The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) yesterday inaugurated its chapter in Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro.
The inauguration, which took place at the University’s new auditorium, followed the resolution of a well attended Congress of Academic Staff, which conferred on the University the Observer status in ASUU.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Zonal Coordinator, Benin Zone, who led the national delegation to the event, Prof. Monday Igbafen, formerly Chairman of ASUU at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, urged members to rally round their executive members so that the chapter’s chartered status can be accomplished within a short time. He listed numerous benefits of belonging to a trade union like ASUU, which include the welfare benefits of her members and the protection of members’ interest against intimidation and harrassment from any quarter.
Also, speaking at the occasion, one of the resource persons, Prof. Fred Esumeh, immediate past Zonal Coordinator of Benin Zone, comprising Delta, Edo, and Ondo States, said that the three cardinal objectives of ASUU are the quest for knowledge, truth, and service to humanity. These he said all lecturers must uphold.
Earlier, in his office, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. J. S. Oboreh, who received the ASSU leaders, said that it is a thing of joy to have ASUU in the institution because ASUU and management are partners in progress. All Academic Staff, he said, belong to ASUU except anyone officially writes to opt out, which will be detrimental to such a staff.
He seized the opportunity to eulogise the Delta state Governor Rt Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori for adequate funding of the university and granting autonomy to higher institutions in the state. This, according to him, gives him and all chief executives of higher institutions in the state the power to hire staff whenever the need arises, without any form of encumbrances. He ascribed this achievement to the advice of the former Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Patrick Muoboghare to the then Governor Senator Dr. Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa, who bought the idea.
The high point of the ceremony was the ratification by Congress of the interim Executives, who include: Dr. Bensandy Ozokeraha, Chairman, Dr. Romans Nwandialu, Vice Chairman, Dr. Edafe Atajeromavwo, General Secretary, Pst. Obaro Ikupa, Financial Secretary, Dr. Precious Omoruwou, Treasurer, Engr. Omokaro Idama, Welfare Secretary, Elohor Okoroyibo Osevwe, Investment Officer, Dr. Akpaobokigho Panya, Internal Auditor and Uzezi Edherie, Assistant Secretary.
The Human Rights Advocate and Societal Justice (HRSJ) has lauded the leadership quality of the Commandant General (CG), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence (NSCDC), Dr Ahmed Audi in the security outfit.
The group gave the commendation in a statement signed by its Chairman and Secretary, Dr Omage Aneta and Doni Biukeme respectively and made available to journalists in Warri.
HRASJ is a non-governmental organisation advocating against injustice and dehumanization in the society.
The group said that the Commandant General deserves commendation and a pat on his back for job well done, adding that his hard work prowess have give the Corps a lift to an enviable standard.
They said that the transformational drive that the NSCDC boss had brought into the security outfit was equal to none in the history of the outfit.
According to them, CG. Audi who is the 3rd substantive NSCDC Commandant General had provided a transformational leadership for the Corps within the period of assumption of office.
The group said that the progress and achievements of the Corps under the Audi leadership had tremendously changed the narrative of the security outfit.
They noted the trend of extraordinary transformation in the Corps under the leadership of CG Audi to include but not limited to improved staff welfare, settlement of backlog of promotions and corresponding arrears of staff, the review of staff Insurance Scheme.
The group listed others to include training and retraining of officers and men, massive arrests and prosecution of thousands of suspects who allegedly engaged in Crude oil theft and vandalism of oil pipelines in the Niger Delta region and other regions of the country, adding, “it’s on record that the moral boost and encouragement he dishes out makes the Delta State Command of the Corps to stand out by going all out in their synergy with Tantita Security Services Nigeria Ltd (TSSNL)to arrest vessels involved in illegal oil bunkering activities in the Niger Delta region thus boosting oil production per day as well as smashing criminal elements that targets Critical National Assets.”
Others were: the arrests of Railway vandals, foiling of over 48 kidnap attempts of School Students and Teachers, creation of Civil Defence Academy in Jos, Plateau State, Creation of NSCDC Arms Squad Training School at Ugede Development Area, Nassarawa State
Creation of NSCDC Female Squad to aid in tackling kidnapping and other crimes in schools, Introduction of career progression courses for personnel of the NSCDC, increase in the welfare packages of Corps’ personnel, massive acquisition of arms for NSCDC operational use.
Purchase of mini fire fighting tankers for Disaster management, procurement of Armored Personnel Career [APC] vehicles for the NSCDC, destruction of over 350 illegal refineries in the Niger Delta.
Construction of official and residential buildings within and outside the NSCDC Headquarters and procurement of operational and office equipment and among others.
According to the group, “the fertile synergy he encouraged between the NSCDC and the Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited (TSSNL) in curtailing crude oil theft in the Niger Delta region is something commendable.
“Beyond this collaboration, it is on record that the NSCDC has made several personal arrest of crude oil theft in the Warri creeks and other parts of the Niger Delta region.
“The Commandant General deserves commendation. The progress and achievements of the Corps under Audi leadership has tremendously changed the narrative and would bring the Corps to its fulfillment in due course if allowed to complete the tenure,” they said.
The group observed that the trend in which the NSCDC had risen from obscurity to become one of the most enviable security outfits under Audi’s leadership was rather worth applauding than condemning.
“We have closely watched with kin interest and observation the trajectory of successes and achievements of the NSCDC in the past years. The overall assessment shown that the NSCDC has grown to become an elite organization of international standard and should be allowed to continue under the present Audi led administration,” the group concluded
United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has said that the move by the Nigeria’s Senate to give capital punishment to drug trafficking offenders may add little or nothing to reducing the crime.
Country Representative, UNODC, Oliver Stolpe, gave the verdict at a two-day Media Personnel Training on Ant-Corruption, Police Accountability, Wildlife Crime and Sensitization on Drugs Prevention, Treatment and Care, (DPTC), organized by the UNODC, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other partners, on Tuesday in Abuja.
He said: “The deterrent effect of death penalty as never convincingly be proven. There is no proof of the effectiveness of death penalty.
“Our stance as UN is clear on the death penalty we are principally and categorically against it. And from a very practical viewpoint, I have to say, it doesn’t make sense,” he said.
Stolpe insisted that the UN has always advocated for clear distinction between crimes of drug trafficking as opposed to the issue of drug use which it considers primarily to be a health issue,”and that should be dealt with as such. addiction is a health condition, it is not a choice.”
On the need for an updated drug data for Nigerians, he observed that the current national drug survey for Nigeria was last done six years ago, (2018), and therefore does not reflect the current situation for Nigeria.
He noted that: “The drug use survey of 2018 remains as far as I can tell the most cited study in the media, this data is outdated and I think a very critical question that media could ask at that point is really well, how can we still refer to 2018 data to describe today’s levels of drug use?
Speaking on the importance of the training,, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA), Brigadier General Buba Marwa, (Retired), said the media remains an indispensable partner in Nigeria’s drug war .
Represented by the Secretary NDLEA, Shedrach Haruna, he said “For us in NDLEA, the media is a valued partner on whom we rely to foster a friendly ecosystem that aids anti-illicit drug abuse and trafficking in society.
“This is well-thought training for media professionals, given that the media is a crucial link between the public and law enforcement and a potent tool for the entrenchment of transparency and accountability in the law enforcement process.”

The wife of the Anambra State Governor, Mrs. Nonye Soludo, has encouraged parents and families with children suffering from cleft deformities to take advantage of the free treatment available in the State.
The Governor’s wife who made the call in Awka has partnered with Smile Train to provide free surgeries for children with cleft lips and palates.
The treatment is ongoing, and Mrs. Soludo urges everyone to bring their children or refer anyone who needs the treatment to the nearest public health facility or call 09030055335 or 08133979363 for quick response.
She said that for the fact that cleft deformities can be treated, no child in Anambra should be left to suffer from them or from the stigma that comes with such problems.
Mrs. Soludo explained that the partnership with Smile Train to treat anyone with cleft deformity in the State for free is in the best interest of those with cleft problems, with the target to bring the number of such deformities in the State to zero.
She urged parents and families who have children with cleft lips or palates, or anyone that knows a child with such problem to refer them to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku Awka, or to the nearest public health facility where they will receive free surgeries.
She further reassured that the treatments for cleft lips and palates are totally free in Anambra, and encouraged people to take advantage of the ongoing opportunity, even as she commended Smile Train for the partnership, stressing that the state government is always exploring the best options for the wellbeing of all residents.
Mrs. Soludo’s partnership with Smile Train to provide free surgeries for children with cleft deformities in the state began in 2023, with a total of eight children successfully treated so far since the programme kicked off.
The member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Afam Victor Ogene has strongly criticized Governor Soludo’s plan to appoint the 8th set of Local Government Area (LGA) Chairmen in just two years, describing it as “ridiculous” and “puppeteering”.
Hon. Ogene argues that the frequent changes in LGA leadership undermine democracy and stability, and accuses Soludo of manipulating the system for personal gain.
He described the decision by Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, to snub the calls for elections and singlehandedly appoint another set of Local Government Transition Committee members, as ridiculous, undemocratic, abuse of power and unfair to the development dreams of the people.
This was contained in a statement the Federal Lawmaker made in Awka, on Sunday, May 19, 2024, in response to the correspondence between the office Governor and the local government Chairmen of the Governor’s party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), calling for submission of CVs by interested persons within the party, through the office of the party’s LGA Chairmen, for appointment into the Transition Committee.
According to Hon. Ogene, who is the Labour Party’s House of Reps’ Caucus Leader, “Records show that Governor Soludo changes LGA Transition Committee members every three months, and have therefore, made these curious changes seven times since assumption of office in 2022. By the time he makes another of such change this month, that would be the 8th time within two years in office.
“That to me, would be an inglorious record by a democratically elected governor. This puppeteering style of leadership, which toys with the destiny, aspiration and desires of the grassroots, must be resisted and not allowed to continue to shrink the development potential of the LGAs.
“The local government ought to be the most important tier of government, as envisaged by the Nigerian Constitution, because it’s not only the tier that is closest to the people, it is also the obvious foundation of both the subnational and the federal government. And should not be at the whims of state governors.
“Such undemocratic practice of appointing LGA administrators, rather that democratic election, is an enabler of impunity and lack of democratic accountability and also hurts transparency in the local governments and the state as a whole, as those so appointed would only scramble for personal interests during the three months of their stay in office. This does not help the management of scarce resources or the development of the LGAs.”
Speaking further, Hon. Ogene queried: “For instance, what manner of meaningful development plan would a TC Chairman articulate and execute within a period of three months? Isn’t it troubling that Governor Soludo, a prominent economist, is promoting this charade contrary to all the economic indices that point to the decreasing economic and social fortunes of the people in the grassroots as a result of the shrinking presence of government development activities in the rural areas?
“What really is Governor Soludo afraid of in conducting elections in the LGAs, in line with his campaign promises and the desires of the people in the grassroots and provisions of the Constitution? It should be noted that other States, such as Delta, Lagos, Edo, Rivers, Kaduna, Awka Ibom, etc hold elections in the third tier of government, no matter how imperfect; why then is Governor Soludo appointing and discarding LGA administrators as if they are used tissue papers?
Meanwhile, the Senate on Thursday, May 16, 2024, also accused State Governors of misappropriating funds allocated to local government councils in Nigeria, saying that arm of government was dead in the country, as a result of the overwhelming powers of the state governors over the LGAs.
It also said the dream of achieving the objectives of the local government system has encountered harsh realities as successive governments have often eroded local autonomy, limiting their financial resources and control over decision-making.
The Senate, consequently, asked the federal government to stop further allocation of funds to caretaker committee-led local government areas, LGAs, and urged President Bola Tinubu to, as a matter of urgency, champion the cause of full autonomy for local governments in the country.
The resolutions of the Senate were sequel to a motion sponsored by Senator Suleiman Kawu, NNPP, Kano South.
The Senate resolved that President Tinubu should champion the cause of full autonomy for local governments in the country.

Babafemi said two members of the syndicate: Imran Olalekan and Ishola Olalekan were arrested on April 3, 2024 following their bid to export 3.4 kilogrammes cocaine on a Qatar Airlines flight going to Oman through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
He said while Imran was the courier conveying the drug consignment to Oman, Ishola recruited him for the head of the cartel, which investigation has now revealed to be Alhaji Kazeem Omogoriola Owoalade whose Indian residence permit bears Abdul Qassim Adisa Balogun based in India.
He revealed that efforts to dismantle his network in Nigeria paid off after five weeks of surveillance and follow up operations when another member of the syndicate, Hamed Saheed who works directly with the baron was arrested last Tuesday at Abule Egba area of Lagos. He added that it was indeed Saheed who lodged Imran in a hotel a day before his aborted trip to Oman and equally dropped him and Ishola at the Lagos airport the day they were arrested.
He disclosed that during a search of Saheed house, NDLEA operatives recovered some phenacetine, a cutting agent for Cocaine, weighing 900 grammes. He confessed that the recovered substance was what was left of the consignment Imran was taking to Oman the day he was arrested.
Saheed’s arrest led to a follow up operation at the home of the Owoalade couple at 20 Eyiaro street, Ogudu Orioke, Lagos where another suspect was arrested and a new model Toyota RAV4 SUV marked FKJ-773 JJ belonging to Rashidat and additional 400 grams of Cocaine recovered in addition to already prepared suitcases to be used for illicit drug concealment, digital weighing scales and other paraphernalia,

The Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has uncovered and dismantled an illegally constructed refining site with over 100,000 litres of stolen crude oil in Adobi settlement in Etche Local Government, Rivers State.
The Commander of the CG’s SIS, DC Dandaura Appolos while giving the brief hinted that the operational success was achieved through credible Intelligence that some suspects have vandalized a multinational company well head and connected galvanized metal pipes with large hoses thereby syphoning crude and processing it locally.
A statement on Saturday by the National Public Relations Officer of NSCDC, Babawale Afolabi, stated that the CG’s SIS immediately swung into action and upon arrival at the crime scene they uncovered several sites where massive illegal refining of stolen crude oil were carried out.
Appolos was quoted to have said: “Just as we valued and protect our informants, the information received are always treated with caution and prompt alertness; as soon as we arrived the suspect took to their heels but we were able to arrest one Godspower Oyibo (M) 32 years from Delta State who is now assisting us with further investigation”.
He disclosed that: “On the crime scene there were reservoirs cemented with trampoline and filled with approximately 100,000 litres of crude oil. While the following exhibits were sighted:
A Yellow Colour Robin EY 20 Pumping Machine, Galvanized metal pipes, long large hoses, Already Vandalized Well head, stolen crude worth 100,000 litres stored in reservoirs, calibrated surface tanks, processed AGO in cooking pots and metal buckets”.
He said: “The Rivers State Commandant, Basil Igwebueze has been approximately intimated with the development; we assure the public that the Corps will not be fatigued in the relentless war against vandalism and crude oil theft across the nation even as suspects arrested would have their time in Court after diligent investigation”.

A Journey of Excellence and Service
Aganaba resonates with honesty, generosity, and an unshakable spirit. As we celebrate his 60th birthday, let us weave together the threads of his remarkable life—a life that has touched hearts, built bridges and left footprints of love.
A firm foundation on education and sportsmanship
Bola Aganaba stood out from his early years. His academic brilliance was matched only by his unwavering character and sporting prowess. Aganaba’s educational voyage began at the Elizabeth Fowler Memorial Primary School in Surulere, Lagos, where he imbibed the values of discipline and curiosity. His secondary education at Baptist Academy Lagos further shaped his character, laying the groundwork for an excellent future.
Pursuing knowledge, he embarked on a path that led him to the Rivers State University of Science & Technology (RSUST). He honed his intellect here, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering in 1987. But Bola was not merely a scholar; he was also a sportsman. His excellence extended to the hockey field, football pitch, and track and field events, where he proudly represented RSUST. Representing his school and Lagos State in hockey, he left an indelible mark. His talent extended to the athletic field, where he excelled in the long jump—a skill that could have taken him to international heights had he pursued it further. His love for football remains undiminished. Whether playing or watching, the beautiful game stirs his soul. But beyond sports, his compassion knows no bounds. He despises injustice and champions the cause of those who suffer.
A career forged across Nigeria
Aganaba is a road warrior, and his professional journey mirrors the diverse landscapes of Nigeria itself. As a civil engineer, he crisscrossed the nation, ensuring that Nigerian roads were motorable and leaving his mark in states such as Lagos, Sokoto, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Abia, Kano, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). His work ethic and expertise caught decision-makers attention, leading to his appointment as the first Chief Maintenance Engineer for Rivers State under the then-newly established Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) in June 2003.
Aganaba’s trajectory didn’t stop there. In July 2009, he ascended to Executive Director (East Operations), a testament to his leadership and vision. His contributions to infrastructure development reverberated far beyond the highways he meticulously maintained. His goal was clear: to make a difference wherever he found himself.
Remarkably, his tenure in the Federal Ministry of Works was more than a job; it was a calling. His exemplary service to the nation reverberated through the highways he meticulously maintained. However, his role as the first Chief Maintenance Engineer for Rivers State under FERMA showcased his commitment. Notably, he ensured that the road leading to the Federal Government College Odi remained impeccable—a gesture that endeared him to the people of Odi.
His integrity was unshakable. Contractors marvelled at his refusal to accept bribes, preserving the family’s reputation. Aganaba’s benevolence extended beyond bloodlines; he touched lives within and outside the family. His heart radiated love, compassion, and generosity, leaving an indelible mark on those fortunate to cross his path.
A beacon of faith, family, and community
Beyond engineering, Aganaba’s heart beats for service. He served for years in the Follow-up and Evangelism Department of RCCG Kings Palace, Port Harcourt. His diligence and commitment earned him the endearing moniker of the “Kingfisher”—a symbol of tireless effort in church planting committees. Rural parishes in Rivers State owe their existence to his unwavering dedication.
Since December 2014, Pastor Aganaba has been the guiding force behind RCCG Holy Ghost Arena in Utako, Abuja. His pastoral role extends beyond the pulpit; it permeates the lives of those who seek solace and inspiration within those hallowed walls.
Aganaba’s ministry transcends pulpits. He’s a soul winner in the marketplace—a living epistle read by all. His faith isn’t a Sunday garment; it’s woven into every step he takes. As a pastor, he doesn’t merely preach; he lives the message. His heart beats for lost souls, and his hands reach out to lift the fallen. His life is a living sermon—a testament to God’s grace.
More importantly, Aganaba’s personal life is a canvas painted with love and family bonds. He shares his days with Mrs. Anita Aganaba, his partner in life’s journey. Together, they are blessed with a daughter named Charmaine Aganaba.
As a husband to Anita, a senior executive at the giant oil firm ENI Nigeria, and a father to Charmaine, Aganaba exemplifies love in action. His unwavering commitment to God and family sets a high standard. Anita’s words echo the sentiment shared by all who know him: “He is an extraordinary, loving, selfless, kind, humble, unassuming, generous soul, totally sold out to God.” Bola’s love transcends mere words; it is a symphony of deeds that resonate through the lives he touches.
As we celebrate Bola Aganaba’s 60th birthday, we honour a man whose life is a testament to excellence, service, and unyielding faith. His journey continues to inspire and uplift all fortunate to know him.

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has said that there is a greater and assuring resolve of his administration to follow his course lawfully to the end concerning the festering political crisis in the State.
The Governor, therefore, urged supporters and all Rivers people to eschew violence and conduct themselves in compliance with the rule of law, as he is already on top of the situation.
Governor Fubara spoke at Tema Junction, venue of the ceremony for the official inauguration of Emohua-Kalabari (Tema Junction) Road project in Asari-Toru Local Government Area on Friday.
The project inauguration was performed by the senator representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson.
Governor Fubara assured that he will continue to lead the State with the fear of God and guided by the laws of the land, adding that he would never let Rivers people down, including all those who believe in his leadership.
He said, “I want to thank everyone of you for your support. I want to thank you specially for your support during the time of the election; before, during and the wonderful support we are getting now after the election. And the support is what is shocking the whole world.
“We don’t have any Assembly member, like they said. We don’t have any local government chairman, like they said. But we have the people. Having the people is the most important thing. I assure the people that we will not disappoint them.”
Governor Fubara emphasised: “We will lead as a Government that has the fear of God, purposeful for the people. I assure you that we will not let you down. We will not bring any form of disgrace.
“But I am not asking you to be violent. No need for it. The most important thing is our course: we will follow it lawfully to the end. And by the special grace of God, we are on top of the situation.”
Governor Fubara encouraged the people to continue to support the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government, and ensure that they are protecting important Government installations in Kalabari land.
The Governor observed the troubling issues of unabated illegal bunkering activities and vandalism of critical infrastructure of State, which has caused a depletion of inflow of revenue to the federation accounts.
Governor Fubara, who particularly said that recurring reports of the Nigerian Navy emphasised the preponderance of such activities in the area, tasked youths to stop engaging in such economic sabotage.
“When you watch or read most of the reports on the activities by the Nigerian Navy, you will see that greater part of these bunkering activities are done, more especially in this area.
“I want to appeal to you, there are other justifiable and clean means of livelihood. We must not subject ourselves to economic sabotage. Please, I am appealing to you, it is better we desist from it.
“I am going to constitute a very high-powered delegation that will visit these areas, and talk to the leadership: the chiefs and the community heads and leaders, so that we can improve on our present state.
“When we have (exploited) more crude oil resources from this area, it brings in more resources (finances) to the state, it brings more resources (finances) to the country. Mr President can do more projects and the State can also do more projects. Afterall, you will want me to do more projects. So, support me in this fight to end illegal bunkering and oil pipeline vandalization.”
Commenting on the Emohua-Kalabari Road project, Governor Fubara said it was awarded on the 18th February, 2023, by the immediate past administration at the cost of N21.2billion but only paid N6billion.
Governor Fubara stated that his administration paid the remainder of N15.2billion, and completed 70 percent of the job to confidently claim it as part of his projects delivered for the good of the people in Kalabari land.
He said, “Although the Permanent Secretary did mention a few things, and I know that when we leave here, some agents will want to say one thing or the other. So, I came prepared.
“Let me also say it here, maybe, Julius Berger Nigeria PLC was being economical with their presentation. On my table as I am talking to you, there is a request for variation of the cost of this project.
“This is because, as at the time this project was awarded, and while the project was on-going, there was serious exchange rate differences. But I told them not to worry that they should go ahead and complete this project, and I assured them that we will sort them out and they accepted.
“For the records, this project was awarded on the 18th of February, 2023, by the immediate past administration. In the month of March, the first payment for the project was done, and the next one was in April, and the third one was in May.
“The total value of this project is N21.2billlion, and out of that, only N6billion was what the previous administration committed.
“When we came on board, we said to the contactor, go ahead, assuring that we are not cutting it short because we know that the project is for the benefit of our people. I can boldly say here that the balance of N15.2billion has been paid completely.
“So, for those of you that are mathematicians and even those of you who understand elementary statistics, you will understand that 70 percent of this project was done by this administration. Therefore, we can boldly say that this project was delivered by this administration.
“That is not even an issue but the reason why we have to go on this line is just to explain to our people, so that you will understand where we were and exactly where we are now.
“Originally, our mantra was supposed to be ‘Consolidation and Continuity’. And if that is our mantra, the success of our administration should not be ascribed to anybody, but to the success of the administration, to the success of governance, knowing fully well that one will serve out our tenure and another will continue, and government is a continuous process.
“But with what we are faced with, we have no other option but to do this explanation so that we will understand the works that we are doing. For those people who say that we have not been doing anything, they will know that we have been doing a lot silently, not with noise or media exaggeration.”
Governor Fubara, who assured that he will continue to deploy resources of the State to better the conditions of the people, directed the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works to commence the process for the immediate extension of the road from Tema Junction to Abonnema Town.
The Governor explained that the Trans-Kalabari Road project was re-routed away from the Ogbakiri axis because of the high maritime line entailed in the construction work and the associated cost but assured that the road will still connect to Tombia Town.
“Let me assure our people, as I have said before, this Government is a Government that is focused. This Government is a Government that wants the forgotten people to feel the impact of governance.
“This Government is a Government that wants to give opportunity to everyone. You don’t need to be close to me to benefit, that is the truth. This is because I see it as sycophancy. What we need to do, we will do it for our people.
“So, let me thank the four local government areas which co-operated to make this project a success: Emohua, Asari-Toru, Degema and Akuku-Toru. And let me also thank the traditional leadership of the Kalabari Kingdom, please just be peaceful, everything that we desire, by the special grace of God, will definitely come our way.”
Performing the inauguration of the project, the senator representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, said that crisis makes some people to forget governance but added that Governor Fubara has refused to be distracted but had rather committed to improving the wellbeing of the people.
Senator Dickson, who was former Governor of Bayelsa State, said the project is a life-changing development endeavour because his experience plying the road when it was deplorable was also unpleasant but noted that that phase was now gone, and joined the people to appreciate Governor Fubara for the feat.
He said, “Today, we have seen what you are doing. When we led that delegation last week to you at Government House, I didn’t know that you are embarking on life-changing projects like this across the length and breathe of this area.
“Not many people will see this and doubt your commitment and your understanding of the imperatives of development. Your love for our people, your love for Rivers people, and your understanding of the challenges facing your people, if anyone was in doubt, looking at this wonderful road, such doubts, clearly will be misplaced.”
He praised the Governor for what he has achieved in such a short time, despite the deliberate distractions, and urged him to remain focused to do more for the people.
He added as a competent accountant, he was sure that the Governor will prudently deploy every taxpayer’s sweat into meaningful development projects that will positively impact the majority of the people of the State.
Providing the description of the project, the Permanent Secretary of Rivers State Ministry of Works, Engr Atemea Briggs, said the Emohua-Kalabari Road is 15.24km in length, and was awarded at the cost of N21.26billion by the previous administration, which paid only 28 percent of that sum, which amounted to N6billion with work left at preliminary stage.
Engr Briggs stated other features of the road that is serving as major access into Kalabari land to include its width as 5.3 meters, with asphalt thickness of 100 millimeters – made up of 60 millimeters concrete asphaltic binder course and 40 millimeters asphaltic wearing course, with a median divide of 600 millimeters and installed street light, now completed and fully paid.
In his presentation, the Deputy Regional Manager of Julius Berger Nigeria PLC, Engr Rimon Morisho, said the Emohua-Abalama-Tema Junction Road project was awarded to them in February, 2023, with a completion period of 18 months.
He said that because of the company’s commitment to meeting contractual obligations, they ensured delivery of the project in good quality and ahead of schedule.
Engr Morisho stated that his company was proud to have contributed significantly to the development of infrastructure in the region, and expressed gratitude to Governor Fubara for the opportunity, including the trust reposed in them to be part of his success story.
In her welcome address, the Vice Chairman of Asari-Toru Local Government Area, Mrs Tekena Daphne Wokoma, recalled that the road, which was properly constructed with bridges first in the 1990s, eventually collapsed few years after.
The unattended deplorable condition of the road, she stated, created motoring discomfort for commuters with kidnappers and armed robbers finding it more easy to operate on the route but added that Governor Fubara has wiped away their tears, saved them from the nightmare and associated difficulties.
Dr Wokoma said the road will further improve the economic potentials of the benefiting communities in the four local government areas of Emohua, Degema, Asari-Toru and Akoku-Toru.

He said: “As you inaugurate the AHL Gas Processing Plant, GPP2, here in Kwale, Delta State, this event marks a significant milestone for the country, especially for the good people of Delta State.
“The GPP2 represents a significant leap in our effort to harness the potentials of Nigeria’s natural gas resources, particularly in the energy sector.
“With its capacity to produce high quality gas, this facility stands as a beacon of hope and prosperity for our nation as the clean gas produced in this plant will be transported via the OB3 Gas pipeline, thereby maximising our distribution network towards ensuring efficient delivery of gas to various destinations.
“This event will boost our energy security and also stimulate economic growth, create employment opportunities and improve the standard of living for our people.
“As we celebrate this great occasion, we must also look towards the future with optimism as the construction of the GPP3 is already underway.
“This represents another testament to the fact that investments in Delta State are safe and the state is the first point of call for investors”.
President Bola Tinubu, who virtually inaugurated the three critical gas infrastructure projects undertaken by SEEPCO and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and its partners, said the commissioning of the projects was in line with his administration’s commitment to significantly leverage gas to grow the Nigerian economy.
The three projects commissioned by the president are the AHL Gas Processing Plant 2 (GPP – 2) – 200mmscf/d which is an expansion to the Kwale Gas Processing Plant (GPP – 1); the AHL Gas Plant, which is being developed by AHL Limited, an incorporated Joint Venture owned by NNPC Limited and SEEPCO; and the ANOH-OB3 CTMS Gas Pipeline Project.
Speaking at the event, President Tinubu said the three critical gas projects support the Federal Government’s effort to harness more value from the nation’s gas assets, while eliminating gas flaring.
He said the delivery of the projects was accelerated from the inception of the administration in keeping with the overall objective of deepening domestic gas supply as a critical enabler for sustainable economic prosperity.
Protocol officers have been charged to be courteous, professional and employ emotional intelligence while conducting state functions. The Senior Policy Adviser to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Rt. Hon. Funkekeme Solomon, gave the charge while interacting with Protocol Officers in the relaunch of the SERVICOM initiative, a message that he has been taking to Ministries Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in the state. Solomon who oversees the Office of Labour Relations and SERVICOM noted that state functions entail a combination of time management, courtesy to guests and employing emotional intelligence in handling the different people with different orientations. “In state functions, numerous categories of people are in attendance, some with large egos demanding special treatment and recognition. Of course, there are genuine VIPs among them. While attending to each category, protocol officers should be sensitive to their emotions, but remain firm and professional”, he said. An important feature of state functions, according to him, is time management. “State functions are serious business that should be brisk, business-like and devoid of distractions. It is not a forum for comedy or use of language that may pry into private lives of individuals. Even when such jokes are well intentioned, the fact that people of diverse cultures and orientation are there make the use of comedy delicate and capable of hurting individuals. “Of course, comedy and light jokes are desirable but should reserved for non-formal occasions”, he said. Solomon urged career civil servants and political appointees in the department to synergise their activities, avoid internal rivalry and be driven by the need to do what is in the best interest of their collective principal, the Governor of Delta State. Since the relaunch of SERVICOM began about a month again, over 60 MDAs have been visited by Solomon and his team. Places where SERVICOM have been relaunched include the Governor’s and Deputy Governor’s offices. Others are the Secretary to the State Government, Head of Service, Delta State University, Abraka and some local government areas.
The rejuvenation of the SERVICOM Initiative Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Governor of Delta State, was taken to Delta State University, Abraka on Wednesday with a call for a paradigm shift in attitude in the provision of services to the public and students. Represented by Rt. Hon. Funkekeme Solomon, the Governor’s Senior Policy Adviser, whose office is spearheading the reinstitutionalisation of the SERVICOM initiative, he said under the MORE Agenda of his administration, the key objectives are to enhance the provision of the dividends of democracy through the adoption of the virtues of transparency, fairness and accountability. Addressing the university’s management led by Professor Andy Ogorchukwu Egwuyenga, Oborevwori said given the challenges facing the country, it is imperative to effect a fundamental change in the management of limited resources and service delivery to the people. As the premier institution among the four universities owned by the Delta State Government, the Governor said Delta State University, Abraka should lead the drive for excellence in the education sector, adding that in research and administration, timeliness and accountability are indispensable. He urged the management to compile the challenges impeding quality service delivery, promising that such will be addressed within the limits of available resources. Responding on the university’s management, Prof. Egwuyenga pledged to partner with the government in effecting a change in attitude among public officers. “We are committing to the success of His Excellency’s MORE Agenda and this relaunch of SERVICOM will permeate across all the levels of the university’s administration”, the Vice Chancellor said. The relaunch of the initiative was later conducted at Ukwuani Local Government Area with Head of Personnel Management, Mr. John Akwakwa, leading the council’s management team at the ceremony at Obiarukwu.
Nigeria government has called for the collaboration among the counties of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to develop the tourism potential of the subregion and place West Africa in prime position to compete with other regions.
The Director General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation, Folorunsho Coker, also called for the streamlining of policies on tourism in countries in the subregion while delivering a speech at the opening ceremony of the meeting of experts and stakeholders of the private tourism industry on the monitoring and evaluation mechanism of ECOTOUR 19-29 and the ECOWAS Tourism Accommodation regulator in Abuja on Tuesday.
Coker said: “It’s the season to collaborate not to compete,” adding that: “It’s in the spirit of collaboration that we will grow pan-African tourism.”
He said: “I want to encourage the localisation of policies”, insisting that policies would only be successful when localised.
Coker said all the regulations in the region be streamlined into one that will guide activities in the tourism sector across the 15 ECOWAS member states, urging for the training of tourism operators in the region as well as the introduction of technology in tourism.
He said: “We must embrace technology or it will leave us behind.”
The Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture of the ECOWAS Commission, Massandjé Toure-Liste said the meeting drew aspiration from the ECOTOUR 19-29 action plan, adopted by the Authority of Heads of State and Government which was designed to serve as a roadmap for promoting responsible tourism.
She said: “To this end, our technical meeting today centres around drafting the operational modalities for two critical tools: the ECOTOUR 19-29 monitoring and evaluation mechanism and the ETAR – ECOWAS Tourism Accommodation Regulator.
“The ECOTOUR 19-29 Monitoring and Evaluation Mechanism will involve developing operational guidelines and appointing dedicated members or focal points to oversee its implementation.
“Simultaneously, for the ECOWAS Tourist Accommodation Regulator (ETAR) we will define the composition and operational modalities in alignment with Regulation C.REG.2/07/23.
“Our focus on Private Sector Collaboration includes; facilitating dialogue among representatives from the private tourism sector and encouraging strategic alignment and collaboration at the regional level.
Massandjé, who was represented by the ECOWAS Commission’s Director of Private sector, Dr Anthony Elumelu, said: “Additionally, we aim to support private sector players in finalising the process of creating a regional confederation.”
The meeting is expected to end on Friday 17th May, 2024.
.Applauds Gov Fubara For Provision Of Alternative Sitting Venue
Rivers State House of Assembly has confirmed Dagogo Israel Iboroma, SAN, as a commissioner to serve in the State Executive Council.
The House confirmed Iboroma as commissioner when he appeared for screening during plenary at the Auditorium of the Administrative Block Building of Government House in Port Harcourt on Monday.
This was sequel to the correspondence the House received from State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, who forwarded the name of Iboroma as commissioner-designate, and requested that he be screened.
The commissioner-nominee had been led to the floor of the House by the Sergeant-at-Arms, David Wariboko.
Iboroma, standing before the House, fielded questions, and assured that his allegiance shall be to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Rivers State Governor and the State, while upholding his oath of office and contributing his professional expertise to further the good governance of the State.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Victor Oko-Jumbo, divided the House for voting after the debate over the confirmation of Iboroma.
At the end, the House affirmed confidence in the nominee, and subsequently confirmed him to serve as commissioner in the State Executive Council.
Rt Hon. Oko-Jumbo instructed the Clerk of the House, Dr G. M. Gillis-West, to convey the resolution of the House to the Executive Governor of Rivers State.
The speaker also expressed the appreciation of the House to Governor Fubara for his timely intervention in providing an alternative venue for them to carry on with their legislative duties.
Rt. Hon. Oko-Jumbo condemned the burning of the hallowed chambers of the State House of Assembly by hoodlums in the night of October 29, 2023, which caused a temporary set back in conducting proceedings of the House.
He said, “You will recall that we woke up on October 30, 2023, to see that some hoodlums and miscreants who did not mean well for our dear State and our people had set the hallowed chambers of the Rivers State House of Assembly on fire, which caused a temporary setback in the performance of our legislative functions. His Excellency’s intervention was indeed swift and timely, and we are grateful.”
After the screening and confirmation of the commissioner-nominee, which was the only item on the Order Paper of the day, the House adjourned sitting to Thursday.
Joseph Goebbels, the author of Nazi propaganda, is known to have said: “repeat a lie, often enough, and it becomes the truth”. He became notorious for coining fables and seeking to project same as truth.
In Delta State, this master of illusion seems to have converted a tiny clique as disciples, with lies as their merchandise. These persons not only live in a fool’s paradise, but also seek to convert the majority to embrace the truth from a convoluted lens.
Ever since, it became obvious that Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori was likely to become the Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta, these spin doctors quickly went to work and concocted all manner of evils, all aimed to stop a man destined for greatness.
Soon, tales of certificate forgery, age falsification and identity theft started making the rounds against Oborevwori. Conspiracy theories quickly sprang up. There seemed to be no end to the labyrinths laid out to stop him from becoming Governor.
To put paid to any hope of attaining the Governorship position, the malevolent elements extended their machinations to the courts. Over 38 cases were conjured, terminating eventually at the Supreme Court, which finally gave Governor Oborevwori total victory.
Having failed in their determination to stop the Ukodo of Okpe, as Sheriff is also known, from becoming Governor, these bearers of false tales, decided to lay siege, hoping that their targets would make mistakes they could latch on to and bring down his administration. This, for them, was an objective that would not be difficult to attain, especially since, by their fabled imagination, Deltans believe that Oborevwori was incompetent to do the job.
To drive home the point of being incompetent, these naysayers were first to criticize the composition of Oborevwori’s cabinet. Apparently, they had hoped that the executive council would be made up of recycled politicians. When this did not happen, our so called critics quickly jumped into the fray and branded the administration as incompetent.
Obviously, Governor Oborevwori assembled a blend of the young and not so old of upwardly mobile technocrats, educated hotties with a knack for excellence. This is in fulfilment of his Youth O’clock Agenda; an unprecedented development as far as governance in Delta was concerned, with majority of the cabinet members being between 30 and 45.
These unrelenting traducers of the Ukodo of Okpe have also been harbingers of the fake news associated with the award of N78 billion contract to construction giant, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc. Hardly a day passes without a new twist to the falsehoods linked to the transaction.
First was the claim that the N78 billion was rather exorbitant, which was another way of saying the contract was excessively inflated. They contended that local or indigenous contractors could have done the job for far less. Next was the assertion that over N50 billion had been paid to Julius Berger, half of which they alleged, had been pocketed by the Governor. This was in spite of overwhelming evidence that only 25 percent of the N78 billion had been paid as mobilisation fee to the contractors.
None of those making the false claims acknowledged that it was the first time the Delta State Government would be awarding jobs to Julius Berger. Neither did they applaud Oborevwori for insisting on delivering quality jobs to the people.
The relocation of the Faculty of Management Sciences from the main campus of the Delta State University of Technology, Ozoro in Isoko North to an offshoot campus in Orerokpe, Okpe Local Government Area provided another fodder for the grovelling elements to ply their trade.
An elated Governor Oborevwori was shocked after he announced that the relocated Faculty of Management Sciences had been replaced with three elite faculties, that a section of the naysayers retorted with jeers and hysteria. The three faculties – Basic Medical Sciences, Pharmacy and Health Sciences – were meant to provide critical manpower for the state and Nigeria in general, a masterstroke that any right thinking patriot should give the governor kudos.
Sadly, the narrative was painted that Oborevwori was against the Isoko people for approving the movement of a faculty to Orerokpe. How could anyone rate management courses over and above medicine, pharmacy or health sciences? Does it not amount to standing reason on its head to place courses for which you need to be exceptionally brilliant below that for which average performance in entry score makes students eligible to be admitted?
It is gratifying that the Ukodo of Okpe and immediate past Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly remained unfazed despite the provocation. Instead, he took the actions of these self-seeking individuals with equanimity. He has since demonstrated his love for the Isoko people by approving the establishment of the Delta State College of Health Technology in Ovrode.
When okada (motorcycle) and Keke (tricycle) riders went on protest recently, the apostles of doom sought in vain to project the Governor as weak and unable to maintain law and order. A lynch mob also sought to goad the state Chief Executive to descend harshly on the protesters, mainly because most them were from the northern part of Nigeria.
But the former Speaker shunned bigotry and initiated policies that restored order. Mechanisms has also been put in place to regulate the activities of the Keke and okada riders as well as other artisans, particularly in the urban areas, where they had become a menace in the past.
Following the unfortunate killing of 17 Officers and Solders in Okuama in Ughelli South Local Government and the consequent reprisal attack on the community, a deluge of outright lies and innuendoes were spewed in the social media and other high places. The aim was to smear Oborevwori and his less than one year administration.
On one hand, attempts were made to portray the incident as a clash between Okoloba, an Ijaw enclave and Okuama, which is Urhobo. Advocates of this narrative sought to pitch the Ijaw against the Urhobo, to generate an ethnic crisis. This was more so because the Governor is from the mainly Urhobo Central Senatorial District of the state.
However, more worrisome was the puerile attempt to get Oborevwori to confront the military for invading Okuama. Some even argued that the rights of the Okuama people was more important than the soldiers who for them died as part of their sworn duty to pay the supreme price in service of the nation.
Until His Royal Majesty, Clement Ikolo, the Ovie of Ewu, was released by the military high command on alleged suspicion of complicity in the Okuama incident, the Governor was blamed by these naysayers for allowing the King to be detained in the first place. The fact that the king willingly surrendered to the police after being declared wanted by the Army made matters worse. “Why should Sheriff allow the military to detain the King even for a day?”, they asked.
As it turned out, His Majesty was the first to acknowledge the role played by Oborevwori during his travail. He has since visited the Government House in Asaba to express appreciation for the show of love and solidarity by the Governor.
With the setting up of a camp for displaced persons (IDPs) and provision of palliatives for victims, most critics of Oborevwori’s style have become mute and are daily coming to the reality that the man truly cares and determined to be Governor for all.
Yet, there is nothing to suggest that the apostles of Goebbels’ philosophy are willing to cease their illusory pursuit of doom for administration. Neither will the former Speaker, like the Trojan Horse, fail in excelling in a hale of dust as the captain of a triumphant orchestra. The die is cast.

Babafemi said a 75-year-old grandpa, Jibril Audu was last Friday arrested with 7.5 kilogrammes of cannabis at Oke-Asa village, Ijero-Ekiti, Ekiti state during a raid operation, while a 70-year-old grandma, Tikwase Nytor was nabbed with 15.6 kilogrammes of same substance on last Thursday during a raid operation at Achusa and International Market road, Makurdi, Benue state.
He noted that the NDLEA commands across the country balanced their drug supply reduction operations with War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) advocacy campaigns to schools, markets, worship centres and communities.
Meanwhile, while commending the efforts of the Lagos, Edo, Ekiti, Benue and Adamawa commands of the agency for jobs well done in the past week, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Retd) assured that officers and men of the agency will continue to work with local and international partners to ensure that the scourge of substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking is brought to the barest minimum in Nigeria.
The Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa has commended the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, for their innumerable philanthropic works to society, especially for injured, sick and traumatised soldiers and war veterans.
She gave the commendatio at the welcome banquet held in their honour by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, in Abuja.
The NiDCOM Chairman/CEO stated that the kind gesture from them will empower the wounded soldiers, who have sacrificed their lives to protect the country.
“The initiative for the proposal to cite the Invictus Centre in Nigeria to support the categories of soldiers mentioned above is not only laudable but also a testament of our commitment as a country to look after those who have suffered in one way or the other in the line of duty to protect our nation”, she said.
The NiDCOM boss added that this visit would also boost Nigeria’s quest and interest to host the Invictus Games 2027 and enhance the proposal to cite the Invictus Centre in Nigeria in support of the wounded, injured and sick war veterans, among others.
In addition, Dabiri-Erewa who learnt that Meghan Markle is 43 percent Nigerian after having her genealogy (DNA) done in 2022, commended the Duchess for being an embodiment of the Nigerian woman and her activities towards women and girl-child empowerment. She used the opportunity to welcome the Duchess to Nigeria and extended an invitation to attend the Annual Badagry Door of Return Festival in Lagos.
Prince Harry, who is the founder of the Invictus Games Foundation stated that in the 10 years of the Invictus Games, one remarkable moment was to have the Nigerian team win gold and bronze medals at their first outing in the 2023 games held in Düsseldorf, Germany.
He expressed his pleasure at Nigeria joining the Invictus Games and hoped to witness more participation.
Also, the Duke of Sussex is certain that the proposed Invictus Games Centre in Nigeria will bring succour to the injured, sick and traumatised army men and women.
The Duke, who served as a member of the Royal Armed Forces in the UK, assured his commitment in collaborating with the Nigerian Armed Forces, especially with the Centre in Nigeria, which he is enthusiastic about.
He further appreciated the warm hospitality he and his wife had received since their arrival to Nigeria, while calling on everyone to support and respect the Armed Forces, especially the injured soldiers.
The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar was delighted that such a facility will be built in the country adding that this gesture is apt, given the sacrifices the soldiers have made to defend the country.
Also, Major General Uche Agbor representing the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, said that the Nigerian Army will continually cater to the welfare of its soldiers, especially post-war and injured ones.
He thanked the royal couple for choosing Nigeria to build a centre during this historic visit, which he believes will rehabilitate the victims to become the best versions of themselves, irrespective of the present challenge facing them.
In addition, Hajia Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, wife of the Minister of Budget and Planning, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu said she is pleased at their visit to help the wounded soldiers.
Bagudu who is an advocate for girl-child education, as well as, cancer patients, especially for women, noted that this will go a long way to give hope to the army personnels who were injured in their line of duty.
Furthermore, the Chief of tDefence Staff added that Nigeria was well represented at its first participation at the Invictus Games last year where the players who despite all odds, excelled greatly, showing that limitation is of the mind, and everyone can be great in whatever field they find themselves.
Some of the major highlights were the gift presentations of African attire by Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, and another by the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) in conjunction with the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA) to the Duke and Duchess.
The royal couple arrived in Nigeria on Friday, at the invitation of General Christopher Gwabin Musa, following the nation’s maiden appearance at the 2023 Invictus Games, held in Düsseldorf, Germany.
The Invictus Games Foundation “offers a recovery pathway for international wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women (WIS)”. The Foundation “collaborates to provide opportunities for post-traumatic growth: enabling those involved to reclaim their purpose, identity and future, beyond injury”.
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) on Friday disclosed that the National Identity Number (NIN) has reached 107.338,044, showing a growth of 3.2 million from the 104 million reported as at the end of last year.
The Commission also announced ongoing plans to introduce a general multipurpose NIN card for which Nigerians will be required to pay.
Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja, the Director General of the Commission, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, equally disclosed that in addition to the surge in enrollment, the Commission is not resting on its oars as it would stop at nothing to ensure every Nigerian was registered.
She revealed that the commission is revamping its systems, implementing cutting-edge technologies to upgrade its outdated equipments, and cracking down on fraudsters and extortionists.
She said with the continuous expansion of enrollment centres across the country, the Commission would be in a position to record total registration of Nigerians.
Coker-Odusote noted that in the next six to eight months, the system which capacity presently stands at 100 million would be upgraded to 250 million.
She further mentioned that the Commission intends to review the prices for its services to improve service delivery to Nigerians, noting that the Commission would prosecute any staff members caught conniving with illegal actors.
She said: “All we are trying to do is to ensure that we provide a robust service for Nigerian citizens and legal residents. And to ensure that life is easy and seamless. One should not spend three to four hours in the NIMC office because of NIN services. It is something I will not allow to continue to happen. We will provide all necessary means to address the issue.
“We are clamping down extortioners parading themselves as NIMC staff. A lot of people have lost their money to extortioners.
“Any staff of NIMC that tries to work with illegal perpetrators will face disciplinary committee and be tried according to the Cybercrime Act 2015 and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023. Same with any illegal perpetrators.
“We will make sure we create proper communication to gauge against extortioners.
“We are going to review our rate. It is not going to be much, but it will be reviewed. We have not reviewed our rate for a long time. It is not going to be exorbitant”.
She explained that Nigerians would have to pay a certain amount of money to access the new general multipurpose national identity card through financial institutions in the country, saying the card would allow them access to different digital services and enhance financial inclusion.
“Just like how you pay to access your ATM cards in the banks, Nigerians will pay through the banks to access their cards within 48 hours. We are partnering with Afrigo to ensure seamless delivery of cards to citizens after payment to get the digital multipurpose card,” She said.
She said applicants for the card will have to request with their NIN through a self-service online portal or the banks, insisting that NIN registration remains free for citizens of the country.
She further explained that NIMC is collaborating with the Students Loan Board, NYSC, and other government institutions responsible for palliatives distribution will soon start using NIMC identity database for services of government to ensure accountability and eliminate ghost beneficiaries.
She said states like Jigawa, Lagos, Kaduna, and Delta among others are currently acting as Front End Partners with NIMC for registration of their citizens in the national identity database and enjoined the media to support efforts of the Commission by raising awareness among the citizenry.
The attention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Delta State has been drawn to the rant of one Zik Gbemre wherein he singled out His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori, the Governor of Delta State as the object of his butt.
The party in a statement signed by the State Secretary, Engr. Dan Ossai said: “It would not have dignified the unnecessary attack with a response but for the fact that it made reference to the party, which fielded and worked hard during the campaigns leading to Deltans giving their overwhelming votes to the PDP candidate who today is the Governor.
“For us in the PDP, we liken Zik Gbemre’s diatribe to the rage of the heathen which the Holy Bible describes clearly in Psalm 2, asking derisively, why are people plotting a vain thing, setting themselves and political kingpins taking counsel together against the LORD and His Anointed.”
Delta PDP notes the untoward nature of the write up titled: “OKUAMA IDP’s (sic) CAMP: ANOTHER SHAME OF A VILLAGE CHAMPION GOVERNOR,” and in particular, the ill-mannered, ill-bred, discourteous and impolite language used on the person of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori by Zik Gbemre, who, once again exposed his garullous penchant as an irreverent fellow that lacks the rules of acceptable behaviour.
While we refuse to waste time time by dignifying him and his sponsors with a rejoinder knowing that it is obvious from his mindset that he failed to give proper consideration to the possible consequences of what he wrote on, it is important nevertheless, to clear a few incongruences in his ill-tempered offering.
First, he is not in government and so is not capable of appreciating the intricacies involved in the Okuama matter. But we know that President Bola Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, who Governor Sheriff Oborevwori visited to intimate him about the Okuama situation, knows and understands.
Therefore, we do not think that a dyed-in-wool disgruntled fellow and his shallow minded analysis deserves any rejoinder and we commend the administration of Governor Oborevwori for remaining focused with the committed underground moves being made to restore normalcy to the Okuama community and not pandering to the distractions being weaved by devious elements who constitute themselves as sworn enemies of the Governor.
Indeed the moves yielded very superlative dividends with the recent announcement by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori himself, that the Nigerian Army has finally agreed to withdraw from Okuama.
Below is an excerpt of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s announcement for the information and education of Zik Gbemre:
“My Dear Good People of Delta State, I have the pleasure to announce to you that, upon many deliberations and collaborations between the State Government and the Military Leadership, the Nigerian Army has agreed to withdraw its Officers and Men from Okuama.
“I spoke with the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja on Monday, 6th of May, and as at today, 8th of May, 2024, the Military have withdrawn from Okuama.
“With this development, the people of Okuama can now safely return to their homes and begin the process of reintegration and rebuilding their homes.
“I want to express my deep and profound gratitude to Mr. President, the Chief of Army Staff, and the hierarchy of the Nigerian Army for their understanding and cooperation.
“In my engagements with them, they demonstrated the highest level of concern and care for the plight of the displaced persons. To God be the glory that we have achieved an amicable resolution,” Governor Oborevwori disclosed.
We will of course not be drawn into engaging the silly and spurious innuendos over the academic status and qualifications of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, which made the rounds prior to the general election and upon which the likes of Zik Gbemre continue to lean on as a wobbly crutch to balm their thoroughly bashed post-election egos.
Suffice it however, to repeat for emphasis, especially for those who may have been taken in by the acrimonious posturing and malicious invective, that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori holds a Masters’ Degree in Political Science from a renowned Nigerian university and has attended many courses in highly rated Ivory Towers Overseas.
Besides, not only are members of his cabinet brilliant and well read fellows in their respective areas of study, the cabinet is a blend of the young and old, with gender sensitivity.
So far, they are doing well and we in PDP and other right thinking Deltans have refused to be swayed by viscious gossips and improper use of the social media to attack with a view to bringing down our beloved Governor.
We will thus restrain from stooping so low and be petty as to challenge Zik Gbemre and his sponsors to display their own academic qualifications side by side those of members of the Oborevwori cabinet, for objective comparisons.
But we must in good conscience, point out that Gbemre and his cohorts, out of mischief, are feigning not to observe the great work that is going on by Julius Berger in Warri, courtesy of the N78 billion contract awarded by the Oborevwori Administration, to give the oil city and environs a face lift.
They are also blind to the many projects that the Governor is doing, especially in the unwavering determination to complete on-going projects inherited by his administration, thus putting paid to the syndrome of uncompleted and abandoned projects.
So far the health institutions of the State are working, the Primary, Secondary and Tertiary institutions are all in top forms; 2,000 school teachers were employed across the State; civil servants are paid as at when due, with pensioners enjoying their pensions. In addition, the roads construction work going on across the State has turned Delta into a huge construction site.
But Zik Gbemre, beclouded by mischief has bluntly and deliberately refused to take cognisance of all these and many more.
The Governor did not just emerge; he contested the primary election against his opponents and defeated them in a free, fair, credible and transparent election conducted openly, to become the PDP candidate.
We are glad to have sponsored him to fly the PDP party flag in Delta State gubernatorial election. He went ahead to win the statewide governorship polls and went through 38 intense court cases, which culminated in his resounding victory at the Supreme Court.
We will let Deltans judge how Zik Gbemre described fellow Deltans, decent compatriots for that matter as “dried woods”. For Zik Gbemre, being in government should be the exclusive preserve of people like him and his sponsors. Talk of unbridled display of arrogance.
Yet, Deltans know better that “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from above (John 3:27). Most of the things that count with us as human beings don’t count with God.
This is why Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori fits the bill from God’s own perspective and God honoured him with the Governorship of Delta State.
Thank you Deltans for ignoring this infantile attack and for keeping faith with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and PDP in Delta State.
PDP – Power to the people
Signed:
Engr. Dan Ossai, State Secretary, PDP, Delta State.
In the intricate landscape of Edo State politics, recent events have thrust the suspension of two esteemed Enigies, Prof Gregory Akenzua and Chief Edomwonyi Ogiegbaen, into the spotlight once more. Their suspension by the monarch of the Benin Kingdom, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, has sparked legal challenges and raised pertinent questions about governance, authority, and political dynamics within the state. The suspension of Prof. Gregory Akenzua and Chief Edomwonyi Ogiegbaen stemmed from their alleged involvement in leading a delegation to the Governor with the aim of restructuring the traditional councils within the Benin Kingdom. This moves incited backlash from community elders and ultimately led to their suspension by the Benin Palace. The assertion by the Enigies that only Governor Godwin Obaseki possesses the authority to remove them from their offices has triggered a legal battle, highlighting a chapter in Edo’s political history that will likely endure in collective memory. While the Edo State Government officially distances itself from involvement in the legal proceedings against the revered Oba of Benin, rumors on social media speculate about potential support from Governor Obaseki for the Enigies’ cause. However, these speculations have been vehemently dismissed as the work of malicious elements with ulterior motives by the government’s spokesperson. The underlying question persists: if Governor Obaseki is not supporting the Enigies, why do they maintain that only him has the power to suspend them? Furthermore, why has the governor refrained from publicly condemning their actions, particularly their claim of being dispatched from the Palace during their visit to Ife? Again, on several occasions, Governor Obaseki have been seen winning and dining with the suspended Enigies Governor Obaseki’s decision to distance himself from the legal proceedings against the Oba of Benin presents a challenging stance. The complexities of Edo’s political landscape suggest that this case will continue to attract scrutiny, shedding light on the intricate power dynamics within the state. Governor Obaseki’s administration withheld statutory allocations to Edo traditional institutions amid the controversy, citing unresolved administrative issues between the government and the Benin Palace. However, the subsequent disbursement of these funds separately to the Benin Traditional Council and other newly created traditional councils across Edo South LGAs raised eyebrows and fueled speculation. The decision by the Edo State Executive Council to create traditional councils especially in Edo South Senatorial District further exacerbated tensions, leading to legal challenges from the Benin Enigies. The ongoing legal dispute underscores broader questions about governance and political allegiances within the state. The matter concerning the repatriation of artifacts presents another aspect in which Governor Obaseki’s actions have been subject to criticism. It is widely acknowledged that Governor Obaseki enlisted the services of undisclosed consultants without the prior knowledge of the Oba. In doing so, the governor deviated from the agreed-upon strategy established in conjunction with the Palace, of which he was initially a participant. In response to the Palace’s reservations regarding Governor Obaseki’s unilateral approach, characterized as “hasty,” the governor proceeded to mobilize his Chiefs to explore alternative avenues for asserting the Benin Kingdom’s claim to its ancient treasures. In conclusion, the unfolding events in Edo State underscore the delicate balance between governance, tradition, and political realities. In navigating these intricate power dynamics, Governor Obaseki faces the challenge of balancing governance, tradition, and political realities. While Governor Obaseki’s designated candidate for the forthcoming September 2024 Gubernatorial election, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, and Osarodion Ogie Campaign Council the Campaign Council have formally articulated their stance, expressing profound disapproval towards any actions perceived as disrespectful towards the esteemed person of Oba Ewuare II and the revered Royal throne of the Great Palace, the ongoing legal dispute underscores the need for careful consideration of historical precedent, legal frameworks, and the aspirations of the people of Edo State. As the situation unfolds, it remains essential to monitor its implications on the political landscape.

The food items is to cushion the impact of the current economic down turn in line with the renewed hope of President Bola Tinubu.
The Secretary to State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu who received the food items on behalf of the State Government, thanked President Tinubu for the bold step and promised to deliver it to the vulnerable groups.
Dr Emu who said the items were not enough to take care of the identified beneficiaries, disclosed that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has taken proactive steps to ameliorate the plight of Deltans since fuel subsidy was removed by Mr President on May 29, 2023.
He said over N5.6billion was paid to clear promotion arrears owed civil servants, over 2,000 teaching and non teaching staff were employed in schools, capacity development was organised for different cadres of workers in the state civil service, N1 billion for artisans and many other proactive steps.
”We thank the President for this generous gesture even though is insufficient to Nigerians, shows that he is compassionate. It is a short term measure and we are convinced that we have medium to long term interventions.
”So on behalf of the governor of Delta state, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori we like to welcome you to our state. As a state, we have done very many interventions that have touched the lives of our people because that’s what His Excellency is on oath to do as a social contract to the people.
”We paid in excess of N5.65 Billion to our esteemed civil servants as promotion arrears and recruited over 2,000 workers in our local government Areas.

”We as a committee have zero tolerance for manipulation. So we want to assure you that we will do our very best. Tell the DG when you go back that you saw a good template in Delta State, if possible, you can come and copy it”.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has commended Nigeria for taking the issues of climate change seriously, noting that among the 15 member countries of the regional economic bloc, Nigeria alongside Benin and The Gambia are the three counties to have submitted their Strategy to the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Speaking at the National Workshop on Socialization of Nigeria’s Long-Term Low Carbon Emission Development Strategy (LT-LEDS).in Abuja, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, Mrs. Massandjé Toure-Litse said: “As part of the Paris Agreement, ECOWAS Member States have all submitted their revised Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), the implementation of which calls for the mobilisation of all national actors in each country and the support of regional and international partners.
“Alongside these NDCs, countries are called upon to develop their long-term low- carbon emission development Strategy. To date, out of the 15 ECOWAS Member States, only three (3) countries (Benin, The Gambia, and Nigeria) have submitted their Strategy to the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. I would like to commend the Federal Republic of Nigeria for submitting this important document to fulfill its obligations under the Paris Agreement.”
Toure-Litse, who was represented by one of the Commission’s Director, Kofi Bernard noted that: “This achievement is in line with the declaration of the ECOWAS Head of States and Government adopted on Climate Change in December 2021, which also calls on Member States to develop their Long-term low-carbon emission development Strategy.”
She said: “The Commission is delighted to support the socialization of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s long-term low emission development strategy for the socialization with a view to ensuring better ownership and effective contribution of all national stakeholders in its implementation.”
On his part, the Director General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), Dr. Salisu Dahiru said: “The LT LEDS is comprehensive and serves as a vehicle for transitioning Nigeria to its Net-zero Pathway by 2060. In particular, it identifies actionable programmes and policies that aim to accelerate the uptake of measures and technologies in and around a climate-resilient development pathway while working towards long-term quantifiable GHG emission reductions across Nigeria’s priority sectors.”
He said: “In November 2021, Nigeria passed the Climate Change Act that seeks to achieve low greenhouse gas emissions, green and sustainable growth by providing the framework to set a target to reach net zero between 2050 and 2070. With this regulatory framework, the Act established the National Council on Climate Change with the sole responsibility for the coordination and harmonization of national climate actions among several roles.
“The journey to net-zero emissions has thus begun, and it is already clear that the road will be rough. Nigeria’s position is balancing its socioeconomics with climate change initiatives. It is to be noted also that in order to mobilize adequate climate finance into the country, there is need for adequate regulatory frameworks and its implementation.”
He noted that: “Today, we have come together to socialize and present this decisive strategy, and so we have the opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogues, share insights, and build partnerships that will drive the successful implementation of the LT-LEDS. This workshop will serve as a catalyst for change, a space for learning, and a forum for collective action, as we strive to shape a future where Nigeria thrives as a global leader in low-emission development and climate resilience.”
He said: “The demonstrated leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in ensuring the reduction of Nigeria’s carbon footprint can be seen in the launch of several initiatives such as the Electric Buses Rollout Programme, the Carbon Market Activation Programme etc.. The present administration is providing all the necessary support to implement robust, enabling policies and frameworks.”
…Says resigned Commissioners were sabotaging his government
Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara has declared the Martin Amaewhule-led House of Assembly as floating and non existent and as such has no valid potency to take binding legislative decisions on the state following their defection.
The Governor disclosed this while addressing a delegation of Traditional Rulers and opinion leaders from Bayelsa state, led by Senator Seriake Dickson, former governor of the state, who paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House, Port Harcourt on Monday.
The governor pointed out that he accepted the presidential peace accord to keep them floating as the agreement has no constitutional basis but a political solution to a problem.
“I accepted it because these were people that have eaten in my house and I have assisted pay their children school fee even when I have not become the governor.”
“We may have our disagreement, but I believe that one day we could also come together, that was the reason I did it, but it was time I made a statement on this so that they understand that they are not existing.”
Sir Fubara said he made more sacrifices in the course of the crisis to ensure peace, adding that even with the peace deal his supporters are being harassed and intimidated with arrest everyday, but he has continued to show restraint as a mature leader realizing that there can be no meaningful development in an atmosphere of rancour.
“And because our intentions for Rivers State is to build on the foundation laid by our past leaders, it will be wrong for me to take the path of crisis. And that is why we are still seeing and recording the development that you are witnessing in the state.”
Governor Fubara while acknowledging the gains of his visit to the governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri sometime ago revealed that he was working virtually with enemies in his cabinet as commissioners including his Attorney-General who resigned recently were sabotaging his administration, stressing that most information being hidden from him was given to him by Gov. Diri.
The governor who thanked the Bayelsa leaders for their show of solidarity and interest in the affairs of Rivers State, assured that his administration will continue to promote the cordial relationship between the two sister states which has yielded positive results on his administration.
“There is no complete Rivers State without Bayelsa, and there’s no complete Bayelsa without Rivers State. We were separated because of political purposes to expand development, there is no need for argument over assets. Any good development in Bayelsa affects Rivers State, we have very wonderful cordial relationship.”
He assured that he will continue to act in a manner to make the people proud and work for the good of the state in order to leave an enduring legacy that posterity will be kind to him.
Speaking earlier, the leader of the delegation and former governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Seriake Dickson has stated that the visit was to convey the goodwill and solidarity of the people of Bayelsa state, that of foremost Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark to the Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof Mrs Ngozi Odu over their successful emergence as the leaders of the state at this particular time and on their Supreme Court victory.
Senator Dickson who commended Rivers people for their choice of Governor Fubara as their Governor and the overwhelming support given to his administration, said they were concerned about the disturbing political situation in Rivers State and called for peaceful resolution of the political crisis by all parties involved.
He pointed out that Rivers and Bayelsa states enjoyed an inseparable, cultural, historical and political bond which has to be built upon to promote mutual coexistence between the two states, and urged Governor Fubara to continue to work with his Bayelsa counterpart, Governor Douye Diri to achieve common objectives devoid of division.
Ahead of the forthcoming local government elections in Delta State, a retired /Director of Veterinary Services in the state, Dr. Augustine Ojogbo has formally declared interest in contesting for the Aniocha North Local Government Chairmanship position under the Labour Party (LP).
Ojogbo, a native of Idumeje-Unor in the local government area, made the declaration during a meeting with stakeholders at the LP’s Secretariat in Issele-Uku.
Addressing the party members, he said, “I am a seasoned technocrat with vast skills, knowledge, and experience to bring the most desired and deserved dividends of democracy to the citizenry of Aniocha North LGA.
His words, I want to deliver the most desired and deserved dividends of democracy to the citizenry of Aniocha North LGA, I have a well-articulated and all-encompassing five point Agenda (Mantra) known as AWELE.
” I seek your unalloyed support in this journey to becoming the Chairman as I sincerely express my interest”.
He noted that his mission and vision was to build and maintain a thriving local government area that was safe and secure for all residents by creating an inclusive environment and also ensuring economically viable and culturally-oriented communities, where people can live, work, and recreate under a secure environment.
Responding, Aniocha North Labour Party Chairman, Mr.Onyebuchi Oshukwudo, welcomed him and assured him oftransparent treatment to all the party’s local government chairmanship aspirants.
Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has said that the pressure mounted by the political crisis has been weathered sufficiently, giving way for his Administration to provide focused leadership and governance to the people of the State.
Governor Fubara made the assertion when he hosted on courtesy visit, members of the House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions, led by its Chairman, Hon. Mike Etaba, at Government House in Port Harcourt on Saturday night.
The Governor declared that as long as his Administration and Rivers people he is leading are concerned, there is no more political issue of note.
Making reference to a movie he had seen long time ago, Governor Fubara explained how the pressure from the unwarranted political crisis served as an enabler to strengthen his commitment to service that is now impacting lives positively.
He said, “As far as we are concerned, there are no political issues. I had seen a movie many years ago, entitled, ‘Devil’s Advocate.’ I believe some of you must have seen that movie too.
“One of the starring characters: Al Pacino said, pressure makes some people retreat or fail, and to others, it makes them to become focused to succeed. We have chosen to be focused under this pressure.
“That is why we are moving ahead. That is why we are making positive impact in the lives of our people. Governance is about the people. It is not about self.
“Governance is about touching the core needs of those people we are leading, and by the special grace of God, we are doing it.”
Governor Fubara pointed to the empowerment of about 3,066 Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) when he flagged-off the N4billion single digit loan scheme in conjunction with the Bank of Industry (BOI) Limited on Friday, as one way his Administration is improving the socio-economic dynamics of the State.
“Yesterday, by the special grace of God, we observed the credit line of over 3,066 persons empowered. You can imagine what that will do for the economy of the masses and the State.
“That is touching the lives of our people. It is not supporting them for selfish reasons. It is not giving contract because I want somebody to fight somebody in my community. No. This is empowering the economy of the masses and the State.
“Our focus is that, no matter what anybody is doing anywhere, we are not going to lose focus. We want to leave here better than we had met it. And we want to also leave here without fear of anything.”
Governor Fubara said, it is more desirable for a public leader to relish in the accolades from the majority of the people, who by exploring the conducive climate that is provided, could feed themselves and pay school fees of their children.
The Governor emphatically said: “That is what we want to hear, so that when before our children, our names are mentioned when we are no more, they will say: ‘that man is a good man’.
“We will not oppress anybody. We will not force anybody against their will. We will not intimidate anybody, because intimidation has a time it expires.
“When the time of intimidation expires, even as recorded of Pharaoh in the Bible, who intimidated the children of Israel, but it got to a time that the intimidation no longer worked.
“So, any bad thing that has a beginning, will have an end. So, that is why I said we don’t have any problem. We have put that crisis behind us. We are looking ahead.”
Governor Fubara, who reiterated that Rivers State is peaceful, said it takes a peaceful leader to bring about such aura of peace to the State and its people.
The Governor told his guests to dismiss the negative social media reports that tended to portray the State as a place immersed in uncontrollable violence, and juxtapose it with what they have personally witnessed so that they can be better ambassadors of the State.
“Leadership and respect in leadership is not earned by force. It is your style that brings respect and love. And what we are doing is to respect our people, and in turn, our people are giving us that support for leadership.
“So, I am happy that you are here, and when you go back, tell others your own side of the story: that Rivers State is moving forward. Forget about what you see in the social media, there is progress everywhere here. There is light everywhere.”
Governor Fubara further told the committee members to note that it is normal for people to seek redress when they feel that their right had been trampled upon.
But he advised that when such complains come to them, they should be thorough with their investigation, be fair and make their resolutions devoid of bias.
He said, “Some of these people who write these petitions to you, I can say it, some of them are not even genuine. They believe that it is also a way to extort money from most of these companies that are doing business around us.
“So, I will urge you to do your investigation properly and let your finding be as a result of proper and diligent investigation,” he added.
Governor Fubara also said: “You mentioned something about the petition against Indorama Petrochemical and Fertiliser Company Limited, we are already aware of it.
“Funny enough, the Indorama’s case was even reported by Indorama itself. It is unfortunate that a particular person who got the privileged information went behind to use that information against the company.
“I just need to let you know that, just in case when you will be treating the case, you could factor this information. Those people can’t come to us because they know we will look at them in the face, and tell them the truth.
“Ordinarily, they ought to have come to us. They need to make the complain first to the State Ministry of Environment before going ahead.
“So, you can see the kind of society that we find ourselves. But, God has placed you in this position today. It is for a purpose. So, use it to defend the oppressed people possibly in the course of justice. Defend them. Defend what is right. When it is wrong, say it with boldness,” the Governor added.
In his address, the leader of the delegation and Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions, Hon. Mike Etaba, explained that they came into Port Harcourt on the basis of a petition that is before the House and referred to the Committee.
He mentioned the petitioner as “Bridge Gap Initiative”, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), in respect to some of the companies operating in the Trans-Amadi Industrial Layout of Rivers State.
He said, “These companies are Schlumberger, Halliburton, Coca Cola and International Breweries. We have met with these companies that were able to oblige us their time.
“We went round to look at the issues that made us to come, especially the pollution of the water around Oginigba River. The companies were accused of discharging dangerous effluent into the river, and also polluting the environment. That is the reason we came, and we have finished our assignment.”
Hon. Etaba used the opportunity to commend Governor Fubara on how he had handled the political crisis that erupted in the State, praising him for not allowing it degenerate into violent physical clashes.
He said, “Because you see, the battle of leadership comes from God Almighty. Nobody gives power. Power comes from God. If God uses any man to give you power, and that man arrogates power to himself, that man will be doing himself a disservice.
“So far, you have carried yourself as a man that has wisdom, dignity, and you are doing well. Your Excellency, don’t be distracted, what you owe dearly is to hold unto God strongly.
The Lord is your strength, and you will succeed in every decision that you take. Ask Him for wisdom, He will direct you,” he added.
He pledged the committee’s support, and urged all people of goodwill in the State to rally support and remain strong in their tenacious loyalty to the Governor to enable him succeed in delivering good governance and quality leadership to Rivers people.

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has frowned at the nonchalance with which the contractor handling the Bori Internal Roads project had approached the work after more than 80 per cent of the agreed contractual terms had been paid.
The Governor, who said the contractor’s approach was unacceptable, ordered him to return to site and complete the project, or face severe consequences.
Governor Fubara gave the order when he visited the project site in Bori Town, headquarters of Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State on Saturday.
A statement signed by Nelson Chukwudi, Chief Press Secretary to the Rivers State Governor and made available to Blank NEWS Online on Saturday, May 4, 2024, reads:
The Governor explained: “This project was awarded before my assumption of office. But I have made two payments for this project. The total value of this project is over N6billion.
“In the month of June, 2023, I paid the first N2billion, and in December, 2023, I also released another N2billion, making about 80 percent of the project value.
“So, I am surprised that somebody will say that we are not interested in completing this project that is in my Senatorial District,” the Governor said.
Governor Fubara said it is even more worrisome that after those payments were made, the contractor refused to move men and equipment to site.
The Governor pointed to a very disturbing incident where the contractor sacked his front desk officer for receiving a letter sent by the Ministry of Works to demand for an update on the Bori internal roads project.
“I came here this afternoon to inspect the Bori internal roads under construction. And, honestly speaking, my major reason of coming here is because we got a very disturbing propaganda.
“Some persons were circulating negative reports on social media that we deliberately abandoned the continuation of Bori Internal Roads project. Maybe, the persons have political reason.
“It is very unfortunate that everytime we find ourselves in this kind of situation. So, my coming here today is to let the world know of the situation.
“I don’t want to mention the name of the contractor, let it not be that I am being personal. But the contractor knows himself.
“He should better go back to site or I will do something that will embarrass him as a person,” he added.
The Governor also assured the residents of the area who came out in their numbers to cheer him, singing his praises, that the road will be completed to ease movement of the people.
He said, “I can assure you that this road project will be completed. You are my people, and there is no way I can abandon a project designed to serve my people, and give them a sense of belonging. So, be rest assured that this road will be completed for your use,” the Governor added.

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have smashed an international drug syndicate with networks in parts of Nigeria, South Africa and Thailand.
According to a statement on Sunday by the spokesman of the anti-narcotics agency, Femi Babafemi, no fewer than five members of the cartel were arrested in a two-weeks intelligence led operations in Lagos, Abia and Anambra states following the seizure of their illicit drug consignments at the NAHCO import shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

A Ukrainian company, EDS, has started the move to invest in Nigerian energy sector.
The Director of the company, Zapyshynyi Olexandr, addressing a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, said the company was already mapping out strategies on how to go about the project.
Olexandr while noting that the project will combine solar, wind and hydro energies, said it will begin in the FCT and Lagos before cascading to other states.
He said: “We are looking at mini-grids because we realised that that is where the energy problem is in Nigeria.”
He revealed that: “How successful the first project is will determine how much investment we will bring in.”
He said Nigeria should expect more investments from Ukraine, for the country is moving towards investing in Africa.
Olexandr said the President of Ukraine has given the go ahead for Ukrainian companies to invest in Africa.
Also speaking at the press conference, President of the Ukraine-Nigeria Business Council, Ben Gbade Ojo, said: “Today, we are pleased to present to Nigerians the EDS Ukraine Power and Engineering, a Ukrainian company that has all it takes to turn around the electric power fortunes of Nigeria and help transform Nigeria into a power-efficient nation.
“We welcome the EDS to Nigeria and urge all Nigerians to take advantage of their immense capabilities for sustainable power sector efficiency in Nigeria.”
He said the prime objective of this press conference was to avail the government and Nigerians of the vast opportunities available for the sustainable development and maximal performance of Nigeria’s troubled electric power sector, through a partnership with the people of the Republic of Ukraine.
The Electricity Act of 2023, signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari in March 2023, and the Amended Act, signed into law this year by President Bola Tinubu permit private participation across all levels of the electricity supply chain, provided such private entities obtain the appropriate licence (s).
Based on the amendment, Nigerians can now participate in the electricity supply business, which was previously the exclusive preserve of the federal government, as administered by the sector regulator, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission. (NERC).
With the constitution amended, and the National Assembly having passed a law for the electricity sector in line with the amendment and having become an Act, the states will now proceed to establish their power sector laws and regulations.
The 2023 Electricity Act, by virtue, allows anyone to construct, own, or operate a business for generating electricity exceeding one megawatt in aggregate at a site.
Ojo also said the Ukrainian-Nigerian Business Council had fully mobilised to help the federal and state governments and all-electric power sector players and stakeholders benefit maximally from this revolutionary Electricity Power Act.
