“I returned from work and found out that the food they had was not enough for them. I stepped out to collect money from a client so I could get something for them. But when I came back, I discovered she wasn’t alone at home. She was with two men that I don’t know.

INSECURITY: THE SHEIKH GUMI’S ALTERNATIVE

-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –From Austen AKHAGBEME:

UNUSUAL times have a way of breeding and bringing up unusual solutions from unusual sources by unusual people.

The above aptly describes the scenario that prompt up the strange visitation of the Kaduna based Islamic Clergy, Sheikh Gumi, to the bandits’ den in the North West recently.

Negotiating with a violent and deadly opposition, be they terrorists, bandits, secessionists, pirates or armed militias for the sake of peace, is not anything new to the world. What is rather strange is going for this controversial option against the background of the truth that such moves are hardly successful in our clime.

Is it not rather too hasty for such defeatists considerations when up until now, no one can particularly tell us what their demands were before the Sheikh ‘s visitation?

The Sheikh, after his visit came up with an option that suggests that the problem of banditry in north west is fundamentally an economic problem. Hence part of his suggestion was to use the regular security votes by the state government, to empower these bigots.

He went further to describe their action as insurrection rather than banditry and this is alarming. If it is truly a problem of insurrection as the clergyman observed, will it be a wise decision to engage with them in a dialogue instead of allowing it to grow into another deadly and costly distraction for us as a nation and for the already overwhelmed military who are seriously and daily engaged in the north East?

Again, won’t that be sending the wrong signals to such other groups in the future as this will be misconstrued to be an inherent weakness of governance and tired leadership and a money spinner for lovers of violence and their collaborators?

Those who suggests that the government should match the bandits, violence for violence, have a point. Apart from the late President Yar’Adua, who with a providential touch, brokered peace successfully with the Niger Delta militants in a round table, with a robust amnesty programme, no negotiations or attempted negotiations has ever worked in Nigeria as it were.

Be that as it may, the indolence and slow response to serious issues that pertains to life and death on the part of our present drivers is another self inflicted hurdle in this matter.

Let someone help me tell the authorities to take a side earlier, quicker, faster than ever before. We cannot afford to have a repeat of what is going on in the north East, here in the north West. The time to act is now.

He noted that as a major stakeholder in the provision of security and safety, as well as the preservation of health and wellbeing of Nigerians, all hand must be on deck to support the good intention of government in the face of the widespread and rising numbers of COVID-19 cases in Nigeria.

Madu charged each state command to internalize the directive by ensuring absolute compliance of all personnel to the COVID-19 protocols in their respective states and zones to keep safe at the frontline while enforcing the guidelines for preventing the spread and containment of the COVID-19 virus.

The Acting CG further directed the stepping up of sensitization and citizen’s enlightenment campaign to encourage adherents to the COVID-19 guidelines to take responsibility in ensuring that they stay safe with their loved ones, warning that the second wave of the pandemic must not be treated with kid gloves but with all sense of responsibility and seriousness.

He lamented that the new variant of the virus has proven to be more deadly and fast becoming widespread in the country due to the indifferent attitude of the people to the scourge.

N400bn Too Much, I Can Help FG Procure Vaccines For N150bn –Peter Obi Boasts

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –From Sunny A. DAVID/ South-East Bureau:

Former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi says Nigeria doesn’t need more than N150 billion to procure COVID-19 vaccines.

Commenting on the issue when he featured on Television programme on Tuesday, Mr. Obi said there are issues of transparency regarding the procurement of vaccines.

The Ex-governor said Nigeria would not have needed to spend so much in procuring vaccines if its National Vaccine Production Facility was operational.

“The issue of vaccine is one that I feel a sense of pain. Nigeria as a country in 1940 established what we called National Vaccine Production Facility domiciled in Yaba, and that was able to produce virtually all the vaccines we used in the days of smallpox, yellow fever, and that facility was shut down in 1991 to be refurbished and upgraded, there was nothing wrong with it,” he stated.

“And till today that has been the case deliberately so that people can import vaccines and sell to the government.

“Now I hear that we are looking for N400bn. Well, I am at loss. Our budget this year for health is N547bn. I don’t know if they are going to take this vaccine procurement from it, because if they do, we are left with N147bn.

“For the vaccine procurement also, we need to have transparency in the procurement. Today, vaccine in India costs between $2 25 cents to $3. That is an average of $2.75 and if you say you are going to use N400 billion, that is about $1bn. If you divide $1bn by $2.75 cents each, that is about 350 million doses which is far in excess of what we need.

“World Health Organisation said if you can inject 70 percent of your population, that’s it. 70 percent of Nigeria is about 140 million so we are actually looking for 140 million doses.

“Considering that some other people are going to give us some free, we actually don’t need more than 120 million. But even if we’re buying 140 million, we just need about three hundred and eighty-something million dollars which is about N150bn to buy it.

“If they have a N400bn budget to buy the vaccine, my suggestion, they don’t need to award contracts in this vaccine, let them just call Serum institute in India and plead with them. I am sure they will even give us discount. If they want I can go for the negotiation. It won’t cost more than $2 each.”

It would be recalled that, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, Minister of Health, said in December 2020 that the federal government needs about N400 billion for COVID-19 vaccines.

According to Dr. Ehanire, N400 billion would be required to vaccinate 70 percent of Nigeria’s over 200 million population, at $8 per person.

My Sack Not On Political Reason, Says Sacked Commissioner Of Health

-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) -From Mike SOGBOLO/ North-East Bureau:

The sacked Borno State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Salisu Kwaya-Bura said he was not relieved of his appointment on political reasons.

He said that he will remain eternally grateful to the state governor, Professor Babagana Zulum for the time he gave him to serve the state as a commissioner.

He said he would be eternally grateful to the governor who picked him among thousands other qualified medical practitioners who were equally interested in the job.

Kwaya-Bura who spoke with journalists
shortly after a press statement announcing the termination of his appointment was released on Tuesday morning, said “contrary to speculations and rumour making the round that my appointment was terminated owing to political reasons, this is not true because out of thousands of people who are seeking for the appointment to head the ministry of health in Borno state, the governor at that time found me worthy to work with him.”

He said: ” I never knew that I will be appointed Commissioner but it happened and from that day I knew that one day I will leave this position like many others who had served and are no longer occupying just like me today. This is life and is about a scene, someone will come and play his part and leave. I believe this is what happened and the governor of Borno state in his own wisdom took such decision today.

He however said the decision did not come to him as a surprise because he did not appoint himself in the first place and he believes that someone else has the right to be appointed by the governor as he pleases.

He said, if there are any reasons alien to normal administrative changes, the government would have made it known since the press release informing of the relieve of his appointment comes from the government.

“I do not believe that this is political or anything to do with my role in the COVID-19 team as being speculated because I am a professional medical personnel and I will continue to play vital role in the administration of good health in Borno state.

“When things happened like this, there are a lot of rumour making the round but I am still with the government and remain professional in my chosen field like I said. I will continue to help the state and give advice where necessary and whenever I am invited to do so. I believe I have a higher calling that informed this shift. After all we have faith that it is Allah who appoints one and at the time he so wishes.”

Earlier, the Conservator General, National Park Service, Dr. Ibrahim Musa Goni said

He noted that: “The collaboration was conceived and entered into through proper consultation with relevant stakeholders such as the Bureau for Public Enterprise (BPE), the Legal Unit of Ministry of Environment before the agreement was signed.”

INFIDELITY: HOW HIGH COURT JUDGE WAS DECEIVED TO FATHER 3 CHILDREN FROM UNFAITHFUL WIFE

-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –Editor

A Judge of the High Court of Delta State, Hon. Justice Anthony Ezonfade Okorodas, PhD, has made a mind-blowing revelation about his extranged wife’s infidelity, which led to his fathering three children that were allegedly not his.

Okorodas’ revelation is hinged on a DNA test he conducted, following questions about the children’s paternity status, 11 years after Juliet Ototo quit the marriage.

Recall that Governor Ifeanyi Okowa swore in Justice Anthony Okorodas as a judge of Delta State High Court in 2018.

PRESS STATEMENT BY HON. JUSTICE ANTHONY EZONFADE OKORODAS

Ladies and gentlemen of the Press, I thank you for attending this press conference. I have taken the decision to address the Press in respect of certain traumatic developments that have arisen between me and my ex-wife, Barrister Celia Juliet Ototo of the Ototo Family of Ovom in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. It is now nearly 11 years since our separation and divorce. This Press Statement is important in order to prevent damaging speculations, half-truths and outright lies from persons who may want to cash in on the tragedy that has befallen my home.

Sometime during the coronavirus lockdowns early last year, I received information from an anonymous source that indicated that the last of the three children from my previous marriage was in fact not my biological child. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions at the time, I had to wait until August 2020 to carry out a DNA test. The DNA test result which came out in September 2020 confirmed that I was not the biological father of the child.

Consequently, I convened a joint meeting between my extended family on the one side, and Celia’s paternal and maternal families (i.e., the Ototo Family of Ovom Town and the Agbagidi Family of Yenagoa Town) on the other side, where I confronted her with the paternity fraud allegation.
Although she initially strongly insisted that I was the biological father, she has since confessed to having the child with another man during the course of our marriage.

This repulsive act of my ex-wife prompted me to conduct DNA tests in respect of the two other children. A few days ago, the results came out. Sadly, none of them is my biological child.

This abomination has caused excruciating mental trauma to me, my present wife, Barrister (Mrs) Ebi Okorodas and all of the innocent children involved. This is particularly so for Ebi, who has had to agree to have DNA tests on the four children of our own marriage. Thankfully, the test results confirm each of them to be my biological child.

It is important to state that Celia walked away from the marriage when her youngest child (who is now 17 years of age) was just 6 years old. Since then, all of her children have lived with my wife, Ebi and I, and we have been wholly responsible for their wellbeing and education.

Friends who are close to my family would readily attest to the fact that unless specifically informed, no one could tell that the children were not the biological children of my present wife.

Ebi and I would continue to support the children in any way that we can. Indeed, even after the release of the first DNA test result which proved that I was not the biological father of the last child, we have continued to pay for his education in a private boarding school. The two other children are University undergraduates. The first, a female, will be a graduate later this year, and the second will soon enter his 4th year of study. We pray for them to overcome the trauma and become responsible citizens of our country.

For Celia and her boyfriend or boyfriends, we leave them to their conscience. Thank you very much.

The Hon. Justice Anthony Ezonfade Okorodas, PhD. Judge
High Court of Delta State
January 28, 2021.

DIDA BOSS MOURNS PA OKOWA, DELTA MAJORITY LEADER

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) -By Sylvester ILOBA:

Death has been described as a notable end faced by the righteous people of God in fulfillment of God’s word in the bible which says that if we live, we live for the Lord, or if we die, we die for the Lord; therefore whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.

This was the mood expressed by the Chairman, Delta State Investments Development Agency (DIDA), Hon. HERDSMEN MENACE: ANOTHER TRIP TO GOLGOTHA?

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA)By Austen AKHAGBEME:

THE current itinerant herders crisis in the South West of Nigeria has further exposed the legendary fault lines, both real and imaginary, in our body polity.

The ethnicisation and weaponization of any and every known challenge in Nigeria, to satisfy primordial interest, is truly becoming very nauseating.

As at today, ethnic jingoists are having a field day, drumming for war. Like the thermometer, tempers are made to rise and fall like never before, as the voice of reason is gradually being overshadowed by the voice of hate and anger.

We’ve journeyed on this road before – the road to Golgotha. The same ethnic schisms, skirmishes, killings and harassment that was a fore runner to our ugly and unnecessary civil war are here again. And those who have lost this part of our history are nonchalant and ignorantly dancing to the evil beats.

Golgotha here represents our collective madness of the late sixties. It literally represents the the balding and lifeless place of crucifixion and death; a graveyard of abandoned dreams where love and humanity were separated and buried.

In a Nation where angry minds have become alembics for the purification of long seethed ethnic animosity, one finds it difficult to separate truth from vendetta, chaff from the grain and genuine ethnic concerns from its political colouration.

For example, the yoruba enfante terrible, Sunday Igboho and his position in the present crisis is well known. He has chosen to match violence with violence, as long as it assuage the bleeding minds of his kinsmen in such a way that they can now go to bed with their two eyes closed.

The yoruba activist has no consideration for due process and finesse as long as he achieves his aim. That’s the quintessential Sunday Igboho for you. On the alternative, as at today, nobody can accurately decipher the general official position of the yoruba nation vis-a-vis that of their political drivers.

While Femi Falana is angry about Igboho’s ‘unconstitutional’ method, Governor Makinde is threatening and calling for an arrest. Meanwhile, the other leaders are waiting with bathed breath, examining how the Aso Rock pendulum will swing on the matter before they take a position.

The scenario is the same in the north where some groups are threatening for a showdown while others are suspiciously silent but perturbed. The East seems to be sympathetic to the feelings of Igangan victims, but they, too , have an axe to grind with the criminal herders just like the rest of us.

Crisis management has been our bane; be it economic, religious or security crisis such as we are having in our hands now. Even though the Fulani crisis is basically a mismanaged economic crisis that snowballed into that of security, our collective knack to play politics with serious national issues is legendary.

There is no doubt that we have been invaded from without, by those who hates us but looks exactly like us. This is the reason why this crisis should create the long awaited opportunity to solve, not only the Fulani – Farmers problem, but also that of the general internal security challenges, as it regards alien administration and general immigration policies in Nigeria.

It is a window that Igboho and his likes have flagrantly but graciously thrown open, to right the ancient wrongs and move the Nation forward. Anything short of this, will be nothing but another painful trip to Golgotha. God forbid!

Gov Okowa Does Not Interfere In Running Of DESOPADEC, Says Bashorun Askia

-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA):

…Launches DESOPADEC Skills Academy

The Managing Director of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), Bashorun Askia Ogieh, says Governor Ifeanyi Okowa does not interfere with the running of the commission.

Askia said DESOPADEC, an interventionist agency for oil bearing communities in Delta, is diligently implementing its mandate to change the socio-economic development of host communities within the mandate areas of the commission.

He stated this on Wednesday at the PTI Conference Centre in Effurun, near Warri during the official launch and matriculation ceremony for 160 trainees of the DESOPADEC Skill Academy for unemployed youths from oil bearing communities.

“I wish to briefly address an unsavoury issue that crept up recently. Some people have been promoting false and mischievous narratives on the management of the income accruing to Delta State under the derivation principle.

“Let me make it clear that DESOPADEC is the product of an Act of Parliament, having been passed into law by the Delta State House of Assembly under the administration of His Excellency, Chief James Ibori.

“The provisions of the DESOPADEC Act have been diligently implemented over the years. Under His Excellency, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, our governor, there has been no interference on the running of DESOPADEC”, Askia stated.

Bashorun Askia, who described the launch of the Academy as unprecedent in the history of the commission, said the programme is designed to tackle rising unemployment and promote entrepreneurial spirit among youths in its mandate area.

He explained that Nigerian youths especially Deltans must embrace entrepreneurship rather than wait for ‘non-existence’ white-collar jobs.

According to him, “ At DESOPADEC, we have always believed that we can provide our willing, teeming youths the oyster that can drain them from the space of helplessness, strongly convinced that entrepreneurship is the antidote to unemployment. This Academy is therefore one of our major pillars designed to deliver our low hanging fruits.

“Today is the beginning of one of our major intervention measures to address a critical issue that plagues not only our youth in Delta State, but the entire country. We are blessed with a large pool of educated and energetic young men and women. However, without technical skills in an increasingly competitive world, many of our youth have been left jobless.

Bashorun Askia said, “Everyone is born with a passion and latent, buried gifts which can be harnessed. Elsewhere, I have said one’s passion, outside academic qualifications, can lead to wealth creation and comfort. The future belongs to the youths with fall back trades, those who create jobs and have become entrepreneurs and not seekers of white-collar jobs.

“The DESOPADEC Academy which we are launching today is a new platform we have created to impact requisite skills on the youth and equip them with the capacity to venture into the exciting world of entrepreneurship. Skills acquisition is the key to building an assured future for the young generation.”

Bashorun Askia said the maiden beneficiaries of the programme will be trained for six months in various skills including catering, confectionery, decorations, electrical and solar energy works, fashion design and textile design, tilling and interlocking, Welding and Fabrications and Information Technology Training Packages.

The DESOPADEC helmsman who used the opportunity to disabuse the minds of wagging tongues about the DESOPADEC Skills Academy, said “We are not building any form of physical structures to house the Academy.

“Instead, we are innovatively using established Trade and Technical Centres across the State, all of which boast of some the best resource persons in Nigeria. These are ongoing commercial workshops where learning is more practical,” he said.

Meanwhile, Governor Okowa, represented by his deputy, Deacon Kingsley Otuaro, appealed to youths to acquire skills that will make them entrepreneurs and as a result, free the Nigerian society of crime and strife.

The governor commended the commission for the initiative, stressing that the programme is in line with the human capital development of the Governor Okowa’s administration.

“We knew that if we don’t take our wards, our children off the street, making them meaningful in the society, so that they can put food on their table and on the table of their loved ones, then we have only succeeded in creating a society that is laden with criminality and unrest.

“When we did all that we did at the state level, we instructed the ministries, departments and agencies to identify with what we are doing. And of course, DESOPADEC is just doing what they are supposed to do, following that trajectory of the state government.

“The success of this programme, you being the pioneer students, will encourage DESOPADEC to carry on this skill acquisition training for your brothers and sisters who are not part of this training now. I want to encourage all the matriculants that the Delta State Government is expecting so much from you”.

Negative COVID-19 Test Required For Travel To United States

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –By Mike SOGBOLO:

Anyone traveling to United States have to produce a proof of testing negative to COVID-19 from henceforth.

The new rule affects both citizens and immigrants wishing to travel into the country, according to a release

A release on Thursday by the Office of the Spokesperson, U.S. Department of State read “The U.S. Department of State and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) remind all travelers that beginning from January 26, all air passengers two years of age or older arriving to the United States must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test or proof of recovery from COVID-19 before boarding.

“This order applies to both foreign nationals and U.S. citizens. For more information about the testing requirement, visit: Requirement for Proof of Negative COVID-19 Test or Recovery from COVID-19 for All Air Passengers Arriving in the United States | CDC “

It added that: “U.S. citizens should reconsider non-essential travel abroad. Those that must travel abroad following the implementation of this order should carefully consider the following:

“You could have difficulty accessing a test. Testing availability and turnaround times vary widely around the world. Check the U.S. Embassy website for your planned destination(s) for information about testing options. What plan do you have to ensure you can get a test that meets the requirement in order to come home on time?

“You could test positive and have to stay abroad. Many individuals infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 are asymptomatic and unaware they carry the virus. If you test positive, you will not be able to return home as planned. What plan do you have in case you cannot come home for several weeks? Where will you stay? How will you finance your stay?
You could have difficulty accessing or financing medical care. Travelers should be aware that the availability and quality of healthcare varies around the world, and that private health insurance may not cover expenses incurred abroad. Will your health insurance cover your hospitalization or other medical expenses abroad? Do you have travel insurance that covers medical evacuation to the United States, and does it include COVID-19 as a covered item?”

The release added that: “The Department and the CDC continue to strongly recommend U.S. citizens reconsider travel abroad, and postpone all non-essential travel.

“If you must travel overseas, you should review the entire State Department Travel Advisory for your destination(s) on travel.state.gov and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (http://STEP.state.gov) to receive important updates from the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. You should obtain travel insurance that will cover medical evacuation, including for COVID-19, to the United States,

“in the event you become seriously ill. We also urge those contemplating travel abroad to review CDC’s country-specific travel recommendations and their overall guidance during the COVID-19 pandemic, available at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/index.html . U.S. citizens abroad should also closely monitor guidance from local public health and immigration authorities at their location.”

National Security: Buratai Bows Out, As Buhari Appoints New Service Chiefs

-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA):

After a long call for the replacement of Nigeria’s service chiefs which many Nigerians say have overstayed their usefulness, following heightened national insecurity, President Muhammadu Buhari has at last, heeded to voice of wisdom by appointing new service chiefs to oversee the already porous security situations in the country.

The replaced service chiefs were appointed by Buhari in 2015 after he was elected to his first presidential term in office.

In the statement made available to Blank NEWS Online, the Presidential media aide, Femi Adesina said Buhari has accepted the immediate resignation of the Service Chiefs, and their retirement from service.

“PMB appoints new Service Chiefs. Maj Gen LEO Irabor, CDS, Maj Gen I Attahiru, Army, Rear Adm AZ Gambo, Navy, AVM IO Alao, Air Force. He congratulates outgoing Service Chiefs on efforts to bring enduring peace to the country,” Adesina tweeted.

“Irabor replaces Defense Chief Abayomi Olonisakin, while Army Chief Tukur Buratai is succeeded by Attahiru.

“Gambo would now head the Navy, replacing Navy Chief Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas while Alao takes over from Air Chief Sadique Abubakar.”

SUNDAY IGBOHO AND THE TRIUMPH OF ERROR

-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –By Austen AKHAGBEME:

The man, Sunday Igboho before now, may not be popular outside his ancestral territory. But he’s such a daring rebel, loved by his people especially the youth of Ibarapa, in Oyo state of Nigeria.

The impunity of the criminal variant of the controversial Fulani herdsmen, criss-crossing the lenght and breath of our bushes and forest reserves, has brought Sunday Adeyemo, alias Sunday Igboho to national limelight for the right or wrong reason, depending on your prism.

In an environment where the rule becomes the exemption, anything goes and the multiplicity of impunity reigns supreme. I have said repeatedly here and in other fora that every society gets the heroes it deserves. When we choose to treat symptoms instead of the disease, what you get is vexation and frustration. This is the very reason we have to trend with caution in handling the already bad case of Sunday Igboho versus the Fulani herdsmen.

Those who are beating the drums of war should sheath their swords and blow the trumpet of truce and dialogue. In the same vein, those advocating for Peace should shout louder, the importance of Justice. Peaceful coexistence is predicated on natural Justice, fairness and communal understanding.

The crisis never started from Sunday Igboho. His likes were born out of an age long habit of playing the ostrich with a matter as serious as life and death. To pounce on him, therefore, is to treat the symptom of a deadly disease while ignoring the root cause.

Igboho’s emergence and adventure was made possible as a result of a yawning void created by the failure of leadership and the resultant consequence of a dangerous exposure to a reign of terror and mayhem perpetrated on our roads, bushes and forests by a rogue variant of the Fulani herdsmen.

Let the government of the day address this problem of the Fulani herdsmen for once and come up with a fair judgement that will pacify both the perpetrators and their victims. Let animal husbandry progress or mutate to a more scientific best practice instead of the present dangerous, atavistic and nomadic method with its accompanying crisis.

Or else, we will keep triumphing in error and will one day, raise a generation that will brazenly question the status quo and may flagrantly interrogate injustice unjustly; just as the likes of the Akoni Oodua of Yoruba land, Sunday Igboho, has done.

“It was an unfortunate fire incident involving a gas station where the tanker was trying to discharge gas.

“We have visited the place and the victims and we have seen the extent of damage caused by the inferno.

“We lost four persons, three children and a woman.

“After my visit to the two families that lost their dear ones, I also visited the Central Hospital at Agbor where they were initially rushed to with varying degrees of burn ranging from 80 to 90 per cent.

“They were immediately offered medical services even though they wouldn’t have been able to attend to them because of the extent of the burns so they have to transfer them to the Federal Medical Centre Asaba and the University of Benin Teaching Hospital with the aid of ambulances provided by the state government.

“I have directed the Commissioner for Health to make some deposits at the hospitals to enable them have full treatment,” he said.

“I have listened and heard the complaints. Haven listened to the Medical Director and the extent to which they went, obviously the patients had severe and extensive burns.

“Any burn that is above 30 per cent is a major burn and we are talking about 80 to 90 per cent burns here.

“So they needed to be moved to UBTH, a specialised centre for the treatment of burns. When you have such a degree of burns many hospitals will not accept them because the survival rate is low.”

Man Jailed In Maiduguri For N9 million Fraud

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –From Mike SOGBOLO:

A man has been sentenced to a year and nine months imprisonment by a Federal High Court sitting in Maiduguri for obtaining by false pretense N9 million.

The man, Abubakar Ahiwa was sentenced by Justice Jude Dagat of the Federal High Court, Maiduguri after he was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The defendant, who was convicted along with his company, Dokkal International Travelling & Tourism Limited, was first arraigned before Justice Muhammad Salihu, who is now retired, in 2017.

He had pleaded “not guilty” to the charges preferred against him.

After the arraignment, the convict was latter to have absconded, forcing the court to issue a bench warrant for his arrest.

After he was arrested by operatives of the EFCC, the case commenced de novo on February 13, 2020 before Justice Dagat.

The petitioner, Fatima Alfa had alleged that Ahiwa tricked him to part with N9 million with a fake offer of a two bedroom flat situated behind Asokoro General Hospital, Abuja.

At Thursday’s proceedings, the prosecution counsel, Haruna Abdulkadir informed the court that the convict had entered into a “plea bargain agreement” with the Commission and paid the total sum of money obtained by him to the nominal complainant.

Consequently, Haruna urged the court to “order the defendant re-take his plea to an amended charge”.

The charge reads: “That you, Sahabo Abubakar Ahiwa between November 2014 and January 2015 at Maiduguri, Borno State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court and with intent to defraud, induced one Dr. Fatima Alfa Tahir to deliver to you the sum of N9,000,000 (Nine Million Naira) only under the false pretence that the said sum would be utilized to service her interest for payment of purchase price of a 2-bedroom flat situated at Asokoro, Abuja, facts you knew to be false and you thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under sections 1(1)(b) and 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 respectively”.

He pleaded “guilty” to the charge and was convicted and sentenced to the time he spent ( twenty one months) in the custody of the EFCC and the Nigerian Correctional Service.

In the words of Justice Dagat: “pursuant to the plea bargain agreement filed on the 12th January 2021, the convict is hereby sentenced to the already term served in detention. The convict, haven restituted the nominal complainant in full, there shall be no further order for restitution”.

Isoko Youths Fume, Make 7 Strong Demands From Federal, Delta Govts

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA):

  • Government Intervention On The Issue of Insecurity
  • Conversion Of Ozoro Polytechnic To A Federal Polytechnic
  • Inclusion Of Isoko Youths In The Non-Violent Phase Of The Amnesty Programme
  • Call For The Sack Of NDDC Sole Administrator…
  • Threatens To Shutdown Oil And Gas Facilities in Isokoland

OZORO: The youths of the Isoko Ethnic Nationality under the auspices of the Isoko National Youth Assembly (INYA) Worldwide have again risen to the occasion by making strong demands from and calling on both the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Delta State Government to urgently intervene on pressing issues in Isokoland without further delay.

The President of INYA, Comrade Amos Ogbokor-Etaluku, who read out the demands at a World Press Briefing held at the Secretariat of the Assembly in Ozoro on Friday, January 15, 2021 said should governments pay deaf ears by refusing to protect lives and properties and fulfilling their demands they would completely shut down all oil and gas facilities in Isokoland.

Part of the text of the speech read:

A CLARION CALL ON THE FEDERAL AND STATE GOVERMENT’S TO INTERVENE IN PRESSING ISSUES IN ISOKO LAND BY THE ISOKO NATIONAL YOUTH ASSEMBLY (INYA)

As the apex youth body in Isoko nation, we hereby call on both the state and federal Governments to as a matter of urgency intervene in pressing issues confronting our people bordering on security, policy, socio-economic and environmental justice.

Decisive Intervention of Government in the issue of Insecurity in Isoko

It is no news that parts of Isoko nation are engulfed in intercommunal bloodletting and wanton destruction of properties which have disrupted the peaceful coexistence and movement of persons in Isoko land. What is most disheartening is the government’s apathy and aloofness towards these crises. This is totally unacceptable. We are calling on government’s immediate intervention by sending military presence to the concerned communities and to put conflict resolution mechanism in place for the people to have conciliatory meetings towards amicably resolutions of the various needless fracases.

We all are aware of miltary presence around oil facilities in Isoko land. The government cannot continually keep military men in watch over oil facilities for their economic gains and yet but do nothing about the lives and valuable properties of our people.

Should Government continue to refuse to protect the lives and properties of the Isoko people which is her primary objective and responsibility, we will have no choice than to shut down all oil facilities in Isoko land.

Sack of the Sole Administrator and Constitution of a Substantive Board

The criticality of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to the development of the Niger Delta cannot be overemphasized. Federal Government’s refusal to constitute a substantive board for agenda setting and development of the region, is politics taken too far. The continous appointment of Interim Committees and now Sole Administrator for the Commission is illegal and regrettably contravenes the Law seeting up the Commission.

We therefore call for the immediate sack of the Sole Administrator of the NDDC. We demand that a substantive board and management team be inaugurated for the Commission inline with Laws of the Commission.

Conversion of Ozoro Polytechnic to a Federal Polytechnic

Over the years, federal presence has not been felt in the Isoko nation despite the fact that we are a major oil producing nation. One of the ways the government can remediate the wrongs that have been done to our people is to convert the state Polytechnic in Ozoro to a federal one. The time has come for us to take our destiny in our hands if the government does not take steps for us to make our people feel its presence. We are however, starting with this call.

We demand the establishment of a Federal Medical Center to cater for the health of Isoko people that has been gruesomely injuried by over six decades of consistent oil exploration, gas flaring and pollution.

Inclusion of Isoko Youths in the Non-Violent Phase of the Amnesty Program

The Amnesty Program initiated by President Musa Yar’dua in 2009, over ten years ago, has resulted in the massive empowerment of countless number of youths of other nations in the Niger Delta except Isoko youths. We see this as grossly discriminatory. As the amnesty program reaches what has been called the “non-violent stage”, we cannot fold our hands any longer and watch other nations benefit and not have our people included in the program. We are by this statement giving an eviction notice to all oil companies in Isoko land if our youths are not included in the program. The federal government should please take note.

Appointment of Qualified Isoko sons and daughters by the Federal Government:

We note with extreme sadness that not one Isoko son or daughter has been appointed into the President Muhammadu Buhari led Federal Government despite our huge contribution to the economy of the nation and the avalanche of qualified Isoko sons and daughters in the various fields of knowledge. This is inspite of the promise by the President to correct this monumental discrimination when the Isoko people visited the Villa in 2018

We hereby call on the President to live true to his promise now and now as time is of essence.

Stabilization of Electricity in Isoko Land by Oil Companies:

One area our people have suffered is electrification. As part of their corporate social responsibility to us as their hosts, we are tasking the oil companies to collaborate and deploy technologies towards lighting Isoko nation by building Gas Turbines from the gas deposit in Isoko land instead of flaring same and polluting the environment. We will not tolerate any form of environmental degradation as a result of gas flaring anymore when the gas can be converted to electricity for our people.

Speedy Completion of All Projects in DELSU, Oleh Campus:
The snail pace in which infrastructure in Delta State University, Oleh Campus is moving is worrisome. This is indicative of the lack of empathy and commitment of the government to the Isoko course. We will not hesitate to seal off entry points to Isoko nation if the situation persists.

As youths, we are ready to work with the government to accelerate development in our land. On the other hand, we will not tolerate the lingering injustice to our people any further.

Thank you!

AKEREDOLU: THE FORESTS AND THEIR OWNERS

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –By Austen AKHAGBEME:

Like the mosquito that perches on the scrotum, the menace of the criminal elements within the Fulani herdsmen parading in our bushes and forest must be handled with utmost care, albeit decisively.

The recent call by Governor Akeredolu of Ondo state for the criminal herders to vacate the hallowed forest within the state, must first of all be viewed from a pure and immediate security angle rather than that of ethnicism and constitutionalism.

His cry should be taken, analyse and understood like that of a frustrated father whose family is under threat of annihilation by strangers who once dined and wine with them. It must be seen as the cry of a Patriot who loves his people and truly wants to protect them.

Until and unless we go about it this way, we will only be playing politics with serious issues of life and death; yet politicization of serious matters of state as it relates to the right to life and human dignity is gradually becoming our favourite pass time in our Nation.

Governor Akeredolu is obviously miffed by the constant harassment, kidnapping and other associated vices being perpetrated by these criminal elements (against a people who voted him into power to protect them) right under his very nose. Anybody in his shoes, may do exactly what he did given the fact that all fingers are pointing to one direction as regards the perpetrators of this crime.

It is against this backdrop that one would expect any reasonable voice of dissent to draw its caution from and not to play the Ostrich by sounding politically correct without proffering a solution to this raging storm.

The overwhelming and often repeated argument has always been that of the fact that strangers and bad elements have appeared from the moon to infiltrate and pollute the old innocent Nigerian herders who have lived peacefully with their host communities from time immemorial.

That nothing has been done practically and decisively to fish out the bad elements from the good ones by the umbrella body of these nomadic breed, is still a mystery cast in iron.

Those who jumped on Akeredolu, based on constitutionality may be right but to do that without suggesting a commensurate long and lasting solution to the menace could, therefore, be morally wrong.

Akeredolu owns the land and the forests. But from the various voices that shouted him down based on legality, citizenship rights, fear of reprisals etc, the herders have become the new and ‘rightful’ landlords.

Governor Akeredolu is a renowned legal luminary. He must have been boxed into a corner with his own boxing gloves. But it is better to take a wrong step and be noticed and corrected than to be cowardly cowed by the fear of the fearless merchants of evil in our forests. We shall get it right one day.

U.S. PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN’S INAUGURAL SPEECH ON JAN 20, 2021 AT CAPITOL HILL

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA):

Chief Justice Roberts, Vice President Harris, Speaker Pelosi, Leader Schumer, Leader McConnell, Vice President Pence, and my distinguished guests, my fellow Americans, this is America’s day. This is democracy’s day, a day of history and hope, of renewal and resolve. Through a crucible for the ages, America has been tested anew.

And America has risen to the challenge. Today we celebrate the triumph, not of a candidate, but of a cause, the cause of democracy. The people, the will of the people, has been heard, and the will of the people has been heeded.

We’ve learned again that democracy is precious. Democracy is fragile. And at this hour, my friends, democracy has prevailed.

So now, on this hallowed ground, where just a few days ago violence sought to shake the Capitol’s very foundation, we come together as one nation under God, indivisible, to carry out the peaceful transfer of power as we have for more than two centuries. As we look ahead in our uniquely American way, restless, bold, optimistic, and set our sights on the nation we know we can be and we must be.

I thank my predecessors of both parties for their presence here today. I thank them from the bottom of my heart. And I know — and I know the resilience of our constitution and the strength, the strength of our nation, as does President Carter who I spoke with last night, who cannot be with us today, but whom we salute for his lifetime in service.

I’ve just taken the sacred oath each of those patriots have taken. The oath first sworn by George Washington. But the American story depends not on any one of us, not on some of us, but on all of us, on we the people, who seek a more perfect union. This is a great nation. We are good people. And over the centuries, through storm and strife, in peace and in war, we’ve come so far, but we still have far to go.

We’ll press forward with speed and urgency, for we have much to do in this winter of peril and significant possibilities. Much to repair, much to restore, much to heal, much to build, and much to gain. Few people in our nation’s history have been more challenged or found a time more challenging or difficult than the time we’re in now.

Once in a century virus that silently stalks the country. It’s taken as many lives in one year as America lost in all of World War II. Millions of jobs have been lost, hundreds of thousands of businesses closed, a cry for racial justice some 400 years in the making moves us. The dream of justice for all will be deferred no longer.

A cry for survival comes from planet itself. A cry that can’t be any more desperate or any more clear, and now a rise of political extremism, white supremacy, domestic terrorism that we must confront and we will defeat.

To overcome these challenges, to restore the soul and secure the future of America, requires so much more than words. It requires the most elusive of all things in a democracy, unity. Unity. In another January, on New Year’s Day in 1863, Abraham Lincoln signed the emancipation proclamation. When he put pen to paper, the president said, and I quote, “if my name ever goes down into history, it’ll be for this act, and my whole soul is in it.”

Today, on this January day, my whole soul is in this: bringing America together, uniting our people, uniting our nation. And I ask every American to join me in this cause.

Uniting to fight the foes we face, anger, resentment and hatred, extremism, lawlessness, violence, disease, joblessness and hopelessness. With unity, we can do great things, important things.

We can right wrongs. We can put people to work in good jobs. We can teach our children in safe schools. We can overcome the deadly virus. We can reward — reward work and rebuild the middle class and make health care secure for all. We can deliver racial justice and we can make America once again the leading force for good in the world.

I know speaking of unity can sound to some like a foolish fantasy these days. I know that the forces that divide us are deep and they are real. But I also know they are not new. Our history has been a constant struggle between the American ideal that we all are created equal, and the harsh ugly reality that racism, nativism, fear, demonization have long torn us apart.

The battle is perennial, and victory is never assured. Through civil war, the great depression, World War, 9/11, through struggle, sacrifices, and setbacks, our better angels have always prevailed. In each of these moments, enough of us — enough of us — have come together to carry all of us forward, and we can do that now.

History, faith, and reason show the way, the way of unity. We can see each other, not as adversaries, but as neighbors. We can treat each other with dignity and respect. We can join forces, stop the shouting, and lower the temperature. For without unity, there is no peace, only bitterness and fury.

No progress, only exhausting outrage. No nation, only a state of chaos. This is our historic moment of crisis and challenge, and unity is the path forward. And we must meet this moment as the United States of America. If we do that, I guarantee you, we will not fail. We have never, ever, ever, ever failed in America when we’ve acted together.

And so today, at this time, in this place, let’s start afresh, all of us. Let’s begin to listen to one another again.

Hear one another. See one another. Show respect to one another. Politics doesn’t have to be a raging fire, destroying everything in its path. Every disagreement doesn’t have to be a cause for total war. And we must reject the culture in which facts themselves are manipulated, and even manufactured.

My fellow Americans, we have to be different than this. America has to be better than this, and I believe America is so much better than this. Just look around. Here we stand, in the shadow of the Capitol dome, as it was mentioned earlier, completed amid the civil war, when the union itself was literally hanging in the balance. Yet, we endured. We prevailed.

Here we stand, looking out on the great mall where Dr. King spoke of his dream. Here we stand where, 108 years ago at another inaugural, thousands of protesters tried to block brave women marching for the right to vote. And today, we mark the swearing of the first woman in American history elected to national office, Vice President Kamala Harris.

Don’t tell me things can’t change!

Here we stand, across the Potomac, from Arlington Cemetery, where heroes who gave the last full measure of devotion, rest in eternal peace. And here we stand, just days after a riotous mob thought they could use violence to silence the will of the people, to stop the work of our democracy, to drive us from this sacred ground. It did not happen. It will never happen. Not today. Not tomorrow. Not ever.

Not ever. To all those who supported our campaign, I’m humbled by the faith you’ve placed in us. To all of those who did not support us, let me say this. Hear me out as we move forward. Take a measure of me and my heart.

If you still disagree, so be it. That’s democracy. That’s America. The right to dissent peaceably. Within the guardrails of our republic it’s perhaps this nation’s greatest strength. Yet hear me clearly, disagreement must not lead to disunion. And I pledge this to you, I will be a president for all Americans, all Americans.

And I promise you, I will fight as hard for those who did not support me as for those who did. Many centuries ago, St. Augustine, a saint in my church, wrote that a people was a multitude defined by the common objects of their love. Defined by the common objects of their love. What are the common objects we as Americans love, that define us as Americans?

I think we know. Opportunity, security, liberty, dignity, respect, honor and, yes, the truth. The recent weeks and months have taught us a painful lesson. There is truth and there are lies, lies told for power and for profit.

And each of us has a duty and a responsibility as citizens, as Americans, and especially as leaders, leaders who have pledged to honor our Constitution and protect our nation, to defend the truth and defeat the lies.

Look — I understand that many of my fellow Americans view the future with fear and trepidation. I understand they worry about their jobs. I understand like my dad, they lay in bed wondering, can I keep my health care, can I pay my mortgage. Thinking about their families, about what comes next. I promise you, I get it.

But the answer is not to turn inward, to retreat into competing factions, distrusting those who don’t look like — look like you or worship the way you do or don’t get their news from the same source as you do. We must end this uncivil war that pits red against blue, rural versus — rural versus urban, conservative versus liberal. We can do this if we open our souls instead of hardening our hearts.

If we show a little tolerance and humility, and if we are willing to stand in the other person’s shoes — as my mom would say — just for a moment, stand in their shoes. Because here’s the thing about life: there’s no accounting for what fate will deal you.

Some days, when you need a hand. There are other days when we’re called to lend a hand. That’s how it has to be. That’s what we do for one another.

And if we are this way, our country will be stronger, more prosperous, more ready for the future. And we can still disagree. My fellow Americans, in the work ahead of us, we’re going to need each other. We need all our strength to preserve — to persevere through this dark winter. We’re entering what may be the toughest and deadliest period of the virus.

We must set aside politics and finally face this pandemic as one nation, one nation. And I promise you this. As the Bible says, “Weep, ye may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.” We will get through this together. Together. Look, folks, all my colleagues that I served with in the house and the senate up here, we all understand, the world is watching, watching all of us today. So here’s my message to those beyond our borders.

America has been tested, and we’ve come out stronger for it. We will repair our alliances and engage with the world once again. Not to meet yesterday’s challenges, but today’s and tomorrow’s challenges.

And we’ll lead not merely by the example of our power, but by the power of our example. We’ll be a strong and trusted partner for peace, progress, and security.

Look, you all know, we’ve been through so much in this nation. In my first act as president, I’d like to ask you to join me in a moment of silent prayer to remember all those who we lost in this past year to the pandemic, those 400,000 fellow Americans — moms, dads, husbands, wives, sons, daughters, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. We’ll honor them by becoming the people and the nation we know we can and should be.

So, I ask you, let’s say a silent prayer for those who have lost their lives and those left behind and for our country.

Amen. Folks, this is a time of testing. We face an attack on our democracy and on truth. A raging virus, growing inequity, the sting of systemic racism, a climate in crisis. America’s role in the world. Any one of these would be enough to challenge us in profound ways. But the fact is, we face them all at once. Presenting this nation with one of the gravest responsibilities we’ve had. Now we’re going to be tested.

Are we going to step up, all of us? It’s time for boldness, for there is so much to do. And this is certain. I promise you, we will be judged, you and I, by how we resolve these cascading crises of our era. We will rise to the occasion, is the question. Will we master this rare and difficult hour?

Will we meet our obligations, and pass along a new and better world to our children? I believe we must. I’m sure you do as well. I believe we will. And when we do, we’ll write the next great chapter in the history of the United States of America, the American story, a story that might sound something like a song that means a lot to me. It’s called “American Anthem.” And there’s one verse that stands out, at least for me.

And it goes like this: “The work and prayers of century have brought us to this day. What shall be our legacy? What will our children say? Let me know in my heart when my days are through. America, America, I gave my best to you.” Let’s add our own work and prayers to the unfolding story of our great nation.

If we do this, then when our days are through, our children and our children’s children will say of us, they gave their best, they did their duty, they healed a broken land. My fellow Americans, I close the day where I began, with a sacred oath before God and all of you. I give you my word, I will always level with you. I will defend the Constitution. I’ll defend our democracy. I’ll defend America.

And I’ll give all, all of you, keep everything you — I do in your service, thinking not of power but of possibilities, not of personal injuries but the public good. And together we shall write an American story of hope, not fear. Of unity, not division. Of light, not darkness. A story of decency and dignity, love and healing, greatness and goodness.

May this be the story that guides us, the story that inspires us, and the story that tells ages yet to come that we answered the call of history, we met the moment. Democracy and hope, truth and justice, did not die on our watch, but thrived, that America secured liberty at home and stood once again as a beacon to the world. That is what we owe our forebears, one another, and generations to follow.

So, with purpose and resolve, we turn to those tasked of our time, sustained by faith, driven by conviction, and devoted to one another and the country we love with all our hearts. May God bless America and may God protect our troops. Thank you, America.
