ESTABLISHED beneficiaries of the Youth Agricultural Entrepreneurs Programme (YAGEP) in Fish Production in Delta State can now heave a sigh of relief, following recent government intervention to curtail flooding in some farms and boost the Enterprise.
The State Government, through the Delta State Job and Wealth Creation Bureau recently commenced the refurbishment of YAGEP Fish Farm Clusters in Ugbokodo-Okpe and Egbokodo-Itsekiri.
The Ugbokodo-Okpe and Egbokodo-Itsekiri YAGEP Fish Farm Clusters located in Okpe and Warri-South Local Government Areas respectively were established in the 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 YAGEP Cycles for over 200 beneficiaries of the Youth Agricultural Entrepreneurs Programme (YAGEP) who were trained and established in Fish Production.
Speaking with newsmen, Mr. Ari-Smart Awhinawhi, the Supervisor engaged by the Delta State Job and Wealth Creation Bureau to oversee the operations at the clusters, explained that the bureau was carrying out the repairs to enable the beneficiaries and their clients to have easy and diverse access to the ponds.
At Ugbokodo-Okpe, Mr. Awhinawhi stated that an elevated wooden walkway was being constructed there as part of the maintenance work to protect the dykes around the fish ponds from collapsing as a result of heavy traffic on them, noting that the raising of the dykes was completed last year.
“The farmers sometimes use wheel barrows which has long damaging effects on them. The Job Creation Bureau in its wisdom, decided to create a walkway to protect the dykes. This is to ease the pressure on the dykes with the hope that more will be provided in the future.
“The dykes here were raised and the damage due to the heavy traffic corrected. Apart from damaging the dykes, the heavy traffic caused compression of the dykes which caused heavy flooding. What the bureau has done was to raise the dykes above flooding levels last year. This year, the bureau approved the construction of walkways,“ he explained.
In the same vein, work was on-going at the YAGEP Fish Farm Cluster at Egbokodo-Itsekiri. According to the Farm Supervisor, a 2,500 feet wooden walkway was approved for construction in the cluster while 50 vulnerable ponds were marked for refurbishing in order to correct the damage caused by compression on the dykes.
“Two operations are taking place in this cluster, the construction of elevated walkways and the raising of dyke and internal refurbishment of 50 vulnerable ponds,” he pointed out.
While applauding the state government for establishing the fish farm clusters which he described as having the capacity to make Delta State sustainable in Fish Production, he appealed to the government to provide soft loans for youth farmers and to go into public private partnership with willing investors in fish feed production in order to bring down the high cost of fish feeds in the country.
Responding, one of the beneficiaries spotted at the cluster at Egbokodo-Itsekiri, Simon Ayorumume Ogbiye, appreciating the government for carrying out the repairs and providing the walkways, called for more follow-up and support package to sustain their passion for the enterprise.
“We are happy and the market women are happy about the walkways too. They call it expressway. We are hopeful that raising of the dykes will curb flooding and loss of fish during the raining season. We can now sleep peacefully without running helter-skelter. I call for regular follow-up and mentorship to sustain our passion for the business”, he declared.

SOUTHERN members of the House of Representatives have endorsed the resolution of Southern Governors demanding restructuring, true federalism, state police and ban on open grazing in the South.
The members in a statement signed by the Minority Leader in the House of Representatives Hon. Ndudi Elumelu and 19 other Southern Members of the House, commended their governors for their concern for the asphyxiation of economic activities in the Southern Nigeria resulting from the continued congestion in ports in Lagos and the gridlock on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.
They cautioned certain individuals kicking against such devolution of power and review of revenue control and allocation formula, to desist from their vested parochial interest and note that such reviews are the only way to stabilize our nation, engender regional or state productivity and healthy development at all levels.
The full text of Southern House of Representatives members’ position on the Southern Governors’ resolution reads:
Position of Southern House of Representatives Members on the Resolution of Southern Governors on Open Grazing, Devolution of Power, Others
The members of the House of Representatives from the 17 southern states of the federation, after due considerations, unanimously support the resolutions of the Southern Governors’ Forum on the demand for true federalism, restructuring as well as the worsening insecurity in the country, among others.
This position is in firm restatement of our insistence that our nation must exist and governed on the platform of democratic tenets of social justice, equity, fairness, mutual respect, true federalism, rule of law and constitutional order, and we are ready to deploy all legislative instruments at our disposal for actualization
Against this backdrop, the members of the House of Representatives from the South, without regard to any other affiliations, firmly support our governors on the immediate ban on open cattle grazing across the Southern Nigeria.
We hold that such is a sure step towards checking the infiltration of bandits, armed herders and terrorist elements which has heightened security challenges with escalated killings and bloody attacks on innocent citizens, while crippling social life, economic activities and food production in the region.
We therefore support the recommendation that the Federal Government should provide alternative and modern livestock management that does not constitute a security and economic challenge to the nation.
The platform of Southern members in the House of Representatives also support our governors’ restatement of the demand for true federalism through restructuring that will lead to the devolution of power, creation of state police, review of resource control and revenue allocation formula, as well as strict adherence to federal character principle in federal appointments in the shared interests of the federating states.
As lawmakers, we affirm that such is the only guaranteed way to ensure fairness, justice, equity to engender national stability, productivity and peaceful co-existence and we support an urgent national dialogue in that regard.
We caution certain individuals kicking against such devolution of power and review of revenue control and allocation formula, to desist from their vested parochial interest and note that such reviews are the only way to stabilize our nation engender regional or state productivity and healthy development at all levels.
Furthermore, our platform commends our governors for the concern for the asphyxiation of economic activities in the Southern Nigeria resulting from the continued congestion in ports in Lagos and the gridlock on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.
This challenge has led to loses in billions of naira to businesses and other economic activities in the industrial and commercial activities of not only in the Southern Nigeria but the nation at large.
We therefore firmly back the demand for the establishment and activation of other ports in other states of the federation, particularly in the south where such services are in very high demand.
As lawmaker, our platform assures of our readiness to deploy our legislative instruments to ensure speedy achievement of the reforms and constitutional amendments that will guarantee a restructuring towards the practice of true federalism in our country and we are rallying our colleagues from other parts of the country in this direction.
We urge all Nigerians to see the larger picture, ensure that all hands are on the deck to move our nation to the right direction.
Our platform applauds our governors for their patriotism and courage while commending Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State for hosting his colleagues in their quest for solutions at this critical time in our nation’s history.

On behalf of the Southern members in the House of Representatives
THE Governors of Southern States of the country on Tuesday, announced their resolution to ban open grazing and movement of cattle by foot across the region as part of measures to check incursion of armed herders and banditry.
The governors made this known in a communique at the end of their meeting in Asaba.
In the communiqué read by Chairman of Southern Governors Forum, Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, they said that prevailing insecurity in the country had presented severe security challenge such that citizens were unable to live normal lives, including pursuing productive activities.
The Forum stated that the precarious security situation in the country had become a threat to food supply, adding that the development and population growth had put pressure on available land and increased prospects of conflict between migrating herders and local populations in the South.
The governors called on the Federal Government to support willing States to develop alternative and modern livestock management systems.
They agreed that the progress of the nation required that urgent and bold steps be taken to restructure Nigeria’s federation to encourage evolution of state police, revenue allocation formula review in favour of sub-national governments and creation of institutions which would legitimately advance commitment to and practice of true federalism.
The governors also urged the Federal Government to convoke a national dialogue in view of widespread agitations among various peoples “for greater inclusiveness in existing governance arrangements’’.
“The governors recommended a review of appointments into Federal Government agencies, including security agencies, to reflect federal character as Nigeria’s overall population is heterogenous.

THE Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives has raised alarm on the alleged looting of over N165 billion operating surplus as well as other diverted funds running into billions of naira, by top officials of the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA).
The lawmakers described as “another sad commentary on the brimming corruption in the APC administration” the mindless looting of such stupendous resources at a time the country was writhing in the throes of worsening insecurity.
It, therefore asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately “take in the indicted Managing Director, Hadiza Bala Usman, and commence a system-wide investigation with a view to prosecuting her, if found wanting”.
The Caucus in a statement signed by the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu on Monday, insisted that such huge economic crime against the nation should not be left to an administrative panel of enquiry, but committed to an anti-graft agency for independent investigation.
The lawmakers expressed concerns that by committing the alleged NPA looting to an administrative panel, political manipulations and partisan influences had taken precedence over what should have been a system-wide investigation into a monumental fraud.
“Our Caucus holds that the mere suspension of the indicted Managing Director of the NPA, Hadiza Bala Usman, and the resort to an administrative panel of enquiry even after the report by the Supervising Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, exposed an unremitted and possibly diverted operating surplus of N165 billion, amounts romancing and perfuming corruption by the APC-led Federal Government.
“The Minority Caucus also believes that the recourse to an administrative instead of a full-scale criminal investigation can nly serve as decoy to shield some other APC government officials involved in the looting spree at NPA and other affiliated agencies in the transport sector.
“This is because, apart from the unremitted N165 billion cited by the Minister, other documents and reports from the Office of the Auditor General of the Federation had also uncovered several sleaze, including unremitted deduction to Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) amounting to N3,667,750,470. $148,845,745.04, Euro 4,891,449.50 and £252,682.14.
“This is in addition to audit query of N15.18 billion allegedly stolen through inflated Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects/programmes under the watch of the suspended NPA Managing Director.
“As representatives of the suffering people of Nigeria, our Caucus is particularly very worried that such monumental looting are going on at a time terrorists, bandits, unknown gunmen, and criminal militias are reigning supreme across the length and breath of the country and life has consequently become the cheapest article in the country.
“We imagine that such resources if channelled to the security sector and well managed would have made a world of difference in addressing the problem of insecurity in the country”, the lawmakers stated.
It added that the APC administration had crippled the national economy and brought untold hardship and suffering to Nigerians and therefore demanded more drastic step by anti-graft agencies to recover the stolen funds as well as prosecute all involved in the looting spree.
“It is a shame that a party that came to power with the promise of fight corruption, build the economy, and fight insecurity has ended up destroying whatever gains that were made before it came to power”, the Caucus concluded.

THE Nigerian Gas Company (NGC) Limited, a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), has handed over starter packs to forty women drawn from twenty host communities in Abia, Akwa Ibom and Rivers States, trained in five different vocations.

Engr. Omotowa who was represented by the Executive Director, Support Services NGC, Mrs Uche Ossai said,”The structure and intent of the workshop was to train and empower women between the ages of 20-40 to be self reliant in all facets of their lives, providing support to their families and by extension , the community by which they belong.”
Engr. Omotowa added that,’the handover of these starter packs to the participants of the programme is a reality , this is testament of NGC’S commitment to actualizing it’s promises despite the time lag, largely due to budgetary constraints and restructuring exercise within the corporation.”
He appreciated the traditional rulers, Community leadership and the participants for their patience and understanding, stressing that it has further strengthened the existing cordial relationship with NGC and its host communities.
“On our part, we shall continue to solicit for your cooperation and assistance in the maintenance of peace and support for our business growth aspirations, in the interest of our people in these host communities and Nigeria in general.”

FRONTLINE Delta guber aspirant in the 2023 governorship election, Olorogun Barrister Kenneth Gbagi, has called on the federal government to declare a state of emergency on the security system in Nigeria.
Gbagi told journalists under the aegis of Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) that the Nigerian security architecture has collapsed, hence there is need for an emergency declaration to salvage the system.
Gbagi who is gunning for the state governorship in 2023 and has been gathering support across board, said there is deception between the government and stakeholders in the nation’s security apparatus.
He told the online publishers who converged in his country home, Oginibo, in Ughelli South local government area of the state, on Sunday that there must be an agreement and the political will on the part of stakeholders to end the insecurity that is fast taking over the nation “so that we all can go back to our usual way of life.”
He said: “Nigeria as it is today is a misnomer. There is need for a state of emergency on security in Nigeria. Security personnel are supposed to take orders from state governors. But where we are now is a situation where they all take instructions from a central command. That means the governors cannot be held responsible for the wrongs with regards to security in their states.”
Olorogun Kenneth Gbagi, a criminologist and a business mogul, insisted that the situation in Nigeria at the moment demands the National Assembly to urgently amend the constitution of the country with regards to organisation of the nation’s security apparatus if the nation will make inroads into solving the problem of insecurity in Nigeria.
Olorogun Gbagi said: “The kind of government we practice before now had the interest of the nation at heart but where the interest of the nation is not what we are pursuing, the nation will die. We must go back to the drawing board. We must go back to discuss where we are and how we want to collectively get out of this mess.”
He added: “The situation has rapidly grown out of hand. Why are we paying salaries to security agents when the main purpose of their engagement has been outlived. The purpose of paying their salaries has failed and this calls for emergency.
“Without security, there will be no investment. And once there is no investment, hunger will take over the land. Robbery, stealing, kidnapping will increase. Look, a lot of people who are criminals today do not plan to become criminals. Circumstances beyond their control forced them into criminality.
“It will continue and get worse. The country our fathers left behind is not the country we are today. There is need need for a state of emergency in Nigeria security system. Nigeria will not be a nation if we do not change the narratives.”
On the issue of grazing which is leading to clashes between farmers and Fulani herdsmen, Gbagi said cattle rearing is a private business, noting that the Nigeria presidency has nothing to do with grazing
He noted: “How does my personal business concern government? How I sell it, how it gets from one place to another is not the business of government. That is their chosen line of business. Grazing must be treated as such.
“Cow is not the business of government, unless government wants to tell us that they have acquired all the cows in Nigeria. Some of these things have come to be because of the way we have handled them.”
Although he blamed the security agencies for not carrying out their responsibility to Nigerians, he, however, agreed thst the security personnel are not well remunerated so as to encourage them to put in their best. He said the policeman that has not eaten well will run when a daredevil robber with a more sophisticated gun advances towards him.
Hence, he said there is low morale among the security personnel. He, however, insisted that over 80 percent of the guns used by the hoodlums belong to Nigerians. He is of the belief that the guns were forcefully taken from Nigerians security agencies.
Gbagi, who commended Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta state for his proactive measures against insecurity in the state and his infrastructural development, said “the way we have toiled with a lot of things in Nigeria and we are still surviving, we should attempt such with security.
He said: “Those mercenaries coming in have their own targets, interest, and objectives and unless we deal with it headlong it will be unfortunate for Nigeria. As it is now, we don’t know who to hold responsible, all the security apparatus and the stakeholders have failed.

• World economy facing US$3.8 trillion economic hit, with half absorbed by wealthiest countries • New report ‘21 Priorities for Governments in 2021’ Identifies Five Areas in Post-pandemic Recovery
A seminal report launched by the World Government Summit Organization (WGS) which highlights 21 critical priorities within five focus areas offers a source of direction for governments as they tackle post-COVID-19 recovery.
Wealthier economies will shoulder almost half the cost of the COVID-19 crisis, which could reach up to US$3.8 trillion in 2021, the report finds. That, even if developed economies can vaccinate their entire populace and developing economies can reach a 50 percent vaccination rate.
The report says mental health wellness, climate change and women’s empowerment are central concerns that will exacerbate if governments do not rebuild in a holistic, proactive manner.
His Excellency Mohammad Abdullah Al Gergawi, UAE Minister of Cabinet Affairs and Chairman of the World Government Summit Organization, said: “2020 will be remembered by history as the year of great disruption. While the world was woefully unprepared for the voracity of the virus, 2021 needs to be the year that defines humanity’s future and reshape societies to become stronger and more resilient”
He added: “With great change comes great opportunity. Valuable lessons emerged over the past year, which we must heed as we recover. Our individual and collective actions as nations have important consequences not only for us, but for our children and the many generations to come after them: we must all be accountable to ourselves and each other.”
With governments’ focus trained on the pandemic over the last 18 months, underlying societal issues such as the mental health and climate crises have exacerbated, and could become as problematic as the public health emergency if leaders do not adapt their thinking, the report suggests.
The 21 priorities outlined by the report are broken down into five sections: These five focus areas are:
Reimagining and Reinforcing Key Public Institutions
Competing in a Transformed Economy
Navigating a Transformed Geo-Technical Order
Repairing the Social Fabric
Securing the Future

DELTA State government has further reaffirmed it’s determination to sustain the various ongoing, upscaled empowerment and wealth creation programmes, especially amongst youths in communities across the oil rich State.
This is just as the state government approved the commencement of a new cycle for another two youth investments schemes, Rural Youths Skill Acquisition (RYSA) and the Girls Entrepreneurship and Skills Training (GEST) programmes.
Up to 900 girls between 18 and 35 years. are expected to be empowered under the project GEST while 810 youths were being targeted under the RYSA programme.
Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, made the disclosure on Wednesday, May 4, 2021 during a post state executive council media briefing at Government House, Asaba.
Aniagwu who was flanked by his counterpart in the Ministry of Youth Development, Comrade Ifeanyi Egwunyenga and Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr Olisa Ifeajika, stated that the approval followed Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s desire to upscale the number of intakes for the various job creation programmes.
Other ongoing and successful schemes in the state include Skills Training Entrepreneurship Programme (STEP) and Youth Agricultural Entrepreneurship Programme (YAGEP), among others under the supervision of the state’s Job and Wealth Creation Bureau
Aniagwu, boasted that no fewer than 20 to 50 persons from the existing 270 Federal wards in Delta State may have benefitted from the job and wealth creation initiative of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s administration.
In a corroborative statement, the Youth Development commissioner, Egwunyenga said that the essence of the recent approvals was to further deepen the state government’s job creation programme with the aim of bringing it closer to the people.
“More importantly in the RYSA Programme or community business school specifically designed for skilled youths, the mindset and value reorientation is to ensure that the starter packs are put to productive use.
“The Governor’s drive is tied to sustainability of the job creation programmes and we have had a collaborative framework with all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of government on training processes and provision of starter packs.”
He noted that the current Federal Government’s SME’s programme, hinged on Covid-19 is a tacit cue from the Delta State job and wealth creation programmes which commenced in 2015 and was upscaled in 2019.
“The Federal Government is now doing what Delta State government has been doing in the case of job and wealth creation since the inception of Governor Okowa’s administration in 2015. We have been creating SMEs. We are ahead in Nigeria on Job creation.”
He further revealed that the various empowerment programmes have different criteria for admission of beneficiaries.
Meanwhile, majority of Deltans have agreed that the provision of various empowerment schemes which included Skills Training Entrepreneurship Programme (STEP), Youth Agricultural Entrepreneurship Programme (YAGEP), and Girl Child Entrepreneurship and Skill Training (GEST), among others are sure ways to tackling insecurity and unemployment in the country.
They explained further that these genuine efforts that have been put in place by the state government were to curb youth restiveness and engage the youths meaningfully.

BORNO State Deputy Governor, Usman Kadafur is to serve as the Acting Governor of the State until May 19, 2021 with the House of Assembly approving the letter by the Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum seeking for vacation.
It is of common knowledge that since Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office in 2015, he has yet to allow his Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo have a feel of the Presidency for once.
Recall that PMB has embarked on series of globetrotting, especially during medical check-ups abroad but the retired Major General has continually, against constitutional provisions, denied his humble second in command the rights to act on his behalf, in his absence.
Zulum had on April 23, 2021, written to the Borno Assembly, seeking the lawmakers approval, to proceed on 21 days vacation
The Governor had also requested that in compliance with provisions of section 190 (1) of the constitution, which made him notify the House, the Assembly should approve the Deputy Governor to serve as acting Governor throughout the 21 days, in order to constitutionally give him the full powers to handle Borno State’s affairs without resort to the Governor.
A statement on Saturday by Zulum’s spokesman, Mallam Isa Gusau said the Borno State House of Assembly on his principal’s request approved Deputy Governor, Usman Kadafur, to serve as acting governor from April 29 to May 19, 2021.
He said the approval was conveyed by the Assembly’s speaker, Abdulkarim Lawan, in a letter dated April 26, 2021.
He said: “Governor Zulum has directed all Government officials and institutions to fully comply with his transmission of power.”
THE Managing Director/CEO of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), Bashorun (Hon) Askia Ogieh FCNA, CrFA, has been conferred with PUBLIC SECTOR MANAGER OF THE YEAR 2020 at the Independent Annual Awards, held at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Saturday, May 1, 2021.
Meanwhile, well meaning Nigerians, particularly Deltans, sons and daughters of Isoko Nation at home and in the Diaspora have hailed the recipient, saying that the honour was well deserved, considering his immense contribution to the general well-being of the people.
They said that the conferment of the PUBLIC SECTOR MANAGER OF THE YEAR 2020 on Bashorun Askia, did not come as a surprise to majority of Nigerians because they are aware of the managerial and leadership prowess of the Udu 1 of Isoko Nation, whom they say has many awards to his credit.
Bashorun Askia, who lauded the organizers of the Independent Annual Awards for finding him worthy for the honour, also in acknowledging the many congratulatory messages, thanked the numerous well wishers for their support and prayers.

IT is becoming increasingly nauseating, listening to our Presidential Spokesmen of late.
From the vocal cords of Mallam Garba Shehu to the erstwhile intelligent but polluted mind of Deacon Femi Adesina, truth and reality has taken an endless flight to the land of loquacious nativity where spurious untruths are spewed always, to defend a taciturn paymaster.
One wonders whether these Shield dogs and attack machines care about what posterity has in store for them and how a supposedly call to service has degenerated to a threshold of dishonesty and dishonor. There are those who argue that they’re merely doing their job. But what really is the scope of this job that makes someone lose his sanity and spewed foolishness from both sides of the mouth?
The controversial Rev Father Mbaka has created an opportunity of late to help us hear again, the usual warped thinking and lopsided emotions of Mallam Garba Shehu.
His response was that the Clergyman became disenchanted with his declared Messiah because of the latter’s refusal to compensate the Cleric in Kind in form of government contracts.
As Pedestrian as this is, one wonders if it couldn’t have been more golden for the Presidential spokesman to be silent. The base argument and reckless dismissal of the vociferous voices against the slaughter of the kidnapped Greenfield University students as ” this is not the first time people are dying “smacks of insensitivity and petulant delinquency.
Femi Adesina’s nuanced disposition, too, is not any better than Garba Shehu’s usual juvenile tantrums. Except that Adesina can be brutally combative with a most candid candor, full of hidden bile and literary senselessness.
Please let someone help me tell these folks that there’s life beyond and after Aso Villa; there’s just no need terrorising our collective sensibility by their wicked works and corrosive tongue. Honestly, there’s just no need!

A statement from the AU on Thursday said the African Union Commission, with the participation of the five (5)) Members of the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU), as well as the Democratic Republic of Congo in its capacity of Chairperson of the AU, arrived in N’Djamena, Chad on Thursday on a seven-day Fact-Finding Mission, from 29 April to 6 May 2021.
The statement said the mission is led by the AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, along with the PSC Chairperson for the month of April 2021, Ambassador Idriss Farah of the Republic of Djibouti.
THE President Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC) has come under severe criticisms for its governance ineptitude, that has left the Nigeria nation dysfunctional in its six years of despicable rulership and wrecking the ship of state, with maladministration.
Minority Leader in the House of Representatives, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, gave the condemnation while addressing the Emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), today, Thursday, April 29, 2021, at the PDP National Secretariat, Abuja.
While highlighting the fact that PDP was founded on the solid principles of national unity and inclusiveness as well as democratic tenets of rule of law, social justice, equal opportunity, transparency, mutual respect, sustainable economic development; welfare, security and happiness of all, Hon. Elumelu expressed sadness that all the hard work put in by the PDP to achieve a stable and more united country, with unprecedented economic growth, massive infrastructural development and citizen empowerment in its 16 years in power at the centre, has been destroyed by the clueless APC administration.
He said: “Sadly, these lofty gains have been wrecked within a space of six years by the overtly inept, corrupt, divisive and insensitive APC administration. We have never had it this bad in the history of our nation and Nigerians are crying out in pain.
“Today, due to the misrule of the APC, terrorism, mass killings, kidnapping, banditry, youth restiveness, economic hardship, unemployment, hunger and starvation and utter hopelessness, have encircled our nation. Nigerians across board are now intensely looking up to our party to rescue our dear nation and we must not fail them.”
Hon. Elumelu, who commended PDP leaders for the unity and oneness of purpose that have been achieved for the task ahead, equally pointed out that it is necessary that the party continues in this stead, as doing so would certainly lead the PDP to take back power at the centre and in most states of the federation, come 2023, and thereby save the nation from the current despondent situation.
He said further: “Our caucus had, against this backdrop, intensified our legislative activities in exposing the ills, incompetence, corruption and undesirability of the APC administration while highlighting that solutions lie only in returning the PDP to power at the center in 2023.
“I am pleased to report to NEC that given our unrelenting efforts, many of our colleagues in the APC have seen reasons to join forces with us and they have expressed their readiness to cross over to our party for the patriotic task ahead.
“May I use this medium to commend and congratulate the governors elected on the platform of our party for their landmark achievements and developmental projects in all sectors of life. Our governors have indeed made us proud and we hold them in very high esteem for signposting the commitment of the PDP to the Nigerian people.
“Furthermore, there is need for our party to remain stable. We therefore call on our leaders and critical stakeholders to unite in support of the NWC in the onerous task of piloting the affairs of our great party for the task ahead.
“Leaders of our party, ladies and gentlemen, Nigerians are waiting; they are queued behind us for direction. The onus now lies on all of us to remain united, focused and not allow any distractions at this critical time,” the Minority Leader pleaded.

Senator Nwaboshi occupies one of the powerful Committee in the Senate. We haven’t decided to provide you all the roads, I crave your indulgence to be more patient.
“Since I am not the only senator and I alone could not meet their request, I called a meeting of my colleagues where it was decided that I should approach the Federal Ministry of Works. We are thankful to President Buhari for approving the rehabilitation of the road, and also we are thankful to the Works Minister, Mr. Raji Fashola.”
“We are doing what the electorate are asking of us. It is not just about capital development but most importantly, the things that will be impactful on their lives.”o

VIRGIN Mary statues are sentinels of grace placed to guard the heart; they are safe sanctuaries, symbols of the authentic devotion, and reciprocal love.
Mary’s role in Christian history represents faithfulness, devotion, humility, purity. But criminally minded, illicit drugs dealers in Nigeria have resorted to the sacrilegious use of statues of Mary to smuggle drugs abroad.
However, operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have intercepted illicit drugs concealed in the statue of Mary and auto spare parts heading from Lagos to Canada and the United Arab Emirate, UAE.
The arresting officers were narcotics agents from the Directorate of Operations and General Investigations embedded in two courier companies in Lagos. They were able to seize 500 grammes of heroin going to Canada and hidden inside auto spare parts from one of the courier firms while 140 grammes of Methamphetamine going to Philippines and concealed inside statue of Mary was seized in another courier company.
The Director, Operations and General Investigations, Adeyemi Adeofe disclosed that “3.1 kg of cannabis going to UAE concealed inside spices, and another kilogramme of cannabis going to UAE concealed inside local herbs were intercepted and seized.”

Also the operatives of the Akwa Ibom state Command of the Agency have intercepted and seized 62.2 kilogrammes of illicit drugs in Oron and Uyo areas of the state.
The state Commander of the NDLEA, Mrs. Obot Bassey said four suspects were arrested in two sting operations carried out on Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd April, 2021.
Chairman/Chief Executive of the Agency, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Retd) in his reaction commended the officers and men of Operations and General Investigations Directorate as well as those of Ondo and Akwa Ibom states for their steadfastness and commitment to the new operational maxim of offensive action.
He charged them to stay focused and do more to rid every part of the country of the scourge of drug abuse and trafficking.

Adding that the peaceful disposition of Cluster 5 communities have been jeopadized by the company.
The chairman of OML 30 Cluster 5 and Chairman Community Development Committee, Chief Obaro Ekokobe and the President General of Emede Community, Dr. Okah Avah explained that it wasn’t the intention of the women to baricade the entrance to the company, but as a result of Heritage neglegence to the host communities.

He added that a suit of summon from Oleh High Court restraining himself and seven others was received in the process but was later struck out on 15th of February 2021 due to ambiguity.
Obaro maintained that several other attempts were made to ensure that the funds were paid, but Heritage has not responded, which according to him, led to the protests. He reiterated that Heritage neglegence to the host communities will be resisted until the funds are paid.

OPERATIVES of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have arrested a 300-level university student, Rhoda Agboje and her boyfriend, Ifeanyi Nwankwo for selling drug cookies.
The duo specialize in the production of drug cookies, which they subsequently sell to unsuspecting members of the public in Abuja.
According to a statement on Tuesday by the spokesman of the anti-drug agency, Femi Babafemi, narcotics agents with the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Command of the NDLEA have also launched a manhunt for another member of the syndicate.
The cookies are produced with Arizona, a highly psychoactive variant of cannabis; alcohol and rohypnol among other ingredients.
Babafemi said their lid was blown open following the arrest of Rhoda Agboje with four pieces of the drug cookies on Sunday, 18th April, 2021.
According to him, Agboje was arrested at the NNPC Cooperative estate, opposite Gaduwa estate in Abuja based on a complaint that she gave an unsuspecting young girl the cookies to eat. After eating the drug cookies, the girl lost her mind and could not sleep, making incoherent utterances due to the effects of the cookies.
She later under interrogation, confessed she prepares the cookies with a friend and sells each pack of three pieces at N1,500.
A follow up operation in her boyfriend’s house led to the recovery of over 200 pieces of the drug cookies, according to the statement.
The Commander, FCT Command of the NDLEA, Mohammed Sokoto, speaking on the incident, said: “The boyfriend, Ifeanyi Nwankwo and all the equipment used for the production of the cookies were brought to the office for further investigation. The suspect confirmed that she sells at parties and to unsuspecting members of the public, including school children that are the most vulnerable. The suspect also supplies some supermarkets and clubs in the FCT.”
Meanwhile the Chairman/Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Retd) while commending officers and men of the FCT Command for unraveling the syndicate, said what the syndicate did was not only criminal but equally unconscionable by deliberately luring school children into drug under the cover of selling to them biscuits or cookies.
He said: “I wish to draw the attention of parents to this new devious strategy to get children addicted to drug cookies and to urge them to remain vigilant while monitoring what their wards bring home from school or consume as snack.”
JUST as everything in life that has a beginning must come to an end, President Idriss Deby of Chad has met his Waterloo at the very frontline where he courageously went to visit his fighting troops.
Late President Deby whose election results was already announced, coasted home to victory, having won 75 percent of the total votes cast, in his bid for a 6th tenure. He could have become the longest serving Head of government in Africa.
But death is a leveler, bringing all mortals to its supreme whims and caprice without resistance. Idriss Deby, the fearsome military tactician, warlord and coupist is no more.
The sudden expiration of Idriss Deby brings to mind the inclusivity and selfishness associated with Power and those who wield such absolute powers in Africa.
Despite the late President’s affinity and popularity with the West, especially France, he was a known dictator fearfully respected among his 13 million people. His love for his Zaghawa ethnic group, made him an unrepentant ethnic bigot as he appoints his cronies and family members into government positions at will.
For a country that ranked 187th out of 189 in the United Nations development index , the economic wellbeing of the citizens was never on the front burner as President Deby fights from one corner of the country to another, confronting real or imagined enemies all the time.
Just as it is common with Africa seat-tight rulers, Idriss Deby’s crackdown on opposition and incessant severing of the social media networks speaks volumes of his perchance for undermining basic human rights.
However, he was honoured and eulogized by the west as a dependable ally in the fight against terrorism within the embattled Sahel region. He practically fought with and supported the French troops in Northern Mali as well as other war torn areas. He had a well trained Army, supported and equipped by France of course. His fiery fights against the Nigeria based Boko Haram from his end endeared him to many terrorists infested territories including Nigeria.
Idriss Deby ruled the oil rich nation of Chad for 30 long years; but I truly doubt if his name will be remembered for good in another three decades to come. This is the ugly path we tread in Africa all the time such that absolute power is deployed not for the general good but for vain personal glory.

TWO persons detained by the operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport have excreted a total of 191 pellets of heroin and cocaine while under observation.
This is barely two weeks after a Madrid-bound trafficker,Okonkwo Chimezie excreted 113 wraps of Cocaine at the same airport.
A statement by the spokesman of NDLEA, Femi Babafemi said on 10th April 2021, during the outward screening of passengers on Ethiopian Airline to Italy, NDLEA operatives at MMIA intercepted and referred one Chukwudi Destiny for scanning and the scan result proved positive to drug ingestion.
He was consequently placed under excretion observation and in the process; he excreted 92 pellets of Heroin with a total weight of 1.300 kilogrammes.
He said also on 12th April 2021, during the inbound examination of consignments on Ethiopian Airline cargo flight from South Africa, operatives at SAHCO import shed made a seizure of 11.550 kilogrammes of heroin cleverly packed and concealed in corn flakes cartons.
He disclosed that four clearing agents are in custody in connection to the seizure.
The Commander, MMIA Command of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Garba said: “A sting operation was executed on the address provided by one the suspects. In the process, a Congolese, Kayembe Kamba Mazepy was arrested. After his arrest, he mentioned another person who is to receive the parcel from him.
“On the strength of the information, another sting operation was conducted in the early hours of Saturday 17th April, 2021 where the person that came to take delivery was arrested.”
The statement said on Friday 16th of April, 2021, another trafficker, Ezekiel Chibuzo who arrived Lagos from Brazil on board Qatar airline was also arrested for drug ingestion. He has so far excreted 99 wraps of Cocaine.
It said this is just as officers at export shed of the airport have seized 822.950 kilogrammes of khat leaves heading to UK and US.
Reacting to the latest drug haul at the airport, Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA, Brig. General Mohamed Buba Marwa commended the officers and men of the MMIA Command for their commitment to the nation’s crusade against illicit drugs.
He said: “While I commend the officers and men of our MMIA Command, let me again warn unrepentant barons and traffickers that the game is up for them because we’ll continue to disrupt their criminal trade as part of efforts to secure our country and protect the future of our youths.”
FOR a growing economy such as ours, the ministry of communication and Digital Economy is a sensitive place for anyone to cast aspersion upon.
But the youthful minister, Ali Patami, has helped to draw the attention of the world to his beat, nay his country, for the wrong reason. He is said to have been favourably disposed to terrorists and terrorism in the past as evidenced by his hard posture, preachments and verbosity.
The most interesting thing about this brouhaha was the ugly array of defenders that rose up on the side of the young minister, defending the indefensible. It goes further to reveal the inner recesses and workings of the warped mindset of an average ethnic bigot and the religious fundamentalism in our psyche.
I make bold to say this and comfortably so, because of the latest turn of events where Patami, himself, has admitted guilt and denounced his ugly past and preachments.
It is true that there’s a time in a man’s life when he could be favourably or unfavourably exposed to ideas and thoughts that easily radicalise the mind to accept doctrines of dangerous extremism or sheer political thoughts that are unpopular with the generality of his peers or the people but satisfies his juvenile desires and curiosity only.
Some of us grew up ” radicalised” in an academic environment by leftists lecturers where it was Marxism or nothing else as far as society, peace, economic freedom and human liberty is concern.
Egalitarianism based on marxists economic determinism was imbibed as the only panacea to societal problems. But today, we’ve all been cowed by the ubiquitous Capitalist system with its accompanying neo-liberalism to want to remember Marxism and its proponents.
Nevertheless, Patami’s case is quite a different and dangerous one, being a public servant in a foremost governmental position on one hand and against the backdrop of global insecurity and threat of terrorism around the world on the other.
More importantly, should Patami’s penance or repentance be taken hook line and sinker such that he should be allowed to continue as a minister of the federal republic against the backdrop of the rumoured negative tag on the America watch list?
Was his mere contrition a ploy to keep afloat while serving the sinister motives of his paymaster in a government already overwhelmed by terrorism and banditry? Let us forgive the young man his sins as we help him pack his bags as he proceeds home to his kinsmen in Gombe. Let Ali Isa Patami resign peacefully.

The confidence vote is contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) held in Asaba, Delta State on Friday 16TH April, 2021.
The NEC of the Union further applauded and commended the Governor of Delta State, Senator Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa for providing infrastructure development across the state and his support towards the completion of the NUJ Press Centre Complex in Asaba.
Other key national issues were also raised in the 13-point communiqué, signed by the Union’s National Secretary, Shuaibu Usman Leman (Walin Shadalafiya).
COMMUNIQUÉ ISSUED AT THE END OF THE MEETING OF THE NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL (NEC) OF THE NIGERIA UNION OF JOURNALISTS (NUJ) HELD IN ASABA, DELTA STATE ON FRIDAY 16TH APRIL, 2021.
Attended by National Officers and State Councils and the FCT, the meeting deliberated on issues of the Union and State of the Nation and resolves as follows:
STATE OF THE UNION
The issue of SWAN, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria was discussed exhaustively and NEC resolves that a seven Member Committee be set up to conduct fresh election for the Association within two months. The members are:
Mohammed She, National Treasurer, Chairman
Edward Ogude, VP Zone F, Member
Adeleye Ajayi, Chairman, Lagos Council, Member, while two members each will be selected from the contending groups.
Having taken due cognisance of the immense contributions and efforts of the National President- Chris Isiguzo and his team towards moving the Union forward despite all odds, NEC passes a Vote of Confidence on him and his Lieutenants.
On the Vote of No Confidence passed by Chairmen and Secretaries of Zone B on their Vice President, Cosmos Oni over issue of his retirement from service, NEC resolves to set up a three member Committee to determine his status of re-employment and report within two weeks to the National Secretariat. The National Secretaiat is mandated to implement the recommendations of the Committee without any further recourse to it. The Committee is made up of Abiodun Abdulkareem, National Financial Secretary as Chairman, Ladi Bala, National President of NAWOJ as Member and Michael Ikeogu, Chairman of Delta as Secretary. Another Committee was also setup to look into the allegations against the Kwara State Council, to be headed by the Vice President of the Zone, Wilson Bako, the National Trustee, Ali Atabo and Ladi Emmanuel, National Ex Officio, as members.
On the issue of Ogun State council in which judgement was given against the Union, NEC directs that Status-quo be maintained pending the determination of the case on appeal. NEC condemns those members who took the laws into their hands and cautions against a repeat of such dastardly act.
STATE OF THE NATION
The continuous non payment of salaries of Journalists by some Media owners has again been reviewed by the meeting and NEC believes that this negative trend continues to impact negatively on the practice of journalism. Media owners who owe journalists should discharge their obligations in this respect, responsibly and as when due. A situation where some journalists are made to work for months without any salary is an aberration and should be condemned.
The meeting recalls that in May last year, the NUJ wrote a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari appealing for a bail out fund for the media, primarily because of the Covid 19 Pandemic which has affected the global economy. NEC in session appeals once more to the Federal Government to urgently intervene to save the Media Industry from collapse. It reiterates it’s earlier position that a vibrant and independent Media is germane in a democracy and as such it should be jealously guarded and protected.
In reviewing the contributions of TETfund to tertiary education over the years, NEC commends the Management of the intervention agency led by Prof Suleiman Elias Bogoro of doing an excellent job. NEC however appeals for injection of sufficient funds into TETfund to ensure a complete overhaul of the Nation’s tertiary education system. NEC believes that increase in tax collection would translate to more funds to finance projects in our tertiary institutions, thereby improving education quality.
Security challenges: NEC urges the Federal Government to rejig the Security apparatus to enable it effectively tackle these challenges, especially the insurgency in the North East, banditry and kidnappings, cattle rustling and other forms of criminality that have assumed dangerous dimensions, thereby making free movement of people, goods and services from one part of the country to another a difficult challenge. To further strengthen the Security architecture, NEC also calls on the federal government to accede to the clamour for State Police to bolster the security system. The meeting while looking at the challenges of banditry in the Northwest , applauds the approach of the Zamfara State Governor, Bello Muhammad Matawalle in the handling of the security situation in the State that has brought some form of respite and peace. NEC encourages more of such positive engagements as a means of eradicating such heinous acts by gangs. The Union regrets the unprovoked killing of Nigerian soldiers while on assignment to help restore peace in some warring communities in Benue State and calls for proper investigation to fish out the culprits. However, NEC cautions against the use of excessive force in this process in order to avoid any collateral damages. Whiling appreciating the role of security check-points on the nation’s highways in reducing crime, NEC equally notes the hardships haulage trucks and transporters face because of extortion by security personnel. The meeting enjoins the Inspector General of Police and other agencies whose personnel are involved to address the issue in the best interest of motorists and other commuters.
NEC tasks the Federal Government to tackle the problems of electricity supply with all the seriousness it can muster. It also urges government to enforce the directive on metering as Nigerians have been subjected to more punishment for being made to pay for energy not consumed. The system of bulk payment to Electricity companies is callous and should be stopped without any delay.
The soaring unemployment in the country is also an issue of urgent concern and NEC wants the federal government to immediately consider recruiting more workers in all the Federal Government Ministries, Agencies and Parastatals. And in doing so, priority should be given to junior workers and the Federal Character Principles be taken into account in the spirit of fairness, equity and national cohesion.
NEC expresses worry with the high rate of inflation that has eroded the purchasing power of Nigerian citizens and thus increased their sufferings. NEC appeals to the Central Bank of Nigeria to urgently evolve additional measures that will limit inflation in the country. The Federal and State Governments should also consider providing succour to citizens especially now that the rainy season has set in.
Federal roads in the country have completely broken down and are now death traps. NEC appeals for a complete overhaul of the road network in the country and urges for a speedy rehabilitation of the rail system. A situation where road accidents take more lives than communicable diseases gives cause for concern.
NEC expresses profound gratitude to the Governor of Delta State, Senator Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa for graciously approving the request to host the NEC meeting in Asaba despite the economic realities in the country. It applauds the Governor for providing quality leadership in Delta State particularly in the area of infrastructure development spread across the State and the capital, Asaba. NEC also commends the support of Governor Okowa towards the completion of the NUJ Press Centre Complex in Asaba.
