Yobe Commissions Health Facilities in Border Communities with Niger Republic

0

Yobe state government has inaugurated healthcare facilities in some border communities.

This would put a stop to the frequent travels of the people in the communities across the border to neighbouring Niger Republic for health care services.

The state commissioner of health, Dr Mohammed Lawan Gana, said new healthcare centres have been established in Tulo-tulo, Dole-Machina, Mayori and Gumsa border communities by the Buni administration to make healthcare accessible and affordable in the communities.

Gana said Governor Buni’s policy of establishing one functional primary healthcare in every political ward, has made healthcare accessible and affordable to the communities is a working reality.

He said on Thursday that: “ I commissioned these facilities on behalf of His Excellency Governor Mai Mala Buni CON, to commence providing services to the people.

“Government provided the facilities with equipment, drugs and medical personnel for effective services” the Commissioner said.

Gana revealed that government embarked on a holistic transformation of the health sector to provide effective and efficient healthcare delivery to the people.

He noted that: “The Buni administration has established 138 out of the proposed 178 functional Primary Healthcare facilities in every political ward.

“Six Primary Healthcare Centers have been upgraded to General Hospitals and the four General Hospitals in Gashua, Potiskum, Buni Yadi and Geidam have been upgraded to Specialist Hospitals in addition to the one in Damaturu to bring healthcare delivery to the doorsteps of our people” the commissioner said.

He also noted that the government has re-equipped the State University Teaching Hospital to facilitate research and treatment.

He said the Buni administration introduced the Contributory Healthcare Programme for formal and informal sector to boost effective medical services to civil servants and the vulnerable group.

The commissioner added that the government has grossly subsidised medical charges in tertiary medical facilities.

According to him, N45,000 is charged for MRI against N70-N100 paid in other states while N15,000 is charged for CT Scan against the exorbitant rates obtained in other health facilities”.

He assured that government would continue to improve on the services provided to its health institutions.

LANDMARK DEVELOPMENT OF EDUCATION AND HEALTHCARE INFRASTRUCTURE AND FACILITIES

Okowanomics Fact Sheet No. 10, November-A, 2022

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Okowanomics Series is a semi-monthly [twice-a-month] bulletin of evidence-based “Fact Sheet” showing Governor Okowa’s spectacular achievements of job and wealth creation, development of infrastructure, urban renewal, transformation of education and health systems, peace and security, social harmony and overall economic development. The Scorecard Series is a “book of chronicles” of Governor Okowa’s legacies and footprints in the geopolitical entity of Delta State. It is a tracker dashboard that mirrors real-time the unique developmental strides in Delta State under the leadership of Governor Okowa.

The Series is developed and published by Delta State Job & Wealth Creation Bureau, using verified information and data from the relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

2.0 THE CONCEPT OF OKOWANOMICS

Okowanonics is the brand identity representing the gamut of Governor Okowa’s political shrewdness, developmental philosophy and governance ideology defined by his people-centred policies, mission-oriented approach, economic prudence and social intelligence. Underlying Okowanomics is Governor Okowa’s exceptional assortment of personality and character virtues notably critical thinking, clear foresight, sound planning, clever coordination, effective execution, humility, self-discipline, people-skills and executive intelligence. These sterling qualities and attributes are manifest in the excellent leadership and exemplary governance of Delta State from 29th of May 2015 to date.

3.0 FOCUS OF 10th EDITION

Okowanomics Fact Sheet No. 10 spotlights Governor Okowa’s historic upliftment of living conditions in the riverine, coastal and creek communities of Delta State through unprecedented development of education and healthcare infrastructure and facilities.

4.0 THE RIVERINE, CREEK AND COASTAL FEATURES OF DELTA STATE

Given its location, Delta State has a unique geo-ecological landscape. On its western boundary, the State has a long Atlantic Ocean coastline of about 163 km. More than one third of its total area of 18,050 square kilometres consists of natural water bodies such as rivers, streams, tributaries, creeks, coastal swamps and estuaries. This geographical feature has both advantages and disadvantages for the affected communities and the entire State.

On the one hand, the main advantages of the state’s geography relate to the huge potentials for the development of marine economy, aquaculture, artisanal fishing and maritime transport. The State has a rare quadruplet of seaports along the Niger Delta coastline in the port towns of Warri, Sapele, Koko and Burutu and two critical national economic assets – crude oil terminals at Escravos and Forcados. On the other hand, the geospatial and topographical peculiarities of the riverine, coastal and creek communities pose tremendous constraints to their infrastructural, physical and economic development.

The constraints of infrastructural and physical development of these communities imply huge additional project construction costs and highly difficult transport logistics to deliver on health and education facilities, housing and transport infrastructure. Overcoming this geospatial challenge requires strong political will, sound planning, cost effectiveness and faithful execution of projects. These are the qualities and virtues which His Excellency, Governor of Delta State, has brought to bear in the historic transformation of the living conditions and welfare of communities and people of the state’s riverine, coastal and creek communities.

The historic transformation of these riverine, coastal and creek communities is manifest in the assortment of development projects that have either been completed or ongoing, from 2015 to date. The development projects include roads, bridges, schools, health centres, housing, markets and support for economic activities. These projects have had historic impact on the upliftment of living conditions, welfare and development prospects of these communities.

A sample of Okowanomics scorecard on educational and health sector development impacts in the riverine, coastal and creek communities is enumerated as follows.

Amendment of NDLEA Act ‘ll further strengthen Nigeria’s drug war – Marwa

0

Chairman/ Chief Executive of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Retd) has said that the ongoing amendment of the agency’s act at the National Assembly will further boost the country’s fight against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking.

Marwa, who gave the verdict during an opening remarks at the NDLEA Special Purpose Committee (SPC) conference in Abuja on Thursday, disclosed that some of the details of the new bill, which is in its final stage of being passed, will strengthen the hand of the agency and discourage trafficking of illicit substances because of the stringent punishment measures stipulated for drug offences.

The NDLEA boss, while appreciating the SPC members, who are experts in relevant fields that constitute an advisory group to support the work of the agency across the country for their contributions to the achievements of NDLEA under his leadership, he said the time is now for well-spirited Nigerians to join the fight against the drug scourge, which may not be in every family but in every community.

He said: “Let me state from the onset that contrary to a recent report that the drug abuse problem is in every household in Nigeria, I’ll like to correct that misrepresentation and state that there are indeed families not afflicted by this menace. However, that we can’t say of the communities. It is almost certain that every community has this problem.

“That said, I will like to assure that the NDLEA Act is presently in its final stage of its amendment at the National Assembly. It’s a private bill sponsored by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics, Senator Hezekiah Dimka and it will among other things remove the option of fine in the sentencing of offenders as well as make punishments for drug offences more stringent.”

He added that President Muhammadu Buhari understands the drug problem very well and has as part of his continuous support approved the recruitment of additional 5,000 officers and men to further strengthen the agency. While briefing the conference of the several successes so far recorded by the NDLEA under him, Marwa said apart from putting premium on training, he has also ensured that personnel welfare remains top on his agenda.

In her goodwill message to the conference, First Lady of Edo State, Mrs Betsy Obaseki who is a member of the SPC emphasized the importance of the strategic committee to the work of NDLEA.

She said: “What NDLEA has achieved in recent time is a reflection of the focus, patriotism, and commitment of Gen. Marwa. He is the kind of person Nigeria needs in leadership positions to take this country to the great height it’s destined for.”

She urged the gathering to remain optimistic about a glorious Nigeria.”

Experts who made presentations at the conference coordinated by Otunba Lanre Ipinmisho, a former Director General of NDLEA include: Prof Abdul Wakawa; Prof. Oluwatoyin Odeku; Prof. Isidore Obot, among others.

China To Unveil Financial Plan to Combat Global Economy Downturn

1

China is planning to come out with a strategy to combat the growing impact of COVID-19 and Russia/Ukraine war on global economy.

Beijing, the capital of China is presently hosting the Financial Street Forum, where 27 activities on 39 topics are being held, with four parallel forums, namely real economy and financial services, global market and financial development, digital economy and financial technology, and governance system and financial stability.

The forum was first held in 2012 and upgraded as a state-level and international industry forum in 2020. A decade later, it has been referred to as the guidepost for China’s financial reform.

Beijing Financial Street, dubbed “China’s Wall Street” and the “brain” of China’s finance, which was officially formed in 1993, celebrates its 30th year anniversary this year.

The annual Financial Street Forum, which is holding from Monday to Wednesday in Beijing with the focus on economic development and financial cooperation amid unprecedented changes, is expected to proffer solution to the global economy that is experiencing a number of changes, including significant economic growth slowdown in a growing share of economies, high inflation unseen in several decades, tightening financial conditions in most regions and the lingering COVID-19 pandemic.

Recent reports show that the global GDP growth is forecast to slow from 6.0 percent in 2021 to 3.2 percent in 2022 and 2.7 percent in 2023 – the weakest growth outlook since 2001 except for the global financial crisis and the acute phase of the COVID-19 pandemic – according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Also, a third of the world economy faces two consecutive quarters of negative growth. The GDP of the United States contrasted in the first half of 2022, while the euro zone contrasted in the second half, said the IMF.

Global inflation is forecast to rise from 4.7 percent in 2021 to 8.8 percent in 2022 before dropping to 6.5 percent in 2023, according to the IMF. Upside inflation surprises have been most widespread among advanced economies, with greater variability in emerging markets and developing economies.

High inflation has prompted rapid monetary policy tightening as fiscal support related to COVID-19 pandemic wanes.

Beijing Financial Street (BFS) hosts Chinese financial and monetary authorities and over 1,900 financial institutions. It is also home to the headquarters of 175 large financial institutions, 16 of which are on the Fortune Global 500 list, as well as 143 foreign financial institutions.

Assets of financial institutions on the BFS have reached 133.6 trillion yuan ($18.8 trillion), while assets of listed companies on the BFS are valued at over 143 trillion yuan ($20.1 trillion) this year, according to data from the BFS.

About 41 percent of the national assets of commercial banks are on the BFS, which also hosts 90 percent of national credit funds and 65 percent of insurance premium funds.

0

The President and Chairman of the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID), Dr. Agyekum Donkor has been awarded the prestigious Prix de la Fondation by the Crans Montana Forum at a ceremony in Geneva, Switzerland.

The award was presented to Donkor last Friday by His Royal Highness Prince Jean of Luxembourg and Crans Montana Founder and Chairman, Jean Paul Carteron.

The Crans Montana Forum is a world leading international institution dedicated to Public-Private Sector Cooperation. It has become an elegant meeting place for high level officials and top decision makers from Governments and Business and Prix de la Fondation is awarded in recognition of an accomplished work and serves as a solemn encouragement.

At a cocktail held at the Fairmont Hotel in Geneva ahead of receiving the top award, Donkor highlighted the global economic downturn created by the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

He said: “The whole world is in economic turmoil as a result of two external shocks, the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine. As a result of these challenges, there have been escalating prices of food and energy and economies all over the world are suffering.”

Donkor lamented that food and energy prices have gone up tremendously which has affected the global commodity supply, resulting in price hikes in various jurisdictions, leading to severe economic challenges. He noted that inflation is on the high side, especially with countries that had been experiencing low inflationary records like Japan. Japan had rather been fighting deflation but now they are also battling inflation, he disclosed.

Later in a presentation to the Crans Montana Forum, Donkor told the audience that the ECOWAS Bank for International Development was more interested in the solutions more than the challenges. He called for the need to change our orientation and re-engineer our value system if we are to rise above the economic circumstances we find ourselves.

“Unless there is a change within, there cannot be a change without,” the EBID President counselled stating, “it is necessary to reinvent foreign policies and diplomatic action based on the necessary and unavoidable acceptance of the other.”

The award is an acknowledgement of Dr. Donkor’s numerous contributions to the socio-economic development of the sub-region by spearheading strategic economic initiatives for creating jobs and providing dynamic leadership to champion wealth creation for vulnerable population groups. A lawyer and development banker by training, his illustrious career, spanning close to three decades, has been a testament of people-centred leadership in a corporate setting.

Donkor focuses on implementation of change to drive progress not only in the West African sub-region, but also to stimulate a wider international impact through regional integration and engagement. Under his capable leadership, EBID has achieved several remarkable successes including balance sheet growth of 22% and 158% oversubscription of its 2021 UEMOA bond issuance concluded within 24hrs, both an indication of increased investor confidence.

Within two years of assumption of office as President of the Bank, Dr. Donkor, has recorded an impressive operational and financial performance to the admiration of all stakeholders.

Present at the Crans Montana ceremony were Rt. Hon. Sidie Mohamed Tunis, Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Ghana’s Ambassador to Switzerland, Emmanuel Kwame Asiedu Antwi as well as the Deputy Majority Leader of Ghana’s Parliament, Hon. Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, who is also a member of the ECOWAS Parliament.

EBID intervenes through long, medium, and short-term loans, equity participation, lines of credit, refinancing, financial engineering operations and related services.

Omo-Agege’s Time As Commissioner, Delta SSG Financially Disastrous, Says Okubor; Describes Okowa As An Astute Manager Of Resources

0

Former Delta State Commissioner for Information and Culture, Health,as well as Chief of Staff, Government House, Asaba, Dr Festus Okubor, has taken a swipe at the Deputy Senate President and Delta State Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, (APC )Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, for engaging in what he called callous mudslinging of the Delta State Governor, Sen. Ifeanyi Okowa, even as he described the tenure of the DSP in Delta State public service, as financially disastrous.

Dr. Okubor whose views were contained in a detailed and comprehensive write up on the recently held APC Presidential Rally/Flag Off of the governorship campaign held at the Warri township stadium and made available to the press on Tuesday, November 22, also condemned Omo-Agege,
the former National Chairman of APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and the leaders of APC in the State, for their deliberate and calculated attempts to peddle lies aimed at discrediting the State Governor, while misleading the people of the State.

Declaring that the latest preoccupation of those he termed “disgruntled leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State” is to discredit Governor Okowa and clothe him in the robe of a poor manager of resources who has squandered allocations to Delta State under his watch, Dr. Okubor however noted that this was a complete misrepresentation of the Delta State Governor.

According to him, “Those who know Governor Okowa will attest to his nobility of mind. Even those currently accusing him falsely know that Governor Okowa is a man of uncommon mettle whose sandals they are not worthy to undo in saner climes as they ought to be cooling of in jail for the many crimes they committed against the state from stealing from state treasury, extorting contractors and collecting money for ghost and unexecuted projects and for mace snatching.

“Certainly, public memory is not short and the internet never forgets. Those falsely accusing the highly respected Governor Okowa should google their names and that of the beloved Governor and they will see the infamous narratives around their names in contrasts to the nobility of spirit of the amiable Governor,” Okubor wrote.

While challenging those APC leaders peddling lies against Governor Okowa to subject their public service stewardship to scrutiny and auditing, Dr. Okubor described Omo-Agege and leaders of APC, as “ignorant and mischievous fellows”, and revealed that Senator Omo-Agege’s period first as Commissioner, Special Duties and then Secretary to the Delta State Government, was financially disastrous for the Government and People of the State, even as he explained in great detail, Omo-Agege’s alleged treacherous and corrupt tendencies.

“Omo-Agege’s House became a central bank where cooks made away with Ghana-must-go bags filled with money. His Orogun people will not forget how he extorted contractors and collected money for forty-eight projects that he didn’t execute. There were monies for hundreds of projects across the state that he seized using the tenders’ board.

“He thinks the people have forgotten. Is this the man wanting to be governor? The mace incident and his recruitment as a servant of the caliphate with him, a Chief kneeling to thank Buhari, remains repulsive to his people.”

Dr. Okubor also had some harsh words for former Edo State Governor and APC National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

He wrote this: “As for Adams Oshiomhole, he left Edo State in massive debt and destroyed the entire fabric of government. Governor Obaseki is still working to fix the catastrophe that Oshiomhole turned Edo State into. How he ran down the APC and embarrassed the nation before he was disgraced out of office is still fresh in our memory.

“Are these the men who should call out Governor Okowa on account of probity? Not at all. They lack what it takes,” Okubor explained and called on the general public, especially Deltans, to discountenance the ranting of Agege and Oshiomhole, noting that “They are raving in frustration as they are bound to have their day in the court of public morality,” he stated.

The former Delta State Government Chief of Staff, who is now a prominent chieftain of the PDP, also pointed out that the ongoing smear campaign against Governor Okowa, emerged from the “incoherent story by attention seeking Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, that President Muhammadu Buhari released monies accruing to Niger Delta States for the 13% deductions from derivation funds and that the infrastructural achievements of his government were made possible by the money President Buhari paid.

“Well, nobody needs to be told that Wike has become a sore loser and a weeping baby. The questions people should ask Wike are: when was the money released? Why did he not tell Nigerians when the money was paid? Why is he just telling them now? Wike is an advocate of bad politics which is unhealthy for the polity.

“His new activism without definition, boundary or ideology, is a product of the fact that he was beaten during the PDP presidential primaries and furthermore he lost woefully to the noble Governor Okowa of Delta State. Wike is fighting his homestead and people. He is bound to lose because no man ever wins against his people. The fact that none of the other five South-South governors associate with Wike points to the truth that he has been rejected at home,” the renowned politician stated in the article.

Okubor stated further that: “The rabidly desperate promoters of the Wike bad belle narrative are Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, Adams Oshiomhole and their BANDits of political desperadoes wanting to push Delta to the EDGE of disaster. What the duo and their minions are pushing into the public space is the narrative that Governor Okowa squandered 250 billion naira accruing from the 13 % derivation fund released by President Buhari.

“In their unthinking nature they pointed at the flyovers (were) built by Wike in Port-Harcourt, take note, in Port Harcourt and not any other part of Rivers State and asked Governor Okowa what he did with the money accruing to Delta State. Their query could be as a result of crass ignorance or deliberate mischief to mislead the public and score cheap points.

“These are certainly not the hallmarks of altruistic politicians or statesmen. Altruism is never desperate as the men have chosen to be. Governor Okowa remains an astute manager of men and resources. The fact that he does not mount the rooftop to announce with multiple megaphones the number of projects he has executed does not diminish his monumental and unsurpassed achievements as a Governor.

Explaining in greater detail, Dr. Okubor said: “The truth with Delta State is that about 340 billion naira is accruable to it, but it has not been earned. The refund they are talking about is 292 billion naira and the Federal Government promised to pay in sixty installments. This was why the State requested a drawdown of 150 billion naira and only 30 billion was recently drawn. So the talk about a hefty sum of 250 billion being mismanaged by Governor Okowa is a concocted political lie.

“Only an ignorant or mischievous fellow will compare Delta State with Rivers State in terms of infrastructure development and spread. Rivers State is 55 years old, while Delta is just 31. It means that Rivers State ought to have more infrastructure. But let us compare. Delta State has about thirty-one urban centres, the highest in any state in Nigeria. Rivers State has only Port-Harcourt which is where all the flyovers Agege and Oshiomhole are drooling over are located. Whatever development going on in Bonny Island is by joint venture and the Rivers Government refused to meet its obligation.

Reeling out the comprehensive developmental achivements of the Okowa administration, the former Delta Information Commissioner wrote: “The Delta State government under Governor Okowa has constructed 1,905 kilometers of roads and 1, 035 kilometers of drains. “Delta State is Nigeria’s frontrunner in human capital development, 14, 075 youth entrepreneurs have emerged, over 223, 000 employment created with about 1.3 million indirect jobs. Delta State is number one in contributory healthcare scheme with more than 1.2 million enrolled.

“The State has four universities and seven other tertiary institutions, the highest by any state in Nigeria. Roads have been built in the riverine communities for the first time and there are 16 bridges under construction with 6 others completed. The bridges are ambitious and cost intensive projects that will link the riverine communities with the world.

“The list of projects executed by the Governor Okowa administration will show the even distribution across the length and breadth of the State. There is a deliberate integration of urban and rural communities so that all Deltans will feel a sense of belonging. Were Governor Okowa to concentrate all the State’s resources in developing only Asaba, then the city would have overtaken Dubai or New York in beauty.

“Governor Okowa is conscious of his place as Governor of all and not a sectional leader like the Orhomuru-Orogun Senator who took all the projects meant for the entire Urhobo nation of twenty-four clans to his miniature sub-community of Orhomuru-Orogun,” the distinguished political leader and statesman concluded.

DELTA 2023: Sheriff Oborevwori and The New Deal

0

-By Dr. Ifeanyi M. Osuoza:

There is widespread excitement among the people of Delta State right now. The excitement has enveloped a good majority of the people in anticipation of what is really people’s moment come 2023. One man who has become a phenomenon is behind this exciting wind of anticipation. That man, the man of the moment and perhaps for all times is Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, present speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly and the Delta State Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria’s longest-surviving and most resilient political party ever, Africa’s largest political party and most pro-people organization.

Rt. Hon. Oborevwori did not emerge by happenstance. He has been on the political scene and undergone tutelage under three Governors in Delta State. He also has the rare privilege of legislative and executive experience and has over the years seen politics as a tool for constructively reshaping humanity and making life better for the people. This vision has not only evolved, but has become concrete as seen in his emergence as the PDP Governorship candidate of Delta State at a free and fair primary election.

Evolving with this man of destiny is the concept known as Sheriffication which has become an ideology and a movement in Delta State. Anywhere, everywhere and wherever you turn the agreement among the people, young and old, men and women is that Delta State has been Sheriffied. To be Sheriffied is to believe and embrace the idea of Sheriff Oborevwori becoming Governor of Delta State in 2023 and the concept is Sheriffication.

While the majority of Deltans hailed Oborevwori’s entry into the Governorship race with excitement, a small clique was displeased with what they considered Oborevwori’s near underprivileged background. This clique tried to discredit Oborevwori. They cast aspersions on him and questioned his academic achievements.

There were litigations intended to undo him and thwart the wish of the people for him to become their Governor. Good enough the litigations failed and the people’s desire to have Oborevwori as their Governor is gathering momentum. In a few months from now, the people will affirm him as the Governor of Delta State through the ballot. They will witness and celebrate his swearing-in and inauguration as Governor in May 2023.

The emergence of Oborevwori has a populist push to it. He came from among the people in every sense of the word. While some say that he came from the streets, they forget to see the streets as representing the true and real essence of the people. The street is where the people are and democracy is about the people.

The streets see Oborevwori as their own and he is very high on street credibility. He was born among the people, he grew up among them, lives with them and he knows their ways, their problems, their hopes, and aspirations. In him are the strategies with which to free the people from want, lack and set them on a pedestal for the new deal he is bringing to the table. Oborevwori is undoubtedly the ideal people’s politician and leader. His populist ideas and goals are unquestionably remarkable and unsurpassable.

The new deal Oborevwori is offering to Deltans is embodied in his manifesto aptly titled M.O.R.E. The acronym is symbolic because it recognizes that so much has been done in Delta State, but he is set to do MORE and take the State and people to the frontiers of the emergent New World order. The driving indices of MORE are Meaningful development, Opportunities for all, Realistic reforms, and Enhanced peace and security. Reading and evaluating the MORE agenda will reveal that Oborevwori has a deep understanding of what the development aspirations of Delta State are. Every Nation, every State is a work in progress always confronted by problems which right-thinking leaders who bear the burden of their people, like Oborevwori now does, are always desirous of remedying. The manifesto depicts Oborevwori as highly pro-people. MORE is the people’s agenda and in it, Oborevwori enunciates a new deal that will turn the State around for good.

The MORE agenda seeks to reposition Delta State and her people by engaging the core indices of modern development. Such indices under Meaningful development include education, energy, healthcare, physical infrastructure such as roads, transportation, housing, and new cities, rural development, urban regeneration, etc. The foci under Opportunities for all are employment and wealth creation, agricultural productivity, industrialization, ICT, sports, and creative enterprise. Realistic reforms will harness policies and programmes of Government for the good of the people, while peace and security will create an enabling environment for investment and social co-existence for all Deltans and other Nigerians and foreigners. Oborevwori deliberately deemphasizes the reliance on crude oil in articulating his development agenda. His dream of greatness and rebirth for Delta rests on her human capital and agricultural resources which are to be galvanized by education, energy, ICT, and industrialization.

Rt. Hon. Oborevwori, despite the tendency for political opponents to undermine his educational attainments, holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science Degrees in Political Science from two of Nigeria’s prestigious Universities. Thus Oborevwori is well-grounded in the theory and practice of politics. Besides his towering educational attainments, Oborevwori has also undergone political leadership and managerial trainings in some of the best educational institutions in the world to reinforce his hands-on engagement in practical politics.

The truth is that all of those who undermine Oborevwori lack his capacity in every imaginable parameter. Among the qualification and experience reinforcing his competence and capacity are: Certificate in Top Executive Leadership Programme, Manchester Business School, United Kingdom; Certificate in Legislative Framework for Budget Management, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, United States of America; Certificate in Legislative Management and Leadership, International Law Institute, Washington DC, United States of America; Certificate in Leading Inclusive Development, London School of Economics and Political Science, United Kingdom; Certificate in Advanced Leadership Programme, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom; among others.

It is doubtful if any other Nigerian politician has such a formidable attainment in the acquisition of knowledge of modern governance. This is the cumulative knowledge and experience that proposed the new deal for Delta State and her people. The new deal is in MORE as envisioned and articulated by Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.

Delta APC Rally and Political End Of The Road

0

-By Dr Kingsley Emu:

The All Progressives Congress (APC) rally that took place in Warri has more than anything else spelt the end of the road politically for the APC in Delta State and to a very large extent in Nigeria. A few days to the rally, there were no telltale signs that such an event was going to hold. There was no fanfare of any kind and party members were indifferent and those close to the Delta State APC governorship candidate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege were not even sure if the party’s presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu was going to attend. The governorship candidate, Senator Omo-Agege was also not sure. He painfully remembered how a few weeks ago, he and others waited endlessly for Tinubu who never showed up to their embarrassment. Agege was distraught and he confided in a handful of close supporters that should he lose the governorship election, he would be returning to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) his real party. He told his listeners that he was glad that his running mate, Hon. Friday Osanebi was also of the PDP stock. Agege then told them the story of how Tinubu abandoned him in his earlier quest to be governor of Delta State in 2011.

Having made so much noise abusing Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, the Delta State Governor and making so much hype about his own political prowess, Agege was now confronted with the reality of failure. He called and begged other party leaders nationwide for them to prevail on Tinubu to attend the Warri rally. His other headache was how to get Deltans to attend the rally. Information reaching him indicated that the people were not keen on attending the rally. He panicked and in desperation it was agreed that people should be heavily induced monetarily for them to attend. That was why Agege and his followers had to dole out money to ensure that people are mobilized form beyond Delta State in order to give an impression of a well attended rally. Buses and huge amounts of money were sent to every ward in Delta State. They sent words, buses and money to neighbouring states in order for them to hold a rally with the false impression of a big event.

Those who observed what happened at the rally would have seen the many disconnects that showed that the APC has reached a political dead end in Delta State.  Party leaders were absent. The only party leader from Delta Central prominent at the rally was Agege. The notable leader from Delta South at the rally was Agege. The political heavyweight of the party from Delta North was Agege. Those who spoke; Tinubu, Agege, Oshiomhole, etc, had nothing new to say other than to abuse Governor Okowa and the PDP. Tinubu who has become a slurring human contraption castigated Governor Okowa and abused Warri. He pointed at Lagos as a place that has benefitted from development. Oshiomhole, expired labour leader, disgraced former APC chairman and humiliated noisy ex-governor of Edo State also took a swipe at Governor Okowa and the PDP. He tried to compare Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State to Governor Okowa. Agege also spoke and called Governor Okowa a Judas Iscariot. The three men could only resort to abuse and name calling. They couldn’t tell the people gathered at the stadium what they will do for Delta State.

Now back to what the three men said about Governor Okowa and Delta State. Tinubu making reference to Lagos as an example of development is laughable. The humungous amount of money available to Lagos annually would transform the whole of Nigeria if well managed. And Tinubu should tell the world how much of Lagos money he collects monthly as the godfather. Tinubu’s idea of Lagos is restricted to a few places that the government of Nigeria built up many years ago. Lagos is not only about Ikoyi, Victoria Island and other such lush locations. Tinubu’s Lagos is the world’s dirtiest city. Tinubu’s Lagos is the capital of disorder and crime. Tinubu’s Lagos is home to squalor and over 17 million of the city’s 20 million people live in grinding poverty without portable water to drink. Tinubu’s Lagos is a frustrating city without roads befitting its size and revenue accruing to it. So, who is Tinubu deceiving?

Oshiomhole, faded and down, saw the Warri rally as an opportunity to talk, but he did so without thinking as usual. He compared Rivers State with Delta State pointing at infrastructure. Oshiomhole in his thoughtless ignorance didn’t know that Delta State is a multi-ethnic State with the highest number of urban centers in Nigeria. Delta State has about thirty urban centers where government’s development strides are seen. Unlike other states where governors focus on just the State capital, development is evenly spread in Delta State. Every rural community in Delta State is feeling government presence. Delta State has the highest number of state universities in Nigeria. The State has the highest number of functional hospitals in Nigeria. Delta in the last seven years has constructed about 1900 kilometers of roads the highest by any state government in Nigeria. So, what is Oshiomhole talking about?

Agege couldn’t tell the rally what his agenda is. Rather he took to his new hobby of abusing Governor Okowa. He called him a Judas Iscariot and asked him to step down from his vice presidential ticket. Should Agege call somebody a Judas? Agege who betrayed the whole of Southern Nigeria by working and voting for the candidacy of Alhaji Lawan, the Senate President at APC’s Presidential Convention? Agege who betrayed his greatest political benefactor, Great Ogboru? Agege who betrayed his old benefactor James Ibori by leaking sensitive documents? Agege who betrayed his Urhobo people in 2007 when they chose to vote for Ogboru? Agege who betrayed his Orogun people by extorting project contractors and chasing them away? Agege who stalled the execution of forty-eight projects in Orogun? Haba, those who live in glass house should not throw stones.

Agege’s heart is guilt laden. When Tinubu called his name and handed him the flag, he was neither happy nor able to laugh. He smiled weakly and tiredly raised his fists like a beaten boxer. Deep down in him he knew the end of the road is near. The crowd at the rally was also not enthusiastic. They didn’t wholeheartedly applaud Tinubu or Agege. Deltans know that the APC is alien and there is no room for it. They have long resolved that it is PDP, Atiku/Okowa and Oborevwori/Onyeme. When Tinubu said that Delta State was not an ATM for migratory politicians, he was unknowing hitting Agege hard because he is the most migratory of Delta State politicians. From PDP to AC to RPN to ACN to PDP to Labour Party to APC, no other Deltan has this unenviable history of political prostitution. This is the end of the road for him politically.

NDLEA arrests Saudi-bound widow with cocaine in footwears at Lagos airport

0

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a 56-year-old widow and mother of four, Mrs. Ajisegiri Sidika at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos over attempt to traffic 400 grammes of cocaine concealed in her footwear to Makkah, Saudi Arabia.

The suspect, who claimed to be a businesswoman trading in adults and childrens wears on Lagos Island, was intercepted on Sunday 13th November while trying to board a Qatar Airways flight going to Saudi Arabia via Doha, and upon a critical examination of the pair of sandals she was wearing, two parcels of cocaine weighing 400 grammes were recovered.

In the same vein, attempts by a tricycle parts seller, Ayoade Tayo to send 1 kilogramme of tramadol 225mg and Rohypnol to Istanbul, Turkey via Cairo on an Egypt Airline flight same day were also frustrated by NDLEA operatives who arrested him. He was at the airport to hand over the drugs hidden inside a bag of food items to an intending passenger, Idowu Ayoade but was arrested before he succeeded in doing that.

An intending passenger to Oman via Asky airline, Agbamuche Nkeonye and a lady, Adeoye Fatimo who accompanied him to present a bag containing varieties of foodstuffs and body lotion which were used to conceal 1.10 kilogrammes cannabis and some Rohypnol capsules were also arrested at the departure hall of the Lagos airport last Thursday.

Anti-narcotics officers attached to the SAHCO export shed of the airport equally foiled attempts by traffickers to smuggle consignments of cannabis and ecstasy tablets concealed in three tubers of yam going to Dubai, UAE last Wednesday. The freight agent who presented the yams for export, Inegbu Akunna was promptly arrested while the consignor, Ahmodu Sulaimon was also nabbed thereafter.

At the Brawal container shed of Kirikiri lighter terminal in Lagos, NDLEA operatives equally intercepted cartons of deadly drinks in a container marked APZU3671697 during a joint examination with Customs. Though the bill of lading indicated that the container originated from Cape town, South Africa, a search of the the shippers’ database showed it was loaded from Antwerp, Belgium.

A full inspection of the container last Thursday showed a total of five cartons of beverages labeled as Euphoria cannabis beer and three cartons of cannabis energy drink were found. Other drinks in the container include: 21 cartons of a drink labeled as monkey shoulder; 20 cartons of dead man’s finger; and 139 of champagne fruit, among others.

In a related development, not less than 5.6 kilogrammes of methamphetamine, cocaine and tramadol were discovered in items like play station, bicycles, motor propeller and local fabrics packaged for export to Australia and Cyprus through some courier firms in Lagos. Two suspects, Gabriel Emeka and Vintura Grillo have been arrested in a follow up operation linked to one of the seizures.

In Niger state, NDLEA operatives on stop and search operation along Mokwa-Jebba road on Saturday 12th November arrested two suspects; Ismail Musa and Jidda Abbas with 10,780 bottles of Akuskura, a new psychoactive substance concealed inside two Toyota Camry saloon cars marked AGL 861 GS Lagos and KMK 118 SC Bayelsa. The consignment loaded in Ibadan, Oyo state, was going to Abuja for distribution.

While operatives intercepted 25,000 capsules of tramadol in Plateau and arrested the owner, Ifeanyi Nweanwe, a beer parlour operator in a follow up operation in Bauchi, pharmaceutical opioids worth more than N30 million were intercepted in a commercial bus in Asaba, Delta state last Thursday.

In Ondo state, operatives stormed the Ijare forest, in Ifedore local government area last Friday where a total of 600.5 kilogrammes of cannabis weed and seeds were recovered, while 142.8 kilogrammes of the same substance were seized when NDLEA officers raided the zone 3 motor park in Wuse area of Abuja. Also, operatives on routine stop and search patrol along Owerri-Onitsha road arrested a suspect Nwankwo Emmanuel, with 25 blocks of cannabis sativa weighing 12.5 kilogrammes in a commercial bus going to Port Harcourt from Lagos.

In his reaction to the arrests and seizures in the past week, Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Retd), commended the officers and men of the MMIA, Tincan, Delta, FCT, Niger, Ondo, and Plateau Commands as well as those of the Directorate of Operations and General Investigations, DOGI, for their passion, commitment and remarkable efforts to get results in their areas of responsibility. He enjoined them and their compatriots across the country to stay focused and resilient in the pursuit of the agency’s corporate goal.

ECOWAS Makes Input in Nigeria’s 2023 General Elections, Sets to Train Stakeholders on Mediation

0

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission is set to make input in the forthcoming Nigeria’s election by holding a series of training and interactive workshops on dialogue and mediation as tools for preventing and mitigating election-related disputes and violence for political actors and stakeholders in the country.

The workshop, the Commission said is part of its strategic and operational support for the country’s peaceful 2023 General Election.

The workshop series, according to the statement made available to the media at the weekend by the Programme Officer, Mediation Directorate of Political Affairs, ECOWAS Commission, Mr. Brown Odigie, is billed to hold in some selected states across the six geo-political zones of the country.

The programme is targeted at the leadership of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) among others, and is aimed at strengthening their capacity to prevent and mitigate potential pre- and post-election-related disputes and violence, to ensure peaceful electoral outcomes.

It is also a follow-up to the ECOWAS’ October 23rd-November 12th, 2022 Pre-election Fact-Finding Mission to Nigeria which among others, assessed the level of preparation by relevant stakeholders for the forthcoming general elections while mapping out areas of potential support by ECOWAS.

The Commission explained that the programme is being held against the backdrop that electoral contestations have become a major source of conflicts in West Africa, with the potential for violence, triggered or heightened by the high premium on political power and incendiary rhetoric in political discourse.

It is expected that this series of training and interactive workshops will also create opportunities for stakeholders to understand better, the ECOWAS normative principles and frameworks for democracy and good governance, sustain and enhance ECOWAS’ strategic engagement with the political process in Nigeria as well as its commitment and determination to promote dialogue and mediation in resolving electoral disputes and conflicts.

The Commission had organized similar workshops in the lead-up to the 2019 general elections in Nigeria and around the electoral processes of several other Member States.

The training and interactive workshops are being supported with funding from the Government of the Kingdom of Denmark under the Danish Africa Programme for Peace.

The workshop is being organized by the Directorate of Political Affairs (DPA), Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security of the Commission, and will commence a series on the 22nd of November 2022 in Lagos, Nigeria

He added that: “In addition to these four strategic objectives, we have identified two enablers namely capable institutions and equitable partnerships, which would facilitate the realization of our objectives.”

Touray said: “Let me quickly add that our four strategic objectives are already aligned with the Community Strategic Framework (CSF), which has been developed for the realization of the ECOWAS Vision 2050.

“We intend to focus on strengthening the ECOWAS Peace and Security Architecture and achieving results related to; The Implementation Plan against Terrorism (on this we would like to invite you to support us with the full realization of the one billion dollars Pool Fund which our Members Pledged).

“The full operationalization of the ECOWAS Maritime security Architecture, the full operationalization of the National Early Warning and Response Centers, Building the mediation and rapid response capacity of ECOWAS.”

He also said that the second strategic objective is to deepen Regional Integration through the promotion and enhancement of intra-community trade, free movement of people, and the monetary Union, insisting that: “Specific deliverables for the next four years under this pillar will include; Reducing tariff and non-tariff barriers (through the effective deployment of the ETLS Task Force).

“Full operationalization of the regional payment system, introduction of ECO-Visa, implementation to concrete border projects under the ECOWAS Cross Border Programme, among others.”

Touray said on the third strategic objective of Good Governance, the Community budget will focus on building stronger regimes against anti-constitutional change of government and support Member States to deepen democracy.

He noted that: “Here, our specific deliverables in the next four years will include; completing the transition to democracy in Burkina Faso, Mali and Guinea. Enhancing our election support to Member states including observation mission.

“Strengthening ECOWAS Court and the ECOWAS Parliament to play their democratic roles. Instituting a broader mandate for intervention as a strong measure against anti-constitutional change of government.”

Touray disclosed that the fourth strategic objective is Inclusive and Sustainable Development which covers gender and social programmes, infrastructure and environment, revealing that: “In the next four years, we intend to invest in Food security, including further increase in the stock of our Regional Food Security Reserve.

“And the implementation of the ECOWAS rice Offensive Action Plan (2022-2025) to reduce our dependence on imports, as exposed by the Ukraine-Russia war.”

Declaring the meeting open, Chair of the AFC, Ms. Silva Cristina disclosed that the meeting is aimed at assessing the community budget to ensure that community resources and efficiently used for the betterment of ECOWAS citizens.

She said that: “The main objective of this year-end meeting is to consider and validate our budget, it is also to ensure the technical and financial monitoring of the year under review, 2022 budget.

“And our work will be to ensure that the strategic objectives of the community are being met. We are invited to look at the medium-term expenditure frame-work, 2023 to 2025.”

She added that: “We are of the view that this exercise will only be easy if we look at it against the background of economic framework which ahs been strongly marred by the pandemic and also persistent non-enforcement of the protocol of the community levy on all product.

“Our community depends of the outcomes of the outcomes of this deliberation. That is why the honourable members of AFC have to make constructive and concrete contributions. Which will enable us to make progress and also ensure that the community resources are efficiently used.”

LP ASSEMBLY CANDIDATE VOWS TO  ELECTRIFY BOMADI COMMUNITIES

-By Harrison Akamule:

House of Assembly candidate of the Labour Party (LP) for Bomadi State Constituency, Delta State, Mr Poweide Foburuku, says he’ll prioritize access to electricity for maximum benefit of all communities in Bomadi Local Government Area.

“I will therefore cultivate rapport with the executive arm of government and work with other legislators in the Assembly from riverine areas to seek support secure legislation that will make government declare an emergency on access to steady electricity in the area long deprived of same”, he said.

Fobruku said “government declaration of emergency on electricity not only hold the potential to generate employment in many spheres and guarantee security, it can boost revenue generation for government via taxation and halt rural-urban drift”, adding: “It is thus an harbinger of positive socio-economic development”.

“The benefits that come with the simple electrical bulbs, television, computers and now cell phones are yet to trickle down to my people for lack of access to steady electricity”, Foburuku, who read electrical/electronics engineering, lamented.

The LP House of Assembly Candidate said with electricity, the people of Bomadi LGA can be empowered with unique technical and digital skills to prepare them for the benefits the robust gig economy already holds out to this and the incoming generation.

“I will attract and decentralize Technical and Digital Skills Training Centres to make them close to the people so especially our youths can keep up with a fast-paced digital world”, he promised.

2022 World Orphan Day: Dame Okowa Fetes Over 50 Orphanage Homes In Delta

0

Wife of Delta state governor, Dame Edith Okowa, has celebrated the World Orphanage Day in Asaba, the state capital.

The global event held at Government House on Monday witnessed the presentation of food items to 50 orphanage homes and four adopted families.

The food items presented to repreincludes bags of rice, bags of beans, tubers of yam, palm oil, noodles and others. Representatives of the homes were present to receive the items from the governor’s wife.

During the presentation of the items, she called on mothers, caregivers and others to continue to do good to people, especially to children who might not be able to repay them back.

Dame Okowa said the day was set aside by the United Nations to honour Mother Theresa who showed love to the less privileged children during her lifetime. She said the day is dedicated to her because of her good works.

She said the day is to evaluate the way we treat children both in our homes and society generally. She added that the reason we are alive is that God needed us to serve humanity.

According to her: “We should keep doing good. Whatever good you are doing, keep doing it. Do not mind what you hear or what you see. What people say about us should not deter us from doing good.

“Let’s continue to spread love everywhere we find ourselves. There’s a reward for all we do for God.”

The governor’s wife who said the November 2022 edition is the seventh since the commencement of the programme in 2016, noted that God has been faithful to the 05 Initiative through which needs of children have been met.

She commended the contribution of Jim Ovia, Chairman of Zenith Bank, Dr. Victor Osiatuma, Chief Medical Director of Federal Medical Director, Asaba and others who have been of help to the uplift of the less privileged in the state.

Earlier, Venerable Charles Osemene, Chaplain of the Government House Chapel, had admonished well meaning Nigerians to show love to orphans and the less privileged people around them.

Taking his leading text from James chapter 1 verse 27, Venerable Osemene titled his short setmon “Show Some Love, Show Some Care.” In the teaching, he advised caregivers in orphanage homes not to exploit the children but care for them.

He said some caregivers exploit the children, take advantage of them and abuse them. He said what belongs to them most times do not get to them. This, he said, is wrong.

He said rather than exploit and take advantage of them, “we should should show love, care for them, encourage them and add joy to their lives.”

Engr. Poweide Arepade Foburuku: Grassroots Mobilizer, Leader

0

.………Engr. Poweide who was born into the family of six is passionate about rural development said “I am always this kind of person that, what I’m afraid of , I don’t runaway from it, I go down straight try to resolve it until it’s solved , challenges empower me, challenges are just another way for me to improve , I don’t runaway from responsibilities , meet my responsibilities until it’s resolved., that has been the driving force that pushed me to where I am in life”

-By Harrison Akamule:

In a world that is going digital every passing minute, analogue approaches cannot proffer solutions to digital challenges that constantly confront man.

That accounts for the reason why youthful leadership and representation across the three tiers of governance should be given the needed support in Nigeria if we must catch up with the global trend.

It is in that light that Engr. Poweide Arepade Foburuku, an Electrical/Electronic guru has declared his intention to represent the Bomadi Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly 2023.

As a computer hardware and software engineer, he burns with the passion to revolutionalize legislative representation from analogue to the digital space where the constituents have a say in government as against the current tide where the electorates have no voice after elections.

A grassroots mobilizer and leader, the leadership abilities of Engr. Poweide Foburuku has been tested and proven, dating back to his primary school days as Excellent pupil in Onurun Primary School, Ogriagbene down to his secondary school as a Library  Prefect, Government Mixed Model College, Bomadi. Bomadi LGA, Delta state, and his days in Petroleum Training Institute (PTI ) Effurun – Warri, Delta State where he was one time the Izon -Ebe president, was also the social director and Provost of his department Electrical / Electronic in the school.

Having utilized these leadership avenues, Engr. Poweide Arepade Foburuku has taught it necessary to explore the political space under the aegis of the Labour Party to seek representation into the Delta State House of Assembly with a bid to altering the current political narrative of exclusion to inclusion of the masses in the electioneering and governance process. According to him, “My drive have always being how do we change the lives of our people, how do we improve the life of the people? If there was going to be any effective positive change, it was going to be done by youths”.

Engr. Poweide therefore , without hesitation, beckons on the well meaning people of Bomadi L.G.A to give him a chance to bring to the fore his wealth of experience as a grassroots leader and influencer that will better the people of the local government.

To him,  the need for youthful representation is paramount as the current generation of youths seems to be missing out in the nation’s scheme of events. It is therefore only pertinent that youths be given a place in governance to fill in the missing link.

Furthermore, the name Poweide connotes joy. Hon. Poweide’s birth brought joy  and fulfilment to the family of Mr Foburuku Arepade and portends same for the people of Bomadi State Constituency which he seeks to represent in 2023.

A common phenomenon runs through mediocres who hide under the mask of rural environment to remain unproductive, but Hon. Poweide has weathered the limitations posed by the village environment to explore and appropriate adequately the opportunities in the global community. As an Engineer, he has proven beyond doubt that his mind is programmed for ultimate success. He has established the fact that living in the village does not make one a failure-it is  failure mentality that limits one. For Engr. . Poweide, he has conquered the failure mindset and has invested his time productively for himself and for the society.

His ideologies and manifesto promises quality representation he will give the people of Bomadi in the programmes for youths, women, health, vulnerable persons and indeed infrastructural development.

In one of the fora, Mr. Poweide Foburuku said all candidates bearing the party’s flag in the forthcoming general election are driven by a passionate desire to effect positive change in the country. He noted: “From the first to the last, we are being motivated by our presidential flag bearer, Mr. Peter Obi, who is determined to make a real change in Nigeria”, he told newsmen in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

Engr.  Foburuku expressed joy over the successful primaries, verification and listing of his name as a candidate by INEC in the State. On the low participation of youths in election processes across the country, he expressed his determination to inspire and mobilize youths to come out enmasse and participate fully in the forthcoming general election. According to him, “youths should engage fully in different political positions in the country so as to make a visible change in the nation’s politics. You cannot make a change if you are outside the processes. When you are involved, you would be able to make a change that will enable people to come out of this political quagmire”.

“We need to dwell more on education of our people because we want them to be more educated and focused. If given a chance to represent my constituents at the State Assembly, I will sponsor bills that will be beneficial to the people and such that will attract development to the area. The forthcoming general elections in the country will be treated with much seriousness. We (youths) are against whatever that is wrong with the system of governance. This is our own chance to make corrections in the system of governance and the only way to make such corrections is to partake fully in the process of elections.  I intend to reach out to more in the area of education, to enable the people see the qualities in me that will make them have hope in my candidacy. I will teach them on the need of not selling their votes on election days, that things have actually changed and their wise choice of candidate to cast votes must be done in the right place”. Engr. Poweide urged the electorates to vote with their conscience and not vote a candidate for pecuniary gains”.

“Now is the time, wake up, and understand that there is need to get your Permanent Voters Card (PVC) to enable you exercise your franchise by voting who you want come 2023.

“Anything that happens after that will make you know that you caused it and you were part of it. In Bomadi constituency, there are so many things still undone and they need to be done especially in the area of constructing bridges that will enable the people carry out their duties. Those things are our driving force because there are so many things that need to be done there. So I have taken it upon myself to make these changes by trying to see that there is electricity; to educate the youths to be serious with education and make the necessary consultations to better the state of our roads.” I am driven-by-need-for-positive-change. Foburuku said.

Engr.

For the forgone paragraphs, it is crystal clear that the young Engineer needs the attention of his constituents to help him get the chance to make his move to the Delta State House Of  Assembly easy. The dexterity of Engr. Poweide to opt for DTHA seat at  his age should be commended and encouraged by the good people of Bomadi Constituency in kind or cast.

2023: That Atiku was stoned in Borno?

0

-By: James Bwala:

For days now, I have been asking questions both from modest APC supporters and that of the PDP – the two major political party that have taken us from 1999 to where we are now. I have been studying political rallies since the return of democracy in Nigeria and have joined the convey of governors from late Mala Kachallah aka Champion of Peace (COP) to Senator Ali Modu Sheriff aka SAS and Kashim Shettima aka KSM.

I was not there to go out with Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, the current governor of Borno state even though I was at some occasion invited to join the convey as a journalist but for personal reasons to which I declined. However, I have been a keen observer and watched closely on the activities of the Borno state governor from the first step in power to date. Those who knew me very well can attests to this anticident.

I have written severally about Zulum at every occasion of his outing, defended his course and championed his ambition over these periods. I have not come to the knowledge that he has supported or promoted rascalism. Infact, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum has disband what we know in Borno state as ECOMOG, a youth vanguard that come alive during the Modu Sheriff administration.

The disbandment of these group of party die-hard was informed by his desire to fashion a peaceful state as we gradually move towards the greatness that our former governor and Vice Presidential Candidate, Senator Kashim Shettima had dreamt of, – ‘That Borno will be great again.’

Since the arrest of the situation of the ECOMOG radicalism, Borno state indeed was breathing fresh air. But one wonders what happened in the recent days that such politically aided youths come about. This time however, they were not supporters of the ruling party. That shows that they might have migrated to where they feel a honey comb can aid their growth to another monsters for yet another disaster.

They have terrorised APC supporters with such audacity and there was no favour returned. This was because the governor of Borno state has restrain supporters from the party from reacting to such provocations. They were sponsored to boo the governor recently in Bama and Biu local government areas and indeed called the governor names through misinformation as the issue of “2 million” rant the air during his visit to Biu local government where he proudly commissioned many people oriented projects.

Recently, the attacked a Senator and some members of the House of Representatives in Gwoza local government area of the state when we thought that with the experiences we all pass through as a result of the decade of insurgency, our people should be wiser to avoid such issues as violence. While I was wondering about the alledged attacked recently on former VP Atiku Abubakar as claimed the the PDP spokes man and former Senator Dino Melaye, I was not surprise by that move political to discredit the APC in Borno state knowing that it was home for the APC Vice Presidential Candidate Senator Kashim Shettima.

Although the Police have made some arrest of an about to throw stone, information emerging following that episode reveals that there was a provocation from the thugs accompanying the former VP Atiku Abubakar when he arrived the state.

Dr. Gadai, a Political analyst and keen watcher of events around political parties in Borno in his peace asked some fundamental questions: “Are you aware that the PDP itself had organised ECOMOGS and imported thugs from the neighbouring States to disturb the peaceful people of Borno State? Are you also aware that the PDP thugs are the ones that started destroying APC’s campaign structures along Bulunkutu to the Shehu’s Palace? Just recently, in an official visit to Bama and Biu, the tail of his Excellency’s convoy was attacked by organised PDP thugs.” The lines of his arguments went on. The question is that, if truly there has been a Peace Accord signed by all parties why are we seeing the emergence of political violence at our corridors?

Many statements to which I read on the current political happenings in Borno state and videos shared of political outing has passed judgement on the PDP and it’s supporters as agitators of political disorder. There was no a place where the party’s gubernatorial candidate went in Borno state that there were reports of his convoy being attacked.

However, rather than appreciating the people of Borno state who are willing to ensure a Peace election takes place, the move to reintroduce ECOMOG did not speak well of the attention the PDP wants to bring to suggest their movement around people who had suffered years of trauma in this rather unattractive situation.

World Igbo Congress in Gabon refutes Kidnapping Report of Nigerian Woman in Gabon

0

-By Sunday Ikuesan:

The World Igbo Congress, the apex Igbo socio-cultural group in Gabon has refuted the claims of the kidnapping report of a Nigerian woman of Igbo extradition named Mrs Cynthia Njoku Edmund Uzomain Gabon.

The group hinted that their rejoinder followed a news story by an online newspaper that the consular officer of Nigeria Embassy in Gabon, Mr Godwin OgboleOkologo held Mrs Cynthia Njoku Edmund Uzoma inan undisclosed location is a complete fallacy. The group averted that nothing of such ever happened in Gabon, according to the group, every allegation was an absolute imagination of the writer.

According to the group, it was the lady that went to theEmbassy of Nigerian in Gabon to report the unscrupulous attitude of her husband Njoku Edmund Uzoma on allegations of domestic violence and marital unfaithfulness. This was after the matter was unresolved by other Nigerian social groups like the Nigerian National Union and others. They buttressed that based on her complaint at Nigerian Embassy, the consular summoned notable Igbo chiefs and elders to advocate into the matter in order to arrive at peaceful resolution but Njoku Edmund Uzoma was always very hostile and violent at the whole arrangements. It was related to our reporter that among those present at the resolution meeting were Chief Tobias Anyanwu, president of Igbo World Congress, Chief John Ilekuba, Nze Nwandulo, Elder Obed C. Osuigwe, Mr Einnihiteand host of others.

It acknowledges the efforts of the consular officer of Nigerian Embassy in Gabon Mr Godwin OgboleOkologo toward the welfare of Nigerians in Gabon.

The group averted that Njoku Edmund Uzoma took his hostility so far by conniving with his friends at the Gabon immigration department to attempt thedeportation of his wife illegally against all odds, but the later escaped the bundled attempt and ran to Nigerian Embassy once again for protégé. However the consular officer directed Mr Njoku Edmund Uzomapay the hospital bills of the injuries his wife incurred as a result of the pogrom.

In the final resolution of the Embassy in the presenceof notable Nigerians in Gabon, notably leaders of World Igbo Congress, Leaders of Nigerian National Union, the consular officer opinion that since the marriage was contracted in Nigeria, it would be a lasting peace if the couple could travelled togetherback to Nigerian so that Mr Njoku Edmund Uzomamay personally hand over his wife back to her familyinstead of his modus operandi to the issue of separation of marriage.

As at the time of writing this report, Mrs Cynthia Njoku Edmund Uzoma is already in Nigeria. She is currently at Orlu in Imo state and not being kidnapped or missing as insinuated by the callous bloggers.

According to a statement on Friday by the spokesman of the Nigeria’s anti-narcotics agency. 2023: Isoko North PDP Flags Off Campaign Council Next Week

0

Chairman of Isoko North Campaign Council of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Hon Mike Ogwah has explained why the body is yet to take off with its assignment.

According to him, the campaign council deliberately delayed its take off in order to accommodate interests of aspirants who failed in the primary election and were recently coopted fully into the leadership of the party.

Hon Ogwah dropped the hint at an enlarged meeting of the campaign council, which included coordinators of the various wards that took place at Owhelogbo in Isoko North Local Government Area (LGA) of Delta State.

The chairman’s explanation is contained in a statement signed by Comrade Felix Ofou, Director of Media and Publicity of the campaign council, which also indicated the final take off the assignment given to it by the party.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the campaign council asked the coordinators to continue the house to house campaign in their wards ahead of the senatorial campaign expected to kick off soon.

Ogwah restated the party’s resolve to ensure victory for all its candidates in the 2023 general elections, in particular, Hon Bernard Odior for House of Assembly and Engineer Jonathan Ukodhiko for the House of Representatives in Abuja.

“We cannot afford to lose any of our candidates in next year’s elections. The Atiku/Okowa project is a divine mandate. Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori is already in the hands of God. Likewise Hon Mike Diden (Ejele). But we must not forget that Odior and Ukodhiko also part of project. It is 5/5 all the way” he declared

From Sunny DAVIDS/Awka:

It has been confirmed that four persons have been feared dead following an explosion at the Chemical Market in Onitsha Local Government Area of Anambra State on Tuesday and the market closed down on Wednesday.

Twelve persons were also said to have sustained various degrees of injury, with goods and properties worth millions of naira destroyed during the inferno.

Our correspondent gathered that after the explosion occurred at about 12:45 pm, a stampede ensued at the market as traders fled to safety.

According to eyewitnesses, traders opened their shops for their daily business activities when a loud explosion, like a bomb blast, was heard. Thick smoke was said to be coming from many shops and pandemonium ensued as the chemical products are highly inflammable.

When contacted via the telephone, the Police Public Relations Officer in the State, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, said the casualty figure was yet to be ascertained.

The Police Spokesman said there were reports that more people have been killed, but he has not been properly briefed on the incident.

However, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP John Ogbodoaga, has taken charge of the area and the fire service team was also on the ground.

Similarly, Policemen from the Fegge Divisional Police Station led by CSP Rabiu Garuba, were deployed to the market to guarantee the security of goods and other properties belonging to the traders

Nigeria seeks collaboration among African countries on drug war

0

The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen.Buba Marwa (Retd) has said seamless exchange of intelligence and strengthened collaboration among African countries will help the continent surmount the daunting challenge of illicit drug trafficking and abuse on the continent.

Marwa made the position at the ongoing 30th Conference of Heads of Drug Law Enforcement Agencies Africa (HONLEA) in Nairobi, Kenya.

Marwa while briefing the meeting, which seems to support his call for collaboration,
on the gains so far recorded by Nigeria in the fight against drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking said there is the need for all to put in place a national coordination mechanism that will ensure coordinated action against the menace.

According to him, “The starting point is the harnessing of all the stakeholders by the national drug focal agency. Through this national coordination and collaborative effort, Nigeria has steadily made significant efforts in tackling drug challenges and has between January 2021 and August 2022, recorded unprecedented arrests, in the region of 21,302 suspected drug traffickers, including 28 drug barons. In the area of prosecution, the agency has secured 3,111 convictions, and seized 5.4 million kilogrammes of illicit substances. On Drug Demand Reduction, the Agency within the same period had brief interventions, counselling/rehabilitation for over 12,326 drug users.”

The NDLEA boss while canvassing for regional and sub-regional collaboration, said “the global drug problem has placed higher demands on countries to work round the clock to achieve this goal and consolidate the achievements recorded. It is on the above premise that my delegation is proposing strengthened collaboration at both regional and sub-regional levels. This noble objective could be realized with the creation of an informal network of HONLEA contact persons to complement and enhance real time exchange of intelligence or operational information.

“It will also enhance more robust activities all year round. At the sub-regional level, countries should endeavour to establish sub-regional group like HONLEA for strengthened collaboration under the auspices of the regional economic communities.”

Marwa told the gathering that “the HONLEA platform offers unlimited opportunities, and it is imperative to maximize these amazing benefits by completing it with practical form of cooperation such as the suggested HONLEA Informal Network of Contact Persons. This would enable regular bilateral meetings, training programmes, exchange of intelligence, and the conduct of joint operations at sub-regional and regional levels, if need be.”

He said this, Nigeria has done by taking practical steps to deepen collaboration at both national and international levels in countering the world drug problem in line with the principle of common and shared responsibility, insisting that: “This was done through bilateral visitations and discussions that culminated in the signing of Memorandums of Understanding with countries and organizations. Thus, Nigeria’s statement is anchored on the need to deepen collaboration to fighting a common challenge as the world is taken by storm with the exponential increase in drug trafficking and use.”

He expressed optimism that the canvassed synergy will facilitate the speedy dismantling of drug trafficking cartels across Africa through a more vibrant HONLEA platform.

The NDLEA boss was earlier elected unanimously the Vice Chairman of the conference chaired by the host country, Kenya.

PDP, BALA MOHAMMED AND HIS NEW FOUND FRIENDS

0

-By Austen Akhagbeme:

The dragnet of crises engulfing the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, that led to the emergence of a dissenting faction popularly known as the G-5, caught another big fish yesterday in the person of the disgruntled Governor of Bauchi state, Senator Bala Mohammed.

Never in the history of the party have they had it so bad as they are witnessing now. The axe to grind remains the strong desire for the removal of the party chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, to pave the way to what the G-5 members referred to as ” equity and Justice within the party” as a person of southern extraction replaces him.

Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, who for long had been seething with discontent, couldn’t wish for anything better than this strange hand of friendship being extended to him by his fellow governors and embattled party chieftains.

The Bauchi state governor is already seeing the handwriting on the wall as regards his bid for a second term in office, and because politics is local, everything and anything must be done to capture the grassroots that has already been instigated and poisoned against him.

So when the ubiquitous Governor Nyesom Wike and his friends came calling, Senator Mohammed saw it as an opportunity to openly identify with them against a perceived common enemy within the party. In a state where the banana peel prevents incumbent governors from making a comeback, Bala Mohammed sure needs the support and doggedness of a Nyesom Wike and his friends to get a second term in office.

With another governor from the North East embracing the circuit of dissent within the party, the presidential campaign of the PDP is speedily taking a nosedive by the second, yet, the haughty leadership of the party remains egotistical in taming the tide.

How on earth can a party allow her six serving Governors to disassociate from a common campaign train aimed at capturing back the reins of power from an incumbent government and can still go to bed with her two eyes closed? This is truly unimaginable.

Is the situation irredeemable? In Nigerian politics and with Nigerian politicians, anything is possible. Just as we have former PDP warlords now as APC defenders and vice-versa, anything is still possible. May someone whisper this to the aged ears of the Waziri himself.

Flood: Delta records 22 new babies in IDP camps

Delta Government on Wednesday said it recorded 22 new born babies at the various internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in the state.

Secretary to the State Government and Chairman of the Inter-ministerial Flood Management Committee, Chief Patrick Ukah disclosed this at a news conference in Asaba.

He said that the loss recorded by the state would have been more catastrophic if not for the proactiveness of the state government.

According to him, it is interesting to note that this year’s flood is far more than what we experienced in 2012 but we give God the glory that the proactiveness of the state government has really helped us in managing this year’s flood.

“We started our sensitization very early and we had stakeholders engagement with traditional rulers, community leadership, school and everybody that we needed to meet.

“Many people responded by moving away from the low planes but as expected some people who hold some traditional beliefs held on to their ancestral homes.

“But through our proactiveness the Ministry of Environment was directed to open up the cannals leading to the Niger River and DESOPADEC was also handy in this regard as they opened up cannals around their own operational areas.

“We were able to set up 4 camps by DESOPADEC and 8 camps by the state government and we had about 21,000 IDPS in those eight camps and over 17000 in areas where DESOPADEC set up their own IDPs camps,” he said.

He said the South and Central Senatorial Districts were most impacted by the flood but thanked God the state government was able to move the affected victims to the IDP camps.

He commended the private sector response to the flood disaster, assuring that the state government would soon publish the names of the private sector donors in a full page advertorial in the newspapers for the state to appreciate them individually.

“Now that the water has started receding and we have started planning their exit, by the grace of God we will do whatever it takes to assist them to get back to normal life irrespective of whatever they must have lossed to the flood.

“We thank God that we didn’t have so many deaths and we hada lot of deliveries up to 22 babies in the different camps.

Yes we recorded some deaths and we are still compiling bt we recorded one death at Onne camp and it had nothing to do with the flood it was basically the personally illness that the person had before now.

In Patani, some travellers lost their lives while travelling towards the Port Harcourt Bayelsa Road, while 4 deaths were recorded in Isoko and one in Ugbolu.

“Apart from these deaths our camps remains very active and by the grace of God we have continued to keep them very happy and we hope to continue doing so until we come to the end of camp which by the grace of God is in sight,” Ukah stated.

He said the loss associated with flood was unquantifiable adding that the state government was yet to receive any money from FG other than some relief items from NEMA.

He said the NIMET flood projection for 2023 would be bigger than that of 2022 and called on the Federal Government to consider dredging the River Niger and Benue as well as building holding dams to cushion the effect of flooding in the country.

2023: You can’t stop Okowa’s ambition, PDP tells Omo-Agege

The Peoples Democratic Party PDP in Delta State on Wednesday slammed Deputy President of the Senate and All Progressives Congress APC Governorship candidate in the state, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, over comments threatening to terminate Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s Vice-Presidential ambition.

In a statement by the Chairman Media and Publicity Committee of the PDP Campaign Council in Delta, Chief Emman Amgbaduba, the party said Omo-Agege lacked powers to stop Okowa’s vice-presidential bid.

Amgbaduba, who is Commissioner for Oil and Gas in the state, said that Omo-Agege’s verbal attacks on Okowa were the last kick of a dying horse, adding that the PDP would retire him from politics in 2023.

He said that it was numb for the DSP to have made allusions of a third term agenda by Governor Okowa, and described it as mischievous propagation by the APC governorship candidate.

“We have watched Omo-Agege boasting about terminating Okowa’s Vice-Presidential ambition and also accusing him of having a third term agenda.

“First, Okowa has no such agenda as the PDP has a well respected governorship candidate in the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Chief Sheriff Oborevwori.

“Instead of Omo-Agege to tell Deltans about his agenda for the development of the state, he goes about boasting about how he will terminate Okowa’s ambition to become vice-president.

“The last time I checked, Okowa isn’t in the ballot with him for the Delta guber race and let me make it clear to him that PDP with the support of the people will teach him a political lesson in 2023.

“We will help him retire to his Orogun village were he channeled the little projects and institutions he managed to attract to his Senatorial District,” Amgbaduba said.

He said Omo-Agege who supported Senate President, Ahmed Lawan for President cannot do a volte-face to accuse Okowa of betraying Southern Nigeria.

“Okowa didn’t betray anybody, the party threw its ticket open and a Northerner in Atiku Abubakar won the ticket and constitutionally a Vice presidential candidate must emerge from the South and Okowa was found worthy after careful evaluation by the candidate and the party.

“Rather than rejoice with Okowa and put political sentiments aside to ensure that a Deltan emerged Vice-President in 2023, he is busy lying to Deltans about an alleged betrayal that never existed,” he stated.

He called on party faithful and Deltans to disregard Omo-Agege’s phantom lies and support the PDP to rescue, reset and rebuild the country from the deep valley the APC had led the country into.
