A South African, Erasmus Jean – Pierre has been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja over attempt to smuggling 2.6 kilogrammes of methamphetamine via the Nigerian airport to the Middle East

A press statement on Sunday by the spokesman of the anti-narcotics agency, Femi Babafemi read that: “Attempt by a 29-year-old South African, Erasmus Jean – Pierre, to export 2.6 kilogrammes of methamphetamine concealed in his luggage to the Middle East through the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, NAIA Abuja on Wednesday 23rd August, 2023, was thwarted by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, who arrested him and recovered the illicit drug.”

He disclosed that the suspect was intercepted by NDLEA operatives during the outward clearance of passengers on Ethiopian Airlines flight ET 404 from Abuja to the Middle East via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, stating that a thorough search of his luggage led to the discovery of the whitish powdery illicit substance factory packed in different parts of the bag.

Babafemi said preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect arrived Lagos through Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire on Saturday 19th August, came to Abuja on Tuesday 22nd August, and took possession of the brown bag containing the drug consignment last Wednesday before heading to the Abuja airport for his flight out of Nigeria.

FG Promises to Stem Disaster Driven Poverty

The Federal Government has promised to take necessary steps to stem disaster driven poverty in the country.

The government equally promised to put in place legal framework to reward and punish citizens for environmental use.

Addressing members of Ogun State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) who paid him courtesy visit at the weekend in Abuja, the Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Ishaq Salako said Nigeria is currently facing a lot of environmental challenges from desertification, desert encroachment, land degradation, gully erosion, among others and that some something need to be done to address the decline.

He said: “I read it in the paper that if we do not take right actions in the country, in the next seven years or so, Nigeria would become one of the top ten nations in disaster driven poverty.”

He said to prevent this, not just the government but all Nigerians need to put in efforts at ensuring this never happened.

He said the NIPR has a duty to play in sensitizing the people on waste disposal and the need to pay for disposal of waste.

He said: “People do not believe you pay for waste disposal. We need to sensitize our people that if you do not pay for proper disposal of waste, it would eventually become a burden on the society.

“We also believe there is aspect of sustainable environment that must become obligatory civic duty just like you pay tax which is obligatory, sustainable environment and the way you use environment must become obligatory civic duty.

“It it not as if you would go to jail but you can be fined if you don’t do the right thing. You can also be rewarded if you put the environment to good use.”

He added that: “Our vision is to crave out this kind of encouragement using laws, using regulations to ensure that people take the issue of environment very seriously, and to know that it is their civic responsibility that the environment is well taken care of.”

Earlier, the chairperson of the Ogun State Chapter of the NIPR, Mrs. Oluwaseun Boye had promised to use the tools at the disposal of the association ti project the activities of the Ministry of Environment

CSJ Alleges Flawed Methodology in NBS Employment Report, Citing Discrepancies with Reality

The Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) has dismissed the new methodology employed by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in determining the level of unemployment and underemployment in Nigeria, describing it as “an act deliberately antithetical to Nigeria’s lived reality.”

CSJ’s statement was in response to the NBS’s release of its latest Nigeria Labour Force Statistics (NLFS) Report, which showed that unemployment in Nigeria fell from 5.3% in the fourth quarter of 2022 to 4.1% in the first quarter of 2023.

CSJ rejected the NBS’s findings, arguing that they are not supported by the increasing unemployment in Nigeria since the last report in 2020 which reported 33.3% unemployment rate in Nigeria.

It said since 2020, Nigeria’s economic challenges have increased with galloping inflation, factory closures, rural dwellers who have been prevented by insecurity from planting and harvesting and a public sector with a moratorium on new recruitments.

The Lead Director of CSJ, Eze Onyekpere said “the whole basis of a job report is to help the government to determine whether its plans, policies and laws geared at reducing unemployment are achieving the desired milestones, adding that: “What is the point of a job report that tells the government that more Nigerians are employed when it is a clear and notorious fact that unemployment is increasing?”

“The NBS is counting people who are working for at least one hour in a week or who are self-employed in low-productivity activities as ‘employed,’” said Onyekpere. “This is not an accurate reflection of the reality of the Nigerian labor market.”

He decried that the report t: “Simply to satisfy a fad, it is a waste of tax payers money to produce a report that adds no value to the Nigerian people and their economy,” stressing that CSJ believes that these statistics do not in any way reflect the prevailing economic challenges experienced by Nigerians, especially in recent times.

Before the latest report, Nigeria’s last unemployment data was released in the fourth quarter of 2020, leaving a substantial gap in our understanding of the employment situation. CSJ had previously emphasized the urgency for the NBS to provide up-to-date employment data for the years 2021 and 2022.

The statement said CSJ recognizes that a robust job report serves as a crucial tool for governmental planning and policy evaluation. However, the reported unemployment rate of 4.1% in the NLFS raises serious concerns about the relevance and accuracy of the methodology and the relevance of the findings to the lived experiences of Nigerians.

“This reported rate is incongruent with the economic challenges faced by a significant percentage of the population. “We call on the NBS to reconsider its methodology and ensure that it accurately captures the full spectrum of employment challenges faced by Nigerians. It is essential that job reports reflect the realities and provide an honest assessment of the economic landscape. Only through accurate data can the government develop effective strategies that deliver on its promises and address the pressing issues facing our nation,” Onyekpere said.

CSJ also called on the government to ignore the report, take steps to create more decent jobs and to improve the livelihoods of Nigerians.

FG, British High Commission Host Workshop on UK’s New Trading Scheme

The Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment in collaboration with the British High Commission hosted a one day workshop, on the UK’s new trading scheme.

The UK officially launched the Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS) in June 2023, which offers fast growing economies one of the most generous sets of trading preferences of any country in the world and demonstrates the UK’s commitment to building a long term, mutually beneficial relationship with Nigeria.

The DCTS means that a wide variety of products that aren’t widely produced in the UK, including food items – olive oil and tomatoes now benefit from lower or zero tariffs. The scheme sees tariff reductions on over 3000 products, thereby boosting non-oil exports in line with the Federal Government of Nigeria’s Zero Oil Plan.

Speaking during the workshop in Abuja on Tuesday, British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Gill Atkinson said: “As an independent trading nation, the UK is one of the foremost champions of free, fair and inclusive trade. The UK’s Developing Countries Trading Scheme harnesses the power of trade to help Nigeria and other emerging economies grow and will boost Nigeria’s non-oil exports in line with the Federal Government of Nigeria’s wider trade policy priorities and Zero Oil Plan.

“As the UK Government, we’re keen to maximise uptake of the DCTS. In this respect, I’m happy to see so many Ministries, agencies and departments gathered here today, so that we can explore underlying export challenges in more detail in order to improve the economic and social wellbeing of both our nations.”

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Evelyn Ngige on her part noted that: “Nigeria and UK enjoy excellent bilateral relations that translate into befitting and robust programmes such as the Nigeria- UK EDF Framework, Nigeria – UK Business Dialogue and the Proposed Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership that would strengthen the existing bilateral relations between the two countries.

“I wish to put on record our appreciation of the support of the Government of the United Kingdom and the commitment to improve bilateral relations between the two countries and for approving the new Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS)”. The scheme which was approved in June 2023 is aimed to engender trade between sixty-five (65) Developing Countries, including Nigeria.

“Nigeria’s economic aspirations have remained that of altering the structure of production and consumption patterns, diversifying the economic base and reducing dependence on oil, with the aim of putting the economy on a path of sustainable, all-inclusive and non-inflationary growth. It is my hope that the UK Government will also favourably consider the interests of Nigerian businesses operating in the UK, to foster a mutually beneficial relationship”.

The Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS) covers 65 countries globally, 37 of which are African, including Nigeria.

This DCTS, which came into force on 19 June, offers fast growing economies like Nigeria one of the most generous sets of trading preferences of any country in the world.

The DCTS also helps UK businesses access hundreds of products from Nigeria at lower prices, reducing costs for UK consumers, and increasing export opportunities for Nigerians.

NSCDC Underlines Importance of Protection of Critical Infrastructure in Abuja

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has underlined the importance of protection of all critical infrastructure within the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja

The newly deployed FCT Commandant of NSCDC, Olusola Odumosu said this while charging officers and men in his command to work assiduously in ensuring the protection of all critical infrastructure in the area.

Odumosu gave the charge while addressing all personnel, including Area Commanders and District Officers (DOs) across the Area councils in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

He said that his tenure of leadership under the NSCDC Commandant-General (CG), Dr Abubakar Audi is dedicated to ensuring results while actively carrying out the mandates of the Corps.

He said that the FCT Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike, had tasked the Corps alongside sister agencies in the territory to provide proper security and cleanse the city of criminals and miscreants.

Odumosu while frowning at the high rate of vandalism of street lights, theft of manhole covers, railings, railway sleepers amongst others, in the FCT, said: “It is high time we work together to put an end to these nefarious acts because these criminals are beginning to feel too comfortable in sabotaging the asset of the country.”

He further said that the Minister had charged the Corps to treat those involved in vandalizing manholes as “Armed robbers”.

Quoting Wike, Odumosu said: “The people who steal manhole covers, don’t see them as just people who steal but treat them as armed robbers, when you do that they will run away”.

He enjoined officers and men of the Corps to work tirelessly in ensuring that citizens and all critical infrastructure of the FCT were free of vandalism and other nefarious activities.

He said: “The Minister has promised to provide us with the necessary tools to work and we must give him good results because as your Commandant, I wouldn’t tolerate any excuses for failure.”

According to Odumosu, the newly inaugurated FCT Minister, who is renowned for hardwork, has said he is on a mission to revamp all infrastructural amenities in the FCT, hence, the need for the Corps to live up to expectations in ensuring adequate protection of these assets.

He noted that: “As a security organisation in-charge of the protection of critical infrastructure, the expectations of the Minister will be high and so we must not disappoint.

“Strategies, structures and infrastructural development will be put in place and so we can’t sit-back and watch all efforts go down the drain,” the Commandant said.

He however urged officers on the need for civility, professionalism, discipline, hard work, dedication and commitment while discharging their duties.

Odumosu further advised all personnel to renew their mindset, be motivated, maintain a positive attitude, adding that, the issues of security will no longer be business as usual in the FCT as the current administration is dedicated to enforcing reforms.

Bayelsa State: A one-Man Governorship Race

As the race for the governorship seat in Bayelsa State hots up, the baggage that the deputy governorship candidate carries may end as albatross on Chief Timipre Sylva

The race for the Creek Haven Government House in Yenagoa is hotting up. With incumbent Governor, Senator Douye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Minister of State for Petroleum Affairs, Chief Timipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are considered as the two formidable candidates for the most coveted seat. But recent happenings in the state has put Diri way ahead of his opponent who is having issues of opposition not only with his party, but also within his kitchen cabinet. The issues broke out into the open with his known loyalists coming out to oppose him in most devastating moves.

If it was designed to embarrassed Sylva, it was spectacularly effective and devasting. His son and political protégée, Mr. Israel Sunny-Goli, a former member of the House of Representatives had called the press to announce his verdict on the 11 November governorship election.

Sunny-Goli had told a crowded press conference that if the Bayelsa state governorship election was to hold today, Sylva will loose, and that Governor Douye Diri has proved his capability and capacity with unprecedented level of development that has taken place in the lost fours. He stressed that in the even of an election holding today Diri is mostly to take over 80 percent of the votes. It was a damning reality assessment of the political situation of the state.

The reason why the assessment was particularly damning was not only because Sunny-Goli was one of Sylva political sons, but someone who was known to face the reality of the politics in the state. He was a two-term member of the state House of Assembly and a two-term member of the Federal House of Representatives.

They say that in life, experience is the best teacher, and that we never stop learning; and that every experience we go through teaches us something new. But that not to say that every lesson learnt is of the life changing variety. But in the case of Sylva, it is.

Only in 2019, the election of Mr. David Lyon was overturned by a pronouncement of the Supreme Court because the deputy governorship candidate had issues with his names and certificate. Many people believed that the running mate to Lyon, Senator Degi, was nominated by Sylva and Sylva could not feign ignorance of the legal encumbrances against Degi. He was accused of not conducting due diligence on Degi before he was made the running mate to Lyon even when few persons saw the danger ahead and drew Sylva’s attention to the issue.

Yet, it was simply dismissed with a wave of the hand and everything was taken for granted. The Supreme Court simply nullified the election 24 hours before the swearing-in. Many of his party faithful still accused him of setting Lyon up to fail.

Today, Lyon is the biggest loser and he is still nursing the wound of having wasted his hard-earned resources in that election. Lyon has not been considered for any national appointment to comfort him.

Lightening, they say, never strikes at the same place twice, but for Sylva, the saying may not apply. The same situation seems to be repeating itself as Sylva who is the governorship candidate of the APC has in a most controversial move picked Mr. Joshua Maciver, who was accused of jailbreak as his running mate. This move, they insisted, is like setting himself to fail. A repeat of what happened to Lyon.

To most Bayelsans, Maciver was particularly remembered for his brutality against the people at the height of the militancy that rocked the Niger Delta between 1999 and 2007. This was why he was later arrested and sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment for murder.

To the people of the state, Maciver is ineligible to run for the November 11th, election going by records of his conviction and alleged jailbreak. A civil society group, Coalition for Social Justice and Equity Initiative (CSJEI) said that it has begun a process to approach the courts over the alleged ineligibility of the APC deputy governorship candidate. Lamenting that having a person of such criminal record in the highest level of government has security implication for the state and the nation.

The CSJEI contended that the risk and moral burden of such action will be too heavy for the state to bear at this most critical period of its history.

According to the Coalition, Maciver was allegedly convicted by a court of law and was sentenced to serve a 10 years jail term for murder and terrorism in a Kaduna state prison. Maciver, the group insisted, however, did not complete his sentence as he escaped from prison by allegedly pretending to be sick and needing treatment.

The group, through its Public Relations Officer, Ezra Areo, also claimed that despite being declared wanted by the Ministry of Interior and the decision of the administration of Late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua to offer Presidential pardon to militants during the militancy days in the Niger Delta, Joshua Maciver refused to embrace the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) fearing that the Amnesty programme was a clandestine ploy by the federal government to round him and others up.

Areo stated that “Maciver has over the years publicly claimed to have accepted the Amnesty programme, however, he never presented himself for proper documentation like the 30,000 Amnesty beneficiaries to the Presidential Amnesty team. Maciver was not alone in this reasoning as over 10,000 ex-agitators felt the same way.”

The group also accused Joshua Maciver of alleged forgery of Federal Government documents. He was alleged to have forged a Presidential Amnesty identification card purportedly issued in August 2009 and numbered BY/B4/007/09.

“It is common knowledge that sometimes on the 25th of June 2009 the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Late Musa Yar’adua issued AMNESTY PROCLAMATION wherein he granted amnesty to Niger-Delta Militants. It is also important to state that Amnesty is usually and generally, addressed to classes or even communities wherein it allows the government of a Nation or State to “forget” criminal acts, usually before prosecution has occurred. Amnesty has traditionally been used as a political tool of compromise and reunion following a war, which offences are usually politically inclined.”

“In the case Joshua Maciver, he was allegedly convicted by a competent court of jurisdiction sometime in 2006, for murder and terrorism and an alleged fugitive which conviction has no relation with militancy activity, therefore the amnesty proclamation of 2009 which cannot operate to serve as a pardon for the conviction of the offences committed by Joshua Maciver, which is not in any way associated with militant activities in the Niger-Delta.”

“At this juncture it is also imperative to understand the difference between amnesty and pardon. While AMNESTY is targeted towards group of people for forgetfulness of offences of political nature, PARDON seeks to set aside the punishment of an individual, for a criminal who has been TRIED AND CONVICTED. By the AMNESTY PROCLAMATION made on the 29th of June, 2009 same does not in any way seek to pardon or forget the conviction and sentencing of any individual howsoever called.”

The group insisted that this was the situation when the former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and APC governorship candidate, Timipre Sylva, presented him to the people as his Deputy Governorship candidate.

Meanwhile, the Presidential Amnesty office under Maj Gen Barry Tariye Ndiomu (rtd.) has disowned Joshua Maciver as not being a “beneficiary of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua pardon in 2009.”

Following the series of crises trailing the APC governorship candidate and his deputy and barely three months to the election, the likelihood of the APC candidate contesting the election with Maciver is dicey.

To most Bayelsans, Governor Douye Diri has no opposition and that if the election was held today, Governor Diri will win.

Chinese Envoy Says Nigeria Must Invest in Education, Food, Housing, Others to Eradicate Poverty

The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Cui Jianchun has said that for Nigeria to achieve the targeted poverty eradication, there must be conscious and systemic investment in education, food, housing, security and others.

Jianchun, who spoke in Abuja on Monday at the unveiling of the Hausa edition of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s book, ‘Up and Out of Poverty’ said there are many lessons from the book for Nigeria as both countries share so many similarities.

The envoy, while noting that the book was written in 1988 and contain the thoughts of the current president on how to eradicate poverty, revealed that it was the  book that the president used in eradicating extreme poverty between 2012 -2022.

He stressed that poverty revolves around two basic needs and three guarantees.

“For the basic needs, we have first, food and secondly, clothing. For the three guarantees, we have compulsory education, basic medical care, and safe housing,” he said.

He advised that: “Nigeria needs to fix the educational sector. The country has a lot of dropouts and we all know that without education, a country cannot move forward.

“Nigeria needs to fix the medical challenges it is facing to eradicate poverty.

“The measures that China took were to boost the economy. The economy is a decisive factor to eliminate poverty. Nigeria needs to rely on its strength, natural resources and create more jobs for its citizens.”

Also speaking at the unveiling of the book, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume said the book launch was apt, given the country’s mass poverty, where 80 million live below the poverty line especially in the Northern part of the country.

Akume, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Special Services Office, SGF, Aliyu Shinkafi, was therefore of the opinion that the Hausa version of the book will help Nigerians benefit from the growth and development of China.

He said: “This launch is timely and shows what both countries share in common.

“The book is translated in one of the three major languages so that our population can benefit from China. It is not by chance that the book was put together in Hausa because Nigeria has a population of 200 million about 80 million live below the poverty line especially in the North West and North East.”

The visiting Chinese Minister of Culture and Tourism, Hu Helping noted that: “The world is encountering a lot of challenges especially food insecurity and poverty, adding that: “Today, the launch of this book will help Nigerians understand and learn how China went up and out of poverty.”

WHD: NEMA Applauds Humanitarian Workers

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has applauded humanitarian workers in the country especially its staff who paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving others.

NEMA, in a statement by its Director General, Mustapha Ahmed to commemorate the 2023 World Humanitarian Day, also acknowledged those who have suffered injury, trauma, and tragic experiences while actively engaged in their roles.

According to the agency, it has documented instances of staff losing their lives and being kidnapped, underscoring the challenges faced by those who dedicate themselves to providing assistance in times of crisis.

The statement expressed his solidarity with the staff, State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs), Local Emergency Management Committees, LEMCs, and other humanitarian partners.

Ahmed, in the statement recognized their role in collectively improving the wellbeing of communities and humanity at large.
Ahmed further reinforced the importance of unwavering commitment to delivering life-saving assistance, echoing the sentiment of #NoMatterWhat.

He said: “As part of the World Humanitarian Day, we must take a pause to remember and celebrate NEMA humanitarian actors that have lost their lives and those that have suffered injury and trauma in the line of duty. It is on record that some NEMA staff have lost their lives and some kidnapped while many others have suffered tragic experiences while on active duty.”

He added that: “On this auspicious day, I want to express my solidarity with the staff of NEMA, State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs), Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs), the Nigeria Red Cross, the International Red Cross and the Red Crescent, the numerous NEMA partners, the UN system and community volunteers working in various hotspots in Nigeria and across the world.

“Despite all the difficulties and dangers faced as humanitarian workers, we must not give up on our commitment to deliver life-saving assistance to people in need, #NoMatterWhat.”

Naira Marley is Not Our Ambassador- NDLEA

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has revealed that its engagement with music star, Afeez Adeshina Fashola popularly known as Naira Marley is to encourage him to use his skills and platforms to put out content that will discourage millions of his followers and Nigerian youths from substance abuse, but insisted that the artiste has not been appointed an ambassador of the anti-drug agency.

The artiste had on Thursday 17th August 2023 led members of his team on a visit to the National Headquarters of the Agency in Abuja to express his preparedness to join the fight against drug abuse in the country.

According to a statement by the spokesman of the anti-narcotics agency, Femi Babafemi, the clarification became necessary following continued misrepresentation of the purpose of the visit especially on online platforms where some reports suggest that the British-Nigerian singer was appointed as an NDLEA Ambassador.

Babafemi said “this is misleading and absolute falsehood as the pictures of the visit and the short video containing Naira Marley’s advocacy message to his followers were properly captioned and shared by the agency without any suggestion of such appointment.”

He said “the decision by the agency to encourage Naira Marley with over seven million followers, half the population of those who abuse drugs in Nigeria, use his platform share anti-substance abuse messages as against using same to promote and glamourize drug abuse with the dire consequence of misleading millions of Nigerian youths into their peril, is to create a balance between our drug supply reduction and drug demand reduction efforts.”

He added that: “This is also in line with the agency’s whole society approach to the fight against drug abuse, and in tune with global best practice as well as the theme for this year’s World Drug Day; People First: Stop Stigma and Discrimination, Strengthen Prevention.

“When an artiste, who professes marijuana is good to seven million followers turns a new leaf after some serious counselling, do we reject him, turn our back to him and allow him continue in his old habit or we accept him, give him a chance so he can reach out to his followers to quit substance abuse.

“In other words, why should we take our anti-drug abuse advocacy messages to schools, churches, mosques, market places, motor parks, Nollywood, kannywood, traditional rulers, labour and the entertainment industry but when one of their members accepts to turn a new leaf, we turn our back to him? These are questions those opposed to Naira Marley’s needed change may have to ponder on.”

He noted that: “Indeed, no one is better suited to take the message against drug abuse to the Marlians than the head of the same movement. This is no time for mischief or cynicism but the right moment we all need to encourage the singer and hold him accountable to his public commitment against substance abuse in his video message to his followers in the overall interest of our youths.”

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum has appealed to Nigeria Customs Service to collaborate with his government to build business with neighbouring countries of Niger, Chad and Cameroon, with whom the state shares borders with.

The governor made the appeal while paying a visit on the Acting Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi at the Service’s headquarters in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

During the meeting, Zulum sought increased collaboration between Borno State Government and the Nigerian Customs Service to foster economic growth through enhanced trans-border trade with neighbouring countries of Cameroon, Chad and Niger Republics.

Zulum emphasised that a seamless trade and economic environment would not only benefit Borno State but also contribute to the nation’s economic prosperity.

He said: “As peace is gradually returning to Borno State, I want to express my readiness to work with Nigeria Customs Service to enhance the transportation of goods between Nigerian borders with Cameroon, Chad and Niger, which will in turn enhance the economy of not only the immediate communities but the entire Nigeria.”

The governor while congratulating the Ag. Comptroller-General, expressed gratitude to the leadership of Nigeria Customs Service for their support to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who are largely citizens of Borno State affected by the over a decade old insurgency.

He said: “Let me, first and foremost, congratulate you on your appointment as the Ag Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service; this vital organisation in the country. I want to also commend Nigeria Customs Service for uplifting the standards of living of the displaced communities in Borno and other parts of the Northeastern region.”

Responding, the CG gave assurance to the governor on his commitment to developing new measures to assist in re-establishing the full structure of cross-border trade in Borno.

He emphasised that the measure will boost the region’s economy and provide jobs for the people in Borno State.

The CG also sought an enhanced relationship with the host communities.

He said: “Moving forward, we will need your support to engage with members of the border communities in Borno, especially as the insurgency has been degraded. We will build on the good relationship that we have and leverage on it to re-establish a good relationship with Cameroon and, of course, the Southern part of Chad.”

During the visit, Zulum was accompanied by Borno State Commissioner of Budget and Planning, Dr. Babagana Mustapha.

NHRC Asks Well Meaning Nigerians to Join Humanitarian Train

As Nigeria joins the rest of the global community to commemorate the 2023 World Humanitarian Day (WHD), the Executive Secretary of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chief Tony Ojukwu has called on well-meaning Nigerians to join the humanitarian train by lending a helping hands to persons who are confronted with different forms of humanitarian crisis ranging from medical to shelter, hunger and malnutrition to lack of basic services.

Ojukwu stated this on the eve of the commemoration of WHD in Abuja. He called on Nigerians to reflect on the global challenges that communities around the world face, admonishing that it is imperative for us to unite in our efforts to address the critical humanitarian issues confronting us as a nation.

He noted that the recent removal of fuel subsidy has created untold hardship to majority of Nigerian especially the low-income earners, making them deserving of humanitarian assistance as they are no longer able to provide for some basic needs of life.

He said there is an urgent need to address the adverse consequences of the subsidy removal on Nigerians, adding that it has resulted in job losses, depression, violent reactions and increased poverty.

The Executive Secretary said: “As we commemorate this day, we acknowledge the critical role that each member of society plays in creating a better world. Just as a village relies on the cooperation and support of its people to thrive, so too must our global community unite to address the pressing humanitarian challenges facing us.”

The Human Rights Boss emphasized that the well-being of every individual is intrinsically linked to the well-being of the entire human family. Injury to one is injury to all and as Mother Teresa said, “if you cannot feed one hundred people, then feed just one”

The Executive Secretary further said that the Commission’s shared commitment to human rights demands that Nigerians stand in solidarity with those who are vulnerable, marginalized, and in need. “Together, we can build a stronger and more compassionate world, where every person’s rights are upheld, regardless of their background or circumstances”.

He used the opportunity of this year’s commemoration to call on governments, civil society organizations, and individuals to work collaboratively in addressing issues such as poverty, conflict, displacement, and environmental degradation confronting the less privileged Nigerians.

He said fostering a culture of empathy, understanding, and active engagement to address humanitarian crisis can ensure that the principles of human rights remain at the forefront of our actions.

He added that providing humanitarian services can help create a world where justice reigns, respect for human dignity is upheld, the weak and vulnerable are strengthened, people are happy and conflicts will ultimately be reduced.

On this World Humanitarian Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to the values that bind us together as a nation, recognizing that it is our collective responsibility to create a just and inclusive society where every individual’s rights are respected and upheld.

He paid tributes to humanitarian heroes who lost their lives in providing selfless services to humanity all over the world. He said of special importance is the Office of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees UNHCR, which has been collaborating with the Commission to address the humanitarian needs of Nigerians in several parts of the country. The United Nations has set aside every 19th of August every year as WHD.

Over 3.5 million Displaced by Crisis in Nigeria-UN37 Aid Workers Lost, 24 Wounded, 34 Kidnapped in North East Since 2016

Over 3.5 million people are internally displaced in the country as a result of crises, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) data has revealed.

Also the insurgency in the Northeast, mostly affecting Borno, Adamawa and Yobe (BAY) states have led to the lost of 37 aid workers since 2016 with additional 24 wounded and 34 kidnapped, according to the Aid Worker Security Database.

Speaking at the commemoration of the World Humanitarian Day, which was marked in Abuja by a road walk by stakeholders in the Humanitarian sector, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Dr. Nasir Sani Gwarzo noted that the essence of this year’s theme, #NoMatterWhat, encapsulates the profound essence of humanitarian action, being the core principle that drives humanitarians is their steadfast commitment to extending life-saving assistance, irrespective of an individual’s identity or geographical location.

He said: “Humanitarian workers stand as beacons of hope, traversing perilous paths to ensure aid reaches its intended recipients, regardless of the challenges they encounter. In recognizing that crises recognize no boundaries, humanitarians, too, acknowledge no barriers in their mission to assist those in dire need—No Matter What.”

Gwarzo said: “It is paramount to acknowledge that frontline humanitarian workers are integral to the well-being of our nation. Their selfless endeavours amidst conflict zones and areas afflicted by natural disasters epitomize service to Nigeria. Their altruism not only ameliorates the conditions of those they assist but also contributes to the stability and prosperity of our nation. Regrettably, since 2016, the Aid Workers Security Database has recorded the tragic loss of 37 aid workers, with 24 wounded and 34 kidnapped in the North East of Nigeria. The current year has already witnessed the kidnapping of five aid workers in the North East, alongside similar incidents from various corners of our nation.

He said: “As we gather here today to mark World Humanitarian Day, it is vital to acknowledge that countless individuals are grappling with humanitarian crises across Nigeria. These crises stem from diverse causes, ranging from insurgency and banditry to clashes between farmers and herders, compounded by the impacts of climate change. According to the UNHCR Operating Data, a staggering 3,578,966 internally displaced persons were recorded as of June 2023 in the North East, North West, and North Central regions of Nigeria. Families, venerable and resilient, find themselves navigating dire circumstances, often contending with acute needs such as sustenance, shelter, water, protection, and livelihoods.

“In the face of these challenges, both the Government of Nigeria and the entire humanitarian community have redoubled their efforts to provide meaningful responses. These endeavours are a testament to the resolute commitment of aid workers who persistently deliver assistance under the most challenging circumstances, embodying the essence of this year’s World Humanitarian Day theme.”

On his part, the United Nations (UN) Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Nigeria, Mr. Matthias Schmale, said this year’s World Humanitarian Day honours all aid workers who step up each day to provide life-saving assistance to millions of people in north-east Nigeria and other parts of the country, noting that “despite daunting challenges, humanitarians work tirelessly to deliver assistance to those in need no matter who, no matter where, no matter what.”

He said: “On a number of occasions I have seen for myself how hard humanitarians in north-east Nigeria are working in extremely difficult circumstances, often risking their lives and safety to support people in need.”

He added that: “Since 2016, 37 aid workers have been killed in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe (BAY) states, according to the Aid Worker Security Database. Additionally, 24 have been wounded and 34 kidnapped, commending: “The courage, dedication and perseverance of national and international aid workers on the front line who deliver no matter what is deeply impressive.”

He revealed that the UN and its partners aim to assist six million people in north-east Nigeria through the 2023 Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP), while stating that additional funding is urgently needed, even as he lamented that the plan appealed for USD$1.3 billion but is currently only 29 per cent funded.

Schmale lamented that the deteriorating food security and nutrition situation is one of the most alarming aspects of the crisis in the north-east, decrying that an estimated 4.3 million people are food insecure in the BAY states, according to the March 2023 Cadre Harmonisé assessment.

He noted that some two million children under five are likely to face acute malnutrition this year, adding that: “To urgently operationalize time-sensitive and critical activities, the United Nations and partners launched a $396 million Lean Season Multi-Sector Plan as part of the HRP. While partners have made significant progress, including reaching approximately 2.1 million people with food assistance, they are challenged by limited funding, as this prioritised plan is only 51 per cent funded.”

He however noted that despite facing tremendous difficulties, aid workers persist each day, standing shoulder to shoulder with affected communities. He said: “On this day, and every day, I salute the commitment and perseverance of humanitarian workers.”

He promised that: “No matter what, the humanitarian community will continue to work together in support of government and other key actors to save, protect, and improve lives.”

We Are Yet To Receive USAID $1m Donation For Flood Victims – NEMA DG

The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mustapha Ahmed said the agency did not receive any $1 million donation from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), for the support of flood victims in 2022.

The NEMA boss stated this when journalists asked to know about the funds promised and widely celebrated in 2022.

The then US Embassy, in a statement by the US. Ambassador in October 2022, Mary Beth Leonard had announced the donation.

The US had explained that the unusual heavy rainfall, which resulted in flooding, had affected nearly 2.8 million people across the country, leaving many homes damaged or completely destroyed, displacing millions of persons.

The US government had stressed that the $1 million in new USAID support would allow local partners on the ground to provide emergency shelter assistance, relief commodities, and hygiene kits to promote safe and healthy practices amid the on-going cholera outbreak and multipurpose cash assistance for people affected by the devastating floods.

Part of the statement had stated that: “The United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is providing $1 million in immediate humanitarian assistance to support the people affected by unprecedented flooding in Nigeria.”

However, after over 10 months from then, NEMA, the lead agency in humanitarian response, is yet to get the donation.

According to the DG NEMA: “I also read about the story in the papers last year but I can confirm that we have not received any $1million from USAID.”

Meanwhile, the director-general of NEMA Ahmed has assured Zamfara State of the readiness of the agency to assist in addressing the humanitarian problems caused by bandits and terrorists attacks.

He stated this when the governor of Zamfara, Dr Dauda Lawal visited him at the headquarters of NEMA on Friday.

He said: “First I commend the governor to appreciate NEMA for the interventions and I assure you that Zamfara will get all the assistant they need just like other states of the federation.”

Earlier, the Zamfara state governor had said he was at the NEMA headquarters to seek assistance with the Internally Displaced Persons resulting from several bandit attacks in the state.

SADC Supports AU, ECOWAS Positions on Niger Coup D’etat

The Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) bloc in Nigeria on Thursday said the action taken so far by both the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on the political impasse brought about by the military coup d’etat in Niger Republic are in order.

The SADC in Nigeria made up of Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, DR Congo, South Africa, Angola, Tanzania and Namibia threw its weight behind the actions taken so far by the continental body and the West African subregional bloc to force the military junta led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani to hand over power back to President Mohamed Bazoum.

Speaking with journalists at Hope of Survival Ophanage Home, Abuja where the SADC donated food items to orphans as part of activities to mark the organisation’s anniversary, the High Commissioner of Namibia to Nigeria and the Dean of the SADC, H.E. Humphrey Geiseb, said the Southern Africa is part of the African Union and definitely concerned about the situations of coups as expressed by ECOWAS which is a regional body just like the Southern Africa Development Community, and equally by the African Union.

He said: “So, we are fully behind the statements and positions of ECOWAS and the African Union.”

Geiseb, while noting that Southern African region is mostly peaceful, as “we hold regular elections and democracy is very strong in our region,” said there is need for continuity of democracy everywhere on the continent.

Geiseb who led other envoys from SADC in Nigeria to the donation of the food items put at over N3 million, explained that the Southern Africa region is part of the African Union, stressing that whatever happens in other regions of the African continent indirectly affects SADC.

Speaking about the decision to visit the orphanage, he said the SADC wanted to provide succour to the orphans and also demonstrate the enduring friendship between the Southern African countries and the government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He said: “We came to celebrate with the orphanage here by making official donations.

“This is our way of honoring the Southern Africa Development Community as well as the Federal Government of Nigeria which has supported strongly the liberation struggle of Southern Africa.

“Today, our sub-continent is free and independent. Many of our countries can recall that the Federal Republic of Nigeria has strongly supported us during the dark days of colonialism.”

While commending the SADC for the gesture, Mrs. Ruth Ibrahim, proprietress of the orphanage home, said the gifts would go a long way in helping her to feed the 75 children under the care of the home.

She, however, called for assistance in paying the school fees of the children in the orphanage home, stressing that it had been difficult for the management to cope with the high cost of education in the country.

“With the level of insecurity ongoing in Nigeria, smuggling of weapons, armed banditry, terrorism, farmers herders clashes, money laundering and sundry vices there cannot be a better time for people at management level to be exposed to serious training that you are undertaking.”

She charged the participants to justify the confidence reposed in them, advising them to allow the knowledge gained to cascade to subordinates and spread.

The Acting CG, speaking on the need for collaboration, said: “I want you to know that inter-agency synergy and collaboration cannot be overemphasised so work with your colleagues , share intelligence, when you see something, say something. Be loyal, be dedicated.”

USAID, Other Stakeholders Partner to Reduce Malnutrition

The United States government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), in collaboration with the Government of Nigeria and other stakeholders, held a trade fair in Abuja to foster innovation and collaboration to address severe acute malnutrition.

Tagged “Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Foods (RUTF) and other Life-Saving Nutrition Commodities Expo”, the event provided a platform for government officials, the donor community, and RUTF manufacturers to discuss challenges, share experiences, network, and explore collaborative opportunities in expanding RUTF programmes.

It also allowed local manufacturers, investors, and other operators in the RUTF and other life-saving nutrition commodities value chains to showcase their products and innovations.
In Nigeria, severe acute malnutrition remains a significant public health concern, affecting 3.6 million children.

USAID in a statement on Wednesday said with persistent challenges related to food insecurity, limited access to quality healthcare, and inadequate nutrition interventions, the situation calls for robust multisectoral collaboration and innovation. Expanding sustainable local access to affordable life-saving nutrition commodities is essential to address severe malnutrition in Nigerian children.

The 2021 Food Consumption and Micronutrients Survey revealed that the prevalence of severe malnutrition in Nigerian children has increased from 7 to 12 percent over the last five years.

Alarmingly, only 2.8 percent of these children received treatment with therapeutic foods due to inadequate access to RUTF. One aspect of increasing access to this lifesaving treatment is being addressed through the local production and procurement of RUTF. Leading local producers, including Ariel Foods, Emzor Foods, Dabs, and Nutri-K, have demonstrated the capacity to sustainably supply these life-saving nutrition commodities.

Speaking at Wednesday’s event in Abuja, USAID Mission Director Dr. Anne Patterson said: “This Trade Fair provides a much-needed platform for local manufacturers, investors, and other operators in the RUTF and nutrition commodities value chain to display their products and innovations. In addition, participants will have a valuable opportunity to network and build connections with the Nigerian government, donors, implementing partners, and other stakeholders. We hope that this trade fair provides a platform to build meaningful relationships that will result in sustainable local access to affordable, lifesaving, nutrition commodities that help reduce severe malnutrition in Nigeria.”

According to Interim Chief of Party for the USAID funded Feed the Future Nigeria Rural Resilience Activity, John Rachkara, this Trade Fair is a game changer.

He said: “Supporting local production of specialized nutritious products and facilitating linkages for local sourcing of raw materials will undoubtedly drive down the cost of RUTF production. If the costs come down, we can save more lives with the same amount of resources.

“With the partnerships formed during this trade fair, we expect to see a turning point in the fight against malnutrition in Nigeria, leading to a bright future where no child is left malnourished.”

Amina Mohammed: Africa, Best Investment Proposition of 21st century

United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed has observed that Africa is the best investment proposition of the 21st century, in view of its natural resources, arable land and massive population.

She said: “The long term structural endowments of our continent are as strong as ever, most of the world’s natural resources are in Africa and 60% of the world’s arable land and a massive population of motivated youth, Africa is the best investment propositions of the 21st century.”
She gave the verdict at the second edition of the Africa Social Impact Summit co-convened by the Sterling One Foundation and the United Nations in Nigeria, and held in Lagos.

According to a statement on Tuesday, she cautioned that investment in Africa must go beyond extracting raw material, and emphasized that “It must build the roots of a modern economy, hard and soft infrastructure alike, and this must include bold investments into Africa’s strongest asset, its people at the continental, national and local levels.”

Mohammed advocated for channeling massive, targeted investments into youth development, local employment and employability, climate smart solutions, education, health, renewable energy and improved water and sanitation facilities.
However, she cautioned that it would require the private and public sectors working together to scale the necessary financing instruments, guarantees de-risking mechanisms, to strengthen Africa’s development finance network and its institutions.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, stressed the need for all to come together with a renewed spirit of collaboration, innovation, and determination, to build a prosperous and sustainable Africa for all.

Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, said that the various projections suggested that Africa would be home to over half of the world’s poorest people by 2030, and that alone underscored the urgency and importance of the summit and the work all needed to do.

“I call upon the private sector, with its scale, sustainability, and innovation, to take the lead in driving change. We must harness the strength of our multi-stakeholder partnerships and leverage enterprise-driven innovations to create impact ecosystems that foster inclusive growth and recovery.” The Governor said.

The Chief Executive Officer of Sterling One Foundation, Olajeju Ibekwe, disclosed that the second edition of the Africa Social Impact Summit was a marked improvement on the 2022 edition.

She said: “I am also humbled by the intentionality of the private sector to own the sustainable development goals and move the needle. We are grateful to the partnership of the United Nations as our co-convenor for this conference.”

Ibekwe expressed hope for several partnerships and innovations to emerge from the summit, adding that: “And we are also looking forward to existing social impact initiatives in different rural communities, accessing more resources, multilevel resources to be able to do more and spread their impact from communities to communities across the Africa.”

Earlier, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Matthias Schmale, emphasized that “You can’t do business on a dead planet. Africa’s private sector can be a catalyst for change, supercharging our trajectory towards the 2030 Agenda.”

To achieve the pace and scale of transformative change that the world needs, Schmale noted that private sector investments must not just be motivated by profit but by considerations of what would have the greatest social impact.
He urged the CEOs and investors to embed sustainability into their decision making and align their business practices with the SDGs.

The theme of the Summit held on 10 – 11 August 2023, was ‘Global Vision, Local Action: Repositioning the African Development Ecosystem For Sustainable Outcomes.’

NSCDC to Commence Immediate Manhunt of Infrastructure Vandals in Abuja

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSCDC) has said it would commence the immediate manhunt of infrastructure vandals and manhole thieves in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja

The promise was made on Tuesday by the newly deployed Commandant of the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT), of the Corps, Olusola Odumosu, while taking over the Command.

Odumosu, who took over the Command after years of service as the Corps National Director of Public Relations, (DRO) at the national headquarters, Abuja, said “We will tackle the menace of manhole theft since the criminals are not relenting, we too will not relent and will ensure that we put them where they belong. I am going to declare war in vandals and manhole thieves in Abuja.”

He added that: “I want you to know that FCT Command by virtue of location is very central and is in fact the eyes of the corps. So much attention is focused on the FCT therefore we have to live up to expectation, we have to disappoint all the naysayers hence under my leadership, I want us to transform the FCT command.

“I am the son of my father the Commandant General of the Corps, Dr. Ahmed Audi and you see how he operates, hence we are going to work very asidiously, we are going to put in our best and that is why I want to encourage you all.”

Odumosu, while charging officers of the corps on the need for discipline and total dedication to duty, also urged officers to exercise civility in dealing with members of the public and stay away from harassing civilians especially journalists in the course of their duties.

He said: “NSCDC is one organisation that has enjoyed social acceptability among the people and that is one of the comparative advantage that we have therefore under my leadership, everyone of you is an ambassador of the corps.

“One of the things I will have issues with is any unbecoming act by a civil defender that will embarass the corps.”

Odumosu takes over from Commandant Peter Maigari, who has been nominated and thus proceeding on a strategic course at the National Security Institute for the next one year.
