APC Convention: Northern Christian Should Occupy Position Of Dep National Chairman North, Insists Coalition

A coalition of Christians of northern extraction in All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday asked that the position of the Deputy National Chairman, North of the party should be left to a Northern Christian to occupy.

The Coalition stated this in a communique issued at the end of the expanded meeting of its executive committee and some select stakeholders. The Communique was signed by Chairman, Communique Drafting Committee, Prof. Doknan Sheni and Senator John Danboyi.

The group had in recent time been clamouring for religious consideration in sharing of positions in the party National Working Committee ahead of the national convention.

The APC National Convention comes up on 25th March 2022, where a new leadership that will direct the affairs of the party is expected to emerge.

The coalition while demanding adherence to the party’s procedures in the election of its national officers, they argued that such zoning considerations would help foster national unity.

The coalition stated: “Following the reports that a consensus candidate is recommended for geopolitical zone; The executive Committee and some critical adoption at the forthcoming National convention of our great party, APC, stakeholders of APC Christians in the 19 Northern States met on 7th the position of Deputy National Chairman (North) to the North-East based on the recommendation of the zoning committee, decided as follows:

“To congratulate Mr President and the entire APC family on the forthcoming National Convention.

“Further to the resolution contained in our communique of 13th February calling for religious balance and all-inclusiveness in
the leadership of the party, we recommend a Christian be Chairman (North) in the forthcoming National Convention.”

Nigeria’s 2023 Presidential Election Important To World – South Korean Envoy

The Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Nigeria, Kim Young-Chae, has asked Nigerians to ensure that the country’s 2023 presidential election is free and fair.

He noted that the entire world is monitoring the electoral process in Nigeria and desirous of the success of the 2023 General Election, for the country occupies an important position.

Kim, while speaking during a press conference in Abuja to highlight activities of the embassy in the past year, said he was aware the presidential election will hold early next year.

He added that the election was very important to the Nigerian Government, to the Nigerian people and to the world as well.

Nigeria, the Republic of Korea envoy further said, is the biggest democracy and the largest economy in Africa, “so, Nigeria means a lot, not only to this region, but globally. So, we want to see the election process, first should be peaceful; peaceful without violence. It should be free and fair and it should be transparent,” Kim said.

Kim further said the media have the responsibility to guide the government and the people towards a direction of peaceful, free, fair and transparent elections.

He added that: “It is very important and I hope that it will happen, the democratic tradition from 1999. Nigeria has been a democratic country. So, democratic practise, rules, I think are deeply established.

“Like Korea, in the next election, we should respect the result and cooperate with the new president.”

He said despite the debilitating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Republic of Korea and Nigeria achieved a lot.

In the area of economic cooperation, he recalled the three years legal dispute regarding a shipyard in Lagos, near Apapa Port, between Samsung and LADOL, a Nigerian company.

Kim however said both parties, with the intervention of the Federal Government, have agreed to settle the dispute.
He also said it was expected that the ship yard will be in full operation this year and it is expected to employ more Nigerian engineers.

Kim equally said when fully operational, the ship yard intended to hire up to 3000 Nigerian engineers.

“It is quite a huge boost for Nigerian job creation. And of course, if their activities increased, they will pay more tax, more fees, et cetera. So, it is good for the Nigerian economy and of course, it is good for Korean company. It is one of the good achievements of our embassy as we also helped to mediate between Samsung and LADOL.”

Another major achievement mentioned by Kim was the commissioning of NLNG Train 7 Gas Plant by President Muhammadu Buhari involving Daewoo, a South korean company in order to boost Nigeria’s gas production.

In the area of political affairs, Kim recalled the joint bilateral commission that took place in South  korea whereby the Minister of State, Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Zubairu Dada, visited South to Korea and met his counterpart.

He also said 30 Nigerian government officials and some companies such as BUA, Oando, LADOL, amongst others, visited South Korea and met their counterparts on how to further the bilateral relations between South Korea and Nigeria.

Other areas listed by Kim included culture where both countries signed a memorandum of understanding; and exchanges in defence cooperation.

APC’s Zoning Arrangement Unjust to Southeast, Deepens Alienation, Say IPN

The Indigenous People of Nigeria ( IPN) has risen in condemnation of the zoning arrangements for political offices of the All Progressives Congress (APC) describing it as unjust to the people of the Southeast geopolitical zone and a danger to the unity of the country.

The group lamented that the zoning of political offices as released recently by the APC Caretaker Committee Chairman, Sani Bello, has further deepened alienation of the Southeast geopolitical zone from the rest of Nigeria.

IPN further expressed regret that the APC despite call to adopt a zoning arrangement that is favorable and acceptable to Nigeria, chose to do otherwise.

Convener of the group, Nazi Nnamdi Iroegbu, alongside some other members of the group made their position known during a press conference in Abuja.

“Going by the zoning arrangement made public by the APC Caretaker Committee Chairman, Sani Bello, the position of National Chairman is zoned to the North Central, Deputy Chairman North, to the Northwest, Deputy Chairman South to South East, and National Secretary to South West.

“We observe that this zoning arrangement of political positions under the ruling APC is unjust to a section of the country, specifically, the Southeast. We view it disheartening that the APC is toying with the unity and oneness of Nigeria.

“The view earlier expressed by APC was that the North and South swerved positions , such that all positions initially held by the North automatically go to the South and vice versa.

“However, it is apparent that while the South West held the first chairmanship position of the party, Vice President and Speakership positions, and the North East Secretary and Senate President, members of the party from the South East are treated with disdain, giving the impression that they do not belong to the party”, Iroegbu said.

They went further to state that the manifold imbalance clearly manifest that the APC does not care about Nigeria’s unity, adding that the development is very dangerous and portends danger to Nigeria’s corporate existence.

“Needless to say that this is an unjust treatment so provocative and vindictive that immediate redress is required. Failure on the part of APC to correct the wrong treatment amounts to deepening the South East alienation and further threatening the corporate existence of Nigeria.

“IPN is not unaware that Nigeria, under the watch of APC, has been in terrible disarray; and the Party cannot pretend to show comfort in this sad state by not doing anything to unite the people of Nigeria.

“We the Indigenous People therefore frown seriously against this, and urge the party to take necessary steps towards the correction before the Convention.

IPN calls on well meaning Nigerians, particularly, leaders of Southeast in APC, to reject in its entirety the proposed zoning formular as made by the Acting Caretaker Chairman, and immediately commence engagement to rectify it so as to bring sense of belonging to Nigerians from the Southeast”, Iroegbu noted.

To remedy the situation, the group demands that the position of National Secretary be zoned to the Southeast, just as PDP has done.

“We also expect that the party will go further to ensure that the next presidential candidate of the APC should come from the Southeast in the Spirit of Justice, equity and fairness.

“Our position can be excused by the assumption that it will amount to an overburden for a South East that has the zoning of presidency to still share equally with other zones. Otherwise our position is cemented by a recent statement credited to our elder statesman, the former President Olusegun Obasanjo that unless due care is taken to address all agitations, Nigeria may cease to exist beyond 2023”, he said.

The Republic of Korea has called on Nigeria to fulfill her commitments in time, and support the set objectives of the US$13 million Digital Governance Programme.

Speaking during the recently conducted two-week pre-kick-off survey for the project titled Project for Building Foundations Towards Digital Governance in Nigeria (2021~2026), the KOICA Nigeria Country Director, Mr. Sungil Son said engagements with these government stakeholders emphasized on the need to have all commitments from the Nigerian-government side are fulfilled in a timely manner and also called for their continued support in the attainment of set objectives for the project.

The Republic of Korea through its grant aid agency, Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Office in Nigeria in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy (FMCDE) recently conducted a 2-week pre-kick-off survey for the project titled Project for Building Foundations Towards Digital Governance in Nigeria (2021~2026).

The project is a fully funded grant aid project worth 13 million US Dollars between the Government of the Republic of Korea through KOICA and the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria through FMCDE, with established project agreement signed between both parties in August 2021.

The project is expected to enhance Nigeria’s eGovernment implementation system through the update of the current Nigeria’s eGovernment Master Plan (NeGMP), upgrade of Nigeria’s Enterprise Architecture and development of a 10-year eGovernment Implementation Plan.

Other objectives of the project includes improvement in competencies for eGovernment service delivery through capacity building programs designed for policy makers and technical officers at both federal and state levels of government, enhancement of the quality of government digital services through the activation of the Government Service Portal www.services.gov.ng and create increased access for NIN enrolment through the establishment of additional NIN enrolment units.

A statement by KOICA on Wednesday said during the survey, an initial 3-member Project Management Consultant (PMC) team led by the Project Manager, Prof. Hung-Kook Park from Sangmyung University and KOICA Nigeria Country Director, Mr. Sungil Son had detailed technical and high-level engagements with representatives of key project stakeholders namely; Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy (FMCDE), National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Galaxy Backbone (GBB), National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), United Nations Children’s Education Fund (UNICEF), and National Population Commission (NPC).

A major highlight of the survey activity was the hosting of the wrap-up meeting with project stakeholders at the eGovernment Training Centre (eGTC) in Abuja. The wrap-up meeting provided the opportunity for the PMC to deliver to the representative of project stakeholders, the outcome of the survey and next steps for project implementation.

An official project kick-off ceremony signifying the commencement of project implementation activities is scheduled for May 2022.

Youth Group Tells Buhari To Sack NNPC, NMDPRA Heads Over Contaminated, Endless Fuel Scarcity

President Muhammadu Buhari has been asked by a civil advocacy group, the Youth Arise for Undiluted Leadership and Development Initiative to “replace” the heads of Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Agency (NMDPRA) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) over the lingering scarcity of petroleum products in the country.

The group, which made the call on Thursday, said that the apology tendered by the leadership of the NNPC and the other agencies was not enough because it would not restore the damages done to the vehicles and machines occasioned by the contaminated fuel brought into the country by the NNPC and without the detection of relevant regulatory agencies.

Speaking at a news conference in Abuja on Thursday, National Coordinator of the group, Comrade Lucky Akharame, traced the current unending fuel to the importation of contaminated petroleum products by the NNPC, which according to him has brought untoward misery and agony upon Nigerians.

Comrade Akharame told journalists that the NNPC cannot absolved itself from blame because under the Petroleum Industry Act, it is the sole importer of Petroleum Products into Nigeria.

The group further indicted agencies such as the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON), of complicity

While calling on the Minister of State, Petroleum, Timipre Sylva; the GMD of NNPC and CEO of NMDPRA to present to the public the finding of their investigations into the importation of adulterated petroleum products, the group called on President Muhammadu Buhari to “step in now and replace the heads of the NMDPRA and the NNPC”.

Akharame claimed that “using NNPC Pensioners as Regulators in a sector where NNPC itself operates as a behemoth, cannot possibly bode well for Nigeria.

“It is not in the best interest of the Nigerian public. It negates the spirit of the PIA.

“The conflicts of interests and the connivance of the two organizations are apparent. A regulator should be firm, proactive, assiduous, and protective of public interest. It is not the case with the NMDPRA.

The NMDPRA CEO presents the organization as subservient to players in its industry, novice and completely incompetent”.

They further called on the president to set up an Independent Panel of Inquiry into the circumstances that surrounded the importation of the contaminated petroleum products into the country by the NNPC and its contractors.

Petitioner Seeks Compensation Of N10M For Alleged Arbitrary Arrest By Police

A petitioner, Nnaemeka Orjiakor has demanded a compensation of N10 million from the police for alleged arbitrary arrest, detention and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment in 2019.

Orjiakor made this demand on Wednesday at the Independent Investigative Panel on human rights violations by the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and other police units in Abuja.

He pleaded with the panel to order N10m compensation in his favour, alleging that SARS officers led by one Mohammed Elbow Awal arrested him on the 8th February 2019 from his shop, handcuffed him, paraded him around Wuse market before bundling him into their vehicle, and took him to the SARS office in Area 3, Garki where he was beaten and detained for six days before he was released.

Nnaemeka, also during his narration before the panel presided over by Dr. Garba Tetengi, who stood in for the Chairman, Justice Suleiman Galadima(rtd), said that in 2006 he rented a shop from a lady in Wuse market, but when he wasn’t making enough sales had to sublet part of the shop to a third party so that he can make enough to pay the rent on the shop and boost his business.

He added that unknown to him, when the rent on the shop expired the third party in the lease contract went behind his back and paid the rent in full so as to be the sole occupant of the shop and further invited the police that he (Nnaemeka) was an illegal occupant of the shop.

Continuing in his narration, he said with the intervention of the police the matter was taken to court where trial had commenced, only for SARS personnel to arrest him on the morning of 24th December 2018 on the allegation that the owner of the shop is claiming that he wanted to sell the shop, and he was subsequently taken away but for the intervention of his wife who got a lawyer to get him reprieve.

He said it was the intervention of the lawyer who called the police and informed them the matter was still in court that got him released.

He said during another arrest on the 8th February 2022 that he was subjected to torture and degrading treatment.

The matter was adjourned to 22nd March for the continuation of hearing and defence.

In another development, the panel has ordered police to release all properties seized from officer of Nigerian merchant navy coast guard, while police alleges that the above-named organisation has no law to operate.

The Independent Investigative Panel on human rights violations by the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and other police units in Abuja, on Tuesday, ordered the Nigeria Police to release all 21 items including 4 Mistubishi L300 bus, two speed boats, passports, and other valuable documents of Commodore Allen Edema of the Nigerian Merchant Navy Coast Guard they seized.

The panel gave this order following the plea of Commodore Allen Edema that the police allegedly asked him to pay N600,000 before his properties will be released to him.

At the first hearing of the petition, Edema alleged that in 2008 the Nigeria Navy in a joint operation with the police, invaded his head office, arrested him, and seized his properties in Lagos. Since his release, the police has refused to hand over his properties to him despite orders from the court.

Under cross-examination, one of the respondents DSP Azuka Oboni who was led by Fidelis Ogwobe informed the panel that in 2008, officers of the Nigerian Navy arrested Commodore Edema and seven others and were brought to the FCT Command.

The Nigerian Navy alleged that Commodore Edema and others were impersonating the Nigerian Navy and also wearing their uniform, tempering with Naval activities at waterways and having illegal possession of naval equipment.

DSP Azuka also stated he was the IPO assigned to investigate the allegations. He wrote to the National Assembly to inquire about the operations of the organizations. From their response it was discovered that there was no law backing their existence, meaning the Nigerian Merchant Navy Coast Guard was operating illegally.

Thereafter, they were charged to court without bail being granted. DSP Azuka disclosed to the panel that Commodore Edema jumped bail by not showing up at the court for more than three times.

Under cross-examination, Counsel to the Police, Fidelis Ogwobe, asked Lawrence Ibiam and Chika Okereke, both lieutenants and members of the organisation ,if they were aware that the organisation was operating illegally.

Chika answered in the affirmative that the organisation has been proscribed this led to the closing of the head office in Lagos and invasion of the training school in Idah. On 28th April 2014, a joint task force of the Police, Navy, Army, and Civil Defence invaded the Nigerian Merchant Navy Coast Guard training center in Idah, Kogi State, and killed 11 persons during the invasion of the training center.

While Lawrence Ibiam disclosed that he joined the organisation in 2006 and he has been working without receiving salary. On further probe by the panel on how he survives he disclosed that he works as a security man at Watchman church.

Earlier, Fidelis Ogwobe had asked Commodore Edema to state which law or act mandates the organisation to operate. In which he responded that there is a bill before the house in regards to the establishment of the office.

The matter has been adjourned to 22nd March 2022. In the meantime Counsel to both parties have three days each to file their written addresses.

Askia Ogieh Points Path To Social Regeneration, As Delta Students Vow To Shun Cultism, Other Vices

Students of Delta state origin have agreed to shun cultism, internet fraud, examination malpractice and other social vices in the society.

The students took the decision at a one-day sensitisation and awareness programme tagged “Delta State Student’s Summit” with the theme “Role of Student Leaders Towards Curtailing the Menace of Cultism and Other Social Vices” held at the Mom Civic Centre, Warri on Wednesday.

The programme was organised by the Office of the Special Assistant to the Governor on Student’s Affairs in conjunction with the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC).

Chairman of the occasion and Managing Director of DESOPADEC, Bashorun Askia Ogieh in his remark said cultism had taken a frightening dimension in the society and called on student leaders to double efforts at re-orienting students on the need to shun cultism and other social vices in the country.

Represented Mrs. Ewomazino Duku, the DESOPADEC boss called on students to channel their youthful energy into providing solutions to contemporary societal challenges bedeviling the country.

According to Bashorun Ogieh, “there is no time in contemporary history where the issue of cultism and social vices has assumed a frightening dimension as in our current dispensation.

“When we least expected the scourge of this cryptic narrative to peter out with time and the buy-in of more enlightenment in knowledge, dynamic aspirations and frontier expansion, the menace of cultism appears to remain formidable, mellifluously enticing and a sudden vacuum filler of the ordeals imposed by a disorganized society.

“This has sadly degenerated into a sinister cartel to unleash heinous offenses such as rape, banditry, public harassment or bullying, homicide and ritual killing among a cocktail of offenses.

“The menace of cultism as it is turning out today among Nigerian youths has eaten deep and festered sorely into the social fabric of the national community such that social disturbance has become a familiar and normal situation in the country”

Ogieh remarked that cultism has increased degradation of values and made most of the Nigerian youths to lose focus on their academic pursuits and future.

He said what was more baffling is the degeneration of the menace to primary and secondary schools that has literarily trapped the impressionable hearts of our teens, where the tender hearts of chickens are now being reset to crow!

“Whatever the verdict being peddled and believed, the sad case of the unfortunate death of 11-year old Sylvester Oromoni remains a sore point in the imminent danger posed by cult-related menace in the society.

“This is where student leaders have a vital role of mind reorientation. As leaders of tomorrow, any student activism without a deliberate attempt to counsel their large followership and inspire them toward more noble and beneficial deeds in the society will dent their image as frontliners.

“This kind of approach can be taken across all tertiary institutions across the country to re-orientate the minds of students regarding curtailing the menacing and pervasive trend of cultism in the land.

“Students should be true activists in deed and in truth by changing the narrative in more valuable issues. Our students must be guided and inspired to be engaged in more noble deeds that keep them highly productive with their time.

“There is a legion of challenges confronting mankind that require solution thinkers – new alternatives to fossil fuel technology, space exploration, food security, weak economy, etc.

“The last time I checked, cultism does not belong to anything beneficial to society except to maim, cut short and destroy destinies.

“The onus lies in the hands of student leaders to lead their fellow students to the right path in the overall interest of society,” he stated.

Welcoming guests earlier, Special Assistant to the Governor on Student’s Affairs, Comrade Ezekiel Okoh said Nigerians were faced with enemies not armed with rifles nor nuclear weapons yet potent enough to wipe out an entire generation.

He said Nigerians were daily ambushed by enemies who have continued to cut lives short at their prime, shattered dreams, destroyed families and ruined careers.

“Our media is awash with anti-social vices which including cultism, drug abuse, Internet fraud, prostitution, examination malpractice and ritual killings.

“Today’s gathering aims at sensitising, re-orienting and kicking off the campaign for a new order that would raise a new breed of 21st century leaders who would chose the path of honour and integrity over social vices.

“We have an array of distinguished leaders of thought who were also confronted with these societal maladies but rather choose to follow the path of honour and dignity.

“As we draw from their wealth of experience, together we would build a stronger Delta free from all social vices,” Okoh stated.

The programme featured lectures presented by Chairman Delta State Vocational and Technical Education Board, Comrade Michael Akpobire and Frank Oseya Esq as well as a drama against cultism and other social vices by the Glory of God Music Drama Concept.

Dignitaries who attended the ceremony include Hon. Commissioner for Youths Development, Comrade Ifeanyi Egwunyenga represented by Olorogun Arthur Onokpite, Chairman PDP Patani LGA, Chief Godspower Asiuwhu, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media, Mr Nelson Egware.

Others include Special Assistant to the Governor on DESOPADEC Chief Prosper Edo, Rev’d Dr. Godwin Omegwe, Comrade Collins Ayabotu and representatives of the Commissioner of Police in the state.

If Every Govt Initiates YAGEP, Unemployment Will Be Brought To Barest Minimum, Says YAGEPreneur Ezediunor

By Gertrude Onyekachukwu-UTEH:

STEPHEN EZEDIUNOR was trained in the Youth Agricultural Entrepreneurs Programme (YAGEP) of the Delta State Government in the 2015/2016 cycle, having graduated from Federal Polytechnic, Oko where he obtained an HND in Business Administration. He was trained in poultry production and established at YAGEP Poultry Farm Cluster at Aboh-Ogwashi.

He is now a consultant in poultry business. He bought a car and acquired plots of land from the proceeds. He diversified to crop production and to building technology and drawing of building plans, a skill he acquired from his late father. His experience with YAGEP so far changed his earlier perception about government’s agricultural and social investment programmes. He tells his story after six years.

“When we started, I never knew it would be like this. I am one of those who criticized government’s programmes, but YAGEP changed my perception. I reluctantly picked the form, but was surprised I was invited for interview and, later, to Songhai Delta, Amukpe where we had our Orientation and Personal Effectiveness Training for a week.

“The establishment package was commendable for a start-up. Ever since, I have been in business. There was no time I was without stock. In fact, I have lost count of the number of cycles I have completed.

From my proceeds, I bought a car and acquired a hectare of land. I run consultancy services for other farmers. I also produce cassava, yam, vegetable and maize. The tubers of yam I harvest from my farm sustain my family all year round.

“I commend Governor Okowa for this laudable initiative. If every government is doing this, unemployment will be brought to the barest minimum, thereby reducing social vices among youths. I knew the pitiable state we were when we got enrolled into YAGEP. I know how well it is with every one of us in this cluster now.”

7 NDLEA officers injured during arrest of Taraba drug kingpin

Seven officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) were injured and one of the agency’s vehicle damaged in a face-off with some thugs during the arrest of a notorious Taraba drug dealer, Micha Godwin.

A statement on Wednesday by the anti-narcotics agency’s spokesman, Femi Babafemi said the operatives of NDLEA were at Nukai market, along Jalingo-Wukari road in the Taraba state capital, Jalingo, to arrest Micha Godwin, during which the anti-narcotic officers came under attack and at least seven of them were injured and one of their vehicles damaged.

Babafemi said despite the attack, the officers managed to arrest their target after recovering some quantities of illicit drugs from the suspect and thereafter retreated to take the wounded to the hospital for treatment.

He revealed that following intelligence, the operatives last Tuesday stormed the market at about 2.30pm to arrest the drug dealer and evacuate illicit substances in his warehouse, adding that soon after the arrest of Micha, miscreants mobilised from the community to attack the officers and vehicles with dangerous weapons.

He said reinforcement from the state Command of the agency and other security agencies was able to move in to rescue the operatives from the scene of attack.

According to him, in custody, the drug dealer said: “What happened today is bad because this is the second time I have been arrested and brought here but the first arrest was not like this. I don’t know who invited the boys who attacked the NDLEA officers”

Reacting to the incident, Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Retd) condemned the attack and directed immediate switch to new operational guidelines that will make officers and men well positioned to defend themselves adequately in the course of carrying out their duties.

Marwa warned that henceforth any obstruction or attack on NDLEA operatives in line of duty by suspects or their supporters would receive commensurate response.

House of Reps Resolves To Investigate Alleged Fraud, Illegalities At FERMA, As Elumelu Moves Motion

The House of Representatives on Tuesday unanimously resolved to investigate the alleged monumental fraud and illegalities going on at the Federal Road Maintenance Agency of Nigeria, FERMA.

The House resolution was sequel to a motion moved by the Minority Leader of the House, Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu at the plenary presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Idris Wase.

Moving the motion which was seconded by Rt. Hon. Samuel Babatunde Adejare, Elumelu noted that FERMA was established in 2002 with the mandate to efficiently and effectively monitor as well as the maintenance of all federal roads in Nigeria with an objective of keeping all the roads in good and safe condition at all time, under the supervision of the ministry of works.

He however expressed dismay that despite billions of naira being voted to FERMA yearly for purposes of road maintenance, federal roads across the country are nothing to write home about as most of them have become death traps, killing hundreds of Nigerians yearly as a result of poor conditions of the roads.

While stressing the critical role of FERMA to the wellbeing of the people in the area of ameliorate the sufferings of road users in the Country, Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu drew the attention of the House to the alleged serious corrupt practices by the management of the Federal Agency.

“Disturbed that the corrupt practices includes high handedness by the leadership of the agency, over inflation of contracts, award of non- existent contracts, massive splitting of jobs and flagrant disregard for procurement laws in the award of contracts and in most cases refusal to implement the budget in full thereby doing selective implementation of the budget.

“Further disturbed that there are allegations of intentional delays in awarding contracts for road repairs and construction several months after bidding had been completed and successful bidders have emerged thereby compounding problems for Nigeria road users and sabotaging the effort of the government.

“Worried that most of these contracts are alleged to have been cornered by the management for themselves and their cronies who abandon the site after collecting a reasonable percentage of advance payment of contract sum.

“Further worried that if these spate of unbridled pilfrey by top government officials is allowed to fester and unchecked it will not only drain the national purse but discredit the perceived fight against corruption by this government in the eyes of the international community, hence the need for this motion,” Elumelu stated in the motion.

Consequent upon the resolution, the House constituted an adhoc committee to investigate the activities of FERMA from 2019 till date and report back to the house within a period of 6 weeks.

BREAKING: PDP Submit Names To INEC To Replace Sacked Ebonyi Gov, Deputy

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it has submitted names of its nominees to replace the sacked Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi and his Deputy, Dr Eric Kelechi Igwe.

The National Chairman of the PDP, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, made the disclosure on Tuesday, during a world press conference at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja.

Senator Ayu revealed that the names of the nominees have been submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He said that the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) had endorsed the names of nominees to be sworn in as Governor and Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State.

Meanwhile, the names of the nominees are yet to be made known, just as Ayu has maintained that “we are not going to release the names immediately. But the names will soon be made available to the press”.

It could be recall a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, sacked Governor Umahi of Ebonyi State and his Deputy, Dr Eric Kelechi Igwe, following their defection from the PDP to the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).

How & Why Gov. Umahi, Deputy Were Sacked:

The court, in a judgement that was delivered by Justice Inyang Ekwo, held that the total number of 393, 042 votes governor Umahi secured during the March 9, 2019 governorship election in Ebonyi state, belonged to the PDP and same could not be legally transferred to the APC.

According to the court, having defected to the APC, both Umahi and his deputy, not only jettisoned the PDP, but also the votes that belonged to it.

It held that going by the outcome of the governorship election, the office of the governor and deputy governor in Ebonyi state, “belong to the Plaintiff and no other political party”.

“There is no constitutional provision that made the ballot transferrable from one party to the other”.

It held that the PDP is bound to retain the votes and mandate that was given to it by electorates in Ebonyi state, as both governor Umahi and his Deputy could not validly transfer same to APC.

The court, therefore, ordered both Umahi and Igwe to immediately vacate their positions.

It ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to immediately receive from the PDP, names of persons to replace Umahi and his Deputy, or in the alternative, conduct a fresh gubernatorial election in Ebonyi state in line with section 177(c) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

Petitioner Demands N115 Million Compensation For Police Brutality

A complainant, Michael Uzoagba has demanded a compensation of N115 million from Nigerian Police for his alleged unlawful arrest, detention and property seizure in 2018.

Uzoagba, made a plead for the compensation on Tuesday at the Independent Investigation Panel on Human Rights Violations by the defunct SARS and other units of the Nigerian Police sitting in Abuja.

The petitioner who was led in his testimonies by his counsel, Ohiovor Maria of the Legal Aids Council of Nigeria informed the panel that his wares including refrigerator, televisions sets, electric iron etc were on two occasions carted away by the Police in Bwari, Federal Capital Territory.

He said he wants compensation against the Police as follows; N100 million for general damages, N10 million for unlawful arrest and detention for three days and N5 million for malicious prosecution.

In his narration before the panel presided over by Dr.Garba Tetengi, who stood in for the Chairman, Justice Suleiman Galadima (rtd), Uzoagba told the panel that on the fateful day, while he was in his shop, he saw five policemen asking him the whereabouts of his son.

According to him, he replied the police team that he did not know where his son was at that time, only for them to start picking his electronics and electrical appliances he displayed in his shop for sale and packing them into their own standby vehicle.

Before moving the said items into the Police vehicle, he told the panel that Police team made a call presumably to the DPO of Bwari Police station and thereafter, they went ahead with the removal of the electrical appliances. He said he queried the operation and no answer was given to him to justify the action.

He said apparently not knowing what to do to recover the items from the Police, he informed the panel that he went to Radio House and lodged a complaint with respect to the said seizure of his properties by the Police.

He lamented that despite the intervention by the Radio House, the Police have allegedly refused to release the said goods but rather instituted a court case against him for daring to take the Police to the Radio House.

Asked by the Acting Chairman, Tetengi to state the value of the entire property allegedly taken by the Police and what he wants the panel to do for him in the circumstance, the petitioner put the value at over N10 million and that he wants the panel to help him and recover the said items from the Police.

In their response, the Police represented in the matter by Fidelis Ogwobe told the panel that he needed more time to contact the police officers listed as respondents in the case to enable him put up a defense for the Police.

Respondents in the petition are Makinde Ola, DPO Bwari Police station FCT, Shunku Terhermber, Bwari Police station FCT, Commissioner of Police FCT and Inspector General of Police.

The case was adjourned till 21st March, 2022 for cross-examination of the petitioner.

Procurement Acts: BPP Caught in NIPOST Certification Scandal

Reports on Monday indicated that Staff of the Nigerian Postal Service, NIPOST may be out for a showdown with the management over what some of the staff describes as tribal sentiment and blind interest under Dr. Adebayo Adewusi led management.

The staff also faulted the role of Bureau of Public Procurement, BPP in awarding a certificate to a staff of the organisation, which according to them did not have a background in procurement, adding that by the procurement act, he was not supposed to attend such a course or obtain a certificate to that effect.

“They (Management) have flouted the procurement acts by awarding procurement certification to staff without procurement background in the 2021 procurement conversion examination.” A source in the organisation told journalists.

Also the staff in a petition written to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of Federation insists that, the staff, a 54 year old Mr. Samuel Oluwasegun Sangotayo, which was on the BPP list number 118 with Examination number BPP/PCC/NOV/2021/142 was co-opted into the procurement department of NIPOST with fraudulent intention as he has no background in procurement before the NIPOST Management move against the procurement acts and rules of the civil service to appoint him as Director of Procurement.

The petition in part reads: “From all indications NIPOST has co-opted the BPP into its fold of agencies that abuse and flagrantly disregard extant rules, guidelines/procedures. This is manifested in the impunity by NIPOST management in planting a 54 years old substantive Deputy Director( Legal) on GL 16, by name Mr. Samuel Oluwasegun Sagontayo, in the procurement department, and allowing him to attend Procurement conversation course in 2021.

“This is against the procurement act. To Staff amazement the BPP went ahead to issue Certificate to this unworthy candidate despite petition. Mr. Samuel Oluwassegun is number 118 on the BPP Certification lists. This is contrary to a circular from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, dated 14th June, 2017 with reference No. 59780/S.1/1.1/117 which states that Officers from other cadres in civil service are prohibited from procurement functions where career procurement Officers are available.

“Specifically, the BPP mandatory conversation training guidelines for 2021 as obtained from its website clearly indicated that; 2(b) Current cadre and grade level (Nominees should not be above GL 15 or equivalent). Why was Mr. S. O. Sagontayo, who has been on GL.16 since January 2018, allowed to take part in the November 2021 conversion exercise? Has the rules changed? 3(e) Nominees who are more than 50years of age or have less than 5years in service are not qualified to apply. Here the rule was violated because Mr. S.O Sagontayo is 54 year of age.”

According to staff of NIPOST the organization has moved from bad to worse since the coming on board of Dr. Ismail Adewusi, who took over the administration of NIPOST in December 2019.

“Under him (Dr. Ismail Adewusi) management have been operating with total disregard to the laid down rules and procedures obtainable in civil service. The provision of a circular from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, dated 14th June, 2017 with reference No. 59780/S.1/1.1/117 states that Officers from other cadres in civil service are prohibited from procurement functions where career procurement Officers are available.

“On the contrary, a case in hand is the drafting of a non-career officer, a deputy director from the legal department to succeed the retired Director, while there are two (2) senior certified procurement officers with total disregard to the above cited circular.” The source said

Attempt to speak to the Director Corporate Communication; Mr. Frank Alao did not yield result as his phone is not reachable.

UK Holds Workshops For SARCS

-From Our Special CORRESPONDENT:

United Kingdom government has held training workshops for all 33 Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs) and their main stakeholders in Nigeria.

The workshops which held between 28 February and 4 March, were developed to offer critical support to SARCs who provide vital assistance and forensic and medical services to children, young people, women, and men who have been sexually abused, assaulted or raped. SARCs also support police and prosecution responses to crimes of sexual violence, abuse and exploitation.

A signed statement by the Press & Public Affairs Officer, Comms Lead, Prosperity and Economic Development, Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, Ndidiamaka Eze said 33 SARC managers and stakeholders at both state and federal level participated in the workshops. This included officials from Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Women’s Affairs, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Ministry of Health, the Nigerian Police Force, as well as staff from hospitals. NGOs including Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC), International Federation of Women Lawyers, Nigeria (FIDA), Nigerian Civil Defence Corps, and UN Women also joined the workshops.

She said: “The workshops were organised by the Consular Section of the British High Commission in Abuja (BHC) and the British Deputy High Commission in Lagos (DBHC). They were paid for through the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development (FCDO’s) Consular Project Fund (CPF), in collaboration with the British Council, who supported the BHC in the preparation of these workshops. The workshops were delivered by visiting field experts, Alison Eaton, a senior retired UK Police Officer and International Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) expert, and Dr Isabelle Kerr, former Centre Manager of Glasgow & Clyde Rape Crisis in Scotland. The workshops complemented the work being done through the EU Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) and Managing Conflict (MCN) programmes implemented by the British Council.”

She disclosed that during the workshops, Alison Eaton and Dr Isabelle Kerr shared outcomes from findings from their recently completed SARCs baseline assessments, coordinated by Consular Section to map SARC services across Nigeria with the aim of improving practice, increasing resources and ensuring improved access to SARCs for survivors across the country. The presenters facilitated the discussion and consultation among SARCs and stakeholders to identify areas of good practice, highlight challenges and gaps in service with a view to standardise practice across the country.

During the workshops, Dr Isabelle Kerr said: “The level of commitment and passion shown by managers and staff within SARCs is enormous and shows how the grit and determination of those who believe in survivor justice and wellbeing can achieve so much. State and government investment in policy and strategic direction for this work is crucial but we must not forget or ignore the frontline services that are being delivered by small, dedicated teams under sometimes challenging and under-resourced conditions. Both Alison and I were honoured to be asked to contribute our years of experience to this work.”

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing who quoted to have said:
“It is incredibly encouraging to see how much work is being done to provide accessible services to survivors of rape and Sexual and Gender Based Violence in Nigeria. We were delighted to welcome Alison Eaton and Dr Kerr from the UK to build on this. Thank you to the British Council for the support they have offered to help to set up these workshops for us.

“Preventing sexual violence is a really important issue for me and for the UK government. The UK Foreign Secretary, Liz Truss, has put this at the absolute top of her priorities. And I am mandated to really engage and lean in on this to support efforts to ensure that all women are given a genuine chance to realise their potential and gain the support they need to do so.”

These workshops organised by the BHC and funded by the FCDO will complement the current support that the British Council are providing to SARCs through their The Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) programme and their Managing Conflict in Nigeria (MCN) programmes. RoLAC is concluding a 7-month intervention that will feed into the design of the European Union’s continued support to SARCs under RoLAC’s successor. Cocaine Deal: Abba Kyari, Others Arraigned In Court As 2 Co-Defendants Plead Guilty

-From Our Special CORRESPONDENT:

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA on Monday arraigned the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari and six others before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court 8, Abuja, on an eight count criminal charge bordering on conspiracy and drug trafficking.

When the charge in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CR/57/2022, was read to the accused, DCP Abba Kyari; ACP Sunday Ubia; ASP James Bawa; Inspector Simon Agirigba; Inspector John Nuhu, who are all suspended police officers, pleaded not guilty while two other co-defendants Chibunna Umeibe and Emeka Ezenwanne pleaded guilty.

In the charge, NDLEA accused Kyari and the four other police officers of conspiracy, obstruction, and dealing in cocaine worth 17.55 kilogrammes. They were also accused of tampering with 21.25k kilogrammes of cocaine unlawfully.

The accused had arrived the Federal High Court premises under heavy security by NDLEA Strike Force officers. While the five-member prosecution team was led by the agency’s Director of Prosecution and Legal Services, Sunday Joseph, while Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN led 13 other lawyers to represent Kyari and Ubia. ASP James Bawa had Michael Mbanefo and Mariam Osene as defence counsel while M.Y Chiara and two others represented Agirigba and Nuhu, with EU Okenyi appearing for Umeibe and Ezenwanne.

After the accused took their pleas, Chief Agabi told the court that he had filed bail applications for the 1st and 2nd defendants since Tuesday 1st March 2022, a bid the prosecution opposed with a counter application. Justice Nwite in his remarks said he was yet to get the prosecution’s counter application and thereafter adjourned further hearing on bail to Monday 14th March.

The defence counsel urged the trial judge to remand the defendants in NDLEA custody instead of the Nigerian Correctional Centre, a request the prosecution said would not be objected on the ground that the defendants will be responsible for their own upkeep.

The defence counsel expressed fear that the review of facts against the 6th and 7th defendants who pleaded guilty will prejudice the case and therefore urged that the court put the review on hold pending the conclusion of the trial of the 1st to 5th defendants.

The NDLEA prosecution counsel however opposed the plea citing an existing judgment. He urged that the court should proceed with the sentencing of the 6th and 7th defendants since they had pleaded guilty adding that it will be totally unfair to keep them in prison pending the trial of the 1st to 5th defendants.

In all, five bail applications were filed for the 1st to the 5th defendants while the 8th defendant who is also a police officer is still at large. Justice Nwite adjourned the case to 28th of March 2022 for a review of facts and hearing of the case while all respondents are to be remanded in NDLEA facility pending the hearing of the bail application next Monday.

-From Our Special CORRESPONDENT:

A petitioner, Otomerhe Onaodowan, on Monday told the Independent Investigative Panel on human rights violations by the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and other police units in Abuja, how her two sons Collins Onaodowan and Owen Onaodowan were extra-judicially killed by the police, in Delta, in 2010.

The complainant, an elderly woman, informed the panel that her two sons went to watch premier league at Duro Stores, while watching in the company of other spectators, armed robbers invaded the store and shot one of the spectators, a soldier in the foot.

Testifying before Dr Garba Tetengi, who stood in for the Chairman, she said that while everyone ran for safety, the owner of Duro Stores held on to her two boys and claimed that they were part of the armed robbery gang, while the second soldier present called the police and the boys were whisked away to Ekpan Police Station.

Immediately the news got to her about their arrest she and their father went to the police station where they were being detained, though they were denied entry on the account that it was late and was advised to come back the next day.

Otomerhre said when she visited the police station the next day, she saw her children in a degrading and inhuman condition, she noted that her two boys one a university undergraduate and the other a corper with the National Youth Service Corp “were stripped naked and lying on the floor”.

On her third visit to Ekpan Police Station, the family was informed about the death of the two boys “ the DPO showed my husband the pictures of the bodies of my children, but their corpse has not been released to the family till date.”

Under cross-examination, Counsel to respondents, Malik Taiwo, asked if there were any steps she took to find out what led to the death of her children. At this point, she informed the panel that after the death of her children, she went to National Human Rights Commission, thereafter the case was charged to court.

In court, at the end of the trial, the case was stuck out due to lack of evidence.

Taiwo further sought to know why the court judgement was not filed alongside the petition before the panel.

The panel ruled that the certified true copies of the judgement be presented before the panel at the adjourned date.

The matter was adjourned to 21st March 2022, for a continuation of hearing and defence.

FG Moves To Restore 4 Million Degraded Forest

From Mike SOGBOLA/ Abuja-Nigeria:

The Federal Government said it will soon move to restore 4 million hectares of degraded land forest and landscape, which is inline with its commitment to the Africa Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative, (AFR100).

It however said that this would only be achievable through stakeholders’ collaboration that would create an enabling environment for the exchange of information relating to successful implementation through its various engagements.

The Minister of State for Environment, Sharon Ikeazor, disclosed this at the Formal Inauguration of the AFR100 National Stakeholders Platform on Degraded Forest and Landscape Restoration in Nigeria, held in Abuja on Thursday.

Ikeazor said the AFR100 would accelerate achievement of food security, increase climate change resilience and mitigation as well as combat rural poverty.

The Minister added that: “This will not only contribute to the UN decade on ecosystem restoration but will also deliver on the objectivities of the three global Multilateral Environmental Agreements, that is the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, UNFCCC, United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, UNCCD and the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, UNCBD.”

She noted that landscape restoration is not limited to planting trees, it is about restoring the whole landscape and involves several sectors such as agriculture, livestock, forest and the environment, town planning and housing, water and sanitation, energy, tourism and land use planning.

She said that “the platform would serve as a framework for exchange of experience, sharing of results and dissemination of information on the restoration of forest and degraded landscapes in Nigeria to track and monitor progress thereby subscribing to the Bonn challenge barometer.”

She added that: “After more than four years since Nigeria joined the AFR100 imitative, the government through the Federal Ministry of Environment with the Department of Desertification, Land Degradation and Drought Management as the focal department for the AFR100 initiative is here to inaugurate the AFR100 national stakeholder’s platform to foster collaboration among MDA’S public and private Oragnisation, CBO’s, NGO’s, as this would enhance coordination of restoration activities and strengthen partnership.”

She claimed that collective commitment towards sustainable land management practices would help conserve and restore the Nigeria environment and make the country vulnerable to climate change.
Ikeazor said each year, 13 billion hectares of forest are lost to land conversion for agriculture uses such as pasture and cropland.

She lamented that: “This has detrimental effects on regional water availability, soil fertility, biodiversity, and climate change. More than 70% of all natural ecosystems have been transformed to produce food and animal, illegal logging is threatening forest worldwide, home to several indigenous people, communities and wildlife.”

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Environment, Mr Hassan Musa, said the AFR100 stakeholder platform would create awareness, promote sustainable practice, and serve as frame work for the exchange of experience as well as sharing of results and dissemination of information on restoration activities in the country.
It would also present an opportunity for public and private sectors to demonstrate large scale of transformative action to restore degraded land.

He said; “A national stakeholder’s platform for forest Landscape Restoration was convinced to help harmonise and integrate various interventions on restoration in the country, to accelerate restoration practices towards achieving the commitments to the African Forest Initiative, AFR100 and the Bonn challenge.”

He also commended the development partners especially the United Nations Development Program UNDP for sponsoring this meeting to foster collaboration amongst stakeholders and hasten the restoration of degraded forest and landscapes.

AFR100 Regional Coordinator for West Africa, Dr Oluseynou Ndoye commended the Nigerian government for taking the decision to restore 4m hectares of degraded land forest and land by 2030, being the second largest engagement in West Africa.

He noted that exceeding the objective of the initial commitment, 33 technical partners and 12 financial partners support the initiative.
“The AFR100 Initiative responds to the Africa Union mandate to restore 100million hectares of degraded forest and land by 2030. It is a contribution to Agenda 2063 which is the African continents strategic framework for an inclusive and sustainable development, ” Dr Ndoye added.

The Africa Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative, AFR100 is a country led effort to restore 100m hectares of forest and degraded landscape across Africa by 2030, to date 32 countries have pledged to restore 128million hectares thus surpassing the commitment goal.
It is a pan Africa initiative aimed at restoring 100m hectares of degraded forest and land by the year 2030.

Speaking to journalist on the reason behind the rescheduling of the flight, Ambassador Bolaji Akinyemi, the leader of the Nigeria’s delegation to Poland to evacuate the Nigerians, said the airport authority did not allowed the flight to be boarded because of reason having to doing with overshooting the time allotted for the flight

Akinyemi told journalists on Tuesday in Poland that: “The reality is that the flight has been rescheduled for tomorrow, and then main reason is because of delay during the checking in, they have to gather them together from different hotels and by the time they would be ready after the checking in, the crew that has been waiting since 9am had overshot the time allotted to them because they have a duty hour which is allocated to them, they have waited from 9-2pm and that means they have already waited five hours and they are going to have nine hours flight and that was already more than what is the standard.”

He added that: “The authority of the airport said they won’t allow us to board, this is the reality and then we have to come down.

“Arrangement has been made to ensure that we all stay together in the same hotel and we leave very early tomorrow; 4am we hit the bus and then we can join the flight.”

ATTAHIRU JEGA: THE “LAMENTATION” OF AN UMPIRE

By Austen Akhagbeme

Just yesterday, the former ASUU President and former INEC Chairman, Prof Attahiru Jega, fired a familiar salvo, while speaking at the 2022 Workers’ political conference organised by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC in Abuja.

The former electoral umpire who supervised the 2011 and 2015 General elections in Nigeria seems to be disturbed about the continuous recklessness of governance by a few rogue elites who are pushing the nation into a trajectory of doom, gloom and total collapse.

While one may be tempted to dismiss Jega’s observation as one coming from a disfavoured and presently disadvantaged elite, it is equally pertinent to say that this time around, we must focus on the message rather than the messenger.

Is Nigeria truly governed by a “rabid and reckless band of elites” who are hell-bent on running the nation aground? Are we truly on the trajectory of extinction as a nation, vis-a-vis the existential challenges of insecurity, ethnic politics, skewed federalism and threatening youth unemployment bedevilling our land? And most importantly, can we be redeemed by a careful and painstakingly elected leadership come 2023 given the quality and type of aspirants we have seen so far?

Every day in Nigeria, events that seem to lay credence to these questions and assertions unfold right before our eyes. They are not far-fetched. For example, the ongoing fuel crisis and the lack of courage to call out those who imported the bad premium motor spirit into our shores is again, a pointer to how uncaring a government can be.

That the minister of petroleum is not on the ground while the nation groans in pain and productive man-hour are being wasted in long queues around fuel stations across the country, is another indication of a dumb leadership apparachik powered by a blind bureaucracy.

Now, can we confidently say that Prof Jega is right or wrong? Those who thinks that the erstwhile electoral umpire is wrong are actually economical with the truth. Their stand may be coloured by their personal perception of the persona behind the message. Let us throw away “trivialities” and call a spade its true name. And I think that is what Jega has done.

PUTTING PUTIN ON THE TOTEM POLE

0

If there’s anything you cannot take away from President Vladimir Putin of Russia, it is the spartan determination to win every test of resolve as he’s never the first to blink an eye.

Postulations and deluge of analysis by geopolitical pundits seem to suggest that Moscow may have a rethink as the West and its allies were threatening sanctions if she moves ahead with her plan to invade Ukraine.

As we speak, Russian troops and weapons had found their way into eastern Ukraine through the Russian borders as well as Belarus in the North and also Russian- annexed Crimea to the South; what seems like the beginning of a long war has begun.

But one of the biggest questions, not too many people are willing to ask dispassionately is: what does Putin want in clear, simple and unambiguous terms? Is this former KGB officer who served in East- Germany, merely ambitious based on a sympathetic resonance and a kindred spirit with the old Soviet Union or was he forced to defend himself from a possible future “invasion” by America as x-rayed by the too-close- for- comfort macabre dance of NATO around her neighbourhood?

Despite Vladimir Putin’s generally perceived and widely accepted stubborn and “recalcitrant” persona by the west and their sympathisers, we must dispassionately agree that no one in Putin’s shoes will allow a ‘brotherly’ neighbour like Ukraine to go the way of NATO, with it’s avowed and unfeigned disregard for everything Russia represents.

Those who are pushing Ukraine towards NATO are unfortunately being exonerated from this brouhaha while Moscow is being vilified and projected by Western propagandists as the unreasonable aggressor.

The move by Putin, to him, was strategic, timely and necessary as the best form of defence from a possible emasculation by a self-proclaimed lone superpower using a proximal advantage.

Above all, engaging Ukraine in a war while supporting breakaway enclaves like Donetsk and Donbass disqualifies Ukraine from joining NATO as no nation in such a crisis are allowed to. Especially when he knows that NATO does not have a reason to retaliate militarily on behalf of a non-member state like Ukraine, beyond the sanctions, propaganda and noise making.

Before we crucify Putin, let Capitalism and her superstructure be advised that Vladimir Putin is not alone. The animosity by the EU and their backer does not translate to Russia’s rejection by China and her allies. The earlier a workable truce is brokered and Ukraine is kept a pole apart from NATO, the better for world peace that we all yearn for in this emerging multipolar world.

Jets, Helicopters To Be Deployed To Combat Raging Infernos As NAF, FFS Partner

0

Jets and Helicopters are now to be deployed to combat raging infernos in the country as the Federal Fire Service (FFS) and the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) both agreed to deploy their tactical expertise in suppressing and stemming the tide of incessant fire outbreaks in the country.

The partnership was sealed on Wednesday when the acting Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Dr. Samson Karebo , who is bent on delivering on his mandate, led a delegation of senior firefighters on a courtesy visit to the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, at the headquarters of the Nigerian Air Force in Abuja

The FFS boss, said the the agreement is aimed at deploying aerial aircraft and other aerial resources to combat major fire outbreaks. He said these aircrafts are to be used in aerial command and control roles in fighting major fires, providing tactical coordination with commanders on the ground and other aircraft in the sky.

He explained that the move is to undo the obstacles of lack of access and proximity to affected areas , adding that it is also dangerous for firefighters to enter into some burning buildings to fight fire.

The acting CGF who expressed worry about the frequent fire disasters recorded in the country , which he said was affecting the nation’s economy negatively.

He said with him in the helm, the huge taxpayer’s funds that are annually allocated for firefighting by the federal government would be justified.

Karebo, who also promised not to only meet his obligations but to exceed expectations in the running of the affairs of the Federal Fire Service , said that highly mobile aircraft are positioned around the country to respond to all manner of fires, protect communities, public and commercial buildings as well as to support firefighters on the ground.

He said: “So it is not surprising that the Federal Fire Service is seeking to introduce new technologies against a threat that will only get worse due to climate change.

While explaining that under ideal conditions aircraft can slow a fire enough to allow ground based firefighters an opportunity to contain sections of the fire’s edge by constructing a fireline, the acting CG however noted that wrong winds or dense smoke can also make it impossible for aircraft to operate safely or effectively.

On his part, the Chief of Air Staff, promised to provide the Fire Service with all the necessary support to ensure the safety of Nigerian.

Amao, who revealed that the Nigerian Air force have adequate Aircrafts on ground stressed the need for an outright intensive training for both agencies as it relates to aerial fire fighting to boost effectiveness and an impressive result.

He said, as climate change heats up , alongside the possibility of man-made fire outbreaks, preparing ourselves for the fire storms that are sure to come is a step in the right direction.

It can be reported that to this effect, a committee has been set up to commence the processes of collaboration.
