Oborevwori focused on devt of Delta – Ahon

The Chief Press Secretary, CPS, to the Governor of Delta State, Sir Festus Ahon, has acclaimed that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was fully focusing on the governance and development of the state.

The CPS stated this on Sunday, in Asaba while reacting to a report credited to one of the Executive Assistants, New Media, to the Governor, Mr Felix Ofou, in response to former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege’s recent diatribe on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori at an APC event in Oghara, Ethiope West Local Government Area of the state.

The CPS, in the statement, frowned that a personal article written by Mr Felix Ofou was being mischievously and deliberately misinterpreted by a section of the media, adding that, contrary to perception, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori had a harmonious working relationship with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Ahon said, “the Governor has constantly urged Deltans and other Nigerians to continue to give support to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu”, stressing that “if the President fails”, he, as a governor, would have failed, too.”

He said this was the same view Governor Oborevwori lucidly expressed at the Urhobo Progress Union, UPU event on Saturday 7th December, at which event, he said, inter alia, “I want to appeal to Urhobo nation today, I am saying it here, I am an Urhobo man and am Governor of Delta State.

“But I will tell you today whether you like it or not, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is supporting this administration. God has made him the President as God has made me the Governor of Delta State.

“So, as you are supporting me, support him because if he fails, I will fail, but by the grace of God, he will not fail and I will not fail, too.

“Mr President has appointed our sons and daughters into various positions. He did not appoint people from outside the state. God has given him victory and God has given me victory; you people should support us to succeed”.

Ahon added, “it is, therefore, imperative to state categorically that, as Chief Press Secretary and official spokesman of the Governor of Delta State, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori did not, and has never, expressed such views on Mr President’s economic policies.

“The general public is, therefore, advised to jettison such misleading reports as they do not reflect the views of the Governor who is working very hard to provide good governance for Deltans and other residents of the state, despite the present economic challenges faced by the citizens.”

Emmanuel O. Enebeli, ANIPR

Chairman, Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF)

The communique outlined the following resolutions:

Security is a Collective Responsibility

Security should not be solely left to security agencies. Every individual has a role to play in ensuring a safer society, fostering a communal effort to tackle insecurity effectively.

Empowering Traditional Rulers

Traditional rulers should be vested with more authority to secure their communities. Their intimate knowledge of the people and the terrain makes them more effective in addressing local security challenges compared to external security personnel.

Community-Driven Security Solutions

Communities must take proactive measures to address security issues within their jurisdictions. Local solutions are deemed the most effective, as most security challenges originate from within communities where people know one another.

Discouraging the Celebration of Questionable Wealth

Society, including individuals, religious organizations, and families, must desist from celebrating or glorifying individuals whose wealth sources are questionable.

Rejecting Untraceable Financial Gifts

Parents and religious groups must refuse financial gifts from individuals with untraceable sources of wealth. Instead, such acts should be publicly rebuked to set a moral precedent.

Promoting Equity, Justice, and Fairness

Government officials must exhibit fairness and justice in their dealings with all citizens, irrespective of social or economic status. Bias toward the wealthy at the expense of the less privileged must be eradicated.

Reforming Police Strategies

The Nigeria Police Force must adopt more flexible and community-centred approaches to security issues. The forum supported the implementation of community policing as a strategy to curb crime effectively at the grassroots level.

Economic Challenges Are No Excuse for Crime

Economic hardship should not serve as justification for engaging in criminal activities. The law remains unyielding in prosecuting offenders who hide under such excuses.

Incorporating Security Education into School Curricula

The school curriculum should be revised to introduce security education as a subject in both primary and secondary schools. This will equip young people with the knowledge to understand and address security challenges.

Vigilance Among POS Operators and Okada Riders

Point of Sale (POS) operators and commercial motorcycle (Okada) riders must remain vigilant to avoid being used by criminals for illicit activities and as tools for escape.

Communal Responsibility in Security Management

Citizens and communities must stop blaming the government entirely for security failures. Instead, they should devise practical strategies to improve their collective well-being and address security issues locally.

Traditional Rulers Must Uphold Integrity

Traditional rulers must avoid involvement in criminal activities. They should act as custodians of morality and security within their domains, refusing to aid or abet criminal elements.

Restoring Moral Values

There is an urgent need for a societal rebirth to restore lost moral values. This includes rejecting behaviors that debase individuals and communities, thereby fostering integrity and accountability.

Criminalizing Result Forgery by Parents

Parents who buy or forge examination results for their children should be regarded as criminals and face prosecution. Such actions undermine societal values and erode trust in educational institutions.

Revisiting Traditional Crime-Combating Methods

Age-long and culturally rooted methods of combating crime should be explored and integrated into modern security strategies.

Ending Politically Motivated Crime Support

Public officials must refrain from encouraging or supporting criminal activities at the grassroots level for political expediency. Such actions compromise the security and stability of local communities.

The communique reflects a commitment to fostering a secure and morally upright society through individual, communal, and institutional efforts. The DOPF remains steadfast in its role as a voice for societal transformation and accountability.

The Case for Anioma State: A Quest for Justice and Development

0

 *By Prince Fred Mordi*

The call for the creation of Anioma State resonates deeply with the aspirations of a people whose unique identity, rich history, and untapped potential have long been overshadowed. This quest is not just a demand for recognition; it is a pursuit of justice, self-determination, and equitable development.

Anioma, as a distinct ethnic group within Delta State, Nigeria, has consistently demonstrated its cultural vibrancy, economic contributions, and commitment to the state’s progress. Yet, decades of marginalization have left our region grappling with persistent underdevelopment—manifested in poor infrastructure, limited access to quality education and healthcare, and inadequate political representation. The creation of Anioma State is not only a solution to these challenges but also a long-overdue acknowledgment of our rightful place in the Nigerian federation.

 *Why Anioma State is Imperative*

 *1. Empowering Self-Determination*

Anioma State would provide its people the opportunity to chart their own course, ensuring governance that reflects their values, priorities, and aspirations. This self-governance would safeguard our cultural heritage, preserving it for future generations while fostering a sense of ownership and pride among our people.

 *2. Unlocking Economic Potential*

Blessed with fertile agricultural lands, abundant mineral resources, and a strategically advantageous location, Anioma has the capacity to become a thriving economic hub. A dedicated state structure would harness these resources effectively, driving economic growth and creating opportunities for its people.

 *3. Strengthening Political Representation*

Currently, the Anioma people face challenges in having their voices adequately heard in the national arena. The creation of Anioma State would ensure stronger representation, allowing us to advocate more effectively for policies that address our unique needs and aspirations.

 *4. Advancing Infrastructure Development*

Years of neglect have left Anioma’s infrastructure lagging behind. A dedicated state would prioritize investments in roads, bridges, schools, hospitals, and other public facilities, laying the groundwork for sustainable development and improved living standards.

 *5. Enhancing Social Services*

The establishment of Anioma State would facilitate the expansion of quality education and healthcare services, reducing poverty and fostering a healthier, more educated population. These improvements would directly translate into better opportunities and overall well-being for our people.

 *A Call to Action*

The creation of Anioma State is not merely a matter of administrative convenience—it is an essential step toward unlocking the potential of a region brimming with promise. It is a path to equity, progress, and prosperity for the Anioma people and a contribution to the broader Nigerian project of balanced development.

I therefore appeal to the National Assembly, political leaders, and all relevant stakeholders to support this noble cause. Together, we can forge a brighter future for Anioma, one that reflects the true spirit of justice, development, and unity.

Delta and transparency in governance

0

By Afam Nweze

At inauguration on May 29, 2023, Delta governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, made a solemn pledge; to use the state’s resources for the advancement of the state. He promised to keep the ledger open, to run a government of accountability and transparency.

Barely a year and a half later, it has been promise-kept. Delta State was recently ranked among top 10 states in the 2024 Governance Accountability and Transparency Index (GATI), a project developed as an annual report, focusing on the accountability and transparency perception index of each of the 36 state governments in Nigeria. Delta is in the top bracket in good company with Lagos, Kwara, Ekiti, Anambra, Enugu, Benue, Akwa Ibom, Borno and Osun states. They were all ranked in Category A, on equal Average Index Points.

Five globally-acceptable methodologies in measuring the indices, namely: surveys; document review; expert assessments; data analysis and index aggregation were used during the state-by-state scrutiny on governance with regard to accountability and transparency.

Data released on the index explained how the rankings were arrived at. States that scored between 85% and 100% are in Category A, and rated Exceptional Performance(EP); those with 65% to 84% are in Category B, and adjudged Strong Performance (SP); 45% to 64% are in Category C (Average Performance, AP); 25% to 44%, are in Category D (Poor Performance, PP); while 0% to 24% are in Category E (Non-Performance, NP). Delta came strong in Category A, a fulfilment of Oborevwori’s pledge to demystify governance by making every Deltan count through shared and evenly distributed resources, inclusivity and openness.

The survey was facilitated by the Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers with a team of data analysts and verifiers spanning the media spectrum, academics, and a wide gamut of civil society organisations. The exercise is in tandem with extant global best practices where states and nations are subjected to critical reviews on their performances and efficiencies using laid down parameters verging on fiscal responsibility, resource management, application of emotional intelligence, employment generation, youth empowerment and upskilling, literacy level, inflation rate, capital to recurrent expenditure ratio, wealth-creation initiatives and internally generated revenue.

It bears re-affirming that Oborevwori has never shied away from public scrutiny of his leadership and governance under him. At every forum, he openly states the policy direction of his government, all captured in the M.O.R.E agenda. He inherited a couple of ongoing projects. He promised to complete them, bucking the noxious trend among some governors who jettison projects of their predecessors to the detriment of the people. He made the development of the Warri-Sapele once-thriving district his priority. He wants to restore the lost glory of the two cities. He promised to continue with the momentum of infrastructural development in the state. Every word he utters speaks development, not fractious politics. And step by step, he has been going about the serious business of governance of one of Nigeria’s most complex and sophisticated states.

The governor’s creed is his unwavering commitment to fiscal discipline, honesty, prudence, and transparency in governance. Oborevwori is not an accidental governor. He came prepared. His pedigree in the public ecosystem as governors’ aides at various times, then as Speaker (historically the longest serving Speaker and the only speaker who transited to the position of governor of Delta state) lends him to the tough job of managing the inherent complexities of the state. Perhaps, this explains why he’s always intentional, not compulsive, in taking certain decisions.

By far, his strength has been his unalloyed devotion to fiscal discipline. At a recent event in Asaba on Governance and Policy Direction Conversation, themed “More Agenda: Economic Dynamics of Policy Direction, Open Governance and the Youth Inclusivity Question”, the governor, for the umpteenth time, stressed his commitment to ensuring fiscal responsibility and judicious resource allocation in completing ongoing projects, and engendering youth inclusivity in governance. Oborevwori is a youth-friendly governor and this reflects in the multi-sector empowerment of youths in the state and even in his appointments. Many of the commissioners in his cabinet are below the age of 40. The composition of the State Executive Council is an undeniable proof of his commitment to youth inclusivity in governance.

He listed elements of his M.O.R.E agenda to include policy thrusts for inclusive and sustainable economic growth, private sector-driven job creation initiatives, 21st century-compliant human capital, accelerated infrastructural development and more efficient and effective governance and accountability systems.

He believes that the starting point for good governance is instituting a regime of fiscal discipline and responsibility. This is even more germane in these times when the national economy has been impaired by crushing headwinds.

“In our current operating environment of anxiety and uncertainty occasioned by the abrupt removal of fuel subsidy and continuing devaluation of the naira, the challenge for political leaders at all levels of governance is to think outside the box and demonstrate the highest levels of discipline, honesty, prudence, and transparency in government.

“To these values we are totally and irrevocably committed, and we will do everything within our power as a government to entrench them in public administration”, Oborevwori assured Deltans.

So far, his administration has demonstrated an iron-cast resolve to ensure that public funds are judiciously applied as prioritised, first to the completion of some inherited projects and initiation of new projects all targeted at improving the quality of life of the people.

In this season when some governors have gone inert on capital projects, it is the routine to see the sprouting of mega projects in Delta with contractors working ceaselessly to meet deadlines. Whether in the far-flung riverine areas or the upland fringes of the state, there is always one project ongoing, some being commissioned. All this, coupled with huge expenditure in human capital development, welfare of workers, social security support for the underclass and improved funding for education and healthcare, are made possible by the intentional fiscal discipline of the Sheriff of Delta.

Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North Senatorial District, was a distinguished guest at the 2024 Otu- Oka-Iwu Week, a major event that gathers political leaders, traditional rulers, and cultural figures to discuss crucial issues impacting the Igbo people.

The theme of this year’s week-long celebration, “Strengthening Igbo Unity: The Quest for the Creation of a New State in the South-East,” served as a platform to address regional and national challenges while also exploring ways to foster greater unity and development within the Igbo community.

During his speech, Senator Nwoko underscored the need for unity among the Igbo, stressing that collective efforts are essential to achieving the region’s developmental goals and ensuring equitable political representation within Nigeria.

He noted that only through solidarity can the Igbo people achieve their aspirations for socio-economic, and political progress.

Senator Nwoko’s remarks focused on the urgent need for the creation of a new state in the South-East.

He highlighted that the current political structure does not adequately represent the diverse interests and developmental needs of the South-East, which has long been underserved.

He called for a concerted effort to push for the establishment of a new state to ensure that the Igbo people receive the attention and resources they deserve to flourish.

Beyond the broader call for a new South-East state, Senator Nwoko also addressed the specific issue of Anioma State, emphasizing that its creation is vital for the people of Delta North.

He expressed firm belief that the creation of Anioma state would promote political equity, enhance the socio-economic opportunities of the Anioma people, and contribute to the overall growth of the region.

“The creation of Anioma State is not just about fulfilling a political agenda,” Senator Nwoko explained.

“It is about giving our people the chance to have a stronger voice, access to better opportunities, and the ability to shape their destiny.

“This aligns with the larger vision of state creation in the South-East, as it will help ensure a more balanced, inclusive, and fair representation within Nigeria.”

The Senator further reiterated that the push for the creation of Anioma State is in line with the ongoing efforts to strengthen the Igbo unity and give the region a more solid foundation for sustainable development.

“He also noted that as political leaders and stakeholders, it is their responsibility to ensure that their communities are adequately represented and empowered.

Senator Nwoko’s contributions at the OTU Oka-Iwu Week were met with a positive response from participants, with many praising his advocacy for Anioma State and his call for Igbo unity.

The event also highlighted the importance of cultural celebrations and the role they play in fostering a sense of shared identity and purpose among the Igbo people.

The 2024 OTU Oka-Iwu Week concluded with renewed commitments to the ideals of unity, equity, and progress, with Senator Nwoko’s participation further solidifying his position as a key advocate for the advancement of the Igbo cause and the creation of Anioma State.

His ongoing efforts to promote the region’s development and ensure greater political inclusion for the people of Delta North remain central to his vision for a more just and prosperous Nigeria.

Paris Club refunds: Sen. Nwoko’s efforts in funds recovery from creditors

BY AUSTIN OYIBODE

In the 10th National Assembly, the name Senator Ned Nwoko rings a loud bell. For the first time in the history of Nigeria’s senate, a committee was created due to the ingenuity of a first time opposition senator. That is the Senate Committee on Reparations and Repatriation. And the chairman is a first time opposition party Senator, Prince Ned Munir Nwoko. The reason is not far-fetched. Senator Nwoko has a creative mindset to transform the economy of the nation.

Since he came into Nigeria from the United Kingdom and became a member of the House of Representatives between 1999 and 2003, Senator Nwoko has a mindset to contribute significantly to the development of Nigeria. And one of his biggest accomplishments for Nigeria’s 36 states and the 774 local government areas is the Paris Club refunds. The Paris Club refunds which he and his law firm, Linas International, fought for years, brought a big relief for Nigeria’s 36 states.

As at the time the Nigeria government began disbursing the funds to the states and the local governments, the country was undergoing a chronic recession that brought the nation almost to its knees. So, the efforts of Senator Nwoko leading to the recovery of the billions of dollars came at the time of need for the states and the LGAs.

Senator Nwoko’s achievement in this regard had a transformative impact on the nation’s fiscal health. This monumental accomplishment was the result of years of legal battles, persistent advocacy, and unwavering commitment to the economic well-being of Nigeria.

Background to the Paris Club Debt and Refunds

According to Nigeria’s Debt Management Office (DMO), the Paris Club is an informal group of official money lenders formed in 1956 with
its secretariat in Paris, the capital of France.

It was created to find coordinated and lasting solutions to the payment difficulties
experienced by countries that owed its member countries. It is a voluntary gathering of creditor countries willing to treat in a coordinated
way, the debt due to them by developing countries.

And over the years, Nigeria had accumulated massive external debts, much of which was owed to the Paris Club creditors. This debt became a significant burden on the country’s economy, limiting resources available for development and public services.

By the early 2000s when Chief Olusegun Obasanjo was president, Nigeria’s debt to the Paris Club had become unsustainable, with the country spending billions of dollars annually on debt servicing. The situation was aggravated by irregularities in the management of the loans, including overcharges and misapplied interest rates. These irregularities made it imperative to seek redress and reclaim funds that were wrongly deducted from Nigeria’s accounts.

Senator Nwoko’s Entry into the Case

In an interview posted in 2022, Senator Nwoko gave insight into how the battle started thus: “The money was borrowed in the 70s. My work led to a few things. I met President Obasanjo and told him my findings. He called Ngozi Iweala, former minister of finance, Nuhu Ribadu, then EFCC chairman, Gen. Gusau the NSA and his chief of staff.

“I told him that three states had overpaid the loans they took. I told him to tell Iweala to stop further deductions from the states allocations. He agreed. We had our reports from the various courts. He thereafter set up a committee and we sat for three months.

“The assignment was to help other states beside Adamawa and Taraba that were first discovered. It was to examine whether what we found in these two states, former Gongola state, was same in other states.

“After the three months, we discovered we were right. We submitted our reports to Obasanjo. Within one week, Obasanjo called me and told me that he had instructed the minister of finance to stop further deductions from allocations of these states and to apply it across all states. That was a major breakthrough for the states.

“I told the president that it is not enough. All these states have overpaid. There was a list of all the states and how much foreign debts they had. Some were owing 500m dollars. By the time we finished our work, Abia state had to get a refund of 108m dollars. This was the case across the country. There was no state without a refund.”

The entry of Senator Nwoko, a lawyer by training and a former member of the House of Representatives, was a turning point for Nigeria. Leveraging on his expertise in international law and finance, Senator Nwoko spearheaded efforts to investigate the financial records and identify anomalies in Nigeria’s debt repayments.

Nwoko’s approach was meticulous. He conducted thorough audits of the debt repayment schedules, uncovering discrepancies in the sums deducted by the Paris Club. His findings revealed that Nigeria had been overcharged billions of dollars through inflated interest rates, double charges, and other irregularities. This discovery formed the basis for his legal battle to reclaim the excess.

Legal Battles and Advocacy

Armed with evidence of the irregularities, Senator Nwoko filed legal actions both within Nigeria and internationally to challenge the Paris Club’s deductions. These legal battles were not only time-consuming but also complex, involving negotiations with the foreign creditors and navigating international financial systems. Nwoko’s legal team worked tirelessly to present Nigeria’s case, demanding refunds for the overcharged amounts.

The process required engaging with multiple stakeholders, including Nigerian government officials, Paris Club representatives, and international legal experts. Senator Nwoko’s determination to see the case through was instrumental in overcoming the bureaucratic and diplomatic hurdles that often characterize such disputes. His legal acumen and persistence ensured that Nigeria’s claims were taken seriously by the Paris Club creditors.

Securing the Refunds

After years of negotiations and legal maneuvers, Senator Nwoko achieved a significant breakthrough in 2005 when the Paris Club agreed to refund part of the overcharges. This agreement was part of a larger debt relief package that also included the cancellation of $18 billion of Nigeria’s debt. The refunds, amounting to billions of dollars, provided a much-needed boost to Nigeria’s economy.

Senator Nwoko’s role in securing these refunds cannot be overstated. His efforts ensured that Nigeria not only reduced its debt burden but also reclaimed funds that were rightfully its own. The recovered money was used to support critical government programs, including infrastructure development, education, and healthcare.

The Impact on Nigeria

The Paris Club refunds had a far-reaching impact on Nigeria’s economy. For one, they improved the country’s fiscal stability, allowing the government to redirect resources toward development initiatives. The refunds also enhanced Nigeria’s credibility in the international financial community, demonstrating the country’s resolve to address its debt challenges transparently and effectively.

Moreover, the refunds set a precedent for other African nations dealing with similar issues. Nwoko’s success in challenging the Paris Club’s deductions inspired other countries to scrutinize their debt agreements and demand accountability from creditors. This ripple effect underscored the broader significance of Nwoko’s work beyond Nigeria.

Recognition and Controversies

While Senator Nwoko’s role in achieving the Paris Club refunds earned him widespread recognition, it was not without controversy. Critics questioned the legal fees and commissions paid to Nwoko and his legal team, arguing that they were excessive. However, Nwoko defended the payments, emphasizing the complexity and scale of the work involved in securing the refunds.

Despite these controversies, Senator Nwoko’s contributions remain a milestone in Nigeria’s financial history. His ability to navigate the intricacies of international finance and law underscores his commitment to the nation’s welfare.

Senator Ned Nwoko’s battle to achieve the Paris Club refunds for Nigeria is a testament to his tenacity, legal expertise, and patriotism. By successfully challenging the irregularities in Nigeria’s debt repayments, he not only reclaimed billions of dollars for the country but also set a standard for accountability and transparency in debt management. His efforts have had a lasting impact on Nigeria’s economy and continue to inspire discussions about the role of legal advocacy in addressing financial injustices on a global scale.

WE’LL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT SECURITY AGENCIES IN RIVERS STATE – GOV. FUBARA

As COAS hails RGS’s gesture, assures more efforts to combat crime.

Rivers State Governor, Sir (Dr.) Siminalayi Fubara has restated the commitment of his administration to support security agencies in the State to function effectively in the discharge of the duties of protecting lives and properties in the State.

Governor Fubara who spoke at Nigeria Air Force Base Port Harcourt during the commissioning of two blocks of 12 flats each of two bed room prototype residential building on Monday, December 9, 2024, said the responsibility of government transcend delivery of services to the electorates and communities, to supporting critical institutions that protect lives and properties in the State.

“We are here to say as a government our support is not only to those who elected us, those community that we have to see to their welfare but we also have to contribute and support the agencies that also protect lives and property in our State.

“This project that we are commissioning today was not started by our administration. It was conceived in 2017 and it wasn’t completed but our government came and we were approached and knowing the importance of the welfare of the officers of the Airforce, knowing that when they are comfortable they will perform effectively.”

“We have a very difficult situation in our hands where we are battling the cases of oil theft, vandalisation of oil pipeline, and these are men who are always trying to ensure that these national treasures are secured. Our little contribution to their welfare can just be this.”

Governor Fubara who commended the Nigerian Air Force for their efforts in combating crimes and criminalities, particularly against oil theft and bunkering in the state said the task of catering for the welfare of security agencies should not be the exclusive responsibility of the Federal government alone, but should be complemented by other stakeholders.

“I consider it not much but just a little thing that we can do to appreciate the sacrifices they are making for us. It is not only Mr. President that will carry this burden, we in our own little corner are also supposed to contribute to the welfare of this officers.”

“So, what we are doing today is to tell the world and Nigerians that we are not limiting our support to our primary constituents, which is the communities and LGAs, but we also extend our support to other institutions that also help in making Rivers State safe.”

“Like the contractor said the project was initiated in 2017 at the cost of N212million for one reason or the other it wasn’t completed. When we came on board we have to review it and it was valued at over N454million.”

“We felt what is N454million compared to the support that we are getting from the Nigerian Airforce. We use their Airstrip, they are also part of the joint taskforce that are securing lives and property in Rivers State.”

“We said no, this is a little thing that we can do and that was why the government immediately approved and released that amount and what we are seeing today is realization of commitment not just verbal but seeing it to the end.”

He assured the continuous collaboration of the Rivers State Government with security agencies in the state to protect lives and properties in Rivers State, stating, “Our government will continue to collaborate with them(security agencies) to protect lives and property. We shall be gathering again in a few days time, to also show other support for security agencies.”

“But today is to say, Chief of Air Staff, thank you for even allowing us to complete this project. You would have as well said no, don’t bother about it but as a professional who understands that government is a continuous process, you accepted that we do it.”

“Our duty is to provide services, protect lives and property, ensure that we support the government at the center for effective governance to make our people happy. And that is what I believe and stand for.”

“I also thank the Commander for being very supportive especially when it comes to the issue of security. The truth about it is whatever you do in the interest of this State, for the protection of lives and property and existence of this State, I can’t pay you but only God that will pay you. “

In his address, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Bala Abubakar, expressed delight and gratitude to the Rivers State Government for carrying out the project, stating that the Nigeria Air has enjoyed a long standing and beneficial relationship with successive Rivers State Governments.

He said the building of the accommodation facilities for Air force personnel by the Rivers State Governor align with his command philosophy which is anchored on welfare and well-being of personnel, adding that the Air Force has recorded remarkable transformation under President Bola Ahmed Tinibu.

Air Marshal Abubakar said the facilities provided by the Rivers State Government will boost the morale of Air Force personnel in Rivers State to combat crime effectively.

“On behalf of officers, airmen and women of the Nigerian Airforce I extend our heartfelt appreciation to you and the good people of Rivers State for this thoughtful and impactful initiative.”

” This project is not only a demonstration of your commitment to the welfare of our personnel but also a testament to the strong partnership between the Rivers State Government and the Nigerian Airforce.”

” Nigerian Airforce has reciprocated by contributing towards the peace and security of the State primarily through our operation against illegal bunkering.”

Also speaking the Commander 115 Special Operations Group Nigerian Airforce, Port Harcourt, Air Commodore A H Idris commended Governor Siminalayi Fubara for the remarkable achievement of completing the magnificent project which is a shining testament of his visionary leadership and unwavering support.

According to him, “This project represents the spirit of collaboration between the Rivers State government and the Nigerian Airforce. By providing this modern accommodation His Excellency has demonstrated a profound commitment to the welfare of our personnel recognizing that the well-being directly impacts on operational readiness and dedication in safeguarding the State and our beloved country at large.

Describing the project, the Commissioner for Special Projects, Dr Roland Obed-Whyte said the two blocks of 12 flats are a two bedroom prototype model which was completed by the Rivers State government after it was abandoned.

Oborevwori’s legacy projects already manifesting in Delta – Works Commissioner

0

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has been commended for his numerous legacy infrastructural projects already manifesting across the state.

The State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, gave the commendation during the inspection of Edo Road, off Ughelli-Asaba Expressway, Ughelli on Wednesday.

Izeze said the project was one of the new roads conceived by the Oborevwori’s administration to decongest traffic at the busy Otowodo junction in Ughelli.

He expressed delight with the quality of work done by the contractor, adding that over the years Obakpor Engineering Limited had developed to become a reference point for indigenous engineering firms in the state.

According to him, “this is the third time we are coming to inspect this project and I must say, the quality of the finishing that has been done on the rigid pavement so far is actually very, very good.

“I love the aesthetics of what I have seen, considering the fact that I was here earlier on when the reinforcements were being laid.

“I can affirm that the reinforcements were to specification as provided in the Bill of Engineering Measurement and of course, are also in tandem with what was provided in the Bill of Quantities.

“Let me use this opportunity to thank His Excellency, the unusual governor of the state, the Omorotomo of the Urhobo nation, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori for using Obakpor Engineering as a point of reference.

“This is a point of reference to our indigenous contractors and to now tell them they can come to Obakpor Engineering to come and understudy how they have been able to migrate from the ‘cut and nail’ firm that was alleged in the past to this quality professional engineering firm that is leaving aesthetics and, of course, structures of this quality.

“We thank the people of Ughelli, particularly our very energetic youths for the cooperation that they have shown to the Oborevwori’s administration thus far, particularly with respect to the roads that are under the supervision of the Department of Highways and Urban Roads and the Delta State Ministry of Works.

“We thank them for the peace that has been enjoyed in the course of this project and we ask our people to continually show patience understanding and support for the Oborevwori’s administration as we walk towards delivering the MORE Agenda covenanted by the Governor.”

Representative of the contracting firm, Mr Oghenero Oguma said the project was expected to be completed by the end of December, 2024.

The Commissioner also inspected the ongoing construction of Okowa Crescent in Ughelli where he told the Ministry Engineers to intensify its supervisory role on the project.

***Plans public hearings to engage stakeholders, outline C’ttee’s roadmap

The Senate Committee on Reparations and Repatriations, chaired by Senator Ned Munir Nwoko, held its maiden meeting on Tuesday, December 10, 2024.

This meeting marked the official commencement of the committee’s work, which is expected to tackle some of the most pressing historical injustices and systemic grievances in the country.

In his opening remarks, Senator Nwoko praised the composition of the committee, describing its members as a group of accomplished individuals whose diverse backgrounds in politics, business, and public service make them well-suited for the task ahead.

He expressed confidence that their collective experience would drive the committee to success.

“Membership choice of this Committee is appropriate and justified given the reputation of individuals who have made their marks both in Politics, private, and public sectors of the economy.

“I am confident without fear of contradiction that this collection of Distinguished Senators who are members of this Committee shall bring their wealth of experiences, knowledge and exposure to bear on the Committee’s mandates.

“There is no doubt in my mind therefore that the Committee will deliver on its core mandates with significance and high level of success.

It is on this note that I seek your unhindered cooperation and understanding as we navigate the water of this very important Committee”, the chairman stated.

The committee has been saddled with a significant mandate, including investigating historical wrongs done to communities and individuals across Nigeria and recommending appropriate reparations.

Another critical aspect of its work is the repatriation of cultural artifacts that were stolen from Nigeria and are currently held in foreign countries.

Senator Nwoko said that where necessary, the committee would pursue legal redress through international courts to ensure justice is served.

Speaking on the need for inclusivity, Senator Nwoko disclosed that the committee would collaborate with traditional rulers, civil society organizations, and international partners, including the United Nations and the African Union.

He also revealed that public hearings would soon be organized to engage stakeholders and outline the committee’s roadmap.

While acknowledging the late formation of the committee, Senator Nwoko urged his colleagues not to see it as a setback but as an opportunity to rise to the occasion.

“Allthough, the formation of this committee came late, this is a call to service and I totally believe that we will not disappoint the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”, he said.

Sen. Ned Nwoko, seeking to free people- Zik Gbemre

By Austin Ogwuda

“… It took Sen Ned Nwoko, a non Urhobo to negotiate the release of Ewu monarch”  – Zik Gbemre, a socio-political critic wrote recently.

The above statement made by Zik Gbemre few days ago in a write-up where he lamented the unfortunate death of the President General of Okuama community,  Pa James Achovwuko Oghoroko, who purportedly succumbed to death as a result of alleged torture in military detention, tells it all.

Renowned Social Critic and Co-ordinator of Niger Delta Peace Coalition (NDPC), Zik Gbemre, had in that writeup registered his displeasure over alleged nonchallance or foot-dragging exhibited especially from Ewu monarch’s kindred notably the influential leaders  there, until Senator Nwoko rose to the occasion by marching to the military authorities in Abuja to solicit the release of the monarch, who, on his own volition, surrendered when he was declared wanted.

Yes,  his two other counterparts – fellow Senators from Delta State namely Senator Ede Dafinone (Delta Central) and Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas (Delta South) later joined forces with him but, audacious Nwoko, call him a one-man riot squad, is certainly NOT an overstatement. He took the bull by the horn to initiate the monarch’s release.

Who knows it could become another kettle of fish if something untoward had happened to the monarch as the case with  Pa James Oghoroko, the Okuama President General, who is being mourned.

Gbemre in that piece wrote: “First, the military humiliated Ewu monarch, arrested him like a common criminal. Now the chairman of Okuama has died in military cell with Prof. Ekpokpo and other community leaders still languishing in their custody. Nobody knows their condition as we speak”, he lamented.

Not first time Senator Nwoko is walking into the military gates seeking to free people. Recall that on March 12 this year, the troops of 63 Brigade, Asaba uncovered an illegal arms manufacturing factory at Onicha-Olona, Delta North Senatorial District and arrested eight family members in connection with the discovery.

And while many people were lamenting that the arrested family members might not sight the sunlight for a very long time, Senator Nwoko, precisely, on the 10th of April went to the Brigade for their freedom.

He then announced that “Following my recent visit to the headquarters of 63 Brigade, Asaba and productive discussions with the Brigade Commander, I am pleased to announce progress in addressing the situation regarding the illegal arms factory discovered in the Onicha-Olona community.

“Efforts have been made to ensure fair treatment for those involved, balancing justice with the opportunity for rehabilitation and contribution to society.

“I am pleased to reveal that through collaborative efforts, I have successfully secured the release of four family members implicated in the illegal activity.

“However, our commitment to upholding the law remains unwavering, and endeavors continue for fair judgment and potential pardon for the remaining four individuals”, he emphatically stated.

Having achieved that, some little minds may be saying he waded in to secure the release of the arrested family members because they hail from his constituency. Far from it!

Was it quite long after that he spearheaded the release of the Ewu monarch incarcerated in military detention over the Okuama bloodbath?

The Ewu monarch is of Urhobo extraction (Delta Central), Senator Nwoko is an Anioma son (Delta North) but because of the milk of human kindness, insatiable quest for liberation of mankind, irrespective of creed or color, he took a dive, which eventually yielded positive result to the Ewu monarch’s freedom.

The  Ewu King, HRM Ovie Clement Ikolo, immediately after leaving the military ‘guardroom’ visited Senator Nwoko’s residence in Maitama, Abuja in the company of his wife and some family members and could not hide his feelings.

He said  the visit of Senator Ned Nwoko to his detention cell gave him hope.

Hear him, “The day you (Nwoko) came to visit me was the day I regained my bearings. Your presence gave me hope”.

To say that Senator Ned Nwoko’s philanthropic gestures, hunger to quench thirst of mindkind transcends his immediate constituency, (Delta North) or Delta Central as examplified in the intervention of the Ewu king’s anguish but globally is stating the obvious.

To buttress that Ned Nwoko’s quest to redeem mankind from the shackles of slavery, deprivation and so on in a global dimension was evident when he  demanded $5 trillion reparations, apology from colonial masters.

In a communication he sent to them, Senator Nwoko wrote thus, “It would be imperative for the colonial powers to rethink and adjust the dynamics of their relationship with African territories that still struggle with the aftereffects of their atrocities.

“I beseech former colonial masters to invest in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic empowerment within African nations, especially those that have endured exploitation.

“I also urge the reparation of culturally significant artifacts taken from the African continent during the colonial period. In recent years, there have been a few instances of selective return of stolen artifacts to the Benin Kingdom.

However, what justice demands is a wholesome restoration of these items to the peoples and places from which they forcefully and illegally removed them.

And gladdenly, the British High Commissioner in Nigeria, Mr. Richard Montgomery in response to the Senator’s letter of September 19, 2023, addressed a letter dated December 11, 2023, saying that the demands raised were being addressed.

Said the British High Commissioner: “The British government has acknowledged her role in the slave trade in Africa and pledged to address the shared history with honesty and openness.

“I wish to assure you that these issues and given due consideration by both the British High Commission in Abuja and His Majesty’s Government in UK”, the British Envoy disclosed.

In summary, for want of space, this writer to dig more into the archives to clear the ‘Doubting Thomoses’ that Senator Ned Nwoko is actually a humanist to the core, devoid of any perceived hidden agenda his traducers may be throwing up.

OUR PROJECTS HAVE SIGNIFICANT BEARING ON LIVES OF RIVERS PEOPLE – GOV. FUBARA

Condemns attack on his supporters in Ekpeye, flays social media politics

Bags Ekpeye traditional title

Rivers State Governor, Sir (Dr.) Siminalayi Fubara has declared that his administration will not engage in deceit, vindictiveness and frivolities but embark on projects that will have significant bearing and value on the lives of Rivers people.

The governor was also decorated with a chieftaincy title of Eze Eyawe Ugo of Ekpeye land (King of Peace and Eagle of Ekpeye land) by the Eze Ekpeye Logbo, Eze Sir Kelvin Ngozi Anugwo on behalf of the Ekpeye ethnic nationality.

Governor Fubara who spoke during the commissioning of the remodeled Government Girls Secondary School in Ahoada on Friday, December 6, 2024, said his administration places a high premium on education and will not politicize the promotion of excellence in the educational sector through the upgrading of critical infrastructures.

He explained that all the projects so far embarked on by his administration were not politically motivated but conceived to solve the essential needs of the people.

“I am overwhelmed with joy standing here this afternoon to celebrate a project that is not associated with vindictiveness. I use that word because this project was awarded before May 29, it wasn’t funded, the contractors are not even people that I know. But by the special grace of God because of the importance of education that we see as a key thing that we must follow, notwithstanding our problems.”

“On Wednesday this week we inaugurated a project, an 11.8 kilometer Okehi-Umuola-Eberi link road which connects Omuma and Etche and we made a very bold statement there to say that very soon we will be going to Omuma to also inaugurate another project.”

Governor Fubara flayed those who engage in social media hypes to undermine the truth noting that such culpable deceits will soon expire.

According to him, “We challenged them that the project that we are going to commission in Omuma is the first project that they are seeing. A few days later those people who felt the only way that they can survive is social media and to sell dogs. I wonder why you will go to school, your parents will spend money and the only profession you choose is to be a data boy and to sell dogs.”

“I stand here to say that even if there was a project commissioned at that time, it was a farm road that has no impact. We are talking about projects that will add value to the lives of the people.”

He said, “We will not celebrate things that will not make meaning, that is why we are here today to inaugurate this special school for people that are going to be mothers to this great nation. Because of their support for me he was arrested, tried on trumped up charges and detained in Police custody for more than 4 months alongside Chief Cassidy.”

“This thing cannot last forever and I can assure you with all boldness today that they are gradually coming to an end. What we just need is to be patient. We have promised that our approach will be following this process with patience and the fear of God and we will get there.”

“So, Eze Ekpeye and other traditional rulers here who have suffered in the course of supporting us your request for recognition of other traditional stools will be granted.”

“I want to thank the good people of Ekpeye not just Ahoada East for giving us your support. You have shown publicly and openly your position in this government, we will support you with everything that we have got. We will make sure that your son who decided to follow us will be honoured.”

In the Matter of Dele Farotimi before the Star Chamber

Paul Anyebe was a judge of the High Court of Benue State in north-central Nigeria who had a young son with sticky fingers and a sense of adventure It was his role as a dad that endangered his job as a judge.

One night around 1983, Anyebe caught his son attempting to steal from his bedroom. In response, Anyebe pulled his gun in an effort to scare the boy. The gun went off, discharging a bullet which hit and seriously injured the boy. The Attorney-General of Benue State decided to prosecute Paul Anyebe for attempted murder. The Penal Code applicable in Benue State at the time had ample provisions for the crime of attempted murder.

The Attorney-General also added a charge of illegal possession of firearms, a federal offence. Unlike the crime of attempted murder, which was a state crime in Benue State, all firearms offences are federal. The Attorney-General of Benue was well within his powers to prosecute for attempted murder but only the Attorney-General of the Federation could prosecute or authorize prosecution for federal offences.

At the conclusion of the trial, the High Court of Benue State discharged Paul Anyebe on the charge of attempted murder, a state offence, but convicted him on the charge of illegal possession of firearms (a federal offence)for which it sentenced him to three years in prison. The Court of Appeal reduced this sentence to six months in prison or a fine of one hundred Naira. Following this decision and while his appeal was yet to be heard by the Supreme Court, Paul Anyebe was dismissed as a judge.

When the Supreme Court decided Anyebe’s appeal in January 1986, Dahunsi Olugbemi Coker, a Justice of the court, summed up the issue for decision in one sentence: “The short point is whether a State Attorney-General can prosecute an offence created by an Act of the National Assembly.” To this question, the court unanimously responded in the negative. They nullified Anyebe’s trial and ordered the fine paid – one hundred Naira – refunded to him. The Court of Appeal ordered his reinstatement with full benefits.

Adolphus Godwin Karibi-Whyte, one of the justices who decided Anyebe’s appeal at the Supreme Court, said of what the case decided that ”the Attorney-General of a State has no general authority to exercise the powers of the Attorney-General of the Federation to prosecute in respect of Federal offences.”

One effect of this decision is to preclude the prosecution of federal crimes before state courts. A Magistrates Court is a state court. It does not have jurisdiction over federal crimes.

38 years after the Supreme Court of Nigeria established this principle in Anyebe’s case, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on 4 December arraigned lawyer and writer, Dele Farotimi, before a Magistrate in Ekiti State on 16 counts of crimes under the Criminal Code Act, a federal legislation.

Three years ago, Ekiti State enacted into law the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, no. 12 of 2021, which repealed and replaced the state’s pre-existing Criminal Code Law of 2012. Comprising nine parts, 429 sections and 140 pages, Ekiti State’s Criminal Law of 2021 does not include the crime Criminal libel or defamation. Section 70 of the law contains a crime of causing disaffection or breach of the peace through offensive publication but that is a simple offence punishable by six months in prison. It is not in issue in this case.

Last week, on 3 December, operatives of the NPF heisted Dele Farotimi from his residence in Lagos State, where the crime of criminal defamation is similarly unknown to law. They raced him across state lines to Ekiti where they detained him. The following morning, on 4 December, the police arraigned Dele before a Magistrate in the state capital.

This is important because the gist of the charges purportedly preferred against Dele Farotimi before the Magistrate in Ekiti is precisely criminal defamation which is not a crime in Ekiti State.

It seemed quite clear that the charges presented by the police did not disclose a crime known to the laws of Ekiti State nor did they disclose a crime over which a Magistrate in Ekiti State could purport to exercise lawful jurisdiction. Despite the evident absence of jurisdiction on multiple fronts, the Magistrate proceeded with undue haste to order the remand of Dele Farotimi in prison custody for one week until 10 December. The Magistrate probably did not realise that 10 December is International Human Rights Day.

Even if the Magistrate had jurisdiction, which he did not, the crime alleged was punishable with two years in prison. Under section 4(5) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, this is classed as a “misdemeanor” at best, that is to say “an offence punishable by imprisonment for not less than six months, but less than three years.” These are bailable on liberal terms. Offences punishable by more than three years in prison are called “felonies”. Those are regarded as serious offences. The order of remand in this case seemed wilful with a whiff of the pre-determined about it.

The United Nations Declaration of Basic Principles of Justice for Victims of Crime and Abuse of Power has a name for what happens when a court orders prison remand for a crime which does not exist in law and in proceedings over which it lacks powers. It is called “criminal abuse of power.”

Many people claiming to be senior lawyers have invited Dele Farotimi to have his day in court where he can prove the allegations the subject of these charges or face the consequences. This is clearly designed to make all this seem like an invocation of law. It isn’t.

First, Dele Farotimi can only do so before a court of competent jurisdiction. A Magistrate claiming to sit over a crime that does not exist in the state is not such a court.

Second, the burden in criminal proceedings is on the state to prove that the accused guilty. So, criminal proceedings in Ekiti or anywhere cannot possibly be the forum for Dele Farotimi to prove the truth of his claims. Anyone who makes that assertion is either wilfully jejune or must concede that the only opportunity to put that to test has to be in civil proceedings.

Third, insisting on the kind of proceedings now going on in Ekiti state without any sense of irony only reinforces the kinds of claims that Dele Farotimi makes in his best-selling book about supposedly legal and judicial processes which seem to occur in the pockets of human principalities given to playing god. A lot of things may yet happen in those kinds of proceedings but it does not look like law will be one of them.

Moreover, in 2021, the Supreme Court of Nigeria – no less – condemned as “vexatious and oppressive” and “dangerously rampant”, the “misuse of the criminal law machinery for getting reliefs in disputes that are civil in nature, by using the instruments of State.” The court also required that “a complainant who initiates a prosecution with the knowledge that criminal proceedings are unwarranted and the remedy lies in the civil law, should be made accountable in law for pursuing misconceived criminal proceedings.”

In that same case in 2021, the Supreme Court described the crime of criminal defamation as “an innovation in Star Chamber”, a reference to a notoriously arbitrary and captured judicial forum dating back to late mediaeval England. It was not a judicial endearment.

Dele Farotimi himself was perspicacious about the events as they have so far unfolded. Shortly before he was taken from Lagos, he warned: “Abducting me to be tried in Ekiti State is not justice but a witch-hunt.”

Somewhere in Ekiti State on International Human Rights Day 2024, the very rights consecrated by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights will face the Guillotine with Dele Farotimi strung up as the sacrifice. Those who think this vindication may yet live to rue their affliction with terminal hubris.

HURIWA hail Senator Nwoko’s advocacy for National Social Security Agency to replace Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has named Senator Prince Chinedu Munir Nwoko, popularly known as Ned Nwoko, the recipient of its prestigious 2024 Human Rights Man of the Year Award.

The award, which will be conferred on December 10, 2024—International Human Rights Day—in Abuja, recognizes his exemplary contributions to legislative excellence, community development, and the advancement of human rights in Nigeria.

In a telephone conversation with HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, at 1:17 am on Saturday, Senator Nwoko graciously accepted the award in principle.

He expressed profound gratitude to HURIWA for the recognition and reiterated his unwavering commitment to justice, equity, and human rights advocacy.

HURIWA, in a press statement, explained that Senator Nwoko was selected for the honor due to his outstanding performance in the 10th Senate and his transformative initiatives that have positively impacted Delta North and beyond.

The association highlighted the Senator’s legislative accomplishments, which include sponsoring 25 bills and moving 19 motions in just two years—a record that surpasses those of many of his contemporaries.

Notable among these is the Data Protection Bill, underscoring his commitment to safeguarding digital privacy and security. He has also championed motions addressing critical issues such as flooding and environmental hazards.

“HURIWA acknowledges Senator Nwoko’s unwavering advocacy for establishing a National Social Security Agency to replace the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs—a visionary initiative that has gained substantial traction.

The recent executive proposal by President Bola Tinubu, which aligns with Senator Nwoko’s vision, demonstrates the far-reaching impact of his legislative efforts.

“Beyond his commendable legislative achievements, Senator Nwoko’s commitment to community development stands as a cornerstone of his public service.

“Among his signature accomplishments is the establishment of Africa’s first Sports University in Idumuje-Ugboko, a groundbreaking institution that integrates academics with sports training, creating unique opportunities for youth development and economic empowerment,” HURIWA stated.

HURIWA also commended Senator Nwoko’s passionate advocacy for the creation of Anioma State, a cause deeply rooted in the aspirations of Delta North communities for justice and equity.

The association acknowledged the historical origins of this movement, initiated over five decades ago by Dennis Osadebe, a former governor of the Midwest State.

According to HURIWA, Senator Nwoko’s leadership in reviving the Anioma State agenda demonstrates his determination to address systemic marginalization and ensure equitable representation.

“The push for Anioma State is not just a political ambition; it is a movement anchored in justice and fairness,” HURIWA remarked, adding that its realization would significantly advance the socio-economic progress of Delta North.

Senator Ned Nwoko is central figure, to combat Malaria scourge

BY EMMANUEL ENEBELI

Malaria, a persistent public health challenge, has long been a significant burden on Nigeria’s social and economic fabric. In Delta State, its effects have been particularly devastating, disrupting livelihoods and community well-being. Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North in the National Assembly, has emerged as a central figure to combat this scourge. Through his Prince Ned Nwoko Foundation and strategic alliances with global health institutions and local organizations like the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) in Delta State, he is championing an innovative, multi-faceted approach to malaria eradication.

The senator’s approach emphasizes African leadership in tackling a problem that disproportionately affects the continent. His foundation’s long-term strategy includes supporting the development of an anti-malaria vaccine through research funding. In the short term, his campaign prioritizes national mobilization for environmental sanitation and fumigation. Plans for clean-up days, the establishment of recycling plants in every local government, and grassroots advocacy for behavioural changes in waste disposal are pivotal elements. By advocating for a National Day of Fumigation, Senator Nwoko’s campaign seeks to engage communities as active stakeholders, further enhancing the project’s sustainability.

This initiative represents a coordinated effort involving federal ministries of health and environment as key stakeholders. Town hall meetings, community-led sanitation appointments, and targeted interventions such as Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) and larviciding are also integral. These measures aim to ensure that malaria prevention becomes embedded in community life, significantly reducing the disease’s prevalence in Delta State and beyond.

Malaria eradication promises transformative socio-economic benefits. In Delta North, where agriculture and small-scale enterprises dominate, malaria-related illnesses often incapacitate workers, reducing productivity and exacerbating poverty. Senator Nwoko’s initiative not only targets disease prevention but also revitalizes economic activity by enabling workers to remain healthy and productive. Families can redirect resources previously spent on medical care towards education, business, and other development priorities.

The education sector stands to gain significantly from this effort. Malaria is a leading cause of absenteeism among school-aged children, particularly during peak transmission periods. By reducing the incidence of the disease, Senator Nwoko’s efforts will help ensure that children remain in school, fostering a generation of learners better equipped to contribute to Delta North’s socio-economic growth. Improved educational outcomes also enhance the region’s potential to develop a more skilled workforce in the long term.

The senator’s work highlights the importance of collaborative governance. Partnerships with global organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation amplify the impact of local efforts. These collaborations demonstrate how global expertise can be harmonized with local solutions, creating a replicable model for addressing other public health challenges. The synergy between vaccine rollouts and community education further underscores the comprehensive nature of this initiative.

The campaign’s social impact extends beyond health benefits. Community clean-up exercises, health education, and vaccination programs foster a sense of civic responsibility and unity. These activities strengthen the social fabric of Delta North, building trust in government-led initiatives and encouraging collective action in other areas of development. Such grassroots mobilization aligns well with the broader goal of fostering sustainable development.

Public health improvements through malaria eradication will also enhance Delta North’s attractiveness as an investment destination. A healthier population reduces healthcare costs, increases productivity, and boosts economic stability, positioning the region as a hub for innovation and sustainable development. The ripple effects of a malaria-free environment extend to every facet of society, from improved business prospects to enhanced quality of life.

Senator Nwoko’s vision exemplifies the transformative power of health-focused leadership. His ability to integrate legislative advocacy, community engagement, and international collaboration reflects a holistic approach to governance. This initiative not only addresses immediate health challenges but also lays the groundwork for long-term socio-economic progress in Delta State and Nigeria at large.

The approval by Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health for the Prince Ned Nwoko Foundation to lead the implementation of the RTS,S malaria vaccine demonstrates the credibility and impact of this campaign. High-level consultations with stakeholders, including WHO, underline the global recognition of the foundation’s efforts. These partnerships have already resulted in a virtual side event at the United Nations General Assembly, further raising the profile of this groundbreaking initiative.

As malaria eradication efforts gain momentum, they set a precedent for tackling other pressing public health issues. Senator Nwoko’s leadership showcases the potential of collaborative governance in achieving significant milestones. His initiative not only reflects the aspirations of Delta North but also serves as a beacon of hope for a malaria-free Delta State, with implications for the entire nation.

To sustain these achievements, individuals, organizations, and governments at all levels need to collaborate in the fight against malaria. By prioritizing investments in healthcare, sanitation, and community-focused initiatives, Delta State and Nigeria can move closer to a future free from preventable diseases and their profound socio-economic impacts. The message is clear: through collective efforts, we can create healthier communities and unlock the nation’s full potential.

This vision is championed by the Prince Ned Nwoko Foundation, an initiative led by Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North in the National Assembly and has been instrumental in the groundbreaking success of the malaria vaccine discovery.

Sen Nwoko Gets bipartisan support for Anioma State creation project ***As APC National Youth Wing Visits him

The National Youth Wing of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in connection with the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Youth Development, paid a solidarity visit to Senator Ned Munir Nwoko, representing Delta North Senatorial District, at his Abuja residence on Friday.

During the visit, the APC youth delegation pledged their full support for Senator Nwoko’s ongoing efforts to actualize the creation of Anioma State.

The group lauded the senator’s unwavering commitment to championing the cause, describing it as a progressive step toward greater representation.

This visit follows similar backing from members of Senator Nwoko’s party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), signaling growing bipartisan support for the Anioma State creation project.

The lawmaker, who has been vocal about the need for Anioma State, expressed gratitude for the show of solidarity from the APC youth wing, noting that such support strengthens the call for equity and justice within the Nigerian federation.

Senator Ned Nwoko is a visionary leader —Reverend Joseph Ugochukwu White

BY AUSTIN OYIBODE

Reverend Joseph Ugochukwu White, a bible scholar and an indigene of Aniocha North, has said that Senator Ned Nwoko is a visionary leader who has made significant contributions to the development of Delta state.

Revd Ugochukwu, who is a global motivational conference speaker, told our reporter that Senator Nwoko’s commitment to the development of Delta state, especially his moves to eradicate malaria from Africa demonstrates his passion for improving lives of Nigerians.

He also said Nwoko’s efforts to promote economic growth, improve infrastructure, and enhance education and healthcare in Delta North have been extremely impressive.

According to him, “Senator Nwoko’s actions in the Senate have been impactful and transformative. He has sponsored several bills aimed at promoting economic growth, improving healthcare, and enhancing education in Nigeria.

“His dedication to serving the people of Delta North and Nigeria is commendable. Furthermore, his ability to work across party lines and build consensus on key issues has been very remarkable.”

Comparing him with Senators who have been in the chambers since 1999, he said: “Senator Nwoko brings fresh perspective and new ideas to the Senate. Unlike some of his colleagues who have been in the Senate since 1999, Senator Nwoko’s experience in the private sector and his exposure to international best practices have equipped him with the skills and knowledge necessary to drive meaningful change in Nigeria.”

Ugochukwu, a former resident South Africa, said Senator Nwoko has demonstrated his commitment to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and has been a loyal party member, hence his leadership skills, experience, and popularity make him an excellent candidate for any political office.

“I believe that Senator Nwoko would be an asset to the PDP in the 2027 general elections. His ability to connect with people, inspire loyalty, and drive results would make him a formidable candidate,” Revd Ugochukwu said.

On Anioma development, he said Senator Nwoko’s vision for the Anioma people is centered around promoting economic growth, improving infrastructure, and enhancing education and healthcare.

He noted that the Senator’s commitment to the development of Anioma land is evident in his various initiatives and projects aimed at empowering the people, improving their standard of living, promoting cultural heritage and preserving the history of the Anioma people.

He added that Senator Nwoko’s pursuit of Anioma State is a reflection of his desire to promote self-determination and economic empowerment for the Anioma people.

Though he agreed that the creation of a new state is a complex process that requires careful consideration and planning, he believes that Senator Nwoko’s efforts are driven by a genuine desire to improve the lives of his people.

He advised Anioma people to remain united and focused on their goals, adding that they should continue to support leaders like Senator Nwoko who have demonstrated their commitment to the development of Anioma land.

No Excuse for Violence Against Women – By Mohamed M. Fall

No cultural practice, tradition, economic, or social pressure can justify the suffering endured by millions of women and girls. Our role is to challenge these harmful narratives.

Gender inequality and violence against women remain among the greatest challenges to sustainable development, not just in Nigeria but globally. According to UN Women, globally, an estimated 736 million women, almost one in three have been subjected to physical and, or sexual intimate partner violence, non-partner sexual violence, or both at least once in their life, which represents 30 per cent of women aged 15 and older. This figure does not include sexual harassment.
Violence against women and girls is a violation of human rights. It undermines the principles of equality, dignity, and respect. This violence takes many forms—physical, emotional, sexual, and economic; and occurs in every part of the world, including Nigeria. From intimate partner violence to harmful traditional practices such as female genital mutilation, trafficking, exploitation, sexual harassment, and assault, the pervasive nature of gender-based violence reflects deep-rooted societal inequalities.
Reports have also established that women who have experienced violence are more likely to suffer from depression, and anxiety disorders with long-lasting dire consequences. The United Nations further captured the situation of gender-based violence globally: “For at least 51,100 women in 2023, the cycle of gender-based violence ended with one final and brutal act—their murder by partners and family members. That means a woman was killed every 10 minutes.”
In Nigeria, violence and harmful practices against women and girls happen every day, and most of the time they are not reported. The Nigerian Demographic and Health Survey in 2018 found that 9 percent of women aged 15 to 49 had suffered sexual assault at least once in their lifetime and 31% had experienced physical violence. Restrictions and implications from the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the gender-based violence (GBV) in the nation.
One of the global initiatives that consistently puts a spotlight on the issue of gender-based violence is the 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence which starts on 25 November, the International Day For The Elimination Of Violence Against Women and ends on 10 December, the Human Rights Day. This period serves as a crucial platform to raise awareness, mobilize action, and demand an end to all forms of violence against women and girls.
During these 16 Days of Activism, let us not only reflect on the stories of pain but also celebrate the strength, resilience, and courage of women and girls in Nigeria and the rest of the world. Let us honor their voices and commit to a future free from violence. It is a time to reflect on our progress and acknowledge the work that still lies ahead.
“No Excuse. UNiTE to End Violence against Women” is this year’s theme, and according to the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, it means standing with activists around the world who are calling for change and supporting survivors of violence. It is a powerful call to action. It asserts our collective responsibility to ensure that no woman, or girl is subjected to violence in their homes, communities, or workplaces. Violence in any form is never justified, acceptable, or excusable.
It is critical that we unite in our efforts to eliminate violence in all its forms. We must collaborate with governments, civil society, international organizations, and the private sector, to address the root causes of violence. We need to confront the harmful attitudes, stereotypes, and discriminatory norms that perpetuate a culture of violence. It is essential to break the silence and ensure that survivors receive the support and protection they need to rebuild their lives.
There is no excuse for violence against women. No cultural practice, tradition, economic, or social pressure can justify the suffering endured by millions of women and girls. Our role is to challenge these harmful narratives. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that every woman and girl can live free from fear of violence and discrimination. We must create safer environments where women and girls can access education, work, health services, and lead fulfilling lives without fear.
As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to observe the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, I stand with the global community in declaring an urgent truth: There is no excuse for violence against women and girls. This is not a matter for debate; it is a call to immediate action. The United Nations in Nigeria stands firmly against violence in all its forms. We are resolute in our commitment to supporting the Nigerian government and all stakeholders to end gender-based violence.
Our work in Nigeria focuses on strengthening legal frameworks, improving access to justice, and creating awareness to change mindsets and behaviours.
But we cannot do this alone. We need support from everyone: community leaders, religious institutions, educators, and individuals. It is vital to engage men and boys as partners in this fight, encouraging them to speak out against violence, challenge harmful gender norms, and foster respect and equality in their homes and communities.
We must also ensure that survivors of violence have access to the services and resources they need to heal and rebuild their lives. This includes healthcare, legal aid, and counseling services. It is essential to create spaces where survivors can share their stories without fear of retaliation and where their dignity is preserved.
Together, we can unlock the full potential of every Nigerian and build a future where gender equality is not just an aspiration but a reality.
There is no excuse for violence against women. Together, we can make a difference. Together, we can create a world free from violence and discrimination. A world where women can live with diginity and respect.

OPINION: A Reflection on Leadership, Loyalty, and Legacy in PDP (Part 1) By Udochukwuka Ogeleka Emmanuel

The call for party loyalty in Delta State’s PDP, especially under the leadership of Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, is a paradox that highlights the party’s decline from its foundational principles. It is ironic to witness loyalty being canvassed to uphold a system designed to perpetuate the dominance of a single family and its cronies across Delta North. This is particularly jarring to those familiar with the historical evolution of the PDP in Delta State.

How the PDP Gained a Foothold in Delta North

The PDP’s rise to prominence in Delta North did not begin with Okowa. In fact, the party struggled to gain acceptance in the region, historically dominated by a fanatical following for Great Ogboru and the opposition. It was during the tenure of Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan that the PDP finally established a stronghold in Delta North.

Uduaghan adopted a democratic and inclusive leadership style, empowering local leaders to deliver their wards and ensuring grassroots mobilization. This approach, a continuation of the political philosophy of Chief James Onanefe Ibori, transformed the PDP from a struggling entity into a household name.

While the PDP naturally enjoyed popularity in Delta Central and South, it faced significant resistance in areas like Abraka and Delta North. However, Uduaghan’s strategy of empowering community leaders began to shift the narrative. This newfound popularity led to the emergence of new political structures that directly challenged Ogboru’s dominance in Delta North.

The Usurpation of Power

Despite the efforts and successes of Uduaghan and other party leaders, the PDP in Delta North was eventually usurped by Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa and his ally, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, who was then the state party chairman. Okowa capitalized on the sentiments of Anioma indigenes, promoting the idea of an Anioma governor. However, beneath this veneer of regional pride lay a ruthless ambition that alienated many of the party’s foundational leaders.

Governor Uduaghan, recognizing the dangers of Okowa’s unchecked ambition, began searching for an alternative Anioma candidate. However, through a combination of political maneuvering and influence over key party structures, Okowa secured the governorship.

A Legacy of Division and Betrayal

Upon assuming office, Okowa’s leadership style was marked by exclusion and vindictiveness. He systematically sidelined those who had supported his rise to power, including Nwaoboshi, who eventually faced incarceration. Even Chief James Ibori, who had played a pivotal role in Okowa’s emergence, was marginalized.

Okowa’s administration alienated many party loyalists, particularly in Delta North, where PDP leaders who had worked tirelessly to build the party’s popularity were cast aside. Pre-Uduaghan, even electoral manipulation was a challenge in Delta North, with ballots often hijacked and discarded. It was only through Uduaghan’s inclusive leadership that the PDP began to win legitimately in the region.

Today, those who benefited from Uduaghan’s leadership and the party’s growth now speak of loyalty to a PDP that no longer resembles the inclusive, democratic institution it once was. Instead, it has become a shadow of its former self—an instrument of personal ambition and control.

The Betrayal of Southern Nigeria

Okowa’s political ambitions reached their zenith when he backstabbed the entire Southern Nigeria political bloc to secure the vice-presidential ticket alongside a Fulani running mate, violating a regional accord he had championed. This betrayal culminated in a resounding defeat at the polls, even in his home constituency of Ika.

In a desperate bid to retain relevance, Okowa threw his weight behind the gubernatorial candidacy of Sheriff Oborevwori, seeing it as his last hope for political survival. However, his influence is waning, and the PDP must now choose between breaking free from Okowa’s sinking legacy or facing political oblivion.

A Path to Redemption

As Delta State approaches the 2027 elections, the PDP stands at a crossroads. Governor Sheriff Oborevwori must decide whether to distance himself from Okowa and rebuild the party from its fractured state or risk being dragged down with him.

The party’s foundational leaders, many of whom have been sidelined, are poised to reclaim the PDP and restore it to its former glory. The coming years will be a test of leadership, vision, and the ability to unite a party that once stood as a beacon of hope and development in Delta State.

History has a way of remembering those who build and those who destroy. The PDP’s future in Delta State will be shaped by the choices made today. One thing is certain: the era of unchecked ambition and betrayal is coming to an end. The die is cast, and the party must now chart a new course or face the consequences.

19 Northern Governors Asked to See New Proposed Tax Law from Opportunities Offered to Lift Millions from Poverty

Governors of the 19 Northern States have been advised to embrace the realities of the proposed new tax law by tapping into what it holds for millions of poor people in the region that could be lifted out of poverty.

The advice was given on Monday in Abuja at a press conference organised by the Northern Christian Youth Professionals.

The President of the association, Isaac Abrak flanked by other executive members at the press conference, said the northern governors need to draw on the positive of the proposed tax regime which planned to free millions of poor Nigerians from tax burden as well as small businesses which would stop paying taxes, noting that these two positive could breathe life into many businesses and make many people rich in the north of the country.

Abrak said: “We acknowledge that this shift presents unique challenges for northern states, which have for many years relied on the federal sharing the 50% VAT equally to all the states, and it is with these funds that the state governors run the states. As such a reduction in federal VAT revenue under this model could significantly impact the region.

“However, this is not a time to dwell on challenges alone. Instead, we urge our state governors to take this challenge as an opportunity to redefine the northern region’s economic narrative—a narrative rooted in independence, innovation, and resilience.

“For decades, northern Nigeria has been a cornerstone of the country’s economic history, from the era of the groundnut pyramids to its agricultural and industrial contributions. Today, we must harness that same spirit of enterprise and determination to develop the economy that this new VAT derivation formula will favour us too.

“One of the key ways the reforms will benefit the northern region is by creating an environment conducive to business growth and investment. With a reduced corporate income tax rate, businesses in the region will have more resources to invest in expansion, hiring, and innovation. This, in turn, will lead to job creation, increased economic activity, and a rise in living standards.”

He added that: “Similarly, this reform is sensitive to the plight of the common man, in this sense our northern Talakawas as it Exempts individuals earning N800,000 or less from paying income tax. Currently, if you earn a total of N800,000 annually, you are required to pay N84,000 out of this amount as income tax. But With this bill, you will not pay anything. So you see that the bill helps to fight poverty at the Talakawas level (masses).”

He equally explained that: “Also only those earning above N50 million get to pay 25% personal income rate. Under the current law, once you earn above N3.2 million you will be charged 24% income tax.

“Look at how the bill also is sensitive to small businessmen and women, it exempts small businesses from paying income tax. In this bill, small companies are defined as those with an annual turnover of N50 million or less. In the current law, small businesses are defined as those with a turnover of N25 million or less. What this means is that up to 90% of businesses in Nigeria will be exempted from paying income tax.

“Reduction of company income tax rate from 30% to 25% in 2026 for medium and large companies. Elimination of minimum income tax of 1% charged on the gross earnings of medium and large companies that did not declare profit. Only profit is taxed under the new tax bill.”

He said: “So if you look at the bill critically you understand that while its takes from the rich more it protects the poor.

“So this is why we are calling on our Northerner Governors and elites to look inward-our region is endowed with immense potential, including: A dynamic population rich in human capital and innovation.

“Leaders in industry, such as Aliko Dangote, who epitomize African industrialization.
A thriving creative industry, led by Kannywood, showcasing the region’s cultural vibrancy and global relevance with a big presence on social media. Abundant arable land, positioning the region as a potential agricultural hub for Nigeria and Africa.

“To unlock this potential, we must act decisively: Develop Economic Plans: Our leaders must implement comprehensive short, medium, and long-term economic strategies to drive local development.

“Revitalize Key Industries: Textiles, leather, confectioneries, and automobile production must be restored to provide jobs and foster economic growth, the new Corporate Income Tax will help these companies to revitalize and grow.

“Address Security Challenges: Insecurity and terrorism, often fueled by religious intolerance, must be confronted through policies and programs geared at uniting the people. Once we secure our region, multinational investors will come in to invest because we have the population for their markets.

“Embrace Meritocracy: We must empower the brightest minds and talents, ensuring excellence drives progress.

“With these measures, the northern region can regain its economic vibrancy, generate substantial VAT revenue internally, and secure a thriving, self-reliant future.”

Abrak said: “This is our moment to redefine northern Nigeria—not as a region dependent on federal allocations or VAT generated from companies headquarters outside our region but as a powerhouse of productivity and innovation.

“This is the time for our states in the north to contribute resources to the centre just like any federating state from other states in the south.

“Moreso there is also the Income Tax which proposes to make the rich pay more than the poor.

“We call on all northerners and Nigerians to rise to this challenge. It’s important to note that it’s not a correct perception that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is trying to victimize the north with the Tax Reform Bill but rather trying to provide a conducive economic environment for robust economic boom in our region.”

He advised that: “Let us unite to support these reforms, seize the opportunities they present, and work together to build a brighter future for our region and our nation.”

HOW MEN SHOULD HANDLE WOMEN WHO ARE OVER 40

When some Women turn 40 or 50 years, something major shifts in their personality.

They become bolder, more rebellious, more religious, more focused, more opinionated and more emphatic about what they want.

Don’t be surprised when a previously obedient and submissive Woman on turning 40/50 changes completely.

Most especially when she had given birth to Children.

At this age, she may not go with the flow anymore, she may begin to ask some questions :
– Is sex food?
– Query some of your instructions
– Even the way you behave.

She will also become more outspoken and will not be afraid to speak her mind.

If care is not taken, you may have to do for yourself :
– Dry cleaning
– Preparing food to eat

Because it might take her more time before she responds to your request.

There is something definitely special about turning 40/50 for Women.

If she has never challenged or questioned your instructions, get ready to be shocked by her boldness and confrontational attitude.

The only way to avoid total breakdown of Peace and Harmony in the home is for Men to become fair, objective and reasonable in their approaches to issues at home and/or at work.

Men should bear in mind that at this age, Women also harbour lots of regrets about the decisions they have made in life so far … Their Husbands may be one of them!

A woman at this age is a better Judge of character and will evaluate a Man using very different & weird parameters.

Men must start on time to prepare for this phase in the lives of their Wives/Partners/Bosses/Subordinates.

What you put in is what you get!
If you have treated her fairly, then you don’t have anything to worry about.

She will begin to appreciate you better if for any reason she didn’t do so in the past.

On the contrary if you haven’t been nice to her, fasten your seatbelt, the ride is about to get pretty bumpy.

Bianca Ojukwu hopes Tinubu will secure Nnamdi Kanu’s release

BU SUNNY A. DAVID

Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu has expressed hope that President Bola Tinubu will secure the release of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu.

Speaking at the memorial for her late husband in Owerri on Tuesday, she suggested that President Tinubu recognizes the significance of Kanu’s freedom.

She argued that freeing Kanu would expose criminal elements who have used his detention as a cover to perpetrate heinous crimes in the Southeast.

Delivering her remarks on the theme “Unifying the Igbo Race,” Bianca Ojukwu called for an end to the violence plaguing the Southeast, emphasizing that the Igbo people are not known for harming their own.

She stressed the need for collective action to reclaim the region from criminality and insecurity.

“The release of Nnamdi Kanu is paramount to separating genuine freedom fighters from criminals causing mayhem in the South-East. Our people face existential threats, and we must act to restore peace,” she said.

She lamented that, years after the passing of Dim Odumegwu Ojukwu, the Southeast has become a region marked by violence and insecurity, forcing many to flee their homes.

“Communities are empty. Our illustrious sons and daughters have fled. Kidnappers now abduct their brothers for ransom. This is not what Dim Ojukwu fought for,” she said.

Bianca Ojukwu underscored the need for President Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu, asserting that his freedom would help identify those criminals hiding under IPOB to wreak havoc.

“President Tinubu understands the importance of Kanu’s release. It will expose the masqueraders behind the violence and help restore order. I will do whatever it takes to ensure His Excellency grants this request,” she stated.

She also decried the imposition of violent “sit-at-home” orders in the South-East, which she said contradict the ideals of self-determination and have stifled economic activities in the region.

“Ndigbo are enterprising and their brother’s keepers. We must reclaim our land and continue to propagate the ideals for which Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu stood.”

Bianca Ojukwu’s call adds to the growing clamor for the release of Nnamdi Kanu as a means to address insecurity and foster unity in the South-East.

UN Systems calls on Stakeholders to Renew Commitment Towards Freeing Nigeria from Gender-Based Violence

The United Nations Systems in Nigeria has reiterated the need to eliminate violence against women and girls and dismantle harmful cultural norms, calling for renewed commitment from stakeholders.

This appeal was made during the Joint UN Accountability Forum and the Orange Lighting Ceremony held at the UN House in Abuja, with the theme: Towards Beijing+30: Unite to End Violence Against Women and Girls”.

Speaking at the event, the UN Women Deputy Representative to Nigeria and Co-Chair of the Gender Thematic Group, Dr. Nesreen El-Molla, lamented the socio-economic toll of gender-based violence (GBV) on Nigeria’s development.

She noted that behind every statistic is a woman or girl whose potential has been stifled and rights violated.

She said: “Today’s event is a call to action for all of us to advocate for a Nigeria free from violence against women and girls. It is also a platform to address harmful norms by engaging with allies such as traditional and faith leaders, the private sector, and communities to reshape the narrative around gender equality. We all have a role to play in upholding universal human rights, calling out abuses, and holding systems accountable to their commitments.”

El-Molla said UN Women remains dedicated to strengthening programming efforts and scaling up investments in policy and legislative reforms that protect women’s rights.

She added that: “Through our mandate, UN Women will continue to champion basic women’s rights, including political participation, economic empowerment, and freedom from violence. We are also committed to providing holistic support for GBV survivors by expanding services, setting up shelters, improving policies, and working with community leaders to tackle harmful practices.”

The UNESCO Head of Office in Nigeria, Abdourahamane Diallo, also highlighted UNESCO’s role in addressing GBV through education and skills training for women, particularly in marginalized communities.

He said: “UNESCO aligns with the Beijing Platform for Action by promoting gender equality through education and eradicating GBV. We aim to integrate GBV prevention into policies and collaborate with civil society to challenge harmful cultural norms through grassroots interventions.”

The Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, on her part, called for strategic action to overcome barriers in combating GBV. She emphasized the importance of gender-disaggregated data in designing evidence-based interventions and effective resource allocation in education, healthcare, and economic empowerment.

She noted that: “For Nigeria, closing gender gaps could add $15 trillion to our GDP annually by 2050. Women constitute 49% of our population and own 41% of small and medium enterprises. Data remains a vital tool in our fight for gender equality. Equally important is the effective allocation of resources to programmes that make the greatest impact, particularly in education, healthcare, and economic empowerment. As we approach the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action, the Beijing+30 Report offers an opportunity to reflect on progress made and areas requiring further attention.”

Country Director of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) for Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, Dr. Vanessa Phala-Moyo, commended Nigeria’s efforts to address workplace violence.

She said: “Nigeria is the first country in the subcontinent to ratify the ILO Convention Against Violence and Harassment. This demonstrates leadership-level commitment, and we will continue to support the private and public sectors in implementing measures to address violence and harassment.

Other highlights of the Event are:
Orange Lighting Ceremony: A symbol of hope, unity, and the vision for a world where women and girls live free from violence and fear.

Beijing+30 Report Launch: Celebrated progress, renewed commitments, and outlined future priorities for achieving gender equality in Nigeria.

The event reaffirmed the collective resolve of the UN, government, and stakeholders to create a safer, more equitable Nigeria for women and girls
