities, among the political class and critical support for security agencies, among others.
He has indeed, kept faith with his campaign promises to the people. In appreciation of Otuaro’s contributions to peace in the Niger Delta, he was conferred with the Niger Delta Peace Ambassador Award 2019 by the Daily Independent Newspapers Limited.
As the governor begins his sixth year at Dennis Osadebay House, Delta’s seat of power, it is safe to say that Okowa has redefined governance, taking sustainable development and prosperity for all Deltans beyond mere promises.
For him, the era of abandoned projects is over in Delta, because what we are witnessing is a regime of initiating and delivering every project started. It is skewed toward leaving behind, an enduring legacy.
The next three years promise to be the best years for Deltans as the governor has assured of a “Stronger Delta”. With faith in God and with the unity and peaceful co-existence of all Deltans, the State would have become a place worthy to be called an “Oil-Rich State” because with Okowa, Delta is truly in the hand of God!

United Nations has condemned Saturday’s attacked by terrorists group on parts of Borno State.
A statement by the Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr Edward Kallon, said the action of the group is vehemently condemned,
It said the violent attacks by non-state armed groups in Monguno and Nganzai local government areas yesterday (Saturday), in which many civilians were killed, including a four-year old girl. At least 37 other civilians were injured and a major humanitarian facility was damaged, stands condemned.
Kallon said: “I am deeply saddened by the news that many civilians, including an innocent child, lost their lives in these horrific attacks. My deepest condolences go to their family. Those who were injured are also in my thoughts and I wish them a speedy recovery.”
Kallon added that: “I am appalled by the continued violent attacks launched by non-state armed groups in civilian areas in Borno State.”
The statement said: “On 13 June, non-state armed group operatives aboard light trucks mounted with heavy artillery raided Goni Usmanti community in Nganzai LGA before penetrating the town of Monguno around 11.45 a.m. from two different entry points, resulting in clashes with the military which lasted for about two hours. The armed assailants reached the humanitarian hub, where over 50 aid workers were present at the time of the attack.
“Though the facility only sustained light damage, initial reports indicate it was directly targeted and an unexploded projectile was found at the gate. All UN and INGO vehicles in front of the humanitarian hub, which includes humanitarian offices and accommodation, were set ablaze. Protective security measures deployed at the hub prevented any harm to the staff inside.”
Kallon said. “I am relieved all staff are safe and secure, but I am shocked by the intensity of this attack. It is the latest of too many clashes affecting civilians, humanitarian actors and the assistance we provide,” stressing that: “Civilians and aid workers, their facilities and assets should never be a target and must be protected and respected at all times. I continue to call on all parties to respect and protect civilians and humanitarian personnel in accordance with international humanitarian law.”
The statement recalled that: “On 18 January, another humanitarian hub in the town of Ngala, near the border to Cameroon, was the target of a complex assault by non-state armed groups. An entire section of the facility was burned down as well as one of the few vehicles UN agencies rely on for the delivery of aid. Humanitarian hubs, managed by IOM for the humanitarian community, are critical to reaching the most vulnerable in insecure areas in Borno State. They enable aid workers to deliver assistance and carry out life-saving activities in remote locations amid challenging operational environments.”
It however lamented that: “Such incidents impede the ability for aid workers to stay and deliver assistance to the people most in need in these remote areas.”
It said 25 aid organisations are providing assistance to more than 150,000 internally displaced persons in the town of Monguno, in the north-eastern part of Borno State. The United Nations and NGO partners in Nigeria are working to bring urgent aid and curtail the spread of COVID-19 in the north-eastern states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe where 10.6 million people are in need of assistance.
The Global West Vessels Specialists Ltd, ( GWVSL) said on Sunday that it has never been involved in surveillance of oil facilities in the Niger Delta region, making it clear that it is not even interested in surveillance of oil facilities in the region.
In a Press Release, Management of Global West Vessel Specialists Ltd denied a publication by a group known as Central Youths of Escravos and Forcados that it once handled pipeline surveillance activities in the area
According to the Release; “The attention of the management of Global West Vessel Specialists Ltd has been drawn to a publication by a group known as Central Youths of Escravos and Forcados, that GWVSL had once handled pipeline surveillance activities in the area. The insinuation was contained in a petition to President Muhammadu Buhari as regards to the contractor handling the surveillance job in the area”.
“The group was obviously comparing the activities of GWVSL and the contractor, Ocean Marine Ltd and its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Capt. Hosa Okunbor.
For the avoidance of doubt and to set the records straight, Global West Vessels Specialists Ltd had never been involved in surveillance of oil facilities in the Niger Delta region. It is not even interested in surveillance of oil facilities in the region”, the release added.
According to the release also; “Global West Vessels Specialists Ltd only had a concessional agreement with the Nigerian Maritime and Safety Agency and Administration (NIMASA) to shore up its revenue base and nothing more”.
The GWVSL advised anyone raising allegation on surveillance of oil facilities in the Niger Delta region to do a thorough check before going to the public with falsehood, adding that; ” It is our believe that matters of this nature should be handled with care so as not to throw the region into chaos”.
“We wish to advise that whoever that is involved in this surveillance issue should apply restrain and tow the path of dialogue to amicably resolve the issue if there is any”, it stated.
The Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives has called on leaders at all levels as well as the Nigerian citizenry to cherish, respect and uphold the tenets of democracy, not only as a system of government but also as a way of life.
Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, in a solidarity message to Nigerians on June 12 celebration stressed that the practice of democracy demands, respect for rules at all levels, adherence to the dictates of the law, tolerance and mutual respect as well as upholding of principles of justice, equality and fairness in public and private settings.
Hon. Elumelu noted that “celebrating June 12 in honor of the late Chief MKO Abiola, winners of the free, fair and credible but annulled June 12, 1993 Presidential election, places a huge demand on the nation to take firm step to establish procedures that decisively guarantee free, fair and credible electoral process at all levels”.
According to Elumelu, “democracy is rooted and sustained by credible elections where all levels of electoral processes; from nomination of candidates, the ballot process and declaration of results, are only determined by the wishes and aspiration of the people as expressed in their unhindered participation at all the stages.
“June 12 affords our nation the opportunity to reflect on the huge sacrifices made by Chief MKO Abiola and other compatriots to establish democracy in Nigeria; which consciousness must guide our actions in governance.
“Our caucus therefore calls on all leaders at all levels of political engagement to be more selfless and redouble their committed to the demands of transparency, justice and fairness in all their dealings with Nigerians”
Elumelu also assured of the steadfastness of the Minority Caucus towards legislations and oversight activities geared to protect the rights of citizens and ensure good governance in the country.
The caucus congratulated Nigerians and prayed for unity, cohesion and peaceful co-existence in the country.
-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –From Mike SOGBOLA (Editor, Nort-East Bureau):
United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has commenced the distribution of radio sets to all internally displaced and other vulnerable children in Borno State.
This, according to the UN agency, would ensure that children from all backgrounds benefit from radio lessons being aired across the state to mitigate against the closure of schools over the COVID-19 pandemic.
UNICEF, which in order to strengthen the delivery of alternative learning to disadvantaged communities in the troubled state has commenced the distribution of radio sets to the most vulnerable children, said the distribution. Is going to be in phases.
Speaking on the distribution of the radio sets on Thursday in Maiduguri, UNICEF Education Manager in Borno, Dr. Nasser Kaddoura stated that the initiative, which targets 1,500 children in the initial stage, is an effort to leave no child behind.
He said, “For conflict- affected children, the COVID-19 pandemic is a crisis within a crisis. There is already a burgeoning number of out-of-school children in the north east region. UNICEF is actively supporting radio lessons in the state, but more children need to benefit from this arrangement. With support from Education Cannot Wait, we are providing radio sets to internally displaced and other vulnerable children who cannot ordinarily afford a radio set.
There is a high number of unaccompanied children, orphans and other minors who live in female-headed households in Borno. This initiative targets children in this category. Millions of children in North East Nigeria are out-of-school. This is counterproductive because education is a right of all children, no matter where they live.”
Also speaking on the distribution, the Chairman of the Borno State Universal Basic Education Board Committee on COVID-19 Education Response, (SUBEB) Ali Bukar-Dogo, commended UNICEF for the initiative. He added that SUBEB is monitoring the distribution and radio lessons and sensitizing communities on the purpose of the radio sets.
He said, “SUBEB is determined to see that distribution to the most vulnerable in the community as per target is achieved. We have engaged the School-based Management Committees in the state to select the most vulnerable households or communities. The radios will support the most vulnerable children and communities to catch up with learning programme even within the COVID-19 pandemic.’’

He described him as a quintessential gentleman, a consummate political chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, as well as a trusted colleague, whose counsel and inputs were highly resourceful until he breathed his last.
He made it clear that the present visit was a first-call, in flesh and blood, to truly confirm the veracity of the sad news, adding that the full Board would in no distant time, return to complete the condolence visit and be well seized on the next line of action, to do the needful, regarding his final departure rights.
The Director, Administration & Supplies, Pst. Ferdinand Ebiboh later prayed and asked the good Lord to grant the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
Responding on behalf of the Overah family, a sibling of the deceased, Mr. Raymond Overah thanked the MD/CEO, Bashorun Ogieh and his team from the Commission, for their prompt condolence visit. He said the Commission would be carried along in all the planning incidental to the funeral rites.
It will be recalled that the sudden, shocking and rude news of the demise of the Member representing Urhobo nationality on the Board of the Commission, Hon. Joyce Overah was broken on Tuesday June 9, 2020, at Sapele.
Until his death, Hon Joyce Overah represented Sapele, Okpe and Ethiope West Council Areas on the board of DESOPADEC.
–Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –From Mike SOGBOLA (North-East Bureau):
“Boko Haram terrorists pretended to us as Islamic religious crusaders, collected our arms and shot at both young and old, human and livestock at point blank”, the persons left unscathed told the Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum on Wednesday.
Narrating their ordeal, the survivors who had to engage help from neighboring village to bury 31 of the 81 corpses in a mass grave, told the governor that they left 81 persons dead, 13 injured and abducted seven others in the Tuesday’s attack on Fanduma Koloram, a village in Gubio local government area of Borno State.
The governor was equally told that apart from the hundreds of livestock that were killed in the attack, the terrorist carted away hundred others.
A resident, who claimed to be the sole survivor of the attack on the nomadic settlement, who narrated the ordeal of the people to the Governor, said he was assisted by people from neighbouring settlements to bury the dead.
He lamented that the insurgents disguised as if they had come to enlighten the community, disarmed the herders and shot all of them, including underaged and even their animals.
Fanduma koloram, a nomadic village, is located 35 kilometres in the north of Gubio, the headquarters of Gubio local Government area, and a journey that took the governor’s convoy an hour and half hour due to difficult terrain.
Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum on Wednesday morning travelled to Fanduma koloram village in Gubio local government area, scene of a deadly attack by Boko Haram.
The governor while sympathizing on the attack, was told by the survivor (which name is withheld for security reason) that 81 residents were killed during the attack on Tuesday with 13 persons injured and seven others, including village head was abducted.
The governor, who was apparently annoyed by the wicked act of the terrorists, urged the Nigerian military to undertake a final onslaught that should put an end to the insurgents in the shore of the lake Chad.
He also said there is urgent need to coalesce the scattered settlements into larger communities for security reasons.
The governor, while describing the attack as babaric and unfortunate, evacuated five injured persons in his convoy, for treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
He lamented that: “Last year, about same number of people were killed in Gajiram like it happened again. This is barbaric. It is very unfortunate. The only solution to end this masacare is by dislodging the insurgents in the shores of Lake Chad. Doing so will require collaborative regional efforts.”
A male adult, who was said to have been the only one who escaped the attack gave account during Zulum’s visit.
He said. “The insurgents in gun trucks and armored tanks, came around 10am yesterday (Tuesday). They operated for about six hours and left around 4pm. They gathered us and said they wanted to deliver religious sermon to us. They asked us to submit whatever arm we had. Some villagers gave up their dane guns, bow and arrows. The insurgents pretended as if they were there for no violence. Suddenly, they started shooting at will. Even children and women were not spared, many were shot at close range. Many started running. At the end, many persons were killed. I have been burying people since 10:00pm last night to about 6am this morning. We have buried 49 corpses here while another 32 corpses were taken away by families from the villages around us.
“The insurgents abducted seven persons including our village head. They went away with 400 cattle” he said.
It was however observed during the governor’s visit that the insurgents did not set the place ablaze as they often do in other attacks.
A resident from a neighboring village corroborated what Zulum was told by the survivor.
But there was however fears amongst residents of neighboring villages, that the casualties could be higher than 81 since tracing was ongoing.
Over two thousand five hundred livestock were said to have been seized by the insurgents.
The entire mix of his noble personage has distinguished him as a man of value. An ebullient young man; urbane and dashing; noble in character with a pleasantly large heart; bright, jovial, bouncy and lively, yet modest and reserved.
Hon. Ndudi Godwin Elumelu, who represents Aniocha-Oshimili Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, and currently the leader of the Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives, is not one who goes about flaunting his striking credentials as a seasoned, tested and go-getter politician, democrat and legislator per excellence.
On his 55th birthday last April 15, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State, in a glowing tribute described the lawmaker as “a courageous leader with sterling accomplishments.” He recalled that Elumelu’s contributions in the legislature, especially in the power sector probe of some years ago have remained remarkable.
He said of Ndudi Elumelu: “As a law maker, you have remained outstanding, and as a politician you are a leading light and a role model for upcoming politicians. As a government, we appreciate your contributions to the growth and development of our country, particularly your role in the development of the power and health sectors when you headed the committees of the House in those sectors from 2007-2010 and 2011 – 2015.
“We remain proud of your leadership role in the National Assembly, and we will continue to make supplications to God to grant you good health and greater years ahead,” Governor Okowa said.
Of course, the people of Aniocha-Oshimili Federal Constituency that he represents in the Green Chamber know him so well and acknowledge him as a man of the people; one who is passionate about the welfare of his constituents and Nigerians at large. He is zealous to provide good and purposeful representation and attract dividends of democracy for his constituents.
Indeed, it was his unparalleled track record scintillating representation for two terms in the past that spurred the people to call on him to return to the House of Representatives on their behalf.
Nothing better expressed the esteem in which the people held him. Chief Ikechukwu Okakwu, a Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Delta State once confirmed this, saying: “We the indigenes of Aniocha-Oshimili value Hon. Ndudi Elumelu’s representation.” Another Senior Special Assistant, Hon. Adim Elue concurred. “We know that he (Elumelu) will perform. He did it before,” Hon. Elue said.
Indubitably, Ndudi Elumelu did not disappoint as he threw himself into the campaign turf, contested and won the elections, thus returning to the green chambers after four years. But how has he fared in the first year of his return to the House of Representatives?
For one year in his third tenure as the representatives of the people of Aniocha Oshimili in the green chambers of the National Assembly, Hon. Elumelu has demonstrated good leadership; he has shown great concern not only to the people of his immediate constituency, but the people of Nigeria as a whole.
As the Minority leader of the House of Representatives, he brought his legislative experience and maturity to bear in the affairs of the House. His excellent human relations and respect for people could be the key for his achievement so far as the representatives of the people.

Assessing the performance of Hon. Ndudi Elumelu’s one year of representing the people of Aniocha/Oshimili, Chief Chibuzor Charles Uwaje, former Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Oshimili South, and grassroots politician said: “Ndudi Elumelu has done wonderfully well. When you say that somebody has done well, it means that the person has done what people expected from him.
“Let me start by telling you about a vibrant man whom I saw in the Chambers talking about the people that he represents. He is a man that has the empowerment of his people at heart. This can be attested to in his actions during the Covid-19 Lockdown in Delta State, where he showed great and passionate concern for the people that he represents. That alone gave me great joy and satisfaction when you are talking about his representation of his people in the period under review.
“The Aniocha/Oshimili people are very pleased with him. Under this period, he has done very well. He shared rice, beans, garri, money, even above all that, he went on to empower the people, paying salaries to a good number of persons in each of the wards in the Federal Constituency every month.
Chief Uwaje continued: “If we have been having people that have been doing this, the politicians and people would not have been complaining. By his performance, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu has made our work as politicians in Delta State as a whole very easy. He has made the work for PDP as a party in this State very easy for the next election.
“I am talking as an experienced politician, I have been into this party, I am a grassroots politician from the scratch to this level I am today. If senior politicians are behaving the way Hon. Ndudi is behaving, I don’t think our party will lose any election, because the dividend you give is what you will take. So Hon. Ndudi Elumelu has shown very good legacy that can carry the party into victory in the next election.
“They said that the end of every election is the beginning of another election; therefore he has done well for our great party, PDP in Delta State to the extent that his performance will surely bring about victory for our party in any election any day any time. His representation at the House of Representatives is a great plus for our people and for our great party, the PDP. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu has done well and I urge him to continue to do more for his people and for the party.
“In his second year,” Uwaje said, “I appeal to him not to relent in what he has been doing. He should do more of what he is known for. We are happy and grateful that we elected him as our representatives.”
Uwaje sees in Ndudi Elumelu, a politician that is accessible; a politician that doesn’t forget you after voting for him and winning his elections. He is a man with a lot of humility, a man with high respect and regard for leaders as well as the people in general.
“When you have respect for humans, you give them listening ears. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu is a man that gives people listening ears, a great servant of the people. He is humble and calculated,” Chief Uwaje said.
For Chief Felix Nduka Ogwuda, PDP chairman, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, Ndudi Elumelu’s representation of Aniocha/Oshimili has been worthwhile. Infact, he has done what his mates couldn’t do. He has no match in this area and the sky is his limit,” he said.
Chief Ogwuda further observed that this is the first time that constituents are paid stipends on a monthly basis, as nobody has done that before in Aniocha/Oshimili Federal constituency since the advent of representative democracy, “but that is what Hon. Elumelu is doing now. He has performed, and he has been performing even before now; he has no match at all and we are honestly praying for him so that he will continue to do the best for the people of Aniocha/Oshimili and Delta State in general.”
Still extolling the virtues of Hon. Elumelu, the Oshimili North PDP Chairman added: “He has so many projects lined up, that I am privileged to know. If not for the Covid-19, by now he would have kick-started them and we know him to be a representative of the people who does not promise and fail to fulfill his promise. That is the more reason people stacked out their heads for him. Anytime he calls, people respond. He is one of the best we have in Delta State and Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency in particular.”
While noting that farming is the mainstay of the people of Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency and urging Hon. Elumelu to ensure that farmers are well taken care of as he enters another year of representation, Chief Ogwuda appealed to the lawmaker to support them to improve and enhance their farming capacity and output in the coming farming season.
“However, let me specially thank him for the CBN Anchor Borrowers Programme that he introduced to our people. I am happy that they have started calling some people with a view to collecting the loan facility. It is a great plus to Hon. Ndudi Elumelu,” Ogwuda noted.
He charged Elumelu to keep doing what he is doing “and bring more development to our constituency. We know him to be intelligent, anything good and beneficial to our people that he sees in Abuja, he brings to us,” Ogwuda disclosed.
For the prominent leader in Aniocha/Oshimili, Chief Nkem Okwuofu, Chairman, Delta State Civil Service Commission, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu has done creditably well in the sense that in many ways he has touched the lives of many people within his constituency, including the fact that he appointed over 240 liaison officers that receive about N25,000 on monthly basis and they are very happy.
She said: “Within this period under review, Hon. Elumelu has provided and installed Solar lights for our people at Ogwashi-uku, he has been able to initiate two different types of CBN Loan facilities for our people for his Small and medium Entrepreneurial programme, ranging from N100,000 to N200,000 for the lower grade, and for the higher grade where you have N5million to N20 million.
“He also organized a comprehensive training on the programme for our people where forms were given. I am aware that background work is on for the disbursement of the fund. He has done well for the people within this period,” said the phenomenal leader, popularly addressed as Mother of Government (MOG).
Chief Okwuofu continued: “During the covid-19 lockdown not too long ago, he was one of the first to think strongly about the suffering and welfare of his people; how they are faring and he did not hesitate at all in sending palliatives worth over N45 million to his people within the Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency. Among the items were 150 bags of beans, 150 bags of rice, 120 cartons of tomatoes, 50 bags of onions, 75 cartons of groundnut oil, 75 bags of garri were give to each of the four local government areas in the constituency for distribution to the very vulnerable in the various communities.
“He has approval already for the construction of four palaces for four traditional rulers in the constituency. In many ways, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu has done superbly well and the people know it and are very happy”.
Pointing out that Elumelu’s local government area, Aniocha North has benefitted from his representation in so many ways, including a good number of roads rehabilitated for easy connection and accessibility among the various communities, Chief Okwuofu in answer to a question said:
“When you want the people to rejoice, you put somebody who will care for them on the throne and the people will rejoice. Definitely, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu is one of such and his people within his constituency are rejoicing. He has done very well.
“I pray for him and urge him to strive to ensure that he attends to such area he has not attended to; and I advice him to accomplish all his promises to his people, which he has already started doing.
“He has done well, but there is always room for improvement; he should never forget the background that he came from so that he will continue to have a focus on where he is going to. Let him carry all his people along in his journey to wherever God is leading him,” Chief Okwuofu said.
In his own assessment, a notable leader in Aniocha South Local Government area, Elder Ben Nwadiashe, former Chairman of PDP in the area, rated Hon. Ndudi Elumelu’s performance in his first year high, describing him as a true representative of his people.
“Hon. Elumelu is a down to earth man. When I say down to earth, I mean that he is highly gifted by way of leadership. He is calm and sees every situation like his own problem. He is everywhere and knows the problems confronting his people and he is always proffering solution to them.
“He behaves like the present Governor of our dear State, His Excellency, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, because he knows everybody and he is down to earth in dealing with them.
“He has done well and I must say that the people are happy with his representation; he has not in any way disappointed us. He is a man that loves and responds to the need of the downtrodden. He has saved situations here and all that he has been doing are obvious before the public. He is a leader, a God sent leader who has continued to use his gift to serve and uplift the people.
“I call on him to do more by way of touching the lives of the people because they are the ones that make up and give us the votes. He is a true representative of the people and he is always at peace with the grassroots, he is a grassroots man and I will want him to do more for them, let him not relent,” Elder Ben Nwadiashe enthused.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), Bashorun Askia Ogieh FCNA, CrFA,, has expressed shock and sadness over the death of one of the board members of the agency, Hon. Joyce Overah.
The late board member who represented the Urhobo ethnic nationality of Sapele, Ethiope West and Okpe Local Council Areas, died on Tuesday, June 9, 2020 after a brief illness.
“We’ve lost an articulate, passionate and forthright member of our board whose painful passage is hard to imagine. But we are consoled that he demonstrated his passion for his people in very practical ways that are enduring,” Bashorun Askia said.
Bashorun Askia described the death of Hon. Overah, a consummate politician and key stakeholder in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, as a blight on the seamless progressive trajectory of the Board since its inauguration about a year ago by the state Governor, Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa.
The DESOPADEC helmsman said the late Hon. Overah was a trusted and committed Board Member, whose inputs were pro-development for the mandate areas, describing his death as a sad development for all Board Members, management and staff of the Commission. Bashorun Askia prayed the good Lord to console the family, at this very difficult time.
The late Hon. Joyce Overah was a former federal lawmaker, having represented the Okpe, Sapele and Uvwie Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives between 2007 and 2011. He was also a Commissioner of Science and Technology as well as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in Delta State during the first tenure of Governor Okowa between 2015 and 2018.
Hon. Overah was among the members of the Board of DESOPADEC inaugurated nearly a year ago by Governor Okowa where he represented Urhobo ethnic nationality, covering Okpe, Sapele and Ethiope West Council Areas.
Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), Bashorun Askia Ogieh, FCNA, CrFA, has applauded His Excellency, Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa for initiating the process for the setting up a security outfit to protect lives, property and businesses in Delta State.
Bashorun Askia, who described the move as a bold, practical and people-oriented decision, said the announcement has been met with overwhelming endorsement by Deltans.
While congratulating the Governor for living up to his vow to lead from the front line, he urged the Delta State House of Assembly and all stakeholders charged with the task of midwifing Operation Delta Hawk to work assiduously towards it’s success.
According to him, “As a businessman, community leader, politician and now Managing Director of a special intervention agency to improve the livelihood of people in the oil producing areas in Delta State, I have had a long, deep and robust knowledge and encounter with the state of security not just in my state, but the entire country.”
He obsessed that “Security or lack of it is the major plank on which the development of any society is built and, over the years, our society, our country has been on a steady descent towards anarchy due to rising insecurity.
Commenting further, the DESOPADEC boss confirmed that “Days back, our governor, His Excellency, Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, initiated the process for the setting up a security outfit to protect lives, property and businesses in Delta State. The announcement has been met with overwhelming endorsement by the good people of and all residents in the state.
“For too long, our people have been hounded, harassed and killed by criminal elements, both home grown and immigrants, without adequate succour from the Police and other federally controlled security agencies. For a state that is in a hurry and with a concerted programme to develop, the high level of insecurity had become the most important cog in the wheel of progress.
“I wholeheartedly welcome our governor’s decision and join the teaming Deltans to applaud him on the bold, practical and people-oriented decision.
“Operation Delta Hawk is a project whose time has come. The gradual overrunning of our communities by criminal elements just has to be halted and reversed. Crime is local and the solution is, logically, local. The Federal Police is too thinly spread, too thinly manned and too detached to effectively secure all the states. Only Operation Delta Hawk has the capacity to tackle the security challenges in our communities.
“I urge the Delta State House of Assembly, all persons charged with the task of midwifing Operation Delta Hawk and all stakeholders to work assiduously towards rolling out Operation Delta Hawk. I congratulate the Governor for living up to his vow to lead from the front line, like a true and focussed general.”
