Pyrates Confraternity Calls for Re-engineering of Nigerian Foreign Mission for Optimal Performance

0

The National Association of Seadogs (NAS) otherwise known as Pyrates Confraternity has called for the re-engineering of Nigerian foreign missions fir optimal performance.

The body, in Abuja on Friday listed some of the factors responsible for the underperformance to include inadequate budgetary provision, corruption, low competence among Nigerian diplomatic staff, inadequate staff strength, the politicisation of foreign service, the appointment of non-professionals or political diplomats and lack of synergy between the diplomatic missions and the headquarters, among others.

In a research document unveiled in Abuja and titled ‘State of Nigerian Embassies and Consulates,’ NAS said the issue of Nigerian embassies has continued to be a source of concern to Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora, and equally friends of Nigeria who are embarrassed by all manners of stories about the situation and services at the embassies.

In the executive summary, the association further said it decided to commission a study to determine the actual condition of the embassies and consulates through the #OurVotesCount initiative.

It said the method of study involved site visitation to the embassies and consulates, desktop review and analysis of 358 respondents from a cross-sectional survey.

“The survey was designed to ascertain the experiences and provided perceptions of Nigerians and non Nigerians who use the services at the embassies and consulates. Nigeria currently has 219 missions abroad, but the initial target of the study was 94 embassies and 12 consulates. The following embassies or consulates were informed of the study’s objectives: the Embassy of Nigeria, Washington DC, Consulates in Atlanta, and New York, Embassies of Nigeria in The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Ireland, Japan, and Australia. The Nigerian High Commissions in Ottawa, London and Consular Affairs Annex, London; Pretoria and the Consulate in Johannesburg.

According to the report: “The importance of a country’s missions abroad cannot be overemphasised because sometimes, how they are perceived serve as a Measure of the prestige of a nation. Moreover, there is a nexus between a country’s mission, the pursuance of its national interests, and the implementation of its foreign policies. In essence, a nation’s diplomatic mission abroad plays an important role.

“The general perception is that Nigerian missions are not living up to the expectations of Nigerians and foreigners who use the services they provide. This study highlights inadequate budgetary provision, corruption, low competence among Nigerian diplomatic staff, inadequate staff strength, the politicisation of foreign service, the appointment of non-professionals or political diplomats and lack of synergy between the diplomatic missions and the headquarters, as some of the issues hindering the optimal service delivery of the embassies. In addition, the general impression is that the staff show some apathetic attitude towards the plights of Nigerians.”

The National Association of Seadogs however said the situation was not all gloom, insisting: “There are limited instances where embassy staff were reported to have been very professional, friendly, and courteous. There is an enthusiastic Nigerian atmosphere a sound queuing system, observing COVID-19 protocol, timely service, and efficiency in some cases,” but lamented that: “Unfortunately, these situations as observed, were few rather than the norm. The survey respondents’ perceptions about services received showed that only 20 percent of respondents were satisfied with services received at the embassy, 22 percent were neutral, and 58 percent were dissatisfied. The physical infrastructure/presentation of the Nigerian embassy was considered excellent/good by about 7 percent of respondents. In comparison, 66 percent believed the infrastructure/presentation was poor. and 27 percent felt the infrastructure/presentation was average.

“The attitude of the staff was considered satisfactory by approximately only one (1) in every five (5) respondents, while 56 percent believed the attitude of staff was not satisfactory and 25 percent were neutral.

However, about 31 percent of respondents indicated that they have had to pay non-official fees compared to 67 percent that did not pay any non-official fees. The reason for the payment includes expediting passport renewal, securing an appointment, payment to an agent or Nigerian association to facilitate service, and making photocopies at the embassy,” the National Association of Seadogs noted in the report.

In its recommendations, the National Association of Seadogs called for the establishment of a special trust fund for the acquisition, equipment, and maintenance of Nigerian embassies and consulates, with at least 20 percent of revenues generated from consular services domiciled in it. is long overdue.

This, the association stated, will help to reduce the over dependence on the annual national budget.

The association also called for the increment in budgetary allocation towards the acquisition of befitting embassies and consulate buildings and maintenance of existing infrastructure in Nigeria’s foreign missions is imperative and timely.

Amongst others, the research advocated for the removal of the quota system in the employment of embassy and consulate staff, saying that employment in that area should be strictly based on merit.

HURIWA Names NDLEA Boss, Buba Marwa Man of The Year

0

The leading and foremost civil rights advocacy group; the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has named the Executive Chairman of the Nigerian Drugs Law and Enforcement Agency (NDLEA); Buba Marwa the Human Rights Man of the Year for 2022

HURIWA in a statement in lieu of the December 10 International Human Rights Day described Mohammed Buba Marwa as the most influential Nigerian in 2022, adding that he is one person who has officially and personally affected the news and lives more than any other Nigerian from whatever standpoint one looks at it.

“Several polls conducted have shown a clear consensus that Mohammed Buba Marwa is one Nigerian who has personally and officially affected the news and lives of Nigerians the most in recent times, with his very aggressive but human rights-based approach to drug policy.

“In just 24 months, Marwa has not just earned the image of the protagonist of the most topical human rights and developmental issues but as well distinguished himself as a courageous and insightful leader who understands the urgent need to embrace a multi-dimensional and holistic approach that aims to mitigate the harm done by drug use instead of the retrogressive traditional just-say-no-ism of past Chief Executives”, HURIWA noted.

The statement signed by HURIWA’s National Coordinator; Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko further revealed the many areas, NDLEA has been seen to be blazing the trail in drug law enforcement and how the approach adopted by the Marwa-led administration is winning the confidence of Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora.

Highlighting the innovative approaches adopted by Marwa, HURIWA defined him as a very focused and assiduous person who plans, asserting that his tenure as Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Elimination of Drug Abuse (PACEDA), which laid the groundwork for the total overhaul of NDLEA, ensured he arrived at NDLEA with a blueprint.

“Within 24 months, his plans are taking shape and it is obvious to the public that he and his management team are caught in a historic moment and process of rebuilding NDLEA into an institution that will stand the test of time.

“One of the approaches adopted by Marwa is the collaboration with the Nigerian movie industry in the drug war. In his view, millions of young people watching Nigerian movies, even as they admire star actors, will be easily sensitised on the dangers of drug abuse through didactic stories.

“To achieve this, NDLEA opted for the United Nations Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking to release engaging flicks that will aid their work. For the second year in a row, NDLEA has celebrated the UN Special Day with new movies.

“Again, the seizure of a massive crack cocaine haul in September, which was described by the spokesperson of the Agency as “the biggest singular cocaine seizure in the history of Nigeria’s premier anti-narcotic agency,” tells volumes about the new life Marwa has breathed into the agency.

“Also, the arrest, detention, and ongoing prosecution of the highly decorated policeman; DCP Abba Kyari, who seemingly lived a secret life of serial criminality while allegedly fighting crime is the defining initiative of NDLEA under the former military governor’s watch”, HURIWA said.

Continuing, HURIWA informed that Marwa’s NDLEA is making a strong overall impact beyond high-profile cases. A fact-finding mission by HURIWA revealed that 19,341 drug traffickers were arrested between January 2021 and September 31, 2022, in addition to securing 3,111 convictions, and seized 5,451,000kg of illicit drugs within the same period.

More so, cash and drugs worth N420 billion were forfeited to the agency, while cannabis farms of 714 hectares were destroyed within the period under review, just as the group added that the agency is prosecuting over 3,232 cases in court and has also counseled and rehabilitated 12,326 drug addicts within the same time frame.

No doubt, in a country where issues are profoundly politicized and achievements of public officers viewed with distrust and x-rayed for ulterior motives, HURIWA stated that Marwa has proven to be an exception.

“Nigerians both home and in the diaspora from all walks of life, across political divides, from different religious leanings, and of diverse ethnicities, are in one accord in their appraisal of him, his reforms, leadership, and transformation of NDLEA – a testament to the Nigerian dream.

“Discussions about him invariably always narrow down to the question of what makes Marwa tick as a leader. But more than that, he has been revealed as the ideal 21st-century leader who irrespective of extenuating factors, has shown noticeable commitment to democratic ideals and issues of development

“Beyond this, Marwa has continued to advance a pragmatic approach to giving the NDLEA workforce improved work conditions. So far, there have been promotions, payment of allowances, and other constructive developments that give hope to the Agency’s staff.

“Many pundits and the media have termed his tenure so far as different in the annals of the Agency. Within 24 months, his plans are taking shape and it is obvious to the public that he and his management team are caught in a historic moment and process of rebuilding NDLEA into an institution that will stand the test of time”, HURIWA further explained.

Therefore, HURIWA acknowledged that 23 years after leaving the military in his mid-forties, Mohammed Buba Marwa is back in the headlines in a very different role from combatting armed robbery or addressing food contamination to making a high-profile impact in a prominent public position in the nation’s drugs fighting agency – Thus Human Rights Man of The Year for 2022

While informing that the award investiture will be done at a later date before the year ends, HURIWA calls for all stakeholders to support the commitment and will of the Marwa-led administration in helping the Agency continue rising to the challenge of its mandate in eliminating the cultivation, processing, manufacturing, sale, trafficking, and use of illicit drugs and psychotropic substances.

Why We Are Organising Town Hall for Presidential Candidates on Human Rights- NHRC

0

The National National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has explained the reason for organising in collaboration with the United Nations (UN) the first ever Presidential Town Hall on Human Rights to mark the International Human Rights Day.

Speaking at the Second United Nations – Government of Nigeria Human Rights Dialogue in Abuja, the Chairperson of the Governing Council, National Human Rights Commission, Dr. Salamatu Hussaini Suleiman said she was happy thankful to the UN Resident Coordinator and the entire UN Country Team for believing in this partnership with Nigeria and National Human Rights Commission to host this year’s dialogue.

She said: “I am delighted to note that the Human Rights Dialogue which started last year as an initiative of the UN Resident Coordinator’s office representing the UN System and the National Human Rights Commission representing the Government of Nigeria has entered its second year and is poised to become a major convening of policy makers and development partners, shaping the face of partnerships and commitments in the field of human rights in Nigeria.”

She noted that: “This Human Rights Dialogue is coming on the heels of the recently released Multi-Dimensional Poverty Index survey by the National Bureau of Statistics indicating that despite efforts by Government, we are failing in fulfilling most human rights and development obligations that are essential for survival.”

She also said: “The Human Rights Dialogue also follows the recent signing of the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework between the Government of Nigeria and the United Nations. It is my hope that cooperation framework serves as a vehicle to advance partnership to work together for the realisation of all human rights – civil, political, economic, social and cultural for all Nigerians as human rights is integral to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and there can never be development without human rights.”

She however said: “As we approach the 2023 General Elections, the National Human Rights Commission is working with various partners to advocate for issue-based campaigns anchored on the realisation of human rights and an electoral process that is peaceful and guarantees the right to participation of political parties and electorates.

“I cannot emphasise enough about the unique joint mandates of the United Nations and the Commission to serve as independent voices and gate keepers in ensuring that human rights are integrated and sustained in the process leading to the election and even beyond by supporting the next administration to continue to place human rights as a major priority on it political, social and economic agendas.

“It is following this that the both the Commission and the United Nations are proud to be collaborating to organise the first ever Presidential Town Hall on Human Rights to mark the International Human Rights Day.”

Suleiman said: “I therefore welcome the programme of this year’s dialogue as the beginning of an agenda-focusing consultation and discussions aimed at defining a human rights-based agenda for Nigeria. I want to thank all our speakers who have made their valuable time and expertise available to us today.”

She noted that the second edition of the Human Rights Dialogue has been convened in order to appraise the implementation of the outcome document of the first UN-Government of Nigeria human rights dialogue; evaluate the current state of human rights in Nigeria in the light of the upcoming 2023 General Elections and to discuss Human Rights priorities for Nigeria for 2023 and Beyond.”

The Minister of Women Affairs, Madame Pauline Tallen in her message tasked everyone to place priority on the issues of women and children.

She insisted that the issues of women should be given thought to always and by everyone.

UN Says It Takes All to Fight Corruption To Standstill

0

The United Nations (UN) has said it takes all to fight corruption to a standstill with the states, government officials, civil servants, law enforcement officers, media representatives, the private sector, civil society, academia, the public and youth all having a role to play in ending the scourge.

The was it’s message during the occasion of the 2022 International Anti-Corruption Day (IACD) celebrated in Abuja.

The 2022 International Anti-Corruption Day (IACD) seeks to highlight the crucial link between anti-corruption and peace, security, and development, and at its core is the notion that tackling this crime is the right and responsibility of everyone, and that only through cooperation and the involvement of each and every person and institution can we overcome the negative impact of this crime.

A statement by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) on Friday said: “States, government officials, civil servants, law enforcement officers, media representatives, the private sector, civil society, academia, the public and youth alike all have a role to play in this.”

According to the statement the 2022 IACD also marks the start of our efforts to mark the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC), which is reflected by the theme of this year’s international day, “UNCAC at 20: Uniting the World Against Corruption”.

The statement said: “Over the next year, culminating with IACD 2023, together with partners worldwide, we will be reflecting on a world made better thanks to the collective push afforded by the Convention and, crucially, what gaps remain to ensure this is a truly strong mechanism for the years ahead.

“On this day, as well as beyond as we mark 20 years of UNCAC, join us as we continue to unite the world against corruption.”

The statement lamented that corruption is a major impediment to peace, security and development. “From education to the environment, from business to sports, from gender equality to access to justice, and more – corruption undermines all areas of society’s development.”

The statement recalled that in 2003, the world came together to adopt a landmark agreement – the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC). Since then, 188 parties have committed to the Convention’s anti-corruption obligations, showing near-universal recognition of the importance of good governance, accountability, and political commitment.

While also recalling that Nigeria ratified the Convention in 2004 and has been reviewed twice since the Conference of State Parties to the Convention established the Implementation Review Mechanism in 2009., it revealed that the UNODC Country Office in Nigeria, in cooperation with all relevant stakeholders, has prepared a report which takes stock of Nigeria’s follow up to the 2014 and 2019 UNCAC implementation reviews. The full report will be presented on 14 December at an event at the UN house in Abuja.

The statement added that: “The world today faces some of its greatest challenges in many generations – challenges which threaten prosperity and stability for people across the globe, including in Nigeria. As we move towards the twentieth anniversary of UNCAC in October 2023, this Convention and the values it promotes are more important than ever.”

Security: FG wants synergy among early warning, early response actors *OSPRE harps on multi-dimensional approach

The federal government through the Office for Strategic Preparedness and Resilience (OSPRE) on Thursday stressed the need for synergy among actors and stakeholders in the peace-building, early warning, and early response sectors.

Speaking during the inaugural summit and technical workshop of the Concord Initiative, the Director General of OSPRE, Chris Ngwodo, lamented the gap between civil society actors and state actors. “If both parties form synergy, there would be better results in the Peacebuilding and early warning and early response sector,” he said

Ngwodo said synergy is what is required at this time, hence this concord initiative aims at pulling together stakeholders in this sector to coordinate efforts, ideas, and resources in the operations across the country.

According to him, the inaugural summit which was organized by OSPRE with the support of GIZ and the European Union would look into bridging three major existing gaps in the sector; “the gap between civil society actors and state actors, the national level and the sub-national level actors and the movement from being more tactically oriented to being more strategically minded”

“There are state actors in the early warning and early response space, we have the national level and the sub-national level actors. So we have organizations that are working in the states and those working in communities. We want to partner with them because we operate at the federal level, we want to partner with them. The third gap we want to close is to move from being more tactically oriented to being more strategically minded. And that means having a long-term approach to peacebuilding in our daily response” Ngwodo explained.

In his remarks, the representative of the European Union, Ruben Alba reiterated the need for the government to collaborate with civil society in the Peacebuilding sector

He said, “We are supporting this Concord initiative because we want to create a platform where all the stakeholders including the government and the civil society can make a concerted effort to fight against insecurity and insurgency facing the country.”

While speaking at the inaugural event, Garba Abari, Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), called on every citizen to participate in building peace and security in the country especially as the 2023 election draws near.

Oko Youths Did Not Chase Elumelu, PDP Campaign Train Away, Rather They Were Welcome, Appreciated

The attention of the Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu Campaign Organization has been drawn to a misleading report published online on Wednesday, December 7, 2022 and credited to the Punch Newspaper, purporting that Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives was chased out of Oko, one of the satellite communities in Oshimili South Local Government Area.

The misleading reports also claimed that and the PDP Campaign train led by the Delta North PDP Senatorial Chairman, Elder Moses Iduh, was equally prevented from entering the Community.

A Press Statement dated on December 8, 2022 and signed by Mr. Eloke Aziekwu, Director Oshimili South Campaign Elumelu Campaign Council, disclosed that:

“This report is totally false and an unpardonable violation of journalism ethos of truth and factuality as it does not in any way reflect the facts of the very successful Ward to Ward Campaign but apparently scripted and smuggled into the media with a view to embarrass the Minority Leader as well as the Governor of Delta State, Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa ahead of the 2023 general elections.

“This is because at no time was the well-received PDP Ward to Ward Campaign in Delta North Senatorial District disrupted or challenged, let alone prevented in Oko by angry youth as claimed in the said publication.

“Also, at no time did any persons, group of persons or youths challenged or stopped the Minority Leader, Rt. Hon Ndudi Elumelu from entering Oko Community or any other community for that matter as purported in the misleading report.

“Contrary to the said report, PDP Ward to Ward Campaign train which had the Minority Leader and other leaders like Senator Ned Nwoko, Bridget Anyafulu and all the PDP candidates in the forthcoming 2023 elections, was excitedly received by the people of the Oko Community, especially the youths, who came out enmasse particularly to cheer and celebrate Hon. Elumelu for his numerous development projects and citizen empowerment in the area.

“To set the records straight, rather than chase Hon. Elumelu away as was mischievously  reported by the Punch Newspaper, the youths of Oko community, through their leader, properly identified as Mr. Chukwudi Okolie, warmly welcome and appreciated the Minority Leader for attracting projects to their Communities and declared their resolve to re-elect him to the National Assembly.

“The community recalled the numerous empowerment schemes and infrastructural projects by Hon. Elumelu, including the 26-point Oko landing bay, initiated and completed by him as part of his constituency project, with 8 brand new 22-seater speed boats to shuttle between Oko and Asaba, which will be commissioned in January 2023.

“The Youth Leader however used the opportunity to call for intervention about the state of a particular road and the issue faulty transformer and urged the campaign train to take their message to the state government.

“Responding, the Delta North PDP Chairman, Elder Moses Iduh explained to the youths that the first contractor who was engaged by the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa led, Delta State Government to handle the road project, which was top on the list of infrastructural priorities, disappointed them, causing the State Government to re-award the contract to another contractor, SETRACO and that work had begun on the road.

“On his part, Hon. Elumelu, thanked the people for their support pledged that he in collaboration with Sen. Ned Nwoko and Bridget Anyafulu, will ensure that the contractor on the road delivered and that the faulty transformer will be immediately repaired.

“While we respectfully aknowledge the credibility of Punch Newspapers built over the years, we find it alarming that such misleading narrative could find its way into the pages of a highly reputable media platform as Punch Newspapers. We urge the Management of Punch Newspapers to take immediate action in this direction.

“This is more so as our Campaign Organization has already established that the reporter, Matthew Ochei, the Asaba Punch Correspondent was not at the venue of the event but apparently fed his platform with script by mischief makers and political opportunists, who are being intimidated with the towering achievements and popularity of Hon. Ndudi Elumelu.

“The Ndudi Elumelu Campaign Organization therefore demands an unreserved apology and retraction on the publication, as a redress for the damages suffered as a result of the false report.

“Our Campaign Organization also urges the media practitioners to immune themselves from politics as well as always crosscheck the facts before going to press to avoid misleading the public.

FG Takes Strident Step on Plastic Waste Management

The Federal Government has taken strident step on management of plastic waste in the country by inaugurating a Project Steering Committee (PSC) for Promotion of Sustainable Plastics Value Chains through Circular Economy Practices.

Speaking at the inauguration in Abuja on Tuesday, the Minister of Environment, Mohammed Abdullahi said it is instructive that this is taking off at a time the attention of the global community is focused on negotiating the establishment of a legally binding instrument for the environmentally sound management of plastic throughout their entire lifecycle.

He said: “As you are all aware, misuse of plastic and poor management of its wastes pose danger to human health and the environment as they leach toxic chemical constituents such as endocrine disrupting chemicals which have been linked to infertility, diabetes, prostrate/breast cancer, into foods, drinks and the environment. Also tonnes of improperly disposed plastic wastes litter our streets, clog up drainages in rural and urban areas leading to flooding incidents as experienced in certain parts of the country recently, contaminate the soll affecting farmlands and livestocks, littering the oceans thereby threatening biodiversity and Increase greenhouse gas emissions when burnt indiscriminately.”

The Minister disclosed that it was in response to these challenges that the Federal Ministry of Environment in collaboration with relevant stakeholders took steps to address the plastic issue holistically by adopting circular economy model, stressing that: “In this wise, we have developed the national policies on solid waste and plastic waste management to promote environmental protection, resource and energy efficiency, circular economy practices and enhance the conservation of natural resources through sustainable production and consumption and currently implementing community based waste management projects with emphasis on recycling.”

He said: “It might also interest you to know that the Government of Japan funded a study on available sustainable alternative materials for plastic, innovative packaging and recycling technologies that meet market needs in Africa to reduce plastic leakages to the environment, in Nigeria. The study which was conducted in 2021, implemented by UNIDO in collaboration with the Ministry revealed the following: Low level of recycling activities in the country; Only 45% of waste are collected ‣ 80% of plastic waste goes to dumpsite while only 10% is recycled; Alternative materials to plastics are yet to be introduced in the market and recognition of bioplastics is low, amongst others.”

He noted that: “It is against this backdrop that this project was developed to address these gaps and is being funded by the Government of Japan and implemented by UNIDO in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Environment.”

The Minister said: “To kick start the implementation of the project, this multi stakeholder Project Steering Committee was established to provide technical assistance and guidance to the project towards achieving the aims and objectives. Membership of the Committee comprises of representatives from the following organizations: Federal Ministry of Environment (Co-chair); United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) – Co-Chair; The Embassy of Japan in Nigeria – Guest Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment National Environmental Standards, Regulation and Enforcement Agency (NESREA); Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA); Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA); Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN); Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance (FBRA); Waste Management Association of Nigeria (WAMASON).”

In his goodwill message, the Japanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Matsunaga Kazuyoshi noted that the Steering Committee is to oversee the Plastic Circular economy project through monitoring the project’s implementation progress, validate its overall direction and the work plan, and assist in mobilizing resources required for project implementation where necessary.

He disclosed that the Plastic Circular economy project was built on the study results conducted in Nigeria, aims to contribute to Nigeria’s inclusive and sustainable industrial development and reduce leakage of plastics to the environment through promotion of Plastic Circular economy principles and practices to be integrated into effective implementation of plastic management and strengthening plastic value chains,

He noted that: “This is the first project in which UNIDO has applied the concept of Plastic Circular economy to support policy implementation on plastic waste management in Nigeria. UNIDO has succeeded in bridging the gap between the diverse actors in Nigeria and Japan, and it is hoped that the knowledge and experience of UNIDO, Japan’s long- time development cooperation partner and the UN’s leading agency in the field of Plastic Circular economy, will be of use in the field of marine plastics.

“In addition to contributing to environmental conservation, this project is multifaceted and will contribute to economic growth by contributing to solving the problem of unemployment in the coastal areas, which is considered to be the root cause of the piracy problem: and promoting fisheries in the coastal areas by preserving the marine environment in the Gulf of Guinea. Through this project, Japan hopes to contribute to the enhancement of the value of the Gulf of Guinea, the development of the blue economy, and ultimately the prosperity of Nigeria.”

On his part, the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) Country Representative and Regional Director for West Africa, Mr. Jean Bakole
said: “Plastic litter is a major global environmental problem. Its production was drastically increased by more than twenty-folds between 1964 and 2015, with an annual output of 322 million metric tonnes. This figure is expected to double by 2035 and quadruple by 2050 if no global action is taken.”

He noted that: “Over the years, the mismanagement of plastic waste is not only contaminating the land ecosystem but it is also being released into the marine environment, thereby polluting it and threatening the biodiversity while also negatively impacting the blue economy.

“Mismanaged plastics and ineffective waste management is also a source of GHG emissions. According to the World Bank, plastic waste accounts for 12% of the total amount of municipal solid wastes generated globally, however, only 14% are collected for recycling while only 9% are recycled.”

He said: “As the most populated nation with the largest GDP in the African continent, Nigeria’s plastic waste problem is on the increase, this is based on its increased consumption from 578,000 tonnes of plastics in 2007 to about 1,250,000 tonnes. Therefore, the per capita plastic consumption has grown by 5% annually from 4.0kg to 6.5kg respectively. It is estimated that each citizen would consume about 7.5kg of plastics per year.”

Appeal Court nullifies sale of Intercontinental Hotel, orders return to Milan Group

The Court of Appeal Lagos Division has nullified the sale of Intercontinental Hotels, Lagos by Polaris Bank and Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria, and ordered a return of the facility to the original owner, the Milan Industries Ltd.
In a unanimous judgment in suit No CA/LAG/CV/476/2021 delivered by three Justices of the Appeal Court: Jimi Olukayode Bada, who read the lead judgment; Muhammad Ibrahim Sirajo and Peter Oyinkenimiemi Affen, the appellate court ruled that Milan Industries Ltd had fully paid the bank the Two Billion Naira (N2Billion) mortgage facility it secured from Polaris Bank before the hotel was taken over and sold by AMCON and the bank.
The bank, which was then known as Skye Bank had put the management of the five-star hotel under the receivership of Mr. Kunle Ogunba, an arrangement that was nullified by a Federal High Court in Lagos. Despite this, the bank went ahead and sold the hotel to another company, 11 PLC, a move that was challenged at the Appeal Court by the lawyers to Milan Industries Ltd, Messrs Ahmed Raji SAN and Tunde Kasunmu of Prof A.B Kasunmu SAN chambers.
It will be recalled that Milan Industries Ltd had taken a facility from Skye Bank to part finance the five-star hotel located in Victoria Island, Lagos and managed by IHG. The Milan Group, has up till 2021 to pay back the facility but in a curious move, the bank obtained an interim order to take over the management of the hotel, an order that was vacated when the suit was struck out by the court on March 20th 2018.
According to the Certified True Copy of the judgment signed and released on Wednesday by the Senior Registrar of the court, A. G. Balogun, the appellate court held that the two issues Milan Industries as Appellant/Cross Respondent was contesting were resolved in its favour. According to the lead judgment by Justice Jimi Bada, “With the resolution of Issues No. 1 and 2 in favour of the Cross Respondent and against the Cross Appellants (Polaris Bank, AMCON and 11 PLC), it is my view that this cross appeal lacks merit and it is hereby dismissed.”
While agreeing with the lead judgment, another member of the appeal court panel, Justice Ibrahim Sirajo stated that “the appellant insisted that it had paid over Two Billion Naira in liquidating the facility and that as at the time the 1st respondent (Polaris Bank) entered into agreement to sell the appellant’s secured asset to the 2nd respondent (AMCON), there was no collaterized and secured asset to sell to the 2nd respondent. It was also the case of the appellant that at the time the 2nd respondent sold the appellant’s Intercontinental Hotel to the 3rd respondent, the appellant had discharged its obligation under the legal mortgage by paying the amount secured by the property.”
To buttress his position, Justice Sirajo ruled that “I adopt his lordship’s reasoning and conclusion in the leading judgment as mine in also allowing the appeal. I abide by all the orders made in the leading judgment including that of the costs.”
While also concurring with the lead judgment by Justice Bada, the third member of the appeal panel, Justice Peter Affen said “the judicial reasoning and conclusions reached on the issues raised accord with mine, and I hereby affirm my agreement with the leading judgment which allowed the main appeal and dismissed the cross appeal. I equally abide by the orders on the costs.”

The Delta 2022 Publicity Sub-Committee Chairman emphasized that journalists covering the event were not supposed to be accommodated by the host state, pointing out that the responsibility was that of the media organisations for whom the journalists are working.

On medal haul, the Information Commissioner said Delta was keeping faith in its promise of hosting to win, having maintained a comfortable lead with 43 gold, 22 silver, 13 bronze and still counting on Day 4 of the sports fiesta.

Aniagwu said the state was setting record in track and field events, and would set a standard that would be difficult to beat in the closing formalities, to the extent that any state hoping to host would be taken to onerous task.

He thanked the athletes, officials, spectators, the press and security agencies for their for their outstanding cooperation and urged them to sustain the tempo to the end of the games.

Ondo Commissioner for Sports, Mr Bukola, who joined Aniagwu in the press briefing, hailed Delta for the standard set in the hosting of the National Sports Festival, acknowledging that the hosting of the 21st edition was the best he had even witnessed.

ECOWAS to Invest in Reducing Barriers to Trade in West Africa

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is to remove roadblocks of regional integration by investing time and resources on reducing tariff and non-tariff barriers in West Africa.

Speaking at the opening of the 89th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers in Abuja, President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray said in order to diagnose the state of the region, four strategic objectives have been identified, noting that these would be the focus of “our Management in the next four years. We call this the Commissions 4 by 4 (4 x 4) comprising specific deliverables or results to be realised within our mandate.”

Touray said one of the objectives is to deepen regional integration, adding that “here we intend to invest time and resources on reducing tariff and non-tariff barriers in our Community and improve the business environment for our private sector, fully operationalise the regional payment system to reduce difficulty of transactions in local currencies and over-reliance on international currencies (the US dollars/euros); we also intend to introduce ECOWAS VISA, at the first instance for diplomatic and service passports.”

He also stated that another objective is Enhanced Peace and Security, where there is an intention to fully implement the ECOWAS Action Plan against Terrorism, fully operationalise the ECOWAS Maritime Security Architecture, fully operationalise the National Early Warning and Response Centres and build synergy with the ECOWAS Early Warning and Response Mechanism, and continuously build ECOWAS mediation and response capacity.

Touray also said another of the strategic objective is good governance, including good corporate governance to build confidence in the private sector, stressing that: “We will be focusing on building a stronger regime against anti-constitutional changes of government and supporting our Member States to deepen democracy. Our target here includes completing the democratic transitions in Burkina Faso, Guinea and Mali and strengthening both ECOWAS Court and ECOWAS Parliament to play their respective roles in improving governance in our region.”

He said ECOWAS is equally interested in Inclusive and Sustainable Development, under which there is the intention to increase “our commitment to food security, regional highway development, energy access, disaster response, gender mainstreaming, and climate action.”

He added that: “Besides these four strategic objectives, we have identified two enablers, namely capable institutions and equitable partnerships. Under these capable institutions initiative, we intend to look at our processes and our human and financial resources with respect to partnerships.”

In her address, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Community of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau and President of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers, Dr. Carla Suzi Barbosa lamented that the economies of the countries of West Africa have witnessed the regressive effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine-Russia, through food crisis and scarcity of other products that constitute essential goods for the regional populations.

She said: “Furthermore, our sub-region has been troubled by human insecurity and violent extremism, and more recently by new waves of coups d’état, guided by uncertain compromises — which represents elements of fragility of some Member States in implementing mechanisms that guarantee the sustainability of the values of democracy and good governance.”

She stressed that as a consequence, “we are witnessing increasing situations of human poverty and vulnerabilities such as climate change, irregular rainfall, waves of internal displacement, forced migration, communities kidnapped by armed bandits, among others.”

The Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Zubairu Dada, in his message charged all the ministers to take the deliberations at the meeting to heart as the entire sub-region depends on them.

He said: “As an assembly of stakeholders with a collective responsibility of deciding on matters relating to integration and development in our region, it behaves on us to discuss all items on our agenda with an open mind in order to find solutions to the numerous challenges threatening our region, including the new wave of food insecurity and persistent obstacle to free trade, particularly on the Lagos-Abidjan Corridor.

“The interest of the citizens of our Community must be paramount and we need to avail ourselves of the opportunity presented by this meeting to articulate positions that will advance the achievement of sustainable economic integration and development of our region.”

United Nations call for Collective Action to end Violence against Women and Girls

The Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator and the UN Women Nigeria Country Office convened a high-level Orange the World Ceremony and the Lighting of the UN House to commemorate the 16 Days of Activism for the year. During the event, the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Nigeria and heads of government and agencies concertedly called for policy action and escalated interventions

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is an annual international campaign. It commences on 25th November (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women). It climaxes on 10th December (Human Rights Day), indicating that violence against women is the most pervasive breach of human rights worldwide. The global theme of the 16 Days of Activism for 2022 is UNiTE! Activism To End Violence Against Women and Girls!”
The United Nations leverages the annual 16 Days of Activism campaign to draw attention to the need for concerted action towards preventing and eliminating violence against women and girls. The event aimed to strengthen partnerships to end violence against women and girls among UN agencies, Government MDAs, Diplomatic Missions and Development Partners, Security Agencies, CSOs and Media, among other stakeholders, while increasing visibility and public support for the local efforts to end violence against women and girls.
In Nigeria, 30 per cent of girls and women aged between 15 and 49 reported having experienced sexual abuse.  The Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey shows that 14 per cent of women in Nigeria have experienced physical violence. Cases of violence against women increased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. A UN report revealed that by April 2020, cases of gender-based violence increased by 56 per cent after only two weeks of lockdown.
UNICEF reports that “six out of every ten children experience some form of violence – one in four girls and 10 per cent of boys have been victims of sexual violence”.  Notably, violence against women in the home usually involves the abuse of children and other household members.
“Another major aspect of this ceremony is the official orange lighting of the UN Building.  The light initiative is integral to the UN Women and the UN Secretary-General’s UNiTE Campaign and is used to “symbolize a brighter future without violence.” The “orange” comes from the fire ignited by the many women’s groups dedicated to combating violence against women around the world. We call on our partners to join us in promoting the orange campaign throughout the 16 days and beyond so as to galvanize more support to end violence against women and girls. We must sustain the momentum for a brighter future where men and women, girls and boys enjoy equal rights, devoid of discrimination and all forms of violence” said Beatrice Eyong, UN Women Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS in her special remarks.
The 2020 Trafficking in Humans Report found that 70% of globally trafficked people are young girls and adult women. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in 2019 reported that women and girls together account for 72% of all human trafficking victims detected globally, with girls representing more than three out of four child trafficking victims.
Most cases of sexual violence are not reported to the authorities. Fewer than 40 per cent of the women who experience violence seek the help of any sort.  Most women who seek help look to family and friends, and very few look to formal institutions such as the police and health services. In some cases, women who accuse men of sexual assault have faced backlash and apathetic attitudes from security agencies. The United Nations believes there is a need for deliberate action by government and security agencies to improve response to gender-based violence, prosecution, and redress for survivors.
“We are calling for an increased spotlight on the many forms that this violence can take and the culture of silence that often surrounds its victims. Much progress has been made recently with the Violence Against Person’s Prohibition Act which has been passed into law by 34 out of the 36 states. This has been made possible by the collective efforts of government, civil society, development partners, UN agencies, and the donor community. Let this be an inspiration to us for further partnership and coordination,” remarked Matthias Schmale, UN Resident Coordinator in his welcome address.
Part of the event was an exhibition What Was She Wearing? (Curated by Education As Vaccine with support from the Government of Canada and Frontline Aids) the exhibition addresses one of the most pervasive myths of rape culture. It also aims to create new conversations and disrupt harmful social attitudes to prevent violence and ensure access to justice for all survivors.
The event’s highlight was lighting of the UN House in orange. The light initiative is integral to the UN Women and the UN Secretary-General’s UNiTE Campaign and “symbolises a brighter future without violence.” The “orange” comes from the fire ignited by the many women’s groups dedicated to combating violence against women worldwide.
The event drew participants from high profile delegations such as top-level government officials, high level UN Delegation, Donor Communities, Civil Society Organizations, young women organizations, male champions, persons living with disabilities, among others.

Atiku/Okowa Presidency Will Bring Development, Wipe Out Insecurity, Elumelu Declares…Pursues Establishment of Asaba Federal University of Technology, More Job Opportunities

The Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu has assured that a Presidency led by Atiku Abubakar and Sen. Ifeanyi Okowa will bring in meaningful development that will impact positively to the lives of Nigerians.

The Minority Leader, spoke Monday and Tuesday in Oshimili North Local Government Area, Delta State while canvassing for votes for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and all its candidates during the on-going rallies ahead of the forthcoming general elections

A massive crowd followed Elumelu who was in the train of the Delta North PDP Ward Campaign Team led by the PDP Senatorial Chairman, Elder Moses Idul, as it visited 10 wards in five communities including; Ibuza with five wards, Ukala – Okpunor, Akwukwu – Igbo, Ebu, Illah and Okpanam.

Elumelu, while soliciting for their votes, appreciated the people of Oshimili North for their love for the PDP and further explained that the Atiku/Okowa ticket will wipe all forms of insecurity that has bedeviled the Nation.

“Atiku is a complete gentleman who understands the urgent needs of Nigerians and he is prepared to lead the country out of the woods. He is not a man that says something and he does not do it.

“He chose our Governor, His Excellency Sen. Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, to run a joint ticket with him for the presidency because of his belief in capacity. Our Governor is intelligent, well educated, well behaved, manned and calm. You cannot make the number two citizen of Nigeria without being calm and approachable. He chose him because he believe that he is the person that can assist him. He believe in him to deliver Nigeria with him.

“I strongly believe that the Atiku/Okowa Presidency will bring meaningful things to Nigeria. It is a ticket that will wipe away insecurity, ensure a stable and robust economy and ensure that our debts are written off. He did it before with President Obasanjo and we had zero debt profile. They are bringing in men and women with proven integrity who are technically sound,to help deliver Nigeria from the economic quagmire that we have found ourselves.

“If you look at all the federal roads across the nation, they are in deplorable shape. Atiku/Okowa has a master plan to make them motorable for Nigerians. They have the master plan on how to improve on the lives of the people of riverine areas of Nigeria and make them enjoy and benefit from the wealth that comes from their areas,” the Minority Leader stated.

Further assuring the victory of the PDP, Elumelu said; “the APC Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Tinubu has already blessed PDP publicly on national television. He specifically delivered Sheriff Oborevwori as Governor of Delta State when he told Omo-Agege, also on national television, that he will be Governor of Niger Delta State in a country where there is no state as Niger Delta State. All the candidates of the Party from national to the state have no problem winning in the general elections for the fact that PDP is blessed and has been chosen by Nigerians,” he said.

Elumelu, who seeks the mandate of the people to return to the House of Representatives, assured that he will dwell more on human capital development by ensuring that more youths are recognized in his empowerment programme, while also involving women to make them self-reliant by supporting them financially.

“We are going to vigorously pursue the establishment of the Asaba Federal University of Technology, Asaba, and the issue of the creation of Anioma State. Though the bills has been passed by the two Chambers, but yet to be signed by Mr. President, I hope that before he leaves, he will assent to it, particularly the establishment of Asaba Federal University of Technology,” he assured.

He stressed that the establishment of the University in Delta State will go a long way in creating more job opportunities for the people of Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency, Delta North Senatorial district and Delta State as a whole.

“Most importantly, we will put forward bills to make lives meaningful in Nigeria, not only in my constituency and also ensure that what is due to our people gets to them without any form of interference,” Elumelu promised while assuring that more community based projects will be sighted in more of the communities in Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency, Delta North and Delta State in general.

He therefore urged the people of Oshimili North to vote overwhelmingly for Atiku/Okowa for President and Vice president, Sheriff Oborevwori/Onyeme for Governor and Deputy Governor, Ned Nwoko for Senate, Ndudi Elumelu for House of Representatives and Frank Esenwa for House of Assembly.

Elumelu enlightened the people to look out for the Umbrella, the symbol of the PDP and vote for the party in the Presidential, Governorship, National and State Assembly polls in the 2023 general elections.

DELTA 2023 and Intra-Delta Central Equity

-By Olorogun Olori Magege:

Delta State has since 1999 ran on the wheel of equity, fairness and the stability, peace and cohesion occasioned by the presence of justice. This is why Delta State stands tall to be counted among the three most stable states in Nigeria today. The reality of the peace and stability that hold sway in Delta State is not by accident. It is the product of a deliberate decision and choice orchestrated by the leaders and which the people embraced wholesale for the good of all.

This experience is what has given birth to and sustained the rotational governorship that has made the State a model in equity and fairness to all other states in Nigeria. From 1999 till date, the governorship has gone round three different senatorial districts namely; Delta Central, Delta North and Delta South. It is now going back to Delta Central and it will do a clockwise movement to align with order and cohesion. As it does the round again, it becomes beholding to leaders and people of each senatorial district to also ensure equity and fairness that will take into consideration the diversity of each of the senatorial districts which in size and population can actually constitute different states.

The reality which some selfish political elements will not want to admit is that the three senatorial districts are not as homogenous as they want to make people to believe. There are factors which point to some degree of divergence. Such factors include linguistic or language factor, different traditions of origin, political delineation in terms of federal constituencies and so on. Our focus in this intervention is the Delta Central senatorial district of Delta State whose turn it is to produce the next governor of the State based on the rotational arrangement. Delta Central is made up of the Urhobo nation that is constituted by twenty-four kingdoms many of which have their unique traditions of origin. There are also linguistic and dialectal variations in the language they speak. Another important consideration which the Delta Central people have come to identify with has to do with the delineation into federal constituencies which are three namely; Ughelli/Udu Federal Constituency, Ethiope Federal Constituency and Okpe/Sapele/Uvwie Federal Constituency. Those who have been following the historical evolution of Delta State from the era of the Midwest Region through to Bendel State to this point will be familiar with the political slant regarding what constituencies have produced governors and which one has not. Such a realization will guide us in making the right choice in order to ensure that there is intra-senatorial district equity in Delta Central.

A look at the narrative so far shows that Ughelli/Udu Federal Constituency has so far produced two governors in Chief Samuel Jereton Mariere, first Governor of the old Midwest Region and Chief Felix Ibru, first Governor of Delta State. The Ethiope Federal Constituency has produced the Governor of Delta State in Chief James Onanefe Ibori. It is therefore apparent that only one out of the three federal constituencies in Delta Central is left out in producing a governor for Delta State. The constituency left out is the Okpe/Sapele/Uvwie Federal Constituency also known as OSU. It is therefore understandable for all Deltans to work towards ensuring that the Okpe/Uvwie/Sapele (OSU) Federal Constituency produces the next governor. To make things fall in place, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during its governorship primary election ensured that equity and fairness prevail by massively voting for the emergence of an OSU constituent in Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori the present Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly as the party’s governorship candidate. The PDP has always demonstrate its commitment to equity and fairness and Deltans have always voted for that commitment. This is also what Deltans have resolved to do in 2023.

Ensuring the emergence of an OSU constituent as governor of Delta State has many good effects for the unity and cohesion of Delta Central and to be particular the Urhobo people. There is before this moment a strong feeling of marginalization among the Okpe people who feel that they have not been allowed into the mainstream of Urhobo affairs and politics. It was this same feeling that made the Isoko to break away from the Urhobo many decades ago. Thankfully, for the Urhobo people they came to the realization of the many advantages that will accrue to fully integrating the Okpe into the mainstream of its affairs. The umbrella socio-cultural organization of the Urhobo people, the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) realized the necessity of such an integration when it ensured the emergence of an Okpe man in General Patrick Aziza to emerge as its the president-general many years after the union was founded. The emergence of Genral Aziza as UPU president-general healed wounds and allayed the fears of Okpe marginalization.

On the political scene, the Okpes have so far produced Senators as the highest elected office holders. Senators David Dafinone, William Eradajaye and Adegor Eferakeya were the senators from the Okpe axis. They have not produced a governor in the last fifty-nine years beginning from 1963. Now that the PDP has deemed it fit and proper to do what is right morally and politically, all the people of Delta State should queue behind the candidacy of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori as the next governor of Delta State. This act will seal the bond between Okpe and the rest of Urhobo as it will signal full integration and healing.

Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori remains Delta State’s most populist oriented governorship candidate having come from among the people who have come to see him as one of theirn own. He is well educated up to postgraduate level with exposure to best global practices in political leadership and management in Ivy League universities around the world. He has also unveiled a manifesto brilliantly anchored on an agenda codenamed MORE AGENDA which seeks to advance the fortunes of Delta State and her people. There is no doubt that all is set for the enthronement of full equity and fairness in Delta State come 2023

I No Longer Seek Government Job, Says STEPreneur Eleah

-By Gertrude Onyekachukwu-Uteh:

Basil Eleah hails from Aniocha South LGA. Though he has an NCE and trained in Tiling in the 2016/2017 STEP cycle, he has diversified to sales of bird feeds, poultry and is a point of sales agent (POS) to increase his streams of income. He is five years in business as he shares his success story.

“I am elated. I have trained one person in tiling and I have a staff member who mans my POS business when I am in the field. I practiced tiling for three years, saved some money before I diversified to sales of bird feeds, poultry and POS business.

“I went into partnership with a friend on the sales of bird feed in 2020. During training, I was taught that I could engage in more than two businesses as much as I can control.

“I have bought a plot of land. I provide well for my wife and children. STEP built my life, opened my eyes and gave me the opportunity to do well in business. As it is now, I no longer seek for a government job”

ADEMOLA ADELEKE: DUSTING THE DUSTY TABLES

-By Austen Akhagbeme:

With all the expected pomp, fanfare, music and excitement reminiscent of the amiable personality of the newly sworn-in governor of Osun state, Senator Ademola Jackson Adeleke took over the reins of power bestriding a trojan horse.

His youthful mindset, dancing steps and easy mien could not hide his resolve and determination to undo the many human and political boobytraps allegedly set on his way by the outgoing Governor Oyetola, his ace political rival and predecessor.

It should be recalled that Senator Adeleke and his Party had it so tough coming this far since 2019 when they lost it by the whiskers, via a controversial re-runs. And so, Oyetola had the first laugh.

The intrigues and internal wrangling within the APC in the state before and after the party primaries created an added advantage to the emergence of the ” dancing Senator”. Perhaps, the pain of losing a seat as an incumbent necessitated the many alleged last-minute rush job of the outgone Governor Oyetola, which has ingloriously become a cause for concern for any lover of good governance.

Here is a governor who within four years, had only three permanent secretaries but surreptitiously employed thirty of his party members as permanent secretaries five days before his departure.

Just like in some other states where state governors emasculate local government councils and officials, former governor Gboyega Oyetola didn’t find it necessary and democratic to conduct local government elections within his four-year tenure until a month before his handing over.

All in all, Oyetola in his four years in office employed less than two thousand workers but was alleged to have suddenly rushed to engage twelve thousand party members without due process as he prepares to vacate his seat.

Just yesterday, most senior government political appointees of the former governor in Osun state were alleged to have absconded with their official vehicles and even home appliances in their official residences and this is unthinkable!

There is no doubt that the political animosity and the unwarranted bureaucratic problem created by these alleged ignoble acts of an outgoing government may take some time to ameliorate or correct. Perhaps, this is why the seemingly “harmless” and ever-dancing Governor Adeleke is not taking this lying low. He must dust the dusty tables.

Investigations show the two notorious brothers began a career in the illicit drug business since the late 90s when they started as pocket dealers before they later established smoking joints/bunks in their community, Ntigha Okpuola and subsequently grew to become barons; owning Hotels, Houses in choice areas of Abia, Rivers and Imo State, with exotic cars in their homes.
The NDLEA has been on their trail sine 2013 when they organized a mob attack on some of the Agency’s operatives who attempted to apprehend them during a raid. At least, one of the officers attacked then is still bedridden till date. The two drug lords equally own armed militia guarding their houses and drug stores, where they deal in assorted illicit substances like Cocaine, Heroin, Methamphetamine (Mpuru-miri), Loud/Arizona and all sorts.

Onitsha Market Fire: Soludo Calls For Immediate Emergency Training, Canvasses Insurance For Traders

0

-From SUNNY A.  DAVID:

The Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has called on traders and business people to insure their businesses against emergencies.

Governor Soludo stated this through the Deputy Governor, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, who represented him at the scene of the unfortunate fire incident that happened at Kano Street, beside Main Market, Onitsha.

According to the Governor, the visit was to physically assess the extent of damage done with a view to proffering preventive solutions in future.

Sympathizing with traders who lost their shops and goods to the inferno, the Governor who thanked God that no life was lost, stated that a meeting between the State government and market leaders will be convened, to seek for permanent solution.

He expressed his concern over security of lives of traders, stressing on enacting policies that would help prevent fire outbreak in the future.

“If it means every trader at Main Market to have fire extinguishers in their shops, we will put it as a law and enforce compliance. An immediate emergency training must be conducted”, Governor Soludo said.

“How many traders have insurance? I have always asked this question. Insurance helps to cushion effect of this nature.

“This is the kind of structure we want to lay and we will get there.

“We will expose you to all these insights because this is what the government has come to do,” Mr. Governor stated.

He however regretted that such unfortunate fire mishap has sadly become an annual occurrence in the State and expressed optimism that such would not reoccur, especially during the festive season.

The Governor pointed out the existence of illegal structures in the market which usually lead to lack of emergency exits.

Some of the market people observed that the State fire Service at the Main Market is not functional and pleaded with the State Government to come to their aid.

The Commissioner for Power and Water Resources, Engr. Julius Chukwuemeka, his Special Duties counterpart, Barr. Sly Ezeokenwa among others accompanied the Deputy Governor on the inspection tour as directed by Governor Soludo.

Ovie Omo-Agege: In Case You Have Forgotten!

0

-By Ejiro Idama:

Nigerian politics has a way of throwing up dimwits who clothe themselves in the shining robes of identities that they really are not. These dimwits have largely contributed to the retarded development of Nigeria as a nation. Since our politics and social consciousness are still evolving it is expected that such maladies are bound to occur. But as we grow and evolve such persons who parade themselves in borrowed robes and lay false claims to messianic credentials should be identified and exposed for what they really are before they destroy the body polity.

These elements who come in the guise of messiahs, but are really traitors are grouping again. We must be vigilant, identify, name and point at them. They should be exposed and stopped so that they will not jeopardize us further.

The lackey Deputy Senate President of the rubber stamp and most docile Senate ever in Nigeria, Senator Augustine Ovie Omo-Agege is in the news again as always for the wrong reason. A good example of political prostitution, Augustine Omo-Agege, he must be frightened of the name Augustine now, has suffered from an illusion of becoming governor of Delta State for seventeen years.

Omo-Agege who lived an obscure life in the United States of America (USA) after having been severely indicted for unethical practices, fled to Nigeria and not capable of court appearances joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) hoping to climb on the back of his Chief Judge father. Without a naira to his name Omo-Agege survived at the mercy of friends. He failed woefully when he tried to run for the House of Representatives seat. The kindhearted governor of Delta State at that time, Chief James Ibori took pity on him and appointed him as a personal assistant. With deceit, blackmail and eye-service and some say juju, Omo-Agege worked his way to become a commissioner and fixed himself into the tenders board where he committed havocs tampering with projects whose amounts ran into billions of naira and which could have turned Delta State into an Eldorado. Agege got so power drunk when he became SSG that he thought of himself as the most powerful person in the state.

In his intoxication by power, he stepped out to contest for the governorship of the State and failed woefully. He then became a serial election looser. Apart from the 2006 primaries that he lost, he failed in two governorship elections in 2011. He failed in his attempt to become senator in 2013. He failed in his attempt to become governor in the 2014 primaries. He failed trying to be a senator in 2015 until the court smuggled him into the red chambers.

Agege has also been caught up in serial political prostitution. He was in PDP, then AC, he was in RPN, joined ACN, returned to PDP, ran to Labour Party and later jumped into APC. His record of political prostitution is second to none in Nigeria.

Agege is showing off as a political force, but this is absolutely untrue. He is just a political straw-man pretending to be a champion. He has always ridden to power and influence on the back of benefactors like Chief Ibori and Chief Great Ogboru good and selfless leaders that he later betrayed and brutally stabbed in the back. Agege is also a slimy opportunist who will do anything including groveling and crying to get power. The story of the mace theft and the resultant reward for him as Deputy Senate President and how he knelt down in slavish gratitude to President Buhari continue to hunt the Urhobo people for whom it is a taboo for a chief which he is to kneel.

Agege’s public service record is burdened by criminality. How he looted funds and turned his house into a CBN from where his cooks and housekeepers made away with bags of money is well known to Deltans. He also extorted contractors handling different projects across the State. He collected money for forty-eight projects in his Orogun clan which he didn’t execute. Let him tell Deltans how much he was worth between 2003 and 2005 and then how much he was worth in 2007.

But for the fact that we live in a society of forgive and forget, Agege’s record of betrayal is unmatched. He betrayed the Urhobo people when he snatched ballot boxes to undermine the Urhobo choice of governorship candidate in the 2007 election. He was chased into the swamp where he took cover all night. He betrayed his foremost benefactor, Chief James Ibori. He betrayed Chief Otega Emerhor and Chief Great Ogboru. He has betrayed everybody that he was or is associated with.

Agege has also betrayed the Delta State ideal of rotational governorship which was adopted to promote fairness, equity, peace and stability. His uncontrolled aggression and inordinate ambition made him to disown the rotational principle in Delta State politics. He contested when it was the turn of Delta South. He also contested when it was the turn of Delta North. He is a betrayal of public trust and accord. He also manipulated the APC governorship primaries in 2019 to the extent that results were declared when contestants were still looking for the venue of the election. Is this man who is the symbol of lack of moral probity the one pretending to rescue Delta State?

There are also the many lies he has told Nigerians and Deltans. He lied that he saved President Buhari from impeachment when in truth there was no attempt to impeach the President. He lied about being in support of power shift when in truth he was the chief campaigner for Senator Ahmed Lawan for president hoping he would be his running mate. He lied about midwifing the electoral bill, but the truth was that he voted against electronic voting. He has also failed to complete the constitution amendment assignment. Is this the man that wants to be governor?

Let Agege tell us the people he is representing as senator and how well he has represented them.

The five projects he proposed are all for his Orhomuru-Orogun, a very small community, if not the smallest Orogun community. What happened to the other twenty three clans that make up the Urhobo nation? Should such a nepotistic fellow be governor of Delta State?

We have not forgotten and Agege who speaks in incoherent diffident splutters should remember his many political and moral infractions that make him grossly unsuitable for the high office of governor. He is not a political messiah but a political maniac. Just in case he has forgotten.

Okowa Commended For Upgrading Schools Standard In Okoloba Community

*Community Begs For More Assistance

-From Hàrrison Akamule:

Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has been commended for being thoughtful and magnanimous towards the education of children in Okoloba Community by supplying 50 desks and seats to Okoloba Secondary School  and  50  desks and seats to Oge Primary School, Okoloba Community, both in Bomadi local government area of the state.

The Chairman, Okoloba Community,  Mr Ebiboloemi Bidi who made this statement in Okoloba Community last week  said what the Governor has done was a big relief because both schools were not having enough seats for sometime especially the secondary school.

According to him, with the supply of the  seats, it will further  guarantee their future success in education, which to him is bedrock of life.

Mr Bidi also appealed to  the Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa whose love of education to Deltans is  unprecedented to provide blocks of  classrooms to Okoloba Secondary school, which according to him is having only  one functional four Classrooms, out of it one has been turned to staff room.

The Okoloba Community Chairman warned Pupils and Students of the schools not to vandalise it. He noted that he will deal decisively with anyone caught mishandling  school property.
