13% Derivation: Okowa Not Against Communities’ Agitation – Spokesman

0

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA):

Mr Olisa Ifeajika, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta, says the Governor is not in any way against the clamour by oil-bearing communities to be given funds directly from the 13 per cent Derivation Fund.

He said that contrary to the reasoning and issues being canvassed by some groups and the slant adopted by a section of the media on the issue, Okowa wished that the agitation should be holistic and collective, and targeted at getting the Federal Government to give oil-producing states more percentage of funds from the remaining 87 per cent still being kept and shared across the country.

Ifeajika made this known in a statement in Asaba on Sunday.

According to him, the Governor only advised that if people and communities must agitate for the control of the 13 per cent derivation, they should also clamour for the entire 100 per cent from the Federal Government as 13 per cent is a meagre sum compared to the 87 per cent still being held and shared among all the states and the Federal Government..

The spokesman explained that the law establishing Delta State Oil-Producing Area Development Commission (DESOPADEC), which empowered it to manage part of the 13 per cent derivation funds, was enacted long before Okowa became governor.

He said that previous administrations in the state administered the derivation funds in line with the law, which the present administration had not deviated from.

“The law establishing DESOPADEC indicates that 50 per cent of the 13 per cent derivation fund shall be used by the commission for the purpose of development projects and programmes in oil-producing communities.

“Governor Okowa in his characteristic forthrightness, which has ingratiated him to all Deltans, has continued to attend to issues concerning DESOPADEC according to the law.

“He is not opposed to communities agitating for the control of derivation funds; and for peace and progress of the state, the governor remains committed to ensuring that projects and other life-lifting infrastructure are evenly distributed in oil-producing communities.

“Since the present administration assumed office in 2015, the governor has carried out reforms to re-focus DESOPADEC, as an interventionist agency, to deliver life-changing infrastructure in the communities.

“As a matter of fact, the Okowa administration has treaded where others had dreaded, especially with the construction of over 20-kilometre roads criss-crossing the creeks, from Obotobo I, Obotobo II, Sokebulou, Yokiri in Ogulagha, Burutu Local Government Area to ongoing construction of Trans-Warri road, with 19 bridges.

“These audacious projects by Okowa in the coastal communities also include the Okerenkoko road in Gbaramatu, Warri South-West; Burutu township concrete road, with pavements, construction of new town in Oboghoro community in Warri North, the completed Ovwor-Effurun-Otor Bridge and ongoing construction of Ayakoromo Bridge,” he said.

Ifeajika reaffirmed that the governor was profoundly concerned about peace in the Niger Delta, especially in the South-South, and had been working in synergy with his colleagues in the region to ensure that peace continued to prevail in all the states.

He added that Okowa and other governors in the South-South and National Assembly members from the zone had been collaborating to ensure that clauses for adequate funds to be made available to communities hosting oil facilities and their activities were enshrined in the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB).

He noted that Okowa’s administration had continued to ensure equity and fairness in projects and appointments, contrary to the claims by the agitators, adding that the government would remain on that lane, which had been acknowledged as progressive and prosperous for the state.

“The present administration will not be distracted in any way,’’ Ifeajika said and called on all Deltans to support the government by all hands being on deck to ensure the attainment of a stronger Delta.

Okowa’s All-Inclusive Leadership Style Hailed *As Govt Establishes Persons With Disabilities In Vocational Skills

-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA): By Albert OGRAKA:

The Delta State Chief Job and Wealth Creation Officer, Prof Eric Eboh, has hailed Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, the Governor of the State for his all-inclusive leadership style of ensuring that persons with disabilities (PwDs) are always enrolled in the state government’s Skills Training and Entrepreneurship Programme (STEP).

Prof. Eboh stated this on Friday, November 20, 2020 while giving out starter packs to the PwDs in Asaba, the state capital.

The PwDs, 16 in number, are part of the 25 PwDs who benefitted from the STEP programme in the 2019/2020 Cycle and have undergone vocational training in Catering and Confectionery; Hairdressing, Makeover and Braiding; Shoemaking; PoP, and ICT. Their counterparts in Fashion and Textile Design; Tiling and Interlocking, and Welding and Fabrication whose trainings are for eight months would receive theirs at a later date.

Congratulating them for the successful completion of their training, the Chief Job and Wealth Creation Officer, Prof Eric Eboh, charged them to put their starter packs into good use.

He said their enrolment into the job creation programme is a clear testimony of the all-inclusive leadership style of Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, the Governor of the State. He added that PwDs have always been included in the programme since the 2016/2017 Cycle.

Prof Eboh represented by the STEP Coordinator, Mr Onyeisi Nkenchor, admonished them to keep hope alive and not to look down on themselves as a result of their physical challenge, stressing that there is ability in disability.

“Being trained for three or six months is an indication that you possess the ability to achieve your goals. I urge you therefore to use your ability to excel in your chosen businesses. Very soon, you will become employers of labour, CEOs and there is nothing that will stop you. As you receive your starter packs, we expect that in few months, we will start hearing good news about you,” he remarked.

Representing the Hon Commissioner for Women Affairs, Community and Social Development, Mrs Flora Alatan, the Director of Rehabilitation in the ministry, Mr Peter Okocha, explained that the welfare of PwDs fall under the purview of her ministry.

He said the Women Affairs Ministry work in collaboration with the Delta State Job Creation Bureau to nominate PwDs to be included in the job creation programme.
She alluded this to the prosperity agenda of the Governor who has rolled out programmes to reduce poverty in the state.

According to her, “Governor Okowa runs an inclusive government. We are in partnership with the job creation bureau. We have different categories of beneficiaries such as the visually impaired, the hearing impaired, the physically challenged among others. They are all part of the indigent. The whole idea is to reduce poverty.”

She tasked them to judiciously use their starter packs to improve their lives and to contribute to the development of the State, advising them to report whatever challenge they encounter in the course of establishing their businesses to the office promptly.
She emphasized that the State Government is interested in the welfare of PwDs.

Continuing, “That you are this way does not mean that you are not useful. Do not sell your starter packs. Start up immediately. Past beneficiaries are being monitored, showing that government has your interest at heart.”

Mercy Okoh (Warri South) in ICT lauded the State Government for coming to her aid at her time of hopelessness. “I have a first degree and a Masters’ degree in Information and Library Science since 2013, but no job. Senator Ifeanyi Okowa gave me the opportunity to become relevant.”

Also, Ochuko Okpobrisi Kelly (Ughelli North) in ICT expressed satisfaction with the nomination and training. Being unemployed as a university graduate since 2010, he pledged to use his starter pack and the knowledge acquired to start up a business and to build it to enviable heights.

No helicopter crashed in Borno State today. A UN helicopter indeed undertook a mission to Banki & has since returned to Maiduguri.

“One would have expected that, in line with the ethics of journalism, @daily_trust would have made more deliberate effort to verify the story by contacting relevant authorities before going to press, rather than propagating fake news.

Meanwhile the Nigerian Air Force just confirmed that United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) helicopter had issues shortly after take-off from Banki to Maiduguri and had to make emergency landing. Banki military arrived the scene to provide security coverage while the team conducted emergency repair and the helicopter eventually flew back to Maiduguri Around 11am on 17 Nov 2020.”

The President General of Isoko Development Union, High Chief Iduh Amadhe, has called on the people of Oleh and Ozoro to remain calm as the Union will not take sides, neither biased in communities’ crisis, saying the union has been for peace and will always tow the part of peace, as the umbrella body of Isoko ethnic nationality.

ABDUKADIR BALARABE MUSA: FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD

0

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –By Austen AKHAGBEME:

Unlike Bathsheba, the lead character in Thomas Hardy’s epic novel titled: “Far from the madding Crowd” who later got married to his heartthrob, Gabriel Oak, the late Balarabe Musa could not realise his dream for Nigeria.

He was truly, squarely and dispassionately far from the madding and maddeningly reckless crowd of Nigeria politicians. This was the root cause of his infamous impeachment by the opposition dominated house of assembly, as the then governor of the old Kaduna state.

So much has been said and written about him since his demise yesterday. His spartan lifestyle, his politics, his activism and nonconformity with the mundane and the unpatriotic, et cetera. And this is good and a comfortable legacy to reflect upon, especially in these days of primordial politicking and voodoo partisanship.

He was of the political lineage of the great Mallam Aminu Kano with an equally robust but spartan comradeship of the likes of Abubakar Rimi, Bala Usman, Waziri Ibrahim( in principle) all of blessed memories and a host of others.

While the north was being swept by daring and unrepentant conservatism in the second Republic, Balarabe Musa, under the leadership of Aminu Kano, held tenaciously to the extreme leftist position to deliver governance to the people. His blueprint for infrastructural development of his state and his welfarism mantra, brought government closer to the people.

But this was to be shortlived by the infamous impeachment orchestrated by the NPN hawks, who were hell bent on taking over the all important Kaduna state.

Balarabe Musa never recovered from it, reason being that the position of an executive governor provides the closest, direct and more effective way and opportunity to touch the life of the downtrodden than the utopic intellectual militancy and advocacy outside the shores of political power, as it were.

Nevertheless, he never stopped fighting and firing from all available fronts. He was a perfect political ideologue, never jumped from one party to another. His energy was fixated on delivering the poor from the dung hills while shouting hoarse at the new northern politically predatory elites of today.

Despite his gargantuan presence in the north, he was among the first to threw support behind the Late MKO Abiola and his stolen mandate, not minding whose ox is gored. Mallam Aminu Kano is gone, so is Abubakar Rimi and Bala Usman. And today, Balarabe Musa is no more. Who will replace that loud, vocal and ” intimidating” voice of reason from the north?

This writer is truly concerned. In a day when northern elders will converge to chase crickets in a forest full of elephants and bulls, who will speak from the north so dispassionately in such a way it will resonate in the south so comfortably?

May we find another voice so soon from the north; clearer, louder and more believable than the present voice of Comrade Shehu Sani.

NIGERIA AFTER THE PROTEST: A CHALLENGE OF DEMOCRATISATION

0

-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –By Austen AKHAGBEME:

In any procedural Democracy, the right to free speech, freedom of association and the demand for citizenship inclusion in governance, is the vent from which civil liberties breathes.

Therefore, public protests becomes an active and expressive aspect of majoritarian rule in any process of democratisation, as it were.

Except and unless there’s a looming Democratic backsliding, no democratic governance worth its salts frowns at public expression of approval or disapproval as it relates to government policies and the people’s welfare.

But this singular gesture, by the teeming Nigerian youths has become the bane in today’s post- protest Nigeria. The government seems to be very angry with the youth protest such that some identified leaders of the protest are daily being picked up in a gestapo manner by the government, to answer to their “misdeeds” of yesterday.

And the fact that negotiations and judicial inquiries to find a lasting solution to the crisis are going on alongside this ill advised move, is shocking. This shouldn’t be the way.

Anger and vendetta should not be weaponized against a harmless youth who only but genuinely demands for his bright future. The fact that the youth delayed at applying the breaks when the ovation was loudest, until hoodlums threw spanners to their noble work, shouldn’t take away the import of their agitation.

The expression of public liberty openly, is an integral part of the needful process of democratisation every society needs. Democracy in Nigeria is still in its infancy and therefore, requires citizenship inclusion either by way of disagreement or outright contribution to her quick growth and more.

Democracy presupposes representative governance, supremacy of the constitution and the people’s right to determine their future through the power of the ballot. And this is what the Nigerian youths bargained for.

Our Democracy must be seen to be on the right path of growth and progress. And one of the ways to ensure a consistent democratisation process, is by allowing the citizenry the right to determine their future without recourse to violence and vandalism.

As we continue with the round table talks in the various fora, let the man-hunt for the assumed leaders of the protest stop. The youth cannot be the scapegoat of their own struggle.

World Orphans Day 2020: Dame Okowa, 05 Initiative Distribute Food Items In Delta

0

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –By Albert OGRAKA:

The 05 Initiative, a pet project of Her Excellency, Dame Edith Okowa, wife of Delta State Governor has sustained its celebration of orphans in Delta State to mark the World Orphans Day 2020.

The O5 Initiative, through its founder, Dame Okowa reached out to 48 registered orphanages and five families with adopted children in the state with various food items.

The low-key event which held at the Office of the Wife of Governor, Founder 05 Initiative, Government House Asaba on Monday, November 09, 2020 attracted the care-givers of the benefitting orphanages across the state, officials of 05 Initiative and few dignitaries.

An address signed and presented by Her Excellency, Dame Edith Okowa reads:

“It is with great joy that I welcome you to the 2020 World Orphans Day set aside by the United Nations. This is in honour of Mother Theresa of Calcutta who spent her life looking after the poor.

“The celebration which is billed for every second Monday in November is to raise awareness of the plight of Orphans, and to re-evaluate the way we treat the children around us especially the ones that are not our biological children. Most of them have lost both parents and it is no fault of theirs, some their parents are poor leaving them in an extremely vulnerable society.

“We have gathered here today to reason together and chat a new course on how to give our orphans a meaningful life. As we are aware, every child has a right to sound education, a right to protection and a right to a good life, but it is quite unfortunate to hear of daily happenings around us. Where a supposed mother who has a ten year old maid flogs the child with bleeding scars, will you mete this type of treatment to your own Child?

“Why am I particular about mothers? It is our God given responsibility to care for those living with us, therefore we should be mindful of the way we treat other people’s Children, because we will not always be where children are are.

“The issue of the care of Orphans is of immense importance to the O5 Initiative. For the past five years, we have worked with Care Givers in registered Orphanages across the state. This year has introduced a new way of life due to the Pandemic but it has not stopped us from attending regularly to the needs of our Children at the orphanages

“This year’s celebration will not be different, provision has been made for forty eight registered Orphanages and five adopted families including the Quintuplet (five girls). This is in fulfilment of our mission to feed the hungry and provide shelter for the homeless.

“Let me at this juncture appreciate our care givers for their constant love and care for my Children; It is indeed a huge task. I urge you to keep up the good work, do not forget to teach them in the way and the fear of the Lord; your labour of Love will be rewarded in due season.

“I thank God for providing the resources through our partners; individuals and corporate organizations, thank you for supporting the O5Vision. God bless you.

“Finally, my charge to us this morning is that we should look around, there is a helpless Child who needs love; I plead with you to sow the seed of kindness by this you are paving an easy path for your own Children. Go the extra mile, give that child many reasons to live and let us together Change our world One Person At A Time.”

One of the caregivers who received items on behalf of Paracletan Orphanage Home, Okutugbo, Okpanam, Rev. Mother Lauretta Ilechukwu, expressed gratitude for the wonderful work done by Her Excellency, Dame Edith Okowa and asked God to bless her and all those who contribute to the needy in the society.

Adewole appealed to the commissioner to redeem his promise to provide a bus for the chapel and also solicited for a takeoff grant, urged him to keep the chapel at heart on keeping promises for its further growth.

The Trump Tragedy

-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –By Julius OWEH:

The eternal beauty (perhaps plague) of democracy is the rights of the electorate to periodically choose theirs leaders and live with such choice. In 2016, the Americans made the choice of Donald John Trump as their leader and the man turned out to be the most divisive president in the annals of American history. Trump defeated Hilary Clinton because of two main factors. The Americans were tired of dynastic political families’ a la the Kennedy, the Bush and Bill Clinton as the spouse of Hilary Clinton. Secondly, the Americans despite their so called civilization and pride as the melting pot of the world were not really ready for a woman president. Today, however, with the election of Kamala Harris as the vice president elect, the Yankees are getting a step very close to a woman president.

Trump showed disdain for American democracy and the high office by constantly calling the results fake and that democrats were trying to steal the votes without evidence. His disdain for American democracy was further demonstrated by going to play golf on Saturday when the nation was in the ticket of calling results of the votes.  His twitter page became an avenue for rubbishing American democracy and went to the extent of calling on the electoral bodies to stop the count. His tweets of stop the count was like blowing the winds, no effect. The truth of the matter is that in America, there is no central electoral body and that in lines with the fines grains of federalism, the states control the electoral system and each state has its own laws on how elections should be conducted. If Trump were a Nigerian president, he could have ordered the central electoral body to stop the count and declare the election in his favour. This is where the opponents of devolution of power in Nigeria must draw inspiration from and do the right thing.

The election of Joe Biden in the November election with 279 electoral votes to Trump 214 (at the time of writing this piece) will correct the Trump tragedy. As the folks would say in Delta State. Trump is a man full of bad mouth, loosely translated means that of crude and undiplomatic language. He has no respect for his office and those who opposed his views. His system of campaign was to go personal and attacked Joe Biden and his family. It is on record that Trump wanted to stop the presidential ambition of Joe Biden by digging into the allegation of dirty deals with Ukraine. That led to his impeachment by the House of Representatives accused him of using his power to undermine the political gains of an opponent, who today is the president-elect.

People, political scientists and journalists are interested in who becomes the occupant of the Oval Office of the White House because of American strategic security and economic importance. The United States of America has massive nuclear weapons and is capable of destroying the whole world many times over. America is a strategic member of NATO. The only competitor of the United States is Russia with equally awesome power to destroy the world. Secondly, America has the best economy with only China as a rival. The American dollar is the unofficial currency of the world and these are the reasons politicians and leaders take more than a casual interest in who becomes the president and eventually in charge of the nuclear buttons.

The Trump presidency exposed the warts of the American system. He stoked the embers of racial inequality and police brutality targeted at the blacks. The election of Barack Obama could not wipe away these ingrained injustices. Trump destroyed the moral authority of America round the world. The death of George Floyd ,consequent demonstration of Black Lives Matter  and restrictions of black American voters are issues that Joe Biden must deal with in his campaign pledge of healing the country.

The victory speech of Joe Biden was highly presidential and set the tone for his presidency for a man ready to clean the Augean stable left by Trump.  Read part of that historic speech: I pledge to be a president, who seeks not to divide but to unify, who doesnt see red and blue states only see the United States. It is time to put away the harsh rhetoric, lower the temperature, see each other again, listen to each other again. And to make progress, we have to stop treating our opponents as enemies. It is time to heal`. It is only hoped that Trump and the Republican Party will accept the olive branch extended by Biden. On a lighter note, Joe Biden is the second catholic to become president after the era of John F. Kennedy.

We must not be carried away by the victory of Biden to expect radical changes in American foreign policy. American strategic interests remain – control of the United Nations, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, (NATO),the World Trade Organization and the flow of trade. For us in Nigeria, the next president will never describe Nigeria in uncomplimentary terms and have disdain for our leaders. We must accept the beauty of democracy and that the name Federal Republic of Nigeria should be implemented in deed and in truth. State Government powers should be well defined and opponents of devolution of power should have a changed mindset and that the conduct of election should not be seen as war. In the November 3 presidential election, there were no police men and military men guarding the polling booths, no snatching of ballot papers. Election is a civic duty that should be done in peaceful atmosphere. Perhaps, the only thing Trump copied from our politicians is not to accept the verdict of the electorate and use the judiciary to change the electoral mandate of the people.

Trump can continue with his many legal challenges and he will meet defeat. The American people have spoken and as from January 20, 2021, he will have enough time to play golf and continue as the Twitter-in-chief of the United States of America.

General Buratai’s Doctrine On Probity

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –By Okanga AGILA:

Love or hate Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai, but what catches that attention of everyone around him is his sagacious endowments and infectious aura are his admirably constant leadership qualities. It has secured and led him to break new grounds to the bewilderment of his contemporaries in Nigeria.

He directs timely focus to catchy areas and adopts the necessary modalities to achieve his intended results. Gen. Buratai has excellently dispensed himself in leadership as an inseparable stickler, conformist and advocate of acquiescence with the highest standards of probity, public morality, transparency and accountability in the Nigerian Army.

Gen. Buratai is the self-effacing Borno born soldier, leadership pundit, Boko Haram’s greatest adversary in recent times, Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and helmsman of the counter-insurgency operations in the country. He rolls in patriotic ambience all the times and repeatedly, he has proven his prowess not only in the trenches, but in leadership as an administrator with immense treasures.

Gen. Buratai has a resonant intolerance for corruption, like his principal, the Commander-In-Chief of Nigerian Armed Forces, President Muhammadu Buhari. Therefore, the Army Chief aggressively observes and pushes for the entrenchment and commitment to the culture of responsiveness, probity, prudence and accountable responsibility in the Nigerian Army.

In the last five years, the reformist Gen. Buratai has relentlessly implanted in the heart and psyche of every Nigerian soldier, the values of public morality, probity and accountability in the service of the nation. Where he sights a schism that might serve as a stumbling block to the attainment of these values, he quickly bridges them to raise a platform for smooth compliance.

A few days ago, in Abuja, Gen. Buratai did the needful. He consented to the Nigerian Army’s collaboration with the Code of Conduct Bureau for a two-day workshop on “compliance with assets declaration and Code of Conduct for Officers and Soldiers.” Assets declaration by some public leaders in Nigeria has been a thorny issue, especially for those who acquired stupendously suspicious wealth while holding public office.

As usual, Gen. Buratai has staged out to severe the Nigerian Army from this damaging cusp of national malaise. The talk -shop, learning and brainstorming forum, facilitated by Go-Getters Consulting Limited, targeted all Nigerian Army personnel entrusted with leadership responsibilities to enliven their memories on the importance of Assets Declaration and adherence to prescriptions of the Code of Conduct as focal public servants.

It is to his glorious credit that from the outset when Gen. Buratai was appointed the COAS, he discerned clearly the prime position of public morality and its contribution to the credibility of government. Leaders of the Nigerian Military in the preceding administration had credibility problems because of alleged pervasive and baffling corruption in the prosecution of the then raging Boko Haram insurgency.

Transparency International (TI) consistently had verbal battles with the Nigerian Government and Nigerian Military’s top hierarchy over same issues which some analysts claimed stifled the war on insurgency.

Therefore, desirous to win the war on terror, Gen. Buratai realized that the only option is the internal cleansing of the Nigerian Army of the proclivity to lucre. He believed without a doubt that the only action which would reposition the Nigerian Army to pride itself as a responsible institution is absolute compliance with the best etiquettes on transparency, accountability and probity.

The Army Chief therefore, immediately re-organized the Accounts Department of the Nigerian Army, migrated soldiers to IPPIS payment system and standardized procurements procedures by ensuring strict conformity with Public Procurement (BPP) laws as well as stamped transparency and prudence in financial management of the lean resources of the Army. Gen. Buratai’s renewed attention on assets declaration for officers and men at the leadership level in the Nigerian Army is the latest trademark badge of his administration.

Speaking at the two-day workshop, Gen. Tukur Buratai implored, officers and men of the Nigerian Army to absorb the culture of accountability, transparency and probity in their operations. In very certain terms, Gen. Buratai informed personnel of the Nigerian Army that they have no alternative than to fulfill their obligations as public officers in line with the provisions of the fifth schedule of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution.

Gen. Buratai thundered, “the Nigerian Army under my leadership is desirous to maintaining the highest standard of accountability in the conduct of our activities, consistent with the requirements and behaviours of public officers which conform with the highest standard of probity, public morality, transparency and accountability.”

The workshop which was packaged to practically tutor participants on filling of assets declaration forms and all the nitty-gritty required to comply with assets declaration for Code of Conduct for public officers is to be replicated in all the Army Divisions in Nigeria by the directive of the Army Chief. He explained that “My directive is premised on the belief that every person of Nigerian army entrusted with leadership responsibility must understand the primacy of asset declaration and code of conduct for public officers and complying with all its provisions and requirements.”

Gen. Buratai has again distinguished himself as a rare gem in the leadership spectrum of Nigeria. Whereas, many heads of government establishments hedge accountability and declaration of assets, Buratai is leading from the front and by example as an ambassador of the Code of Conduct. Without any prompting, Gen. Buratai re-declared his assets when he was appointed the COAS in 2015.

And it is Gen. Buratai’s firm conviction that the fight against Boko Haram insurgency can never be successful unless corruption in the Nigerian Army is identified and uprooted from its source in consonance with the preachments of President Buhari. He reminded officers and soldiers at the workshop of its imperative because “…accountability is a prerequisite for driving the fight against corruption which is one of the major focus of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.”

The iconic Army boss works and dreams in the shadows of the thinking or replicate the actions of Mr. President. His identity has become synonymous with how a committed public officer should conduct himself in leadership by inculcating fiscal discipline in subordinates. He spares no officer or soldier who indulges in acts of sleaze. The Army Chief loathes anyone who does anything inimical to the success of the Nigerian Army in prosecuting a victorious war against Boko Haram insurgents, ISWAP terrorists and other criminal elements tormenting Nigeria.

Therefore, as the czar of accountable leadership, Gen. Buratai’s exemplary passion for the promotion of probity and transparency in the conduct of public officials is worthy of emulation by other Nigerians entrusted with leadership. As the old cliché goes, leadership is a collective responsibility and every Nigerian must strive to show a difference and the enthusiasm of selfless service wherever he superintends like the imprints or obsession in Gen. Buratai on making the difference in the Nigerian Army.

DAME OKOWA UNVEILS MORE SICKLE CELL CLINICS *As 05 Initiative Makes Facilities Accessible To Deltans

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –By Albert OGRAKA:

The 05 Initiative, a human and health development pet project of the wife of the Delta State Governor, Dame Edith Okowa, has continued to brace up in it’s efforts to make Sickle Cell Clinical facilities readily available to the people.

The founder, Dame Okowa, on Tuesday, November 03, 2020, commissioned two sickle cell clinics at Oshimili North Local Government Area of the state.

The inaugurated clinics at Akwukwu-Igbo and Ibusa General Hospitals respectively, has increased the number of sickle cell clinics established across the various local government areas of the state.

Having previously established 13 sickle cell clinics across 13 different local government areas, Dame Okowa explained that the peculiar nature of Oshimili North local government area, especially with regards to it’s vastness gave rise to the need to establish two centres in the local government.

Some of the facilities commissioned at the various clinics include Haematospin machines, genotype tanks, electrophoresis machines, stocks of reagents to last about five years, as well as refurbished laboratories.

“The commissioning of these clinics has been a long term desire so as to help cater for the health needs of those living with sickle cell disorder.

“Beyond establishing these clinics however, our desire is to make these facilities accessible to those who need it and that is why we have gone against the initial tradition by establishing two clinics in this local government so that people can access it from different areas”, the wife of the Governor explained.

Dame Okowa therefore, cautioned intending couples not to ignore the need for genotype check up before taking marital decisions to avoid giving birth to children with the sickle cell disorder.

According to her, “It is our desire to see that the peculiar needs of  these ‘warriors’, as we choose to call them, are met in the midst of the teeming health challenges of the growing population. This is exactly why we are establishing special clinics that would be accessible to them”.

The O5 Initiative founder enjoined the community to make proper use of the facilities  for the benefit the people, emphasizing that the equipments are neither to be sold nor to be relocated to a different location.

The Director General of the Initiative, Mrs. Oghenekevwe Agas, earlier in her address, emphasized that the projects were in line with the vision of O5 Initiative, which is centred on making life bearable for those who need help.

Member representing Oshimili North State Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon Pat Ajudua, while playing host the First Lady at both centres, lent her appreciation to the wife of the Governor for the initiative, describing it as laudable.

Also present at the occasion was the state Commissioner for health and the ministry’s permanent Secretary, Dr. Mordi Ononye and Dr. Minnie Oseji, who both gave the assurance that the sickle cell disorder is far from being a death sentence, but rather a health situation that can be managed, given adequate information and medical attention.

Other dignitaries who also witnessed the event were the Vice Chancellor, Delta State University and Special Adviser to the state Governor on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Prof Andy Egwuyenga and Dr. Andy Ilabor.

The event also witnessed Fred’s blood tests for members of the community, including school children.

Journalists Decry Continued Undermining of Media by Gov’s Media Aide

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA):

Members of the Borno State Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists on Tuesday raised the alarm over continued attempts by one of the media aides to Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum to undermine the working of the media.

A statement by the Chairman of the Chapel, Alhaji Haruna Dauda-Biu, said the antics of the media aide, Baba-Sheikh Haruna could no longer be tolerated as it is impugning on press freedom and making their job as journalists herculean.

Dauda-Biu said more disheartening is the fact that the aide rode to the office as the Chairman of the Borno State Chapter of the NUJ and should be known better what press freedom is all about and the importance of media correspondents in publicising the activities of his principal and acting as the watchdog.

The statement read: “It is disheartening to observe that in recent times there seems to be a deliberate attempt by the officer to prevent members of the Correspondents’ chapel ,who represent various national and international media outfits from doing their jobs.

“The Senior Special Assistant on Media, Baba-Sheikh Haruna who recently assumed the supervisory role of the Governor’s media affairs has continued to engage in an unprofessional conduct by refusing to invite or inform journalists of important public engagements or functions of the Governor in the state.

“This singular act negates the provision of section 22 of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended which empowers the press to function freely without any form of hindrance.”

The statement added that: “The Correspondents’ Chapel wishes to remind the SSA Media that good governance and accountability, which his principal, His Excellency Governor Babagana Zulum stands for, can only be achieved when the media is allowed to cover and report the activities of government for effective checks and balances.”

It was alleged in the statement that:” The Chapel has on several occasions tried to draw Mr Baba-Sheikh Haruna’s attention to this unbecoming attitude but to no avail.”

The statement however warned that:” To this end, therefore, the Chapel will no longer condone any attempt by Mr Baba-Sheikh Haruna or those he delegates to undermine press freedom in Borno state.”

Sanwo-Olu’s Kangaroo Court On Lekki

-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –By Philip AGBESE:

Anyone taken aback by the turn of events around the #EndSARS protests and the Lekki Toll Gate conundrum in Lagos State must have been negligent of the events that led to the 2019 election that produced Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the state governor. He emerged candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in a bitterly fought primary between him and his predecessor, Akinwunmi Ambode, who lost out to the well-oiled machinery of Sanwo-Olu’s godfather.
Almost one year and half later, Ambode’s warnings to Lagos state’s voting population have proven clairvoyant, almost prophetic. His successor has proven to be disaster on steroids. His shambolic running of the state perfected the environment that primed the young population of the state into the baying mob that has left over N1 trillion in destruction of public infrastructure and private property.

Because I was not dismissive of the warnings from Ambode at that time, I am not surprised at the happenings in Lagos State, especially Lekki. After all Mr. Ambode warned but no one listened. He cautioned that his then challenger’s state of mind should be interrogated but people thought everything was politics. Ambode told us preparatory to the electioneering campaign that this man has a health issue but it was waved aside.
It is no wonder that Sanwo-Olu’s singular mishandling of the #EndSARS protests plunged the country into chaos. When the protests first began, rather than play the firm leadership roles expected of him, he preferred to join the protestors thinking erroneously that prancing and chanting with the protestors will lessen their anger at the apparent failings of his government that had worsened whatever brunt the people were bearing from brutal policemen.
Everything was fine while the protestors obstructed and inconvenienced other Nigerians and their businesses. The moment they moved to Lekki Toll Plaza, and threatened the economic interests of the governor’s godfather, his dark side emerged. He could have let them be and allowed his godfather suffer the inconvenience of fleecing the state for a few days but he certainly is not given to such patience. So the governor lost his cool and allowed forces beyond the state take over.
Soldiers fired into the air, with video evidence to prove, when the protest at Lekki Toll Gate was becoming menacing. Sanwo-Olu’s co-protestors claimed a massacre – we should forget that they never had bodies o blood stain to prove that such carnage existed only in the tortured subconscious of the raging cyber mob of clout chasers, fledging celebrities and paid activists.

In the classical Sanwo-Olu style, knowing what he has done and the coming consequences, he did not call for Federal support even though he knew he has no capacity to contain what he has triggered. To compound things, he continued with his ill advised plan and went on to bait his associates in the picket line when he asserted that no life was lost when that was not the agreed script with his protesting associates. What followed was complete chaos. Lagos burned. Sanwo-Olu’s hoodlums burned people’s businesses as retaliation for the losses his boss has supposedly suffered. Government and private property burned at the hands of the hoodlums and the governor added his ancestral home for good measure so that he won’t be suspected as being part of the chaos machine that ruined Lagos. The sad part of that war on Nigeria was the high casualty rate inflicted on law enforcement officers, policemen and others on legitimate duty.

Tragically, Lagos set the pace for the wave of violence that spread across the country. The looting was mindless. It followed the Sanwo-Olu template. It became so effective that it laid waste to the country in a matter of days.
In the whole of this, the Sanwo-Olu was wrapped and entrapped by his own many contradictory statements like when he said he tried to call the President when Lagos was being pulled down by #EndSARS protesters or hoodlums as they were later labelled. The same man said that he did not know where the soldiers who shot into the air came from. Later he said he invited them but did not ask them to shoot. Sanwo-Olu declared that no one died from the incident only to return with news of a casualty from blunt force trauma.

Not done with inconsistency in utterances, the governor added insensitivity to his already lacklustre handling of the crisis when he received his godfather, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in audience. Sources said the latter flew into France and was forced home by terrorist Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) even though there was a spin to create the impression that the Jagaban was in Lekki on the night of the pandemonium and no one saw him. That visit was what jolted Sanwo-Olu’s memory that some persons died at Lekki Toll Gate, but he forgot as a result of memory lapse.

It became necessary for the governor to attempt hiding behind one finger as he hurriedly cobbled together a Judicial Panel of Inquiry, which on the surface is the legitimate step to take but one that Sanwo-Olu managed to taint with his see-saw predisposition. There is the notion of Kangaroo court and that is what the Lagos state governor has become.
According to Wikipedia, “A kangaroo court is a court that ignores recognized standards of law or justice and often carries little or no official standing in the territory within which it resides. A kangaroo court may ignore due process and come to a predetermined conclusion.”
Sanwo-Olu did not even attempt the pretence of making it appear as if the Judicial Panel, like a court, will determine its own conclusion. He set up the Panel and went about making pronouncements that already rubbished whatever the panel will come up with. He has made his own words cathedral over Lagos and Lagosians. This is the Kangaroo hall of shame where helpless eminent Nigerians will be made to sign an already prepared script .
This shame that the governor is exporting from Lagos to the rest of the country is one everyone must watch with keen interest even when they find neither entertainment nor value in it. We must watch closely because, just as he precipitated the violence that enveloped the country, Sanwo-Olu may yet export his diseased concept of a judicial panel to the rest of Nigeria, which will effectively doom the country. As we watch the Lagos Governor squirm in the miasma he concocted, we must ask a fair question. Can a judicial panel of inquiry constituted by Sanwo-Olu still he trusted to do justice? The answer is no. He cannot and must not be a judge in his own case.

Okowa Recounts #EndSARS Experience

-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –By Fidelis EGUGBO :

A leader always exudes confidence when he is sure that his followers are comfortable and happy. So, it was heartwarming, indeed, a welcome relief, to see Delta Caucus in the House of Representatives, led by the Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu, paying a solidarity visit to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, on Wednesday at Government House, Asaba.

That visit is very significant as it shows that the lawmakers, though, far away in Abuja, are abreast with what is happening in their state. It also shows that sons and daughters of the state reckon that the State Government alone cannot bear the brunt of the colossal damage done as a result of the #EndSARS protest.

Elumelu, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, told the governor that the lawmakers were on a solidarity visit to him to empathise with him and the people of the state over the unfortunate destruction of public buildings by hoodlums during the #EndSARS protests.

He announced the donation of N150 million by members of the caucus to support the re-building of the burnt High Court building in Asaba, the state capital.

Hopefully, that donation will spur other well-to-do Deltans and corporate organisations to join hands with the Delta State Government to speedily rebuild the damaged structures and also, instill in residents with similar destructive motives the need to desist from further damage of public and private property in the state.

During that visit, the obvious feeling of pains felt by Governor Okowa was not lost on his guests as he explained how he tried to manage the situation, disclosing that lives were lost in the state as a result of the protest.

Below is the speech of the governor during the visit. Happy reading:

“I truly must be very thankful to you for this visit and the show of love for your dear state, Delta. I do recall that, in this year alone, this is the third time you are coming as a group of NASS members, to come to be with us at the moment of difficulties. Twice you came when we had issues concerning the COVID-19 infections; and, today, you are here again.

“I truly must let you know that I appreciate you very greatly because you feel for your people and you are concerned about the things that take place in Delta State.

“On behalf of the government and the people of Delta State, I want to thank you for always being there for the people of Delta.

“Your visit shows the unity amongst you as a team in NASS and that is also, very important for us a state. It is good to know that our own are united and it is possible for us to speak with one voice and to ensure that what is due to Delta State comes to Delta.

“Yes, we have had difficulties in the course of this year particularly across the nation. With the COVID-19, it was a situation across the globe and then, the flooding and now the #EndSars protest which were peaceful and which we gave a voice to because we believed that the youths who set out to conduct the #Endsars protest had a reason and their voice needed to be listened to.

“Apart from myself, several other governors did address them, and we understood that they had their pains and there was the need for reforms.

“Just as that was going on, unfortunately on the 20th of October, an incident took place in Lekki which turned the whole thing away from the peaceful protest to wanton destruction of property and looting, which is very unfortunate.

“Here in Delta State, we did notice by Tuesday, first that there were infiltrations from outside the state into the #EndSARS protesters and we did draw the attention of their influencers, asking them to watch very closely so that their protest will not be gradually hijacked. By Wednesday, that was also noticed and then the crisis had started in Lagos.

“The security agences were very professional in Delta. There is no doubt about that and they tried to manage the situation but by Wednesday night, the 21st, it went burst of course and the destruction did take place obviously not by Deltans but by those infiltrators.

“It is a very sad thing for us because the High Court building on Ibusa Road, the Federal Road Safety Corps (state operational office) and where they also keep some of their seized vehicles, and the Magistrate Court were also torched. The Ministry of Justice was heavily vandalized and then, of course, the various beautification projects that we had were destroyed.

“I don’t know why they were so concerned about that and they started destroying them and burning some. But, thank God the security agencies stood up and were able to confront the situation and we have been able to ensure that there is no further destruction.

“That of Warri area, unfortunately, was not from the public, it was within the prison. In an attempt to cause some problem so that they could escape, they, from within the prison, set a part of the prison on fire.

“It was a very difficult situation to manage, but today we thank God that we have been able to manage it. Unfortunately, few people lost their lives, one in the Warri area who was knocked down by a truck. It was obviously not from the police. One person in Sapele, unfortunately too, was knocked down by a truck.

“Here in Asaba, on that Wednesday night, a soldier who was on duty, not from within the brigade in Asaba here, but whoç was on transit to Anambra State, was killed on the expressway and two of our youths were also killed on Thursday by the external infiltrators when the youths went out on a campaign mission to various portals in Asaba that people should please stay peaceful, and that they were not going to tolerate a situation where they (protesters) begin to destroy the infrastructure that had already been put in place in Asaba.

“Unfortunately, they were attacked amd we lost two of them, one from Asaba and the other one from Oko.

“Another ugly incident that would have taken place was the issue of palliative looting but luckily that was managed because there was nothing to loot. The CA-COVID items were delivered to us in September and as soon as the distribution was launched, we ensured that within two weeks it was distributed to all 270 wards of the state.

“They were specifically meant for the very indigent in every ward, so,197 families in every ward received the items as specified by CA-COVID and every single thing had been distributed.

“So, when the information came in and within the social media, the misinformation was there. A large crowd did gather around the Event Centre but we opened it up for them to see that it was empty. So, we thank God for that.

“Unfortunately, in Sapele, a supermarket was invaded and our brother’s place was also invaded. It is quite unfortunate, but we thank God that everything has calmed down. The peace has began to return but we are still very much on our toes, being very watchful realising that there are external factors trying to cause disturbance to the peace that we have.

“Attempts were made to destroy several police stations but unfortunately for the hoodlums, they were not able to break into any of them. And we thank God that the police, the military and the Department of State Services have been working very closely with each other to ensure peace.

“I must also pay very good tributes to some of our well-meaning youths, the community youths, the vigilante youths from the various communities. They stood up to ensure that they did not allow any further destruction, for which we must be very thankful to all our youths across the various communities in the state.

“So, calm has returned and we thank God, hoping that we stay vigilant. I also intend to have town hall meetings, in Warri with a select group of youths and also in Asaba.

“That is already being planned, where we will be able to talk with some of our youths, continue to engage them, continue to make them understand that working together in partnership, we can improve the governance structure.
And that all we need to do is to ensure that there is a reasonable level of communication, because we do not want our youths to be misinformed. In misinformation, all kind of activities can truly take place that may not be in the best interest of the state. So, we want to ensure that we continuously communicate with them, particularly through the Ministry of Youth Development, and that we are already achieving to a large extent.

“We have also inaugurated the Panel of Enquiry, and that panel will formally start sitting on Monday, the 2nd of November, to take complaints from all persons who have been brutalised or who have had their loved ones killed or brutalised in the course of the actions of the (disbanded) SARS in the last several years.

“So, we hope that people will come up to the panel with evidence and formally report so that investigations can be carried out. We are also in the process of constituting what we call a Special Security and Human Rights Committee. The committee will look at every action of every security agency particularly with any special team that is put in place to ensure that they work within the ambits of the law. And, I think that as we hold town hall/community meetings with the youths in the state, we will be able to formally communicate this to them and to make them realise that they have a place to report to in case anybody is unprofessional in his or her relationship with them.

“I also want to appeal to our youths that it is important that even as we ask for the end of SARS and for the end of all forms of brutality and killings, we must also continue to assist both the government and law enforcement agencies to ensure that the criminal elements within the society are not aided and that they are not encouraged in any manner to continue with their criminality.

“It is important that we try to keep ourselves focused because their well-intended protest was hijacked by criminal elements in the society. And, it came to a stage where they actually lost control of the protest. But thank God, they had already put forth their voice and the nation, both at the national and the sub-national levels have already come to understand what exactly their pains are.

“So, we want to urge that every Nigerian youth must stand up to ensure that even as we preach the right things, even as we ask for reforms, that we also will continue to encourage a situation where the criminal elements are not in any manner covered up or assisted to do the wrong things in the land. And, I know that majority of them stand for what is right for this country. I hope that our attention having been drawn to some of the pains that our youths are going through, that we will as government, even as legislators, continue to do a rethink, a partnership, with the younger ones to understand their feelings, so that we are able to address the issues that have been raised. Not only concerning the issues of security but on how to meaningfully ensure that they are engaged and they are productive, both for themselves and the nation.

“I want to specifically thank you people for this visit and to thank you specially for the promise that you have made in the repairs of the High Court building. That is actually paying back to the society and it is only God that can replenish this which is coming out of your pockets. I want to thank you, I want to appreciate this visit and I am sure that all Deltans do appreciate your concern and we pray that God will continue to enable you to perform your duties to the admiration of your constituents.

Thank you and God bless you.”

HOODLUMISM IN NIGERIA: A CLOSER LOOK

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –By Austen AKHAGBEME:

One of the most embarrassing situations today in Nigeria, especially at the wake of the recent hashtag protests, is the menace of Hoodlums everywhere.

Their coordinated activities and the near similar methods of operation points to a possible existence of an unknown drummer in this macabre dance.

Whether the drummer is a human personality (an aggrieved victim of the vagaries of our harsh society) or the very unfriendly reality of our daily existence in a Nation that is rich with poor citizens, the menace of the “street” hoodlums is very disconcerting.

Agreed that crime and criminality itself, is a social problem especially in developing societies, the recent emergence of a huge number of people dangerously inclined to perpetuate evil while unleashing mayhem on their fellow citizens leaves much to be desired.

Is this truly the way we are? Do we always have this propensity to cause pain to others? Or is it a new emotional trait, orchestrated by the harshest of seasons and times such as we’re witnessing now?

These are questions that bothers the mind whose answers, too, will be full of questions and more questions.

There’s no denying the fact that the problem of hoodlumism in Nigeria is of a cyclical origin. Where it begins is as difficult to trace or know as that of the story of who comes first between the chicken and the egg.

The Society produced the hoodlums, overt or covert, no doubt. Then the more intelligent and educated hoodlums gets into positions of authority and steal the commonwealth. This further create more street hoodlums and the circle continues.

So, what we see today is the menace of street hoodlums birthed years ago by the educated, unpatriotic and political hoodlums in places of authority in our society especially in governmental circles.

As we condemn the activities of looters, arsonists, thieves all in the name of hoodlumism, let us also tilt our searchlight to the most “unlikely ” quarters and raise our voices to condemn the pillaging of our common patrimony in all its ramifications.

-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –By Albert OGRAKA:

Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, today, Tuesday, October 27, 2020 presented the Appropriation Bill of N378.48 billion for 2021 to the state House of Assembly for consideration.

The budget presentation earlier scheduled for Thursday, October 22, 2020 was jettisoned as a result of the #ENDSARS protest that rocked the nation.

Christened “Budget of Recovery’’, the governor revealed that the Bill was made up of N207.52 billion for Capital Expenditure and N171.32 billion for Recurrent Expenditure.

He said that capital expenditure constituted 54.76 per cent of the Budget while 45.24 per cent represented recurrent expenditure, and explained that the allocations were consistent with his administration’s agenda of spending more on projects and programmes that would impact directly on socio-economic wellbeing of Deltans.

The 2021 budget is N96.2 billion or 34.05 per cent higher than the N282 billion revised approved budget of 2020.

The governor said that the 2021 budget proposals reinforced the state government’s commitment to road infrastructure, education, health , job and wealth creation programmes as the principal-drivers of the Stronger Delta agenda.

According to him, N113 billion, representing 89.94 per cent of the capital budget is allocated to the economic sector while N35 billion is allocated to the social sector; the administration sector got 10.93 billion and the regional sector, N42 billion.

“In 2021, we propose to spend N66.66 billion on Road Infrastructure; N6.79 billion on Health; Education will gulp N23.55 billion; Agriculture, N2.04 billion and Water Sector, N1.83 billion.

“Job and Wealth Creation Bureau will gulp N1 Billion and Youth Development, N1.25 billion. These key sectors are very essential in our 2021 budget,” Okowa said.

He said that budget, which was derived from the state’s 2021-2023 FSP/MTEF, was anchored on crude oil production benchmark of 1.86 mbpd, oil price of 40 dollars per barrel, exchange rate of N379 per dollar, National Real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth of three per cent and 11.95 national inflation rate

He disclosed that since 2015, his administration had progressively increased its annual spending on education infrastructure and would continue to scale up investments in the sector as the state continued with plans to establish nine new technical colleges to take off in the 2021/2022 academic session.

The governor pointed out that due to the impact of the COVID-19 on the global economy, government spending was severely hampered by the pandemic, and that Delta was no exception.

He, therefore, stated that “the proposed 2021 Budget for Delta is primarily focused on protecting and supporting our people in a COVID-19 environment, accelerating infrastructural renewal, incentivizing growth, enhancing job creation, engendering social inclusion and developing sustainably.

“Overall, the proposed 2021 Budget is predicated on inclusive economic growth that is sustainable and people-centred, with strengthening fiscal sustainability through increased efficiency in spending, improved revenue mobilization and debt sustainability.

“It also entails improving processes and systems in Public Financial Management, and Monitoring and Evaluation, to bolster better public sector service delivery.”

Welcoming the governor earlier to the House of Assembly’s chamber, the Speaker, Chief Sheriff Oborevwori, had said that with the feat achieved by the current administration in five years, the House would continue to support the state government through passage of people-oriented and development-driven legislations.

“We are more than ready to cooperate with the Executive to develop a smart, sustainable and knowledge-based economy that will be the envy of all,” the speaker assured.

Motion to accept the Appropriation Bill for consideration was moved by the Majority Leader of the House, Mr Tim Owhefere and was seconded by the Minority Leader, Mr Innocent Anidi.

The lawmakers also approved a motion, slating the second reading of the Bill for Oct. 28, 2020.

FALSE PUBLICATION: OGBE SPITS FIRE, THREATENS REDRESS FOR DEFAMATION

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –From Michael EKOKORUWE:

The chairman of All branches of Irri indigenes in Diaspora, Mr. Eniye Isaac Ogbe, has condemned in strong terms the malicious false online publication by Daily Watch on 24th of October 2020 with the caption, “Alleged Theft: Irri Indigenes in Diaspora urge security agents to arrest Culprit” and described it as misleading, devoid of truth and plot by Mr. Adigheji Orahemo to cause panic and anarchy in Irri community, Isoko South local government area.

Ogbe stated that the purported publication falsely used his name to call for the arrest of Mr. Lucky Obuwaye and Chief Duke Coast by security agents for allegedly stealing and selling of BEDEC step-down and amoured cables of Irri community, noting that Orahemo has ridiculed his personality and caused tension among the people of the area through unrepentant aggrandizement.

According to Ogbe, Mr. Orahemo has lied against him and he will seek redress at the appropriate time, adding that the opinion of community stakeholders and leaders was never sought as claimed. He cautioned Orahemo to desist from using Irri indigenes in Diaspora as tool to perpetrate peddling of fake information in the community.

“Irri indigenes in Diaspora at no time saw crane lifting a stolen step-down into a heavy duty vehicle (a maximum size truck) in a broad day light as falsely published by Mr. Orahemo who also claimed that the step-down transformer and amoured cables were stolen on the 2nd of July, 2020.” Ogbe said.

According to the branch chairman, the case at Oleh police station between Orahema and Obuwaye is an individual desperation to cause disaffection and confusion between Mr. Lucky Obowaye led executives and Irri community, adding that Orahemo has become a perpetual liar that uses any person’s name to forment trouble because of greed.

Recall that, Obowaye while speaking to Journalists said, the publication alleging the theft of a mini – step – down and cables of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), in Irri community, is false and a deliberate attempt by Mr. Adigheji Orahemo and Chief N.U. Akpor to scuttle the leadership of the present administration and to create unnecessary tension in the peaceful community.

He maintained that the faulty step down sent for repairs was sold due to costs of maintenance, adding that the proceeds were channeled towards the repairs of other faulty transformers within the community.

Obowaye noted that the step – down was given to Irri community by Agip oil company as part of their MOU and not BEDC property as alleged by Mr. Adigheji. He said, the step – down was installed by late Apostle Fred Adebe in 2005.

Obowaye said, “Following the invitation of the police over the preposterous complain of Mr. Adigheji Orahemo, an apt response and clarifications over the sales of the step – down was documented just as the President General of Irri Federal Union, Chief Adonis Obuwheri condemned the invitation and asked the police to release Mr. Obowaye.

The president general urged the public to disregard the frivolous publication, assuring that Irri community has been peaceful and warned anybody making unguarded statements capable of causing crises to steer clear.

A SEASON OF DISTRUST

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –By Austen AKHAGBEME:

As the eerie smoke seems to be settling down and the rivers of tears simmers, distrust, accusations and counter accusations seems to be the order of the day in Nigeria. Those who murdered sleep are sleeping no more.

Just as intrinsically complicated as the mayhem is, so are the explanations and the deluge of conspiracy theories flying around.

I have made up my mind not to go digging too much as to the remote and immediate cause of the near two week madness untill what resembles the truth resurfaced. Or else, your perspective could just end up as another endless conspiracy theory.

But one thing is sure: we have goofed badly. We have once again exposed ourselves to ridicule and deepened our ever yawning fault lines. We have demonstrated genuine anger that took over our emotions and made us injure ourselves. And this is tragic.

In the melee that ensued, we have seen how fickle and fragile human emotions are and how easily persuaded to do good or evil the human person is. We saw the wickedness of those who claimed to love us and also the love of those who we distatefully ignore and relegate.

We have all become the victim of unrestrained anger with the custodians of the country we love so dearly, yet wouldn’t mind destroying to prove a point.

So much lessons to learn in just two weeks of national anger and “rebirth”. From lessons of patriotism to that of consequences of greed and elite gluttony. From lessons on emotional intelligence and social media manipulation to that of Ethnic downplaying, hate, official insensitivity and citizenship disenchantment and fury.

Spiralling bandwagon took negative dimension as states were being consumed unreservedly in truth and untruths. Half truths, naked truths and absolute lies became concubine in a beautiful ambivalence that even the devil trembled. It was truly a bad story.

Those who dragged tribal connotation and colouration into the crisis angered me the most. Hunger, poverty, deprivation and depression have no tribe, tongue or creed; neither do market forces.

Ours was genuine anger gone awry; agitation hijacked and thrown overboard by conflicting influences, both local and foreign.
But we’re back home to our senses and our humaness. But things are no longer the same.

Everyone must perform his role in restoring hope and confidence to our embattled union. And this must begin with those who have chosen to lead us. Leadership is by example. As they lead, we follow. If they make mistakes, we tell them to make amend. The relationship between the leaders and the led in Nigeria must be symbiotic and not parasitic.

#ENDSARS Protest: ActionAid Wants Buhari To Address Nation, Stop Looming Anarchy

-Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –From Mike SOGBOLO (North East Bureau):

ActionAid Nigeria has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately act as a father by addressing the nation and stop the ongoing ENDSARS protesting from degenerating into full scale anarchy.

The organisation, in a signed statement on Monday by it’s Country Director, Ene Obi said the President needs to act now before it is too late.

The statement read: “ActionAid Nigeria (AAN) has been following the unfolding events amidst the agitations by the citizens and has deemed it fit to further address emerging trends in the ongoing protest.

“The protest has moved from being a social media campaign to a peaceful protest by Nigerians across the globe in the last 13 days, with clear demands on the abolition of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad accused of unlawful arrests, torture, and extra-judicial killings.”

The statement added: “ActionAid Nigeria has observed that the peaceful protest is gaining more momentum across the country, with Young People airing their grievances on rights violations and the need for an overhaul of the country’s security and governance architecture. However, the latest twist and turns in the ongoing protest, specifically the pockets of hijacks by unknown elements with unending attacks on peaceful protesters; the attack on the governor of Osun State; the loss of lives and property of protesters and innocent citizens; and most recently the prison break, and destruction of government properties in Edo State, the multitude of cars burnt in Apo, Abuja, calls for concern and swift action before the situation degenerates into full swing anarchy.“

The statement further read: “ActionAid Nigeria therefore calls on President Muhammadu Buhari, to fully address the nation in a national broadcast as a Father, Leader, and the President of Nigeria, with the mandate of the people to manage the affairs of the country and give clear-cut responses to the demands of the protesters before it is too late.”

It said: “Nigerians anticipate clear plans, timelines, and commitments, which will be in form of a pact with the citizens. The President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, should see this as an opportunity to write his name in the sands of time by starting the process of transforming this country especially by responding to the demands of citizens.

“ActionAid Nigeria also call on security agencies to keep securing the streets to get unscrupulous elements with illegitimate interests off the peaceful protests, while respecting the rights of peaceful protesters.

“We applaud the resolve of Nigerian youths leading the revival across the country and the resolute to hold government to account. However, it is pertinent that decorum is maintained while resisting any calculated attempts by unknown elements to disrupt, the just cause for total reformation of our country, Nigeria.“

We have bigger issues of floods, diseases and pandemics, lack of economic development, high youth unemployment, poverty, ill-equipped colleges and hospitals, lack of electricity, lack of clean drinking water, bad roads, and environmental pollution. The list goes on! How do we solve these problems if we continue to kill each other? We should stay strongly united as one people to confront the bigger threats that we face, even more so as a minority of minorities in Nigeria. This barbaric acts must stop now.

Let us pray for our homeland and the families of the victims. May their gentle souls rest in perfect peace!

OF PREDATORS AND VICTIMS

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA)By Austen AKHAGBEME:

In Nigeria today, times are tough, tempers are high, feathers are being ruffled, no thanks to the raging hashtag protest by the rampaging but hitherto ” lazy” Nigeria youth. It has become a test of resolve between predators and victims.

Those whose conscience are smeared with hot iron, who never care a hoot about the lives of their neighbours are beginning to realise the ephemerality of their bloated, brutish resolve versus their sheer humanity afterall.

The boys are angry, obviously. They’re angry over a supposed friend turned foe, a supposed protector turned tormentor. They’re miffed about a society that gives them undulating playing field to express their youthful energy and realise their age long aspirations. They’re ready to make a fight by protest and to face the fight by stamping their feet on the ground for a change.

Those who mistook this for “sponsored public disturb” are either myopic or insincere and obviously oblivious of the times. The menace of SARS and their unleashed terror on society is pitiably palpable to any conscientious lover of freedom and humanity. It is time to shout out; to shout hoarse on the loudest vocal cords. Let the killings stop, the killers punished and the victims adequately compensated.

So far so good. The Inspector General of police and the government of the day are not grandstanding. They seems to be playing ball for now. But on whose behest was the pockets of resistance to the protest orchestrated? What happened in Berger Junction, Abuja was vexatious.

Those who are asking why the protest still persists even after the government has verbally disband the embattled killer unit, SARS, do not understand the sociology of the struggle. Pent up anger and deep seethed animosity must be allowed to be ventilated. You cannot beat a child and still determine when he should stop his crying.

Nobody should read any ulterior motive to the protest. We have a case in point and that is the mistreatment of Nigerians by the ill-fated SARS, the very pivot on which the protest rotates. Any other adduced and assumed reason becomes a matter of conjecture.

Those who are crying fow that the matters may escalate to the breakdown of law and order are suspect. When last in Nigeria have we had such a successful, peaceful, widespread and evenly coordinated protest like this present one?

The youth have come to understand that they can never win against the establishment using methods that are statutorily exclusive to their tormentors. They’re educated enough to know that non violent change is possible.

This is the reason why they’re on the street, armed with nothing but their vocal prowess. We must listen to them. We must do their bidding and earn their trust. If we say they’re the leaders of tomorrow, then let’s allow them to determine their tomorrow.

JP CLARK: You Will Murder The Play

0

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) – By AZUA ALONU:

When we told our English teacher, we were going to put on stage J.P Clark’s Play. Ozidi, he said: You will murder the play. Our dramatic society in our estimation very virile, we were teenagers in our Baptist Secondary School and the level of enthusiasm in our rehearsals was top-notch. No play we could not stage. We were at the verge of completing one play called “Dinner for promotion” in which our English teacher gave us an excellent mark when this Ozidi love caught fire in our bones. We thought we will do a nice job and was looking forward to getting our principal and the teachers to watch us when our English teacher resigned and joined the Nigeria National Shipping line.

We continued amateurishly with our rehearsals. The English teacher that replaced him sneered at our ambitions and did not get close to our rehearsal venue. Then, our resigned English teacher wrote me a letter: How is your dramatic society. How is the Ozidi rehearsal going on. I hope J.P Clark does not sue you for murdering his play. By the time the letter came, we had murdered the play in our rehearsal and left the corpse unburied. I quickly replied that we had discontinued. But I still remember this line after forty years of that dramatic fiasco, it was one of Ozidi’s greetings: Man of Twenty toes/ and Twenty fingers, I greet you, then.

We actually did not know much of his other plays except the three plays: Songs of a goat, the Masquerade and the raft. It was in the university that the rich body of J.P Clark’s poetry was exposed to us after we have read Abiku, the most popular of his poems in our secondary school. Most people know him as a poet and he continued to write poetry until his final departure. There were beautiful poems of his that were not necessarily in the public. I was reading Dr. Newton Jibuno’s Me, My Desert and I, A journey, A mission, A life and I encountered this beautiful poem titled: One Man and the Desert (for newton Jibuno).

I met a man
In a glass and marble place
At his gates, waves and dunes
Of an ocean all set to move in
Trucked by satellite
He crossed the sahara
In five days by sunlight
And always ahead of him
Day and night
Over a lunar landscape
At full stretch for a syllable
An albatross flew
Beating waves and dunes
Away from his jeep and tent.

This poem and the poems that talked about his death and “will” ard many private poems that will come out of the crevices of his creative armory have not been extinguished by death. For as we remember him and celebrate him, the spirit of his creativity will be with us. When we recite his poems, we will lit a huge light, the flames flourish.
J.P Clark’s poetry is the channel in his culture, life and vision flow. He was a poet in the market place and his poetry-songs are the ones that awaken in us the spirit of dance. It was this dance that I went with my friend and poet, the secretary of Delta Literary Forum, Albert Ograka to Kiagbodo, J.P. Clark’s home town for one of his birthdays to dance and sing his poetry but the programme became too choked, they murdered our poems. We left the venue happy because there were others who did justice to the occasion. We will not have any alibi for not organizing a festival of his poems when next we do some of our events in Asaba. At that time we will write some of his children to tell of the endless stories he told them full of colourful humor, myth and poetry. And then we will retaliate with his poem Olokun.

I love to pass my fingers
(As tide thro weeds of the sea
And wind the tall fern-fronts)
Thro the stands of your hair
Dark as night that screen the naked moon

J.P. Clark did not concern himself with his arts alone. He intervened in the politics of our country. I cannot forget the trip of himself, Soyinka and Achebe to see General Ibrahim Babangida our head of state when Manman Vatsa, a fellow poet and soldier was implicated in a coup and how their plea fell on deaf ears. Of course he talked about the crisis in the Niger Delta and I remember his article “Armistice” in which he offered solution to the deep crisis in the Niger Delta. He continued to offer opinion both publicly and privately on the way our nation should go.
Even though he continued to offer opinion and continued to write until he left this our mortal world, his rewards in monetary terms was not as big and appreciable. And like most writers in this part of the world, it is not to be said of him that he was rich. I think he was comfortable.

J.P. Clark achieved much in literary success and has become a model for most young people.
And we do know that he asked the question that has been bothering the minds of young people in the poem “ Where do they all go” He was asking of where the politicians will go when they leave office. Are they going to go to board rooms or thrones termites dispute.

J.P. Clark did not talk of life after this earth. Certainly, he would not go to the throne that termites dispute. Would he go to the Palace angels’ guard. Maybe he will be reading his poem “Abiku” among children in heaven who come to earth and return to heaven several seasons. Let us end this piece with this now popular poem “ My Last Testament” from his book Full Tide (Collected Poems) Page 385.

This is to my family
Do not take me to a mortuary,
Do not take me to a church,
Whether I die in or out of town,
But take me home to my own, and
To lines and tunes, tested on the waves
Of time, let me lie in my place
On the Kiagbodo River.

If Moslems do it in a day,
You certainly can do it in three,
Avoiding blood and waste,
And whatever you do after,
My three daughters and my son
By the only wife I have,
Do not fight over anything
I may be pleased to leave behind
