Being a Lecture delivered by Bashorun Askia Ogieh (KSJI) JP on Wed 13th March, 2024 at Annunciation Parish, Ogunu, Warri, as part of the activities of the Catholic Church Laity week celebration
Perhaps, due to the complexities and demands of politics, instances of bad governance and the failure of governments to adequately meet the needs of the people, there have been discontent, frustration, anger and distrust, leading to apathy towards participation in political processes. As for fact, and understandably, the Christian faithful is sometimes particularly challenged when they witness certain undignifying political conducts with unsavoury outcomes, which do not conform with their religious conscience, especially Catholic principles and values. This therefore raises the question if we, as Christians and Catholics, especially the Lay Faithful, should participate in politics and political processes. It is thus a privilege and honour for me to speak to this agitation which confronts the minds of millions, in fact billions, of my brethren Lay Faithfuls across the globe. There are three critical questions in the issue: First is: Should the Lay Faithful participate in politics and political processes? If yes, the second is: Why should they participate? And the third is: How should they participate? In attempting the answers, I shall rely on the scriptures, the doctrine and catechism of the Catholic Church, the directives of the Pontifical Council, the resolutions of the Conference of Bishops and the positions of various Synods.
For us Catholics, the first question has been answered in the affirmative by the Pontifical Council. Clearly, we should participate in politics and the political processes of our society, nation, state and community. The second and third questions have also been answered by the Doctrinal Note directed to the Bishops of the Catholic Church, and especially to Catholic politicians and all Lay Faithful. Interestingly, their positions and directives are in conformity with the scriptures, the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ and the early Apostles. Writing on “Religion, Synodality And Civic Responsibility For A Better Nigeria,” Bro (Dr) Matthew Atonko Ksm, National Leader of the Christian Business Men Network, Abuja Province, and Ukwueze Emmanuel Okeke JP, National Coordinator of the Catholic Social Forum of Nigeria, were emphatic that, “the Catholic Church calls for the participation of the Lay Faithful in political activities, grounded in civility and guided by moral principles to shape a more just and peaceful world.” To understand this responsibility, the beginning point is for us to understand that government is ordained by God and established in the Bible. In Romans 13, we are told that, “all authorities come from God, and those in position of authority have been placed there by God…The authorities are God’s servants, sent for your good… They are God’s servants sent for the very purpose of punishing those who do what is wrong.” There are two key things here: “Sent for your good,” and “to punish those who do wrong.”
The point is that there is always need for government. As different individuals with different goals and different tendencies, we cannot run a society without control. That will amount to a state of anarchy. The purpose of government, therefore, is to provide general points of consensus to regulate individual and group conducts for our common good. These are done through laws, rules, regulations, policies, programmes, projects and other activities that will ensure our peaceful co-existence, our common welfare and progress. I dare say that aside doctrines, the laws of government are not so much different from our scriptural laws – the ten commandments and the principles and rules of justice, and so on. The very establishment of government itself was manifest in Exodus 18 when Jethro, Moses’ father in-law, told him as follows: “And thou shall teach them ordinances and laws, and shall shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work they must do. “Moreover, thou shalt provide out of all the people, able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness, and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, rulers of tens. “And let them judge the people at all seasons; and it shall be that every great matter, they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter, they shall judge. So shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.
“If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall go to their places in peace.” A simple reading of this scripture shows not only the basis of government, but also the character of those who are to be called to leadership as well as the structure of government. Judging or governing “in thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens,” translates to our governmental tier system which is divided into national, provincial, states, local governments, wards and units, which are also in turn structured into executive, legislative and judiciary arms. Thus, we all called to function at different levels, according to our reach, and this should assure us not only that it is approved of God for us to play a part in governance but that we have a divine responsibility to do so. Accordingly, the Catholic Church believes that “democracy cannot be productive without the active, responsible and generous involvement of everyone in different ways, forms and levels, and therefore enjoins us “never to relinguish our participation in public life.” Be it in the economic, social, legislative, administrative or cultural areas, everyone is to contribute in the development of solutions towards achieving the common good and progress of society. Indeed, as a faith and religious organization, the Catholic Church has been in the forefront of driving the progress of societies through the years, with huge and ubiquitous commitments and investments in education, health, science, medicine, justice, sports, you name it.
We have been behind some of the great educational, health and multi-facetted professional institutions that have uplifted world civilization, the dignity of man and the progress of societies. That being so, why should we therefore be shy or bow to any challenges such as would make us shirk our responsibility in playing roles in the decision making and policy or programmes implementation processes in the society or community in which we are born or live? This is a no-brainer, because in Jeremiah 29:7, God enjoined us to: “Work for the peace and prosperity of the city where I sent you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, for its welfare will determine your welfare.” Note the key phrases: “Work for” and “pray for.” This injunction completely erases any tendency for apathy, for if we all abstain from the responsibility of governance, how then can the state be governed? As earlier noted, participation in the political process, nation building and national progress is in different ways, forms and levels. It starts with observing civic responsibilities, obeying the laws of the land and meeting our obligations to the state. This includes fulfilling all citizenship protocols like the various mandatory biometric registrations, being counted in census, voting during elections, obeying traffic and environmental regulations, and paying our taxes, amongst others. Jesus gave this injunction when he said, “Render unto Caesar the things that are Ceasar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s.
He acted and exemplified his command by instructing Simon Peter to go cast a hook in the sea, open the mouth of the fish that first comes and use the money found in it to “pay your tax and my tax.” Matt 17:27 If Jesus fulfilled his civic obligations, what about us, his children and followers? Aside the fulfilment of civic duties, we are all called to participate in the political and governance processes in various other higher capacities. Thus we can aspire to be board members, councillors, local government chairmen, State and National Assembly members, Governors, Presidents and such other offices in political service that support the delivery of governance. The worry for some people, however, is in the perception of politics as dirty and lacking in moral values and ethical codes. They therefore think it is a contradiction to get involved, in the fear or confusion that such involvement negates or will compromise their Christian conscience and values. Some even feel that because we are looking ahead to the eternal city, where there is perfection, there is no need to get involved in the affairs of the world but, as stated by Akonto, “it is a mistake to think that, because we have here no lasting city, but seek the city which is to come, we are entitled to shirk our earthly responsibilities.” This brings us to the question of how we should participate. This question has also been answered by our Lord Jesus Christ in John 17:15, when he prayed God not to take us out of the world, but to keep us from evil, sanctifying us through the truth. Admonishing us about our engagement in secular affairs, he said: “You are the salt of the earth…You are the light of the world. A city that is set in a hill cannot
be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your father in heaven. (Matthew 5:13-16) The import of this is that we are to bring our religious principles and moral values into our engagement in politics, because, as Proverb 29: 2 says, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice, but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.” Can we therefore abstain from participation in politics and governance, so as to leave our society to the rule of the wicked? My answer is: God forbid. For why should we, having the knowledge and skills to deliver our people from poverty, to bring justice to the poor, to provide sustainable welfare for the needy and to advance the cause of the well being of our society, as imbued us by the grace of God, fail or refuse to so aplly ourselves? Some people may argue that the strongholds of negative politics are so deeply and strongly entrenched that any efforts to infuse Christian principles and moral values may just be like pouring water on the duck, but being children of faith, we should believe, as our Lord assured us, that “when the light comes, the darkness disappears.” As the Bro Akonto put it, “by faith, we are bound all the more to fulfill these responsibilities according to the vocation of each – in human, domestic, professional, scientific and technical areas – with religious values, (being that) all things are ordained to the glory of God.” If we doubt this, where then is our faith?
But, how should we participate? What are the principles and values that we should take into the political process? The Catholic Church believes that there is a convergence between religion and moral politics, which is in establishing and promoting the basic norms, values and virtues that define good governance, the cornerstone of national progress and citizens welfare. According to the 2nd Vatican Council and the Pontifical Council for the Laity, the first is Civility, which requires us to treat others with courtesy and consideration, under all circumstances, no matter our different religions, ethnicity, gender, age or political association. Civility brings with it sincerity, simplicity, sympathy, love, justice, kindness, honesty, tolerance, Godliness, courage, discipline, creativity, self reliance, determination, dedication to work, upholding of law and order and peacefulness. These are the very expressions of the fruits of the spirit, and we have been told that any tree that does not bear good fruits shall be cut down. These fruits which derive from our Christian and Catholic values eliminate resentment and breed positive relationships, understanding, empathy, better communication, peaceful co-existence, social stability, mutual cooperation and more productive working environment. We must also recognise that civil and political rights as well as allocation of public resources and services are not dependent on citizens’ political persuasions. We must therefore be fair to all persons in our judgements and actions.
As the scripture put it in Leviticus 19: 15: “Do not twist justice in legal matters by favouring the poor or being partial to the rich and powerful. Always judge people fairly.” This should apply also to our policy decisions, projects designs and programmes implementation. Psalm 82 enjoins us to: “Give justice to the poor and orphans; uphold the rights of the oppressed and the destitute. Rescue the poor and helpless; deliver them from the grasp of evil people.” If we don’t come forward to do these as Catholics, what then is our purpose? Also very crucial is the need for us to ensure the legality of government actions, the rationality of policies and decisions, sense of responsibility in conduct, the strengthening of commitment to work, the development of responsiveness, safeguard of the spirit of justice, transparency and integrity, protection of national interest, and the facilitation of individual and organizational goals. We must acknowledge that democracy denotes the diversity of opinions and perspectives for which we must seek and promote dialogue, compromise and consensus for the realization of the common good. We must also discern the content of political issues, positions of candidates, political parties and platforms to ensure that our concurrence and alliances are in tune with good conscience and for the common good. The Pontifical Council is of the view that these are attainable if we apply our religious and moral principles in our participation in the political process.
Arising from all these, my conclusion is simple. We should participate in politics and political processes. We have a responsibility to do so in view of the need for all hands on deck to drive the progress of our society, and we should do so by sticking to our Catholic values, moral principles and ethical codes.

Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) has urged Nigerians especially muslim faithful to use the period of the holy month of Ramadan to pray for God’s guidance for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, state governors, ministers and other political leaders in the country.

He said the month of Ramadan is unique in the Islamic calender when the holy quran was revealed. “It is indeed a period that offers us the opportunity for forgiveness, abundant blessings and reward for good deeds. The United Nations has strongly condemned the reported abduction of internally displaced persons (IDPs), many of them women, boys and girls, in Ngala Local Government Area of Borno State.
In a statement on Wednesday, UN lamented that while the exact number of people abducted remains unknown, but it is estimated at over 200 people.
The statement by the Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr. Mohammed Malick Fall read that: “On 29 February, members of a non-state armed group (NSAG) allegedly abducted the IDPs who had reportedly ventured beyond the safety of the trenches surrounding Ngala – from the ISS, Zulum, Kaigama, and Arabic IDP camps – in search of firewood. While an unspecified number of older women and children under 10 have reportedly been released, scores of IDPs remain unaccounted for, according to protection partners.
“I stand in solidarity with the families of all those abducted, especially children, and their communities and urge those who have abducted them to release them without harm.
“On behalf of the United Nations, I remind all parties to the conflict to adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian law to protect civilians from harm.
“In addition, I urge authorities and other partners to provide more livelihood opportunities for IDPs in camps in Borno State, alongside ongoing efforts for lasting solutions, to reduce the risks of insecurity and violence faced by IDPs.”
He added that: “More than two million people in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe (BAY) states have fled to garrison towns where they have few, if any, livelihood options. Those who venture beyond the protective trenches surrounding these towns to forage or farm do so at great peril, with killings, abductions, forced recruitment and sexual and gender-based violence (GBV) rampant.
“Two days to the commemoration of International Women’s Day, this incident is a stark reminder that women and girls are among those most affected by conflict.
“The crisis in the BAY states is disproportionately affecting women, boys and girls. There is a high prevalence of GBV against women and adolescent girls, while boys are targeted for recruitment by NSAGs.”

Commending Tompolo on the success he recorded in curbing the activities of oil thieves in his area of operations, Solomon noted that since he stands out among all the organisations involved in monitoring activities on the extraction and export of crude oil, his modus operandi should be adopted as the standard operational procedure by all the agencies and organisations involved in combating crude oil theft.

“I want to commend Chief Ekpemupolo on the successes recorded by his organisation that earned him a special recognition by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ). For a long time, the impression had been created that oil theft cannot be curbed. But Tompolo, through his patriotic commitment to the assignment, has shown that it can be done.
“He has shown that despite the allure of blood oil, there are people that are genuinely committed to saving the economy from collapse. Crude oil still remains the mainstay of Nigeria’s economy and accounts for more than 90 percent of our foreign exchange earnings. The continuous bleeding of this artery of the nation’s economy is a serious challenge to our collective well being. That Tompolo is conscientiously restoring sanity to the industry will have a calming effect on the economy”, Solomon stated in a statement issued in Asaba.
The NUJ conferred Internal Security Meritorious Award on Tompolo in appreciation of the accomplishments his organisation, Tantita Security Services. At the award ceremony weekend, president of the NUJ, Chris Isiguzo, lauded Tompolo’s contributions to internal security, particularly in the Niger Delta region.
He noted that the awardee had substantially helped the country to address the issue of crude oil theft which according to him, had over time, occupied the national life of Nigerians. Isiguzo said the issues of insecurity and economic sabotage in the country have been worrisome and of major concern to Nigerians.
Recall that the Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF), also inducted High Chief Government Ekpomupolo aka Tompolo into the DOPF Niger Delta Media Hall of Fame based on his uncommon struggles and determinations towards the liberation of the Niger Delta Region from economic and environmental degradation, political and social marginalization, and stagnation.

President Bola Tinubu has been advised not to merge the Nigerian Army University with the Nigerian Defence Academy as part of the implementation of Steve Oronsaye report.
The advice was given by the Olowu of Kuta, HRM Oba Hameed Adekunle Makama, Tegbosun III, in a statement on Tuesday.
The monarch in a statement issued by his media office, said Nigerian Army University, Biu, unlike the Nigerian Defence Academy, Is a full fledged federal university like other federal universities in the country, and offers various courses, and not specialised university which the NDA is.
He added that the Nigerian Army University was established by the Act of Parliament and cannot be reversed without going back to the National Assembly to repeal the act that set it up, noting that merging NAUB with NDA means the federal government is ready to merge every federal university created by the act of parliament.
Oba Makama also reminded President Tinubu that Nigerian Army University Biu was set up to cater for the multitude of students in search of university education in the north east axis, adding that merging it with the NDA will reduce it to an institution where military personnel are trained.
Oba Makama, however, commended President Tinubu for the political will to implement a far-reaching civil service reform that was initiated twelve years ago so as to cut the over bloated costs of governance
He said: “I believe the mixed up should not have arisen if proper wide consultation is made before advising Mr. President on inclusion of NUAB because Army University is not even in existence during the Orosanye panel.”
A total of 832 artisans, mostly orphaned as a result of the over a decade long Boko Haram insurgency, have graduated from the Borno State Enterprise Institute.
The event was presided over by the Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum on Tuesday at the Muna Vocational Enterprise Institute, along the Dikwa-Gamboru highway in Jere Local Government Area.
The trainees were selected from across the 27 local government areas of Borno State and have undergone training in 14 different trades; among them, 54 graduates specialised in aluminium fabrication, 29 in bricklaying, 48 in carpentry and 73 in information technology.
Others include 41 specialising in barbing, 46 in electrical work, 85 in leatherworks, 40 in plumbing, 72 in mechanics, 67 in solar technology, 148 in tailoring, 18 in tie and dye, 59 in welding and 53 in hairdressing.
In his address, Zulum said similar vocational institutes were established in Biu, Shani, Mafa and Magumeri. At the same time, revealing that plans are being made to revive vocational centres in Dikwa, Kaga, Ngala, Gajiram and Monguno.
The governor noted that the vocational institutes were established to address the challenges of youth unemployment and provide a means of livelihood to the people.
He said: “Upon assuming office, one of the primary objectives of my administration has been youth empowerment. We were acutely aware of the devastating impact of insurgency on our communities, leaving many without means of livelihood and leading to widespread unemployment, idleness, and despair. As the saying goes, “an idle mind is the devil’s workshop.”
The governor added that: “To address these challenges head-on, we established Vocational Enterprise Institutes, focusing on admitting vulnerable individuals, particularly those affected by the insurgency, to equip them with skills for sustainable livelihoods.”
Earlier in his address, the Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Engr Lawan Wakilbe said with funding allocated by Governor Zulum to the Technical and Vocational Enterprises, the output across all centres is targeted at over 4,000 artisans annually.
Meanwhile, the governor has approved the distribution of starter kits worth N847,277,297 to each of the 832 trained artisans in addition to another N349,440,000 one-year labour-intensive public work grant that will help them attain self-reliance.
Zulum also approved N41,600,000, with each 832 graduating artisans getting N50,000.
The governor equally approved automatic employment for the 64 best artisans who have achieved over 90%.
He said: “I understand from the remarks by the Hon. commissioner that 64 out of 832 have scored above 90% in both their specialised trades and the academic assessment. I, therefore, direct that all 64 of them should be employed and deployed to other vocational institutes across the state.”
Zulum also ordered the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation to process modalities for converting Muna Vocational Enterprises Institute to a Monotechnic with the capacity to award a National Diploma.
Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Retd) has expressed the appreciation of officers and men of the anti-narcotic agency to President Bola Tinubu for his continuous support for the on-going efforts to curb the scourge of substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking in the country.
Marwa stated this in response to questions from journalists while inspecting facilities at the NDLEA barracks, which is almost ready for commissioning in Yola, Adamawa state.
According to him: “We thank God for the project, we appreciate the continuity in governance. President Buhari appreciated the issues surrounding the security and welfare of staff. They seize, arrest, prosecute and deal with the criminals, yet the criminals come back to them because they live among them. But now we have the barracks for our personnel. President Buhari approved it and commenced it, and now President Tinubu has continued with same zeal and drive, so we appreciate this element of concern towards the NDLEA.”
While commending the standard and quality of work being done at the barracks, he said: “Consultants, contractors have done very well, good quality, well monitored, best materials and design as you can see, and we are 95% done. We hope that by the grace of Allah, before the middle of this year, we’ll fully launch this first phase. We are targeting initially the six geopolitical zones to have a barrack each, for equity and balance and in the succeeding years, we hope the succeeding government will continue in all the 36 state commands, FCT, and Special Area commands. Our officers are all excited and willing to do more, because this is a testament to the good work that the officers have been doing that yielded this project and they are willing to do even more.”
In his response to another question, the NDLEA boss said beyond arrests, seizures and prosecution of drug traffickers and barons to address supply reduction, the agency is equally committed to reducing the demand for illicit substances by combining forces with other stakeholders to raise awareness and address the root causes of substance abuse.
He noted that: “In 2018, a Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse (PACEDA) was set up, which I had the distinct honour of being the chairman. One of the major tasks that we had was to identify the root causes of drug abuse and trafficking and make recommendations which we did. In the process, we found that poverty is one of the key predisposing factors of drug use in all societies. It is important to note that it is not only Nigeria that has this problem, the whole world is facing it. So, in pursuing temporary relief, some people get into drugs.
“For this reason, I know for a fact that the president is determined to pull Nigerians out of poverty. And for the NDLEA and other institutions and stakeholders like the ministry of health, NAFDAC, etc, we are all combining efforts in drug demand reduction.”
He said the war against drug abuse is an all-encompassing one, which goes beyond the responsibility of only NDLEA. “The media are in the forefront, the church is in the forefront, community leaders, Imams, clerics, educators, NGOs, traditional institutions, women and youth organizations; we all must collaborate with security agencies to stamp out drug abuse from this country.”
Marwa hinted that in a matter of days he will be briefing the nation about a major seizure and some arrests made as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle drug cartels still operating between Nigeria and other countries in Africa, Europe and America.

With 211 votes, the ebullient Pastor secured the NNPP ticket in a tense exercise held in Benin on Friday.
Dr Azemhe’s declaration as the winner by the primary election committee which has the former Ogun state NNPP Governorship candidate, Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo as secretary, brought jubilation that resonated across the state.

He is the Regional Pastor of Omega Fire Ministry South-South Region and hails from Okpekpe, Etsako-East in the Edo North senatorial zone.
Delta State Commissioner for Primary Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibogwu, has commended the National Examinations Council (NECO) for recognizing and rewarding exceptional performances in their Examinations , especially in their National Common Entrance Examination.
Dr. Ashibogwu gave the commendation in Asaba during the NECO Productivity Award presentation to Master Bokare Lemuel Ogheneyoborue of King’s Kiddies Nursery and Primary School, Warri who emerged overall best in the country in the male category of the 2023 Entrance Examination into Federal Government Colleges that was conducted by NECO and the Proprietress of the school, Mrs. Dorcas Enasara Adjetey .
The award is from the National Examinations Council.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary in charge of Ministries of Primary and Secondary Education, Mr. Augustine Oghoro, the Commissioner said that the award was aimed at boosting morale and improve the productivity in terms of students’ performances arising from teaching, administration, research and innovations.
Dr. Ashibogwu stated that the award was intended to inspire healthy competitions and continuous improvement in the school setting, adding that the partnership between the Examination body and the State Government was to ensure that the public acknowledged quality performance would promote healthy competition among students and learners.
He said that as an Examination body, NECO had continually maintained high ethical standard in all ramifications and congratulated the awardees for their outstanding performance and for making the state proud.
He urged schools and learners across the state to emulate the academic excellence of the two pupils, whose performances in the entrance examination had been considered to be the best , a feat that earned their various schools award.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Director of Examinations in Ministries of Primary and Secondary Education, Mrs. Clementina Ufoma Ojumah noted that the award was an indication that the huge investment in the education sector by the State Government was yielding tremendous results and called on other well meaning organizations to emulate the gesture carried out by NECO.

The Arise News TV morning show of Wednesday, February 21, 2024, like others before it, is a butchers table where thoroughbred professionals are supposed to be speaking to Nigerians on matters that affect them. However, while a professional like Dr. Reuben Abati would tailor his responses to journalistic professionalism, his colleague in the studio (speaking of TV host Rufai Oseni) would always react to issues as one seeking to take a pound of flesh on persons he may not have agreed with in an exchange of denomination on issues so worrying to all Nigerians.
Nigerians are angry. Yes, we all deserve better deals from our leaders. But do we really love the truth? If we do as many who are chanting in the streets blaming the Tinubu Administration for the sins of the past regime or what he did or did not do as president, we must understand that the trouble we faced today is the result of the corruption we overlooked or waved with the hand when it was happening.
The unrepentant evil doers in the political circles, which continued to dictate to leaders in power, have for all reasons to be blamed for Nigeria’s current crash in the naira free fall, skyrocketing prices of food items as well as building materials, which shoot to unimaginable heights within weeks of the new year, if we take it closer. Most of them are not in the corridors of power, but they are those steering the economy, banditry, and other terrorism acts from their sitting positions across the country.
These ungrateful citizens, who pile up food and other needs in the name of hoarding, are living among the people and are joining in blaming the government when they actually know that they are the ones to blame for sabotaging the nation.
The Vice President Kashim Shettima, while commenting on an occasion recently, said that some trucks loaded with food items were arrested for trying to smuggle out food to other countries while their countrymen were in need of such commodities. Many Nigerians who are on top of their voices are not blaming these evil men for their woes; instead, they form alliances and go to the streets to satisfy their paymasters, who are bent on making the country ungovernable.
When I saw some of these paid scripts and rented voices in Abuja on Tuesday, I realized that the real issue in Nigeria is not about fighting for the masses who cannot afford a meal. It was not about fighting for hundreds and thousands whose voices ebb as would a lantern go out of fuel. But it was a game stage played by individuals who lack integrity and are actively trying to sabotage President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s initiatives to improve the Nigerian economy. They are peching everywhere, from the dollar rate to food items in the market.
These forces are hell-bent on undermining our nation, and rather than supporting the government to fight these evil men, Nigerians, blinded by false witnesses, have turned their blond eyes to reality and focused their attention and energy on helping these evil men achieve their purpose. Nigerians ought to start looking inward. We must begin to tell these individuals to stop their evil doings in the interest of our nation. This is the time for us to coalesce into a singular entity, and indeed, as Vice President Kashim Shettima has said, we have to make this country work. We have to move beyond politics.
We have to understand that we are now in the face of governance. Persons like Rufai Oseni of Arise TV should not wake up to a morning show as a TV host on the wrong side of the bed with such rage in speech and countenance. I have studied mass communication, and that is not what we have been taught in the classroom.
Rufai Oseni’s reactions to Vice President Kashim Shettima put him in a different class of journalism. But sitting with professionals like Dr. Reuben Abati, he needs to learn journalism again. I think he needed to replay the Wednesday morning show and watch it for himself again and make a comparison of his reactions to the responses given by Dr. Reuben Abati on Shettima’s statemanship comments, standing as one and not as the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
If you know Kashim Shettima very well, you know when he is speaking from the heart and when he is playing politics with words. While Dr. Reuben Abati understands the pains of Shettima’s response to the hardships and actions of saboteurs, Rufai’s reactions betrayed his commitment to national interest, and I hope Arise TV could organize tutorials for such staff appearing on a national TV, whether as journalists or TV hosts, which I will recommend for Rufai Oseni to go for those lessons.
“It is so sad that some of our countrymen are still in political mode. They are the practitioners of violence, advocating that Nigeria should go the Lebanon way. But Nigeria is greater than any of us here. Nigeria will weather the storm.” Indeed, Vice President Kashim Shettima was right. These men are living with us; we all know them and know their moves. It is time to begin to look them in the eyes and tell them the neckade truth. The Tinubu and Shettima administrations are not sleeping over the many issues confronting the nation at this time. This government has been battling many fronts, some of which are living under our nose. We must fight them to release our country from the shackles of destruction by these saboteurs.
As of January 18, 2024, a bag of cement was selling for N5,500. Iron rod by 12 was selling for N4,600, and by 10, it was selling for N3,600. Cement is now going for N10,200, and the iron rod was selling for N9,700 and N8,700, respectively. This was barely one month from the known price in the market. The explanations being given by traders, marketers, and companies over the increase in their products were not realistic.
For example, I heard one of the executives of a cement company attribute the souring price to demand over short supply and also point at the price of diesel for production. But I ran my eyes over some level of development, at least in comparison to what I saw last year when the price of cement was under N6,000 to what is obtained now, and I could not convince myself to believe that demand was low last year in comparison to this year’s demand since the year itself is young and the first quarter of the year, as we know, is not time for such high demands of products like cement. So what are the true reasons?
Perhaps Arise TV should begin to think of calling these traders, marketers, and company owners to tell Nigerians in point blank why they are subjecting Nigerians to untold hardship and also give us what they think the government needs to do if they feel that the government is not doing enough so that Nigerians can know where the problem is coming from and stop the blame game or conducting and sponsoring protests to add salt to injury.
Some producers of cement have attributed their claims to a hike in the price of diesel, but still, was the price of diesel the same as it was last year and the year before? If these protesters want to help Nigerians overcome the piling problems, why can’t they show support by approaching these conglomerates about the changes that come to us in a tsunami-style manner? No matter how situations may turn with government handlings, it cannot turn overnight as we are experiencing unless there are attempts to bring the government to it’s knees by certain elements and that is what the VP saw.
If Rufai Oseni could react to Shettima’s comment as he did on the morning show today, I would ask where he left his professionalism. If the Arise TV morning show is a place of butchering ideas, comments, and statements made by politicians or persons of profiling, in journalism, I believe we still hold to the creed of respecting people’s opinions and never allowing our own opinions about people to becloud our reasonings.
Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum has unveiled a unified curriculum for Islamic schools aimed at countering violent extremist ideologies and helping avert young people from being radicalised by terrorist groups.
At the event held at the council chamber of the Government House on Tuesday, Zulum said “Our Islamic schools have been operating without a unified curriculum for at least three to four decades and that is a matter of great concern to all of us. The so-called Boko Haram insurgency was started as a result of some misleading preaching, therefore it is imperative for us to devise a way to avert such in future.”
Zulum assured that his administration will ensure that all Islamic schools have strictly adhered to implementing their activities based on the new unified curriculum.
He emphasized the importance of teaching and preaching following the authentic content of the holy books.
He said: “We are currently witnessing another development recently, we are concerned by the way some scholars preach. Therefore, the Government of Borno State will do everything possible to ensure that teaching and preaching comply with the proper content of the holy books.”
Zulum also noted that the new curriculum was prepared based on the policies of the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies which he said will qualify students from private Islamic schools to get admission to Universities and Colleges.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the Arabic and Tsangaya Education Board, Khalifah Sheikh Ali Abulfathi, said the curriculum which is based on the Maliki School of thought centred on the teaching of Arabic, Quran, Hadith, Tauhid and fight.
He added that the Board reviewed existing teaching methodologies and instructional materials used by the Islamiyya schools as part of efforts to give the knowledge and values needed.
Ali Abulfathi called on parents and other stakeholders to support the new curriculum to ensure that every child has access to quality Islamic education.
Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) has called on all tiers of government in Nigeria to take concrete and targeted steps to mainstream social justice into all processes, mechanisms and instruments of governance.
The organisation while alleging that President Bola Tinubu’s subsidy removal has had nothing to show, asked the present administration to copy the Gen. Sani Abacha’s Petroleum Trust Fund and President Goodluck Jonathan’s SURE-P created to soften the hardship of removal of fuel subsidy.
The call was made in commemoration of the World Day of Social Justice 2024 with theme: “”Bridging Gaps, Building Alliances.”
The CSJ, in a statement on Tuesday by its Lead Director, Eze Onyekpere said the theme indicates that there is no better time than now for the government to bridge the gap of increasing poverty, hunger and degraded living conditions occasioned by the rising cost of living.
Onyekpere also said: “This is also the time to bridge the inequality gap against the background of the ostentatious and opulent lifestyles of top level public servants and elected officials. While the average Nigerian has been subjected to misery, the ruling class revel in a competition to mismanage and abuse public resources.
“With increased resources available to the three tiers of government arising from the removal of fuel subsidy and floatation of the Naira, there was a public expectation under the Renewed Hope Agenda that these new resources would be invested for the public good in education, health, housing, roads and other infrastructure. Rather than investing the resources to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor and build a national alliance and consensus for development, the leaders have cornered all the resources for their personal gain as there is nothing to show for the increased resources available to the government.
“Promises of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu era had remained pipe dreams and none has been fulfilled.”
He noted that the Abacha presidency era had the Petroleum Trust Fund while the Goodluck Jonathan era had SURE-P for the investment of fuel subsidy removal gains, but lamented that: “The Bola Ahmed Tinubu presidency has nothing to show. Rather, we have witnessed a bloating of the cost of governance and frivolous expenditure.
“The three arms of government have not demonstrated any sense of patriotism to bridge the gap of injustice, inequality and poverty in Nigeria. On the part of the Judiciary, we have witnessed the brazen attempt of senior judges to install/appoint their relations by all means as judges of the various courts. The executive and legislature have refused to cut down the cost of governance and re-channel the bulk of the public resources to cushion the effects of poverty. It is alarming, that in the face of the current hardship plaguing the nation, the President still maintains a bloated retinue of staff with increased personnel cost, while the legislators went on a spending spree in the procurement of SUVs worth 160 million each for its members. The legislature also scandalously increased its budget. The government refuses to pay the promised wage award of N35,000 to civil servants whereas the minimum wage still remains a paltry N30,000.”
He said: “We call on the government to use this occasion to reflect on implementing life-saving measures that would bridge the gap of inequality experienced by 133 million multi dimensionally poor Nigerians. It is not too late for the Federal Government to review and course correct on its stringent policies such as the removal of fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira which has resulted in run-away inflation and high cost of living.”
Onyekpere added that: “Against the background of the foregoing, CSJ proffers the following recommendations: Bridge the gap of poverty by drastically reducing the cost of governance and redirect more public resources to meet the needs and welfare of the poor; The President should review the economic team and build alliances with competent citizens in all political affiliations who have proven capacity to proffer solutions that will reposition the economy; Social welfare programs should be created to benefit poor and vulnerable Nigerians who are currently grappling with the economic hardship plaguing the nation.
“Principal officers of the three arms of government should be rededicated to service delivery and effective implementation of mandates as well the tenets of social justice – the national interest above the self-interest.”

All International airports in Nigeria will now have 30 seconds biometric clearance gates in line with international standards and best practices.
The Federal Government installed the facilities for the Nigeria Immigration Service, (NIS), at all international airports in the country.
The biometric gates have the capacity to screen and clear a passenger within 30 seconds without any interface or contacts with Immigration personnel.
When inaugurated, it would provide seamless clearance services for passengers entering the country through any of the International airports.
Speaking to journalists after undertaking a tour of the biometric equipments installed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, and the Command and Control Centre at the NIS Headquarters on Monday, the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo said the 30 seconds biometric clearance gates would be ready in Lagos, Portharcourt, Kano, Abuja and Enugu by March.
He said Lagos would have 17 gates, Abuja 10, Portharcourt and Kano 5 each and Enugu 4.
Tunji-Ojo while stating that the facilities would be a game changer for effective and efficient management of international passengers in the country, noted that the Advanced Passenger Information System (APIS), and the Commandant and Control Centre facilities had been integrated not just for seamless entry and exit for passengers, but to add another layer to the nation’s National Security Architecture.
The Minister who was conducted round the facilities by Comptroller of Immigration in Charge of the Abuja International Airport, Alhaji Mohammed Adamu, said whatever is happening within the airports domains would be seen real time at Command and Control Centre to enable security agencies monitor persons of interest entering the country.
The Minister also said:” I am impressed by the levels and pace of works I have seen here today. The facilities are about 70 percent ready. This means our border control management system is on track. It also means that the Nigeria Immigration Service is ready to contribute its qouta to the National Security Architecture.
“The efficiency of the services provided by the NIS determine whatever we see in our security outlook as a nation. All these are being done in line with global best practices and standards and in consonance with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu to provide quality services to Nigerians.
“We have decided that the more the gates at the airports, the easier it would be for passengers to be cleared. And looking at the ones that have been tested, it is about 30 seconds for a passenger to clear, so I look at the solutions and the hardwares, and I think they are a top notch.
“I am happy with the quality of works and I am happy with the prospect of giving Nigerians the experience. And once it is completed Nigerians will no longer be at the mercy of Immigration officers whenever they arrive in the country.
“Once you check in you don’t need to have encounter with Immigration officers anymore except you are a person of interest. This facility is not just for you to pass at record time, no. It is also to secure the nation and add another layer to our National Security Architecture.
“If a person is a person of interest, he can easily be flagged. And this gives our Immigration support to be able to effectively do their jobs. “
Retired military officer and human rights lawyer, Col. Bello Fadile has responded to the circulating extracts from a book authored by Mrs. Farida Waziri, former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), regarding the 1995 alleged coup during the Gen. Sani Abacha regime.
In a statement issued on Monday, Fadile expressed concern over the misrepresentation of his role in what has been termed a phantom coup. He highlighted the excerpts from Waziri’s book, “Farida Waziri: One Step Ahead,” which he alleged portrayed some aspects of the events inaccurately, particularly regarding his involvement.
In the trending memoir, the former EFCC boss, allegedly recalled how former Chief of Army Staff, “General Abdulrahman Dambazau watched Obasanjo confidently rubbish the allegations leveled at him by Colonel Bello Fadile during the trial”.
But the ex-intelligence officer said even though Farida Waziri is someone she respects but she was relating the events from her own limited understanding of what transpired, adding that there were gaps in the book due to the “narrow perspectives with limited information”.
Fadile said that even though he has given some of these accounts at the Oputa Panel, he however, promised to tell his own side of the story and provide a more comprehensive account in his forthcoming book
Part of his statement read: “I find it necessary to address these inaccuracies, especially considering my own involvement in the events mentioned. The portrayal of my role in the alleged coup, as depicted in Waziri’s book, is far from accurate. Contrary to her claims, the truth can be found in the proceedings of the Oputa Panel, where I provided my testimony, despite attempts by the government at the time to manipulate the proceedings.
“The project I referred to as the “Back to Barracks Campaign deserves a fair and comprehensive exposé, which I intend to provide in my forthcoming book, “Nine Lives: The Bello Fadile Memoirs.”
“I want to assure the public and all concerned individuals that the genuine and complete truth will be revealed soon in my upcoming book.”
A powerful software developed by the Commonwealth Secretariat is being deployed in Nigeria to transform how the country manages its public debt portfolio of US $114.35 billion while enhancing transparency.
A statement on Monday by the Commonwealth Secretariat, said at the request of the Government of Nigeria, the Commonwealth Secretariat hosted a two-week training workshop for 15 Nigerian debt managers at its headquarters in London this month.
The statement added that during the workshop, participants received hands-on training on getting their debt databases ready for seamless migration to the new software, known as Commonwealth Meridian, and learned essential skills for recording, analysing, and managing various types of debt using the advanced tool.
The Acting High Commissioner of Nigeria to the United Kingdom, Dr Cyprian Heen, according to the statement, opened the workshop on 5 February 2024 and described the software as a crucial tool for sound debt management practices in developing countries.
He highlighted the importance of monitoring debt liabilities to prevent escalating debt costs and risks, which hinder governments from spending on projects essential for sustainable development.
Heen said: “Meridian allows borrowers to record their debt accurately and comprehensively across the full range of debt management transactions and operations.
“In turn, this facilitates accurate and timely debt service payment to creditors while allowing governments to monitor their liabilities.”
Launched in 2019, Meridian replaces its predecessor, the Commonwealth Secretariat: Debt Recording and Management System (CS-DRMS), which has helped Nigeria manage its public debt since the 1990s.
The upgraded software gives managers access to real-time debt data to monitor liabilities and make informed decisions, while ensuring national financing needs are met in time and at an acceptable level of risk.
Speaking at the workshop, Senior Director of the Commonwealth Secretariat’s Economic, Youth and Sustainable Development Directorate, Dr Ruth Kattumuri, said Nigeria is the Commonwealth’s key partner in supporting Africa’s development.
She emphasised Nigeria’s catalytic role in driving growth and sustainable development across the continent, leveraging its abundant natural resources and human capital.
Kattumuri reiterated the Commonwealth’s full support for Nigeria’s development efforts, including through the deployment of essential tools, such as Meridian.
One of the training participants, Director of the Debt Recording and Settlement Department of Nigeria’s Debt Management Office, Maraizu Nwankwo,, welcomed the training initiative.
He said: “Meridian would help to address the challenges encountered by our debt officials in the use of CS-DRMS and support the Debt Management Office in meeting the increasing demand for public debt data in various forms by the stakeholders and users.”
The upgraded software is offered to Commonwealth countries as part of the Commonwealth’s debt management programme, which includes advocacy and policy advice on formulating debt management strategies.
Currently, the software is in use in 39 Commonwealth countries
Nigerian government has called for immediate action to preserve life-giving ecosystems and to halt the human-induced extinction of wild species in West Africa subregion.
The Minister of State for Environment, Dr Iziaq Salako said there is the urgent need to change the biodiversity narrative of West Africa to arrest the dangerous treat of rising population of climate migrants and environmental displaced persons in the subregion.
Speaking at the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) coordination meeting in Abuja, Salako said: “It is clear that there is inequity in the ways countries are impacted by the biodiversity and climate crises. For us In West Africa, a lack of solutions means that our communities will become poorer, our food security jeopardized, and our rural populations forced to relocate as its already happening in many of our countries. It is a fact that the population of climate migrants and environmental displaced people is rising in our subregion.”
He told the stakeholders present at the meeting that they have an important mandate to produce a regional 30 by 30 implementation plan which seeks to secure the effective protection of at least 30% of the ECOWAS region to preserve our life-giving ecosystems and to halt immediately the human-induced extinction of wild species.
He noted that: “ECOWAS region is the only part of the world that is looking at its contribution to halting biodiversity loss through a regional lens, a template critical for global success and to securing nature for future generations. The healthier our region’s biodiversity is, the better it will be in withstanding future climate and biodiversity shocks and the more reslient to continue to deliver for the people.”
8.I want to trust that through your work in the coming days, ECOWAS will take the lead in ambition for biodiversity once again. We will work through the difficult technical aspects and conceive new paths forward, knowing that the eyes of the world are upon us. Our hard work to expand and strengthen our protected areas will serve not only as a sign of our commitment but also as a wake-up call to the rest of the world. If we can do this work here where we lack the resources of the Global North, what will be the excuse for foot dragging by any region?”
He noted that: “When we support one another, we all do better. Over half of global GDP relies on rich biodiversity and healthy ecosystems. Our investment in biodiversity conservation and the 30by30 agenda, is a long term investment in our economies and the future our different countries and indeed the world which will definitely yield return in multiple folds. We should be ready to secure the livelihoods of indigenous peoples and local communities who are the best protectors of the world’s richest biodiversity gifted to our sub-region. I strongly believe that we are ready to act together to protect the lands and oceans that provide our generous ecosystem services and give rise to our utterly unique environments.”
He urged Nigerians to be ready to secure the livelihoods of indigenous peoples and local communities who are the best protectors of the world’s richest biodiversity gifted to our sub-region.
He however assured that: “The President of my country President Bola Tinubu who is also the Chairman of ECOWAS is a committed environment advocate and climate hero who has prioritised sustainability as a core principle of his economic agenda.”
Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture of the ECOWAS Commission, Mrs Massandje Toure-Litse who was represented by the Head of the Environment and Climate Change Division of the ECOWAS, Mr Bernard Koffi said that it is expedient to ensure that the region is protected through a collective effort by member countries.
“ECOWAS countries have played a significant role in securing the adoption of global commitment to expand protected areas to 30 per cent of the planet by 2030.
“We have a shared responsibility to act by expanding and strengthening our protected areas because degraded ecosystem threatens the physical, economic and food security both of local communities and multinational businesses.”
Chinese President Xi Jinping has sent a congratulatory message to the 37th African Union (AU) summit.
Xi pointed out that the world today is undergoing profound changes unseen in a century, and the Global South represented by China and Africa is booming, which has a profound impact on the course of world history.
The AU brings African countries together to seek strength through unity, and promote integration as well as the building of free trade areas, Xi said.
The AU’s successful accession to the G20 has further enhanced Africa’s representation and lifted its voice in global governance, and China extends heartfelt congratulations on that, he added.
The Chinese president stressed that over the past year, China-Africa relations have grown deeper. As the China-Africa Leaders’ Dialogue was successfully held, the two sides decided to support each other in exploring their modernization paths and jointly create a favourable environment for realizing their development visions, Xi added.
The new session of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation is going to be held in 2024, Xi noted.
He said that he stands ready to work with leaders of African countries, with a focus on the benefits of people from both sides, to draw up a new blueprint for China-Africa cooperation and promote the joint building of a high-level China-Africa community with a shared future.
