BREAKING: PDP Submit Names To INEC To Replace Sacked Ebonyi Gov, Deputy

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it has submitted names of its nominees to replace the sacked Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi and his Deputy, Dr Eric Kelechi Igwe.

The National Chairman of the PDP, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, made the disclosure on Tuesday, during a world press conference at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja.

Senator Ayu revealed that the names of the nominees have been submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He said that the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) had endorsed the names of nominees to be sworn in as Governor and Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State.

Meanwhile, the names of the nominees are yet to be made known, just as Ayu has maintained that “we are not going to release the names immediately. But the names will soon be made available to the press”.

It could be recall a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, sacked Governor Umahi of Ebonyi State and his Deputy, Dr Eric Kelechi Igwe, following their defection from the PDP to the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).

How & Why Gov. Umahi, Deputy Were Sacked:

The court, in a judgement that was delivered by Justice Inyang Ekwo, held that the total number of 393, 042 votes governor Umahi secured during the March 9, 2019 governorship election in Ebonyi state, belonged to the PDP and same could not be legally transferred to the APC.

According to the court, having defected to the APC, both Umahi and his deputy, not only jettisoned the PDP, but also the votes that belonged to it.

It held that going by the outcome of the governorship election, the office of the governor and deputy governor in Ebonyi state, “belong to the Plaintiff and no other political party”.

“There is no constitutional provision that made the ballot transferrable from one party to the other”.

It held that the PDP is bound to retain the votes and mandate that was given to it by electorates in Ebonyi state, as both governor Umahi and his Deputy could not validly transfer same to APC.

The court, therefore, ordered both Umahi and Igwe to immediately vacate their positions.

It ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to immediately receive from the PDP, names of persons to replace Umahi and his Deputy, or in the alternative, conduct a fresh gubernatorial election in Ebonyi state in line with section 177(c) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

The court further restrained both Umahi and Igwe from further parading themselves as governor or deputy governor of Ebonyi state.

The judgement followed a suit the PDP lodged before the court.

16 Ebonyi Lawmakers Also Get Sack

Justice Inyang Ekwo, in a judgment, ordered the lawmakers to stop parading themselves as representatives of the people after dumping the party on which platform they were elected into the house of assembly.

Some of the lawmakers include Odefa Obasi Odefa, Victor Chukwu, Kingsley Ikoro, Joseph Ununu, Nkemka Okoro, among others.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Justice Ekwo had on Jan. 19 fixed Tuesday for the judgment in the suit filed by the PDP against the governor and his deputy. (NAN)

Umahi Continues To Boast ‘I Remain Ebonyi State Governor

Following the judgement of the Federal High Court sacking him from office, Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi has maintained that he still remains the incumbent governor of the state.

Umahi stated this in his office while briefing journalists in Abakaliki.

Petitioner Demands N115 Million Compensation For Police Brutality

A complainant, Michael Uzoagba has demanded a compensation of N115 million from Nigerian Police for his alleged unlawful arrest, detention and property seizure in 2018.

Uzoagba, made a plead for the compensation on Tuesday at the Independent Investigation Panel on Human Rights Violations by the defunct SARS and other units of the Nigerian Police sitting in Abuja.

The petitioner who was led in his testimonies by his counsel, Ohiovor Maria of the Legal Aids Council of Nigeria informed the panel that his wares including refrigerator, televisions sets, electric iron etc were on two occasions carted away by the Police in Bwari, Federal Capital Territory.

He said he wants compensation against the Police as follows; N100 million for general damages, N10 million for unlawful arrest and detention for three days and N5 million for malicious prosecution.

In his narration before the panel presided over by Dr.Garba Tetengi, who stood in for the Chairman, Justice Suleiman Galadima (rtd), Uzoagba told the panel that on the fateful day, while he was in his shop, he saw five policemen asking him the whereabouts of his son.

According to him, he replied the police team that he did not know where his son was at that time, only for them to start picking his electronics and electrical appliances he displayed in his shop for sale and packing them into their own standby vehicle.

Before moving the said items into the Police vehicle, he told the panel that Police team made a call presumably to the DPO of Bwari Police station and thereafter, they went ahead with the removal of the electrical appliances. He said he queried the operation and no answer was given to him to justify the action.

He said apparently not knowing what to do to recover the items from the Police, he informed the panel that he went to Radio House and lodged a complaint with respect to the said seizure of his properties by the Police.

He lamented that despite the intervention by the Radio House, the Police have allegedly refused to release the said goods but rather instituted a court case against him for daring to take the Police to the Radio House.

Asked by the Acting Chairman, Tetengi to state the value of the entire property allegedly taken by the Police and what he wants the panel to do for him in the circumstance, the petitioner put the value at over N10 million and that he wants the panel to help him and recover the said items from the Police.

In their response, the Police represented in the matter by Fidelis Ogwobe told the panel that he needed more time to contact the police officers listed as respondents in the case to enable him put up a defense for the Police.

Respondents in the petition are Makinde Ola, DPO Bwari Police station FCT, Shunku Terhermber, Bwari Police station FCT, Commissioner of Police FCT and Inspector General of Police.

The case was adjourned till 21st March, 2022 for cross-examination of the petitioner.

Procurement Acts: BPP Caught in NIPOST Certification Scandal

Reports on Monday indicated that Staff of the Nigerian Postal Service, NIPOST may be out for a showdown with the management over what some of the staff describes as tribal sentiment and blind interest under Dr. Adebayo Adewusi led management.

The staff also faulted the role of Bureau of Public Procurement, BPP in awarding a certificate to a staff of the organisation, which according to them did not have a background in procurement, adding that by the procurement act, he was not supposed to attend such a course or obtain a certificate to that effect.

“They (Management) have flouted the procurement acts by awarding procurement certification to staff without procurement background in the 2021 procurement conversion examination.” A source in the organisation told journalists.

Also the staff in a petition written to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of Federation insists that, the staff, a 54 year old Mr. Samuel Oluwasegun Sangotayo, which was on the BPP list number 118 with Examination number BPP/PCC/NOV/2021/142 was co-opted into the procurement department of NIPOST with fraudulent intention as he has no background in procurement before the NIPOST Management move against the procurement acts and rules of the civil service to appoint him as Director of Procurement.

The petition in part reads: “From all indications NIPOST has co-opted the BPP into its fold of agencies that abuse and flagrantly disregard extant rules, guidelines/procedures. This is manifested in the impunity by NIPOST management in planting a 54 years old substantive Deputy Director( Legal) on GL 16, by name Mr. Samuel Oluwasegun Sagontayo, in the procurement department, and allowing him to attend Procurement conversation course in 2021.

“This is against the procurement act. To Staff amazement the BPP went ahead to issue Certificate to this unworthy candidate despite petition. Mr. Samuel Oluwassegun is number 118 on the BPP Certification lists. This is contrary to a circular from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, dated 14th June, 2017 with reference No. 59780/S.1/1.1/117 which states that Officers from other cadres in civil service are prohibited from procurement functions where career procurement Officers are available.

“Specifically, the BPP mandatory conversation training guidelines for 2021 as obtained from its website clearly indicated that; 2(b) Current cadre and grade level (Nominees should not be above GL 15 or equivalent). Why was Mr. S. O. Sagontayo, who has been on GL.16 since January 2018, allowed to take part in the November 2021 conversion exercise? Has the rules changed? 3(e) Nominees who are more than 50years of age or have less than 5years in service are not qualified to apply. Here the rule was violated because Mr. S.O Sagontayo is 54 year of age.”

According to staff of NIPOST the organization has moved from bad to worse since the coming on board of Dr. Ismail Adewusi, who took over the administration of NIPOST in December 2019.

“Under him (Dr. Ismail Adewusi) management have been operating with total disregard to the laid down rules and procedures obtainable in civil service. The provision of a circular from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, dated 14th June, 2017 with reference No. 59780/S.1/1.1/117 states that Officers from other cadres in civil service are prohibited from procurement functions where career procurement Officers are available.

“On the contrary, a case in hand is the drafting of a non-career officer, a deputy director from the legal department to succeed the retired Director, while there are two (2) senior certified procurement officers with total disregard to the above cited circular.” The source said

Attempt to speak to the Director Corporate Communication; Mr. Frank Alao did not yield result as his phone is not reachable.

UK Holds Workshops For SARCS

-From Our Special CORRESPONDENT:

United Kingdom government has held training workshops for all 33 Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs) and their main stakeholders in Nigeria.

The workshops which held between 28 February and 4 March, were developed to offer critical support to SARCs who provide vital assistance and forensic and medical services to children, young people, women, and men who have been sexually abused, assaulted or raped. SARCs also support police and prosecution responses to crimes of sexual violence, abuse and exploitation.

A signed statement by the Press & Public Affairs Officer, Comms Lead, Prosperity and Economic Development, Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, Ndidiamaka Eze said 33 SARC managers and stakeholders at both state and federal level participated in the workshops. This included officials from Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Women’s Affairs, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Ministry of Health, the Nigerian Police Force, as well as staff from hospitals. NGOs including Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC), International Federation of Women Lawyers, Nigeria (FIDA), Nigerian Civil Defence Corps, and UN Women also joined the workshops.

She said: “The workshops were organised by the Consular Section of the British High Commission in Abuja (BHC) and the British Deputy High Commission in Lagos (DBHC). They were paid for through the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development (FCDO’s) Consular Project Fund (CPF), in collaboration with the British Council, who supported the BHC in the preparation of these workshops. The workshops were delivered by visiting field experts, Alison Eaton, a senior retired UK Police Officer and International Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) expert, and Dr Isabelle Kerr, former Centre Manager of Glasgow & Clyde Rape Crisis in Scotland. The workshops complemented the work being done through the EU Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) and Managing Conflict (MCN) programmes implemented by the British Council.”

She disclosed that during the workshops, Alison Eaton and Dr Isabelle Kerr shared outcomes from findings from their recently completed SARCs baseline assessments, coordinated by Consular Section to map SARC services across Nigeria with the aim of improving practice, increasing resources and ensuring improved access to SARCs for survivors across the country. The presenters facilitated the discussion and consultation among SARCs and stakeholders to identify areas of good practice, highlight challenges and gaps in service with a view to standardise practice across the country.

During the workshops, Dr Isabelle Kerr said: “The level of commitment and passion shown by managers and staff within SARCs is enormous and shows how the grit and determination of those who believe in survivor justice and wellbeing can achieve so much. State and government investment in policy and strategic direction for this work is crucial but we must not forget or ignore the frontline services that are being delivered by small, dedicated teams under sometimes challenging and under-resourced conditions. Both Alison and I were honoured to be asked to contribute our years of experience to this work.”

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing who quoted to have said:
“It is incredibly encouraging to see how much work is being done to provide accessible services to survivors of rape and Sexual and Gender Based Violence in Nigeria. We were delighted to welcome Alison Eaton and Dr Kerr from the UK to build on this. Thank you to the British Council for the support they have offered to help to set up these workshops for us.

“Preventing sexual violence is a really important issue for me and for the UK government. The UK Foreign Secretary, Liz Truss, has put this at the absolute top of her priorities. And I am mandated to really engage and lean in on this to support efforts to ensure that all women are given a genuine chance to realise their potential and gain the support they need to do so.”

These workshops organised by the BHC and funded by the FCDO will complement the current support that the British Council are providing to SARCs through their The Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) programme and their Managing Conflict in Nigeria (MCN) programmes. RoLAC is concluding a 7-month intervention that will feed into the design of the European Union’s continued support to SARCs under RoLAC’s successor. Cocaine Deal: Abba Kyari, Others Arraigned In Court As 2 Co-Defendants Plead Guilty

-From Our Special CORRESPONDENT:

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA on Monday arraigned the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari and six others before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court 8, Abuja, on an eight count criminal charge bordering on conspiracy and drug trafficking.

When the charge in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CR/57/2022, was read to the accused, DCP Abba Kyari; ACP Sunday Ubia; ASP James Bawa; Inspector Simon Agirigba; Inspector John Nuhu, who are all suspended police officers, pleaded not guilty while two other co-defendants Chibunna Umeibe and Emeka Ezenwanne pleaded guilty.

In the charge, NDLEA accused Kyari and the four other police officers of conspiracy, obstruction, and dealing in cocaine worth 17.55 kilogrammes. They were also accused of tampering with 21.25k kilogrammes of cocaine unlawfully.

The accused had arrived the Federal High Court premises under heavy security by NDLEA Strike Force officers. While the five-member prosecution team was led by the agency’s Director of Prosecution and Legal Services, Sunday Joseph, while Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN led 13 other lawyers to represent Kyari and Ubia. ASP James Bawa had Michael Mbanefo and Mariam Osene as defence counsel while M.Y Chiara and two others represented Agirigba and Nuhu, with EU Okenyi appearing for Umeibe and Ezenwanne.

After the accused took their pleas, Chief Agabi told the court that he had filed bail applications for the 1st and 2nd defendants since Tuesday 1st March 2022, a bid the prosecution opposed with a counter application. Justice Nwite in his remarks said he was yet to get the prosecution’s counter application and thereafter adjourned further hearing on bail to Monday 14th March.

The defence counsel urged the trial judge to remand the defendants in NDLEA custody instead of the Nigerian Correctional Centre, a request the prosecution said would not be objected on the ground that the defendants will be responsible for their own upkeep.

The defence counsel expressed fear that the review of facts against the 6th and 7th defendants who pleaded guilty will prejudice the case and therefore urged that the court put the review on hold pending the conclusion of the trial of the 1st to 5th defendants.

The NDLEA prosecution counsel however opposed the plea citing an existing judgment. He urged that the court should proceed with the sentencing of the 6th and 7th defendants since they had pleaded guilty adding that it will be totally unfair to keep them in prison pending the trial of the 1st to 5th defendants.

In all, five bail applications were filed for the 1st to the 5th defendants while the 8th defendant who is also a police officer is still at large. Justice Nwite adjourned the case to 28th of March 2022 for a review of facts and hearing of the case while all respondents are to be remanded in NDLEA facility pending the hearing of the bail application next Monday.

-From Our Special CORRESPONDENT:

A petitioner, Otomerhe Onaodowan, on Monday told the Independent Investigative Panel on human rights violations by the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and other police units in Abuja, how her two sons Collins Onaodowan and Owen Onaodowan were extra-judicially killed by the police, in Delta, in 2010.

The complainant, an elderly woman, informed the panel that her two sons went to watch premier league at Duro Stores, while watching in the company of other spectators, armed robbers invaded the store and shot one of the spectators, a soldier in the foot.

Testifying before Dr Garba Tetengi, who stood in for the Chairman, she said that while everyone ran for safety, the owner of Duro Stores held on to her two boys and claimed that they were part of the armed robbery gang, while the second soldier present called the police and the boys were whisked away to Ekpan Police Station.

Immediately the news got to her about their arrest she and their father went to the police station where they were being detained, though they were denied entry on the account that it was late and was advised to come back the next day.

Otomerhre said when she visited the police station the next day, she saw her children in a degrading and inhuman condition, she noted that her two boys one a university undergraduate and the other a corper with the National Youth Service Corp “were stripped naked and lying on the floor”.

On her third visit to Ekpan Police Station, the family was informed about the death of the two boys “ the DPO showed my husband the pictures of the bodies of my children, but their corpse has not been released to the family till date.”

Under cross-examination, Counsel to respondents, Malik Taiwo, asked if there were any steps she took to find out what led to the death of her children. At this point, she informed the panel that after the death of her children, she went to National Human Rights Commission, thereafter the case was charged to court.

In court, at the end of the trial, the case was stuck out due to lack of evidence.

Taiwo further sought to know why the court judgement was not filed alongside the petition before the panel.

The panel ruled that the certified true copies of the judgement be presented before the panel at the adjourned date.

The matter was adjourned to 21st March 2022, for a continuation of hearing and defence.

FG Moves To Restore 4 Million Degraded Forest

From Mike SOGBOLA/ Abuja-Nigeria:

The Federal Government said it will soon move to restore 4 million hectares of degraded land forest and landscape, which is inline with its commitment to the Africa Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative, (AFR100).

It however said that this would only be achievable through stakeholders’ collaboration that would create an enabling environment for the exchange of information relating to successful implementation through its various engagements.

The Minister of State for Environment, Sharon Ikeazor, disclosed this at the Formal Inauguration of the AFR100 National Stakeholders Platform on Degraded Forest and Landscape Restoration in Nigeria, held in Abuja on Thursday.

Ikeazor said the AFR100 would accelerate achievement of food security, increase climate change resilience and mitigation as well as combat rural poverty.

The Minister added that: “This will not only contribute to the UN decade on ecosystem restoration but will also deliver on the objectivities of the three global Multilateral Environmental Agreements, that is the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, UNFCCC, United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, UNCCD and the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, UNCBD.”

She noted that landscape restoration is not limited to planting trees, it is about restoring the whole landscape and involves several sectors such as agriculture, livestock, forest and the environment, town planning and housing, water and sanitation, energy, tourism and land use planning.

She said that “the platform would serve as a framework for exchange of experience, sharing of results and dissemination of information on the restoration of forest and degraded landscapes in Nigeria to track and monitor progress thereby subscribing to the Bonn challenge barometer.”

She added that: “After more than four years since Nigeria joined the AFR100 imitative, the government through the Federal Ministry of Environment with the Department of Desertification, Land Degradation and Drought Management as the focal department for the AFR100 initiative is here to inaugurate the AFR100 national stakeholder’s platform to foster collaboration among MDA’S public and private Oragnisation, CBO’s, NGO’s, as this would enhance coordination of restoration activities and strengthen partnership.”

She claimed that collective commitment towards sustainable land management practices would help conserve and restore the Nigeria environment and make the country vulnerable to climate change.
Ikeazor said each year, 13 billion hectares of forest are lost to land conversion for agriculture uses such as pasture and cropland.

She lamented that: “This has detrimental effects on regional water availability, soil fertility, biodiversity, and climate change. More than 70% of all natural ecosystems have been transformed to produce food and animal, illegal logging is threatening forest worldwide, home to several indigenous people, communities and wildlife.”

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Environment, Mr Hassan Musa, said the AFR100 stakeholder platform would create awareness, promote sustainable practice, and serve as frame work for the exchange of experience as well as sharing of results and dissemination of information on restoration activities in the country.
It would also present an opportunity for public and private sectors to demonstrate large scale of transformative action to restore degraded land.

He said; “A national stakeholder’s platform for forest Landscape Restoration was convinced to help harmonise and integrate various interventions on restoration in the country, to accelerate restoration practices towards achieving the commitments to the African Forest Initiative, AFR100 and the Bonn challenge.”

He also commended the development partners especially the United Nations Development Program UNDP for sponsoring this meeting to foster collaboration amongst stakeholders and hasten the restoration of degraded forest and landscapes.

AFR100 Regional Coordinator for West Africa, Dr Oluseynou Ndoye commended the Nigerian government for taking the decision to restore 4m hectares of degraded land forest and land by 2030, being the second largest engagement in West Africa.

He noted that exceeding the objective of the initial commitment, 33 technical partners and 12 financial partners support the initiative.
“The AFR100 Initiative responds to the Africa Union mandate to restore 100million hectares of degraded forest and land by 2030. It is a contribution to Agenda 2063 which is the African continents strategic framework for an inclusive and sustainable development, ” Dr Ndoye added.

The Africa Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative, AFR100 is a country led effort to restore 100m hectares of forest and degraded landscape across Africa by 2030, to date 32 countries have pledged to restore 128million hectares thus surpassing the commitment goal.
It is a pan Africa initiative aimed at restoring 100m hectares of degraded forest and land by the year 2030.

Speaking to journalist on the reason behind the rescheduling of the flight, Ambassador Bolaji Akinyemi, the leader of the Nigeria’s delegation to Poland to evacuate the Nigerians, said the airport authority did not allowed the flight to be boarded because of reason having to doing with overshooting the time allotted for the flight

Akinyemi told journalists on Tuesday in Poland that: “The reality is that the flight has been rescheduled for tomorrow, and then main reason is because of delay during the checking in, they have to gather them together from different hotels and by the time they would be ready after the checking in, the crew that has been waiting since 9am had overshot the time allotted to them because they have a duty hour which is allocated to them, they have waited from 9-2pm and that means they have already waited five hours and they are going to have nine hours flight and that was already more than what is the standard.”

He added that: “The authority of the airport said they won’t allow us to board, this is the reality and then we have to come down.

“Arrangement has been made to ensure that we all stay together in the same hotel and we leave very early tomorrow; 4am we hit the bus and then we can join the flight.”

Speaking at the commemoration of the World Civil Defence Day in Abuja on Tuesday, Audi: “In response to the Safe School Initiative of the Federal Government, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps did a vulnerabnility survey of schools in Nigeria and prepared a framework of proactive security measures to be taken towards addressing the dangerous trend of attack on schools in the Country.”

He disclosed that the survey showed that there are 81,545 registered schools in the country, with about 44,297 of this number private schools while 37,248 are government owned/public schools across the 36 States and the FCT.

He noted that out of this figure, 35,112 are located in urban areas while 47,115 are located in rural areas, stressing that the survey further showed that 22,398 schools have perimeter fencing and 58,967 schools are without perimeter fence.

Audi added that the survey further revealed that only about 17,164 schools have a form of physical security presence whose personnel are largely untrained, and about 62,271 schools have no form of security presence.

He said something needed to be urgently done to address this in order to secure the nation’s schools and chase away the kidnappers.

He however said: “As a way of addressing this dangerous trend, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps recommended the kinetic and non-kinetic approach in finding lasting solution to cases of attacks and kidnapping in schools.

Audi said the Corps also noted the need for a robust partnership/collaboration with Stakeholders such as Ministries, Governors/State Governments, Traditional Leaders, Parents, Students, the Youths, the Clergy (Religious Leaders), Law Enforcement Agencies, Private Guard Companies among others if we must ensure safety in our school environment.

Audi, who incidentally was marking the first year anniversary of his appointment as CG, said as part of the ongoing reform process aimed at improving service delivery in the Private Security Guards Industry, disclosed the Corps is presently carrying out the process of digitalization of the Private Guard Company Department for improved operational efficiency and productivity in the Private Security Industry and for administrative convenience.

He noted that the Department is also coordinating biometric data capturing of all Private Guards, while impressing on the operators to make staff welfare and training its topmost priority.

He said that: “In less than a year, the Private Guard Company Department has renewed 752 licences, sealed 81 erring companies, trained about 4,653 guards and generated about N587,923,000.00 to the coffers of Government.”

The Commandant General, said as part of the achievements of the Corps since his appointment, “in the last six months, the Corps has arrested about 461 suspects for various offences bordering; vandalization and attacks on Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI), cattle rustling, banditry, attacks on farmers and farmlands, illegal mining, etc.”

He noted that all arrested suspects are presently undergoing prosecution in various High Courts across the Country while 43 convictions have equally been secured.

He said: “In addition, well over a hundred illegal refineries have been destroyed within this period under review. The exhibits recovered in the course of these arrests are in the various exhibit yards in each State Command for presentation in evidence during trials in courts.”

He admitted that, significant strides were have made by the Corps in its effort to effectively deliver on its mandate and in addressing the growing insecurity in the country as a result of synergy with the Military and other Sister Agencies of Government.

ATTAHIRU JEGA: THE “LAMENTATION” OF AN UMPIRE

By Austen Akhagbeme

Just yesterday, the former ASUU President and former INEC Chairman, Prof Attahiru Jega, fired a familiar salvo, while speaking at the 2022 Workers’ political conference organised by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC in Abuja.

The former electoral umpire who supervised the 2011 and 2015 General elections in Nigeria seems to be disturbed about the continuous recklessness of governance by a few rogue elites who are pushing the nation into a trajectory of doom, gloom and total collapse.

While one may be tempted to dismiss Jega’s observation as one coming from a disfavoured and presently disadvantaged elite, it is equally pertinent to say that this time around, we must focus on the message rather than the messenger.

Is Nigeria truly governed by a “rabid and reckless band of elites” who are hell-bent on running the nation aground? Are we truly on the trajectory of extinction as a nation, vis-a-vis the existential challenges of insecurity, ethnic politics, skewed federalism and threatening youth unemployment bedevilling our land? And most importantly, can we be redeemed by a careful and painstakingly elected leadership come 2023 given the quality and type of aspirants we have seen so far?

Every day in Nigeria, events that seem to lay credence to these questions and assertions unfold right before our eyes. They are not far-fetched. For example, the ongoing fuel crisis and the lack of courage to call out those who imported the bad premium motor spirit into our shores is again, a pointer to how uncaring a government can be.

That the minister of petroleum is not on the ground while the nation groans in pain and productive man-hour are being wasted in long queues around fuel stations across the country, is another indication of a dumb leadership apparachik powered by a blind bureaucracy.

Now, can we confidently say that Prof Jega is right or wrong? Those who thinks that the erstwhile electoral umpire is wrong are actually economical with the truth. Their stand may be coloured by their personal perception of the persona behind the message. Let us throw away “trivialities” and call a spade its true name. And I think that is what Jega has done.

PUTTING PUTIN ON THE TOTEM POLE

0

If there’s anything you cannot take away from President Vladimir Putin of Russia, it is the spartan determination to win every test of resolve as he’s never the first to blink an eye.

Postulations and deluge of analysis by geopolitical pundits seem to suggest that Moscow may have a rethink as the West and its allies were threatening sanctions if she moves ahead with her plan to invade Ukraine.

As we speak, Russian troops and weapons had found their way into eastern Ukraine through the Russian borders as well as Belarus in the North and also Russian- annexed Crimea to the South; what seems like the beginning of a long war has begun.

But one of the biggest questions, not too many people are willing to ask dispassionately is: what does Putin want in clear, simple and unambiguous terms? Is this former KGB officer who served in East- Germany, merely ambitious based on a sympathetic resonance and a kindred spirit with the old Soviet Union or was he forced to defend himself from a possible future “invasion” by America as x-rayed by the too-close- for- comfort macabre dance of NATO around her neighbourhood?

Despite Vladimir Putin’s generally perceived and widely accepted stubborn and “recalcitrant” persona by the west and their sympathisers, we must dispassionately agree that no one in Putin’s shoes will allow a ‘brotherly’ neighbour like Ukraine to go the way of NATO, with it’s avowed and unfeigned disregard for everything Russia represents.

Those who are pushing Ukraine towards NATO are unfortunately being exonerated from this brouhaha while Moscow is being vilified and projected by Western propagandists as the unreasonable aggressor.

The move by Putin, to him, was strategic, timely and necessary as the best form of defence from a possible emasculation by a self-proclaimed lone superpower using a proximal advantage.

Above all, engaging Ukraine in a war while supporting breakaway enclaves like Donetsk and Donbass disqualifies Ukraine from joining NATO as no nation in such a crisis are allowed to. Especially when he knows that NATO does not have a reason to retaliate militarily on behalf of a non-member state like Ukraine, beyond the sanctions, propaganda and noise making.

Before we crucify Putin, let Capitalism and her superstructure be advised that Vladimir Putin is not alone. The animosity by the EU and their backer does not translate to Russia’s rejection by China and her allies. The earlier a workable truce is brokered and Ukraine is kept a pole apart from NATO, the better for world peace that we all yearn for in this emerging multipolar world.

Jets, Helicopters To Be Deployed To Combat Raging Infernos As NAF, FFS Partner

0

Jets and Helicopters are now to be deployed to combat raging infernos in the country as the Federal Fire Service (FFS) and the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) both agreed to deploy their tactical expertise in suppressing and stemming the tide of incessant fire outbreaks in the country.

The partnership was sealed on Wednesday when the acting Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Dr. Samson Karebo , who is bent on delivering on his mandate, led a delegation of senior firefighters on a courtesy visit to the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, at the headquarters of the Nigerian Air Force in Abuja

The FFS boss, said the the agreement is aimed at deploying aerial aircraft and other aerial resources to combat major fire outbreaks. He said these aircrafts are to be used in aerial command and control roles in fighting major fires, providing tactical coordination with commanders on the ground and other aircraft in the sky.

He explained that the move is to undo the obstacles of lack of access and proximity to affected areas , adding that it is also dangerous for firefighters to enter into some burning buildings to fight fire.

The acting CGF who expressed worry about the frequent fire disasters recorded in the country , which he said was affecting the nation’s economy negatively.

He said with him in the helm, the huge taxpayer’s funds that are annually allocated for firefighting by the federal government would be justified.

Karebo, who also promised not to only meet his obligations but to exceed expectations in the running of the affairs of the Federal Fire Service , said that highly mobile aircraft are positioned around the country to respond to all manner of fires, protect communities, public and commercial buildings as well as to support firefighters on the ground.

He said: “So it is not surprising that the Federal Fire Service is seeking to introduce new technologies against a threat that will only get worse due to climate change.

While explaining that under ideal conditions aircraft can slow a fire enough to allow ground based firefighters an opportunity to contain sections of the fire’s edge by constructing a fireline, the acting CG however noted that wrong winds or dense smoke can also make it impossible for aircraft to operate safely or effectively.

On his part, the Chief of Air Staff, promised to provide the Fire Service with all the necessary support to ensure the safety of Nigerian.

Amao, who revealed that the Nigerian Air force have adequate Aircrafts on ground stressed the need for an outright intensive training for both agencies as it relates to aerial fire fighting to boost effectiveness and an impressive result.

He said, as climate change heats up , alongside the possibility of man-made fire outbreaks, preparing ourselves for the fire storms that are sure to come is a step in the right direction.

It can be reported that to this effect, a committee has been set up to commence the processes of collaboration.

NOBODY CAN IMPOSE ANYBODY ON DELTANS – MSD

0

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA):

The Movement for Stronger Delta, MSD, wants to state it loud and clear that Nobody can impose anybody on Deltans; not even Godfathers, not ethnic-based political pressure groups, and not even Traditional ruler’s groups or Senatorial based Traditional institutions.

Infact, in the history of Delta politics, it has never happened before and it is not likely to happen this time around. What usually obtains before the primaries, is that these groups identify who they prefer to support and then embark on a serious campaign of consultations, negotiations, and agreements with other contending interests to seek alignments and alliances in the quest to garner as many delegates for their favoured candidate.

Democracy is, of course, the government of the people, by the people and for the people and since the voice of the people is the voice of God, it is the people, either in form of nominated or elected delegates for the primaries or the electorate in a general election, that will decide who emerges as the winner at the end of any elections.

It is on the strength and basis of this incontrovertible electoral truism, therefore, that we must continue to appreciate, applaud and reemphasize the clear, unambiguous, and unequivocal statement of our dynamic, unwavering Governor, Senator, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa (Ekwueme), that the primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, will be free, fair and transparent.

Thus, anybody who intends or nurses the personal ambition to govern Delta State, must take this declaration seriously and consider it as sacrosanct in whatever plans, strategies, and campaign module they chose to employ in the run-up to the primaries.

Of course, we have been informed by impeccable inside sources within certain political parties, that they have concluded arrangements to conduct mock primaries, where they have perfected plans to impose a single aspirant on the rest of the party membership with brazen impunity.

Interestingly, Deltans will recall with unerring accuracy, that no Governorship candidate that was imposed by a political party on its members during its primaries and on Deltans during the general election, has ever won any election in the State.

Those who have followed the political history of Delta State objectively can confirm that even in instances where people have shouted that imposition took place, especially in the PDP, the facts have revealed a totally different picture.

For example, many Deltans have falsely continued to perpetuate the erroneous logic that Chief James Ibori imposed a candidate on Deltans in 2007, for the simple reason that they were cousins, yet they forget that the same candidate would have been disqualified from the primaries completely, if not for a fortuitous, in-the-nick-of-time midnight trip to Abuja, which eventually secured a waiver for many of the aspirants to contest the primaries.

It is even rather unfortunate that those who have been trumpeting zoning with seeming reckless audacity and unjustified, unconstitutional authority, have done a great injustice to the tremendous efforts, humongous funds and extremely exerting and tortuous hard work which these aspirants put in, just to drive and fulfill their ambitions in every election.

We are indeed more disturbed by the fact that some of those who are vociferously advocating for zoning today, even to the extent of invoking cataclysmic repercussions should a particular arrangement not be maintained, have forgotten so soon, the “Uvwiamughe Declaration” preceding the 2014 PDP primaries, where the umbrella body of a particular Senatorial zone decided that they will give block votes to a national party that picks one of their own as its governorship candidate for the 2015 general elections.

This declaration was made irrespective of the political fact that it was only Delta North that had not taken its turn at the Governorship of the State, amongst the three senatorial zones and to consolidate on their position, they went ahead, without any qualms whatsoever, to throw their weight and block votes, to their candidate, even when the so-called zoning arrangement ‘demanded’ that it was Delta North’s turn to govern.

We must continue to extol the remarkable equanimity, political brinkmanship, courageous doggedness, and unparalleled sportsmanship of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa who, even when it was obvious that Delta North should take its turn at the Governorship, still campaigned vigorously and admirably on a Pan-Delta mandate, declaring that he was going to be a Governor for all Deltans and not just a Senatorial district champion.

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa participated in a robust, free, fair, and transparent PDP primary election in 2014 and the point must be made categorically clear that heavens would not have fallen, peace would have reigned and Delta State would still have continued to exist as ‘the Big Heart’ or even the ‘Finger of God’, if Okowa had lost that election and that Senatorial zone had carried the day with their candidate.

The simple and singular reason for the peace would have been because Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa (Ekwueme), is a man of peace, a God-fearing man, who has always pursued and championed the cause and entrenchment of peace, not just in his personal life but across Delta State. He did it in 2007, he did it in 2011, and he did it again in 2015, when, as Governor, he accommodated many of those who contested against him as Deltans, in the PDP Primary, in his cabinet. Nobody should therefore attempt to intimidate Governor Okowa. He will always do the right thing in the interest of peace, fairness, and EQUITY.

He is indeed a great and Godly man of peace that all politicians, political group leaders, traditional rulers, and institutions should emulate, instead of invoking restive echoes, for a better society and more harmonious coexistence amongst all Deltans.

If we must tell it like it is, then the naked truth that we are running away from or being economical with is the glaring truth that stares us all in the face and that the unambiguous truth that with the mandatory two terms of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa now achieved and winding down nicely, every Senatorial zone in the State has now had its taste of the Governorship, so nobody or zone will now cry or shout that it has been marginalized or short-changed.

This was the dangerous misnomer that nearly happened in 2015, when some people had cynically plotted with surreptitious subterfuge, to ensure that the two major political parties presented Governorship candidates from only their zone. But God intervened because power comes from God alone. Deltans still remember but as a people under the divine leadership of God, we have forgiven and moved on.

However, it must be pointed out in passing, that Delta State is a geographic entity of major heterogeneous nationalities, lumped together rather unfairly now, but in the wisdom of the delineators then, within cardinal Senatorial zones, coexisting in contiguous yet harmonious proximity, all contributing to the growth, development, commonwealth and collective patrimony of our dear State.

The need for us to join Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and embrace the clarion call towards building a #StrongerDelta for all Deltans is what we should all aspire towards achieving as we match steadily and peacefully towards 2023.

That, indeed, should be the SIMPLE Agenda for all Deltans henceforth.

Federal College of Education (T) Asaba: Delta NUJ Expresses Delight At Pace Of Development

0

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA):

Delta State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has expressed delight at the steady pace of development going on at the Federal College of Education (Technical) Asaba, Delta State.

This concern was expressed by the Chairman of the Union, Comrade Michael Ikeogwu when some members of the State Working Committee paid an unscheduled visit to the Provost, to ascertain the level of development and other sundry issues at the College.

Ikeogwu commended the Provost, Dr. Mrs. Josephine Anene-Okeakwa for the incremental progress the institution has recorded since Dr. Ignatius Ezoem left as Provost, maintaining that she had really fitted into the big shoes left by her predecessor.

He wondered why anybody would want to smear the reputation of the College Provost, whom he said had from every available record distinguished herself in terms of inclusive administration, transparency and accountability.

The number one journalist in the State however, admonished practicing journalists to desist from being used as agents of distractions by fifth columnists within the institution to destabilize the good works of the Provost and tarnish the image of the College.

He nonetheless, commended some members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Delta State Council who painstakingly visited the institution to verify the authenticity of a petition wherein the Provost was alleged to be shielding a staff of the institution under investigation by a panel she set up.

The Chairman who expressed satisfaction with the defence and explanation of the Provost, when she denied ever shielding any staff, reminded journalists that the era of jungle journalism has gone.

Appreciating the NUJ for coming to get clarification from her and some management staff (Deputy Provost, Registrar, Bursar and another), the Provost expressed joy that at least there are professionals who do not engage in media crucification before hearing the truth.

According to her on the issue at stake, “I feel bad that some persons for reasons best known to them, could drag my name unnecessarily in the media. I am a bona-fide daughter of Asaba, so I cannot disgrace my community where this College is situated. Again, I was appointed by the Federal Government because I scored the highest number of marks during the screening and I was found capable for this job as Provost.”

“To the best of my ability, I have done this job honestly and sincerely. I am open to everybody in the College not just as a boss or colleague but as a mother. In all I do, I put God first, my conscience will not allow me to take side on any matter I know is true. I will always stand by the truth and ensure that justice is delivered.”

“The issue is about a petition against a Chief Lecturer in the school, Mr. Okonta bordering on entry cadre. I was not the one who employed him. I was made to understand that he was employed as an Analyst, but as at then, there were no computers in the school, so he was seconded to be lecturing in the school of business.

“The person we are talking about has been studying since he got engaged in the College to the effect that he obtained his Master’s Degree and then PhD. All his credentials are in his file, nothing has changed except that the petitioner was insisting that he had 3rd class in his degree at the point of entry. But they never mentioned that he has also gone to upgrade himself. He had always been in the business of lecturing and when the College left the era of typewriter and procured computers, he was made the Head of ICT of the institution. Through him as a Departmental Head, the College got various accreditations. Such a person is not a neophyte or incompetent in the system.

“However, when the petition was written challenging his entry cadre into the College, I called him as administratively demanded of my office and gave him query to that effect, which he responded to. I then set up a panel where Mr. Samuel Ilabor who is the Chairman ACTU is a member. The petition was also forwarded to ACTU Chairman.”

“After coming up with their report, that is from the Anti Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU), the report was supposed to go through process, but that was not done as the Committee sent a petition directly to ICPC in Abuja. ACTU has no power to hire and fire, they are a Management Committee which deals with ICPC. It was after their report had gone to Abuja, not even Benin which is our zone that they had a rethink and submitted a copy to me, and I minuted it to the management from where it should go to the Council for decision taking.”

“I can only deal with matters affecting staff from level 1-9, anything from there and above, it is the Council that handles that. They couldn’t wait for this process, they sent their petition to the media and started dragging my name and picture in their untrue story.”

“I didn’t shield Mr. Okonta, even though we know this whole thing is happening because of the cooperative election which didn’t go down well with the other faction. Mr. Okonta was the Electoral Committee Chairman and for obvious reasons didn’t play ball as expected. And the people voted their choice because of the subsisting fraud case against the then incumbent group.”

“They just want to smear my name in this matter. I feel disappointed that as a result of election matters, they are taking laws into their hands to destroy the name of the organisation where they earn their livelihood, to the effect that they were using fictitious names, one Dr. Isitua Ifeanyi Obi to write petitions with phone numbers of an Hausa man and another ignorant staff who is in Netherlands on sabbaticals.”

“So, I thank you for hearing our side of the story from me and other management staff. I have nothing to hide, I run a collective administration. Things that I don’t know about are the things they are using against me; but the God that I serve has continued to vindicate me”, Dr. Anene-Okeakwa said.

DELTA APC CRYING WOLF WHERE NONE EXIST – PDP

0

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA):

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Delta State Chapter has dismissed the latest Press Release by the State All Progressives Congress, APC, titled “DELTA APC REJECTS ASTRONOMICAL HIKE IN SCHOOL FEES IN DELTA STATE BY PDP-LED OKOWA ADMINISTRATION”, describing it as cheap and dangerous propaganda to mislead Deltans with the intent to score cheap political points.

A statement by the Delta PDP State Publicity Secretary Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, reads: “Our attention has been drawn to a spurious and totally provocative, misleading drivel signed by a certain Dr. Omene Odafe, who claims to be the Director of Publicity, APC Delta State.

“We do not wish to join issues with this Dr. Odafe who postures as the new so-called APC Delta Director of Publicity, for the simple reason that we have actually lost count of the very many claimants, charlatans, and pretenders to this title, that we have had to engage in the past four years which, on its own, is a clear affirmation that the APC is still a party in name, without form, structure, and Identity.

“Nevertheless, we equally recognize the desperate effort of this so-called Dr. Odafe and the dire need for him to attract some relevance to justify the fugitive, yet transitory and evanescent nature of his new status, and thus, it behoves us, as a responsible political party to clear the air and doubts on the misleading issue of ‘hike in school fees’ just to humour him, by setting the records straight for Deltans.

  1. The erudite, dynamic, and performing Vice Chancellor of Delta State University, the distinguished Professor Andy Egwuyenga, has already cleared the air and set the records straight on the issue of new fees with his statement thus: “The adjustment is only for incoming students. No increase for stale students. There’s too much ignorance about the emergent issues involved.

”DELSU is still among the least fee-paying universities in Delta State. Some people have made it a sign of heroism to insult me. I take them in good faith. In time to come, the farsightedness in DELSU’s decision will become obvious. DELSU is on the rise and now very competitive as a University. We must swallow the bitter pill now for a sustainable higher education.

”To cushion the pains, we now have installment payment of fees and Students work-study program for indigent students to earn extra money while studying. 50% of the work-study is reserved for new students, whose fees have been increased. As for the doctored audio, people can choose what to believe.”

  1. It is also on record that amongst all the State-owned Universities across the Country, Delta State Universities are amongst the few least fee-paying institutions in the Country for new intakes, stale students, indigenes, and non-indigenes. We, therefore, advise Dr. Odafe, as he embarks on his new onerous and thankless assignment as the latest, interim APC spokesperson, to at least bring some credibility to his status, by doing a little bit of research before rushing to publish in the public space.
  2. In fact and from available, incontrovertible facts, APC States are currently charging far more than DELSU for universities and we want to warn Deltans to beware of APC hypocrisy in its statement, because like universities in APC controlled States, they plan to charge even more, if they manage to achieve the impossible, by smuggling themselves into any kind of position of power and authority.
  3. It is obvious that the APC is completely ignorant of the fact that the Higher Education system is largely autonomous and, like is the best practice worldwide, the management of these institutions evolve policies to sustain and upgrade their standards, without being dictated to by the government.
  4. Sadly again, is the unfortunate situation that APC is merely playing politics with education and not concerned about facts on the escalating cost of higher education, especially at the Federal level, where the APC led government’s mismanagement of education is glaringly manifested and it is part of this incompetence that has led to perennial and unending strikes in Universities, which Nigerian students and parents are now suffering.
  5. Let us equally state categorically here, that the establishment of new universities by the government has democratized higher education and opened access to more Deltans and this is one of the major reasons Deltans will continue to reject APC, because it has no good plans for our children and people.
  6. For the avoidance of doubt, let’s state it clearly once again, that the PDP government in the State is still and will continue to support higher education far more than other State Governments.
  7. We wish to also draw the attention of the ignorant APC to a well-circulated official press statement from THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT, STUDENTS UNION GOVERNMENT, DELTA STATE UNIVERSITY, in which the very articulate students’ union leader, Amb. Cyprian Odifili, set out in very brilliant and unambiguous clarity, the efforts of the students union body, to dialogue with all parties including the obviously sponsored “concerned citizens”, as well as the management of DELSU, which are already yielding excellent results.
  8. As for the other silly innuendos and flippant gibberish by the loquacious APC, on the sterling, well documented, and universally applauded performance of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa in the delivery of legacy infrastructural projects and unparalleled good governance, we just want to say that we have heard it all before and we didn’t expect less from Dr. Odafe, who is obviously in a frenzy to impress his new masters that he is equal to the task of promoting a shapeless, formless political party that is confused, fractured, factionalized and completely non-existent, except in name alone.

It is a shame that, in this day and age when Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) have been embraced wholeheartedly across the globe as major economic initiatives to create entrepreneurs, and most growing economies are now private sector driven, the hapless APC still has the analog mindset of creating white-collar jobs in a 21st-century economy, instead of applauding the postmodern initiatives of STEP, YAGEP, PPSP, the Micro Credit Scheme and other skills training and support programmes which have created hundreds of thousands of young Delta entrepreneurs already.

Finally, let us assure the APC in Delta State that Governor Ifeanyi Okowa (Ekwueme) is not and will never be distracted by these puerile and kindergarten efforts of the APC, to rake up futile and unnecessary misinformation about the issue of fees in Delta State Universities, in the collective effort towards building and consolidating a #StrongerDelta for Deltans.

Those who value education will soon realise that in the fullness of time, some of these measures will begin to yield results and like the eminent Prof. Egwuyenga said: “In time to come the far-sightedness in DELSU’s decision will become obvious. DELSU is on the rise and now very competitive as a University. We must swallow the bitter pill now for a sustainable higher education”.

APC should therefore stop inciting unsuspecting Deltans to violence, actions capable of breaching the peace and allow genuine well-meaning stakeholders to employ dialogue, which is already ongoing, to address and resolve any and all grey areas.

Miracle, As “Blind” Women Regain Eye-Sight After Police Raid, Rescue 22 Children In Delta

0

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA) –From Editor’s DESK:

In what could be referred to as MIRACLE, seven women who allegedly faked blindness, using innocent children to extort money from unsuspecting members of the public, suddenly started seeing when Police rounded them up.

Twenty–two children believed to be from the Southeastern states of Anambra, Imo, Abia and Ebonyi were also rescued from being used for street begging by the supposedly blind women.

The women who are said to be child traffickers, having deceived the children’s parents that they were taking them to school, and the children were arrested by the police after a tip-off in the busy city of Warri, Delta State.

Permanent Secretary of Delta Ministry of Women Affairs, Community Development and Social Services, Mrs. Kevwe Agas, explained that the suspects allegedly deceived the parents of the children that they were coming to Delta for educational purposes.

The police excorted the 22 children in a bus and seven women suspects in a separate Sienna bus to the state police headquarters in Asaba.

Mrs Agas said, “FIDA drew our attention to the fact that there were some children on Airport Road, Warri, begging, and that three of them went specifically to a lady that sells close by who told them that some women brought them to Warri to beg, but that they actually told their parents that they were bringing them to school.

“And since they came to Warri, they have been begging and sleeping on the streets. In addition to FIDA, our officers went to the police and we got the police to arrest them.

“We rescued 22 children and arrested seven women who feigned blindness. Upon investigation, we discovered that the women were not even blind but were just feigning it and using the children to beg on the streets.

“So we brought them to Asaba and we are taking them to the police headquarters. We are going re-unite the children with their families in their respective states. The children are from Anambra, Ebonyi, Imo and Abia states, that is what we have been able to establish.

“The women would be prosecuted because there is a Child Right Law in Delta State that prohibits begging and exploitation of children. Even NAPTIP would be involved in this because it has to do with trafficking.”

US Reiterates Commitment To Scaling Up COVID-19 Vaccination

0

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA):

The United States has reiterated its commitment to support Nigeria and other countries around the world to address the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at the Flag-Off of the COVID-19 Mass Vaccination Campaign in Imo State hosted by Governor Hope Uzodinma, the U.S. Ambassador, Mary Beth Leonard, said the United States Global Action plan to help coordinate areas that the world has identified as the most significant barriers to ending the COVID-19 pandemic.

The campaign will increase COVID-19 vaccine access and uptake amongst the people of Imo State.

Leonard noted that the U.S. has recommitted increasing access to vaccines, boosting vaccine confidence by tackling misinformation, improving last-mile vaccine delivery, and supporting health workers to vaccinate people.

She said: “Part of this commitment is reflected in the U.S. donation of over 21.8 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines, accounting for over 35 percent of the total donations to Nigeria.”

The United States Government’s commitment is reflected in the technical and logistics support to ensure vaccines get to all citizens who need them the most. U.S. assistance also focuses on getting vaccines into arms so that no vaccines expire unnecessarily when millions of people need them.

Leonard said: “No one is safe from the pandemic until everyone is safe, and the only way to do that is through safe and effective vaccines.”

Leonard used the opportunity to recognize the efforts of the U.S. -CDC, USAID, and the U.S. Department of Defense Walter Reed Army Program for their support to Nigeria’s vaccine rollout. In addition, she thanked U.S. CDC’s implementing partner, the Catholic Caritas Foundation of Nigeria (CCFN), for their pivotal role in ramping up vaccine access and uptake in Imo and other states.

She commended Governor Uzodinma for his efforts to make the vaccines available. She encouraged all those eligible to come out and get vaccinated to secure the health and wellbeing of the Imo people. She called on community leaders and other gatekeepers to join hands with the government to safeguard the people’s health in the State. “We need your support to champion the vaccination of the people of Imo and protect them from COVID-19. The U.S. Mission in Nigeria stands with you.”

Imo State is currently one of the states in Nigeria with the lowest vaccine uptake. Recent data ranks Imo as 35 out of 36 states (and the FCT) with only 2.3 percent coverage for COVID 19 vaccinations. The flag-off mass vaccination campaign event serves to accelerate and expand COVID-19 vaccination access and uptake. U.S. – CDC, through PEPFAR American Rescue Plan Act funding and its implementing partner, Catholic Caritas Foundation of Nigeria, are at the forefront of providing that support to all the citizens of Imo State. Through PEPFAR, US CDC supports over 83% of the estimated people living with HIV in Imo state with comprehensive treatment services.

Court Grants NDLEA’s Request To Detain Abba Kyari, 6 Others For 2 Weeks

0

Blank NEWS Online (NIGERIA):

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja and presided over by Justice Zainab Dimka Abubakar has granted an application by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA to detain for two weeks embattled Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari and six others under investigation for their involvement in a 25 kilogrammes cocaine deal.

The court gave the order following the application by the anti-narcotic agency, which was argued by its Director of Prosecution and Legal Services, Mr. Sunday Joseph on Tuesday 22nd February 2022.

The Agency had in the application dated 15th February 2022 in suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/111/2022 sought the leave of the court to detain the suspects in NDLEA custody for 14 days pending the conclusion of investigation.

Suspects affected by the order include: DCP Abba Kyari; ACP Sunday Ubia; ASP James Bawa; Inspector Simon Agirigba; Inspector John Nuhu; Chibunna Patrick Umeibe and Emeka Ezenwanne.

In an affidavit supporting the motion, the NDLEA stated that the 6th and 7th respondents (Umeibe and Ezenwanne) confessed upon their arrest in Enugu that they imported the seized cocaine through Addis-Ababa to Enugu on 19th January, 2022.

It further disclosed that “the 1st to 5th respondents (Kyari, Ubia, Bawa, Agirigba and Nuhu) are police officers who carried out the arrest of the 6th and 7th respondents and transferred them to NDLEA for further investigation.

“That investigation by the NDLEA revealed that the 1st to 5th respondents have compromised the whole operation and were involved in the importation, trafficking, and dealing and also tampered with the recovered cocaine.

“That the 1st to 5th respondents have volunteered their statements upon preliminary investigation, which has shown complicity in the case. Copies of statements are hereby attached and marked Annexure NDLEA 4,5,6,7,8, & 9 respectively.

“That the investigation will take some time as there are complicated dimensions of the case that require follow-up and unravelling. That the investigation is likely to extend to foreign countries, where some people linked to this trans-national drug trafficking activities reside.

“That it is in line with the above that the Applicant is applying to the Honourable Court for a period of 14 days in the first instance to detain the respondents to enable it carry out its investigation successfully.”

In her ruling, Justice Zainab Dimka Abubakar granted the NDLEA’s prayer and directed that the agency should at the expiration of the 14 days detention order either seek an extension, file a charge against the suspects or arraign them before the court.

Kyari and the four other police officers were arrested and handed over to NDLEA on Monday 14th February by police authorities, five hours after the agency had declared him wanted in connection with the drug deal.
